Issue 902 "Killer App" option 3:

"Career advisors ask sociopathic orphan girls if they have considered becoming professional assassins."

Image

The Yellow ones are only semi-serious complaints, but I find it weird that legalizing assassination to cause crime and the black market to go up, when it legalizes it and therefore making it neither a crime nor the market black. A more serious oddity is the lifespan bit. Legalizing assassination should not move that one up, tbh.

Not my own nation, but something I noticed someone posting about: apparently, the "rampant corporate plagiarism" notability (given for abolishing copyright law) is shown even on socialist nations, that shouldn't have corporations. (Or should this go in Technical? How much control do issue editors have over the notabilities?)

1193 Relocating the Living Room

Postby Fel Dramalis » Tue Oct 19, 2021 5:05 pm

Issue #1193 asks that we decide how we're going to attempt to annex Ausonian territory, if we choose to do so at all. Fel Dramalis exists to see how high the Defense Forces stat can go, so of course I chose option 1, in which "General Snape" told me to send in the tanks and conquer the place. My Defense Stat... shrank, dropping from 88,103.75 to 88,052.13. I'm confuzzled.

Edit: I'd forgotten about this issue's strange results until I answered it the same way with another puppet of mine, Fel Tirynthas. Similar results, Defense shrinking marginally when the option suggests otherwise. Fel Tirynthas and Fel Dramalis are similarly-constructed Defense min-maxers, so it's not a surprise that something affecting one of them would affect the other the same way, but I bring it up in case someone needs more data.

You might want to post that in Technical. Issues Editors can't change those.

110.2 dissolved my government and yet increased taxes by 7.2%. How does that even make sense? How is there even a marginal increase in taxes? If anything, they should be slashed. Literally makes zero sense.

Edit: I got this message before accepting the issue and taxes still went up higher than they ever have before in the entire history of this nation. Does not make any sense whatsoever

Edit 2: another one. Sigh. 759.3, again an option that literally requests a reduction in government, actually increased taxes. I can maybe see how this one works though, because it mentions removing tax breaks. Still, it is asking to remove government oversight from the wedding industry. Ergo, taxes need to drop.

Edit 3: here we go again. 37.3, again an issue answer which specifically requests less regulation, managed to increase taxes. There must be a bug in the code for effective tax rate or something, because this is absolutely ridiculous.

What in the world is going on with NS stats lately and why aren't they doing what the issue answers request?

If an issue answer alludes to fewer regulations and less governance, then taxes need to proportionally decrease.

No. 286, A Whale of a Problem

Chose option 2, answered by Happiness-, 11/2/2021 Central Time

Abolishes animal protections, result text reads "Seafood restaurants assure customers 'If it lives in the sea, it's on our menu."

There was no change to trout fishing industry in stat effects. I may have already answered this issue before & abolished animal protections, but I'd think the effects would just keep stacking. I'd assume ending sea life protections & text reading about seafood, the trout industry would change. The FAQ says no stat changes means I'm continuing my course, but I don't know why it'd have 20 other stat changes as well then.

Issue 893, "Bread is the Stuff of Strife".
I select that ‘complimentary’ add-ons are a waste (option 1), thinking that this will put people off going to restaurants.
My logic is that fewer people in restaurants means more people want Pizza Delivery.
However, my Pizza Delivery drops 1.5% (I've a high score, around 19,000)

I chose option 2 on Issue #1478 Two Sides Of A Coin, which is about putting unissued historic coins into museums. For some reason, food quality went up more than tourism?

Also it appears that issue #1478 is the newest issue here

You may be right (counter-intuitively, banning knives and forks hammered my pizza delivery - viewtopic.php?p=38649484#p38649484)

But on the flip side, I'm sure I've come across issues where choosing the option to boost burger sales hammers pizza too.

For the issue Pretty Pass, I chose to open my arms manufacturing market in exchange for open visas. as a result, my arms manufacturing stats went down.
Freedom? Freedom is an illusion. You all, every one of you, serve and obey your masters every single day. Children obey their parents to avoid being punished. It's been a while.

