Operation Shieldwall [FT, Semi-Closed]

Postby Huerdae » Thu Aug 08, 2019 5:52 pm

OoC: This is a semi-closed thread. All the major players are already spoken for, but if you want to take part using a very small strike team or other low-impact group we will consider it. Please TG both myself and Alexonya, as agreement from both is required for entry.

Adistia System, Northeast Gamma Quadrant
I.M.S. Devourer, Harbinger-Class Battleship
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

The Huerdaen formation hung quietly in orbit, the last of the destroyers trailing just a tiny amount of green energy across the upper atmosphere, filtering it down like some strange rain to dissipate well before touching the surface of the planet below. It was serene, beautiful even, but it was passing.

Captain O’Sionny let his eyes linger on the screen, watching as every last particle slowly faded into nothing against the gray and brown. The job was supposed to be easy, but in their path was the possibility of ships more numerous than his own, as well as up to ten defensive orbitals. Even if their estimate was low, it could be a deadly fight, and they had to follow up in securing, and then holding, the landing corridor for the followup strikes.

None of that would occur if the battle group didn’t begin their assault, though. In nearby systems, each separate from each other to avoid drawing attention, were their ‘allied’ forces for this engagement. It wasn’t the first operation he was in command of, but it was his first operation in command of a Huerdaen blitz, which would be supported by three separate allied nations who would be judging his actions, and who had supposed overall authority over the conflict zone.

Still, it had been his idea at the start. The most powerful nation in this system, the Adistia Greater Hegemony, had decided it was not going to listen to nations which had left them to struggle until now. The three lesser nations, forming the Coalition of Unified Prosperity, had listened intently to the threat of the Welded, but their lack of naval power, or even orbital control, left them helpless. Only the AGH had the ability to prevent a landing of the welded, and their isolationist nature and outright hostility didn’t allow them to even consider the warnings that were brought to them.

The only reason they hadn’t conquered the CUP was a mere matter of convenience. It was easier to send their unwanted types to these small nations than to conquer them and solve the problem themselves.

There wasn’t time for a diplomatic option. It was estimated that Welded influence may start appearing in as little as two months, meaning that the Huerdaen needed to be off world within a month. And if Adistia fell, it would allow the Welded to bypass half of the defensive lines of local states, threatening the survival of the GRA’s puppet alliance, the NEGL. Not to mention a threat to the western border of the HSE.

This led to the only viable conclusion - eliminate the AGH. If any one of the nations in CUP survived in any condition to restore order after the fall of the AGH. It made their requirements twofold - bring about the complete downfall of the AGH before the Welded arrive, and before the Shield had to withdraw, and capture as many defenses intact as possible.

This came with a rather significant caveat. The AGH didn’t allow outsiders to land on the planet, and maintained a rather durable system of theater shields that were capable of covering the surface to cease an attack. Ever since the founding of the world by the prior refugees, they had violently protected their interests, taking shelter and preparing. They maintained a flotilla of Exodus ships, vessels with modern technology, weapons, and defenses, that they used to strike enemy forces from behind to great effect. These were the very ships that brought them to this world, and they served as the elite orbital defense of the world, beyond the artillery starbases that helped protect the system from smallcraft that may be able to bypass the shield layers.

His thoughts were interrupted by the gentle reminder in his head that it was five minutes to operation start, and with a sigh, he tapped out the command on console at his right hand. In an instant, the ship shook with the sudden drums of war, pounding out the instructions for the crew of his ship to prepare for battle. The call to stations was quickly repeated across the small battle group, and his pad lit up to display all ships showing ready for combat.

They had run simulations. Tests. Even hired a desperate pirate runner to try to attack the planet, land troops, and withdraw, as a proof of concept. What they found was that as long as the shield rose fully, they would be unable to land troops in less than two weeks. Attrition by the stations as they tried to bypass the shield would be significant, and it would take approximately ten million Shield to break the AGH’s grip on the world within the one month timeframe and a painful slog of fighting across multiple stations hiding under each shield sector, and then assaulting well-prepared defensive positions around the generators themselves before they could even land significant numbers of troops or provide fire support or deploy air assets. He had just over a hundred thousand soldiers.

Grinding his teeth together, Captain O’Sionny forced his finger onto the pad, signaling the fleet to activate their HGDs and begin the assault, simultaneously informing the other three fleets and their ground forces that the operation was beginning. The twenty-two ships of the Huerdaen fleet blinked out of sight from above the barren landscape like flying insects disappearing into the night sky.

The sudden appearance of the Huerdaen fleet was a shock to the defenders, as relatively small warships opened fire on the enemy defensive stations. With well-drilled discipline, the defensive barriers around the planet began to rise, even as one of the stations broke apart, succumbing to the heavy barrage of fire from the well-aligned Apocalypse Engine before the defenses could come into play. ‘Below’ the battle group, energy barriers flickered to life, crackling with energy as the enemy deployed their defenses, right on schedule.

The barriers created an almost organic-looking shell over the planet, with arcing lightning capable of taking out a corvette cutting across the surface where the shields neared each other, even as the ghostly-white appearance of the shield obscured details on the planet below. Gravekeeper, undeterred, moved into position near one of the bubble shields, only to have the arc slam against the ship’s shields, scorching a line across the hull. For a moment, it looked like the vessel may have lost its orbital stability as the nose dipped slightly, but it righted itself.

In an instant, the Apocalypse Engine came into position, its projectors reinforcing the Gravekeeper’s shields until they, too, suddenly arced lighting back into the bubble below. As soon as it did, the shield below it paled and faded into wisps of shield reaching toward the ship like the desperate clutches of a sea creature suffocating in open air. The entire shield, once solid and firm below the cruiser, lay open like a bleeding sore before the Huerdaen fleet.

The stations, once protected by the shield, turned their weapons awkwardly upward to try to engage the beast of war hanging over them, their missiles and projectiles slamming into the reinforced shielding in a desperate attempt to dislodge the heavily-garrisoned ship. The return fire was devastating.

Promise of Pain, a relatively small cruiser, angled its nose toward a station and cut it cleanly in half with a spinal round that continued through the target, even as flak rounds and defensive weapons filled orbit between Gravekeeper and the defensive stations. A second volley from the heavy guns of Apocalypse Engine brought low a third station, as Unrestrained Fury and Devourer hammered apart a trio of stations, their secondary armaments giving no quarter as the heavy barrage tore through bulkheads, bodies, and defenses with unequalled determination. The remaining station, alone and embattled against the Huerdaen in a losing fight, began shedding escape pods into the hellfire of detonations against shielding, or in the still-arcing shield barriers nearby. Explosive shells as large as armored vehicles slammed against the shields, shattering the poorly protected pods and scattering the frantic occupants across orbit haphazardly.

As the station fought valiantly, and ground-based anti-orbital missile silos began to open up, the cruisers fell into a loose square over the gap in the shield, opening their bays as dropships and gunships slipped out of them, diving toward the surface of the planet on wings of fire. Talon gunships, little more than sliver-like darts, flitted into the remains of the stations as they fell, while the Rocs of the Imperial Shield lumbered into protective formations, leaving lanes of fire as the Gravekeeper’s defensive weapons cut into the rising missiles.

The first response, expected, was a small squadron of warships. About equal to the size of the Devourer, they outnumbered the Huerdaen by almost half, and beat them out in tonnage by an even greater margin. Their ships, however, found themselves beset by the Huerdaen in a way they didn’t expect. Trying to keep themselves away from the Huerdaen and engage at range, they found themselves suffering under the Unrestrained Fury and her attention. Unable to draw a good lock, they struggled to engage the heavily kinetic Huerdaen warships, with most of their missiles coming nowhere near the target as their systems were overwhelmed by the EWAR cruiser. In trading fire with the cruisers, they were unaware of the approach of the destroyer groups under cover of localized ECM systems on the Terror-Class destroyers.

The first to strike came from directly above their formation, away from the heavy guns and slow-moving turrets of the AGH-built heavy cruisers. Demonrage came in at a breakneck pace, the massive rotary spinal slamming rounds into the ventral section of a carrier built from a freighter, the heavy rounds tearing straight through the hull as if it was nothing more than paper. Less than half a squadron left the vessel before internal detonations rocked the ship, and the added-on armor plating across its entire starboard side was blown free by an explosion. Not yet having made appropriate orbital velocity, the ship began to descend into the shield layer, where arcing blasts tore at the hull, cutting it up in vicious patterns.

The Anger-Class were not far behind. Homing in on the heaviest-armored craft, they focused on a heavy cruiser, each launching a series of massive torpedoes that tore apart shielding in the blue-white impossible light of antimatter detonations. By the time the second destroyer was inbound, the ship had already taken a direct hit. The torpedoes that struck the exposed armor, unprotected by shielding, caused the ship to slide sideways, across the formation of its allies and into the firing lane of a nearby cruiser. There, the final torpedo slammed into the core of the ship, and the vessel went dead, drifting in space without control as the reactor was reduced to a gaping hole in the ship.

All around, the scene played out over and over again, as the struggling cruisers and heavy cruisers of the AGH fought to hammer the armored Devourer while their ships were being taken apart piecemeal by the destroyer groups. Despite this, a shipyard began to show power spikes as the dozens, possibly hundreds of reserve vessels in the Hegemony docks began to power up for combat, threatening to overwhelm the Huerdaen battle group if left uncontested.

However, an FTL signature entered at long range, and the enemy Exodus Flotilla arrived. Armored and armed with weapons far beyond those of the locally-produced variants, they immediately began operations to open fire on the Huerdaen battle group, even as the defensive batteries of the Huerdaen turned to hold back the tide of munitions. Flak rounds burst, throwing bomblets into swerving missiles to destroy them, as small shield generators flared and burned out in moments, only long enough to soak the impact of a kinetic round or energy blast. What had been empty space between the fleets became a wall of detonations, defensive fire, and shield flares as the Huerdaen took on a defensive position, keeping the fire away from the descending dropships and attack craft.

They were pinned, holding the corridor open, but it was exactly what they had planned. The extra ship attached to the battle group, the twenty-second that set them apart from a standard battle group, had lingered safely behind the shadow of Devourer, out of the way. Suddenly, power spikes all across the tiny vessel brought it into sharp contrast with the other warships.

Behind the protective blasts provided by the Huerdaen, an energy vortex began to swirl, distorting optical sensors and disrupting energy blasts that passed through it into streaking through at strange and insane angles.

The Cyno vortex shifted and distorted everything around it, visible from the surface even as the AGH forces began desperate preparations to invade their much smaller neighbors. Reactionary forces mounted up in armored vehicles and aircraft, as a massive fleet of interceptors streaked toward the Huerdaen landing group, as the fluctuations of the vortex stabilized. Panicked, one of the Colonels of a Heavy Infantry group in the landing parties sent a distress call, identifying the horde of hundreds of atmospheric fighters coming their way. Grimly, Captain O’Sionny only nodded, sending back a quick response.

“Mutts are inbound. Hold your course and formation. Prepare defensive fire. CUP forces are holding the shield generator below, but won’t last long. If you falter this window closes. There are no second chances. MAKE the drop zone.”

Opening a channel to the allied fleets, he reported the current situation in the gruff way expected of all Huerdaen soldiers across the galaxy.

“ARS Invincible, it’s time. Get your asses in the fight. Carrier and assault craft arrival coordinates listed. Enemy flight inbound with weapons hot, require immediate intercept. Admiral York, the enemy shipyards and Exodus Fleets are already in play.”

[Aye, Captain O’Sionny. Standbye, we’ve got a good lock on your position and are inbound.]

The response comes back synthetically, though it’s a very close imitation of York’s voice; the Alexzonyans were already jacked-in to their warships, awaiting this transmission from the Huerdaen.

Admiral Sonia York takes a moment to review the situation. It was only a moment; at the speed of thought, assisted by a myriad of VI interfaces and the Invincible’s Wiki-22-D AI, reading in the disposition of the enemy forces didn’t take long. She sent out a further series of communications.

To the Fenvarians:
[High Captain, the Huerdaen first wave is away, but they’re meeting heavy resistance from enemy atmospheric forces. Deploy your formation and strike craft in support and suppress the planetary defenses.]

To the Peninsularians:
[Captain, its time. A squadron of enemy Exodus warships is closing on the Huerdaen formation and trying to pin them to the orbitals. I need your Hornets to roll them up. Jump in on their flank, light them up. Good hunting.]

To the Arcadians:
[Admiral Fitzgerald, the Huerdaen are engaged and the first wave is away. Send your fleet into the system, but the priority is on the protection of the invasion transports. We don’t want to risk unnecessary casualties on our invasion forces in orbit.]

“I understand that, Admiral York; this isn’t my first rodeo” Fitzgerald growls in return. The Alexzonyans were necessary, and good allies viewed objectively, but Fitzgerald quickly grew weary of their condescension. He had fought on the Scythian front and had two ships shot out from under him as a Captain during that fight; York, presumably, had spent most of her career boldly going… in circles. He knew how to do his job. “We acknowledge and are jumping in now.”

York taps the controls, sending the last message to the GRA fleet.
[The enemy shipyards are our target. Command wants them intact. Invincible is the formation guide; maneuvering orders are inbound. Boarding parties standby and await launch orders. Gunnery stations engage targets of opportunity on arrival and await further direction. Synchronize jump with Invincible. Godspeed and good hunting.]

It’s not long after that the arrival of the GRA forces is heralded with bursts of radiation as the sleek saucers and nacelles drop back into realspace near the shipyard. There’s a bare moment’s hesitation before the GRA’s cruisers open fire on the defending warships. The bursts of photons from the DALA lasers lance across the void first, punching small, circular slagged holes in enemy warships and scything down enemy fighters and missiles. The sweeping beams of neutrons from the particle beam weapons follow not long after, running their foes through with blasts of radiation to flash-kill the crews and fry electronics systems.

An enemy capital ship rolls under fire from the lighter weapons, nearly bringing its broadside guns to bear before heavy kinetic slugs from the enormous spinal cannons on Invincible and her sister ship lance into it in enormous blooms of fire; the shattered battleship comes apart entirely not long after. The numerous lighter spinals on the Patrol Capital Ships and the Expeditionary Cruisers seek out other targets, putting their cfrac projectiles through enemy defense platforms and cruisers as the opportunity arises.

As the defending hostile ships begin to come apart, the Alexzonyans launch boarding craft of their own from the bellies of the Fleet Expeditionary Cruisers, towards the hulking shipyard. Dronecraft fall in protectively around them, taking point defense fire in the stead of their manned companions as precision fire from the GRA’s DALA lasers answers any attempt to target the transports. So far, exactly as planned.

The Arcadians arrive only a few seconds later, further back from the heat of the fighting. Several trains of invasion transports, Northeast Gamma League Auxiliaries, supported by Arcadian League Navy ships. Fitzgerald took a moment to assess the situation, and then flagged the Exodus ships. “Steer clear of those, boys,” he transmits to his formations. “Angries have them under control.” He scans another moment, then opens a direct channel. “Admiral Miller, your divisions may detach. Engage and scatter the enemy warships forming up starward, clusters Alpha and Kappa; in another minute or two they’re going to become a problem on York’s flank, and you she is not the most insufferable officer the Als could have sent. Let’s not gamble on a replacement.”

As ordered, about 40 Arcadian warships peel off of the larger formation; a Cataphract-class Battlecruiser like Fitzgerald’s own flagship on point. The Cataphracts were a joint project with the GRA; though smaller than the older Arcadia-class Battleship, the Cataphracts had imported nanobonded graphene armor sheathing and an Alexzonyan-made heavy spinal cannon that made them the most survivable and hardest-hitting vessels in the fleet. The Arcadian forces scatter the enemy ships in the formation designated Alpha before they can form into a proper order of battle; formation Kappa settles in instead for a fight in whizzing metal shot and flashing shields and shattered armor as the two subgroups close range.

“Admiral Cantor, deploy your divisions to support Admiral Miller,” orders Fitzgerald, before tapping in another set of orders, rebalancing the dedicated escorts for the transports as well as the heavy ships of his own division into a tighter defensive posture. He feels the tug of his old shipmaster instincts, wanting to lead his Battlecruiser into an attack. Instead, he holds, and is rewarded shortly thereafter by pivoting his remaining heavy divisions and swatting away an enemy move towards the invasion fleet. He knew how to do his job.

“High Captain.” spoke one of the navigators as they turned around in their chair. “We have confirmation on our jump vector.” Just then one of the communication officers turned around as well, looking back at the High Captain.

“We also got new orders from the Alexzonyans.”

The High Captain smiled and chuckled as she stood up and walked to the edge of the railing, as she walked to the edge of the railing she folded her hands behind her back. “I’ll be damned, the spacers held up their end of the bargain.” she then turned to the left and then the right as she scanned the bridge crew. Granted the word spacers wasn't the most polite way of referring to the Huerdean, but still it was a nickname that the Fenvarian gave to them. She could think of worse names to call them. ‘Cyborgs’ was another one, granted, very unpopular but still used to quickly describe them. She then turned to the communications officer and put on a straight face. “What are the orders from the ARS Invincible?”

“In short, take out enemy atmo craft and planetary defenses harassing Huerdean warships in orbit.” replied the communications officer. “Also, Huerdean ships are taking a heavy beating from those defenses and craft.”

“Alright, sailors of the Republic, let's get this show on the road. You know the plan, we jump in and gun straight to the planet. The Huerdean ships will create a corridor for us. Our job is to clear air space and provide air denial for the enemy aircraft. As well as suppress enemy planetary defenses, any sort of ground to space cannon, missile, laser, and so on. Give the spacers enough breathing room for them to hit the ground.” started the captain as she grinned with a rather toothy smile. “Once they hit the ground we can start landing our boys in sufficient numbers to help the spacers on the ground. This is a multinational military effort, I expect professionalism to the highest degree. Might step on a few toes, but let us be professional about it understand?!”

“Yes High Captain!” reported the bridge crew in unison as they started to work on their assigned tasks. They conversed with each other about duties, calculations, reports, and other manners. With their respective commanders ordering them around, assigning tasks and archiving reports that would be sent to the High Captain or to High Command back on Arcadia. Amongst them several AI units walked around, assisting the crew that needed it, checking calculations, reports and other pieces of data. The High Captain watched as the crew worked for a few moments before, with a smile on their face they shifted their weight to one of their heels and spun on it. Turning themselves around as they began to walk towards their command chair, which sat only a few meters away from her.

Once she was in her chair she crossed her legs and looked to her left, which to her left sat a holographic display of the fleet, detailing each of the ships status, components, and hull integrity. There was a lot of information, however, it was updated thanks to the extensive AI network that was aboard the ship and aboard the other ships in the fleet. This provided an in real time update for all of the warships in the fleet, it was supposed to help ease the tactical strains of combat when it came to the fleet commander. However, there was a problem, this system was just recently implemented on the newer ships in the fleet. To top it off even more, this was going to be the first full blown combat operation that this system was going to be used in.

She was familiar with the system to a degree, understanding how it works and how to properly use it, but those were under controlled conditions. Simulations, mock battles, and so on. Situations that were controlled by High Command and the testing units, as for a real combat scenario? This would be the first time, and a first time going up a determined enemy like the ones. But her crew was eager, and so was she. Eager to show what the Fenavria Republic was made up of.

“High Captain, all ships have finished their calculations.” Interrupted the ship board navigation AI.

“Excellent.” replied the High Captain as they sat back in their chair and relaxed to a small degree, as things were about to heat up. She could tell that her crew was nervous and anxious for some combat, they all were. She then reached over to her console and clicked a button on it, broadcasting her message to all ships. “All ships, you are clear to jump.” replied the High Captain in a stern but affirmative tone as she addressed the rest of the fleet. Soon there was a soft and growing hum as the hyperspace drive finally warmed up and was ready to jump, with the stretch of the stars the ship went into hyperspace.

It would be some time, but soon another burst of radiation appeared on sensors, and then followed by what appeared to be several ripples. Soon, twenty eight ships dropped out of hyperspace, right on top of the Huerdean fleet, right in the middle of the action. The Fenvaria ships could be described as smaller than what people thought, however, aggressive, angular, predatory, and vicious, like sharks of the void. Once coming out of hyperspace the ships had been quick to act, maneuvering their way so they didn't get bunched up and shot at like fish in a barrel. An explosion rocked the bridge of the Unyielding Honor, causing the High Captain to curse as she rocked forward a bit.

“Who’s fucking idea was it to have us jump right on top of this cluster fuck?!”

“That would be the Huerdean, ma’am.....” replied one of the navigation officers as they tapped away on their holographic display. “THey did create a corridor for us!”

“Enemy Cruiser! Portside, bearing 2320, plane 3! Currently engaging the Huerdean destroyer, they are retargeting!” yelled one of the sensor officers as they looked at their screen and then back towards the High Captain. “Seems we caught them off guard ma’am.”

