As is tradition, I have neglected to reply on the forumside thread for far too long. The vast majority of applications between then and now (including my own!) have been resolved and added to the most recent map update (on 30 October 2021).

What's the state of my application?

Lost in one of the filing cabinets, I'm afraid. Your own region, Thneedville, is far superior anyway.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): The Republic of Taraest
Nation Name (Common): Taraest (A combination of the Romanian words for Land ; Tara. Of ; de. East ; est.
Capital City: Terenzare (Mixture of Land, and landfall ; Aterizare)
Requested Location: https://imgur.com/bcaqYns.png
Requested Population: 20,460,628
Government Type: Presidential Republic. A President is elected by popular suffrage, as is the unicameral Legislature.

Cultural Overview: Taraestans are a proud people who take heritage from the Sabarine Empire, and claim to be among the firsts to enter and leave the empire. Taraesti is similar to other languages in the former empire, although its isolation and interaction with other languages primarily Isaric, and Dlin has made the language unique to the Taraestans, and dialects exist in different regions of the country. The Brumion dialect features an array of Dlin borrowed words, while Meldair dialect features more Isaric pronunciation and words. Taraestans value hard work and democracy, placing great emphasis on collective values.

  • Ethnicity and Language: The Taraestans (Romanians) make up about 65% of the countries population, they speak Taraesti (Romanian)
(Croatians) make up about 15% of the countries populations with (Dutch)representing 10% of the population, the remaining being a mix primarily of (Greek) and other languages.
  • Religion: The primary religion in the country is Perendism, at 63% of the population, with 63% being Apostolic Perendism. About 20% of the population is irreligious. 7% being Morism while the remaining 10% practice a variety of religions and beliefs.

Historical Overview: Taraest was prior to the Sabarine Empire a land of petty Rubic kingdoms. Following the Sabarine conquest, Terenzare became the most important city in the continent as the entryway to the continent, with trade flowing through the city. Taraest remained nominally inside the empire, with Terenzare becoming a major city with its holders determining the extent of control Sabaria could have on the region to their benefit. As the empire eventually retired from the continent, the region nominally came under the conflict of tribes crossing the mountains, and Dlin settlers to the east. Taraest became the land of small kingdoms which claimed heritage to the Sabarine Empire. Wooo Medieval History wooo. By the 1700’s 4 major states would rise.

*The Kingdom of Terenzare, which would be based on Terenzare and remain heavily involved in maritime trade, and de jure under Sabarine control, but de facto free to run around.
*The Duchy of Brumion, based in the east, has more !Croatian cultural trends and usually allied to forces in the East.
*The Kingdom of Taraest in the mountains, is a close ally to Terenzare enjoying its strategic location to dominate the lowlands.
*The Kingdom of Meldair is located in the west of the country, and usually an enemy of Terenzare.

At the start of the upheaval, Brumion would fall to republicanism and ally with Tyrnica in opposition to Meldair, Terenzare, and Taraest who would intervene to restore the monarchy and gain favorable terms from the deposed monarchs. The 3 nations would succeed but would soon turn into infighting as Taraest would ally with Tyrnican forces and eventually defeat Terenzare and Meldair, being granted vast swathes of land and the capital of Terenzare.
The Taraest Monarchy would not join the new Occidental Confederacy in an attempt to establish itself as an independent state, with a new direction. Taraest would finalize its reunification following the concept of establishing a Taraesti speaking state, in the 1840’s as Nationalist ideas encompassed the population and state.

Taraest would nominally fall under Tyrnican influence and leadership siding with them during GW1, in the Galene League. The defeat of the league, would lead to Taraest being stripped of territories to make its current borders. This collapse would lead to the Taraest Civil War, a brief conflict which would see the end to the monarchy and the establishment of a republic. Taraest would remain uninvolved in GW2, until the entry of Tyrnica in opposition to the expansion of Lanzism. Taraest would remain neutral following the concept, providing a voice in support for democracies, but remain uncommitted to alliances, instead focusing on economic development and closer ties with its neighbors. Taraest would renounce all claims to its pre Gw1 territory in the 1970’s as a sign of goodwill. Taraest today is a wealthy democracy, taking notes from Sulatia in its Armed Neutrality principle.

Economic Overview: Taraest is a relatively wealthy country with a large service sector, combined with reasonable oil reserves and production, along with local auto manufacturing, and heavy industry. Taraest has a modern, less important agricultural sector, with sizable exports of agricultural goods such as Olives, Olive Oil, Wine, and Dairy products. Taraest imports primarily electronics, and chemicals and much of its apparel as such industries have moved to producing commodities, or been moved overseas. Taraest is a modern economy with a highly educated population.

Geopolitics: Taraest usually finds itself aligned with other democracies, and maintains close relationships with the Confederacy due to historical ties. The country is a close trading partner and usually acts in conjunction with the Commonwealth especially in regards to authoritarian countries such as the Pelemia-Kasaria-Bolshtine axis. Taraest is very outspoken in support of democracy and human rights around the world, and is involved in projects that seek to expand democracy and ensure defense of Human rights. Although Taraest is neutral in most matters it does usually align with Democracies on most affairs. Taraest maintains sizeable armed forces, in the concept of Armed neutrality.

How did you find out about Levilion?: I was in a VC with Tyrnica, I’ve also been lurking in the iiwiki for a couple of months.
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: Well I’ve done some research on Romania for school projects before, and I’ve used Romania as inspiration for some of my other worldbuilding. The original concept of this NS Nation (the one I’m posting from), was primarily a very Roman style country in the Balkans, so I’m quite pleased about the Roman influence in the country.
Anything else to add?: You should allow me in to fuel my worldbuilding addiction.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Republic of Surrow
Nation Name (Common): Surrow
Capital City: Holcot Inlet
Requested Location: Link: if there's a minimum city population for a city to be included on the map, feel free to not include Kupin
Requested Population: 171,550 people as of the 2021 census
Government Type: Parliamentary republic (akin to Botswana where despite it being a Presidential republic, the President/Prime Minister is the same guy and is a member of Parliament).

Cultural Overview: The dominant culture of Surrow is by far a colonial culture descended from Rythene fishermen who have settled on the Surrowese archipelago from the late fifteenth century onward, with elements from both indigenous cultures and from other cultures which have settled on the islands, predominantly Tyrnican. Due to the long period of Rythenean rule over Surrow, Rythene culture still has significant influence over Surrow. However, since the 1950s, Albrennian cultural influence has become more and more prevalent on Surrow, due to the deepening economic ties with Albrennia, and Surrow's proximity to Albrennia.
  • Ethnicity and Language: Ethnically, Surrow is 91.1% of Auressian descent (predominantly of Rythene descent, but also some Tyrnicans and Albrennians), 5.2% of indigenous descent (comprised of the Chequan (Innu) on the southern island, and the Aitshinnu (Inuit) on the northern island), and 3.7% comprising of other ethnic groups from the rest of the world. Linguistically, Surrow's native tongues are 97% Rythene (English), 1.1% Aitshinnu (Inuktitut), and 0.4% Chequan (Innu-aimun), with the remaining 1.5% speaking foreign languages as their mother tongues.
  • Religion: The dominant religion of Surrow is Perendism, with generally the same sects of Perendism present as there are in Rythene. Demographically, it'll be 85% Perendist (roughly mirroring the Perendist sects in Rythene, but with slightly more Rotiferists), 10% irreligious, and 5% other religions (which depending on the composition of immigrant communities and new-agers, can be Macakkanism, Senit, Aulaism, Jyani Dharma, or Morism, plus the odd "neopagan" and a few practicioners of indigenous religions).
Historical Overview: Surrow was discovered by Rythene explorer Avery Holcot in a period between the 1470s and 1490s, with the archipelago being noted for having rich fishing grounds despite the archipelago being pretty resource poor, meaning that unlike the adjacent native territory, Surrow would have more Auressian settlement. This led to intense competition over the fishing grounds there, particularly between Tyrnica and Rythene, with said competition lasting until the end of the Eleven Years War, which saw Rythene secure Surrow for itself.

Surrow would get its first taste of self-government during the Great Upheaval, when Rythene was dealing with the turmoil caused by the Great Upheaval, with the consequence that once Rythene was stabilised and the Great Upheaval finished, Surrow would begin to chafe under the existing colonial system. However, unlike many other places, Surrow would remain part of the Rythenean Empire (probably with increasing autonomy throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries) until the aftermath of the Second Great War, when Rythene gave Surrow complete independence in 1944.

Since independence, Surrow would become a full part of the invisible empire, particularly after the discovery of palladium in 1951 at Kupin, and today, it is heavily reliant on Albrennian investment to sustain itself economically. Politically, the two main parties would be a socialist party prominent among indigenous peoples and trade unionists that rarely gets into power and wants a "fairer relationship" with Albrennia (probably would only have gotten into power once or twice since 1944), and a centrist party that appeals to urbanites and to fishermen that has dominated Surrow's politics, and supports the status quo vis-a-vis Albrennia.
Economic Overview: Surrow's economy was historically reliant on fishing due to the poor geography of the Surrowese archipelago until the discovery of palladium on the northern island in 1951, which made Surrow a very important exporter of palladium. Today, Surrow's economy is still heavily reliant on palladium mining (particularly at the Kupin mine), while fishing, although still a reasonable force in the economy (albeit now in shellfish), is not as influential as it used to be. It has also developed a decent tertiary sector, mostly in public administration and healthcare.

Geopolitics: Surrow is as part of Albrennia's invisible empire as your tongue is to your mouth: very much integrated. Albrennia's pillars have a very strong presence in Surrow, due to the Kupin palladium mine, which plays a key role in sustaining Albrennian industry. Outside of Albrennia, Surrow maintains good relations with the Commonwealth of Northern Auressia, due to historical political and cultural ties, with Surrow prioritising relations with the two over other blocs.

Surrow's article is currently in Sandbox #5, so that once approved, it can be moved to main-space.

How did you find out about Levilion?: I found about Levilion through Kylaris: I think I first expressed an interest in Levilion because of the Edmund drama, and because of Ostry's articles.
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: I applied for this concept, partially because the culture and society of Newfoundland has always interested me, partially because I feel this would be the best region for the concept to fit in, and partially because I have never juggled nations in multiple regions at the same time, and want to give that a shot.
Anything else to add?: You may know me better as Luziyca.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Republic of Senia
Nation Name (Common): Senia
Capital City: Belinsk
Requested Location: https://i.imgur.com/yxxXQ9W.png
Requested Population: ca. 19 million
Government Type: semi-presidential republic (unitary)

Cultural Overview:
  • Ethnicity and Language: The largest ethnic group in Senia are the Senians, a !West Slavic ethnic group related to the Ornish and not!Poles. They speak a language called Senian, which is a conlang that is supposed to be closely related to not!Polish, but with Dlin influences. Dlin and Tyrnican have historically been languages of the aristocracy, but have lost that role since the early 20th century, though there are still some native speakers of both languages.
Ethnolinguistic minorities in Senia largely reflect the populations of neighbouring countries, e.g. Tyrnicans, Ornish, Dlin, not!Polish. While they were largely confined to the borderlands historically, the minorities of Senia have increasingly moved to the nation’s cities over the past century, sometimes assimmilating, sometimes forming small communities.
The official language of Senia is Senian, although several languages are recognised under the label «national minority languages». Historically, minority groups had certain legal protections (e.g. native language education and services), but these have been reduced to almost nothing, rendering their official recognition nearly useless.
The increasing pressure onto minority languages, the lack of a platform for and the underrepresentation of the nation’s ethnolinguistic minorities has rendered Senia on the path towards becoming essentially an ethnostate.
Senia has an east-west divide, where many Senians identify themselves with their region in a rivalry with other regions. Especially notable is the rivalry between Belia and [to be named].
  • Religion: Senia is a majority-Perendist country with a notable, but small Rasmi minority. The state is officially secular and, eventhough most Senians do not take religion seriously, it still plays an important role in Senian society.
Historical Overview: Senia consisted of a large number of city states and small duchies and kingdoms, which were often under the influence of its larger neighbours, for the majority of its history. The country was never united into one unified state in the pre-modern period and was divided between Tyrnica and Sulatia in the early modern period. As of the early 20th century, Senia was divided into an independent [to be named]ia (often called «Kingdom of Novogrod»; under Tyrnican influence), a Tyrnican province (Cernia) which briefly became Pelemian-ruled after the War, while most of Belia was under Sulatian control. After decades of tensions, the Senian Uprising happened during the First Great War, bringing the nation independence and international recognition with its conclusion. Pelemia gave parts of the historically Senian region of Cernia to Senia, while Pelemia continued to control the remaining Cernia region. Senia controls a region called «Southern Cresses», which historically consists of the northern regions of its south-western neighbour.
Being landlocked, Senia had come to rely largely on Pelemia for international trade after its independence. For some years, the two nations had close and generally friendly relations, although these eventually broke over policy-disagreements. Senia going on a more socialist path due to Sulatian influence alienated itself from Pelemia, which caused significant problems to the nation which had become reliant on Pelemia for sea access and its economy in general. Even discounting this, post-independence Senia struggled with its unification, especially when it comes to trying to make infrastructure from the three previous countries compatible with one another and develop regions previously underdeveloped.
For most of the 20th century, the Senian legislature consisted of one main party (the People’s Party) and several smaller parties (mostly puppets of the People’s Party, such as the Worker’s Party which consisted of labour union representatives) as well as military and labour union representatives, with a constitutionally-dictated socialist course. The economy generally was not doing well, culminating in the start of the reform era (late 90s/early 00s). Certain state-monopolies and the political system were relaxed significantly, allowing independent non-socialist parties, but also still partially electing via labour unions and the like. A series of controversial reforms and policy (especially foreign policy) changes followed since then. In the early years, this was to bring Senia closer to Pelemia again, although foreign policy changed in the later 2000s again, with the new government seeking to warmen relations with Tyrnica and the Commonwealth as a whole for economic gain.
Economic Overview: Due to economic mismanagement starting right at the beginning of independence and the unification process as well as the alienation from the neighbours it relied on as a landlocked country, Senia never managed to reach its true economic potential.
Senia has some iron reserves and significant black coal reserves. Major industries include lumber, agriculture, food processing, steel production and the production of various types of machinery and vehicles.
Over the past few decades, the economy of Senia has diversified in urban areas, especially in the Belinsk-Mogilno conurbation which forms the economic and political heart of the country, where the service sector is increasingly important. There is a stark divide between urban and rural areas, the latter seeing particularly little investment and being largely «spared» by anti-corruption measures. As such, rural flight is becoming a problem. Similarly, poor economic conditions have contributed to the substantial degree of emmigration the country has been seeing for decades (other nations are welcome to have significant Senian communities). Similarly, there is a significant divide between the regions of Senia, as some never were adequately incorporated into the nation’s infrastructure etc.
Senia has an extensive network of railways and paved national roadways, as well as a minor motorway network (read: two motorways). Although extensive, both rail and road networks are generally poorly-maintained (with the exception of the motorways and recently some other main corridors).
In terms of GDP, Senia would lag behind its neighbours significantly, although there would have been improvements recently. Its nominal GDP per capital would be in the range of 10 000–15 000 and its GDPPPP would be in the range of maybe 20 000–25 000?
There is probably several million Senians and people of Senian descent outside of the country. I would guesstimate the range of recent-ish emigrants and their offspring to be in the range of 4 000 000–6 000 000 (ca. 20%–30% of the current population (19M) of Senia) and the largest community would probably exist in Tyrnica, although anyone (especially in the Commonwealth) is free to claim a significant Senian immigrant community.

