About :: The AOlympic Games: Winter Festival is a competition between Nations of the Atlantian Oceania Region. The AOlympic Games were first held as an experimental campaign alongside AOCAF 61 featuring 3 sports, and most recently in the AOlympic Games: Team Challenge alongside AOCAF 64. The AOlympic Games: Winter Festival will consist of an array of several individual and team sports each awarding Gold/Silver/Bronze medals to nations based on their placement in the event and an overall medals table.

RP Considerations :: Individual events such as the various skiing and skating disciplines will be divided into mens and womens events. For each event, a nation will enter ONE athlete or team of athletes. Team sports, as well as dog sledding and snowmobiling are assumed co-ed / gender neutral and eligible participants for each team entered will simply follow the eligibility standards of their respective National Federations.

RP Cutoffs :: The AOlympic Games Team Challenge will run slightly offset from the AOCAF Competition. Nations can earn bonus for all contributions to the AOCAF/AOlympic RP Threads. RP Bonus will be shared in some form across all competitions. As the various Winter Festival sports will be scorinated by 3 different users, RP cutoff times will likely vary with those users' availability. We will do our best to communicate those times and dates clearly. RP cutoffs for events hosted in Squornshelan Remnant States will occur between 11pm and 12am EDT. RP cutoffs for events hosted in Busoga Islands will occur between 10pm and 12am EDT.

AOlympics Winter Challenge: IC Info

Postby Squornshelan Remnant States » Thu Mar 24, 2022 2:06 pm

Welcome to Han Dold City, gateway to the north of the SRS!

A modest city of some 300,000 inhabitants, Han Dold City is found in its eponymous state of Han Dold. The smallest by area of the Confederacy’s eight constituent states, Han Dold is located in the north-central Confederacy, with western Megabrantis to its south, East Flania to its north, and Aboveland and the sea to its East. Both the state and City of Han Dold are oriented around the Han River, which flows down from the highlands, through the center of the city, and empties into the long ocean inlet that separates Aboveland from the main part of Squornshelous.
Ecotourism is the largest economic sector in the region, as the natural landscape of Han Dold is relatively unspoiled. In summer, visitors come to enjoy hiking, zipline, and whitewater tours in the beautiful scenery of the Keuka Mountains, upriver and inland from the City. These modest peaks are the erosion-resistant remnants of an uplifted plateau, and are geologically unrelated to the higher mountains of the North Reach range that stretch across East and West Flania further to the North. The result is that the river has carved a spectacular series of gorges and canyons, along which some of the best hiking trails in the region can be found.
The Han River Gorge in winter
When the snows start to arrive in late autumn the numerous ski resorts in the region fire up the chairlifts and open their gates once again to guests from all across Atlantian Oceania. Some of these resorts will play host to the skiing competitions for the Winter Festival.
Greenstone Mountain Resort
The city was a center of textile production during the Industrial Revolution, harnessing the power of the river to drive mechanical spindles and looms, but that industry has become a shadow of its former self, with many old mill buildings falling into disrepair, or being repurposed as offices and living spaces. One sector of the economy that has not declined at all over the years though is the importance of the city as a transshipment hub. With sea ice making the ports of Traal and Zarss inaccessible for half the year or more, everything that sustains the far north must come either overland or by air. The Han River, only navigable as far as the city, is the nearest that shipping can come, and so Han Dold City still serves as a vitally important port and trucking center.
Preserved textile mill buildings and canal in Han Dold City
Culturally speaking, visitors will find that Han Dold City is a city in the process of reinventing its identity. A downtown where one could once find entire blocks of vacant buildings is undergoing a steady transformation into an entertainment and dining district, drawing a growing stream of people back from the suburbs and outlying towns to the city center. The presence of the Eastworth Institute of the Arts on the edge of downtown certainly helps, as the presence of talented young artists, musicians, and actors means there is always some manner of cultural event to take in, and you will seldom find a more talented karaoke bar crowd than here. Such an eclectic blend of young professionals and artists supports a thriving restaurant, brewery, and distillery scene centered on the riverfront, its parks and historic sites. There, modern haute cuisine establishments rubbing shoulders with more casual eateries and bars.
The modern Han Dold City Riverfront

Venues:
Alpine and Freestyle Skiing, and Ski Jumping:
Greenstone Mountain Resort - The furthest flung venue from the city, even Greenstone mountain is barely more than an hour by road from the city. It is the largest ski resort in the immediate area, with just shy of 300 miles of trails, several of which have been set aside for the Winter Challenge’s various events. The remainder of the resort will remain open to the public for skiing during the festival though.

Nordic Skiing:
Mirror Valley - Named for the deep, glacial lake that lies between two long, low ridges, the town of Mirror Valley is located just half an hour from Han Dold City. The smoothly rolling terrain provides gentle slopes for the cross-country skiing course, and for hiking and biking in summer. Mirror Valley is also the epicenter of Han Dold’s wine culture, with rieslings a particular specialty.

Luge and Bobsled:
Oneonta Sliding Center - Originally built almost a century ago, the sliding course at Oneonta received an extensive makeover in preparation for the Winter Challenge, with improved guest and athlete amenities, and expanded viewing areas.

Snowmobiling:
Ralph Wilson Memorial Stadium - The home venue of Han Dold City Football Club has been transformed into a tightly coiled, highly technical snocross course. The compact nature of the raceway means there are few extended straightaways and no opportunities for massive jumps. Instead, the event will favor drivers who can consistently keep their cornering clean and choose the right moment to attack.

Dog Sledding:
Various, specifics TBA - The dog sledding race will range far afield across the state of Han Dold, and over the border into East Flania to the North.

OOC RP Considerations: Han Dold is inspired by upstate, particularly western New York. I derive personal names for people of Han ethnicity from modern and archaic celtic languages, but that trend does not continue in place names, which are mainly derived from real world upstate New York toponyms. Well known people of Han ethnicity include SRS national team footballers Caitrin Ness and Damnagoras.

