The Festival of Martyrs Kicks Off, As Does the Political Campaign Season

Mar'si, Holy Marsh- Marshites celebrate the Festival of Martyrs this week, the longest holiday of the year for members of the faith. In the Matriarchy, it is the only break from work or school that Marshites receive aside from sabbath days and is marked by a number of parties, feasts, and activities. Most sports leagues finalize their year with championship games, while television stations play for attention with season finales and big premieres. Parties and feasts aplenty dot the cities, while every Shrine puts their own spin on the celebration. Primitive Shrine members imbibe substances that allow them to speak with their fallen ancestors, spending days at a time in trances. The Warrior Shrine stages elaborate and deadly reenactments of famous battles. The Assassin Shrine honors their fallen by announcing all the targets slain by membership in the past year, as well as distributing new targets for the upcoming year. The variations are endless; the key being that for a week, much of the nation takes a step back and relaxes.

Of course, certain facets do not. The military and security forces at large commit to celebrations that do not lower their readiness, while AI Citizenship has largely taken the reins of manufacturing and transportation. A wide range of people choose to work for any number of causes, usually in shifts with others. The seven-day holiday tends to be around five for the average Marshite, but on the whole it is still a time of relative laxity. The Arch-Bishop's daily morning service is viewed as a barometer for the health of Marshite viewing. It averages between 1.4 and 1.6 billion from inside the Matriarchy and around that same number outside, not including repeats for timezones and the Night of the Matriarchy. Numbers released yesterday show more than 9 billion from inside Holy Marsh watched just today, and that number, in general, fluctuates only a little over the week.

While the Arch-Bishop gets the most eyes on her, many Shrines use this as a time to pitch new ideas, political moves, and defenses against both. For much of the year Marshites tend to spend what little time they have with media on religious or news-related programs, with sports taking up the majority of the rest of viewing time. The Festival of Martyrs is thus the one time a year most Shrines are able to communicate in-depth agendas to their membership. "It is easily the most important time in the entire political calendar of the Shrines," states Dr. Heleia Asweur, a Marshite doctor of media from a prestigious Romani university. "Opinions and stances will be formed over the following few days that will remain largely unchanged the rest of the year, with only minor movement. A well-argued case that runs against a poorly-executed defense can leave the Shrine that made the case ascendant in political power for the next year."

Most of the time, "the agendas at play aren't really all that difficult or substantial. While there are many differences between Shrines, they are often kept in check by the Arch-Bishop, and always kept in check by the Marshite populace. Disunity among the Shrines is something Marshites by and large do not tolerate. As such, most politics at play tend to involve fringe matters and small engagements that both sides tend to see as relatively insignificant.

Not this year.
From the start of the festival, many of the largest Shrines have coordinated a message in support of a modified version of the legendary, and controversial, Kraksi Proposal. Hailing from 1761 LW, it postulated that while every Shrine had merit, certain Shrines that had greater influence are foundational to the success of the nation and should hold a special place. They were to be called Major Shrines, and they would sponsor the minor ones to operate within their sphere of influence. It was dead on arrival then and has often been dredged up as a warning whenever one Shrine or another has gained too much power.
Now, however, the largest Shrines have started to argue in favor of it. They have coordinated it well- dominating the airwaves on the more neutral networks while using their own networks to supplement one another's arguments. Smaller Shrines who stand in opposition have been numerous, but were caught off guard and have not created a single unified argument against it. As such, there is a growing belief that the controversial plan may have some hope of succeeding.

As detailed, the current proposal has been named the Martyr Lainika Amendment. A number of Shrines, based on criteria determined by the Arch-Bishop, would be declared the Favored Shrines of Marshism. They would hold the Cardinal Council positions and determine the makeup of the Bishop Council, with specially elected representatives from the Sponsored Shrines (all other Shrines), serving on the Cardinal Council at the behest of the Favored Shrine. Each Favored Shrine would be allowed to sponsor another Shrine and make it a Sponsored Shrine. Following a relatively quick time period, Shrines not Favored or Supported would automatically be considered for Erasure, as their beliefs would be too alien to Marshism to survive in such a climate.

Proponents argue that this has three main advantages. The first is that it would allow the Faith's leadership to more accurately reflect the overwhelming will of the Faithful while still respecting the smaller Shrines and the special relationships that already exist between the major and minor shrines. Indeed, many of the smaller Shrines act in concert with larger Shrines whom share a similar general view. An example would be the Singularity, Space, Tamaranean, and Knowledge Shrines, who work closely with the larger Science Shrine in many aspects of Shrine politics, a system seen as broadly favorable to smaller Shrines who can wield the influence of larger allies more effectively than the opposite. By formalising this relationship it would allow the Favored Shrines to benefit from this relationship in ways they cannot currently do so. Politically, this would simplify a great deal of matters and would ensure a more effective deployment of the Arch-Bishop's will.

Critics argue that in effect this would turn the Theocratic Matriarchy into a state dominated by only a handful of the most powerful Shrines, eliminating opportunities for smaller Shrines to grow or achieve such high offices as the Arch-Bishop. They go on to claim that the proposal goes against the Marshite belief that all Shrines are valid interpretations of holy scripture by creating layers of equality to that statement. This has been a cornerstone of Marshite growth- the understanding that every Shrine had a valid interpretation and all could be correct. "It is a dangerous statement to make, that some are greater than others in the name of the Holy Marsh," said Brother-Champion Corvad Crocia of the Combat Shrine, "and one we do not intend to allow to grow unchecked in the consciousness of the people."

As the debate goes back and forth on the airwaves over the Festival of Martyrs, battle lines are being drawn and there is a growing belief that the next year will see movement on the topic. Whether it will take the form of a public vote- something Luboski has increasingly promoted during topics of import- or an internal one, there seems to be growing acceptance from all players that it will not remain organizational fiction to be bandied about any longer. Instead, one way or another, there will be a decisive movement that may portend a foundational change in Shrine politics.

EMPRESS PRAISES 'RESILIANT' CITIZENS DURING NEW YEAR'S ADDRESS

WHAKAARA
Te Kuia o Whenua [the Empress] has paid tribute to the 'indefatigable resilience and spirit of the people' in her New Years day address to the nation from the Imperial Palace.

Her Worship acknowledged that "For many of My subjects, 2021 has been a year of abject suffering due to the pandemic and economic recession" in an address which was recorded at Whakaara Castle earlier this week.

"I understand that during times of upheaval and suffering it can be impossible to look to the future with any sense of hope or optimism," She said.

"It is at these times that it is a useful exercise to look back, just for a moment, and see how far one has come. Our Empire has faced unprecedented challenges in the last 12 months, as has our world, but the very fact that we are here and breathing today is an accomplishment that is truly worth celebration."

Her Worship's voice was recorded and broadcast on radio as well as television and the internet, the latter accompanied by her official portrait as it remains illegal to photograph or film a reigning Empress.

"I send my greetings to all, from the north to the south, the east to the west and out into the world.

"For many of My subjects, 2021 has been a year of abject suffering due to the pandemic and economic recession. We have seen disasters ranging from extreme weather and the effects of climate change, to economic upheavals that have forced far too many families into positions of hardship and even poverty and I acknowledge this fact with profound sadness.

"I understand that during times of upheaval and suffering it can be impossible to look to the future with any sense of hope or optimism.

"It is at these times that it is a useful exercise to look back, just for a moment, and see how far one has come. Our Empire has faced unprecedented challenges in the last 12 months, as has our world, but the very fact that we are here and breathing today is an accomplishment that is truly worth celebration.

"When one is in the grip of the storm, being tossed to and fro by the waves of fate it can seem impossible to believe that the ocean could one day be calm and still again - but it is true and all things shall pass, all hardship and sorrow is temporary.

"Times of suffering are also times of extraordinary acts of courage and goodness and is during these times that the unwavering, indefatigable resilience and spirit of the people is at its most prominent.

"Suffering can be alleviated and lessened when we extend our hand to our neighbour and share the burden. I have been deeply honoured to have borne witness to many such extraordinary acts in the last year.

"My beloved subjects, I honour you as you honour me for the true spirit of this nation lies in the hearts and actions of all of you, and as such I am moved and honoured by that which this nation has achieved in such a testing year.

"Please accept my warmest wishes for the new year ahead. Love is best expressed through service and so we must all do our duties and be of service to one another until the clouds part and the sun shines upon this crestfallen world once again.

"Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa."

Elsewhere in the nation, greengrocers have reported a nationwide cucumber shortage due to high demand as well as transport issues caused by the pandemic.

Eating a cucumber on New Years Day for good luck remains a tradition in Tangatarehua, dating back to the legend of Kua Ngaro te Kapene who was shipwrecked following a storm but survived an entire year on a desert island eating nothing but cucumbers.

The Slasher Genre Comes to AHSCA with Blood Moon

Image
by: Sotone Saiki, Literary Columnist

Greetings again readers, it's time for another literary look at one of the latest bestsellers in AHSCA and that is a rather black sheep hit of Blood Moon by first time author, Kirara Kuno, a Hoshino native of 14, Miss Kuno is newly published but this isn't her first writing work, for as long a she can remember and first made waves in a local short story contest with her first most decidedly non-horror work, The Girls from the Sea a rather traditional romance story of a mermaid and a siren finding love (maybe not so traditional?). The contest that was held by Port Aya's local newspaper and Miss Kuno heard about it in her frequent haunt the Glimmering Galleon a pub just off the harbor. I assure readers her time there is perfectly innocuous as it's owned by her father. But to make her publishing debut however, Miss Kuno opted not for her first prize winning short story but a more sinister unpleasant dark tale of the classic horror sub genre, the slasher. The slashers have been a popular go to movie storytelling for decades in the world of cinema but not as much in the world of novels.

Though some cinema has made inroads into the UIS, the written word still dominates AHSCA and will certainly continue for time to come. Meanwhile, AHSCA's literary work is often more geared towards romance, cute stories, gentle healing stories and the like, rarely the work of shocking horror that the slasher brings about. In this story, set in a fictional large village similar to the large ports where a stoic young girl named Uta Yueda lives her daily average life with the usual ups and downs until one strange night something in her snaps. In an evening where large ominous blood red moon appears in the sky, Uta picks up a knife and gets her taste of the extreme violence as she strikes down her first victim in the night a helpless brothel worker. The story progresses as the ominous red moon lingers and Uta keeps up her blood lust. When the blue moon returns one would think her violence would be quelled but alas it remains. Only hope for the weary villagers paralyzed by fear is the work of the senior Sheriff, Mutsumi Sasaki as the cat and mouse game begins as the law and the lawless continue to but heads in violent and dangerous ways.

The Sheriff Sasaki, while doing her best to be an honorable officer of the law, must balance the need to preserve the balance of law enforcement versus the need to have an open society not under the thumb of stiffing authority. Yueda meanwhile seems to lose all sense of her morality as she kills with near in-discrimination of any pathetic soul to cross her path, though she appears to draw a vague line in the sand somewhere. Using clever bait and switch tricks and drilling up the suspense, a moment Uta Yueda comes across a child keeps you on the edge feeling she's about to snuff the life from the young flower but alas she doesn't. Choice of weapon for Uta? The old knife. Guns being accessible in the UIS as much as anywhere.

How does it end? I'll leave that to you the reader to find out in this scary story that may make you queasy. I did sit down with the young author to talk to her about her first publication and what inspired this tale of grim. What I rather expected was someone draped in heavy blacks with a lot of makeup but instead I saw a rather petite young lady, messy brown hair, her eyes rather hidden behind them, a rather quiet but sweet voice and a cat like smile. First thing she showed me was her vast collection of dolls, yes just ordinary dolls dressed in a variety of outfits.

Image

"Mama is a sailor who goes all over the world on the seas, she always brings me a doll or two, and I love them all, they're all so cute." She told me about the various dolls. "I think the ones wearing the fancy old dresses are my favorites."

Now the real interview began about the work itself.

"Your first work was a short story more inline with the tastes of the public and is what got the attention of Palm Tree Publishing , so what made you decided on a horror story?"

"The publicist wanted a full story while the Girls is a short. I like that story a lot but if I wanted to be published, I needed a full story and I didn't see anyway to make it longer...The very night I was asked to submit a new story for PTP I had a scary dream and I thought it'd be fun to write a scary story."

"Slashers are known more as a movie genre, how did you come up with the idea of a killer story like this?

"During the festival, I heard a couple of tourists in my papa's pub talk about a horror movie they watched on the way to the islands. The idea sounded exciting and of course scary so I thought it'd be fun."

How did you form the basis of the story?

"Once again from my scary dream to the actual blood moon just before the festival. Of course I know that it's a lunar eclipse and what makes it happen but in the days of old, blood moons could be bad or good omens depending on who you asked. I took it as a good omen after my scary dream and getting the offer to write. It's why I also decided to write about someone who starts rampaging during the moon"

The book is vague if the moon is causing some kind of evil influence or if Uta is just unstable, do you want to say which it is?