Geopolitics: Senia has a history of sitting sandwiched between stronger nations. Being landlocked, it relies on them for international trade.
The armed forces of Senia are weak and suffer the aftermath of decades of corruption and little investment. Most equipment is dated and badly-maintained. Since the early 2000s, mandatory service is no more, which was the first step in a series of reforms to the armed forces of Senia, trying to change to a smaller, professional army with less corruption.
Senia probably has little to no significance on the world stage outside its immediate neighbourhood. Its recent attempts to capitalise off of the Tyrnican and by extension greater Commonwealth market probably cause tensions with its eastern neighbours.

Miscellaneous Information

How did you find out about Levilion?: I heard about it from several people in other similar regions.
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: I have been interested in the idea of a landlocked weak nation sandwiched and historically divided between its bigger neighbours for several years now, and I hope that we can find a way to make it work in this region! ^^ Being ethnically Polish, the language is dear to me, which is why I decided to make Senian a Polish-related conlang (but fitting my personal æsthetics more lol), though having Polish as we know it as a minority was also important to me (seeing as Tyrnica has Czechs and as the area is West Slavic, it only makes sense + allows any potential future neighbour to still claim Polish if they so desire).
Anything else to add?:

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): The Republic of Heuksinae
Nation Name (Common): Heuksinae
Capital City: Tongsan
Requested Location: https://imgur.com/a/Rg01Oty the green shaded part of the grey area above Shang Fa and east of Oroshia.
Requested Population: 42,560,899
Government Type: Semi Presidential Republic

Cultural Overview: Korean inspired. Heuksinaen culture has in part due to its geographical situation been very isolated and as such it has developed into one of the worlds most vibrant nations. Heuksinaen culture is tied in heavily to the territories that it gained during its imperial phase and its culture changed dramatically over the course of both great wars taking on new influences and coming out of its drastic isolation.
  • Ethnicity and Language: Heuksinaen (Korean) as the national language with some minorities due to the empire
  • Religion: about 40% of the population follows macakkanism with Perendism or their equivalent coming in at around 5% and the rest being irreligious.
Historical Overview:

-Began as numerous kingdoms in and around the bay of Tongsan which overtime grew into five main kingdoms which frequently fought over control of the area known as Heuksinae today.

-The kingdom of Seonae which controlled the northern portion of modern Heuksinae United with Tongyeo which was the dominant kingdom in the south in around 766.

-The following period saw vast economic and cultural growth which was presided over by the Senyeo dynasty. During this period Macakkanism became the dominant religion.

-In the mid 1500s Heuksinae began to expand its influences after rapid militarisation invading the lands around it and bringing them into its sphere of influence which in the late 1500s became the Heuksinaen Empire. In 1634 Orishia was declared a dominion of Heuksinae The emperor Sineui the Great beginning a process of colonisation which was firmly implanted during the industrial era and the advent of railroads.

-After the second Great War the empire faced upheaval and economic strain as a cost of the war. This coupled with bids for independence from other parts of the empire caused the collapse of the Empire. However the ensuing republic formed after the empires death did not relinquish its grip over its imperial holdings until the 1940s, 50’s and 60’s when a second revolt brought about a new and democratic state.

-After years of economic struggle caused by multiple revolutions and wars the Heuksinaen economy began to boom in the mid 80s which brought new levels of development. This along with new strategies to limit corruption made Heuksinae one of the worlds more developed nations by the turn of the millennium.

Geopolitics:

As a democratic nation Heuksinae has spent most of the late 20th century trying to repair ties with its neighbours after the collapse of its empire and shares good relations with Shang Fa to its south and its former dominion Oroshia. It’s capital of Tongsan is an important maritime hub and is interconnected with the great north of Shang Fa as a collective agricultural centre of Nottheast Surucia.

Miscellaneous Information

How did you find out about Levilion?: I was wondering about regions and a friend said he’d heard of Levilion
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: I’m interested in the real world place and want to explore it through this medium

Postby Elstock » Wed Mar 23, 2022 10:28 am

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Free City of Elstock
Nation Name (Common): Elstock
Capital City: Elstock (city-state)
Requested Location: On the Breuvician Ocean, inbetween Tyrnica and Pelemia. The red dot is Elstock itself, while pink are areas where Elsians are a notable minority.
Requested Population: 241,490
Government Type: Unitary directorial parliamentary republic

Cultural Overview: Elstock is home to two major ethnic groups who have called the city home for centuries. The Ludic Elsians (elsczi, IRLly Kashubian), closely related to the Senians to the south and Ornish to the west, make up a narrow majority in Elstock, and remain a minority on the Els river, their native homeland. Over the centuries, the Elsians have been (oftentimes, forcibly) assimilated by both Tyrnica and Pelemia, leaving a small community outside of Elstock itself. The city-state is also home to an equally old Tyrnican ethnic group, who historically dominated the city’s economy and local politics until independence. Smaller groups include Pelemians (once more numerous until the early 20th century), and one of the largest Rasmi populations in a sovereign country by percentage, who migrated en masse to the city between the 15th to 18th centuries. Overall, Elstock maintains a diverse cosmopolitan culture, albeit with historic tension between the Elsian and Tyrnican communities.
  • Ethnicity and Language: The ethnic composition since the 2020 census is: 61.4% Elsian, 27.8% Tyrnican, 7.2% Rasmi, 3.6% Other
  • Religion: Historically, Elstock was a city with large and combative Apostolic and Classical Perendist congregations. Although these tensions have somewhat simmered with the rise of secularism, religion still plays a role as a cultural signifier in the city-state, namely within the Apostolic Tyrnican community and the various Classical offshoots historically connected to the Elsians and other groups. A strong Aulaist congregation remains in the city through primarily the Rasmi minority. As of the 2020 census, the religious composition of Elstock is: 36.4% Classical, 29.9% Apostolic, 21.2% Irreligious, 10.6% Aulaist, and 2.0% Other.

Historical Overview:
    Early history
  • Initially founded around the 10th century as a gord (fortified settlement) by the Ludic Elsians. Emerges as a notable place of trade between the Elsians and Tyrnicans from the west.
  • By 11th century, a confederation of Elsian chiefs is attested, also referred to as the Elesi. Little information exists, but is often considered the first Elsian proto-state.
  • The region quickly becomes influenced by Tyrnica, and in 1224, the monastic Order of Saint Perende beseige and occupy Elstock and other gords in Elsia in an attempt to Perendize the Ludic peoples to Tyrnica’s east. The monastic Elsian March (Marca elsica, Elsische Mark) is created along the river Els, with the order making Elstock their seat.

    Elsian March
  • Elstock’s annexation into the Elsian March sees the city boom as a centre of culture and trade during the medieval period, with the city becoming an integral part of north Auressian trade routes, especially in the production and trade of amber. The Monk’s Castle (the primary seat of the Steward, the nominal head of the order) finishes its construction in 1267.
  • The University of Elstock is founded in 1298. The university remains an important and prestigious symbol of Elstock and Auressian higher education to the present day.
  • Throughout the medieval period, Elstock and Elsia writ large are Perendized and brought under the control of the Order of Saint Perende, and a ruling class of Tyrican monks, knights, and a fledgling merchant class lord over the still-majority Elsian population of the river valley. The Rasmi, an ethno-religious group, begin to migrate towards Elsia as a source of livelihood and to flee persecution, with the Order allowing notable tolerance towards the Rasmi due to their reputation as blacksmiths and horseback riders, skills that could be co-opted for the March.

Decline and the early modern period
  • In the early 1500s, the Elsian March, already on the decline for decades from external forces, erupts into civil war as the local Apostolic Church faces splintering and the political clout of monastic rule falters. Although Elstiock itself stays within the order’s control, the rest of Elsia either forms their own entities or are subsumed by larger neighbours. Attempts to secular the March fail as Elstock enters a period of decline, albeit remaining an important tradeport.
  • In 1677, Elstock, now the final holdout of the Order of Saint Perende, is quickly and quietly annexed by Pelemia after a short blockade. Initially, the city is granted high autonomy, with much of the power remaining in the former monastic class, leading to tension with a now substantial merchant class consisting of both Elsians and Tyrnicans.
  • In the 17th and 18th centuries, with nation-building and the formation of proto-nationalism occurring in Pelemia and elsewhere in the region, pressure is placed on Elsians to integrate and assimilate to larger Tyrnican and Severny populations, often with harsh reprisals. These efforts of “Trynicanization” and “Severnization” would become more severe in the 19th century.

    19th century
  • The Tyrnican Century affects and influences Elstock immensely, with the city increasing trade with the influential neighbour. The construction of the Elstock-Ardarschweig railway line in 1836 (and the neoclassical Amber Square Station) precedes both an economic boom and the rise of tourism to the city from the rest of Pelemia and abroad, especially from Tyrnica. The Elstocker Casino is opened in 1859, beginning the city’s long relationship with the gambling industry, alongside a number of luxury hotels catering to the Auressian nobility and elite as Elstock gains notoriety as “the playground of the rich and famous” of Auressia.
  • As Elstock itself sees a revival, the Elsians within Pelemia and Tyrnica are further burdened by restrictive policies and forced resettlement. In Elstock itself, Pelemian authorities favour the local Tyrnican-speaking ruling class, and the Elsian language is de facto banned in 1850. The situation worsens in Elsia proper with even more invasive policies around banning permanent housing and land ownership, in an attempt to settle Severny in the Els river valley. In response, a fervent (and often violent) Elsian nationalist movement forms. A famine in 1871 leads to mass death and migration to Marceunia, and a failed minor uprising by Elsian farmers protesting land seizures.
  • In Elstock, Pelemian authorities crack down on Elsian nationalists through stripping the city’s autonomy. The position of Mayor is established in 1868 as a governor appointed by the Prince in order to keep order in the city. This fails, and tensions explode into numerous riots in the 1870s to the 1890s. In retaliation, Pelemia engages in a deliberate attempt to “starve out the dissidents” through government seizure of land and materials throughout Elsia. This, alongside “unauthorized” shootings and torture conducted by the military, make up the Devastation (Elsian: Dëwastacjô), a period often cited by Elsians as an attempt at ethnic cleansing, or even cultural and physical genocide by the Pelemian state. Estimates are vague, but roughly half (500,000) of Elsians are either killed or flee the region during the events of the Devastation. The Devastation has more of an effect on the countryside than urban centres, leaving Elstock still-majority Elsian by the 20th century.

First Great War and the 20th century
  • In 1901, Tyrnica annexes Elstock, alongside a swath of western Pelemia. Initially hailed as liberators, the Elsian population of Elstock are displeased as Tyrican officials retain many of the Pelemian policies on language rights and an open favoritism towards the majority-Tyrnican elite of the city.
  • The First Great War (1908-1914) devastates Elstock economically, as the city is placed in the crosshairs of both Galene League and Coalition armies via sea. The Battle of Elstock Bay becomes notable as one of the most destructivet naval battles of the war. In 1914, with an official end to the First Great War, Elstock is granted the status of a condominium, jointly ruled by Tyrnica and Pelemia initially under military rule, in an attempt to keep balance in the region while side-stepping the Elsian independence movement as a whole.
  • Under the condominium agreement, Elstock begins to rebuild under the command of the two Mayors (a Tyrnican and Pelemian diplomat jointly serving as the city-state’s executive). A move to introduce an elected legislature is dropped in the 1930s with the outbreak of the Second Great War, in which Elstock became a noted drydock and hub for spies searching for intelligence in an officially neutral territory.
  • With the end of the Second Great War in 1943, Elstock’s status as a condominium is questioned as de-colonization around the world begins. Some powers are given to an appointed local Senate in 1970, but most legislative power remains in the hands of the Mayors, and Elstock is used as a pawn between Tyrnica and Pelemia as tension remained from the early 20th century. In response to a lack of reform and local power, the Elsian People’s Army begins a bombing campaign around Elstock from the late 1950s until the early 1990s, hoping to liberate Elstock and Elsia as a whole from Tyrnican and Pelemian influence. In 1992, Tyrnica and Pelemia agree to ending the condominium, signing the Elstock accord. This leads to the election of a Constituent Assembly in 1998, and the independence of the Free City of Elstock on 1 January, 2000.

    Post-independence
  • Elstock’s constitution is based on the concept of consensus government, as an attempt to reign in external influence and keep peace with the divided city-state.
  • Since independence in 2000, Tyrnican and Pelemian influence remain on Elstock, and the city-state remains a geopolitical battleground between the two powers, if now less violent than in the 20th century.

