Who is Nuvania's entry for Euclovision 2022?

PIETERSBURG, KANAÄN - For 18 year old Kiana Nariman, music is, and has always been, her life.
"I come from a musical family, but you couldn't tell," she said. "My Mum sings, my aunties sing, my older sister's a singer too."

Despite the wealth of talent, the Nariman family has kept a low profile, preferring instead to express their passion for music with local groups, particularly within the tight knit Pardarian community in Pietersburg, to whom the Narimans belong. Born in Pietersburg in 2004, Kiana is a third generation Pardarian Nuvanian, her grandparents relocated here as refugees during the resettlement program opened up to those displaced by the Solarian War by the government of J.P van Vollenhoven between 1946 and 1949. Since then, the Narimans have been active in the Pardarian community, expressing their love for their culture and for their wider community through music.
"It's really about showing a different side of Nuvania," she said. "Like, you don't see very many of us and so when we perform, it's like, showing off not only our culture, but also showing everyone that we too are Nuvanians and that this is what Nuvania is as well."

Kiana has been singing throughout her schooling, from being part of school choirs in primary school, to solo and group performances at middle school and high school. She's also had starring roles in numerous school plays, so she's not afraid of being centre stage.
"It's something that makes me feel, like, alive, you know?" she said. "Like I always feel something special when I'm performing on stage and, like, everyone's eyes are on me."

She said it was funny because she says that she is not normally someone who seeks out the limelight.
"I'm actually quite a shy person," she said with laugh. "I can go up and sing in front of hundreds of people but if one of them wants to talk to me, I just want to go and hide somewhere."

Kiana's now about to perform to the biggest audience of her life when she performs at this year's Euclovision competition in the Piraean capital, Alikianos. Her song "Call Me", written by Brody Ansel, was selected by NBC to perform at this year's competition. Ansel, who also wrote the lyrics for two other entries in the internal selection process, said that this year's selection process was "really tough" and that the calibre of the competition was "really high".
"There was a lot of good entries out there," he said. "We're stoked that we managed to get selected to represent Nuvania this year."

Ansel said he approached Kiana because he had seen some of her singing videos on social media and had watched her perform during Pardarian cultural festivals. He said he was impressed with her vocal range and singing ability.
"She's extremely talented," he said. "She impressed me a lot with her singing, and we're always looking for more diversity when it comes to singers and artists." Indeed, Kiana will be Nuvania's first non-white artist to represent the country since the country began participating in Euclovision in 2010.

Call Me, according to Ansel, is about escaping the pressures and expectations of modern life and modern society.
"In a literal sense, it's calling the winds to take you away from everyday life to a place where you can just be yourself," he said. "It speaks to the idea that we're told to behave and act and look a certain way and it really inhibits people and their own individuality."

Kiana said that she was "excited" about performing Nuvania's entry into the Euclovision Song Contest, saying that it was a "once in a lifetime opportunity".
"I really can't believe it's happening," she said. "It's amazing."

NBC will air delayed coverage of both semi-finals on April 20 and 22 respectively, with the final on NBC One on April 24 from 3pm.

EUCLOVISION 2022 • Friday 22 April

Alikianos Calling: Hennehouwe's Kenes
"ready" for final

Image
REPORTING:
Erwin Adams

It's been a whirlwind of a year so far for 21-year-old singer-songwriter Kenes Guret Harris, better known simply by her first name.

"Looking back at everything that's happened, I still can't process it all. Like, that all happened. And now this is all happening right now!" Two years ago, the Niersen-born singer released her first single completely independently, with no agent or publishing company to promote her work. She recalls ringing her local radio station, pleading with them to give her single airplay. "If I could go back and tell my 19-year-old self one thing, I'd tell her: Keep ringing them. Keep annoying them. It'll be the best thing you ever do."

As Kenes continued her studies at the acclaimed Muziekacademie in Zilverzee, she continued to release content on the various streaming platforms, with more and more attention coming to her lyricism and artistry upon each release. At the start of her final year of her degree, her friends encouraged her to enter her newly-written song, to whom she had played the tune for the first time, into the nation's most prominent music event: Het Grote Songfestival. The rest, as they say, was history.

In a crowded field of songs that included some of Hennehouwe's most popular and well-established artists, the rawness of Kenes' "Alles wat je doet", a song detailing the heartache felt in the wake of a painful break-up between lifelong friends, struck an immediate chord with the nation. Having been a complete underdog from the start, the song breezed its way to the final of the competition and began to ascend in the charts. In the grand final, and in front of an estimated five million viewers, the 21-year-old stormed both the jury and public votes to claim an emphatic victory. A week later, it topped the charts, staying there for another four weeks, though it has remained in the top ten ever since.

"When my friends encouraged me to submit the entry, I was kind of like, 'nah, they won't listen past ten seconds of it'. But, I guessed it was worth a try. Never in a million years did I think it'd get into the festival, let alone win. It feels like a fever dream just talking about it!"