"That's a secret? :3"

Ha ha, fair enough. Do you normally like scary stories or was this a first?

"I like most stories to be honest, I'm not picky. Scary stories are fun too. My favorite scary story is Village of the Mist by Rukia, it's a fun chilling read."

I've read that one as well, it is good but I would also note it's more mind horror while yours went with a violent angle

"Life is often full of violence. From the time we're kids we're taught about our bloody war for independence, we're taught about wars elsewhere. I don't know much about war or the military though. Besides war, we have violent storms that can kill people or animals or crops. I don't think it's wrong to honestly write about violence anymore than it's wrong to write about love."

Very good points. You mentioned the lunar eclipse just before the festival was a big reason why you made the moon a focus, any other reasons?

"The moon is so apart of our lives here especially. It's a part of the old stories of the Goddesses, it controls the tides and everything else on Earth. It's a bright light outside when it would be pitch dark without a lantern. Though I did want to use thunder and lightning more because that's also a big part of life here but I decided to keep it spare just to keep the mystery if the moon makes Uta crazy or if she's just crazy on her own. If that makes sense. :3"

After Blood Moon, what would you like to write next?

"I'm not sure, I'll need to see of PTP likes the results of this. I might write another scary story I might go for another romance I might try a comedy. I don't know yet but I'll find it."

Your book is expected to go international how do you feel about it?

"It's not that much of a surprise yet, I know a lot of AHSCA books go to Lamoni, Mokastana and Holy Marsh because they're such close nations so I guess I'll be a bit more surprised if it goes further. I hope they like it there though. Maybe it'll get a movie too :3"

If that were to happen, would you like to get involved?

"I don't know much about making movies but it'd be fun to learn I guess but maybe I'll leave it to the people who know that stuff."

We concluded the interview there, the young girl said she'd also like to go overseas somewhere with her new payments from the book. "Most of my advance I gave to my parents, for mama's ship and papa's bar. I love them a lot and they really supported me through writing this. So now any future royalties I'm gonna indulge on myself a little. I'm not gonna be rich but if I can go overseas that will be fun."

Shock Announcement Shakes The Faith; Martyr Lainika Amendment Enacted By Arch-Bishop Luboski

Mar'si, Holy Marsh- In a stunning announcement near the end of Her daily morning service marking the end of the Festival of Martyrs, the Arch-Bishop announced she has approved a controversial change to the Theocratic Matriarchy known as the Martyr Lainika Amendment. A variation of the old Kraksi Proposal, it will position a number of Shrines as Favored Shrines that will hold the Cardinal positions in the Cardinal Council and determine the makeup of the Bishop Council. Those not declared Favored Shrines would have to be sponsored by a favored Shrine and will by and large have their roles in the Bishop Council dictated, and serve on the Cardinal Council on a rotational basis. Those are the major elements to the Amendment among many others, though for now those are what has driven most discussions and debate.

Proponents state that this new arrangement has three main advantages. The first is that it will allow the Faith's leadership to more accurately reflect the overwhelming will of the Faithful while still respecting the smaller Shrines and the special relationships that already exist between the Favored Shrines and Sponsored Shrines. They have often portrayed opposition to this as an unfair method of smaller, minority Shrines wielding undue influence. Politically, this would simplify a great deal of matters and would ensure a more effective deployment of the Arch-Bishop's will, which regardless of circumstance is the dominant philosophy of the nation.

Critics argue that this will in effect turn the Theocratic Matriarchy into a state dominated by only a handful of the most powerful Shrines, eliminating opportunities for smaller Shrines to grow or achieve such high offices as the Arch-Bishop. They go on to claim that the proposal goes against the Marshite belief that all Shrines are valid interpretations of holy scripture by creating layers of equality to that statement. This has been a cornerstone of Marshite growth- the understanding that every Shrine had a valid interpretation and all could be correct. Many Shrine leaders have hurriedly made statements in fierce opposition to this new organizational structure, which is due to be in working order by the end of the month. "This is an unacceptable movement made without consultation. The Arch-Bishop in all of Her Well-Meaning has not listened to Her righteous instincts. We hope to speak with Her, and help Her understand the necessity of the traditional system," stated Adrott Eraskilu of the Hive Shrine, through a statement that was signed by more than two dozen other high Shrine officials from across the spectrum in support.

The Arch-Bishop released a list of Shrines late last night, including reasons for their inclusion as Major Shrines. While the list and her reasons constitute 35 pages out of the 60 page statement released we have summarized it for ease of consumption.

The Commune Shrine was chosen due to its influence as the Shrine of the current Arch-Bishop. There has been discussion that it could rotate out to the Shrine of the current Arch-Bishop whenever a new one is elected. It is believed a number of Shrines that would otherwise have difficulty finding homes elsewhere will petition to be sponsored by the Commune Shrine.

The Warrior Shrine was chosen due to its overwhelmingly important influence in Marshite history and the importance of warfare in the past, present, and future of the church. As one of the larger Shrines it was considered an obvious inclusion, and it is expected to pursue a number of war and combat-related Shrines to Sponsor.

The Female Shrine was selected due to its size, being the largest Shrine, and its notably aggressive political operations. Many believe that it was one of the main proponents, if not the main proponent, of advancing the system. It has spoken in the past of a number of Shrines it considers 'naturally submissive' to its edicts, and is expected to pursue many aggressively.

The Non-Human Shrine was chosen due to its nature as the alpha shrine of the large non-human population in the world. With its recent massive growth and the large role it plays in Marshite foreign policy, it was considered a very obvious inclusion into the list. Many Shrines involving smaller non-human populations are expected to fold quickly as Sponsored Shrines.

The Science Shrine was chosen due to its vital role in the success of the Theocratic Matriarchy, and its vast influence on the progress of the nation. It was a foregone conclusion that the Science Shrine, which often works alongside a number of others, would be included due to its political and societal influence. It is expected to have a large number of Sponsored Shrines.

The Primitive Shrine was chosen due to its popularity, but many believe primarily due to political placating. As a fierce opponent of the Science Shrine it is believed that it threatened to mobilize its vast and long-standing alliances to force the proposal to die, and its inclusion was part of a deal to prevent this from happening. While not many Shrines are expected to be Sponsored, it is expected to do so quickly.

The Experience Shrine was chosen due to its influence abroad and its close relationship with most Shrines. Known as the dealmaker internally and externally as one of the most common Shrines of emigrating Marshites, it is not too surprising that it has made its way as a Major Shrine. It is unknown how many Shrines will be Sponsored by it, though it is expected to act as a refuge.

In a rare display, more than six thousand permits have been registered seeking public gatherings in support or in opposition to this move. With permits moving through the Shrines themselves it is expected very few will meet with any real opposition, and the Arch-Bishop has stated she currently sees no need to intervene against any given permit. Inquisitorial Civil Security and Militia Public Service are also expected to look over several of the larger petitions. Assuming normal procedure, net Holy Day may as well see tens of millions in the streets, and officials are bracing for further disruptions.

More as this develops.

Billions Demonstrate Legally Within the Theocracy; More Abroad

Mar'si, Holy Marsh- From one end of the Romani-Mar'si Union to the other and most importantly inside of the Theocracy itself, Marshites took to the streets to make their voices heard regarding the Lainika Amendment. In Mar'si itself over fifty million Marshites participated, while the Khaskan Fieldworks rotationally sported tens of millions itself. In the deep jungles came the pounding of drums as the Yuna Dynastic Tribes rocked the jungle in jubilation. In St. Husky, sixteen wings of militia aircraft formed up in displeasure and trailed words of disagreement. The Crucible of Carahana saw a cadre of Combat Shrine and Assassin Shrine personnel engage in pre-planned, legal street fighting with members of the Warrior Shrine, leaving three hundred dead and another three thousand wounded. And while that alliance owned the Crucible's Streets, it had little impact as a hundred thousand other demonstrations took place across the nation.

Outside of the few pre-planned violent engagements between Shrines to bloodlet and let frustrations be known, violence has not been a wide feature of the demonstrations. More than a billion Marshites in the Theocracy itself have taken part and just as many if not more throughout the rest of the Union, not withstanding the multitudes abroad. In Lesra, Mercantile Shrine youths attacked a Commune Shrine procession and were taken into custody by local Shrine Guards, while in Yeraka Lushi an exchange of gunfire between embedded snipers in the deep jungle city created high tensions. Despite these and a few other incidents, the Inquisition, Militia, and Arch-Bishop have all agreed that the demonstrations have been overwhelmingly successful and as the night draws down and Marshites start to rerturn to their normal modus operandi it appears that the situation has settled completely.

It has been difficult gauging the exact feeling of the populace as the issue is geavily divisive. As expected, there was a divide between those who follow one of the so-called Favored Shrines as a primary Shrine and those who consider their primary Shrine to be a soon-to-be-classified Sponsored Shrine. The former have been overwhelmingly supportive, the latter overwhelmingly opposed. As the day went on, the Arch-Bishop stayed on the airwaves all day answering calls from concerned Clergy from all Shrines, answering questions and debunking falsehoods. She has been widely praised for her calm demeanor and many believe that had their been any threat of an explosive situation develop that she had defused it deftly.

Even as the mass demonstrations continued there were signs that nearly all Shrine leaders were starting to acclimate to the upcoming norm, and many were angling to find their place. The Singularity, Tamaranean, Knowledge, and Space Shrines did not host any formal demonstrations and instead spent much of the day meeting with Science Shrine leadership publicly. And while outside observers may guess that the street violence between the Assassin, Combat, and Warrior Shrines is indication of a potential for larger scale violence, the nature of their agreements to pursue it seems to indicate that the Shrines will likely close ranks with one another. Some Shrines have remained defiant- the Mercantile Shrine's leader, CEO Francine Lascat has stated that she plans on pursuing all options to keep the Amendment from affecting the Shrine.

Still, after today there is not expected to be any other major hurdles to the Amendment, which goes into effect the end of the month.

The Nadeshiko Leader

-Shiba Tigers Clinch Narrow Victory Against Hickory Mustangs-

HICKORY, ABETTON - Thousands of baseball fans, fanatics and all around lovers of the great Meridional pastime descended upon the small city of Hickory in Abetton, last night to witness the all time rivalry of the Major's two biggest teams, from here in Katase the Shiba Tigers and from Abetton, the Hickory Mustangs. The game began early in the evening under clear night skies and a roaring crowd with the Mustangs taking the home field advantage of being up to the bat at first. All Star Hitter for the Mustangs, Izzy Izaria was first up. Tonight, the usually reliable hitter seemed a bit off her game against The Tiger's own pitcher, Kuroe Gojou (pictured above), as two strikes were quickly racked up. But even Gojou's hot fast balls were no match for Izaria's swing as on the third pitch, a mighty home run was hit scoring their first point. Perhaps it would be thought of an omen of the game to come but the evening was full of surprises. Gojou might have let one slip past her but the other batters were kept at bay with one bunt that resulted in an out and the others strikes, rotating up the roster.

As the Tigers took their time up to bat, the ace pitcher for the Mustangs, Sara White kept up the heat striking out all batters and yet again quickly switching up the in and outfield teams. The night drew on and hits were accomplished as again the teams seemed to regularly rotate between in and out but in at the bottom of the 9th is when things truly got interesting. The Tigers yet again were up to bat. With two on base and two-outs this was down to the wire as The Mustangs squeaked a narrow lead of 4-3 this time it was Hiro Tamaki's turn to bat. As White threw her first pitch, Tamaki slammed the ball hitting the second home run for the night scoring the Tiger's their win and first victory over the Abetton team in five years! The crowds cheered and went wild at the sight, it didn't matter, Abettonian or Katanese, everyone was on the edge of their seat to see how it would turn out and in the end the narrow victory brought a lot of cheers.

After the game we caught up with Tiger's Coach, Wakana Inoue, all smiles he held up the Pennat for the win "My team trained hard, we worked over every play time and tirelessly again and sure enough we made it. Assistant Coach for the Tigers, Shion Shima was equally delighted with the results. "We worked long and hard in the summer heat," she said, "We earned our victory tonight."

For the opposing team, despite the loss one can't say they didn't have a good time. MVP, Izaria in particular was taking the loss in great stride "Loss sucks sometimes," she said, "But when the game is that tight it really does make you love it more. The Tigers played hard and we played hard and in the end they got lucky but we'll be back next season and reclaim our title."

For the team's coach, Julia Jones, the loss didn't come as a major blow "A loss that close to me, shows we kept fighting to the end. If it had been a shutout like a much wider score, it'd be much more disappointing."