“Excellent! All ships open fire! I want our space clear! Order all carriers to get their fighters and bombers in the void ASAP, I want them flying now!”

“Aye aye!”

Taking a few seconds the Fenvaria ship opened fired with a hail of kinetics, however, most of them being broadsides from their heavy kinetic cannons and their 120mm railgun autocannons. On the bridge of the Anubis Class dreadnought the High Captain watched as the turrets of the ship turned to the portside and took a few moments before they finally lit up. Flashes of light twinkled periodically as they fired round after round into the enemy warship that was to their portside. The dull thumps of the turrets could be felt on the bridge. This made the High Captain smile as it was quite the light show, a hypnotic and relaxing light show of ship fire.

Several ships started to open up with their missiles as well, most of them firing off their nuclear fusion missiles, which streaked high and then dropped down fast. Other ships started to move themselves so they could be in a position to use their spinal guns upon the enemy to deliver as much pain upon them as possible. After a few moments of shouting orders and getting roles established, the Fenvaria fleet moved into position, the two flotillas breaking off into smaller wolf pack squadrons providing a mix of voidcraft, screening, attack and anti ship warfare. As the Unyielding Honor moved through space it barreled down on the poor cruiser that was harassing the Huerdean destroyer, it first opened fired with a triple salvo from it’s super spinal cannons before it moved right into knife fighting range and opened fire with a full broadside to the poor cruiser. A full thirty five guns, a mix of the heavy kinetic cannons and the 120mm railgun autocannons, firing in one huge volley into the side of the cruiser.

“This is High Captain Kaisu Janhunen, of the Unyielding Honor, 178th Flotilla of the Fenvaria Republic Navy. Captain O’Sionny, good to make your acquaintance.” started the High Captain Kaisu as she looked towards the prow of the ship. “This is quite the welcoming party ain't it?”

FRN Bladed Truth, Arctic Wolf class carrier

“All pilots, report to your fighters, all pilots, report to your fighters.” blared the PA system as the ships dropped out of hyperspace and into the fray of the battle. Personnel ran up and down the corridor of the ships, as they reported to their battlestations. Troopers in full gear ran to intersections of the ships setting up defensive barricades, kill zones, and machine gun emplacements. As for the pilots, they were booking it to their fighters and bombers, all of them suited up in their olive green flight suits, spit polished black boots and their grey-black two tone helmets. That also had a removable respirator and black polarized adjustable visor. Over all the look of their flight suits was very similar to that of the old 21st century US flight suit, however, unlike the US one, this one was registered against the vacuum and pressure of space. Also it had been tailored to fit the anatomy of the anthros.

As the pilots finally made it to their fighters they quickly went in and started to strap themselves in, ground crews would very quickly check over the craft’s weapons, ammunition, and payloads. Then strapped the pilots in. At one of the fighters, a F/VS-21 “Fire Fox '' Void Superiority Fighter, the Republic’s most famous, lead spitting SOB of a fighter. A young and dashing Lieutenant smiled at one of the ground crew members. Which caused them to smile back as well.

“So, LT. you think this is going to be a cake walk?”

“Hell no,” replied the LT as he snickered. “It is going to be two cake walks and a trip to the local bar.” The ground crewman shook his head and did one final check over the LT.’s harness before then retreating down the ladder. As the ground crewman retreated the armored bubble canopy lowered and the Lt turned on his squadron radio. “Alright ladies and gents, you know the drill, we are to hunt down and swat enemy fighters out of the void, then keep doing so until the enemy gets it through their thick skull of theirs that the FR owns this fucking skies. Understood?!”

“Hurrah” replied the rest of the squadron in unison, and with a grin the Lt. started his launch sequence, flipping switches for his guns, missiles, and engines. As well as his maneuvering thrusters and the onboard AI unit, also better known as SAEAT (Space Aerial Engagement Analysis And Targeting). Once all of the checks were complete, he gave a thumbs up to the ground crew officer, who returned it and placed it on his respirator, and clicked on his mag boots. Soon all of the squadrons reported that they were ready for flight.

At the control center, the officers there nodded to their commander, who then turned on the PA system. “Alright boys, you know what to do and good luck. All no ground crew operators please remove yourselves from the hangar bay, depressurization is in effect, I repeat depressurization is in effect.”

With that the doors leading into the hangar closed and sealed shut, the room then plugged into darkness before the runway lights under the fighters flicked on. The red hue lights also clicked on, creating a creepily red tint to the darkness. Moments into the preparations the room started to depressurize and the bay doors started to open, rays of light peeking through the opening of the bay doors.

With a grin under his mask the Lieutenant looked to the rest of his flight and tapped the AI link a few times, cycling it to a playlist that he had installed, which was not part of regulations. But he needed something to fit the mood. So as the doors opened he cycled through his music and found a song that he liked. It was an old Earth song but hell did it fit the mood, he tapped on it and soon in his jet, he was playing “Danger Zone”. Just in time too, as the bay doors opened and he looked forward, pulling down his visor moments before his Fire Fox Void Superiority fighter shot forward and into space.

Flashes of cannon fire and missiles explosions were there to greet him and his flight as they flew out, the lieutenant pushed forward on his side mounted joystick which caused the fighter to gun forward with incredible speeds. As the fighter gunned forward the rest of the squadron followed suit, staying information and moving as one. The lieutenant’s Fire Fox then rolled to the right as they swung around and headed towards the prow of the carrier. “Alright, Easy Leader here, Easy Flight sound off.” Ordered the lieutenant as he flicked another switch on his board.

“Easy One here”

“Easy Two here”

“Easy Three here”

“Easy Four here”

“Alright, all of Easy flight is here, Easy One give me a sitrep.” replied the lieutenant as he dodged another explosion and rolled to the side.

“Sir, we got an enemy flight heading towards the-” started Easy one, then they were interrupted by their wing commander.

“This is Commander Kaisa Tuomola, of the 987th Wing, all fighters converge on me, we are moving to engage.” replied a deep but feminine voice over the flight’s comm system. “We are seeing several hundred fighters on the scanner, all fighters, report to me over.” With that the line went dead.

The lieutenant gritted his teeth and looked around, then an ice blue nav point popped up on his visor HUD and on his canopy. He did some slight run downs, if it was several hundred fighters that meant that the commander was throwing them against a wave of fighters. But from what it looked like the rally point was in the middle of the Huerdean flak zone. What the hell was the commander thinking. Unless, he did some run downs, and then blinked before he clicked on his flight radio. “Alright form up, we are moving to assist the Commander.” he then turned to the left with his joystick and pressed down on his side mounted joystick, he turned to the left and gunned forward towards the rally point. Bobbing and weaving through past the warships as some of them engaged in board sides and explosions rocked the vacuum. The Fire Fox fighters danced through the void like artists on a canvas, their movements were clean, polished and determined.

“LT! The rally point! It is in the middle of the tinnies’s flak lines!” replied Easy two, as they whipped around one of the nearby explosions, doing a barrel roll to avoid it.

“Yes, I know.” replied the LT as he then pitched to one side and nosed dived to avoid an incoming piece of debris. “It is a part of the plan.”

“What fucking plan?!” replied Easy one
“It seems the Commander wants to draw them into the flak line to give us a bit more cover and support.”

“But we are in the line of fire!”

“I know, once they get in range we are going to get out of the firing lane....that should thin their numbers. Once thinned we are going to pounce on them.”

The rest of the flight said nothing but continued on their journey to the rally point. As they approached the rally point, the enemy flight was right upon them, and quickly engaged the Republic fighters that had just arrived. The Republic fighters then started to spread out and widen their formations, their adjustable wings widened a bit to reduce their speed slightly as they moved into attack formation. Once they were in attack formation the ships paused for a second before they gunned forward, all of them at once, leaving behind blue trails of light. The enemy flight also responded, by gunning forward as well, the two sides raced like mad men, trying to cover as much space as they could before they engaged in close combat. Like two medieval arms, running at each other arms at the ready, pikes lowered neither side flinching. Determined to fight each other in the brutal and deadly close combat that was dogfighting.

The Lieutenant’s flight was one of the ones in the front, under his mask he grit his teeth together, slowly grinding them as he pushed his plane to the max, the SAEAT AI went to work, and started highlighting all targets that where coming into range, in seconds the HUD was filled with possible targets. Once again the song “Danger Zone” started to play, causing the lieutenant to grin broadly from under his mask. His eyes narrowed and he lowered his head down, in a sort of primal attack position. Not realizing it he started to growl a bit as he posed for the attack. He then pushed his side mounted joystick down as far as he could, causing the plane to jump a bit before it accelerated to its max. Just then the forward elements of both sides started to open fire with their longer range missiles, metallic tubes streaking forward from the fighters of both sides. The lieutenant jerked his larger joystick to the side to dodge one of the incoming missiles. However, the fighter behind him wasn't fast enough and the missile impacted across the fighter’s lowered shielding, sending it up in flames and then a drifting hulk. Slowly the downed fighter spun to the side, lifeless and unable to do anything else.

“All fighters! Break formation and engage at will!” yelled Commander Kaisa over the comm link. Without a second thought the Lieutenant pulled back on the side joystick reducing the fighters speed slightly, only to throw the large joystick to the side. Causing the fighter to pitch to one side, he then slammed the side joystick forward, and once more the fighter jumped forward. The small and nimble fighter gunned forward in its new direction, looking to flank the enemy flight. Soon the rest of the lieutenant’s flight followed in suit.

“WARNING” chripped the AI “Incoming enemy fighters, you are outnumbered 1.5 to 1. Odds of winning are 60% percent.”

“Thanks, what are you facing!?” yelled the lieutenant as he barrel rolled to one side, narrowly dodging debris from a downed ship.

“It seems we are mostly facing a mixed composition of standard fighters, the enemy has a lack of void superiority fighters. However it seems they are also of mix configuration, I am detecting at least three different models of fighter.”

“Shit!” yelled the lieutenant as one of the enemy fighters flew right past him and then swung around, catching him in a chase. With a grunt he forced the side joystick further down and threw the other joystick to the side, pitching his fighter to the side as he attempted to dodge the craft. Soon the two fighters were zipping past wrecks and other debris, as they tried to down the other craft with missiles or their guns. The dogfight was fierce and brutal as the two fighters went at each other’s throats, using every tactic they had been taught and every trick they could think of. The lieutenant ripped off his mask and growled as blood started to drip from his mouth and his nose. One of the explosions had thrown him forward a bit and smack his mask on the console, smacking it so hard that his nose and mouth started to bleed. As he looked at the console he read the few red warning labels.

Warning, no shields
Warning, low ammunition; missiles
Warning, damage; right wing, left engine

Frowning, he paused for a moment and sighed, this was a fight that he was prepared to die in. Leaving his mask off he turned around and looked at the fighter that was behind him. Growling once more he then whispered to himself, “Alright, you shithead, let's get this over with.” With that, the left wing of the fighter kicked out and the maneuvering thrusters of the fighter flared to life as she gunned to the side, starting to swing around. The enemy fighter started to turn as well, and opened up with a burst from their cannons. Some of the rounds missed the fighting, however, a few hitting the lieutenant’s fighter, smashing one of the tails and poking holes in the damaged wing. However the lieutenant's fighter survived and was faster on the turn this time, looping around the enemy fighter and finally getting himself into an advantageous position. Where the lieutenant was able to fire off the last of his missiles into the fighter, one of the missiles was destroyed when it flew into some debris, another was destroyed when it was hit by decoys. However the remaining missiles went in for the kill and impacted across the fighter. With a sigh the lieutenant started to relax a little, as he saw the enemy fighter crumble and explode into a ball of fire. The light of the explosion rolled over his visor as he thought he coughed once more, spattering blood on the ground. Just then there were UV beams that danced across the void and around him, they impacted some of the enemy fighters and caused them to explode.

As his fighter sat there in space, the dark grey prow of a warship slowly glided into view, then it was followed by the familiar red and navy blue strip that ran from top to bottom of the dark grey top. The lieutenant smiled as he saw the Type 254 pickett cruiser move in and started to provide the fighters some support in suppressing the remaining enemy fighters. The Type 254 was then accompanied by a Type 250 heavy cruiser and two destroyers, one of the Type 114 destroyer and the other of the Type 115 destroyer. The heavy cruiser turned their attention towards any sort of enemy warship in range, engaging them while the PD specialist warships continued their assault on the fighters.

Then the wing commander radioed in towards the Huerdean commander. “ Commander Kaisa Tuomola, of the 987th Wing. Enemy Wing has been routed and brutally squashed, rearming and repairing over.”

About to enter Adistia System
PNDV Pikinier
Eradicator-class battleship

"Affirmative, Admiral. Principal Commodore Rot out.", Principal Commodore Met B. Rot answered, before closing the call, making an emphasis on his rank. He rolled his eyes, but then decided to not let his pride get in the way. Looking over his CIC, he waited for the navigation officer to speak.

"Reaching target zone.", the Lieutenant notified him. Rot nodded. "Very good. Prepare for combat. We will drop out right on their flank. Signal the formation leaders, we will go fully offensive on this one.", he told his First Officer. "Yes, Sir.", the man replied. "Entering combat zone in 20." The PA system on the ship blared, announcing the upcoming combat encounter. Rot and the rest of the crew put on their breathing masks - in case of forced depressurization, they would keep them alive.

The local space warped for a split second as the battle group jumped into the system. The main screen in the CIC of the Pikinier updated, showing the tactical situation. The enemy elite ship force, their Exodus Squadrons, were pushing hard against the Huerdaen forces, which had been the first to attack, and attempting to grind them against the veritable 'anvils', the planetary orbitals. The battle group formed up. Along with the Pikinier, Rot had brought two entire flights of Hornets and Anchors, supported by several missile cruisers. Immediately, the ships reported in 'ready for combat'.

Rot pictured the look on the face of the enemy commanders. The Peninsularians had appeared directly on the flank of the squadrons, which were still focusing the Huerdaen fleet, and as such managed to get the first volleys off. Two flights of Hornets with their superheavy spinals weapons would have been bad enough for the enemy, but the Pikinier itself was positioned to open fire immediately as well. The turrets, spinals and missile batteries on the massive battleship and the small destroyers began to spew fire into the heart of the enemy formation.

The first enemy ships started coming apart. While a part of their forces had managed to turn around to face the Peninsularians, they were swiftly focused down. Missile swarms were reduced to scraps by the combined point defense of over two dozen ships. The biggest Exodus ship, was attempting to limp out of immediate danger, but a direct hit from one of the Pikinier's spinals sealed its fate. The rest of the formation began to soon fall apart under the fire. On the zoomed screens, small flashes could be spotted in short order, courtesy of enemy reactors going critical and ships shattering in the void.

"Reform.", Rot ordered as some of the last intact ships of the squadron routed, using their FTL drives to blink away. "Form into a defensive stance; they will be back, possibly with more ships." He tapped a few buttons, configuring the tactical map. "Commodore Dreibürgen, detach your department and move closer to the Huerdaen units. They are still in danger from hammer-and-anvil attacks. Commodore Pressberger, stay with the Pikinier. We will hold this position, in case they try something else."

Landing Operations
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

In orbit, the Huerdaen warships held their posture with the stubborness that had earned them more than a few victories, trading shells and blistering fire that turned all of the local orbit into a charnel house, with broken and disabled ships falling away all around the landing corridor. Huerdaen ships shed armor plating as it was sheared off, shields flashing in defiance even as blasts tore at their hulls, but still the vessels fought on, with controlled, focused fire tearing apart their opposites. They were generally tight-lipped, mostly avoiding the worst of the banter, and leaving the friendly remarks from High Captain Kaisu with a mildly dismissive “I expected better.”

In the landing corridor, SLT Julienne Kasimi kept her eyes closed as the talon continued to shake, wreathed in flame as it plummeted through the atmosphere, surrounded by the broken and blasted pieces of one of the defensive stations. All around the cockpit, alarms and alerts were trying to notify her of burning fragments that were breaking apart on entry into the atmosphere, and every few seconds the Talon would jerk to the side causing her stomach to want to eject its contents onto the back of the pilot's head, directly in front of and below her muzzle.

The entire squadron was on its way to the surface all around them, hiding in the burning debris as they kicked up fire along the lightly armored nose of the gunship on its way down. When they had left the bay they had dragged nets of spare materials with them, dumping them into the atmosphere as cheap, additional chaff to confuse the target systems below, but even with a technology advantage and these tricks, there wasn't a moment of the approach that could be considered relaxing.

The Talon's dive felt like it lasted for hours, despite her cybernetics ticking off the time in freefall before she felt the engines engage and her sister kicked their Talon, 'Twintails', into a powered dive.

"They found us."

Almost immediately, the small gunship slammed her into the side of the tiny cockpit, and her furred hands grasped the control sticks hard as her eyes shot open, picking up the readouts in an instant. They were a few hundred meters higher than she had expected, but the ground fire was as loose as they had estimated. A lot of weapons at this level were manually or radar fired chemical-propelled rounds or missiles, giving them a clear advantage as the Talon could quickly change direction to avoid them. A predictive weapon like that was easily avoided in the nimble talon, something that they trained against often, and were used to countering with quick jerking motions and erratic flight. However, in combat it was never a single weapon.

The pilot in a Talon was in the forward section of the cockpit, laying on their stomach with the display in front of them like on a skidbike. Behind them was the gunner, with only a thin metal sheet to keep from laying directly on the pilot, using the same set of displays in the tiny armored box that was the cockpit. The metal was just padded enough to avoid being considered a torture device, but still required most of the pilot and gunner’s weight be suspended on their stomach. For Julienne and her sister, both Huerdaen Kitsune, the small size of the sheet simply forced Kyanna’s tail to be stuffed up between Julienne’s legs and stuffed behind her between the top of the cockpit and her back. It wasn’t ideal for either of them, but the thought of amputating their beloved tails to serve in the infantry hadn’t even been an option, and her sister had quickly bored of tank combat or Watchman piloting.

Suddenly, ground targets below them filled the display, as crude missile sites and flak nests all tried their luck against the elaborate machine, forcing it to dance and twist across the sky as it shot toward the ground. And all the while, her twin sister's red-furred, white-tipped ears danced across her view, standing upright as her fingers padded over the craft's controls, footpads pressing the rudder controls to spin them between a pair of missiles and into a wild corkscrew, the tail of the craft flying outward for just a moment before it tucked back in behind the nose, pointing their deadly sliver once more into a hard dive toward the dusty landscape.

They had early on earned the name 'Twintails' during flight training, when everyone noticed that the twin Xiscapian-descended girls spent all their time together. It was anything but a clever name, but they had come to own it. They had fought their way to leadership of their wing of Talons through tenacity and teamwork that was hard to match, and their fellows respected them for it, but every drop was playing chicken with death. A little more than a meter on either side of her, she could almost feel the death radiating off the primed, anti-matter rockets they used for killing everything in their way.

She hated it. There was nothing she could do. Where Kyanna lived on the knife's edge, bringing them as close to enemy fire as she could and whooping into the comms from the thrill of it, she could only press her face against the hair sticking up on the back of her sister's head, eyes latched onto the displays that showed all the many different ways people were trying to kill them. Somehow, the feeling of exultant fur against her face was refreshing, comforting, and she took a long, slow breath, an instant before the Talon pulled out of its dive a mere dozen meters above the ground.

Her stomach dropped, rolled, and nearly emptied from the meaneuvers as Kyanna pivoted the craft around a trio of anti-aircraft guns and over top of a bunker. The craft rattled and shook with the thunderous reports from the nose-mounted Hephaestus guns, as heavy fire stitched across a trench line, throwing limbs and pieces of equipment into the air before passing over an armored vehicle that immediately began spewing black smoke. Ahead, a column of heavier vehicles was deploying, but it was now Julienne’s turn.

The fear from before was gone, as the rockets screamed from their pods, individually targeted by a flurry of tapped commands, and a four armored vehicles disappeared in the over-white blasts of antimatter death, leaving craters seemingly far too large for the diminutive rockets. Fire and light flashed across her gaze as targets appeared and were summarily executed, checking off kill after kill as the squadron spiraled outward, like a vortex of death and fire.

Nearby, the shield installation showed active fighting, with a large group of infantry and vehicles facing off against a mere few dozen resisting forces from their local collaborators. The road leading toward the facility was littered with vehicles from the assault and counter-assault, but the defenders were suffering badly from the dogged attrition caused by the Hegemony forces. The Coalition Special forces were forced to fight with scavenged weapons and ammunition from the dead, as their foes stormed their positions time and time again with superior numbers, seemingly immune to significant casualties. Her sister almost banked over to assist, but Julienne saw the hesitation, narrowing her eyes.

“What is it?”

