Reviewing the group draw is standard practice for any national team manager.

Fortunately for Sarzonian national baseball team manager Geoff Yancey, he didn't have to juggle that task with making sure Fleetwood Park sanitation was up to code. He was able to focus his energies on the baseball aspects of his job, namely, his decision to continue to employ the services of Luke Brinkley as designated hitter for any Stars home matches at Fleetwood Park, or at any away ballpark where the hosts also employed the DH.

Keeping Brinkley's earth-shattering home run potential available for at minimum 70 percent of the schedule was of the utmost importance to Yancey. It meant a man who not only could take deep anyone at any time, but a man who also had the propensity for clutch bombs when his team needed them the most. Just ask the broken spirits of Delaclav relief pitchers who witnessed Brinkley essentially hit a walk-off homer against them in a decisive Game 5. He examined the teams in Group C with the Stars. Cassadaigua. Traditional rivals, a team that sent the Stars home from the knockout rounds in back to back Classics. South Americanastan. Hannasea. Aji No Moto. Soldera.

The Stars would open the 53rd edition of the World Baseball Classic with South Americanastan. The Bears would open the competition for Sarzonia at Fleetwood Park for a three-match set. They'd travel to Hannasea, where they would employ the DH, then host Aji No Moto. They'd follow that up with a trip to Soldera, where they would have to leave Brinkley on the bench for the first time as the Snakes announced they would not use the designated hitter at Prince Francis Stadium in Branwen. They'd close the first half by hosting Cassadaigua, which meant they would play away to the Fillies for the final series.

"We know those series against Cassadaigua are going to be intense," Yancey said. "It's just like facing Delaclava in the two final series of each half of the previous Classic." Yancey then gave a look and a headshake. He didn't want too many more reminders of the previous Classic. Not when his Stars stumbled badly out of the gate as the second ranked team in the multiverse and were in serious jeopardy of actually being eliminated from the group stage for the first time in a long time. Not when it took a furious comeback to finish as the team with the worst record among the 10 teams who won their groups. They'd face Milchama in the Round of 32 and felt fortunate to sweep the Warriors. Then they battled groupmates Delaclava again and won a hotly-contested series in four matches before running out of petrol against TJUN-ia.

Yes, that classic brought back bad memories. A nightmare series against an unranked Venmere side that didn't even see fit to identify the players who won two of the three matches they hosted against the Stars. Another nightmare series against that same team at Fleetwood Park that was, fortunately, only a literal nightmare (the Stars would actually sweep the series that really counted in the table). Losing two of three to every team in the group except for Ranoria in the first half before winning two out of three in each of their remaining series against the rest of the teams in their schedule. They ultimately finished 25-15 after the 7-8 beginning, but Yancey said he expected the team to be much more motivated with the third highest ranked team in the group paying the visit to Fleetwood Park.

"I think we may have started out taking Venmere for granted a little bit," Yancey said gruffly. "The Bears are a different animal," he added before realising what he said. "No pun intended."

Team Zwangzug, known as the "Zebras," were an early force in the WBC but later faded from relevance. They competed consistently through WBC31, reappeared for 39 and 40, and then popped back again in cycle 49, having entered the last few since then. In WBC52, they returned to form by finishing in third place yet again (for the eighth time in history). Happily, the 39-40 cycle saw Felix Wainwright break the alleged radio announcers' curse. This doesn't mean we'll necessarily have competent announcers, or any announcers at all; just that we could have some capable of holding down the job for multiple cycles. If we wanted to.

Like their distant ancestors, the Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson). They tend to be somewhat new-mathy with regards to not bunting, not stealing very much, etc.

Manager: Wenjie Liu (f). Claims to be affiliated with the FTC Secret Squirrels, but given that we can't even be bothered to scorinate our league, we can't even vouch for that. She knows what she's doing, though. We hope.

Factbook is ludicrously out of date by now and just linked for tradition's sake. More information about the country is available on the wiki and is sporadically being added to. If you RP first, please follow my lineup and rotation (or ICly justify any substitutions). Feel free to pick my runscorers, RP injuries to my players, and eject my players. You can be relatively creative; however, if you want to do something like literal godmoding, or something that would cause harm to my citizens/in my country, please telegram me first.

A Traditional Milchamian Preview

Milchama is back in the international sports arena. After an interminable wait, Milchama is back in an international tournament. I see some cricket fans are saying, "What about the GCF?" to which I say the test championship is not a tournament but a series of bilaterals with an arbitrary table. Great fun, cricket is great but it's not a tournament. Anyway, sorry for getting off topic there, we're back with baseball! Milchama is in their second WBC and this time we're actually sending the A team and not a U21 team that did kinda ok at a regional tournament. AO gets the B team because, whatever, the goal is to win the WBC and not the AOBS. Despite breaking at the last one we were in Pot 4 for the draw and only the Top 2 advance to octos which is a tough break for 48. However, with the A team, Margaret, and some mediocre competition I think Milchama should be able to make it to the second round.

So who are we against? Well let's look at the list.

Group G
Kriegiersien(18) - Higher seeded then us last time, both in terms of rank (duh) and in terms of seed. Kriegersien was the 8th seed in the playoffs. Still got swept by Hannasea because being top of the group was a lucky fluke. It's clear that when there is a slight amount of pressure applied Kriegiersien slips up so, obviously, they will not advance. Expect at least 4 wins against them.

Muralos(UR) - Unranked and has no history. Not very good. Expect 5 or 6 wins against them. It is baseball, so losing one would not be a catastrophe.

Mylderm(UR) - See above. What's with all the M nations in this group? It's Group G, not Group M. We'll include Liventia as an honorary M because L is one before M and it makes winning the M Cup actually hard. Yes we will be tracking the M Cup.

Milchama(39) - That's us! We're only good at one sport in the multiverse and it's baseball. Though we might be decent at cricket, TBD.

TJUN-ia(3) - The top seed in this group. Seemingly taking a Milchamian path of being really good at baseball and only kinda ok at soccer. I respect them for that. Made semis the last time out as the second seed so are actually pretty good at this. We can take 'em but it's going to be difficult and will definitely lose a series or two. Mark us down for 2-4 or 3-3.

Liventia(15) - Also had a higher seed than us, both in rank and in the WBC playoffs, and still got swept. In other words, another choker. Liverpool England is one thing but Liventia is another and both of them choke all the time. Also, they only beat us by one game last time and we were an unranked U21 team, with a real team this should be a pretty clear cakewalk. Anywhoo, another team that we should be able to easily beat, though again, expect some tough series so a 4-2 record should be about right especially because that's what we did last time.

If we add up all the wins and losses we get between 21 and 23 wins. I'd put us down in the lower edge of that range but that should still be good enough for second place easily.

Of course no Milchama pre-tournament post would be complete without asking Margaret for some help. So to help we brought in our Margaret experts:

"Why are we doing this in a newspaper?"

"Yeah the whole point of our exchanges is that it's supposed to be spoken. That's why there are quote marks. Doing this in a IC newspaper format makes no sense"

"You realize you can just print the prayer. Like we have siddurim, it's not illegal or anything"

"Yeah if you're already committing heresy by praying to a false god then you might as well go all the way and just do the Margaret thing without a weird change in RP format in the middle"

"Maybe it will give us good luck?"

"Maybe but this weird"

"Agreed"

"Also how do you sacrifice a rubber chicken in a paper?"

"How do you run naked in a paper?"

"Photos"

"I guess"

"Yeah"

"Let's end this"

"OK"

"Then "say" as I "say" and do as I do"

''Ringa pakia!''
''Uma tiraha!''
''Turi whatia!''
''Hope whai ake!''
''Waewae takahia kia kino!''
''Ka mate, ka mate''
''Ka ora, ka ora''
''Ka mate, ka mate''
''Ka ora, ka ora''
''Tēnei te tangata pūhuruhuru''
''Nāna nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te rā''
''Ā upane, ka upane''
''Whiti te rā, hī!''

"Now repeat after me!"

"Forini! Forini!"
"Finidi! Finidi!"
"George! George!"
"Oh Brother! Oh brother!"

*They strip and run around for 10 minutes*

"We pray the Margaret of SnubNose 38 and Random Number God that you may deliver us victory over Mylderm and any other infidels that we face in international play"

"Sacrifice the Rubber Chicken!"

*Swoosh of an axe and the chicken is dead*

"Margaret we pray that you take this sacrifice of a rubber chicken in good faith and that by your deliverance Milchama does well in all international competitions"

Cape Breton Military Academy, South Americanastan
Private First Class Frank Monteforte, Outfield

"GO! GO! GO!"

Frank Monteforte scrambled to get under the barbed wire, his elbows driving into the thick mud as his hands gripped his TRR-A1 tightly. DPMG-M99 Machine Guns fired blanks over his head while mud and dirty water splashed onto his face and into his eyes.

"COME ON! COME ON! COME ON!"

As he rushed to get up from the barbed wire pit, the last wire slashed open the back of his Rhodesian Brushstroke pants, putting a deep slash into the back of his combat boots. As he reached his feet, two targets popped out of the ground, prop guns rising to fire a blank at Monteforte, indicating his "death". He dropped to a knee, dispatching the first one with a quick 7x55 paintball round to the head, turning on his down knee towards the other, firing two shots, one flying wide and the other striking the target in the shoulder.

"ONLY A COUPLE MORE TO GO! MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!

Monteforte reached a wall with a rope hanging from it. He swung his TRR-A1 on it's sling towards his back, and gripped the rope with his hands, his feet moving up the wall as he pulled himself upwards. He made a final push to crest the top of the wall, falling on his back into another mud pit. The cold metal of the TRR-A1 jabbed into his back, bruising it, but he moved forward all the same.

He reached a firing range, with 5 stations; 10 meters, 25 meters, 50 meters, 100 meters, and 250 meters, all of them with a target lined up at the labeled distance. He went into prone position at the 10 meter station first, landing 5 shots into the targets chest before performing a gator roll to the next station. He fired 5 times again, hitting his target precisely in the sternum. Another gator roll and he had reached the next station. The recoil pounded into his shoulder as he fired, hot shell casing flying out of the ejection port, as he corralled the gun's recoil to keep it on target. Each shot hit in a different position, one in the "heart" area, another in "Heaven's Gate", yet another round in the "head", while the other two both hit in seperate positions on the torso.

He made another gator roll, reaching the 100 meter station. He pulled the trigger, but a telltale "click" indicated a jam. He pulled the charging handle of the gun, ejecting an empty case, and began firing again. The paint bullets splattered against the target, indicating more hits to the chest as Monteforte began gator rolling to the next station.

As he rolled, he hit the mag release of the weapon, dropping the 20-round magazine into the ground. He quickly inserted another magazine, before zeroing his weapon for 250 meters and firing again. All of his shots hit the target in the torso, and he stood up and walked to the instructor's area, flipping his TRR-A1's fire selector to safe.

"Good news, Private"

Monteforte's face lit up.

"Not only have you completed your rifle qualification at "Expert" level, thus completing all requirements for a promotion to Specialist, the SADF have approved your request for leave to compete in the World Baseball Classic after confirmation from the Bears. You're a free man!"

Monteforte unclipped his helmet, holding it in his hand.

"Thank you, sir."

He began unbuttoning his camouflage uniform, walking back towards the barracks to pack his things.

This was going to be a good winter.

Londinium, Nova Anglicana

Ty Oliver, the newly named manager of the Nova Anglicana Lions national baseball team, sat in his former and current office under Archbishop Stadium in Londinium. Next to him were Lee Brooks, the bench coach, and Alan McBride, the pitching coach. There was a stack of newspapers in front of him.

"Time to Turf Ty, that's what the [Eboracum] Sun headline is," he said. "Oust Oliver is what Orville News is going with. I suppose 'Lions not so lovable losers' from the [Londinium] Herald isn't quite so bad."

"Why are you starting with the tabloid papers?" asked Brooks. "The [Londinium] Democrat is headlined 'Does Challenge portend rocky WBC for Lions?', and the [Londinium] Courier has 'Tough start to Oliver's tenure'. Those are fairer and less sensationalistic."

"Yeah, I mean, come on, who takes Orville News' sports section seriously?" said McBride. "It's a right-wing smear paper. They thrive on negativity."

Oliver sighed. "You're right. It's just hard to see so much negative press. My time with the Capitols in this office was so much happier than my time in this office now. Even when I was a player, we never looked quite this bad."

"So what's the deal?" said Brooks. "How do we get the boys back on track?"

McBride leaned back in his chair. "From my perspective as the pitching coach, the staff has zero confidence right now. A lot of guys remember back-to-back Round of 16 exits; that's a recipe for feeling like you're losing your grip. Add to that the manager got fired and we dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in literal decades and that's a hell of a way to come into a premier event like this."

Brooks nodded. "Taking on #1 Chromatika, and taking a 3-0 lead, it felt like we could be good again. But when Christian [Hammond], our number one guy, gives up that big hit to Rose Dawson, the #8 hitter of all people, and they tie the game? It just disappears and it's no wonder Eric [Norton] had zero control in the ninth. I mean, he didn't even get an out before they walked us off."

