NSCF 25: CENEISIS NAVAL ACADEMY MATCHDAY SIX

Ceneisis Naval 14 17 13 10 54
Max. Roch. Inst. 0 0 0 0 0

What a game. What an absolute game. What an absolute no-holds-barred beatdown. Now that’s how you get your NSCF resurgence right back on track. Was it unsporting for Ceneisis Naval to keep running up the score on Maximus Rochester even after it was abundantly clear that the other side just couldn’t do anything to fight against the unassailable might of the Ensigns? Probably. But that was probably the fault of the coaching staff, who failed to inform Dakota Regan and the CenNaval second string that the game was over, and that they didn’t need to pad their stats or whatever.

What this game did for both sides though was to give them the chance to give both of their second strings some game time. And I guess CenNaval’s future after Eric Bush is in safe hands because based on her performance, Dakota Regan and the juniors and sophomores could keep this momentum going. They will ensure that the renaissance of Ceneisis Naval Academy and its return to relevance in both the Zephyr Conference and NSCF won’t stop after just one season. I mean, just… good God! Or to borrow an oft-used phrase from the vocabulary of the Man from Markovsky, Christ above! 54 goddamn points. It’s still nowhere close to the 75 points that the University of Mancodas dropped on Ceneisis last season, but it’s still a very impressive score nonetheless. The only thing tainting this victory is the fact that Maximus Rochester had clearly had enough of all this, but CenNaval’s second string continued pounding them anyway.

When Maximus Rochester started the first quarter with a three-and-out, it wasn’t a surprise at all. When J. Lee Whitehead scored a 16-yard touchdown for the Ensigns, it wasn’t a surprise either. And neither was Nia Kirk intercepting the ball to set up another first quarter drive for CenNaval. For that matter, only a few eyebrows went up when Eric Bush literally leaped over the line of scrimmage to score another touchdown after a desperate goal-line defense on the part of MRI. I mean, maybe he could have used Jerrold Fuqua to break the plane instead of risking himself for that play, but hey, it makes for great gameside imagery. And he’s also in his final year in the Academy before he has to serve in the Navy so why not let him have his fun while he’s still here? Besides, it’s actually adding points to CenNaval’s campaign to bring themselves back to the top of the Zephyr Conference, a place that they had held for so many times before but not in recent years. So why not let the man have some fun before he goes to serve in the Navy?

For a moment though, it did look like Maximus Rochester might have been able to make a stop when they forced Ceneisis to take a field goal in the second quarter. But then MRI had another three-and-out and allowed Ceneisis to regain possession, a possession which resulted in Eduardo Hendrix scoring another touchdown for the Ensigns. And things would get even worse as Theresa Hodge intercepted a pass intended for an MRI wideout and gave the ball right back to CenNaval, and J. Lee Whitehead would score his second touchdown of the game through that particular pick. That moment when Hodge literally tore the ball out of the air to regain possession was the moment when everyone realized that they were witnessing a brutal sporting massacre. What little relief Maximus Rochester thought they would get during halftime would come to an end too quickly for them, and soon they had to come out there and face even more annihilation and humiliation.

Frank Nkong'o finally called it quits for the first string offense after Jerrold Fuqua scored a touchdown that was just too easy for the Ensigns. Out went Eric Bush and company, and in went Dakota Regan and company. But even the switch in personnel wasn't enough to change the fortunes of Maximus Rochester. They were practically doomed right from the start. Frankie Nkong'o gave orders to the second string to take it easy, but even in take-it-easy mode, Dakota Regan was still good enough to give CenNaval two field goals in the third quarter to add to Fuqua's touchdown. And then in the fourth quarter, we had the big one.

It wasn't obvious if Dakota Regan really intended that pass to go to Hollie Loera or not, but in the grand scheme of things the intent doesn't really matter now, does it? Hollie still caught it, and she still made it all the way to the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown. We were just witness to an absolute massacre and there was nothing that either side could do about it. Well, maybe CenNaval actually needed this victory. They were about to go up against Mar Sara Tech after all, and this might just be the thing they need to get some good momentum against the Raiders. You never know. What I do know is that Maximus Rochester just got beat, and they got beat bad. Krystal Finklesteen, Krystal Finklesteen, Krystal Finklesteen...

Season Recap #2: Here Come the Redbirds

While the victory over winless Byses hardly moved the needle with the way the Redbirds' season has gone, every television set and mobile phone in New Gesem was tuned to the game between Green City University of TJUN-ia and the University of the Commonwealth of Baker Park, where the Warriors suffered only their second loss of the season to bring them onto even terms with both UAlexandropolis and TJUN-ia's Trent State University. Gesemite football fans have been watching the Warriors' season intently, seeking a crack in the armor that would allow the Redbirds to take first in the conference before the end of conference play. That crack has emerged and what's more, Alexandropolis is in an ideal position to exploit it.

Let us explain; the two remaining conference games for the Redbirds are home vs. Baker Park in week nine and away against Trent State in week ten. Winning both those games, whatever the likelihood of that outcome may be, guarantees the Redbirds roll into their out-of-conference schedule in first place in the conference. While the final two games of the season are likely to be tough, both opponents have shown themselves to be beatable, and the Redbirds have shown great composure in big moments this season.

In week 9, the Trent State Feathercaps have a tough away test against domestic rivals Green City, who will have the benefit of momentum after their statement win over Commonwealth, while in week 10 the Baker Park Warriors will face the hapless Byles Politicians. In the event the Redbirds lose one or more of their final two conference games, it will likely fall to the out-of-conferences matches and then to winning percentage to determine the Redbirds' postseason fate.

Of the Redbirds' three out-of-conference games, the first, StrayaRoos's Panem University, looks to be an almost sure win, as the Phoenix have yet to win a Big Eight conference game. Salamantic Universities of Ko-Oren are currently 4-4 in the Celestia Conference and look to be a greater challenge, but their record may be a difference maker in building the Redbirds' postseason resume. Finally, Silverleaf University sits 7-0 at the top of their conference, albeit the weaker Sequoia Conference, making their game something of a wildcard (the Goblins' week 8 matchup with the Alto College Rats of Reformed Alto Tan had not been contested at press time).

The Goblins get another blowout win against Utah University, extend their perfect record to 7-0.

Their previous meeting ended with Silverleaf University winning in a shutout 49-0. In this game, the second half was all-Silverleaf.

The scoring started with DB/FS Wilkie Ray getting an interception from the Utes QB passing on the left side, returning for a 44-yard touchdown (6-0). PK Isaiah Rigby's attempt for an extra point was not good.

In about two minutes before the end of the first quarter, the Utes kicker scored a 42-yard field goal to decrease the Goblin's lead by three (6-3).

In the second quarter, the two teams went back-to-back in defensive plays. Less than five minutes before the first half ended, SU RB Irvine Royle ran for 1 yard to score a touchdown (12-3). Rigby's extra point attempt was good to increase the Goblins' lead to ten (13-3). Four minutes after, with about 30 seconds remaining in the half, the Utah University scored an 8-yard touchdown pass, converting the extra point attempt successfully (13-10). Just before the half ended, Rigby forced a field goal from 27 yards (16-10).

Four minutes when play resumed after halftime, Utes kicker scored a 25-yard field goal (16-13). But that was the last time the hosts scored in that game, with the Goblins getting three scoring plays before the game ended.

Royle scored another touchdown after five minutes with an 8-yard run (22-13), and Rigby getting the extra point (23-13).

Just when the fourth quarter started, SU QB Austin Garner went for a 9-yard rushing touchdown (29-13), with Rigby getting the extra point (30-13).

With about nine minutes left in the game, Garner passed the football to WR Michele Vasquez for a 14-yard touchdown (36-13), with Rigby getting his fourth field goal in five attempts (37-13).

With three games left, the Goblins will be hosting the Alto College in their next game. Silverleaf won their last meeting in Alto College, 24-14.

President Grant Haffner was sitting on the portico at The Gray House in Woodstock with a cup of coffee. The Pacitalian brew and the Delaclav croissant sitting next to it were a welcome break from the demands of the Presidency. He was a couple of days away from announcing his intentions about whether or not he was running for a second term as President. He'd already made his decision and first lady Gloria Haffner already knew what he'd decided.

