There had to be one universe, just this one, where we don’t end up together. Here and now just happens to be it - Gaby Dunn

Premise.

Welcome to 2020: The Grand Game, an alternate-history modern-world geopolitical nation RP. Here we attempt to tell the story of a unique world, a multi-polar world similar to our own but yet starkly different in many ways. In this RP, you’ll be playing the role of a nation and be tasked with managing internal, foreign and military affairs in this similar yet different global climate. As long as nothing contradicts the established history as laid out in the OP, you have relatively free reign regarding your nations history from the general POD in the year 1600, just keep that in mind and you'll be fine. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you are running a “real” nation, this isn’t a game of Hoi4 so pour some cold water on that war-boner. Your government’s actions must be realistic for the type of government, and keep in mind the state of your people because they very much can, and will, revolt and try to overthrow you depending on how you run things. So long as you keep in mind the ideology of your government and your people, however, you should once more be fine.

While there is a League of Nations it is significantly more divided than the UN given the state of world politics and it has no hegemonic superpower to enforce it's decisions. Thus, there is no real “organized”, legal way of really sanctioning a nation globally. Don’t act like this gives you a free hand though. You won’t be sanctioned for your government type, but if you act cruelly and do something as heinous as try to commit genocide you’re at major risk for sanction or invasion. If it isn’t in the name of human rights, it’ll be in the name of natural resources or geopolitical interest. Morality and imperialist interests will always exist, so you shouldn’t be surprised if your genocidal dictatorship ends up with an Abrams (or Challenger, or T-90, or ZTZ) parked in the backyard of your palace.

Also, the history is not 100% set in stone, I've done my best to try and make an interesting and at least vaguely plausible multipolar alternate modern world but if people have interesting suggestions, don't be afraid to bring them up! Also, a big shoutout to the Cobalt Network for coming up with the International Entity mechanic!

Last but not least... Co-Op's wanted!

Rules

1: The word of the OP and Co-Ops (Chewion and Hypron) is law. You are encouraged to talk about it if you think we’re doing something wrong, but in the end, we call the shots, deal with it.

2: No drama in the OOC so don't flame, troll or otherwise be a douche. If you go too far and recognize this you'll get away with a warning but constant harassment, even after mediation, is a ban.

3: No godmodding, meta-gaming, etc. If you try to bend the rules or pull any gamey tricks, you’ll be warned and any meta RP actions will be disregarded. Continued repetition is a ban.

4: No one-liners so don't just make posts about single thing. Write a section regarding an economic endeavor, another dealing with diplomatic messages and another about your new space-program.

5: Post regularly. I won’t be too strict, but you generally shouldn’t have more than a week or two IRL between your posts. If you get sick/busy IRL, I’ll give you extra time as necessary.

6: You’re running a nation, so act like it. You can’t just invade places as you please and if you run your nation into the ground, the people will rise up and try to depose your government. When making a decision, try to keep in mind “would the people of my nation support this?”

7: Be realistic. You can’t just magically land divisions across the Pacific Ocean, and federalizing an ethnically diverse nation isn’t randomly going to make all regional nationalism disappear.

8: This RP isn’t just about war, so your posts shouldn’t fully revolve around it. Likewise, when you go to war, you should build it up to psychologically prepare your people for war. No OOC penalties for breaking this rule, but your population won’t like it.

9: Have fun, no, seriously. This RP should be fun for all involved, if it feels like a chore, you’re welcome to leave. It’s just an RP, you shouldn’t stress yourself over it or have it take priority over your real life.

10: If you aren’t sure about something, ask the future co-ops or myself! We’re not geopolitics gods or anything but we’re always here to try to do our best to help you with your plans, be it world domination or improving your roads.

Guidelines and stuff to keep in mind

1: National Unity: Basically a measure of united your country and if the government is looked on in a positive light from the perspective of the people. This value can be effected by many things, for instance, national unrest. If your nation is in rebellion obviously your national unity would be radically lowered. If your government has been found to have been doing things your citizenry does not approve of such as for example subverting democratic processes in a democratic nation, your national unity will also lower. While there is no strict numerical value for national unity, keeping it high is important in order to maintain stability.

2: Diplomacy: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Meeting with a leader from one country can lower the opinion of your nation in another. Diplomacy will in many ways be at the heart of this roleplay, not warfare. Warfare will most surely exist but much of the roleplay should be occupied by managing national policy and involving yourself with other nations in agreements, civil wars etc, using your information about the global situation and your wits to turn the situation to your advantage rather than just going in "guns blazing" all the time. Thus diplomatic meetings, summits and backroom talks are all highly encouraged in the IC!

3. Economics: Every nation has a unique approach regarding their economic system especially so in regards to rising powers and planned or semi-planned economies. Radical state control or completely free-wheeling Laissez Faire economic policies will in most situations lead to an economic downturn and failure to implement economic policies or implementing policies which end up having negative effects on the nation will result in lowered national unity. Most countries with resource-dependent economies are unstable in nature and are thus highly likely to suffer from the negative effects of economic instability. Diversifying into different sectors can help escape this, however it could anger the corporate/political elites of your nation.

4. Internal Policy: Another major part of the RP is the governance of the state and implementation of internal policy connected to education, healthcare, infrastructure, culture or whatever else you decide to focus on. Elections are decided by the Global Authority for democratic nations while authoritarian states must keep the elite ruling class happy, failing to do this makes authoritarian states more likely to undergo violent political shakeups or even coup-attempts if national unity reaches a critical low-point. Large-scale political unrest can occur if either your leader has maintained an unpopular grip on high levels of power, instituted major policies that contradict with your nation's ideological/cultural/religious values, and if resources necessary for the economy and every-day life are horribly distributed. Policies which advocate for a massive level of connection to the global economy will make your country more open to foreign influences in both politics and culture while cosmopolitan ideals in your country grow stronger, with reactionary politics rising as a legitimate alternative over the course of years.

5. Technology: Technology is an essential part of economics, warfare, standards of living, espionage and so on. Countries that pour more money into technology development, or nations which subsidize tech development companies and so on will grow their technology more quickly. Nations can also enter into joint research agreements, speeding up the process of development. Generally nations will have access to the same military equipment they do IRL. Like in any Alt-Hist RP though there will be plenty of nations with more developed industrial bases than they have in IRL, prototypes are sort of an open game, including paper prototypes. In a world where for example the Anglois Kingdom isn't part of an alliance where the UASC is obliged to step in and defend it, it would likely have placed money into it's own domestic warplane designs, such as maybe the BAE P125. Another thing to consider is international alignment. For example in this little slice of the multiverse, Poland is part of the Comintern and thus likely wouldn't be operating Leopard 2's or F-16's, instead it would probably be using T-80's and SU-37's while the MSBS would be chambered for the 5.45 instead of the 5.56 cartridge. If you'd like to produce something another nation has you can always ask them OOCly or ICly if you are allowed to license produce it. In some cases I'd be willing to, if both players agree, move a domestic design from one nation to the other in terms of which nation invented it. New military tech takes time to produce and implement into your armed forces but in a world with a generally more tense and competitive global climate there will be some leeway in introduction dates, though this does not in any way mean that for example the Soviets will be allowed to have made the T-14 into the T-34 of the 21'st century or that Columbia is gonna get 10 Ford-Class Carriers.

6. War: If diplomacy fails and war breaks out National Unity plays an important role in warfare by determining if the population enthusiastically supports the war effort or riots against conscription in the streets. National Unity can be promoted pre-war by using propaganda to rile up your populace before issuing a declaration of war. If your population doesn't support an offensive war, then you will be hampered. War should be declared before any invasions can begin as any invasion of a country without a declaration of war will deeply tarnish your international image. During the war, geography and logistics should be considered with great care. Work to keep your frontline at an ideal size and not overextending yourself, A full invasion into Siberia, the Himalayas, or the Amazon is a guaranteed way to overextend and collapse your supply chains faster than you can say Barbarossa. Military operations should be noted in detail or the GA will have to make assumptions and military progress may be a little hampered. How much detail you want to go into is totally up to you, but the more detail the better usually. Keep in mind that your troops will not do exactly what you say 100% of the time. There will be miscommunications, there will be mistakes, there will be desertion and there will be incompetency. While this very unlikely to cripple your entire war effort it should be something to keep in the back of your mind.

Established History

1: As the Hundred Years War rages in France, Jeanne d'Arc dies when an outbreak of plague sweeps through her village, leading to an English victory in the conflict. The Plantagenets take the French throne and move the English court to Paris where they proceed to restructure the various French regional parliaments into a single centralized parliament subordinated to the crown along the English model. With the monarchy situated in Paris, the English parliament takes an increasingly active role in governing England, whereas the English nobility adopts more and more French customs and culture. Out of this English victory in the middle-ages, the United Anglois Kingdom of today was born.

2: The Fourth Crusade sacks Constantinople much as in OTL and then proceeds to crush the Byzantine Empire. Then, the crusaders continue deep into Anatolia where they break the back of the Seljuks and found the crusader kingdom of Anatolia, leaving Trebizond as the sole remnant of old Byzantium in the region's north-east. The early destruction of the Turkic forces in Anatolia leads Mamluk Egypt to become the dominant power in the Middle-East and North Africa between the 15'th and 19'th centuries and the world's pre-eminent Muslim, power which at it's highest extended it's control from Tunisia in the west to Iraq in the east and from southern Anatolia in the north almost down to the Congo in the south when at it's height.

3: The Renaissance/Age of Exploration/Military Revolution and European Colonization happen much as in OTL with some difference left up to the players. The Anglois Kingdom and Kingdom of Iberia become the major colonial powers in the world with the Netherlands, Occitaine, Ireland and Sweden becoming lesser Colonial powers, Germany and Italy join the race for colonies later on in the late 19'th century. The Reformation does occur but Lutheranism never really expands far beyond Northern Germany, Scandinavia, Scotland and the Low Countries. Calvinism gains a substantial following in England and parts of France, however the English Parliament, soon followed by the Royal Anglois authorities pass acts allowing various religious dissident groups to migrate to the colonies where they could practice their faith free from persecution, leading to Columbia being the majority protestant state that it is today.