Her win gave her the right of first refusal to represent Hennehouwe at this year's Euclovision Song Contest. Seen by some as a golden opportunity, by others as a poisoned chalice. There was no hesitation on Kenes' part. "They asked me at the press conference afterwards, 'Would you do [Euclovision]?' My answer was a 'f**k yeah'!"

Amidst the press tours, media attention and en masse airplay of the past few months, the singer has been ardently preparing for her trip to Alikianos. Endless rehearsals, stage planning, even the precise milliseconds of camera changes. At Euclovision, everything has to be perfect.

Since arriving in the Piraean capital almost two weeks ago, Kenes has been seen by some in the Euclo-bubble as a potential dark horse, with the Hennish delegation hoping that the simplicity and emotion of the song translates as well across the globe as it did at home, despite the language barrier. Tuesday's semi-final saw Hennehouwe qualify for the grand final, crossing the first hurdle and alleviating any doubts about the entry becoming 'lost in translation'.

All that's left for Kenes and the delegation is to give it their all during Saturday night's final. "It's going to be the most incredible moment of my life," the singer buzzed after the first dress rehearsal for the main event. "Everything's come together right when it needed to. We're all just so excited to go out there and give it everything. It doesn't matter to me where we come in the voting - just to be here is heaven in itself."

The Euclovision Song Contest 2022 final is live on De Eerste and Radio A, Saturday from 20:00 CET.

HISTORIC FINISH FOR VINALIA IN EUCLOVISION.

Image
Monetochka delighted worldwide audiences in historic 5th place finish.
Orlavo

It was a fun night filled with entertainment as Alikianos hosted the 2022 edition of the Euclovision song contest. The contest brings together countries worldwide under the banner of music. This year Estmere’s Nico Lumineux stole the show with the presentation of "Sweet Talker", which has gained plenty of airtime both in support and controversy, earning Estmere the win. Taking the contest back to the country after a neck and neck contest with fellow Euclean countries Borland and Gaullica. All 3 countries were decided in the final round as Nico won by an advantage of two points over Borlands Anna Bÿler, and 6 points over Gaullica’s Georges Dior. In 4th place Hennehouwe’s KENES earned 4th place tying with Vinalia’s own Monetochka at 84 points each. Vinalia walked away with a historic 5th place finish following a disappointing 2021 showing where the country finished 31st. This is Vinalia’s best result in the competition.

Although the show was early morning for Vinalians, thousands of Vinalians turned over to HTK’s coverage of the event with hosts Vsevolod Matveev and Kseniya Martiukhin, being joined by guests Kobel Kuropdka, Asya Pasternak, both renown and popular Vinalian musicians at home and abroad. Monetochka was considered an underdog in Vinalia’s own local competition, but prevailed in the end as she was selected to represent Vinalia with "Padat v gryaz”. Performing 2nd following eventual winner Lumineux, Monetochka presented an entertaining performance of her song, which garnered the support of the crowd in Alikianos, and received plenty of praise from international juries and viewers alike. Although being sung exclusively in Soravian, the song was an instant hit throughout the world, owing to its catchy tune and excellent live performance. Following the song, searches for both Vinalia and Monetochka topped online search engines, and by the end of the night had become the most searched terms in Paretia, and Belmonte. The song found the greatest success in Paretia, where it earned the country's 1st spot and thus 12 points, the song equally performed well in Belmonte, Dezevau, Gapolania, and Soravia. It ended the night being positively received by all audiences.

As for Vinalians, the Azmaran song "Fulyk-Jelaaden" topped the charts, and received Vinalias full 12 points, as the song has skyrocketed to 1st place in all Vinalian charts. The song sexually charged lyrics caused some controversy in numerous circles, although it seems that it has only enhanced the songs popularity. A petition to have Azmaran singer Alena Birk tour Vinalia has received over 27 thousand signatures with more signatures every minute. The Bistravian song "Pavuk" likewise had great success with Vinalian audiences and the jury earning it the 2nd place. With Vinalians being the largest supporters of the Bistravian group VANTY. Dezevau, Gapolania, and Nuvania likewise received vast support by Vinalian audiences ranking 3rd, 4th, and 5th places respectively. Borland’s entry "Þet is nët fÿr" likewise received criticism for its sexually charged lyrics, but it did not stop it from earning Vinalia’s 6th place and 5 points. Chistovodian singer Mihail Theodorescu earned Vinalia’s 7th place, with eventual winner Estmere receiving 3 points and the 8th place. Gaullica and Paretia rounded up the last two Vinalian selections. With Vinalia for its first time in Euclovision participation, it did not vote for Soravia.

President Valeria Kunavin called the result historic, and invited Monetochka to Vinalinsk. The Minister-President likewise called it a historic moment for Vinalia, where Vinalian talent was allowed to shine at the world stage. Monetochka, who is only 23, has received countless praise from some of Vinalias most renowned musicians, for her performance in Euclovision. Vinalia leaves Alikianos with an astonishing result, with great success and bright future for Vinalian musicians, both at home, and at broad. The night was filled controversy and much criticism was leveraged at numerous countries by audience, broadcasters, and juries alike. However the night ended on a high note, with a testament to friendship and art, and expectations for next years contest in Estmere.
