FORMATION / FORMACION

STYLE OF PLAY / ESTILO DE JUEGO
Style Modifier: +2
Description: Alfonzo Medrano likes to play attacking football with three players up front, with tall striker Amunategui in the middle and abundance of wingers capable of playing multiple positions at their disposal. The three players upfront is mandatory in his lineups, and he prefers the 4-3-3 over the 3-4-3 formation due to lack of central defenders in his squad. He may also play 2-5-3 depending on the situation. They also employ a physical brand of football where players commit to tackles and prefer to roughen up the opposition.

The team prefer the usage of wingers to deliver the ball to the box via low to high crosses, and does not prefer to keep the ball at the middle of the park. Corners are usually delivered via crosses with the ball kicked from the corner spot.

Medrano is a calm man and is less likely to react violently to partial calls. His coaching staff however, have a quirk to start touchline brawls.

Most likely to:
Score penalties: Quevedo, Amunategui, Vertiz
Score a direct free kick: Quevedo, Berriz, Palmero
Concede a penalty: Puma, Aranaz, Coro
Booked for short temper: Puma, Duran, Maquibar

The Island in the Mist
Part 1

When you head toward the middle of the ocean in northern Rushmore, between the Altimarus Sea and the Rose Sea, above Liventia and below Aquillan, there is a patch of the ocean that can only be accessed by a certain group of people who call themselves the Hidden. The Hidden exist in a place - an island - whose location is ever changing; it can be accessed on the exact plane of Rushmore at any time if you know the way.

The truth is that the Hidden live in an Island known as Isle Noire; it's a place that is just a few degrees out of sync with what they call the material plane; they call their home the plane of Isle Noire. Those few degrees make a huge difference in not only the makeup of things in Isle Noire, but how light behaves; in Isle Noire, everything is in black and white, and then in shades of gray. This lack of color means that some things that are important on the material plane isn't important in Isle Noire, while other details become even more important than people could imagine.

In the plane of Isle Noire, there is only the island, Isle Noire; all around it is endless ocean as far as the eye can see. Navigators have circumnavigated the globe, and though there are landmasses like the regions of Atlantian Oceania, Anaia, and Esportiva on the material plane, there is only endless ocean on the plane of Isle Noire. This has meant that the people of Isle Noire are even more conscientious of living off the land; thankfully, the ocean is bountiful in both food, vegetation, and ways to get clean water.

It was only fifty years ago that the rift between the Plane of Isle Noire and the material plane appeared; the first few navigators were blinded when they first made their way to the material plane, or the plane where colour exists. Since then, the people of Isle Noire have made it an ongoing mission to find out more about the material plane, and also about why their plane exists at all if their plane isn't the default way of things.

To describe how things are like in Isle Noire, the residents have taken to calling their place as being in a Mist - because it feels like as soon as they go home, a black and white filter is put upon their vision like a mist that obscures everything. Whether it's the place or the physiology of people, it remains to be seen.

Thankfully for Noireans, they've been accepted enough in Rushmore to be allowed to attend a football tournament; it's another chance to experience the material world and see just how things are different.

Corrupt Dictatorship

(OOC: Once again, I am continuing the story of the Pridnestrovian intervention in Ceroat, a story which began in NSSCRA but has now spilled over to the Copa Rushmori. Relevant parts can be found here (1), here (2), and here (3).)

"Give me the thermal scope," Major Gavrina Vasilyevna Kumilyova of the Pridnestrovian Airborne Forces demanded. When her two comrades took their time handing her the scope, Kumilyova turned to face them and almost shouted, “Give me the scope now!”

“Here,” Senior Lieutenant Ravil Ivanovich Yanenko said as he put the scope into Kumilyova’s hands.

“Ravil, Ivanich, watch our backs, will you?” Kumilyova asked. Yanenko and Junior Lieutenant Boris Ivanovich Nukorev nodded and took up positions inside the room to give themselves as big a field of vision as possible to watch out for potential intruders trying to sneak up on them. Meanwhile, Kumilyova put the thermal scope up to her eyes and pointed it outside the room and towards the village of Duboynye. She could see three figures on their knees in the crossroads in the middle of the town, and at least a dozen other figures standing just outside of the spotlights shining down on the three people in the middle. Kumilyova activated the infrared scope and pointed it straight at the persons kneeling at the crossroads. She needed to make sure that they were still humans and had not been assimilated by their alien enemies.

The screen on the scope showed the world in a varying range of colors. Objects such as the huts and shacks in Duboynye were colored blue to indicate that they were cold, which made sense given that it was currently the middle of the night. The spotlights shining down on the crossroads showed up as white-hot on the thermal camera, and the figures in the middle were painted in a mix of greens, yellows, oranges, and reds. “Thank God,” Kumilyova muttered to herself. Those three Airborne troopers who had been captured by the aliens were all close friends of hers, and she would have been devastated if she found out that they had all been assimilated by the aliens. “We’ve still got Slava, Nikolay’ch, and Arya,” she told the others.

“That’s great, Rina,” Yanenko said. “Now what?”

“We have no choice now, Ravil,” Kumilyova replied. “Give me the radio.”

Chyort,” Yanenko muttered. He knew exactly what that entailed. He immediately dropped his AK-12 rifle, reached into his backpack, and took out a large object that resembled an old brick-style cellphone. It was, in fact, a military walkie-talkie with additional features such as frequency hopping and voice encryption that made it useful for the kind of missions that the Airborne Forces were carrying out, such as the manhunt for the warlord Edwin Chudovsky. In their pre-mission briefing, Kumilyova had been told that using the radio was supposed to be a last resort, when the possibility of her team getting captured was very high. And with half of her team already in enemy hands and the rest of them very likely to follow, Kumilyova had decided that this was the perfect time to use the radio. “Here you go,” Yanenko said as he handed the radio to the major.

But just as Kumilyova had begun fiddling with the radio’s controls to set it to the right frequency, a loud booming voice rang out from what sounded like all over the village. “Pridnestrovians!” it said. “This is Edwin Chudovsky, the man you have been looking for since the start of your invasion of Ceroat. I am here! There is no need for you to look any further.”

Der’mo,” Boris Nukorev muttered. “He knows! He knows we’ve been looking for him this whole time!”

“No shit!” Yanenko said back. “No wonder he’s always managed to escape us every single time we’ve gone after him!”

“What do we do now, Rina?” Nukorev asked.

“Shut up! I’m trying to think,” Kumilyova hissed. She then looked out the window once again and shouted, “If that is really you, Colonel Chudovsky, then why don’t you show yourself?”

Chudovsky didn’t reply to Kumilyova’s words, at least not verbally. Instead, a figure walked out from behind the cover of a shack and went towards the three kneeling captives. “Pridnestrovians, here I am!” the man shouted through a megaphone. “Colonel Edwin Chudovsky, whom you also call a warlord, in the flesh! And as you can see behind me, I have three of your comrades. Their lives are in my hands, Pridnestrovians. If you wish for them to remain alive then I suggest that you come out of there and join your comrades in captivity!”

“Give me the scope again, Ravil,” Kumilyova ordered, and Yanenko swapped the radio in Kumilyova’s hands with the thermal scope. Kumilyova’s original intentions were to take more photographs of Chudovsk as evidence that it really was him, but when she pointed the scope at the crossroads, she had not yet taken it out of its thermal imaging mode, and now she was presented with the biggest surprise of this whole mission. “Bozhe moy!” she said.

“What? What is it, Rina?” Yanenko asked.

“Chudovsky, he’s one of them,” Kumilyova said softly in shock. “Chudovsky is an alien!”

“What?! No way!” Yanenko exclaimed, taking the scope for himself. But it was true. Edwin Chudovsky’s figure shone as brightly on the thermal imagery as the floodlights shining down on the scene before them.

Govno!” Nukorev shouted. “So that’s how he’s been escaping our traps this whole time! And now that... that thing has got us trapped!”

“Nobody has anybody trapped just yet, Ivanich!” Kumilyova said. She took a few more pictures of Chudovsky, both through the thermal and visible light modes of the scope, and then she took the radio from Yanenko once again and tuned it to the right frequency before finally pressing the push-to-talk button. “Patriarch, this is Collector,” she called out. “I repeat, to Patriarch, this is Collector calling. Can you hear me, Patriarch?”

Kumilyova had to repeat her call twice before someone finally responded. “Collector, this is Patriarch,” the voice on the other end of the radio said. “Sorry for the delay. Status report?”

“Charlie-Two, Charlie-Five, and Charlie-Six have been captured, Patriarch,” Kumilyova replied. “Charlie-One, Charlie-Three, and Charlie-Four are about to become the same. Requesting Option Antioch now!”

“Copy that, Collector,” Patriarch replied. “Request for Option Antioch has been noted. We’ll get back to you with the news.”

Spasibo, Patriarch,” Kumilyova nodded, and then she turned off the radio to conserve its battery. “It’s all up to the higher-ups now, comrades,” she told Yanenko and Nukorev. “All we can do now is wait.”

“But what if the aliens don’t want to wait for us?” Nukorev asked.

“Then we’ll have to find ways to make them wait for as long as we need them,” Kumilyova replied.

Copa Rushmori 39: Hispinas duel with VWE 13 co-hosts at El Castillo to open tournament
Group draw sees Mytanija and Graintfjall to face each other in Group D

MANDRID - The stage has been set up for Hispinas' hosting of the 39th edition of the Copa Rushmori tournament.

After the group draw conducted by Renato Solgado, Hispinas has been drawn with former Copa Rushmori champions Astograth, as well as former co-hosts Bollonich, and tournament debutants Isle Noire in Group A. We were able to get the schedule from the tournament organizers, and on Thursday night (IC time), after the opening ceremony of the tournament, the two co-hosts of the recently concluded Volleyball World Expo (VWE) will face each other. The schedule would be convenient for the top two seeds of Group A as they would face each other in Matchday 3 after facing the lower seeds, and the Ro16 spots may have been decided by then.

It has been confirmed as well that King Marco Juan XXII will deliver the opening remarks of the tournament during the opening ceremonies, as well as to present the Copa Rushmori trophy to the winners of the tournament come the time the competition returns to the stadium for the fifth time, after four group stage matches. The last of those, a probable Group D winner decider between Mytanija and Graintfjall, two nations tightly-knitted in the Copa Rushmori rankings, and been drawn in the next group. Organizers have confirmed that this match was initially going to be held in Piedramarilla's Estadio Jose Aguirrez Plancha, but the possible intensity of the match, combined with the two being the top seeds of that group, has convinced them to shift the match to El Castillo, and shift the other concurrent match, Cabo Azure vs Takeshwar, to La Plancha instead.

Football in Ardengard

Though Ardengard has a multitude of sports, with the sport-loving populations growing everyone second and new ones being accepted regularly, football is by far the most popular one in the nation. From the dust-roads of villages with bricks for goal posts, to the newly renovated Caltex International Stadium at the heart of the capital city – the love for football in Ardengard is ever growing. With the concept of professional leagues being introduced in the early 1900s, it didn’t take long for the Ardengardian Footballing Association to be established as well as the advent of the Ardengardian Premier League. In its first season, the APL consisted of ten teams from the biggest cities fighting it out in a double robin to be adjudged the best team in the country. A few years in, more and more teams were listed into the league and the numbers kept growing rapidly. With a number too great to contain in a single league, the AFA decided to introduce multiple tiers – along with promotion and relegation. The APL was to be the top tier, followed by League II, III and IV. The number of teams to be promoted or relegated varied for the first few seasons, before settling at two. The entire professional division is now known as the Ardengardian Football League, consisting of the APL and the three lower tiers.

The AFA announced the squads for Copa Rushmori, and revealed the newest kits for the team at a scheduled Press Conference.

Roster

Goalkeepers:
Pos # Name Age
GK 1 Debbie Dutt 29
GK 77 Chris MacDonald 35
GK 38 Lorris Summer 23

Debbie Dutt is the clear favourite to be Ardengard’s main keeper and is expected to play in all matches, barring injury. The twenty-nine year old has spent a few years with the National Team and has done well to cement his place for now. With masterful reflexes and an impressive penalty record, he will play an important role in deciding the outcome of matches. Also in the squad is the experienced mind of Chris MacDonald. His last appearance for the national side was in a friendly against Brookstation a year back, but his presence in the dressing room makes him a crucial figure in the team. Lorris Summer is a new face in the side. Though successful in domestics, she is yet to make her national debut.