“AAA and AA are still active there. They’re quiet and still, but watching us. It’s a trap. Two of the five batteries are wholly under Hegemony control. Unfortunately, like the shield complexes, those are Exodus systems. We have to wait for a ground assault.”

One of the talons, though, before they could call out to stop them, took off after the complex. In an instant, a bright beam cut the craft in half, without even allowing the crew inside to scream. Julienne swore angrily, but Kyanna jerked the craft awkwardly, as a missile streaked past. Two others nearby weren’t so lucky, as one of the few Ronin-Variant talons erupted into a ball of fire, almost immediately slamming into the ground and scattering burning and half-melted metal across the terrain.

Kyanna’s call-out was to the whole squadron.

“Fixed wing craft, incoming from above! They’re trying to clear us before the dropships land! Stay in the combat zone, and stay low!”

Twintails spun suddenly, lifting the nose skyward as autocannon fire stitched across the sky, finally finding a fast-moving aircraft and shearing it into dozens of pieces as the heavy cannons tore it apart like little more than frayed cloth. Fire and debris rained down as other talons did the same, and the squadron circled together, packed tightly with some looking downward and clearing enemy threats below, while others looked skyward, defending against enemy aircraft.

Screaming in from the horizon, a late flight of Coalition planes came in hot, with their much slower missiles trying to catch the Hegemony planes. Most of them missed, but it dislodged the overhead cover, and as the Hegemony craft turned to engage the Coalition pilots and enact their brutal vengeance, a flight of Fire Foxes came down from above, obliterating the still-reforming Hegemony planes. Even so, in the short moments that the Hegemony had been trading fire with the Coalition pilots, the difference in capability was striking. The Coalition forces, while brave, were badly equipped and provisioned. Nearly a third of the flight had already been destroyed and was lingering over the battlefield in agonizingly slow circles, as a distant formation of Hegemony craft was gathering up, this time including a heavier group of fighters, as well as attack craft for ground assault.

Their preparations were too slow, however, as the Huerdaen dropships were already touching down on the ground, disgorging the heavily armored Imperial Shield as well as their support units. Trenchworks and barbed wire were barely a hindrance to the heavy landing, as the Imperial soldiers took up positions filled with the surprised and broken bodies of their foes. The few remaining anti-air batteries were quickly overrun as the black-armored soldiers surged over them, destroying the weapons and emplacing their own.

Quick use of explosives cleared a section of light buildings, flattening them into nominally even terrain that the Huerdaen immediately began to use as a landing zone for heavier craft, rolling out the first heavy vehicles that began to roll their way immediately toward the flank of the Hegemony attack on the shield generator facility. Behind the Huerdaen, the first of the Fenvarian transports began to touch down as well, depositing their troops atop the blasted and bloodied corpses of the prior defenders.

Shipyard Assault
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

The massive shipyard wasn’t built to take a direct assault, and despite its size, and the hundreds of ships it managed, it was caught off guard and vulnerable. Defensive fire lanced across space, mixing with the Alexonyan attacks on the ships trying to power up in a spiderweb of heartless death. Local ships rolled and burned, incapable of defending themselves against the furious assault, even as the station frantically directed its defenses against the inbound boarding shuttles. The station’s open doors began to close, to seal off access to the station, but weaponsfire inside the bays became clear even outside, as Coalition forces inside fought to allow the landing. Of the five hangars targeted during the assault, three fell quickly into Coalition hands, allowing the Alexonyans to land generally unimpeded. One experienced a catastrophic detonation, destroying that entire part of the station and breaking containment. Debris blasted out into space and fires fed off the air leaking from the shattered shards of the station until it was depleted and the still-attached sections sealed themselves closed, too dangerous to attempt a landing.

The final jammed halfway open, halfway closed. The Coalition forces had been unable to take it, but a final stand had managed to jam a Hegemony shuttle lin the path of the door, blocking it open, though slowly closing. The landers could enter, but it would be into enemy fire, through a much smaller approach. Where the three hangars had fallen, though, the Coalition forces cheered at the arrival of the Alexonyan marines as they disembarked. Desite their cheers, the soldiers were relatively few, and most were wounded or dead. They spanned a dozen races, as was expected of a refugee-born nation, and they looked toward the Alexonyan marines with both hope and uncertainty, knowing that this was but the start of a much larger war for them.

Barricades were being hastily erected at the entrances to the hangar, with ship plating designed to replace damaged sections being painstakingly leaned into place to provide protection at the main entrances and exits. Hegemony soldiers were quickly gathering near the breaches, visible on the shuttle sensors now that they were past the primary station defenses, but they badly outnumbered the beleaguered Coalition forces. The break for the brave group was short, as red-hot fire began to once more flow from the halls into the hangars, with the Hegemony forces surging from multiple directions to try to take back the lost hangars. At the far end of the halls, the Hegemony forces were quickly setting up machine gun positions, pouring fire into the hangar to try to keep the Alexonyan marines from being able to push out into the station proper.

Outside the station, the first few larger vessels were starting to respond to the Alexonyans properly, as their shields and defensive fire came online at full capacity finally, and what had been a slaughter began to turn back into a proper fight. Despite the brutality of the Alexonyan attack, barely a third of the Hegemony ships had been destroyed in dock, with quite a few capital-class ships now cutting moorings with weapons and shields powered, turning to face their attackers with bloodthirsty rage.

Landing Corridor
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

The presence of the Arcadian League Navy didn’t go uncontested for long. What the locals lacked in proper tech, they made up for in sheer numbers and industrial stubbornness. Unable to produce anything to match the old Exodus warships, they instead built big and built tough. As the Huerdaen and Fenvarian forces started touching down on the surface, a large group of Hegemony ships arrived from out-of-system, likely an early-warning station or first-strike position. It was of a similar build to Fitzgerald’s own vessels, built around battlecruisers and heavy cruisers supported by a healthy assortment of supporting vessels, destroyers, and frigates. Formed up and ready, they wasted no time in beginning a burn directly for the Arcadian League.

Missiles blasted free of launch tubes and MAC rounds split the distance between the fleets, followed by semi-primitive energy weapons as the fleets began their opening volleys as expected. Heavyweight warships clashed in violent struggles as Fitzgerald’s fleet moved into position to impose itself between the landing forces and the attackers. It was only then that the Admiral received flash traffic from the ISN formation, informing him of an oddity in the gravitic signatures of the enemy formation. A slight shifting that indicated that not all was as it seemed.

Still, the dogged Admiral held his position, even as the Hegemony ships approached. It wasn’t until they were close enough to focus their close-range armaments on enemy ships that the Hegemony warships revealed their trump card. What had been deploying quietly behind the lead heavy cruiser suddenly kicked forward at an almost suicidal burn, as flight after flight of heavy bombers streaked past the blasted and burned hull of the lead vessel.

Detonations rocked the lead ship even as the strike craft screamed past it, their payloads not even concealed at this range. All of their power was pressed into surviving and getting close enough to release their weapons. Even as the heavy cruiser that had been their protector shuddered and died, power failing across its intimidating frame, the bombers surged forward, their small point-defense weapons picking off anti-strike craft missiles and shields soaking what damage they could. Massive torpedoes were strapped to the bellies of the craft, limited only in how long it took to activate them. Larger and more powerful than the missiles used on the capital ships, they carried hundreds of kilograms of antimatter on board each of them, volatile and utterly destructive. Forced to fly wide and apart to avoid destroying each other when destroyed, many of the small bombers were destroyed before they could properly line up and deploy their weapons.

But even more made it to the launch point, with the heavily-armored torpedoes wrapping themselves in shields powered by the barely-controlled reaction of matter and antimatter in their nose, designed to last just long enough to get to the target ship. With the destroyers and other escorts further back to protect the transports from such an attack, it left Fitzgerald and his heavier warships without adequate protection, as hundreds of the apocalyptic torpedoes sped toward his ships and the bombers began to turn back toward the now partially-revealed carrier that had released them.

Orbital Conflict
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

The arrival of Principal Commodore Rot and his attack craft striking at the Exodus squadrons was something of a shock to the local defenders, and the worst of the squadrons broke off, giving room to avoid being pincered between the two iron-hard fleets, but never fully disengaging. The ships couldn’t match the armor or firepower on equal terms, but they never quit the battlefield, and the reason soon became apparent. From an oblique angle, a shower of missiles appeared bearing down on the Peninsular warships, seemingly out of empty void. It was soon followed by a second, and a third, and the power that began spiking in the area revealed the presence of a semi-distant heavy cruiser, clearly part of the Exodus squadrons. Mass shadows and LIDAR quickly identified more vessels now that they knew where to look, but the situation was far from simple.

The heavyweight missile cruiser’s reactor never dropped, and the constant stream of missiles continued unabated as it created, fired, and recreated more missiles, only to fire them off. Hundreds and thousands poured from the vessel every few second as it stood at a distance, locked down safely behind its silent escorts and picket ships that flitted about the void, daring the Peninsular Commodore to make a move against the heavy vessel. Point defense fire and simpler kinetics arced across the void, determined to wear down their opponent even as the smaller, damaged squadrons that first faced the Peninsular reformed, preparing to strike against the fleet that had so badly wounded them once already. Slowly, however, they drifted away from the landing corridor, trying to draw the Pikinier and her supporting craft away from where the Huerdaen still stubbornly battled against the orbital defenses to hold a secure approach corridor.

Operation Shieldwall
Fenvaria Republic, Army landing zones

Right on the heels of the Huerdean drop ships came the Fenvarian drop ships with barreling rage, screaming like eagles as they dropped down. The dark grey armor plating blending in with the rapidly darkening sky, by the looks of it a storm was coming. A pretty big one by the looks of it. With the drop ships there were two other types of craft that had accompanied them. Fire Fox void superiority fighters, which had the possibility of entering and exiting atmosphere, as well as Condor gunships.

In one of the dropships a pilot looked out the cockpit of the dropship at the end of the formation of craft, with a frown he looked towards the sky which was showing signs of a storm. He clicked on his radio and hailed one of the other dropships. “Eagle five here, Eagle One, I am getting signs of rough weather. Can you confirm?”

There was a pause on the other line before the pilot got a response. “Can confirm, we have reports from FRN that we have rough weather incoming.” with a pause there was a click.

The pilot then turned to the troop bay of the drop ship. “Yo! We got some rough weather inbound, it is going to be rough so prepare your sorry asses for some wet fun.” the pilot then turned around and smiled under his helmet. Meanwhile in the troop bay the troopers started looking at one another and the troopers laughed and smiled a few of them mumbling about how the change of weather was going to make things more interesting.

Once the dropships got into the troposphere of the planet, the side doors of the dropships opened up revealing the full complement of troopers. Who were standing and holding onto hooks above their heads. All of the troopers were in full gear, and had started to recheck their gear as they waited for the chance to hit the dirt. Several of the troopers leaned forward and peered out of the drop ships, watching as they got closer to their objective. It was then that it started to rain, lightly at first. However, the rapid speed of the drop ships made it look like it was raining harder that it was.

In one of the lead dropships, two high sergeants looked at their packs and nodded, they then addressed their respective packs. One of the sergeants then tapped on their gauntlet and a holographic display of the shield complex appeared, mostly focusing on the conflict around the facility.

“Alright ladies and gentlemen, we are here to support the Huerdean forces as they push forward towards the shield complex. If the Hegemony forces are able to re-establish control over that facility we lose our ability to reinforce, resupply and rearm. Coalition Spec Ops groups are on the ground. However they are local forces, they aren't armed like we are. However, they have done a damn good job of throwing the Hegemony into a craze.” The sergeant paused and looked at the troopers who nodded along as they analyzed the battlefield.

“Once we hit the ground, run for the trenches.” started the other sergeant, as they looked at the troopers in the bay as well. They then pointed to the zig-zag line that was near the drop site. “And regroup with Huerdean forces, where we will assault the compound.”

The pilot of the drop ship then turned around and yelled into the bay. “We are approaching the surface! Hang onto your shit!” it was then the drop ship dipped downward slightly. The troopers looked out of the open bay doors and saw the sky now lighting up with AA tracer fire; explosions lit up the sky for a few seconds turning the clouds a lighter shade of grey. Their Condor gunship escorts pitching to the sides and going into a dive bomb formation, heading straight for the surface.

Flying towards the surface, the Condor came down with an unnatural wail. The ships then opened fire, firing all of their cannons, missiles, railguns, and dropped untold amounts of other munitions as they strafed the fortifications in the area of the landing zone. After the gunships peeled off the dropships came next, and landed right behind the frontline, bringing troops and armored vehicles.

“GO GO GO!” yelled the pack leaders as the troopers hopped off their dropships and onto the soil of the planet, which was now turning slightly muddy from the increased rainfall. Bullets whizzed past the troopers as they disembarked. Some of them jumped off the dropships as they were still feet off the ground, using their jump kits to slow their descent to the ground. A few of them would decide to do a little barrel roll at the end. However, once on the ground the troopers surged forward and fired, attempting to suppress the enemy. On the drop ships the heavy machine guns responded back, clattering away. Which was soon followed by the roar of the 90mm chin cannons, wing-mounted rockets and other weapons.

The thuds of IFVs, LTVs, light tanks, MBTs and other armored equipment could be heard, dampening the soft pitter-patter of the troopers as they moved forward. The armored elements of the force then roared to life as the MBTs and light tanks pushed forward and started to provide support for the troopers. It was then followed by the IFVs, which moved forward and started to embark troops under the protective cover of tanks.

A high sergeant landed on the ground with a thud, the puddle of water splashing up a bit and hitting against his boot coverings, they rallied with the rest of their pack and with a grunt he lifted his rifle, then dashing towards the enemy position. As he ran forward he watched as troopers fell to gunfire, and explosions. The screams of dying soldiers pierced the sounds of war; the clatter of automatic fire, explosions, and artillery shells made it hard to hear, however, he pressed on towards the objective.

As he pressed forward he saw another trooper fall face first into the slowly turning muddy ground, it appeared they had stumbled into a small shell crater. The trooper in question, then slowly started to get up and out of the shell crater, so the corporal ran over to the trooper and picked them up by the back of their armor. “MOVE TROOPER! DO YOU DIE IN A DITCH?”

“HELL NO SIR!” responded the trooper, the corporal then lifted the trooper to their feet and they pressed forward.

As troopers moved forward they used their jump kits to dash across the field, making them quick on their toes as they dashed to the side, forward, and back. The high sergeant ran as fast as he could to one of the deeper shell craters, where he then slid down into it and regrouped with the rest of his squad. One of the troopers looked back and nodded towards him.

“Sarge! We got a bunker, to our northeast, it has a few squads of ours pinned down.” reported the corporal

“Seems like they want to die.” commented one trooper with a sly grin, as they slapped in fresh magazine then cycling the bolt of the rifle.

The high sergeant as he peeked over the ridge of the briefly seeing the bunker, it guarded the area and had them pinned down as it sprayed bullets. A few brave but cocky troopers vaulted their cover and made a dash for the bunker, however, several of them greeted in a hail of gunfire. Their shields flickering and being overloaded in the process, leaving them exposed to the second hail of gunfire that killed the exposed troopers. “Hans, do you have the ‘Mallet’?” asked the high sergeant as he then lowered his head into the shell crater.

“Ja, High Sergeant.” The trooper then reached over his shoulder and pulled out what appeared to be a box with a tube attached to it. He then pulled the tube back, extending it. An optic flicked out to the side of the box, then followed by a short barrel and a forward grip.

The High Sergeant nodded and smiled as he then turned to the rest of the squad. “Davis and Garin, get your grenade launchers ready, I want each of you to pop two rounds into the bunker once it is cracked open.”

The two grenadiers nodded and pulled out their grenade launchers, the High Sergeant then turned to the rest of the squad. Alright, once the bunker has been busted open, we rush it.” He then grinned as well. “Bayonets fixed.”

The troopers grinned as they then pulled out their bayonets. These bladed weapons sat around eighteen inches long, where they also had a handguard, pommel, and a lug that fits on the end of the rifle. From the outside they looked like your traditional bladed weapon, however, aside from their look they are incredibly dangerous. As the blade operates like a vibroblade. As the troopers mounted their bayonets to their rifles, Hans climbed to the edge of the crater and leveled his M20 “Mallet” Rocket Launcher, to his side, the two grenadiers.

He then pressed down on the trigger, which was followed by a crack and whine as the rocket was accelerated from the barrel. Soon after leaving the barrel, the rocket roared to life and threw itself at the bunker that sat a distance away. It impacted with a fireball and smoke, blowing in the concrete walls. Killing anyone that was in the radius of the explosion and the shrapnel of concrete. After Hans fired the rocket, the quick thumps of four grenades then filled the air as the grenadiers fired in quick succession into the gap that was created from the rocket. Once the grenadiers fired off their grenades the troopers then quickly vaulted over the edge of the crater and dashed for the opening. Rifles lowered and running as fast, the glint of their bayonets shined in the last of the sun. Once they reached the breach they flooded through it and cut down any defenders that dared to fight back. Quickly they started engaging in close quarters combat, using their rifles, bayonets, claws, and martial arts to overcome those that fought back. To the defender, these soldiers seemed like animals, however well trained, calculated, and ruthless.

Communications between the Cataphract and the rest of the Arcadian fleet are momentarily disrupted; the ship lurches alarmingly as two torpedoes explode too close to the port side for comfort; the battlecruiser takes a third torpedo directly amidships starboard. There’s a sharp jolt even through the inertial dampeners not even a moment of flicker as the bridge switches to auxiliary microfusion power. The display shows the vessel slowly rolling, flashing damage indicators in significant but not ship-threatening numbers.

“Status report!”
“Decks M-1 and O-1 have no power and are partially vented; Decks N-1 to N-3 are vented entirely. Amidships beam capacitors are out, but engineering is reporting the spinal can still fire and our forward fire control directors are undamaged.”

This is confirmed by the steady ‘wunk wunk wunk’ of the main gun opening up again, as an overeager Hegemony cruiser drew in and decelerated to try to claim the skull of the damaged Cataphract; instead, it takes two relativistic slugs to the bow in quick succession and is annihilated by the impact.

Damage reports start coming into the CIC; the Arcadian formation had taken a wallop from the attack, though few of the enemy fighters had survived the furious retaliation of the fleets’ point-defenses. No allied battleships were totally destroyed, though Indomitable had taken four torpedoes to the bow and had staggered backwards out of the battle line; given the venerable warrior’s age, it would probably be scuttled after the conclusion of the mission rather than repaired. The Cataphract had held its own despite a direct hit due to its powerful shielding and tough armor; three older Battlecruisers, large targets in their own rights, had fared less well; 2 disabled, while one had been nearly sheared in two. The other ships had taken fewer hits, proportionally, though, they were significantly more damaged when they did.

Despite the damage, the Arcadian forces press onward, and it becomes apparent in the melee that they had the upper hand over the Hegemony forces in capabilities; despite the anti-matter torpedo blindside, the bloodied-but-not-beaten Arcadians finally throw back the assault as one of their supporting divisions arrives to strike at the Hegemony’s flank, and the counterthrust finally breaks.

At the shipyard, the Alexzonyan forces landing in the three open hangars deploy under fire. The Alexzonyan Marines deploy thermal smoke to obstruct enemy vision and blind IR scopes; converse, the Alexzonyans’ viewfinders adaptively transition to UV and other spectrums, allowing unobstructed views as the Marines return fire on the Hegemony positions. While anti-tank grenades with their fusion warheads would likely have caused excessive damage to the civilian facility, the Alexzonyans were willing to risk the use of fragmenting anti-personnel weapons, and begin firing these in enemy positions from their 40mm launchers. Fortunately, this had been anticipated, as so (unlike normal) the fragmenting and gas grenades formed the bulk of the Alexzonyans’ 40mm loadout. The deciding factor, though, are the 40mm cannon carried by the Marines’ Osprey gunships; hovering just above the hanger deck, the weapons shred enemy positions with devastating effect, being equipped with non-explosive but armor-shredding sabot rounds. Several holes are punched in the frame of the unarmored civilian structure in the course of the landing, but the Alexzonyans and their vacuum-sealed armor are less-than-concerned. In these hangers, the superiority of the Alexzonyans’ weapon systems allows them to push forward against the defenders even in the face of the (hastily) prepared defenses. Depending on the state of the Coalition Marines, they are either ushered onto the landers or kept with the

At the other hangers, chaos erupts. The destroyed hanger has no option at all; the strike group begins to withdraw, and several GRA ships start forward to cover their withdrawal, screening the landers and gunships from the responding enemy ships. Conversely, the strike commander at Hanger 4 orders a landing. The lead Osprey through the door takes a shot from a Hegemony MANPAD, too close for the point-defenses to react; the energy shield catches it instead with a pop; but the impact sends the gunship careening off course and it makes a hard landing, sliding along the ground and kicking up sparks. The next vehicle through is a more traditional lander; it takes a MANPAD shot on the nose, but with thicker armor it shrugs it off. The third vehicle, another gunship, is spared a hit as the Marines from the first Osprey hastily deploy and target the enemy position; the third shot strikes the crashed gunship in retaliation, blowing off the wing and sponson and engulfing the vehicle in a fireball. The entire hanger falls into a chaos of gunfire and smoke as the second Osprey (third vehicle) opens up with its autocannon, finally shredding the MANPAD position. The Alexzonyans pop smoke and begin their operations, but now down several personnel and well behind schedule.