Busoga Islands National Information

Image

The Islamic Republic of the Busoga Islands are one of the newerstates on the Atlantian Oceania map - the country forming as an independent nation shortly after World Cup 80, as a result of what is commonly known internationally as the Banijan-Equestrian War, but within the country as the Busogan war for independence. They are located on the northwestern edge of the Shango-Fogoa Basin. It has a population of about 12 million people.

Despite being titled an Islamic Republic, the nature of the state, and its culture, are rather secular in practice. The title is more as a reflection of its independence due to its independence from the Mormon dominated state of Banija.

The islands have been inhabitated for over 400 years, named after their founder, Ayatollah Kizil Busoga. These people have been one that have fiercely and jealously their independence. While, of course, being ruled by Quebec City, and then via Busukuma, for over two entire centuries, they are now looking to come out of the woodworks and stake a name for themselves. Politically, they closely ally with the Equestrian States and other nations within Canterlot's sphere of influence, and thanks to heavy foreign investment they have a rapidly growing economy.

Due to their long history as an integral part of Banija, much of their sporting infrastructure is tied to Banija's. Busogan club teams in all sorts of sports compete in Banijan leagues, and Busogan colleges & universities compete in Banijan competition as well.

Lakiska, South Island

Located on the South Coast of the South Island, Lakiska is the long-time Busoga Islander capitol. It has a population of 425,000, making it the second largest city in the country. This city has one of the country's two international airports, the other one being in Dukuma. The city has two venues that will be used to host matches during Phase 2 of the AOCAFs.

Caracat Ice Arena

This is the on-campus ice arena of the largest university in the country, the Islamic University of Busoga. It has a capacity of 11,000, and it will be used to host all the figure skating events at the AOlympics.

Dukuma, North Island

This is the largest city in the Busoga Islands, with the population just a hair over one million. The hometown of the country's President, it is a very modern, walkable city, known to have an extremely progressive culture. The AOlympics hockey tournament will be held across the North Island- with two arenas being used in Dukuma, and two more being used elsewhere on the North Island.

Dukuma Municipal Arena- Capacity of 9,392. Hosting Group A, a semifinal, and the final for the AOHC. Also the host of the entire curling competition.

The Frozen Edge- Capacity of 6,392. Hosting Group B, a semifinal, and the bronze medal game. Also the host of all speed skating competitions.

Akman Ice Arena Capacity of 5,020. Located in Tezirbu, North Island, which is on the very southern tip of the North Island. It is both the port for ferry crossings, and where the bridge is that connects the two islands. Hosting Group C, and two quarterfinals.

The Beehive. Capacity of 4,480. Located in Tripoli, North Island, which is on the northern half of the island. Hosting Group D, and two quarterfinals.

National Ice Hockey Team

Of all the Cordian teams, this is probably the best relative to their competition. Coming off a quarterfinals run in the last World Cup of Hockey that featured Cinderella fratricide against Le Choix, followed by an unlikely win in a massive snowstorm against hosts Quebec and Shingoryeo, the North Stars lost a close game to Siovanija and Teusland to close out their run. That's not even mentioning their incredible finish in the group stage; victories in the last four games, including a 2-0 win over Cassadaigua, coupled with Chromatik losses in each of that nation's last four, put the Cordians into the play-ins. So while this team is pretty good, they've also been very fortunate. We'll see if they can pull off another magical run in the AOHC.

Coach: Kress "Terrible" Thomassen, 47
A former CIHL player herself, Thomassen won the league championship on three occasions in the pre-internationalization era with the Danvirk Wall.

ROSTER:

First Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Justin Perreau
Age: 25
Team: Lakeside Warriors
A speedy left wing who can shoot and pass with precision, Perreau is consistently Lakeside's top scorer.

Center - Eric Eaton
Age: 30
Team: Creston Northmen
Captain
Eaton stands out even on the best offense in the league as its top contributor in points and second in goals.

Right Wing - Harald Ericsen
Age: 27
Team: Cordasfjord Crusaders
Known for his netfront battling, Ericsen's screens are notoriously good and the defense invariably scores more goals when he's on the ice.

Second Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Jennifer Vosun
Age: 24
Team: East Fjord HC
Vosun is a force on both offense and defense for East Fjord , blocking a lot of shots every game and cutting down shooting angles very effectively. Her two-way ability has secured her a spot on the first line of both penalty kills.

Center - Randolf Karlsson
Age: 25
Team: Gilded City Golden
Karlsson can do two things: win faceoffs and fire massive shots. Luckily, he's very good at those two things.

Right Wing - Rurik Dirsson
Age: 25
Team: Cordasfjord Crusaders
Dirsson is usually one of the league's best playmakers, and it's a great help to his Crusaders, a top-division CIHL team.

Third Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Magnus Bjornsen
Age: 22
Team: Kersson College
Bjornsen is an incredibly skilled player who just graduated from Kersson College, not having signed yet with any team

Center - Martin Kordsen
Age: 21
Team: North Bay Lightning
Easily the best younger player in the Isles, and with perhaps the best skating skills at all levels, Kordsen signed with the Lightning right off his 18U local team, where he was dominating. Now the best player on the Lightning, Kordsen led the team to a AAA Division promotion last season.

Right Wing - Signy MacLeod
Age: 22
Team: Jutland Riveters
MacLeod was the best playmaker in the college league last season, and has been referred to as JU's "quarterback" because she pretty much runs offensive zone play.

Fourth Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Bergonund Olafsen
Age: 27
Team: White River Eagles
Olafsen is a grinder, and his line has the best forecheck on the team, largely thanks to his determination in battles, and his size. See Olafsen coming in behind you and you'll cough up the puck like the skinny kid coughing up his lunch money.

Center - Will Egilsen
Age: 28
Team: Thor's Rest Thunder
Alternate Captain
Egilsen spends most of his time in the offensive zone, not because he creates offense, but because the forechecks he runs are spot-on.

Right Wing - Tryggve Eriksson
Age: 26
Team: Jutland Whalers
Eriksson is at his best battling in the corners; he rarely comes out without the puck.

Defense - Pair 1
Halfdan and Ivar Leifssen
Age: 26
Team: Jutland Riveters
These twins are both over six feet tall and they have the hardest shots in the league. They're major offensive contributors for the Riveters because of their shots, which are dangerous from nearly anywhere.

