Hot Takes Discussion

Postby Imperial States of Duotona » Sun Oct 31, 2021 4:12 am

This thread is dedicated to sharing and debating any "hot takes" you may have.

For the uninitiated, a "hot take" is a controversial opinion someone might have, or an opinion which isn't very popular amongst people. For example, a hot take I have is that Super Mario 64 hasn't aged as well as many people say it does. The controls (especially the camera) is very clunky and whilst the jump to 3D from 2D was huge, it's not as impressive as people still view it to this day (it's held on a pretty high pedestal still after all these years).

Normal forum rules apply: no trolling other users, no personal attacks (flaming), no spamming and so on.

Edited 30/03/22: Rewritten OP to make it easier to read by removing a lot of the red text and shortening it slightly

Here's an atomic level take: Fallout 3 is easily the worst of the modern Fallout games, hands down. I mean, let's be real here, as someone who is relatively new to the franchise (I started playing Fallout mid last year), what does Fallout 3 have on offer? It's got the worst aspect of New Vegas (gunplay/gameplay) and the worst aspect of 4 (writing/story), and even then the other two are much better in their respective 'worst' departments than 3 easily. Name more than 3 companions in base Fallout 3, or more than 2 interesting quests off the top of your head. And also the colour palette, what hot garbage is that! Grey, grey-green and gunmetal grey... bleugh! At least the Mojave is a nice smooth orange at its worst, there's not a single place in Fallout 3 that I can think of that isn't rife with these colours.

But yes, I dislike Fallout 3 heavily. Not saying that other people can't enjoy it, it's just that I can't stand it

Friends was a terrible sitcom that, among other faults, drastically overestimated the income and quality of life of 20-something museum curators and university lecturers in the 1990s.

Harebrained Schemes seems to have an aversion to money by refusing to start work on a sequel to their 2017 Battletech computer game.

Apple juice sucks. It tastes like sugary cyanide and for most brands it just tastes like plain corn syrup. Freshly squeezed homemade apple juice sucks too because it tastes funky. Orange juice > apple juice.

Nah. Most of general is just the two most popular takes dickwaving at each other.

Anyway here my latest: You how if a parent needs public assistance for their kid the government will go after the other parent for child support? It should be the same way for employers when their workers need public assistance. There is no reason why the public should be subsidizing businesses' strategy to offload labor costs onto public assistance programs through low wages.

I never understood why that show was so popular.

With the caveat that I thought the show was stupid at the time, too, here's what I would say was going on...

All the things that Millenials have ended up being defined by, increased education costs along with an increased over importance of a college education (I'm not down on college, but the combination of making it a requirement for things that maybe didn't need it, increasing the cost while decreasing the return has had a long term detrimental effect) and decrease in real wages/jobs etc was present for Generation X. But instead of having any of that being part of the conversation, like millinials, were were labelled as lazy and unmotivated. Before Douglas Copland's book Generation X became the dominant moniker there were things like "boomerang generation" because a lot of us had to move back into our parents house etc.

But at the same time there was a big tech boom where a select set of workers were basically striking gold about as reliably as 49ers did with the gold rush, which is to say not as frequent as was presented.

So we were forced into a secondary adolescence trying to get by on bad jobs with insurmountable debt and no national conversation and public attention turning towards millenials as they came of age because dumb ass Boomers didn't connect the dots between their choices and what was happening to subsequent generations so they felt that these youngin's would come along and buy the shit GenX kids weren't.

Like seriously, they thought we were shopping at thrift stores for aesthetic purposes and not just 'cause that's what we could afford...so they I swear to god, put 'thrift store' style clothes in Nordstroms for like $60 n'shit. Just...terrible.

Then there was something that only now is no longer a thing...Thursday night belonged to NBC. For like twenty years there was a block of comedies, generally aimed at the '18-35 demographic', that topped the programing, and GenX had been programmed by it. Cheers, Night Court, Cosby Show, Family Ties, Seinfeld, Friends...a lot of the iconic sitcoms that you heard of from the last two decades of the 20th century were all NBC Thursday shows.

So we already have this habit of tuning in to NBC on Thursdays and here's this group of people 'our' age struggling but not really struggling and living that secondary adolescence but without the weight of existential dread that a lot of people that age were actually going through. So it provided a sanitized version of our lives where shit was...easier. For the people things worked out for, who were able to go through college and find jobs whatever, that was their 'wild side' fantasy, for the people who weren't, it was a fantasy life were things weren't as bad and we could work as baristas and live in big ass apartments etc.

Also, cable was really just penetrating and finding itself so there weren't a lot of options.

It effectively put off a necessary conversation for a generation and made some members of Generation X feel like they weren't a lost generation to the point where they repeat Boomer shit now that they're old (much to my frustration...*). If you contrast it with the music that was being made outside the traditional corporate (like, all music was 'corporate' in some way, but boy bands were literally constructed by labels and PR firms) venues it trended towards angry and depressed and lost, and so they called it 'alternative'. Alternative to the rosy picture of Friends and pop music. For a lot of people they could feel things like "I feel stupid and contagious" or "the world is a vampire" or "I'm a creep" or "I'm a loser so why don't you kill me" or you can feel like you and your impossibly pretty six friends can get by on barista jobs and and shit and be happy. Some people found comfort in that. I guess.

That and, if you ask black people from that time (and they're not wrong) it ripped off a successful format from Living Single but literally removed allll the blackness. So there's that.

Friends was just an attempt to tarnish the rollout of Frasier.