In the end, both teams went home, The Tigers resounding success and for the Mustangs what can be described as bittersweet. Either way the game was exciting.

An earthquake was felt across the Kinjou Region in the late-afternoon-early evening hours of 15 January. The shaking which lasted for 35 seconds was felt across the region with the Roubai Provence feeling the most shaking and lighter tremors across the remainder of the region. The shaking registered as a 3 from the Katase Meteorological Agency and didn't cause any notable or serious damage. Residents report damage to smaller non-secure objects but no injuries have been reported. The quake originated 5 kilometers offshore and prompted tsunami warnings across the southern Katase region though no serious tsunamis occurred and warnings expired after 30 minutes. Lainika Amendment Changes Theocracy

Mar'si, Holy Marsh- Starting today, the Church's new organization system goes into place, with the past several weeks being spent behind the scenes with Favored and Sponsored Shrines negotiating between one another. As of tomorrow's holy day, all Shrines will be organized into Favored Shrines- Commune, Warrior, Female, Non-Human, Science, Primitive, and Experience- and the Sponsored Shrines. Favored Shrines hold all seats in the Cardinal Council and dictate the makeup of the Bishop Council. Sponsored Shrines exist underneath the umbrella of the Favored Shrines and while they are mostly independent, it is understood that the Favored Shrines will influence the Sponsored Shrines to various extents. The changes and developments are numerous and near impossible to detail in any given article, with the future greatly depending on how the relationships between Shrines develop. What is known are the Favored Shrines and who they have Sponsored, many after long hours of intense negotiation:

The Commune Shrine has chosen to Sponsor the Tranquility Shrine, Stoic Shrine, Nature Shrine, Hive Shrine, and the Anarchy Shrine.

The Warrior Shrine has chosen to Sponsor the Crusader Shrine, Assassin Shrine, Combat Shrine, Oathsworn Shrine, and the Service Shrine.

The Female Shrine has chosen to Sponsor the LGBT Shrine, Populist Shrine, Athletics Shrine, Endless Shrine, and the Sea Shrine.

The Non-Human Shrine has chosen to Sponsor the Avianar Shrine, Felinas Shrine, Tel'Quessir Shrine, Dragon Shrine, and the Ponyist Shrine.

The Science Shrine has chosen to Sponsor the Singularity Shrine, Knowledge Shrine, Space Shrine, Tamaranean Shrine, and the Engineering Shrine.

The Primitive Shrine has chosen to Sponsor the City-State Shrine, Procreation Shrine, Imperial Shrine, Sun Shrine, and the Moon Shrine.

The Experience Shrine has chosen to Sponsor the Artist Shrine, Meritocracy Shrine, Reality Shrine, Magic Shrine, and the Decadence Shrine.

The following Shrines are not Sponsored at the moment, though most are in the middle of negotiations and are expected to make announcements soon: Meritocracy, Mercantile, Legalism, Structuralism, Corporatism, Underdark, Pushania, Humanist, and the Khasam Shrine.

The Monotheistic and Polytheistic Shrines exist outside of this structure, as part of the old system that has been retained.

While there are still pockets of people who are against this system, as of tomorrow it will be in place and in practice. Multiple ceremonies and further statements are expected from the favored Shrines soon.

Palmyrion Condemns Terrorists

"We congratulate our sisters and brothers in Palmyrion for acting on the threat of terrorism in their own borders," the Arch-Bishop said in response to the legislation passed in the southwestern Union state of Palmyrion. While most commentary has been positive, some have questioned why it has taken so long for Palmyrion to act on the clear threat in their borders. Sister-Praetor Zallaran Bree "They have committed terrorist acts and have agitated against peace and freedom across the region. Why anyone tolerates them is beyond me, and why Palmyrion was so slow to act is confusing."

Archon Perhallas announces military agreement with Holy Marsh, and offers formal aid to Ladero
The agreement with the Theocracy was joint-negotiated with Shekana, marking a re-opening of relations, as well as a "offer to restore order" towards Ladero and the Taraon nations
Gnaeus Tanicius Vopiscus (@Gnaeus Tanicius Vopiscus)(TH)
Morning Star 2, 3E12 1:00 PM | Ebonaervon, Aman

Ebonaervon, Itailia(Herald) — On the steps of the Curia Ioannes, and joined by a representative of the Diarch's household, Archon Perhallas announced that he had secured formal Senatorial approval of a three way agreement with the Theocracy of Holy Marsh and Shekana regarding the former being allowed to host military forces at bases within Aman and Shekanan territories; the agreement will see the Theocracy granted a portion of JFB Anadune to form NAB Tieste, the largest Imperial Navy base that sits alongside the banks of the Hythelan Channel and guards access to the inland sea, and also to the Bay of Chains, while Shekana has granted permission for the Theocracy to assume control over what was the Ulmar Dock, a Shekanan naval base that has become mostly abandoned, it will be known as NAB Mala under the Theocracy which has a 50-year lease on the site. Negotiations took place by a Diarch-appointed consul, and apparently were spearheaded within the Senate by Senator Mammercus (NC), which helped ensure it was ratified easily with a 2/3rds assentation.

While the moment is a watershed for Shekanan-Amanitte relations, which don't formally exist since the military coup there two decades ago, and also for Amanitte relations with the Theocracy which prior to today were minimal at best, it will be largely overshadowed by the later half of the Archon's press conference, where he also included that with the Diarch's blessing the government, and Legion, were on standby to offer complete assistance to the nation(s) Sorofi, whom has been invaded by Irfatan military forces, and Ladero which has been similarly attacked by Istoloa; the Archon stated that his government believes Istoloa and Irfat to be collaborating in their military efforts, and "will be uncompromising in our assistance to the Laderon and Sorofian peoples in not just rebuking this unwanted aggression, but also bringing about a lasting peace and stability to Tarao, Greater Isoloa, and the surrounding regions."

Releases by the Archon's press corp afterwards detailed further that the offer of assistance would be open to any prior WEDTAG members, with the intention of getting them to rejoin in a cooperative effort not unlike formerly-named organization had arranged, be it in an revival of said group or in the formation of something new entirely, but the key goal outlined was that the Greater Istoloa people (a broad term that is being used to name Istoloa, Sorofi, Irfi, Ladero, Fustera, Tupenga, and Samarasta) be allowed to pursue the freedom of self-determination unhindered by interference from oppressors domestic or foreign. In coordination with these efforts, and in wake of the devolution of order in particular in Tupenga and Fustera it was revealed that the Navy will be deploying the entirety of the 2nd and 5th Fleets to Jeshoda Channel and Bay of Chains to ensure that international waters remain safe for traversing by all, so called "enforcement of the freedom of maritime navigation". Praefectus Classis Marcus Calvisius Ferentinus, who is in command as the ranking flag officer in the 2nd Fleet, will oversee the entire operation and outlined in his own brief statement to the press that a majority of the principal battle groups in both fleets, which are mostly full carrier battlegroups although the 5th Fleet contains substanial submarine forces, have already begun to mobilized and deploy towards their designated zones in this affair. In conjunction with the Praefectus's statement, the Imperial Air Force announced it will resume running 24/7 maritime patrol flights over the Jeshoda Channel, naming that the 220th, 228th and 256th Air Wings will be primarily responsible for coordinating this, based off of existing IAF bases along the coast or with the recently expanded network of pan-service bases across the coastline and other critical areas in Aman.

MNN: SPECIAL REPORT!!!
News so short your can't help but read the full story...

TOP STORIES:

Additional starports in production! Secondary Mokan Spaceport under Federal legal battle!

Santa Franco, Tatom
People's Unified Federation

It is estimated that space based trade has nearly doubled every year since Starport Roswell began accepting GATA traffic, and every year, the starports continue to expand. Last year Starport Churchill in Aqua Anu opened a second terminal, and Starport Lion in Wellovia is planning an expansion as well. However, Roswell remains the largest, and may be reaching its limits. Expansion in Rosewell is currently underway, but a second Starport in Mokastana, Starport Franshaw, is being proposed for the Mokan nation of Moxhuactl. However, Senators and President Alejandro Tennet of Tatom are petitioning the Federal government to reconsider this option, and instead focus on Rosewell expansions.

From the Tatomese perspective, the success of Starport Rosewell is one of the main reasons they voted to remain in the Federation after seperating from Mejico. Tatomese concern is that a Starport located further south would take traffic away from Rosewell given it would be closer to the industrial heartland. While those in favor believe that one Starport for the entirety of Mokastana is simply unfeasible in today's economy. The Rukkapa Desert in northern Mokastana is ideal for additional landing zones, and should be looked into. A third faction, backed by the support of the President of the Federation, Ben Rodriguez, is looking at building an additional Starport in Suria, on the southern half of Mokastana. The pro surian argument is that it would relieve pressure on the PanMoka canal traffic, while not directly competing with Starport Rosewell. Tatomese President Tennet stated that no matter where a new Starport is built, it will take traffic, and therefore money, away from Tatom.

Feuds within the Marshite Shrines result in widespread protests across the Federation. Largest in the Hija Khanates

In the The Marshite Hijra Khanates, mass demonstrations saw more than five million people take to the streets. The overwhelming majority are opposed to the Amendment. As members by and large of the Service and Mercantile Shrines, there is a belief among many that this will effectively crowd them out of any Shrine political power. More pointedly for many, the Mercantile Shrine and the Commune Shrine are long term enemies, and there is a fear that there does not exist a place for the Mercantile Shrine as a Sponsored Shrine. It remains unknown what will happen to a Shrine that cannot get Sponsored, though rumors persist that it may lead to the Shrine being considered for review and disbandment. Such rumors have inflamed opposition. With the Khanates being less restricted than other zones of Marshite influence, demonstrations have not been limited to Wednesday and it is expected that more demonstrations will follow. The Arch-Bishop- who has been busy dealing with demonstrations inside of the Theocratic Matriarchy- has said she plans to meet with members of the Khanate to put to rest some concerns that she blames on spurious foreign rumors seeking to undermine Marshite unity.

The MDC and Federal Security Forces, most importantly the Federal Police, have stated that the vast majority of demonstrations went off without a hitch. The MDC, which despite the many members of it making their contrasting opinions well known, took the lead in organizing and securing the mass demonstrations. They liasoned with federal forces and worked with local labor leaders and politicians to ensure that the events would not spiral out of control. Indeed, they appear to have succeeded. Millions of Marshites across the Federation took to the streets in support or protest of the Lainika Amemdment. In Aqua Anu, recent polls indicate that more than seventy percent of Marshites were in favor of the amendment while in El Sur that number is reversed. On the whole, the MDC said that it stands 'in general alignment' with the Arch-Bishop, but that such a statement comes with 'many notable disagreements' internally.
Some speculated early in the process that the internal divide was far more agitated and could even lead to a splitting of the party. Communicatio Secretary Sederu Lookun stated that such rumors were false: "The Marshite Defense Council stands as united as ever in the matters of defending and promoting Marshism, Marshites, and the values they represent. Anyone looking for weakness or seeking a way to exploit us will be sorely disappointed."

While the demonstrations were by and large very peaceful, the breadth and passion of the issue led to several small flare ups. While most were solved quickly, gunfire marred the end of the pro-amendment march in Wellovia. Both the MDC and Federal Police were quick to blame non-Marshite agitators for the shooting that left four dead, and have pledged to uncover the 'dark conspiracy' behind the violence.

Ghastak Endorses Tripartite Bay of Chains Pact
Upper House Indicates Approval of Moves by Perhallas and Luboski

Today the Upper House of the Legislature passed by an overwhelming majority a Sense of the Ghastak resolution reflecting public opinion toward recent developments in the Shartoun Sea region. The resolution gives the green light to President Shrdlu in approaching the recent instability in the Tarao region, and on western seas. The measure passed with the support of four of the five parties, the sole National Democrat in the body abstaining. The resolution reads as follows

By Vote of the Ghastak in Assembly Today

It is the sense of the Ghastak that:

Whereas The recent events in the south concerning change of regime in the region of the Shartourn Sea have come to the attention of this body through public media and information from the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and

Whereas Freedom of navigation of nearby waterways, namely the Jesheoda Channel, The Bay of Chains, The Hythelan Channel and The Great Inland Sea is important to Eitoan trade and critical to national security, and

Whereas The stated goal of the recent agreement between Holy Marsh, Aman and Shekana that “ Istoloa, Sorofi, Irfi, Ladero, Fustera, Tupenga, and Samarasta be allowed to pursue the freedom of self-determination unhindered by interference from oppressors domestic or foreign” is compatible with the tenor of Eitoan foreign policy and with the principles of this republic

Therefore We advise the President of the Republic to convey to all foreign powers through public means, and by the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Ghastak, in representation of the will of the people of Eitoan do endorse the principles to the recent agreement between Holy Marsh, Aman and Shekana, and intend to cooperate fully with provisions regarding navigation in waters stated above in support of those principles.

