International Baseball Slam 15 [rosters/RPs/results]

Postby Hannasea » Wed Oct 27, 2021 3:56 am

Welcome to the 15th International Baseball Slam. The IBS is a minor baseball tournament that takes place in between editions of the World Baseball Classic, and in modern times is frequently contested by players new to international baseball alongside age-group teams from more established nations.

If you’re completely new to baseball, wikipedia has a helpful article; here’s a glossary of common terms from PBS. Those new to the IBS might want to look at previous tournaments for a sense of how to play. New players are expected to read the guide to sports roleplaying. This opening post contains important information; even experienced baseball roleplayers should make sure to read it in its entirety.

Rosters

Even if you don’t plan on RPing much, it is a basic courtesy to your opponents to try to post a roster. A roster should ideally contain some minimum information:
  • The 9 batters in your team (eight position players and either pitcher or designated hitter).
  • Some pitchers (because pitchers’ arms tire out, there tends to be a rotation of 3 – 5 starting pitchers, plus a few relief pitchers to enter the game as substitutes).
  • Your RP permissions.
Your RP permissions should look something like this:
If my opponents RP first, they may…
Choose my lineup Y/N
Choose my pitcher Y/N
Choose my runscorers Y/N
Choose other statistics Y/N
Use DH Y/N*
RP injuries to my players Y/N
RP ejections to my players Y/N
Godmode events Y/N

Godmoding refers to unusual events outside the expectations of a normal game of baseball. A player hitting a grand slam isn’t a godmode, but a player hitting a home run ball that bounces off a passing pigeon into the centerfielder’s glove would be.

Please make sure to read your opponents’ permissions before RPing; any disputes over such permissions will be determined at the host’s discretion.

You may include other information in your rosters, which can be as minimal or detailed as you like, but try to make sure to include things that other people might find helpful. These could include:
  • Information about your players: who’s more likely to hit a home run, steal a base, or make a great play in the field?
  • Kits and colors.
  • Handedness, which is very important in baseball.
  • Coaches and managers.
  • Team history.
  • Information about your fans.
Note that because all games take place in Hannasea, you do not need to information about stadiums.

* The designated hitter is a player who doesn’t field, and who bats in place of the pitcher. For the purposes of this tournament, the designated hitter preferences of the team listed as the ‘home’ team for each game will be used; the default assumption is that the designated hitter is used unless you specifically state otherwise in your roster preferences.

Host nation

All the games for this edition of the IBS are taking place in the Hannasean Federation, commonly referred to as either Hannasea or the Guild Federation. Hannasea is a medium-sized nation located in the northeast of the main Esportivan continent. It is an alpine nation with a temperate climate; the IBS is taking place in spring, prior to the start of the baseball season. As such temperatures are cool and mild, and there will be chances of occasional rain. Hannasea is a peaceful nation that has built its prosperity on a philosophy of free trade with all. Further information can be found in the CE info-pack.

Roleplaying rules

Each player can set their own permissions, but the following rules apply to everybody:
  • No major violence. If you and your opponent want to RP a fight between your players, that’s fine, but no major crowd hooliganism, and no military invasions or terrorist attacks.
  • No destruction of host infrastructure. Your fans can throw beer cups on the field and your mercurial pitcher can trash her hotel room; your fans cannot burn down the stadium nor riot in the city center.
  • No pandemic storylines. Hannasea has strict biosecurity protocols and the COVID-19 coronavirus does not exist in our canon. Please do not RP infecting the host or other countries.
  • This is a game, in which results are determined using a weighted random number generator. Being annoyed at losing a game is fine, but persistent negative whining about results or entitled behavior make this a negative, unwelcome environment for everyone.
  • All questions and comments should be put in the OOC thread.

Schedule

On each day, the first listed team is considered the ‘home’ team. This means results when posted should be read in reverse, with the first listed team batting second e.g. ‘Team A 4–3 Team B’ means Team A batted second and scored 4 runs, Team B batted first and scored 3 runs.

1 Nov MD1: 2v5, 3v4, 1 Bye
3 Nov MD2: 5v3, 1v2, 4 Bye
5 Nov MD3: 3v1, 4v5, 2 Bye
7 Nov MD4: 1v4, 2v3, 5 Bye
9 Nov MD5: 4v2, 5v1, 3 Bye

On each day, the first game will take place at the first listed ballpark, the second at the second. In this way, each team will have one ‘home’ and one ‘away’ at each.

Ballpark guide

(Because the scorinator does not allow park factors, details about particular parks favoring hitters or pitchers are purely IC flavor and will not necessarily be reflected in results.)

Questionable Ballpark: Home of the New Blopping Mountaineers, but the first part of the name is misleading, the ballpark is well outside the city limits. The second part is accurate and this is an extreme hitters' park because of the altitude. Fences are pulled back to compensate but that adds doubles and triples.

Corsair Park: The only HBL stadium located inside New Blopping city itself. The New Blopping Corsairs play here. Corsair Park is regarded as a pitchers’ park because of its very deep power alleys, though these add doubles and triples to balls pulled into the corner. The surface is grass.

The Orange Bowl: In the coastal city of Kent. Home of the Kent Oranges. Built on the cliffs, meaning the ground has strong crosswinds that make it extremely hard for leftie hitters to find the stands. The walls are pulled in to compensate and there's a deep left field.

CodeTek Park: An orthodox outdoor grass stadium with a shorter right field, by far the most unusual feature of the home of the Pearl City Purple Sox – the leading Hannasean domestic team – is that a tree is located in the grass just beyond the left-center fence. While pruned back during the regular season, in spring its bowers hang over, meaning a ball in play can get stuck here, in which it is automatically ruled a ground-rule double.

HB&B Stadium: In the town of West Chestnut, just outside Butterfly City. Home of the West Chestnut Dragons. Newly refurbished inside a dome with astroturf. Hitters' park, but short outfield walls mean not many triples.

Brown Field: Sponsored by brewing giant Brown, and located on the Incomprehensible Peninsula. Home of the Upper Niedewe Reds, with a retractable roof. Short corner poles but a deep centerfield make this a fairly balanced park. The cool sea air depresses home runs but the artificial playing surface can make line drives bounce at difficult angles for infielders.

Principality Ballpark: In the historic city of Old Blopping, home of the Old Blopping Warlocks. Old fashioned traditional ballpark. Pitchers' park with a slight favor to righties because of a shorter left porch.

The Lightning Dome: In Pintook, on the shores of the massive Lake Took. Home of the Pintook Saracens. Newly rebuilt dome with astroturf. Extreme pitchers' park because of the low altitude and deep outfield.

MD1 is provisionally scheduled to begin 1 November with a cutoff at 1100 UTC.

San Fukuoka Jets Roster for IBS XV

(I will be missing for all of October 30th due to a ISSMA Semi-State event in Indianapolis) How convenient you made the bye for my team on that exact day. Thanks.

The CPB uses a model that is different from the AL, where the pitchers bat and there is also a DH. Why is this? This is because the Center Field position does not exist in the CPB, and it hasn’t since 1995. However, for the IBS, the DH will play the role of CF. In Caleon, the year is currently 2034.

Acronym: SFJ
Uniform colors: Black and orange with a cyan accent

Coaching Staff
Similar to that of the Denver Broncos of the NFL, the Jets have a history of choosing their retired legends as coaches/managers of the ball club. One of these is former 2004 CPB MVP and CPB Hall of Famer Jessica Nakken. Nakken has been the manager of the ball club since 2024. Nakken is 52 years old, born on June 13, 1982, being one of the youngest managers in the CPB. As such, she is a huge fan of analytics and will always pursuit statistical anomalies in the opponent to try to expose their weaknesses.

She is also an excitedly aggressive coach, especially on her twin star daughters, who also share the same amount of tenacity as her. Despite this, she treats everyone with equal respect and helps them focus on their strengths. This leads to a notoriously wild locker room, which is done to get all the jitters out before the players actually play the games in an effort to make them calm, cool, and collected. Cameramen trying to record pre and postgame celebrations are often driven out by the hyped up team.