Economic Overview: For centuries, Elstock has been a notable tradeport in northern Auressia, and has often been referred to as the “Gateway to the Breuvician”. As such, Elstock has made itself wealthy from the movement of goods, and has attained a relatively wealthy living standard for the region. Although trade remains important, Elstock has also become a major spot for tourism since the 19th century, and legalized gambling has acted as a draw to those willing to lose their money. With constant movement comes an opening for organized crime however, and there are justified accusations that the port at Elstock may be a hotspot for smuggling and illicit activity, as well as a culture of corruption. Outside trade and the growing hospitality industry, fishing remains an important industry in the city-state, even if it has historically been on the decline.

Geopolitics: Elstock, with its close physical and historical connections to both Tyrnica and Pelemia, as a city “stuck in the middle”. Although ostensibly a neutral actor on the world stage, the country’s internal politics is bitterly split between pro-Commonwealth and pro-Pelemian parties and politicians, as the city-state cannot (either physically or legally) field its own standing army. As such, Elstock has integrated in some forms with the Commonwealth of Northern Auressia, namely in using the Commonwealth mark, but full membership has been shunted by those who view Elstock as being better off within Pelemia’s sphere of influence. Due to this conflict, both Tyrnica and Pelemia are active in attempting to sway Elstock, and some cynically believe Elstock itself has used its position to bargain for favourable treatment by its larger neighbours.

Miscellaneous Information

How did you find out about Levilion?: I AM Levilion! (not really, but I am already here!)
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: I wanted to work with an urban environment, as most of my prior and current nations, although leaning towards being small like Elstock, are definitely more rural in nature.
Anything else to add?: It’s-a me, Saint-Baptiste!

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Republic of Nova Kovaria (Republik Niuwekovår)
Nation Name (Common): Nova Kovaria
Capital City: Augusta
Requested Location:
Image

Requested Population: 6.75 million
Government Type: Semi-Presidential Republic (bicameral)

Cultural Overview: Culturally, Nova Kovaria is a mixture of its colonial Rythenean and Tyrnican founders. This mixture has coalesced over time, along with some influences from the former Idican slaves and nearby Baptistois, into a distinct cultural identity. In many ways, its people celebrate its multiculturalism, though often this disguises deep socio-economic tensions.
  • Ethnicity and Language: Primarily of Auressian and Idican decent, the official languages are Tyrnican and Rythenean, though Baptistois Creole is also nationally recognized due to the minority of Baptistois on Sankt Marc.
  • Religion: Perendism is the predominant religion in Nova Kovaria, especially a few sects of Classical Perendism. There is, however, a secular humanist movement that has grown substantially over the last 2 decades, resulting in at least 30% of citizens reporting as “non-denominational” in the 2020 census. Other minority faiths include Morism and Macakkanism.
Historical Overview: Home to native peoples since at least the 1st century, Tyrnican and Rythenean settlers arrived in the early-mid 17th century, haphazardly establishing settlements on the archipelago. This would lead to inevitable tension, though ill-timed natural disasters would eventually bring the two groups closer together through shared hardship. As the islands built up, slavery would arrive in two forms: chattel slaves (from Idica) and indentured servants (from Auressia and, to a lesser extent, Surucia). These institutions would result in a boom of cash crop and monocultural plantation farming, including sugar, coffee, and fruits.

Before the Great Upheaval, each of Nova Kovaria’s islands was administered by either a Rythenean or Tyrnican governor. During the Tyrno-Rythenean Wars, the Rythenean islands were taken and the archipelago was reorganized under the single Governor of Nova Kovaria. Tyrnican rule would last until 1854 when the islands were traded to Audonia for a long-term partnership. Turmoil in Aurdonia, however, and unrest in the islands would lead to independence in 1868 as the First Republic of Nova Kovaria. This republic would eventually fall to a coup in the late 1880’s.

As the First Great War loomed, the close ties with both Rythene and Tyrnica would force the nation’s neutrality during the conflict. Disruption to trade by both sides would deeply impact the Nova Kovarian economy, and though the post-war recovery would stabilize things it became clear that Kovaria would have to diversify less the next global conflict cause even deeper and longer-lasting damage. After the war, the Second Republic would be proclaimed after a failed coup became a democratic revolution.

By the 1930s, Nova Kovaria was able to leverage its tax haven status, along with international investment, developing the nation’s manufacturing industry and diversifying the domestic economy. This would intensify during the Second Great War, as Nova Kovaria increased its industrial capacity to support the war effort against Songha. This also helped bring the nation closer to its neighbors, including Amandine.

After a severe economic recession in the 70s due to the near-collapse of the agricultural industry, Nova Kovaria’s economy recovered in the 80s and shifted into microprocessors and other advanced industrial production alongside a burgeoning technology development sector grown out of the space infrastructure constructed for the CoNA space program.

Economic Overview: Today, Nova Kovaria is a developed nation and has a broad manufacturing sector, including high-tech (like semiconductors & electronics), petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and machinery industries. It also retains robust financial and service sectors, as well as an emerging spaceflight industry. Tourism is also a large industry, though it is highly localized and often not the focus of the nation.

For the most part, agriculture has been superseded by manufacturing, and much of the islands’ food is imported. A lack of other natural resources has created a deficit to import the raw materials and basic goods needed for Nova Kovaria’s manufacturing. Fossil fuels, especially, are a significant portion of its international trade.

Geopolitics: Nova Kovaria is not a big military or diplomatic power internationally, though it does carry influence within and around the Rum Gulf due to being a center for trade and manufacturing. Globally, it carries sway within its specific niches and is a member of a number of (yet unnamed) international economic organizations. It has deep ties to both Tyrnica and Rythene, both historically and contemporary, and provides a spaceport for the CoNA space program. It’s also closely tied to Saint-Baptiste, being so close in proximity and having a Baptistois minority.

How did you find out about Levilion?: Browsing IIWiki looking at what regions were still around after coming back from a 2-year hiatus.
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: I enjoy smaller nations that play a key role in certain industries or aspects, rather than being large powerhouses or great influencers. One of my favorite things to worldbuild is technology, especially space tech, and services. This concept will also give me an opportunity to have an interesting political system without having to deal with federalism getting in the way.

Lugesania - Collab Application

Postby Blayk » Sun Mar 27, 2022 4:05 pm

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Lugesanian Confederation
Nation Name (Common): Lugesania
Capital City: Middelburg (Executive), Överboarg (Legislative), Oldkarken (Judical)
Requested Location: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ ... eriver.png
Requested Population: 1.5 million
Government Type: Federal Directorial Republic

Cultural Overview:
Lugesania is a culturally diverse nation. Lugesanians make up the majority of the population and are a Low Tyrnican dialect speaking people, primarily descended from two main periods of settlement in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Lugesanians assimilated the Samogusian people who had inhabited the Brus basin since antiquity.
Senians make up the largest minority, being predominant in the Legermark region on the north-eastern border. Rasmi are the next largest minority and are present throughout the plateau and in the (southern mountains).

  • Ethnicity and Language: Approximately 63% of Lugesania’s population are Tyrnican Lugesanian, 22% are Senian, 5% are Oriental Rasmi, while the remaining 10% various minorities of neighbouring Samogusian (Baltic) peoples, Pelemians, etc.
  • Religion: Lugensania is a heavily Apostolic Perendist nation, with roughly 70% of the population following Perendism and roughly 80% of those following the apostolic variety. The next largest group is non-believers making up 20% of the population, 4% follow traditional Rasmi religion and the remaining 6% is made up of Morists and other various minority religions.

Historical Overview:
Samogusian peoples inhabited the Brus basin since antiquity, being pushed westward from their original homeland by the migration of the Barjans. The Samogusian tribes of the Brus basin were first recorded by Sabrine historians as the Lugii, leading to the Sabrine name Lugesania. The old Lugesanians organized themselves into a number of tribes, many of which have given their names to the present day regions of Lugesania.

The Umbretcher peasant revolt of 1237 led to the first wave of Tyrnican settlement in Lugesania. Many Umbretchers, especially those around Hasserstadt, felt their special autonomy was under threat after the Tyrnican Civil War and following the failure of the revolt migrated north to Valschaffën before traveling through the Zuggerhorn pass into Lugesania. The Umbrechters were accepted to farm the harsher alpine areas of Lugesania although with more settlers arriving from Umbrecht spread into the wider basin.

In the early 14th century Valschaffëner merchants recognized a new route to the eastern trade and funded the creation of multiple burgs (fortified settlements) in the now Perendist Lugesania, prompting the second wave of settlement from Tyrnica. The string of alliances formed between these burgs and earlier rural settlements became the nucleus for the present day Lugesanian nation.

Lugesanian independence is recognized as 15th of May 1458 when the alliance established between the Stands (Cantons) of Zug, Kirnbrügge, Ünnerboarg and Oldkarken known as the Gailisian Confederation defeated the Tyrnican Duke in the War of (something). Multiple other failed attempts by both the Kingdom of Novogrod and Tyrnica secured Lugesanian independence through the 16th and 17th centuries and expanded the original confederation to its current size and then further beyond into the Southern Cresses or Operbrus region.

Sergiusz Wyrzykowski, a Senian noble succeeded in conquering Lugesania in 1779, reforming it into a Grand Duchy, and in the following years immigration from Senia into the Leegermark and Överange regions increased. The early 19th century saw the overthrow of the Grand Duchy and the official creation of the Lugesanian Confederation in 1833. Lugesania officially declared its neutrality in 1840.

Lugesania remained neutral in the Great Wars, although entered conflict with Senia during the Senian uprisings of 1911 - 1913, losing the Southern Cresses in the Treaty of Vernan. Relations with Tyrnica deteriorated during the Second Great War, with Lugesania refusing to break its neutrality and downing both Alliance and Coalition aircraft (should any nations to the south join the coalition).

In the post-war period Lugesania aligned itself closely with Sulatia, furthering itself from the spheres of Tyrnica and Pelemia. Starting in the 1950s Lugesania's economy became increasingly state run, a system which was revealed to have a large degree of corruption in the early 80s leading to a decade of economic instability. Since the 90s the economy has largely bounced back due to privatization and foreign investment funds, now being one of the fastest growing in Auressia.

Economic Overview:
Lugesania has a service sector dominated economy although historically mining, forestry and agriculture have played important roles. The mountainous regions of the nation are rich in precious metals although it lacks the infrastructure to capitalize on this fully. GDP per capita wise it's around 23,000 nominal and 36,000 PPP. Tourism has grown as an industry rapidly in recent years with ski fields and lake side resorts throughout Lugesania gaining popularity with the Auressian middle class. The cost of living in the nation is relatively cheap, although there is significant disparity between the Stands.

Geopolitics:
Lugesania is a minor player in the world of geopolitics. Historically the nation has been in the spheres of Tyrnica, Pelemia and Sulatia, although in the present day it keeps a strict neutrality. Relations between Lugesania and Senia are awkward at best due to the expulsion of Lugesanians from the Southern Cresses after its cession to Senia. Despite its neutrality Lugesania keeps an active defence force of 18,000 and practices mandatory military service, with all male citizens required to serve in the defence force for at least 2 years. Much of the equipment of the Lugesanian Defence Force is outdated, second-hand equipment brought from Sulatia or Pelemia.

Miscellaneous Information Wanting this to be a collab, if people think the concept is interesting and want to write a section of the iiwiki page or an article about the nation they can feel free to do so.

How did you find out about Levilion?: Well, some seven years ago I got a telegram from a guy named Tyr...
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: Mostly was inspired by the topography in the area and wanted to do a historical peasent republic type nations at some point anyway. Also first collab nation so see how that runs.
Anything else to add?: (Basically what it says on the tin!)
Generation 31 (The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.)

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): (e.g. The Republic of Sortenza
Nation Name (Common): Sortenza
Capital City: Trestenna
Requested Location:
Requested Population: 17,789,998
Government Type: Parliamentary Republic
Cultural Overview: Sortenza grew as a society from the banks of the river Palnaro and the fertile land surrounding it. Sortenza is a very diverse country with many different groups of Sortenzans inhabiting every inch of its land with many dialects of the Sortenza language and various different regional cuisines dominating local cultures. Sortenza has close relations with other members of the Occidental Confederation and with nations such as Palia with whom it shared strained relations with due to occupation in the Second Great War.
  • Ethnicity and Language: Sortenzans and the Sortenzan language are the majority ethnicity and language in Sortenza. Sortenzan’s real life equivalent would be the Neapolitan language spoken in Southern Italy. There are minority groups on the borders with neighbouring countries and in areas with large multicultural and immigrant communities.
  • Religion: Historically Apolistic Perendism has been the dominant religion in Sortenza thanks in part to it being extremely culturally significant to the nation for centuries as it shaped the nations art, cuisine and language. However in recent years and through successive censuses a growing number of Sortenzans have described themselves as irreligious with it now becoming the fastest growing religious group in Sortenza. The waning influence of the church in Sortenza is evident through the fact that in 2018 and 2017 abortion and same sex marriage were both legalised following fierce campaigns which led to heated debate and in some cases large clashes between protestors on pilar opposite ends of the divide. The religious tension in Sortenza led to a rise in populist parties who campaigned under the banner of rights for the church whilst young people turn to more secular alternatives.
Historical Overview: The natives of Sortenza settled mostly along the banks of the Palnaro and its river valley which offered fertile land for their crops to grow and their cattle to graze on. In the 8th Century BC the city of Trestenna was founded. The city came into conflict with other rich city states such as Capulia on the coast and Lozara in the south. Through trade and commerce the cities became rich and were often In conflicts such as the ten years war between Trestenna and Capulia which saw the latter come under the influence of the former. The area surrounding Trestenna was conquered by the Sabarine empire in 312 BCE whilst more southerly areas came under their influence around a decade later. Sabarine influence quickly grew over the lands and they largely thrived under the rule of the Sabarine ‘Rex’ especially in the regions surrounding Trestenna. After the collapse of the first empire the lands that are now Sortenza fragmented into multiple city states. The largest of these were Capulia, Lozaro and Trestenna. Through several wars such as the Arganto conflicts which devastated the coastal Capulia region the city of Trestenna overcame and conquered the fragmented city states forming the Grand Duchy of Trestenna. The Grand Duchy of Trestenna later became a province of the newly decentralised Seconf Sabarine Empire. It was at this time that the olive tree came to symbolise the region that would become Sortenza.