Outside, the Alexzonyan taskforce continues their wanton slaughter of the Hegemony naval forces in dock, Longbow missiles sweeping back to smash vessels as they power up and DALA lasers riddling weapons emplacements and thrusters as they begin to maneuver. Blistering slugfire from the GRA’s capital combatants continues to target enemy capital combatants and cruisers, especially those that were now attempting to put up a fight. The Alexzonyans maneuver about, using their positioning and maneuvering advantages to good effect against still-accelerating enemy forces.

PNDV Pikinier

Sirens blared and the CIC's lights momentarily went out as another energy surge was sent to the point defense batteries. "How many got through on this one?", Rot asked his first officer. The man made a worried hand gesture. "Too many. Our hull can take those impacts, but Pressberger's flight is already reporting mounting damage to their ships. Z-08206 and -7 are having to throttle down their reactors due to instability issues, and our missile cruisers don't have an infinite supply, unlike that frakking thing.", he replied.

The metrics that flashed across Rot's screen seemed to confirm the direction the engagement was going in. "If we don't do something, that bastard's just going to wear us down in a few hours. Weapons, what's the status for the main guns right now?" "Little energy to spare in addition, we're throwing everything else into point defense." Rot nodded grimly. "Alright. Sensors, do we have any data on that enemy cruiser?" "Barely, sir. It's throwing thousands of missiles out every second. Protected by a screen of frigates and the likes. We can make some estimates, but those'll likely be inaccurate."

The Commodore pondered for a moment. "What's our range?" "10 ls, sir. Remnants of other enemy squadrons are holding at 5, 50 degress off the engagement vector. They're just waiting to pounce once we move on that cruiser." Rot focused on the tactical display. After a few seconds, he opened a channel to Schwalbe flight. "Schwalbe, this is the PrinceCom speaking. What's your defensive weapons status?" "Mostly effective, Pikinier.", the voice of Commodore Pressberger. "Do you intend to move us further up?" "Affirmative. How long do you think you can cover the Kommandogruppe against that missile cruiser?" "An hour at most, a little more if we lessen our primary weapons fire." "That'll be good enough."

"This is taking a damned high risk.", the first officer remarked. Rot nodded. "It is, but we need to give ourselves room to get that guy. Those squadrons need to go if we don't want them on our flank." He input a few orders into the communications channel between the Pikinier and the rest of the fleet. Soon enough, the tactical display showed the dots that represented Schwalbe flight starting to move ahead of the Pikinier and her two cruiser escorts, ceasing most of their weapons fire and pouring all power into their defenses instead. The three large ships themselves were turning, and refocusing their attention on the unfortunate remnants of the first enemy force, still in optimal weapons range. Soon, the main guns of the Pikinier started opening up again, intending to deliver the knockout punch.

Shield Complex
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

The Shield generator was nestled in a small cluster of buildings inside a greater military base. It stood out among the structures by both its construction and the open field surrounding it, around a kilometer of open fields now being pelted with rain and heavy wind on all sides, near the very center of the complex. Its perimeter was guarded by a thin fence along the top of which a laser sizzled raindrops into oblivion as they passed through it, with only a single two-lane road piercing this wide open ground. Inside, a small pentagram of advanced AAA nests were the scene of heavy fighting as the Coalition troops desperately tried to hold together their defense of the shield generator, and the Hegemony forces continued to stream forward. The two AAA emplacements near the road were firmly in their hands, while the one further from the Shieldwall forces landing zone was heavily contested and about to fall. Only small groups held each of these emplacements, with the bulk of the Coalition forces struggling inside the shield generator control center itself. All around it, in bland structures made for administration more than combat, Hegemony forces swarmed, firing at any opening available. The only saving grace of the Coalition soldiers was that the Hegemony wished the shield projector as intact as the Coalition troops did, forcing the fight to consist almost entirely of small arms. A single large door on the generator building was the center of the fighting as the Hegemony forces tried again to get close enough to force their way inside as they stormed up the lone road through wind and rain that whipped at loose clothing, making visibility more than a few meters almost impossible, with only the dark looming shadow of the massive shield projector dish vaguely visible through the suddenly dark and violent skies.

The rest of the military complex was in even more chaos, as Shieldwall forces landed directly on top of the existing defenses of the complex, a thin string of legacy trenches quickly filling with water and mud that hadn't been used for apparently years until this sudden incursion, where Hegemony troops had suddenly been station and now struggled through the almost knee-deep mud. The edge of the military base had a small number of defensive tower with manned emplaced guns looking down on the nearby landscape. Clustered around them were perimeter bunkers, as well as a few native AA nests that laced the sky with fire and missile contrails, chasing shadows that danced through the pelting rain.

The edge on which the Shieldwall force made its landing zone had fallen almost immediately, but even as more forces deployed to the ground, the Hegemony forces concentrated around the fallen sector, and enemy heavy artillery began to slam into the landing zone, throwing up mud and water that coated those organizing themselves and moving out. The shimmer of a Huerdaen area shield crackled against the downpour, making the shield's light blue edge clearly visible even to the naked eye as it protectively arced over the troops, stubbornly taking the following enemy fire. A missile barrage followed almost immediately after, cut apart and shattered by the grinding report of the Huerdaen anti-missile systems that protected the landing zone, causing showers of scrapped missile to rain over the facility in which the Imperial Shield began to engage the local infantry, forcing them out of the perimeter buildings, followed soon after by the first of the Goliath-chassis medium tanks as they pushed toward the approach road on which the enemy clustered in their attempt to crack their way into the shield generator facility.

Fenvarian mortars began to fire, protected under the meager-looking shield at the landing zone, and barely heard over the hammering of heavy artillery, rain, and thunder. Their first few rounds slammed into the AAA emplacements around the shield complex, scattering on oddly yellow-orange shield scatter that caused the weapons to explode outward and away from one of the emplacements. The other, closer to the Shieldwall force landing zone, deflected the first few, then a blast near the emplacement became visible for a moment from quite a distance through the rain, and the Fenvarian mortars found their target. A series of detonations signaled the end of the emplacement as its shields failed their first real test in an unknown amount of time, sputtering out to the detriment of the defenders.

The furred force that moved out to try to reinforce the facility, however, was met with a very different fate. With the tracked vehicles crushing the fence as if it wasn't there, and causing the laserwire to sputter out of existence, the Fenvarians surged forward barely a few meters before the first vehicle struck a mine, throwing a track. Another, not quite as lucky, shuddered to a stop as a large charge below it caught it directly below the crew compartment, killing everyone within. Within moments, the disciplined Fenvarian advance stalled as the front line of advancing vehicles slammed into the prepared minefield, disabling, immobilizing, or destroying them.

Some infantry near the vehicle took minor casualties, but the blasts were targeted on the vehicles, leaving the infantry to advance unhindered into the waist high grass. This far out, visibility was so poor that the Fenvarians were unable to clearly make out their objective other than the looming shadow of the shield dish when lighting flashed and cracked in the sky. The distant shapes of the Hegemony vehicles and forces were light only by weapons fire, vaguely giving a direction in which to move as rain cut hard against the furred soldiers with its icy touch, hitting so hard as to make the constant impacts burn with the cold.

The detonating mines, however, drew the attention of the traffic jam of vehicles stuck on the access road, and a number of them turned their turrets, with IFVs firing autocannons wildly into the field, and tanks firing high explosive munitions into the tall grass. Most of the fire was blind and inaccurate, but here and there a shell would land amongst the advancing forces, blasting them into the air or setting off a nearby mine that would tear the brave soldiers apart. One IFV raked fire across at the right range, cutting down a string of a dozen soldiers without even knowing it as it traversed the gun over the field.

Despite the death and losses, though, the Fenvarians moved onward, having made it nearly halfway across the field under the withering fire, and began to be able to make sense of the targets on the road and near the shield dish with their advanced optics. At the same time, Huerdaen armor came into sight of the enemy vehicles, and the first shot slammed into an enemy tank, with the sheer force of impact buckling out the far side of the vehicle's armor as the round exited with almost the same force it entered. Mortar rounds began to fall amongst the infantry on the road using the vehicles for cover, and another shot into the vehicles caused one of the Hegemony tanks to detonate, throwing bodies around it. Now under fire, the Hegemony infantry filled the low, mud-filled ditch near the road as they struggled forward, turning the already soft ground into waist-deep mud as they fought their way forward, trying to finish the job and overwhelm the few defenders remaining in the facility. At the front of the column, the Hegemony troops seemed to have secured their side of the large garage door, and though it had not yet been forced open, time for the Coalition troops within was running out. Another of the AAA nests fell, overlooking the Fenvarian approach, and a yellow-orange laser swept across the field with a thrumming hiss that filled the air with steam even as the water continued to pour down on the advancing forces.

The shot had been over their heads, though if it was by a miscalculation or inability to lower the weapon any further to fire at the advancing infantry had yet to be determined. It had, however, cut off the top of one of the other base buildings, and an unknown number of Hegemony troops that had been holding it died without even screaming as the building burst into flame even as it collapsed, adding black, rancid smoke to the air around the drop zone.

Shipyard Assault
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

As the Ospreys cut down the Hegemony forces defending the initial halls with their Sabot rounds, the maintained atmosphere in the landing docks begins to vent, and several of the Coalition marines are lost as their own protections were nowhere near intact enough to handle the sudden loss of pressure. Some of them have organs pulled out of bullet wounds as the pressure drops. Those that can be saved are ushered into the Alexonyan vessels, but the cheering has died, and looks of grim distrust are shared among the survivors.

Despite this, the landings have been completed almost without incident in the first three landing zones, and the marines are able to move a short distance into the facility, back into pressurized zones where workers and crew are frantically running through halls, trying to stay out of the way of the moving gun battle. On a few occasions, the workers are found gunned down by Hegemony forces as they try to exchange fire with the marines, but no major strongpoints have yet been identified as they move toward the shipyard's control room or engine room. Some workers were pinned between the forces and taken prisoner, but an instance where a Hegemon soldier used the opportunity to bring a live grenade close to the Alexonyans put an end to that. A costly lesson, at a half dozen wounded and one dead, but the Alexzonyans moved more quickly through the shipyard after that.

The fourth landing zone almost immediately comes under renewed assault by the Hegemony forces, even before the Alexonyans are able to recover from taking the hangar. Multiple entry points open, and the hangar fills with enemy fire, not caring the least for spilling the atmosphere of the hangar out into the void. Another missile slams into the side of the surviving Osprey, causing it to sputter, and in its turn to respond, it exposes itself to a second position. All around, the Hegemony forces begin to close in, clustering around burning vehicles and debris as they pin down the marines in the fourth bay. With only the one dropship still active, they were desperately in need of reinforcement or withdrawal, and in danger of being wiped out.

Adistia System, Northeast Gamma Quadrant
Shipyard Battle
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

All around the shipyard, the battle was heating up. Outnumbered by Hegemony ships that were powering up, the Alexzonyans were put into a position where they were forced into a choice. They could withdraw and increase the distance between themselves and their less advanced opponents, but risk allowing the enemy to cut off their landing teams, or hold position and try to eliminate the enemy as fast as they were powering up. Even now, the largest ships were beginning to clear their moorings, with power spikes to weapons and defenses.

Despite the fact the battle hadn't properly begun, the discrepancy in firepower was clear for all to see. Where an Alexzonyan ship would begin to take damage from a relatively small number of hits that would barely slow a Peninsular vessel, the GRA navy was regularly cutting their way through even enemy cruisers, with flashing fire that cored reactors and shut down ships with frightening efficiency. Almost as fast as the mid-sized warships were powering up, they were getting cut back down, and the void around the station was quickly filling with bodies in the cramped, knife-fight arena that had been chosen. Station defenses were barely effective at all as the GRA fleet simply lanced them off the shipyard when they turned to engage, kept far from critical components.

But even with this frozen, soundless bloodbath, the Hegemony forces were gaining ground. A half-dozen ships pushed forward against the GRA group, and all met the same cold fate, but a single GRA ship had been their focus, now lacking full capability of its spinal weapon, and a large section of the hull was damaged with surface functions inoperable. Holes were starting to be poked all across the GRA fleet group, and losses were mounting, leaving the damning choice lingering before the fleet - to stay and suffer the losses or risk allowing their assault teams to be flanked.

This choice was made even more clear as the first Hegemony heavy, a full-size battleship, rammed its way through the wreck of one of their own light cruisers, splitting it in half as it began a full fusillade focusing on Invincible, heavy shells and a few of the less sophisticated energy weapons cutting at the flagship's hull.

Orbital Conflict
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

As the Peninsular fleet displaces to attack the supporting Exodus squadron to avoid being hit on the flank while they deal with the missile cruiser, the Arcadian warships break the Hegemony formation around the Huerdaen landing zone. With the Arcadians taking the hit, and their trump card expended, the fleet is forced to withdraw, trading shots and trying to back away from their bloodied foes. However, their retreat is not without purpose. It puts them at a different angle from the Peninsular fleet, and as their formation shifts, it can be seen the Exodus carrier hidden within the small battle group is already at work re-arming the strike craft that had deployed against the Arcadian fleet. The Hegemony ships, while unwilling to re-engage around the stubborn Arcadian fleet, seem happy to focus their attention on the Peninsular fleet that is moving on its own, away from allied support.

Now in position between three different enemy forces, the Peninsular fleet faces renewed attack. The squadron they were hoping to isolate and destroy turns to attack, with the battered remains of the fleet that had engaged the Arcadians coming after them at angle to take advantage of the confusion, focusing their attention on the smaller Javelin-Class warships that were sheltering behind the cruisers and battleship. No longer able to hide their movements, they begin deploying their strike craft en-masse, with an interception vector that matches the smaller exodus squadron before the Peninsular. At the same time, the Exodus missile cruiser continues to fire, but its fire is now focused on a smaller group intent on overwhelming it - Schwalbe flight. Despite this, the Exodus ships before the Peninsular are still notably suffering under the punishment, unable to engage for long periods of time and forced to jink and dance out of the way of enemy fire, desperately holding the attention of the tougher fleet so that their damage-dealing allies can land a devastating blow, and playing for time.

PNDV Pikinier

"For frak's sake!", Rot cursed as he watched the Arcadian fleet fall back from their main engagement. It was enabling their original opponent to now engaging Rot's units from a badly covered angle, and losses were starting to mount, with his two missile cruisers receiving immediate hits. "This isn't working. Weapons, what's the status on the current engagement?" The weapons officer's hands flew over his console, quickly displaying the enemy units in question on the main screen. "They're fighting a delaying engagement - they turn in, fire a few volleys, and disengage immediately. Repeat that... how do the Terrans say... ad nauseum." The Principal Commodore scoffed, and refocused his attention to his own tactical displays. It was then when he noticed something.

"That Hegemony flotilla... the ones the Arcadians engaged, what's its status now?" The main screen, again, updated, displaying the formation in question, or rather, what was left of it. "Their formation got messed up badly. Their picketts are out of position and the only thing covering that carrier right now are a some lighter ships. Probably going to send their strikers after us any minute now." Rot narrowed his eyes - the formation was cracked open, like an egg. It was obviously relying on the fact that the Pikinier and its escorts could not engage it - yet.

Directing his attention to a number of friendly markers on the map, Rot opened a communication to the battle group's other flight. "Dreibürgen, what's your status?" The voice of Commodore Dreibürgen, commanding officer of Kurzschwert flight, was as steady as ever. "Mostly effective, sir. Your assault has driven the attacking formation further away, and we're currently mopping up their pickets." The Principal Commodore smiled internally. "Good, good. Push your flight up during their next disengagement cycle - keep the pressure on them. Leave some units behind to defend the Huerdaens if you have to, just pin those ships down."

Dreibürgen sounded mildly confused for a moment, though his tone quickly indicated he realized what his commander intended to do. "Affirmative, sir. We'll keep them off your backs. Dreibürgen out." Satisfied for the first time since the enemy missile cruiser had shown itself, Rot started issuing orders himself.

Schlachtnetz Communication; Priority A; Outgoing to allied units

All units, this is PrinceCom Rot speaking. Momentarily, the Command Group consisting of the Pikinier and its escorts will disengage from combat and close the gap towards the remaining Hegemony formation which previously engaged the Arcadians. We have identified a gap in there. If you can, keep up the pressure on them. Prevent them from properly closing it, and that damned carrier will be history soon.

"We're not doing what I think we're doing, are we?", his first officer asked Rot. "Well, I'm afraid we are.", the Principal Commodore responded. "That carrier is bad news, and if we don't want to end up with both waves of missiles and waves of bombers, we're going to have to get rid of it. And it doesn't look like they'll be expecting a superbattleship and two cruisers to come bearing down on them any time soon."

For about a minute, the rythm of engagement continued - the Exodus squadron would engage, fire off a volley or two, and immediately attempt to evade again the counter-fire by powering away. It had been the who-knew-how-many-est cycle of their delaying tactic, but the monotony was soon broken. Instead of giving fire, this time, the massive frames of the Pikinier and its two cruiser escorts, the Speerträger and Neu-Werder, turned away. Seconds later, their massive plasma torch drives lit up, illuminating the void and accelerating the three giants at massive speeds towards their new targets. Guns were being reloaded fully, and missile launchers restocked, all to be unloaded at the unfortunate carrier and its few covering vessels. Their point defenses were being remodulated too - sensors indicated the enemy had already begun launching bombers, and the Command Group would be intercepted on the way.

Their original target however, the beaten remnants of the first Exodus squadron, found no respite - almost immediately, six ships from Dreibürgen's Kurzschwert flight - five destroyers and the cruiser Vorstoss - lunged forth, reenaging them from a side angle, as the Command Group's assault had forced them out of position. While the Pikinier's earlier attack had been aggressive, the newcomers now fully exploited their opportunity, pushing forward relentlessly with the aim of breaking the Exodus squadron once and for all.

Orbital Conflict
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

True to Principal Commodore Rot's expectations, the Exodus carrier lacked the sort of escort to deal with a direct assault by the heavy Peninsular warships. With the bloodied Arcadian fleet blocking retreat their way, and the planet keeping them unable to retreat directly from the Peninsular attack, the vessel immediately began to attempt to withdraw, its conventional craft throwing themselves at the heavy ships in an attempt to slow them down.

But the lighter cruisers had no chance against the armor and guns of the Pikinier and its escorts. While some hits were landed, the outcome was already a foregone conclusion. It succeeded only in buying the Exodus carrier time to come about, burning at full speed away from its escorts. A reactor spike on the vessel indicated FTL transit, but the ship's attempt to flee faltered as a sudden surge in reactor power in the I.M.S. Promise of Pain lit it up like a beacon across the void.

Head poured out of the two ships as the carrier struggled to flee from the ship holding it in place, but it never had the time. With its escorts dispatched, the Pikinier broke through what remained of its defenses and a series of solid impacts silenced nearly a third of the carrier's defenses. Defenseless and unable to flee, the carrier was dismantled in detail by the Peninsular heavies, as the hull shattered into four distinct pieces as one of the big vessels hit the doomed ship's ammo storage, sending the remains tumbling out of orbit across hundreds of kilometers of the protective shielding over the planet. Lightning arced across the surfaces of the shield zones, burning up bodies and bulkheads with impunity as the carrier disappeared into oblivion.

The destruction of the carrier and its group left the Huerdaen and Arcadians completely uncontested over the orbital drop zone, with only a few disabled stations within range of the corridor. Scattered fighters and corvettes struggled to return to friendly fleets, only to find that the Arcadian and Peninsular warships were easily within range. A number powered down weapons and shields, signaling unconditional surrender and begging mercy, while a few tried to valiantly break through the lines toward the missile-spewing heavy cruiser.

With the pincer failed around the Peninsular groups, and their flanking force under attack, the Heavy cruiser began to withdraw, trying to avoid the fate of the carrier, and return under more favorable circumstances, forced to give the allied fleets time to reinforce the Arkasians or perform damage control and recovery unhindered. Nearly two dozen light vessels hung in space, silent and awaiting the fate chosen by their attackers.

Over the drop corridor, the heavy transports began to arrive. First a few, then in increasing numbers as the allied invasion forces moved unopposed through the gap in the shield toward the surface.

Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

Despite their vigor, the Fenvarian offense faltered. The assault left them with an approach across open ground in a downpour, leaving infantry slogging through soft ground and sinking up to the ankle in muck, or jumping over it and out of cover toward the enemy. Vehicles were cut open by enemy fire or disabled by mines, leaving more and more burning wrecks on the field as the Huerdaen looked on in disbelief. Uncounted Fenvarians charged into the field only to meet their demise at the hands of their technologically disadvantaged foes. With their enemies digging into the ditches on either side of the approach road, tracers flashed across the battlefield leaving trails of steam as they cut through the pounding rain. Careless use of a jetpack into the high winds caught more than a few of the determined soldiers off guard, tossing them unexpectedly away from their intended landing zones, and sometimes into other friendly jumping infantry. Not a single soldier fell back, gripping their bayonets and weapons with bloodthirsty fury as they charged.

But not a single soldier successfully crossed the field, either. Within minutes, the Fenvarian advance was broken, leaving the Shield in their positions staring through the obscuring rain toward their enemies. The large enemy grouping of aircraft began to move in on the drop zone, only to find the Huerdaen defenses firmly in place. Heavy fire from the new Gorgon support chassis picked apart the heavier strike bombers attempting runs on the drop zone and heavier landers, while the whirlwind-variants dismantled their fighter cover and defeated enemy missile attacks. Unable to break through, the atmospheric craft fell back in good order, giving up the airspace over the drop zone for the time being. The remaining coalition fighters, unable to return home over now-enemy territory, made emergency landings in their fighters, trying to preserve their integrity and crew for later in the conflict.

The Huerdaen were quick to react, knowing that the enemy air support was no longer an option, the first of their armored groups rolled forward, using their advanced optics to identify and disable enemy vehicles near the approach road to the shield generator facility, pinning the enemy in place. The city-side road had buildings clustered around the checkpoint, but while these were garrisoned, they were quickly dispatched by the Huerdaen advance. While unable to completely close off access, the Shield infantry and armor took up positions to cut off the flow of troops toward the generator facility, leaving those hunkered down in the ditches and struggling to maneuver along the roads without backup. Mortar fire began to rain down, disrupting the advance on the facility and finally buying the outnumbered defenders some room to breathe. While air support of the defenders was as yet not viable due to the enemy-held air defenses, the assault on the control facility had come grinding to a halt. Scattered groups of Hegemony troops could be seen falling back from the ditch and approach road, abandoning gear and vehicles in an attempt to escape encirclement should the invaders push further into the city.

The relative rarity of Huerdaen armor in support of the attack was quickly turning, however, as the heavy landers descended, disgorging heavy equipment for all allied forces, as well as General Zweiten Grades Fridolin Kernnich, the allied supreme ground forces commander. His arrival found a ad-hoc Huerdaen command point with synthetic fabrics strung up between a series of the heavy Rocs, which were used to power the command equipment. Nearby, the heavy armor and infantry elements fought their way through the deepening mud as they fought to deploy their weapons and tools.

His arrival earned a series of salutes, as the Huerdaen straightened their backs and drops hands to their sides formally for an instant before returning to duties and preparations. A rough estimate of the immediate combat zone was visible before him as he settled in, with the Shield local CO meeting him quickly, to indicate their stance. Their small icon showed the Huerdaen presence, with a blued-out Fenvarian symbol indicating the defeated allied units on the field in stark contrast to the yellow-gold of active allies in their positions. A very small, under-strength allied unit still held the shield generator facility, but it was indicated to be out of supplies, and enemy air defenses continued to be in place, with an estimated kill zone indicated extending almost all the way to the landing zone. Huerdaen ground elements had pressed forward, securing the ability to fire on the approach road to the shield facility, but it was a small salient, exposed in unfamiliar territory. Life signs were indicated in estimated amounts, but whether they were civilian or combatant was yet to be confirmed, and they outnumbered the currently deployed allies by orders of magnitude. On one side, an indicator showed that less than half a percentage of expected allied troops were groundside, and that it would take days more before all units were deployed through the diminutive hole in the shield above, where only one heavy lander could descend or ascend through it at once.

It choked their advance and put them at a disadvantage, but the first forces on the dirt had put the enemy in a stalemate as long as that shield facility held. All sides had almost two kilometers of open ground, now known to be full of mines and other defenses accessible from within, including half-buried reinforced bunkers. Some of these had been destroyed by the deceased Fenvarians, but only a small section of the fenced boundary was held by allied forces, meaning that the coalition strike team that held the shield generator within was still in immediate danger should the enemy attack. Communications still had not been established, and the approach road that was the only known path through the minefield was still littered with disabled, destroyed, and active enemy vehicles as well as dug in infantry.

After her quick summary of the situation, the Huerdaen Colonel Nay'Senna gestured to their troop deployments, where the Huerdaen division had only finished deployed. Listed as a Mechanized unit, it had among its number a single Company of Armored in support, and had the Regimental ASS attached. However, her units were intended only to secure the deployment zone, and the Fenvarian disaster had left her units exposed in their salient, where the Kodiac-Chassis were dug into a city with their infantry, vulnerable to enemy counterattack if it came well-provisioned. In addition, the single regiment's ASS would be insufficient should a dedicated air assault be launched, and likely would remain so until additional forces were brought to bear. It was sufficient to consider the location secure for now...but barely.

"Without removing her armor or lowering her faceplate, she gestured to the incoming troops. "We're not where we want to be right now, sir. The Fenvarians....left us in a bad place. How do you want to proceed?"

Kernnich grumbled something approximating a particularly vulgar curse word under his breath. To call the situation 'bad', as the Huerdaen Colonel put it, was putting it lightly. The Fenvarians had squandered their lives instead of applying their remaining forces elsewhere, and as a result, the only current position allowing the Coalition to hold on a little bit longer - namely the Huerdaen salient - was under potential threat. No doubt the enemy was going to muster a counterattack to push it back, and squash the allies' chances of getting to the shield generator for good. Even then, the access road would perhaps not be the only way the enemy could attempt to get troops into the complex.

"Signal the Gravekeeper.", he ordered immediately, indicating a large and wide area on the opposite side of the shield facility. "I want them to saturate that sector immediately. Far enough out that the complex isn't hit, but as dense as they can possibly make it - I don't care if they accidentally splash something else - nothing flies through there and lives, am I clear?"

Turning his attention to the salient, he went over his options. It was only a matter of time until the Coalition troops inside the facility were entirely overwhelmed, even without Hegemony reinforcements. Simply denying the road was not an option - allied units had to reach the shield complex, and time was running out for them to do it. The field, as proven by the Fenvarians' collective demise, was a death sentence to try and advance across. Aerial insertion was not an option either, with two AA positions inside the compound still actively controlled by the enemy - and it was dubious whether they could bombard them into submission in time without risking major damage to the installation itself.

That only left the approach street, now littered with the burning hulls of Hegemony vehicles, as a potential point of access. As much as Kernnich disliked it, it was the obvious - and perhaps only - choice here. Although, he pondered, it would synergize quite well with his plan regarding the salient. Barely ten seconds of consideration passed before he felt forced to make his decision, as with every passing minute, the enemy commanders, whoever they were, were getting closer to shutting the door on the Shieldwall forces.

"Bring up 3rd Company, 407th Regulars.", the order came, referring to the one Federal company that had already landed. "And every other heavy unit we don't need to defend the LZ right now. We're targeting that frakking checkpoint." The General indicated the location of the position, currently protecting the entrance to the approach road.

"Have a Whirlwind move up with them - once it's taken and the access to the road secure, your units, Colonel, will set up blocking positions here and here.", he continued, pointing at two intersections near the head of the salient, figuring any proper counterattack would come that way. "2nd Platoon will stay and assist in repelling any attacks. As for 1st Platoon - they, as well as 2nd, will detach their support squads, which will set up near our current base of fire at the bridgehead. Our SPAA will set up here as well." He indicated the positions at which the Huerdaen Kodiaks were currently set up, denying the Hegenomy land access to the complex.

"1st will use the destroyed vehicles for cover and deploy their electronic warfare drones to scramble enemy targeting; our mortars and Kodiaks too will cover their approach. Mortars with smoke rounds on any complex-side guns as well as the exposed side of the road, for what it's worth, guns on the remaining infantry, tanks and defensive positions on and near the road, but only if - and I can't stress this enough - absolutely certain that they won't endanger the shield installation. The Whirlwind will serve as anti-air for everyone and anti-missile specifically for the assault force.

"They'll breach the complex; their main targets once inside will be the two remaining AA emplacements. Four tanks, as many IFVs and 40 soldiers should be enough to deal with the Hegemony infantry there. Once they are destroyed, air support will be able to come in and turn this around in our favor."

Shield Complex
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

With the Imperial Colonel's faceplate up, it completely obscured her face but when the General was finished, the Huerdaen immediately turned away, her orders unheard from within the heavy Kratos armor. Within moments, a platoon was mounting up to follow the orders, with three squads in their Oni-Variant IFVs tearing their way out of the quickly created hull down positions and heedless of the pounding rain. Their electric engines, powered by powerful reactors protected inside, were impossible to hear over the rain and the grinding of hard steel tracks on soft civilian roads.

Concrete cracked and tore as the supporting Yokai-Variant followed along with the attached squad moving along the sides of the road and the quick-turreted Kodiac-Variant taking up the rear. As the platoon finished moving past, it was almost immediately followed by a second, this time with three more Oni-Variants and two Kodiac-Variants, lacking the massive firepower of the Yokai. With the command post so close to the front, they weren't even out of sight before the infantry disembarked, spreading out along the sides and in front of the vehicle, clearing corners to protect against enemy ambush.

They rolled down the road staggered toward the salient, autocannon turrets watching the forward and side sectors even as the vehicle commanders scanned the nearby buildings using the cupola Akki. It wasn't long after the first of the vehicles passed out of view toward the salient that the sound of aircraft returned, as the Hegemony attempted to bypass the access road. The Coalition soldiers in the one captured AA site struggled to bring their weapon to bear, using unfamiliar systems, but Kernnich had been a step ahead of his enemies even before they knew he was onto their plan. The thunderous rain suddenly seemed tame as the wrath of I.M.S. Gravekeeper tore apart the very air. What had been dark rain shrouding everything from sight became a sudden flash of light and fire, with the rain evaporating in the air from the detonations that shook the very earth. Anti-ship cannons from above tore apart the ground a few dozen meters from the fence line, as the blasts shone an instant of light across the dark shapes of a small number of fast-moving VTOL craft. Skimming the ground, they had angled straight for the facility, only to find a wall of world-shattering death appear before them.

The Succubus-class was capable of seemingly endless sustained fire, putting up enough of a screen to be used in the empty void of space against incoming munitions, and now even with a small fraction of that volume of fire focused along the diminutive fence that was the boundary of the facility, the Hegemony transports had nowhere to go. Rain evaporated mid-air as the detonations created a veritable wall in front of the oncoming craft. The grinding of the heavy vehicle tracks was lost in the endless pounding of detonations as the Hegemony 'Reaver' VTOL vessels disappeared behind dirt thrown up from the sudden saturation fire. Where before a pair of fast-moving flights had been approaching at full throttle, now only agitated mud and dirt filled the air, constantly tossed skyward by the shells, and a single smoking stub-wing spun erratically past the flak wall. It tore through a section of fence before it tumbled across the minefield where the retreating Hegemony regulars dove to the dirt for cover. Three disappeared in the stub-wing's patch, their bodies left shattered by its passage before the wing itself hit a mine, breaking it apart in a spectacular display.

The devastating display was still ongoing as the Huerdaen mechanized platoons first encountered resistance, with Hegemony regulars and their supporting vehicles suffering badly beneath the heavy fire coming from the Huerdaen column. They had only just begun to set up a defensive position when the massive 60mm autocannons tore through steel and concrete alike, shattering makeshift barricades and turning soldiers to red spray against the road and rubble. Hegemony NCOs that had been trying to recover from the initial salient now found their troops unwilling to face a renewed mechanized assault. A single RPG fired from a nearby building's second story, only to be swatted from the air by the lead Oni's antimissile cannon's burst of fire. Moments later, the Yokai fired, leveling the entirety of the structure to a chorus of screams left unheard behind the curtain of Gravekeeper's fire.

Less than two minutes had passed before the Imperial Shield had pushed forward, infantry clearing the nearby buildings with grenades and following close behind. The checkpoint, designed to provide security against infantry or light vehicles, had a single machine gun that stubbornly kept fire on the advancing Huerdaen, only for Oni-Variants to concentrate fire on the small reinforced bunker, their autocannons sustaining fire on it until the structure collapsed in on itself, several long seconds after the gun itself had fallen silent.

What remained of the nearby buildings were quickly garrisoned by Huerdaen, digging in for cover and preparing lethal crossfires on the approaching streets as defined by Kernnich. Near the rear, the Yokai lingered, just out of sight of the approach roads behind a small building, waiting for enemy armor. The Kodiac-variant trundled contentedly forward, turning its guns down the allied side of the access road.

There was an instant when it seemed the very side of the road panicked and began to move, as infantry that had been hunkered down in the ditch saw the four-gun vehicle looking directly at them. The stream of fire from the dual-40mm rotary cannons swept from the near side of the ditch almost all the way to the facility, leaving only death in its wake. The large rounds slammed into bodies and dirt alike, throwing shrapnel and bone fragments in all directions as whole limbs disappeared from a single hit, and the following explosion spraying the remains of the body across the area, no longer recognizable except as incoherent shards of flesh and tendon. The spent casings from the Kodiac filled the air, hissing and sputtering as hot metal twisted through the falling rain.

The city edge near the fence quickly lit up with a series of ATGMs, as four arced toward the Kodiac. The Whirlwind, coming up behind, quickly swatted them from the air, but a tank round from a hull down foe tore out from city edge, tearing straight down the side of Kodiac and throwing the guide wheels away from the vehicle spectacularly. One unlucky Shield who stood too close found their leg crushed as one of the track wheels slammed into them, knocking them to the ground before they could even react. Quickly reversing, the Whirlwind backed away, only for the ominous figure of a Federal CAHT-2 to roll into view. Once more, the enemy ATGMs fired, only for three of them to wildly arc far afield, impacting in the minefield nearby. The last, astonishingly, was about to score a hit on the forward armor as the big tank literally shoved aside the wreck of a Hegemony light armored vehicle, only for the APDS system to swat it aside dismissively. A series of three anti-tank rounds streaked from the city edge as the lead CAHT-2 crossed in front of the more lightly-armored Kodiac, but the shells impacting on the heavy armor ricocheted harmlessly off the forward sloping. Without even stopping, the Peninsular vehicle pushed the light vehicle aside, returning fire on one of the firing positions, directed by the nearby Kodiac's target indicator. The resulting explosion from ammo cooking off was visible temporarily through the wall of flak rounds put down by the Succubus-class overhead as a plume of fire that was soon once more concealed.

As the vehicle continued to advance, smoke fell to obscure their advance from the city side, blocking effective fire from both sides. Intermittently, the immobilized Kodiac would sweep its fire across the field behind the access road, heavy rounds tearing through the smoke and exterminating anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the open. The CAHT-2 continued to plow through and over a number of Hegemony vehicles, with lighter APCs and transport vehicles simply collapsing under the mass. Unable to get a clean shot on the vehicle, the enemy gunners instead tried to target the following SSPz-16Vs. Unable to reasonably target through the rain, smoke, and overhead fire, a number of rounds slammed harmlessly into the already-disabled Hegemony vehicles before a lucky hit dug its way into the side of the rearmost Schützenpanzer. As it ground to a halt, enemy infantry tried to make an attack against it, slinking along the line of destroyed and disabled Hegemony vehicles to try to bring their limited AT weapons close enough to make a decisive strike against the stricken vehicle.

What had been hundreds was now mere dozens, firing across the burning wrecks of vehicles and trying to shoot the nearby Peninsular drones out of the sky with rifle fire even as they ducked behind wrecks. Many lifted their rifles to fire wildly over the tops of disabled vehicles, trying to keep out of sight of their enemies. Multiple times ATGMs struck out from the city, often being annihilated in the wall of fire from the ship overhead, or defeated by defensive fire from the vehicles forcing their way down the access road. However, once lucky missile slipped by, detonating against the side of a MIK-8V Mesre, blowing out its engine and tearing a gaping hole in the side and wounding many of those within. As it ground to a halt, the Whirlwind-Variant turned its guns to the field, blasting a path outward away from the road and detonating the mines in a row until it could get out away from the wrecks to provide some layer of additional anti-missile support. Driving over the blasted path, it came to a stop a few dozen meters from the road, surrounded by minefield. However, the next set of ATGMs to test the defenses found themselves swatted from the sky before they even made it halfway to the access road.

The access road was complete chaos, as clusters of regulars would try to fight the well-equipped Peninsular soldiers, or fled across the open field, risking the wrath of the Kodiac. Some, horrified beyond sanity by what they saw, simply lay cowering in the blood-filled ditch, curling up in disbelief at what occurred before them.

But the enemy wasn't yet done, as the command unit before General Kernnich lit up with notifications, zooming out to show enemy heavy artillery firing, as well as expected trajectories. Most aimed at the approach road and the vulnerable Peninsulars that had now pushed just over halfway to the shield facility, but a few seemed to be aimed at the far side of the facility. Whether this was aimed at some target to the west of the shield facility or due to poor training, there was no indication. However, without dedicated counter-battery, the General would soon find his troops in a difficult position.

Almost immediately, the nearby Huerdaen Gorgons and Whirlwinds turned their gaze skyward, blasting rounds into the sky to try to intercept the incoming rounds, but there was little doubt some of the shells would make it through the defensive fire. The fiery paths cut through the air from the Huerdaen railguns caused distant detonations visible even through the rain as the defensive weapons desperately tried to defeat this next attack, even as the first of the heavy landers began to lift off, making room for the next set of reinforcements to arrive groundside.

Assault team
1st Platoon, 1st - 4th Squad
On the approach road

"Everyone out! Go, go, go!", the commander of the Mesre designated Optio-6-1 yelled into the troop compartment as the ramp at the back of the vehicle opened up, letting the sounds of the ongoing battle be heard that much louder. Of the 10 soldiers in the back of the vehicle, none were dead, but many injured. One of the uninjured troopers, the 2iC of the squad, grabbed the squad leader and began dragging him outside and into cover behind the now-burning vehicle. The three other uninjured followed her lead, each removing one injured soldier from the compartment, with the two remaining ones stumbling outside on their own and quickly being joined by the vehicle's crew.

Now outside, the 2iC and two others quickly assessed the situation while the squad medic, driver and gunner began checking on the wounded. Massive amounts of tactical data streamed over their HUDs, but years of training had taught them to pick out the most important pieces of information. The most obvious one, evidenced by the large cloud of blue in front and to the side of the column, indicated that the other vehicles had fired their countermeasure smokes and were currently repositioning themselves against the incoming infantry. Almost three dozen appeared on the tactical display in the form of little orange dots and outlines, all spotted by drones or vehicle sensors linked to the Federal battlenet.

The damaged SSPz, Optio-3, was blazing away with its secondary weapons in their general direction, the crew obviously afraid that someone would try to attack them with infantry-based AT weapons. The tank had received a lucky hit and was now blocking half of the road with its frame, unable to move, and likely unable to be pushed out of the way as well. Even though it was much lighter than the older tanks, the SSPz B variant still weighed in at almost 90 tons - too much for even something as heavy as a CAHT to just push away. Judging by the battle chatter, one of the crew was currently attempting to fix something in the engine, to at least get it moving again.

'Optio-6, come in. You guys alright?', the voice of the platoon lead reached the 2iC's ears. Getting out of the way of one of the other Mesres, now maneuvering to cover the immobilized tank, she quickly responded. "Optio-6-3 here, 6-1 is out and we got wounded. Three heavy including the Feldwebel, three... not sure yet. What's the situtation?" As if to answer her question, the already comparatively quiet sounds of rifle fire and grenades being thrown were suddenly drowned out completely as the other vehicles let their weapons loose upon the sensor contacts. The distinctive thunk, thunk, thunk of an A-variant's 50mm grenade launcher could be picked out, lobbing its deadly payload into the ditch and behind destroyed vehicles where the Hegemony forces were highlighted.

The other vehicles who did not possess GLs simply resorted to their autocannons. The nearest Mesre-C opened up with its secondary 28mm, turning the carcasses of several armored cars into swiss cheese as the rounds seemed to simply ignore the armor plating. Its rear hatch opened, disgorging its own squad to begin screening the assault force against the enemy infantry. But all of these sounds were almost silent compared to what happened next. The 2iC registered something on the comms channel about 'loading HE', when suddenly a bright red flash followed by a gut-punch of a shockwave lit up the night. The remains of a wrecked Hegemony tank chassis tumbled off the road, the soldiers taking cover behind seemingly eradicated from existence by the 150mm gun of the leading CAHT. However, immediately after, three streaks of flame from what appeared to be rocket launchers, were heading for the tank. Two were swatted away by the active defense system, but the third got through. The soldier's aim was true - or just very lucky -, as the rocket, which would likely have dealt only minor damage, found its mark and squarely hit the gunner's primary sensor array, destroying it completely and temporarily blinding it while the crewman switched to his backup sights.