President of Baseball Operations: Michael Hojnacki, 44 year old male, previously played with the Jets from 2010-2023. Hired in 2032.
Manager: Jessica Nakken, 52 year old female, 2004 and 2006 CPB MVP with the Jets. Hired in 2024.
Head Coach: Marshall Ostroski, 62 year old male, head coach since 2015.
Pitching Coach: Delaney Moseley, 33 year old female. Former pitcher with the Amsterdam Lions, hired in 2032.
Hitting Coach: Gavin Lux, 36 year old male. Former second baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hired in 2034.*
1st Base Coach: Owen Lanschweerdt, 42 year old male. Former first baseman for the Brussels Athletics, hired in 2030.
3rd Base Coach: Ashley Foster, 44 year old female. Former 3rd baseman and pinch runner for the Paris Blue Jays. Hired in 2031.

The Jets starting rotation includes:

  1. Jack Tyler (1B), #4, Male, Left-Handed, 2031 Diamond Glove Champion, 5-Time All-Star, 7 yrs. EXP. Expert at stealing bases.
  2. Leah Nakken (LF), #9, Female, Left-Handed, 2034 Küstenliga Gold Slugger Nominee, 3-Time All-Star, 3 yrs. EXP, Daughter of 2004 CPB MVP, Jessica Nakken. Extreme power hitter, known for her hits that break through opposing winds. Has a tendency to strike out often.
  3. Brandon Williams (C), #94, Male, Ambidextrous, 1 yr. EXP. Will catch literally anything thrown at him, and hasn’t let a wild pitch get behind him all season. Mediocre batter at best.
  4. Hailey Blanchard (SS), #23, Female, Right-Handed, 2029 Küstenliga Diamond Glove Champion w/Portpolis Challengers, 2-Time All-Star, 5 yrs. EXP, Daughter of former Michelin Paris Blue Jays Manager Neil Blanchard. Wonderful shortstop, and has come consistently close to winning the Diamond Glove every year since she was drafted in 2028. Her first career hit was a grand slam, the only Jet to have their first hit be a Grand Slam. However, she is inconsistent at the batting plate.
  5. An Nakken (RF), #32, Female, Right-Handed, 2033 Küstenliga Diamond Glove Champion, 2-Time All-Star, 4 yrs. EXP, twin sister of Leah Nakken. Might be one of the fastest women in Caleonian history, set multiple track and field records in college. Her hits are often fast ground balls.
  6. Cameron Varga (2B), #39, Male, Right-Handed, 3-Time All-Star, 8 yrs. EXP. Another power hitter, not as extreme as Nakken; often needs a pinch runner if he gets a single.
  7. Sophia Pizarek (3B), #48, Female, Right-Handed, Rookie, 2034 All-Star Nominee, 2034 Küstenliga Rookie of the Year. Hot prospect from the University of Hamburg. Decent batter, great at getting people out in between 3rd base and home plate.
  8. Austin Kuntz (DH/CF), #53, Male, Left-Handed, 4 yrs. EXP. Solid power hitter, played SS and Centre Midfielder in college, but shifted to DH once he got drafted in 2029. Rarely strikes out.
  9. Erin Toledo (RHP), #7, Female, 5-Time All-Star, 2029 CIC MVP w/Suzuka Slicers, 11 yrs. EXP. If she was in the MLB, she’d be a perennial Cy Young candidate year after year. Too bad her offense rarely helped her in Suzuka…

The CPB’s roster structure results in 5 starting pitchers for the Jets, each having one closer as a partner for the 8th and 9th innings. Also, all CPB pitchers pitch overhand.

  1. Erin Toledo (RHP), #7, Female, 11 yrs. EXP.
    1. Catelyn Luther (RHP), #33, Female, 5 yrs. EXP.
  2. Caleb Johnson (LHP), #25, Male, Trade Deadline Acquisition from the Copenhagen Seahawks, where his father is Manager, 3 yrs. EXP.
    1. Johnathan Palmer (RHP), #17, Male, 7 yrs. EXP
  3. Robert Hixon (RHP), #21, Male, 10 yrs. EXP
    1. Audrey Matthys (RHP), #12, Female, currently engaged to Hixon, will marry in the off-season, 9 yrs. EXP
  4. Nicole Angeles (LHP), #77, Female, Rookie
    1. Emma Brewer (LHP), #00, Female, 4 yrs. EXP
  5. Myles Albano (RHP), #55, Male, 8 yrs. EXP
    1. Spencer Bauer (RHP), #24, Male, 8 yrs. EXP

If my opponent RPs first, they may…
NOT choose my starting lineup as I have yet to come up with rotating backups for my hitters
Choose my pitcher, but they may NOT mix and match the duos
NOT choose my run scorers for the same reason as choosing starting lineup
Choose other stats
Use Designated Hitters, Pinch Hitters, AND Pinch Runners
NOT RP Injuries to my players
NOT RP Ejections to my players
NOT Godmode Events when the Jets are at home, but they CAN when my opponent is the home team.

Schedule
Nov 1: Eagles @ Jets, CodeTek Park- The Toledo-Luther duo will pitch this game. Albano-Bauer are in the bullpen.
Nov 3: Jets @ All-Stars, Orange Bowl- Hixon-Matthys duo will pitch. Johnson-Palmer in the BP.
Nov 5: Lions @ Jets, Orange Bowl (how funny, this is the 2034 CIC matchup in NYC)- Angeles-Brewer will pitch. Toledo-Luther in the BP.
Nov 7: Jets @ Lynx, CodeTek Park- Johnson-Palmer will pitch. Hixon-Matthys in the BP.

*This Gavin Lux is not the real life Gavin Lux, even if they may look identical. He was inspired by a combination of my classmates’ names, not him.

A note about the DH: ICly, Nova Anglicana did not know that DH would be used in all/most games here, so they constructed a roster built around speed, defense, average, and patience. Assume that all players have these attributes and limited power. The coaching staff has decided to try just about everyone at DH, since there is no true DH type on the roster. Therefore, the DH spot will be occupied by a different person each time. When selecting a DH for the Lions, choose either a substitute, or a starter and replace them in the lineup with a substitute. Insofar as it is possible, attempt to select a different DH from previous games.

Starting Lineup w/DH

Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars

The Banijan Joint Service Academy All-Stars are a team composed of the best baseball players at Banija's four military academies- The Kabaka's Military College(Army), the Banijan Royal Naval Academy(Navy), the Royal Air Force Academy(Air Force), and the Shango-Fogoa Coast Guard Academy(Coast Guard). It is put on to honor those who are willing to put themselves on the line to sacrifice for their countries, and to put this on for active-duty soldiers and veterans all over the multiverse. The organizing body for the team is the Banijan Service Academies Association.

Coaching Staff
Theodosia Osano will be the manager for this special edition team. She is 56 years old. She is the hitting coach for the national team, and is the national team's only female coach. Osano is not a military veteran herself, and is the only person on the staff who lacks military connections. She was chosen deliberately for that effect, as to not enhance inter-service rivalry

Like many Banijans under Ousman Kakay's tutelage, she is both aggressive, but also a traditionalist. Disavows openers, not a fan of analytics, although she embraces the DH. Far more likely to ride a starting pitcher for too long rather than pull them too early.

Everybody assumed to be male unless explicitly listed otherwise.

Manager- Theodosia Osano. 56 years old. Hitting coach for the Banijan national team. Female.
Bench Coach- Ijendu Chee. 49 years old. Manager at Army.
Hitting Coach- Chibuike Chydie. 47 years old. Hitting coach at Navy.

