Dear Esteemed Colleagues, Heads of State, Leaders, Future Associates, and Others,

Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Sebastion Lorales, and I am here on behalf of Sorci Corporation to ask you a series of questions about your nation’s reserves of hand held weapondary. An answer is by no means required of any or all, but you might find these questions as much of use for your future endeavors as they are for mine. You see, Sorci is at heart a member of the global arms trade, and for us to streamline our approach to business, we need to do some field work.

At Sorci, your national defense is our concern. As such, we have created a questionnaire to find out what weapons are most in demand in your nation. Prices and sales will be forthcoming at a later date, as will be further information on additional topics. However, as a bonus to the pragmaticly minded of you, we will be putting out a report of all the data we’ve gathered in two weeks time. For those who value your nation’s privacy, don’t fret! This report, while visible to all, will not break the results down by country, and as such the data we gather will be shared with only the most trusted manufacturers and procurement specialists based on Sorci soil, so your secrets are safe with us. However, due to the contents of this survey, I must now say a statement my lawyers forced me to prepare- “Sorci Corporation in general and the Office of Finances in particular is under no obligation or responsibility to undergo any loss of revenue or essential personnel defending any other sovereign nation’s information, classified or not, as a result of this questionnaire, and therefore resolves itself from any duties forthwith. Sorci Corporation also reserves the right to unequivocally reject or refuse to include any information in the following report it sees as an attempt to mislead or injure any interested party or Sorci Corporation.”

And now that that’s out of the way, onto the questions! For the purpose of this questionnaire, the following weapons are defined as follows:

Main Service Weapons are defined as weapons that fire either an intermediate or full length cartridge at either semi automatic or fully automatic. Put simply, if your nation was to go to war right now, what would be the main weapon system the majority or plurality of your soldiers would use? These weapons normally feed from magazines that range from a capacity of 20-30 rounds, depending on the caliber. Examples of a Main Service Weapon include the M4/M16 platform, and the entire AK series.

Marksman Rifles are defined as scoped high precision rifles used by infantryman embedded directly into a squad, unlike sniper rifles, which are often used as a distinct unit in of itself (ever wonder why we hear more about snipers than about designated marksmen?). These rifles normally feed from magazines that range from 10-30 rounds depending on the caliber and purpose of the weapon itself. Marksman Rifles are often accurized as well, replacing barrels, triggers, or adding systems of the weapon to improve its ability to hit targets at longer ranges. Examples of a Marksman Rifle include the M14 EBR, the SVD, and the SR-25.

Sniper Rifles are a hot topic in fiction. The archetypal view of a bolt sliding home on measured, accurate fire is one that has imprinted itself on the minds of many, not unduly so. Sniper rifles, unlike marksman rifles, will not be issued to any member of a normal infantry squad, since to use the talents of the rifle to their fullest potential requires special training. These rifles often feed from very low capacity magazines, ranging from single shot to just over 10 rounds. For charastics of the weapons themselves, sniper rifles are split into two categories, gas operated and bolt action. Gas operated systems use the gas created by firing a ground to chamber the next, while bolt actions require the bolt to be manually cycled between each shot, which lends itself to a lower rate of fire. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages, so as such, I will include examples of each. For bolt action rifles, the most easily recognized are the Accuracy International line, the M24, and the SV-98. As for gas operated, a partial list includes the Mk14, the SVD platform (which is in of itself a derivative of the AK platform)

Automatic Rifles are defined as a Main Service Weapon that has been modified with a heavier barrel and more robust recoil dampening systems to be able to be used to provide suppressive fire. These weapons still feed from magazines, but the capacity of these magazines might be increased to compensate for its new purpose. The main difference between an Automatic Rifle and a Light Machine Gun is the weight of the overall system itself, as well as the added ability to feed from belts that most Light Machine Guns have. Automatic rifles typically feed from magazines that range in capacity from 30 up to around 100 rounds, but doctrinal and technological differences lead to differing round counts. Examples of an automatic rifle include the M27 IAW, the RPK, and the Ultimax 100. The Soviet Union issued the RPD, RPK, and RPK-74 (all of which are iterates of the AK platform) since the 1950s, as their doctrine placed more focus on the maneuverability of their dismounted infantry units more than attempting to hold static positions where a belt-fed Light Machine Gun would be more suitable.