The disembarked Federal infantry immediately began engaging, though for every soldier shooting at them, there were others distinctly not doing so. However, with countermeasure smoke beginning to obscure even Federal sensors, and with adrenaline pumping through their veins, shots were fired at effectively anything not marked 'friendly'. In the moment, it didn't occur to the all-in-all still relatively inexperienced Regulars that not every shape emerging from behind a car or out of the ditch was doing so to shoot at them, and bodies were beginning to mount. To make matters worse, a warning suddenly began flashing all over the Federals' HUDs and tac displays: Artillery incoming, take cover immediately!

Without so much as thinking, the 2iC and her healthy soldiers grabbed the wounded as well as the vehicle crew and unceremoniously pushed them away from the burning Mesre, into the ditch on the covered side of the road, immediately diving into it themselves. Years of training once again kicked in, and the heavily armored infantry placed themselves on top of their less well protected or injured comrades, shielding them, despite the tank gunner's protests at being half-crushed by a 200 kilogram trooper. Seconds later, artillery shells began impacting all over the area, shaking the ground with the force of a major earthquake, throwing up dirt and hails of deadly shrapnel. The 2iC could feel fragmentation hitting her personal shield and then her armor, but the ASEP served its purpose.

On the road, rounds began impacting uncomfortably close to the vehicles. The attempts by the SSPz crew to get moving again were undone when a nearby detonation blew off the left track, and artillery began rocking the vehicle with its shockwaves. The others were luckier, but the infantry of both sides and tanks at the tip of the spear still bore the brunt of the part of the barrage that had gotten through. Having been busy with pouring fire downrange, the Federals could only dive into cover at the last second, hoping intensely that no shell impacted too close. The leading vehicle, Optio-1, was still firing when two near-misses threw the tank from left to right with their shockwaves, dazing the crew and knocking out the gunner completely. Immediately, another of the vehicles moved up to cover it against the Hegemony infantry, who had probably just waited for a chance to rush the tank...

...but as the last shell detonated, nothing moved among the rubble. The Federal infantry crawled out from under cars and behind wrecked APCs - now counting three injured and one poor sap who had been far too close to a shell impact, marking the first death among the assault squad. However, the Hegemony soldiers had fared much, much worse. Wherever they checked, they found troopers riddled with shrapnel or bullet holes, some holding AT rockets and packets of plastic explosives, but many more having thrown their weapons away. The regulars tried to suppress the natural urge to throw up at the sight; it was no exagerration to say that some of the dead were nothing more than chunky red paste, and many of the soldiers quickly emptied their bowels onto the nearby asphalt at the realization of what many of their enemies had tried to do - surrender.

The 2iC hefted herself off the ground to take stock of her squad. The tank gunner immediately stopped complaining upon witnessing the destruction the artillery had caused - pieces of shrapnel the size of a finger had lodged themselves into the armor plating of the trooper protecting him. Luckily, the powered armor the Federal infantry were known for had done its job admirably, leaving the group largely unharmed by the artillery barrage, though the shock of being bombarded was certainly still in their bones and a feeling of nausea began setting in. Collectively, the four uninjured soldiers opened their belt pockets, retrieving a small capsule each and inserting it into small devices positioned near their necks. Seconds later, the stim cocktails had been administered, washing away any feelings of dizziness and shock and filling them with renewed strength.

When the high grass next to the group began rustling, they were prepared for the worst, but not for four dishevelled figure with their hands raised in the air. Seeing that the Federals had all raised their guns in the expectation of trouble, they began shouting in some language apparently native to the planet. A quick inspection confirmed that they were unarmed, and the 2iC gestured for them to go sit in the ditch, a few meters away from the wounded.

'6-3, come in.', the platoon lead signalled, just as she wanted to call it in. 'We've got three more wounded up here, Optio-3's crew is bailing out and we found some guys alive in the rubble. More are coming out the ditch waving the flag. They're messed up pretty bad. I want you to take them all back to the checkpoint.' As if on queue, the three additional wounded Regulars slid down into the ditch, their capability to keep going ensured only by their own stim cocktails and armor-integrated med-assist. They were soon joined by the three crewmen of the SSPz, who were holding about a dozen Hegemony prisoners. The 2iC at first was confused - they seemed mostly uninjured - but then noticed the state they were in, with all of them shivering and paler than she'd thought a person was capable of being.

"We can still fight, though!", one of the other uninjured Feds protested. "And there's space in Optio-5 now." One of the injured men pulled himself up as well. "We can manage, Unteroffizier." The 2iC quickly took stock of the situation, noting that the other vehicles were already forming up to continue their advance. "6-1, this is 6-3. I'm tasking two of my people to stick with you, they can ride with 5. The rest of us will proceed back to the checkpoint." 'Roger that, 6-3. Just tell them to hurry their asses up, we're not waiting.' With a hand gesture, she selected two of the soldiers, who quickly climbed back onto the road and into the waiting Mesre.

"Alright, let's go.", the 2iC ordered the rest of the group. In total, she had six vehicle crew with their own carbines and decent, if light, protection, and four injured who could still do some fighting. The sixteen prisoners and the five other injured were less well off, but they could at least walk on their own - for now. Sticking to the ditch on the covered side of the road, the group began retreating towards the salient again, watching the field and other wreckage for other Hegemony survivors willing to give up.

Having finally loaded up, and with the injured and prisoners proceeding back, the rest of the vehicles moved into formation once again, now down an IFV and a tank, though. Just in time as well, as the countermeasure smoke began fading away - while it was very effective, it did not stay up for long periods of time, unlike mortar-fired smoke. The blue cloud parted to reveal the vehicles on their charge once again, pushing ever closer to the shield complex.

Command post

"They're pushing again.", an officer reported to Kernnich. "Two vehicles down, and one's reporting difficulties with the gun due to damage from infantry-based AT and the artillery." The General frowned. At least the bombardment hadn't taken as much of a toll as feared, and they were still on the move. Suddenly, something caught his eye. The artillery had primarily targeted the road - and killed many of their own people there in the process - but a number of rounds had gone somewhere completely different and hit the field on the opposite side of the facility. Zooming in, it seemed like nothing worthwhile shooting at was there, except... "Tell orbital support to focus sensors on that area.", he ordered. "Something's not right there. Notify me as soon as you detect anything."

He then turned to arguably his biggest problem now - said enemy heavy artillery. Even the excellent Huerdaen defensive fire was struggling against the barrage, and likely would continue to do so as long as the battery in question wasn't suppressed. That, however, was the issue - judging by sensor readings, the artillery was far out of reach of anything on the ground at the moment, and at such an angle that orbital support couldn't hope to reach it. "I fear we may have to just deal with it for now.", he commented. "Signal back to orbit, I want artillery of our own to be with the next wave, and more units with PD vehicles. For now, we just have to make sure 1st Platoon gets into that complex."

Shield Complex
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

Scans from the overhead warships were quick to reveal the enemy's plan, where three of the pillboxes connected to the shield facility by underground passages had been blasted open. Already, nearly a hundred of the Hegemony regulars had stormed in through these breaches, with more filtering through the rubble as the scanners defined their targets. Almost immediately, the Huerdaen mortar crews repositioned and targeted the areas with incendiary rounds to close off the approaches, but many of the enemy infantry had already gotten past before the rounds hit. Additional, high-explosive rounds followed to scatter those still stuck outside, but the enemy's trick had already reached fruition.

A small group from each pillbox each seemed to be moving much quicker than the rest, as Hegemony shock troops sprinted through the underground halls toward their objectives, augmented by advanced exoskeletons to increase their running speed and stamina, as well as ability to carry weaponry. Their approach was much more rapid than the regulars following, and left an immediate need to accelerate their plans.

When the landing zone made no response to the enemy artillery, the short respite of fire from Hegemony artillery ended with thunderous shockwaves and shrapnel. Without the need to move or reposition or fear retribution, the inbound fire showed no sign of stopping, and focused instead on known positions around the salient and command center, as well as locations near the perimeter fence where the Fenvarians had once massed to launch their doomed strike.

With the shock troops approach and the heavy artillery once more going unchecked, G2G Kernnich had to abandon the idea of capturing the AA emplacements, and the lead CAHT-2 received orders to demolish the nearest of the emplacements, which it did without hesitation even as it drove over the remains of the facility 'gate'. A single round hit near the weapon system, but a cascade of explosions caused the entire center of the building to collapse inward, as the emplacement fell into ruin surprisingly easily. With it destroyed, only limited Hegemony regular presence inside the facility perimeter, the Peninsular infantry were able to quickly gain access to the facility proper. Enemy artillery, while it hammered locations away from the shield facility, no longer fell on the forces there for fear of damaging the pivotal equipment. Their trust, instead, lay on the forces racing below.

Most of the construction was underground, with a disabled checkpoint leading down below in a small, single-story reinforced structure that made up the facility entrance and ringed the primary shield dish. Even with the equipment shut down, the shield system still caused interference in the control systems of nearby drones and intermittently scrambling communication. Still, it wasn't enough to stop the advance, and the Peninsular hurried down into the facility itself.

the structure was wrapped around the mostly-subterranean primary shield generator, providing an armored bowl in which the dish sat facing skyward. Directly beneath it lay the control room, with two ways in on elevated walkways. Entrance from outside and from the pillbox pathways both had to find their way through other parts of the facility, including hurrying past barracks and mess halls where technicians had stayed.

The Peninsular troopers arrived first, their support drones exiting the hallway into the command center's guard room first and deploying around the edges of the two-story square room. Beneath the command center, a bunker had been cracked open and held the bodies of six of Hegemony regulars, as well as a single plainclothes CUP operator, crushed under the rubble. The second floor of the room held a series of defensive positions, with the two exposed walkways to the command center proper being the only access to the control systems. It was designed to dissuade attack, but the surprise of the CUP operators had served them well. Even so, dedicated counter-attacks on the facility had driven them back to this point, where only eleven still breathed, with two critically injured and a wounded medic sustaining them. Only a single operator was still uninjured, but others hurried around to bodies, scrounging weapons and ammo as they expected the next assault, trying to prepare.

They had arrived under cover, so their equipment was taken almost entirely by the local defenders, which left them sorely underequipped to deal with the time it had taken allied reinforcements to arrive. When the PenFed troopers finally arrived, the bloodied unit quickly retreated to the second floor, with one man indicating an entrance on the far side of the room, yelling at the soldier in a local dialect.

The troopers had only a few moments to deploy before a heavily armed-exosuit enhanced Hegemony shock trooper burst through the door, heavy weapon fired from the hip into the reinforcing soldiers within.

Outside, the Hegemony arty focused heavily on the salient garrison, forcing the Huerdaen to take cover and wait, trusting in their defensive systems of their vehicles and armor, as well as training to keep them safe through the constant rain of heavy shells.

Landing Zone
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

As the next of the heavy landers touched down and began disgorging troops, a couple dozen meters from the command center, the Imperial Shield to the north and west edges of the landing zone defense began to get hammered by enemy artillery. All along the western edge of the salient, as well as the northern end of the landing zone, the heavy shells continued to fall, with the thinly-spread Huerdaen defense systems struggling to keep up. Imperial Shield went to ground, sheltering near the Kodiac-Variants and their protective Aegis barriers or deep in the city buildings that were quickly turning to rubble.

The bombardment was so heavy that even protected under an emplace Aegis barrier above them, the command center was rocked and took more than one hit that was dangerously close to threatening the command staff. The heavy lander, shielded and armored, was mostly unaffected, but the deployed and deploying troops were walking into what was quickly becoming a blasted hellscape.

Because of the intensity of the bombardment, the first tank round that slammed into a Gorgon-chassis vehicle coming off the lander was completely unexpected, turning the vehicle into a wreck and halfway blocking the demarcation ramp. The sudden new threat was realized as one of the hull-down Oni-variant vehicles on the northern LZ perimeter tagged first one, then a dozen, and even more armored vehicles rolling around the northern perimeter of the shield facility. A full battalion of Hegemony troops, outnumbering the Shield defenders by almost five to one, had taken advantage of the exposed landing zone and lack of reserves to make a strike on the beachhead itself.

After the enemy had been able to deploy their infantry troops across the minefield unhindered, they had taken advantage of the heavy amount of support and lack of frontline troops to deploy one of their Guard units against the allied forces. Tanks and mechanized units using Exodus-tech weapons and armor were bearing down on the Huerdaen across the northern edge of the facility perimeter. Accurate tank fire struck more of the Huerdaen support units, turning another gorgon-chassis as well as a still-deploying Kodiac-chassis into burning tombs for their crews.

Unable to deploy, the heavy lander closed its massive, armored doors to protect what remained of the artillery and defense guns, but nearly a third had already been knocked out, with a few more damaged. It kept the lander in the only secure LZ, unable to deploy additional troops while the ISN crew inside struggled to contain the vehicle fires and avoid additional damage.

All across the northern edge of the defensive line, the Oni-variants and Yokai-variants struggled to fight against the superior enemy numbers. The heavy autocannons on the Oni-variants were easily turned aside by the forward shielding and armor of enemy tanks that led the advance, succeeding in only revealing their own positions. Several were knocked out, though their fire was effective against the unarmed APCs that followed the tanks, only the rare Yokai-variants had any effect on the heavily armored Exodus-tech tanks that approached.

This, of course, made the far less common vehicles a prime target for the advancing armor, and a shootout between the vehicles became furious, as Kodiac-Variant and Oni-Variant vehicles focused their fire on and around the supporting APCs while using their target designators to identify enemy heavy armor for the Yokai-variants. However, the sheer numbers were winning out. Even using mobile tactics to avoid return fire, the Huerdaen tank destroyers were simply outnumbered. Within minutes, the Hegemony troops deployed from their vehicles among the less clustered buildings north of the Huerdaen line, and infantry firefights punctuated by infantry-AT weapons soon broke out between isolated groups. Huerdaen mortars, previously focused on the pillbox-entrances, now turned north, trying to support the landing zone defense against the exosuit-assisted guard unit that put them under such heavy attack.

Able now to identify the threat, the heavy lander on the pad opened the demarcation ramp again, this time only using the one facing away from the enemy attack to deploy its forces. This provided some protection against fire, but significantly hampered the speed in which new troops could deploy to the battlefield as long as it was under dedicated attack.

The only saving grace of the Huerdaen defenders was the Talon squadron, still lingering in the area, that were able to deploy against this new foe. In the open, their own AA defenses had been able to target and keep the Talons at bay, but as they entered the buildings on the edge of the city, the effectiveness decreased significantly against the nimble craft.

Keeping as close to rooftop level as they could, Twintails and their squadron began hunting the enemy tank units and hammering the supporting infantry, but even this did not stop the enemy advance. Infantry anti-air defense weapons dropped talons intermittently when they fired up from the surface at the low-flying craft, causing one to spiral out of control and detonate spectacularly as its antimatter rockets cooked off all at once. A whole city block was leveled by the detonation, but the Hegemony guard unit was as yet unphased, fighting at brutally short ranges against the stubborn Shield defenders.

"Verdammte Hurensöhne!", Kernnich cursed (quite loudly) and examined the situation. The Guard battalion was pushing hard, having completely ignored the salient from which he had expected any counterattack to target. At least 1st Platoon was now inside the shield complex, and according to reports fighting had just broken out inside the buildings. However, there was nothing that 1st Platoon's tanks and IFVs - of which there were six - to do now, and they were mostly sitting there, twirling their thumbs while the LZ was facing serious danger of being overrun. The same was true for the entire force holding the salient, a sizeable chunk of the troops he currently had on the ground. That would not do.

Noticing an area just north-east of the minefield perimeter, on the southern flank of the Hegemony counterattack, he made his choice. The soldiers inside the shield generator would have to do without reinforcements - it was no use holding the checkpoint if the landing zone would fall. Similarly, having three perfectly operational tanks and as many IFVs out of the action was unacceptable, though he did acknowledge that leaving the Regulars without any vehicles was a bad idea in case anything unexpected occurred.

He turned to the Huerdaen Colonel. "Signal your units. We're abandoning the salient. New orders are as follows: 1st Platoon's tanks and one of the remaining IFVs will fall back across the approach road and head for the LZ. The forces currently at the salient, including the support units of 1st and 2nd Platoon, will join up immediately and move to strike the southern flank of the enemy here." He pointed at an area of buildings just north of which the Guards were attempting to outflank a Huerdaen unit. "Their objective is not to hold, it is to push and push hard. We need to regain at least some initiative if we want to win this fight. No targeting restrictions, they can level every damn building in the city if they need to. The support units will move up behind and provide fire support with mortars and guns. Have orbital pay attention to their advance so they don't get flanked.

"In the mean time, we'll have to keep holding. Notify me soon as our SPGs become available - get half of them lobbing shots at that frakking heavy battery, so they've got other things to worry about than shooting us, the rest is going to be on fire support duty for the frontline."

------
Inside the shield facility control room

The unfortunate first shock trooper to burst through the door only managed to squeeze the trigger once before his body was riddled with bullets from the Federal troopers dispersed within the control room. At this close of a range, even heavier armor became much less effective, especially since both sides were armed with heavy weapons. One such heavy weapon, a SIUW-5a squad support weapon, had hastily been set up on a bipod by one of the Federal machine gunners facing said door, and making anyone standing behind it pay dearly for their mistake. The weapon, a railgun chambered in 15x100mm, was perhaps less of a machine gun and more of a light autocannon with the fire rate of one, allowing the gunner to lock down the corridor. Any soldier who had gone into cover near the sides soon found grenades flying through the doorway - the first two exploding in a hail of deadly shrapnel, but the third one beginning to exude a thick, white cloud of smoke. On the other end of the door, the gunner smiled and switched his helmet's data feed from 'visual' to 'enhanced', quickly punishing another man for thinking the smoke blocked his vision too.

The rest of the squads - all in all, about 30 soldiers in and around the command center - were watching and waiting for the Hegemony units to move in from other directions as well. Fully utilizing the new capabilities provided to the Federal infantry by the Phoenix Domain, they began launching their small personal scout drones. Soon, over three dozen small objects were whirring around the area on autosearch, examining hallways, slipping in and out of vents and slowly allowing the battlenet to form an accurate 3D model of the area while doing it.

As General Kernnich gave Nay'Senna her orders, she didn't even hesitate or look away from the command of her division as she responded.

“No. We aren’t abandoning our only access to our primary objective, and moving under heavy artillery fire. All that's going to do is get people killed and weaken our position."

With her back to him, she spoke over her shoulder to the general. "Deployment from the lander is still ongoing, but it's slow. We don't have enough room to fire own artillery without it being immediately destroyed by enemy fire or counter-battery, so their Captain is keeping what remains of the Gorgons on the lander and is deploying Kodiacs. They're deploying south of the lander, and will be able to move soon. Not a full strength company, but something."

She sighed, turning to look at him and finally lowering her faceplate, to show a woman not yet thirty, rich brown hair tied back in a tight ponytail from eyes so light brown they almost looked almost red.

"With my mortars pointed north, the Hegemony are able to move on the facility again. We lose that, we're all lost. Are your men below enough to hold the...three hundred or so in those tunnels, or do we need to send help?"

That said, she made her way to a nearby table, grabbing her own rifle and signaling to her command staff to follow. "We'll handle the Guard units. You make sure we're not dying for nothing."

The faceplate slammed back into place as she led the nearby Huerdaen out from under the barrier protecting them from enemy fire, trying to work their way through cover to the north to reinforce, and leaving Kernnich in an almost empty command center with the updating battle map.

Barely a block and a half north, the Shield struggled to fight against the oncoming enemy. With enemy tanks keeping pressure forward, the Kodiac-chassis vehicles repeatedly had to withdraw from firing positions, popping smoke and drawing the enemy forward through what remained of the street's buildings. The rubble was full of wounded soldiers as the Huerdaen dragged their crews out of damaged and destroyed vehicles, grimly fighting on as the enemy refused to give them any room to bring down the hammer that was Gravekeeper.

Talons screamed overhead, their distinctive engine noise cutting through the heavy pounding of nearby enemy artillery, the deep thuds of mortar impacts, and the loud cracks of infantry weapons and tank cannons. Just north of the landing zone, six enemy tanks had been disabled and the enemy forced to abandon them as they had driven straight into an ambush as they attempted to pierce the Huerdaen defenses by following a withdrawing Oni through smoke, only to emerge from the smoke into a prepared ambush.