1 SS Junkung Joof. #35. 19 years old. Right-handed. Freshman at Army. Speedy, aggressive on the basepaths.

4 DH Boto Mbye. #5. 20 years old. Left-handed. Sophomore at Air Force. Hits for power. Runs the base-paths poorly. He plays the corner outfield positions by trade.
5 1B Hassan Danso. #30. 19 years old. Right-handed switch hitter. Freshman at Army. Generates more power batting left, but hits better for average batting right.
6 3B Ismaela Nyang. #17. 23 years old. Right-handed. Senior at Navy. Hits for power, takes huge swings, but has a poor average.
7 2B Ebrahima Gassama. #4. 22 years old. Right-handed. Senior at Army. He thinks he's as fast and as quick as Marong, although he isn't. They form an excellent defensive pairing in the middle of the infield, but is often over-aggressive on the basepaths.
8 CF Sara Kabbah. #16. 23 years old. Female. Senior at Air Force. Great defensive player, great range and arm, needs to improve hitting. He comes off the bench when there is no DH.

Choose my lineup: No (My lineup is here for all to see, so please use it. Of course, you can do substitutions for pitchers and players as you see fit, throughout the course of the game. But the starting lineup should remain the same)
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes (My pitching schedule is laid out to a T, matchday by matchday, so please follow that. It's not just a straight rotation, as I look to get extra starts for my top two starters. All laid out below, for each individual matchday. Thanks!)
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes (That's fine, but please say what the injury is, and please specify how many games the player will miss. No deaths please).
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes (That's fine, but please say what the injury is, and please specify how many games the player will miss. No deaths please).
Eject my players/coaches: Yes
Godmod other events: Yes (As long as you don't kill anyone, go ahead)
Use DH at home: Yes
Other: When we are pitching, they induce a lot of ground balls. The strike out rates aren't terribly high for Banijan pitchers, but they play solid, fundamental defense, and they have strong arms all over the diamond. However, while Banija's rotation is one of the strongest in the multiverse, the bullpen leaves much to be desired, especially the middle relievers, who are well known to be the team's weakest link. For the knockout stages, we'll have one starter in the 4 man rotation available every game for an inning or two out of the bullpen. That is listed in the rotation. If those guys are brought in, it is for an absolute maximum of 35 pitches, however many outs that takes.

Basian Clergy White Sox

The sport of Baseball in Schima Bas is mainly popular in cities with a large population of immigrants, such as the major cities of Ourelasia and Alquierdi. It also has picked up a following in Amanas, a city with a limited immigrant past. It spread to the country by christian immigrants, and so many churches organize baseball games for competition and leisure. Some still play in “country ball-fields” next to rural churches, but a larger baseball scene has also developed in the cities, with more of the lights and action of other major leagues.

The Basian Clergy, an organization of aligned christian clergymen and women, has always had a great history of baseball. Its first team was organized only 6 months after the organization was founded. Nowadays, the Basian Clergy still provides a great entertainment product for its fans, which pay a small fee that goes towards the organization’s charitable goals, including the establishment of new hospitals across the country. The Clergy’s uniform and equipment are provided by the players, who pitch into a team bank that can be drawn from.

The group has grown in popularity over the years, especially as it is the only sporting group of any renown that is coed, allowing any member of the organization to join. What used to be an aging team of old immigrant men has evolved into a successful baseball organization that has helped keep clergy in shape, bring in fundraising money, and allow for some great team-bonding competition among the church folk.

The majority of players come from the church communities of Ourelasia, many of whom study at the Turell Seminary in the city. Students often play for only two seasons, as they often take missionary leaves during their last four semesters.

San Fukuoka Jets Fanbase Heading to IBS XV

The Jets fanbase is… an interesting case study to be sure. Being one of the oldest fan bases in Caleon’s history, they are notoriously rowdy, just like their player counterparts in the locker room. The Jets play in Crypton Future Technologies Field, an indoor park modeled after the Kansai International Airport terminal building, even being designed by the same architect, Renzo Piano.

Opened in 1994, Crypton Future Technologies Field is a state of the art facility built on the coast of Lake Tegel. This airport-style design allows for tailgating INSIDE the stadium, which has created a massive fan movement called the “Jets Mafia” consisting of over 20,000 members who go to every home game of the Jets and are likely to fill out the Orange Bowl and CodeTek Park.

Jets Mafia is, like I said, notorious for being quite insane during games. They are the official fan organization of the SF Jets. It has over 200 chapters across North America, Europe and Oceania. It started as a collection of Jets fans organized via Twitter beginning in 2010; the phrase "Jets Mafia" had by 2017 grown to unofficially represent the broad community surrounding and encompassing the team as a whole, and players who join the Jets often speak of joining the Jets Mafia. Outsiders often treat the Jets' fan base in derogatory terms, especially since the 2010s, in part because of negative press coverage of select fans' wilder antics. In 2020, the Jets filed to trademark the "Jets Mafia" name, and succeeded in acquiring the trademark.

Despite their known boisterous behavior, Jets fans have also been noted for their generosity; after the Jets received help in breaking their 5-year playoff drought in 2024 (their last playoff appearance was in 2019 where they lost in the CIC to the Seahawks in 7 games) on a walk-off Portpolis Challengers victory, Jets fans crowdfunded the charities of Challengers pitcher John Wilkeson and manager Gabriel Rivera with hundreds of thousands of figmas as a gesture of thanks. Also in 2033, following a August 8 upset win over the Copenhagen Seahawks led by pitcher Erin Toledo’s first career perfect game, news emerged that Toledo had elected to take the field after having been given the option to sit out the contest as she had received news of her grandmother's death only the night before. Fans showed support for their team and community by donating nearly ₣700,000 to the Henning Children's Hospital, an organization supported by Toledo throughout her time in San Fukuoka. Following the Jets' defeat of the Cooper Capitals in the 2022 CPB playoffs and an injury to Capitals’ right fielder Trinity Stock late in game 7, Jets fans crowdfunded her favorite charity, Blessings in a Backpack.

this was copy-pasted from the U13s IBS XIII Roster and only the ages (and some minor descriptions) were changed. Please grade accordingly.

"We sent the U11s by mistake IBS 12, every baseball player boycotted IBS 13, you somehow forgot to send the forms for IBS 14-"

"-To be fair, I hadn't started working here by yet-"

"Shut up. I would love to hear why we're sending the kids again for IBS 15. Enlighten me."

"Honestly, I thought that's just what we were doing now. Plus U17s are a normal age to send to this kind of tournament..."

"But instead of sending a real U17s team, you just sent everyone who was on the U13s team?"

"Well Aubrey was pregnant, but yeah, besides that."

"At least tell me you didn't keep B-"

"Nah, Fuchs is still here."

"...this is going to be a long cycle."

What's this, what's this....a youth team? One not named the Jags? Yes, that's right. TB finally felt that our Top 10 team needed some reinforcements if it was to remain up there in the sport and so, the U21 Battin' Cubs have made their way to Hannasea to take part in the International Baseball Slam, a friendly-ish tournament for youth teams and potential WBC debutants. The 12 players who have made the trip here come from as many backgrounds as possible, including the first female and first gender-fluid players in the history of our baseball history, and with much said already on how good these players can be, who knows what they can do in front of the international lense...

"Hey good news!"

"What?"

"We're playing some international tournament"

"What?"

"Well we won the high school championship"

"I remember, I was there"

"So apparently in the entry form for the baseball season the winner gets to go to the "International Baseball Slam""

"What's that?"

"No idea but it's an international baseball tournament!"

"So we get to leave the country?"

"Exactly!"

"Oh my god that's so cool!"

"I know!"

"Where are we going?"

"Hannasea?"

"Whose coming?"

"The whole team!"

"Wow!"

"Yeah!"

Team Summary: The Central Heights High School Undead have been the class of the Chromatik National High School Baseball League since its inception four years ago, leaning on the right arm of pitcher Nalrina Anoyara for all four seasons and never suffering more than two losses in a single season. Nalrina Anoyara is the showstopper of the squad, she of the ever consistent, breaking fastball that can utterly take over a match. She's known for being more of an intense character than her older sister and now WBC Champion Clara Anoyara. Park Kyu-Ri is more of a tricky pitcher who incorporates changeups and sliders to keep batters off-balance, while Andrew Beckett-Carlson is the least notable of the bunch, having command of four different pitches at such a young age but not really mastering in any of them.