Defenders:
Pos # Name Age
LB 28 Raymond Ingal 28
LB 41 Lavure Natten 31
CB 20 Emma Underwood 23
CB 54 Oslo Maramis 24
CB 26 Saul Liptin 30
RB 3 Paline Amber 29
RB 78 Erwin Neton 25

The most anticipated combination in the defence is the linking up of Saul Liptin and Erwin Neton. Both have had excellent domestic seasons and with complimentary traits, can prove to be a virtual wall on the right flank of Ardengard’s half. On the other side, Emma Underwood’s pace may prove to be useful against counter attacks, and Raymong Ingal will be key in executing high pressing up the pitch. Though Oslo Maramis and Paline Amber have been selected in the team, their recent forms are a point of worry. The coach may look to play them in some low-stake games to help them get their confidence and form back on track. Lauvre Natten, though well in form, may want to improve upon his flexibility when it comes to the team’s general style of play.

Midfielders:
Pos # Name Age
DM 83 Tuppin Winger 26
DM 33 Ginni Promer 33
LM 44 Meryn Ilt 27
LM 99 Lorne Myer 30
CM 42 Stephanie Hawkin 19
CM 56 Hansel Bose 28
RM 93 Harriet Jonset 25
RM 36 Richard Maslow 30

The mid-field could be Ardengard’s main place to dominate. With a game-plan reliant on smooth passing, the likes of Lorne Myer, Hansel Bose and Richard Maslow in their line-up could be perfect to execute the same. The trio have been a constant for the Ardengardian national team for quite a few years and have proven to be a very consistent combination. There is no doubt that they will be able to perform again this year. Another name to look out for would be teenager Stephanie Hawkin. As the youngest player on the team, there are great expectations upon her – to carry on Ardengard’s regular flow of fantastic midfielders. Mention must also be made of the defensive midfielders, whose flexibility in play allows them to function as the defence or higher up on the pitch – as and what the circumstance calls for.

Forwards:
Pos # Name Age
LW 9 Greg Stradet 28
LW 11 Abraham Horner 32
RW 30 Shahee Firdos 22
ST 7 Hank Vipen 29
ST 10 Julio Kalio Mao 20

In the attack, all eyes will be on the youngsters Julio Kalio Mao and Shahee Firdos. The former has been allotted the coveted Number 10 jersey this year – a thoroughly well-earned spot, following his displays up front at such a young age. Firdos has not been anything less, constantly troubling the opposing defence with quick bursts of speed in the flanks and brilliant vision to set up through balls. The pairing of the two of them is a tried and tested one. Their journey to the top together has made them fast friends, and they will hope that shows on the pitch as well. On the other flank, Greg Stradet and Abraham Horner bring some experience into the attack. Both need to be kept an eye on for clever plays and plans to break past the defence.

Team Information:
Name Role Age
Roy Dent Manager 55
Uditi Banerjee Assistant Coach 38
Damien Orman Assistant Coach 34
Jim Grant Assistant Coach 39
Angela Simmons Team Physician 31
Saul Liptin Captain 30

Style of play

With the ball at their feet, the Ardengardians rely on quick and clever passing to keep the ball with themselves and play through the opposition’s defence. The players keep possession till a failed tackle or high press results in a gap in the opponent’s defence, which is then exploited to make a quick move and an attempt to put the ball at the back of the net.
With plenty of youngsters in the squad, the team’s pace is something that opponents should be wary of as well. Though not the usual style of play, a quick midfield and attack can produce lightning – fast counter attacks that could just provide some goals at key moments.
Once they lose the ball, the team relies on high pressing to win it back. Defenders and midfielders both attack at the opponents around the halfway line. A successful tackle high up the pitch could also give way to a quick move to run past the defence and enable a 1v1 against the keeper.
The National Team’s style of play is also characteristic of the APL’s general style - dynamic, fast paced and aggressive. With all the players having played in the APL, not only do they know how to execute the game-plan, but they also know how to defend against similar tactics.

Amar Kovacevic looked around the dressing room like a kid in a sweetshop. All the big names were there. Players he had grown up idolising from across the sea. A fellow defender in Grigorij Savicevic, the Izotz Zubia stopper was only five years Amar’s senior but he could remember watching him come through the ranks at Crvena Zvezda and then Atletik Thessia before his big money move to Audioslavia. Tahir Fejzuli, the wily playmaker, now a real veteran of the team. He was much older than Amar, but he had given the youngster a nod and encouraging smile when he had walked into the room. Even the smallest gesture helped. Jasno Odonelec had been great, the national team captain had a similar experience to Amar, growing up in a Mytanar immigrant community in Prahecq. He had greeted Amar when he had arrived in Hispinas and told him that he would help in any way that he could over the coming weeks, ‘after all, I know just how hard it can be’ he had said before quickly adding ‘you’ll be fine though, nobody will bite’ with a laugh.

The man who made Amar feel truly starstruck was of course Jezdimir Ocokoljic. A living legend in Mytanar football, arguably the greatest Mytanar footballer ever and a man only four goals away from holding the all-time scoring record for Mytanija. You could be sure that he would be trying to break that particular record whilst in Hispinas. Ocokoljic had walked in and put his boot bag on the bench and Amar’s jaw involuntarily dropped open. He had only ever watched him on television and now he was here on the verge of playing alongside him.

“Oi, close that mouth Amar, you’ll be catching flies any minute!” Dusko Ocokoljic – Jezdimir’s younger brother – laughed as he entered the dressing room. Amar had played alongside Dusko at under-21 level, the pair had always got on well. They hadn’t seen each other in a while but it was good to see that he was still his old self, never afraid of a wisecrack.

“Leave him alone Dusko,” Semir Besak piped up. The goalkeeper was another Amar was familiar with from playing for the under-21 national team. “We were all like that the first time we came to play with the big boys. None of us have an older brother like yours, it’s not normal!”

“Dusko’s still trying to get to my level you know?” Jezdimir said in a deadpan voice, the sheepish grin on his face gave the game away as a ripple of chuckles moved through the room.

“He’ll be waiting a long time then, eh?” Alen Hrdaljko smirked, with the sheepish expression transferring to Dusko Ocokoljic’s face from his brother’s.

“Aye, he’s coming for your spot Alen, watch out.” Jezdimir laughed as Bigger Mbala-Ekakia, Omer Kuhar-Arh and Damien Gannot entered the room along with the other Astograth-born member of the side, Slobodan Vujovic. Amar knew him very well. Each clasped hands with Amar and he was gradually becoming more comfortable. It helped that there was so many familiar faces, but the atmosphere among the team seemed to be very convivial and welcoming. The older players reminded Amar of his older siblings, never afraid of firing a jibe your way but also always on-hand to offer their protection if they felt it necessary. It definitely eased the nerves of stepping up from under-21 level to the full national team, particularly given that he was effectively replacing Mojmir Anac in the squad. Anac had over 100 caps for Mytanija and had won the Top League with Olympic in his long career. He was getting towards the tail end of that career and injuries were starting to pile-up a little, a calf strain ruling him out of at least half of the Copa Rushmori. It was that which opened the door for Lev Repin to bring Amar Kovacevic into the fold for the very first time.

Amar had grown up in Astograth. Slobodan Vujovic was another Astograth-born Mytanar and there appeared to be a few others coming through the ranks too with Radozevic and Zinkovsky performing well at club level and receiving attention from scouts from the FSM. Diaspora players were growing in importance within the national team set-up, a symptom of the mass emigration brought on by the Mytanar Conflict. Jasno Odonelec was the poster boy for this, the Prahecq-born captain of the Mytanar national team and it was becoming an even more regular phenomenon. Sefir Ajanovic was another Prahecq-born member of the team; and now there was Amar and Slobodan Vujovic forming their own duo from Astograth. They were all Mytanar, there was no debate over that, though some on the right of Mytanar politics had occasionally remarked that they felt the team was becoming less and less Mytanar with every passing tournament. The team tuned that sort of noise out and most of those who supported the Hoops disagreed with the sentiment entirely.

Amar knew he did. He had always felt Mytanar, even growing up across the sea. There had been the occasional jibe when coming up through the Astograthian academy system with East Railway, opposition players trying to get under his skin by referencing his Mytanar heritage. He was proud to be born in Astograth, but that sort of thing only cemented the feeling of difference within his mind. His family spoke Mytanar at home and avidly followed everything going on back home from football to politics to music to television. It was almost hard not to feel Mytanar growing up amongst that. He was very proud to have made it this far, he was going to be the sporting embodiment of the nation out on the pitch.

“Okay! Quieten down lads please.” Lev Repin shouted as he entered the room with his assistants. “I want these first training sessions to be full gas please. No shirking the effort, no taking it easy. We will ease down as we get towards the match. I know some of you might be thinking ‘we can take it easy, it’s only Takeshwar’. That sort of attitude will see you on the bench for the opening game of the tournament and it might be difficult to find your way back in. I want players who want to be here. I’m sure you’ve all already welcomed Amar Kovacevic into the fold. He’s an excellent young player and I want everybody to make sure he feels at home with this squad. He’s going to be a big part of the next few years for this team, let’s make sure he gets off to a good start by helping him out wherever needed. Okay, everybody ready to train? Let’s get out there.”

La muerte de un caudillo siempre tira una sociedad al caos. Roca y Velásquez dio el ejemplo perfecto.

(The death of a caudillo always throws a society into chaos. Velásquez set the perfect example.)

Part 3: A brief return to caciquismo

The accession of Philip V to the throne of Spain had given the Empire the opportunity they needed to assert centralised control over the colony of San Isidro Labrador. The military leader Sergio Roca y Velásquez became the new representative of Spain in the colony. Even if he increasingly only paid lip service to the rule of the Bourbons, the tax revenues he sent home were enough for the Empire and the stability and prosperity of his reign quieted his enemies. But his death in 1741, followed by Philip's increasing mental incompetency and death in 1746 upset the apple cart of San Isidrano politics.

Roca y Velásquez's death set off a desperate struggle for power. Carlos Miralles de Ávila, having been under house arrest for most of the past thirty years, tried to seize the opportunity to reclaim his lost authority. Some of the old royalist forces rallied to him, and for a brief time could claim to hold some kind of authority, but he was an old man, and the younger, rising generation barely knew of him. It did not help that he was out of step with the changing language, and his arrogance, shown in his insistence on petty court protocols, eventually discredited him. He was imprisoned again and died in captivity in 1743. He never asserted full control over the island and his pleas to the Spanish court went unheeded. The deputy of Roca y Velásquez, José María Toledano, took his turn at attempting to become the next caudillo. But the wealth of the large planters enabled them to raise private armies and, after several bloody and inconclusive campaigns, a return to the pre-Bourbon status quo soon ensued. Toledano ruled in name as the representative of the Spanish crown, but in reality held little more than the city of San Erasmo and some of the surrounding territory. Meanwhile, other ports such as La Cartaya and Martemplado surpassed San Erasmo in importance, and the settlement of Valleverde became the de facto capital of those opposed to Toledano. There is some documentation of a Parliament of large landowners that assembled in Valleverde, but what records exist indicate only a few sporadic meetings between 1744-1759 and these only for a few days each. The people soon groaned under the increased weight of feudal dues and conscription by the various local lords, which had been relaxed under the government of Roca y Velásquez. A wave of peasant revolts swept across the island, but they were incoherent and burned brightly before flaring out as the might of the local lords descended on their villages without mercy.

The government of the rapidly fading Philip V could do nothing about the situation, to the extent that they cared at all. The accession of Ferdinand VI to the Spanish throne brought no resolution for San Isidro Labrador. The new monarch was concerned with his Italian possessions won in the War of Austrian Succession, and the simmering conflict between France and Great Britain. The Marquis of Ensenada, made Prime Minister in 1743, brought energy to the Spanish state with his embrace of reform both internal and external. The Marquis reformed taxation, expanded the control of the crown, and strengthened the position of the Spanish Empire. But any efforts to reform San Isidro Labrador fell by the wayside, paling in comparison as they did to the wealth and importance of the Spanish colonies in the Americas. At least one expedition was sent by the Spanish crown to San Isidro Labrador, but the evidence suggests that it was wrecked and only a few survivors ended up reaching the colony. Toledano, for his part, grew increasingly complacent and accepting of the state of affairs. As long as he had his title and was not threatened, he did not ask for help from Spain nor conduct any vigorous campaigns against the interior. Thus, caciquismo made its return to San Isidro Labrador.