Regardless, she was visiting with relatives in Catherina and planned a visit to the Presidential palace in Catherina. Granted, it wouldn't be a formal state visit and no formal agenda was on the docket. But it was still her representing the Incorporated States in somewhat of an official capacity after her unofficial visit to spend time with family.

It gave Grant Haffner an opportunity to look out at the lush, green lawn and the snow that topped the trees Gloria Haffner had her staff plant and take care of. The air was crisp, but unseasonably warm for this time of year in the mountains. He picked up the saucer and took a sip. He put the cup down, then pullled off the tip of the croissant, grabbed the small knife next to the butter, and put a small pat onto the piece he'd grabbed. Then he ate. Haffner was enjoying this brief serene moment as sort of a mini-vacation until he saw a secretary walk out with an envelope addressed to him.

"Mr. President," the secretary said in a halting voice. "Sorry to disturb you on a weekend, but we just received a letter from the Kabaka, and I thought you should see it."

Haffner raised an eyebrow. Normally, correspondence that wasn't marked urgent could wait until first thing Monday morning after he'd finished reading the daily briefing and had his first meeting of the day with lieutenant president Brian Patrick to discuss the items in the briefing. This certainly didn't qualify as urgent, but the fact that it was coming from the Banijan monarch himself was notable.

"Thank you, Linda," Haffner said with a quick nod as she handed him the envelope. He looked at the outside, then saw the letter had already been opened as was standard practice to ensure that no one planted anything like an explosive or drugs into the envelope. He pulled out the letter, picked up the saucer with his left hand, took a sip, then put the saucer back down and opened the contents of the letter.

Haffner read the letter, nodding at the mention of the meeting then-Senior Vice President and External Affairs Officer Bryan Conway had with Omugabe Ttembo in Belle Haven as they watched Sarzonia and Banija battle on the lacrosse pitch as bitter rivals whilst both men hoped to shore up relations between the two countries as strong friends. He checked his schedule to ensure there was nothing major scheduled. There was a ceremonial ringing of the bell at the Portland Stock Exchange to mark the last trading day of the year before the markets closed for a week-long post-holiday break, but that was something he could easily have Gloria do in his stead.

There was a Cabinet meeting, but Patrick ran those, and Haffner only attended ones in which a major decision had to be made. Haffner didn't have much rearranging of his schedule to do, so he began to compose a letter in response to the Kabaka's invitation to Ruwani Motor Speedway.

To: His Majesty, Kabaka Mwanga,

Your Majesty,

I would be honoured to accept your invitation to Ruwani Motor Speedway to attend the match between your country's Northern Moravica University and my nation's Woodstock City College gridball teams as they conclude the regular season in the 25th NSCF season, our inaugural participation in this competition.

Our countries have some differences, but as you noted, we also have many similarities. Both of our countries are passionate about the preservation of democracy and freedom. Both of our peoples have a shared allegiance with Baker Park. I am pleased with the result of the meeting between your Foreign Minister and our Senior Vice President and External Affairs Officer, to say nothing of the outcome of the lacrosse match between our countries! With that said, I note that a passion for sporting competition and countries who both enjoy tremendous success on various pitches and fields is yet more common ground that unites our countries.

I look forward to the opportunity for us to meet in person, finally, and to strengthening the bonds that unite us.

Respectfully yours,

Grant D. Haffner
President
Incorporated States of Sarzonia

Following the composition of the letter, it was on its way to the Kabaka. Meanwhile, some of the Gray House staff were watching Woodstock City College take on Utah University in a revenge match of sorts at Friedgen Stadium. They would watch the Climbers roll the Utes 35-0 to clinch no worse than a .500 record. However, with their next opponents Silverleaf University winning their match over Alto College 23-0, their Sequoia Conference championship aspirations would officially be shuttered.

Sadeg ain't nothin'
We can't print the rest of that statement in a newspaper.

By Jonathan Umadden

With the announcement that the Ironworkers won't be returning to the World Bowl for a variety of intricate and likely corrupt organizational reasons, my time's been freed up to start covering college football. We'll be starting with the local representatives in NCSF, the Hoofstra University Pride, visiting the Horizon Conference's arguable top team, Drawkland's Sadeg State.

The two teams are a drastic clash of styles to say the least. Sadeg's focus on brutal offensive measures has historically produced strong results, but many say their lack of discipline—which included giving up 40 points to the notoriously poor Pride offense twice last season—is a sign of the pride that comes before the fall (no pun intended). And indeed, in the final game of NCSF 24's conference stage Sadeg scored a mere 23 while visiting Ledbetter Field just outside Fillydelphia. Although the match hardly effected the table—Sadeg were still Horizon champions and Hoofstra still missed the playoffs—that dredged the matchup back to 3-1. Much better than most teams that aren't from Chromatika can hope against top sides!

Add in the Pride's surprisingly strong start to the non-conference games, including a banger of an overtime win over the renowned Ranorian school Richardson University that shot them into the top 5 of the OSPI rankings and it seemed like there might be a shakeup in the order of Horizon on the... well, horizon. Then they tanked to Green Coast University of Beaverriver to hemorrhage all that newly-gained OSPI, but y'know. It felt like the times, they were a'changin'.

Hoofstra defending Ledbetter against Sadeg once again in week two was a confirmation that their previous tussle wasn't a fluke. They're here to compete (and also lose to the unranked team that hasn't won a single game otherwise). What would happen when the reverse leg came?

At the originally-named Skyhawks Gridiron Park, Johnny Montgomery used the first drive to find Filigree Fox for two excellent 15-yard passes in between several failed running attempts. When the Skyhawk defense said "okay no more of that please," Airtime came on for a 55-yard field gold attempt. The pegasus struck true and the Pride were off to an early 3-0 lead! Not that that was likely to make a big difference between two teams that usually sum between 45 and 90 points per game, but every point matters in the end.

And that's it. Nothing else happened. The Pride defense brick walled Sadeg so utterly and thoroughly that it didn't matter in the slightest that Montgomery didn't complete a single pass for the rest of the game. You've never seen a Drawkian crowd shut up like this, let me tell ya. They're one of the most rabid touchdown-obsessed fanbases in the multiverse. Getting shut out? At home? And losing to a field goal? It's the worst possible thing that could happen to Sadeg: giving Cavsar ammunition to meme about them.

Buffalo - Sporting Best Offense and Defense In Conference, Remain Undefeated Against Panem

Image

Even visiting Panem, the Buffalo were projected to dominate this game, and the fact that it didn't play out that way is a bit alarming, but remember that this is a now 8-0 team. If their slip up games are one score wins, I think we'll be alright.

The Buffalo seemed to be willing to experiment on offense, getting Alexander Østby 23 carries on the day as they established the run early. The sophomore from Valanora took advantage of that opportunity, racking up 109 rushing yards and a touchdown - one of the team's two on the day.

"We knew we were more than a match for these guys," Chris Dale said in a postgame interview, "And wanted to see if we could try a different style of football. Alexander is a dynamic back, and as we get into the meat of our schedule with Kohnhead City, Felswyr, and Elephant Valley, we may need to change things up offensively."

A sound strategy, though perhaps alarming that the game was as close as it was. Aurel Strathos will likely continue to be the star here, and he finished 22/31 for 251 yards, one score, one interception and a fumble. His turnovers were covered up by a swarming defense, with Proko and Candace Ferrett each forcing a fumble and free safety Agnor Viridian snagging an interception in the red zone. Ferrett in particular had herself a solid day with 6 tackles, a pass deflection, and the strip sack in what is on pace to be her most productive season yet.

But going back to Strathos, the quarterback has managed to break both of his previous NSCF career highs despite a reduced role against Panem. In NSCF 23 as a freshman, Strathos produced 2,132 yards and 18 touchdown passes, and he's now at 2,490 yards on the season with an impressive 19 touchdowns. He's on pace for a nice 4,046 yards and a nice 31 touchdowns.

But there are two games left before the Buffalo can officially make it through the conference slate unscathed. And while hosting Swisston on matchday ten is no small order, traveling to Kohnhead City is the looming threat to a perfect group stage this season. At 5-3, the aptly dubbed Mighty Eagles, with a true OPOY candidate in Herman Whitworth leading them, are fighting as hard as anyone to ensure a strong finish, and keep control of their own destiny to secure a playoff spot. With Emilee Johansonn's offense scoring 25.75 points per game, expect this one to be a shootout against a team that's got something to throw on the billboard after Buffalo head coach Chris Dale referred to them as "the jokers in Kohnhead City" when speaking on his upcoming game against Richardson earlier this season.