4: The Anglois colonies in North America revolt and proclaim their independence as the United American States of Columbia under the world's first modern democratic constitution, not that dissimilar to the US of OTL. There is a significant divide between the Anglo north and French-speaking hugenot-descended south however, not only in culture but in economic organization as the southern states are highly dependent on cotton-slavery. Iberia's American colonies start slipping from the ailing Empires grasp in the early 19'th century and Columbia starts rising to great power station after crushingly defeating Mexico in a war over the territory of Texas which leads to the European empires viewing Columbia with hostility as it worked to keep the empires from regaining lost sway in the Americas by using a weakened Mexico as a springboard for their influence.

5: The the deep north-south divide in the UASC finally leads to the hugenot states seceding after a contentious election between anti-slavery Republican Abraham Lincoln and pro-slavery Democrat John C Breckinridge, in turn leading to the Columbian Civil War. Led by abolitionist President Abraham Lincoln, the northern states succeed in defeating the southern states thanks to their great advantage in population, resources and industry managing to in time overcome the initial military leadership advantages of the south. The subsequent assassination of Lincoln by southern radical Valentin Dubois and domination of Congress by the radical republicans led to the passing of the 14'th Amendment to the Columbian constitution, giving all former black slaves full Columbian birthright citizenship. Violence stemming from white extremists and the rtaliatory crackdowns by the government in Washington plagues the South until the late 1880's as the country goes through a long and painful reconstruction period. The violence in the South pushes more than 100 000 Columbian freedmen to make the journey to Liberia, expanding the territory significantly and kicking off the Scramble for Africa as Anglois worked to limit the spread of Columbian influence.

6: Russian Tzar Alexander II survives the assassination attempt against him and continues to reform Russia, investing in education, infrastructure and raising the level of professionalism in the officer corps, his successor dies of disease soon after rising to the throne and Russian Foreign Minister Simonov is replaced before managing to come to an agreement and sign a treaty with Japan which had the potential to avert the looming threat of war between the two nations in Korea and Manchuria. Russia suffers a loss against the Japanese in 1905 and the internal conditions in Russia worsen significantly during the rule of ultra-conservative Tzar Nicholas II, feeding and further radicalizing Russia's growing communist movement.

7: In a bid to unify Germany and complete Bismarcks vision, the North German Confederation invades Bavaria and the other south German states in 1915, pulling the Austro-Hungarian Empire into the war as it stood as the leader of the South German Confederation. This was the starting point of the Great War, with the North German Confederation, Anglois Kingdom, Kingdom of Italy and Mamluk Empire as parts of the Entente, facing off against an alliance made up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire, Occitaine, Anatolia and the southern German states. By 1920, the Austrian Empire had collapsed, as did the Mamluk Empire while the Russian Empire fell to a communist revolution led by Vladimir Lenin. The Entente Alliance had been victorious. The Northern Germans annexed the Southern German states, Austria and Bohemia while Italy gained Nice and Corsica from Occitaine and most importantly taking Venice from Austria. The Mamluk empire collapsed and with it rose the Hashemites and Saudis while Anglois greatly extended it's influence in the Middle-East. Poland, Hungary, Finland and Yugoslavia all gained independence from the crumbling empires that had once ruled them while an unstable Hungary soon lost Transylvania to Romania and Anatolia found itself at odds with both Greece and the USSR until the tensions in the Black Sea ended with the signing of the Turin Accord, leading to the formation of the Free City of Constantinople as an independent, neutral state and guarantor of the Moncreux Convention. The guns were silent, for the time being.

8: The bloodletting and horror of the Great War led to deep, profound changes in Europe, radical movements rose as the old monarchic systems seemed less and less appealing to the continents bloodied youth. Still, as the global economy boomed, these groups remained on the margins. After all, few people listen to extremists and political doomsday prophets when there's more than enough money to go around except perhaps in Japan where the fledgling democracy fell to a Showa nationalist regime. In 1930 however, the Berlin Stock Market Crash brought about a deep global crisis, the Great Depression had come. The profound economic hardship led to great unrest across the world. War broke out in Asia as the Japanese Empire first invaded Manchuria and then struck toward the Chinese heartland, making great bloody strides into a China weakened by internal division and civil war before Chiang Kai-Shek managed to organize a united front against the Japanese. An economically struggling Europe saw communist revolutions in countries such as Poland and Romania while in other countries such as Germany both extreme left and right ideologies were on the rise. Finally, in 1935 as it seemed like the faltering conservative government in the German Empire was about to enter into a coalition with the surging right-wing radical Teutonist Party, a communist revolution erupted in the Ruhr and along Germany's northwestern coast, soon thereafter, the Polish-majority areas of the German Empire such as Posen, East Pommerania, Masuria and Upper Silesia saw their own uprisings while Czech communists rose up in Bohemia, all funded and supported by the Comintern. The German Empire descended into a bloody civil war. By 1940 however, it seemed that Imperial German forces with Entente support were finally on the verge of defeating the communist rebels after years of bloody fighting, troops from the People's Republic of Poland and USSR crossed the German border to support the revolutionaries as Polish leader Bierut had managed to convince Soviet leader Bukharin to intervene directly in the Germany's civil war. The Comintern intervention immediately pulled Anglois and Italy into the conflict and so, the Second Great War in Europe began.

9: With the great powers of Europe busy fighting once again, the Japanese saw their chance to capture the resources they desperately needed to finally break the deadlock in China by striking against the European colonies in Southeast Asia and against the Columbian territory of the Philippines. With the Anglois busy with the war in Europe, the Japanese decided to strike the Columbian Pacific Fleet at anchor in Hawaii on December 7'th 1941, hoping to destroy it and force Columbia to remain out of the conflict and open the path for Japan to attack Dutch Indonesia and Anglois Indochina. The attack on Pearl Harbor led to the start of the Pacific War where Columbia found itself standing side by side with the Chinese in a war against Japan and fighting soon erupted between the Columbian and Japanese navies across the Pacific ocean as both sides tried to take strategically important islands. In Europe the Entente alliance managed to defeat most German communist forces in the western parts of the country by late 1941, regaining control of the immensely important Ruhr and northwestern Germany, allowing them to turn their full attention to the east and stop the Soviet-Polish attempt to overrun the defenses along the Oder river and open a path toward Berlin as well as to gain foothold in Bohemia which had almost completely fallen under Comintern control. With the great powers busy, the Hungarians attempted to invade Romania but were forced to halt their advance despite Bulgarian assistance in the south, leading Hungary and Bulgaria to join the Entente in the fight against the Comintern and forcing Germany, Anglois and primarily Italy to divert troops to the Balkans.

10: Throughout 1942 and 1943 the Chinese managed to slowly retake ground inch by bloody inch thanks to Columbian material support and training as well a large number of Columbian volunteer pilots managing to help the struggling Chinese air force to gain air parity with the Japanese while in the Pacific, Columbian forces began inching closer to Japan in bloody landing after bloody landing. The great naval battles of the Pacific War proved the Age of the Battleship to be over. With ever more crucial Japanese sea-lanes being cut with every month, Japan's defeat seemed only a matter of time and indeed, by late 1944, Columbian troops were landing on Kyushu, but with casualties that horrified the Columbian public at home. Forcing the Columbian President Roosevelt to enter into negotiations with the Japanese, to the great protests of China and Chiang Kai-Shek. On the 21'st of November 1944, the Peace of Bangkok ended the Pacific War, Japan lost nearly all of it's gains in China but retained the city of Quingdao as well as the Dalian Peninsula, Taiwan and the Kinmen Isles, as well as retaining control of Korea. Chiang Kai-Shek, deeply depressed over the "Columbian Betrayal" and his perceived failure to liberate all of China from the Japanese retreated from politics, leading to the rise of Wang Jingwei and Mao Zedong. Meanwhile in Europe, the Western front had largely ground to a stalemate on the Oder and Neisse, similar the one seen during the First Great War however, both sides were marshalling their forces for large offensives. In 1943 a great Entente offensive crossed the Oder and pushed the Polish-Soviet forces out of Neumark and Eastern Pommerania. The celebrations were however soon cut short as in the Balkans, Bulgaria, cut off from most Entente support fell to combined Romanian and Soviet forces. Another Comintern offensive took Bratislava but failed to break out across the Hungarian Plain while Entente forces concentrated in Karlsbad in order to attempt an offensive against Prague. The front ground to a halt once more with a number of large offensives attempted but failing to gain significant ground and often leading to encirclements as attacking forces were subjected to mechanized counterattacks. With the combined death-toll of the Second Great War rising to 13 million by the start of 1945, both sides grew increasingly worried that the war may lead to the great internal instability that destroyed Austria-Hungary and the Mamluk Empire if it were to keep going on.

11: In May of 1945, peace finally came to Europe with the signing of the Treaty of Copenhagen. The treaty saw Europe's border's redrawn mostly along the line of control. While the war had no decisive victor, it is undeniable that the Comintern had significantly expanded thanks to the conflict, with Poland gaining territory and a communist Czechoslovakia being formed as well as the installation of a communist regime in Bulgaria. Understandably, Germany furious at the loss of territory and seeing a massive influx of Germans previously inhabiting the territories lost in the East almost left the Entente over the "Betrayal and cowardice of the Anglois" and formed an alternative alliance with Hungary and Yugoslavia, however, the collapse of the alliance was avoided. The borders between the Entente and Comintern nations remained tense and highly militarized for decades in anticipation of another conflict both sides were sure to come.