Ensenada was dismissed in 1754, and any thought of asserting control over the Rushmori colony disappeared for the next five years. Ferdinand VI, distraught over the death of his wife in 1758, essentially abandoned any pretense at ruling from 1758 until his death in 1759. But the new king, Charles III, previously the King of Naples and Sicily, would be concerned with all aspects of his empire. He ordered reports to be drawn up of all Spanish territories as he readied ambitious plans for reform. And yes, even San Isidro Labrador was now under the eye of the new monarch, especially when Charles' advisors informed him of the mysterious drying up of the tax revenue from that remotest of colonies. A new ruler was in town, and he was to waste no time in asserting his authority in all parts of his empire, no matter how far-flung.

Remember the 88th World Cup ? Not really ? Well there is nothing much to remember other than the fact that it was Brookstation's first world cup qualifying campaign. But as luck has always been against us, we had the world number 1, Nephara in our group.

Our results against Nephara in the world cup is what I am writing about today. The first match against Nephara was much awaited , was it ? The Brook turnout in the stadium was 40% lesser than the average Brook turnout. The outcome of playing against the best team in the world as an unranked team was something that fans didn't want to witness. The match kicked off and the crowd, comprised of mostly Nepharans started shouting in hopes of a much favourable result. The match kicked off. Surprisingly enough, Brookstation started well. Nephara wasn't being able to dominate the match as they usually did. The first shock of the match came in the 9th minute when Polnareff opened Brookstation's attack. Roles assisted him and Onfroy got the ball in the box and ended up scoring the first goal of the match. This was probably one of the biggest shocks of the game but Nephara didn't seem to be affected by the goal. They would definitely cover up the goal and they sure did. In the 17th minute, Clevinger scored a long distance goal. This goal had built up a lotof pressure on Brookstation but Brookstation didn't blank out yet. They put up a good fight and kept the score level for 10 minutes. In the 27th came the third goal of the match. Surprisingly it wasn't from the favourites but from Brookstation. Polnareff moved forward into the box were he received the ball from Roles and had no problem in netting it. The match was intense till half time. Both teams got numerous chances but their defences were also upto the mark. It was half time with Brookstation leading 2-1.

Within 3 minutes of the second half, Nephara striked yet again to equalize. Marinkovic's swift header brought about the fourth goal of the match. The game was getting interesting and the ball swayed from one half to the other half with both team giving each other a good fight. The next goal of the game came from Brookstation again. de Vega picked out the ball to the captain, Robes behind the Nephara defence and the captain back passed the ball to an unmarked Roles who didn't miss the goal. The score was level yet again for a long time until Nephara completed the pattern by scoring in the 79th minute. From then onwards, the game became very intense. Within two minutes of the Nepharan goal, Brookstation opened attack. Brook midfielder, Roles was fouled on his way which rewarded Brookstation a free kick. Jean-Pierre Polnareff took the free kick and the ball swinged above the Nepharan defence to find its place in the corner of the net. That goal was termed as the best Brook goal of the year. Brookstation was in the lead with only 9 minutes left in the game. Nephara started playing offensive but the Brook defense wasn't going to give up the game easily. With only two minutes left in the game, the Brook goalkeeper kicks the ball far away. A beautiful shot, it directly reaches Cust at the corner of the box who had only the Nepharan goalkeeper in their way. He flicked the ball over the goalkeeper's head to give Brookstation a comfortable lead of the match. The crowd was silent. This was a proud moment for Brookstation as they were termed 'unofficial world champions'. It became the cover story in all newspapers the following day. This is a football moment that all Brooks should remember.

The second match is something which my heart prevents me from writing about. All you need to know is that , Nephara was in their proper form and the result as expected was a crushing defeat on Brookstation, our worst so far.

This time in the Copa Rushmori , we have again been drawn against Nephara yet again. Winning seems unlikely obviously but we must not forget the first time we played the world number 1.

“Should anyone present know of any reason that this couple should not be joined in Holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace.”

“I object!”

The shocked congregants turned to look at the figure who had burst through the doors.

“For what reason!?”

“Because that RP arc is done with.”

“Oh, right, yeah.”

And so, Græntfjall’s World Cup dream ended, with kraken masks and incendiary tattoos. Any ill feeling at the lengths the Farves had gone to to secure victory was balanced against the sheer jubilation of the first ever World Cup qualification. A win over perhaps the most famous team in all World Cup history, Starblaydia, six points from the group stage, and a rankings bump that will almost certainly see the Snow Wolves begin the next World Cup qualification stage in Pot 1, was more than enough recompense for the minor humiliation of being treated as little more than punchlines. Once they returned home – given the game took place in Tikariot, it wasn’t a long journey – the team was greeted enthusiastically at a reception in Háttmark.

As the months passed, there was time for a more searching inventory. Jason Þórhallursson’s poor performance seemed to confirm him in the “doesn’t show up to big tournaments” category. No longer the golden boy of the Baptism of Fire, the pewter man found himself being dropped from the first choice starting 11. The injury histories of Elektra Lúthersdóttir and Álfar Ásvaldursson were becoming depressing perennial sources of sorrow, and more generally the sheer number of injuries was raising concerns about fitness and conditioning. A training camp in the Multinesian archipelago was organized, putting first team and youth squads alike through their paces. Justiina Dannysdóttir, despite having declared World Cup 89 her last, showed no signs of retiring.

As spring dawned anew and the pitches began to defrost, the first new international of the year was scheduled, a friendly against Huayramarca. There were some high profile omissions, such as captain Hjörleifur Reynarsson and midfielder Amanda Guttisdóttir, but this was no second-string squad in general; Igrene Cantor chose a heteredox formation with three primarily deep-lying central midfielders. By far the biggest news surrounding the game was the inclusion in the squad of Hanif Anwarsson el-Said: when he came off the bench at half-time, he became the first Muslim and first non-white player to represent Græntfjall in a home international. KG officials held their breath – but to their relief, the GT Estadio Fútbol De Musarañas De Oro crowd didn’t break out in booing, chanting, or anything more lively than a vague patter of applause. Less welcome was the debut of Christian Asvardsson, when Michelle Matteosdóttir hobbled off just 13 minutes in. Somehow, Elektra Lúthersdóttir’s replacement was proving even more injury prone than her.

The game had a cagey, indecisive first half that saw a goal only on the stroke of the half, as Eiríka Jonathansdóttir – increasingly emerging as Græntfjall’s first choice striker – stroked in a chance from a cross by Emeli Vilbertsdóttir, whose emergence as a two-way left-back under Igrene Cantor has been perhaps the most impressive development of any player over the last two years. Jonathansdóttir had blazed two chances wide earlier on, but made amend with a neat finish in the second half, albeit doing little more than deflecting in an already goalbound flick from Lilly Wolfgangsdóttir, who earned a surprising recall. Wolfgangsdóttir got on the scoresheet herself later, though an unfortunate error from a nervous Anwarsson closed the lead to one. It took Hanne Heikkisdóttir, out of favor in Cantor’s system but serving as an important sub for Sara Kristoffersdóttir, to make things safe once again, with a trademark free-kick in added time.

A full strength squad has been named for the CR, and despite shunting Jason Þórhallursson to the bench, there’s little to quibble with. A bigger call is leaving Johanna Álvgeirsdóttir out of the starting line-up, but she’s never seemed terribly suited to the right-sided role she’s fallen into while also not quite being good enough yet to displace Amanda Guttisdóttir (and she must be watching Kæja Finnvarðsdóttir’s rise with a little concern). That right-sided midfield role is probably the most in flux: Tinni Grímólfursson gets this tournament to prove he can do more than hoof in the odd free-kick. Among the reserves, there are also few surprises; in keeping with the diversity drive, Jasmijn Spiderlair could become the first Kamdyr full international, but there’s no suggestion she doesn’t deserve her place on merit (and unfortunately, in backing up who is now arguably the team’s best player, that place is likely to remain squarely on the bench).

NYK- One Year Later

The Head of NYK Watch, the non-partisan organization that tracks exactly what is going on in the country, was prepared to give his press conference. An organization that tried to shine a light on the problems within Nyowani Kitara, they had more extensive experience than basically any other NGO on the ground.

NYK Watch- Civil War Report

As Nyowani Kitara approaches the second anniversary of the start of the civil war, we here at NYK Watch are taking a look at the situation on the ground- the military situation, the political situation, the humanitarian situation. A war that is a disaster for the people- but is anyone closer to winning?

Political Situation

Gustav Isaksson

Gustav Isaksson, former 'jack-of-all-trades' type of man, has been transferred from DFLK custody to Græntfjaller custody. The night before the transfer, there was a raid on the prison where Gustav Isaksson was being held by nighttime commandos, who were directed by the KPWC, to try and break Gustav Isaksson out of prison before he would be sent north. The raid, of course, failed, with all 8 KRF commandos dying. The DFLK has transferred custody of Isaksson with the expectation that he will be tried under Græntfjall law, and lawfully sentenced for his various crimes against humanity that he committed alongside the late Boaz Akongo, alongside Nafuna Akongo. Proceedings have yet to begin, with many Kitarans prepared to give testimony in open court against Isaksson. He, of course, has entered a not guilty plea, and says that Græntfjall lacks 'lawful authority to prosecute him', but he is still widely expected to be found guilty.

The Kitara Freedom Front

The KFF has been under the most pressure from the most involved foreign forces, including Ren Qiang's communist forces, as well as the Euran blockade and the Nepharan no-fly zone, and it has shown. While the now battle-hardened KFF has more than shown their ability to turn into a legitimate fighting force and take on the combined might of Nepharan, Euran, and KRF ground troops, especially with guerrilla warfare tactics, the year+ blockade has taken its toll. While the Euran navy are allowing strict foreign aid through into the Southern NYK regions, the blockade has caused slowdowns in the ability for NGOs to get supplies into that part of the country.

On the battlefield, the KFF suffered a major defeat in the southeastern corner of the nation, as after heavy fighting from the KFF against Nepharan, KRF, Euran, and what is believed to be Yue socialist forces, they lost a large chunk of land as they suffered a major defeat in the region surrounding the San Ortelio border. While they have been militarily defeated in that area, however, holding that region of the country has not proven to be the easiest task. The KFF is still rather popular in that part of the country, and that area of the country is still prone to random spurts of violence- what many would label as terrorist attacks. Random bombing here, blown up local party HQ there, and certainly lots of arguments and protests. IT is the foreign presence, particularly the Euran and Nepharan presence, that has allowed any of the peaceful protests to happen in this part of the country, as the KPWC generally does not like protests.

When the government's coalition of forces attempted to turn to the southwest, and fight towards Inhalo, however, the KFF held. A major defeat for the government's coalition, although the KFF could not counter effectively enough to grab more land. The Kitara Freedom Front, while largely holding their lines over the course of the last year, is seen by most observers to be nearing a breaking point. "The KFF is simply going to be running out of fighting resources very, very soon." An unnamed analyst said from the Banijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, remaining unnamed since he lacked permission to speak to NYK Watch about the conflict. "It's worrying for any freedom-loving people. The KFF has proven itself to be tough as nails, and capable of holding their lines. But how are they going to keep this up? Their ability to sneak new weaponry into the country, with the blockade and the no fly zone, has slowed almost to a crawl. Even Kitaran organizations in San Ortelio are mostly supportive of the Government, so smuggling weapons from there is difficult. They can manufacture their own- but they face weariness. These guys are not professional soldiers- morale is extremely low."

The ability of the KFF to remain in the fight for much longer will be something that is watched much more closely by international observers. There are rumors that Malik Akongo's inner circle has begun to realize this- but even the unnamed analyst would not confirm if rumors were true that the KFF had reached out to their primary benefactors in Banija to try and reach a peace settlement.

The DFLK

The DFLK is still being led by Mayor Max Ulf. However, there has been a turn in fortunes away from the DFLK, and towards the KPWC on the northern front. A DFLK attack to gain a foothold on the Kitaran mainland out west, towards the Tikariot border, briefly succeeded for about a month. But KRF troops, alongside Nepharan soldiers, launched a counter-attack out west to regain lost lands from the DFLK. And then, of course, KRF and Nepharan troops pushed north. While the southern front is fairly quiet at this point, the northern front, especially on the western peninsula on the Tikariot border, is the source of most of the war's hot fighting right now. The KRF and the Nepharans are trying to gain control of that peninsula.