In the bullpen, look for Ross Petrova to spell any starters that get in early trouble, while Isaak Kyurev and Mishki Bayoravski are better saved for no more than two inning stints. Wang Xuen is a above-average setup man, while Maria Paulson uses off-speed pitches and a decent fastball to close out games.

When it's time to bat, the Undead rely on Reile Potter to get on base early, while Martin Granderson, one of four Seniors in the starting 9, is in the cleanup spot and the team's big bat. Sabrina Madelsen and Gregorio Vespucci are also reliable hitters, while Yuri Kryiev, Myung Hyun-Shik, and Ishmael Jordan are more of the fielding type. Karlos Theodore is the well-rounder who can both field and bat reliably.

Expect Ashleigh Kruig to be the player used most as a Pinch Hitter, while Li Xiaohu's speed cannot be questioned as the team's best Pinch Runner. Marcus Doyle, Curtis Petrona, and the aforementioned Kruig can all play all three positions in the outfield.

ABANHFLEFT REVOLUTION
Abanhfleft men's national baseball team

If Abanhfleft's best can't even win a damn Baseball Slam, what hope do a bunch of retired players have? None, that's what. And now this bunch of oldies is being called back for another shot. Can't the SBA just let these guys stay retired in peace?

STAFF
Why get an all-new staff for what is most probably a one-off event? Yes, the IBS has a long and quaint history behind it, but the fact remains that it's only been resurrected now. And the old-timers have been told that they're doing this for fun, so why worry about getting more coaches than the Samahang Beisbol ng Abanhfleft can afford?

Frenei Chromatik Baseball League Season 5 Preview - Part 1

Sixteen teams return to play the game in Chromatika, who are now the World Champions. What does it mean that so many of them play abroad in either Quebec, Super-Llamaland, or South Newlandia, though? The Chromatik Sporting Commission has stated that the CBL will be a farm league to the LPB, where every season, fifteen position players and ten pitchers will be selected to attend the LPB draft from the CBL. What will that mean for this league with so many of the better players leaving every season? Reportedly, players will be allowed to remain in Chromatika if they choose to - but will anyone?

Teams are divided into Title Contenders, Playoffs Teams, Almost There, and Participants, and then alphabetized per category. Let us meet the Title Contenders and Playoff Teams.

Title Contenders
CHROMIA COMETS
Players on WBC 52 Roster: CF Nila ASPEN (as PH/OF)
Notable Players: RHP KIM Jung-Wook (Starting Pitcher), RHP Jayce DREW (Starting Pitcher), LHP Sai YOKAMOTO (Starting Pitcher), SS Molina ISHKAYA, CF Nila ASPEN, LHP Harley DREW (Reliever)
Summary: The Comets lost one player off their roster, but it's a doozy - Clara Anoyara. Despite losing their best ace, they still have the services of Kim Jung-Wook, Jayce Hart, and Sai Yokamoto on their pitching staff and the likes of Molina Ishkaya, who hit thirty homers last season and Nila Aspen, the fielder who was on the shortlist for having one of the lowest error percentages last season. They should make it to the playoffs without much trouble, and be one of the favorites to win the title.

FELSWYR FIRE
Players on WBC 52 Roster: RHP Izzie RAMONE (Starting Pitcher), LHP Carson BECKETT (Reliever)
Notable Players: RHP Izzie RAMONE (Starting Pitcher), RHP Zachary PLOTT (Starting Pitcher), LHP Kendrick MOORE (Starting Pitcher), 1B LI Yangjing, C Gary LIGHT, LHP Carson BECKETT (Reliever)
Summary: Gone is Rose Dawson, but the Fire retain Izzie Ramone and Carson Beckett. This pitching staff is one of the best in the CBL, with Ramone being their ace and Plott and Moore being good enough to take wins over anyone. If they falter, Beckett will be there. Li Yangjing is great at getting on base, and Gary Light is one of the better catchers in the league in terms of batting in runs. They've struggled with scoring in the past, but if they can take care of that to an extent, this is a squad that should be in the top four comfortably.

HANAI HEROES
Players on WBC 52 Roster: None
Notable Players: RHP PARK Yae-Ju (Starting Pitcher), LHP Frederick JONES (Starting Pitcher), RHP Eddie MERRICK (Starting Pitcher), RF Isaiah JORE, LF Annie CARR, RHP Candice POUNCEY (Closer)
Summary: Losing three players to the LPB is a major hit, but the defending Champions keep on keeping on. Park Yae-Ju would have been the ace on fifteen other teams, and will take over for Jerome Delapier, while Frederick Jones is the twenty-two year old phenom who was being upstaged by Clara Anoyara as the best young pitcher in the CBL. With Anoyara gone, the stage is set for Jones. The Heroes will be hard-pressed to replace the production of Edith Ponce, but their outfielders - Isaiah Jore, Annie Carr, and even Kana Yrevsok - are potential all-stars ready to make big names for themselves. If they don't, the starting pitching and a bullpen led by Candice Pouncey, a top three closer in the league, is ready to make sure that enough close matches end in victories.

RHONI RHONIN
Players on WBC 52 Roster: 3B Gregory SIMONS (as PH/IF), SS Mason DIRK (as PR), RHP Truman SAVANT (Reliever), LHP OIlie BIER
Notable Players: RHP DO Sung-Jae (Starting Pitcher), LHP Cara LEVEUX (Starting Pitcher), 3B Gregory SIMONS , SS Mason DIRK, CF Dario CROOKSHANKS, RHP Truman SAVANT (Reliever), LHP Ollie BIER (Reliever)
Summary: Only a year removed from winning their first title, the Rhonin return four players that were part of the WBC 52 squad, only losing George Ducat to the New Llama Wizards. The Rhonin are a very productive team at the plate, and with having both Gregory Simons and Mason Dirk the stolen bases expert to go alongside Dario Crookshanks, they will not be shy about scoring runs. Their bullpen is deep and full of many key players; if Do Sung-Jae can keep progressing, Cara Leveux steps up as a secondary reliable pitcher, and the team rallies around the other names that make up their starting rotation, the Rhonin can make it far.

Playoffs Teams
ALNIO REDS
Players on WBC 52 Roster: RHP Beatrice CASTREAUX (Reliever)
Notable Players: RHP Lance JEROME (Starting Pitcher), LHP LEE Ji-Min (Starting Pitcher), RHP Earnest PIKKICHI (Starting Pitcher), SS Andrew GREYMOOR, LF Damon QIERRA, CF Oswald YENG, RHP Beatrice CASTREAUX (Reliever)
Summary: The Reds are a team looking to take the next step, but remain a few pieces short. Lance Jerome throws a pretty changeup, while Lee Ji-Min can be very inconsistent; behind the plate, Andrew Greymoor is an up-and-coming big bat that can take over a game while Damon Qierra is the flashy player that makes all the defensive plays. Beatrice Castreaux can pick up many of the jams that the starting five get up to.

SANAR VIPERS
Players on WBC 52 Roster: None
Notable Players: RHP Roland PARKINSON (Starting Pitcher), RHP Terry KING (Starting Pitcher), 3B Anna MINTER, C KANG Woo-Jin, 1B Lara JARWIN, RHP Ogawa JON (Reliever)
Summary A team whose whole is better than its parts, the Vipers don't really have a big name. Kang Woo-Jin is making waves in her third year as starting catcher, but besides that, this is a team of players who are good at certain things making sure that they get those things done correctly. Every time the Vipers do well, they prove that teamwork is better than a team that has some stars that don't know how to get along.