Light Machine Guns, also known as Squad Automatic Weapons, are similar in function to Automatic Rifles, which came first in historical development. However, with an increase in firearms technology came the development of belts, first cloth, then metal, which held ammunition in place instead of a close walled magazine, therefore allowing for more bullets carried per individual machine gunner. Most LMG belts are above 100 rounds, as the main benefit of a Light Machine Gun is accuracy through volume of fire. There are many definitions of a Light Machine Gun, but a general description of one is a firearm capable of automatic fire whose general purpose is to provide suppressive fire. In particular, Light Machine Guns are man portable and fire intermediate cartridges (5.56x45mm NATO or 5.45x39mm are most common). Examples of a Light Machine Gun include the M249, the Negev, and the H&K MG4. NATO doctrine is heavily based on dismounted infantry securing fields of fire with suppressive fire, and thus a belt-fed LMG is more suitable than an Automatic Rifle.

General Purpose Machine Guns, also known as Medium Machine Guns are, as their name suggests, general purpose. These Machine Guns are still man portable, though they are often much heaver than LMGs, and much heavier than automatic rifles. Where GPMGs truly shine is in versatility. A GPMG can be mounted coaxially on a tank, on top of an APC or an IFV, and can be carried on foot, with little to no modification. This vastly simplifies the logistics of any armed force, as all GPMGs fire full power rounds, such as 7.62x51mm NATO or 7.62x54mmR. In this classification, all modern day GPMGs that I knows of fire off of a belt feed mechanism, and their round counts are about the same as a Light Machine Gun. Examples of a General Purpose Machine Gun include the M240, the PKM, and the MG5.

Heavy Machine Guns are simply described and simple in usage as well. These machineguns fire large rounds, often in an anti-material context, and are not manportable at our current technology level. These guns are mounted on vehicles, or if in a fixed position, are mounted in pivot mounts or tripods, and can be used for anti-personnel, anti-material, and anti-aircraft duties. These weapons are always belt fed, and fire rounds somewhere between 12.7mm (.50 cal) and 20mm in size, with round counts no longer being an operational issue at this size. Common examples of a Heavy Machine Gun include the M2 Browning Machine Gun, the DShK, or the KPVT machine gun.

Submachine Guns are weapons that fire a pistol cartridge, often with high rates of fire and low recoil. Their purpose is to achieve a high rate of fire while balancing usability and lowering penetration through targets, and are often often in urban areas or tight spaces. Submachine Guns were invented for the first world war, where handguns didn’t have the rate of fire to clear trenches fast enough, and riles were simply too bulky or unwieldy to use in confined areas. Earlier submachine guns had extremely high round counts for their time period, with the 100 round Thompson Submachine Gun being a prime example. Magazine size may varray, from a low end of 20 rounds, up all the way to the aforementioned drum magazines for specific firearms. Some examples of a Submachine Gun include the MP5, Thompson, Bizon, MAC-10, P90, UZI, MP-44, PPSh-41, among many others.

Handguns are the lowest cost weapon one could conceivably put into the hands of one’s troops besides sharp sticks, though their operational feasibility is limited. These weapons are designed to fit in and be fired by a single hand, and they fire pistol cartridges that move too slow to breach the sound barrier. Not much to be said here, just a quick and simple definition. Most handguns that are in use in militaries today are semiautomatic and magazine fed, though revolvers and fully automatic examples do exist and are fielded in some cash-strapped or specialized units. Handguns fire from magazines, either internal (as in revolvers) or external through magazines, which generally stay under a capacity of 20, with less or more depending on the caliber. Examples of just a few handguns include the M1911, the Makarov, the Desert Eagle (though I would advise against equipping a unit with these), revolvers in general, the Beretta M9, practically anything Glock has ever produced, and many more than I could ever condense into this letter, which is already getting way too long.

Special Weapons SystemsThis is less of a weapon class and more of an addendum, as anything rated a special weapons system is just that, something indescribable with any above classifications, or possessing some trait that makes it distinct from others in its classification. Examples range from the Soviet Union’s AS VAL, a subsonic, silences assault rifle, to the US Army’s XM25, which is a man portable grenade launcher that fires programmable air-burst grenades. Obviously, these weapon systems aren’t going to be standard issue in a long time, if ever, and only link to each other by their inherent ability to not be classified with other systems. In general these weapons can feed from a number of systems, with praticaly
each and every example being distinct enough to make a general classification a stretch at best. Other examples include H&K’s G-11 caseless assault rifle, the APS underwater rifle, and the Russian Federation’s ShAK-12 bullpup battle rifle (chambered in 12.7x55mm!).

