Much like how $ represents the dollar, each country should be able to add a symbol (Unicode or otherwise) to refer to the currency in more concise manner.

You can simply put a symbol with strikethrough and underline BBCode in a facebook. However, a field like this would be nice

Being able to choose a custom currency symbol would be great! Extra customization like this is always good...

What purpose would this serve?

I don't think there's any issue that uses a currency symbol (e.g. $5.99) for any purpose whatsoever, and even in cases of stats that contain monetary figures like "GDP per capita," you can get by with just X @@CURRENCY@@ where X = the value that is present, and @@CURRENCY@@ being what you set your currency to be.

I think this is a solution in search of a problem, and I'm not sure if "because I like it" or "because it looks cool" are good reasons to have a currency symbol code.

Seconding this. Currency symbols seem like something that would fit better in a factbook. A nation's main page can't fit every minutia on it without becoming a mess.
