World Bowl XLIV – Ranoria and South Newlandia

Welcome to World Bowl 44! 32 teams enter this tournament, co-operatively hosted by Ranoria and South Newlandia, in search of the next team to lift the trophy for the biggest gridiron tournament in the multiverse. Do note that this is American Football (usually referenced here as “gridiron”, as “America” is not a thing every country on NSS acknowledges), which means this tournament largely follows NFL rules, with the only major exception being the use of IFAF/NCAA overtime rules.

Format:

The 32 teams will be organised in 8 groups of 4. First, each team will play each other team in their group once home and once away, before a final matchup on neutral ground in South Newlandia or Ranoria. After a total of nine games in the group stage, the top two teams in each group will advance to the Round of 16, still in South Newlandia and Ranoria. From there, a single-elimination knockout bracket will be played, with teams remaining in the nation they were already in for the final round robin.
The relevant tie-breakers are, in order: 1) Group Placement (Seeding only) 2) Wins 3) H2H result 4) H2H point differential 5) Point differential 6) IC coinflip (scorinated playoff game in lieu of rank).
If a tie between multiple teams must be broken and one team wins the tiebreaker at any stage, while the remaining teams are still tied, the tiebreakers start at the top of the list again to break the tie between the remaining teams. Two teams may only play against a team they already played in the group stage starting from the quarterfinals. There also will be no Third-Place Playoff, with both losing semifinalists being declared joint 3rd place.

RP cutoff will be between 7 and 8 pm UTC for the South Newlandian half, and between 9 pm EST and 11 pm EST for the Ranorian half, which is 1-3 am UTC on the following day. To clarify, MD1 on the Ranorian half will be scored in the early morning hours that are already the 10th in UTC.

Roster/Roleplay notes:
Teams will not be given their ranking points in scorination until they have posted a roster. As soon as a roster is provided, their ranking points will be applied in full.

Your roster may include a style modifier between and including -5 (ultra-defensive) over 0 (neutral) to +5 (hyper-offensive).

It is recommended that you post the following list of RP permissions in your roster, along with a choice of "Yes" or "No" (or a more specific explanation if you'd like) for each item. This will allow you to cooperate with your opponents and fellow competitors when either you or your opponent RPs is the first to RP about your given match. Overview:
Ranoria is, in general, a cold-weathered and conservatively minded nation. Police force is available but with extremely low crime rates often is employed more as civil assistants, and will be available to any tourists in need of a helping hand. The areas around most stadiums will feature some measure of urban development and plenty of opportunities for a community viewing the game in bars, outdoors, or otherwise, and most stadiums will have extensive tailgating parties to attend, if that's your thing.

Visitors should keep in mind that while marijuana and alcohol are legal, tobacco and other recreational drugs are not. Not to worry, most offenses regarding such substances will result in nothing more than a slap on the wrist - local police have no desire to get mixed up in international scandal.

WELCOME TO SOUTH NEWLANDIA

Map:

In a nutshell
South Newlandia is a small Esportivan island with about four million inhabitants, located east of Super-Llamaland. South Newlandia is known for democracy, elephants, regulated capitalism and environmentalism, and the friendly population, happy to help you out if you run into any problems.

Overview
In general, you can divide South Newlandia into a Southern and a Northern Part, each consisting of five general areas. You can reach a few of those directly with an airplane, via the airports in Elephant Valley, Walstreim and Newport, but for most of the areas, you will have to take an additional ship or train, or a bus. Fortunately for you, public transport is almost free in South Newlandia, while renting a car can be more expensive.

Your stay at the World Bowl
South Newlandia is a very small country. Therefore, expect that for the average fan, getting a hotel room on short notice will be difficult, and tickets will definitely be in short supply. Remember that re-selling tickets for more than the original price is banned in South Newlandia, so if you see someone ripping people off, alert the authorities by dialling or texting 123.
Even if you can’t get a place in the stadiums (tickets will be divided 40%/40% between the two participating nations, with 20% being available to everyone else), that isn’t that big of a deal. In many spots around the country, opportunities to watch the games on a big screen, often outside, with hundreds or thousands of other fans. The atmosphere at those events is often almost as great as being in the stadium, and in many places, it’s completely free of charge.
If you need any help or assistance with anything, feel free to ask the populace for help. South Newlandians are known to be eager to help, as long as you follow a few basic rules, such as not being an embarrassment for everyone and not being a pain on purpose. If you fail to clear this smallest of hurdles, you probably won’t have much luck getting help from the general public, but you can still get help by texting or dialling 321, where people are paid to deal with you. You can use this number to get all kinds of help and get answers to your questions.

Rules and Laws
If you plan to visit South Newlandia, there are a few things you should be aware of beforehand. Laws on imported goods are rather strict, and things you’d expect to not be allowed to take into other countries are usually banned in South Newlandia as well. Examples for this include dead animals, living people unwilling to enter and bombs of any kind. The same regulations will also apply if you go to leave the country again. This makes it impossible, to, say, completely random example, smuggle ivory out of South Newlandia.
Special note should be made of South Newlandian drug laws. While all drugs, and this means all drugs, including alcohol and tobacco; are decriminalized in South Newlandia; this does not mean you are allowed to deal drugs. Selling or giving away drugs for any reason is strictly banned; this includes, again, alcohol and tobacco. However, you are allowed to take any drugs you want to without punishment, and are allowed to own any that are only for your own consumption. You are probably going to be treated like an addicted person though, so people might attempt to get you professional help to fight the addiction they perceive you to have. This is rare; most people are aware that different customs exist in other countries. In short, you are allowed to take any drugs into South Newlandia as long as you can convince officials that you aren’t addicted to them and do not intent to sell them.
Bribing South Newlandian officials is basically impossible; border control is a very well-paid job in South Newlandia. Otherwise, the South Newlandian legal system is similar to the legal systems of most other civilised places; with the exception that jails and prisons have been outlawed a few years ago.

Travel
Getting around inside South Newlandia isn’t a huge problem, it is often more difficult to arrive in the first place. That’s the case with all islands, but South Newlandia has rather few flights and ships exiting and entering, mostly because of environmental regulations. If you do arrive in South Newlandia, you are likely near the coast or even on an island now; your options are Elephant Valley, Newport, Walstreim, Kinjestad or Ineton.
When you arrive, the probably best options are the multiple high-speed trains that can get you almost everywhere in the country fairly quickly. Unless you want to go to a really remote place, you can probably expect your journey to your destination to take two hours at the very most. If you want to connect between two of the big cities, like from Walstreim to Ratzupalfu, you can expect it to be even quicker. If you don’t like trains, for some reason, there are also busses and cars to rent, but the streets aren’t always in perfect condition, and are far less convenient, to be honest.
Flights inland are banned in South Newlandia. If you want to be mobile within a city, you can rent bikes for free, or you can take the underground if you are in a bigger city and the bus if the city is smaller. There are also busses and rental cars in the bigger cities, but unless you really need to, we wouldn’t advise you to use them. The bus is slower than the underground, and the underground gets you pretty much everywhere within a city. Cars can get very inconvenient because they are banned in many areas, and where they aren’t, there are rarely any parking spots. Seriously, don’t try to drive a car in South Newlandia. Most of the citizens don’t either; a lot of them don’t even have a license.

Weather
The climate typically stays the same in South Newlandia throughout most of the year, with moderate winters and warm summers. In the places where games are hosted, temperatures around 15-25°C can be expected, and although it may rain a bit, there are no big storms forecast during the duration of the Tournaments. Weather extremes of all kinds are rare, too; don’t expect any windstorms or floods or anything like that.

Animals
There are some wild animals in South Newlandia, but they will generally don’t disturb you if you don’t disturb them. Basically, just stay on the outlined paths in the forest and don’t do anything to anger animals, and you’ll be fine. Most of South Newlandias wild animals are friendly, like the elephants, for example; in the unlikely event that you meet a bear, probably the most dangerous animal you could meet in South Newlandia, in the woods, you should follow standard bear safety guidelines. In any emergency, you can call or text the number 123 to get immediate help, or the number 321 if you just need less urgent, but still important advice.

Cities and Stadiums

Elephant Valley

General
Elephant Valley, the capital of South Newlandia, makes up about an eighth of the country’s population. The city has relatively few skyscrapers, but is built over a large area instead. The city used to be more industrial, but is mostly focusing on providing entertainment for the rest of the country; most of the biggest media outlets, like the “Elephant Valley Mail” or “South Newlandia One” are having their headquarters here, but there is also a lot of other IT-related industry here. Elephant Valley is relevant for just about every sport.

Sports
Elephant Valley is the centre of South Newlandian sports. They have two elite baseball teams in the Homers and United, and are also the host of most South Newlandian home games in baseball and soccer. Additionally, Gridiron football is bigger nowhere than in Elephant Valley, home of the national team and the NSCF team Elephant Valley University Red Elephants.

Other attractions
Other than sports, Elephant Valley is by all accounts the heart of South Newlandian politics and culture. The South Newlandian government, a common sight to visit, is here, as well as some parts of the administration of the Esportivan Union. Elephant Valley also has multiple large universities, with the Elephant Valley Science Institute and Elephant Valley Sports College next to the aforementioned EVU. Other sights to visit in Elephant Valley include the biggest water park in the nation, as well as a massive statue of an Elephant painted in the colours of South Newlandia.