SHANTARR SCORPIONS
Players on WBC 52 Roster: 1B Redwina MAXX (as PH/IF)
Notable Players: RHP Dunsten MARS (Starting Pitcher), RHP Josephine ARREAUX (Starting Pitcher), SS Damon FERRAR, 1B Redwina MAXX, C Angelina GRANGER, LHP Hona GUGOR (Reliever)
Summary: Shantarr prides itself in being a baseball town, and the Scorpions are their team. Redwina Maxx is just waiting for the day that Mattieu Gammond hangs it all up, having established herself as a primary first baseman in Chromatika already; Damon Ferrar is a flashy defensive shortstop while Angelina Granger provides veteran leadership. Dunsten Mars was the ace of the Myana Merfolk (whatever that means for such a horrible team) and will make an interesting addition to the Scorpions' pitching rotation after the departure of RHP Kingston Dwyer, who called it quits after having his mother be hospitalized full-time. Though they should be expected to make playoffs, they are one or two injuries or mishaps away from missing the postseason.

UMBAR CORSAIRS
Players on WBC 52 Roster: 2B Harold DANTE
Notable Players: LHP LEE Jung-Seo (Starting Pitcher), LHP PARK Mi-Kyung (Starting Pitcher), LHP JANG Dae-Woo (Starting Pitcher), 2B Harold DANTE, 3B Andrei KYRCEV, RF Magnar KASAILA, RHP Nira GEO (Reliever)
Summary: The only position player for the Outliers to play in the Frenei Chromatik Baseball League, Harold Dante is the lifeblood of this team. Assisting him is the only pitching rotation to feature three left handed starters. The Three Southpaws, as they are called, are all of Korean decent and possess much notoriety when it comes to this squad. Andrei Kyrcev is the other bat that can be counted on, while Magnar Kasaila is a top rated prospect from the Chromatik National High School Baseball League that chose to skip the collegiate system altogether. How far can Dante and the Three Southpaws carry this team?

Pearl City, Hannasea

"They what???", splurted manager Rick McDonald, spitting out the drink of water he had just taken from some Hannasean springwater bottle. His hitting coach, Lou Sharp, wondering if McDonald had been just a bit dramatic with his beverage, repeated what he'd just said, "The DH is mandatory in this tournament."

"Mandatory?", exclaimed McDonald, who remained agitated. "In every other single f***ing tournament we've played in, neither the DH nor no DH has ever been mandatory."

"I know," replied Sharp. "Something about local customs and ease of lineup decision making or summat, but in reality, they're the hosts, and whatever they say goes."

"Sure, sure," said McDonald, who seemed to have calmed himself a little at this point. "It's just unprecedented. And none of the brain geniuses at the Sub-Ministry of Sport bothered to retain this information when they signed us up, let alone relay it to us when we were in the process of talent selection? We went into this competition thinking we were going to beat teams with speed and defense, really get the guys without superb offensive talent a chance to show their stuff and get noticed by their orgs or maybe by an LPB scout. And now you're telling me we're going to have to take one of out of the field every night or else use one of the subs, who are somehow more inept on offense than the starters?"

"It's not ideal, I'll admit that," said Sharpe. "But the upside of having guys like we do is that we can shuffle them in and out of the DH spot, maybe ride the hot hand, without worrying about losing too much on the offensive or defensive end."

McDonald shrugged his shoulders. "I suppose they are somewhat interchangeable. So what do you suggest?"

Sharp put a document on his desk. "The way I see it, platoon advantage is the best shot we have at coaxing as much offense as possible from this team. When we take on the Banijan Service Academies team in game one, they'll be throwing a righty. So we need a lefty to DH. Fraser, Blackmon, and Béthencourt are all switch-hitters, so we probably shouldn't DH with them to get as many hand-advantage at-bats as we can. Boucher's a lefty, but Sadler would play first if he DHs, and he's a righty. So I'm thinking we get Avery to DH and Allard to play left, since they're both lefties. That'll give us two-thirds of our lineup with the platoon advantage, which is about as much as we can get. I mean, we could DH Fraser, play Leboeuf at catcher, and swap out Kessler and Parker for Allard and Gélinas, which would give us eight platoon advantage at-bats, but I think that we do give something up on both ends with that kind of swap."

McDonald's brows furrowed. "Hmm, I suppose you're right. Kessler's got a much better arm than anyone else, and Parker is our best center fielder. Leboeuf's a bit of a lightweight, too. So Avery in the DH spot and Allard in left. Avery won't like it; he wanted to play center over Parker, and being taken out of the field entirely's a blow, but he's our best hitter in the outfield. He'll just have to do his part for the team, much as his temper won't take to it."

Sharp grinned. "I'll go get him, but I'm staying out of the office when you tell him. I need to talk to the rest of the guys about our strategy, really get them on board."

Not long after, as Sharp and other players talked in the locker room, a loud shout could be heard from McDonald's office. "You want me to do what???"

South Newlandian roster for the 15th International Baseball Slam

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my lineup: I have a lineup below, but substitutions are fine within reason
Choose my pitcher: I have listed which pitcher your team will face. You can choose relief within reason
Choose my runscorers: Yes, please!
Choose other statistics: Yes!
Use DH Yes.
RP injuries to my players: Please consult me before anything beyond 1 game, but generally, sure.
RP ejections to my players: Not without talking to me first.
Godmode events: Only if it’s funny.

Coaching staff
Manager/Head Coach: Sarang Oli (60ish+4, The Sherpa Empire)
Pitching coach: Jean-Luc Conrad (39)
Hitting coach: Victor Lo (37)
Athletic trainer: Valentin Metcalfe (34)
1st base coach: Maria Klein (39)
3rd base coach: Klaus Bollman (38)

Sarang Oli, an experienced coach from The Sherpa Empire. He coached the Sherpa national team for three Classics about a decade ago, and while he is known to be grumpy at times, he turned this team around, leading them to the final of IBS13 and third place in IBS14. His style is not too unusual for South Newlandian teams, with usually conservative baserunning and not obsessing over pitch counts. Oli is going to work with the same coaching team as last time, and all of them are trying to finally catch their whale – winning an International Baseball Slam.

Starting pitchers [*strongest (not necessarily most likely) pitch]
Despite the limited number of games, the choice was made to nominate five starting pitchers. For one, having been on an IBS Roster is a big thing for the players, and it allows the team to have an emergency starter who won’t have any scheduled games.

(SP1) Garry Gordon (R, 21) (Newport Dolphins) *4-seam fastball (vs. Eshialand U21s)
Image

Gordon is back from the most recent IBS roster, and can be considered the best pitcher on this roster. He used to play for the Chekar Tigers, but the Newport Dolphins selected him 14th overall in the redraft.
(SP2) Wayne Dawson (R, 20) (South Falls Athletics) *4-seam fastball (vs. Super-Llamaland U17s)
Dawson is a young, talented pitcher with a great fastball. He’s been chosen 13th in the redraft by the Athletics, and has thus been separated from his former Tigers teammate Garry Gordon.
(SP3) Mollie Lloyd (L, 21) (Elephant Valley United) *Curveball (vs. United Adaikes Hawks)
Lloyd has been a rookie for United. The 21-year-old southpaw was graded as an D-level prospect, but after joining Elephant Valley with the 32nd pick, she made heads turn with an outstanding curveball.
(SP4) Bethany Riddle (L, 21) (Sophie City Monarchs) *Changeup (vs. ICF Crocodiles)
Riddle was selected as a C-level prospect by the Monarchs with the 29th pick. She’s had a great rookie season with Sophie City, working a great fastball/changeup combination.
(SP5) Rickie McBride (R, 20) (Sun City Flames) *Slider (emergency starter)
McBride, another C-level prospect, was chosen by the Flames with the 26th pick. His rookie season had its ups and downs, but he played some good games for Sun City, and will probably improve in coming years.