12: With the death of Chiang Kai-Shek in 1953, most expected Wang Jingwei to replace him as the leader of China, what happened instead was a coup orchestrated by the KMT-Right led by Dai Li who used his control over the Chinese security apparatus to purge the KMT and secure his control over the party and the country as a whole. The coup led to the Trial of the 55 where Wang, Mao and other leading members of the KMT-Left were charged with crimes such as treason and collaboration with the Japanese occupiers during the Pacific War and sentenced to death. Where many had expected China to lurch toward socialism and closer ties with the Comintern under Wang, it instead turned hard to the right under Dai Li who proceeded to rapidly industrialize China with a series of brutal economic plans which did give the country a strong industrial base and solid military-industrial complex, came at the cost of significant human suffering. In the late 1950's the grip of the European powers over their colonial possessions in Asia began to slip, as the Anglois left Indochina, the weak, unstable governments in both Cambodia and Vietnam fell to communist revolutionaries who proceeded to cement their control over the country, Chinese forces invaded Vietnam in an attempt to install a pro-Chinese government in Hanoi, still, after fighting on for a decade, the Chinese military proved incapable of defeating the Vietnamese which led to an internal revolt in the KMT which ousted Dai Li from power in 1967. Reformers such as the previously exiled Chiang Ching-Kuo and old KMT-Left members like Deng Xiaoping came in to fill the void. The Chinese economy was reformed and opened to the world leading to great economic boom which by today has turned China into an economic giant rivalled only by Columbia.

13: After it's first democratic election in India in 1954, the former Anglois Dominion was granted independence, with Myanmar becoming a separate country but no Muslim state being created. The new state was soon rocked by several Islamic and Hindu groups rebelling in an attempt to establish religious dominance for their group in the new state. After several years of fighting, The unified Indian state collapsed as Bengal, Pakistan and Nepal broke away from New Delhi and formed their own independent states.

14: With unrest sweeping many of their African colonies, the Anglois and German monarchs released the symbolic “Sandringham Proclamation” in 1956, in which they promised to gradually grant their colonies in Africa independence. Later, Occitaine and Iberia released similar declarations of their own in 1960. Determined not to let the decolonization of Africa lead to war as in India or the potential rise of communist regimes as had happened in Vietnam and Cambodia, the European powers went through a long, slow process decolonization process in Africa involving plenty of compromises. As a result of this most of the African colonies had been peacefully transitioned into largely functional, democratic states by the late 1980's, several of whom soon proceeded to join the Entente.

15: 1955 saw the first atomic bomb be dropped on a remote, isolated part of German Congo, confirming that nuclear weapons could be used in warfare. The Germans were the first to create nuclear weapons technology, but they were by no means the last. The sheer panic that gripped Czechoslovakia and Poland soon led to the Soviet Union testing it's first nuclear weapon in 1958, followed closely by Anglois and Columbia in 1960. The destructive power of this new weapon led the nuclear-capable states of Germany, Anglois, Columbia, China, Brazil and the Soviet Union to sign the Nuclear Armament Control Treaty in 1973 where they agreed to limit their stockpile to no more than 100 nukes each. India would later start a nuclear weapons program of it's own in the late 1970's, but only keep 20 warheads after heavy international pressure and comprehensive sanctions.

16: The 1970's led to a lowering of tensions in Europe and some demilitarization as new treaties were signed between the Entente and Comintern, opening for trade and moving the continent one step closer to lasting peace after the end of the inconclusive Second Great War. However, in Afghanistan, the deeply unpopular communist regime ruling the country was in danger of being overthrown by the Taliban leading the Soviet Union and Comintern to send military support in order to prop up the regime in Kabul while Entente intelligence agencies proceeded to ship weapons to the Taliban as well as to provide them with training in guerilla warfare. The Afghan communist regime fell in 1981 and Comintern forces retreated in a humiliation similar to what the Chinese endured in Vietnam.

17: By the late 1980's South Africa went through it's own trials and tribulations, the death of Nelson Mandela in prison robbed the country of a figure capable of making the compromises needed to keep the country together. With Mandela gone, the conservative elements of the Apartheid regime dominated the conversation on reform and South Africa eventually collapsed into a civil war with a large Bantu rebellion in the Eastern areas of the country. While superior in training and equipment, the South African military quickly lost control over the eastern countryside, holding out in Pretoria, Durban and Bloemfontein which the rebels quickly besieged. As the ethnic violence quickly spiraled out of control Columbia intervened and demanded an end to the fighting, later presiding over the peace talks along with the Anglois. The Bloemfontein Accord saw South Africa split into the Cape Republic in the west and Iriphabuliki in the east which declared it's capital in Egoli, formerly Johannesburg. A large guerilla insurgency soon gripped the Cape, armed and funded by the Johannesburg government with the aim of overthrowing the Cape Town government and reuniting South Africa under Egoli. While most people with advanced economic skill in South Africa concentrated in the Cape, the general uncompetitiveness of South Africa along with internal unrest and distance from most of the world's economic centers gave the Cape Republic a stagnant economy seemingly incapable of recovering from the War. The Republic of Iriphabuliki soon descended into a repressive authoritarian dictatorship and after it's economy collapsed and was ravaged by hyperinflation, Iriphabuliki became one of the poorest nations on Earth.

18: The destabilization in Africa caused by the South African Civil War and the rise of a new conservative government in Anglois led the country to indefinitely postpone the decolonization process in Anglois East Africa and Ceylon. Meanwhile, referendums were led in both Singapore and Hong Kong, where both colonies voted for integration into Anglois as full constituent regions.

19: In 1991 after the death of it's popular monarch, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia descended into civil war between nationalist rebels seeking independence, communists and Yugoslav royalists, immediately destabilizing the European continent and threatening to spark another war between the Entente and the Comintern and the two sides supported their preferred proxies with weapons and foreign fighters. The brutal fighting raged until 1996 when a Hungarian SAM shot down a Romanian military cargo aircraft carrying weapons to the Yugoslav communist fighters in control of most of Serbia. The incident soon spiraled out of control as German border troops exchanged small-arms and mortar fire with their Czechoslovak and Polish counterparts and general mobilization was ordered in several countries. Europe would surely have been bloodied by a Third Great War if not for a joint Sino-Columbian offer to mediate which luckily managed to de-escalate the tension enough to avoid an all-out war. Instead, Yugoslavia was officially broken up, with the democratic republics of Slovenia, Croatia, and Herzeg-Bosnia joining the Entente while communist Serbia joined the Comintern after both sides agreed to split the disputed Kosovo region.

20: In 2001 the Western Hemisphere was shaken from it's slumber by the 9/11 attacks against Columbia. Highlighting the rise of international jihadist terrorism previously largely confined to the Middle-East and in a lesser degree Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent, one of the most important centers of these many movements was Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, which Columbia proceeded to invade the very same year, quickly overthrowing the Taliban regime and occupying the country. Despite the rapid occupation of the country, Columbian forces and those of their Golden Circle allies soon found themselves embroiled in a long, costly guerilla war in Afghanistan's harsh terrain. The War in Afghanistan did however lead to improved relations between the Golden Circle and the Comintern as the two blocks cooperated against cross-border terrorist networks operating in both Afghanistan and Turkestan. The Comprehensive Treaty on Cooperation was signed by representatives of the GC and Comintern in 2008, leading to improved trade relations between the two, but was also exploited by the USSR to gradually glean advanced Columbian technology and attempt to reverse-engineer it. Although the Columbian government has recently been trying to prevent this and hopes to renegotiate it's trade agreements with the USSR.

21: By 2010, a combination of internal pressures and dissatisfaction with their authoritarian states along with the adverse economic effects of the 2008 Financial Crisis led to widespread protests erupting in a wide variety of Middle-Eastern states, however, the situation was the worst in the United Arab Republic which had risen after baathist revolutionaries overthrew the Hashemite Sharif in the 1950's. The UAR collapsed after attempted crackdowns spiraled out of control when some units refused to open fire on the demonstrators which had gathered in the UAR's major cities and instead defected. The UAR soon collapsed in a multi-factional civil war in 2014, pitting the regimes loyalists, Hashemite restorationists, Shias, Kurdish communists, Maronites and Sunni Wahhabis against each other in a bloody quagmire of a war that still rages to this very day with the great powers of the world deeply involved as they attempt to back up their preferred proxies and gain more influence in this strategic part of the world.

Major Global Alliances

The Golden Circle: A military and economic alliance built by and centered around the UASC. It consists of nations in the greater Columbian sphere of influence dating all the way back to the time of Columbian expansion in the 19'th and early 20'th centuries. While the Golden Circle is seen across the world as the premier bastion of democracy and freedom in the world, it cannot be denied that the UASC is the unquestioned, dominating leader of the Golden Circle and the alliance is often simply seen as an extension of the United American States themselves, given the vast level of economic and political influence that Columbia has over the member-states. The membership of the Golden Circle consists of Columbia, New Hibernia, Nordbight, Mexico, Cuba, Hispaniola, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Gran Colombia, Ecuador, Liberia and the Philippines.

The Entente Cordiale: A military and economic alliance centered on the United Anglois Kingdom, the German Empire and the Kingdom of Italy along with other Western European nations and former European colonies. It began as an Anglois-German-Italian alliance opposed to the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires which it fought in the First Great War but now it is mostly aimed against the Soviet Union and Comintern which it fought in the Second Great War. The EC is largely made up of the constitutional monarchies and democracies in Europe alongside a number of democratic ex-colonies in Africa. The EC consists of Anglois, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Brittany, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Herzeg-Bosnia, Albania, Greece, Australasia, Senegal, Mali, Dendi, Damagaram, Dahomey, Yorubaland, Biafra, Sokoto, Azawad, Chad, Ouaddi, Ubangi, Ovamboland and Madagascar.

COMINTERN: A military and economic alliance built by and centered around the Soviet Union to defend and progress the communist revolution, it stands against it's western rival the Entente ever since the two alliances fought the Second Great War which broke out as the Comintern attempted to intervene in the German Civil War in 1940, tensions between the two alliances have somewhat eased with the passage of decades but still very much remain. The Comintern is heavily dominated by the Soviet Union and all of it's member-states are governed by a communist regime, indeed, having an authoritarian left-wing government is a requirement for joining the alliance. Many people simply consider the COMINTERN to be an extension of the Soviet Union, especially given the various integration deals signed between its members. It's members are the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kurdistan, Turkestan, Mongolia, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Shanghai Cooperation Organization: A military and economic alliance built by and centered around China. While various powers quickly began trying to court China after the end of the Pacific War and the subsequent Sino-Columbian Split, an embittered, depressed Chiang spurned them all. The peace deal ending the war in the Pacific was seen as a grave betrayal by Chiang Kai-Shek, who was now more suspicious than ever of foreign powers that had long subjugated China by unfair treaties and forced concessions. The result of this policy was the eventual formation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization after the fall of the Dai Li regime. Given that China is the worlds largest economy measured by purchasing power parity, the member-states of the SCO have largely been completely sucked into China's economic orbit. The members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization are China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Pakistan.

The Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere: The GEACPS is the final, ailing remnant of the once expansive Showa Japanese Empire that exploded out across the Asia-Pacific region before falling to the overwhelming Columbian onslaught. The GEACPS only has three members which are essentially projections of Japan itself with their governments run by corrupt pro-Japanese politicians. The Co-Prosperity Sphere is deeply unstable and riots among the non-Japanese majority populations in the protectorates are growing in frequency, scale and intensity. Only a truly remarkable Japanese leader could make sure that the GEACPS survives the decade. It's only members are the Empire of Japan and the Protected Republic of Korea.

When combined, Slavic peoples make up 82 % of the population, Turkic peoples such as the Tartars and Azeris make up 8% and the remaining 10% being a large amalgamation of various groups such as Baltic, Finnic and various Native Siberian peoples like the Chukchi, Buryats, Yakuts along with North/South Caucasian peoples like Georgians, Circassians, Chechens, Ossetians, Avars and so on. Major cities in the USSR like Moscow and Leningrad and cities that are home to various special economic zones like Odessa, Rostov, Riga and Vladivostok are relatively diverse as people from various parts of the USSR and from various Comintern states have migrated there in pursuit of professional and educational opportunities in the last few decades.

Military Branches - Red Army Ground Forces / Red Army Navy / Red Army Airforce / Red Army Strategic Rocket Force
Total military size - 3 205 000 Active Troops / 1 800 000 Reserves.

The Soviet Red Army Ground Forces are structured around the District Command - Division - Brigade structure after the 2003 Soviet Military reforms, moving away from the old Front - Division - Regiment system to a more flexible organization, especially in it's abandonment of the single-arm Regiment and it's replacement with the Brigade. Soviet Brigades are 4500-man units with organic full-spectrum combined arms support, featuring artillery, air-defense, engineering support and other service and support units. The Soviet Airborne Forces or VDV consist of 10 divisions who, along with the Red Army Navy Marine Corps form the basis of the USSR's rapid reaction forces for international deployments and power-projection. The VDV is well known for it's mobility, utilizing a range of specialist airborne warfare vehicles and is a fully mechanized force with a larger complement of heavy weaponry than most contemporary airborne forces. Alongside the SRANMC and SRAGF Red Guard divisions, the VDV is made up exclusively of full-time professional soldiers whereas the remainder of the SRA is made up of mixed units where professionals and conscripts serve together side by side.

The Mechanized Division is the most common type of unit in the SRAGF, with the basic organization following below.

SRAGF Mechanized Division
--- 1 Armored Brigade
--- 2 MechInf Brigades
--- Artillery Regiment
--- Air Defense Regiment
--- LOGSUP Regiment
--- C&C HQ Company

2580 Combat Jets
200 Strategic Bombers
620 Transports
455 Trainers
320 Medium/Heavy UAV's

Major foreign military suppliers - The USSR has a large domestic military-industrial complex but has on occasion purchased equipment from other Comintern states, primarily Poland and Czechoslovakia.
Extra military information - In addition to the regular branches of the Soviet Red Army there is the Red Army Strategic Rocket Force. It consists of 120 000 troops who are tasked with operating the Soviet Ballistic Missile arsenal as well as the strategic ABM defenses and aerospace assets such as satellites. The 6 Special Operations Brigades of the Soviet Union are technically not counted as parts of the Soviet Red Army but as parts of the NKVD, falling under the NKVD's Special Operations Directorate. Since 2012, a significant a wide-ranging modernization effort has been undertaken by the USSR. The Soviet Red Army is legally obliged to follow the principle of civilian control of the military, although in practical terms this principle has been implemented in such a way as to ensure the SRA is under the absolute control of the CPSU. Its Commander in Chief is the General Secretary of the Soviet Union. Unsurprisingly, the USSR keeps military bases in the various COMINTERN member-states.

A number of projects that were implemented in this timeline that weren't IRL.
The MiG-33 - developed in the 1980's and 1990's as a complementary combat aircraft to the MiG-29. The MiG-33 is a short-range, point-defense fighter and an ideal fighter for friendly states on a budget.
The SU S-37 - a single-engine, single-seat canard-delta multirole fighter. Intended to combine the ground attack and air-to-air role with an emphasis on the first role. Consequently, it has 18 external hard points.
The Yak-43 is a thing.
The MiG-37 Ferret - Soviet Stealth fighter, predecessor to the SU 57 PAK-FA entering service.
Kamov KA-50 - Tandem-rotor heavy transport helicopter, later developed into the Kamov KA-102, Chinook-equivalent.
The Kherson-class LHD - 5 in service.
The Ulyanovsk-class Carrier - 2 in service.

GDP - 6.05 Trillion USD
Currency - Soviet Ruble
Major import/export partners - China / Columbia / Japan / Comintern States / Various neutral state (Primarily Anatolia and the Scandinavian states)

Public Goals - Engage in sustainable economic growth by developing the domestic economy / Promote International Trade / Develop the Soviet Union into a major world power in science and technology / Improve living standards and reduce economic disparity / Invest in national security and defense / Uphold commitments to Comintern allies.
Private Goals - Support Communist insurgents in Bosnia and the UAR / Crush insurgencies in Kosovo and Turkestan / Limit Chinese inroads into Mongolia, Vietnam and Cambodia / Uphold hegemony over the Comintern / Contain the Entente / Expand Soviet influence in the world
Major Domestic Issues - Widespread corruption in the CPSU / Large economic disparity between different regions / Dilapidated infrastructure in poorer areas / Environmental Degradation
Major Foreign Issues - The Entente / China possibly looking north / Albanian insurgents in Serbian Kosovo and Jihadists in Turkestan / Growing internal unrest in Poland and Romania

History

Formed in 1920 after the fall of the Russian Empire in the fires of the First Great War, emerging as the first Communist state in the world under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. When Lenin died in January 1927 Nikolai Bukharin rose to power in the USSR attempting to cultivate his image as Lenin's legitimate successor. Still, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was split along three major ideological fault-lines left unresolved since Lenin's days and stood divided into the Trotskyist radicals, the Bukharinist conservatives and the Stalinist hardliners. This split resulted in a vicious power-struggle in the Kremlin that lasted for years and paralyzed the Soviet Government. The paralysis ended in 1927 when Nikolai Bukharin managed to strike a deal with the moderate wing of the Stalinists, bringing a number of Stalin's former close associates, primarily Lazar Kaganovich and Vyascheslav Molotov over to his side, perhaps due to them fearing Stalin's growing paranoia. This united Stalinist-Bukharinist wing was powerful enough to seize control of the party and the state. Bukharin then used his control over the NKVD through Yagoda and Yezhov to purge several thousand hardline Stalinists, forcing Stalin to flee the country and leaving for China. A new government emerged, with Nikolai Bukharin as General Secretary and Lazar Kaganovich as Premier at it's head. Other key figures of the Bukharin Regime were Vyascheslav Molotov, Mikhail Kaganovich, Sergei Kirov, Lev Kamenev, Alexey Rykov and Mikhail Tomsky. The government immediately began with re-writing the Soviet Constitution, adding the so-called "Three Pillars of Governance" which literally constitutionalized the rule of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union over the country. Other changes were made as well, such as the re-definition of the Soviet Union from a federal state to a unitary state and the removal of all references to class-struggle from the document, a move seen by later historians as the point of the transformation for the CPSU from a revolutionary vanguard party to a governing party. Borders were also re-drawn. With northern Kazakhstan being annexed directly into the USSR while the rest of the USSR's Central Asian territories were organized into a new state under a Communist puppet-government, seeing the official birth of the Socialist Federal Republic of Turkestan.

The Bukharin Regime invested in the expansion of the Red Army along with adopting the Measured Industrialization Policy, a more limited version of the Five-Year Plan strategy first proposed by Stalin. However a large portion of the government's yearly investment funds remained allocated to Bukharin's grand vision for the USSR, the long-term Siberian Plan. While the Soviet leadership considered traditional Russian village life reactionary and backward, there was no significant support for forced collectivization in the government after Stalin's fall, leading to Lenin's "Lead by Example" policy established under the NEP continuing under Bukharin. Instead, Bukharin's vision of the future Russian countryside was through the construction of new planned villages with more access to modern amenities and melding of local and Party authorities to gradually further the ideology in rural areas. The construction of hundreds upon hundreds of such new planned villages and towns around newly established farms and rail-lines in the West Siberian Czernozem Belt, North Kazakh Czernozem Belt and the Siberian Chestnut Soil Belt between the Ob river and Lake Baikal was the greatest undertaking in the USSR between roughly 1930 and 1940. The construction of these settlements and new farms resulted in a significant increase in land-cultivation and food production while easing the rural overpopulation issues in the Soviet heartland west of the Urals. At the same time, many of the important heavy industry investments made under first Five-Year Plan were made east of the Urals as a complement to the Siberian Plan, such as the construction of Magnitogorsk, the development of mining and steel production in the Kuzbass and the Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Novosibirsk Tractor Factories built on the model of the Volgograd Tractor Factory. Soviet cities grew and saw the flourishing of the Socialist Classicist style championed by Stalin and continuing under Bukharin. One of the most lasting and drastic effects of the Siberian Plan resulted in the wide-ranging Russification and Slavization of Northern Kazakhstan. Much of the indigenous Kazakhs who would not abandon it's semi-nomadic herding lifestyle was often deported, either into reservations or to Uzbek-dominated Turkestan. The Siberian Plan did however turn Western Siberia, South-Central Siberia and the Circumbaikal into secondary Russian heartlands.