As for the DFLK out East, it is a different story. A large counter-attack by combined KRF, Nepharan, and Euran troops helped push the DFLK back off of the mainland, and the combined forces re-captured Karora from the DFLK, in a major victory for Government forces. While the primary peninsula the DFLK is on seems basically inpenetrable at the moment, it puts the DFLK at a crossroads- there are some that are losing faith in the DFLK's ability to win this war outright.

Ultimately, while the full weight of foreign forces is not felt against them like it is against the KFF, there are rumors spreading through media that the DFLK believes that it has enough cache to win some sort of peace settlement. "The DFLK understands that it is very unlikely that they can be defeated completely, without a sustained bloody campaign against them." The same unnamed source from the Banijan Foreign Ministry said. "Their leverage is the amount of land that they hold. Can they reform Nyowani Kitara? Do they believe that Nafuna Akongo is worth negotiating with? But there is an understanding there, that their ability to simply win this war outright, is unlikely. Nafuna Akongo has embarassed herself multiple times, especially with Ulf's attempted assassination, and DFLK forces have spilt plenty of Nepharan and Euran blood, but as long as those countries are committed to Nafuna Akongo, they are unlikely to fall."

It is believed that the DFLK would support negotiations that work towards a peace settlement, but they of course lack a primary international benefactor to vouch for them to get a seat at the table, unlike the KFF or the KPWC. It is believed that they will use all the leverage that they possibly can, aka defending their land holdings, unless they get that seat at the table.

KPWC

The Government is in a good position- but it is almost universally considered to be propped up by Euran and Nepharan forces. "If Nephara and Eura didn't launch their joint intervention into this war, putting not only dollars and diplomatic heft, but their own blood and treasure on the line, it is likely that Nafuna Akongo's government would have fallen at this point." This is a point that is agreed upon by many international observers. The KRF, while always having a serious numerical advantage, has never been known as the best fighting force. Nepharans particularly are believed to have been integrated deeper into the military command of the KRF.

Like discussed above, the Government has made gains on both the northern and southern fronts. Nafuna Akongo, now aged 21, has been slowly building more confidence as a leader. There are, of course, plenty of international relations she has to repair. And after Græntfjall's attempted assassination of the President, her relations are at an all-time low with her northern neighbor. With their attempted assassination, alongside Gustav Isaksson's courtcase in that country, the anti-Græntfjall rhetoric has reached almost fevered pitches in Nyowani Kitara. The anti-Banijan rhetoric is high up the list too. The Government even held flag burning ceremonies of the flags of both nations.

While they are in a good position militarily, they are warily watching the Gustav Isaksson trial in Græntfjall with trepidation. Isaksson is the insider's insider- and it is unclear how much will be revealed, or what he will say. Depending on any testimony given up North, especially testimony that he gives himself, could do some serious public relations damage to the KPWC. Of course, state controlled media is already attacking the trial before it begins, and the state has an official demand that Gustav Isaksson should be returned to his native country 'as soon as possible'.

It is unclear if Nafuna Akongo is open to any sort of peace settlement, like the DFLK and the KFF seem to be. There has been lots of overturn at their Foreign Ministry as she has grown more confident in her role as President of the Republic, so that is clouded in mystery. What is clear, though, is that at this point, thanks to her Euran and Nepharan friends, she is the only one with the ability to win this war outright.

Expectations won’t be a problem for the Solderan national football team as they get set to start the group stage of the 39th Copa Rushmori. Not when they open the competition by facing one of the most storied football programs in the multiverse in Cassadaigua. For manager Norm Carricker, the start couldn’t get much worse for his team.

“Talk about a difficult match for us right off the bat,” he said. “We know the odds of us going out there against the Fillies and getting a result are extremely long. I’d be lying if I told you we had any chance on paper of doing it.”

But the thing Carricker pointed out is they don’t play matches on paper. His team, even though it’s extremely young except for 35-year-old captain Joey Westway is a collection of scrappy individuals, and he said he expected them to outwork everyone on the pitch. And if they don’t?

“We’ve got five substitutions and I’m not afraid to use ‘em if I need to send a message,” he said. “I’d rather go down to nine field players than have players out there who don’t give it their all.”

Carricker said the team’s youth was by design.

“The Solderan Football Association wanted young players who were hungry and were the best able to become a full-on team,” he said. “For us to be able to get football off the ground in this country, we need to be able to rally our countrymen around this team. And the best way we can do that is to present a unified team and at least put forth the kind of effort we want out there every time.”

Westway announced at the press conference that this would be his only competition unless Soldera signed up for the Baptism of Fire Cup and the World Cup, and somehow were to earn a trip to either the proper or the Cup of Harmony.

“I’m not exactly a kid and I've had two torn ACLs in the past five years,” he said. “There’s only so much left in the tank.”

The other matches in the group stage may not be as difficult on their face as the one against the Dagans, but Carricker said his team’s position as being a low-ranked side made it so that every match was going to present long odds to the Snakes.

“We’re not in a position to take any matches for granted,” he said. “So I’d better see max effort for everyone out there.”

Concerns worry Pioneers Football team
excerpt from http://www.swensports.swe

HISPANIS - A new team is seeing the day for the first time this year as the Pioneers of the SWEN national football team look forward to playing their first international. the team is essentially brand new after the SWENFA has essentially gutted the team following a failure to get to either the World Cup nor the Cup of Harmony. It also didn't help that the corp parts of the team were aging rapidly with players like the Bourne brothers and Mark Martz-Marx both pushing 35. That being said there are a few holdovers from the WCQ 89 team. Chris Houton is an ageless wonder and pushing 40 he recently signed a new deal with noted big spenders Oasis Blur FC and still retains a spot on the NT after there were many reports that he could retire but the oil money behind Oasis said no.

A but of concern has been mounting behind coach Rox. the young 29 year old will be coaching his third Copa Rushmori and is one of the young brilliant minds in footballing in the multiverse. Coach Rox is also known as a complete nut job and a tin foil wearing, conspiracy theorist. Coach Rox has openly stated that he thinks that the Banijan FA has intentionally blocked them from gaining qualification to the Cup of Harmony as "punishment for a draw in the opening leg that lead to Banija failing to qualify for the World Cup". There have been many investigations into this on the side of Southwest Eastnorth's investigative sports media yet nothing came up even after an interview with Banija's FA head had deemed the rumor untrue. But here we are a year and a half later and SWEN's coach is still thinking there's an anti-SWEN conspiracy. But this is the same coach that still thinks Savojarnia and Tikariot conspired against SWEN to knock them out of the group stages six years ago, another anti-SWEN myth that has already been dubunked by media's worldwide. For coach Rox the games will be tough and will the SWENFA tolerate his constant bitching for much longer? Only time will tell Pasarga is one of the best Niwoni Kitara are as the media says probably bonding with coach Rox over their anti-Banija stance and even young Ardengrad looks promising. So time will tell how SWEN will do.

The Bollonischian National Football Team

The Bollonischian Football Federation

Football is by far the most popular sport in Bollonich and it’s that sport which along with a die hard fanbase also has a good number of casual fans. The attention football on a whole gets in Bollonich is simply unreal as the TPL pulls some of the largest viewership for any TV programme on a whole. Football has not always had this status of high regard in Bollonich. During the medieval ages, the Empire in fact was very critical of football viewing it as an insult to bourgeoisie, pushing for more ‘civilised’ sports such as cricket and tennis. The Empirical rule managed to largely suppress football as a sport, by introducing bans on professional teams and disbanding local leagues. This led to the majority of the working class to partake in other time passes, and sportsmen and women moved onto to other well funded sports.
After the founding of the Republic and inevitable overthrowing of the ruling class, the sporting hierarchy was at its most polarising. Football was largely at the bottom with being a professional footballer being a pipe dream. This however was to change over the decades as foreign motivation in a largely football dominated area meant that Bollonischian slowly started integrating football back into their lives as an essential part. This process despite being slow has resulted in the current following for football which is the largest in the history of the sport in the country.

The Bollonischian National Football Team represents the nation of Bollonich at international footballing events such as the World Cup, Cup of Harmony and Copa Rushmori. The Bollonischian National Team made their official debut at World Cup Qualifying 88 against Al Qurija. The National Team had a very successful campaign in WCQ 88 finishing 5th in Group 6 ahead of teams like Sannyamathland, Rangers FC and North Japan. We also defeated the pot 1 seed in our group, Zwangzug 1-0 away and held them to a 0-0 draw at home. After a very successful World Cup Qualifying our side travelled to Græntfjall to participate in the Even Frostier Cup where we were paired into Group P with Baggieland, Barunia and hosts Græntfjall. In our first game we defeated Baggieland 2-1 however two consecutive defeats in the next matches sent us straight out of the Even Frostier Cup. After taking part in the 80th Cup of Harmony the Bollonischian footballers made their way to Mytanija to participate in the Copa Rushmori. Starting the tournament in style with a 4-4 draw against Darmen the rest of the tournament went downhill we suffered defeats to both San Ortelio and Sargossa failing to qualify for the Round of 16. The National Football Team returned to international foray with the 89th World Cup Qualifiers aiming to repeat our heroics from the 88th edition. And repeat our heroics we did, as we had a fabulous World Cup Qualifying campaign which was of a very crazy nature. We not only improved on our performance two year ago, we also caused major upsets defeating group winners on the last matchday. The team showed its metal in our meteoric rise in international football finishing fourth in our qualification group making important improvements. Heading into the end of the WC cycle, we travelled to Sylestone to take part in the 81st Cup of Harmony. Having been drawn into a rather difficult group with WC88 participants Jeruselem, WC22 winners Sarzonia, Trolleborg who would go on to win this Cup of Harmony and Hapilopper. We had our work very much cut out in this group, however we failed to deliver on the expectations of the fans and board. It was a catastrophic display for a nation eager to be battling at the front. Losses to Jeruselem, Sarzonia and Trolleborg weren’t exactly the best results too. The impact of this set of bad results and very slow progress would be very deep in the team. Bollonischians are an impatient bunch and this is clearly visible in the Football Federation, which embodies a very pragmatic approach to the managerial staff of the National Team. Opting to replace the entire the managerial staff would’ve come as a surprise for most fans however the appointment of a more experienced manager could definitely massively benefit the team.

Squad

Goalkeepers
#1 Sean Halliday (33) SC Lagos
Halliday is the outright starter for the national team, receiving tough competition from the younger keepers however the coaching and technical staff is always ready to back him with his hunger for victory and impressive skill. Halliday will be making his debut for the Bollonischian National Team in the Copa Rushmore after having represented the Sylestonean National Team.

#33 Sirigu (23) Vreton United
Sirigu having been the regular NT goalkeeper unto CoH 81, suddenly found himself at a different place. He was now the number two behind Halliday who would be representing Bollonich for the first time as the Sylestonean National Team refused to participate in the Campionato Esportiva. Sirigu will be looking to play those rare matches in between, eagerly awaiting his opportunity to get back on top.

#41 Frederico Valvi (21) Avondale City FC
Valvi’s position in the squad has also taken a hit as he only travels with the team as a formality keeper now, ready to take up the posts in case things go horribly wrong. Valvi’s growth might have to take a hit due to this as he was putting up a very good fight against Sirigu for that first keeper position. A fight which seems to have come to a halt as both will be gasping for match time on the international level.

Defenders
#2 Gerard Ingit (c) (33) Vreton City FC
Ingit is one of the most experienced players on the squad who has escaped the new managerial staff’s exclusion of a lot of the older players. He retains the arm band, as his position as the leader of the team has been cemented even further with him spearheading a very capable defensive structure. He’s also effectively the oldest player on the squad as he’ll need to keep delivering good performances to convince the staff to keep him on.

#3 Mitchell Stevenson (25) West Akusha CF
Stevenson is a strong defender, not afraid to hold his own against the best of forwards. His physical features make him a perfect defender and his inclusion in the team is no surprise. His exploits to reach the Sylestonean National Team and with the team are impressive that his exclusion would be a massive shock even if his inclusion is at the cost of one of the best centre backs in the country.