Approved today by a vote of 34 yea, 0 nae, with 1 abstention.

Louis A. Herb

Chairman of the Ghastak

The resolution was shepherded through the upper house by veteran Free Democrat Mike W’cher, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Mr. W’cher had worked out most of the details of the statement earlier in the week with Civic Platform leader former Vice President Kenneth Haan, thought to be the lead candidate for Civic Platform in this year’s presidential election. As the draft fleshed in later in the week, key Socialist and Communist Ghastakers were brought into the discussion, and the wording was refined. Observers in Vladarsik believe the strategy was necessary to avoid going overboard in stating any specific action in the south, but was made possible when the prominence of Holy Marsh in the pact became known, defraying objections from the more radical left that such a statement could be seen elsewhere in Greater Dienstad as advancing parochial Eitoan interests.

In her comments before the passage of the resolution, National Democrat Theresa Elear explained her hesitancy to take a stand on the situation in the south. “It is too early to set a toe in those troubled waters.” she said, further stating “The Bay of Chains has always been in turmoil, and always will be. The average Eitoan has little in common with those peoples, and even less with Istoloa and it’s former colonies. Given the involvement of the great powers in the area, our best policy is to let then and their proxies settle matters, rather than taking steps that could end in loss of Eitoan lives”.

Mrs. Elear was hissed by several leftist Ghastakers after her address, an uncharacteristically harsh response in the normally staid body. Chairman Herb gravelled the meeting back to order and admonished those members causing the ruckus.

TANGATAREHUA TO ABOLISH MARRIAGE

9th February 2022
ImageImageImageImage

TAMAKI
Parliament has overwhelmingly voted in favour of a bill to abolish the institution of marriage in Tangatarehua, following a heated debate over the possible legalisation of same-sex marriage.

Image
Marriage is set to become a thing of a past, with the government abolishing all laws pertaining to it

The landmark bill passed with a nearly two-third majority with 188 lawmakers voting in favour, while only 102 voted against it.

The bill had originally been intended to remove all references to gender in existing marriage legislation, as part of the Liberal Party's campaign pledge to legalise same-sex marriage but ended up being amended into a bill that completely abolishes the legal concept of marriage altogether.

The original bill would likely have passed with support from the Liberal Party and their coalition partners the Democratic Party but gained support from the Communist Party, Green Party, Libertarian Party and People's Party following an amendment to do away with marriage altogether.

"This isn't entirely what we had planned, however I'm still happy with this outcome," Said Prime Minister Ngaire Roimati after the votes were counted. "Our goal was to bring equality to LGBT citizens and ultimately this bill delivers on that goal. If you can't marry someone you love then there's no point having marriage in the first place. Now everyone is equal again."

The amendment was suggested by Petera Kauri of the Atawhai (Conservative) Party, presumably as a poison pill amendment which backfired.

"If this bill passes, then we just open the door for absolute anarchy," He said during the debate. "It'll lead to people marrying their pets, marrying their cars, their jobs, their computers. And we live in a country where polygamy is legal so it's not like marriage means much anything anyway. I say, the government should just do away with marriage altogether."

Calling his bluff, the bill was amended to just that after a motion from Whakapaipai (Libertarian) Party MP Ruiha Paora who said that "The Conservative Party have, entirely by accident, raised an excellent point. There is no reason why marriage should be the government's concern."

The amendment gained considerable support from several far left parties, with Communist Party leader Whetu Ruiha calling marriage "A western imperialist sham, forced upon our culture by foreign vultures."

Meanwhile the two Tangatarehua Huihuinga MPS, who had both come to Parliament wearing T-shirts that said "Homosexuality is unnatural" soon saw their own planned stunt backfire as the debate completely turned away from the merits of same-sex marriage and instead focussed on the merits of marriage itself.

The Most Honourable Rangatira has meanwhile indicated that he will sign the bill into law, while the bill saw no objections from the upper house.

"This bill does not destroy marriage as a religious tradition," He said. "Those who choose to go through such ceremonies and who choose to promise each other that they will love each other forever will still be free to do so. But from now on the Imperial Government will no longer be involved in arbitrating or regulating such actions."

188 votes FOR
  • Ropu Ripera [Liberal Party] - 148
  • Manapori [Democrats] - 25
  • Ropu Kominiti [Communist Party] - 7
  • Whakapaipai [Libertarians] - 4

NEW HEMETT JOINT MILITARY BASE COMPLEX TO BECOME SECOND LARGEST IN GOLDEN THRONE
News of the expanded base complex is joined by the renaming of the state's capital, Leopoldton, to Fedoroton — in celebration of Free Killia's imperial benefactor.

DEMAIO, F.D. — Field Marshal Ambrose W. Longstreet stamped a new bill passed by the Free Killian House and Senate that certifies a 99-year lease awarded to the Golden Throne over the entire State of New Hemett. Although the bill took almost a week to move through the Senate floor and was the subject of several public protests around the country, its signing into law represents the clearing of a major obstacle to the Fuermak in its efforts to solidify its defense of the Free Killian Republic. The bill included wording on the renaming of Leopoldton in honor of His Imperial Majesty Fedor, as well as details on a new large arms order placed to equip another expansion of the Free Killian Army. It is the most significant legal defense package put together and passed since the ceasefire signed between the Ordenite Reich and the Golden Throne earlier this year.

According to sources within the Killian legislature and military, the main purpose of the law is to give the Golden Throne the legal privileges necessary to turn the islands of New Hemett into a secure multi-branch base complex capable of withstanding an amphibious and/or aerial invasion, as well as provide for Macabéan and Killian defenses on the mainland in case of a renewed strategic military invasion.

Although details on the base and the forces to be deployed within it are scant due to the extreme secrecy practiced by the Ejermacht and Imperial Bureaucracy in these sorts of matters, it is known that the development includes a colossal expansion of military port facilities across the northern side of the largest island. Previously, a Macabéan fleet group was headquartered in Leopoldton, facing the eastern Ordenite coastline and susceptible to aerial attack. It's reasonable to suspect that apart from the significant number of personnel deployed to New Hemett, this growth will also manifest in the number of air defense batteries, systems, and support bases needed to defend the enlarged garrison. It is also known that the Laerihans intends to increase its own presence on the island, with the objective of making New Hemett its primary base of operations in the Free Killian Republic by the middle of next year. While less is known about the Ejermacht's interests in New Hemett, their own strength is likely to increase even if the Kríermada feels that it can defend the island with an enlarged contingent of naval infantry, known as terkios.

Smaller bills have preceded this one to lease comparatively minor enlargement of lease claims related to other bases throughout the country. But even the largest, the expansion of military facilities in Julian on the western coast, pale in comparison to the expanded lease agreement over New Hemett. The granting of an entire state is surely unprecedented, although discussion around the new law has all kept to mind the unprecedented times the Republic sees itself in. Incapable of defending against the Ordenite Reich on its own, at least while the Golden Throne rebuilds the Killian Armed Forces, giving the Fuermak the space its needs to guarantee the defensive needs of a sovereign Killian Republic is widely seen as the best option available to the ailing country.

Over 20 million imperial personnel are now in need of logistical and combat support on mainland Free Killia. The majority of these forces are concentrated within the southern states, north of the demilitarized zone that flows on either side of the new South Killian Frontier. These ground forces continue to swell as units recently returned from Gholgoth and now in New Empire are based in Killia. New Hemitt will act as the nucleus of the Golden Throne's largest defensive buildup outside of its mainland and New Empire.

Much of New Hemett will now be under a mixed law code, where most of the local civil laws will remain in place and exercised by local civil institutions, but where an overarching new military legal framework will inevitably seep into most locals' daily lives. The joint military base complex of Arras, the most largest base complex in the Golden Throne and what the installations of New Hemett will approximate, offers clues on what that will look like. Civilian neighborhoods will be subject to nightly curfews and specific local levies aimed at improving and maintaining the road and aerial infrastructure of the state. High crimes against permanent Macabéan base personnel will be judged by imperial courts and defendants found guilty in these trials will serve their punishment within the Golden Throne.

New Hemett has been a land of military bases for a very long time and, so, much of it is sparsely populated. What is populated tends to have high concentrations of military families. For these people, life under a special military zone may not change much from how it's already lived. But, there are many non-military-related civilians on the island as well and adjustment to the new reality may prove difficult for them. The bill signed by Longstreet includes provisions for an imperial subsidy to families seeking relocation to the mainland if a local civil court finds that their decision to move was significantly affected by the expansion of the military base. The Imperial Bureaucracy has reaffirmed this obligation and formalized it via an addendum, ratified by both parties, to the Most Valued Ally Treaty signed between the two governments earlier this year.

Leopoldton is likely to be the most affected. Symbolizing the changes, the city will officially be known as Fedoroton pending a formal change of name issued by the city council. It joins Fedorograd in Krasnova, Fedoroville in Holy Panooly, and Fedoría in Nicaro as cities renamed in celebration of their liberator, His Imperial Majesty Fedor I. A large, bustling port city with important markets within the commercial trade goods and financial sectors, as well as within tourism and general services, its large population of 14 million will face some of the greatest challenges in growing accustomed to new rules.

As the Fuermak has already settled within Fedoroton and sees it as the most important cargo port on the eastern coast, it could not be left out of the lease agreement. For the ease of implementing new administrative features to make possible the elevated security requirements necessary for the base complex, Fedoroton must fold under the same overarching military framework. This includes adherence to nightly curfews that affect thousands of businesses that operate during those hours.

Some locals, like Anna, a 23-year old woman from the north side of the city, see the new agreement as a major infringement of their rights as Free Killians and as a significant inconvenience to them. "Just because the Nazis threaten us on our doorstep doesn't mean that we should sacrifice some of the very freedoms that our government is purporting to defend from them. It just doesn't make any sense to me. We should be able to live our lives as we see fit without government, let alone a foreign military entity, decide when I'm back home by and what I'm doing at night. Plus, this is only the start. Mark my words, within the year they'll have legislated some new bullshit local laws through their bullshit joint city council to further clamp down on our liberties for the sake of their bullshit 'military security,'" she told us, raising her hands to form quotation marks at the very end.

Others, like Richard, 47, understand the new agreement as a necessary, albeit difficult, compromise for the sake of national security. He told interviewers, "Look, should the Republic be able to defend itself on its own? Yes. But, bad leadership all of these years has taken its toll on us and the Nazis aren't a forgiving bunch. They'll snatch our freedom away in an instant, like they did in the south, if it weren't for the Macabéan emperor and his army. So if they need a larger military base for that, so be it. Let's just make sure that soon enough we can stand on our own two feet and they can go ahead and leave."

Last year's Ordenite invasion and the consequent loss of its two southernmost states, and parts of two others, have taken a toll on the Killian psyche. For a nation like Killia, accustomed to the high of the 2010s when it had been the Republic and not the empire that saved the other, devolving into its new malleable ally-but-subordinate status represents the nadir of its national image. The loss of territory to the Ordenite Reich is considered a national shame to be avenged. And although most Killians still see the Golden Throne as the country's most important military and economic ally, there is a growing sentiment that the Macabéans are overreaching in this latest evolution of the two countries' relationship with each other. While the Golden Throne is seen as a crucial partner in the short-term, resentment to its imperial paternalism creeps in at the edges. If it's accepted now it's because of the circumstances.

As a tactic to balance the newly awarded privileges over New Hemett to the Golden Throne, the new law includes a number of obligations owed by the empire to the Republic. The first is to fulfill an expanded arms order to equip a Free Killian Army expanding from 500,000 personnel to 5 million within the next year. The second is to employ only Killian labor for base expansions throughout the country through a program known as Labor-For-Homes. This program will see millions of displaced Killians temporarily mobilized for base expansion and reconstruction projects throughout the country, where they are offered paid-for lodging and a salary before they are relocated to somewhere near their reconstruction location of origin. Labor-For-Homes hopes to alleviate some of the poverty in the refugee camps, while also stimulating the shattered Killian economy as the country picks up the pieces from the war. The third is a controversial provision within the agreement that requires the Imperial Bureaucracy of the Golden Throne to file a criminal and civil case against the former ownership and management of Valo'Kap Consortium.

A criminal and civil lawsuit against Valo'Kap has been quietly worked within the offices of the Imperial Bureaucracy's equivalent of a justice department, but no formal documentation has been made available to the public yet. Prosecutors say that all relevant material will be released to relevant parties when formal charges are made, and that a significant subset of this material will be made available to the wider public, although elements remain highly classified due to their relevance to Killian and imperial security. Many, including many Killian politicians, have accused of the Imperial Bureaucracy of purposefully dragging their feet through the mud to avoid confronting the local Council of Tarn over its claims against former executives of Valo'Kap and its subordinate firms.

