Language of the Faeries

(OOC: Note that my intention is Subject-Object-Verb word order, but having not been trained in that word order, I may get this wrong sometimes. If you see such a problem somewhere, or any other mistakes made in the following posts, kindly TG me to let me know.)

Consonants

Consonants are formed by obstructing and/or shaping the flow of air from the lungs using your throat, tongue, teeth, and lips. As a first approximation, consonants vary in these dimensions:

Place of articulation, where the obstruction or shaping occurs:
  • labial: using the lips (w), or a combination of lips and teeth (f)
  • dental: using tongue with the teeth (th)
  • alveolar: keeping the tongue behind the teeth (s, t)
  • palato-alveolar: keeping the tongue further back from the teeth (sh, r)
  • palatal: touching back of your tongue to the top of the palate (Russian ch)
  • velar: back of the mouth (k, ng)
  • uvular: way back in the mouth (Arabic q, French r)
  • glottal: in the throat (h, glottal stop).
Degree of closure, which proceeds in the following steps:
  • stops (stopping the airflow entirely: p t k)
  • fricatives (impeding it enough to cause audible friction: f s sh kh)
  • approximants (barely impeding it: r l w y).
  • affricate (a stop plus a fricative, which must occur at the same place of articulation: t + sh = ch, d + zh = j.
Voicing, whether the vocal cords are vibrating or not. That's the difference between f and v, t and d, k and g, sh and zh.
Nasalization, whether air travels through the nose as well as the mouth. For instance, m, n, and ng are stops like b, d, g, but only the oral airflow is stopped.
Aspiration, whether stops are released lightly, or with a noticeable puff of air.
Palatalization, whether the tongue is raised toward the top of the mouth while pronouncing the consonant.

1 This represents a "tsk" sound - like a very quick, short, shallow 't'. It is written in pronunciation guides as "t!".
2 These are explained below, in the Vowels section.
3 Þ/þ make a hard "th" sound, as in 'think' or 'thorn'. There is no soft "th" sound like 'the' or 'that' in the language.
4 S/ſ makes a hard "s" sound, as in 'soft' or 'sound'. There is no soft "s" sound like 'rose' or 'blows' in the language.
5 ʂ/ʃ makes a "sh" sound, as in 'shoot' or 'shave'.
6 ʑ/ʒ makes a "zh" sound, as heard in 'vision' or 'treasure'.
7 Ʋ/ʋ makes a "vw" sound. There is no equivalent sound in English, but it is similar to the Irish sound in 'an bhuil'. This is generally phoenetically written as "un vwil". I can't find the IPA transliteration of the sound.
8 J/j makes a "y" sound, as found in 'young' or 'you'.
9 Ŋ/ŋ makes an "ng" sound, as at the end of 'thing' or 'slang'.

Vowels

The most important aspects of vowels are how open the mouth is (height), and where the sound is produced within the mouth (frontness).

Height: The usual scale is high [i, u], middle [e, o], and low [a]. There may be two middle steps, usually called closed [ay, oh] and open [eh, aw].
Frontness: How close the tongue is to the front of the mouth. Vowels can be classified into front (i, e), central (a), or back (o, u).
Roundedness: Whether the lips are rounded (u, o) or not (i, e).
Length: Vowels may contrast by length.
Nasalization: Like consonants, vowels can be nasalized.

Vowels include: a (as in 'father'), œ (as in 'feet'), e (as in 'fret'), i (as in 'flit'), ö (as in 'float'), ü (as in 'flute').

The language also includes the sounds õ and ũ, which are simply a puff of air with the sound of the indicated vowel carried with it (like a voiced blow).

Phonological constraints

Typically, words are constrained to the shapes that follow [õ|ũ|ǀ](C)V[C|V(C)]

A palato-alveolar stop cannot follow an aspirated fricative (ex. 'sh' cannot precede 'k'). No more than two vowels or consonants in a row.