Defense - Pair 2
Eric Walker
Age: 29
Team: East Fjord HC
Alternate Captain
Walker plays very well in Cordia's man-on-man scheme and is not afraid to play physically. The biggest hits in the game often come from him.

Freydis Svensen
Age: 27
Team: Lakeside Warriors
Svensen excels at every method of shot prevention: blocking, lifting the stick, contesting the puck, and so on. When she marks a player, they rarely score.

Defense - Pair 3
Haakon Haraldsen
Age: 20
Team: Kersson College
Haraldsen's shutdown defense in the college league has turned Kersson into a force to be reckoned with this past season.

Svein Svensson
Age: 21
Team: Mountainview Typhoon
Don't laugh at his name, or you'll find yourself on the ice, with him laughing at you. Svensson is the most physical player on the ice despite being one of the youngest.

Goaltenders
Absent exceptional play, Ericsson will play two games to Smith's one.

Starter - Chris Ericsson
Age: 25
Team: Valley Fold Vengeance
Was critical to the Cordians' incredible quarterfinals run in the last World Cup of Hockey, which featured six wins in a row - of which Ericsson played five.

Backup - Olaf Smith
Age: 27
Team: Jutland Whalers
Smith always comes up big in big games and is one of the most consistent goaltenders in the CIHL.

SYSTEMS:

OOC: These are more guidelines than rules, but if you ever want to talk about systems and how you plan to counter them, here they are.
Forecheck: ABC sounded dumb last time. We'll just call it the Cordian forecheck this time around. Much less elementary. One player pressures opposing defensemen while other players cover all other players so that the other team is left with no options.
Image

Even Strength Defensive Zone: Below the tops of the circles is man-on-man play; above them is zone play. Important: If an opposing player moves from above to below or vice-versa, coverage changes.
Image

Breakout: Pull-system breakout, used to create either defensive panic or a 1-on-0 advantage. The weakside winger begins skating as soon as they see puck possession is theirs; strongside wing and center set up in typical breakout procedure, with the added option of a speeding weakside winger.
Image

Powerplay: The 1-3-1. The idea is to get either a shot from the slot, a cross-ice pass for a shot, or a shot for a rebound and a scramble in front of the net.
Powerplay Unit 1: Perreau-Karlsson-Ericsen Leifssen-Leifssen
Powerplay Unit 2: Bjornsen-Eaton-Dirsson Walker-Svensen
Image

4-man Penalty Kill: Box or Diamond, depending on the opposing powerplay system. The idea is to not overcommit so as to not allow shots from the inside; shots from the outside are unavoidable.
Penalty Kill Unit 1: Vosun-Egilsen H. Leifssen-Svensen
Penalty Kill Unit 2: Perreau-Ericsen Walker-Haraldsen
Image

3-man Penalty Kill: Triangle or Right Triangle, depending on opposing powerplay system. In a Right Triangle, rather than the point player moving back and forth during perimeter passing, the entire formation rotates, with the opposite defensemen instead moving up, the same-side defenseman moving over, and the point player moving back.
3-man PK Unit 1: Vosun Svensen-I. Leifssen
3-man PK Unit 2: Ericsen Walker-Haraldsen

Hockey in Cordia is on par with football (soccer) in popularity. With a robust college and youth system, players often don't enter the league until they reach 22, with a few exceptional cases. The national league is the Cordian Isles Hockey League. The reigning league champions are the Jutland Riveters, with the Jutland Whalers the championship finalists and regular-season champions. Cordian hockey as coached by Kress "Terrible" Thomassen is exceptionally aggressive, trading defensive mistakes for offensive chances, relying on a strong forecheck to keep the puck out of their own zone. Players are expected to play a physical game; expect hits, but mostly to make the play. Petty penalties may happen, especially in rough losses. Oh, and you'll hear plenty of trash talk on the ice. A true Cordian talks a good game. Even inside their own zone, Cordian forwards will cheat up at the first sign of possession, a risky move that leaves men on both teams open and can work either way. As a result, the WCoH Federation rates Cordia's playstyle a +3.5.

┤ COACHING STAFF ├
\
Head Coach: ISHII Hakoda
Height: 193cm – Weight: 93kg – Age 46 years old – Team: University of Adirolf, Head Coach

The leader in Caps, Goals, and Assists for the National Team, Ishii Hakoda was selected to lead the Ice Bisons out of The Silence and into the new era! While he has not yet to manage to capture the same magic as the venerable Kad Skirata had when the Ice Bisons first ever showed up on the Multi-Verse Stage, Ishii continues to hold the confidence of the National Sports Council. After a successful Third Place campaign in World Cup XL, the Ice Bisons have continued to advance out of the Group Stage in every edition since; including the first feather in the cap of Wong Haru, the Champions of World Cup of Hockey XLIV

Assistant Coach: Ito Pakku
Forward Coach: IKEDA Kuruk
Defense Coach: KO Piandao
Goalie Coach: SHU Huanguo

Head Medical Officer: Doctor FONG Wuchin
Height: 186cm – Weight: 84kg – Age 52 years old

A graduate of the pristine Royal Academy of Medicine in Imperial City, Fong Wuchin enters his sixth campaign as the Head Medical Officer for the Ice Bisons. Having earned multiple degrees in Sports Medicine, General Surgery, Kinesiology, as well as holding two Traditional Medicine Certifications, 'The Tin Doc' as he is loving referred to as is more than capable of addressing any and all health concerns that can arise with a team as culturally diverse as the Ice Bisons. Much like most doctors for the National Teams, Fong served before college in the Republic Defence Focre; specifically in the Republic Navy as a Corpsman. After his mandatory service, Fong entered in college before earning his intial medical degree from the RAoM; afterwhich, he would accept a commission into the Navy where he would work his way up to the Head of Medicine at the Republic Naval Academy based in Yu Dao. Currently holding the rank of Commodore, Fong oversees much of the education appointments within the Republic Naval services, as well as conducting leading research in the areas of Sports Medicine and how it can be applied on the field.