A glyptar emplaced on the second floor of a building's corner tore through the supporting infantry as the second tank appeared, as the Shield used close range infantry-carried HEAT rounds from puppy, cerberus, and akki launchers to gut and disable the enemy tanks. All across the battleground, the line was shifting and moving as the Shield tried to cover gaps in their line, leading their enemies into vulnerable positions with the promise of direct fire on the landing zone, or withdrawing vehicles and punishing them for their aggression.

Still the enemy pushed on, but their advantages were dwindling. As many of their tanks were left disabled as active, and still more were immobile and unable to force their way forward. The Hegemony troops found themselves almost within sight of their goal, with the dead and wounded of both sides in the street, but they could no longer seem to make ground. The longer the push continued, the less effective the Hegemony forces were, as the surviving Kodiac-chassis vehicles began to bring their guns more and more to bear. One street on the eastern flank saw an Oni-Variant with its armored wings deployed to cover advancing infantry, beginning to push around and encircle a group of Hegemony shock troopers who had been left stranded when their APC had been gutted, and now hunkered down with an exposed flank.

All across the line, the Hegemony forces found themselves, despite their initial successes, slowly beginning to lose ground. Many units were without vehicles, and had to begin their withdrawal on foot, trying to gather up around the tanks that had been immobilized toward the rear and were still operational.

Even the clusters of remaining tanks gave up frustrating amounts of ground to avoid having small squads of the power-armored Huerdaen slipping into the ruins to their sides or getting close enough to disable them.

The arrival of the federal armor and regulars on the left flank against the facility fence line was the hammer that broke the advance. Two of the vehicles had been struck by artillery leaving one destroyed and the other disabled in their repositioning under fire, and more than a few of the supporting infantry had been wounded, several taken out of action, but their arrival was enough. With a newly-arrived CAHT-2 facing off against three Hegemony vehicles that had been trying to push forward the front, they found themselves in danger of encirclement and reluctantly withdrew. One of the tanks, unable to stay clear of the federal tank's main gun, was left burning in the street.

As the tanks began to falter, enemy infantry began to withdraw, using their advanced exosuits to cross the ground away from the allied lines in hopes of avoiding harm or capture. Despite the failure of the attack, many were able to retain good order, keeping units together as they withdrew behind dedicated fire. Soon, enemy artillery became focused on the northern flank, shelling the already-ruined buildings to keep anyone from pursuing the retreat, and leaving the group as an active threat to the north. Worse, most of the cover and buildings in the area had been destroyed, meaning that the Huerdaen couldn't push their way north to expand the landing zone.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, the Huerdaen mortars turned back to the makeshift entrances to the shield facility, only to find that nearly six hundred regulars had been able to filter into the tunnels below during the hard battle, threatening to overwhelm the reinforced position within. To make matters worse, the Hegemony air forces were once more lifting off from their air bases, re-armed for their new sorties. They loitered as they gathered for whatever task they now had before them, with more aircraft reaching the skies every minute.

Inside the control room, the Hegemony shock troops were quick to avoid the clear approach paths. Instead, they used their exosuits mobility to quickly change course when they found themselves under fire. Their familiarity with the complex matched that of the maps the drones provided their enemies, and they were quickly able to use their speed and numbers to position themselves on three sides of the command room. They had yet to dedicate an attack against the area, and instead were positioning themselves to all sides of the federal soldiers, trying to cut off any chance of reinforcements.

Despite their familiarity, the Hegemony shock troops lost six of their number to federal shooting, though they made an effort to thoroughly disable drones that they located away from the central control room. The confederate soldiers, mostly wounded and in bad shape, had successfully withdrawn to the control room itself, but were of little help. Scanners from ships above indicated that the Hegemony regulars were starting to deploy in masses outside the doors to the room, as well as an additional group headed further in, trying to bypass the defenses in a possible attempt to safely bet behind the federal position. The greater mass of their forces were not yet on hand, but the initial group of regulars that had breached were imminently reinforcing the troopers, and it was becoming clear that they sought a decisive engagement. The two dozen troopers were supported by significantly more regulars, and they were already working to efficiently remove the drones that left the control room.

Twice, fixed-wing drones had been sent on suicide courses into the room, and the federal armor and drones were able to identify high powered sensor pings that were completed before the small drones could be destroyed, revealing federal positions as the Hegemony troops readied to attack. At any moment the Hegemony forces could begin their assault, and time ticked down to a brutal showdown.

Kernnich sighed heavily - always something, wasn't it. Now, he certainly appreciated the prudence of the Huerdaen's decision not to withdraw her own units. He was confident his platoon - even if there were only thirty of them - could hold out for a significant amount of time and give the enemy more than what they had perhaps bargained for. Nevertheless, the amassing air units were concerning as well. After examining the disposition of his forces, he turned to one of the remaining staff officers to give his orders.

"Order the units at the salient to load up half a dozen squads of infantry to get into the facility immediately. Our support units will smoke off the road to make sure they're safe. 2nd Platoon will detach two squads and make for facility as well - the sooner, the better, before the Hegemony's got aircraft all over us again. The rest of 2nd Platoon will go to ground and secure the sector on the northern edge of the minefield perimeter to avoid anyone cutting off that road. And notify me as soon as our own air units are ready to deploy!"

Another look at the map gave him another idea. "Notify Gravedigger again. As soon as the first wave of aircraft is incoming, direct some fire over their approach, away from our forces of course. I want a low to mid altitude barrage covering this entire sector, with the current fire mission still ongoing, that is." He indicated an area of the map, some distance away from the LZ and any allied forces. "Force them higher and into unfavorable attack vectors so our AA has an easier time."

------
Inside the shield facility

The tension was palpable as the squads reshuffled one by one so as to avoid being in the same dispositions as the enemy had scanned them in. The soldiers had been instructed to save the rest of their drones, and especially to hide the countermeasure ones - as a little surprise for when the enemy finally attacked properly. Stim doses were being injected into bloodstreams, sharpening the senses, calming the nerves and providing the soldiers with a state of concentration and clarity few could hope to achieve without the use of cybernetics. While it wasn't healthy at all, all soldiers carried enough doses to keep this state up for hours and hours on end, though the fact was rarely communicated outside of the Federal ground forces.

Unfortunately, some of their methods had been made impossible to use by the circumstances. Deployment of THF gas was out of the question, for instance - it would not only kill the surviving Coalition operatives, but potentially also render the equipment inside the control room unusable. Although, so the Lieutenant in charge motivated his troopers as they checked their rifles and redirected power to their shields, the Hegemony soldiers waiting to breach would be in for some very nasty surprises.

JLT Wi'Sennig was a low-ranking staff officer, normally used to running numbers and making sure that the mortars and other support units had ammo, so when Kerrnich turned to him, he grimaced. "Sir, most of their vehicles are immobilized. Constant artillery has thrown their tracks or caused them to become partially buried in rubble, I don't think we can move them immediate-"

A voice cut him off from the command console wasting no time to get involved.

"I'll handle that one. I can send my 2nd Company mechanized to make the run. They're almost all mounted in Kodiac-Variants, so they can turn those aegis barriers skyward to take the worst of the bombardment."

Without even barely waiting to take a breath, he continued to the general. "General Kernnich, I am Captain Pinnick of the 32nd-1-4-3rd Ataster Mechanized, my division is almost off the lander. We've got one wreck blocking the door we have to clear so that it can lift off. I've got my initial units spreading out east and southeast, trying to widen this LZ. A lot of my support units got hit coming off the boat, but I still have a cute ASS and a trio of big tubes you can use. My second is hooking into the command interface and it should be available shortly."

As he spoke, a trio of marks on the southeast corner of the LZ on the display appeared, marked in a slightly brighter gold than the others, showing currently full 3-round magazine for the Wasp-Variants as they elevated their guns in preparation of fire orders.

It was just on the far side of a half-collapsed building from them, meaning it would be deafening as soon as the guns fired, but it was their first true artillery option on the field. Even as these came online, the promised second company began rolling past, twenty-five Kodiac-Chassis vehicles consisting of eighteen Kodiac-variants with their aegis barriers rotated skyward to ward off the heavy still pounding artillery strikes as they hurried past, with only three Yokai-variants and two Oni-variants mixed into the group.

Several showed hull scoring from impacting rounds, and one had a hole in the crew compartment, but the vehicles were all mobile, and making for the salient with all due haste. The vehicles, unlike those before that bore only subtle unit markings, displayed a bright white-and-silver fire of the units homed from Ataster that weren't there when the world burned. The twisting flame they bore was proudly emblazoned on the side, their chosen symbol for the beauty of the badly-damaged world still in the middle of rebuilding.

Even as they rolled past, there was a slight slack in artillery fire as some guns likely were repositioning, preparing to open fire on the new moving targets, to try to cut them off from the access road.

The Huerdaen must have recognized it, because the lead Kodiac-Variants immediately gunned their engines, the electric whine reaching a fever pitch as they surged onto the mostly-clear path made by the Peninsular heavies. As they drove, the lead three vehicles came under heavy fire from the Hegemony-side of the access road, but the number of wrecks took the worst of the incoming fire. The Kodiacs, however, kept their guns on their right, strafing the dual-hades cannon mounts across the minefield on the side of the access road, widening their approach path for the units following after. Smoke fell from mortars and nearby support units, trying to help obscure the advance as it rolled down the road, straight into the thunderous death of oncoming artillery.

The yellow icons of the vehicles flashed blue one and off as they registered hits and near misses, but the rush continued forward, even as here and there passengers and crew were marked off as dim blue casualties, or orange wounded/damaged but active. Still, the column pushed forward, trying to push through the fire to reach the facility in time.

Two of the vehicles suddenly flashed blue at once, but it seemed the Huerdaen tactic to widen the path had worked, as the advance slowed through the area, but did not stop. A few infantry lingered around the apparent wrecks, likely helping casualties and wounded as their fellows continued onward over the crushed facility gate and finally out of harm's way.

Shield Complex
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

Inside the shield complex, enemy signatures as identified from orbit were beginning to just stack up around the control room. There were only four entrances, one in each cardinal direction, but three were now clearly surrounded by Hegemony soldiers. The last had a large number of regulars still headed for it.

Nearby, scanners indicated a small group had broken off into one of the side offices, clustering together. Shortly afterward, the feed from the Huerdaen ships above cut out as the enemy employed some level of jamming, impacting either their communication to the ships above, or she ship's ability to see into the facility.

Almost immediately after, smoke grenades tumbled into the lower floor of the room in which the infantrists held, coming from the three directions the Hegemony had already fully secured. At first it was only a few, but soon there was so much smoke they couldn't see how many additional grenades were being thrown.

The smoke itself included shards of metal and was heated into an extremely hot gas that burned flesh on contact. These helped conceal the Hegemony soldiers from sight as the metal shards reflected and confused sensors, and the heat blocked thermal imaging as the smoke quickly filled the bottom floor of the room.

The Coalition soldiers activated the ventilation systems, but the smoke was clearing slowly, as more grenades continued to clatter across the floor. Suddenly, what were grenades turned to the small gliding drones as the quick sensor bursts sought out the infantrist's positions.

As soon as the bursts went off, enemy rifle fire poured from the concealed halls, inaccurately directed toward the defenders, but in volumes that spoke of a dedicated, determined attempt to break into the lower area where they could start to bring their numbers to bear against the heavily outnumbered federal soldiers inside.

Inside the command room itself, the few remaining coalition operators clutched their weapons grimly, seemingly steeling themselves for death and failure.

Control room

As the smoke spread out and the enhanced sensor mode that Federal soldiers usually defaulted to became more or less useless, the platoon lead knew she had to take action. The attempts to reshuffle the defense had been given up as just more sensor drones were being thrown into the room. Now, her three SIUW gunners were facing the hallways that fire was being taken from, reinforced by several infantrists each, holding their own railguns at the ready. The fourth corridor, quiet though it had been, had apparently a large force of Hegemony infantry heading for it. The tempo of their movement indicated that they were regular soldiers, not much of a threat on their own but certainly in large numbers. It had seemed odd to the Lieutenant that said regular force hadn't been the one thrown at their position first, instead of the mixed bunches of shock troops and normal infantry in the other corridors. Nevertheless, she only had three SIUWs, and none of them were pointed at the fourth corridor.

Said entryway was covered, instead, by a comparatively larger number of infantrists, nine to be exact, to somewhat compensate for the absence of one of the automatic support weapons. One of the soldiers, an anti-tank trooper, had repeatedly requested he be allowed to use his missile launcher, but been denied so far, so he had taken up position like the rest, rifle pointed at the hallway, watching and waiting. However, as soon as the smoke spread out, their comms were cut off and rifle fire began pouring out the doorways in earnest, the Federals knew that the awaited attack was coming. A simple ping by the platoon leader confirmed what many were already doing - the Hegemony forces had picked a bad method to conceal themselves.

All of a sudden, the rifle reports seemed to be drowned out by a shrill screeching of some sort, starting at one of the infantrists and almost instantly spreading to all thirty. To say the noise was deafening would be putting it mildly; the Coalition soldiers, already having gone through so much, dropped their weapons and clutched the sides of their heads in immense pain for a few moments, before all perception of sound faded from their minds and all they were left with was a painful feeling in their teeth, blood soon dripping from their ear canals, courtesy of eardrums ripped apart by the sound. The Federal soldiers, protected by their helmets, ignored the sound and instead pressured their triggers in anticipation.

Where once nothing but white smoke had been, suddenly malformed orange shapes appeared on Federal HUDs, closing steadily like monsters in some horror movie. The readings weren't exact, but that mattered little as soldiers rose above their cover and began emptying their weapons at the contacts, some reaching to their belts and throwing grenades in the way of the charging Hegemony soldiers. At first, their accuracy suffered through the return fire coming from the corridor and fragmentation grenades messing with their balance, but this changed when the squad support gunners, having taken a split second to assess the situation, unleashed their weapons.

The SIUW-5a squad support weapon was perhaps the best automatic weapon design created by the CFP, though one might not appreciate it at first glance. The large railgun was heavy and unwieldy, and its enormous appetite mandated the gunner and his assistant both wear massive ammunition backpacks from which to continuously feed it. But the sheer power of the weapon made up for all of its shortcomings - chambered in the venerable 15x100mm railgun caliber originally used for the Federals' SIK-1's predecessor, one could have assumed its rate of fire to be akin to a light autocannon, chugging along at a few hundred rounds per minute. But when the gunners squeezed their triggers, the already infernal soundscape was enriched by a continuous noise that some likened to a saw cutting armor plates.

Leveraging their weapons' frankly unreasonable amount of rounds per second, the three gunners began spraying the hallways left to right and right to left, not letting off the triggers once and not aiming at particular targets, simply keeping their crosshairs at chest to stomach height. The SIUWs had a quick-exchange barrel for this exact reason, with the assistant gunners already standing by to perform a replacement quickly, simply working the mechanism, pulling the white-hot barrels out with gloved hands, and slotting in a new one, tapping their comrades to resume their 'symphony' of death.

The fourth corridor, however, bore a nasty surprise for the Federals. The contacts that had been assumed as Hegemony regulars suddenly started moving at much faster speeds that should have been possible. Surprised, the soldiers immediatly began firing as fast as they could - the enemy's distraction had mostly worked, despite the Federals' massively improved reaction speed and the combat stims pumping through their veins. 10x70mm rounds began filling the corridor, though even nine SIKs didn't have the volume of fire of a single 5a. The threat update immediately had warnings flashing all over the other Feds' tac HUDs, with the new arrivals being repeatedly tagged as priority targets. One of the SIUW gunners ceased firing, lifting his heavy gun and looking for a new position to cover the vulnerable point, though with the speed of the shock troopers, there wouldn't be enough time to set up. Instead, the gunner placed the weapon at his hip and steadied himself, roughly aiming it at the doorway. His assistant, realizing what he wanted to do, moved to help him with the expected, insance recoil.

The anti-tank gunner, too, came to his own conclusion the moment he saw the orange shapes charging at full speed. With a very loud exclamation of 'Scheiss drauf!', he lifted his large PAR launcher to his shoulder, setting it for dumbfire. The PAR, while intended for use against vehicles, had been used a few times on power armor before, against the Welded, primarily. The shaped explosive filler was usually regarded as a little weak, and the massive amount of penetrator mechanisms added to the missiles made them much less effective than an actual anti-personnel one, but they nonetheless were able to serve the role effectively... if a direct impact was achieved and the double tandem charge was allowed to activate. Lining up his shot with practiced hands, and before anyone else could tell him to stop, the soldier squeezed the trigger, igniting the rocket motor and sending the 100mm projectile shooting down the corridor...

Command center

When the communications with the infantry inside the control center were cut off, Kennrich inhaled deeply. Now it was down to the troopers of the 407th to make a difference, though he did not linger too long on the thought as the last of the Huerdaen units crossed into the shield facility. "Excellent work, Captain.", the General told the Huerdaen officer. "See if you can link your defenses with our existing blocking positions at the salient to your south." Now the 2nd Platoon was next to cross the stretch of road, though he worried less about them - as once famously stated by a Federal soldier on a news broadcast, it mattered little to them whether the rain was water or shrapnel.

"Sir, carrier's reporting that our aircraft are ready to deploy. Loadouts are as requested.", the Huerdaen junior LT told him. Finally, some proper good news, Kennrich thought to himself. The enemy aircraft were still amassing, and he hated not knowing what they were planning. "We'll need air cover as quickly as they can provide. Pay attention to the salient in particular. Ground attackers will need to loiter and wait in reserve in case we're facing another attack." He then turned his attention to the few artillery pieces the new drop had given him, and recalled the warning of the Huerdaen Colonel about lacking room to properly avoid counterbattery. After a moment of consideration, he decided to heed her advice. "Let's keep the guns in reserve as well, for now."

The Arkasian Invincible opens fire on the looming battleship, sending three quick snapshots of murderous c-fractional flechettes from it’s spinal gun at the Hegemony heavy along with a fusillade of neutron beams. At this range, though, even the Hegemony’s relatively incapable ships were dangerous, and the shields of the flagship flare dangerously before flaring indicators emerge across the hull; impact points for the incoming weapons fire. A nacelle out of action… make that two. This enemy was smart, going for the exposed propulsion pods. A dozen minor hits along the hull; mostly caught by the armor sheathing, but with a few compartments venting and sealed off. It was only by virtue of grossly superior energy economy and technology that the Arkasian battleship was still standing, after the fusilade, and it still staggers out of formation even as the enemy ship fares much, much worse, its leading edge… in fact it’s entire front half… a wrecked mass of twisted composites.

[We can’t stay at this range,] acknowledges Admiral York. Even through the BattleNet, you could practically hear his teeth grit. [We’re squandering our edge here. Open the range out, lets not let these bastards rack up any more easy hits on us. Maneuver for a primary killzone…] He thinks. [There.] His marker is right where the enemy would go if they were to try to flank the invading forces on the shipyard.

Speaking of the forces on the shipyard, the situation in Bay 4 remains the most critical. Arkasian Marines hold tight to their cover, answering the push by the Hegemony soldiery with bursts of rifle fire, grenades, and a combination of sheer tenacity and a stiff upper lip. Forces from Bay 3 were maneuvering quickly to come in and flank the attackers from behind… but they had to hold out until then.

With the Arcadians having thrown back the Hegemony push, and their pincer defeated, Fitzgerald moves his ships briefly into the corridor above the shield generator site. With the situation planetside confused (something about the entire Thalduhm contingent having been wiped out), the NEGL Forces launch their own QRF towards the landing zone. While not the proper hammer of the League’s forces intended to take the first world of the Shieldwall, the landers carried a mix of troops. Frankly, it was whatever was being carried by Fitzgerald’s heavies that were still in launchable condition. The first was a company of light mechanized from the 187th Infantry, a mix of Byzantines, Arcadians, and other humans. The second company, from the 315th, was Kinsari; unblooded, untested, and (given a choice) not the forces the Leaguers would have preferred to commit first. The last was a platoon of Arcadian Helljumpers; not NEGL force, the Helljumpers were an elite airborne infantry unit from the Arcadian local military, whose launch was announced with a salvo of drop pods. Equipped with Arcadian gear rather than NEGL, the Helljumpers would certainly have the least capable equipment of the coalition troops… but their experience, veterans of the Scythian Wars almost all of them, might make all the difference when the cards were down.

“Auxiliaries coming down the well for you, along with a platoon of my guys,” Fitzgerald reported, sending the message to General Kernnich as command of the reinforcements passed off to the planetside CO. “Not a lot of them, but it’s something. The primary landing forces should be following as soon as we can get them into position. My command is going to bail the Arkasians out of the ass-deep alligators they’ve managed to stir up.” True to his word, the Arcadian Admiral takes his unit quickly towards the fight near the shipyard.

“Admiral York! I thought they trained you lot not to get into knife-fights with enemy groups three times your size!”