The people
Like in most of South Newlandia, many inhabitants of Elephant Valley are immigrants either in first, second, or third generation, creating a melting pot of all kinds of different cultures. In recent years, other cities have surpassed the growth rate of Elephant Valley, which has caused a once rapidly shifting city to settle down a bit.

Stadium of Friendship (41,093)
The Stadium of Friendship is by far the biggest stadium in all of South Newlandia. It was, very expensively, built by Valentian Constructions Limited, but it has all the bells and whistles of a modern stadium, including a retractable roof and the best available technology everywhere. It stands just outside the city limits, and is easily reachable using all forms of transport. The Stadium of Friendship also hosted a semifinal during World Cup 89. Due to the nature of this being a park for association football, there may be quirks to the stadium.

Elephant Field (15,400)
Located a bit outside Elephant Valley, this small stadium is the biggest South Newlandia has to offer. Without a roof, it is open to the elements of both wind and rain. Elephant Field is also used for home games of South Newlandia during World Bowls.

EVU Field (7,000)
EVU Field, located close to the Elephant Valley University, serves at the home of the NSCF team Red Elephants, and has been massively upgraded in anticipation of hosting World Bowl games.

New Colk

General
New Colk is located on the Elephant Island only just off of the coast, but already technically in the Strele Channel separating South Newlandia and Tumbra. New Colk, having a population of roughly 40,000, has a large Grearish population. Although many of them have assimilated with the South Newlandians into one, many Grearish influences remain today, and that is making this city extremely special. Because of this, New Colk is also the city with the strongest cricket presence in South Newlandia.

Sports
The Kinetik Islanders used to take the SNSL by storm, but since then, it has been a bit quieter around sports in New Colk. Recent developments suggest they’re looking to lure a baseball team into the city; and teams from here dominate the small cricket league of South Newlandia.

Other attractions
As mentioned earlier, New Colk has many Grearish influences. This includes rare wildlife, such as the yellow-billed kingfisher and Grearish harrier, as well as, in extremely rare circumstances, black dolphins being sighted from the Island. Other than that, Grearish support, including through the energy drink company ‘Kinetik’, has given the city a massive boost. Among the host cities, New Colk also has the nicest beaches to visit; like every South Newlandian beach, they are subject to strong environmental regulations.

The people
Graerish folks are some of the nicest people you could ever meet, and that is reflected in New Colk.

Kinetik Stadium (16,000)
Kinetik Stadium, sponsored by Kinetik, has also hosted CE28 games. Kinetik built a top-notch modern stadium with everything you could possibly want. It is very close to the sea, so this stadium always looks fantastic on photos. For WC89, they upped the seat count once again. Due to the nature of this being a park for association football, there may be quirks to the stadium.

Newport

General
Newport is located on the East coast of South Newlandia, and is the second-biggest city of the country at about 330,000 citizens. It used to be a very industrial city, named after the port that is the biggest in the country today. If anything is getting shipped to South Newlandia, odds are, it arrives in Newport first. In recent years, Newport has been the fastest growing city in the country, as job prospects have quickly attracted people from around South Newlandia and the multiverse.

Sports
Newport has always been an important city for South Newlandian sports. The city has a strong baseball presence, with the Newport Owls and Newport Dolphins in Llamaphant Pro Baseball, and plays a role in most other sports.

Other attractions
Newport has basically everything you’d expect a city to have, including food from around the multiverse, malls, and everything else. Two of the most well-known attractions of Newport are the East-Newport minigolf course, considered the best in the country, and suitable for all ages and skill levels; and the Newport Cineplex, one of the biggest cinemas in the nation, featuring all the currently relevant movies and blockbusters. If you’re more interested in culture, you can visit the highest court of law here, or the Newport College for International Relations, or the Newport Law School, or the Newport Politics Institute…

The people
The citizens of Newport are relatively normal for being South Newlandian, friendly, and commonly welcoming toward foreigners. Of course, many citizens of Newport are immigrants themselves, moving to South Newlandia for job prospects or whatever else. They do have a reputation for being a little bit less open than South Newlandians from other places, but that’s mostly a myth.

Jecken Arena, sponsored by the Jeckish chicken brand, has previously hosted a CE Semifinal, and remains one of the biggest stadiums in South Newlandia. Jecken had purchased the naming rights for many years in advance. Jecken Arena has also hosted games during World Cup 89. Due to the nature of this being a park for association football, there may be quirks to the stadium.

EsportivArena (14,000)
The EsportivArena was specifically built for World Cup 89. In honour of the Esportivan Union, South Newlandia represents the region with this stadium. It’s also just about as modern as it can get. Due to the nature of this being a park for association football, there may be quirks to the stadium.

Ratzupalfu

General
Ratzupalfu, with a population of 175,000, located near the center of South Newlandia, was always a city trying to work with nature instead of against it, and it works out fairly well for them. The city is surrounded by jungle, with wild animals often not far away, and it will be your best bet if you want to see wild Elephants. Ratzupalfu is located at the edge of the South Newlandian jungle, encompassing most of the central portion of South Newlandia.

Sports
The Ratzupalfu Rhinos used to be a strong South Newlandian soccer team, and although they lost their baseball team due to the reduction through Llamaphant Pro Baseball, they regained new life with the Ratzupalfu University of Nature Egrets playing in NS College Football. On top of that, Ratzupalfu is the team usually on top in South Newlandian basketball as well.

Other attractions
Other attractions, beside the jungle and the animals, include the aforementioned Ratzupalfu University of Nature, as well as many sources of information about South Newlandian wildlife, including the two biggest museums of South Newlandia.

The people
People from Ratzupalfu are more nature- and animal loving than any other in South Newlandia, and are going to tell you about their pets, and want to know about yours. People from here are willing to work together with nature, giving back more than they take.

Jungledrom (2,186)
The Jungledrom is the home of the NSCF team of the Ratzupalfu University of Nature, home of the Egrets. It is wide open to the elements, which can make passing difficult; which often can lead to the ground game shining here. And no, the seat count is not a typo.

Walstreim

General
Walstreim is located on the very South coast of South Newlandia. You probably recognise the name from the club team, but more on that in a bit. Walstreim, one of the drier cities in the nation, has been very industrial in the past, and is widely considered to be the home of South Newlandin football. Having more than 200,000 people, it is the third-biggest city in South Newlandia, behind Elephant Valley and Newport, and that’s largely what it is thought of. Most of the important stuff is in one of those two nations, but there are many important things here as well.

Sports
The Walstreim Lions, home of South Newlandian sports, won the last four SNSL titles, and took the footballing multiverse for a ride when they qualified for the Ro16 of the Champions League on the first venture of South Newlandia into domestic sports. Their youth team later won the Rising Stars Cup, and the Lions also have won a CEdC. There’s also a good Llamaphant Pro Baseball team in Walstreim, the Stingrays. Despite typically being the game of the North, baseball is surprisingly popular down here.

Other attractions
Walstreim, although not the most interesting city, still has a couple of interesting things to visit, such as the largest mall in South Newlandia and a very interesting museum about marine life, or Walstreim Business University.

The people
People from here are honestly rather boring until you get to know them better, which is usually worth it. Also, people are crazy about football here.

Walstreim Park (15,000)
Walstreim Park is usually a stadium for association football, formerly known as Walstreim City Stadium, and has been the stadium where the Lions fought their CL run. Since then, the stadium has been modernized for World Cup 89, and is regarded as the stadium with the most comfortable seats. Due to the nature of this being a park for association football, there may be quirks to the stadium.

The Ranorian Krauts are Ranoria's prestigious national team, funded by the Ranorian Football League and filled with players participating in professional domestic play both at home and abroad. The Krauts, now back-to-back world champions, have the funds and means to field a team loaded with playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Coming two straight titles now, the goal this season is the same as ever: Win a championship. After retaining their throne in the last World Bowl, Raul Nieler has certainly established himself as the long-term head coach of this organization and a household name. Between his contribution and a roster including several players who can claim to be among the best in the world at their position, the Krauts are certainly the favorites to win it all - again. And notably, for the first time - they're ready if John "Farmboy" Garrett goes down. With former Northern Moravica star Vallienté Wagner-Young manning the backup quarterback position, the Krauts have a more than capable heir-apparent when their legend decides to step away.

There's a bit of internal conflict in the club due to some young names unseating long-established starters, with Gideon Kearse and Abram Fairbanks - neither of whom have taken a snap of professional ball - winning the starting defensive end jobs in training camp over veterans Zach Skinner and Angelo Gordon. Both Skinner and Gordon have hall-of-fame resumes with Gordon in particular being one of the best players in RFL history and having been a defensive captain in three consecutive World Bowls. Overall, the team is running out 8 new starters - 5 on defense and 3 on offense. Will the upheaval disrupt a team that is widely considered the frontrunner to take home the gold?

Capacity: 121,450

The Karmin-Falce Superdome is, unofficially, Ranoria's national stadium. With a whopping 121,450 person capacity, relatively luxurious seating and climate control, it is the crown jewel of the nation's sporting venues. A retractable dome allows for ideal conditions, be that for the fans or the home team, if visitors aren't used to a harsh winter.

The surrounding city is thriving with Quebecois-influenced nightlife, restaurants claiming to serve "Banijan" food, as well as other attractions in Ranoria's largest city. Visitors should keep in mind that while marijuana and alcohol are legal, tobacco and other recreational drugs are not. Not to worry, most offenses regarding such substances will result in nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Overall - it's worth planning a weekend getaway rather than just a trip to the big game, but either way you'll leave satisfied!