And unfortunately, not every year can be a dream season. This is the highest level of college football, and the Mighty Eagles are in the upper portion of that level. They aren't going down quietly, and this isn't the conference to play in if you want to make it out unscathed.

Recruiting Outlook

As conference play starts to wind down, coaches from all the major programs are going to start having one eye on their recruiting board and starting to make pushes to fill the gaps and needs that their teams are going to have in the following season. Hitting the recruiting trail is honestly a near year long commitment for many coaches, but it always seems to come down to these last few weeks of conference play and then the non-conference where those final pushes are made and the recruits start making their commitments. At the Magnus Academy, there is not as prospects that are going to be hitting the board, as the side has had two wonderful classes of graduates the last two seasons, a small dip in quantity was always likely going to happen. What has not changed though is the quality of the recruits that the Academy is producing, though one might wonder if there is a perceived bias against the Vanorian prospect considering how many of the top prospects last season from the Academy wound up at Raynor University or Mar Sara Tech. Regardless of a bias or not, the institute is once again looking to help their best players get a scholarship at an NSCF school, providing a list of the coaches' assessment of the best prospects from the team this year.

7. Manne Nordström
Position: RB
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 181 lbs
Handedness: Left
Manne is perhaps on the shorter side for a gridiron player, but do not let that fool you, he is a player that can go through the grinder and keep on churning. This is especially true after he put on ten pounds of muscle during summer training to prepare for this season, showing his dedication to the team and willingness to adapt to fit into the scheme. He is a speed back that is also quite comfortable lining up in the slot and is an excellent on kick returns as well.

6. Mustafa Engström
Position: CB
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 197 lbs
Handedness: Right
Mustafa is a classic example of a player who is on the defense cause of his inability to produce on the offensive end. His size would have him in theory be a great wide receiver, as well as a good amount of a speed, but he has poor hands that have proven far better at breaking up passes than they were for bringing them in. A patient coach could perhaps coach and train him up to be that potentially game changing receiver, but for the time being he is an above average corner who has the size and speed to cover most team's number one receivers.

5. Patrick Mårtensson
Position: DT
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 193 lbs
Handedness: Right
A stalwart defensive tackle that has the sort of motor to get back into plays where you would think that he was neutralized by the offensive line. An exceptional stopping force in run coverage and the strength to deal with double teams from time to time. Like most Vanorian lineman, is perceived to be undersized, but the lack of bulk underscores the underlying strength that he and most Vanorian linemen do have.

4. Mohamad Larsson
Position: WR
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 171 lbs
Handedness: Right
Larsson is an interesting character, a little too tall to be your traditional slot receiver despite the speed for the position, but a little undersized to be a traditional wide out. What he does have is excellent route running skills and a tendency to high point the ball on those fifty-fifty passes, using his height to overtake most defenders. Mohamad could definitely deal with some strength training to add some muscle to fill out his form and let him be better suited to absorbing the hits that he is likely to take running across the middle or fades into the endzone.

3. Kimi Lundin
Position: TE
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 192 lbs
Handedness: Left
An exceptional dual purpose tightend who is that reliable security blanket for a quarterback who has gone through their progressions and needs a checkdown or a good lead blocker for a patient runner who runs behind their blockers. The only concern with Lundin is he has had a history of sprained ankles and wrists, making some wonder if he might be a little injury prone, if only with minor injuries. It is a label that Lundin is desperately trying to shake as he moves into his collegiate career.

2. Kristian Holmberg
Position: MLB
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 191 lbs
Handedness: Right
An in for face linebacker that is easily good for at least one tackle for loss a game, playing very much in a north-south style, but has the lateral movement to move into coverage if he needs to. Has a high IQ for the game and can act as a quarterback for the defense, with ability to call coverage shifts and audibles to get the team into the correct coverage for whatever formation is thrown at the team. He is the type of player that can very easily become a team leader if given the opportunity to hit the field early.

1. Totte Lindberg
Position: SS
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 182 lbs
Handedness: Right
This is one safety that you do not want to be in the vision of, as he will just as likely lay you out as he is to strip the ball from you or intercept it if you throw into his coverage. Best utilized on the blitz to make use of his impressive speed and raw physical power, with a strength that would make any strength and conditioning coach extremely proud. However he wants to start his freshman year and is very likely not to accept any offers that do not at least offer him the ability to compete for a starting spot his freshman year.

Felswyr State Thumps Skyhawks, Avoids Second Straight Sweep

FIREHAWKS ROOST, FELSWYR, MOUNTAIN DISTRICT - Coming off of another shock defeat, and the very first time that Sarai Gwenderyn has ever lost to the same team for the second time in a single season - the Firehawks had a bone to pick with those who said they were washed up, and they answered every single question by demolishing the Sadeg State Skyhawks by a score of 42-10 in Horizon Conference action.

Gwenderyn, who had been contained by the Lava's defensive line and Jere Rinaldi, was on point against the Skyhawks, going 31 of 38 for 349 yards and four touchdowns, with two more on the ground. Otto Mitchell performed very well against his countrymen, catching 15 passes for 194 yards and 2 scores; Stan Devlin and Isabella Pont had the other two scores. Felswyr State was able to hold the ball for more than 38 minutes, which is a lot for FSU, and really dictate the course of play.

Besides one long run around the outside that resulted in the only score for the Skyhawks, the Firehawks' front seven held up pretty well, with Park Mi-Hyeon doing a great job dictating how the rest of the starters should play. FSU conceded only 307 total yards as the Firehawks played a very good style of bend-but-don't-break.

The victory not only stops Felswyr State from being swept by the second team in a row, but it also puts the Firehawks at a 5-3 record and in good standing with the rest of the conference. Though Staramara Tech does have the head-to-head sweep, it allows the Firehawks to head into the games against Cavsar and Hoofstra with the knowledge that as long as they take care of business, there will be an outside chance of winning the title. They totally embarrassed Cavsar the first time around; it's likely that they'll be able to handle the Gladiators again, leaving the defensive prowess of Hoofstra.

"It's nice to be on the other side of such a result," admitted Gwenderyn, "We were kind of lost after the Staramara Tech game and it's nice to get back on track."

Staramara Tech Almost Slips Up, Barely Edges Past Royal Armitage

Staramara Tech almost ran into an untimely roadblock as the Lava needed a late touchdown from Gabriele Ziegler to get past Royal Armitage University in Week 8 Horizon Conference action.

The bottom feeders of the conference, who'd actually stopped the Skyhawks earlier in the season, had some success running the ball against the Lava, but ultimately the combination of Ziegler and Rhodes proved to be too much in favor for the Lava.

When Gabriele Ziegler caught a fourteen yard pass in the flat with five minutes left in the game, the Lava were able to hold down their hosts for the rest of the match and preserve the victory.

Next up, they'll have a chance to avenge the other loss of their season - Sadeg State, which would help them get a step closer to winning the Horizon Conference title in their inaugural season, an honor that nobody deemed possible.

What will come of them?

Warriors wary of final hurdles
by Aaron Hardison
UC Correspondent for The Times

A second home conference defeat has put the University of the Commonwealth behind the roght ball once again in their bid to capture their sixth Mineral Conference title, which would tie the record held by Port Salem which was accomplished in the early years of NSCF play.

The 30-20 loss against Green City University dropped UC to 6-2 on the season and into a three way tie with Trent State--whom the Warriors have swept the season series--and New Gesem's University of Alexandropolis Redbirds, the opponent in the final conference away trip of the campaign.

Ryan Benton's team will need to find the offensive balance they had in the second Trent State matchup in TJUN-ia to overcome UA, who inflicted a 30-0 drubbing on UC at Gleason Field that saw starting QB Marcus Crews lost for the season.

The Redbirds will look to put themselves in the driver seat for the title with a season sweep of the Warriors, as they close out the MinCon schedule at Trent State in week 10; the Feathercaps will face Green City as the top four in the standings will square off in the league's biggest matchday.

UC will need to establish control of game early to ease pressure on a defense that has allowed an average of 21ppg so far, in addition to not being forced into passing situations in a catch-up mode.