"And that bled right over into Eshialand," added McBride. "We should have had confidence facing that kind of team, ranked so much lower than us. But Rocky [Gantt] was jittery, you could see it. Five runs in two innings and it was over. Then the bullpen got beat up too."

"You could see it in game 3, too," said Brooks. "We jumped out to that early lead, but everybody was still nervous. Then when Jonathan [Drake] gave up that run in the fifth, and then again in the sixth, it was like, here we go again. No wonder they tied it up. I'm honestly surprised we lasted until the ninth, when Yang hit that rocket of a shot that barely stayed inside the left field foul pole."

"That was a home run," said McBride. "It got out of here in a hurry. It's a confidence issue on both sides, really. The staff doesn't feel like they can get anyone out in clutch situations, and the fact that we scored only 13 runs in five games despite playing theoretically the weakest team three times doesn't give any pitcher confidence that they can rely on hitters to give them much of a lead. It's huge weight."

"Okay," said Oliver, who had been patiently listening. "So how do we restore confidence? I could give an inspiring speech about my playing days, really get them fired up. Seemed to work when I was the manager here."

Brooks leaned forward in his chair. "There's definitely the emotional and inspirational component to it. Talk about you, but talk about them too. We can probably get one of the techies to rig up a highlight reel, remind our guys of how good they are. Domestic, international, anything we can get our hands on. Self-confidence is the key. This is uncharted territory, being outside of the top 10 and no longer an automatic favorite to go deep. If they don't think they can win, they won't, and it'll get ugly real quick."

"I agree," said McBride. "But we can't forget about the logical and statistical side. We can't have them thinking this is the most important tournament in the world. After all, we've only won it once, and after this tournament, we're only 12-15 lifetime. It's a small sample size, exhibition tournament. It's a good way to get warmed up, but it doesn't say anything about how we'll do. Plus, think about it, Chromatika is the #1 team, QoD is the #7 team, and Eshialand is a rising star in lots of sports. It might have been embarrassing, but it's over now and it doesn't matter. Plus, we're probably not going to be seeing those teams until the playoff round anyway."

Ty Oliver's phone dinged. He absentmindedly picked it up and kept talking. "All of this sounds great. We gotta hit on all fronts, really make 'em believe in themselves. We're going to - f**k."

"What? What? What is it?" asked Brooks.

Oliver gave a wry smile. "Hey Alan, you know how you said we're not going to see any of these teams until the playoffs? Well, QoD's our Pot 1 team, and we play them for our first series."

"S***!" said both coaches.

National Athearan Baseball Team For WBC 53

Well, here Atheara was. Playing in their second edition of the World Baseball Classic. Although no one really has high hopes for this time around, Atheara still wants to take a jab at baseball. It's difficult to believe that this sport is gaining popularity in Atheara, and at around 6 "city" clubs formed. A possible Athearan Baseball League is in the works, but it's in very early designs. But we are not here to worry about a Baseball League, it's the Baseball National Team we are talking about. Let's see how Atheara has evolved from last time.

BASIC INFORMATION
Name : Atheara
Trigramme : AHR
Affiliation : Anaia
Nicknames : Night Watchers (full), Watchers (informal)
Stadium : Coldstone Park (78.900)

Image

Originally supposed to be what would be a football stadium, in half of it's way of development, it was said the stadium turned into a baseball stadium. It was used several fair few times after it's building, but never saw use other than that from the Athearans that would like to play baseball as their hobby until last WBC. The same baseball stadium that was used last World Baseball Classic, Coldstone Park has gained some attraction due to the fact that the Athearan Baseball NT actually used it, and the fact that it will be used again. Not only that, it is home to one of the six "city" clubs that was formed, the Mugendar Blades. Yes, Coldstone Park is in Mugendar. If you want, feel free to look around the city as well.

Team Cassadaigua
Official Roster for World Baseball Classic 53

Home Stadium is the 70,000+ seat Dagan Airways Stadium in Concord Heights

DH: No
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: It is posted here.
Follow my Pitching Rotation: It is posted here.
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: No
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes only if you make it exciting!
Godmod other events: Yes as long as no one dies or is seriously hurt.

Manager- Taylor Bryant, 45 (1st Classic)- The Maddie Polanco era in Cassadagan baseball came to an end with the last Classic as the manager who led the team from WBC’s 41-52 resigned from the team to pursue other opportunities with some believing she will return to Super-Llamaland, where she had a great career as a player. Now, enter the new manager, but not an unfamiliar face to this competition. Taylor Bryant was a mainstay on this team in the mid-to-late (WBC) 40’s, with some memorable heroics in WBC 49, particularly. She’s almost following a similar path as Polanco, with the great playing career and now going into management herself. Our nation would certainly love it if she had the same level of success.

Under Polanco, the team relied heavily on analytics in regards to infield shifts and overall defensive positioning. Expect this to continue under Bryant. Polanco did not really rely on that all that much with pitch counts, and Bryant will also follow that lead with the understanding that all five of these starters are aces on their respective staffs and capable of regularly getting their pitch counts around 100. Don’t expect to see pitch counts get over 110 unless there is a logical reason for doing so.

Starting Rotation (Stats in the last Cassadagan season included)
SP- #33- Brianna Shirley, 32, LHP, Concord Heights Royals, (24-4, 2.15 ERA, 261 K’s)
SP- #28- Jennifer Mandrick, 26, RHP, North Granby Bobcats (20-8, 2.08 ERA, 262 K’s)
SP- #40- Hannah Phelan, 31, LHP, Concord Heights Royals (22-5, 2.39 ERA, 234 K’s)
SP- #45- Kelsey Thomassen, 26, RHP, Brattleboro Brats (20-5, 2.34 ERA, 241 K’s)
SP- #35- Jessica Ashfield, 33, RHP, New Lakeland Tycoons, (19-5, 2.44 ERA, 226 K’s)

You will recognize these names, but how they are being ordered in the rotation is a bit different. Shirley continues to be the ace of the, but Mandrick is now moving into the #2 spot, and it is likely she will continue to move forward in later classics. Phelan has been very consistent, so for now holds the #3 spot over Thomassen. Ashfield moves down from #2 to #5, but don’t take that the wrong way as she has still been great at home.

Bullpen
RP- #31- Victoria Vassar, 31, RHP, Winchester Gamblers, Anytime Relief
RP- #26- Stacie Harper, 23, LHP, Concord Heights Royals, Anytime Relief
RP- #38- Suzi Newkirk, 29, LHP, New Lakeland Tycoons, Long Relief
RP- #30- Zoey Valor, 24, RHP, Columbia Attack Geese, Long Relief
RP- #27- Kiersten Bell, 24, Plymouth Pilots, Short Relief
RP- #36- Madison Mahoney, 32, LHP, Grande Mountain Huskies, Short Relief
RP- #34- Danielle Simms, 32, RHP, Grande Mountain Huskies, Set-up Reliever
CP- #43- Becca Fischer, 34, LHP, New Lakeland Tycoons, Closer

While this group may need some changeover for the next Classic, it did not really need to be messed with for this one, as all players continue to produce at a high level.

Here is our lineup with the players stats from the most recently completed season in Cassadaigua. All players are switch hitters, you don’t get to this level in Cassadaigua without having that ability. Therefore, we use the same lineup when facing lefties or righties.

1) #5- Katie Stephens- CF, Concord Heights Royals, 28 (.331, 10 HR, 71 RBI, 73 SB)
2) #15- Chloe Sorenston- 2B, East Amherst Bison, 26 (.325, 11 HR, 80 RBI, 13 SB)
3) #13- Hailey Morris- 1B, Grande Mountain Huskies, 24 (.314, 42 HR, 126 RBI, 2 SB)**
4) #1- Ashley McKnight- LF, North Granby Bobcats, 24 (.346, 48 HR, 136 RBI, 22 SB)
5) #14- Steffie Kennedy- RF, Brattleboro Brats, 30 (.324, 34 HR, 111 RBI, 39 SB)
6) #4- Erin Jeffries- SS, Northbury Red Foxes, 31 (.310, 20 HR, 101 RBI, 14 SB)**
7) #22- Sarah Peluso- 3B, North Granby Bobcats, 24 (.297, 15 HR, 88 RBI, 1 SB)
8) #55- Melanie Putnam- C, Victoriaville Venom, 27 (.290, 15 HR, 75 RBI, 0 SB)
9) Pitcher

Bench:
#29- Hannah Patterson- C, Starksville Brown Birds, 23
#25- Natalia Coleman- 1B/3B, Goffstown Demons, 25
#4- Courtney Benedict- 2B/SS, Brattleboro Brats, 28*
#2- Adriana Vazquez- OF, Columbia Attack Geese, 31
#11- Avery Breen- OF, Starkville Brown Birds, 34
#12- Sarah Millerson- Utility, Grande Mountain Huskies, 32
#10- Michelle Forrester- Utility, New Lakeland Tycoons, 26*

*- WBC Rookie
**- First time in starting lineup

The one Classic usage of the DH is over since former starting left fielder Tori Fullerton has seen her production drop since the last Classic. Due to this, Ashley McKnight, who was the DH, now moves into left field, and this loses the need for us to use the DH to get Ashley’s bat in the lineup. Hailey Morris, at 1B, is the new face to watch getting regular time, although she has been part of the roster for the last two Classic’s in a bench role.

Kabaka - King
Katikkiro - Prime Minister
Lukiiko- Parliament
Kiongozi- Leader of the Opposition
Quebecois Commonwealth- The Quebecois Commonwealth is an association of nations that have formerly had 'constitutional links' to the Crown of Quebec & Shingoryeo. This includes Quebec & Shingoryeo, Banija, the Busoga Islands, the Gatchingerrak Union, and many other nations that exist ICly but are not created nations on the boards. It serves as a parallel, although not an equivalent, of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Busukuma Post
Covering All of Banija, All of our News, All of the Time

Kobe Azizi's shock retirement sets stage for election in most volatile post-war Banijan election backdrop in years

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- With the war winding down in Nyowani Kitara, and a tenuous temporary ceasefire taking hold in Nyowani Kitara, the attention of Banijan politicos and Banijan voters has turned home. It will take months for negotiators from the NYK factions, as well as Nephara, Eura, Banija, and a whole host of other involved nations, including and especially the countries in the Pavlova region, to agree on parameters for talks. Which nations exactly can attend such talks. Where will these talks be held. Which people from the invited nations will attend the talks. Issues up for discussion. Peace is not easy- and all that will have to be hashed out. But still, first things achieved- a ceasefire that makes such pre-talks possible.

And as all that mostly takes place behind the scenes, with the Royal Family mostly taking charge of pre-talks, a look at the Banijan electoral calendar shows that we're due for an election soon. But first? A leadership election will take place in the People's Protection Movement, the largest party in the Lukiiko and the center-right senior coalition partner. They have been in power for the last decade, under the reign of Katikkiro Kobe Azizi. A popular Katikkiro, he has seen Banija through numerous sea changes in world politics, both advising the monarch and guiding Banija through turbulent times- some of his own making, and some completely outside of his control.

While he has overseen the latter stages of Banija's economic miracle, and helped attract plenty of foreign businesses to the country, there are three major moments that will define his term. The first? His pursuit of nuclear weapons, early in his first term for Banija, to try and have Banija 'take its place' among world powers. Long story short- the pursuit was successful. With the help of our allies from Siovanija & Teusland, we built those nuclear weapons. However, it took a disastrous turn, when the program was infiltrated(by still unknown persons to the general public), and nuclear weapons landed in Farfadillis. Azizi faced on the headstorms both at home and abroad after this- working successfully with Siovanija & Teusland to de-commission the program, and establishing the largely successful Banijan Volunteers for Farfadillis as a reparations program.

The other major event to mark his Premiership, of course, was the Foxchester Declaration- the breakaway of the Anaia Region. This included nearly half of then Atlantian Oceania, including major Banijan allies like Chromatika and Quebec. He worked with the Kabaka to steer Banija through it. While Banija could not land the headquarters of the reformed AO Defense organizations, Banija largely came out of that as part of a rising new power within Atlantian Oceania, alongside its major ally in Siovanija & Teusland. He got points at home for establishing unity within the Lukiiko, and making 'appropriate' decisions that both deepened ties with our regional neighbors, while protecting our major relationships in Anaia, and not alienating any other Anaia nations.

The third, of course, has been the breakout of civil war in Nyowani Kitara. With a majority of their population being ethnic Kitarans, who are from Banija, we obviously have taken a great interest in helping defeat the faltering government of the country. Kobe Azizi was quick to denounce the actions of Nafuna Akongo and her hostile, radically anti-Banijan government. Unfortunately, however, the war effort become protracted, and Nafuna Akongo, while she was going to fall, basically upheld by a joint Nepharan-Euran intervention that would have otherwise seen her government fall to the representatives of the people, the KFF.