As the shockwaves of the Berlin Stock Market Crash hit the Soviet Union. Trotsky saw the crisis as evidence that Capitalism was collapsing and now was the time to spearhead the World Revolution. Initially dismissive of the criticism, Bukharin disregarded it but as the government's opponents grew bolder and their criticism grew more fervent, Bukharin struck back, perhaps encouraged by Kaganovich and Kirov which led to the Soviet Purges beginning in 1937. Trotsky himself fled the country into exile in China alongside Stalin. His closest allies, including Zinoviev and Kamenev were sentenced for conspiring with Trotsky to overthrow the government while Trotsky himself was sentenced to death in absentia. The remaining Stalinists who had not come over to the Bukharinist wing were also faced with repressions such as expulsion from the Party while Bulganin and a few of the most prominent Stalinist dissidents were sentenced to prison. While initially limited, the Purges later spread which led to thousands of Party members and civil servants deemed "unreliable" as well as tens of thousands of ordinary people being arrested and sentenced to hard labor in the NKVD's "Corrective Labor Camps", more commonly known as Gulags. At the same time the USSR exploited the unrest in the wake of the Great Depression to extend it's influence in Europe, bringing Poland and Romania into the Comintern after the countries fell to communist revolutions while supporting communist forces in the German Civil War. In 1939 the Soviet Union started flexing it's military muscles with the invasion of Finland and subsequent Winter War which, while ending in Soviet victory, did so only after the Red Army suffered an embarrassing amount of casualties against a much smaller enemy, Bukharin, outraged, purged almost 3000 Soviet officers, including Voroshilov who initially commanded the forces invading Finland. In 1940, the Soviet Union was pulled into the Second Great War in 1940 when Polish leader Boleslaw Bierut finally managed to convince Bukharin to support and intervention in the German Civil War as communist forces seemed on the verge of defeat. The Second Great War would last until 1945 and lead to a remarkably fast development of the Soviet military-industrial complex. The T-34 and GZ (KV) and NB (IS) tanks made a name for themselves during the heavy fighting, but in the end, the Second Great War produced no clear victor. Still, many considered it a Comintern victory. While failing to install Paul Levi's communists in Berlin, Poland expanded significantly, Czechoslovakia was formed and a communist regime was forcibly installed in Bulgaria. During the immediate post-war period, the Soviet Union once more focused it's resources toward domestic development, but also military development as lingering tensions in Europe between the Comintern and Entente remained high and both sides expected another, decisive conflict to erupt in a few years time. At this time, as Columbia ended it's involvement in the Pacific War the Chinese called on the USSR for aid in finally subduing Japan, the threat of Soviet intervention led to the Japanese Empire finally surrendering and ceding all territories in China back to the KMT-led Chinese government.

Continuation of the Siberian Plan and Measured Industrialization Plan alongside increasing trade with the Comintern, China and Columbia expanded the Soviet economy while Soviet cities grew. This post-war economic boom saw the building of many of the Soviet landmarks now known across the world, perhaps most famously the Revolutionary Father Lenin statue in Leningrad alongside the Palace of Soviets and Victory Arch in Moscow. After Nikolai Bukharin's death in 1958, Nikita Khrushchev, former NKVD frontline Commissar and among the distinguished soldiers who fought in the Battle of Breslau rose to power as General Secretary of the Soviet Union, keeping Kaganovich as his Premier, the Khrushchev Regime presided over a period of liberalization in the Soviet Union. The Special Tribunals operated by Bukharin Era security agencies were abolished. Under the new reforms, no prosecution for a political crime could be brought even in the regular courts unless approved by the local Party committee. Around 500 000 political prisoners still imprisoned in the Corrective Labor Camps were released and much of the Gulag-system was dismantled. Under Khrushchev a modest amount of liberalization in the arts occurred as well along with liberalization of travel laws. As a result, over 700 000 Soviets traveled as tourists abroad in 1963 alone. The most significant change would be economic however. Appointing Alexei Kosygin as People's Minister of Development alongside Khrushchev's focus on what he would call the "Four Areas of Progress", namely those of agriculture, industry, science and technology, and the military. Khrushchev saw this as the continuation of Marxist-Leninist-Bukharinist State Capitalist model. Holding to the idea that that the duty of the Party was to perfect what Khrushchev called "Socialism adapted to Soviet Realities". The Khrushchev Regime enacted a number of economic reforms, liberalizing the economy and privatizing a number of large state-owned monopolies while investing in industry and agriculture alike. Khrushchev would enact the Farmers Market Initiative as an extension of Lenin's Lead by Example strategy. The Farmers Market Initiative led to significant growth in agricultural production, rural incomes and a sharp reduction in rural poverty as farmer's saw their private plots expanded while the last price-controls on foodstuffs were abolished along with a sharp reduction in production quotas, allowing farmers and kholkhozes to sell their surplus at fully free prices. Khrushchev's time in power also saw the Sino-Soviet split over divergent ideologies and an impasse on the status of Mongolia. Mounting tensions would finally lead to the Vietnam War after the newly formed Communist state in Vietnam refused to sign a wide-ranging integration agreement with the RoC, leading to the Vietnam War where the USSR supported Ho Chi Minh's VPA against the Chinese, forcing them to retreat from the country along with the fast-track admission of Vietnam and Cambodia into the Comintern after the war, deepening the rift between the USSR and China.

In 1971, Khrushchev would die and was replaced by the "Eternal Premier" Lazar Kaganovich, who now rose to take Khrushchev's place as General Secretary. The Kaganovich regime reintroduced state control in some sectors of the economy that were relaxed under the Khrushchev Regime and was also deeply conservative with political reforms. Still, Kaganovich did not abandon the previous economic policies of his predecessors entirely and presided over more than a decade of consistent economic growth and development. Kaganovich sought to improve socio-economic equality domestically, aiming to build what he called a "Harmonious Socialist Society" that was prosperous and free of social strife. Under his leadership Soviet authorities cracked down hard on social disturbances, ethnic minority protests, and harshly repressed dissident figures. In foreign policy, Kaganovich did promote East-West trade, helped by efforts to de-escalate tensions in Europe and open greater trade-ties with the Entente and particularly with Columbia as well as supporting nuclear arms regulation. He was however also uncompromising when it came to upholding Soviet influence and Communist governments in the wider world. This eventually led to the Kaganovich Regime being responsible for bogging the Soviet Union down in the quagmire that was the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan between between 1973 and 1981 in order to prop up the failing communist regime ruling the country as Kaganovich feared the possibility of an Salafist fundamentalist regime being established that would expand to export radical Islam into the People's Federation of Turkestan right on the Soviet doorstep. With the final fall of the Afghan communist regime in 1981, Kaganovich did the unexpected and resigned from all his official positions, living a quiet life in Yalta until he died in 1991, the last of the Old Bolsheviks to pass away.

Rising to power after Kaganovich was a young up-and-coming refomer, Mikhail Gorbachev who proceeded to liberalize the economy, arts and media as well as passing a number of social reforms while continuing to pour money into the special economic zones established by Khrushchev. While seeing significant economic growth, specially in some areas of the country, Gorbachev is most credited with mending ties with China after Dai Li's death as well as embarking on a large modernization effort of the Soviet Red Army in the wake of the Afghanistan War. However, Gorbachev was later replaced by Alexander Rutskoy in 1996 after retiring under pressure from a growing wing of the CPSU who deemed that his reforms had been far too wide-ranging and were upset at his handling of the Yugoslav War. As Gorbachev retired, Rutskoy inherited a Soviet Union rampant with political corruption and regional wealth gaps. Stock markets fluctuated greatly in the wake of Gorbachev's reforms and little was being done to address an ever-increasing urban-rural wealth gap. Official reports put the figure on the percentage of Soviet GDP being moved and abused by corrupt officials at around 10%, a chaotic environment of illegal bonds issued by civil and military officials resulted in much of the corrupted wealth vanishing and then reappearing in foreign tax-havens. Organized crime in the form of the Russian Mafia re-emerged and began to plague major cities while a careless stance on the destruction of the environment furthered concerns voiced by some intellectuals. Rutskoy's biggest aim in the economy was stability, and he believed that a stable government with highly centralized power would be a prerequisite. He reintroduced state control in some sectors of the economy that were relaxed by the previous administration, and rolled back a number of Gorbachev's political reforms while proceeding to enlarge and extend the NKVD to fight organized crime and corruption while embarking on a comprehensive reform program for the Soviet Red Army based on it's experiences fighting alongside the Columbians since the 2001 Columbian Invasion of Afghanistan. Rutskoy also made his own contribution to the ideology of Soviet Communism with the Inner Development Outlook, a response to what he saw as the "moral degeneration and money-grubbing" of Soviet society under Gorbachev. The Inner Development Outlook stressed the improvement of the people's "ideological and moral quality", "scientific and cultural quality" and health quality.

Rutskoy stepped down and was replaced by Gennady Zyuganov in 2012. Since assuming power, Zyuganov has introduced far-ranging measures to enforce party discipline and impose internal unity while strengthening censorship, including censorship of the internet within the USSR. The Zyuganov regime has been criticized for this increase of censorship and mass surveillance in the Soviet Union and the cult of personality he constructed around himself since entering office with books, cartoons, pop songs and even dance routines honoring his rule. The village of Mymrino - Oryol Oblast where Zyuganov was born has become a "modern-day shrine" decorated with Communist propaganda and murals extolling the formative years of his life. Since 2013, the CPSU has created two "Central Commissariats" under Zyuganov's leadership, namely the Central Commissariat of Internet Security and Informatization and Central Commissariat of Defense and Security Affairs which has let Zyuganov consolidate a great deal of personal control over national security and digital affairs. Zyuganov has been voicing support for the USSR's state-owned enterprises while also supporting the country's private sector since entering office. Under his regime it has made it easier for banks to issue mortgages, foreign participation in the bond market has been increased while the USSR works to increase the rubles global role. Security and defense have been significant areas of investment for the Zyuganov regime. He announced a reduction of 650 000 troops from the SRA in 2015 bringing it down to it's current size. Zyuganov described this as a gesture of peace, while foreign analysts still noted an increase in military spending and said that the cut was done to reduce wage and maintenance costs to free up more funds to more rapidly and comprehensively modernize the SRA. Zyuganov has delivered numerous high-profile pronouncements aiming to build a more effective fighting force in addition greatly emphasizing the principle of "the party has absolute control over the army".