NSFB: A Shock Before The Earth Trophy Rematch!

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Dec 14, 2021 4:28 am

Sometimes, even what you thought was a fact, something that could not be challenged at all, can be shattered into a million pieces in the blink of an eye. College Football in particular is a sport that thrives on the chaos, on the mantra that anything can happen on any given day...and this week would prove just that. The NSCF produced a shock right before Earth Trophy II...and no one saw it coming at all.

We begin with, of course, the Trent State Feathercaps, who were looking to get right back on track after a 19-30 defeat at the hands of the UCBP Warriors at home. Johnny Bridgeford didn't like how that game went at all, obviously, but he also stressed to his team that the conference fight in the Mineral "wasn't over by a long shot" and so, the fight had to carry on with little delay. That would certainly be proven at the Stevan Vaalburger College of Sports, Medicine and Leadership in the Allamunnic States as the Caps went out there with the tools in their hands to produce the result they wanted. Leon Gallas was brilliant, scoring 3 TDs on the night (2 through Victor Que-et-Vous and 1 through a rush via Kendra Jackson) and while boyfriend Xander Tiovannen went only 2/3 on PATs, SVCSML could manage an FG in response. It was a nice performance that set them up for the unlikely chase to the top...that is, until they heard what happened at Jacob F Gleason Field. Then, they were in complete disbelief.

The Green City Royal Eagles, 3-4 entering this weekend, played out a tight win over Byses at The Palace the previous week and while Paul Abdullahi wasn't exactly too happy with how tight things were, a win was still a win and GCU could certainly do with more of those. Unfortunately for his side (or so everyone thought), they were travelling to Bell Haven to play those UCBP Warriors that tormented TCU last week, but whom GCU only lost to be 3 points back home on MD3. That was the first results that showed GCU's potential and now, they had to go into the Commonwealth of Baker Park and try and look at least competitive in the face of certain defeat. No one expected much from this one, even if it was given a primetime TV slot back home for obvious reasons, but Abdullahi stressed to everyone who'd listen that his team would "fight to the very end, no matter the final score".

To say the Royal Eagles did that, and so much more, would be an understatement that would send shockwaves back to TJUN-ia in earnest. Moses Igbinoghene needed the game of his life if he wanted to even be even considered competition to Marcus Crews' explosive offence in this contest, but to say he provided ample opposition to the hosts tonight, but that is exactly what happened here and no one can be sure as to why. Moses managed 3 TDs in the first 3 quarters and all were by different methods (a throw to Gilbert Nyamutsamba in Q1, a rush to Mercy Oshoala in Q2 and a punt return via Immaculate Nakisuuyi in Q3), with Glory Oparanozie going 2/3 on PATs but hit a 45-yard FG to give the visitors 23 points. The hosts were always 1 step ahead during this time and Crews certainly did his job, hitting 3 TDs of his own through target man Mick Doolittle and while Landon Korman went 2/3 on PATs too, no further points meant that GCU held a surprising 23-20 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. That shock would turn into jubilation soon enough as Crews through a pass to Joy Alozie, who simply jogged towards the Pick 6 and the PAT from Glory would ultimately complete the unexpected job. Green City, on debut, had knocked off the Warriors on the road and sent the MIneral Conference back into chaos.

Now, the situation for Earth Trophy II got a lot more interesting. UCBP, TSU and UAlexandropolis are now all level on 6-2, with UCBP beating TCU twice but losing to UA on Week 5. UCBP will have to play UA on the road on Week 9 before UA head to Notts to play the Feathercaps on the final week of conference play. So, for TSU's Mineral hopes, they need two things to happen: a UA win over UCBP and for themselves to retain the Earth Trophy over GCU. But GCU is now 4-4 and looking to prove to the Caps that they are a threat, and what better way of doing that than upsetting TSU at The Palace and sending the MIneral fates outside of Trent State's hands. This will certainly be an interesting day, as all eyes shall be on Alexandropolis and Green City for one night only. Earth Trophy II may decide the fate of the conference after all, and you better believe that GCU's first Homecoming will be its most important...for all of TJUN-ia.
WE ARE! TRENT STATE!
G-C-U! WE BLEED GREEN!

Northern Moravica escape Elephant Valley with a stunning win on the final play of the game to hold onto the Sally Trophy

ELEPHANT VALLEY, SOUTH NEWLANDIA- When Northern Moravica and Elephant Valley developed a rivalry trophy, they did so in the knowledge that they would be long-term rivals in the same Celestia conference for years to come. And although Northern Moravica won it in dominating fashion last time, there were much different circumstances heading into the rematch. Northern Moravica was sitting at 4-3, having won all four home games, and having yet to record a single road win. Elephant Valley University, at 5-2, with both of its losses to the Banijan duo, were sitting as the highest ranked Celestia team according to the OSPI- sitting as the #4 team in the entire damn competition, ahead of a 6-1 Loyola-Istria squad that it beat.

But this was an Elephant Valley team that was riding high. After their tough Week 4 loss to Loyola at home, they were winners of 3 in a row, including beating their national rivals, RUoN. And they were licking their chops trying to get their hands on the Sally Trophy. Elephant Valley Head Coach sat at 0-6 all-time against the Banijan schools, and he wanted to finally get rid of that "0-for." Especially considering the RUoN had knocked off Northern Moravica just a few short weeks ago. The two teams promised a defensive battle, and that's what they gave us. Elephant Valley in the first half could not move the ball at all, gaining just 2 first downs and 57 yards of total offense the entire half. They couldn't generate any push at the line of scrimmage to run the ball, and Jacob Herron was basically always running for his life.

On the Northern Moravica side of things, they were having some success moving the football- but the Red Elephants were tightening things up in the red zone. Throughout the first half, Northern Moravica had three 60+ yard drives that got inside the 10 yard line, and yet, all three of those drives ended in field goals. The first, the opening drive, saw the Cougars eventually reach the 8 yard line, but then run for no gain once, and throw consecutive incompletions to kick a field goal. Their second long drive came courtesy of a big play, a 55 yard reception down the right sideline to freshman WR Jannik Nadine. That brought them down to the 14. They eventually got to the 6 for a 3rd and 2. But a holding penalty cost them 10 yards, and they only got two more yards on a QB scramble by Wagner-Young to settle for another field goal. 6-0 to Northern Moravica.

And on the final NMU drive of the half, they got down to the 9 yard line. But Wagner-Young had to take a 7 yard sack on 3rd and goal, courtesy of Red Elephants DE Jeshuah Akongo, which forced another field goal. The Cougars were dominant statistically, and yet, the Red Elephants were making plays on defense, where it mattered, to keep them in the game. Many Northern fans felt that it should've been more than 9-0 at that point, but of course, the scoreboard doesn't lie, right? After the Red Elephants went 3 and out on their opening drive, they punted from their own 22 yard line early in the 3rd quarter. But they've got Jonas Middleton, who boomed the ball over everybody's head, and the bouncing ball was downed at the 3 yard line. The Red Elephants would try to get some life from their defense.

But Northern, once again, was moving the football. Touchdowns would eventually come for them, right? 15 yards up the middle for Apollo Esther was a quality start for the drive. And then, a 19 yard strike to Yaya Badjie on 3rd and 7 to give Northern Moravica a fresh set of downs. Once again, a formula that could work between the 20s. That's when Northern Moravica dialed up the deep shot. The hard play-action to Apollo Esther, with their top two wideouts streaking down the sideline. But EVU DE Cody Hartman only had eyes for the QB. Blowing by the Left Tackle, he made a beeline for Wagner-Young's blind side. As the QB stepped up, the DE dove and knocked the ball free, landing on Wagner-Young's leg. Qusmi MLB Sylax-Kresp Den dove on top of the football at the NMu 35. Even worse? Wagner-Young limping off the field. The senior QB, and the reigning NSCF Offensive Player of the Year, would not return.

Northern Moravica's defense was shredding EVU though, right? Not on this drive. All the Red Elephants needed was two plays to capitalize on the momentum and get back into the game. First play, a corner route to senior WR Juliette de Laramie for 23 yards, to get to the NMU 12 yard line. Second play? A bubble screen to Gabriel Yafet, who broke a tackle and followed his blockers into the end zone. Just like that, with the PAT good, the score was 9-7. And NMU was missing their QB. And the EVU crowd.. Not normally known for the most raucous home field in this competition, was showing signs of life. NMU suddenly being led by talented true freshman QB Felix Ström in a rivalry game.