Special characters

Many of the characters in the Fae alphabet are not found in the Latin alphabet, and as such need to be generated with a compose key or entered using Unicode or Alt-code entries. HTML code is the same as the Alt-code, and is entered as &#[Alt-code];. Check your OS's documentation for instructions on key entry with Unicode or Alt-codes, or setting and using a Compose Key if you so choose.

Numbers

Faeries use a quaternary (base4) counting system (based on their wings). As such, they do not have 1s, 10s, 100s, etc. Instead, it's 1s, 4s, 16s, etc.

Adjectives

Colours
For light colours, add the prefix jœ-. For very light colours, use jœa-. For dark and darker colours, use öj- and öja-, respectively. For lightly or heavily saturated colours, use the suffixes -zö and -zöa. For example, dark blue would be öjösœ, while a lightly saturated very light red would be jœalüdzö. To make an adverb of an adjective, append -zœ.

Verbs

Verbs are often attached to the object the verb modifies, separated by an apostrophe. Ex, "I am" would become "I'am" (or, using the lexicon, "Œfen'ǀi"). Verbs have several tenses: Distant Past, Near Past, Present (walks), Present Participle (walking), Near Future, Distant Future. When conjugating a verb, if the conjugation's syllable begins with the same letter as the verb's last syllable (only if a (CV) construct), simply change the vowel. If the verb is only one syllable, append the conjugation as normal. 'Böna' would conjugate to 'bönü', while 'na' would conjugate to 'nanü'. A verb may also be used as an infinitive, with no root, or object attachment.

To show the various properties of a verb, note the list of suffixes below, and the table that follows:

  • Distant Past: -nö
  • Near Past: -nü
  • Present: -bö
  • Present Participle: -bü
  • Near Future: -lü
  • Distant Future: -lö
  • Possessive: -ſö
  • Plural: -ſœn
  • Adverb: -zœ

I've been working on a similar guide to Quelesian language, including grammatical rules and so on. I figured out why there are so many lines above the tables. After each row of the table you insert a line break, but the forum, for some reason, inserts that line break above the table instead of inside the table. Here are your tables without the extra line breaks.

1 "Genderless", used when the entity has no gender, when the gender is not known, or when referencing a group comprised of different genders.
2 "Sapient", an intelligent life-form.
3 "Natural" non-life. Used to address rocks, planets, and the like.
4 "We inclusive", 'us, but not you'.
5 "We exclusive", 'us, you included'.

I hate to be nitpicky, but that's the nature of linguists and conlangers- you made a slight mistake in terminology for clusivity in your personal pronouns- the first person plural inclusive means "us, you included," not "us, but not you." Just thought you should know.

@Quelesh: Yeah, I found that out a while back, but I guess I forgot to make the changes here. I'm on a Fujitsu U810 (google it; it's a tiny subnetbook :-), so it'd be too painful to fix it atm, but thanks for the reminder. I also need to add the Verbs once my PC is up and running...

@Korintar: You are, of course, correct. I've been using the FPP pronouns in the proper way in transliterations, but wrote the footnote wrong in the post (which was written solely for the forum post). That error I think I can fix, even on this diminutive device :-)

Tables fixed, and lexicon almost completed... Still have to post the verbs, and there are hundreds of them (356 of them, to be exact), plus suffixes and rules, and I don't have the patience to get into all that right now. Adjectives and the other missing word types are available for your perusal, though.

Just remember, this information is all OOC! No non-Fae citizens are actually taught this language, so don't use this page to have your characters automagically know what the Faeries are saying in RPs. I might accept some Universal Translator to pick up on the language in some PMT/FT setting, but only after hundreds or thousands of words have already been spoken - and even then I wouldn't expect it to be perfect!

890 words now, plus numbers (+∞) and pronouns (+49). Verbs are finally posted, and the other word lists have been updated with some new words.

Color me impressed. I'm amazed at the amount of work you put into the lexicon and some of the grammar, though I could use more information on syntax and maybe inflection.