Tarn is considered a free city within the Golden Throne's imperial federation, and although it ultimately answers to His Imperial Majesty like any other federal subject it nevertheless holds certain rights guaranteed by treaty. These include extensive liberties around local laws and regulations that make possible the city's primary industry, which consists of hundreds of private military contractor firms and a network of support markets. These latter nodes include weapons distribution and manufacturing, equipment manufacturers and distributors, as well as strong banks capable of financing long-term military operations, and an important service sector. This extensive economy is sustained in large part by that core of security firms, and Tarn has turned into their capital only because informally the arrangement between city and empire was designed to offer these firms a safe haven from governments seeking to punish them for taking contracts against their interests. Over the years this arrangement has formalized through the evolution of Tarn's legal code.

In short, prosecuting the former executives and management of Valo'Kap will prove to be quite the challenge for the Imperial Bureaucracy. It is therefore very significant that the new Killian law formally obligates its ally, the Golden Throne, to seek criminal and civil restitution for the crimes committed by Valo'Kap Consortium during their contract with the government of the Killian Republic.

Perhaps, then, between the training and arming of a new, stronger Killian Army, the massive fiscal transfer from imperial taxpayers to local laborers, and the guarantee of a criminal and civil case against Valo'Kap Consortium, the Golden Throne has shown its commitment to a stronger Killian Republic capable of guaranteeing its own sovereignty and independence, but also consider the liberation of the lost states of West Tenet and South Lomec. And, that in those future wars, it will be able to count on a Macabéan military well positioned in the Republic to assist its ally in restoring its former position of glory among world governments.

As Field Marshal Longstreet said in a brief written statement to the Killian people, "We ensured that Fedor's empire remained whole less than a score of years ago, and now they are here to make us whole again too."

Her Majesty, Queen Diane Brisdor II, in 1997. Coronation Year

This year, the glorious year of 2022 marks the Silver Jubilee for Her Majesty, Queen Diane Brisdor II. Since 1997, Queen Diane has ruled over the Grand Kingdom of Phibeta into a modern age of peace and harmony within the region. Under her reign, the kingdom though small has been stronger than ever, with the support of the commonwealth behind her. In this era of the loss of the once-great Phibetan Empire, on an island that is now divided into four separate nations, Queen Diane has been a light of inspiration to all peoples in Phibeta and her commonwealth.

She succeeded the late King Clarence VII in 1997 after his death early on in the year after reigning for thirty years, since 1967. Diane was born in the same year as the first daughter of the king. In her youth, she has shown a fascination for the arts and literature, being one of the top students at Chelsea Preparatory School. In the 1980s, she began her military service after secondary school, where she served as captain of the 12th Armoured Cavalry, where she showed prowess as a tank commander and master tactician on the field of battle, serving in the small Gilligan Isles War with a foreign power. And a good thing too, considering that the empire has slowly crumbled to the point where the Island of Great Phitannia were split into separate nations, this was a major boost to morale and patriotism. In 1991, he married Lord Walter Pibbson of the house of Schultzstien who gave birth to their first and only child, Princess Olivia. When Diane ascended the throne in 1997, her first royal decree was to provide foreign aid to the fledgling nation of AHSCA which has recently declared independence the year prior. She was an outspoken supporter of the independence movement. She would be one of the first heads of state to recognize the new nation.

As the 2000s rolled around, Her Majesty continues to play a role in politics, as one of the last monarchs that have a voice in parliament, she still wields the power to call a fresh election, though does so under the advice of the prime minister or the leader of the opposition. Today, her power though powerful has not been used in years. She has seen her fair share of international crises, wars, different prime ministers, and a changing national electorate. She stands as a tradition in a sea of reformation. A familiar figure in politics in a large ever-changing political melting pot. She is a reliable head of state, and an important figure in Phibeta and the commonwealth nations.

Throughout the late 2010s, the empire might be gone, but support for the monarchy has continued to thrive, and this year, celebrates the 25 years that she has ruled over the kingdom and the commonwealth. The festivities of the day will include a birthday celebration for the Queen in March, and in June, a jubilee party will take place at Kensington Palace on the invitation of all royal families or heads of state followed by a military review on the palace parade grounds as well as a naval review down at The Northhead Royal Naval Academy to continue further showcase modern naval technology and naval tradition. Commonwealth Day is said to be the biggest celebration of Phibeta yet.

“I congratulate Her Majesty for her glorious jubilee celebration,” says Prime Minister Douglas Sousa. “Even in this age of a fallen empire, dissolution of Great Phitannia, and our overall influence fallen around the world, Her Majesty has seen stability within the realm and commonwealth. No major wars, no constitutional crises, no coups or revolutions in her lifetime, unlike other nations. Long may she continue to reign over us, and long may Phibeta continue to regrow like a phoenix!”

Long reign Her Majesty, Queen Diane II. May God save our gracious queen!

OPINION COLUMN: The Rise of Neo-Nationalism

Submitted by: Kevin Hutchinson, MP for Pran

The lands that once were the Phibetan Empire, are no more. It is a statement of fact. The Union of Great Phitannia Pact has dissolved, creating three new nations in its wake. It is clear that Phibeta no longer wields power and prowess. The power that once defeated Abetton in 1861, the power that has ruled the Cartune Isles for centuries, the power that created the Raj of Xofrautan, is no more. Phibeta’s great empire no longer rules the seas. But yet, there are those who call for the reinstatement of the empire, reconquer the lands that we once held, humiliate other powers to control their lands and interests, and become once again Great Phitannia.

There has been a rise in nationalism and nationalistic fervor. Even members of parliament have been elected as members of the Nationalist and Imperialist parties. Even members of the royal family have expressed nationalist desires to reconquer the lands that they once coveted. Why is there a surge in nationalism in an age where the supremacy of any kind is no longer acceptable and looked down upon in the international community?

There are a few answers to this, one of which is nostalgia. Many old folks that are alive will remember the Phibetan Empire in its basking glory. Its height was in the 1950s during the post-war era. The Cartune Isles just started their campaign for independence, and we failed to secure the holding as our own. Following that were numerous colonies declaring their independence and one by one, the empire begins to crumble. Not even the island of Greater Phitannia was safe. Isla Exilia, an island for exiled leaders and prisoners declared itself a new third republic in 1972 taking advantage of the falling empire. The Areas known as Sigmavania and Kappania were declared itself new nations, and Phibeta, once the largest island empire, is now one of many nations on Greater Phitannia.

This nostalgia for the good old days fuels the conversation of nationalism. The idea of Great Phitannia once again in the power of Phibeta and Her Majesty’s government. Not only on the island, but across the globe. Phibeta had one of the largest empires in the world, but now that power has greatly diminished. The nationalists want to bring that glory and splendor back, even if it means bullying and conquering the coveted lands and others that would get in the way of Phibetan conquest.

There is no harm in being patriotic and loyal to the crown, as many as there are Phibetans who join the forces and civil service, the age of empire is over and the age of nationalism should be too. Instead of wanting to conquer the lands, we should continue to work with our allies. We should work on reuniting Great Phitannia through diplomatic and peaceful means. As Phibetan hearts belong to the many, the world embraces for peace and prosperity from Phibeta to Cartoonia. Let us continue to work together for a better future, rather than force peace upon others who do not want it.

Royal Opera Company Revives Old Opera From The Post-Peninsula War Era of 1861

The Weston Royal Opera Company are pleased to announce the first show of the 2022-2023 season, Mrs. Laura Jenkins’ Opera “The Butcheress of Sauville”.

This opera from 1863 is a piece of heavy pro-Phibeta propaganda following the aftermath of the Peninsula Wars between Phibeta and Abetton. It provides commentary on the politics of serfdom and slavery that once had a grasp on the region. It is a story that follows sailor Johann Pharage (a personification of Phibeta, first performed by Tenor, Otello Arola) as he takes an interest in an orphanage run in Sauville, the capitol of Abetton, by a butcher named Bella Reynolds (a stand-in for Queen Beatrix, the monarch of Abetton during that war. First performed by soprano, Darcey Wood) who takes in orphans off the streets and set them to work in her butcher shop. What happens during the opera is horrific and very much unthinkable for its time, but it seemed justified given the previous war. Themes of Cardinal charity, patriotism, human consciousness, and cannibalism are present in this opera that was written by the librettist, Fiorenza Rutolo.

"The Butcheress of Sauville" not only mixes the art of music with the regional political scene but also with historical commentary of Phibeta’s past prior to 1863, including an orphanage scheme that was a facade for child exploitation. It was first performed by the Phibetan National Opera Company at the Simpson Opera House in Riddenshire and made its way to the Royal Opera House at Lester Gardens in the West End of Weston. The opera was riding off the patriotic fervor of the time after the victory over Abetton, which meant it was met with rousing cheers and success. Subsequent performances throughout the late 19th and early 20th Centuries were met with indifference or sometimes disgust, as many have grown to be indifferent to regional politics or wanted to reconcile with Abetton after their defeat at the hands of Phibeta and Katase. An assassination attempt on Mrs. Laura Jenkins’ life at an 1878 performance in Railton and a terrorist threat in the 1960s by the Isla Independencia group at the Weston Opera House has made the performance of this opera pretty much nonexistent, all except the overture, which is now an orchestral standard for all major orchestras in Phibeta.

When the opera company director, Mr. Alexander Karinsky was deciding what to produce in December 2021, he remembers hearing the stories of his great great great grandfather, a commanding officer of the Phibetan Grenadiers during the Peninsula Wars of 1861, and remembered seeing concept art in the Opera Archives. This happened to be concept art for the set of the opera. In his vision, he wanted to remember the atrocities of the past.

“It is the only way we remember the past, through the power of art,” says Mr. Karinsky. “Just as Mrs. Jenkins wrote music to make sure no one forgets the atrocities (no matter how exaggerated it may be) and it often resonates today with many aggressive nations in the region and around the world trying to trample on the rights of youth”.

Further information including music directors, play directors, and actors will be revealed soon. Stay tuned for more information.

WAR IN RALKOVIA

Arcaenian and Allied forces invade the Ralkovian Regime

Image
A Regime military headquarters building in Barakov burns following heavy Arcaenian bombardment.

HYPERIA - Following months of military buildup King Frederick III has ordered the start of a war against the Ralkovian Regime. Following hours of massed air, missile, and artillery strikes on Regime targets aimed at decapitating the Regime's leadership and military forces Arcaenian, Eitoan, and Marshite forces positioned on the Regime's southeastern border began a ground invasion into the Regime early this morning, seizing large amounts of territory across a broad front in the first several hours of the invasion in what will be the start of a massive push to capitulate the Regime.

Addressing the Arcaenian Reichstag this this morning Chancellor Sebastian von Sydow declared that "Arcaenian and allied forces have moved to invade and destroy the Ralkovian Regime and permanently remove it a threat to the free people of Greater Dienstad". Sydow emphasized that the invasion was a "preventative war" , aimed at finishing off and destroying the remains of the military of the former Ralkovian Empire before they could fully regain their strength and pose a threat to reconquer the former territory of the Ralkovian Empire. Sydow sought to temp down expectations that the war would be a quick and decisive war with few casualties, warning that "the days and weeks again will be a brutal and titanic struggle"

Press restrictions imposed by the Arcaenian military barred reporting the precise numbers or locations of the advancing forces. But Arcaenian officers have indicated in the preceding days that the hundreds of thousands of Arcaenian and other allied soldiers who entered the regime, along with hundreds of thousands of other troops still in the Ralkovian Federation, intend to fan out across the barren landscape of the regime's southern territory over the next few days and push west to capture the Regime held cities of Kravak and Urar.

Should the Arcaenians succeed in collapsing the Regime the ground forces of Arcaenia and its allies will face the same challenge they faced after the first Ralkovian war, that of rebuilding a barren and war-torn country with no legitimate government and holding together a society rocked by severe religious, political, and ethnic differences.

War in Ralkovia:
Seventh Army Advances Along the Mrahilyow

Image
Collateral Damage from Shelling, Tolyurapol, Regime Ralkovia

Velarama, Regime Ralkovian Territory

Initial resistance to Eitoan and Alliance advances in the early part of Operation Marble in the northern Eitoan sector adjoining the Arcanean advance has given way to an orderly, yet accelerated pullback of Regime defenders throughout then entire segment of that attack. It has been confirmed that the Fourth Infantry Division of the Seventh Army, part of the enhanced Eitoan Force PF has exceeded schedule ten miles inland from the southern bank of the Mrahilyow, breaking through stubborn rear guard resistance as Ralkovian armor reposition closer to the Dikk River port of Urar in an attempt to avoid envelopment by the Seventh Army and the Arcanean IV Panzer Corps. Along the route Eitoan armor had moved slowly, following demining and clearance operations, with large convoys making use of cleared portions of Route 820. This morning the press pool was notified that most of the city of Kraskany had fallen to the Fourth Infantry in an overnight assault, and that the intersection of Route 820 and B-32 had been secured. Fighting continues at Krasany airport.