And both offenses, predictably, continued to struggle, as it turned into a field position battle. One that NMU was losing badly, of course, with Alicia Woodbrough in no way, shape, or form capable of outpunting Jonas Middleton. But things got worse in the fourth quarter. NMU finally showing signs of life, Felix Ström settling down. Then, in a 2nd and 2 from the NMU 31, Lance Kabuye decided to try and be aggressive. Simply let Badjie go one on one with EVU's cornerback down the field. But the play ended up being disastrous. Felix Ström could not put the ball far enough towards the sideline since he was hit as he was throwing by Cody Hartman, and Chromatik CB Samuel Mines climbed the ladder to grab the football. Intercepted at their own 43, 13 minutes left in the quarter. He held the football high in the air- the prize of war.

Jacob Herron led a relatively short drive down the field. He faced a 2nd and 1 from the NMU 29 a few series later. But the Cougars defense stood tall. Ailo Børve making a brilliant open field tackle at the line of scrimmage to force a 3rd and 1. And then the defense surging through to get a stop, to force EVU to kick a field goal. Mindy Jackson nailed one from 46 yards to give EVU their first lead of the game, at 10-9. But NMU's offense continued to struggle, while their opponents tried to put the game away. After trading some punts, EVU were running the ball with a mix of Jacob Herron and Marco Jones, they had over a 6 and a half minute drive that got down into the NMU 3 yard line. Perfect moment to bury the Cougars, right? Wrong.

Marco Jones got the ball with the intention to go up the middle on second & goal, but Urk McCauley had other ideas. The Quebecois DT nailed him in the backfield, and landed the perfect punch- on the football. The fumble was recovered by Bailo Guissé at the 6, which gave the team new life. Can't help but think- Gauge Lawson probably wouldn't have fumbled in that situation, right? The world may never know. But a huge blown opportunity. And finally, they were ready. 1:51 left, 1 timeout, and the football. All they needed is a field goal. Felix Ström going 2/2 on 4th down from this drive. They got to the 44, and then

The clock is stopped, with 10 seconds left in the game. NMU is out of timeouts, and they have a 3rd and 10 from their own 44 yard line. NMU Head Coach Lance Kabuye is on the sideline.

Head Coach Lance Kabuye is slightly stressed out. He sees Addo Uster on the opposite sideline, almost giddy. But he can't think about his fellow Banijan right now. Kabuye's quickly chatting with his offensive coordinator through the headset as Felix Ström prepares to huddle. "Hey, call one of the plays where we've got the slot running the skinny post. Over the middle." Lance Kabuye said. He had seen something in the defense- he just hoped the freshman, after a rough debut cold off the bench, could make the throw that would likely be under pressure.

"Over the middle? We've got no timeouts coach." Offensive Coordinator Idirissa Ouattara. "You sure you want that?"

"This is college, the clock will stop." Lance Kabuye said. "Get the play in, man!" Ouattara barked the play out to Felix Ström over his headset, as Ström relayed the play to its teammates. The EVU crowd was fairly loud(for a 3,000 seater anyways), but the home fans were making about as much noise as possible. Felix Ström got the ball snapped, and as expected, EVU came with a heavy blitz, with 7 blitzers. But NMU were prepared. The TE picked up one blitzer, while Apollo Esther picked up another one in the backfield. With time to throw, Ström threw an absolute laser over the middle, a 20 yard strike to Zachary Lewis, who was immediately taken down. "SPIKE! SPIKE!" Kabuye yelled alongside the rest of his sideline. Ström hustled his troops to the line. The clock was stopped at 4 seconds. Once the ref started the clock, Ström spiked the ball with just 3 seconds left in the game.

"Hell fucking yeah! What a throw!" Lance Kabuye said to Felix Ström as he jogged off the field. "You've done enough kid." The Special Teams field goal unit then jogged onto the field. At this point, of course, EVU had two timeouts. Although Dwayne Markson was a true freshman, on the road, with a chance to win a rivalry game, Lance Kabuye was not concerned. Markson was a prototypical Chromatik kicker- one of the sport's most valuable commodities. But he was concerned with his holder, Alicia Woodbrough. To say she's struggled this season has been an understatement. Multiple muffed holds? Not even been a great punter, her first position. And now, game on the line. Behind him, he saw the team's equipment manager put the Sally Trophy on the bench- where the EVU team would come pick it up if this field goal attempt went wrong.

As the FG unit lined up, right before the snap, Addo Uster called a timeout on the other side. "Shit." Lance Kabuye muttered to himself. Markson kicked the ball through the uprights. Uster might really make him kick it three times. And the pressure- on Woodbrough too, his punter. The tactic could ice a holder who was feeling all kinds of pressure. The FG unit then lined up for the re-kick. Right before the snap, again, Uster called timeout. This time, Woodbrough bobbled the snap- but fortunately, the play didn't count. Of course Uster was frustrated himself that he called the timeout, but the pressure continued to build on Woodbrough and Markson.

Woodbrough came over to the sideline. "Don't worry Alicia." Lance Kabuye said. "You got this. Just like in practice. We're 3/3 on field goals today. This is the time." He hit the top of her helmet, and then sent the FG unit back out one last time. Elephant Valley had no timeouts remaining. This would be the one that mattered. 52 yards to win it. "C"MON GUYS!" Kabuye yelled from the sideline. He was standing- everybody else on the sideline was on a knee. The crowd was making noise. Good snap, Woodbrough caught it and a quality hold. Markson smashed his foot through the ball- and absolutely drilled the game-winning kick with 0:00 left on the clock.

"YES!" Lance Kabuye yelled, leaping into the air. The team poured onto the field as Markson sprinted towards the away fan section, and was mobbed by his teammates. Ström was running around with the Sally Trophy in hand. Kabuye, after exchanging some hugs, shook Addo Uster's hand. What a game, what a finish. Northern's playoff hopes- alive and well.

NORTHERN MORAVICA, continued from page one.

Ström threw a 20 yard strike over the middle. After failed attempts to ice the kicker, Dwayne Markson drilled from 52 yards for the win, the freshman not getting rattled. The team celebrated with the Sally Trophy. It was one hell of a finish to a defensive battle. The freshman backup QB, Felix Ström, getting his moment. Lance Kabuye said that there was no status on Wagner-Young's injury, but that the Ranorian Quarterback was 'probable' for NMU's week 9 home game against RUoN.

Loyola-Istria, having built a 28-3 lead at halftime, is teetering on the brink of disaster. They've given up 21 consecutive points, and are in danger of what would surely be the biggest single-game collapse in Loyola history, as they sit on defense early in the 4th quarter in the midst of yet another methodical drive by the Salamantics.

Head Coach Alanso Isa was pacing on the sideline. His team had yet another brilliant first half against the Salamantics, exploding out to a huge lead. They had put their foot on the throttle from the word go in that game, and they had never let up. From the opening kickoff, literally. Wilhelm Ouattara-Fischer ran the opening kickoff back 97 yards for a touchdown to immediately silence the home crowd, and the game was on.

Ebou Hairte lit up the Professors defense in the first half. He had thrown for 230 yards in the first half alone, and a pair of touchdowns, a 22 yarder to Russell Farmer and a 9 yarder to true freshman slot receiver Timon Ogweyo. Gotthard Koulibaly added a 2 yard plunge late in the second quarter, and the Blue Thunder had spent an entire half absolutely dominating their conference rivals, taking a 28-3 lead into halftime.

But you know what they say about 28-3 leads. Sparked by brilliant play from their quarterback, Dagunak Juldhauthaunden, they had stormed back, scoring three offensive touchdowns in the 3rd quarter. They were helped, of course, by an Eric van Geel fumble on his own half of the field. But that brought us to the present moment.