#19 Jeremy Ploy (29) Vreton United
Ploy is a driven, stoic character often described as a man of few words. Ploy likes to keep to himself with very few interactions with the media. However something that people cannot question is the intent he brings to the team and the squad. While his place outside the starting XI will hurt, he’ll be even more inspired to regain that top spot. He’s no stranger to adversity and is in fact known to overcome it under any circumstances.

#37 Pierce Patrick (22) Vreton United
Pierce is a young, Bollonischian defender playing for Vreton United who’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime by the new staff to show his worth on the field. He was part of the strong Bollonischian DBC 51 side, and his exploits in the tournament were more than enough to convince the staff to take a gamble on this young one leaving out experienced names such as Klingto and Vishwa.

#4 Sylvester Lindsey (30) Vreton United
Lindsey fits the perfect job description of what’s needed in this vital yet often unseen position of the field. Lindsey is responsible for a lot of the activity on the right wing and protecting it. Lindsey is an experienced player in the squad, crucial in being one of those among many players to guide and lead young and growing players under their supervision.

#22 Lexie Rimmer (21) Real Pablo FC
Lexie is a product of Real Pablo’s very competitive academy, known to have produced some of the best Bollonischian players ever. Rimmer too put up an impressive display in the DBC showing the youthfulness of Bollonischian football. She will have an important backup role to play, filling in for Lindsey in case he suffers from any injuries as such. She also has been under the apprenticeship of Lindsey to develop her game further.

#18 Bobby Burns (25) SC Lagos
Burns performs a similar role to Lindsey on the opposite wing. The combination of these two players on the wings forms a very strong partnership which provides the side with quite the threat heading down the wings. Burns isn’t the most stable or reliable in defence as he might occasionally let up, however on a whole his contributions towards the front of the field often makes up for his lack in defensive ability.

#24 Hadden Goodman (23) Vreton United
Goodman is a very reliable player providing the staff with options in how they want their tactics to work. Hadden is very impressive in defense while lacking on the front foot. He’s known to play second fiddle to Bobby however can step up, if and when needed. Lindsey’s versatility heading into both attack and defense is something which is lacking in both Burns and Goodman however their combination allows from greater tactical variety.

Midfielders
#5 Domenic Law (22) FC Maihar
Domenic Law is a young agile midfielder who prefers to focus on his defensive duties. Law is a young exciting new prospect providing vital fresh air to a midfield that was known to be quite stale up till now. His position in the team at the moment is under very little competition however young players like Fleming and Wheelock can push him to a good extent.

#8 Ed Douglas (21) SC Lagos
Ever since his debut for the National Team, Douglas has looked promising throughout and he’s delivered on this promise. His cemented position in the starting XI just pays dividend to the promise and talent he’s put on display for the side. His swift and agile movement combined with his passes and on spot thinking ability, he’s one of the most talented midfielders in the side today.

#6 Miles Hum (23) Vreton City FC
When talking about the young and exuberant midfield lineup, it’s hard to ignore the massive development on Hum’s side. Hum was already an integral part of Likhijo’s side playing in a role he wasn’t the most comfortable in however he still thrived in. In contrast to his midfield teammates he’s more balanced thriving in the best of both sides. His skill on the ball is truly a spectacle to watch with him giving the team much needed depth in the midfield department.

#10 Bryant Marshall (22) Virtus Redoccio
Rounding up a midfield with an average age of 22, is young footballing phenomenon Marshall who’s talent at such a young age has been a very hot topic of discussion. What hasn’t been a topic of discussion however is his place in the team which the number 10 wearer has completely earned in his own right. He is a skilled technical player down the middle of the field, and despite his task in the team taking a small turn, he’s contributions will be no less important.

#12 Alexis Fleming (22) Fermont United
Alexis Fleming has finally received her much deserved call up to the national team following impressive showings for some time now. Her arrival to the scene was a rapid one as she looked to be the next upcoming star. Appearances in friendlies were underwhelming as she struggled to get into the team for a major tournament or even World Cup qualifying having to settle for a place in the DBC squad. She however wasn’t ready to back down, putting up a great show in the DBC getting her selected for the team.

#20 Archer Wheelock (19) East Akusha CF
Wheelock got the call-up to the side last Copa Rushmori and since then he’s taken big strides in development of his game. His position and game time in the TPL for East Akusha has also come in very handy playing in the biggest stages of international football. Despite not being a starter for now, the future is bright for yet another talented Bollonischian midfielder.

#36 Luana Derricks (19) West Akusha CF
Luana Derricks’s road to the national team has been one of adventure, excitement and disappointment. She’s had some tremendous experiences in friendlies, youth competitions while also suffering the lows of youth stardom. She’s a matured, talented midfielder with immense ball control capabilities. She tends to play more aggressively than some might, however makes sure to never leave the defense hanging.

#26 Tad Rios (29) Vreton City FC
Rios is currently the most experienced player in the midfield, however fails to make the usual starting XI which shows how youth dependent the current side is. Rios however is known for pushing Marshall to an absolute limit with his cameos and collected nature in front of the goal. While his position in the team has come under scrutiny over some of the more recent negative results, the staff continues to have full faith in his talent as an experienced leader in the team.

Forwards
#9 Dennis Perry (vc) (31) Fermont United
Dennis Perry has by far been the most important player in the national team’s recent success in international competitions, success in terms of a team not yet up to the elite standard. Perry is not only clinical but also ruthless when it comes to his skill in front of the goal. His charismatic character along with his skilfulness and resourcefulness up front makes him a very likeable character of the national team.

#21 Linden Hayes (21) Signal Danin
Linden Hayes is a product of the youthful rejuvenation of an ageing Bollonischian national team. His involvement in the team from the very offset as he got into the stride of the team in fabulous fashion. He’s recently made the starter position partnering teammate and mentor Perry in the front of the attack as he’ll be looking to make a mark with this new staff and system of play for the national team. He’s agile with a good eye for opportunities shoot however needs to work on his decision making.

#13 Gia Knott (28) FC Maihar
By birth Grearish, Knott’s decision to represent Bollonich doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone as she’s a hugely talented Grearish player however with the disbandment of the team and the lack of any football opportunities in Grearia, she arrived in Bollonich in search of a domestic football career. And what she received was a home, making her place even to the national team. Her position despite having not being cemented in the starting Xi, it’s evident the staff plans on rotating her and Hayes around to see what sticks ahead of World Cup 90 Qualifying.

#11 Buck Moreno (19) Fermont United
Buck Moreno is a fast, rapid winger who’s dribbling skills are pretty much incomparable to anyone else in the team. He’s very often shown how rapidly he can make his way around defenders with little to no effort. His role on the right hand side of the field has been huge as he now finds himself in a tough spot with a requirement to adapt is he’s to stay relevant. What helps him in his goal of regaining top spot in the team however is his versatility due to which he’s equally potent down middle too.

#7 Stuart Schmit (23) Vreton City FC
Stuart is relatively well experienced for a player his age having established his spot in the team under Likhijo. This establishment has since then come under scrutiny with multiple players not retaining their places and that’s exactly what happened with Schmit as he no longer fits the system just like it’s needed. This makes his role exceedingly difficult in the squad despite good showings.

Playing Style
The team has evolved massively from Likhijo’s balanced style of offensive play. With sweeping changes in the formation and the roles of individual players, strategy has taken a huge turn. Moteudi the new manager hasn’t hesitated in completely resetting the team’s ethos. He’s modified the formation into a suitable 4-1-2-1-2 narrow formation. This works on the idea and basis of greater midfield control which he prides in his team having. Moteudi has also made significant changes to the attack up front, shifting to two strikers replacing the wingers used by Likhijo. This lack of players up front on the wings brings the abilities of Burns and Lindsey to the forefront in moving the ball forward and putting in some crosses. This also is the main justification for picking Burns over Goodman as we’ve seen how both are very similarly matched in terms of performance. The defensive structure has also hence seen some change as Doenic Law the player in the defensive midfielder position will have to play a more important role at the back of the field to provide the solidity needed. In the midfield, Douglas and Hum’s main and basically only task is to give us the strong hold in midfield so as to control possession and outplay our opponents. Marshall will act as the link between the midfield and attack looking to feed some balls into the strong forward line. Marshall will also see his roles changed as he will take upon the role of the provider than the second hand man of Perry in front. The role of this second hand man has now been taken up by Hayes who’ll be eager to have a good start in the team, cementing his position.

With the first matchday of the Copa Rushmori tomorrow, The Arden Guardian brings to its readers the profiles of some of the big names to look out for in the Ardengardian lineup.

Player Profile:

Name: Jalio Kalio Mao

Age: 20

Gender: Male

Date of birth: 1st of March, 2001.

Place of birth: Messitun, Ardengard.

Height: 5’ 6’’

Weight: 68 kg

Distinctive features: Tattoo of a dragon on his neck

Preferred position: Striker (Forward)

Domestic Team: Atletski Messitun (APL)

Bio: Born into a middle class family in Messitun, Jalio Kalio Mao was admitted to Amethyst City School at the age of three. It was on the school field where he was first introduced to the sport of football. He soon became engrossed with the game – playing with his friends whenever he could and watching matches on the TV when he couldn’t. The football-in-charge at Amethyst saw glimpses of Jalio’s raw talent in junior school, and encouraged his parents to help in his training. This was followed by rapid growth in his skill and understanding of the game. He made the school team starters the very year he was eligible for it. He led the team to victory numerous times when he became captain a few years later.
With the kind of talent Julio had and the noise he was making in school football tournaments, it was difficult to not get spotted by scouts searching for fresh youth. He was first picked up by selectors of the U-18 National Team. After a couple of entertaining displays as a substitute, he moved up to a permanent starter for the team, along with fellow NT forward – Shahee Firdos. Though the team itself did not reach very far in any tournament, Julio was identified as a potential wunderkind, and signed up by the Atletski Youth Academy. Though a slow start at first, it wasn’t long before the Academy’s training started to show on him and he worked wonders for Atletski Messitun–B. He was soon promoted to the A team, and selected for the U-20 national side at the age of 18. His first year at Atletski, though promising, was not exactly what the manager had hoped he would bring to the team. It seemed as if the fire with he had played before had been extinguished. However, the second year showed precisely why he was the Number 10 of a top side in the league. He blasted his way to securing the Top Scorer award, Atletski just losing out on bagging Winner. In the same year he made his National Team debut. Though he was mainly on the bench, short cameos here and there showed that his future was going to be bright.

Hopes for the tournament: Having earned the Number-10 Shirt for the national side as well, Jalio’s aims in the Copa Rushmori will be less oriented towards securing his place in the side and more towards getting his team as far as possible. His skill on the ball and ability to accelerate whenever he has space in front of him will be key to Coach Dent’s plans for the team. Jalio will be looking to get as many balls in the net as he can, working closely with the flanks and midfield to do so.

Name: Shahee Firdos

Age: 22

Gender: Male

Date of birth: 21st January, 1999

Place of birth: Baxlog, Ardengard.

Height: 5’ 7’’

Weight: 70 kg

Distinctive features: Curly brown hair

Preferred position: Right wing (Forward)

Domestic Team: Serumpur FC (APL)

Bio: The NT RW currently experiences a life of relative wealth and luxury. However, if he scrolled back twenty years, his life was not that easy. At the age of just two, Shahee Firdos had become the only child of a widow, with just enough income to keep a roof above their heads and bread in their stomachs. School was a distant dream for Shahee. He spent his mornings going around and doing odd jobs around the neighbourhood. Together they managed to keep themselves afloat. On days that were hard, they lined up at the Local Municipality to receive a free meal. In the afternoon, if all had gone well, Shahee went to the field to watch other children play football. Once, while watching from under a tree, he found a football lying among the weeds. With no-one around, he picked it up and took it home. He didn’t need to watch anymore, he could play. He had learnt enough from the children on the field to develop some skills himself. He perfected his shot accuracy by kicking the ball at a tree – hitting a particular point each time, till a circular patch developed there.
It was by chance that a football trainer at the Baxlog Youth Academy, walking past the street of house, saw the young kid practicing his self-devised drills. The exact details of the journey thereon have not been made clear by the player himself, but once he was good enough, he signed a contract with Serumpur FC Youth. His first recognition by the national selectors came at the U-18 level. None of his progress was smooth sailing for him. With limited financial backing, he needed as many sponsors as he could in order to make his way up the ranks. However, once he was recognised as a unique player on the national level, he could focus entirely on bettering his football. Excellent seasons with Serumpur FC and quite a few successful games with the national side sees him take the Number-30 and the expected starting RW in the Copa Rushmori.