But Kobe Azizi has announced his intention to not seek re-election, and to fill out his term as Katikkiro and not even run for re-election in the Lukiiko at all. "I am closing in on serving out two terms as the Katikkiro, and my third term as the leader of the People's Protection Movement." Azizi said in a surprising press conference. "Under my leadership and the PPM, we have seen incomes rise, strong GDP growth maintained, and the continuing building and strengthening of the middle class in this country. And in the face of economic modernization and growth, we have not seen Banija's values under threat- in fact, we have weathered those storms and seen them strengthened. After 15 years as a party leader, with 10 as Katikkiro, it is time for somebody else to take the face of the party, who can win their own mandate as Katikkiro in the upcoming elections."

Of course, his rather late announcement of his retirement surprised many observers- although not all. His predecessor, Kizza Makoni, was the latest Katikkiro to win election to a third consecutive term. But third terms are not good for Katikkiros- there has been no Banijan Katikkiro who has completed a full five year third term. Makoni's government fell apart, of course, after just two years into this third term over a very controversial handling of a crisis brought on by Farf refugees burning down a Mormon temple in their 'worship' services. Banijan political history is littered with people getting into their third terms and either having to resign, either from exhaustion, or failing to hold together the coalition.

It is not surprising Azizi wants to avoid that. He can retire on top. Instead of his final political moment losing a general election, or getting knifed by members of his own party, he retires on his own terms. And while he's doing so rather late in the game, that also makes sense. If he had said so far earlier on, there would have been pressure for a full-blown PPM leadership election, one that would see his reign come to an early end in his second term as a new party leader was elected. This way, there's no chance that his successor as party leader will take over his job as Katikkiro before the next scheduled general election.

It, of course, has set off a mad scramble on who will succeed Azizi. He did not endorse anybody in the contest. But Miremba Okello, the Mayor of Istria, is emerging as the early betting favorite. Who is she? She is the center-right Mayor of Banija's largest city- Istria, a city of nearly 3.5 million people. She's gotten plenty of praise for helping bring the Regional Transit Corporation back home, and making the city a business friendly destination, with the Istria Stock Exchange opening under her watch. She's mostly known internationally, however, as the city's Mayor during the successfully hosted XIV Summer Olympiad, half of which was in Istria. She's a national figure after that with an international persona.

She's never served in a national cabinet or shadow cabinet. She served three years in the Lukiiko before she ran for Mayor. She obviously doesn't currently hold a seat in the Lukiiko currently- but she'll have a safe Istria area seat to run in to easily get into the Lukiiko. Many prominent cabinet members have already declined to say they are running- with the Ministers of Justice, Finance, and Home Affairs all saying that they would not run for PPM leadership, theoretically clearing the path for the Mayor. If Miremba Okello becomes the PPM's candidate, then it will set up two women as the leaders of the largest parties in Banija- and a guarantee that, for the first time ever, Banija's Katikkiro will be a woman.

Change is coming! Kobe Azizi, exit stage left. Will Miremba Okello rise, unopposed, to become the leader and Katikkiro candidate for the People's Protection Movement?

That's just what's happening on the right. There is a serious re-alignment going on with the left side of the Banijan political spectrum, although we'll have to get to that in tomorrow's issue of this newspaper.
Former champion of quite a few things. Former President of even more things.

Coaching Staff
The current manager, Ousman Kakay, is in his 8th and final cycle as the team's manager. He has been wildly successful at the helm, leading the team to a bronze medal his first tournament(WBC 46), and a championship his second tournament(WBC 47), while getting to the quarterfinals in three straight classics before winning title #2 at WBC 51.

He is an old school manager, less into analytics and more into traditional baseball thinking. He believes in the strength of this team, which are his starting pitchers- he is much more likely to leave a starting pitcher in too long rather than pull them out too quickly. He also strongly rejects the idea of a "bullpen game."

There are a number of changes to the coaching staff from WBC 52, which finished with the team's title defense going out in a whimper, as they got swept in the Round of 16 by Hapilopper. is returning for this cycle.

Manager- Ousman Kakay. 72 years old. Starting managing the team at the beginning of WBC 46.
Bench Coach- Baluta Colley. 62 years old. Eighth Cycle on staff. Spent five classics as hitting coach, but when the bench coach, Isaac Oladipo, took the promotion with Super Llamaland, he moved up to the bench coach role.
Hitting Coach- Theodosia Osano. 57 years old. Third Cycle on Staff. First ever female on the coaching staff.
Pitching Coach- Odongo Ondiek. 41 years old. First Cycle on Staff. Like his predecessors, he likes big, tall, hard throwing pitchers. Minor league manager for the past few seasons in Banija, then spent one season as a college manager before joining the WBC staff.
1st base Coach- Elijah Anoko. 47 years old. Third Cycle on Staff. Previous manager of University of Moravica baseball.
3rd base Coach- Joel Oluoch. 48 years old. First Cycle on Staff. Very aggressive. He's a nephew of Ousman Kakay, via the manager's older sister.

WBBL = Western Banijan Baseball League, Banija's top-flight professional baseball leauge.
If they have never played in a WBC and this is their first cycle, they are italicized.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No(I have it all spelled out for you above! You can make in game substitutions for pinch runners/hitters or defensive subs as you see fit, but please follow the lineup as given above).
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes (I have it labeled game by game to prevent any confusion, so please follow! Make pitching changes of course during games as you please, but please do not have other starters coming into a game in relief)
Eject my players:Yes(My manager is a hothead, you can eject him too)
Godmod scoring events: No
RP injuries to my players: Yes (Please specify both the injury and the # of games that they will miss)
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes (Please specify both the injury and the # of games that they will miss)
Godmod other events: Yes (Whatever's fair game, but don't godmod scoring events, don't kill anyone w/o my permission, and no COVID/pandemics to effect Banija/any Banijans. Otherwise, have at it!)
Use DH at home: Yes
Other: When we are pitching, they induce a lot of ground balls. The strike out rates aren't terribly high for Banijan pitchers, but they play solid, fundamental defense, and they have strong arms all over the diamond. However, while Banija's rotation is one of the strongest in the multiverse, the bullpen leaves much to be desired, especially the middle relievers, who are well known to be the team's weakest link. For the knockout stages, we'll have one starter in the 4 man rotation available every game for an inning or two out of the bullpen. That is listed in the rotation. If those guys are brought in, it is for an absolute maximum of 35 pitches, however many outs that takes.

Sevendian roster for WBC52

What is a Sevendia?
Good question. Sevendia is a small, seven shaped country in Sonnel. At about 777,777 inhabitants, it isn’t a big or relevant nation. Sevendia rarely joins international sports, possibly because international sports don’t involve enough sevens to their liking. Everything is 7 in Sevendia. This is not an over exaggeration.

This is a meme puppet. Do whatever floats your boat. Kill ‘em, ‘slice em, dice ‘em, make them a farmer in remote Ko-oren, I don’t care. Go have some fun. (And no DH rule for this nation.)

Roster:

Coaching staff:
Seven-Seven Seventy-Seven (49)
The coach with the admittedly non-ideal name is responsible for all of the team. There are no other coaches. Due to the complexity of his name, he is mostly referenced as “91”. He is also the father of Sejal-Seven, the team’s shortstop. He previously got the team to 14 wins in WBC50, 13 wins in WBC52, and got the football team to 3rd place at the 7NC2, and the Sevens team to the final of the Bowl of the 6th Rugby Sevens World Cup, and probably more stuff I've forgotten. Yes, he coaches those teams as well.

Pitchers:
SP1 Sebastian-Seven Rottesven (36, L)
SP2 Sean-Seven Proven (35, R)
SP3 Seamus-Seven Muggeven (30, R)
SP4 Seth-Seven Zouven (40, R)
RP1 Serge-Seven Sjodeven (41, R)
RP2 Sefton-Seven Dragonven (30, R)
RP3 Selvin-Seven Iöderhven (27, R)
RP4 Sequan-Seven Goghven (23, R)
In Sevendia, pitchers are always male. None of them are any good. Just throw them around how it is convenient for you.

Field players:
C Sela-Seven Loveveven (30, R) (this is spelled correctly (all the names are, trust me))
1B Sera-Seven Poven (38, R)
2B Seira-Seven Hulven (24, L)
SS Sejal-Seven Seventy-seven (32, R)
3B Selinda-Seven Uhlmeven (18, R)
LF Seanna-Seven Joudlven (38, R)
CF Selena-Seven Gomeven (27, S)
RF Semina-Seven Ölddrawven (40, R)
Field players are always female in Sevendia. This is the batting lineup, pitcher at the end. If they are forced to play with a DH, the pitcher does that anyway.

Reserves:
C Selvia-Seven Ähven (26, L)
IF Sebrina-Seven Juuven (37, L)
OF Seanna-Seven Sulsven (26, R)
U Selestine-Seven Donewithven (55, R)

Things you probably should know

All (adult) people in Sevendia are seven foot. Always.
In every sentence, people currently being in Sevendia are required by law to use all the letters of the word seven (e, n, s, v) in every sentence they say.
The answer is always seven. No matter the question.
Everything that could theoretically be seven-shaped is seven-shaped.
Everything that can’t be seven-shaped is also seven-shaped.
All objects are required to have a 7 on them, including everything.
Seven.

The Stadium

Seven (77,777)
Building a stadium of those proportions was a very bad idea. For most games, the stadium isn’t remotely close to being full. Seven, located in the capital (Seven) will host all of the games. This stadium is also built in the shape of a seven, with the short side behind the outfield and the long side going along the side of the field, about up to third base.

Good luck, and I’m sorry.
Seven

SUPER-LLAMALAND TIGERS: WBC53 ROSTER

If WBC51 was two steps forwards for Isaac Oladipo's daring new Heartball project, then WBC52 was at least one step back, as the Tigers fell at the first hurdle to a Delaclava team that would suspend its participation in international baseball just weeks after knocking Heartball out. And while the IBS doesn't mean much at all, it was still disheartening to see Buck Fuchs' kids slump to a group stage exit (were they better when they were 11?). Add to that an early exit in the Esportivan Baseball Tournament, and you can see why the LBA is starting to sour on Heartball. Ahead of what could be a pivotal WBC53 in Tigers history (given that the Banijan's contract expires after this tournament), the stakes have never been higher.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: Yes, within reason (justify any discrepancies from the below lineups if possible)
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: TG for approval
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but I determine the severity
Godmod injuries to my players: TG for approval
Eject my players: TG for approval (Llamaneans really don’t get ejected often)
Godmod other events: TG for approval
Use DH at home: Yes

NICKNAMES: The Tigers (official), The Cubs (unofficial)
MANAGER: Isaac Oladipo (Banija), 60
RANK: 13
Home Stadium: Tyler Rocke Memorial (43,500) in downtown New Llama City, former host of the WBC30 finals, as well as a number of Baseball Club Championships matches. Home to the New Llama Wizards.

Hit a home run: Brünhild Gunnlaugson, Gabriel Acosta, Miranda Gray
Hit a double: Summer Huang, Miranda Gray, Brünhild Gunnlaugson
Get a clutch hit: Miranda Gray, Summer Huang, Trevor Mikkelson-Yao
Strike out: Derrick Armstrong, Lily Scutaro, Gabriel Acosta
Draw a walk: Miranda Gray, Noah Slater, Tyson Long
Steal a base: Summer Huang, Will Rentería, Lily Scutaro
Get caught stealing: Miles Villeneuve, Trevor Mikkelson-Yao, Summer Huang
Make a great defensive play: Summer Huang, Derrick Armstrong, Lily Scutaro, Trevor Mikkelson-Yao, Miranda Gray

Get Ejected / Start a Fight: literally nobody

Derrick ARMSTRONG, #1, 33, C-1B, S/R - Apple Valley Vipers
Emery WU, #12, 29, SS-2B-CF, S/S - Apple Valley Vipers
Miranda GRAY, #33, 30, 3B-LF-RF, R/R - Emerald City Greens
Summer HUANG, #6, 30, SS-2B-CF, S/S - New Llama Wizards
Gabriel ACOSTA, #10, 29, 1B-RF, L/L - Masmow Dragons (South Newlandia)

Noah SLATER, #16, 32, DH-C-1B, S/L - Vargas City Lions
Hansel ERIKSEN, #47, 20, C, S/R - Elephant Valley United (South Newlandia)
Miles VILLENEUVE, #18, 26, SS/2B, S/R - South Bryant Chariots
Rachel ESTRADA, #34, 25, UTIL, S/R - Vargas City Lions
Alana GONZALEZ, #93, 30, 3B/1B, R/R - Newport Owls (South Newlandia)

Starting catcher Derrick Armstrong takes after his ex-manager on defense, but unfortunately, nowhere else. He has a cannon for an arm, a natural instinct for framing pitches, a supernatural ability to calm down struggling pitchers, and a .224 career batting average in the LBL. While his power makes him a threat at the bottom of the lineup, his free-swinging tendencies make him one that’s easily dealt with. Corner infielder (and occasionally outfielder) Gabriel Acosta, expected to start at first, is one of the few traditional sluggers on the team. And while he also struggles with plate discipline, he distinguished himself from other potential starters by his defensive prowess and versatility. Emery Wu is a patient, doubles-hitting middle infielder with a sweet stroke and good range, who's really found some pop over the past few years. Summer Huang covers an incredible amount of ground in the field, whether she’s at shortstop, second base, or center-field. With a bat in her hands, she’s an incredibly effective - if overly aggressive - contact-hitter with doubles power and strong baserunning instincts. The Wizards recently shelled out a record-setting contract to her in free agency, infuriating the small-market South Bryant Chariots. Finally, Miranda Gray at third is one of the most disciplined hitters on the team, and an underrated defender at the hot corner - although her bland personality and small-market team make her less of a hot commodity than the other starters. Maybe a recent move to Emerald City will turn things around for her?