By the Middle Ages many of the city states in the areas had United under Trestenna and the earliest semblance of what would become Sortenza was created. Under the rule of the Cesio Dynasty there was great advancement in culture, art and architecture as well as the introduction of systems to halt famines in the south and west. King Simon III founded new institutions such as the University of Trestenna and Capulia which became centres of learning in the Occidental world. It was also at this time that Apolistic Perendism began to be most fully embraced as monasteries, Cathedrals and churches sprung up all over the land. The Trestennan Grand Duke aligned himself with the Duchy of Palia and partakes in the sacking of Sabaria on the side of the black eagle. Grand Duke Ceaso III’s influence within the empire greatly and he was named as one of the 7 permanent electors of the Empire.

[early colonial developments]

When the first Great War broke out Sortenza alinged itself with the Galene league. The war was heavily criticised by the Sortenzan people many of whom had become disenchanted with the monarchy following events such as the Great Upheaval in which it was seemingly becoming an outdated form over governance. There were several small armed insurgences in large cities such as Trestenna against the war and the monarchy who got most of the brunt for Sortenzas entry into the war as it was increasingly seen as the nation being dragged along by more powerful allies. After the war ended in the defeat of the Galene league Sortenzas economy and make population had been crippled by the war and its colonial possessions such as Amarata had been stripped from it. This was the final straw for many. Huge crowds protested outside the royal palaces and there were several arson attacks at royal estates in the countryside. This led to full scale riots in Capulia after which the king at the time Rogio VIII saw his only other option as to abdicate. In the aftermath of these protests the Sortenzan Republic was proclaimed and the parliament would be situated in the heart of Trestenna.

Due to its turbulent interwar period and the heavy losses suffered during GW1 the Sortenzan nation was too weak to halt the advance of Palian forces during the war resulting in Sortenzan occupation. There were numerous incidents of street level revolts against the military occupation but nothing large scale ever surfaced. Sortenza was relieved of occupation in 1948 after the defeat of Palia during the second Great War and the Sortenzan Republic was restored.

Geopolitics: Sortenza is aligned with the Occidental confederation and as such shares close economic, military and cultural ties with those nations. Sortenza has a particular close connection to Palia as throughout history the peoples of what would become Sortenza and Palia shared close trading relations and in more recent histories the Palian occupation which created much anti Palian hostility in the post war period which in recent years has begun to be repaired. Sortenza also shares close relations to Amarata a former colony which was greatly influenced by Sortenzan culture. Sortenza has remained a stable presence on the world stage as it is a popular destination for many foreign nationals as well as being a cultural and educational centre with Sortenzan universities being well regarded the world over.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Republic of Mauntam
Nation Name (Common): Mauntam
Capital City: Fam Kibar
Requested Location: Right here (Give or take some more of the western river)
Requested Population: 39.2 million
Government Type: Unitary Presidential Republic

Cultural Overview:
Mauntam is fairly monogamous, culturally speaking. Primarily populated by Arabs, there are still bereber-esq tribes that live in the interior of the nation, as well as Kayig peoples living along the border with Kasaria. Ethnically, it’s about 87% Mauntamian , with Kayig speaks making up five percent of the population, and Berbers comprising the rest.

Religion wise, Mauntam is a majority Senitist nation, Mauntam are almost 90% Senit, while the rest of the populace is largely Perendist. There are minority populations of Macakkanists in the nation, but these are mostly immigrant workers and don’t receive much in the way of government support. Additionally, there is a growing populace of atheists, however many maintain a Senit appearance due to its engrainment in Mauntam culture.

Historical Overview:

Mauntam has been populated for a long time, predating written history. Initial settlements wre centred around the River Nebuma (Golden Waters), with agricultural societies beginning to take root along its fertile banks. These societies began to grow in size, organising themselves in individual coalitions between settlements organised in the defence of their territory. Ancient remains found along the banks suggest that battles were not entirely uncommon between these coalitions, though the context of these have been lost to time.

The first definitive settlement was Maau, which had slowly grown as the settlements of its coalition began to merge together. Maauite influence began to spread down the river, capitlising on it’s control of the river by trading eagerly with its neighbours, growing in wealth and power. It soon began to spread out. Its size and power fluctuated throughout history as the balance of power shifted with time, but the city itself survived, though its foundations had been burned a number of times during lost wars.

By the time the Sabarines arrived, the Maauite Empire was ancient, while it’s grain imports were greatly prized. However, centuries had led to an unstable monarchy that threatened to topple with every new crowned monarch as cousins came crawling out of the woodwork to claim the throne. This necessitated Sabarine occupation and, later, its absorption into the Empire, becoming its breadbasket and facilitating Sabarine exports to travel deep in Indica.

Maau was utilised by the Sabarines during its collapse as a powerbase, it’s wealth granting it dominion over a sizeable portion of northern and central Indica, becoming an important centre of culture during the initial decades of the Sabarine Collapse.

Its middle ages were rife with struggles with emergin threats to its power, particularly that of the Senitene Empire, conflicts between the two were not uncommon, though with Mauntam on the back foot. Its conquest was inevitable with the fall of Amarata, the Senitene Empire establishing it as its border with the SSE. The Empire’s collapse in the arrival of the Kayigs saw Mauntam regain its freedom though it found difficulty in restablishing itself. A series of conflicts broke out as it fought to regain both its position and control of the vital waterways that snaked throughout Indica. This was achieved by the end of the 1300s. It rested upon its laurels for much of following few centuries, its rulers becoming decadent at the expense of its people and military.
The end of the Mauuite Empire followed shortly after, the Kasarian Empire invaded the nation and took control, first through outright colonialism and attempted population transfers. Heavily unpopular, a number of revolts and rebellions saw the Kasaria depart and instead replace its outright control with a suzerainty, being only nominally a member of the empire. This was, of course, still unpopular and violence would still break out every few decades in resistance.

Nationalist organisations, spurred on by growing nationalist tendencies and romanticisms, began to form to reassert their traditional culture and force the imperialists out of the nation. Sabotage was frequent, as were scuffles, but these were overshadowed by the wars the imperial nation found themselves in, often having to draw in Mauntamians in support, while the nation also came under attack.

Nowhere was this more obvious than the First Great War, thousands of soldiers and ships were drafted to fight in the war, while it also became host to a concentrated menial effort to support the war effort. I can’t remember if the war reaches nort Indica, so that’ll effect their outlook on it, but many expected the war would lead to their independence, but the fact it didn’t sparked one of the largest revolts, with Mauntamianssoldiers defecting en masse to the rebels. It very nearly succeeded in achieving victory, but Kasarian counterattacks and Auressian material support saw the rebelion burn out, though rebellious activity continued for much of the period between then and the outbreak of the Second Great War.

Being a major theatre, Mauntamians experienced the war first hand. Though it depends on who their coloniser is, the Mauntamians fought in larger amounts than the First War and were involved in many of the major battles, while it was also an vital source of raw material for the war effort. The end of the war saw the end of Empire, with Mauntamians finally attaining its independence. It exceeded its nominally borders at first, though conceded some to Kasaria following the Continuation War, keeping control on the Arab-speaking regions it gained.

With a mineral rich nation, it was inevitable that they attracted the wandering eye out outside interests. With independence being granted to a monarchy, a republican rebel front was funded. The civil war lasted for much of the 60s and was a hotspot for the world powers, turning it into a serious proxy war. With the victory of the republicans, the nation began a rapid industrialisation, outside investment letting it recover

Modern day, it’s significantly more stable, but with oil field’s existing in the south of the country, it intends to start exploiting those resources, though interal resistance to these moves are stiff.

Economic Overview:
The Mauntamians economy is dominated by agriculture, raw minerals, and shipping along its rivers. Sitting at the mouth of the river, it’s an important junction that allows trade from Auressia and elsewhere to travel far into Indica, with much of its internal infrastructure dedicated to supporting the industry. Additionally, its many ancient sites and idyllic beaches has it a hotspot for international tourism, as well as the industries that support it.

Geopolitics:
Mauntamian is primarily an important player in Indica affairs, sitting at the centre of the cost and controlling an significant portion of the two most vital waterways that exist in both Northern and Central Indica. It possess a decently sized military capable of projecting its power, though this is largely relegated to Indican affairs, unless large international efforts give it the support to send troops abroad. Additionally, it plays on the world stage as its intentions to tap into its oil fields will see it being able to bring more to the bargaining table and possibly tip the scales in their balance. I was planning on trying a rp/newsnet arc where internal resistance to the drilling results in the government hiring protest breakers, sponsored/influenced by nations with stake in the operation, while some journalists work to uncover the story and inform the world, possibly damaging a number of nation’s reputations.

How did you find out about Levilion?: Just an absolute fever dream caused by a Kiwi
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: I’ve always been interested in building a non-European/North American nation and am fascinated by place in the Middle East that have modern societies with ancient histories.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Republic of Saiho
Nation Name (Common): Saiho
Capital City: Fujikawa
Requested Location:
Image

Requested Population: 88,483,947
Government Type: Unitary dominant-party semi-presidential republic under a military dictatorship

Cultural Overview: Saihoan culture has developed from it's past during the Aoikawi dynasty. Modern Saihoan culture has been heavily influenced by Huranian culture and the spread of Macakkanism in the country which has replaced traditional Saihoan religions. Recent generations of Saihoans have been influenced by Auressian and other western cultures originally due to the unequal treaties and then because of the influence of Auressian businesses and politics on the First Republic.

  • Ethnicity and Language: At the most recent census, 86.4% of the country claimed to be ethnically Saihoan. As the majority ethnic group the country's financial, judicial and government are overwhelmingly dominated by ethnic Saihoans. The one of the largest minority groups in the country are indigenous Pusung people on the Pusung islands. They make up a slim majority of the population on the islands and the Pusung language is recognised as a regional minority language on the islands despite being spoken by a majority of people there. Conflicts between Saihoan speakers and Pusungese speakers have erupted into violent riots and protests over the past decade over the government granting preferential treatment to Saihoans. Alongside the Pusung, ethnic Huranians are a significant minority north of the Yōtei mountain range and have also faced persecution and discrimination.
  • Religion: The dominant religion in Saiho is Macakkanism which is practiced by 78.9% of the population and is the official state religion of Saiho. The constitution does also grant freedom of religion and recognises Saiho's religious minorities. The most notable minority are Perendists as approximately 6% of the population identify as Perendist. Only around 10% of the country's population identify as atheist or irreligious despite this being promoted during the socialist led governments of the mid-20th century. Compared to it's neighbours the country is strongly religious with Macakkanist nationalists gaining prominence among the government.

Historical Overview: (https://iiwiki.us/wiki/User:Poshyte/Sandbox11)
The first civilisations in Saiho emerged in the Yōtei mountain range in the north of the country as various city states. The Aoikawi dynasty was the first Saihoan nation to emerge in the second century BC and was in control of much of the Saihoan peninsula. The Aoikawi dynasty lasted until 982 when it suddenly collapsed and split the area into several different warring states. The Yanami dynasty emerged as the victor out of the warring states and expanded the country past the Yōtei mountain range and across the northern coast of the Sea of Qes. Several more dynasties consolidated Saiho's grip on it's territories and presided over a golden age of Saihoan culture. Saiho, initially resistant to Auressian influence became increasingly influenced by Auressian powers which enforced a series of unequal treaties against the state.

The ruling Futamura dynasty which had been installed in 1857 by an Auressian intervention was overthrown and the First Republic of Saiho was declared in 1899. The First Republic joined the Second Great War on the side of the Coalition to retake the Eastern Straits of Qes from Songha and played a vital role in the Battle of the Straits. Following the war, the country was left in immense debt and faced the task of rebuilding much of it's infrastructure, in response to the government slashing the military budget alongside other factors a left-wing military faction led by Enatsu Munemori issued the Declaration of the People's Republic of Saiho and began the Saihoan civil war where the socialists emerged victorious. The People's Republic of Saiho was initially very successful and the standard of living in Saiho grew rapidly, worsening economic conditions as well as the armed forces fearing they would lose power led to a coup d'état and the declaration of the Third Republic of Saiho. The military junta was overthrown by student demonstrators in 1990 and replaced by a parliamentary democracy.

In 1997 radical forces in the army and navy attempted a coup d'état that killed many high-ranking government officials. After a period of instability known as the Red months, Yukiya Saeki became Prime Minister and led an coup d'état against the government which installed himself as President of Saiho. The 2002 constitution of Saiho granted the military 200 seats in the Assembly of the Republic and gave the military a larger role in politics. Since 2005 the country's economy has grown at a rapid pace.

Economic Overview: The Saihoan economy has changed dramatically over the past century. The country's economy industrialised prior to the second great war under policies enacted by the First Republican government. Factories and other industries were created and the country developed a thriving manufacturing sector. Under the People's Republic the country banned all imports to try and make the country self-sufficient although due to a lack of coal. State owned companies such as Wasoku which focused on communication did grow under the various regimes and remained prominent even after the fall of Socialism. Today Saiho is a middle-income country and has a GDP of $1.186 trillion. The country is a prominent importer and buyer of machinery and electrical equipment. Some of it's most notable exports include electronic equipment, food, manufactured goods, oil and other natural gases and vehicles. The country is a prominent extractor of oil and natural gases and has two major offshore oil fields, one in the Sea of Qes which it controls almost the entirety of and another off the coast of the Pusung islands which is disputed with Shang Fa.

Geopolitics: Since the fall of Socialism in Saiho it has become increasingly pro-western and anti-Songhan and is an important western ally in the Sea of Qes. Relations with the west have been better under the various period of democracy particularly under the brief democratic system of the 1990s. After the coup and the authoritarian government of Yukiya Saeki relations have soured to a degree over Yukiya trying to normalise relations with Songha. Problems over human rights also exist such as a lack of political freedoms, a total ban on LGBT representation in media and racist incidents between the majority Saihoan population and ethnic minorities. Saiho's influential military also plays a major role and is one of the most powerful in the area although is plagued with corruption and accusations of human rights abuses against minorities.