28-24 to the Blue Thunder, 12 minutes left in the game. The Professors were driving again. Could the Blue Thunder really blow a 25 point lead in the span of 20 minutes? Was that really, humanly possible? Well, it was happening. The Professors currently had the ball at the Blue Thunder 40 yard line, and were facing a 3rd and 4. Alanso Isa's stress levels were rising. He was barking at his players. "We've got to get to the quarterback!" He screamed from the sideline. Then, he saw them spread out. He had to try something, anything, to slow down Dagunak Juldhauthaunden. He signalled for a nickelback corner blitz. "C'mon- get to this fucking guy." Isa muttered. Alexander Ackermann came down from the safety slot to cover the slot receiver- they'd run a single high safety.

The blitz came. But the tackle picked up the corner- and left DE Justin Peterson on a beeline to the QB. Looking for his hot read, he threw it to the slot receiver as he was hit by the Kalactanian lineman. But Alexander Ackermann stepped in front of the pass on the out route and picked it off. "YES ALEX!" Alanso Isa said. The whole bench, which had been a depressed silent place for a little bit, had exploded. "GO GO GO!" But the Ranorian safety did not need any encouragement. He flew down the sideline, and there was not going to be a single Ko-orenite on the field who would catch him. He dove into the end zone at the end of the play for six points.

"YES!" Alanso Isa yelled as he pumped his fist. 6 points for the Blue Thunder- and just like that, stunningly, his team that was on the brink of disaster had just made a stunning play to deflate the home crowd, and turn this game around.

Silverleaf University strutted into Friedgen Stadium on the campus of Woodstock City College as owners of a perfect 8-0 record and as Sequoia Conference champions.

They walked in and some of the players taunted the Climbers supporters who lined up outside the stadium to get in to watch their team play their home finale against a team that demolished them in an away match that wasn't even close.

The stakes may have been much lower for this matchup with City College playing essentially for pride and possible bowl position on their way to their non-conference schedule against a team that was looking to pad its record and bolster their resume for the poll watchers, but the Climbers certainly didn't play like a team that was playing out the string. The Climbers broke the match open in the fourth quarter with a blocked field goal and a pick-six leading the way and the Climbers dealt the Goblins their first loss of the season with a 40-23 victory.

Quarterback Cal Barkley threw for 233 yards on 18-of-31 attempts and threw for a touchdown before he left in the second half after a "minor" sprain of his knee. Backup quarterback Matt Shipley completed 5-of-7 passes and led the Climbers on a drive that gave them a field goal that would prove to be the match-winning points. Shipley found wide receiver Buddy Holcomb in the end zone for a 14-yard scoring strike on 3rd and goal that forced the Goblins into a no-huddle offence. The Goblins drove 58 yards on seven plays before defensive end Alphonso Carraway sacked Austin Garner on third and 8 to force a 35-yard field goal attempt to give the Goblins a 24-23 lead. Isaiah Rigby hit the field goal, but left tackle Hailie Tolbert was called for holding to push the field goal back 10 yards. On the re-try, Carraway blocked the attempt and safety Tim Beaucamp scooped up the attempt and returned it to the house with 6:14 remaining.

That return touchdown gave the Climbers a 10-point lead and forced the Goblins to again operate without a huddle, this time eschewing the ground game and causing Garner to look downfield. Carraway forced him out of the pocket on a third and 11 from the Goblins 43-yard line and he tried to force the ball into Tracy Noel at the Woodstock 34, but cornerback Pete Carter intercepted Garner and returned it 66 yards to pay dirt. After Matt Andersen's extra point made it 37-21. After the Goblins turned the ball over on downs with 2:41 left, Andersen hit a 47-yard field goal to give City College a 40-21 lead. The Climbers forced another interception as Dontrell Haskins picked off Garner on 3rd and 18 inside the Woodstock 2 with 58 seconds left. The Goblins had all of their timeouts and used them as Woodstock opted to run the ball with a sneak by Shipley gaining two yards, a run by fullback Matt Zastudil gaining one and a rush by Bill Crotty gaining two. That set up fourth down with 47 ticks remaining and punter Carson Landers standing eight yards deep in his end zone.

"Coach," Landers told manager James Arthur before he jogged onto the pitch, "I'm going to intentionally give them a safety so we can free kick it from the 20."

Arthur looked back at his punter for a second, then realised that he was right. A two-pointer would only make the score 40-23 in favour of Woodstock and would force the Goblins to drive the length of the field without a timeout.

"Go for it," he said. Landers managed to burn nine seconds before he drew a defender close to him and then casually stepped out of the end line. He smirked as the referee raised his hands and then joined them with arms bent for the signal for a safety. It gave the Goblins 39 seconds left to attempt to make up a three-possession deficit, which failed on four consecutive pass attempts from Garner that fell incomplete. Finally, with just 23 seconds left, Shipley jogged onto the pitch as the Climbers lined up in victory formation for the kneel down to end the proceedings. Woodstock had gotten the win, and even though there was some debate about the importance of the result, the fact was that the wags who were hyping the Goblins for demolishing all comers now could no longer do so. Woodstock had beaten the unbeaten. The Climbers had crested Mount Everest.

Home and Away: Montgomery Scared of Flying?

There's many massive effects that moving back to Equestria from Rushmore has done for Karditan, but one you might not have thought of is the increased travel time to most of the places we play against in international sports tourneys. With the vast majority of notable sporting nations residing in one of 4-5 "sporting regions" (please don't start the argument about which do and don't count in the comments), easy access to shorter flights abounded while we were nested in their midst. Nowadays the flights are much longer and always have several legs. It can take a real toll players who don't adapt well to the travelling process, and I've got good reason to believe Pride QB Johnny Montgomery is of that sort.

After last week's trouncing of Cavsux they've played four games each at home and away this NCSF season. Points scored at Ledbetter? A respectable, perhaps even profligate for a Karditani team, one-hundred and eighteen. Away? Forty-nine. That's less than half! And while you might not be surprised at a team scoring 49 in four games, that's a stark difference nonetheless. There's gotta be a reason for that, and from how incredibly shaky Montgomery was while visiting Sadeg State I think he got real queasy going through that there interstellar portal they've got in southeastern Rushmore. Certainly don't help that being transported thousands of lightyears away happened right after some two dozen hours in airplanes. It can be real disorienting!

The kicker here, though, is Airtime that they've won more on the road than they've lost despite the lack of points. And that points to some good ol' fashion Karditani football, with the 0-6 win over Staramara and the 0-3 over Sadeg being some of the finest examples of Pride defense we have on record. There's nothing more satisfying than shutting out a team in front of their own crowd. But then, why're we losing so much at home? Look no further than the defense's numbers: sixteen points allowed on the road, almost all of them coming from that 13-13 disaster overtime loss to Royal Armitage. At Ledbetter? One-hundred and eight. That's only ten less than we've scored! And an absolute disgrace. We must expect better from our defenders, and figure out why the hell they're so much worse at home. Did we catch that weird disease Felswyr had where they played way better on the road? Who knows. Hopefully our defensive coordinator. That's their job, y'know.

OOC: Of course, if you wish to enter a sports film to be reviewed, send me a TG or PM with basic premises, ideas, etc, and we'll talk further. If you've done something before, of course, we can pick it up from there as well. There is only one condition - that it must be a foreign film covering Québécois sports scene/plot, or a film covering foreign sports/plot content but directed/produced by a Québécois.

'100 Years of Sporting Films': '1988' Review

★★★★

Pierre-Eric Marechal

For me, the most definitive image of the Renegade Classic - the college football rivalry between Queen's College at Cornwall and the Universite du Saguenay that have been held every year since 1967 - wasn't really about the famous 1988 brawl that cleared the benches for both sides at the end of the 'Domers vs. Gaels' match. Or even the endless recruiting battles that have come in the recent decades, which we've come to associate with Heo Myeong-Shin and Ian Lautner, both guys whose parents were the alumni of the Cornwall school, picking one of their worst rivals.

No. Instead, my image about the rivalry and the 1988 match was how emotional the players on both sides have gotten at various points of the matches, the marching bands on their own duels at the north and the south sections, and the students drinking and drinking as the match went down to a last-second touchdown that brought the 33-31 victory. As it turned out, the match became more than a 90-on-90 MMA match, and the one with genuine heroics and storylines leading up to and concluding after it. As I grew older and older, I was able to see those more clearly, and we still remember the rivalry for it.