- Scenarios seeing Wolfson in the box include but are not limited to an elite tight end, needing a quarterback spy, or several injuries to LBs necessitating his playing in the box.

- Agnor Viridian is generally employed as the dime defender here
- In hail-mary situations, expect Angelo Gordon or Albus Vergol to sub in for Taurus to maximize the team's pass rush. - - If Gordon comes in, Gideon Kearse will bump inside to DT. Vergol will take the DT spot if he subs in.
- The offense rarely runs this formation to avoid showing it on film often, a sort of "ace in the hole." Its intention is to spread the defense out and make it difficult for them to disguise their coverages pre-snap, thus allowing Garrett to call the best play available at the line of scrimmage and speed up processing post-snap. Combined with Garrett's vaunted accuracy, it's an almost sure-fire way for this offense to get some momentum going. Expect a ton of audibles and hot routes to get called.

Linetti remains as the Surge's starting QB and offensive captain. He's a dual threat, being both an accurate thrower as well as a speedy scrambler; young Malcolm Payne returns in the third string. The team also got several new reinforcements from the Upper Westside University Red Pandas squad that recently won the Memorial Bowl, first of which is the quick and accurate Tim Hunt, sliding into the backup role vacated by Harry Santos after his knee injury forced him to sit out this edition of the World Bowl.

RB: #34 Noah Sherman* / #20 Gregory Silk

Aside from Linetti, St. Kanye's ground attack lies mostly in the hands (or rather, legs) of Sherman, a World Bowl XLI Team of the Tournament member and a powerful back who doesn't think twice before bulldozing his opponents on the way to the endzone. Silk enters his second Bowl as the third down and speed back.

FB: #33 Nico Jackson / #32 Marco Jackson

The pass-catching Jackson brothers remain on fullback duty. Expect them to be rotated as starters every game, but Nico, the elder, will take the field first for Matchday 1.

The receiving corps is where the Surge truly shine. Primary WR Dobler has the best hands on the team, while in the slot, we have the fast and flashy Moore. Johns is used as the kick return man and in rotation in three WR sets with UWU's star Fredericks, who along with some of his former schoolmates has declared for the upcoming Ranorian league draft (OOC: discussed through TG). Lane is a capable backup who could very well be starting in other teams; Clearwater, while listed as a wide receiver, doesn't catch any passes. He instead makes his name known as a gunner, hunting down the returner during kickoffs or punts.

Rasputin is a deadly combination of distance and accuracy and is almost always guaranteed three (or one) points whenever he steps onto the field. The Yeezies rely on punting less than other teams do. but that doesn't mean Florence has lost his importance. He does the kickoffs, and he does it well. After again terrible bad results in the World Bowl.. the exact same team was send again to WB 42. But this time with another call.
"If they don't win a medal, they don't need to come back. Seriously, we know people were they can walk the plank then. And the helmets are axed, too", the president proclaimed.

And the team failed again and literally was axed (but not the helmets) and replaced after missing WB 43 by the

Aturim Deephides Stonecutter School

who had played at the NSCF 26 and even won some games and impressed more than every other Kriegiersien football team on the field.

The school was opened from legendary Aturim Deephide, a dwarven Master Stonecutter who wanted to share his skills with the young generation. It is at least a few hundred years old.
Blood Ball was a sport often played by dwarfs and only after Kriegiersien took over the lands where the dwarves lived, they came in contact with other sports. The even more ruthless and ruleless football variant Kriegiersien Football lost its appeal soon, but the Stonecutter School was one of the first to change to the international approved version, but without any major success outside of their region.

The line-ups of dwarven Football teams are since the old times pretty simple. There are players who are defending and players who attack to get the ball over the line. In case of bad injuries players have to switch between roles.
One player is responsible for kicking the ball.

Only one player from the former National team was kept. Dudagog, an Orcish Tight End, what lead to a pushback from the Dwarven Team, who didn't want an "outsider - what's more a stinking Orc" in the team, but it was ultimately forced on them by the government.

As head coach and architect of the highly successful Busiris Junior College Oilers, McKinney has very little to prove in the world of coaching. Unfortunately for him, he is also a lifelong parishioner of the Rev. Lee Gibbs at Island Full Gospel Tabernacle, and as such was cajoled by his minister into coming out for the team. His motives aren’t entirely altruistic; a championship-winning juco head coach makes less than an assistant at a big school, so the additional money helps his large family, and the job allows him to put in a good word for his players besides. As an OC, he runs the offense much the same as he does at BJC, West Coast-style, with short passes and a heavy emphasis on play action.

As the first girl ever to play varsity football in New Gesem, Brianna was considered little more than a curiosity as a teenager and was snubbed for all-conference honors or college offers despite putting up impressive numbers as an outside linebacker. Six-foot-three and the daughter of a powerful Sphinx, Brianna nevertheless made a career playing for East Alexandria JC and later Founders University before becoming a grad assistant at Founders U. DC for the Pilgrims is the highest-profile coaching gig she’s had, but many believe she is on track to a head coach position.

Gavin Davis wasn't expecting that to happen.

He'd interviewed James Arthur, the manager of the Woodstock University gridball team previously for a role as offensive coordinator. He walked away from the interviews impressed with Arthur as an offensive mind, as a leader, and as a person. Guiding a first-year NSCF team to a 10-win season and a first round playoff victory en route to becoming NSCF Coach of the Year spoke volumes about him as a gridball coach and as a person.

The negotiations broke down when the Incorporated Gridball Federation insisted that Arthur step down from his role as Climbers manager to take on the position as offensive coordinator of the Stars. It was the kind of requirement literally no one else in the Sarzonian national gridball team's managerial staff was expected to follow. Each one of the position coaches, the defensive and special teams coordinators, and Davis himself all retained their roles with their respective Incorporated Gridball League teams. Only Arthur was being asked to stick with just the national team. And Arthur wasn't having it.

Arthur turned down several offers, no matter how much money the IGF offered, no matter how much of a say in the offensive game plan he was being offered. Davis was willing to turn the keys of the offence over to Arthur. Then again, Davis was also willing to allow Arthur to remain as Climbers manager, but the IGF vetoed that idea. That was the point where negotiations broke down. For Arthur, it wasn't the money. It wasn't exposure or fame. He wanted to stay on campus and the IGF wanted him to walk away when he absolutely wasn't ready.

After Arthur guided the Climbers to an 11-win season, a Sequoia Conference title, and even more victories over the powerhouses of NSCF's past, Davis decided to try again. This time, he was given an assurance from his bosses that Arthur would be allowed to keep his job with the Climbers if he wanted it. Then again, Davis recalled he was told that earlier, but the Board of Governors balked at the idea. What Davis didn't know this time was that the Board watched the Climbers rattle off six consecutive victories after starting 5-3 and saw it crush defending NSCF runners up Northern Moravica at Dave WIlson Stadium. They saw how well prepared the Climbers were week in and week out. Even a 27-0 loss to Green City in the quarterfinals didn't deter the Board. They were finally ready to concede to Arthur and allow him to keep his job.

So when Davis called from his office phone and Arthur answered, he was sure Arthur would be receptive to the idea of keeping his job at Woodstock University and serving as offensive coordinator. In fact, Davis was willing to offer the title of assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, firmly establishing Arthur as Davis's No. 2 man on the managerial staff.

However, when Arthur heard the voice on the other end of the phone and realised it was Davis, he slammed the phone down. For Arthur, the negotiations and the fact the Board was unwilling to even consider allowing him to keep his job in Woodstock left a bad taste in his mouth. The Board itself was the same. The people who'd decided he had to leave Woodstock were the same. He had no way of knowing that they'd changed their minds. They would have no way of knowing he was now willing to entertain the prospect of leaving Woodstock University now that the Climbers were more established as a potential championship contender. Sure, they now had unfinished business after their loss to Green City, but Arthur had every confidence in Chris Hoskins to continue to steer the ship.

A few minutes after the attempt to call Arthur, Davis tried again, this time with his personal mobile phone calling Arthur's personal mobile. Arthur had his phone turned off whilst he was in the midst of negotiating a new contract with the Board of Regents. They were prepared to offer him a substantial raise, to go along with major salary increases for the entire Climbers staff. He'd had a taste of success at the collegiate level with the Climbers' domestic exploits and their 21 victories across two NSCF seasons.

Davis, for his part, was willing to again call offensive plays, although he was also willing to bring Arthur on as a "consultant" to essentially introduce him to the offensive players and allow him to learn the playbook so he could eventually design his own. But for now, Arthur and the Stars were not destined to join forces now that training camp was about to get underway for the Stars.

After World Bowl XLI, a vast majority of the roster elected to retire from World Bowl play, as they'd been around for like a billion years. Most of the players here are young, being standout rookies or even some players still in college. Growing pains have been happening, but they've made a World Bowl final now together. They're more a cohesive unit than they have been in years. The holdovers from the previous squads (Beck, Hoy, Cross) are the captains as well as the ones expected to lead the team in pretty much every way.

As far as player rotation goes, generally the starters will go for a majority of the match barring cases of injury or fatigue, obviously. A lot of the players on this roster are specialized, exceptionally good in certain situations. Those players are prioritized in those downs and scenarios as necessary, even if they're normally at the bottom of the depth chart.