Security Chief: First Lieutenant BEVIIN (CL-23-0192)
Height: 180cm – Weight: 84kg – Age: 18 years old CHRONOLOGICAL (28 years old BIOLOGICAL)

Given the occurrence of Atlantian Oceania's regional tournaments for both football and gridiron - both of which Gyatso-kai as sent delegations - at the same time as the World Cup of Hockey, the usual assignment of Captain Akaan and his detachment of 'Security Assistants' was not available to Head Coach Ishii and the Ice Bisons. Instead, First Lieutenant CL-23-0192 of the Besh Company within the First Avatarian Guard was assigned by The Avatar to oversee security for the Ice Bisons as they travel to the Anaia Region for the first time since the Foxchester Declaration.

A younger trooper than Akaan, CL-23-0192 (known as 'Beviin') is what is called a "standard trooper', in that his armor and training is not as specialised as that which Akaan -- being a Commando -- received. His personality is also a bit less 'militarised'; this leads to a bit more 'personal approach' to the job, which Beviin took with delight whereas Akaan often looks to the security detail jobs as "calm" and "boring". Nonetheless, should any issue arise that Beviin feels uncomfortable, Akaan will be but a comline away for advice.

DEF 77 HED Torvik 30 L Univ. of the Northern Tribes Itakawai Lighting
OFF 87 KOBUSHI Kaede 32 L Royal Earth Univ – Dongjiang Omashu Badgermoles
OFF 21 HOSAKA Severi 24 R Drotenfao College Gaoling Bears
OFF 49 SONG Unataq (C) 36 R University of Adirolf Gaoling Bears

After making his debut in WCoH XL, Shu Pianhuo returns to his place between the pipes for the sixth straight tournament; jumping over the two perennial backups for the National Team – Ming Zhanshi and Dang Mun-Hee – and securing his place in net. A younger goalie, who managed to win his first Kuruk Cup within his first three seasons at Omashu. Shu has proven his family proud, developing into a fine starting goalie whose style continues to evolve over time.

The defensive pair for the first line remains the same since WCoH XLI, with Omashu-fan-favorite Watang Kouji paired with Hed Torvik of Itakawai fame. A defensive line with over 200 kilos is somewhat of an Avatarian tradition, where speed is often sacrificed for power, though even for their size, Avatarian hockey players tend to be faster than one would expect. Watang, out of the Fire Nation, is known for powerful forechecks and his insane speed on the backskate; while Hed, otherwise known as the “Mandalorian Shield”, is just as impressive at generating offence as he is pushing another player into the boards.

The forward line, albeit a bit old, is anchored by the youthful Hosaka Severi, who started on the second line before his promotion to the first; with his blinding speed on the ice, Hosaka has been a great asset for assisting on the wings and driving offense with the Avatarian standard of dump and play. Kobushi Kaede, an impressive left-winger from Omashu – has continued to hold down his end of the line, shifting more to the defensive side with the recent changes in style. Song Unataq, who has always been more defensively-minded, continues the trend of the line to be more interested in keeping puck possession and breaking up offensive rushes through size and determination. While Song stated in many an interview before World Cup XLIV that he would be retiring from multiverse play, scoring the tournament-winning goal and bringing home the World Cup rejuvenated the Elder Song, and he decided to return for chance of a repeat.

Consider the AOHC his warm-up.

OFF 86 Nestori HUAN 31 R Ba Sing Se Univ. Shu Jing Dragons
OFF 19 CHEUNG Sepi 30 L Saigon City College Kelita Riverhounds

With Hiteki Kia having over a century of caps on the Ice Bisons under his belt, he is the most seasoned player on the team, and rightfully wears the first A. With age and skill, Hiteki is renowned for his ability as "damage control" through the last four World Cups he played in. Having changed up his usual pairing from Hed Torvik to Ero’ki Nacer, the young right defensemen from Hatsu University and second year Badgermole finds himself yet again beneath the wings of “Sifu Hiteki” as many of the younger players respectfully refer to him as such. Nacer, who graduated right out of Hatsu University to sign an entry-level contract with the Badgermoles, found his number being called in the final games of the 2020.2 Regular Season, when last season’s first pick Hu Jiaozi was taken out of the season with a bad trip that saw him slide skate-first into the boards and break his tibia in two places. With an impressive season in the Republic Hockey League underway with the Humoki Huangdogs, he made the transition to AHL-level play with ease, and scored his first AHL goal against the Itakawai Lightning in Game One of the Finals.

On offense, Wang Torsti from Si Wong finds himself on the left side of the ice, after a renewed contract with Si Wong has been paying off for him. Opposite him we find Cheung Sepi who has continued to carve his name in the banks of the Kelita River. Even though he has been moved from the first line, Cheung is not taking it as an insult, and instead, viewing it as a chance to sharpen his own skills on the off-handed plays. In the middle, another once-first-liner Nestori Huan finds his return to the line better known for damage control rather than scoring. However, with his impressive knowledge and vision that had earned him his spot on the first line last World Cup, Huan may very well prove his doubters wrong and bring some glory to the second line… or find himself fading into obscurity…

OFF 33 SOUMA Shichiro 29 R Yokoua State Uni. Senlin Archers
OFF 17 KIL’OR Alecyc 27 L University of Kom’rk Itakawai Lighting

With the retirement of Kuang Deniigi after the AOlympics, the young Degour Niyan has been called up from the reserves to take his place. A scrappy young Mandalorian from the eastern reaches, Degour is incredibly volatile and prone to egging his opponents on to get into their heads. Pairing him with Ki’an Losow gives the youthful inexperience a master’s overwatch. Though, as Losow has been fond of saying, it is only a matter of time before he himself is no longer fit for the fight. Expected replacements on the third line are both Sons of the Earth; Mancole Kaleb of Ba Sing Se, and Bar’cay Godorow of Itakawai… which has led many to wonder if the third line is going to be full of Itakawai players.