Off the bench, Noah Slater offers a stronger, more patient bat at the expense of lacking Armstrong’s finesse behind the plate - in fact, with Eriksen's emergence as a credible backup catcher at this level, he's unlikely to play catcher at all, instead DHing, backing up Acosta, and pinch-hitting. Do-it-all rookie Hansel Eriksen won South Newlandia's Rookie of the Year award after being taken first overall, immediately winning the fans over with his cannon arm and sweet stroke. Former Next Big Thing Miles Villeneuve, Summer Huang’s heir apparent at South Bryant, is an incredibly effective contact-hitter with enough plate discipline and power to get by, as well as a flashy - if not particularly effective - defender. Rachel Estrada is a jack-of-all-trades utilityman who, while not the greatest hitter who could’ve filled up the bench, is definitely the most versatile and the best teammate. Finally, Alana Gonzalez is a poor defender at third, which has seen her be forced into playing at first for her club, but her plate discipline and power make her a threat, and she's famously good at pinch-hitting.

Brünhild GUNNLAUGSON, #52, 26, LF/RF, L/L - City of Dinschria
Lily SCUTARO, #11, 32, CF, R/R - Victoriaville Venom (Cassadaigua)
Trevor MIKKELSON-YAO, #27, 26, RF/CF, L/L - Vargas City Lions

Will RENTERÍA, #19, 30, LF/CF/RF, S/R - Rüsselsheim Blue Sox (South Newlandia)
Tyson LONG, #9, 29, LF/RF, S/R - Nikcoro Suns

Brünhild Gunnlaugson can absolutely rake, with absolutely once-in-a-generation power reminiscent of her uncle Isak, a WBC40 champion with the Tigers. She's also incredibly quick on the basepaths and is solid enough in the corners, although her lack of discipline may cost her at this level. Lily Scutaro is less polished in the batters’ box than your average LBL outfielder, and strikes out frequently. However, she makes up for it with supernatural instincts in center-field, where she’s won a Gold Glove in all three of her LBL seasons, and on the basepaths. Scutaro is also a surprisingly powerful hitter for her five-seven height. In right field, WBC rookie Trevor Mikkelson-Yao is an elite five-tool talent. In his second LBL season with Vargas City, Mikkelson-Yao became the youngest player to join the 30-30 club (thirty home runs and thirty stolen bases) in the past twenty years. He’s a bit of a free swinger, and his decision-making in right-field betrays his cannon arm and range sometimes, but the athleticism and talent are clearly there on both sides of the ball.

Tyson Long, a former first overall draft pick, has staked his case to be the Llamanean slugging outfielder. His plate discipline, long at-bats, and ability to hit to the opposite field have always defied his young age, but his in-game power has really caught up to his raw power recently in a breakout campaign where slugged forty-one home runs. Has been rumored to be up to no good in Quebec, which may or may not be related to his power surge, but is increasingly finding himself the odd man out in a stacked outfield. Meanwhile, Will Rentería is more of a specialist. A slap-hitter by nature, Rentería's weak bat is compensated for by his blazing-fast speed and defensive prowess. He'll most commonly feature as a pinch-runner or defensive substitution, while Long is a more natural long-term replacement for the other outfielders.

Note: For the playoffs, Oladipo will use a four-man rotation, with Jørgensen available out of the bullpen.
Isaac COLÓN, #50, 31, R - Vargas City Lions
Since his international debut at IBS11, Isaac Colón has been hyped up as a generational ace pitcher with talent in spades. Has this potential been reached? Well...yes and no. Colón lights up the radar gun with a triple-digit fastball, and his screwball and changeup both have incredible movement. He’s really matured lately as well and has become a silent killer in high-leverage situations. However, repeated injuries have limited his LBL effectiveness, and unless he can lead a deep playoff run, he’ll always fall short of the Zhengs and Masorkas of the past.
Kai SÖDERSTROM, #20, 31, L - New Llama Wizards
The understated second starter of the New Llama Wizards surprised many by throwing eight shutout innings in the President’s Cup finals, but Söderstrom has been a quietly excellent pitcher for far longer than that. The lanky lefty has a low-90s two-seam fastball with a lot of movement, which he mixes expertly with a strong curveball and an inconsistently controlled, but occasionally devastating, changeup. A paragon of focus and calm on the mound, Söderstrom is very difficult to rattle, but he has had troubles with the third time through the order in the past.
Savanna WLADECKI, #25, 28, L - South Falls Athletics
Rookie of the Year three seasons ago, Wladecki originally wasn’t supposed to be in the majors at all after being taken in the fourth round. But injuries forced her into Derrierton’s rotation, and although her fastball never rose above ninety miles an hour, extremely high spin and pinpoint accuracy ensured that even a relatively pedestrian-seeming fastball-slider-changeup combination was able to stymie hitters for her first few seasons in the LBL.
Solveig JØRGENSEN, #28, 23, R - Xingcheng Renaissance
A young fireballer who loves to mix high fastballs that top out in the high nineties with sharp, late-breaking shuutos down in the zone. Also mixes in a comically slow, looping 12-6 curveball to great effect. The next steps will be to improve her control and gain a better strategic feel for the game, but the stuff is absolutely in place for Jørgensen to become a star.
Cedric WEI, #27, 31, L - New Llama Wizards
Wei’s fastball tops out at ninety-two miles an hour and lacks movement, but “The Surgeon” has made three All-Star teams off of his incredible array of breaking pitches. An expert at getting hitters to chase, Wei offers a late-breaking slider, a splitter, a curveball, and a changeup that will leave even the most skilled hitters confused, and has an innate sense of what pitch to choose to throw off the hitters’ timing and line of sight the most. While he’s vulnerable to the home run - usually hit when he’s trying to sneak a fastball by somebody - Wei is one of the most underrated pitchers in the LBL, even if he's ran into injury issues as of late.

Note: these are their recommended roles, but most of these are elite Llamanean relievers and can fill other roles pretty well. In the Llamanean baseball leagues, roles tend to be flexible, but Oladipo will be more rigid in his bullpen management. Oladipo has eschewed the new-age "relief ace" for a traditional, ninth-inning closer. These are all OOC role descriptions; ICly, there is no distinction between relievers. Specialty pitches are marked with one asterisk (or two asterisks for emphasis).

South Newlandian roster for the 53rd World Baseball Classic

Can we get back again? Five postseason trips in 5 years for the Elephants, but only one of them saw them into the Quarters - the run at home which ended in Tikariot in the final. The Classic after that, the Elephants failed to reach their Quarterfinal target. Now, with a more limited postseason into Banija, the Elephants deal with a tough group, but advancing to the Round of 16 should still be very much possible for this squad.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Please
Choose my lineup: as long as your changes are reasonable
Follow my pitching rotation: I’m going to state one. Please use that. Relievers, you’re way more free there.
Godmod scoring events: Yes!
RP injuries to my players: Yes
Godmod injuries to my players: TG or Discord in advance, please.
Eject my players: TG or Discord in advance, please; South Newlandians don’t get ejected a lot.
Godmod other events: TG or Discord in advance, please, but most likely yes
Use DH at home: Yes

Coaching staff

Sofia Rasmussen led the team to winning their WBC52 group, but was out of luck in a tough game 5 against Quintessence of Dust. After being fired just one season in with the Tigers, Rasmussen still has to prove that she can manage a national baseball team to be elite.

Manager/Head Coach: Sofia Rasmussen (SLL) (53)
Sofia Rasmussen. Many had suspected that she might be willing to take over the #3 ranked Elephants, and she was clearly the most decorated likely options. The Super-Llamanean has spent her playing days with the Svenssonfjord Dynamo and the New Llama Wizards, appeared in eight World Baseball Classics and won two of them. She later began a career in coaching, again with the Wizards and the Super-Llamanean team in World Baseball Classic 49. She managed to bring the unranked team all the way to the Round of 16. After that, she spent multiple seasons in the South Newlandian Baseball League, coaching the Masmow Dragons, and ultimately winning a championship with them. Rasmussen’s appointment falls in line with the South Newlandian and Super-Llamanean baseball organizations working closer together than ever, culminating in the LPB.

Hitting coach: Margo Jansen (SLL) (49)
In a rare move, Anthony Smith-Miller, former hitting coach of the Elephants, has joined the Tigers, while Jansen, former hitting coach of the Tigers, has joint Rasmussen. The two had previously worked together at the New Llama Wizards.

Pitching coach: Amanda Sjoberg (SLL) (66)
Sjoberg is another coach Rasmussen has worked together with before, namely at the 49th World Baseball Classic. Sjoberg will try her best to keep the South Newlandian pitching, which was the backbone of the success of the recent years, in shape.

Bench Coach: Bastian Scheller (44)
Scheller, long time bench coach of the Elephant Valley Homers, is going to replace Damian Bolton as Bench Coach. Scheller also has family in Super-Llamaland, and is known for his attention to detail.

Bullpen coach: Mohamed Felix (46)
In the very beginning of South Newlandian baseball, bullpens were a foreign concept. Over the years, the Elephants have adapted to playing actual baseball with relievers, at least for the most part. Felix is responsible for the relief pitchers, a crucial weak spot for South Newlandia in pretty much every tournament, so his squad will be important once more. Felix is also the only returning member of the WBC51 coaching squad.

1st Base Coach: Victor Matis (41)
Matis has previously been with the Kinjestad Peacocks.

3rd Base Coach: Karen Ahrmann (43)
Ahrmann has been the third base coach of the Sophie City Girls for years. She’s noted as being cautious on the base-paths; cautious, but save, and efficient. Outs by aggressive base-running are rare when Ahrmann’s signs are listened too.

Starting pitchers [* denotes best (not necessarily most likely) pitch]
Image

(SP1) Ryan Hunter (28, L) (Newport Dolphins)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer, Circle Changeup*, Cutter)
Hunter is perhaps most well-known for an incident with Midnight, the bear that used to play for Hampton Island. Since the bear charged the mound there, giving him a good scare before Midnight was shot with a tranquilizer gun. He hasn’t given out a single intentional walk since. He doesn’t really need to, either, having earned his spot as #1 on the South Newlandian team with good fastballs and an excellent changeup that just vanishes, seemingly. He’s also the best hitter among the pitchers, for when the team has to play without designated hitter; which, hopefully, rarely happens. After getting traded to the Dolphins, Hunter has been great in the LPB, including an All-Star appearance.

(SP2) Jay Kramer (26, R) (Masmow Dragons)
(Arsenal: 2-seamer, Changeup, Slider*)
Kramer, ace of the Masmow Dragons, is heading into his fourth World Baseball Classic. His career features multiple important run-ins with Super-Llamaland, some good, some bad – but he has played admirably in multiple seasons with Rasmussen coaching. Kramer, as one of the Dragons on the roster, surely has some extra trust from Rasmussen. Kramer usually tries to generate weak contact for the infield with a 2-seamer and a changeup that are similar, although not quite the same in velocity, and a slider that can be borderline unhittable. He’s not the very best at high leverage, but he has been working on that, including winning two games in the South Newlandian Final Series, both with 7 IP and fewer than three runs allowed.

(SP3) Jacob Conroy (30, R) (Elephant Valley United)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer*, Curveball, Changeup, Cutter)
Conroy has been the South Newlandian ace for six years. After a frankly ugly couple of seasons with the Admirals, he’s down to the #3 spot. Still, he has a fastball that can rival that of good relievers, and works a couple good pitches off of it. Like all South Newlandian pitchers, he isn’t held to any particular pitch count, but gets pulled whenever he doesn’t have his best stuff. Sometimes, that means he goes the entire game. Even though South Newlandia uses a DH, he occasionally has to hit here or there, and like all South Newlandian pitchers, he’s quite bad at it. Returning to Elephant Valley United has seen his play improve, but the #1 spot seems to be gone for good.

(SP4) Maike Bookmer (26, R) (Sophie City Monarchs)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer, Sinker*, Changeup, Slider)
Bookmer was the first female starting pitcher in South Newlandian World Baseball Classic history. In WBC52, she pitched well enough to earn the nod again. She’s been the young ace for the Monarchs, primarily using her sinker and changeup to disrupt the timing of hitters, with a deadly four-seamer in the mix. She generates lots of weak contact, and thrives off of that, and has earned an All-Star appearance in the process.

(SP5) Ben Gonzalo (24, R) (Newport Dolphins)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer*, Slider, Curveball)
Gonzalo is going into his third Classic, and it's well earned. His combination complements itself well; throwing the 4-seamer most of the time with a phenomenal curveball that completely disappears from where it was initially going. If he has to bat, he swings for the fences every single ball thrown to him, which isn’t the ideal strategy, but could go well if he ends up hitting one.