Yeah, I was thinking of using one of those "reserved" spaces for basic grammatical rules and such. I don't even have anything like that written offline, though, so it could be a while. I mostly just wing it when I write in the language :p

Verbs are attached to the subject or object using the verb with an apostrophe, and adjectives are connected with dashes. As stated in OP, I go for SOV word order ("He throws the little red ball" becomes "ball[diminutive]-red he'throws" or "bönanil-lük fe'köſbö"). Getting the prepostpositions right is probably the thing I have the most trouble with. I sometimes can't decide where exactly they go in long/complex sentences.

Just a fun little project :) I used to play a little game in F7 where you would translate the entry offered by the previous poster, but last I checked that thread died :( For now, most of the time this language crops up in the General Assembly, where most of my roleplaying takes place. I might use it more in the future, though :)

This is really impressive. I'm working on my own language right now and it seems I have comparatively a long way to go.

There's always more to add. Example, I just learned while doing that multicolour example above that I have no word for "kick". Because this is a highly agglutinative language (most words are compound forms of simpler words), I'll probably just make it 'footstrike' ('hönafin') or something :p

Like I said, I have a lexicon of about 939 explicitly named words, plus numbers, and it's still not really complete. As mentioned in the text, root words are easily altered to other types of words, expanding the usefulness of those 939 words immensely. I don't need to spell out 'big', 'bigger', or 'biggest or the various synonyms and antonyms when I can just modify the root word of 'big'

smallestsmallersmallbigbiggerbiggest
pöþʃinilʒüpöþʃinilpöþʃinpöþpöþʒüpöþaʒü

Of these six words, I only have 'big' and 'small' specified as part of the 939, and I could have gotten by without 'small', considering the aforementioned agglutinativity of the language. Looks like you can get by knowing about 2,000 words in Basic English, and I think I'm more than halfway to that level of usefulness with this language, considering the propensity for compound words.

Did you use any real (or fictional) languages as inspiration, or did you create the vocabulary, grammar, etc., from scratch? I was pretty lazy with mine, basically ripping off Klingon and Japanese.

Wouldn't that be OSV?

I thought the ball was the subject in that sentence... If you're right, fe'köſbö bönanil-lük :p As the OP says "Note that my intention is Subject-Object-Verb word order, but having not been trained in that word order [and indeed having some difficulty discerning which is the 'object' and which is the 'subject'], I may get this wrong sometimes."

Anyway, not based on any other language, real or fictional. I started with some commonly used nouns and verbs and colours and numbers and built up from there. Like I said, it's very agglutinative, and many - if not most - of the words are compound words. There are a few places where I built on existing words ("ka" means 'what' in my language, and is an interrogative in Japanese; "für" means 'hair'; "gran" [like 'grain'] means 'bread'), but they're relatively rare, and mostly a result of long nights of lexicon-building when my brain started to fry :p

Of course, there's also the occasional pun in the words. The Fae word for "come" (as in 'come here') is "mön" (long 'o') ;-)

Yeah, "He" was the subject. The subject is the do-er of the verb, and the object is the thing the verb is being done to.
If you wanted to use the original sentence you wrote, and make "ball" the subject, it would have to be in passive voice, which would be "The little red ball is thrown by him."

By the way, would you mind if I kind of use your posts here as a form for my own language? (Like, use the format you wrote it in.)

Thanks for the language lesson :)

And use whatever you like, but I also recommend looking at the Language Construction Kit here, and googling around for a list of the most commonly used words as a starting point to build a lexicon. Here is the working document for my language (html) and here is the stylesheet (css) I use.

Ohs, thanks. :P I actually have already started building the language (have been for about two years now), I was just asking if I could use like the lesson format you had used at the top of this thread, just as a way to display it.
I'll take a peak at that stuff too, though.

For what it's worth, I've been trying to make my own conlang for a while. I've made the beginnings of the grammar, but I have yet make a lexicon or codify the grammar in a coherent format. All I can explain easily is that it's somewhat agglutinative and reminds me of Finnish.