Offensively, the third line is filled with strong passers and even stronger shooters. Both Relicyc Tho-An and Souma Shichiro have done amazingly well in skills competitions involving accuracy and shot speeds; both players are younger and wanting to make a name for themselves. However, what is unique on the third line is the arrival of Kil’or Alecyc, an impressive power forward who saw his name behind many a goals in both previous tournaments as well as strong postseason play for the Lightning. Given the emphasis that Coach Ishii has put on slotting Badgermole players into prime spots the last two campaigns, someone like Kil’or – a second-line Lightning player who has been with the team since their return – was bound to find himself in the lower lines. However, ever the professional, Kil’or has enjoyed playing with Relicyc, a teammate and good friend of his in Itakawai, and the two of them have been working with Souma to fully connect the offense on the third line… Do not be surprised if you start seeing goals being made from this far back in the depth charth.

Image:: CURLING::

The first foray of the Avatarian Republics into the sport of Curling will take place during this Winter Festival. While not a popular sport by any stretch of the imagination in Gyatso-kai, Curling enjoys a modest following of amateur and collegiate players specifically in the northern most reaches of the Republics.

Head Coach: Arnook KANEQKUIK (47, M – Kowma, Santiikee)
Assistant Coach:[/b] ISHIDA Saumikia (42, F – Oyaji, Kyoshi Island)

Third: Freyjia GUDRNSDOTTIRImage (24, F – Nordr Aros, Arendalle)
Alternate: BAO Bergljot (23, F – Republic City )

::AOWC: DOG SLEDDING::

Dog Sledding is another niche sport in Gyatso-kai; given the diverse wildlife that exists in the Avatarian Republics, there are quite a few species of animals who are much more capable of pulling heavy sleds across any number of terrains. Though, the sled dog racing circuit in Gyatso-kai is almost exclusively limited to the two northern provinces of Kiwatik and Olankur; one of northern Earth and one of Mandalore. These races are usually held in the later winter months (late January to mid March) when weather in these provinces hovers under 10 degrees Celsius, and snow is hardpacked into the ground.

  • Sappak (4, M, 40kg – Greenland Dog, Avatarian subbreed)
  • Kisak (5, M, 37kg – Greenland Dog , Avatarian subbreed)

::AOWC: SNOWMOBILE RACING::

Another niche sport that mostly finds its audience in the ‘Extreme Sport’ world, Snowmobile Racing is often a way for motocross riders to train in the winter months, as well as a way for mountain kids who live in snow most the year to have an outlet that is less likely to see them become a hashtag.

AOlympic Winter Festival: SRS Opening Ceremony

Postby AOlympics » Tue Mar 29, 2022 9:00 pm

Friends and neighbors from around Atlantian Oceania, guys and gals and nonbinary pals, athletes and spectators alike, welcome to Ralph Wilson Memorial stadium here in beautiful Han Dold City in the Squornshelan Confederacy. In mere moments the opening ceremony will begin to inaugurate this Winter Festival.

Now the stadium lights dim, and a loud cheer from the assembled crowd, lively in spite of the cold this evening. The cheers fade into an expectant hush. A waiting silence. Finally, silence is broken by the pure, floating tones of a flute. A spotlight illuminates a single ice skater, draped in a dress as white as the ice she glides across. The music builds, flowing with her movements, and soon just as the rest of the orchestra joins the lone flute, other skaters join our heroine, also clad in white.

Like spindrift, they flit back and forth across the sheet of ice, encountering various scenes that are suddenly illuminated, telling the history of Han Dold. Houses built of branches and bark, warmed by wood fires. Canoes paddling and rafts poling up and down the river. Logs cut from the forests and stones from the hillside and built into sturdy homes. A mill along a narrow stream, harnessing for the first time the power of moving water. Paddle-wheeled steamships, heavy laden with cloth pulling up to dockyards lined with long rows of brick warehouses. Millenia pass by before our eyes in a few brief minutes.

A new skater appears, his outfit blaring in the blood-red and black of the Imperium. Our heroine is undeterred, a hand extended in friendship, and a bit of wardrobe wizardry and now he too is clad in the same spotless white as the throng that now accompanies her. Many others now join, shedding their colors of nationalist fervor, and the skaters move, like a marching band, forming recognizable shapes. A skier bent forward over a steep slope. Two helmeted heads emerging from a sled. A racing figure holding a hockey stick, which shimmers, shifts and becomes a sweeping broom. A sledge pulled by a dog. A most excellent doggo. A very good boi. A heckin fluffy chonker. Oh, excuse me, where was I?

Oh yes, the skaters form icons representing the many sports of the Winter Festival. Some will be contested far from here, in the glorious southwest of Atlantian Oceania, those events which can be contested indoors will take place in the Busoga Islands. Here in the Northeast of the region though, where winter is actually to be found, the outdoor events will be held. The music builds to a climax, and the skaters, spinning in unison in the shape of a snowflake, strike their final pose. From the corner of the stadium, processing around its perimeter, the delegations of athletes for the outdoor events begin to appear in the ceremonial parade of nations, led by Aboveland, and concluding with the hosts. Some groups are large, with athletes for each event to be held here, like those of Vilita and Turori, Valanora, Geisenfried, and Aboveland. Others are much smaller, like the one-person parade from Sarzonia, consisting of a single snowmobile racer (the remainder of that nations delegation slated to compete in the Busoga Islands).

With the parade of nations ending with the entry of the host delegation, many of whom hail from the state of Han Dold, the opening ceremonies came to an end, and the AOlympic torch was lit, officially opening the games. Now to follow, two weeks of spirited competition, and may the best win!

OOC Roster Note: In the interests of fairness to those not yet able to roster, and for the sake of mine and Ban’s sanity in terms of scorination file creation workload, each participating nation will be limited to one athlete or team per event. This was always my intention, after the model of the AOlympic Team Challenge last year, but I failed to specify as such in the OP. Accordingly I apologize to those who have already rostered and named more than one athlete. Unless otherwise instructed, the first athlete named for each event in those rosters already posted will be considered the entrant from that nation.

The hockey roster is, for the most part, the same team that last competed for the Confederacy at the World Cup of Hockey, prior to the country’s unification. A few players from the Isle of Squornshelous who competed at the AOlympics Team Challenge are also included, as well as some bright young stars who have come along since that time. Off the puck, the team employs a high pressure defense designed to deny time to the puck carrier. Expect to see two, or even three forwards in on the forecheck, and checks finished hard to wear down the defense. Since this often leaves one forward behind the play, also expect to see the defense and even the goalkeeper attempting a lot of quick stretch passes off turnovers to start odd man rushes. In the offensive zone, they like to screen the keeper, and take shots from the point looking for deflections and rebounds down low. The team isn't exactly loaded with top end offensive talent, but hopes to make up for it with strong puck retrieval down low and along the boards.