Reserving Greece. Just two questions: A) since there was no Ottoman occupation, Greeks revolted against Latin overlords? B) What happened to the Empire of Trebizond? Is it still a thing (I see a state matching their borders on the map)?

A: Yes, the exact specifics would be up to the greek player but I could see a battle against some combination of Venetian/Sicilian/Anatolians, maybe even the Bulgarians at some point.

B: Yepyep Trebizond still exists :)

Thinking of reserving China though I'm not so sure of its current history, especially when the (USA) is throwing in the towel despite Pearl Harbor still happening. Not only that, a complete 180 attitude towards Japan would be political suicide for Roosevelt's presidency and his party. Not only that, if there's one nation that Japan fears more than the US, it was the USSR. If Columbia won't finish off Japan, Chiang Kai Shek would try to approach the Soviets to finish the job and invade Korea in return for China falling under Soviet orbit.

Can I have a Latin Greece, that gradually becomes increasingly Hellenized? (Latins adopting Greek language and overseeing a Byzantine Catholic Church). So instead of revolt, there is a nativization of Latin Greece.

As I said, the backstory isn't 100% set in stone. I based the !USA throwing in the towel on the high Columbian casualties of the invasion of the Home Islands turning the public against the Roosevelt administration. As the US wouldn't be bothered in Europe it would have fought it's way to the Home Islands earlier, and with no nukes to force a surrender without an amphibious invasion, leading a very costly invasion in turn leading to the peace treaty in the Pacific as the Columbian public got fed up with the numbers of casualties. Though if you have an interesting proposal, I'm open to hearing it :)

Nationstates Name Sao Nova Europa
Nation Name Kingdom of Greece (Βασίλειο της Ελλάδας)
Capital Athens
Type of Government Constitutional Monarchy

Central Government:

The head of state is the King of Greece, Pavlos III. The King has broader powers compared to most constitutional monarchies. The overall political responsibility for intelligence is vested in him, and he has exclusive power to: co-ordinate intelligence policies, determine the financial resources and strengthening national cyber security; apply and protect State secrets; authorize agents to carry out operations, in Greece or abroad, in violation of the law. The King also appoints many of the members of the House of Lords. The King has veto powers, but it can be overturned by a two-thirds majority of joint session of Parliament.

The head of government is the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister and the cabinet are appointed by the King and must pass a vote of confidence in House of Representatives to come into office. Usually the Prime Minister of Greece belongs to the largest party in parliament, as Greece has a two-party system and rarely a single party fails to win a majority.

Parliament:

The Greek Parliament is tricameral. The lower house is the House of Representatives. The 500 Representatives are elected every four years using a closed party list proportional representation electoral system, with an electoral threshold of 5%. Representatives are meant to represent the interests of the nation as a whole rather than regional interests. Governments need a vote of confidence from the House of Representatives to come into office. In case no government can be formed, the House can be dissolved by the King and early elections can be called.

The middle house is the Senate. The 200 Senators are elected every six years in single-member electoral districts using a First-Past-the-Post system. Senators are meant to represent directly their constituents and are encouraged to look out for their regional interests, especially if their region tends to get overlooked by the central government. As such, they are less inclined to follow strict party discipline compared to their colleagues in the House of Representatives.

The upper house is the House of Lords. It is comprised of: the adult Princes of the Royal Family, former Prime Ministers, 50 scientists, professors, athletes, former public officials or otherwise exceptional individuals appointed by the King, the 205 Bishops of the Church of Greece, and 40 representatives of social, economic and professional interest groups (10 representatives of non-commercial activities, 10 representatives of employers, 10 of employees and 10 representatives of farmers, crafts, trades and independent professionals: they are elected through indirect elections within the interest organizations or local communities, divided into constituencies). They are meant to act as a sobering, second thought to balance the other two directly elected houses. The members of the House are also prohibited from being active members of a political party, as they are meant to be non-partisan. The House of Lords currently has 301 members.

For a bill to be approved, it needs to be voted by a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and 1/3 of the House of Lords. However, a government depends on the vote of confidence of only the House of Representatives, with the Senate and the House of Lords not being able to affect the government formation process. Nevertheless, Prime Ministers negotiate with the Senate and the House of Lords to ensure their legislative agenda is approved.

Local Government:

Greece is divided into 15 Prefectures. Each Prefecture is lead by a directly-elected (every five years with a FPTP system) Prefect and a Prefectural Council (with 60 MPs elected every three years in single-member electoral districts with a FPTP system). Prefectures have broad autonomy in property taxation (whose revenues they solely use and fund most of the prefectural government), local taxes they may wish to impose, local infrastructure, youth welfare initiatives, regional welfare/economic programs (funded by the prefectural governments), education and cultural (including athletic) activities. Mount Athos is governed as an autonomous monastic polity. The community consists of 20 main monasteries which constitute the Holy Community.

Below the prefectures are the municipalities, governed by a council made up of 7 to 11 members and led by a President. They have limited autonomy compared to prefectures, as most of their funding comes from prefectures. Their autonomy consists mostly around cultural, environmental and youth issues.

Political Parties:

Greece has a two-party system. The two major parties that alternate in power are the National Radical Union (ERE) and the Liberal Party (KF).

ERE - center-right to right-wing - Greek nationalism, monarchism, national conservatism, economic liberalism, anti-immigration, right-wing populism, religious right, right-libertarianism.

ERE is the major party of the Greek right. It aims to represent right-wing populists, national conservatives, Christian democrats, liberal conservatives and classical liberals. As such, it operates as a big tent that encompasses politicians ranging from the moderate center-right to the far right. It generally supports lower taxes, privatizations and smaller government. On social issues, it stands opposed to abortion rights and same-sex marriage, has a hardline stance against illegal immigration, supports tough on crime policies and wants to bolster military spending.

KF - center-left to center - Social liberalism, progressivism, feminism, secularism, environmentalism, youth politics.

KF is the major party of the Greek center-left. It is a social liberal party that acts as a big tent, bringing together moderate liberals, green activists and social democrats. On economics it has a rather moderate agenda, supporting a more progressive tax system, bolstering educational, healthcare and welfare spending and implementing "pro-workers" economic regulations, but generally allowing a private-sector dominated economy and opposing nationalizations. They also support large-scale investments in renewable energy. On social issues, they support strict environmental regulations, loosening abortion laws, legalizing same-sex marriage and recreative marijuana, and having a softer stance on immigration.

History

After the collapse of the central government of the Byzantine Empire in 1204, the crusaders descended upon Greece. In the Peloponnese, the resistance was led by Leo Sgouros (a local Byzantine magnate), who managed to hold off the Latin advance and secure an independent Greek state in the Peloponnesus. The crusaders did however manage to establish the Duchy of Athens, the Kingdom of Thessalonica and the Duchy of Archipelago as vassal states to the Latin Empire.

For the next hundred years, the Duchy of Athens and the Principality of Peloponnesus (as the state that Leo Sgouros founded came to be known) clashed, with little change in the borders. 1308, the Duchy of Athens passed to Walter V of Brienne. Walter hired the Catalan Company, a group of mercenaries founded by Roger de Flor, to fight against the Principality of Peloponnesus. The expedition was a failure and when Walter tried to renege on his agreement with the mercenaries, they overthrew him and took control of the Dutchy.

Alexandros Sgouros, Prince of Peloponnesus, found the chance to invade and conquer the Duchy, extending his control over Central Greece. A combined expedition by the Latin Empire and the Kingdom of Anatolia to push back Alexandros failed, with the Latin Emperor being captured. In order for the Emperor to be returned safely, the Greeks demanded the Duchy of Archipelago. The Emperor agreed, and he returned to Constantinople humiliated. This meant that the Kingdom of Anatolia surpassed in power and prestige the Latin Empire as the predominant Latin Kingdom in the Greek East.

Along with those military developments, there was a revival of a Hellenic identity. The process can be most clearly traced through the speeches that were delivered on special occasions at the princely court of Peloponnesus. In stark contrast to previous practice, some orators now took to referring to the Byzantines not as ‘Romans’ but as ‘Hellenes’, a word that in the past would have had the connotation of ‘pagans’. This was probably a direct riposte to the Latin seizure of Constantinople and the claim that this victory demonstrated Western superiority. On the contrary, as heirs of the ancient Greeks, whose language they spoke, the Byzantines had inherited a sophistication and culture of which the Latins knew nothing.

The most prominent proponent of a revival of Hellenism was George Gemistos Plethon (1355/1360 – 1452/1454), who viewed Neoplatonism as a theological and political alternative to Christianity. He rejected Roman universalism in favor of creating a purely Hellenic state centered on the Peloponnese and Central Greece. He proposed a series of reforms to then Prince Nikolaos II that would see the Principality turned into a centralized monarchy, protected by a professional army of Greek soldiers and supported by the taxpayers (Helots). His ideas were inspired by Plato’s Republic.

Prince Nikoalos II (1395 - 1432) accepted part of those proposals, weakening the powers of the landed nobility and centralizing rule in his person in an autocratic manner reminiscent of the Byzantine Empire. After putting down repeated revolts by landed magnates, he confiscated their lands and distributed them to farmer-soldiers, who would have maintain military equipment and enlist in the military when needed. This system was inspired by the old Themata.

