You can upload an image as large as 5MB, but it has to shrink down to 150KB or less after we compress it.

New change: SVG flags now display with a ripple effect on nation home pages (main image only).

Ahh, that explains a lot.

Can this be an option? I'm not a fan of having it on by default.

I will be the thrice. I do not like the ripple; please make it not default.

There will probably be a setting, but it does not yet exist.

Thanks for the report. SVG images with no or very small defined widths/heights should display with appropriate minimum size again.

Vector flags look blurry and pixelated on mobile. I'm curious to understand whether this is an intended feature or a bug, and whether the way vector flags show on mobile is something that will be changed in future.

Agree, I don't really like the ripple effect. Any chance we can go back to the clean crisp svg look we had previously?

Agreed with what others have said - the ripple effect really doesn’t look good on most flags.

I do not like it [the ripple effect] at all. Sorry, but I am going back to using a PNG flag until I am able to use an SVG flag without the ripple effect.

I never liked the ripple effect because, well, Wikipedia does not use it when displaying flags.

This now exists. The current state of play, as per the Create a National Flag page's "Technical Details...", is:

SVG flags, including the built-in flags, allow you to toggle a ripple effect on or off at any time via your Settings. This only affects the look of the main flag displayed on your nation home page.

For custom flags in other formats (PNG, JPEG, GIF), you must choose whether to apply a ripple effect when you upload them. This affects all versions of the flag, and can only be changed later by re-uploading the image.

You actually did it, the absolute madlads and madlasses.

Thank you very much.

Edit: Just noticed that the svg ripple doesn't carry over to forum-side.

The default status of that should be off, like for the "No Cards", "No Zombies", "Require confirmation before passing legislation, "Vacation mode" and "Show more stats" options. Right now, a lot of nations' flags became rippled without the players doing anything, and I don't think all of them like this.

The default status does appear to be off. At least, mine is set to off even though I haven't explicitly done so, though it should be noted that I haven't changed my flag since this thing started.

I think it only happened to the default (Australian Aboriginal) flag.

Considering how Wikipedia displays flags, I would prefer the rippling to be off by default.

I think that the new way of turning rippling on or off should also eventually be applied to raster flags, as in the user uploads a plain version of their flag, and then turn the rippling on or off via the settings.

When the rippling is off by default, it will be really easy to grandfather existing flags with rippling already baked in.