Now-veteran QB Dustin Beck will play the whole game unless he's injured. At halfback, Jack Hoy will go for most of the game, but expect the next fellas on the depth chart to receive more snaps than they would've in previous WBs. Starting linemen will generally play the whole game. Defensively, the secondary will shuffle after the half on occasion. Some of the front 7 will shuffle as well, but generally Cross will always be in. Merit always kicks field goals and Clacher always does kickoffs. Flan always punts, unless big yardage is needed, then Clacher punts.

STRATEGY
The name of the game for the Grid Corps is aggression and power.

The offense of the Grid Corps is balanced, splitting up responsibilities for yardage between running and passing plays. None is really favored over the other, since everybody on the team is good, but in crucial situations, they're likely to pass more than run (although running is still used to keep the defense honest). The base formation is the shotgun, although the singleback, pistol, and sometimes I are still common. Most shotgun plays are run from a single RB set, although having a FB or another RB in the backfield isn't out of the ordinary. The most common personnel is RB-TE-WR-WR-WR, but the Corps is willing to mix any amount of personnel thanks to the depth and skill at their disposal.

Most running plays are either inside the tackles or just outside them. Stretch runs are rare unless the blocking is on point, or the opposing defense can't stop them. Zone running and power running are evenly split. Fullback-led runs are also very common, especially on third down and in the red zone. A very common play is a triple option out of the I formation: it could be a fullback handoff, a halfback pitch, or a quarterback keeper. The Wildcat formation always shows up a couple times a game, especially if the opposing defense can't stop it. Passing plays have a lot of elements, not necessarily a vertical offense but not necessarily a conservative one either. Deep routes are thrown relatively often to keep the defense honest thanks to the incredible QB and WR talent available. When the game is tight, the Corps is excellent at the hurry-up offense, having a deep playbook to constantly keep the defense off guard.

The defense is also aggressive. Blitzing is very, very common, as the defense is fearless. Even on non-blitz plays, the defensive linemen go all out. Man blitzes on first down are a regularity, especially if it's working. When an opposing offense is stuck inside the five, the Corps will likely come out with everyone except the defensive backs blitzing. Scoring safeties are the pride of the Grid Corps, and thus they'll go for it as much as possible. They'll also pack the line on the other goalline inside the five, but if a team is 3rd/4th and Goal outside of the 7 or 8, they're likely to just pack the end zone with as many defensive backs as possible. When not in goalline formation, they'll usually opt for a 4-man rush. 4-3 and Nickel defenses are Corps staples, unless the situation calls for a change in strategy (obviously). The Corps runs both man and zone evenly, but prefers Cover 2 man. Usually they'll start with man coverage until the team they're playing shows proficiency in beating man, then they'll switch to zone with man and the trademark blitzes thrown in. Zone blitzes on crucial third downs have been known to happen. In all, they aren't afraid to take chances in big spots and bring pressure.

Special teams for the Grid Corps is prone to fake plays. Whether it's a misleading kick return (moving all the blockers to the opposite side of the field from where the ball is going), lateral returns even when the game doesn't depend on it, passes or runs from special teams formations, the Corps practices it all. In addition, the defensive special teams is highly aggressive. Rushing on punt returns, super fast kick blocks, or even line hurdling to block kicks. This is made much easier by the physiology of the Corps of course. David Merit will always do placekicks, Tristan Clacher will always do kickoffs, and Jared Flan will always punt, unless injuries occur. Clacher can also do punts in situations where we need a big yardage kick.

The Corps often opts for two-points conversions for their first few touchdowns. In a blowout win, they'll likely shift to normal PATs after the half. Obviously, they'll go for PATs when the game situation overwhelmingly demands it. The playbook is deep and the number of dynamic playmakers means that two point conversion plays are plentiful and well-rehearsed, hence why they're pretty fearless going for it.

PHYSIOLOGY
I recommend you read this. It contains important information on how Drawkians are different from your average human. In a nutshell, they're over 7 feet tall on average, and have larger proportions to match. Now, they're also lankier and less stocky all-around, but that doesn't mean some like a D-tackle can't get thick and muscular, it's not just not the average build. Now, this may conflict with some of your RPing preferences or make it harder to RP about us, so you're totally free to just ignore that and pretend we're the same as humans. That's totally your call, and I don't mind it either way.

VENUE

For group stage home games, Drawkland will be playing in Metro Arena, the 150,000 seat indoor gridiron stadium in the heart of Metropolon, Drawkland's capital.

The following are just some tidbits from the Ranorian Football League's 2029 and 2030 seasons, which are the most recent and occured between World Bowl 43 and 44. If you'd like a bit more of an overview of the seasons, you can view 2029's here and 2030's here. Enjoy!

RFL 2029 Season, Season Opener
Dietrich Dynamos @ Edmunton Eagles

For those who aren't aware, the Edmunton Eagles aren't exactly your stalwart franchise. Middle of the pack at best, generally aren't challenging for a title. Getting slotted in the season opener against none other than the reigning champions in the Dietrich Dynamos was widely likened to a lamb to the slaughter. Led by NSCF legend Deondre "Diamond" Rhine, Dietrich had gone 29-3 combined in the last two regular seasons and won the championship each time. And while a first team all-pro in wideout Alessandra Mio had left the team in free agency, Rhine still had the best tight end in the league if not the world to throw to in Johnny Farmer.

Well, the Dynamos got the ball first. Deondre Rhine hung back while the rest of the offense took the field to confirm the playcall. And he didn't look like he'd miss a beat without Mio. The only reason the Krauts have ever considered moving on from John Garrett took the snap out of the shotgun, and his first pass of the year was a bomb to none other than Johnny Farmer. He caught it in stride and broke one tackle, and they'd finish off the drive in five plays. Rhine himself was 4/4 for 67 yards with a touchdown pass to cap it off. And not long after, the Eagles found themselves down 14-0 when Rhine hit Farmer for the duo's first scoring connection of the season.

This thing may as well have already been over. With Kraut linebacker Sean Morgan-Horne and Iron Legion starting corner Paul Mattieu itching for an interception, there was no way anyone was throwing their way back into this game. The Eagles went three and out, and Rhine covered his ears to listen to the play come in on his helmet.

He looked back at their coach and tilted his head with a raised eyebrow. When he got no response, he shrugged, and took his place in the huddle.

For those of you who don't know, most teams run their first few plays off a practiced script, so they don't really need a playcall as the whole team has run through those plays several times in practice. This is why so many teams tend to start fast - they're good with those scripted plays.

Well, the Dynamos were out of that stretch now, so Rhine was getting full playcalls.

Do what that information - and the following snippet - what you will.

"Right, so that all sounded like gibberish. Here’s what we’re gonna do guys.” He stood up on a tip-toe to find the ball, and then took a step over to reach it as the play clock continued to wind down.

The rest of the team was confused, but Rhine's antics weren't anything new - and he won games, so it was brushed off. Johnny Farmer, who was the only one who seemed concerned, grabbed his arm to stop him. "Dude, just tell us the play."

The quarterback flashed a grin and shrugged him off. “I am!" He grabbed the football and held it in the middle of the huddle, then began drawing the play out on the skin of the ball like a middle school, recess MVP would. "Now, pay attention. You’re gonna take three steps, then cut inside…”

Penalty flags flew and whistles cut through his attempt at starting a coaching career when the playclock hit zero. Their coach pinched the bridge of his nose on the sideline, and Rhine snickered.

"Oops, anyway, so you'll go he-"

"Holy crap, you don’t know the plays, do you?”

Everyone stopped and stared at Rhine, who shook his head to both sides with a hardly-disguised grin. He didn't last long, and laughed when he offered an explanation that, from his point of view, sounded perfectly reasonable. “Hell no bro! He was saying a bunch of letters and weird words. Like Y, X, stick, lookie, it was whack!”

Johnny Farmer scrunched his eyes closed. Slow breath in. Possibly the deepest, heaviest exhale you've ever seen. "God help me, I miss Alessandra."

He knew the wideout had always given Rhine pointers before each play - but if this was as bad as it looked, he was starting to think she - a wide receiver - had been giving the quarterback the playcalls for the last four seasons.

"Not my best look, eh Chewie?" Rhine's pet owlephant and most loyal companion offered a morose trumpet, and patted him on the head with his trunk. His pet Drawk, Grendel, wasn't as supportive, rubbing at his leg for attention, but of course Mary Puppins - a Great Ranorian Wolfhound that no one is sure how Rhine got his hand on, offered her chin on his lap.

"What happened out there?" Magnus, Deondre's husband, looked concerned. Given Deondre's history with drugs and other illicit activities, his initial thought was that the off-field shenanigans were bleeding onto the field.

"Oh, I just didn't realize how hard it would be to call plays without Alessandra's help," he shrugged it off, "I never really learned our offense. She was super helpful there."

Now, Magnus Rhine was never much of a football player, but he was a fan. And he was paralyzed for a moment as he tried to process what he had just heard.

"You're telling me you never knew the plays?" Each word was slow, separated from the next with the briefest of pauses.

"Dude, I a full game hopped up on enough LSD to kill a small horse in college, of course I never knew the playbook. Frankly I'm insulted and hurt that you didn't know better, we're married! How could you think so little of me?"

"Dude, I hate to break it to you, but that's like, step one of being a high school quarterback. You're gonna have to hit that thing like the heavy bag at the gym. Still don't know why you wanted to take an exhibition fight with Vontaze Ahn of all people.

