Mega-what? YN's electric energy sources.

Postby HarYan » Tue Nov 16, 2021 5:56 am

What are the main sources used to generate electricity to power the grid of your nation? Why did you choose these sources in the past, and what you want to use in the future?

The UEH energy grid sources by type:

-> Nuclear: about 40%.
-> Hydro: about 25%.
-> Coal: about 15%.
-> Geothermal: about 5%.
-> Biomass: about 5%.
-> Wind: about 5%.
-> Solar: about 5%.

Notes:

These percentages are approximations, the real value provided by each type of energy source depends on a series of factors such as peaks and troughs in the amount of consumption in certain regions, whether the weather conditions are good or bad in certain regions, the volume of water in rivers, etc.

In order to reserve its coal reserves to be used in the production of synthetic liquid fuels, coal (a resource the UEH haves with abundance) was mostly gradually replaced by nuclear energy and renewables in the electricity production. With before this, years ago, over 60% of the countries electrical energy being made from coal-fired power stations. Environmental questions were also a major reason for this. The government has forbidden the use of natural gas and liquid fuels for generating electrical energy to the grid on a large scale in order to reserve it to the nations vehicular fleet. The UEH doesn't have large oil reserves, thus needing to use what it haves in a rational way in order to prevent shortages, depending on imports, or rising prices. As said, a large portion of the nations fuel comes from the liquefaction of coal, although also using its oil and gas reserves located in the Province of Novembria and in the Province of Oaxyan. Liquefaction of natural gas from these reserves is also used. Importation of fuel is authorized in case national production fails to meet the demands. Biofuels are also being produced in the country in a considerably wide scale. Electrofuels are also receiving lots of investments. Other measures to more rationally use fuels were taken, also. Sedan cars and hatch cars powered by diesel fuel were forbidden in the country, in order to save it for heavier vehicles. All commercially sold gasoline in the country must have from 15% (minimum) to 30% (maximum) ethanol fuel mixed in its composition. Commercially sold diesel fuel must have 10% of biodiesel fuel in its composition. Although diesel-powered SUV cars and trucks are authorized, certain kinds of large diesel-powered trucks not made for professional reasons are of forbidden fabrication in the country, thus needing to be imported by the interested part or by the dealer thus making them much more expensive. A law also stipulates that, preferably, vehicles of common use in the country must be flex fuel (capable of using both gasoline and ethanol).

Energy generation is a considerable topic of debate in Tangatarehua at present and was indeed a major issue in the recent election.

Current sources are as follows:

  • 30% Nuclear
  • 30% Coal
  • 30% Natural gas
  • 5% Hydro
  • 5% Other renewable (wind, solar, etc.)

Considerable controversy exists around this, with most parties at the last election pledging to phase out coal but disagreeing over what to replace it with. Several parties also oppose nuclear power, while the government just elected has pledged to concentrate on nuclear power as a way to end the nation's reliance on coal.

While there is considerable support for renewable energy sources, especially expanded hydroelectric power generation, at present most of these do not meet the country's energy needs, with Tangatarehua's electricity consumption continually climbing year and year, often at a faster rate than the nation can increase electricity production - again, a major source of political controversy.

Nuclear: 30%
Hydro: 25%
Solar: 15%
Wind: 10%
Geothermal: 10%
Innovative Renewables: 10% (examples: roads producing energy, electricity produced from dance floors, Neutrinovoltaic Energy)

This is just for electricity. When we include transportation, 1/3 of automobiles are hybrid (HEV), 1/5 are battery charged electric (BEV), 1/10 are alternate fuel, and 1/4 are traditional (gas powered), and about 1/8 are FCEV (fuel cell electric cars). Andocara is a clean energy dominant country, though conventionality still exist.

The main sources used to generate electricity to power the grid of the Dyrrhonian Isles are burning coal or wood. They were chosen in the past because of their high thermal conductivity, low cost of production, and ability to use the abundant amount of coal available in the region. In the future, the Isles are looking to power the region via hydroelectricity. However, as of 2014, hydroelectricity accounted for less than 1% of its total power generation.

We do rely quite a bit on petroleum, yes- but a majority of our energy comes from renewable sources.

42% Fossil Fuels/Nonrenewable
35% Nuclear
14% Solar
4% Hydro
3% Wind
56% Renewable

We have been pushing to increase the share of renewable energy sources on our energy sources. Thus so far, it represents a majority of the energy output, but coal is still dominant.

47%: Nuclear
26%: Coal/Oil
18%: Hydro
9%: Wind/Other

Nuclear power is widely used due to the surplus of uranium in the country, while coal and oil are used simply because it is cheaper. Hydro is used because of Alkmaaria's low altitude and many lakes/reservoirs.
Wind is not widely used because it is expensive, and it rains too often for solar to be used effectively.

As is stated by Sacred Law, only pure sources of electric power are encouraged, lest we want a repeat of the calamities of the 22nd Century. The power of the sun, captured by solar-panels and the scrapped parts of spaceships are essential, as are a few coveted fusion reactors and a great many econo-reactors; though wind-farms and geothermal plants are allowable. The use of carbon-emitting fossil fuels are highly discouraged.