In Velarama, typical of many other towns that had fallen to the Alliance in the early days of Project Marble, life is slowly returning to normal. Still under martial law within city limits, and under a 7PM to 9AM curfew, most of the day’s activities center around obtaining food and commuting to work for those employed outside the house or in the dismal slave like industrial complexes typical of the small town and urban landscape throughout Regime Ralkovia. Here the emphasis for the average Ralkovian is obtaining sustenance, far removed from the concerns of Regime overlords or their predecessors, the nobility. Although it is reported that food had become scarcer in the buildup to Operation Marble, it seems to have had little impact on the already appalling diet of the average Ralkovian. Eitoan MPs patrolling the city have kept a tight reign on black market profiteering, with crackdowns lately on much valued commodities such as cigarettes, cabbages and potatoes. Almost immediately after the Seventh rolled through Velarama some of the larger estates were looted of luxury items, alcohol and electronics as most of the Regime police melted away following the defenders toward the Dikk. The remaining constabulary, estimated at about 30% of the pre war force has been allowed to continued under Eitoan control, although without firearms. It is expected that civilian control of Velarama as well as the other cities, towns, villages and townships will pass through to local councils in the first three months following the conclusion of Project Marble, although has not been verified either at Project Marble headquarters, or by Eitoan Occupation Forces Ralkovia in Belovo. Liaison teams from the Federation of Ralkovian States are expected her in Velarama by the end of the week, but these are expected to be skeleton crews until active Regime resistance is confirmed clear in the former frontier sector.

Conditions in outlying rural areas appear better, much of the fighting having bypassed them to date. In locations that had not been too badly despoiled in the First Ralkovian War, laborers on the larger estates appear better fed than their more urban counterparts, and stores in crossroad hamlets better stocked. Through luck, the large Cierashkovich livestock processing operation on the ducal estate of the same name, provider of much of the beef and mutton in the southern Regime territory fell to the Eitoans intact. A deal was swiftly reached with Duke Cierashkovich at his estate, held under house arrest by the Regime as part of their degradation of the former nobility under the Raskov Empire, whereby the designated market for the plant was established for former Regime cities and adjacent areas under Alliance control, and for the Federal cities of Barsakv and Bar’agul. Further west of Velarama large transport aircraft and helicopters with Medical Support and Evacuation Corps and Uniformed Support Corps insignia have been seen as larger, more specialized field hospitals have been under construction closer to the fighting. Similarly, convoys of truck have been moving with supplies for medical support westward along secondary roads. Eastbound traffic has been light.

Although the area had been taken by Force PF early in the fighting, sporadic mortar and gunfire can be heard, in most cases northwest of Velarama. With the larger towns under tight curfew, casualties there have been reported as light, with most of the injuries and deaths incurred on Eitoan supply convoys and occasionally small patrols in remote areas. Eitoan Special Operation Forces have been active in the area since the early days of the operation, and very little detail has been made available to the press pool about their activities. At Operation Marble headquarters in Belovo, General Lawrence Reitz has expressed cautious optimism about progress to date.

Socialist Front Runner Expresses Support for Marble

Kelso, Eitoan

After initial silence about Operation Marble, Kelso Mayor Kenneth Curtis has made clear his opinions about the Alliance moves in Ralkovia. Speaking at a press conference shortly after his statement announcing his candidacy in this year’s presidential election, Mayor Curtis said “I, along with all good, patriotic Eitoans back our young men and women as they battle for freedom in Ralkovia. There can be no doubt that all of us together, Socialists, Free Democrats, Civic Platform, others stand in the effort to bring down that bastion of tyranny known as the Ralkovian Regime. And I will conduct my campaign without regard to cheap partisan talking points in this regard. When it comes to our security and freedom, arguments have to end at the border. I call on my opponents in the June primary to do the same, indeed, for all candidates in all parties to do the same. There can be honest disagreements about taxes, about allocation of funds for roads, schools, and regulation, but when it comes to national security, defense of the nation comes first!”

Mr. Curtis is the first candidate declared in the Socialist primary, and is viewed as having a distinct advantage among the party’s urban base. His overwhelming victory in last year’s Kelso mayoral election has been seen as a sign of the popularity of his practical approach to municipal government, sometimes disparaged by the more militant members of his party. As yet no other major candidates have registered for the June primary, although some opposition has been heard from left wingers in the legislature. His popularity in Kelso, the nation’s largest city is seen as reflective of opinion throughout Eitoan’s central corridor, the broad swath of territories that constitute half of the electorate. If nominated Mayor Curtis will be seen as a presence reflective of the pragmatic approach favored by Eitoan voters, similar to President Shrdlu. Both are self made men, Shrdlu as a software entrepreneur, Curtis starting out as a bricklayer. This too appeals to Eitoan voters. Their most likely opponents from Civic Platform, former Vice President now party leader in the Ghastak Kenneth Haan is seen by many as more of an ordinary politician, although he has been credited with being an early advocate of closer ties to The Golden Throne in the waning days of the preceding Ben-Joseph administration. At this time Mr. Haan has not declared his intention, although an announcement is expected later this month.

Arcaenia Unveils New Solar Laser Weapon

Image
Pictured: Arcaenia's solar laser fires during a test over the Sea of Crowns

In a shocking accouncemnt earlier this evening General Karl Bolle of the Arcaenian Space Command revealed that Arcaenia has successfully developed and fielded a solar laser weapon. Dubbed the sonnengewehr or "sun gun" the weapon is a apparenlty a type of solar pumped laser which consists of a circular parabolic mirror over 3 kilometers in diameter which collects and focuses sunlight through a conical pump cavity onto an Nd:YAG laser crystal array. Although the specific beam power of the weapon was not specified General Bolle claimed that the weapon was in the "yottawatt class" and has the power to "boil an ocean" or "evaporate a city in seconds". The weapon can also be used for tactical operations with the ability to vary the beam diameter from a "city destroyer" beam 100 meters in diameter down to a "surgical strike" beam less than a meter in diameter using an adaptive deformable mirror assembly which steers the weapon. The weapon was designed by SDI Space Systems and was assembled in orbit over the last several months in complete secrecy and is intended to be the first in a constellation of solar laser weapons.

When asked how Arcaenia, which is not a particular large or rich nation compared to the major military and economic power of Greater Dienstad, could afford such a weapon Bolle responsed that the entire rest of the Arcaenian military had been dissolved and the entire yearly budget of the Arcaenian Army, Navy, and Air Force had been redirected to fund the solar laser constellation. Bolle also added that the deployment of the solar laser had faced protests from members of the Arcaenian government, military, and public at large but added that several "test firings" of the weapon, including one test on the Arcaenian parliament building, had "eliminated this problem". Bolle further warned that any Arcaenian citizen who complains that their tax dollars are being spent on such weapons would have their location of residence subjected to a future test of the solar laser. Bolle also claimed that in addition to a weapon of mass destruction the solar laser would have numerous "humanitarian and environmental" uses which include vaporizing threatening icebergs and evaporating rivers or lakes that are in danger of flooding.

Future of the Sugar Islands, Abetton's Last Colony

Image
by Amelia Constance VanBraun

Off to the South and East of Sauville lies the Sugar Islands, locally known as La Korala Insularo has long been a topic of discussion in the mainland and locally within the islands. The lands have been under the Abetton Kingdom since 1858 when the island were won in the South Seas War against Marche-Noire and Brasillistan and became a major boone for Abetton both in good and ill. Notably, it opened Abetton's access to the Southern Seas, beautiful but very turbulent in the days of sail and steam and even today with modern technology can still be tricky to navigate. But vital, as these seas open to other areas of Greater Dienstad and the world beyond as well as what has helped develop Abetton's Southern Port cities into economic powerhouses. Agrarian rurual cities on swamp and marshlands became hubs that could filter goods to the prairie lands, the mountain towns and of course relieve the growing congestion of Sauville's ports that were happening in the mid 19th century.

Unfortunately, the dark side of this colony came with other issues, namely Abetton's dark history with slavery and the slave trade. Local natives often became subjects to slavery and brutal racial discrimination. The era of apartheid that fell after the War with Phibeta in the 1870s, the islands were ground zero for that until the practiced was abolished in the 1940s. History is that, history, in the past but not forgotten and now a new question continues, what will become of this territory, this "colony." The 21st century is one of great progress but many today still are coming to terms with the past of their nations and Abetton is no exception. Does a nation still have a colony when it's been working over the decades to better its society? Many are asking that question today as the future of the islands is coming into question. With Her Royal Highness Princess Peri in a few short years set to wed into that island's high family, in centuries past they were known as Chiefs or Lords, today the are considered just "indigenous officials" though for the locals the old titles remain even with the Island technically under command of Lady Charlotte of Sauville, the niece of His Majesty the King, one day the islands will be under command of Her Royal Highness, Princess Peri, if she indeed continues with the arranged marriage, certainly an old custom indeed.

But it's not as cut and dry as that, there has long been a pro-independence movement in the islands, and on the other end of the spectrum, there's been a pro-intergration movement. Currently the islands are still recognized as a dependent territory, they don't have full representation in Parliament, though they do enjoy benefits of Abetton society, such as free travel between the islands and mainland. They still pay taxes to the king and her residents serve in the armed forces. Attempts to poll the local populous often come up split 50-50 about which road they want to take, become a free nation or be fully integrated into the Kingdom as a rightful domain, under the subject of a Lord and Lady, which is looking increasingly likely in the near future. What the future holds of the Sugar Islands remains to be seen but it won't be long before Parliament or The King takes up the subject and makes the decision.

New Calendar and Dating System Vote Initiated

Mar'si, Holy Marsh- The Arch-Bishop has announced that following several recent public votes on important matters, and in consultation with the Favored Shrines, another vote shall be held. This time, the subject shall be the current dating system in place across the Theocratic Matriarchy. It has been internally a conflict for some time, and as a result the Arch-Bishop has seen fit to finally solve this issue.
The year, according to the official Marshite calendar, is 2138 ALW, or After Long-War. The year zero used by most Marshites is the Cultist assault on Mar'si that started the Long War. It is often shortened to LW. The date, according to those outside of Holy Marsh, is generally considered 2038 CE or AD with the year zero being the Judiac-Catho religious figure Jesus Christ's passing. This calendar sees no official use within Holy Marsh, and is seen only in a few immigrant communities.

While ALW is the official calendar term, others are often in play. The oldest calendar and the one still used by certain Shrines and even the First Cathedral's official time authority is the Marshite Era, where the year zero is the establishment of the Marshite Church. In this calendar, it is 5123 ME. With the Long War over, there is a strong push and have been for over twenty years to go back to using this calendar, as it was the official calendar of standing for more than half of Marshite history.

There are still even more calendars in use. Most Shrines have an official calendar that uses important dates in their Shrine's history, with year zero often being the Shrine's inception. This has created a society where, while all people know the date as per the Church, different years are used internally. This is in addition to proposals for either the end of the Long War or The Shift being considered year zeroes as part of a new calendar.
The vote will put forward a batch of dates for general use.
2138 ALW (After Long War) is one of the options and is the currently used calendar date. It is favored in large part by those who still view the Long War as an ongoing affair.
5123 ME (Marshite Era) is in favor by those who think the Long War is over and we can/should 'return to normal', the conditions as they existed before the Long War.
30 VE (Victory Era) is proposed in general by those who agree that the Long War is over, but rather than a return to normal/old conditions it marks a new epoch and should be known as such.
24 PS(Post-Shift) supporters state that The Shift had a monumental impact on every facet of Marshite Society, larger even than the end of the Long War, and as a result marks a new era in history.

While the vote and discussion is centered on the dating system, some seee it as another proxy battle between internal factions regarding the direction of the Theocratic Matriarchy. The more conservative elements tend to support ALW or ME, while more progressive thinkers suggest VE or PS. This battle is also playing out in the growing debate over the 1921 Common Edict, the famous missive by Arch-Bishop Guirana who mandated the use of Common in published material available to foreigners, and Common speech when involved with foreigners. This led to the reduction in usage outside of the Theocratic Matriarchy of the proper Pushanian names and terms ofr a variety of positions and power structures. Many believe it worked in helping the faith spread by using terms that were easy for locals of many nations to understand, but for more than a hundred years a growing chorus has agitated against it. The dating system debate is seen by many as merely a skirmish in the ongoing battle between these factions.

The vote has started and will go on for three weeks.