Relief pitchers
(Closer) Dhruv Webber (21, L) (Malidridad Mariners) *Changeup
Webber returns from the most recent IBS, where he played extremely well. He has spent a couple of years with the Mariners now, and has moved all the way up to closer quickly. He’s by far the best reliever on the squad. He’s also one of the players with WBC experience.
(Set-up) Jasmine Daniels (20, L) (Sophie City Monarchs) *Sinker
Daniels, who is playing her second season with the Monarchs after being selected 7th overall in the last SNBL draft, is also returning for her second IBS. The southpaw has developed a fantastic sinker.
(Primary1) Marcus Cobb (20, R) (Walstreim Stingrays) *Cutter
Cobb is playing for the Walstreim Stingrays for a couple of years now, he was one of the youngest players when he entered the league. Cobb’s cutter crushes complacent clowns in the batter’s box.
(Primary2) Frank Chavez (21, R) (Malidridad Mariners) *4-seam fastball
Chavez is returning from the most recent IBS. Since then, he went from from the Lexen City Rebels to the Mariners with the 18th pick of the redraft, the only reliever to be selected there in the first round.
(Mop-up1) Raphael Boyer (21, L) (St. Riecarn Saints) *Slider
Boyer is a rookie for the Saints. He was chosen as a D-level prospect with the 34th pick, but he played an extremely good rookie season. It remains to be seen whether that was a one-hit wonder or not.
(Mop-up2) Matt Decker (20, R) (New Llama Wizards) *Curveball
Decker rounds out the pitching staff. The Wizard was chosen with the 48th pick, and while he graded out as an F-level prospect, he is considered a decent piece, and his curveball can do some damage. Still, he’s not supposed to see the field much.

Starters in batting order
(DH) Terry Soto (21, R) (St. Riecarn Saints)
(Speed: Average | Power: Good | Contact: Very Good | Fielding: N/A)
Soto mainly plays Designated Hitter for the St. Riecarn Saints, but his primary position, if he’s on the field, is Right Field. He’s been swinging the bat very well.

(CF) Emil Hurley (20, L) (Peninsulara Kingfishers)
(Speed: Very Good | Power: Average | Contact: Very Good | Fielding: Good)
Hurley had a weird journey to the Kingfishers. He originally started out on the Lexen City Rebels, but was selected with the 4th pick in the redraft by the Rüsselsheim Blue Sox. However, he never played a single game for Rüsselsheim, as they quickly went and traded him to the Kingfishers.

(RF) Gary Promises (21, S) (Newport Owls)
(Speed: Good | Power: Very Good | Contact: Average | Fielding: Good)
Promises is considered one of the best prospects of South Newlandia, and promises to be an elite power hitter. He was the youngest player in league history when he entered the league for the Owls, and after a record-breaking rookie season, he has slowed down a bit. He’s been with the IBS for a while, and keeps performing well.

(1B) Tiffany Grey (20, R) (Sun City Flames)
(Speed: Good | Power: Very Good | Contact: Good | Fielding: Average)
Grey is an elite piece. Graded as an S-ranked prospect, she was chosen second overall by the Flames, and played an excellent rookie season there, hitting a bunch of home runs. She and Gary are the 1-2 punch for the Elephants.

(3B) Alicia Broughton (20, R) (Sophie City Monarchs)
(Speed: Good | Power: Average | Contact: Good | Fielding: Bad)
Broughton usually plays shortstop for the Monarchs, but has moved to third on occasion. Despite this, fielding at third is not something she is used to, but she is a decent hitter.

(LF) Pamela Sullivan (20, L) (St. Riecarn Saints)
(Speed: Average | Power: Bad | Contact: Average | Fielding: Good)
Sullivan was graded as a C-level prospect and was chosen 23rd overall by the Saints. She has proven to be a below-average hitter in her rookie season, but has been really good in the field.

(2B) Dave Holmes (21, R) (Walstreim Stingrays)
(Speed: Average | Power: Average | Contact: Good | Fielding: Bad)
Holmes is a little-known Stingrays piece. He’s currently their DH, but his real home is at second, and there are rumours of him pursuing a trade soon.

(SS) Jake Goodson (21, R) (Malidridad Mariners)
(Speed: Bad | Power: Bad | Contact: Good | Fielding: Very Good)
Goodson, a former first overall pick, is an elite fielder, but hasn’t really shown too much promise hitting for the M’s. Nevertheless, he’s returning for another IBS, and is an important player on this team.

(C) Isidro Short (19, R) (Nikcoro Suns)
(Speed: Bad | Power: Bad | Contact: Bad | Fielding: Good)
Short is the youngest player on the team. The pure defensive catcher was selected as a D-level prospect 45th overall by the Nikcoro Suns.

*If the team plays without DH: (Hurley – Broughton – Promises – Grey – Sullivan – Holmes – Goodson – Short – Pitcher)

Bench
(Catcher) Tyler Danson, 20, R (Currently in college)
(Infield (2B)) Mike Oeland (19, R) (Currently in college)
(Infield (SS)) Billy Kemp (20, R) (Xingcheng Renaissance)
(Outfield (RF)) Celina Lang (21, L) (Apple Valley Vipers)
(PH/DH) Tod Pittman (21, S) (Denison Dynamo)

Kits
South Newlandia plays in green and yellow, with yellow/blue caps and helmets and green pants. There’s an picture of an elephant featured on the baseball cap and baseball helmets.

Fans
South Newlandian fans are not rowdy or violent in any way, but you can expect a few of them in Hannasea. It’s not that far of a trip within Esportiva, but for every fan getting drunk, you’ll have twenty talking about the Average Expecting Batting Average of the reserve second baseman of the Malidridad Mariners if you catch my drift.

South Newlandian League

Roster Movements, Drafts, Rosters – Part 1

SNL North

Elephant Valley Homers
Image

Offseason Movements:
After missing the playoffs yet again last season, Daniel Nunez was sacked and replaced by Llamanean manager Tanya Ericsson. She was formerly with the Apple Valley Vipers and New Llama Cyclones and won championships with each. On the field, the Homers were one of very few teams not to add any pieces in free agency. Ownership wants to trust the process and wanted to add via the draft.

Draft: (held: 6th, 30th)
Starting in the redraft, the Homers held the 6th overall pick, but they instead chose to trade down. They found a trade partner in the Denison Dynamo, and got the 9th and 33rd pick from them. At 9th, they selected former Lexen City Rebel Jack Beard to bolster their pitching staff. Beard was a welcome addition, a valuable starter next to Darien Rodriguez. Soon after, they found yet another draft day trade, swapping picks with the Emerald City Greens. For their 17th pick in the redraft, they gave up the 6th and 30th picks in the amateur- and redraft respectively, also receiving the 17th pick from the Greens in the redraft. They did that to select Albert Vaughn, a Llamanean corner infielder who will start at third for them. Later, they spent the 33rd pick in the redraft they’d gotten from the Dynamo on Llamanean reliever Kyle Fang.
With the 17th pick in the amateur draft, the Elephant Valley Homers selected Val Thornton; quite a steal considering the A-grade on the rookie. After being passed up by half the league, the 22-year-old will start at second for the Homers. The 30th pick was spent on Myron Pacheco, a starting pitcher from nearby who had also been dropping a bit further than expected given her C-grade. Later on, they made one last trade-day move, getting the Masmow Dragons’ 46th pick in a rare inter-division trade. They gave up their second-round pick in the upcoming draft in return to select Michael Kennedy, a D-graded Left Fielder from Super-Llamaland.

Elephant Valley United
Image

Offseason Movements:
United had a couple of important movements. For one, they brought back Jacob Conroy. The South Newlandian ace had spent the previous years in Ko-oren with the Intermare Admirals, but will be back at the top of the rotation for the upcoming season. They also signed 31-year-old Connor Harris, a relief pitcher from Brookstation, to strengthen their pen, but lost reliever Reed Harper, who signed a contract to play in Ko-oren.