Prince Nikolaos in 1421 moved the capital of his principality to Athens - a symbolic move since Athens wasn't the largest city in his lands - and declared himself Basileus of the Hellenes. This was a direct repudiation of the Roman ideology - now confined to the Empire of Trebizond - and an official embrace by the state of the emerging Hellenic movement. Nikolaos though rejected the Neoplatonism of Plethon and presented himself as a faithful Orthodox ruler. In another highly symbolic move, in 1425 he declared the Archbishop of Athens as the new 'Ecumenical Patriarch' and head of the Orthodox Church. This would allow him to project himself as the protector of Orthodoxy.

In the 1400s and 1500s, the Kingdom of Greece would experience economic growth as commercial activity flourished and so did trade. Relations between the Kingdom and the Latins were stable. There were the occasional military conflicts - most of them inconclusive - but neither side attempted to exterminate the other. In 1540, the Latin Duchy of Thessalonica witnessed its greatest catastrophe, as the Duke was defeated by the Bulgarians. The Duke and most of the nobles were massacred. As the Kingdom of Anatolia and the Latin Empire were busy in a war against the Mamluks, the remaining nobles of Thessalonica asked the King of Greece - Manuel IV - for assistance. Manuel obliged and a combined force of Greeks and Latins pushed back the Bulgarians. But the Greek soldiers did not retreat back to their kingdom after their victory. Instead, they occupied the Duchy and annexed it directly into Greece.

Meanwhile, in the West, another Greek state had emerged: the Despotate of Epirus. Epirus had been under the rule of the Komnenos Doukas family and had Roman imperial pretensions. Having to face constant danger from the Normans in Italy, however, it had been unable to intervene in the affairs of the rest of Greece. At that time, the Despotate was ruled by Despotissa Helena. As she faced an invasion by the Count Palatine of Cephalonia and Zakynthos, she asked for Manuel's assistance. In exchange, she would marry him and the two Greek states would merge in a personal union. Manuel accepted and Greek troops repelled the invasion of the Count.

In 1601, Greek troops ended the County Palatine by taking over the Ionian Islands. The Kingdom of Greece also fought a number of wars against Venice in the 1600s, eventually emerging victorious. By the 1700s, Greece was a reasonably prosperous and somewhat centralized European kingdom in the periphery of the Western world. Greece saw the revival of classical liberal ideals at that time, in what is known as the Greek Enlightenment. Inspired by Ancient Greece, Greek scholars would criticize the absolute monarchy and ask for reforms.

In 1741 the catastrophic defeat of Greece in a war against Anatolia and Venice led to widespread civil unrest and provincial revolts. The then King Michael VII convened a national diet in 1745, comprised of nobles, bishops and the richest merchants of the Kingdom. The Constitution of 1745 established the House of Lords as an advisory legislative body. The monarchy was still absolute, but the King would have to consult with the bishops and nobles of the realm.

In 1805 a second convention was held, which created a House of Representatives. Only men who met certain financial criteria would have the right to vote, but it was the first time an elected body participated in the governance of the Kingdom. The office of a Prime Minister was also established. The first Prime Minister of Greece was Spyridon Trikoupis, a reformist politician who represented the 'Athenian Block' (so called because it was influenced by ancient Athens). The opposition was termed the 'Macedonian Block', in reference to the absolute monarchy of ancient Macedonia. The two blocks would alternate in power.

In 1831, Ioannis Kapodistrias of the Macedonian Block came to power as Prime Minister. He sought to claim Crete from Venice, as he viewed it as rightful Greek land. He was aided in his quest by the Cretan Revolution that broke out in 1835. Greek regiments landed on the island, and together with the revolutionaries they drove off the Venetians. The next important Greek Prime Minister was Charilaos Trikoupis, of the Athenian Block and son of Spyridon. He was Prime Minister seven times from 1875 until 1895.

Under his premiership, a number of reforms took place. The old titles of nobility were abolished and a land reform redistributed large part of noble lands to the peasants. The House of Lords took its current form while the voting franchise for the House of Representatives was extended to all male Greek citizens. A new chamber, the Senate, was formed. Trikoupis also established the "dedilomeni principle" (αρχή της δεδηλωμένης), the "principle of declared confidence", or confidence vote, obliging the King to appoint the leader of the party with the majority of parliamentary votes in the House of Representatives as the Prime Minister. Trikoupis also modernized the system of taxation, invested heavily in railroad construction and oversaw the construction of the Corinth Canal.

In the Great War, Greece (under the premiership of Eleftherios Venizelos) sided with the Entente in hopes of regaining historic Greek lands from the Latins. After the end of the war, the Turin Accord was signed. Greece was awarded Western Thrace, the islands of the eastern Aegean, Cyprus and Western Asia Minor. The Accord also included a clause of population exchange: Catholics would have to leave the Greek lands and Orthodox would leave the lands of Anatolia. This allowed Greece to ensure religious unity and avoid having a substantial Latin Catholic minority.

In the 1920s, Greece focused on economic development and integrating the newly conquered lands. Latin toponyms were changed to Greek, the land in Western Anatolia was redistributed to the Orthodox refugees who had arrived from the Latin Kingdom, and the first steps towards industrialization were taken. In 1930 however, the Berlin Stock Market Crash brought about a deep global crisis, the Great Depression had come. This saw KKE (Greek Communist Party) make electoral gains. Fearing a communist takeover, the King forced the two major parties (the Liberals, successors to the Athenian Block, and the People's Party, successors to the Macedonian Block) to accept former Lieutenant General and minor nationalist politician Ioannis Metaxas as Prime Minister.

After succeeded in getting a vote of confidence, Metaxas brought the 'Security Bill' into Parliament. The bill would suspend the constitution and the parliament, declare a state of emergency and outlaw communism. The bill was approved and so in 4th August 1936, Metaxas became dictator of Greece. Metaxas passed a series of pro-labor laws (such as banning child labor, five-day, 40-hour workweek, unemployment insurance, guaranteed two-week vacations with pay), created the 'Metaxas Youth' to promote nationalism to the Greek youth and increased military spending. At the same time, he kept Greece neutral and outside of the Second Great War.

In 1944, Metaxas accepted a desperate Entente offer to join the war effort in exchange for considerable financial assistance towards Greece. For the next year, Greeks troops fought and kept substantial communist forces occupied in the Balkans. In May 1945, peace returned to Europe. Greece, with minimal casualties compared to most other European countries, benefited from the promised financial assistance. This led to the Greek Economic Miracle, a period between 1947 and 1980 which saw an annual rate of growth as high as 8%.

In 1948, Metaxas died and was succeeded by Alexandros Papagos (1948 - 1955) and Konstantinos Karamanlis (1955 - 1967) as Prime Ministers and dictators of Greece. Under Papagos and Karamanlis, Greece cooperated closely with the Entente and the border with Bulgaria became highly militarized. Domestically, censorship was relaxed and the regime liberalized, though neither elections were held nor the parliament was restored. The increased prosperity and the creation of a broad middle class led to demands for political freedoms. This culminated in the 1967 Athens protests. Karamanlis, a reformist conservative, wanted to use this uprising as an excuse to reform the regime and transition to democracy but he was overthrown by the Colonels' Coup, led by Georgios Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos crushed the Athens protests with brute force, sending tanks and troops to shoot civilians. He also stated that the Greek State would return back to its Metaxist roots. He reestablished Metaxist-era censorship and created the 'Nationalist Union', a political party that would mobilize the masses behind the regime. Propaganda intensified and so did terror against perceived liberals and communists. This led to criticism of Greece by other, more democratic, Entente members but Greece was too valuable to the alliance to be censured.

The 'National State' of Papadopoulos, which grew ever more repressive and illiberal (in the process alienating moderate nationalist officers and conservative public officials), would come to an end in 1977. A student uprising in Athens, to which Papadopoulos responded by sending armed troops to crush it, backfired when the King publicly condemned Papadopoulos' response. Even worse, the troops sent to crush the revolt refused to obey the orders. Papadopoulos, face with the possibility of civil war, resigned.

He was succeeded by Konstantinos Karamanlis, who returned from his self-imposed exile in the Anglois Kingdom. He called a constitutional convention, which established the current constitution. He also founded the 'National Radical Union' (ERE). Although ERE presented itself as a new, liberal conservative right, it also incorporated most Metaxist officials. In the 1978 elections, ERE won an absolute majority. It would rule Greece under Karamanlis (1978 - 1989) and Miltiades Evert (1989 - 1997). During this time, Greek society liberalized. Higher public education was made free of any charge, the energy sector was privatized and military spending was bolstered.

This long dominance of ERE was the result of the disarray of the Greek left. In 1995, under liberal politician Konstantinos Mitsotakis, liberal centrists and center-left social democrats established the Liberal Party (KF). KF won the 1997 elections. Mitsotakis was a classical liberal. He legalized abortion, divorce and civil marriage while cutting taxes and maintaining much of the economic agenda of ERE. In 2001, he was succeeded by Simitis, who belonged to the social democratic wing of KF. Although Simitis won the 2001 elections with a smaller majority than Mitsotakis, he managed to get through parliament the creation of the Greek National Healthcare System. He also raised pensions and unemployment subsidies.

In 2005, ERE won a majority in the House of Representatives under Stephanos Manos. A libertarian conservative, he drastically reduced the tax burden by replacing the progressive income tax with a flat 15% income tax. He also reduced public spending and instituted a rule of hiring 1 public employee for every 2 that would retire, in order to downsize the Greek public sector. In 2009, ERE won again a majority. In the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis, Manos implemented an austerity program. As Greece had sound finances due to fiscal discipline in the past years, it did not suffer as much as other European state, and in 2011 returned to growth. In 2012, ERE won again another majority in parliament, this time under Antonis Samaras as Stephanos Manos had chosen to retire.

Samaras pursued a more nationalistic agenda. He bolstered military spending, increased police patrols and implemented a tough anti-immigrant agenda of deportations and pushbacks at sea, especially in the aftermath of UAR's collapse. ERE moved to the right, embracing a right-wing populist identity. In 2016, it won a fourth consecutive majority. The combination of tough on crime policies and hardline stance on immigration had proved immensely popular, but a series of corruption scandals eroded the trust of the public and forced an early election for the House of Representatives in 2018. Even with the corruption scandals, ERE got nearly 45% of the vote, but KF returned in power with 51% of the vote.