The country also claims the disputed island of TBD which is controlled by Shang Fa as it controls the remaining Pusung islands. It also has maritime disputes with other countries in the Sea of Qes over it's claim to the entire Qes oil field.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Albinian Republic - Respüblike elbinyen
Nation Name (Common): Albinia - Elbinye
Capital City: Nobkastır (Albinian name) - Noucastre (Western name)
Requested Location: Neighbouring Taraest or the central island chain, will sort this
Requested Population: 8 million odd
Government Type: Parliamentary republic

Cultural Overview: Albinians are a Sabarine ethnic group, who have been heavily influenced by Kayig and Hassab culture due to historical domination. Strong influences from both of these cultures can be observed, with different regions being more influenced by one or the other. The nation's slight majority senitene faith is a strong historical influence, but questions of stronger identification with Sabaria/Auressia and Kasaria/Idica have dominated cultural discourse
  • Ethnicity and Language: The majority ethnic group of Albinia are the Albinian people, though there are several minority populations in the country.
  • Religion: Albinia is a land of religious pluralism as well as one of contestation, with adherence to either Perendism or Senit having a major impact on one's social circles historically. Though this divide has been patched somewhat due to a strong sense of civic nationalism, it is still deeply present in the social landscape
Historical Overview: Albinia, named for the white cliffs of the northern coasts, was conquered by the Sabarines just after Taraest and despite its distance from the core was thoroughly Sabarianised with the indigenous rubic cultures suppressed as veterans of the Sabarine army were settled by the coasts. Though not the most important part of the empire by far, Albinia remained nonetheless wealthy due to the export of marble and copper. However, as Sabarine power waned, Kayig mercantile presence in the area grew and eventually, seeing an opportunity, the Neo-Senitene empire would invade around 1200. Again on the periphery of a much more powerful state, Albinia saw new cultural changes and began to adopt a new cultural and national identity which saw itself as the child of both empires while being itself independent. As the NSE faltered throughout the 1800s, these ideological currents led to the Renesketye, a rebirth of Albinian nationalism. Several political movements began organising a revolt, which would take place in 1843 and easily overwhelm the faltering Kasarian garrisons. Albinia joined the Occidental Confederacy soon after independence, but was caught up in its own domestic situation and remained relatively uninvolved in the first great war (could have fought against Taraest and taken some land in the treaty if that makes any sense). During the interwar period the religious question became a spicy topic, and a Senitene-oriented rebel group with Kasarian backing briefly siezed power during GW2. Following the armistice, violence between different religious political factions threatened to spill over into a civil war, leading the military to sieze power in a coup in 1951. Military rule continued for ten years, enforcing a brand of laicity which helped keep religious conflicts down in the short term. Following a return to civilian rule in 1962, Albinian politics have remained more or less stable, though with simmering sectarian tensions ocassionally leading to protests or violence.
Economic Overview: Albinia is a less developed country compared to most of the OC, probably comparable to much of the eastern bloc. The economy is dominated by mining, agriculture, and tourism, with rural poverty an issue.

Geopolitics: Though a minor player on the international chessboard, Albinia retains some relevance as a stepping stone between the Perendist and Senitene worlds and their respective cultures. It maintains the closest ties with Kasaria of any Auressian states, while by no means being part of its camp. The military is small and aconfessional, with a turkey-style mandate to preserve secular democratic rule in the country.

Miscellaneous Information Consider this the ghost of Okimili I guess

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Poblacht an Arghaelte
Nation Name (Common): Argathel
Capital City: Dunbeithe
Requested Location: https://iiwiki.us/wiki/File:Orthographic_Argathel.png
Requested Population: 9,981,213
Government Type: Semi-Presidential Republic

Cultural Overview:
The combination of historic and modern political decentralization--with the notable exception of the Lancero period--has created a patchwork of diverse, related people. Territories such as Dhagrheim, Ibary, and Mormaigh, which account for the vast majority of the population of the modern state, have all been parts of Tirmon, independent, parts of Castelana respectively and only became part of Argathel recently. The region from Carmacia to Cronbale is known for its prominent religious communities and devote Perendite populace, whereas Taobreac has the largest number of Ghael folk revivalists outside of Tirmon. Traditional components of the Ghaelic cultic milieu are present and shared with Perendite practitioners in Tirmon. Perendism is a much more prominent part of public life in Argathel than in its sister republic and was historically a breaking point between various states as monasticism was more prominent in the South. A large majority of the religious population is Perendite, but the socialist movement, primarily located on the west coast, has consistently promoted disestablishment wherever possible.

Ibary is the third part of the Caitas trinity and was formerly contained the capital of Fionglennfhada, the Caitas kingdom of the early middle ages.

Rollant province is one of the historical naval entrepots of Auressia and is currently being developed as a new financial centre by international investment groups, while also consistently electing a large number of socialists to high office.

Social complexity is reflected in dialectic variety, which is often called "village-speech". Village-speech in the south is distinguished by a preponderance of Sabarine mistranslation artifacts, in the north by anachronisms, and in the west by the influence of colonial patois.

  • Ethnicity and Language: Goidelic sub-groups with a Brythonic minority
  • Religion: Perendite supermajority

Historical Overview:
Argathel was inhabited by pseudo-pannager Insular Auressians by approximately 40,000 before present and later developed into a non-linear pottery culture. Cereal farming had several false starts in Argathel because of the widespread wetlands, which both provided easy access to food for knowledgeable gatherers and made farming difficult without intensive irrigation. Eventually, however, the widespread planting of fruiting trees by local inhabitants successfully created stable enough environments for small-scale glade agriculture. The Glade Clearing Culture existed from approximately 6000-1000 BCE and were slowly assimilated or replaced by Old Ghaels, who were the primary population in Argathel west of Carmacia by 800 BCE. Argathel, along with Tirmon, was historically incorporated into the Sabarine territory of Fuoriterra, although Argathel spent more time under imperial rule and less time in revolt than the northern parts of that territory.

During the Early Modern era, Mòrainea became the hegemonic power of West Auressia and the southern regions were the fair-weather tributaries of that state. During the late 18th century, the centralization of Mòrainea's monarchy ended the tributary system. Intermittent conflict between coastal cities slowed economic development and, by the mid 19th century, regressive absolutists became the predominant political faction in most states. Argathel's predominant state was allied with Tirmon during GW1, during which territories seized from Castelana were consolidated under Argathel. Argathel benefited from a wave of political refugees fleeing the revolution in Tirmon and, from 1912 to 1943, Argathel was known for its highly skilled public administrators and excellent quality of life. The superbly managed agrarian nation was one of the earliest to become incorporated into the Palian empire, partly from a large number of sympathizers in the government. Later, the coalition deposes the monarchy and forms a transitional government. The transitional government endured for decades until pressure from the emerging CoNA, which also had many sympathizers in the ruling class, forced them to form a new elected government in order to send their ultimately unsuccessful bid for membership.

In 2002, Argathel defaulted on its sovereign debt and had its finances restructured by an international coalition with support from the Confederacy and Albrennia. As a part of the plan to eliminate Argathel's public debt, foreign and domestic advisors formed a new commission to advise the government. Some of those suggestions included a reduction in public allowances for small-scale farming, which both composed a disproportionate sector of the population, but also contributed to other public costs such as free healthcare in rural areas and landbanking, which was a traditional activity of the state. The ongoing crisis and international intervention in the economy has greatly restricted the government and their ability to act at home and abroad; some commentators consider Argathel to be a colony of the Invisible Empire.

Economic Overview:
Argathel's economy is highly developed with a GDP over 200 billion per year and a large service sector employing 70% of the population. Despite generally high income, Argathel is often considered an uncompetitive economy because of it's low growth and relatively high (23%) agriculture employment. Although there is a high agricultural employment rate, the sector generates relatively few exports from its highly decentralized family farming operations and state funded wildlife management.

The Southern Cùinn, Argathel's national currency, has struggled to compete with the Commonwealth Mark centralized currency and other dominant currencies. From 1983 to 1998, the Southern Cùinn was pegged to the Commonwealth Mark, but the slow rate of economic growth over that period made that association progressively more and more detrimental to domestic markets. After 1998, the Southern Cùinn was a floating currency, although the central bank did intervene, periodically making leveraged buys Southern Cùinn. At the same time, a broad regime of price controls on food and other essentials was introduced to compensate for price fluctuations.

There are no proven reserves of oil or gas. Historical coal mining operations were established on the west coast, but those reserves have been mostly exhausted.

Geopolitics: Because one of the largest voting blocks is explicitly socialist revolutionaries, Argathel is often a supporter of international socialism. Because of recent economic woes, the national government is often subject to oversite from international bodies.

Postby Acturia » Sun May 14, 2023 10:36 am

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): State of Acturia (tùr Óxonõ)
Nation Name (Common): Acturia (Óxontùr)
Capital City: Nefeyant (Nèfeyénet)
Requested Location: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ ... /claim.png
Requested Population: 47 million, including ca. 500,000 people in the Vorod Territory, and 5,000 people in the Tsetsegsiin (Cècexsìn) area.
Government Type: Itʼs complicated™.
Historically, the State of Acturia was ruled as a constitutional monarchy in which power was divided between the monarch (later including not only the monarch himself, but also his inner circle), the nobility (through the Chamber of Lords) and the clergy (through the Chamber of Heaven). The constitution granted virtually all real power to the monarch, with the chambers being more advisory in nature, although in reality, the monarch would usually not dare act against the chambers.
In the Acturian Revolution (1957–1958), the monarchy was ousted from power and a council of military leaders took its place. The Chamber of Lords became the Chamber of the People, a body of representatives directly elected from the general population. The Chamber of Heaven stayed in place. A new constitution was drafted that forsaw the gradual transition of all power to the Chamber of the People, however, this process was put on halt due to the numerous flare-ups in the Vorod Conflict.
Thus, Acturia has a parliament consisting of three chambers, one of which is elected and two of which appoint themselves.

Cultural Overview: The main culture group of Acturia are the Turians. Turians are a con-culture that takes influences from the surrounding Slavic, Mongolic and Turkic peoples.
  • Ethnicity and Language: The primary ethnic group in Acturia are the Turians (see above), who inhabit the fertile land by the river which flows through the eastern half of the nation. As this is where most cities lie, Turians account for some of 90% of the population, eventhough minority ethnic groups inhabit wide territories, particularly in the mountains, in the Vorod Territory and northern provinces in general, and generally everywhere where Turians do not dominate. Large groups include Slavs (similar in culture and language to those in the bordering Bolshtine Republic), Mongolic, Turkic and whatever else is found across the nationʼs borders.
Language mostly matches ethnicity. The official language of Acturia is Standard Turian, with other languages present in the nation having little official recognition, but being used in practice by the state in administration and education. Turian historically was and to this day still kind of is written with several different writing systems.
One of the two major classical languages of Acturia is Classical Turian, which continues to be taught at many schools, be used as a liturgical language by most sects of both major religions in the country, and is the source of many a neologism in Standard Turian. Furthermore, Sanskrit is an important liturgical language in the south of the nation. Historically, Sanskrit was an important language further north as well, but its use has largely been replaced by Classical Turian there.
  • Religion: Classical Perendism (here known as tóreme perènivõ) dominates in the disputed Vorod Territory, which is the only part of Acturia to not to have a long-standing Jyanist tradition. In Acturia proper, only the northern areas are majority-Perendist and often have a significant Jyanist presence. Furthermore, two urban areas that are located within otherwise Jyanist areas are majority-Perendist: Nefeyant and Shotay. The southern city of Yarin only has a minor Perendist presence.
Jyanism (here known as tóreme tiyónivõ) is dominant in most of the country, especially in rural areas, where only few Perendists can be found. Mainstream Jyanism in Acturia uses Classical Turian rather than Sanskrit as a literary language, with the notable exception of the southernmost regions, where schools of Jyanism tend to be much more orthodox and insist on (badly pronounced) Sanskrit.
The city of Yarin is often seen as the main centre of Jyanism in Acturia, while Perin is its Perendist æquivalent.
Several smaller religious movements in remote corners of the country are a direct continuation of traditional Acturian beliefs that predate both Jyanism and Perendism in the region. Demographically, their presence in modern-day Acturia is negligible, as their population numbers in the low ten thousands and is situated largely in a couple of remote mountain villages. Nevertheless, developing these might be interesting in seeing what influence they could have had on both major religious groups in the country (e.g. holidays and other traditions).
Smaller to notable presences of Senit and Macaccanism can also be expected.
While many people, especially in urban areas, might not be religious on a spiritual level, adherence to a religion and belonging to that community is an important part of most Acturiansʼ identities. Tensions between different religious communities are not unheard of.
    Rough percentages:
    - 30% Perendism - 60% Jyanism - 10% other or no religion; More exact numbers will be figured out in accordance to this map:
    https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ ... .41_pm.png
Historical Overview: Acturia was a series of smaller kingdoms that went back and fourth until their incorporation into the growing Empire of Harris Khan, of which both Acturia and Bigland («Bigland» is the name in the doc as well as the name Tyr and I used while discussing this application) claim to be the descendants. The Slavic borderlands probably were part of the same nation as Bolshtinia until the 18th/19th century, or alternatively were independent.
Until the mid-20th century, Acturia was a monarchy that traced its roots back to the abovementioned empire. In 1957, the Acturian revolution broke out in response to the worsening of living conditions since the two invasions (see below), culminating in the dissolution of the monarchy in 1958.
For a century now, there have been tensions with its large eastern neighbour, Bigland. These started with the two invasions of Acturia (1927–1928 and 1939–1941), during which Bigland attempted to incorporate Acturia into its new empire. Following these were the Vorod Wars (1956–1959, 1993–1997 and 2006–2009), during which Acturia occupied parts of the Vorod province of Bigland. Bigland was able to push Acturia back a bit during the Second Vorod War, but Acturia manages to push it back again during the Third Vorod War. During the Third Vorod War, Bigland tries to invade Acturia proper (the urbanised bit) rather than only going for Vorod, which possibly caused a lot of human harm inside and economic problems beyond Acturia.
Economic Overview: Acturia is a country of economic disparaties. The urban areas around the river are significantly wealthier than any other urban areas, which in turn are wealthier than rural areas. Urban Acturia is a hub for cheap manufacturing for the export market, while rural Acturia is agriculturally-dominated. There is some mining (e.g. iron, coal), but it is not a huge:tm: industry. In the north, forestry and fishing are important.