'1988', The fascinating 2012 documentary by Christiane Yeom-Bourgault came at the middle of the undefeated 14-0 Tiger Bowl championship season for the Saguenay Fighting Irish team that's struggled for relevance in most of the previous fifteen years before that, which revisits the famous rivalry and the 'Domers vs. Gaels' match. The evening match on the October 25, 1988, the date widely regarded as the most important in the rival history, was a special one of own. I remember growing up as a college sports fan in South Bend, where the Fighting Irish and the Sakers of QWBL were the kings and the queens, and we always had the key rivalries and historic dates matched up. That sense of the loyalty to the school whose golden dome stood tall effectively set the tone when it comes to the discussion of college sport rivalries, in an era where we see greater challenges to maintain them to younger, more urbanised audiences.

With both schools being Tiger Bowl favourites (Saguenay was ranked #2 and Queen's College #1 at the time of the upset), all the media attention had gone into the times, just as a COVID-88 pandemic (OOC: this is RP'd as coming from past-time, 70 years ago, and there is no COVID-19 allowed on Quebecois soil) had started to break through the country. With media all present to witness it, the series of bench-clearing brawls throughout the day, which had caused five unscheduled interruptions into the match, and the post-match exchanging of gloves between both teams were quite impactful.

Both schools were landed with multi-million Quebecois pounds in fines, and both head coaches were suspended for next two games, something that people had viewed as either appropriate or deliberate, almost as if a conspiracy is against them. Ten minutes into the match, late Saguenay wide receiver Jeremy Boudrias says this is how people see him- the guy who nearly costed him the win thanks to excessive celebration on the playoffs. 'I know people still recall the episode, and of course they still blame me for nearly costing what's going to be the greatest win,' says Boudrias on his 2020 interview. 'So of course I got my ass whooped by both my teammates and those players. Fortunately our kicker Terry got it right, and she saved my ass.'

But the most important thing that we learn on this piece as Boudrias, Golden Gaels' running back Son Yeong-Min, and the Saguenay defensive coordinator Patrice O'Day reconstructed the match, was how quickly the narratives focused around the rivalry and the season, and not as much on the actual match. With careful direction taken by Yeom-Bourgault, a Southern Manitoba film school alumna herself (!), the players' own stories are how we get to see it. The extensive use of documents, as well as memorabilia and eyewitnesses brought by both schools and the Big 3 of national newspapers (The Taegukgi, Montreal Praetorian and Le Mazepa), they are able to rebuild the situation with a seven-dimensional portrayal. In the film you see the stories of enthusiastic fans from all across the multiverse, the players who see their college football opportunity as a chance to change their lives, and the prideful coaches who have all the pride to fight for. So when all the emotions came into the turf, as the players fought for the ball every play and then came to brawl each other, it's almost as if the perfect storm's ready to brew.

As for O'Day and other coaches (O'Day was the only one of six coordinators combined available for interviews, though past footages were used here), they too get caught up with heat of the times. If anything, O'Day's perfectly casted into it - the man in his 40s whose marriage was falling apart, but whose schematic ingenuity would eventually end up with head coaching gigs in the QFL. In '1988', he explains how the match had come at a particularly transformative in his life, as he was fighting depression for years and was also undergoing visitation rights for his sons at the time of the match. Suffering from doses of amnesia, he still couldn't recall what exactly happened that led up to it, but gives sufficient clues to the audience for them to work it out on own. 'We have been living under difficult times, and under the surface there's always a thing or two that help explain for it,' O'Day answers close to the end of the film. 'Do I think that things would have been different under nineties or o-o's? Probably, but we can't just wonder around it.'

In the subsequent years since the brawl, which was also marked as the peak moment of the Fighting Irish's Tiger Bowl run, the Gaels vs. Domers match continued well into the legends, the list of which has only grown since the film's release four decades ago. And so have the consequences of the every match. In the immediate weeks following the brawls, the QIS introduced a series of safety regulations that for a decade prevented the fans from entering the arena. Stricter penalties were introduced for penalties and head-to-head targetting. Queen's College has won two Tiger Bowls between 1988 and 2012, while the Fighting Irish fell short and struggled majorly before eventually winning it months after it. Both coaches have retired, and 12 players ended up in the Quebecois College Football Hall of Fame (7 Irish, 5 Golden Gaels).

Still, there is a bit of tristesse with the human drama that 1988 does not ignore. In the 1997 QFL match between Reneegrad Ravens and Labrador Roughriders, the Roughriders running back Son Yeong-Min is interviewed by the QBC on the day after the passing of Joel Hainsey, the Fighting Irish linebacker who became his teammate for two years with the Roughriders. This was the first match after Hainsey's suicide, two years after the two-time pro bowler's retirement from the QFL, and it was a particularly...solemn moment after the 47-14 win for the Fighting Irish. Unlike with the Emerald Shelagh between Saguenay and Southern Manitoba, there isn't as much hatred involved in the film, and Son struggled to answer the questions. Since his retirement from QFL, Son's spent four decades working with the Ivancsik-Giguere Foundation and the I-Heart-Quebec Foundation to help youth and professional football players with mental health and active living practices.

Of course, those still living have moved on with their lives, whether in football and on a different profession. Four decades after the release of the film, 14 players and 4 coaches from the match are still living, and it wasn't until 2038 that the players actually had a celebration/commemoration event marking the occasion of what's still viewed as one of the greatest college football matches played. In the remastered version, set to be released at the 2052 HIFF this October, the film has an additional, 5-minute section at the very end of the film. There, the players chat and talk about it on a Montreal restaurant, where they were given ceremonial plaques and thank you's by then-NSCF president, Reginald Obry. 'Have we gotten over our hatred? Probably,' Golden Gaels centre Donald McArthur says. 'We were the twenty-somethings back then fighting for everything. Now the life's gotten lot more relaxed, and we don't have a plague to worry about anymore.'

Then and now, 1988 doesn't take a forgiving light towards the spur of random and calculated violence at the 'Domers vs. Gaels' match. What the documentary does instead, however, is how a football match could become a microcosm of everything that's going around those out on the field and the box, and how the flowers of our youth can blossom like a hibiscus (Moogoonghwa).

Introducing! The Top 10 High School Recruits From Ranoria This Season

Treyvon Specter Quick Notes
Size: 6'3", 220 lb
40 Yard Dash Time:* 4.53
Flat Bench Reps, 225:* 11
Attributes: Flexible, Quick, Great Bend
Other Sports: Track
High School: North Ashialand High School
Hometown: North Ashialand, Ranoria
*: Projected

10: Treyvon Specter, EDGE

Speedster off the edge with a talent for getting underneath heavyset offensive tackles. Great spin move as a counter, and adequate power. Capable of dropping into coverage, he'd best fit in a school that prefers lean, faster guys coming off the edge. Played in 2 state championships in high school, 2x all state, 4x all conference honors. However, after Specter broke up with his now ex girlfriend a month ago, allegations of assault were made. Though no charges were formally pressed, it led to Ranoria State pulling his offer after his commitment.

Image

RJ Hall Quick Notes
Size: 6'2", 185 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 4.48
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 7
Attributes: Crisp route runner, solid and late hands
Other Sports: Baseball, basketball
High School: Clellinsport Middle and High School
Hometown: Clellinsport, Ranoria
*: Projected

9: RJ Hall, WR

Certainly the prospect coming from the smallest school on this list, RJ Hall is a solid wideout who has solid fundamental techniques expected from higher level players. He is sharp coming in and out of routes and rarely drops passes, also being proficient at reeling in balls after flashing his hands late. Concerns include his lack of playing time against top competition, and he'll need time to adjust there.

Image

Franklin Pillsburry Quick Notes
Size: 6'7", 305 lb
40 Yard Dash Time:* 5.34
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 23
Attributes: Aggressive, Mauler
Other Sports: Wrestling
High School: Highport Central High School
Hometown: Highport, Ranoria
*: Projected

8: Franklin Pillsburry, IOL

Pillsburry is a real specimen, with freakishly long arms and a nasty streak. Those long arms - 36.5" to be exact, certainly hurt his press numbers, but make no mistake - the weight room numbers will translate disproportionately on the field as a result. Room to pack on good size on his frame, since he's stayed somewhat slim for wrestling in high school. Played in the All-Ranoria high school game after his senior year, 3x all-conference honors.