Draft: (held: 8th, 32nd)
In the redraft, United selected former Ratzupalfu Rhino third baseman Yousuf Henry 8th overall, and later selected Harper Yumizuka, Diarcesian Center Fielder who was with the Kinjestad Peacocks previously.
In the amateur draft, United stunned everyone with a blockbuster trade. They traded to move all the way up to the number one spot, giving up their 8th pick and the third baseman they just got, Yousuf Henry, to the Xingcheng Renaissance. They used that number one overall pick to select a generational prospect at catcher, S-ranked Llamanean Hansel Eriksen. Despite being only 19, he is showing signs of being elite. Later on, they selected D-graded Mollie Lloyd, a South Newlandian starting pitcher, with the 32nd pick.

Masmow Dragons
Image

Offseason Movements:
The Dragons got quite a few new pieces to help them for another playoff run. They gave free agent contracts to a duo of elite players from Newmanistan; namely Starting pitcher Julia Donaldson and the one and only third basewoman Lexi Burrows, who received one of the biggest contracts in league history.

Draft: (held: 22nd, 46th)
In the redraft, the Dragons selected Drawkian catcher Bradley Jenkins with the 22nd pick. The former Rebel and multi-time all-star is another great addition to the Dragons. With the 46th pick, they added Bucephalus “Bucky” Jiminez, a first baseman who is not expected to see the field much.
In the amateur draft, the Dragons added another starting pitcher in Nico Cagliari, a 21-year-old Llamanean C-grade with the 22nd pick, and traded the 46th away to the Homers for a future second round selection.
After the draft was over, the Dragons also struck up a deal with the New Llama Cyclones. They gave up Starting Pitcher Leif Best and two future second round picks in the upcoming draft, their own and the one they just got from the Homers, to acquire an elite reliever in Llamanean Justin Frazier, setup man of the Llamanean national team.

Ruditown Dachshunds
Image

Offseason Movements:
The Dachshunds really went off-season shopping. They signed free agents from all over, including ace Brianna Fitch, reliever Tori Fuller, and shortstop Hannah Mitchell from Newmanistan, starter Gene Almac and Right Fielder Pedro Moires from TJUN-ia, and Samuel Winter from Ethane, all of them WBC level pieces from their respective countries. They didn’t stop there, also adding Right Fielder Peyton Arias from Bollonich to bolster up their depth. Clearly, the Dachshunds were willing to spend a ton of money to shoot up to contend in the absolutely stacked North. The only notable loss was Carlos Rosario, their former 1B/DH, who went to play in Ko-oren.

Draft: (held: 20th/44th)
With the 20th pick of the redraft, the Dachshunds selected Ko-orenite Mason Bennett, the first selected player over 30. Bennett had previously been with the Kinjestad Peacocks, and the Left Fielder had started for the Dragonflies in WBC52. They signed another experienced player in Alfredo Swanson from Bollonich, a shortstop, previously with the Ratzupalfu Rhinos.
With the 20th pick of the amateur draft, the Dachshunds selected Llamanean third-basewoman Angela Bengtsson. The B-graded prospect will be offering day-one help to the team as well. They decided to trade the 44th pick to the Xingcheng Renaissance, and will receive a swap of second-round picks in the upcoming draft in return, unless the Renaissance have the worse pick, in which case the Dachshunds will not have to give up their second, and simply receive the Renaissances’ second-round pick.

LPB 1 PREVIEW: THE NORTH
"wow these guys suck"
Alice Kim, LSN Baseball

The first season of the highly-anticipated Llamaphant Pro Baseball is set to kick off next week, as the world waits with bated breath to see what the future of Esportivan baseball will hold. However, with a whirlwind free agency period recently coming to a close, it's time to consider what the actual teams on the field will look like, as we consider each of the twelve teams on the Llamanean half of the LPB. Today, we start with the LPB North. While it's largely considered to be one of the weakest divisions in the entire LPB, the lack of a frontrunner amongst these four historic rivals means that the north could be anybody's game. Expect all four teams to at best hover around .500, which could lead to a photo finish! But which also means that there certainly aren't any 100-game winners in this group.

Image

We start off with Dinesh Mohn's Apple Valley Vipers. Fresh from The Sherpa Empire to replace the departed Tanya Ericsson, Mohn is a big-name signing, formerly being the manager of his nation's NT at the World Baseball Classic, but has decided to seek a greater challenge abroad. He'll certainly have an uphill climb ahead of him - while the Vipers went 90-63 last season in a weak LBL division, they were exposed as pretenders in the playoffs, with the pitching staff, in particular, choking in humiliating fashion. While the small-market team continues to punch above their weight, rebuilding the starting pitching was priority number one for GM Kevin Weiss. And Weiss has delivered, creating a top of the rotation that can hold its own. He packaged the #5 pick in the redraft with other picks in exchange for Sophie City ace Emily Innis, before flipping talented reliever Noah Spencer to trade up and select Jason McAllister of Rogers. Finally, stud prospect Carter Wilkinson was taken fifth in the LBL draft. While the bullpen remains weak outside of NT reliever Evangeline Lu, the pitching should be greatly improved. On the offensive side of things, the Vipers are led by shortstop Emery Wu and flashy free-agent signing Rose Dawson from the Felswyr Fire. They've also taken a pair of promising young talents from South Newlandia in the draft, namely ex-IBS second baseman Charlie McCray and outfielder Celina Lang. However, the team lacks power-hitting threats and is relatively weak defensively, meaning that for all of Weiss's retooling, they might still struggle out of the gate.

Image

Meanwhile, up north, the newly-named Denison Dynamo are hoping to make their mark as the real Team of the North after a merger with ex-LBL club Svenssonfjord Dynamo. While Elisa Kristiansen's managing career has gotten off to an underwhelming start, after a late slump saw them fall below .500 last season, there is hope that the former shortstop and club legend can turn things around. The "Triple Js" of TJUN-ian international José Almas, stud draft pick Jonathan Roe, and the quietly excellent Jaden Calderón form a decent enough pitching core, and the signing of star reliever Kathryn Riggins will bolster one of the league's weakest bullpens. However, while the pitching now has the front-end talent, there are serious question marks about depth that could cost them dearly over the 160-game grind of the regular season. The ones to watch with the bat include Eshialand's Rebecca Saunders at first base, outfielder Killian O'Malley of TJUN-ia, and redraft pick Tod Pittman, a power hitter that the Dynamo opted to trade up for. But the lineup beyond those three also has serious questions, with catcher Giancarlo Ghiggia and shortstop Megan Herrera both defensively-oriented role players that are being thrown into the deep end. There is talent here - but there are far more questions for Kristiansen to handle, lest she find herself unemployed.

Image

Back south in Emerald Springs, the retirement of fan-favorite manager Shaun Chu has led management to seek a new direction for a historically excellent club that has spent the past few years stuck in neutral. Enter Ernest Telyatin from Zwangzug - while his taciturn nature and legendary disdain for anyone associated with the concept of journalism, his Will To Win (TM) and focus on retooling over rebuilding has endeared him to GM Kathleen Osman. Telyatin has prioritized the team's weak pitching staff as the primary place to improve, and true to form, he's decided to do so by throwing money at free agents. Kohnhead ace Ralphie Bloggs and Hapilopper NT starter (and knuckleballer, a rarity in the LPB) Eddie Headley anchor a completely-retooled starting rotation, with Wesley Reid and South Newlandian Jairon Suarez - both second-round picks in the redraft - filling things out. Telyatin also pushed for the team to trade up for slugging first baseman Jason Lamb in the amateur draft. Lamb joins third baseman Miranda Gray, formerly of Rogers, and Delaclav shortstop Valery Robiquet in a frightful top of the order. Not so terrifying are the team's incredibly thin bullpen - although Rockets reliever Lauren Allen will be doing a lot of carrying - and the rest of the batting order.