Hurricane Season Begins With First Storm

AURORA - Wind, rain and flooding spread across all of Aurora Island as the first major storm in nearly two years to make landfall. After an unusually quiet period, worries that residents may be caught off guard, so a wide scale effort was immediately put to work to make sure citizens were alerted and preparations were made. UISDF quickly amassed supplies and readied equipment for all case scenarios that might occur with such an event. With the start of growing season, farmers worked to protect their crops but the full extent of damages and losses will have to be reported upon, fishing boats that were preparing for launch were quickly dry docked and finally perhaps least consequently so, Congress suspended meeting so delegates could return home. As predicted by UNIMO forecasters, the storm was strong, packing winds of 123 km/h (66 knots) and straddle across the island in an west-to-east direction, affecting major ports along the coast and inland villages, turning northward out to sea, avoiding the rest of the islands, though locally heavy rains were reported on Hoshino as result of the outer bands of the hurricane. Embassy island was also unaffected by the hurricane.

Heavy flooding and extensive in Port of Aurora and nearby villages forced folks to move further inland to guard against storm surge and Historic Dock 9 was completely wiped out. Fortunately, casualties are reported to be low, at 35, a handful indirectly from the storm, as it seems residents heeded the warnings and took immediate action to guard against the oncoming storm and resources are quickly being handed out to those most in need of them as UISDF rapidly moves around but the economic toll will be yet to seen. For now, AHSCA has not sought outside help but the Duchess is not ruling it out, depending on further fallout from the storm on agriculture and other imports.

Other island states are spraining to help, sending off duty police officers to volunteer for local law enforcement, carpenters for rebuilding and food and water to refresh supplies. In the face of this disaster, UNIMO and the Royal Government continues to remind people this storm season is expected to be active, and this is a good time to go over disaster plans and make sure you are prepared.

Preliminary Slates Set for Presidential, Ghastak Candidate Selection

Shrdlu Unopposed on Free Democrat Ballot, Sanders To Carry the Red Banner.

All Other Parties Face May, June Decisions.

As official announcements of candidacy have been filed for all five partes, election magistrates nationwide have confirmed all contenders for the presidency and full scale campaigning is now underway. Socialist voters will have a choice this year in the June 1st winner take all nationwide primary, with popular Kelso mayor Kenneth Curtis seen as the early front runner. Mayor Curtis, fresh from last year’s reelection to the helm of Eitoan’s largest city is popular across all segments of the Socialist base. In the past month he has dipped his toes in such concerns as foreign policy, seen as necessary to establish his credibility with regard to wider issues. Mayor Curtis has tacked to the center, and party operatives have become reconciled to a light touch on matters of doctrine. His business background is thought to be reassuring to those parts of the electorate that are sensitive to expansion of governmental programs, and wary of taxes. Three other candidates are in the Socialist race. Dasheznik Esther Henry, a member of the lower house from Berwyn’s east side is making a bid this year, going through with a candidacy from which she withdrew five years ago. Mrs. Henry has been a dependable Socialist during her Dashez tenure, voting the party line and is a veteran leftist old guard within the lower house. Another Dasheznik, Jennifer Magormack is also bidding for the presidency this year. Hailing from a lower income Kelso district, Miss Magormack appeals to an electorate of largely unskilled labor. Her presence on the ticket would be a bulwark against erosion of those voters toward the Communist candidate. Joining the fray for the Socialists is newcomer Zikmund Magnab, an importer from Kelso. Mr. Magnab served on the Kelso city council for a term ten years ago, and recently abandoned the hard right National Democrats for the Socialists, a surprising move. He is not expected to obtain a significant vote.

Civic Platform, to the right of the Free Democrats also have a June winner take all primary for the presidency. As expected, former Vice President Kenneth Haan is running. He currently serves in the Ghastak, the legislature’s upper house. His presence provides Civic Platform gravitas as they head into the fall election. Mr. Haan is credited with an early opening to The Golden Throne, a policy which President Shrdlu has continued and is now a fundamental of Eitoan foreign policy. Somewhat in opposition to this policy is challenger Jonathan Whiteford, a Kelso attorney. Mr. Whiteford has corralled the backing of several party leaders that were critical of Mr. Haan’s direction. Since his return to the Ghastak two years ago, however, Mr. Haan has remained in firm control of the party’s voting on national issues, and the enthusiasm of Civic Platform rank and file for Mr. Whiteford’s opinions is very much in doubt at this time. Completing the three way contest is Jeffrey S’rev, a District Court judge in Virden territory. Judge S’rev has expressed the need for greater investment in economic development outside the major cities, and has become more vocal in promoting this in the last few years. He could register a large protest vote, made more possible since President Shrdlu’s predecessor, Mr. Ben-Joseph left office five years ago.

The Communists will have a candidate certified by the party central committee on June 1st. This year operatives have squelched all opposition to their preferred choice, Brenda Sanders. She is a professor of Dienstadi Literature at the Stickney College of Arts and Sciences, participating in many demonstrations since gaining tenure at that post. While thought to lack the common touch of recent Communists bidding for the presidency, Her enthusiasm for the cause is unquestionable. In recent weeks she has gone on a nationwide tour, rallying the faithful to the red cause and introducing herself to them. Observers indicate that her shrillness and condescending tone are likely to limit her appeal to hard core leftists. The National Democrats will decide on a candidate at a June meeting of the party’s grand national command. Two are vying for the ballot. Ghastak bomb thrower Thersa Elear is expected to take the top spot. Following the party’s electoral disaster recently she has emerged as the leading spokesman for the far right. While viewed as distasteful across the board, her presence would test the appeal of those disturbed by increased immigration, particularly from the Tarao and Shartourn area. This has inflamed some passions in the coastal cities for the most part, but is not seen as important to the broader electorate. Elear's opponent is North Chillicothe Territory party activist Edward Ingersoll, owner of a B'runo accounting firm. His views are similar to Mrs. Elear.

Ghastak Candidate Selection Begins

National issues also come to the fore in the selection processes for the Ghastak. Elected by proportional representation of nationwide at large slates, this minor round year features 15 of the body’s 35 members. President Shrdlu’s Free Democrats hold a 15 seat plurality currently, followed by and often cooperating with the Socialists at 10 seats. Civic Platform has 5 Dashezniks, a result of their latest drubbing, with the Communists at 4. The National Democrats retain one lone seat, occupied by the very loudly opinionated Theresea Elear.

The Free Democrats’ process involves a May preferential primary, following which the committee of territorial chairs will meet to choose their slate in June. President Shrdlu and Ghastak Chair Louis Herb hope to grow the party’s Ghastak presence, potentially into an outright majority. Party insiders have said that the slate needs to speak with a clear voice regarding national domestic issues that have been important in recent elections. The Shrdlu administration has let proposals for alcoholic beverage reclassification die a natural death in the Legislature. Parents of school age children have viewed this favorably, but there have been persistent efforts on the part of some Civic Platform legislators to revive the issue. The Shrdlu administration has also been strict in enforcement of laws against secondary boycotts in labor disputes Although this position provides a vulnerability on the left, it has been popular in the business community and has strong Civic Platform support.

The Socialists will select their candidates on a binding primary in May. Party leaders are hoping to maintain their standing in the Ghastak in this minor round year. Voices have been heard within party conferences showing some sentiment for a variation in Eitoan’s foreign policy initiatives. While all three big parties hold the alliance with The Golden Throne as a given in foreign policy, disagreements exist regarding the degree to which Eitoan should lean toward the other major powers in Greater Dienstad. The Socialists can be expected to advocate for closer military cooperation with Holy Marsh in the Shartourn Sea region. The party is also likely to call for greater investment in early education, particularly in under-served areas. There have also been calls among the rank and file for increased limitations on foreign capital, particularly in strategic sectors of the economy. If the Ghastak slate were to come out with prominent measures on this issue, it could hobble Mayor Curtis’s message should he win the party’s presidential nomination.

Civic Platform will choose candidates for the Ghastak based on preferences voiced on a limited slate primary in May. Following the May primary the party’s council of territorial leaders to finalize a decision. Here Civic Platform also hopes to hold onto it’s existing seats. The tone of most of the primary candidates has been their ability to broaden party support, particularly among secular voters. Civic Platform has long been favored by religiously observant voters, responsive to a platform supportive of family values. But the party is hoping to broaden it’s appeal to the majority secular electorate. This year the party is expected to revisit several issues that have been a bone of contention in the past. Foremost among those is that of the soil conservation policies of the Shrdlu administration, still important to rural voters in the Central Corridor territories. Disagreement between barley and wheat growers had previously caused many wheat farmers to abandon Civic Platform in favor to the Free Democrats, but party committees in the Central Corridor are expected to make a renewed effort to garner votes in the barley belt this year. Chillicothe, North Chillicothe and Strakonice territories are in the minds of Civic Platform as they seek votes for their Ghastak slate this year. Foreign policy is also expected to see Civic Platform differentiate itself from the president and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Falkowski. Viewing Eitoan successes in backing off Ordenite support for a Raskov return in Ralkovia, foreign policy bigwigs in the party have taken a go easy approach toward outright contention with the Ordenite Reich. The attitude seems to be, behind the scenes in the words of one assistant to former Vice President Haan “sure, they’re generally unwelcome, but no need to kick over that hornet’s nest now”.

The Communists will have a binding primary in May, and are hoping to expand their representation in the upper chamber. Many candidates have moderated some of the more extreme positions in an appeal to lower middle income voters concerned about job loss. Although the Coastal territories have traditionally been infertile for the commies, they are expected to make a bigger effort there this year, targeting Blue Island and Dolton. The National Democrats are also facing a binding May primary this year. Most candidates are unknown to the general public, and the National Democrats continue to struggle to put forth ad coherent platform. The party is still suffering with the aftereffects of the Berwyn riots, and party leaders have continued to disavow any connection with pro-Ordenite elements that have been sentenced in the aftermath of that turbulence.

ARMISTICE IN RALKOVIA

Arcaenian and Allied forces sign armistice with the Ralkovian Regime

Image
The Regime city of Urar following it's capture by Arcaenian Forces after several days of heavy combat.

HYPERIA - Following five weeks of combat operations representatives from the Arcaenian and Eitoan government have signed an armistice agreement yesterday afternoon with the Ralkovian Regime which will end hostilities in Ralkovia. The armistice comes after the capture of the Regime held cities of Urar and Kravak by Arcaenian and Eitoan forces last week and the general collapse of Ralkovian resistance across the front, prompting the surviving elements of the leadership of the Ralkovian Regime to reach out to Arcaenian and Eitoan military high commands and indicate that they wished to seek out an armistice ending the conflict. Under the terms of the armsitice agreement the southern half of the Ralkovian Regime will be placed under Arcaenian and Eitoan occupation and will be integrated into the Ralkovian Federation. The northern portion of the Regime will remain under Ralkovian Regime control albeit in a disarmed and heavily demilitarized state. The Armistice and cease-fire are scheduled to go into effect 24 hours from the date of signature. Although the bulk of the Regime's military has surrendered reports from the front are that both Arcaenian and Eitoan forces are continuing to deal with isolated pockets of resistance from Regime forces who refuse to surrender. Addressing the Arcaenian Reichstag this this morning Chancellor Sebastian von Sydow declared that "The military mission to destroy the threat of the Ralkovian regime had been successful", and that the Regime had been "reduced to a rump state that will not pose a threat in the future". Although the task of destroying the Regime's military has been successful the Arcaenian and Eitoan forces now face the equally challenging task of rebuilding a nation that has been ravaged by a brutal war.

COMMONWEALTH NEWS BUREAU

Rhondda Premier Arrested On Corruption Charges

CCA.- It has been reported that a number of government officials of the Rhondda Colony, including Taoiseach Morrough Callaghan, were arrested and had charges of corruption levelled against them by the Commonwealth Colonial Authority.

The news comes as the latest development in the ongoing saga of the troubled colony, which has seen an uneasy peace since an insurgency there ended a decade ago when the CCA promised economic help. Since then, the colony's economic growth has been sluggish and the colonists have become increasingly frustrated as the expected aid failed to materialize. Reportedly there has been a growing number of new recruits to the insurgents' ranks, though they are lacking in equipment due to the destruction of their stockpile as part of the armistice agreements and the CCA's efforts in restricting the import of arms to the colony.

It is understood that a black market has thrived on Rhondda, enabling the insurgents and criminal elements to gain access to goods otherwise hard to come by. According to the statement issued by the CCA, a number of local government officials were accepting bribes to look the other way in addition to funnelling CCA funding and economic aid into private accounts.

The CCA has announced that an interim administer has been appointed to ensure that basic governmental functions continue.