Image

Jaire Alford Quick Notes
Size: 6'5", 285 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 5.04
Flat Bench Reps, 225:* 26
Attributes: Twitchy, Disruptive, Leader
Other Sports: N/A
High School: Dietrich Catholic Intitute
Hometown: Dietrich, Ranoria
*: Projected

7: Jaire Alford, IDL
Alford is a step-in-the-room and make the team better kind of guy. He's very strong and remarkably fast for his size, but his gap movement, discipline, and swim move in the pass and run game are what make him stand out. Expect Alford to be someone his entire class looks to as a leader, and a dude who's going to establish himself as an alpha dog the second he gets in the weight room or on the field. 3 year captain in high school.

Image

Ernest Bello Quick Notes
Size: 6'3", 190 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 4.49
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 9*
Attributes: Elusive, Clutch, Poised
Other Sports: Basketball
High School: Ranoria City Catholic High School
Hometown: Ranoria City, Ranoria
*: Projected

6: Ernest Bello, QB

In the toughest conference in Ranoria, Bello was 3x conference champ and 2x state champ in high school, and all state every year despite being on a generally mediocre team. That happened because he's a freak of a QB, with over 5,000 career rushing yards and 92 touchdowns thanks to rare speed and incredible elusiveness. So...what's the issue? Well, the leftie was 237/ 562 passing in high school for 3,450 yards with a 47:35 TD/INT ratio. A sure red flag, and it will need to be addressed by his coaching staff.

Image

Harvey Klein Quick Notes
Size: 6'8", 335 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 5.43*
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 28*
Attributes: High-Ceiling, Talented, Massive
Other Sports: N/A
High School: Ranoria City Central High School
Hometown: Ranoria City, Ranoria
*: Projected

5: Harvey Klein, IDL

Harvey freaking Klein. Klein may have the highest upside of anyone on this list, but he slips because he didn't necessarily show it in high school, with 93 career tackles, 14 sacks, and 30 tackles for a loss. Solid production from a defensive tackle, sure, but we expected more from a physical talent like this one. He'll likely give a defensive line coach headaches, but he's flashed the ability to be the most dominant IDL Ranoria's produced since Kevin Gerhart. Worst case scenario, you get a really big run stuffer.

Image

Derek Pierce Quick Notes
Size: 6'2", 235 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 4.71
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 19
Attributes: Disciplined, Thumper, Passionate, Tough
Other Sports: Baseball
High School: Southport High School
Hometown: Southport, Ranoria
*: Projected

4: Derek Pierce, ILB - Committed to Cold Hill University

Typical farmboy - a big strong leader with a somewhat terrifying work ethic and down to earth attitude. Small town player who's going to go down in school history as the all-time tackles and sacks leader despite missing 13 games due to injuries. Pierce won all-state honors as a sophomore, but missed out in his final two seasons due to a lack of playing time, having to settle for all-conference in those two seasons. 353 career tackles, 34 sacks as an inside linebacker.

Image

Kerryon Spencer Quick Notes
Size: 6'3", 200 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 4.45
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 13*
Attributes: "It," tough, strong hands, confident
Other Sports: Baseball, Basketball
High School: White Haven High School
Hometown: Nashville, Ranoria
*: Projected

3: Kerryon Spencer, WR

Whatever it is, Spencer has it. Moxie, swagger, confidence, this guy is a leader and he plays like every ball is coming to him, and when it inevitably does, he doesn't drop it, he attacks it as if the idea of anyone else getting it would bring dishonor to his family. Perhaps not quite as physically gifted as some other guys we've listed, but Spencer has no less matched their production and will look to contribute immedietely at the college level. Three time conference champion.
Image

Ifeadi Weeks Quick Notes
Size: 6'2", 210 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 4.49*
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 12*
Attributes: Enforcer, instinctive, ballhawk
Other Sports: Archery
High School: East Madison High School
Hometown: Madison, Ranoria
*: Projected

2: Ifeadi Weeks, SS

Ifeadi Weeks is the closest thing we've seen to Judas Wolfson since Judas Wolfson. Weeks is a big hitter who will go for the ball at any opportunity, and has physical gifts out the gazoo. He's been a great run stuffer in the box of a sideline-to-sideline cover guy on the back end. There's nothing he can't do. However, Weeks had a troubled childhood. He's been very open about football being his way out, but he served multiple juvenile detention sentences for assault. The talent is there...but how tight will his leash have to be?

Image

Akhello Volson Quick Notes
Size: 6'1", 195 lb
40 Yard Dash Time: 4.40*
Flat Bench Reps, 225: 8*
Attributes: Island, ballhawk, freak athlete, arrogant
Other Sports: Baseball
High School: Pittsburgh Christian High School
Hometown: Pittsburgh, Ranoria
*: Projected

1: Akhello Volson, CB - Verbally committed to Richardson University

The man himself. Akhello Volson is a three year starter, two year captain, and three time all-state selection. He's not huge on the whole run support thing despite prototypical size, but the cornerback is an absolute island in coverage, and allowed just one catch in his three years as a varsity starter to help lead his team to three straight playoff berths. Not officially committed.

NSFB: A Stunner Before Chaotic Finale (Earth Trophy II)

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Dec 15, 2021 7:00 am

Sometimes, chaos is welcome and sometimes it is not. With a 3-way tie at the top of the Mineral conference with 2 games to play, every game was going to matter until the very end...including today in Green City. News reached this land before kickoff that UAlexandropolis had beaten UCBP 24-13 at home, meaning that the Redbirds now lead the way in the conference with a big game in Notts to come. All signs looked to be pointing towards a de-facto Conference Title Game in the Horseshoe but in order to set that in stone, the Trent State Feathercaps had to retain the Earth Trophy here in The Palace. Johnny Bridgeford knew that this game was very important indeed, even before the result from New Gesem came through, but in his way stood a tall task. The Green City Royal Eagles were in a good mood heading into tonight for three reasons: this was Homecoming Week here in the AU school, Paul Abdullahi had dragged this team to a 2-game winning streak and had just the previous week knocked off UCBP on the road to set up the chaos the conference was now facing. They entered this contest with the winds at their back and crowd too as The Palace was certainly rocking when both teams came out to start the "First Defence".

This game's whole mood would be summed up in the kickoff when Immaculate Nakisuuyi took Kelly Maine's opening kick, took it on the 5-yard line and returned it past everyone and into the endzone to send The Palace into an immediate frenzy. Glory Oparanozie made the FG and just like that, 7-0 Eagles. This act would begin a first-half shootout of such drama and brilliance as both Moses Igbinoghene and Leon Gallas would turn the books on and duke it out once again. Igbinoghene would score 3 TDs in the first half (1 to Lucky Sithole-Sita, 1 to Gilbert Nyamutsamba and 1 rushing TD by himself) while Oparanozie converted all 3 PATs. Gallas, meanwhile, responded in turn with 3 TDs (2 to Victor Que-et-Vous and 1 to Fremont Whitehorse) and with BF Xander Tiovannen going 3/3 as well, the game would head into the half with GCU ahead 28-21.

The second half would decide things as Fortune Eze focused his might on the TSU O-Line and Pierre Grandestois had little to no response. For the entire 2nd half of this game, the only points that the Feathercaps could manage was a lonely FG from Tiovannen. That was never going to be enough in this contest and that allowed GCU and Igbinoghene used that time wisely to score twice more in this game, once to Victory Prince-Brown via throw (surprisingly) and another rushing TD in the 4th. Oparanozie only went 1/2 on her PATs during the second half, but that wouldn't stop that party that was to follow. For the first time, the Earth Trophy was heading to the AU and this time, it will be for the whole offseason as it stands. The fans rushed the field for the first time at The Palace and my goodness, it felt so good to see that.

GCU will look to end the MIneral slate strongly against Stevan Vaalburger College while for TSU, they will head to Sherwood Field with their fate potentially in their hands when the Redbirds come to town. UAlexandropolis will certainly be hungry for this one and many will be expecting the Caps to do that same, with the permutations as follows. If UA wins in Notts, they're the Mineral Champs no matter what. If TSU wins and UCBP does not, then TSU will claim the Mineral Title on an H2H sweep against the Redbirds. If both TSU and UCBP win, then we would have a 3-way tie at the top of the tree that would have to be decided on not H2H record, but H2H PD. Yes, it would be that tight. The Mineral has to have a champion and in Belle Haven and in Notts, one will be crowned!