[Details, details,] replies York’s simulacrum. [There’s not three times as many of them anymore.]

“I can go back to guarding the LZ if you want,” the Arcadian offers. He smirks to himself.

[Your assistance here is appreciated,] replies York after a moment. [... I owe you a drink after this one.]

“Damn straight you do. I see that killbox; if the Hedges do too, they’ll probably try to skirt it starward and come up on your flank; if they come voidward you’ll pin them against the planet. If they try the starward route, I’ll sock ‘em clean in the jaw. If not, we’ll push around them and we can pincer them against their own dockyards. And if they actually missed that killbox… you won’t need my help anyway.”

[That’s so. Good plan, Admiral. We’ll make it so.]

“I know it is, and you better.” Fitzgerald snorts, and starts issuing the relevant commands to his forces. The Arkasians might fund this show, he notes to himself. But it would never have gotten on the road without us. Hopefully after this little mess, at least one of them will remember that.

Adistia System, Northeast Gamma Quadrant
Shipyard Assault
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

The fire from the Invincible cuts through the Hegemony battleship, with c-frac projectiles tearing through the ship and exiting out the rear of the vessel trailed by debris of all kinds as the beams tear apart the front of the vessel. Within moments all power readings from the ship are no longer present, and the ship's debris and corpse tumbles out away from the station heading for the edge of the system at an almost peaceful pace. A number of what seem to be escape pods jettison, but many don't escape the ship's own debris field and tumbling wreck, tiny lights of power that appear and disappear almost as quickly.

Two more battleships begin to right themselves and direct their attention for the Arkasian fleet, but without the cover of the prior wrecks or the surprise of such a large ship being in play, they quickly face a similar fate, dismantled and defeated in short order by Arkasian weapons. The speed at which now three of their heavier ships were dispatched began to visibly cause the enemy ships to waver. Fire support from Huerdaen vessels now at the landing corridor is added to the fire of their Arcadian, Arkasian, and Peninsular allies making it effectively impossible for a Hegemony ship to launch and join the fight. Of those ships still at the docks, they seemed now to be prioritizing engines over weapons, and many jumped to FTL almost as soon as leaving the docks. Their fleet, such as it was, simply hadn't been prepared for the sort of damage it had endured. One ship remained, using the station for cover as it continued to shell empty docking ports used by the larger vessels in an attempt to keep the station from being useful to the Arkasians, but more and more the enemy ships were simply leaving the combat zone as quickly as they could, with fewer and fewer still in the docks, and many of those disabled already from Arkasian fire.

Inside the shipyard, landing zone 4 continues to suffer from heavy enemy fire. Clustered around downed gunships, shuttles, and other local vessels, the marines are taking fire from three sides with only the void behind them. Intermittently around the bay firing slits have been opened, revealing guard rooms with reinforced walls facing into the hangar from which the hegemony crew fire back. However, a lot of the fire is less than effective.

Even as the group from LZ3 moves toward LZ4 to provide relief, it is becoming more and more clear that the number of Hegemony regulars on the station was never that great. Most of the troops wear little more than EVA gear and carry substandard weapons. The marines are barely halfway to the bridge before whole halls and chokepoints are simply empty. The team from LZ1 stumbles over a guard room full of Hegemony crew, with only a pair of regulars, all of which have already thrown down their weapons, begging for mercy.

Within minutes of their fleet abandoning the shipyard, the station begins to power down its weapons, signaling its surrender on open channels and begging for the coalition fleet to stop the lingering Hegemony ship from destroying them. The light cruiser, in return, starts to turn its fire to more critical systems, targeting reactor control and command points, intent on leaving nothing behind.

Landing Zone
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

As the last of the Huerdaen troops roll off the Grizzly-class lander, it starts to warm up its engines for lift-off, making sure to be able to clear for the NEGL reinforcements. This, however, seems to be a signal for the Hegemony air forces. Recent events had given them time to gather into several large flights, easily outnumbering the allied air forces, though prior contact had shown that this advantage would not last long.

Despite this grim expectation, the flights moved in, keeping high altitude to stay away from flak wall of the ever-present Gravekeeper above. Using their altitude advantage and numbers, the Hegemony air group advanced hard for the descending dropships, as nearby ground fire shot up to try to support their aircraft. At the altitude they chose to fight, their own less advanced AA systems still had the ability to target, and was focusing on the NEGL landers, scoring several hits as they were forced to fly through landing corridor with Gravekeeper's fire focused on keeping the enemy aircraft at bay.

The drop pods were particularly vulnerable to the nearby ground fire, as AAA systems in the area soon targeted them on their powered approach. Their only saving grace was the allied anti-missile cover in the area and the short engagement time, but even so two of the pods suffered direct hits and were utterly destroyed as they passed through the enemy fire zone. Another was struck by shrapnel from the battle that was ongoing around them, throwing it into an uncontrolled spin away from the drop zone.

During the approach, a wing of the Hegemony aircraft punched through the air defenses, landing multiple strikes across three of the landers on their way down, causing one of them to burst into flames, spiraling out of control in an uncontrolled descent. The other two suffered less significant damage, though their troop bays both showed damage and they were visibly struggling to remain with the rest of the landing group for mutual protection as their controlled approach became more akin to a crash landing. The true purpose of the strike, however, was not clear until the Air Guard showed themselves. Lingering toward the back of the formation until the allied air forces were fully engaged, they suddenly hit their boosters, angling downward toward the Huerdaen lander that was just now starting to lift off from the landing zone. Larger and heavier than the NEGL landers, it was slower to move and occupied the entire LZ. Destroying or disabling it would significantly hamper further deployment of troops. As soon as they began their dive, the other Hegemony forces began their withdrawal, still suffering horrible casualties as they strained their aircraft to the limit, several of them pushing them too far and causing the vehicles to break up and go down due to damage sustained during fighting.

General Kastenin smiled as her display updated on the invading lander, with probability of bringing it down calculated up as high as 80%. But her smile began to slip, slowly, as the ship began to roll, even before suffering any impacts. Somehow, the landing ship's captain had identified the plan, using the launch thrusters at full capacity even as they turned the ship's defenses away from the inbound missiles. Probability of a kill on the display upgraded to 97%, but her smile had fallen from her face as she understood what was happening.

Multiple impacts struck the heavily armored ship as the Air Guards turned back, and the lander didn't even have the remaining power to struggle. It was, however, too late. Using the massive lift thrusters on the bottom of the ship, they had successfully pushed themselves clear of the landing zone before the weapons impacted.

The missiles struck almost directly over the eastern defensive line around the LZ, and a series of impacts immediately sheared off one of the primary lift thrusters. From below, the ship seemed to still be mostly intact, but the forces above could already see the catastrophic damage as the internal bays were laid bare. Several decks down were cracked open clearly, and as the ship suffered from power fluctuations, the lift thrusters sputtered unevenly, shearing the ship apart into a dozen pieces, all of which tumbled across the nearby city. Thousands of tons of armor plating bulldozed whole city blocks as the debris skipped across the ground, twisting metal and crushing everything below it. The noise was earth-shattering, drowning out even the sound of the rain and other weapons-fire. Some casualties along the eastern edge of their defenses were reported, but the ship's crew had largely managed to complete their goal, leaving the majority of their own forces intact and the LZ completely clear of debris.

Next to G2G Kernnich, Captain Pinnick swore under his breath, having marched in sometime during the beginning of the air battle. Mud and worse plastered to his armor up to his waist, and more than a little had splashed up on his arms and chestpiece as he made his way here. He offered no explanation for his appearance, and instead had his attention on the company he had dispatched into the shield facility. During the entire air battle, none of the AA posts had fired from the shield facility for either side. Possibly because of this, not a single one of the Air Guards aircraft had been downed, and it left a lingering question.

It was only when the Huerdaen IFVs were slowing to disgorge their troops that the answer presented itself. While the Peninsular infantry held the control room, Hegemony forces had bypassed them, hurrying as quickly as they could to the other structures, taking up positions to try to cut off reinforcements. Their numbers were relatively few, but their attack was unexpected, and infantry-fired rocket gutted a KvK before the Huerdaen had time to respond. The following Oni swiveled its gun and devastated the firing position, but there was no evidence of whether the attacker had been slain. All around, small arms opened up on the IFVs, trying in vain to slow their advance to the main structure and the path down.

Their attempts, however, were found wanting as the Huerdaen Mechanized deployed around their target position, disgorging troops into the structure in any entrance they could find or create, and using that structure as a firebase. A brutal firefight quickly erupted between the Shield in the central structure and the Hegemony troops as four of the platoons fought their way toward the control room, with the lead units breaking through walls and storming through halls at a near sprint to relieve their allies.

The Hegemony ambush, however, was short-lived as the drop pods impacted all around the facility. Not expecting to drop into an active firefight, a number of the Arcadians took hits immediately, though the veterans were quick to get under cover, keeping casualties to a minimum. It opened another flank on the Hegemony forces, especially as two of the pods smashed through the upper floors of one of the structures they were defending. Opposing soldiers exchanged fire from a handful of meters away, tearing apart what had once been an office structure and utterly destroying local equipment and furniture as they did so. There was no hard cover in the structure, so the fighting inside was a brutal running battle where a wall only provided protection for a few moments.

Facing enemies suddenly deployed behind, beside, and in front of them, the Hegemony troops started to falter, with some beginning to fire on other friendly positions as they lost track of which position was friend or foe.

Fight for the Control Room
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

The rocket streaked through the smoke, and the shock troopers earned their commendations as several of the leaders managed to avoid being struck as they dove out of the way or to the ground, causing the rocket to impact on the ground near the rear of the group. Shrapnel and weapon fragments tore through a dozen of the shock troopers toward the rear, and the advance was slowed, but the troopers were once again up and running within moments.

The side halls, suffering under the heavy fire of the SIUWs, were nightmarish scenes of blood, body parts, and a few screaming wounded. Some of the Hegemony troops continued to try to advance, but results were even less effective as before, limiting approach from the side halls. The front entrance, previously blocked by infantrists, had a respite as the Penin tried to respond to the attack from the rear, and their attack surged forward, finally entering the room. At close range, several of the regulars had high powered weapons, frantically surging forward to try to engage the infantrists and overwhelm them at close range. One of the infantrists found himself face-to-face with four regulars each carrying large-bore shoulder-fired guns. They barely stopped to brace before they fired into the infantrist's chest, HEAT rounds tearing through the armor and almost immediately killing the federal soldier.

In the smoke, the regulars often seemed to stumble around disoriented, but some managed to continue to fight. It was the final approach where the breakthrough became a serious threat, though, as one of the shock troopers used their exoskeleton armor to leap up onto the walkway above, firing an energy weapon point-blank into a Peninsular soldier. The blast disintegrated the chestpiece, arm, and shoulder of the soldier, leaving half their torso gone, with ribs exposed and intestines tumbling from the open wound.

The shock trooper turned for the door to the control room and tearing the door free before they were gunned down, leaving a spray of blood across the armored slats and the interior of the room. Both the front and rear halls were starting to empty into the room, with the enemy now close enough to provide a serious threat to the Penin defenders.

Shield control room

The situation, which the Federals had had admittedly little grasp on anyway, became nothing short of chaotic with the breakthrough in the two corridors. The fight had become entirely too fair for the liking of the Federal infantry: At short ranges like this and with the weapons used, neither side's armor would do them any good for protection. Luckily, the smoke was still serving to disorient many of the Hegemony soldiers, while the Peninsularian infantrists had no such issues - their sensors allowed them to keep a good degree of situational awareness, showing the enemy as orange blobs now spilling out of the corridors.

The primary target, for the advancing shock troopers, had been the SIUW gunner now standing upright, helped by his assistant gunner. As the first targets entered his field of view, he simply pushed down the trigger and the cannon began to roar, saturating the entrance with 15mm rounds, catching out several soldiers until he was struck in the chest from the hallway, shearing straight through the armor plate. The man collapsed directly onto his assistant, who reacted immediately, catching the dead soldier and hefting him behind a nearby piece of cover. A quick-release separated the ammunition feed from the man's armor, and the assistant gunner did her best to get the SIUW back into the fight, gunning down several confused Hegemony regulars within her sightline.

The Federals did still hold an advantage, not only due to their genetically enhanced capabilities and the combat drugs coursing through their veins, but the small objects buzzing around each soldier, unnoticed in the middle of the fight. The remaining reconnaissance drones were ordered by their troopers to go into attack mode - which meant, they did their best to repeatedly fly into the faceplates of Hegemony soldiers, shining their high-powered measuring lasers straight into eyes and generally attempting to distract the attackers. However, the Federals' trump card was yet to be pulled.

With a single command, one additional drone was deployed from every soldier's backplate-mounted drone bay. Visually, they were similar to their recon cousins, but served a very different function, as became immediately clear when the first Hegemony soldiers were blinded by expertly scattered beams of low-energy lasers. The Domain technology within the drones allowed each to target up to four enemy personnels' visual sensors and faceplates, filling them with bright green glows and utterly obscuring what was going on, leaving the targeted infantry blind.

The commanding Leftenant, still standing despite a visible injury, signalled to her remaining troopers to push back as several of the small flying objects began flooding the general vicinity with all manner of electromagnetic radiation, designed to further disrupt the enemy, jamming any radiocommunication channels the Hegemony troopers might have been operating and effecting other sensor systems as well - apart from the Peninsularian soldiers', which were constantly filtering out the madness spewed by the drones. With the enemy on the back foot, the infantry jumped on the opportunity to regain the initiative in the fight, intent on pushing the Hegemony forces out the room once again.

Reinforced by the Arcadian contingent, the Arkasians and their allies together finish breaking the back of the Hegemony forces around the shipyard. The shooting eventually stops when it becomes clear that no more Hegemony ships would launch; if they were crewed, they kept their reactors dark out of fear of annihilation.

On the shipyard itself, the reinforcements from the third landing zone finally arrive at the fourth, and lift the siege there with a firm strike to the enemy’s rear. Ever since the first Hegemony special operations troops had blended in with civilians for a suicide attack, the Arkasians had taken to scything down enemy personnel without consideration. A room full of begging prisoners of war… while the rules of engagement are never changed to not shoot them, the squad that finds them doesn’t, and the lot are taken alive.

As the station powers down, a trio of Arkasian destroyers and their frigate escorts surge forward to provide close escort. The Hegemony ships that make a pass at it learn that the Arkasians are inclined to keep the facility intact, and though they inflict further damage, the arrival of an Arkasian battleship at that forward position keeps it in one piece… mostly.

As the Arkasians and Arcadians consolidate control over the orbitals and near-planetary space, the battle in space is all but over, with the enemy stragglers limping away, cut off from resupply and checked by the far superior coalition naval force. They could run, or surrender, or starve eventually; whatever their choice, they were no longer an immediate threat to the operation.

Planetside, the NEGL Skyhawks unleash a barrage of defensive fire, CIWS and chaff flying even as thrusters burn hard, forcing the lumbering landers into hard maneuvers to avoid the incoming fire. One of the Skyhawks still takes a hit and burns, accelerating ever more rapidly towards the ground. A handful of Auxiliaries manage to jump from the wreckage on the way down, their thrust packs firing as they closed with the ground. Unfortunately, several of them come down in Hegemony-controlled area; the results do not make the rest of the Auxiliaries overly inclined to take prisoners.

“Where the fuck is our SEAD cover?!” demands the pilot of one of the damaged Skyhawks, on the coalition channel (intentionally or not), as the Byzantite struggles to keep the lander in formation. “This is not the time for fucking amateur hour!” Still, the Skyhawk makes it to the landing area, and it and the surviving comrades begin rapidly disgorging their Auxiliaries. While held in reserve for the moment, it was still important to clear the pad. After the crash of the Huerdaen lander, the first vehicles deployed are the Kodiak-variant Kodiacs, bringing to bear their twin 40mm cannons for point-defense. As the Air Guard retreated, one of the auxiliaries fired a shoulder-launched multipurpose missile after it, though the relatively short-range system ran out of thrust well short.

“Echo 1-4 to Command, be advised, we could really use some real atmospheric defense down here, over.”

“Copy, Echo 1-4. The airspace is too hot for Peregrines. Make due for now, over.”

The Helljumpers, for their part, have experience dropping in without wild weasel support. Dying on the way in was an occupational hazard that even the most elite among them had to accept. Likewise, none were surprised to emerge straight into a shootout, and they coolly returned fire with rifles and grenade launchers, and a pair of opportunistic anti-tank rockets into enemy strongpoints. The situation was far from ideal, but the tide was turning against the enemy, and it lifted the helljumpers along with them, and they finally break the enemy and are able to start pushing forward.

Fight for the Control Room
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

Shock troopers and regulars alike were caught off guard by the dazzling drones, attacking their vision and ability to function. Some of the regulars, lacking the discipline of their better-trained fellows, opened fire on the small drones, effectively firing wildly in the big room. Ricochets screamed off of every surface, and the wild rounds hit seemingly everything in the area. Somewhere, a magazine was hit, and a detonation rocked the room, bringing part of the catwalk down to the lower area of the room, and providing an approach, although unsteady, for the regulars to attempt to attack the flank of the control room door.

Through it all, the Infantrists tore apart the attackers as they came on from seemingly all sides. With the room breached, fire on the hallways could no longer be maintained, and enemies stormed in from all sides, firing as they came. The smoke was starting to clear, and some of the fire was becoming more accurate. While much of it was ineffective on the Peninsular heavy armor, a number of shock troopers had reorganized and were putting consistent, deadly fire on the walkway, trying to drive them back toward the control room door. Inside, the handful of coalition operators seemed to be preparing for their end, clutching weapons in white-knuckled hands as they readied themselves to defend the doorway. With a mostly clear approach, a squad of shock troopers began their charge up the fallen walkway, as a new roar joined the fray.

The jamming that had limited the Peninsular soldiers suddenly fell and the roar of the Huerdaen 60mm Hephaestus cannon was nothing like what these halls had seen before. HUDs displayed the Shield had deployed most of their squads with their field gun down the hallway behind the shock troopers, cutting off that entire advance. The other two squads had cut through part of the facility, and were clustered around a signature that was no doubt the destroyed enemy jammer.

Full combat network access followed, but it was lost in the incoming fire. The first anyone knew the Huerdaen had engaged, the room was filled with a spray of blood and ichor as a 60mm piercing round tore straight down the hallway, brutalizing bodies without even slowing. With accurate data, the Huerdaen were able to aim the big gun to avoid the supporting bunker and pillar of the control room, using AP rounds to scythe through the enemy forces. The sheer noise of the gun, even though it only fired a short burst of a few rounds down the hallway, was nearly deafening in the enclosed halls, and the Shield came in on the heels of that cacophany without hesitation. Slamming into walls with their shoulders, they tore straight through non-load-bearing walls like small tanks, striking at the enemy advance from seemingly everywhere. Even though a mere platoon had broken through, the shock of the attack, the sudden lack of any information advantage, and the brutality of the defense turned what had been a desperate hold into a slaughter. A few of the shock troopers struggled to attack, but their own allies, disorientation, and confusion brought and end to them before they could even begin to organize a dedicated defense. In less than a minute, the Huerdaen had firing lines securing three of the four approaches to the control room chamber, leaving the Infantrists to finish off those unfortunate few still inside and protect the last approach.

There was little need. Most of the regulars were out of action, either in shock or casualties, and the shock troopers had been all but wiped out. A few had fallen back into the final hall, but intel showed a hasty retreat on all fronts, surrendering the critical point. The Control Room was securely in the hands of the invaders.

Landing Zone
Operation Shieldwall: Phase One

Inside the ad-hoc landing zone command center, more than a few people were cheering on the 407th, as their information about the fight below came back into focus, showing the route in full effect. The first, most critical objective of the invasion had fallen to them, and their landing zone was ensured, if not secure. Despite the ever-present danger to their lives, it was a weight off everyone's shoulders that they wouldn't find themselves so quickly trapped on a world full of hostile foes.

Using Huerdaen shorthand, Wi'Sennig called out through the din. "Commander Kernnich! Orbital forces have identified that multiple large groups of Hegemony forces have begun moving. Armor, mechanized, and airborn, both regular and guard. They're making their move on CUP local forces."

The news was expected, and right in the window the analysts had predicted. However, the JLT's face was less than confident as he glanced up at the G2G. "However, all communication to CUP nations has been cut off. Even word from our local assets near them show no ability to reach local command structures, and some of our own units in more isolated areas have suddenly lost connection. Organizing a defense with them will be almost impossible if we can't restore communication. It's likely there's a larger jammer like the one they used in the shield facility somewhere. The Hegemony was well prepared for this."

A quick glance at his console and he nodded, eyes coming back up to meet Kernnich's gaze. "Sir, word from allied force command. 'Initiating Phase Two. Deploying Task Force Nemesis'."