Anyway, I chose option 3 for Issue No. 232 "Get Teens Out of MyFace," but it increased my Social Conservatism and Authoritarianism, which seems at least a little odd considering: "remove all restrictions on what adults can view and increase restrictions on minors. But at the same time, lower the age of majority by a lot." I don't necessarily disagree — I can see a roundabout explanation for why the state had to become more authoritarian and where the conservatism rose — but it was enough to at least give me pause.

Hi I would like to report a little problem with the issue Issue No. 1056
The first option says:
A rigidly-enforced Working Time Directive should cap anyone from working more than 74 hours 22 minutes per week, with no more than 11.75 hours per shift,” definitively states analyst @@RANDOMFIRSTNAME@@ Bannon, presenting you with a stack of hand-written calculations. “This will benefit safety, health, and quality of life, while also creating more jobs within the economy"
When I chose the option, the employment level dropped

Issue #853 deals with cell phones in theaters. I chose the option to allow them and invest in cell infrastructure.

Logically this would mean an increase in the construction of cell towers, satellites, components used in cell phones, vehicles and equipment used by telecommunications companies, etc. However, there was a decrease in Mining, Employment, and Manufacturing.

These were minor decreases but it is confusing. Mining would be necessary for the metals to construct all items noted above. Manufacturing would increase to generate the goods as there is no indication on the issue of importing from other nations rather than producing. Employment should then increase accordingly, as someone has to do the mining and manufacturing, plus maintenance and other work related to infrastructure.

Is there reasoning behind the decrease in these areas?

Two things. First off, favoring abortion rights caused a drop in civil rights, which is unnatural. Secondly, why does rationing water cause a drop in civil rights? I think both of those issues are providing bad results.

The Free Joy State wrote:Awhile back, the team (aware of the deep and personal feelings around the sensitive issue of abortion) took the -- perhaps controversial decision -- to (generally speaking, allowing for individual stats) programme a civil rights rise for both banning and allowing abortion.

Due to the strength of emotion it raises, we felt it inappropriate to come down on either side of this debate.
While this quote talks about stat rises and not drops, it's clear that the editors have decided to code abortion stats to change civil rights independently of what side you are on. For instance (using made up analogy stats), maybe "rights of children" make up a majority share of your civil rights, and by favoring abortion rights, your "rights of women"-increase wasn't enough to outweigh the drop in "rights of children".

Steelfeather Rapture 1 wrote:Secondly, why does rationing water cause a drop in civil rights?
Because you're forcing people to ration water? More regulation of personal lives -> less civil rights.

Issue 628, option 3:
“No!” cries former martial arts prodigy and current forest ranger Prudence Poindexter, while bribing you with a picnic basket that was allegedly taken from a bear. “We just need a bit more money. Not just for fire suppression, but for preventative measures, like creating defensible spaces around homes, thinning out logs and small trees, prescribed fire, and arresting potential arsonists. Fires will be smaller and more manageable and everyone will be happy.”
Choosing this option caused a decrease in "Law Enforcement" for some reason.

Note: I initially posted this in Gameplay, but I got the feeling this falls under the banner of 'Unusual Issue Effects' as listed in the opening post. Apologies if I'm wrong about this, don't frequent this part of the NS forums very often.

Greetings. So, my alternate nation Valdez Islands, the nation on which I do my issues answering these days, was, as of writing this, just reclassified from "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise" to "Left-Wing Utopia" after I had received and answered what I believe to have been issue 253. I selected the third option, I get the notification that the government reclassification occurred, but beyond that, there are no results. No listed stat or policy changes and the only headline is a single one about the biggest cucumber. I guess my question is, what did I just do, and how did it reclassify government if no stat or policy changes were listed?

The results page doesn't list what it judges to be "very small" changes, even though such a small change could still just happen to push you over the threshold.

So thanks to this, I received the International Incident chain for what, according to my notes, is the third time.

On #392, a very simple issue with only two options (one aggressive, one peaceful), I chose the more aggressive option. The result was a decrease in Defense Forces and an increase in Pacifism. The changes were very small, so they were probably secondary effects, but it's still weird to be getting an increase in Pacifism from attacking people. My notes also show that the last two times I answered the chain on this nation (I always chose the same path, since it fits this nation's theme), I did get an increase in Defense Forces.

There were no changes to the stats made, without checking your nation specifically, the most likely thing that happened was an effect further along the simulation. Which happens sometimes.