Skip: Sergey Laxdal
Third: Irinushka Baardsen
Second: Aina Tkakuch
Lead: Vivi Kozlov

The team that competed as part of the Independent Athletes from Squornshelous delegation at the AOlympics Team Challenge returns, hoping to improve on their fourth place finish in that tournament.

Team V&T Look to establish Abovian / SRS Rivals

With nearly all of Vilita and Turori's closest geographical neighbors disappearing in a yet-to-be-definitively-explained mystical event, the delegation entered the AOlympic Games Winter Festival still not 100% certain who their true geographical rivals really were. The closest known nation to the extended lands of the Vilitan Union is the desert bordering nation of Jabal Akhdar, hosts of AOCAF 66. However, there is unsuprisingly no participation from the nearly-always-summer like nation in the AOlympic Winter Festival. Likewise, as the crow flies, the next closest nation - particularly to Vilita's capital of Alikki-Corra, is Hapilopper and Wreckeria. While the Haps had a thrilling run to the 90th World Cup Finals and a hot start to AOCAF 66 - they too had no delegation participating in the Winter Festival. So from there you cut across the great landmass to the Clawlanian peninsulas - where the Squornshelan Remnant States and Aboveland jut out of the great land mass. All three nations find themselves in Pool A of the upcoming Bonspiel AO or Atlantian Oceania Curling Championships. While four other nations will also join the party in the pool, the matches between these nations will certainly be on the eye as Vilita and Turori look to establish new rivals. Of course, as in any situation, it is likely the rivalry between bordering nations Squornshelan Remnant States and Aboveland will be stronger than any rivaly that develops between either nation and the Vilitan Union in these games. Vilita and Tuorri will also contest Aboveland in Ice Hockey - a game which the Vilitan side expects to win by double digits and any points dropped to the Abovians would potentially cause street rioting in Yeaddin, home of the Vilitan Union Delegation.

"So what's going on?"

"We overextended ourselves"

"What do you mean?"

"Well there's the NSCF, AOCAF, AOlympics, WBC, and the Winter Olympics all at once"

"Yeah and it's Adar the busiest time of the year with Purim and Pesach and all that"

"So a dumb decision to sign up for 5 events"

"Oh absolutely and we even more stupidly agreed to host one event"

"Wait, what? Where?"

"Oh we're not hosting the games, Busoga Islands has the facilities, but the AOCC is being run by Curling Milchama"

"Oh wow, we really screwed up"

"Most definitely"

"So what are we going to do?"

"Well we need to post rosters in at least all of the events"

"Have we done that?"

"Yes for all the team sports but no for any of the individual sports"

"So that makes it harder"

"It does"

"So we need to put in rosters for all those events"

"Exactly"

"So when are we going to do that?"

"Before Curling starts, so tonight at some point"

"At some point?! Shouldn't that happen now"

"Nah, I don't have the mental energy right now"

"What do you mean, you? You're not coming up with the rosters"

"I mean, I guess, but still it's hard to do"

"Ok, then what shall we do?"

"My suggestion is to get it done soon"

"Cool, we can do that"

"Yep"

"So, like, how are we doing?"

"Oh pretty terribly"

"That makes sense since there's so much going on at once"

"Yep"

"Is at least the curling going well?"

"Hasn't started yet"

"Well that makes things more difficult"

"It does"

"So what can we do?"

"Probably have more free time to make sure that we pay more attention and RP more"

"And is that coming?"

"Yes because mercifully Pesach is coming and that means Spring Break!"

"Woo Spring Break!"

"Yeah!"

"We'll get rosters up soon!"

"Woo! Yeah!"

"Come on You Warriors!"

"Let's Go Milchama!"

AOCC: Freyjia's Time To Shine

Postby Gyatso-kai » Thu Mar 31, 2022 11:53 pm

If it matters, count this towards the AOCC RP bonus. I plan on writing another RP specifically for the AOHC sometime tomorrow after work.

.:: Akman Ice Arena, Tezribu North Island, Busoga Islands ::.
2240 hours local time, 31 March 2022.2

The final horn had blown, ending the hockey game that Freyjia Gudrnsdottir had been watching for the last three hours or so. She grew up watching the local team – The Selfoss Miners – in the fledgling Imperial Hockey Association back in Arendalle; compared to the Avatarian Hockey League, the IHA was significantly smaller with just eight teams. In recent years, Freyjia had heard the rumors from her sister’s husband that the IHA was in talks of sending players to the AHL on an exchange program in the hopes of growing the sport at home, and when he had called Freyjia just hours after her curling team had loss its first game of the tournament to see if she was free to come watch the game between the World Champion Ice Bisons and the team from Pluvia, she asked Coach Kaneqkuik for the night off.

He said the team was just going back to the hotel to rest, so why not watch the other teams in the delegation play?

So, Freyjia changed quickly and rushed to Tezribu – a short drive from where the Curling matches were being held – and she met Johannes for the game. It was a small arena based on what he said the AHL was like, but to Freyjia, it was comparable to what she saw the Miners play in back home. Johannes had spent time in Gyatso-kai, having studied abroad there in college before meeting her sister at some alumni event for Her Majesty’s College of Business in Isarendal and getting married two years later. The wedding was your traditional Arendallish wedding – hand fasting, apron dresses and tunics, a fancy new sword for the groom as given from the bride’s family – and Freyjia enjoyed the whole affair, even if she was only nineteen at the time. Now, he was some big-shot accountant, with friends all over the realm and even some back in Gyatso-kai. He mentioned his brother’s husband worked for one of the AHL teams – Pouhai, I think – and that he had interviewed for a couple teams before settling on his current job in Isarendal.

”So how often do you catch Miners’ games?” Johannes asked, bringing Freyjia back to the present and out of her thoughts.

”Oh, I usually catch them all on TV.”

“Any in person?”