Hopes for the tournament: Shahee’s aims in the tournament will be to get his assist tally as high as possible. Linking up with the midfield and playing into the centre will be the main play in most of his games. A number of goals should take him to at least ARG’s second highest scorer, and hopefully bring him into the light on an international level as well.

The Wanderers were a team that needed to freshen its ideas up a bit, pretty much anyone around the team knew this after the World Cup. The entire team had become entirely too inconsistent to be a real power, even if the WCC Rankings implied that they were one of the best teams not just in Rushmore but in the entire sport. Their qualifying campaigns over the last decade were not the material of a team that was in the upper echelons of the sport and there was a geniune feeling that their ranking was quite inflated, especially when put in a side by side comparison with their ranking in the regional tournament. Where the regional rankings put the team as the sixth best team in the region, the WCC Rankings would have had you believe that the Wanderers were battling for if not the very best team in the region. It was quite a bit of contrast and whiplash for anyone who was but a mere casual observer of the sport and not keenly attuned to the finer details throughout both the world and regional happenings.

As the team arrived in Hispinas, it came as no big surprise then that there was a new number one and most of the defense had been changed out in favor of more in form players at the domestic level, with a general youth movement being made. All the usual suspects from the best clubs in the SuperLiga were represented, with Tani, CAP, and Hellinic, as well as the usual inclusion from the defensive powerhouses that are Duke of the North. Rudy Yáñez was the surprise starter on the left, having won titles in two different nations over the last three seasons, seeing his stock rise high especially with being five years the junior of the more expected starter in Vass. The upside of Yáñez looking to be quite high, perhaps even in the vague proximity of being an elite defender, a rare treat among Pasargans. While Pasargans were by no means slouches on the defense, few defenders have been above very good and into the elite category, with the most notable exception being Jessica Weiss. Yet Yáñez looked to have that sort of potential to really be in among the best in the world.

However the Wanderers' strength always comes from either the midfield or in the attackers and this team was no different, with the elite winger of Vojmil Topić and budding star striker Elek Salai being the most notable names in the front six. The academy at CA Paulinthal being the current breeding grounds of the Wanderers' best players, having supplanted Baskita who had been the go to academy for over a decade. With the growing amount of very to good to elite level amount of talent that either stayed on at the Hurricane or were developed at their academy and went on to become great players elsewhere and eventually for the national team really speaks of the growth that they have had in that department over the last two decades. What needs to happen now is for that very good to elite talent to show up consistently for the national team and take that power within the team to lead the rest of the players to greatness.

It will not be easy in the upcoming Copa however as the budding power of Nyowani Kitara having been drawn into the group, having showcased themselves quite well in the prior World Cup, despite the depths of civil strife and warfare that is afflicting their nation. It is truly remarkable that the team they have is able to come together in that way with so much going on in their home nation, although that is part of the beauty of sport, it allows a bit of escapism and for ninety minutes the entire world is gone along with all of its problems. They will be quite the test for the Wanderers, to see if they are over their post World Cup hangups and ready to try to reconcile the World Cup rankings with the regional rankings. However routine difficult out of Southwest Eastnorth are in the group, as well as a team that no one in the dual islands has any clue about in the form of Ardengard, It all starts tomorrow for the Wanderers and if they can get a result, it will be a huge step towards that goal.

When a national federation makes a decision to start a predominantly young team against teams of experienced opponents, outings like Soldera’s match against Cassadaigua are hardly a surprise.

Cassadaigua completely outclassed Soldera in every phase of the match in a 4-2 victory that demonstrated conclusively to manager Norm Carricker that his team had a lot of work to do.

“We were definitely given an education out there,” he said. “Cassadaigua are the top ranked team in the region, they’re highly ranked in the football playing multiverse, they’re a world class organization and they proved that in every measurable possible.” The Dagans jumped out to a 4-0 lead just 18 minutes in, forcing Carricker to make his first substitution in goal as the fourth tally, by forward Madison McClain resulted in chasing goalkeeper George Rollings from between the pipes. Carricker sent on Jeff Bannister to finish out the match and he kept the Fillies off the scoresheet after the damage had long since been done.

“You can’t blame Rollings for that,” central defender Chuck Ingram said of Rollings, who failed to make a single save amid “tremendous” pressure by the Dagan attack. “We didn’t give him an opportunity to succeed.” Soldera got onto the scoreboard first in the 72nd minute when midfielder Joey Westway was fouled just outside the 18-yard box for a direct free kick. Matt Conley’s tally ensured that the Snakes wouldn’t slither out of the stadium the victims of a clean sheet. Conley would set up the next tally in the 89th minute as he found fellow striker Lisa Allyson, who was sent on to provide an offensive spark.

“It was embarrassing,” team captain Westway said of the Solderan effort. “Cassadaigua’s pedigree speaks for itself, but we didn’t do ourselves any favors out there.” The road doesn’t get a whole lot easier from there as 13th ranked Valladares are Soldera’s next opponents. The group stage closes with Oberour Ar Moro who are ranked 23rd.

“You’d like to feel optimistic that we’ll be able to pull off an upset and get a result somewhere, but I don’t see how,” a dejected Rollings said after the match. Carricker said he would start Bannister against Valladares and hinted third choice keeper Nestor Gomez would play against Oberour Ar Moro.

“We want to see everyone get an opportunity,” he said. “We want to find out what we’ve got here.”

MADE IN ASTOGRATH
GOALS FROM KOVACEVIC AND VUJOVIC GET MYTANIJA ON THEIR WAY

by Nevenka Planinc

MYTANIJA 2-0 TAKESHWAR
MYT: Kovacevic 14’, Vujovic 37’

MYT: 1. Besak; 3. Savicevic (sub. Jernejec 64’), 4. Mbala-Ekakia, 16. Kovacevic (sub. Ugljanin 79’); 13. Urankar, 7. Hrdaljko (sub. D. Ocokoljic 64’), 8. Smajic, 17. Vujovic; 10. J. Odonelec (c); 23. Zgela, 24. Gajic

That noise you can hear might well be the suits at the FAF screaming in anguish over in Rumiatzi as a pair of Astograth-born Mytanars sealed the three points for the land of their parents against Takeshwar. Astograth won their own opening game at the Copa Rushmori against Isle Noire, but there is likely some understandable disappointment that they couldn’t nip to the front of the queue ahead of the FSM for talented young players like Amar Kovacevic and Slobodan Vujovic. The former scored the opener on his international debut before Vujovic put Mytanija two goals to the good before half-time. A controlled performance might not have been the most exciting viewing but it got the Hoops off to a fine start just as Græntfjall – expected to be Mytanija’s main rivals for top spot in Group D – were being chastened by a 5-1 defeat to relative minnows Cabo Azure.

Amar Kovacevic was excellent on his international debut, happy to step out from the back and try to help the team in possession and assured in his defensive work too. Some will correctly assess that it was a match against limited opposition but it represents a solid start for the 22 year old and he will be more than happy with his performance. His much discussed aerial ability was on show for all to see as he rattled the bar inside the opening ten minutes, getting on the end of a Kemal Gajic corner and centimetres away from scoring on debut. He made-up for it a few minutes later, this time rising high to nod home from an Ermin Urankar free-kick wide on the left. It’s something he has done numerous times for the Mytanar under-21s and former club side East Railway, though the elation on display in his celebration perhaps demonstrated that this one meant a little more for him.

Ituraitz FC are getting a fine central defender who seems likely to have a big career ahead of him, he has a good relationship with Bigger Mbala-Ekakia from playing with the under-21s and the pair were solid on their side of the three-man defensive unit. Grigorij Savicevic was his usual faultless self on the opposite side, the number of competent central defenders the country has produced over the last few years perhaps makes it the strongest position for Lev Repin to choose from at the minute. Kovacevic was withdrawn with just over ten minutes to go with Andrija Ugljanin coming on and the embrace with Lev Repin demonstrated just how pleased the manager was with his young charge’s showing. He wasn’t getting carried away in post-game interview, though:

“I just told him that he’d done a solid job and that he could be proud of himself.” Repin explained. “Amar is going to be a big part of our group going forwards but he knows that he has a tough job to stay in the team with the players we have in that area of the pitch. I wanted him to dip his toe in the water here tonight but he knows that Dino Racic will be expecting to come straight back in once he recovers from his calf strain… That’s not even mentioning Kamil [Jernejec], Andrija [Ugljanin] or some of the lads we have sat at home. I’m pleased with my options in the centre of defence and it makes things competitive, all those lads know that if they don’t work hard there’s somebody ready to step up and take their place.”

No Ocokoljic and no Gannot was no problem for Mytanija as Dejan Zgela and Kemal Gajic slotted in up front. Where Ocokoljic and Gannot like to rotate who drops deep and who looks to get in behind there were more defined roles for Zgela and Gajic. Zgela is an Ocokoljic prototype, not quite as skilled as his national team colleague but tactically able to fulfil a very similar role. Kemal Gajic has pace to burn and this makes him a very useful runner in behind the opposition defence and it was clear to see from early on that this was what Repin wanted the pair to do. Those clear instructions meant that Mytanija’s second was a good demonstration of the attacking movement and positional play which has characterised much of Repin’s reign.

Zgela dropped into an attacking midfield position to receive the ball from Alen Hrdaljko and already Kemal Gajic was on his bike, spinning the left-sided centre-half to get into the space down Mytanija’s right flank. Zgela knew what the former winger was doing and immediately dinked a delightfully weighted ball into the channel for Gajic to run onto. This movement set Slobodan Vujovic off with the right wing-back stationed wide to maintain Mytanija’s attacking width, Gajic’s movement into a wide position was the signal Vujovic needed to move inside and his incisive run in between the Takeshwar left-back and left-sided central defender rather broke the Takeshwar defence. Gajic threaded a ball behind the left-back for Vujovic to run onto inside the penalty area and the Royal Rumiatzi man lashed the ball hard across goal and into the net. It was a tough finish and the goalkeeper perhaps should have done a little better but the movement to create the half-chance was straight from the training ground. It was almost clockwork.

“I was pleased to see that, it’s not always that way when you bring players in that don’t often play together. They aren’t as familiar with one another as the guys who usually start – some of those lads have played 50 or 60 games together, more in some cases – so it’s pleasing for the ones who haven’t got that familiarity to gel and carry out stuff we’ve worked on in the run-up to the tournament.” Repin said. “We want Kemal to get into wide areas where possible, he’s been a winger for much of his career and he knows how to play in those areas. It makes it more difficult for the opposition, too, not knowing where he might pop up next. I’m especially pleased with the intent from Slobodan, knowing to bomb on inside once Kemal had gone wide, that’s real tactical maturity from a young footballer.”

The rest of the game was an exercise in strangling the life out of a match for the Hoops. They kept possession well and might have been disappointed to not add a few more to make the score line look even more emphatic, but the nature of the performance will have been very pleasing as Takeshwar were not really given a sniff from the first minute until the last. Kamil Jernejec and Dusko Ocokoljic entered the fray just after the hour mark, providing Grigorij Savicevic and Alen Hrdaljko with some much-needed rest; whilst Andrija Ugljanin came on for Amar Kovacevic late on as already mentioned. Being able to rest the likes of Racic, Milcic, Patrik Odonelec, Jezdimir Ocokoljic and Gannot will have been a bonus for Lev Repin.

The Hoops have Cabo Azure up next and the nation which produced Olympic Thessia goalkeeper Ambrosio Gomez are coming off the back of what must be their best ever result, defeating Græntfjall 5-1 and thoroughly embarrassing the Pavolan nation. A win would more or less secure Mytanija’s progression through to the knockout stages and that would be the bare minimum expected from this group of players. That particular result does open the door for a much easier route to the group’s top spot, though, with Græntfjall nominally the group’s second seed behind Mytanija already having to play catch-up with the Hoops. Some of the sporting results (Olympic glory, VWE success and a first World Cup qualification in over twenty editions of the tournament spring to mind) in recent years have Mytanars dreaming of success once again, for the national football team success in the Copa Rushmori would be a good place to start. Topping the group would make that a little easier to achieve.