Under George Papandreou, the Liberals relaxed border control and increased public spending for healthcare and education. They also raised corporate taxation from 20% to 25% to fund their agenda. But their attempts to legalize same-sex marriage and recreational marijuana failed in the Senate and the House of Lords. In 2019, the slim majority of the Liberals evaporated as more conservative-minded liberals defected to ERE while a few left-wing populists became independent as they were frustrated with Papandreou's perceived centrist agenda.

The King dissolved the House of Representatives and called for early elections. ERE was prepared for them. In the aftermath of their defeat in 2018, they had replaced Samaras with Bogdanos, a younger and even more nationalistic and populist leader belonging to the so called "New Right" wing of the party. This wing of the party combined radical libertarian ideas in economics with ultranationalism, a hardline anti-immigrant agenda and anti-liberalism. ERE won a majority in the 2019 elections and returned to power, less than a year after losing power.

Its gonna be a long list of changes for what I envisioned but to start off, I'm thinking of Dai Li securing power after Chiang's death but instead of just purging the Left-wing KMT, he hijacks the communist movement since communism is still popular in China and essentially adopts a Nazbol ideology.

Union Princes wrote:Its gonna be a long list of changes for what I envisioned but to start off, I'm thinking of Dai Li securing power after Chiang's death but instead of just purging the Left-wing KMT, he hijacks the communist movement since communism is still popular in China and essentially adopts a Nazbol ideology.

Nazbol Li? Okay I can see that happening, though he'd probably still get rid of Wang and Mao right?

I'm skeptical regarding close Sino-Soviet relations though, China being close to the Comintern would weigh the global situation a bit much.

History -

The Birth of the Republic - Before the 2nd Sino-Japanese War, the country that stood the highest chance to unite China was the Republic of China under the Kuomintang. At first, it was a centrist political umbrella movement encompassing both right and left-wing camps allowing it to make ties with the Columbia, the Entente, and the Soviet Union. Founded by Sun Yet-Sen and succeeded by Chiang Kai-Shek, the KMT sought to reunite China from the feuding warlords. Tibet was the last nation to submit to KMT rule in January of 1937 after the leader was intimidated by the massive NRA presence on his border. Because the ROC was the largest contender for legitimacy and the KMT had many socialist and communist elements, it became a hotspot for Russian Bolsheviks who were expelled from the Bolshevik Party after Bukharin succeeded Lenin. One such Bolshevik was Leon Trotsky, a bookworm and experienced military man, and Joseph Stalin, a once-rising star within the Soviet Union.

Because of the budding friendship with Trotsky and the patronage of left-leaning literature and art, Chiang Kai-Shek earned himself the nickname “Red Protector” despite being a traditionalist with no patience for communist dogma. While the Sino-German Agreement did produce German equipment and training to the fledgling NRA, it was Leon Trotsky who completely reinvented the KMT army into a truly fearsome force to be reckoned with. Stalin, in comparison, was quickly aligned with Dai Li, despite the latter being an admirer of Prussian militarism, before being recruited as an agent of the Juntong.

The unexpected happened as Chiang Kai-Shek purged the right-wing elements of the KMT in the middle of a Northern Expedition to subjugate Ma Clique. No one could decisively pinpoint the exact reason as Chiang wasn’t a communist devotee himself. Indeed, Western scholars debated that the opposite was supposed to happen while Chinese scholars explained that it was Chiang’s close friendships with Mao and Trotsky against the distant relationship with the Right Wing KMT members that forced the purge to secure Chiang’s own power. Whatever the case, Red Terror descended the streets as communists and socialists targeted Chinese who had fascist sympathies. Estimated 30,000 Chinese were executed for their monarchist or "unpatriotic" views.

The most notable person spared from the purge was Dai Li, much to the horror of Mao Zedong. Mao incidentally warned Chiang that “Dai Li would use our colors to paint fascism red!” and pleaded with him to purge Dai Lee as well. However, Chiang refused as the “Chinese Yagoda” proved himself invaluable to the KMT due to his extensive spy network throughout China, going as far as Korea and Taiwan. With the unexpected death of Kang Sheng, it was only a matter of time before Mao’s words be proven true.

By 1937, the ROC had already gained an international reputation as a “red” state pitted against an ultra-militarist nation of Japan. The Eight Years of Resistance, as taught in Chinese schools, was harsh, brutal, and grueling as tens of millions of Chinese soldiers and civilians died to the Samurai. But at the darkest hour did the KMT shine its brightest as the labor of Dai Lee, Mao Zedong, and Leon Trotsky borne fruit. Even when Japan had superior technology, it did not have the manpower to fully conquer China and so it engaged in an unwinnable war of attrition as the constant harassment of communist guerrillas made sure that Japan bled for every piece of land taken.

When Columbia brought war to Japan in 1941, the ROC finally took the initiative and launched a massive offensive to liberate as much territory as possible. The NRA finally overran the worn-down Japanese soldiers and marched all the way to Manchuria. Despite Japan insisting on a fight, having been inspired by Columbia bowing out of the war in 1944, their navy was summarily sunk to the bottom of the Pacific, and their army completely destroyed in China. The threat of Soviet intervention eventually force Japan to face reality and accept defeat.

Aall Chinese territory occupied by Japan, such as Taiwan, was returned.

The Gang of Four - After Chiang's untimely passing in 1947, with many Chinese communists blaming Columbia or the Entente for foul play, the KMT was deeply divided between the rival cliques. Not wanting to bring ruin to their hard-won nation, Mao Zedong, Dai Li, Wang Jingwei, and T.V. Soong joined together to form a government, though outwardly united they secretly sought to undermine each other. The Gang of Four's first step was drawing closer relations with the Soviet Union, relying on Russian industrial expertise and equipment to rebuild and revitalize China, although Dai Li suggested requesting Columbian support as well. But given the cold relationship the Chinese and the Columbians had with each other, it was foolish for now.

Of all the ambitions the four men had against each other, Dai Li proved to be the most ruthless, and by the end of 1948, he eventually seize control. Mao Zedong, Wang Jingwei, and T.V. Soong were soon executed in what would be called the "Trial of Fifty-Five." The Soviet Union looked on with mild amusement as some of the most ardent communists got purged for "reactionary thought" and "secret collaboration with the Japanese." Dai Li, using this maneuver, earned the ROC membership into the Comintern, granting him even more material and money to build his vision of China.

The Chinese Yagoda - Whether or not, Moscow knew of Dai Li's true ideology, it became rather clear that his brand of communism was completely unorthodox to Bukharinism. The Cultural Revolution would see many artifacts of Imperial China taken down and placed into state museums instead of burned as Dai Li saw himself fulfilling Chiang's traditionalist views. Tens of millions of Chinese peasants were affected by the rapid industrialization of Dai Li's Five Year Plan but to the Red Emperor, it was acceptable loss to bring China into the forefront. The Juntong became omnipresent during his reign, cracking down on dissidents with frightening efficiency, surpassing even the NKVD in Russia while Dai Li pushed hard to create his army with a state.

Yet, despite Moscow's optimism of Dai Li's China, the cracks were beginning to show in the late 50s as there was a real fear of the ROC surpassing the Soviet Union not just economically but militarily. Chinese militarism saw its army swell much to the alarm of the Soviet high command. The catalyst for the Sino-Soviet Split occurred in 1966 when Dai Li began demanding for Mongolia to return to Chinese rule. The Soviets refused as they grew paranoid of China's power. This prompted Dai Li to formerly withdrew from the Comintern and publically announce a "new brand of socialism" separate from Moscow's orthodoxy. National Socialism, as detailed by Dai Li, was his brand of radical ideology that combined Marxist-Leninist orthodoxy (to appeal to the masses) and ultranationalism (to fulfill his vision of Prussian militarism).

As opposed to destroying Bukharinism, Dai Li was attempting to hijack the communist movement by using his agents to promote National Socialism into communist parties throughout Asia, dividing the communist world even further. Never a believer in Marxism, Dai Li began initiating the second phase of his agenda: the Great Leap Foward.

The House of the Rising Sun - Dai Li's economic reforms of the Great Leap Forward in the late sixties to late seventies would see the country open up to Western Capitalism. He justified the move by promising that Capitalism would end "eventually" and that consorting with Columbia and the Entente was a necessary evil to give China that boost in power. Sure enough, it was. The GDP shot like a rocket as all the foreign investment into Special Economic Sectors saw money pouring in like a waterfall. By the time Dai Li died in 1987, China's economy was quickly catching up to the Soviet's and by 2000, completely surpassing the entire combined wealth of the Comintern. As the 2nd largest economy in the world, China's neighbors would be sucked in by the immense pressure as Laos, Thailand, and Burma fell under the Chinese sphere. Dai Li's successors would publically proclaim this to be evidence that National Socialism was the next step in Communist evolution towards a classless society despite the evidence of class division still apparent.

I suppose? Though most of Greece probably would have been Hellenic, with Latins mostly making up the ruling aristocracy descended from the Crusaders and an urban upper strata of Italian-descended merchants and artisans who lived surrounded by a Greek majority.

Nope, also a bit skeptical about the app, denied in it's current form.

An IC will come when we have at least for major global powers accepted. Seems like that might be pretty soon given we've got a solid China-app in the works as well as reservations for the UASC and German Empire while I'm working on my Soviet app. Also depends on what kind of Brazil we get as that is reserved as well.

It is probably some type of Constitutional Monarchy, it's a founding member of the Entente, it's level of economic development is sort of similar to RL, maybe a bit higher, it's borders differ a bit, as well as demographics possibly. Those being general guidelines, the fine details are up to the possible Italy player, get an app up and let's see what you have in mind :)

An Alternative History of Mirum where the nation was founded much earlier as an empire instead of a republic. Set in 1930s.
As you can probably guess, this is a puppet nation of Mirum. Please, when referring to the nation, use Mirum or the Empire of Mirum.
This nation doesn't represent my views.

Would Facism still have developed there or nah,I’m probably not going to do a fascist Italy I was just curious