Bullpen

(Closer) Barnaby Butt (29, L) (Masmow Dragons)
(Arsenal: 2-seamer*, Circle Changeup, Slider)
Real pitching habits only evlved slowly with the Elephants, but they will make another step towards a usual bullpen this Classic. With Butt, the best among the relievers, the team has found a capable left handed pitcher to close out games with. Watch out for that Slider.

(Setup) Dhruv Webber (22, L) (Malidridad Mariners)
(Arsenal: 2-seamer, Cutter, Changeup*, Curveball)
The young Mariner is a control artist – he doesn’t have blow-you-away stuff, but the location of those pitches is great. Webber's rise has been impressive - he's been great in the last two Slams and the last Classic, very impressive at his age.

(Primary1) Abby Conrad (24, R) (Sophie City Monarchs)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer*, Cutter, Curveball, Slider)
Conrad was the first female player in the bullpen a couple of Classics ago, and she made it worth it with excellent perfomances. She definitely deserves this role, featuring a strong fastball and a great Curveball/Slider combination. She's also been an All-Star last season.

(Primary2) Gostaf Sjabard (27, L) (Rüsselsheim Blue Sox)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer, Changeup, Curveball*, Cutter)
Although Sjabard uses a similar set of pitches as Conrad, the two play very differently. For one, Sjabard is a lefty, and aside from that, he has a changeup he likes to use. His masterpiece, though, is a fantastic curveball that is very deceptive thanks to the amount of movement is creates.

(Mop-up1) Sally Rivera (23, R) (Sophie City Monarchs)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer*, Slider, Changeup, Curveball)
Rivera has been great from the pen, having leant a lot from her teammate Emily Innis – just like Bookmer did, clearly – and earnt her spot with a fast 4-seamer and nice breaking pitches.

(Mop-up2) Darlene Le (24, R) (Vargas City Lions)
(Arsenal: 4-seamer, Changeup, Slider, Splitter*)
Le is making her international debut. The young pitcher was drafted seventh overall after finishing out college, and has joined the Vargas City Lions, where she has been pretty good. Her strikeout pitch is her splitter, a rare pitch to throw in today's game, but Le makes it work for her.

Fielders (starters) (fielding is based on the position here, while everything else is not)
Image

(1B) Adam King (29, R) (Elephant Valley Homers)
(Speed: Average | Power: Very High | Contact: High | Fielding: Good)
King is definitely the biggest power threat on this team. He is definitely capable of hitting quite a few dingers without warning, but can approach a cold stretch just as quick. He can hit for contact too, if he has to, but is mostly mediocre at fielding or running fast.

(2B) Malika Bains (25, R) (Sophie City Monarchs)
(Speed: Very High | Power: Average | Contact: High | Fielding: Very Good)
Bains has previously appeared in the International Baseball Slam, and produced admirable results. She’s extremely fast, hits for average with ease, and on top of that, has won multiple fielding awards at second base. She’s the player that can replace Igor White, the player that has started here for 4 Classics, and she proved it last Classic and by being an all-star and gold glover last season.

(3B) Hugo Brock (23, R) (Malidridad Mariners)
(Speed: Average | Power: Low | Contact: Average | Fielding: Good)
Brock is a pretty solid player at third, but nothing spectacular. He can field, he’s hitting decently, but overall, he’s not exactly the best player on this team. South Newlandia just doesn’t have many talents at third, but Brock is looking to gain the experience to become an elite player. Brock was an all-star last season, but at least partially only to ensure the Mariners representation.

(SS) David Drum (27, R) (Newport Dolphins)
(Speed: High | Power: High | Contact: High | Fielding: Good)
Drum has established himself as an elite shortstop, being both a scoring threat and an excellent fielder. He does have a tendency to produce trouble in the clubhouse, though, and isnt regarded as the best team player. Despite this, having basically no weaknesses makes him a valuable starter for the Elephants.

(LF) Daryl Dunlop (29, R) (Masmow Dragons)
(Speed: Very High | Power: Average | Contact: Very High | Fielding: Good)
Dunlop, another player from the Dragons, is the fastest guy on the team, and the only one to go for the steal often. He’s great at getting on base too, and his fielding skills are improving too. Going for steals of course leads to getting thrown out occasionally, too. He also was an All-Star last season.

(CF) Shawn Zimmerman (25, S) (Elephant Valley Homers)
(Speed: High | Power: Very High | Contact: Very High | Fielding: Very Good)
Zimmerman is one of the biggest talents playing for the Elephants. The five-tool player excels at everything, and started for this team at just 18 years old. Now, five years later, he is phenomenal at getting contact, and goes for the deep ball less often then he used too. Shawn’s still got that one, too, as he proved in the WBC51 final series, hitting a bomb to walk of a game against Banija. He’ll end up on base a lot, and has the speed to get more. That also allows him to cover lots of ground defensively, making him, coupled with a strong arm, one of the best South Newlandian players. He also won a silver slugger last season.

(RF) Fabio Ventura (31, L) (Elephant Valley Homers)
(Speed: High | Power: High| Contact: High | Fielding: Bad)
Ventura has been the offensive star on this team since the beginning. Like most South Newlandian hitters, he goes for contact a lot, and is very good at it. He’s got speed, and although he’s not a great fielder, it’s hard to imagine he’ll ever get replaced on this team.

(C) Brad Moore (26, R) (Newport Dolphins)
(Speed: Low | Power: High | Contact: Average | Fielding: Very Good)
Moore has been with the Dolphins the last few years, allowing him to generate a great connection to his teammate Gonzalo. He’s a solid enough catcher, and he’s up to the task of catching for this team. He’s got a little power, but otherwise, he’s not a great offensive bat; he’s very good at throwing out base-stealers, though.

(DH (RF)) Mike Larsen (26, L) (Newport Dolphins)
(Speed: Very High | Power: Average | Contact: Very High | Fielding: Average)
Larsen, the Designated Hitter for the team, is another Contact hitter, usually not going for power. He’s decently fast, and has among the best plate discipline of the squad. Despite that, he rarely strikes out. He plays in Right Field for the Dolphins, and could be the player to eventually replace Ventura there. He also won a silver slugger the prior season.

Bench:

(C) Hugh Marquez (26, R) (New Llama Cyclones (SLL))
(Speed: Average | Power: Low | Contact: Average | Fielding: Very Good)
Marquez is a decent option to play catcher. The former Rhino has blossomed with the Cyclones after being selected 19th in the redraft.

(IF (1B)) Nicolas Perez (23, R) (Xingcheng Renaissance)
(Speed: High | Power: Very High | Contact: Very High | Fielding: Average)
Perez is one of the biggest talents for South Newlandia, a true five tool player, who’ll break into the roster sooner than later. He’s also the most likely pinch hitter.

(IF (SS)) Jack Goodson (22, R) (Malidridad Mariners)
(Speed: High | Power: Average | Contact: Very High | Fielding: Good)
Goodson, the first-overall pick from a few years ago, is finally braking into the WBC roster. Getting past Drum will be difficult.

(OF (RF)) Emil Hurley (21, L) (Peninsulara Kingfishers)
(Speed: Very High | Power: High | Contact: High | Fielding: Average)
Hurley is decently fast, and the most likely option to be pinch running. He's been an all-star and silver slugger for the Kingfishers.

(OF (RF)) Gary Promises (22, R) (Newport Owls)
(Speed: Low | Power: Very High | Contact: Low | Fielding: Good)
Promises is a really, really strong guy. He goes for the deep ball, and that’s about all he does. He’s the other good option for pinch hitting.

Lineups:

With DH:
1. Mike Larsen
2. Daryl Dunlop
3. Shawn Zimmerman
4. Adam King
5. David Drum
6. Malika Bains
7. Fabio Ventura
8. Hugo Brock
9. Brad Moore

Without DH:
1. Daryl Dunlop
2. Shawn Zimmerman
3. David Drum
4. Adam King
5. Malika Bains
6. Fabio Ventura
7. Hugo Brock
8. Brad Moore
9. Pitcher

Stadium

Elephant Stadium (15,000)
The biggest South Newlandian baseball stadium is located in the relative South of the capital city Elephant Valley. The stadium was upgraded after the 48th WBC, and is now able to host 15000 people. All fifteen home games of WBC48 were played here, and the unranked South Newlandia won twelve of them, including all of the first ten home games. The upgraded stadium also featured one match series in the IBS11 and the WBC49, and knockout games in IBS12, including a semi-final; and of course, multiple play-off series at WBC52, including the South Newlandian semi-final win over Sarzonia. Domestically, this is the home of the Elephant Valley Homers.

And so, the national trophy cabinet of Quintessence of Dust grows a little larger. Joining the dusty silverware celebrating victories in the inaugural Alpine Skiing World Cup, the first Rugby Six Nations, the Rainbow Rock Curling Bonspiel, the 2nd U-21 Keisler Cup, and the 8th Handball World Cup, will be the 5th Londinium Challenge Invitational trophy. Valanora or Cassadaigua’s haul, it ain’t, but the team were still grateful to be provided an opportunity to play by the Nova Anglican authorities, and as warm-ups go, a perfect 5 – 0 record isn’t bad. Especially with most of the regular starting rotation and the team’s two best hitters missing. But the bigger opportunity isn’t really adding to the assorted ancient tin cups that President Kivistö probably has to buff up for state dinners and otherwise keeps in her attic along with some moth-eaten old blankets and broken tennis rackets, but getting a first look at the team. What can we learn from the team that competed in Nova Anglicana, and what does that mean for the team that will now begin their new assignment of … competing in Nova Anglicana, again?

1. Jan Scherer is not ready to be a starter. But is Waismann?

Giving the team’s long reliever a chance at starting was a worthwhile gamble by Jiang, but not one that paid off. Scherer might complain that the hard pitch counts limited him to throwing less than a complete game across two starts, but in those 8 innings thrown he gave up 10 hits and an ERA of 5.63. His only real complaint about being moved back into the arm barn is that Niklas Waismann didn’t do much better in his start (8 hits and 3 earned runs to just 2 strikeouts in 5 IP). But Waismann is younger, clocks faster on the speed gun, and is seen as having a bigger upside. In any case, Scherer may be given some spot starting opportunities; Quodite baseball has long detested the formulaic nature of modern WBC playoffs which would lead to repeat scheduling of starters in a 5-person rotation, so Jiang will seek to mix things up with some spot starts for Scherer, probably as an opener with Nathaniel Drey or Bjarte Amundsen already warming up.

Fortunately for Jiang, in a roster that has seen high turnover among position players, he has the bulk of his starting rotation returning. Kalberg and Sakaguchi – both now playing in the Llamaphant Baseball League – will join Martin and Kawakumi, who are now the only two players left from the WBC50 roster. There’s significant churn in the arm barn, too, though Kaspar Wahl, who missed the LCI through injury, rejoins the roster, taking the place of Pierre Blanc, who somehow found time in his limited opportunities to amass an ERA of 82. For Jiang, the strategy is clearly to put most of his egg-substitute-vegan-snacks in the basket of backing his starters, and there are signs the low pitch counts Quodite pitchers have operated under in recent WBCs may be a thing of the past now.

2. Where the white multiracial women at?

With just three women, this is officially the least diverse team Quintessence of Dust has ever fielded in terms of gender. Naoko Hisakawa has retired and Isabella Gennarelli’s form faded away; Kaori Yutani retains her place along with Kawakami, while WBC52 batgirl Zuzana Janečková continues the long tradition that dates all the way back to the likes of Huang Li, Emily Sanderson, and Sakiko Wakabayashi in earning a place on the next roster. And that’s it. Over 40 men will have represented Quintessence of Dust over the last four years, and just five women. For a country that once fielded an all-woman side, it’s been quite a transition.

One factor has been the decline of female pitching. Since readmission, only Kawakami and Alexis Lacroix have thrown a single pitch as Quodite women. And both of them are submarine pitchers. Nor do any Quodite women currently catch in Minimal League Baseball, LBL, or the HBA. On the position player side, the renewed focus on TTO baseball has seen big power hitters prioritized. Not that Sanderson and Kivistö didn’t hit some dingers in their day. Quintessence of Dust is a strikingly egalitarian society in terms of economic opportunity, health outcomes, and educational and social factors. Perhaps women have simply found better things to do with their time than spend three months chasing a ball around a field.

3. Centrefield remains a problem.

Centrefield has been the Things’ weakest position since readmission. Katenka Andreeva batted well but was inconsistent in the field and didn’t seem respected by the Things’ management, with her slap hitting at style at odds with the coaches measuring launch angles on every stroke and Isabella Gennarelli acquired the unfortunate nickname of “Gennarelli Awful” despite the occasional bit of spark on the basepaths, onto which she didn’t get nearly often enough. So it was exciting to go to the LCI with two new prospects, Janečková and Jay Stevens. And a bit less exciting that they returned home with exactly same number of hits as when they’d left. An 0–19 showing wasn’t ideal. Jiang will probably go with Janečková as the better fielder, but lots of questions over the place, and Stevens likely to get his chances, especially as a switch hitter.