LM Medeiros (on 60')
LB Fernandez (on 75')
A cracking win over a much more experienced side, clearly demonstrating the virtues of Paulinho's system. The match started tentatively for the Maçaricas, with the sheer size and physicality of the Græntfjaller centrebacks rendering the Azurean front line unwilling or unable to penetrate the box. For once not the first-, second-, or third-tallest man on the pitch, talismanic target forward Montenegro initially had to rely on playing with the ball at his feet, never his best look.

The turning point seemed to come around twenty-five minutes, when Moniz dispossessed Sara and started a buildup which ended with a tap-in by Carriço as an unmarked runner in the box. From there the floodgates seemed to open: faced with a wide, cohesive Azurean attack aided by overlaps from Branco and de Lima, Björnólfur's longstanding communication problems came home to roost. The Græntfjaller keeper's frustration visibly mounted with each successive goal.

After finishing the first half down by three, the Snow Wolves managed to claw one back early in the second, as a good attacking run led to well-won corner. Antunes managed to tip the ball just over the crossbar, but the second time around there was no stopping Lara from finding the back of the net. Branco answered ten minutes later with a long chipper, and Montenegro scored his third in stoppage time to complete the rout.

Suddenly finding themselves atop the table, Cabo Azure will have to remain humble when facing Mytanija in the second match day. A win would almost certainly put them through to the knockout rounds of the Copa Rushmori, a mark they missed in their debut outing.

O Interregno pt 1 "The Portelo Dynasty"

The Portelo Dynasty began in 1287 when Sebastien di Portelo, the military leader of the Knights of St. Simon, declared himself “King of the Azure Islands”. The islands were sparsely populated when the knights arrived, a mostly stateless society of fishers and subsistence farmers. By the time of his death in 1301, di Portelo had consolidated the knights, their serfs, and the islands’ indigenous inhabitants into a proper kingdom. The crown passed to his son Timoteo, and the lineage continued nearly unbroken until the coup of 1979.

Historians differ on what specifically caused the coup, or when was the “beginning of the end” for the Portelos; some believe it was a slow decline, starting a century or more prior to 1979, while others hold that the royal family might have continued ruling unabated had certain events transpired differently. A common starting point when discussing the coup, however, is the death of Queen Isabella in 1948 from an aggressive form of breast cancer. Born 1905, Queen Isabella was almost twenty years younger than her husband King Reinaldo I and widely expected to outlive him.

Isabella’s death had a profound impact on the king, who became withdrawn and remained in the royal apartments for days at a time, drinking heavily and refusing visitors. Her death was also devastating for the couple’s only son, Reinaldo II, who was born in 1945 before his mother got sick. In 1957, the king was remarried to Carlotta del Viscio, a well-known socialite in the Sao Simone scene. The wedding was not as well-received as some in the palace hoped, and the announcement the following year that Queen Carlotta was pregnant did nothing to assuage the pernicious rumors that circulated about her. The couples’ first and only child, Princess Abigail, was born in November 1960 to relatively little fanfare. After years of declining health related to hypertension and cirrhosis of the liver, King Reinaldo I died in 1969, and his son Reinaldo II was crowned.

Having lost his mother at a young age and been reared mainly by unprepared servants while his father struggled with grief, Reinaldo II was widely seen as unhinged and unfit to rule. He consolidated power in the monarchy, revoking powers that had been delegated to the Assembly by his father and grandfather, effectively reverting Cabo Azure to an absolute monarchy. Though he faced significant opposition for doing so, none of the powers granted to the Assembly or the court system were ever enshrined in a constitution, and so he was effectively within his rights.

Resistance to Reinaldo II was broadly-based and gave opposing factions common cause. In 1974, the king survived an assassination attempt by a member of the Citadel Guards, the elite unit of the Azurean National Guard charged with his protection. Investigations by the police and intelligence services revealed a far-reaching plot to place Princess Abigail, Queen Carlotta’s daughter, on the throne as a figurehead for a more democratic government. In response, Reinaldo II annulled the marriage between his father and Queen Carlotta, effectively removing his step-mother’s royal status and declaring his half-sister a bastard in order to weaken her claim to the throne.

Clara STERN, Minister for Defence [Nationals]
Medina KLOSE, Minister for Foreign Affairs [Nationals]
Anselm CROKER, Head of NSIA
Jade HORVATH, Head of DoTFA
Marshal Claire BERGERON, Head of Armed Forces
General Morgan LEANDER, CO of CROWBAR

It had been a bruising year and a half for Margravine Lindt, but she was on the verge of vindication, she knew it.
The election had been perfectly timed, slotted in just as boots hit the ground, before people could really gauge what they thought about getting mixed up in another war. Well, they didn't like it, once there. The people never did. The people were fickle, as ever. No sense of the long game when there were coffins flying home. Hard, utlimately, to blame them.
She bit a nail. "Where the fuck is Medina?"
Horvath, her head diplomat, checked her watch. "Still six minutes before we're due..."
"Should be early."
"She's punctual."
"Punctual, hah. There's a war on." She shifted in her chair for the thousandth time. She looked like hell. Natural, after throwing herself harder and harder into her work; at first she'd stress-eaten, now she was skipping meals, which gave her a rather uneven look at present. Her eyes were faintly bloodshot. "Punctual's the bloody minimum, we can-- we should be doing better than that-- ah, Medina!" She clapped. "Finally. Finally."
Klose looked bewildered as she took her seat. "I'm early," she said, plaintively.
"Are we ready to begin?" Croker asked.
Bergeron, the highest-ranking military figure in the country and best described as not yet charged for war crimes, rolled her eyes. "Let's just get this over with."
"Then I'll begin." Croker stood. "I'm sure you've all read the dossiers we've prepared, so I'll get right into the presentation..."

18-MONTH ASSESSMENT of CROWBAR
Operation Crowbar launched with five 'Ls', or pillars of the plan. This report seeks to evaluate outcomes and suggest next steps.

1. LIFT CHAOS
First and most important: the armed intervention has restored order to at least some of Nyowani Kitara. The fronts have solidified, and while they remain a perilous environment, there is at last a modicum of peace within the inner areas of Kitara, and it is our belief that our efforts to keep fighting out of residential areas and work with local populations has been noted, for which immense credit is due the efforts of General Leander. The obvious exception is the southeast, however, which still appears in thrall to their old KFF masters. Our policy of allowing dissent and formal protest has successfully eased some of the pressure, as best as could be hoped for.

2. LIMIT COMPLICATIONS
A qualified success. For the most part, no nation has interfered too greatly, though not for want of trying. Genuine foreign aid has been welcomed, though often - such as with the EU - coming with passive-aggressive warnings against us. Most critically, the nightmare scenario of opening fire on Banijan or Graentfjaller forces has not come to pass.

3. LEASH AKONGO
The least successful aspect of the plan thus far. Nafuna appears untamable, and the attempted breakout of Gustav Isaksson, who is and remains disowned by the official party line, was an unmitigated disaster. Sending Isaksson in the first place was bad enough, but it appears we cannot rely on her to learn. Nevertheless it would not be our recommendation to proceed with Contingency Scholarsmate.

4. LEVERAGE KPWC
Believed to be a success. While our forces have helped trained the KRF to something almost approaching respectability, they remain dysfunctional. While advised, supported and scaffolded, they could retain a hold on national security, and contribute to the security of an election, but we believe it is reasonably clear they could not survive without us. Indeed, they are weaker than we first believed; without our decisive influence the war would likely have been lost. If we cannot rely on gratitude, we can at least be sure to have it, for whatever little it is worth.

5. LAY WASTE TO OPPOSITION
Another qualified success. The largest force, TF TISIPHONE, was able to destroy the KFF presence in the southeast, crushing them against the San Ortelian border; TISIPHONE have now joined up with TF ALECTO in pressing the remaining KFF in the southwest. TF MEGAERA, meanwhile, was not spared what we hoped - a battle over Karora - but our expertise in urban warfare did allow us to ultimately seize the city.

CONTINGENCIES
As ever, we retain a number of strategies for if the situation should shift from its stable equilibrium. Please refer to the full dossier on each contingency plan for full details; this is merely a summary of where we stand with them now.

Cutoff - While the Euran will to contribute is believed to have eroded somewhat over time, it remains deeply unlikely they would break any promises and leave Nephara stranded. Improvements in our own logistical capabilities over the past two years should make us far less reliant on foreign goodwill.
Thunderdome - At this point it is exceedingly unlikely an opposing power will make landfall.
Setback - With the no-fly zone in place and no further foreign interference, chances of serious military reverses are close to nil provided no fatal overextensions are made (e.g. an assault on Viljan).
Foolsmate - After an almost-successful assassination attempt, redoubled security measures have been put in place to prevent Nafuna Akongo's untimely demise. Increased Nepharan influence in the KRF ranks mean that we would likely retain a measure of control without her.
Scholarsmate - Akongo remains a stabilising influence, however distasteful. Her death is unlikely to benefit us, and we should not seek to accelerate that process.

RECOMMENDATION
It has been long, drawn-out and ugly, but Operation Crowbar can be considered a success. Little prospect remains of a DFLK or KFF victory. It is the recommendation of DoTFA that Corvistone make arrangements to force all parties to the negotiation table - especially with the DFLK. Outside the borders of Nyowani Kitara, international relations with Busukuma and Hattmark will need to be repaired, and perhaps even with Bastion.

Croker's presentation showed that NSIA essentially agreed with the conclusions the DoTFA - the Directorate of Trade and Foreign Affairs - had drawn. The war had run its course, though they of course had to maintain the current pressure on both factions.
"So..." Klose leaned forward in her seat, putting both elbows on the table as she looked around. "All in agreement, then? The end's in sight?"
Leander snorted. "'All'."
"You don't agree, General?"
The commander of the forces in Nyowani Kitara grinned mirthlessly. "I do. But you know Suzi won't."
"Uh... Suzi?"
"Our little nickname, for our little joke." Leander leaned back in their chair, picking at their teeth. "Nafuna's not gonna go for it. Nafuna's not gonna go for anything. She wants-- above all, she wants Papa Gustav back and Malik's head on a fucking pike. Actually, she wants the world. We put up peace terms, she'll probably demand Busukuma."
"Tough shit," said Bergeron. "Life's full of disappointments."
"You know that. I know that. Nafuna's special. That ... stunt trying to bust Isaksson out. She can't be trusted. We can never trust her. And she will - I can guarantee you she will demand Malik's death."
"She did two years ago," mused the Margravine. "It was an easy promise, then. But the situation's--"
Klose looked over. "Wait, you promised her that?"
"-- changed, alright?"
"You promised to her you'd hang her brother? This is the first--"
"Another time, Medina," said Lindt sharply, in a very specific tone that actually meant, 'this will never be up for discussion, Medina'. "Nafuna can hang."
Leander's eyes lit up. "Promise?"
"What I mean is, her desires are irrelevant right now. Corvistone wants the war to be over. Dewayo can either disarm at the same time or their fronts will collapse."
"They don't even have the troops to hold what we've taken," said Leander.
"So just to be clear," said Horvath, "you're saying you want us to go over Nafuna's head."
"I know. It'll hurt her feelings. Maybe if we're lucky she'll even cry. But I'm saying we have to - to strike now," said Lindt, punching an open hand. "While the iron's hot but while there's still a war to win. Everyone's desperate for peace, and we control the balance of power. It's precisely as I'd hoped from the start. Now it's time to get what we want."
Silence reigned for a few seconds. It was hard to picture, the end of a war which had dominated their lives for the past years. Yet there it was, tantalising. In sight, at last, and perhaps even within reach.

Agreement was reached, and that lead to a final flurry of activity. The ambassador in Busukuma recieved a message, and passed it on up the chain; Corvistone wanted Busukuma's help getting the KFF to the negotiating table. In the north, undercover NSIA operatives managed to kick a message up the chain that if a ceasefire could be managed, Corvistone really did not have a single fuck to give who owned Port Viljan and its surrounds by the end of the war. Bastion were informed of the plans, given a chance to lodge objections or vetos... but the attitude up north seemed mostly to be, 'thank God this might finally be over'.
And so Margravine Lindt went out in front of all the cameras, and declared: "If the rebel factions agree to a ceasefire, then we can devote all our energies to the most pressing matter at hand; forging an enduring peace, and with it, a free and fair election. The Kitaran people shall decide Kitara's future."
And when it was all said and done, she sat in her office, awaiting the inevitable call from Nafuna Akongo, who she had thoroughly thrown under the bus on the public stage, breaking every possible rule of international diplomacy in the process. The thought brought a smile to her face, and all she could think was: that's how it feels, you selfish little queenling.