"It'll be fun! And don't worry, playbooks can't be that hard. If they were, not everyone would do it!"

"Deondre." Magnus snapped, "There are thirty four starting quarterbacks in the Ranorian Football League. The everyone you're referring to consists of hundreds of millions of couch quarterbacks wishing they could be."

"Eh, couch quarterback regular quarterback. Same difference."

RFL 2029 Season, Week 6

Deondre Rhine rolled out of the pocket, looking deep - as always - and like he had no idea who he was throwing to - as was often the case this season. Down 34-14 however, he had no choice but to be aggressive, and stiff armed a rusher before lofting the ball to Johnny Farmer.

Now, Johnny Farmer is one of the best players - at any position - in the world. And had he been running a streak like Rhine thought, it'd have likely been a huge gain. But this play was a corner route, and the Dynamos for some reason or another had suffered an obscene amount of miscommunications in the passing game. With Diamond Rhine coming off back-to-back MVP seasons, it was a shocker, and this time it resulted in his fourth interception of the afternoon.

Johnny Farmer did recover enough to make a vicious tackle, nearly knocking the ball loose in the process, but helped his unfortunate victim up before turning to Rhine. The tight end made a clear effort to take a deep breath or two, and glanced back at his college teammate almost longingly before heading to the sideline.

That teammate, John Garrett, stepped onto the field late now in the third quarter. This one was well in hand against Rhine's Dynamos - the Dynamos were coming off the best two year stretch in history, but at the rate Rhine was turning the ball over, they wouldn't go anywhere this season.

His crew was already up 34-14, no reason to try and run it up, but after a pair of handoffs got stuffed for two yards, they had to pass again. "X," Garrett called out to get his top receiver's attention, "Thunder! Thunder!" Jeremiah Fletcher shot him a thumb's up and settled in, covered by rookie corner Paul Mattieu. The kid had potential, but he was clearly outmatched here, and it had shown all game.

Garrett took the snap and gave no indication that he'd be targeting Fletcher, drawing the defense to the flat before turning and rifling the ball to Fletcher just as he came out of his break on a curl route, a low pass that Mattieu never had a chance to defend. Easy first down. And then he felt a very large mass hit him in the back.

Sean Morgan-Horne had come nearly unblocked on the blitz, and quick throw or not, he had decided he was going to get his hit in. Garrett crumbled under the weight of the national-team starter, his body already in an awkward position after the pass and landed in a seated position.

Tough as he is, he barely managed to get to his feet as his offensive line went at the linebacker.

This game was well in hand, and he'd head to the locker room to allow the trainers to take a look. Garrett assured the press that the hit was nothing to worry about at the post-game presser.

An x-ray the next day revealed that he had suffered a compression of his L1 vertebrae, and was likely out until the playoffs at least, if his Hogs could hang onto the 5-1 start he'd led them to.

2029 Ranorian Football League Championship

John Garrett couldn't help but be somber, cradling his sleeping daughter, Angelina, as he watched Byron Joseph run wild in the championship.

The Kohnheadian superstar was long overdue for his first ring, and hanging 44 on the best defense in the league to cement it was a hell of a sight. All the passion and moxie he'd shown at Kohnhead City University came pouring out, with cameras zooming in after he threw his third touchdown of the night. Joseph pointed to his ring finger as the score went to 44-30, and embraced a longtime teammate in Herman Whitworth shortly thereafter. There was some silver lining for Garrett - he'd had his fair share of duels with Byron by now, and the kid was a legend in the making. He'd fought like hell for that championship and it was by now long overdue - the fact that it came with his collegiate co-star in Whitworth certainly made it all the sweeter for him.

But Garrett had, of course wanted to be the one celebrating.

Garrett pursed his lips and dipped his head. Two straight World Bowls and three MVP awards, he had his share of hardware. But with only two RFL championships his domestic success just wasn't there. For a quarterback who'd put himself in the discussion for best in the world, much less the league, his lack of total dominance at home was nothing less than shocking.

"She couldn't quite make it through?" Sarah Garrett cut through his monotony, and herself had hardly stayed awake to watch the big game. It was a small affair without any family or friends in the house to join them, but John had no intention of making it to a watch party. Love the sport or not, watching someone else earn the most sought after gridiron title this side of the World Bowl itself stung, and in his physical condition, well, he wasn't fit to move around much anyway.

"No," he scratched at the top of the sleeping kid's head, "Surprised she made it to halftime though." He went to pick stand up with her, and Sarah was up in a flash, pressing down on his shoulder just enough to keep him down.

"And as stubborn as her old man," she chastised, lifting up the rag-doll esque form of their sleeping daughter, "You're not cleared to pick up that much weight for another week, I don't want you aggravating your back."

2030 Ranorian Football League Semifinals

This was supposed to be the summit of what was achievable in this league. Every record in the book - granted, mostly his own already - had been shattered. An offense that had averaged nearly forty points per game on an absolute warpath. First seed in the playoffs, John Farmboy Garrett had come back from his latest injury with murder on his mind. He'd even been as vocal with reporters as we'd ever seen him, calling out those who doubted he'd be the same player when he came back when they interviewed him.

And here, it was all slipping away against a team in it's second year after a complete reboot. Head coach Dennis Zervos, quarterback Sarai Gwenderyn, wideout Alessandra Mio, all in their second year with the team.

Garrett ignored the scoreboard that showed he was down 30-15, he ignored the clock that was just ticking down to four minutes left to play, and he took a third down snap with his season on the line. Jeremiah Fletcher was double covered, but protection was good and he was the only deep route called. Garrett knew damn well he had to take the shot, and he stepped up to deliver a bomb of a throw.

Fletcher went up to attack the ball, but the safety overtop him punched the ball from his hands, and the corner underneath just happened to be perfectly positioned to snatch it away.

Ballgame.

He knew it the second it happened - the Falcons were down three running backs, but Zervos, rather than rely some chump off the street, had taken to running a five wide offense and employing Gwenderyn as a runner. It worked. She'd gotten at least eight designed runs in each of their last six games, and in this one she was the one to run the clock down to zero. John Garrett could only watch as the Falcons marched their way to the second massive upset they'd pulled in these playoffs.

He of course shook the budding star's hand after the game, offered her what advice he could, but later he'd admit that he didn't have much to offer. "There's not much I can do that Gwenderyn can't," he offered when asked at the post game presser, "She's as talented as they come, experience is the only advantage I have there."

A strong endorsement from a player who'd just produced video-game like numbers during the regular season. He'd make that his last comment, however. This one had stung and he couldn't hide it forever.

Farmboy kept that stoic demeanor in the tunnel and in the locker room. He wasn't going to let the team see how defeated he felt after this one. Offered a few condolences in the form of "there's always next year."

He'd have to turn it around quickly with the World Bowl coming up soon now, but

"John?" Sarah called from the second floor balcony, "How would you feel about going on vacation for a few weeks?"

Now, John Garrett was not a happy camper. And he had a right to that - he'd just had the greatest regular season in RFL history only to be shut down in the semifinal and watch the championship game from his couch.

Regardless, he was currently playing the "try and wake me up" game with his two young children. After all - "Daddy's tired" and "Not right now" are often just met with a "No, come play" in that scenario. Angelina was trying to work her way to his eyes by pulling at his ears, and his son JJ was more interested in trying to pry his arms apart.

Regardless, he lifted his head, ruffling Angelina's hair when she squealed in delight, "Sure honey, where to?"

She didn't answer immedietely, making her way down to the living room and sitting on the couch beside the rest of her family. Just the slightest smirk caught on her lips, and she set Angelina onto her lap as she gave her first suggestion, "Marray is nice this time of year, beautiful beaches over there."

"Where's it at?" He asked, propped his chin on his hands and looking up at her, weary.

"Oh, you've been there before, some country called Tumbra?"

"Daddy! Don't say that! That's a bad word!" Angelina chastised, waggling a tiny finger at him.

"No no no Daddy." She crinkled her brow and pursed her lips in mock anger, and John could only roll his eyes.

"Alright, alright, where were you thinking really?"

"Well there's always Istria..?" She didn't even try hiding it at this point, and John rolled over, covering his eyes with his arm.

"I'd rather cut my..." he stopped, uncovering one eye to see if his children were still there, then changed course, "arm off than put any money into that filthy city's economy unless it's to watch Richardson put them in their place. Not that it's the city's fault, hard to have any sort of class with that university around."

"Oh, you mean Loooyooo-" she strung out the word until he cut her off.

"Don't say it," he snapped playfully, starting to smile himself now and peaking out from under his arm, "We'll have to move if you pollute the air of this house with that name. C'mon now, you've gotta have somewhere in mind."

"Since those don't suit your fancy," she clucked, "Esperance is nice this time of year. Nice little maritime town in Quebec and Shingoryeo. Couple of small resorts, not enough people that you'll be hounded by your adoring fans." She walked over and relieved them of their daughter at least, slinging the youngster over her shoulder to elicit a squeal of delight. "I've heard they've got acupuncture to die for, too, could help a bit with how beat up you are these days, old man."

Garrett winced when JJ suddenly jumped on his head, and offered a strained nod, "Sounds perfect, honey."

Dykstra's strategy of aggressive rushing, combined with seldom used but clinch passes, are likely to follow him from Hassaghast.