Another solution would be to shift Tom Brøndum over to centre, something the Things have been curiously unwilling to do. An excellent fielder, he has the range and arm for centre, even if he mostly plies his domestic trade in right. Pushing him over would allow Rémy Weber a chance in right; he’s already being described as the best switch power hitter Quintessence of Dust has produced, and launched one enormous pinch-hit home run in the LCI, where he was otherwise given little opportunity. With team co-captain Luka Chevalier a virtual lock in left now, there’s no other way of getting him into the lineup. Brøndum was in hot form during the LCI, hitting over .500 with a team-leading 3 home runs; he played well in the last WBC. It may simply be he doesn’t enjoy playing centre. But Jiang won’t have patience for long if whoever does enjoy playing there allows the hitless streak to continue into the 20s.

4. There was no point taking Ty Knight to the LCI.

Ty Knight did OK at the LCI, hitting .263 with a .333 OBP, though striking out three times in the final game meant his time with the national time ended on a down note. But why was he even there? He has no realistic chance of seeing much playing time in WBC53 if Sigurkarl Borgþórsson is fit. Borgþórsson, who led the team in doubles and slugging last tournament, regularly finding (though struggling to clear) the fences, is a much stronger hitter. He has poor lefty splits, but Knight is also left-handed, so there’s no platoon advantage. Knight is quicker, which isn’t a big enough factor for Wally the Win Expectancy Worm to even roll over in his sleep, much less get out of bed; he’s also a better fielder, but that offers little premium at first base, a position that anyway any of the utility infielders can cover.

The main knock on Borgþórsson is his splits. Last tournament, Jiang’s heavy use of platoons began to wear; it seemed to affect Akerström, who struggled for consistency, too. He’s now retired and Lingxin Dai, who gained multiple chances, thanks largely to playing an abnormally high number of left-handed starting pitchers, emerged as the team’s offensive star anyway. He could play first – at third, his defence will be exposed. And there are then other options at third. Yet still, none of that offers any way for Knight to get into the team. Not a major power threat, his use as a pinch-hitter would be pretty limited. In short, it’s no surprise he hasn’t made the final 28. The team would probably have been better off using the LCI to blood a right-handed hitter. At least he gets a winner’s medal.

5. Maas Pheng Yang hit himself into contention. Dong-Hyeon Kok fielded himself out of it.

Maas Pheng Yang was not part of Jiang’s longlist for WBC53; he was included in the LCI only because Lingxin Dai decided to sit it out for family reasons. He ended up hitting a clutch homer, leading the team in doubles, and being awarded the tournament MVP for his consistent play. There’s no way Jiang could leave him out now. Unlike Dong-Hyeon Kok, whose place he has basically taken, he’s not a utility player and won’t play the middle infield. So at first glance, he’ll be starting on the bench. But as mentioned above, if Jiang decides to return to a platoon at first, Dai could move to the other side of the diamond and that would open up a space for Yang.

Kok might feel aggrieved. He hit .333 through the LCI, while Yutani had to wait until the last game to break her hitless stroke, with an OBP of just .133. Her superior defence, though, means it was never really a contest who would start at second base; instead, Kok was competing with a man who wasn’t in Nova Anglicana, Teijo Watanabe. With Jiro Tsukamoto retiring, Watanabe had a chance at a reprieve for his frankly terrible WBC52 as the team’s reserve infielder, and Kok evidently didn’t do enough with his glove to prove himself worthy of taking over.

Conclusion

The Things will head to WBC53 missing many of the big names that got them to the WBC52 final. Half the arm barn, including experienced players like Justin Isaacson and Cody Young, are missing. Bigger gaps are found on offence: Ben Wilson, Joakim Stensrud, and Naoko Hisakawa are three huge losses. Chevalier, Long, and Theriault have much to do to make up for their absences. But the bulk of the starting rotation is the same, including the name at the top, Jack Martin, who’s been leading the team out for more than a decade now.

Kohnhead National Baseball Team
Nation Name: The Galactic Empire of Kohnhead
Abbreviated Name: Kohnhead
Nation Trigramme: KHD
Nickname: The Pandas(The only time it's not The Brains)
Denoym: Kohnheadian
Overall Record: 98-66
Rank: 15

Info: Kohnhead did okay at their first WBC in Newmanistan ending with a 14-16 record in the group stage good enough to finish in 5th of their 6 team group which was obviously not enough to qualify for the next round. They came into the 50th World Baseball Classic and did a lot better going 20-10 and finishing as the surprising 15 seed following the Group Stage. This however only got us into the Round of 32 given the extra field size and so we took on Tikariot in a best of five series that we just barely lost 3-2 to send us home. Baseball was the first of the major four sports where Kohnhead has qualified for the next round with gridiron being the only other one. Two seasons Kohnhead went 20-10 once again in the Group Stage although it was only good enough for 3rd in a group containing Banija and South Newlandia whom would play in the finals before a run to the quartefinals that included a surprising sweep of reigning champs Cassadaigua. In Chromatika, Kohnhead went 21-9 in the Group Stage before doing things like sweeping Nova Anglicana in the Round of 16 before falling in the quarters once again in heartbreaking fashion against Zwangzug with a blown 4-0 lead late in game 5.

Coaching Staff:
Head Coach: Clay Glass, 53 years old (M)
Glass will guide this team, although he was a surprise pick for the job. He rose through the ranks having first been a pitching coach before being named to the team. Glass has done a fantastic job so far and is beloved by the players.

Hitting Coach: Phoebe Chapman, 56 years old (F)

Pitching Coach: Belle Parry, 72 years old (F)

Bench Coach: Dewey Horn, 76 years old (M)

Starting Pitchers
SP-RH Ralphie Bloggs, 28 years old (M) - Emerald City Greens (Super Llamaland)
Bloggs is the team's ace and is one of the best players. He has five pitches but really only uses four of them his 4 seam, slider, change, and curve. His speed tops out a 95 mph normally around 93 but it's his control and movement that got him in this position. Bloggs can normally go 7 innings into games but will reach the full 9 on occasion. Bloggs recently joined the South Newlandia-Super Llamaland super league becoming the first Kohnheadian to join a team from Super Llamaland as his prime continues.

SP-RH Fletcher Crouch, 23 years old (M) - Rüsselsheim Blue Sox (South Newlandia)
Crouch is a very different type of player than Bloggs and that's why he's our number 2, although he most definitely has the upside of a true number 1. Crouch has our best arm capping out a 98-99 mph at his best with a slow windup, but he can be very inaccurate and needs to develop a true secondary pitch whether it be a curve or a slider. Crouch has joined Hahn in South Newlandia as he signs for the Rüsselsheim Blue Sox alongside Hahn.

SP-RH Allan Fox, 24 years old (M)
Fox is a flamethrower with accuracy and stamina issues. While he can get up to 97 mph on his pitches faster than most players on the team his accuracy issues are well documented. He is a streaky player so he will follow a shutout with a 7 runs in 2 innings performance. Fox had a very good IBS which why he got promoted to the National Team for the 50th WBC and he has played himself into the third spot in the rotation surpassing Mclellan.

SP-LH Sharon Mclellan, 33 years old (F)
Mclellan is a low upside southpaw pitcher on the wrong side of 30 at this point that is an okay at best fourth pitcher in the rotation, however before long we could easily see her supplanted by Duncan Park if he outperforms her. With Mclellan you know you're going to get 6 solid innings where they score 3 or 4 runs as she tries to navigate with a slowing fastball, slider, and change.

SP-LH Duncan Park, 20 years old (M)
Park was the ace of the IBS team that did really well in Banija and replaced Murrary Marshall in the rotation. Park will be the second southpaw on the team and the streakiest pitcher although he showed some good composure at the IBS. When he's on he could be the future ace of the team, if he's off the bullpen will have a lot of work to do. Park becomes the second starting pitcher promoted from the U-21 team that has shined in recent years.

RP-RH Kara Conroy, 22 years old (F)
Conroy was the best pitcher on the U-21 team over in Banija and was a reliable reliever. She replaces Austin Sutton in the bullpen as he has elected to retire and switch to a full time coach and could be a future manager of the National Team. Conroy has a lot of stamina but will mostly be used in the earlier innings if Millington or Arroyo need rest but won't see many innings during this WBC.

RP-RH Jasmine Millington, 28 years old (F)
Jasmine Millington is the reliever called upon to go 2-3 innings if the starter can't make it far into the game and we need someone to get us through to the 7th. Millington in addition has a pretty good fastball but is most known for her screwball which is not a normal or usual pitch.

RP-LH Nela Fowler, 31 years old (F)
Fowler is really only on this team because she is a left-handed specialist and can be counted on to pitch to lefties on the other team, something none of our other pitchers can do. Fowler is really only brought in if they have a stretch of good lefties and while she will pitch against right handed batters it normally doesn't turn out well.

RP-RH Scarlett Arroyo, 23 years old (F)
Arroyo is a developing reliever who will be pitched most of the time in the 7th inning if Millington needs rest. Arroyo has the same skillset as Millington (without the screw) except that Millington can go further than Arroyo. Arroyo throws decently hard and gets good movement on her pitches and is of course only 21.

Set up Melissa Berger, 25 years old (F)
Berger is the set up pitcher for the 8th inning. She's okay with no real fastball but she makes up for it with a plethora of other pitches in her arsenal. Maddy Lane is on a short leash as the closer and Berger might have to move down there if Lane performs poorly.

CP Maddy Lane, 22 years old (F)
Lane was a very surprising call up to the National Team three Classics ago and what's even more surprising is that she's our starting closer. Lane has talent there's no question about that but she struggled in the 12th IBS and was handed this job. Yes, Lane is the closer of the future it's just I don't quite feel she is ready for this role and if she struggles Berger will have to move down to become the closer, overall it was a mixed bag at her first Classic and she outperformed expectations while also falshing her upside.

Starting Lineup
1. CF-RH Lucca Hahn, 27 years old (M) - Rüsselsheim Blue Sox (South Newlandia)
Hahn is your stereotypical leadoff center fielder and is probably the best player on the team. He has the speed, plate vision, and on base ability a leadoff hitter needs to have. Despite this he also has above average power with great contact making him a complete asset. His biggest question mark is most definitely his arm speed but he has excellent range out in the field and that's why he has gone to South Newlandia to play professionally.

2. SS-LH Jessie Cherry, 30 years old (M)
Cherry has good speed in the 2 spot as well as nice contact and the power to go deep every so often. However his fielding skills are a bit below average for a shortstop. Despite this he has the best hands in the infield except for maybe Chiara Thompson who is on the bench until she improves her hitting. This is because our infield is not very good at fielding and we will commit errors a lot more frequently than most teams.

3. 1B-LH Monica Ratliff, 31 years old (F)
Ratliff is a power hitter plain and simple who will not draw walks and is an okay fielder at best with surprising speed consider her batting order and skillset. Ratliff and Vlad Burch will lead the team in homers and rbis and it won't be close. She is however a very hit or miss type of player as most like her are.

DH-RH Callie Dudley, 23 years old (F)
Dudley is an extremely good hitter who also hits for power in the 4 spot but is highly slow and cannot field very well. However her power in the lineup will be essential so she plays out in right field when the pitcher has to hit. She is a highly regarded prospect and was the starting DH for the first time on the National Team during the 51st Classic.

5. 3B-RH Cecilia Dickerson, 25 years old (F)
Dickerson is our 5 hitter and has almost no power which is interesting for her role. Dickerson hits in this spot because of her speed, ability to draw walks, and batting average which is very high. Dickerson's greatest strength is her ability to easily hit it the other way meaning you cannot switch on her or she will hurt you.

6. RF-SH Stuart Dorsey, 28 years old (M)
Dorsey has a good amount of power as the starting RF and is a decent fielder overall, he is just a solid well rounded player in the six spot who brings good hitting and good fielding to the table. In addition Dorsey is only entering his prime, the big knock on him is he's a little injury prone. Dorsey will not play when we play without the DH with Dudley shifting into right field because we want her in the batting lineup.

7. C-RH Sandra Craft, 32 years old (F)
Craft is the catcher and is most known for her defensive prescence compared to her hitting abilities. Sandra has a very good arm and her pop time is off the charts as she stops almost everyone from stealing second. She is also good on bad pitches blocking almost all of them. At the plate it's a different story as she struggles immenslely.

8. 2B-RH Artur Wagstaff, 26 years old (M)
Wagstaff is the same story as Sandra Craft, a better fielder than hitter although he is worse at both of them than Craft. Wagstaff doesn't have the best glove but his throws are powerful and accurate. At the plate Wagstaff can draw walks, maybe, sometimes go yard (rarely) and the hope was for Chiara Thompson to replace him. That clearly hasn't happened as she fails to take the next step hitting wise.

9. LF-RH Alvin Clayton, 23 years old (M)
Alvin Clayton is the third player from the U-21 team to be promoted to the National Team and their starting center fielder and leadoff hitter is almost a carbon copy of Lucca Hahn. However he still needs some time to adjust to the next level at the plate and isn't as fast as Hahn so he will be put into left field sending Dorsey to right field.