Victory over Ardengrad popular and yet not so much.
excerpt from http://www.swensports.swe

HISPINAS - A very brutal game of football took place in Hispinas, one that was contested by the solid pieces of the Pioneers football team and also contested by the young upstarts of Ardengrad. It ended up one of the biggest meme games of all time for the SWEN's as the 7-4 game saw two red cards from the promising but unrefined upstarts and a near comeback from them too. But with that game done, the Pioneers got off to a huge start with Ardengrad garnering several penalties. Chris Houton, despite his age looked on form for the Pioneers, he got a hat trick and at 39 he has to be one of the oldest to do so in regional competition of those who are human and not eldritch abominations. In just one half the Pioneers garnered the attention and fear of the three fellow nations in their group as they went up 5-0 on Ardengrad by half. A flurry of goals including two from defender Jace Arnold.

Ardengrad themselves got into a lot of trouble with the refs, this is what lead to the two goals from Ardengrad as he successfully got scores on both PK attempts. And three more contributions from Chris Houton who garnered a hat trick. His two goals in 10 minutes were a first for SWEN in the CR too. The game wasn't without a scare from Ardengrad as they did get on the board with three goals in 10 minutes but that was stopped immedeately after a Hank Vipen red gave the Pionners another PK and scoring oppurtunity.

Next up is Niwoni Kitara, a team that upset Pasarga 4-2 earlier. A tough team with a scarred past, this should be a fun matchup (as long as coach Jayson keeps his mouth shut.)

Savojar Roster for the 39th Copa Rushmori

TEAM

STAFF
Coach: Gylfi Haukason
Age: 57 // Coach since: WCQ 90 (OOC Note: by the Savojar calendar, Copa Rushmori happens between MD 7 and MD 8 of the WCQ that OOC’ly follows it)
With disappointing performances (two missed World Cups and a quarterfinal out in the Copa Rushmori), Daniella Strauss has lost much of her good will with the SFFB, and the Nepharan manager has not had her contract prolonged despite a Cup of Harmony final appearance. The SFFB returned to the domestic scene for her successor, and found its man in Gylfi Haukason. Previously coaching Admiral Storevik to a series of second and third places in the SFS A, he has now moved on to take the reins of the national side. Gylfi (like many Ejanans, he prefers to go by his first name) plays a balanced game, and has been able to overcome regular changes to his side at Admiral, which makes the SFFB believe he will be able to stabilise and reinvigorate a fledgling Savojar side.

Coaching Team: Pall Olason, Mikael Södergren, Lasse Tjoer
Ages: 50, 42, 45 // Special functions: Tactical and defensive coach, Technical coach, Physical trainer
Pall Olason has been Gylfi’s assistant at Admiral and followed his mentor and friend to the Northlights. He has been a libero in his active career and has been in charge of the defence at Admiral, but also plays a general more tactical role to Gylfi’s role of an emotional leader and mediator, although this is not a strict division of labour.
Mikael Södergren has a history of a technical assistant coach at various SFS A teams, including the surprising Rotor Värstjö side of SFS Season 8 and being on the staff of the double-winning Partisan side of SFS Season 10. His job is to run day to day practice and give technical advice to players; besides his work with the national team, he currently is a trainer at the National Football Academy at Högvald, where he coaches and develops Savojarna’s biggest youth talents.
Lasse Tjoer is the physical coach and condition trainer, and has previously worked for multiple SFS A teams. He places a lot of emphasis on discipline, but gives the players a large amount of freedom to tune their practice regime to their own tastes as long as they stick to the targets. He is quite popular in the team, and a good motivator.

Goalkeeper Coach: Valtteri Andersson
Age: 54
Andersson was a long-term goalkeeper for Energie Thorsborg and got directly transferred into the club's youth department when he retired at age 33. Following some good work with the club's youth department, he got trained as a GK coach and worked with the first team and the U21 of Energie for a while before being brought onto the squad of the NT early on. He still works with Energie on the side and is reputed to be very good at developing a goalkeeper's weaknesses.

Doctor: Dr. Christer Ljungberg
Age: 60
Christer is the head of the medical team of the Savojar NT and generally has a reputation of being the team’s good soul. Many players have come to him over the years to discuss their insecurities or physical problems, to the point that many consider Ljungberg to essentially be a second mental coach.

23 CB Roman Forsberg Olympia Borograd (STL) M 31

In goal the big name remains Iiro Pakanen, a rock between the posts with a calm demeanor and a stable, consistent style, as well as quick reflexes. He is complimented by the shorter, yet more aware and controlling Aleksandra Virulainen, the SFS’s top goalkeeper; Sergey Sharin is a third keeper who will be unlikely to see play. In defence, Polina Zirkova is the undisputed organiser of the central backs, with good skills with the ball on her feet and good eyes to spot buildup opportunities. She will likely be complimented by either the tall, strong header Dmitriev or the more defensive and calm Vidkun Nymark, or her old partner Roman Forsberg, another player who is good on the ball and likes to play out from the back. On the left side, Milla Viipuri and Matts Pedersen are likely to share playtime, with the former playing a more conservative, solid role and the latter being a dynamo on the left that can drive play forward more. Viipuri also can play on the right side, making her a more defensive option over the restless and offensive Flemming Skov, who usually starts on the right.

Ahead of this line, Gylfi prefers a double pivot consisting of a destructive classic holding midfielder in Otso Ilkkanen or Markko Niskanen, alongside the creative deep-lying playmaker Adrian Klaebo, a clever player who likes to use his splendid positional play to win balls and his game sense to spray them wide for wingers and strikers alike. With Victoria Maersk gone from the Savojar team, the role of a shuttler is now replaced mostly by Klaebo’s long balls, but remains present in 21 year old Vladimir Orakhin, a restless player who proved his value at FK Torpedo. Ahead of the two, the central midfield is completed by the ever-competing duo of of Poulsen and Lundell, two modern playmakers with capabilities to advance and score themselves (particularly in the case of Poulsen). Poulsen, with his greater versatility, is likely to get the nod over Lundell, who might run into conflict with the regista role filled by Klaebo.

The wings are traditionally the crown jewel of a Savojar side, featuring two-times Champions League winner with Directus and former member of the Galacticos 23 Mikhail Jashkin. He has been a rock for Savojarna with his combination of sly through balls from the side and quick runs towards the goal. On the left side, Gylfi will fall back on his former club player Krister Voynov, but has a powerful second option with Finn Östberg, who previously played in Taeshan and now at Lok Jarnstad. A two-way winger with a precise cross and a good defensive workrate, he shores up a side. On the right side, Kaisa Gyldenström serves as backup to Jashkin, a quick and technical player that is working hard in both directions, and has honed her physical condition in the gruelling second division of Nephara, and now reaps the fruits. She was also a part of the Cup of Harmony finalist team, having secured her position on the right side behind Jashkin.

Up front, Gylfi has a wide choice and went for three different types of players. Sven Ehlers has grown into a star player of this side and is the likely starter, a smart player who will try to create danger from between the lines as a hanging striker. Ehlers is rather short but quick, mobile, and a good linker as well as a good finisher. Besides him, Lars Alvesen will be continuing his rise to prominence with another strong season at Partisan, and further strengthening his physical capacity as he is now 20 years old. A physical finisher, he received the nod over Nweke. The third option this time is Victor Hedenberg, a sly striker with SFS A experience. He is tall but not as physically present as Nweke, less of a goal scorer and more of a player that tends to bring in his partner, winger, or offensive midfielder by playing balls backwards or sideways when there is an option. He also has a good sense of pressing and is likely to play defensive roles as well.

Team Personality
The Darmeni team will never argue with the referee. Indeed, if anything needs to be brought to the attention of the referee it will be done by either the Captain or Vice-Captain in a respectful manner (or to the fourth-official by the Manager). With regards to foul/dirty play, the Darmeni team will not provoke, or retaliate against any opposition player. Darmeni's expect each team to keep to itself and deal with its own trouble makers; any opposition player who attempts to prevent a conflict by pushing or pulling a Darmeni away from the scene will be promptly told off, as that is the duty of the Darmeni Captain.

Nonetheless, Darmen will play in a relatively aggressive manner. Tackles will be conducted in a way which ensures the opponent ends up on the ground, but causing injury will be avoided as much as possible. On set pieces, Darmenis will stand their ground and will not be easily pushed around, they will not however engage in hugging. In fact, if any opposing player tries to push past them, it is not uncommon for the Darmeni player to feign resistance before simply stepping aside and watching as the opposing player stumbles past on their way to ground. This occasionally backfires however, as the referee may mistake the incidence as having been a foul in the box.

The Euran Football Association’s Copa Rushmori 39 Squad

Manager: Skorji Oslograd (61, Eura)

As unlikely as it might have seemed not so long ago, Skorji Oslograd was been appointed the eighth permanent manager of the Euran national team in the modern era. The former Bastion, Hornchurch (season loan), FC Axel Heiburg and Revolutionaries centre forward is an icon of Euran football, starring in Eura’s World Cup 66 winning side at the height of an international career that saw him make 168 appearances for Eura, scoring 103 goals. Oslograd then went into coaching and management, where he had a low-key career until taking over as manager of The Askari Union. He improved them significantly and got them playing perhaps their best ever football at the Copa Rushmori, before moving to take over the national team job for the newly formed Euran Oceania Territories, who had only recently started competing in WCC competition.

Although Oslograd was unsuccessful in achieving the dream of getting the Expats into the World Cup, even with a surprisingly talented generation of players (but little squad depth), he can claim to have transformed the Euran dominion’s fortunes for the better and claimed some memorable shock victories with the side. It nearly all came apart during World Cup 85 qualifying when the Expats went on a horrific run of form and Oslograd, plagued also by off the pitch controversies, came close to getting the sack. He was saved by a remarkable return to form during World Cup 86 qualifying and recently has had the Expats securing the best results of their history, raising his profile on the international radar once more.

The blow dealt to Euran footballing pride by failing to qualify for World Cup 87 has been severe and has created something of an inquisition in the national game as to the causes. As part of this the EFA needed a replacement for Lee Sharp following his resignation. Although the FA approached several top tier candidates, it was felt that a truly radical departure from the normal practices of the EFA and its teams was required, leading to this shock wildcard appointment. Oslograd’s appointment has already proven hugely controversial, and it is likely his tenure will be no different. Not much of that will matter if he gets the results the EFA desire, and although patience will be on offer for the overhaul that is required, failure to meet expectations could result in Oslograd’s other contradictions becoming his downfall. He is under immense pressure to prove the doubters wrong, but then again, he’s done it in the past and could do it again.

A decent start in some friendlies and at the Cup of Harmony was somewhat soured by defeat in the final to Mriin, a recurring nightmare of a defeat to Darmen long ago that followed Eura steamrolling all prior opposition in the tournament. Nevertheless, Eura's mostly faultless performance - and a tournament unusually free of antics for an initially sober minded Oslograd - relieved pressure on the new coach. Unfortunately, a promising start to a home Copa Rushmori that followed was brought to a saddening end by penalty heartbreak in the quarterfinal; Eura recovered to gain good form in World Cup 88 qualifying, but stuttered toward the end, then crashed out in the group stages (though at least this time they qualified) and flattered to deceive at the most recent Copa.

Oslograd continues to revamp the squad and attempt the much more difficult task of overcoming the hang ups of the past. At that last Copa, he suddenly pushed Eura more firmly in the direction of his own orthodoxy than he has in the past and is now going even further. The team has adopted a combative, cynical and defensive (but with ruthless counterattacking) 5-3-2. But results have yet to come; Eura marginally improved at the last World Cup but suffered another gloomy group stage exit, another dampener on the era of optimism Oslograd promises will eventually dawn.

Assistant Manager: Rhea Fianchetto (46, The Askari Union)

Oslograd’s wife and long term assistant manager from his days in charge of The Askari Union, Fianchetto is little known the public eye but has become a respected coach in her own right among those in the know. Many speculate that she may provide sense to the chaos of what has been dubbed “Skorjiball”; when Oslograd has been in a pit, Fianchetto has been there to bail him out, time and time again.