  • Nuclear power: 82%
  • Hydropower: 6%
  • Solar power: 5%
  • Wind power: 3%
  • Coal power: 2%
  • Waste incineration: 2%

The first nuclear power plant in the Democratic Republic began operations in 1965 and, following the 1973 oil crisis, the government of Prime Minister Naoki Nakasone announced their plan to have Gandoor end its reliance on foreign oil (at the time, oil power plants accounted for 67% of all electric energy produced in the Democratic Republic) and focus on expanding its usage of nuclear power for the production of electricity, with a stated goal of 'at least 60% of all electric energy produced in the Democratic Republic of Gandoor will come from nuclear power plants by the year 2000'.

This plan has been continued by later governments and, when the year 2000 arrived, nuclear power was responsible for 62% of all electricity in our nation. It is the current goal of the government to have at least 85% of all electricity produced in Gandoor to come from nuclear power by the end of 2030.

Coal-fired power stations were once responsible for 28% of all electricity production at its peak in 1976. However, the usage of coal to produce electricity in Gandoor has been gradually phased out since the mid-1980s, originally due to the air and water pollution caused by its usage and later due to coal being the single largest cause of climate change. All coal-fired power stations in our nation are scheduled to be decommissioned no later than 31 December 2030.

Hydropower, solar power, wind power, and waste incineration are all used to supplement nuclear power.

The Commonwealth Distribution of Energy Sources are as follows,

  • Nuclear Power : 54.8%
  • Coal Power: 18.4%
  • Hydroelectric Power: 10.6%
  • Thamutergic Power: 8.8%
  • Wind Power: 5.3%
  • Others: 2.1%

It should be noted this is across the Empire and Commonwealth as a whole, and not just MineLegotia and Equestria. The general trend of power generation has always been to shift towards Nuclear Power Plants and renewable energy sources. However, coal remains a decent portion of all electricity generated due to its ease and low costs compared to the other options. Coal is mostly popular among the newer colonies and several of the more impoverished regions of the Empire and Commonwealth as a whole, attempts have been made to help these regions to bring in nuclear energy, however, a series of unfortunate accidents due to incompetence by local administrators and engineers have slowed the transition as a whole.

For foreigners, it is made by noted of a different type of electrical generation method, known as Thamutergic Power. This method of electrical generation involves the creation of a thaumaturgic construct to 'spin' the fans typically found in coal power plants to produce electricity. It can be said that this is technically bio-energy, as the most efficient method of maintaining these constructs is via the usage of organic material as fuel for the construct. Popularised by the scientists from Twilights Citadel, this method has become a contender to the established energy sources in recent years.

Overview of Cosnicu's Power sources:
Wind: 73% (main power supply)
Tidal: 16%
Geothermal: 6%
Solar: 4%
Fission: <1%
Combustion (coal, oil, natural gas, etc.): <1%
Fusion (complete, no infrastructure yet): 0%
Dyson (Experimental, not yet complete): 0%
Exotic (varies): <1%

Overview of power sources:
Wind: Wind is Cosnicu;s main power supply, and many of their offshore windfarms can extend to hundreds of square kilometers. It also exports energy to neighbor states, most notably Crevasia and Durenzia. but also a smll portion is shipped to Apalacia as well.
Tidal: Tidal is Cosnicu;s less important but also equally well known energy source. It comes from two main areas: Ocean currents and tidal barrages. Most (if not all) of Cosnicu;s rocky coastlines house them, but usually in a way that the coastline itself is not damaged or affected (often reslting in what are known as "seablocks", large black structures on the edge of a horizon equally spaced to allow ships and sea life through. The generators that draw energy from the ocean are less effecient and powerful. Due to ties with Crevasia and the climate treaty shared with them, Cosnicu's current turbines are esigned to not affect sea life while still drawing power from the currents. As such, they regulate themselves, not exceeding more than a few kilometers per hour in rotational speeds.
Geothermal: Geothermal is nto characteristic of Cosnicu, but it does operate three plants. These plants, set in the deep ocean, are meant to house automatic systems, and can maintain themselves for several decades without intervention.
Solar: The mot common civilian power source, Solar energy comes in many forms, varying from orbital collectors to the rooftops of most buildings on Cosnicu. Orbital collectors use a relay to send power to the surface via concentrated light.
Combustion: Comustion is being phased out very quickly in COsnicu and many of its combustion fuel plants have been repurposed into plastics or other chemichal factories.
ydroelectric power: Cosnicu lacks many major rivrs, and does not operate any hydroelectric dams or use hydroelectric power.
Fusion: Although Cosnicu has managed to sucessfully make fusion economical for them, they lack the infrastructure to add it to their power grid. Cosntruction of supply lines and connection to the power grid is underway though.
Dyson Technology: Cosnicu has began construction of a dyson sphere, but will not be finished with the technology for another two centuries, it is also competing with Apalacia and Durenzia for uncontested use of the sun.

Exotic energy sources:
Orbital decay: Cosnicu has several satelites that gain mechanichal energy by scooping up space debris and slowing it enough to cause it to fall out of the sky. Cosnicu plans to eventually use this to hopefully one day launch spacecraft more efficently.

Since the mid-1970s, each successive government has fully embraced nuclear power, seeing it as a very good method at establishing a sort of energy autarky for the nation. This aggressive approach has allowed Mobius to free itself from foreign oil dependency that many Western nations are sadly still under. This in turn gives the country a sort of unique liberty in its foreign policy that not many nations have.