Lineup without DH
1. CF Lucca Hahn
2. SS Jessie Cherry
3. 1B Monica Ratliff
4. RF Callie Dudley
5. 3B Cecilia Dickerson
6. C Sandra Craft
7. 2B Artur Wagstaff
8. RF Alvin Clayton
9. Pitcher

Bench
IF-RH Chiara Thompson, 22 years old (F)
As eluded to before, Thompson has all the neessary tools to play in the field as the shortstop but has failed to show she can be even close to trusted at the plate. However Thompson is still young at 21 years old so she will get her shot at sometime in the future.

OF-LH Adrianna Holden, 35 years old (F)
Holden is not a promising option off the bench and will be replaced soon considering she couldn't win a job from Helena Mata.

1B-RH Leon Mcintrye, 32 years old (M)
Mcintrye is known for his power but struggles in all other aspects and thus is left on the bench.

C-RH Prince Santana, 245years old (M)
Santana is the backup catcher and he doesn't offer much. As was discussed with the U-21 team the state of the catcher is not good in Kohnhead and it would be awful if Craft got injured.

CF-SH Esme Mohamed, 35 years old (F)
Mohamed is just another outfielder who at this point is last on the roster as the 26th person and probably won't ever see the field during the tournament as the coaching staff prefers Callie Dudley.

DH-RH Vlad Burch, 37 years old (M)
Burch as mentioned above is just another power hitter who used to hit in the four slot. Burch actually was a very good fielder in his early and later 20s but with age and injuries he has turned into a slow, prodding power hitter with his plate vision all but dissolved. However Burch will still send a lot deep as he swings the bat so well, he will be used as a bench option this classic as his time dwindles on the team.

BROOKSTATION NATIONAL BASEBALL TEAM

BASEBALL IN BROOKSTATION

Baseball isn't a popular sport in Brookstation as it is overshadowed by it's counterpart, cricket. Baseball finds a lot of popularity among certain college and university campuses, just like Rugby. In the past few years, arrangement for the development of the baseball has been made in Brookstation. Brookstation's first baseball tournament was the 15th International Baseball Slam, where they managed to reach the final 6 before being knocked out by Chromatika, who in turn was knocked out by Abanhfleft. Funilly enough, all three teams find themselves in the same group in the 53rd World Baseball Classic. Getting a top position in the group will be quite difficult for Brookstation.

Posted on the In Brief section of the GS SuperSports+ website.

    Familiar foes await Choughs

While it may not yet rank among the most iconic of sporting rivalries, there was a certain grim murmur when Cassadaigua and Hannasea were drawn into the same group for WBC53: so we meet again. The Fillies and Choughs have now played each other in each of the last 3 WBC group stages.

The first meeting, in WBC51, came on Hannasean soil, and was an unhappy affair for the host Choughs, with the Dagans taking a 3 – 0 sweep. The first game saw Wyatt Gardner lose control completely, giving up 5 walks, a run-scoring wild pitch, and a hit by pitch to score 4 runs before being yanked before the 4th inning was up. Not that his replacements did much better: Charles Anderson and Jasper Walsh gave up five consecutive hits as the Dagans piled on 6 runs in the 8th, with pinch-hitter Sarah Peluso hitting two singles in that single inning. The Dagans never needed to look back after Tori Fullerton’s early 2-RBI homer in the 1st inning of game 2, while it was Meghan Thompson and Macy Hamel who did the damage in game 3 to come back from 0–3 down.

The return leg went the other way, the Choughs inflicting a surprise sweep on their hosts, though as it was a thoroughly dead rubber, with the Dagans already guaranteed first place in the group and Hannasea already eliminated, there was a suspicion that Cassadaigua weren’t really playing to their best, resting their starters and using reserve pitchers. All the same, a quality pitching performance from Kian Bell to strike out 8 Dagans and a 2-RBI homer from Yael Cochran took Game 1; a clutch pinch-hit 9th inning homer from Zach Walker backed up a 9K performance on the mound from Harrison Byrne in Game 2; and a close Game 3 was swung Hannasea’s way through RBI doubles from Jonah Porter and Aaron Green.

The teams met again in WBC52; once more, their series were the last of the group stage. Hannasea took the first series 2–1 on home soil to set up an unexpected lead over the Dagans, both teams behind the Super-Llamaland Tigers in the standings at the halfway mark. Familiar foes Rachel Kessler (2–4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 RBI) and Sarah Peluso (now a starter, with another HR) dismantled Jimmy Morris in Game 1. But the Choughs struck back. Tied 4–4 at the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, Katie Stephens dropped a routine flyball to allow Jesse Lowe to escape and give Aaron Green a chance to drive in the winning run in Game 2. In Game 3, closer Becca Fischer blew another 4–4 tie to load the bases; Zach Walker scored on a Jay Wagner 2-out single and Tom DiVicenzo then burned through the 9th inning throwing nothing but strikes.

Back on home soil, Cassadaigua restored order with a sweep. Game 1 saw an injury-weakened Hannasean side missing their entire starting outfield further lose two shortstops in the space of 9 innings as Joe Mills hurt his arm diving for a ball and Alex Hamilton suffered a broken leg when Ashley McKnight broke up a double play ball with a hard slide. By that stage the game was already gone: Will Matthews allowed 5 hits, 3 walks, and 5 runs in his first inning, and reliever William Whitworth a further 2 runs on 3 hits, a balk and a wild pitch in his first. Game 2 was an epic 17 inning affair won for the Fillies on a walk-off, Natalia Coleman scoring on an Adriana Vazquez single off Benjamin Palmer. That game, though, was a memorable one for the Choughs, as a Tigers win over Hebitaka guaranteed the Choughs a victory: thus, after losing in 17 innings, it was the Hannaseans who were celebrating! In Game 3, Katie Stephens scored all 3 runs (on a sac fly and an RBI hit by McKnight, and a solo homer of her own making) to cancel out Sam Pearce’s 2-RBI shot.

So far, then, things lie in the Dagans’ favor, with 7 games to the Hannasean 5, and a better run differential. Each team has won one series at home and one away; the Fillies have swept the Choughs twice and been swept once. Among Hannasean players, only Aaron Green has played in every game; he and Mathis, who was called up during the tournament, are the only returning starters from WBC51, while Ethan Harman, Zach Walker and Jesse Lowe were all on the bench for that competition. Cassadaigua has seen much less turnover, and many of those who have played well against Hannasea in the past, including Stephens, Peluso, Kennedy and McKnight, are still on the team.

This time, though, instead of waiting for the end of the group stage, the match-up will be the one to kick Group C off. Additionally, unlike in previous editions, there will be no Round of 32 in WBC53; that means it’s just the top two from each group that makes it to the playoffs, and with #4 seed Sarzonia leading the way, it can only add pressure to the series that could well determine whether the Choughs have any chance of making it back to the playoffs: standing in their way will be a very experienced, very determined, and, by now, very familiar adversary.
I am RPing this tournament as taking place after the EBT concludes.

Quizmaster: You have a few seconds to discuss.
Quizzer 1: I don’t have many ideas. What about you guys?
Quizzer 2: Well, it looks a lot like cricket. There’s a bat, ball, gloves.
Quizzer 3: But it isn’t cricket though. Is there a sport like it?
Quizmaster: Five seconds left.
Quizzer 1: Let’s take a guess. Any guesses?
Quizmaster: I’m sorry, your time is up. The question is passed to Team C. Any answers?
Quizzer 4: Guys I think its baseball. I read about it somewhere. Should we go with that? Baseball.
Quizmaster: That is the correct answer! The sport of baseball – quite popular in other nations but not so much in ours. Have you heard of the WBC?
Quizzer 4: Yeah, the World Baseball… Classic? I think?
Quizmaster: That’s correct, yes. Ardengard is actually sending a team this year.
Quizzer 4: Really? Do we even have baseball players? Who’s in the team?
Quizmaster: I don’t know. I really don’t know.

Baseball in Ardengard: If it wasn’t clear from the interaction above, baseball is not at all a known sport in Ardengard. Having a bat and ball usually means it’s time for stumps and a 22 yard pitch. Terms like ‘pitcher’, ‘first base’ and so on are as foreign as…. well…. they’re literally involved in the expression ‘as foreign as baseball’. Hence when Harold Palmer set about gathering a team of twenty players or so, everyone agreed he’d gone bonkers.
Harold Palmer said the following in an interview:
“I was fascinated by baseball, I really was. Cricket is alright but baseball has a different feel to it that puts it entirely apart and makes it a truly brilliant sport in its own right. Getting together a team for Ardengard faced two challenges – firstly getting so many players together, and secondly authorizing the team to represent this country. For the first, I spent months identifying and gathering individuals who had the skills required, but just didn’t know it yet. That goes for both players and coaches. That was the easy bit. To make it work, the boys and girls have spent a year or two now practicing the sport. Yes, years. You media only heard about it last year when it was announced, but we’ve spent more time behind this than you can imagine. Authorization to establish a national baseball council came with the progress of the team. That, of course, was followed by the construction of the baseball ground in Lothlerium and finally the submission of the squad to the 53rd WBC. Does it all work out in the end? We’ll have to wait and see.”

Ardengardian National Baseball Team

Name: Ardengard
Trigram: ARG
Nickname: None established yet. The commentators are instructed to make up a few along the way until one eventually sticks.
Stadium: Rockbell Baseball Ground, Lothlerium (40,000)

The Rockbell Baseball Ground finished completion two weeks before the first matchday of the WBC. It was built so that the Ardengard baseball team has a home ground to play at. Housing a modest 40,000 spectators, the ground will be first played at when Drawkland visits Ardengard in the group stage of the WBC.
As for Lothlerium, it’s Ardengard’s top tourist destination. Located right off the Glisten Sea, its sandy beaches, recreational activities and sublime weather make it a relaxing environment for the athletes and fans alike.

Round 2

"Hello and welcome back to ENN Tournament Report, I'm your host Josh Seametzle, and today, I haven't kidnapped Karsten Rhodes to talk about baseball! Instead, I'm going to be talking about the 53rd edition of the World Baseball Classic without forcing you to hear the muffled screams of a man with duct tape over his mouth. Instead, I've brought along Rebecca Saunders, the starting first basewoman for this team!"

"Hi Josh!"

"So, before I go on talking about the teams in this group stage, I'd like to talk to you briefly about a tournament you just competed in, the Londinium Challenge Invitational. So I heard you got third?"

"Yeah, out of four, but yeah, I'm happy with the result."

"Third out of four... and you're happy?

"Of course! The four teams invited every year are the two most recent WBC finalists, the best newcomers, and the hosts, Nova Anglicana. With a field like that, I'll happily take a third place!"

"So, what made this third place possible? Was it blind luck, good results, or something else?"

"I'd say a mix of the two. Getting to the third place playoff is easy, all you have to do is play, not have a catastrophic incident, and bam, you're in!"

"So what happened once you got there?"

"We were up against Nova Anglicana for the playoff, and... something felt good. We had previously beaten the Lions in the group stage 10-3, so there was definitely a certain amount of boosted morale going into the playoff..."

"Ten... to three??? That should be the headline right there, that right there..."

"Yeah, something was certainly weird with that game. After that... something was just off about them. Granted, we played a lot better than we should have, but they just weren't on their best game. Two wins, 3-1 and 5-2, clinched it."

"Ten... to three?"

"Why are you focusing on that?"

"N-nothing... so, let's talk about the World Baseball classic, looking at the teams you'll be facing. First up is... Banija."

"Yeah, I'm not really expecting a lot out of the two series against Banija... maybe two wins if we're lucky? I don't think any better can come of them unless our bats really get hot."

"But then we have Ardengard, a newer nation to the sporting world, but one who's seriously been making a splash in multiple sports."

"So... us last year? Ha ha ha... yeah, hopefully we can get 4 wins, but anything is possible against such an untested team."

"After that should be Bardney..."

"Hm, I don't really know too much about them..."

"They're the 17th ranked team in the multiverse, if that helps."

"Then maybe we could scrape three wins out? Bet on two though."

"After that would be Drawkland, what are your thoughts on them?"

"They've been a strong team in the past, but haven't they had some bad results lately? I mean, I still don't expect more than three wins, but it's at least an opportunity to pick up points."

"Lastly, how about finishing off against the same team you started the last tournament against? Ranoria!"

"Well, that could be fun... didn't we only get two wins against them last time? Don't expect us to have improved at all, they could be a tough team, with potential to psych us out."

"So, Rebecca, all told, how do you think you'll do in the World Baseball Classic?"

"I think we could eke out a playoff spot again, maybe by getting third or top fourth-placers..."

"...only top two advance this year."

"Oh, right... we're screwed then. See you all in 2024 I guess!"

"Don't be like that... until Rebecca inevitably gets proven wrong, I've been Josh Seametzle, and this has been Tournament Report."
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

Previously on Llamaphant Pro Baseball

After a tough season of 160 games, two teams would have to face off in one more game. Their 160-game schedule left the Ruditown Dachshunds and the Rüsselsheim Blue Sox with identical records of 87-73. This would neccesesitate a tiebreaking game 161 to decide which of those two teams would reach the Llamaphant Pro Baseball Postseason as the second wildcard team, and which team would have to watch the playoffs from their coach.