“About once every month or so. Hard to go between training and work.”
Freyjia smiled, remembering how many more games she got to watch back when she was in college. The curling team at Selfoss Provincial College practiced at the same arena that the Miners played in, so she would often stay behind after practice and watch the hockey team play and practice. She even dated a player for a few months back then, though it proved to be a bit of a waste as he was far more interested in the game than he was in her.

The game pays him. I don’t, Freyjia laughed before returning to the conversation. ”How about you? Any favorite IHA team?”

“Oh, I’m a huge Jarls fan,”
Johannes was quick to quip, and Freyjia smiled. The Jarls were the capital team, and as such, were one of, if not, the best team in the entire league. Playing in Isarendal, they had a huge arena to call ‘home ice’; 13,000 fans a night packed the arena for what was arguably the only entertainment in the capital for the winter and spring months of the year before the weather was more favorable for outdoor activities. ”I have season tickets if you ever want to catch a game with Åse or I. I have four seats right by the home goal.”

“Oh that’d be great,”
Freyjia smiled. ”Maybe we can even catch the next time the Miners come into town.”

“Absolutely! I’ll check the schedule,”
Johannes beamed as he pulled out his phone. He always tried to get along with the family, and especially in the last couple months, had been trying his best to get on Freyjia’s good side. No one knew why, but there were rumors that Åse was pregnant and he was wanting to make Freyjia the godmother. Of course she’d accept, but that was not why she had so quickly agreed to come to the game with Johannes. It was more about just getting away from the pressure of the Winter Festival and just relaxing.

The team had been practicing all week for these matches, and wanting to make as good an impression on the regional community as they could. Because of her father’s Avatarian citizenship, Freyjia had qualified for the Avatarian delegation, and given how Arendalle and Gyatso-kai shared history – Arendalle had originally been a Mandalorian colony before its independence some one-hundred-and-fifty years ago. Freyjia was the first Arendallish citizen to ever play on an Avatarian team, so she bore some heavy responsibility representing her own country while also representing Gyatso-kai. Her Majesty had yet to call for multi-verse teams to venture out into Atlantian Oceania to play, so getting onto the Avatarian team would be a test to show her prowess, and that pressure was, at times, a bit much. Her being the first Arendallish citizen had been deemed worthy enough that she had been given a personal visit by the Avatar at home when she was selected for the Curling team. She could still remember him – wise, much taller than she had imagined, and built like a solid oak tree – and how impressed she was. He was very soft spoken, which given his religious background, did not surprise Freyjia at all. He commented on how similar her home was to those of his children back home; he had a daughter a couple years younger than Freyjia, something he seemed proud of as he showed her pictures of his daughter. She was an athlete like Freyjia; playing football at Ba Sing Se State, and had just won the championship for woman’s football a week prior. Freyjia had certainly not obtained anything like a national championship back when she was in school – taking Selfoss to the Final Four in the national tournament, but losing the final match by just a single point and going home in third.

”How we handle defeat is far more important than how we relish our victories,” the Avatar had said when she had told him the story. And he was right, of course… in the same way all grandparent figures are with sage advice. Freyjia thought to her most recent defeat – losing to Busoga by eight in the second game of the tournament – and wondered what he would say of how she was taking defeat.

”You know it’s good to get out for a bit,” Johannes said, seeming to almost read Freyjia’s mind. ”Refresh the mind, relax a bit.”

“Yeah…”
Freyjia sighed before looking to her own phone. A text from her sister, asking how the game ended. She texted back, saying how the Ice Bisons had won by a single goal, scored by none other than Song Unataq in the final two minutes of the game to bring the final score to 4-3. She had followed Song’s career ever since she was a teenager, and even had his jersey from the last World Cup that she had brought to the game. She secretly had enjoyed the seats being so close to the glass; during warm-ups. Hed Torvik had pointed her out to Song, and he had brought over a puck and tossed it to her and Johannes, which had made her smile like she was a kid again. Just the fact that the “Mandalorian Shield” had seen her, and the smile on Song’s face, was more than enough for her to call this game a win. She had been surprised when Song announced his retirement before the last World Cup, and she screamed in delight when he told a reporter after scoring the game-winning goal of World Cup XLIV that he would ‘seriously reconsider’ his previous sentiment regarding retirement…

And here she was… competing for Gyatso-kai, watching Song still skate and score in the newest jerseys, and still winning a game as if he were ten years younger…

”Well, we better get going,” Johannes said, noting how the arena had mostly cleared out. ”I’ll see if I can get tickets for their next game, if you’d like.”

“We’ll have to see when it is, but if I’m free, you bet I’d be down.”

“Good, good.”
Johannes smiled as he turned away to start walking up the stairs. Freyjia stood herself, looked to the ice, and smirked.

Maybe we’ll get an afternoon slot for play, and the Ice Bisons will play at night.

AOlympics Day 1-3

Postby Squornshelan Remnant States » Fri Apr 01, 2022 8:20 pm

Home Snow Advantage

As the games of the winter AOlympiad get under way, the hosting contingent from the Confederacy have already put in an impressive performance, earning five medals on the second day of competition including one gold. The more northerly of the two hosts, the Squornshelans were expected to be strong competitors in the skiing events taking place around Han Dold City, and have so far fulfilled that expectation. Han Dold locals took silver in each of the first two races of the alpine schedule, with Carola Gabhann of Han Wavel earning her medal in slalom, and Ionatan Rhydderch representing Han Dold City itself in giant slalom. Each of them shared their podium with skiiers from the Cordian and Pluvian Isles, though the finishing order was reversed. The real surprise is that a very talented team of skiiers from Geisenfried has so far only been able to muster a single bronze medal in women's moguls. The competition was taken in something of a minor upset by Zhivka Lanik, a native of Gachikovo in the Molvanian Alps. Overcome with emotion after her winning run, she explained to an interviewer that her goal had simply been to do her best, and she'd hardly dared to dream about what it might be like to make the podium. Elsewhere at Greenstone mountain, Jarkko Laukkanen also took a silver sandwiched between skiiers from the Isles. In Oneonta, the second day of sliding saw the luge doubles come to a close, and the team of Scolaidhe and Fylan completed their recovery from a difficult first run to hang on for a bronze less than six tenths ahead of the duo from Fort McKinley.