Geopolitics: Acturia has very bad relations with its eastern neighbour. Its political system (the lack of progress in democratisation) and the occupation of the Vorod Territory would be controversial internationally, with Acturia trying to portray it as justified in the face of continued problems with Bigland.

Ideally, Acturia would have tried to align itself with Pelemia and the Bolshtine Republic, or at least tries to maintain somewhat close relationships with them.

The term «Vorod Territory» refers to all parts of the Vorod region that are controlled by Acturia. It should be noted that many parts of that territory have been under Acturian control since some seventy years and most locals hold Acturian citizenship.
For the exact borders of the Vorod Territory, see here:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ ... 0079dd.png

Miscellaneous Information

How did you find out about Levilion?: I already am here.
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: God forced my hand!
Anything else to add?: I guess I am putting it here, but these are alternative names for Acturia I have come up: Tyrochnia, Chenturia, Okhontur. I have not yet fully decided whether or not Acturia should be called one of these instead, but they could also just be historical terms.

Postby Sainte-Melitine » Thu Jul 20, 2023 3:00 pm

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): United Phalansteries of Sainte-Mélitine
Nation Name (Common): Sainte-Mélitine
Capital City: Tétan Marangatou
Requested Location: https://i.imgur.com/eMkjTw6.png
Requested Population: 45,288,473
Government Type: Parliamentary republic (more like a semi-theocratic eldership council republic)

Cultural Overview: Sainte-Mélitine is a post-colonial, predominantly indigenous/mestizo culture. The core social organization is based on mestizo cultural units which overthrew the colonial planter class in the early 20th century. Despite this, colonial influences on language and especially religion remain prevalent and a plurality of the population identifies as mestizo. Enclaves of Auressian culture can still be found, especially in larger cities on the eastern coast.

  • Ethnicity:
    Mestis (Mestizo) (~37%)
    Paura (!Guarani) (~31%)
    Tchatcha (!Mapuche) (~19%)
    Auressians (~13%)
  • Language:
    Princepean
    Blaykish
    Paurois
    Tchatchais
    Runasimi
    Tatinawa
  • Religion:
    Classical Perendism (~34%)
    Secular spiritualism (~23%)
    Animistic pantheism (~21%)
    Apostolic Perendism (~14%)
    Irreligion (~5%)
    Morist sects (~3%)

Historical Overview:
Sainte-Mélitine follows the established history of Marceaunia Minor as a Blaco-Vervillian colonial possession. Prior to the colonial era, Paurois, Tchatchais, and Runasimi-speaking societies cultivated maize, cassava, and yerba-mate, establishing communalist agricultural societies across the region, dominated in the 16th century CE by the southwestern Tchatcha kingdom of Calquouin.

Terre de Sainte-Mélitine was founded in 1566, ruled from the Blaco-Vervillian colonial stronghold of Fort Dumont, a trading post and factory built next to the Indigenous fishing port of Tétan Marangatou. Through the early 17th century, Auressian influence in the south expanded through land seizure, the development of a plantation economy based on slave labour. Indigenous persons were the predominant labour force in the region, and groups that were not overcome by the colonists were forcibly displaced into the arid interior. The plantation economy was based heavily on cash crops such as cotton, tobacco, and tea, though exploitation of ore deposits in the highlands and salt pans in the interior were major drivers of industrial activity, especially toward the end of the 18th century.

>CSM lore (perhaps, Sainte-Mélitine is the first country to secede in 1831?)

The nascent Republic of Sainte-Mélitine was a planters’ plutocracy, successfully defending its independence in the Continental War.

>Other conflicts arising with territorial changes, probably something with the War of the Four Nations
In the 1890s and early 1900s, a growing socialist-spiritualist movement based in the interior came into conflict with the government. Sansseauism (!Fourierism) developed from a set of independent mining and industrial communities known as phalansteries, combining communal living that defied common social norms and integrated workspaces, unified by spiritualist activity. Most phalansteries were established by free Mestis people, though many became sanctuaries for escaped slaves and formed alliances with Indigenous tribes.

The planter plutocrats in the RSM tolerated the phalansteries as communities of religious fanatics living in the hills, but late industrialization led to greater demand for mineral resources to sustain the Mélitinian economy which in turn led to conflict over mineral access. What initially began with skirmishes between the phalansteries and planter mercenaries escalated with military intervention and a subsequent slave revolution, leading to the foundation of the United Phalansteries as the resulting social order in ~1910.

The civil war between the planters and the phalansteries would have covered the beginning of the First Great War. I'd anticipate with that throwing the country into strife, they'd remain neutral in the broader global conflict while attempting to stabilize internally.

With the Second Great War, I'm a bit more divided on what should be. I could see Sainte-Mélitine siding with the more left-leaning Coalition or opportunistically trying to take some jabs against Amandine's regional hegemony by siding with the Lanzists.

Economic Overview:
The Mélitinian economy is a mix of a Scandinavian-style late-industrial economy with a more significant agricultural sector – more like Denmark in 1980 than Denmark in 2020 so I’d estimate a GDPPC of $31k to $32k. The market is a socialist mixed set with production still focused on phalansteries as core political and economic units which limits market access overall. This likely submits Mélitine’s economy – or at least market access to imports and exports – to the whims of its neighbours more than it would otherwise.

Major exports would be salt, REMs incl. lithium, tea, cotton, garments, heavy manufacturing, and some post-industrial activity
Major imports would be energy, technology, and some services.
Large salt flats in the interior containing salt (obviously) but more importantly lithium would be the key asset propelling Sainte-Mélitine to a degree of global economic importance.

Geopolitics:
Sainte-Mélitine is opposed to Amand hegemony over Marceaunia Minor but subject to that hegemony itself nonetheless. They would actively support Chawpisuyu’s autonomy which would probably create tensions with Rocia too. Relations with Aiyaca would probably be more positive.

Miscellaneous Information

How did you find out about Levilion?: I heard about it from Devink and Keian when they joined awhile back but I took awhile to come up with something that would be interesting to build out.
Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: I speak French which is helpful and Guarani and Mapuche fortunately have a lot of online resources that I can work with which I find helps with avoiding discouragement. In broad strokes for the concept, I took a couple courses on Atlantic history in my undergrad and found it really fascinating so this is definitely an opportunity to do something with that which I haven't done previously in worldbuilding. I also wanted to do some work with religious socialism since it's a rare stream to actually get tackled in NS and when I've seen it I've been underwhelmed by the execution.
Anything else to add?: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Postby Majisia » Wed Aug 02, 2023 10:49 pm

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): The State of Majisia
Nation Name (Common): Majisia
Capital City: Nyawlbitang
Requested Location: Is4
Requested Population: 49 million
Government Type: Unitary One-Party Semi-Presidential Republic

Cultural Overview: Majisian culture closely relates to, but is notably distinct from, Trengglunese and Bansunese cultures. Cultural influences from larger nations, such as nearby Songha or former colonizer Tyrnica, have affected Majisian culture as well. Post-Black Revolution, the Grand Party of Majisians invested in a 'revival' of Majisian culture, encouraging the populace to practice traditional Majisian arts, artisanship, music, and literature, as well as making many traditional Majisian holidays national holidays, something which the monarchy had not done in order to further appeal to western powers.
  • Ethnicity and Language: 85% of Majisia's population is ethnic Majisian. The remaining 15% consists of Songhese, Trenggulunese, and Bansunese along with a smaller minority of Tyrnicans. The national language is Majisian, also called Majisic, a language related to Kakawin and Bansunese. Songhese, Kakawin, Bansunese, and Tyrnican are recognized minority languages.
  • Religion: Macakkanism is the majority religion in Majisia, with 75% of the population following it. Religions with a significant minority include Senit, Perendism, and Jyani, while Aulaism has a lesser but still notable minority. A small portion of the population in rural Majisia still practices traditional Majisian folk religions; however, this is becoming increasingly rare.

Historical Overview: The first entities to call the land that would become Majisia home consisted of mountainous and island tribes and city-states, some of them ancestors of modern Majisian peoples. Trenggulunese city-states controlled a large portion of Majisia's mainland coastline for much of its early history, resulting in the spread of Macakkanism throughout pre-Majisian territories. By the late 17th century, a unification of Majisia was underway, resulting in the creation of the Kingdom of Majisia by the early 1700s. However, it was around this time that Tyrnica began its colonization of Bansunay, Trenggulun, and Majisia; Tyrnican colonizers permitted the continuation of the Majisian monarchy under Tyrnican governance. The King of Majisia acted as a ceremonial head of state, while Tyrnican authorities managed the colonies laws, defense, trade, and foreign affairs. It was also around this time that Perendism was brought to the region by Tyrnican missionaries; however, they were not involved within the greater scope of Tyrnica's colonial government, thus allowing Macakkanism to retain its established majority. The Great Upheavel does not affect Tyrnica's Isuanese colonies in any notable manner.

At the time of the First Great War, as Trenggulunese and Bansunese peoples began to revolt against Tyrnican rule with assistance from Rythene and Songha, Majisia remained loyal to the Tyrnican cause. Majisia, now a semi-autonomous Protectorate of Tyrnica since 1895, joined the Galene League and engaged in the First Great War with Tyrnica in a limited capacity. With the loss of GW1 and the signing of the Treaty of Arden, Tyrnican influence and interest within Majisia and the greater Isuan region dissipated. This sudden dissipation left Majisia as an independent state and made it the Kingdom of Majisia once again. The sudden exit of Tyrnica left Majisia with much leftover Tyrnican infrastructure, settlers, and soldiers. The monarchy allowed Tyrnican settlers and soldiers passage home if they chose to do so; however, some stayed, resulting in a Tyrnican minority in Majisia. While it was now independent, this sudden and sharp change caused economic issues in Majisia for a few years as the government attempted to find its footing on its own.

As the 1920s began to encroach upon the world, so did Albrennian interest begin to encroach upon Majisia. A desire for some of Majisia's resources, such as sulfur and diamonds, drove Albrennia's interests in the region. The western-aligned Majisian monarchy allowed Albrennian pillars to access the state's resources, forming dissent within the common Majisian. Various radical groups began to recruit and rally members against Albrennia's presence and the enablist monarchy. These groups allied themselves with the axis of Songha and Bansunay, who provided assistance in combating the monarchy. In 1922, this tension came to a head as the Black Revolution erupted. Spearheaded by two radical Majisian groups: the Grand Party of Majisians (GPM) and the Majisian Cultural Liberation Front (MCLF), the Black Revolution resulted in violent protests, riots, and armed skirmishes against loyalist forces across the country. The revolution succeeded, and the King of Majisia and his family were ousted and exiled to Kaona, never to return.

The now-authoritarian Majisia, known as the State of Majisia, joins the Songhese Empire's Alliance and assists Songha and friends in the buildup to GW2. When the war broke out in 1937, Majisia's forces fought for the Alliance within the Isuan region, fighting Coalition forces in the tropical theaters of the War in the East. Majisia never claims territory for itself and thus loses nothing at the end of the war in 1943; however, the nation is occupied by Coalition forces from 1943 to 1948.

Economic Overview: Majisia has a decently strong economy thanks to a good export industry. Majisia's main exports include agricultural produce (mostly tropical fruits), garments, machinery parts, industrial chemicals, fish and other sea products, sulfur, diamonds, carbon, coal, palm oil, hemp, artisan crafts, electronic products, and manufactured goods. Majisia's top imports include refined petroleum, crude petroleum, petroleum gas, vaccines, antiserum, blood, toxins, and cultures, as well as motor vehicle parts, transport equipment, electronics, and manufactured goods. Majisia's main trade partners include Songha, Bansunay, Rythene, and Tyrnica. Majisia's Nominal GDP per capita is $14,282, and its GDP PPP per capita is $37,751.

Majisia's military spending consists of 11% of its budget, having been boosted in recent years in an effort to modernize the forces. Majisia's military is under the wing of the Majisian Department of Defense, which includes five branches: The Majisian Army, Majisian Navy, Majisian Air Force, and the Majisian Coast Guard. The force has around 300,000 active-duty members and 45,000 in reserve or auxiliary positions.

Geopolitics: Majisia's strongest relations are currently with Bansunay and Songha, with the three being each other's most frequent trade and defense partners. While relations with neighbor and cultural relative Trenggulun exist, they are shaky at best due to the polarization between Majisia's and Trenggulun's systems of government. As its anti-western sentiment and semi-isolationism have somewhat subsided during the late 2010s, Majisia has begun to open up more relations with nations such as Tyrnica and others.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Federated People's Republic of the Kumamo
Nation Name (Common): The Kumamo
Capital City: Kukemindu
Requested Location: clicky
Requested Population: ~60,000,000
Government Type: Federal council republic

Cultural Overview:

The Kuba people (Bakuba) have historically been the dominant ethnic group, with their language and culture gradually disseminating across the Kumamo Basin since the 13th century. Trade and intermarriage led to the assimilation of many groups in the heartland, but numerous outliers still exist in the periphery regions. The Ebe people represent the second largest group, existing primarily in the nothern borderlands, with a strong history of independent city-states coloring their relationship with other groups. The Wazi are a prominent minority that mostly inhabit the northwestern reaches of the country, more closely affiliated with !Arabic and Kasarian groups than the Kuba or Ebe. Other notable minorities include the Mwo, Lumu, Nanga, Buku, So, and Lawi.

However, since the 1950s there has been a push towards a unified "Kumamine" identity, with a standardized version of the Kuba language (Kikuba) implemented as an official language, based on its previous status as a trade language and lingua franca. While this was met with some resistance, many of the smaller ethnic groups had already been partly creolized into the Bakuba due to Amaratan relocation programs, and assurance of federal autonomy assuaged most suspicions.

Small populations of Amaratans and Hassabs are also present in the country.

Ethnicity and Language:
Kuba (63%), Ebe (17%), Wazi (13%), various others (7%).

Religion:

Bokofúnga, a form of syncretic Perendism, is the dominant religion. They recognize the Sabarine Apostolic Church, but a lot of Perendists probably consider them heretical or even heathenous. Various traditional Idican animist faiths are also followed in more rural areas. The government is officially secular, after a period of intense anticlericalism and state atheism immediately following independence.