AAR-20 is the universal weapon system of Erloanean soldiers. It is capable of being used in any configuration, from a SMG to a carbine with only a barrel swap. It features a recoil compensation system, belt-feeding capability (100, 200 belts, or a 1000 ammo backpack), large capacity magazines (50 rounds), very high rate of fire (1000 RPM) and rapid barrel change. Due to all these features it is heavier and more expensive than comparable rifles, but this rifle perfectly embodies Erloane´s doctrine for the infantry. Also it can work in our terrain, where it easily reaches -55°C.

Mk315 shares many components with the AAR-20.

LMG and Automatic Rifle categories are one in the Erloanean doctrine.

Mk322 is only utilised on vehicles.

Mk25 is only used by the police. The armed forces use an AAR-20 with a short barrel as a carbine for vehicle crews.

All Erloane´s weapons are manufactured by Erloane Military Industries.

If possible, we would like to ask a series of small questions on the nature of Eurasian firearms, as a few examples brought up in your answers are interesting. Is there a reason the QBU-97O is chambered in 7.62x39mm over other options? Is the round accurized beyond normal tolerances? Secondly, does the 8.2x55mm behave more like a long range precision cartridge (.338 Lapua Magnum/7.62x54mmR) or a short range urban combat round (9x39mm/12.7x55mm/.458 SOCOM)? Third, the forces of Eurasia have seemed to transitioned away from the 9x18mm Makarov pistol cartridge, did it have to do with standardization over large land masses between various former nation-states or some other factor?

The Sorcian Corporation Office of Finances thanks the North American Union for your response to our questionnaire. Please give our respects to King-Emperor Charles the Third, in his 60th year of good health, as we wish him well. We have no questions for the Union of North America, but a point of contention that has came to light in our eyes. Is the 45-inch Mk.2z Imperial round entitled to be read as such? If so, is a handgun given a different meaning in Union nomenclature? This may be a simple miscommunication on our end or a lack of understanding, but a standard issue sidearm that uses shells over three times as large as the largest ordinance ever fired in wartime (the 18 inch or 80 cm Big Bertha) is a development that we at Sorci Corporation are incredibly interested in for obvious reasons.

My troops equipment is not state of the art. It's modern MT and late cold war. We are in a regional arms race on a tight budget.

Our recent major arms deal has been obtaining a large order of second hand F16s MLU version at bargain price from a friendly nation.
That allowed us to replace other older models and We will upgrade our own F16s to the same version.

My troops have been receiving the CAR-21 assault rifle, it resembles the M4 carbine, in 5,56mm NATO. That is a modern design that replaced the mayhem of rifles inherited from last major war. A under rifle grenade launcher can be attached normally a M203. It replaced the M16A2 as our supposed "standard rifle".
The main hand gun is the local copy of the IWI Jericho.
Our LMG is the minimi and medium machine gun is the M60 but is being replaced by the M240.
We use various mortars from 51 to 120mm mortars.
As RPG we use various models either purchased or captured. Our Standard is the 84mm C90 and is supplemented by the 84mm Carl Gustav. Other recoiled guns used are from 82 to 107mm range.
Our manpas missile is the RBS70 we also used the blowpipe and we have few numbers of other designs as the stinger.
Our main antitank weapon is the MILAN but We selected the Javelin as replacement.
We use various models of indigenous grenades.

One minor question we had was if there a reason a definitive long ranged cartridge like the 10.36x77mm was chosen over other less costly alternatives? It seems to us that the Sultanate is supplied by Russia, who themselves seem to be content with the performance of 7.62mmR in their own armed forces, what about the round makes the added cost and complications worth it? Also, is the BAM-99 a direct copy of the AUG, or a derivative in the same style? The Sorci Corporation thanks you for your interest and wishes the citizens of the Sultanate well. While we at the Office of Finance appreciate you informing us of your nation's supplies of artillery and mortars for future use and/or study on our end, we are not looking to supply either of those at the moment due to cost overlap with existing programs. However, we do have a question. Is the CAR-21 a domestic copy of the M-4 given a different designation, or a complete redesign? If it is the former, we have no further questions, but if it is the latter, what made you choose a redesign over another ready made product? Thank you for your response.

However, we do have some question about your firearms, as there are some inconsistencies and issues that we have noticed that raise more questions than they answer. If both the AK-74 and M-4 are used in an automatic rifle role, what provisions are taken for them to be most effective in their assignment? Also, another question we have is the reasoning for having an UZI chambered in .45 ACP and a M1911 chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. We've independently observed variants of both platforms to be in use and production today, but their speed is much less than cheaper and what some would say are more effective alternatives.