Vadim Bezukhov in retrospect: Legacy and FRCP’s future

Image

Vyacheslav Kubiyovych
May 6th, 2022

After months of apparently worsening health, a leaked transcript of a sensitive meeting of the Principle Chairman with the Premier and attached Cabinet revealed that Principle Chairman Bezukhov has ‘made plans to to step down [from office]’ in the coming weeks. This occurred at approximately 19:03 CESTZ in one of the many chambers of the National Assembly Complex in the heart of Sevyich. The source for the meeting comes from a certain Afanasij Yaremchuk, political adjutant, who revealed a portion of the transcript to non-state media. Yaremchuk has since been imprisoned.

From the transcript, it can be inferred the meeting was over many delicate matters of state; particularly fixing the economic crisis, which has skyrocketed the inflation rate of the Czaslyudian Bill up nearly 40%, and rebuilding the critical infrastructure to our economy whose repair has either stagnated or never begun. During the meeting, Premier Eduard Serhiyenko had brought up removing unexploded ordnance from Vyten which may impede the repair of the road system there; according to a direct quote from the leaked transcript, Bezukhov responded, “[the bombs] will still be there by summer. I don’t care for it.”

Though it can be easily interpreted otherwise, this quote only gains importance when put in context with what has now been weeks of several signs of debilitating illness in the Principle Chairman. On March 11th, at an appearance before the National Assembly Bezukhov’s hands were visibly and uncontrollably shaking, such that state media cameras cropped the mishap out all but the live recording of the event. In events even before the Civil War, Bezukhov would frequently cancel or fail to show in public events and addresses without any given cause. Now, after months of comparatively unenthused governance, Bezukhov has stated that he does not intend on being in his position for much longer.

The question now falls onto what happens next. Bezukhov, though sometimes magnanimous (and the state media NNC let us know that frequently) and other times ruthless, would leave a great deal of issues in his wake if he were to leave-- from the myriad of humanitarian and financial issues to simply who will supersede him. At present, the new constitution states that “[the Principle Chairman] selects their successor and makes due preparations for the transfer of power, overseen by the current Premier, or failing that, a congregation organized by the National Assembly.” However, it does not presently appear the Principle Chairman has made clear that any member of his government is to succeed him, bringing in the opportunity for potential infighting in the coming time.

Risks aside, what could a fresh face bring to the Federal Republic? “It’s likely,” says Yaroslav Onyshchuk, political analyst and tenured professor at the Berozera Technical Academy, “that [the office of Principle Chairman] is going to be handed off to a high-ranking military official.” Due to the connectedness of the Principle Chairman’s office with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of War, he says, will almost guarantee that the Principle Chairman will pick one of their own rather than an outsider. “Because the drafters of the constitution didn’t think ahead and instead allowed themselves to be blinded by strong-man politics, they’ve allowed for the start of what could be a chain of events that allows the military an easy jump-off point for a military coup.” It seems inevitable, Onyshchuk says, that despite the gains in political and civil freedoms from the establishment of the Third Federal Republic, the government will revert into “unadultered and petty authoritarianism”, which he says has been the theme of the past sixty years for the Czaslyudian peoples.

DUCHY OF WINTERVALE, Analeuthian Feudal States - Update: March 18th - As of today, the Duchy of Wintervale has fallen, with the Duke and his family fleeing into the Principality of Aghavam. The microstate's current status remains unclear. As this is a developing story, further updates will be added once more information is available. The story as originally posted follows below.

An arms depot was breached by an organised attack force early on Friday morning on the outskirts of the City of Wintervale, located in the eponymous duchy, according to a press release from Conrad IV, Duke of Wintervale. In a later release, Duke Conrad attributed this attack to a faction known as the Analeuthian-Kozanian International Liberation Army (AKILA), believed to be a successor to two previous, allied political parties: the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Kozani (KDEK) and the Analeuthian Antifascist Alliance (3A), and further claimed that his estate was under siege and an attempt had been made on his life. (For live updates, see the full story, here.)

These events have thrust the long-running civil war in the Republic of Kozani back into the international spotlight, and the associated unrest that has spilled over into the neighbouring Analeuthian Feudal States. But for the average Dìenstadi reader, these names, events and acronyms most likely blend together into an interminable sea of acronyms, factions and warlords. Is there more to Kozani than bombed-out cities and refugee camps? Do the Analeuthian Feudal States really consist entirely of coffee, chocolate, bananas, and stately manor houses, perhaps with the odd brightly coloured tropical bird flying by?

For those of us who live here, of course, the situation is quite different. The city-state of Laurentia, for example (pictured above), is a fully modernised city with every first-world convenience one might want, comparable to any city in the region, and the prospect of it falling into the hands of armed revolutionaries is naturally concerning: the Republic of Kozani, too, once looked much like this, and none of us want to wind up living out of bomb shelters and tent cities. So how did we get here? The following is an attempt to provide a brief overview.

From its independence in 1926 until 2006, Kozani was a small, fully recognised presidential republic of 350 million citizens, governed from the port city of Whitechapel and located just north of the Theocracy of Holy Marsh and west of the Analeuthian Feudal States. The Analeuthian Feudal States in turn, occupying a large landlocked area north of Mahdah and west of Mokastana, were—and still are—sixty-seven individual monarchies, duchies, counties and baronies, along with the Free City of Laurentia, established between two hundred and five hundred years ago with the collapse of the ruling colonial power in the area.

In the years prior to 2006, Kozani had seen a significant rightwards shift politically, most notably including the foundation of the far-right, ultranationalist Kozanian National Front (EMK) in 1992. The election of conservative President Dzhemak Sari in 2002 thus came as no surprise. By the time of the 2005 parliamentary elections, however, President Sari's party had almost completely lost favour, and many of its voters—depending on their sectarian affiliation—instead backed either the EMK or its Islamist rival party, the People's Islamic Movement (ITH). In the runup to the 2006 presidential election, the Sari administration had no chance of retaining power democratically. Perhaps to stave off this defeat, in August—a month before the election was to be held—President Sari declared martial law and suspended the Constitution of Kozani, cancelling the upcoming elections. Widespread protests erupted, during which he was assassinated by EMK militants. This is generally considered the beginning of the Kozanian Civil War.

The Kozanian armed forces split along ideological and sectarian lines. The largest number of divisions defected to the EMK, declaring its leader, Stephen Taqima, the rightful president of Kozani. Somewhat smaller numbers of troops joined the ITH, and a core of nine divisions fled to the western city of Lockport and set up a rump state under the administration of Vice President Jonah Matirashi. This rump state continued to be recognised internationally as the legitimate successor state to the Republic of Kozani, despite in practice only controlling a small swath of territory in the Arvaz River Valley. Meanwhile, full-scale, high-intensity civil war broke out throughout the rest of the country between the EMK, the ITH, and a large number of left-wing organisations: the social-democratic Popular Mobilisation Units (PMUs), the anarchist Analeuthian Antifascist Alliance (3A), the orthodox Marxist Communist Party of Kozani (CPK) and the Marxist-Leninist Democratic Front for the Liberation of Kozani (KDEK). Practically every minority community of any size formed its own self-defense militias as well, particularly since the stated goal of the EMK was to cleanse Kozani of all who were not ethnically "pure".

Sound complicated enough? Just wait until the schisms start. By 2014 the ITH had splintered into five different, rival Islamist parties, and the CPK into ten different, rival communist parties named things like Communist Party of Kozani (Trotskyist (Shoreditch General Command)), or CPK-T-SGC. The EMK, meanwhile, had retained and expanded its dominance, and was on the verge of controlling half the country. 2014, however, remains an important turning point for several reasons.

The first ethnic-minority militia to fall to the EMK was the Marshite Self-Defence Force, in New City, then a city of nearly four million inhabitants in northern Kozani. The population of Veritas Province, of which it was the capital, was almost 75% foreign-born, 60% of whom were Marshite immigrants who had settled in the area. Much of the population fled west into the Analeuths upon the fall of New City. The EMK immediately set about declaring the city an example of the fate to befall all minority groups as well as "those who promote homosexuality and transgenderism", referring to the Marshite tolerance for sexual and gender minorities as well as the then-recent "Shift" by which they had erased their visual distinctions between men and women, and began to kill and enslave the population en masse. Stephen Taqima may have believed that the Theocracy was too weak, as a result of its Long War, to intervene. This, however, proved to be false: the resulting liberation of New City and the subsequent six-week bombing campaign demonstrated that the Theocracy's military capabilities had not declined in the slightest. The EMK was practically annihilated from all but a coastal strip extending from Keel to Whitechapel, and the civil war entered a new, lower-intensity phase.

During these first eight years, it's estimated that some seventy million refugees fled the country, mostly into the Analeuths. During the subsequent twenty-odd, mass exoduses have become rare, and the battle map more stable. Despite losing much of its territory, not to mention the rumours that the Theocracy continues to supply the PMUs and other leftist militias with arms for the express purpose of keeping it in check, the EMK has somehow held on and even expanded its footprint slightly; its new leader, Viktoria Alandi, has softened her rhetoric regarding ethnic minorities, at least in public. There are allegations that the EMK has been sustained by weapons and supplies from Ordena, although international aid agencies have found no evidence to corroborate this. The various ITH splinter groups saw local successes, assassinating Vice President Matirashi in 2017 and finally seizing Lockport itself—thus, permanently dissolving the "internationally recognised Kozanian government", which had long since become a simple military junta—in 2035. Lines of contact shift approximately once every six months. In some parts of Kozani, life is almost back to normal, except for the absence of a central government; in others, fighting continues as fiercely as it ever did.

Through all this, the fighting has rarely touched Analeuthia directly. The KDEK, led by 67-year-old Dzhamil Tulqari (more commonly referred to as "Chairman Bey") ever since its inception, has been based across the Analeuthian border in the Free County of Amistad since the early 2010s, and recruited extensively from Kozanian refugee camps in the area, but it rarely left the villages it had seized control over. The traditional refugee route traced the northern border of Kozani from Veritas to Northcote and then up the Arvaz River into the Kingdom of Concord and the Exarchy of Turn-of-River, and with the fall of Lockport, at least one full division of the Kozanian Armed Forces fled this direction as well. There has certainly been evidence of a leftist resurgence, centered mostly around the PMUs, and a gradual consolidation of the various left-wing splinter parties, in part because the EMK has continued to make inroads into the city of Halifax, but there remains no evidence that AKILA—the organisation now seizing sovereign Analeuthian territory—was behind this resurgence.

What is AKILA, then?

The KDEK and the 3A make for odd ideological bedfellows: Marxist-Leninists and Anarchists have been traditionally opposed for more than a hundred years. Their integration into one umbrella organisation suggests that a large-scale plan has been underway for some time. Perhaps one explanation is, indeed, the fall of Lockport, and the Kozanian military units that fled across the border: through allying the two largest socialist parties in the Analeuths, the surviving Kozanian commanders may have believed they could form a vanguard party capable of recruiting huge numbers of Analeuthian peasants and serfs through overthrowing their liege lords, and thereby establishing an army large enough in numbers to retake Kozani. The role of young people in this endeavour also cannot be understated: a whole generation, in Analeuthia and Kozani alike, have grown up knowing nothing but civil war and its consequences, and Laurentia in particular is renowned for its universities. In the conflict in Wintervale, Serafina Nikhaia, 26, general secretary of AKILA's Laurentia Branch, is believed to have led the assaults personally. Student protests have emerged across the region, most notably in Halua, Riverside and Wakefield. The younger generation, it seems, wants change, and isn't particularly worried about the risks of destabilisation.

But perhaps the person we should look most closely at is Captain Joseph Erdeni, 32, formerly of the Kozanian Armed Forces's Twenty-Seventh Division. He's believed to have been in command of the forces that fled across the Analeuthian border when Lockport fell, and according to his fellow soldiers, it was his division and the victories it won that kept Lockport from being overrun for nearly five years after the death of the highest-ranking remaining officer in Kozani's military junta, General Aslan Luzhand, in 2030. And he has been spotted at Wintervale as well. A respected military officer, regarded as a hero by his own people, with the technical knowledge to win victories against overwhelming odds: perhaps he now seeks to build an army, return to Whitechapel and establish himself as military dictator of Kozani; and if this happens to sacrifice the peace and stability of the Analeuths, that's not his concern. But that, of course, is only speculation.

Regardless of these concerns, it seems that the Kozanian civil war is once again likely to enter a dangerously active phase. And as for the Analeuths—now that AKILA is on the verge of conquering its own territory, the question remains: what could Marxist rule look like in the twenty-first century? If the social media reactions to the assault on Wintervale are any indication, serfs and students alike are eager to find out.

Who we are, and how we came to be

A nation that can perhaps best be summed up with some questions: what might the Soviet Union or Yugoslavia have looked like in a world where idealism could be made material? What about a world where a vanguard party avoided backsliding into social imperialism or ideological deviationism? Is it even legal to run a communist nation where people don't call each other "comrade" or have "Five-Year Plans"? We'll find out (maybe).
