Okay so basically (this is my belief I may be wrong) all of the buttons on the home page are images that are being displayed by bb code image hosting. This website does use html and stuff like that for linking between pages and all the other UI. The UX however uses bb code to format the pages and make it look a pretty. Your browser or device seems to have a problem with bb code and because of that you aren't getting any displays, buttons or side bars

When i hit any of those links it takes me straight back to the 'create a nation' page

If you can't upgrade past 5.1.1, you're using an original iPad. You can try a different browser, but ultimately, there's not going to be developer support for an operating system that went out of support 10 years ago.

If you can upgrade your iOS, you're either running an iPad 2 or 3 and should be able to upgrade to iOS 9.3.6 and see if it resolves your issue.

Ouch, this is an original iPad. Ive had it for seven years but never thought it was that old. It still works pretty good with most things, though it is a little bit slow at times.