Image

Finally, the South Falls Athletics have endured tough times as of late, but are hoping the appointment of ex-Rhinos manager Fu Webb can shake things up. While Webb has largely struggled in the regular season, his SNBL championship does indicate some managing acumen that the people of Ruby Falls hope can translate into a return to form. South Falls' first, second, and third strengths are all run prevention - national team players Savanna Wladecki and Simon Chu and exciting prospect Wayne Dawson form a solid starting corps. The bullpen doesn't have a lot of big names, but Knetyohai Dynamo's Joseph Edward Jr. should be more than enough to ensure leads are preserved. The team's defense is also quietly excellent, with former South Newlandian NT player Korban Pitts and 13th overall pick Sylvi Vermark both strong defenders, and Charlotte Valdes shoehorned into third base despite also being drafted as a shortstop. The star of the team, Hapilopper NT starter and splashy free agent signing Bill Parent, is also a strong defender in addition to his contact and speed-oriented skillset. Unfortunately, the team just has no balance - the position players aren't particularly good at hitting for power or contact, and while run prevention should be fine, the offense outside of Parent might drag things down.

International Baseball Slam XV: A Preview

"That's right, it's time for another tournament that most of you have never heard of before! Of course, my name is Josh Seametzle, this is ENN Tournament Report, and I brought along a special friend for today, isn't that right?"
"You know I don't like baseball, why am I here?"
"That's right, Karsten Rhodes is here to help be break down the International Baseball Slam!"
"Again, why. Am. I. Here."
"Because you're contractually obligated to be here!"
"Contract schmontract..."

"So, Eshialand will be fielding its U21 team..."
"Not the real national team?"
"That's not the point of the IBS."
"So what is the point?"
"It's fun!"
"No, you know what IBS is? Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and it's not fun. Not at all."

"So, Eshialand's first opponent will be the U21 team from South Newlandia!"
"Oh gods no."
"What do you mean, 'oh gods no'"?
"Just... no. We're going to lose, that is that, end of discussion, let it be."
"How would you know this? How would you know South Newlandia does anything relating to baseball if you don't care about baseball?"
"Do me a favor and shut up Josh."

"So then, we'll be playing against the U17s from Super-Llamaland!"
"You've gotta be kidding me, both of them?"
"Okay, so it isn't the best group draw..."
"Seriously, what is it with Eshialand and groups of death? That's all we seem to get! We must be cursed!"
"Now, you must be exaggerating..."
"In World Cup 89 Qualifying, the poor soccer team got stuck with the top 3 seeds and the first unranked team to qualify in 6 years as their first four matches. In the Cup of Harmony, they got one point out of 4 matches in a group that had Vilita, Savojarna, and Mertagne!"
"Where does this apply to baseball?"
"Cursed I say!"
"Oy vey..."

"After that, we'll have the Hawks of United Adaikes."
"They should be somewhat more beatable..."
"Still not an easy fight regardless, I don't think."
"I don't remember them from anything."
"They're relatively new to the sporting world, but still a force to be reckoned with, I say."
"And only two teams make it out of this group alive, right?"
"Yes."
"Okay, we're done for."

"Lastly, before a bye on the final matchday, will be... the ICF Crocodiles."
"Do I remember that trigram from somewhere?"
"Well, it stands for Indiana Controlled Florida."
"Well... then... um... that's... okay, I have nothing to say."
"Nothing? That'd be a first..."

"So, overall, any thoughts on the IBS?"
"Third or fourth, crashing out of the group stage, terrible result, team gets disbanded, Eshialand leaves sports behind, monarchy gets overthrown, we get taken over by a communist dictatorship and have to spend the rest of our lives either in the propaganda machine or the salt mines."
"That's... an oddly specific take Karsten."
"Eshialand's an oddly specific nation."
"Fair enough. Well, until next time, I've been Josh Seametzle, the man practicing his salt mining has been Karsten Rhodes, and I bid you goodnight from Tournament Report and all of us at ENN.
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

MD1 cutoff

Some reminders about scores:
  • The designated ‘home’ team has their score listed first, but will be batting second.
  • xkoranate does not produce line scores. If your opponent has already RPed a line score please follow their distribution.
RP challenge for next cutoff: write an RP about one of your players (or staff) and their interests outside baseball!

A Chance Meeting
Here's my attempt at writing about what interests manager Ripaldi outside of baseball. Hopefully I've left enough mystery if I write about him again!

Dr. Toni Ripaldi was the manager of the Basian Clergy White Sox, a job that always required more and more hours and devotion of time. From establishing connections with managers and organizers of youth leagues to working on the development of the current squad, the grey-haired former army chaplain was constantly on his feet.

This year’s team brought a lot to the table in terms of talent. The playmaking was there, and the team’s cohesion seemed to be growing. The team was always a revolving door, with players coming in from the talented church leagues to Seminary, and then leaving as soon as they'd arrived on missionary leaves around Atlantic Oceania.

Today, the manager’s granddaughter was playing her first Tee-ball game, but his focus was elsewhere. His left hand fiddled with his keys, turning the object over and over in his pocket. He glanced at his smartphone, but the signal was still down, not surprising in the rural state of Morissland.

The volunteers on the field helped to position the kids around the field, as the children stumbled around the grass. Ripaldi pulled out a magazine, flipping the pages with his thumb, before arriving at a page with orange highlighted text. A bright red automobile occupied the majority of the spread, wheels spinning atop sleek blacktop. One name had been circled. Jerome Alkudi.

Ripaldi read the page another time, the glossy paper scrunched in the corners.

Jerome Alkudi: An untested racer for Basian Blac, Alkudi is an unknown face who hasn’t been seen on tape, or in any notable racing competitions. He is a newcomer that seems to have gained the trust of the team’s executives, who intend on selecting the 28-year-old to represent the team in the Capital Racing Cup, over long-time veteran Rabi Flos.

Ripaldi shifted in his seat. A child thwacked a ball to the grass next to first base.

“Great game so far, doctor?”

Ripaldi wanted to crawl within his own skin and disappear. Now was not the time for conversation. Still, he was always expected to be sociable. He closed the magazine brisky.

“I’m just glad I could see little Abby before I left with the team.”

He turned around to see the face of a mustached figure wearing a sapphire scarf draped over a scarlet button down and blue jeans. His immaculately clean boots, engraved with a jeweled cross, rested on the seat below him.

“I’m not sure we’ve met, Doctor. My name is Leeland James Jr., the senior pastor of Arena Chapel.”

The man spoke as if he were boasting. Ripaldi had never heard of this man nor his church.

“Is that a church around here?” He wanted to stop but couldn’t. There was an alluring quality to this man.

“You’re a busy man, doctor. I know you are.” Ripaldi did not understand why the man did not answer his question. He was beginning to become unnerved by the man’s presence.

The man got up and walked down the aisle to the row the doctor was sitting in. His boots clicked as he walked. He slid into the seat beside Ripaldi.

“Doctor, I know your vice.” The words, whispered uncomfortably close, pierced through Ripaldi’s chest. The man had stabbed him with them, taking away the doctor’s ability to think of a response. The preacher must have understood the effect he had on Ripaldi when the doctor’s face went pale.

“I’m not here to expose you.” The man whispered again. “I have an opportunity I wanted to share with you.” His tone implied sincerity, but Ripaldi knew better.

“I’m not interested in whatever you’re selling.” The doctor’s face turned away from the preacher.

“I’m certain that you will be.” The man slid a small envelope into his lap.

Ripaldi looked over the envelope, flipping it over to reveal a wax seal that depicted a sword slicing a coin in half, a symbol of chance in Schima Bas. By the time he had opened the envelope, the preacher had already left, his boots click-clacking up the metal steps, before fading out of hearing range.

Inside the envelope was a black card emblazoned with the same symbol, and a collection of small tokens held together on a gold wire.

The back side of the card revealed an image of a small snake with two heads and the following text, in golden lettering.

Games of Chance • Cash Only • Secure, Anonymous

Beneath that was a phone number.

Ripaldi’s granddaughter got up to bat. He didn’t have the spirit to cheer.

He turned his key over and over again in his pocket.