Down south, the delegation of Squornshelans competing in Busoga Islands has had more mixed results. Ljubo Markovic was the tenth and last skater to qualify from heats in the men's 500m race, but no other individual Confederate skater advanced, though both the women's and mixed relay teams did manage to do so the following day on the short track. Markovic is certainly not expected to contend for a medal, but his effort should be applauded nonetheless. The hockey team, however, have won a couple of close ones to clinch their way through to the quarterfinals. They saw off a determined challenge by the team from Baker Park, leading by two second period goals from Bradaigh, but saw that margin narrowed to one early in the third. Determined shot blocking and checking, and some really sharp stops from Rinne stifled the push for the tying goal, and Strom's 200 foot clearance banked in off the post to put the game on ice. The second game was a grinding effort against Milchama, the teams deadlocked at one after each got an early goal. To make matters worse, Wyrzik was ejected from the game, and will serve a suspension against Valanora for slew-footing an opposing forward. Fortunately, there was no apparent injury on the play, and the Confederates were able to kill off the ensuing penalty. With Devine and Groshev double shifting with Strom, and Bents and Stepan picking up extra minutes, there was more pressure on the forwards to pitch in defensively, and less chance of defense jumping in to the play. As happens so often, hulking power forward Poplawski found a way to break through in the clutch. Driving to the net with a defender draped all over him, he swept the puck across the top of the crease, just beyond the goalie's poke check, and lifted it over the outstretched pad for the winner. Unfortunately, the same results have eluded Sergey Laxdal and company in the AOCC. They've stumbled out of the gate to a pair of losses, and will need to turn things around quickly if they're going to have any chance to contend for a medal.

As more skiing and sliding events begin the nation will be truly proud of the successes so far, and eager to see more medals to come.

Sliding down a mountain on long pieces of wood. Scooting around on a sheet of ice with knives strapped to your boots. To say nothing of the insanity of bobsledding. From a certain perspective, you could say this is all a bunch of Winter Madness

Stage 3 of the Iditarod event began in the small town of Mandana, heading out of town to the northwest. From there, the mushers would leave signs of civilization behind, heading out into less developed northern regions of the Keuka mountains. Their path wound through valleys, branching around steep hills and presenting teams with choices about which mountain paths would be the quickest. Finally, after a grueling day on the trail, the teams arrived one by one in the town of Otisco, scarcely more than a village, on the north side of the mountains, just a few miles from the border between Han Dold and the state of East Flania.

CoCoCo Logistics and Holdings Company Overview

Postby Vilita and Turori » Sat Apr 02, 2022 6:11 am

Image

CoCoCoast, CoCoCounty, CoCoColania, Atlantian Oceania :: For much of its existence, the CoCoCo Logistics and Holdings company has been one of those behind-the-scenes entities that keeps the multiverse running without being a household name. Originally just a shipping and logistics company that went by the uninspiring name of "The Shipping and Logistics Company" - or "The Company" for Short, the CoCoCo saw its first major expansion after the fall of the reign of Lord Gregory in the sporting region of Esportiva. It was there that the Logistics and Holdings company scored a major contract with the newly established government of South Covello to bring Food and other Goods into the country to help them recover from the previous tyrannical administration. However, the Shipping and Logistics company quickly realized that there was no proper infrastructure within South Covello to distribute the goods being brought in. As such, the Shipping and Logistics Company, after acquiring an island off the coast of South Covello as its home logistics base, would transform into the multi-national logistics and holdings company CoCoCo establishing itself as a primary supplier of core goods and services. Internally the goods were used to provide essential raw materials and goods to Turorian shops such as Cocoa-bo that had opened a presence in country. Soon after, however, central public distribution locations were also established.

Of the Holdings portion of the company name would be One of the most prominent public facing arms of the CoCoCo is Coco-mart, the big box store which originated in South Covello. Coco-marts were stood up throughout South Covello to serve as an interface between CocCoCo and the public offering excess goods to the citizens of South Covello and somewhat reasonable prices compared with what it would have taken for a citizen to acquire similar goods during the reign of Lord Gregory. Other major public-facing CoCoCo entities include Cocogas and CoCoLectric. The CoCoCo have established multiple headquarters throughout the multiverse including their original location based out of Turori, they primary overseas headquarters in Esportiva on a collection of Islands off the coast of South Covello where raw goods are imported, sorted and redistributed to the mainland in support of CoCoCo entities, and smaller regional hubs throughout the multiverse like the one found in the former Free Republics as well as a minor depot in Starksville, Cassadaigua.

Now, Coco-mart's can be seen popping up wherever the CoCoCo Logistics and Holdings company performs its primary operations - shipping and logistics. The CoCoCo name has also become well known as an Associate sponsor in the world of Motorsports, including prominent placement on the Race Eelandii! Vilita and Turori World Grand Prix Motorworks team cars on the World Grand Prix Championship circuit and the #60 CoCoCo Dart of Rockii Ezis in the NSSCRA Everlong Contenders Series. The Coco-mart name also regularly pops up at sporting events such as the AOlympic Winter Festival where a tented Coco-mart can be found at three different venues providing standard goods to fans, media and competitors alike on some of the remote locations hosting the Winter Games. In a shrewd move of marketability, Vilita and Turori Freestyle Skiing competitor Kikoro Mavazoji posted a picture of themselves on twii.tur shortly after winning the Gold Medal in the Mens Mogul competition at the AOlympic Winter Games standing in front of the pop-up Coco-mart tent with the caption "This is where I got my gold medal goods from!". It is believed that Mavazoji has already received a personal services contract officer from the CoCoCo Logistics and Holdings Company.

Recently, the CoCoCo Logistics Company has also opened their own twii.tur account which they have largely used to convey information across the Turorian Weather & Information Interchange about the types of things that most users care absolutely nothing about, such as what the Top 10 Goods are being held in Surplus in CoCoCo Warehouses across Atlantian Oceania. They even went so far as to invite other entities and nations to respond to their twii with the list of their Top 5 Goods in Export.