The two teams had a very different way to reach this spot. While the Dachshunds got off to a hot start, the Blue Sox only got back above .500 with 133 games already in the books. Even when the Dachshunds took their surprising slide around game 60 where they double-digit games in a row, they were still ahead of the Blue Sox in the standings. The Dachshunds were 42-38 at the All-Star break, two games behind the Flames for the second wildcard, but it seemed predictable that the Flames would flame out eventually. The Blue Sox, meanwhile, were 38-42, tied for last in the SNL Central, and seemed well out of a possible playoff spot. With 30 left to play, the Dachshunds had risen 73-57 and the first wildcard spot, while the Blue Sox were just 64-66. That’s better than when they were 50-61, but making the playoffs still seemed just about impossible. They then went on a 23-7 run to finish out the season, one of the best 30-game runs of any team at any point in the season, while the Dachshunds failed to use the chances they had. They had a chance to end it in Elephant Valley, but lost both games they played at Elephant Valley United to close out their season, while the Blue Sox managed to knock off the Newport Dolphins in game 160 to reach this point.

Coming into the season, most had expected the Dachshunds were expected to be a solid team capable of making the playoffs, although some said they lacked star-power. Coached by Lee Bradley, the coach that had turned this team into a playoff contender in the South Newlandian Baseball League, the team was very international – in fact, their starting lineup only featured one South Newlandian and one Super-Llamanean each. Instead, the key stars of the team came from Newmanistan, with ace Brianna Fitch, star reliever Tori Fuller and shortstop Hannah Mitchell leading the team. They featured several other stars, too, including great pitchers in Gene Almac from TJUN-ia, long-time Elephants starting pitcher Blake Robbins. The Dachshunds finished their season with the fourth-lowest runs allowed. On the other side of the ball, they featured plenty of talent as well, including WBC players Winter (Ethane), Bennett (Ko-oren), Moires (TJUN-ia), and a group of talented Bollonichians and Nova Anglicans. First-round pick Angela Bengtsson also played a great season, but despite a respectable run total, the Dachshunds often lacked the clutch plays, the killer instinct to end games.

The Blue Sox, meanwhile, were coached by Ember Marshall, in first year with the Sox, after previously having success with the Kohnheadian U21-team. Heading into the season, Marshall had arguably the best pitching group in the league at his disposal, featuring four regular WBC starters in Vocar-Dijo (Zwangzug), Crouch (Kohnhead), Sakaguchi (Quintessence of Dust) and Harris (Hannasea), along with fourth-overall selection Griffin Gonzalez for what was likely the best rotation on paper. Coupled with DiVicenzo from Hannasea, another regular WBC player, and Sjabard, frequent reliever on the Elephants, in the bullpen, the pitching should have been stacked.
Injuries and bad luck threw them back, and the pitching never was what everyone expected it to be. They mostly showed up for that last part, when the Sox went 37-12, but early in the season, not much was to be seen from this rotation. The batting picked up the slack, and it wasn’t like that didn’t feature plenty of stars as well. Elite players include shortstop Theriault (Quintessence of Dust), and the entire outfield – Mathis (Hannasea), Hahn (Kohnhead), and Rentería (Super-Llamaland) for a full group of WBC players at their disposal.

The Dachshunds would play host to the tiebreaker game, thanks to their superior head-to-head record against the Blue Sox. They had won 6 of 8 encounters in the regular season (8-5, 4-6, 1-0, 2-1, 11-3, 4-3, 4-0, 5-8), although none of these games happened in the remarkable last stretch the Blue Sox went on. Starting for the Dachshunds would be Gene Almac, while the Rüsselsheim Blue Sox would start Rudolph Vocar-Dijo on short rest. The two aces were about to deliver a great duel.

However, Almac started to show cracks as early as the top of the first inning, with a brutal RBI double by Mathis to score Hahn putting the Rüsselsheim Blue Sox up early.
The Dachshunds were not able to answer immediately, and instead fell further behind when Theriault went yard in the third inning to put the Blue Sox up 2-0. This was followed by a period of great pitching from both sides. Both pitchers played good games, and going into the sixth, Almac had allowed six hits, two runs, while Vocar-Dijo was pitching shutout ball with only three hits surrendered.
In the top of the sixth, it was Placido Taboada, the Ko-orenite third baseman for the Sox, who managed a clutch RBI single to score Sexton from second, just narrowly dodging the tag from Duplante to put the Blue Sox up three-nothing.
In the bottom half of that frame, the Dachshunds finally got on the board thanks to an RBI-hit off the bat of Mason Bennett. Was this the beginning of a big comeback?
Or was it too little, too late? Heading into the eighth inning, the Dachshunds still down 1-3, they went to the bullpen. Erik McGuire, who had played a good season up to that point, put two runners on with one walk and one hit by Theriault, before facing Lucca Hahn with two on and one out. McGuire threw a fastball that caught a little too much plate, and Hahn hammered it over the fence of Dachshund Stadium, for a three-run homer that put the Blue Sox up 6-1.
The Dachshunds would need a monumental effort now, trailing by five runs, but Vocar-Dijo just about ended those hopes immediately by pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth to complete his massive, clutch start. The Dachshunds kept the Sox off the board in the top of the ninth, and Gostaf Sjabard was tasked with holding the 5-run lead, with Marshall surely already thinking about preserving the arm of closer DiVincenzo for the wildcard game in Masmow.
Sjabard put two men on base, but got out of it, with Rufus Salas popping out to end the game. The Blue Sox had done it; a decisive 6-1 win in the tiebreaking game had put them back into the playoffs, the first LPB playoffs. Meanwhile, for the Dachshunds, there was heartbreak. They had played a strong season in the extremely tough SNL North, won 87 games despite one of the toughest schedules, and would come up short in the end anyways.

It's Opening Day! The first cutoff of the tournament. The World Baseball Classic is officially upon us. Everybody's 0-0, so if you believe in yourself, everybody's title hopes are still alive and well!

Each MD I will be offering a small prompt. These prompts are not required and there is no extra bonus for doing them compared with doing a match report or any other type of RP; they’re simply there because, with a long group stage format and many tournaments competing for attention, inspiration may be running thin. Feel free to respond in whatever format you like – or ignore them entirely.

Today's prompt, in the spirit of Matchday 1, is about Opening Day. The first day of the baseball season is met with celebration. What do your fans do to celebrate the Opening Day of the World Baseball Classic? Is there any sort of ceremonies or celebrations for your team's home opener? In your domestic leagues, is anything special done by various club teams to celebrate their Opening Day of the season?

Home stadiums
Port Cartfort Park, capacity 24,100; DH used
Home ground of The Saboteurs Baseball Club Port Cartfort (CBL), average home attendance 22,100
Dimensions:
Left foul pole 317 ft; left field 349 ft; left-centre 397 ft; centre field 429 ft; right-centre 402 ft; right field 366 ft; right foul pole 322 ft; wall height 7 ft in left/left-centre; 13 ft in centre; 15 ft in right/right-centre
Right-handed hitters have far more joy at PCP than left-handed hitters. There are also a high number of triples and thanks to the dimensions, inside-the-park home runs are not uncommon at PCP.
To host all non-Milchama series

Orean Capital Grounds, regular capacity 22,000 (international capacity 38,000); DH not used
Home ground of Tiger Cats Orean Capital Baseball Club (NBL), average home attendance 21,560
Dimensions:
Left foul pole 321 ft; left field 352 ft; left-centre 376 ft; centre field 416 ft; right-centre 378 ft; right field 340 ft; right foul pole 319 ft; wall height 9 ft constant
Favours left-handed and right-handed hitters equally.

A 'typical' field with no weird configurations in outfield, the Capital Grounds is the oldest ground in Orean and has been known by many names through its existence. It fell into disuse when the old Liventian league folded, although it was used for casual amateur games. The new club bought the ground from the city council and reduced the stadium capacity, although there is space for 16,000 temporary seats for international games.

For the first time since WBC44, the national team will return to the Capital Grounds, which means captain Dermot Rowntree will get to play at both his club home parks. As this ground belongs to an NBL team, the Designated Hitter will NOT be in use for the three matches against Milchama here.
To host series vs Milchama only

The team is colloquially known as the Red-and-Gold, after the colours of the Liventian flag (and their uniforms).

Baseball Liventia has announced the following players will form part of the squad:

(OOC: This is a very loose pastiche of "Dune." I'm not sure where it's going to go. Maybe nowhere. We'll see.)

The Rice Must Grow

In the year that Griffith Puyo graduated from Universitaet Schwandt, in Cham, Tulf District, Jacinta MacRaun came to visit.

MacRaun, like many Bigtopian-Zwangzugians, had dark skin, a tall frame, and a grandmother from Shorn in Dancirk. Unlike many Bigtopian-Zwangzugians, she had inscrutable tendencies towards superstitious decision-making, and an enviable job as the manager of the Weegham Rainmakers, having kept the latter despite, or perhaps because of, the former.

Griffith knew better than to assume she had come to watch him. She could have, of course. He was the star of the university's baseball team. But perhaps she was helping her team's minor-league affiliates scout, or maybe just wanted to spectate at the amateur level. Either way, she sat in the high bleachers, occasionally snacking on some Peak'n'Break stadium food. She did not take notes. She hardly needed to, of course--even university teams had statistics recorded and game summaries written, mostly by overly ambitious sophomores who wanted something to look good on their resumes--but all the same, Griffith wondered what she was looking for. "Intangibles"? Team chemistry? The pigeons who began circling after the seventh-inning stretch?

Two days later, coach Riemann told him that MacRaun wanted to meet with him later that day. So Griffith had to text Nancy and tell her that he'd probably be late to dinner, sorry, team stuff. Nancy quickly texted back okay and some increasingly nonsensical emojis. "Smiley" probably meant that she wasn't mad, but was "yellow heart" different than "green heart"? And what did "wavey hands" have to do with anything?

Maybe it was just that he understood Nancy that he didn't worry about it too much. Nancy was his counterpart on the Schwandt football team; she understood being busy with practice, or catching up on work he'd missed for a tournament. At times he felt like she was his mirror image, like he was narcissistic enough to date his alternate-universe self. At other times, she felt entirely separate. Why were women always using emojis?

MacRaun met him in coach Riemann's office. They talked about the doubleheader that Schwandt had swept against the Lanius Starfish, how Griffith had settled on batting left but throwing right. Then she produced an old screenshot of his Blatter profile. "Is this you?"

"Um, yeah," he said. He wasn't super active on social media, not because he was avoiding the culture wars, but because he was busy with baseball, to say nothing of his studies and personal life.

She tapped the banner picture, which showed him and Nancy playing broomball, one of the few things they got to do as teammates. "And what's this?"

"Nancy Sachar. She's a football player--"

"I know who she is," MacRaun interrupted. "What's she doing with you?"

"Broomball." Their relationship wasn't exactly a secret, though why MacRaun cared, Griffith couldn't say.

"Do you love her?"

Griffith bristled. "That's none of your business."

"Everything's my business," said MacRaun. "Are you going to marry her?"

"How should I know?" he snapped. Actually, they'd talked about "would we hyphenate our names? would we do it before we sign a contract, so we don't go changing our names one season into our careers as pros? would we just keep our own last names?" But it wasn't MacRaun's job to care about that, and her prying was making him increasingly on edge.

"If you had kids," she said, "they'd be quite the athletes. Think of the genetics on both sides!"

"If Nancy wants to have kids, with me or anyone else, she'll wait until her playing career is done. Or maybe adopt. What are you trying to do, genetically engineer some super-human athlete? That's creepy."

MacRaun chuckled. "It's a test."

"Did I pass?"

"Maybe," she said. "You care about this woman, enough to stand up to me. That's something." She folded up the screenshot, then produced a glove from her duffel bag. It was black with red stitches. "Try this on."

"Why?"

"Another test," said MacRaun.

How were the Rainmakers still in contention with a manager like that? Griffith picked up the glove, turned it over, shook it. Nothing unusual. A glove for a right-hander, or at least, someone who fielded right-handed. He tried it on. It fit perfectly.

"Do you watch the Zebras?" she said.

"Sure," he said. The national team had only just returned for World Baseball Classics 49 and 50, but they'd made the quarterfinals in the latter milestone edition, losing out to TJUN-ia.

"Did you see the quarterfinals?"

"Yeah."

"How'd you feel?"

"I don't know." Griffith shrugged. "If you're asking me whether you think I could do better, I can't. Not yet, anyway."

"You're afraid of my traps? Good."

"And it's not good to be too nationalistic. But...8-7, a walkoff, that hit from Enrique? That stung."

"He feels pain. You're human, then. That's good."

Griffith blinked. "Were you expecting a robot?"

"You can't be too careful," said MacRaun.

A month later, a contract arrived offering him a spot in the Rainmakers organization. He signed it Griffith Puyo-Sachar.