Historical Overview:

The Kingdom of Kukemindu emerged at the delta of the Kumamo River in the early 1400s, rising to prominence as an entrepot for trade between Auressian merchants, coastal chiefdoms, and interior tribes. With time, this led many surrounding polities to become tributaries and protectorates of Kukemindu, causing Kuba language and culture to spread throughout the region and creating what is historiographically called the "Empire of the Kumamo".

Beginning in the 1700s, a rising demand for slaves, ivory, and other valuable goods caused Kukemindu to start squeezing its satellite states particularly hard to rake in profits. Combined with encroachments by Kasarian and Sortenzan interests on the fringes of the empire, this caused the constituent parts of the empire to resist and conflict with the monarchy, leading to a partial collapse in the late 1800s.

Following the First Great War, the entire region was annexed by the Amaratan Empire and became a global source for oil, rubber, and various important metals. The indigenous population was subjected to nightmarish conditions as ultranationalist Amaratan government demanded ever more resources to fuel its war machine.

Following the end of the Second Great War, rebel groups from various ethnic groups and causes rallied to seize control from the colonial government, inspiring a mass uprising and a declaration of independence. A brief civil war was fought from 1945-1952; however, the country was saved from splitting along ethnic lines due to cross-cutting popularity of the People's Front for the Liberation of the Kumamo (PFLK/LBBN), which successfully steered the conflict into one between traditionalist, bourgeois, and socialist elements.

The Federated People's Republic of the Kumamo is officially declared in 1953.

More modern lore is TBD.

Economic Overview:

The Kumamo can be described as an "upper middle-income country". I would most readily compare it to a country like Mexico or Turkey, in terms of overall quality of life and industrialization.

Beginning in the 1960s, it began to leverage its oil, diamond, and cobalt reserves into large amounts of wealth that was then used to shift the economy into one based on food processing and heavy industry, and since the 1990s it has been diversifying into tourism, pharmaceuticals, and electronics as well. In 2023, the Kumamo's major exports include packaged medicaments, textiles, electronic components, industrial vehicles, and assorted rubber and plastic products. To fuel this industry, it needs to import machine parts, precision instruments, and assorted advanced components.

The economy runs on a decentralized planned model in which all firms are either worker-owned cooperatives or state-owned enterprises, and most population centers are connected to a enterprise resource planning network that leads back to various hubs, ultimately reaching the Federal Economic Coordination Center (FECC/FNBN) in Kukemindu, which runs around the clock monitoring, projections for, and coordination of factories, distribution centers, and transport networks throughout the country. The advent of fibre-optic cables and mobile phones has led to an ongoing revolution in the way this system works.

Geopolitics:

As part of a broadly anti-imperialist policy, the Kumamo regularly reaches out to other former colonies with offers of foreign aid and treaties, but its guarded stance against foreign interference in its economy somehwat limits their access to international organizations.

In particular, they're interested in entreating Kasaria and any other states opposed to Albrennia and its neocolonial influences, mostly as allies of convenience. However, they also want to support Leftist political parties and insurgencies throughout Idica, to spread their ideology and hopefully create new allied states, putting them at odds with many potentially sympathetic countries.

Their military is oriented mostly towards defending their own borders, with some special attention paid to air assault tactics and anti-air defense infrastructure.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): Empire of the Great Arani
Nation Name (Common): Nabiya
Capital City: Sonaghar
Requested Location:Su6
Requested Population: 112 million
Government Type: Absolute monarchy (de jure), Monarchic stratocracy (de facto)

Cultural Overview: The Arani Empire is predominantly Indo-Aryan with the largest groups being Marathi and Gujarati. There are also some Dravidian and Mathastani minorities in the south-east and north-east respectively. The Arani Empire is an old and proud state, being home to one of the oldest human civilisations in Levillion. The country's cultural outlook is deeply engrained within the state religion which holds the head of state as a pseudo-divine figure and a direct descendant of the original 'mother of creation' who birthed the world. The coasts of the empire continue to bare the scars of colonialism with more Auressian cultural influence visible here. Arani society also continued to be dominated by the Nabiyan caste system which has deep cultural and historical influence throughout the country.
  • Ethnicity and Language: Indo-Aryan ethnicity. Marathi (most common language), Sanskrit (legal & religious)
  • Religion: Aranianism is the state religion of the empire, with a considerably large Jyanist minority. Within the empire Aranian belief is seen as largely congruent with various elements on Jyanist belief into a syncretic belief that differs somewhat to traditional Jyanism.
Historical Overview: The origins for the Arani Empire can be traced back to the ancient Indranila River civilisation one of the earliest complex civilisations in Levillion. Various city states and kingdoms ruled across this area for thousands of years leading to the development of Jyanist religion and philosophies. Gradually however the region came under the control and influence of the Sonaghar Empire as well as its Aranian religion. Gradually all of Nabaia would come under the influence of Sonaghar leading to the proclamation of the Great Arani Empire around 200BCE. Arani rule would continue to be pervasive across Nabaia for thousands of years. Though challenged by succession crises and civil wars the empire would for the most part remain intact. Around the 17th century with the arrival of Auressian imperialism to Nabaia, the empire came under considerable strain and began to fracture through civil war known as the 'Era of great strife'. Principalities would act almost independently leading to rising Auressian influence and the empire falling under foreign domination. Whilst Auressian control would predominantly be isolated to the empire's coasts, their influence would extend into the empire's heartlands through a series of puppet rulers.
Following the Great War however, the empire would undergo a revolution led by secular republicans looking to overthrow the monarchy and remove foreign influence from Nabaia. With the aid of Auressian armies, the Senapati would crush the rebellion and secure himself as de facto dictator of the empire, side-lining the Arani to a merely spiritual and figurehead role. As the twentieth century wore on, Auressian influence in Nabaia declined considerably, leading to the seizure of foreign assets and the reclamation of 'occupied' territory across the empire's former territories. This widespread asset seizure has led many in the international community to view the Arani Empire as something of a pariah state.
Despite the end of foreign domination, the empire's fortunes did not recover, wealth inequality rules supreme and most communities outside of the capital remain impoverished partly due to the government's isolationist stance on foreign policy and investment. Such grievances have coalesced around the socialist resistance led by the Communist Party of Nabaia which had created independent anarchist communes across the countryside and continues to wage an active guerrilla war against the Arani government.

Economic Overview: The Arani economy remains considerably underdeveloped outside of the capital, heavily relying on agricultural production and mineral extraction. Considerable future potential exists within its resource extraction sector but this would require considerable and likely foreign investment which the government is unwilling to consider at present and incapable of funding due to the insurgency.
Main Imports: Fuel and oils, machinery, iron/steel, chemicals
Main exports: Minerals - particularly lithium, silver, copper and gemstones, Textiles, Agricultural products, fish and foodstuffs

Geopolitics: The Arani Empire is a rather isolationist state and generally remains uninvolved in international affairs outside of protecting what it considers to be its 'natural' zone of influence in greater Nabaia. However, the empire does tend to traditionally align itself with Songha diplomatically. The Arani Empire maintains a border dispute with (neighbouring country) over plot Su6-I which is claims as its own territory. The Empire also maintains a large professional and reserve army due to the militaristic nature of the Senapati regime, nevertheless its forces are considerably outdated and is barely capable of maintaining its own security given the ongoing communist insurgency. The Arani navy is currently insufficient to properly patrol its national waters leading to the rise of piracy and one of the key focuses of the regime will be modernisation of the fleet to protect its waters.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): The Blessed Land of Elessia and Presepe
Nation Name (Common): Elessia
Capital City: Citaviola
Requested Location: Oc17
Image
(Capital underlined)

Requested Population: 23 million, though with a significant population of refugees and displaced people elsewhere, likely 2-3 million total.
Government Type: Theocratic Directorial Republic

Cultural Overview:
Elessia's people have an ancient heritage, dating back thousands of years. Its traditions, customs, and cultural fascinations have been influenced primarily by the Sabarine Empires, as well as the Hassabites which occupied the peninsula. Its cultural roots are very close to those of its neighbor, Sortenza, though religious differences between Fiorism and Apostolic Perendism have resulted in minor cultural divergences.
  • Ethnicity and Language: Much of the ethnic makeup of Elessia is Lozaran, with other numerous, smaller ethnic groups coming from foreign religious converts. The primary languages spoken are Peninsularan (a "standard" language developed as a unifying dialect and the primary language used for Fiorism), Lozaran, and Sortenzan.
  • Religion: Elessia is majority Fiorist, a religious movement originating in the country during the Great Upheaval, though there are still significant Perendist and Morist minorities. Fiorism is a syncretic faith between Perendism and Morism, originally taking the more strict doctrine of Perendism and combining it with the broad folk traditions associated with Morism. It is a Theocracy governed by the Communal Fiorist Church, nominally under the principles of Theodemocracy, and thus Fiorism represents a major part of its culture and society.

Historical Overview:
The first cities in what would become Elessia date back to antiquity, with ancient city states of Vetus Portum (now Viridoram) and Petranera dating back to as far as 1200 BCE. Between 413 and 330 BCE, the city states would be conquered or annexed by the First Sabarine Empire. Soon after, the cities were organized into the provinces of Lidomale and Hasena, which would become part of the core imperial lands during most of its history. By the late 6th century, however, invaders from the South and instability within the empire would see most of the peninsula fall to the Hassab. Eventually the lands would be reconquered by the Second Sabarine Empire.

As the influence of the Second Empire waned in the peninsula, Elessia would once again be broken into city-states. The Kingdom of Sortenza would annex Petranera in the 17th century. In 1702, the cities of Citaviola, Viridoram, and Boscusecu would sign a treaty of confederation, creating the Duchy of Elessia. Petranera would be acquired from Sortenza after the signing of the Treaty of Capulia, and soon after the eastern city of Punente would join under threat of invasion. During the turn of the 19th century, instability would boil over in the cities of Petranera and Citaviola into an open republicanist revolt. This would eventually be suppressed, though not before a group of refugees, fleeing the fighting and destruction, made their way into the desert and founded the Fiorist faith. By 1860, this new faith had spread across Elessia, supplanting local Perendist and Morist belief.

During the First Great War, Elessia maintained armed neutrality. Despite protestations from both the Coalition and Galene League, the country kept its ports open to all combatant nations. The militarization of the nation would continue to intensify in the interwar years as nationalism increased. Soon after, Lanzism would sweep through Elessia and result in a close partnership between it and Palia during the Second Great War. As Elessia's militarization was focused on appearance of might, rather than true power projection, its war effort would collapse after the Battle of Montigné and the coalition invasion.

Post-war, Elessia's venture into democracy was rocky and faced consistent issues of widespread corruption, lingering neo-Lanzist sentiments, and the reconsolidation of power under the Communal Fiorist Church. After the Church reasserted itself and dissolved the secular institutions, it has been embroiled in a large scale insurgency with a coalition of various anti-regime groups.

Economic Overview:
Under the Blossoming Flowers economic policy, the economy is divided between state-owned entities and cooperatives. Its primary industries are resource extraction and refinement, including rare earth metals in its mountainous west, offshore oil in the Hesperian Ocean, and clay along the coast. It also has a sizable manufacturing industry, especially in the sectors related to the military. Owing to internal strife, cooling of trade relations with its neighbors in recent years, and economic mismanagement, Elessia's economy is currently in the middle of a major crisis, resulting in its standard of living being one of the lowest in Auressia.

Geopolitics:
Elessia is a black sheep in Western Auressia. Its relationship with its neighbors is strained by its historic suppression of minority religions, shift toward authoritarian government policies, and the ongoing internal conflict which has resulted in an exodus of Elessian refugees. It also sees friction with its fellow Occidental Confederation members due to fundamental disagreements with the organization's trajectory. This position has been tempered by its close ties with Sulatia and support for the international socialist movement, which has led to the country opening itself up more to international cooperation in an effort to counter its economic downturn and seek support against its ongoing insurgency.

Historical Overview:

What is today the Catherinese Republic was initially settled by Indigenous Marceaunians, in the areas that would initially be colonized along the Rum Gulf these included the Yahini, Tulmeq, and Oleskiyu. Colonist arrived in the area initially as part of economic endeavors by colonial powers, the region would be split between several colonial holding held by Blayk, Rythene, and Vervillia starting in 1510, by the end of the century the majority of the Colonial holdings would be transferred to or taken over by Rythene.

The early colonial landscape developed a mixed culture amongst the settled population. With Vervillian descended peoples more prominent in the northern coastal areas, while further south Rythenean settlers dominated. The colonies stayed relatively close to the coastal areas, the wilds being seen as too dangerous as tensions with the Indigenous population grew. Northern expansion west into the fertile plains by Vervillian settlers increased these tensions. In 1627 Vervillian farmers came into conflict with the local Yahini people. The killing of several at the Massacre of Guéville started a localized conflict that snowballed into a wider anti-colonial conflict dubbed King Clements War, So called after the indigenous leader, known as King Clement (born Auswahani). The war pitted the mostly farmer militias of the settlers against a coalition of indigenous people's. While the settlers ultimately won, the colonial population had significantly decreased by up to nearly 30%, many of whom died in roving massacres and raids. The effects on the native population were far more devastating.

These events ultimately led to the reorganization of the colonial authorities into the Crown Commonwealth of St. Catherine, a unified colonial authority which aimed to make the colonies less susceptible to future attacks by organized native resistance. The colonies would steadily push further inland as plantation agriculture became more prominent. Flax, Cotton, Indigo, and Tobacco were the important cash crops of the plantation economy, which made these plantation owners extremely wealthy, ultimately establishing a de facto aristocracy in the colony, Planters tended to be, but were not universally of Vervillian stock who had become increasingly Rythenized over the generations. As the colonial government grew the Planters became the leading social and political class, who held antagonistic views towards the colonial governments framework and management, which they viewed as crippling towards their economic growth and expansion.