Offensive Coordinator: Kunibert Janzen (Male, 37)
A relatively unknown figure in the Professional League, Mr. Janzen is the former offensive coordinator for North-Central Aberghast Technical College 'Chatterers' and was hired at the direct instruction of Coach Dykstra. The two have a long-standing relationship and both seem to be keen on a rushing focused offense. Janzen is considered Dykstra's second-in-command for all intents and purposes.

Defensive Coordinator: Severin Jonckers (Male, 53)
Considered one of the old guard of the Professional League, Mr. Jonckers was previously a head coach back in the late 90's after the sports ban was lifted. Acquiring the job because of his success in coaching high school ball he shined in the early years when everyone was amateurs, but once professional talent and money began to return to the sport he was overshadowed quickly. Losing his job as head coach of the Cilaghast Krakens left him bitter for years before his return as defensive coordinator for the same team. In this roll he shined by being a tough, no non-sense coordinator who focused on the basics and drilled them into each of his players. His defensive teams were renowned for being completely unyielding and being key to a number of championships by Krakens, and subsequently other teams. His retirement announcement last year was cut short when he was recruited by Dykstra.

Special Teams Coordinator: Jofre Abarca (Male, 44)
Mr. Abarca is one of the founding players of the Professional League, starting his career in the very first draft in the late 90s. During his entire career he was a on the special teams as both a kicker and a punter. He retired in the mid-2010s to much acclaim but never having actually won a title. Despite this lackluster finish, he transitioned to coaching and has made a name for himself sense.

General Manager: Eladio Piraino (Male, 64)
Mr. Piraino has managed teams since the early 2000s, and before that was a successful business man in Lokerstere. Originally he was the manager of the Talenmoor Crusaders from 2004-2010, then the Soraghast Screamers from 2011-2013, and finally Amalrose Hellhounds who he manages to this day. Given the seasonal nature of the Strikers he accepted the position to bring his wealth of knowledge to the field and since accepting the position has been the face of the organization in the run up to the World Bowl.

Play Philosophy - Wrack and Ruin!
The Striker's philosophy has been dictated by Head Coach Dykstra and focuses around extreme aggression on offensive and slow methodical defense. On offense the team will focus on rushing and rushing hard, handing the ball off to either the agile halfbacks to slip around opposing players, or if the other team is more agile, handing it off the brutish fullbacks who will then simply hammer the ball forward until a first down is achieved. Indeed the mindset is not to make big plays or flashy maneuvers but instead to focus on keeping the pressure on the enemy team during offense but constantly switching things up, and while always looking for a breakthrough, focusing on getting those first downs to keep the ball in the possession, run down the clock, and ware down the other team.

The group draw announcement for World Bowl XLIV drew a few shrugs and collective yawns as the two unranked teams came into focus for Sarzonia. They were going to be in Group F with Kyhun and Venmere.

Defensive end Arlen Cunningham stifled a yawn. He said he thought he'd heard of Venmere somewhere off in the distance somewhere but couldn't quite place it. Strong side linebacker Calvin Jacks was openly dismissive of the two teams, not even trying to hide his lack of concern for either match.

"We should be 6-0 against those teams," he said. "We're probably going to get Evie [punter Evelyn Sutter] some time under centre," he said before bursting out into uncontrollable laughter. Uncontrollable, that is, until the Pot 1 team was revealed. All of a sudden, the eyes that struggled to stay open bolted wide. The yawns ceased as if someone hooked up extra caffeinated Pacitalian coffee via IV. The wide, easy smile on Jacks's face turned grim and glum.

Delaclava would be the Pot 1 team in Group F. The Stars and the Phoenixes would face each other three times, opening World Bowl qualifying play with a match IN Delaclava. They would get a second shot at the Phoenixes at Joe Gibbs Stadium, although stadium organisers were hoping to get the match moved to Dave Wilson Stadium in spite of World Cup qualifying beginning soon.

"Delaclava's going to be a major challenge," a suddenly sombre Jacks said. "We know how good they are. Taurus Wright is one of the best quarterbacks I've faced over the past few World Bowl qualifying campaigns."

Offensively, manager Gavin Davis said he was going to work even more closely with quarterback Cameron Stallworth in the days leading up to the team boarding the train to Delaclava.

"We can't afford to make mistakes," Davis said. "We're going to make sure Cam doesn't get overloaded."

As for Davis, he revealed that Woodstock University manager James Arthur hung up on him, but admitted he called from the office phone.

"I'm still interested in finding a way for him to contribute in a significant way," Davis said of Arthur. He added that he's continued to talk with the Incorporated Gridball Federation about its insistence on Arthur giving up his managerial role with the Climbers, adding that he was hopeful of a breakthrough on that front. However, he admitted that even if he finally won the concession he expected to have during World Bowl XLIII qualifying that Arthur might not be receptive.

"He told me the Board's decision to insist he leave the Climbers left a bad taste in his mouth," Davis said. "Even if they did a 180, he might not want to join us here."

For his part, Arthur did not answer phone calls, emails or texts seeking comment. Sources within the Woodstock University athletic department stated that Arthur was on holiday, coincidentally in Delaclava.

"He needed a break from preparation," said Joella Campbell, a secretary with the Climbers programme. "He left his mobile phone behind and he's probably laying on some beach somewhere right now."

What even was WBXLIII? To some, it was a glorious time that saw TJUN-ia pull off an 8-0 Group Stage that will be remembered for a long old time...but on the other hand, some would argue that all that good work was thrown away against Drawkland in the Quarterfinals. We had our best WB yet, climbing to #3 in the rankings, but can we go further..., especially with how old this team was getting now? Gus McKerrin knew that pretty soon, the alumni may have to start to take hold of this team while the old guard eventually decides to retire and while he knows that day will be painful, he also knows that Jake Griffin and the rest of the gang will certainly fight for any sort of immortality they can get. We will play 9 games this time around - 3 at home, 3 away and the final 3 games in a neutral venue in Ranoria in order to determine group control. Playing in three different environments will certainly be interesting and we hope that this team can come through in the end and put up another great season for the gang. GCU nearly did it...can the Jags make it that far themselves?

The main purpose of the Field of Dreams was to create an atmosphere where chaos lived and upsets can be made, a fact that was backed up in Game 1 with the "Block 6" over Cassadiagua and the "Kick 6" in the rematch a year later. Team Culture: The Banijans are also well known to be physical, and yet clean, players. While they usually are fairly clean(definitely commit penalties but nothing outwardly dirty, like intentionally injuring players or something), Banijan gridiron culture is extremely proud, and therefore, Banijans are elite smack talkers. They'll talk smack, they'll taunt both opponents and opposing fans, and they'll run up the score, if they are capable. They have a play without fear mentality, and a play to the end mentality- lots of these dudes, stars in their own right, biggest challenge is integrating into a team where they are not at the center. Another challenge, of course, is that both collegiate and professional gridiron rivalries run deep- which can make coming together at the national team level much more difficult in this sport, than it is for Banijan athletes in other sports.

Those challenges can make success difficult at the national team level, as many believe Thomas Hall has 'the toughest job in all of gridiron', to ensure that everybody buys into the common goal, and forgets about themselves as individuals to ensure that they can indeed make this sum greater than the whole of its parts.

Fan Culture Culture: Banijan fan culture around gridiron embodies some of that of the players. People love to talk smack, and therefore, fans are like that as well. Banijan fans are known as arrogant and proud, and they will show up in droves, in any city, wherever it is, to talk over local bars and support their team, even without tickets. Casinos tend to love Banijan gridiron fans, as they willing to put their money where their mouth is, and bet large sums of money on Banijan gridiron success that has always seemed to elude them.

Head Coach: Thomas Hall(Ranoria). 58 years old. The Olympic Committee of Banija, frustrated with failure after failure of Alastair Jobs, the legendary Loyola coach, after his World Bowl 37 semifinal run, has finally forced Jobs out. The Banijans believe that they have the talent to get into the knockout stages of major tournaments, prepping to make deep WB runs within a tournament or two- whether they should or not, is another question entirely. They also felt they needed a culture change- a coach with a record at the professional level, rather than a college coach.

After searching long and wide, they looked to Ranoria, one of their football rivals, to find a coach. The opposite of Alastair Jobs. As a player, Hall was the career leader in the Ranorian Football League with 62 career interceptions. He had immediately success. The Banijan national team didn't make the knockout stages at either World Bowl 38 or 39, and it was the group stage elimination at the Istria Olympiad that got his predecessor fired. Thomas Hall, however, hit the ground running. Changing the team's focus from a spread 'em out speed team to more of a power team, he went 10-0 in the group stages of World Bowl XL, and took the Serpent Eagles to their first ever World Bowl final.

After a quarterfinal appearance at World Bowl XLI, he said it's time to revamp the team's offense. "We've got stars on the outside with Lamin Kah and Chinweuba Jelan on the outside- we can't let that go to waste." Whereas Banija has been ground and pound for the last two tournaments, expect them to lean more towards spreading around the football and lighting up the scoreboard, to take advantage of the star players they have at the skill positions on offense. However, the revamp hasn't worked thus far, with a quarterfinal elimination to Ranoria at World Bowl XLII, and a stunning first round playoff exit to South Newlandia at World Bowl XLIII.

Because of the team's regression, the honeymoon is now over for Thomas Hall. It's his fifth cycle, and while nobody ever issues ultimatums out here, it simply doesn't need to be spoken- get back, at minimum, to the quarterfinals, or World Bowl 46, he'll really be on the hot seat. Some believe that Banija has fallen from the ranks of the elite, and some believe that last cycle was simply an abberation. Who will be right? With the pressure rising, of course, Hall is taking more responsibility into his own hands, to be the master of his own destiny.

Offensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach: Kopo Bogadi. 44 years old. The fifth cycle for Thomas Hall, and after a disappointing tournament last time, changes needed to be made. And so he decided to change his tune. His old offensive coordinator was fired, and Kopo Bogadi, at 44 years old, was hired to run the national team offense. He is a proponent of a high tempo, run'n'gun, and he has been given full control of the offense. "I am thankful to Hall for this opportunity, and I am sure that, with all this talent on offense, we will be able to succeed at quite a level here at this tournament."

OF course, Thomas Hall is still the head coach, so it's not like he's going to start having a 75/25 pass/run split. But expect them to focus on getting the ball through the air, and ensuring that Ifeatu Chineze has the tools to succeed here at this level.

Other notable Offensive Staff: Former NSCF 14 and NSCF 17 champion, Loyola alum running back Justice Greenspan is the running backs coach. He is 50years old. 53 year old Ugonna Chioma is the Quarterbacks Coach. 61 year old Uchey Akachi is the Wide Receivers Coach. 60 year old Beluchi Chika is the Offensive Line Coach. And 42 year old Mamadi Diene Jr.(the former offensive coordinator's youngest son) is the Tight Ends Coach.

Defensive Coordinator: David Franklin. 56 years old. David Franklin was a starting middle linebacker on Loyola-Istria's NSCF 14 title team, and he was a defensive captain on Banija's run to the World Bowl XXXVI semifinals. With the defensive coordinator from the last two tournaments taking his talents to South Newlandia to become head coach at Elephant Valley University, Franklin got the promotion. Having a stellar playing career domestically and being a longtime national team assistant, it is seen as his turn.

After two tournaments calling plays, however, Thomas Hall has decided to take the reigns on defense- the head coach will serve as the defensive play-caller. It will be an adjustment in dynamic, of course, but David Franklin does not see it as a problem. "There will still be plenty for me to do, even if Hall is calling the plays himself." Said Franklin in a press conference. "I am going to support him, and I am willing to do whatever it takes, even if it includes giving up calling plays, to put this defense, and this team, in a position to succeed."

Stadium of the Restoration

The Stadium of the Restoration is the country's national stadium, used primarily for both gridiron and association football. It is located in the northern part of Busukuma, Banija's capitol city. It is built between the "northern hills of Busukuma" where Banija's first independence was declared, an event known as the restoration of the Banijan monarchy. It is a revered and hallowed stadium for sports fans throughout the country.

A number of major events have been held here, including two World Bowl Finals, a Baptism of Fire Final, a Cup of Harmony Final, two AOCAF Finals, an IFCF Champions League Final, and the opening matches of two World Cups, as well as two World Cup semifinals. Furthermore, it has hosted multiple NSCF bowl games, as well as the NSCF Championship game. It is also the site of the annual BGFL National Championship Game. It is the regular home stadium for both national football teams, gridiron and association. The stadium, rebuilt shortly before World Cup 81, which Banija co-hosted alongside the Free Republics, has a turf gridiron field that lies underneath the grass soccer field.

Traditionally, Banija would rotate their home games around the country. However, for World Bowls XL-XLII, they played all their home games at the national stadium. With the team spreading games across the country across the last World Bowl, they will continue to do so at this tournament, despite only having three home games at this World Bowl. Busukuma, Istria, and Lwanga will be the three cities that host the Serpent Eagles, with Lwanga hosting in a dome.

The Celridge Voodoo, also called the Voodoo, V's or Vengeful V's, are the national gridiron football team that represents the Anthoran Gridiron League, the highest level of play domestically for the sport, and the Kingdom of Anthor on the international stage. They originally made their debut in the World Bowl in WB32 and have made a near consecutive run up to the 41st edition, ever since they have neglected to attend the tournament and focus instead on building more competitive team, part of which included building a multi-million pound complex centered around their stadium which includes states of the art training facilities. Head coach Joel Turnbull has been retained on a contact that will cover till the 47th edition, and many anticipate that big success is expected in return for the investments over the last three years, probably one target being improving their international ranking into the Top 20. Nicholas Harriot will remain the captain of the V's as they chase this success, coming off of his third championship ring with Monmouth over the last season and will be joined by a number of other quarterbacks, this V's roster will actually be the largest ever, probably in attempt to spread game experience as much as possible. Nearly all of the starters are AGL All-Star's, but there are a few exceptions.

Offence

A run-first offence under Arerira has been turned into a short passing game under Masman. The run is in great hands, the passes will mostly go to TEs and slot receivers (SR). Fullbacks, always a staple, are taking a step back, while the TEs flourish.

Normally, we have three QBs with different ideas about how the game should be played and how results are earned. This time though, we have the first outing of a generational talent: Masman. Picked up by the lucky Sterrenwolde squad, Masman plays slightly risky, but tends to know quite well who his weapons are and how they should be used. If he gets overconfident, he does make mistakes due to age. We then have Arerira, who isn't as tall and runs the Explosions' run first offence (and happily participates in that as a triple threat - at least, back when he wasn't in his mid 30s). Ingdon is also quite young, but in true Centaurs fashion he's a fantastic accurate deep thrower, if the game calls for it.

FB Jonas Wilson (27) - Greencaster Godspeed, a wise nimble daredevil

We have better fullbacks, but they're in their 30s, and are on their last season or so. Hence Soserindhen and Wilson: Wilson has some experience at this level already. The offence should rely a little less on this position, which is often seen as a true all-round position: run, catch, block.

More old players, but at the running back position this time. Thorebourne and Galway are the best RBs we've had in decades, with the former a little more all-round and the latter being too pacy to tackle. Jurethen and Paterson complete the committee, who are a little beefier and can power through the trenches.

In absence of great fullbacks, there are more TEs on roster. Three elusive receivers with decent blocking capabilities, it's Voorhorst, yMaellceoff, and Maret, who have no trouble getting the ball in traffic and getting a few more yards out of it. Then there's Narlash, who escapes towards the sideline more often than not, hoping to use his speed there. Based on this personnel group alone, the offence as a whole will be a lot more short pass-oriented (with a decent running game) rather than getting chunk plays.

WR Egge Gasbeek (25) - Schemerdrecht Admirals, a predictable toned workhorse
WR Bryan Welsh (26) - Willowbourne Saints, a shy well built workhorse

The Great Receiver Shortage continues, and with more backs and tight ends, that means fewer roster spots for the X-receivers on the outside. We have Gasbeek, who can go all day, and Welsh, who can also go all day. Gasbeek's stamina and strength is especially remarkable. As far as showy and unlikely catches go: these are not the guys to get those.

SR Giles Costigan (23) - Aminey Caspians, a flaky portly workhorse
SR Lloyd Whitlock (32) - Mayara Destroyers, a intellectual buff deep threat

For slot receivers, we finally have someone other than Whitlock at this position. Sure, Whitlock will still get a lot of snaps (including at X-receiver), but Costigan is a rare talent, with ups and downs, but potentially the main focal point of this offence.

Typically, the top man at each position starts. Arenna never really impressed until last season, and now he's named as the best tackle in the league. Fragoso and Allacea can take snaps as RG. Gavreau should have as many (if not more) snaps than/as Molemans, but Molemans is a little cleaner in his approach. The right tackle position is stacked and all three players can take over at other positions on the line. In 6 man O-line situations, that's where the 6th man will come from. There's a bit of everything: run and pass blocking is roughly equal. The coaches will always look to find same-team partnerships (Gavreau-Schildwacht, Fragoso-Vuluja), but they were few and far between. Then they just went with the best men for each position.

Defence

It's one of the multiverse's most feared units, and for good reason. Good at the basics, with a solid gameplan that every player knows and can carry out, and looking for turnovers: good luck getting through them. They are multifaceted, confusing, and pressure can come from anywhere. They will show one coverage pre-snap and do something completely different post-snap.

The line calls for a 3-4 defence. In that case, the RD and LD lists collapse into a single NT list, and man, there's a lot of good things there. Avink, Stroo, Akerstroom, and Gomoltinden are special athletes. The left end (LE) position is very shallow, and the same can be said (to a lesser extent) about the RE position. It wouldn't even be weird to put three RD/LD (right defensive tackle, left defensive tackle) on the line and have that form the basis for a 3-4 defence. yTaddwadd's ability to stop the run will be instrumental for that. Basically: the RDs and LDs will have a lot to do, while the RE and LE will be slightly less busy.

That said, Henry and Darknoll are incredible athletes that can disrupt offences pretty much by themselves.

High Schools in Chromatik High School Gridiron - Origins Behind the Unique Mascots, Part 1

Diamond Conference
Lanar Central High School Bikers - During the days of the Rainbow Revolution, the city of Lanar, then known as Deprí Lanar, was taken over by a gang of bikers known as The Discordant Few. Though not explicitly with the Rainbow Revolution, The Discordant Few didn't get in the way of the RR, and absolutely didn't tolerate the Chromatik Party from establishing a foothold in the city. The Discordant Few still are around, though in a bit of a less militaristic fashion, mostly focusing on community outreach and a safe place for the troubled youth in the city to grow up properly. When Lanar Central High School was founded, the school district board decided to pay homage to The Discordant Few, and chose the name, "Bikers".
Twin Cities High School Gemini - Located in Pelar, halfway between Lanar and Sanar, Twin Cities High School is named as such due to being near both of the major cities of the Rainbow District. There was talk about other mascots - Roosters, Railways, etc., but when it came down to it, Lanar and Sanar, the Twin Cities of the District, are worth naming a mascot after by itself. So, Gemini was chosen - and the actual mascot is two figures - one dressed in red and the other in blue.

