Spelling Error in Issue

Military Budgets Up For Approval

The Issue

The various branches of Almajoya's military brought their budget petitions to your attention and, as usual, they are all asking for widespread increases over the rest of the military departments.

The Debate

...

6. "The military is a stain on the peace-loving nature of our nation!" cries Billy-Bob O'Bannon, while sporting a Rastifarian hat. "People should be allowed to choose what they do for a living! Conscription is wrong and I don't see why our tax jayas should go to such a despicable cause! The money should be going to more important places - like our pockets!"

The word is spelled "Rastafarian."

Hmm, that it is! I am certain our new issue editors will eventually fix the issue.

"Defense" is often mis-spelled as "defence".

I've often noticed that too. Typically, when I input issues into MS Word, I sometimes find 1-2 spelling errors on the issue, as well as a minor grammatical one or two. But that varies from issue to issue.

I suppose our issue editors will eventually fix that as well.

EDIT: also, another big issue is whether or not words like "organize" should be spelled in the British form, or American form. Perhaps there should be a way to edit the 251 issues at current to fit a certain standard. Could be a little tedious, though.

No actually, that spelling is legitimate. The Brits spell it that way, along with "licence." They also use the extra u, in words like "favourite," "neighbour," and so forth.

OMG, 'Defence' is not a spelling mistake, it is the correct spelling in non-American English, it is simply a variation.

Edit:

Yes, that is correct. the 'American' spelling of the words is a corruption, British-English came first, Americans 'altered' the spelling of words for reasons I cannot fathom.

Correct. Not sure when the Americans changed it, because the constitution spells it as Defence.

Re: Differences between American and British spelling.

Here's perhaps one of the more severe examples:

US -- Maneuverable
UK -- Manoeuvrable

(right?)

Anyhow, this is my first post in probably more than two years -- good to be back. I figured my nation had ceased to exist after such a long time away... and was pleasantly surprised to see that it still lived! Woo hoo! hehe

Should we change the spelling to reflect a certain variation?

Welcome back, Frangland! (Not that we've met; I'm just feeling festive today.)

Todd, I'm of the opinion that the British-American spelling difference isn't huge enough to warrant editing all of the affected issues. The spellings aren't so different that we can't understand each other. Being Jamaican-American, I can vouch for that.

I'm a certifiable grammar-&-mechanics Nazi, so new issues that are edited by me shouldn't have any of those errors. However, I don't think anybody but Sirocco can go through and fix errors in issues that have already been edited.

On a side-note, I'm American and will probably use American spelling conventions when editing issues. :\

I don't care about British/American spelling conventions. I'm Canadian, we use British conventions when writing off the computer and American conventions when using Microsoft's Spell Check!

However, in the game, It's typically spelt "Defence".