With chaos brewing in Rythene, many Planters saw an opportunity to exploit growing social and political division which had developed over the course of the last decade. Many would organize political demonstrations, aimed at polarizing The populace against Colonial Levies being sent to fight in the early stages of the Rythenean Revolution, a manufactured issue that did not exist, but had political potency. Planters would organize militias and instigate the Bexeter Revolt, the opening set piece for the Planters Rebellion, a military conflict which lasted between 1790 to 1792, Planters forces take advantage of the Rythenean monarchies weakened state and make significant gains, initially in the north, with important battles at Ithaca, Shannonsberg, and Ghyllsby opening up the south to rebelling forces. Which organized a political coalition between the Planters, small landowners, and religious radicals in order to secure a victory by the end of 1792, forcing loyalists to evacuate the newly declared country.

The Catherinese Republic Would be declared on December 8th 1792, The country's first constitutional convention would elect wealthy Planter Henri Alexander Pierre to preside over the assembly. The constitutional assembly quickly drafted the first constitution of the Catherinese Republic, this established a centralized presidential republic, the powers of the National Assembly, and the role of the Provinces and the rights that they held within the federation. Henri Pierre Would step back from political life endorsing Nathanael Bellamy, chief architect and signatory to the constitution, as president. A position he won handily.

Early Catherinese politics would be shaped primarily by differences in the realms of federalism, religion, and the power vested in the national government. This produced the First Party System, dominated by the Democratic Federalist Party and the National Republican Party. Federal Democrats believed that the central government should be kept weak, vesting more powers into the provinces to dictate political matters freely with limited oversight, this included the military, being made of of Provincial Militias, they tended to be more openly religious and saw that religion had its place in the political system, and were firmly isolationist and exposed mercantilist economic views. National Republicans deemed a centralized state as important to the cohesive function of the nation. Wishing to form central institutions and to reign in the powers of local provincial governments. They were also firmly anti-clerical, and advocated early capitalist economics.

The First Party system ended in 1823, spurred by the Great Crisis. National Republican James Tyrconnell had won the presidency and an overwhelming majority in the Assembly. His Party had previously instituted several reforms, concentrating the Provincial Militias into the National Guard, semi-centralized military force, the establishment of the National Bank, and the expansion of the federal government's trade and diplomatic powers. His presidency was controversial as it attempted to establish reforms to the constitution using his parties majority, these included alterations to the qualifications of Assemblyman, taking away the requirement for an elective officials to own land, scrapping presidential term limits, and establishing the Church Sanctuary clause, which was seen by many Federal Democrats as a concession to the growing abolitionist movement, which had become a growing factor within National Republican politics. Tyrconnell would be unable to pass these legislative goals when he was term limited, in a bitter election cycle Tyrconnell's close friend John Jay Marlborough would win the election. He would continue his predecessor's legislative agenda but with a new, but slim Federalist majority in the Assembly.

The Marlborough presidency would be mired in obstructionism as he attempted to pass the legislative agenda. Marlborough's camp attempted to use quirks within the constitution in order to pass the agenda, when word got out to Federal Democrat legislators, the Assembly led by speaker Henry de Witt instigated impeachment proceedings, which were ultimately successful. Henry de Witt would serve as interim President until an election could be organized later that year. The national Republicans would merge with the Abolitionist and Prohibition parties and form the National Whig Party during that election.

The National Whigs Would win that election, led by Quincy Elwys. In the time between the election and the assumption of seats, federal democrats orchestrated a constitutional convention, hoping to shift the political process to one they felt was more favorable to themselves. While Elwys administration attempted to fight back against this the federal democrats control of the Provinces and Judiciary meant that Elwys's Efforts failed. A new Constitution Would be written, transitioning the country from a Presidential Republic to a Parliamentary one. Martin Sanford, a Planter and Lawyer from Orangeborough Bay would be elected as the country's first Chancellor.

The Federal Democrats would reconstitute as the Federalist Party, taking in minor political forces like the Nullifiers and Anti-Militarist. This would Usher in a period were the Federalists would control the assembly, nearly uninterrupted, for 30 years between 1823 to 1857. During this time Federalist policy makers pursued a policy of territorial expansion, coming Into greater conflict with the Natives as the country pressed inland. The ultimate goal was the expansion of the agricultural industry and the acquisition of coastal lands on the Demontean to expand the flow of trtrademany wars were fought including the Aztullah War, Northwest Campaign, and the Tulmeq war, which greatly expanded the country's territorial possessions.

Industrialization, particularly in the south, led to a growing class of wage laborers who tended towards the National Whigs as their preferred political actors. The Federalist, reminded of the prior ascendance of the National Republicans decades early fought hard to keep their political power uncontested, with figures like James Augustus Claiborne, Laurent Pierre-Yauncy, and Thomas Adolphus Verdier attempting to minimize potential political opportunities. However economic struggles, growing resentment towards the Planter class, and a growth of religious abolitionism led to the victory of John A. St. Ledger in the 1857 elections. St. Ledger ran a campaign which promised the implementation of the Free Soil policy, curtailed slavery in newly conquered territories, and the formation of a strong central government. His election would institute the 1857 Crisis, where many northern Provinces which were strongholds of the Federalist refused to recognize the results of the election, nullifying Electoral rolls and preventing Whigs from assuming local elected offices under charges of treason. This came to a flash point in April of that year when militia Forces under the command of Sullivan G. Caunteton rebelled against National efforts to bring the Provincial Militias into the standing of a national army. This occurred at Fort Massten, roughly 75 miles north of the nation's capital of Ithaca. This rebellion prompted the Dissolution Crisis, where several northern Provinces used dubious legal precedent to dissolve their membership in the Republic. These Provinces would quickly converge in Bexeter to establish the Commonwealth of Fremonte, electing James Augustus Claiborne as the new nations Secretary General. The Battle of Fort Massten by National Guard forces would ignite the civil war, with most of the Commonwealth's army under the command of General Penance Zyller, who would march south, taking the important rail and road junction at Mallory Ridge and establishing fighting lines along the Druineach River. Initially caught flat footed, the republic would take steps to remake the army, establishing the New Continental Army, political infight within the Commonwealth's army aided greatly on later success by the republic, a blockade Would be imposed on the Commonwealth, James Abraham Sutton would Command the overall army, and would institute a strategy he dubbed “chip and shatter” to break the commonwealths defenses. In 1862 Sutton's Tidewater campaign would batter Commonwealth forces commanded by General Fairclough Diezsler Houellebecq, taking the important port city of Orangeborough Bay and marching on Bexeter, which was surrounded and besieged. 3 months later Houellebecq and Claiborne would sign conditions of surrender, ending the civil war. St. Ledger would serve until 1868, overseeing the Reconstitution of the North.

Afterward the Whigs Would become the dominant political force within the country, between 1857 and 1893 they would rule with only minor interruptions. The Federalist became a party mostly concerned with agrarian and economic nationalist politics, while the whigs were split between two factions, Labor Whigs who embodied the political desires of the growing Working class, immigrants, and the urban middle class, while True Whigs tended to align themselves more deeply with the business class and urban elites. A period of time between 1893 and 1933 saw frequent changes of power between the Whigs and Federalists, however political and economic conditions saw the growth of new political forces, this period also saw the outbreak of the 1st Great War, which saw the nation remain neutral. In 1933 a great political upheaval shocked the country. The Farmer-Labor Coalition, a Unionist, Socialist, and Populist Political party won a majority, forming a coalition amongst voters who had previously been supporters of the Labor Whigs, Agricultural Laborers, and Idico-Catherinese voters. Its assumption of power nearly obliterated the Federalists electorally, and greatly weakened the Whigs. Ames Easterling, an industrial trade unionist, would assume the Chancellery. His political agenda sought to destroy the growing monopolizing of key industries, curtailed corporate influence on politics, and nationalize key industries like Steel and Coal in order to establish a welfare system in the country. His policies were greatly opposed, especially by the Whigs. As it became clear that Easterling's electoral majority was insurmountable, members of the country's industrial and finance elite established a plot to oust Easterling. They utilized old veteran societies, mostly men who had fought in more recent native wars, to act as the Vanguard of their coup, as the societies themselves were hives for conservative politics in the country.

On June 8th 1935 the plot would be executed with hundreds of armed veterans marching into Ithaca, they took control of key government facilities and forced the government to flee towards Bexeter, the remaining assemblymen, all Whigs, would elect Thomas Evelyn Chelmsey as Chancellor. The next day, confusion rocked the country. Elements of the Catherinese Marine Corps under the leadership of Brigadier Quincy Prescott du Plessis would muster his forces from Orangeborough Bay and march on Ithaca, a small battle would take place, 4 days after his assumption of the Chancellery Chelmsey Would be deposed, and du Plessis would assume active control of the government after a series of negotiations with the government in Bexeter. Du Plessis would try and execute most of the platters, but Chelmsey would escape, his whereabouts unknown. elections would be held in early 1935, with the Farmer-Labor Coalition winning with an increased majority.

Calvin Stalman would be elected Chancellor, and his administration would see most of the Easterling agenda passed into law, nationalizing key industries, establishing the national health care system, and breaking up large monopolies. His administration also entered The Second Great War, fearing that Songha control of the open ocean would negatively affect the country's export oriented economy. Catherinese ships would help augment Coalition capabilities in the Demontean and the Rum Gulf, while Catherinese Marines would take part in a few battles.

The Farmer-Labor Coalition would be the primary political force in the country afterwards. The Federalist disbanding in the 50's and the remnant Whigs reforming into the National Republicans. The National Republicans would wrestle control of the Chancellery from the coalition in 1976 after an economic recession pummeled the country, they would institute key neoliberalism reforms throught the 70s and 80s. Since the 1990s the country has seen a consistent change in democratic leadership, the 2010s bore the emergence of the Fourth Party system as the National Republicans liberalized their platform, ultimately joining with smaller parties to form the Reform Party, the new National Liberal Party emerged as a strong third party which took over the countries right wing politics, and the Farmer-Labor Coalition attempted to distance itself from the dominant third way faction that had controlled the party in the 90s and 00s.

Economic Overview: the Catherinese Republic is still majorly dependent on heavy industry for the bulk of its economic output, with Steel, Coal, and Natural Gas exports making up a major component of its economy. It still operates a generally export focused economic model, where nationalized companies produce a major swath of its export value. Since the 80s this has diminished and now private enterprise constitutes the majority of the nation's economic production. Since the mid 2000s the country has seen a major growth in its information technology industry centered around the Demontean coast; agricultural exports like Wheat, Corn, Soybeans, and Rice are also key aspects of the economy. The nation's GDP (PPP) stands at $1.69 Trillion with a GDP Per Capita of around $39,000.

Geopolitics: The Catherinese Republic tends to hold a policy of open diplomacy with other nations, however its strongest Geopolitical allies tend to be members of the Invisible Empire, and tend to attempt close relations with fellow Rum Gulf states. Its main concerns geopolitically remain free navigation, championing if liberal democracy, and the growth Of unhindered global trade.

Basic Information

Nation Name (Official): The Kingdom of Barcia
Nation Name (Common): Barcia
Capital City: Tradare
Requested Location: Occ14 https://i.imgur.com/v8sL4tZ.png
Requested Population: 34 million
Government Type: Unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy

Cultural Overview:
  • Ethnicity and Language: North Italian (Milanese Lombard being the national language) small Greek minority on south-eastern coast
  • Religion: Apostolic Perendism
Historical Overview:Barcia traces it's origins back to the Sabarine Empire and was once one of the most important provinces economically and politically. Originally home to many of the rival tribes to Sabaria, the region was quickly conquered and Sabarized. Over time the regions importance grew as trade from northern Auressia flowed into the province. In the Camerella period however, the region came under the increasing influence of strongmen generals rather than the emperor. As the second empire rose, the region began to fracture as the power of the regions governors collapsed. This was until the Ludovite conquest in 1037 which brought with it a new ruling Ludovite dynasty from northern Auressia, who brought with them many more Germanic influences to the region, planting the seeds of the modern Barcian Identity. Owing to the power of these new rulers, the emperor was forced to grant the title of Grand Duke of Barcia in 1094. The Ludovites continued to rule Barcia from 1142 to 1314 when it was succeeded by the Valseriati dynasty. Under the Valseriati the Duchy's power and influence in the Sabarine Empire grew leading to considerable tension with the hereditary emperorship. Such tensions directly led to the 4th war of the eagles in 1411 wherein Barcia played a major role in the implementation of the elective monarchy, with the Valseriati dominating elections for large portions of this period, leading Barcia to it's zenith of political and economic power benefiting from it's imperial influence and rising global trade network.

Over time however this influence wained as republican revolution burned across the empire leading to the effective dissolution of the empire and the rise of the Occidental Confederacy. Following this Barcia would be proclaimed a kingdom, though have it's own short lived republican uprising which would be swiftly crushed and the monarchy restored.

During the first great war Barcia sided with the Galene league as with much of the Confederacy, though fighting remained largely outside of the country's borders.

Prior to the second great war however, Barcia underwent a period of political instability, promulgated by the rise of Lanzist Palia, disrupting Barcian influence of the Occidental Confederation as well as the regency for the underage King. Under the regency Barcia would side with Palia declaring itself a repuvlic though the coalition aligned Barcian resistance would seek to restore the monarchy and quash the new illegitimate Third Empire.

In the aftermath of the second great war Barcia was devastated leading to the rise of a populist conservative government which largely continues to define Barcian political identity to this day.

Economic Overview: Barcia Is a wealthy nation and a major trade and banking hub for occidental Auressia. The capital is a major financial hub with the country being particularly known for it's banking sector which traces it's origins back to the medieval period. Other large sectors include service industries, wine, high-tech manufacturing as well as pharmaceuticals, designer fashion and cosmetics.

Geopolitics: Today Barcia remains a major player within the Occidental Confederacy through which it is able to wield considerable sway within international relations. Barcia maintains friendly relations with it's neighbours through political cooperation and trading relationships. The country's military is of moderate size and is primarily utilised to defend the country's borders/waters as well as wider Occidental foreign policy aims.

Why did you choose to apply for this concept?: This type of nation/culture is comfortable for me given my existing history in building Midrasia and I hope to delve into a lot of medieval/early modern diplomacy with it. I am also very interested in fleshing out the history of the Sabarine Empire and it's successor states which I feel I can play a major role in through this concept.