Pearl Conference
Knetyohai City High School Peregrines - The peregrine falcon is the fastest bird, sometimes reaching over 320 kph when it dives. When Knetyohai City High School was looking for a mascot, the board decided on peregrines to pay homage to that speed. Unfortunately, none of the sports programs have done very well so far in the school's eight year history, but if they ever do, there's a lot of ready-made headlines to highlight their speed.
Penat High School Understudy - A very strange mascot name, isn't it? An understudy in theatre is someone who follows the lead and only steps in in case of emergencies; how does that fit a high school mascot? Penat High School was an afterthought during the days of the Chromatik Party, as the First Division High School in downtown Penat and the Regal High School in the northern outskirts got all the love. However, during the Rainbow Revolution, the Chromatik Party blew up both high schools instead of letting the Revolution take control of them, making it so that Penat High School became the primary high school of the city. The moniker "Understudy" harkens back to those days of humble origins.
Jerome A. Samuelson High School Mimes - Besides starting Jerome A. Samuelson high school, Mr. Samuelson also was one of the founding members of the Chromatik Football Federation, donating more than $500 million NSD to the endeavor after the Rainbow Revolution. Though he died due to a stroke a decade ago, Viktor Karras, Jr., the Chairman of the Chromatik Football Federation, calls Samuelson "A visionary ahead of his time" who wasn't shy to take risks, especially when it came to putting money where his mouth is. He is survived by his wife, Maria, and his two sons - Jackson Samuelson, majority owner of the Chromia Comets of the Frenei Chromatik Baseball League, and Nicholas Samuelson, Dean of Athletics for Felswyr State University. The Samuelson name lives on with pride. After his stroke, he lingered on for two months before finally passing, and during that time, he couldn't speak, leading to him signing and miming. Jerome A. Samuelson High School keeps the name "Mimes" to honor his memory.

World Bowl 44 - Group Preview

The Iron Legion, top seeds in their Group, fourth ranked in the world, drew Kohnhead, Mon Sold, and United Adaikes in their nine-game group stage. After the home-and-away, they'll head off to Ranoria for the final three games, and hopefully the playoffs.

Chromatika has a large advantage when facing Kohnhead. Across all matchups, Kohnhead has only defeated Chromatika twice in all matchups, as Kohnhead City University's record against Felswyr State University sits at 2-5. Chromatika also defeated Kohnhead in the playoffs of World Bowl 42 Quarterfinals by a score of 46-23. Notably, Byron Joseph has never defeated Sarai Gwenderyn. The Iron Legion will host the first leg, go to Kohnhead on the second, and then play the third in Ranoria. It will be entertaining to see the Iron Legion play the Brains three times - and the squad will hope to at least go 2-1.

Mon Sold is a newcomer to the World Bowl, making their debut. The Strikers pride themselves on extreme aggression and a methodical defense. They'll run the ball a lot, but that plays directly into The Iron Legion's hands. Go ahead, try to run the ball against Park Mi-Hyeon and Jere Rinaldi, or try to find the edge against the speed of Cara Setri and Randy Mett. The Iron Legion will expect to dominate all three matchups, but the Strikers will have nothing to lose - meaning they can't overlook the team at all.

Last but not least is the team from United Adaikes. Starring Silverleaf University players and others making their start, they're another up-and-coming team trying to break the limelight that the Iron Legion should handle without a problem.

Honestly, The Iron Legion should win at least seven of their games, if not all nine. They're ranked #4 in the world for a reason, and it's time to remind everyone of that.

Lightning Doesn't Strike Twice
Part 1: The Diagnosis

Six months before the World Bowl
Chormia General Hospital
Chromia, Capital District, Chromatika

The waiting room at Chromia General Hospital's neurology department was clean. A little too clean. There were spacious couches, water fountains, bathrooms around the corner, lights that were bright but not overbearing, and a series of monitors - both of TVs to help those who needed to pass the time as well as other screens that actually mattered in the day to day operations of the clinic.

Sara McAllister Drumov sat in one of the couches next to her husband, Michel Drumov. This was her scheduled biannual checkup to see how her Chronic Pain Syndrome was going, and depending on the result, there would be some ramifications.

After announcing her abrupt retirement. Sara McAllister had retired to the Drumovs' residence in Felswyr, where she used her media degree to become a film critic and he continued to be one of the foremost ornithologists in Chromatika, becoming an expert on Chromatik birds. His work caught the attention of many a newspaper in the country, and there were offers from the Chromia Central Courier and other such publications to interview Michel, but his eyes were only on Sara. The two got married in a private ceremony with just their loved ones a few months later, and both of them continued to live the quiet life.

Now almost four years after the event that eventually took her out of gridiron football, the doctors and experts all agreed that the condition that Sara McAllister had was unique. In fact they had begun to start calling it the "McAllister Syndrome" after her. It was true that the more stress she put on herself both mentally and physically, the more pain she would feel; there were a few times where she almost blacked out. They put her on some medication to help with the pain, but needed further research to try to find out what could possibly be going on and how to combat it.

Three days ago, they'd come up to Chromia for Sara to go through some extensive tests. Now, they were awaiting the results.

A nurse stepped out of Dr. Yang's office and ushered the two inside. Yang Jo Mi, Ph. D., was a cheerful, kind elderly lady with gray hair starting to show through her auburn black hair. In Dr. Yang, the young couple had found a kindred soul that really wanted what was best for Sara and the Drumovs as a couple. At first glance, Dr. Yang looked lost in thought as Sara and Michel took the seats in front of her.

"Ah, yes," started Dr. Yang, "Thank you for waiting. I have good news and I have interesting news. What do you want to know first?"

Michel and Sara exchanged a glance before he motioned her to go ahead.

"The good news first, please," said Sara, a bit nervous.

"Your condition isn't getting worse," explained Dr. Yang, "The synapses that trigger the pain in your brain remain the same, and the pain itself doesn't seem to have increased much since our last visit. That's good - it means that there may be a possibility of learning how to live with the condition. It also means that you'll have a choice to make when it comes to how you want to live with the condition, which is the interesting part."

"What do you mean, Doctor?" asked Michel as his left hand found Sara's right, and the two squeezed in celebration, "Is there a way for Sara to return to a normal lifestyle?"

"That depends on what you want to try," answered Dr. Yang, "We know of some drugs that can help in the situations where the flares do happen, and we can monitor her condition by checkups over the phone, but since we now know what to expect and how to take care of it, there is a chance that she can go back to facing the public and becoming a member of society in a way that she wants. Now, I don't recommend going back to such a high pressure situation as playing in a gridiron game, but something that's not as drastic as being on the field itself is a very possible alternative."

"I don't know about that," expressed Michel, before Sara cut him off.

"Thank you, Doctor. I'm sure we'll have a lot to talk about. Do you mind if we give you a call after we've decided on the best course of action?"

As the two abruptly left, Dr. Yang thought back at the conversation. Of course, Sara would like to return to gridiron in some capacity. But did Michel not want that for his wife?

Not that it ultimately mattered to her. She'd conveyed the news. It was up to them on what they'd do next.

What Yang Jo Mi did not know was that she'd just given one of the best kickers in the world a reason to try to fight to be part of the team again, and all that stood in the way was one worried husband.

Overview

The second-ranked Phoenixes find themselves at somewhat of a crossroads, falling short in a semifinal for a third consecutive time, in destructive fashion on its own field. They're undoubtedly the best team in the world, apart from one notable exception, and blitzed through the group stage in preparation for the Delaclava World Bowl, but this team seems destined to either push forward or fall back. Dual-threat QB Taurus Wright returns, arguably the best in the world at his position, with Michael Willis as capable a backup as ever. The receiver core sees veteran Kevin Alés depart but retains breakout star Justin Vandaele as well as Andre Michel and Charlie Coffin, while Noah Simmons and David Conley provide a formidable ground presence alongside Wright.

The quick, blitz-heavy defense sees some established studs combined with fresh new talent. Prince Rose, Jesse Rhine, Brian Bullard, and Luke Kennedy head up the front seven with great speed and tenacity, while the imposing presences of Thomas Schuttler and Vagner Dias promise to take the defense to a new level. Tate Parker and Luke Mussett once again take charge of the secondary. Kieran Conley remains as a highly accurate place kicker from inside 45.

The coaching staff remains unchanged, yet the pressure is on to push past the status quo. Frank Newman of the Mannheim Rockets returns as head coach alongside the Corcorran Hammers' Nate Hines as defensive coordinator, and former All-Tournament offensive coordinator Kim McClain in the same role. Newman takes a more conservative approach, trusting his defense to make stops instead of going for unfavorable fourth-down conversions, but Newman will also let his playmakers loose when the offense nears paydirt.

The Phoenixes tend to start strong, but can have trouble both in coming back from deficits and from "game management" with a small lead. They have the mettle and the experience to hold on. Mentally, who knows what two semifinal losses to Ranoria will do to them when the tournaments gets later and the stakes mount...
