SACT Opening Classic Flag Tournament (CLOSED) [SACT Tankery]

Postby Mokastana » Fri Oct 29, 2021 9:38 pm

OOC: This thread is related to The Scholastic Association of Competitive Tankery, players must be already signed up on that thread before participating here.

1st Annual SACT Opening Classic Flag Tournament
Scholastic Site - Desert Fortress Training Ground,
Moxhuactl, People's Unified Federation

It was here, in the deserts of Northern Mokastana, that the first international tankery tournament would begin. High school students from around the globe had been flown in for this event, and the sporting aspect was clearly growing. Although in a desert on an outdated army base, a grass field was filled with vendors and food trucks from around the world. Each selling their own tank related merchandise. Grass was not native to the Mokan desert, but was artificially added to help cool the fields for visitors. Fans, misters and tents also helped to keep the outside cool, at least until the sun set.

Meanwhile the bulk of the event was housed in the Scholastic Dome, an air conditioned stadium big enough for a regulation football field, with seats all around a main stage. Four televisions hung from the roof, pointing in each direction giving the audience a clear picture no matter where they sat. Flags and banners from various schools were hung up along the outside and inside of the dome. Students sat in anticipation, waiting to see their first opponents in the tournament. On the main stage, the large screens displayed the blank tournament bracket, building anticipation. In the grand announcement ceremony, representatives from each school would be brought up on stage, as the Tournament judges began calling out the names of schools, and who they would go against in the first round. The only rule anyone knew so far was that schools from the same nation would not compete with each other in round one. This would give each country two matches to watch, and a chance to compete internationally for prestige.

Slowly, each match in round one was announced. First called to the stage was the Hurtian school, Kampfenburg Academy, revealed as KAGMA in the first round of the first match. With the representative from KAGMA on the stage, the judge pulled out an envelope with their first competitor. Opening it slowly, they read it silently, before announcing the present students and staff: "Match one will be between, Kampfenburg Armored Girls Military Academy, and.... Yuana Private Primitive Academy Group II". Soon all four matches of the first round were announced in such a way and a bracket was up on the screens for all to see. Since there were eight schools, a secondary bracket was added. Schools who lost once in their first two rounds would get a chance to compete for third place. The SACT leadership figured the extra matches would get more viewers from around the region, and thus more recognition for the sport.

For now, the games were about to begin!

SACT Opening Classic Flag Tournament
LEAGUE: CLASSIC
MATCH TYPE: Capture the Flag Tank
IC RULES:
  • All matches will be limited in metric tons as follows: 300 classic, quarter and semi finals 450 classic, and finals 600.
  • Matches will be timed to 4 hours.
Match ends when the timer runs out, or when only one flag tank remains active, or if one side forfeits.
  • A team shall be declared victorious if one of the following is achieved. 1) The first team to disable their opponent's flag tank wins. 2) The time runs out and the team with the highest score wins.
  • If a team's flag tank is disabled during the match by any means other than a hit by an opponent, they automatically forfeit the match.
  • Score is determined as follows: Damaging an enemy tank but not disabling it will result in 1 point, Disabling an opponent's tank is 2 points. 3 points if disabled in one shot.
  • Damaging and disabling tank hits will be determined by score tracking devices and judges.

OOC RULES:
  • This tournament will use the scoring calculations created by Mokastana. The math and calculations can be made available to users for review if desired.
  • Score calculator will factor in tank armour, number of tanks, tank weapon penetration, total team experience, Role Play posts, aggressive vs defensive tactics, a d20 dice roll.
  • Output will include victory/defeat and number of tanks disabled during the fight.
  • In this thread participants are encouraged to post about their teams, events, maybe some previous battle flashbacks. More posts will result in a higher RolePlay score.

Good morning, this will be the main thread for the First SACT Opening Classic Flag Tournament. Right now I just need teams to fill out their tournament applications. These will be used as your default stats in the tournament.

On November 12th, all applications are due and I will create the brackets for the tournament, ideally announcing it on November 15th. Normally, players will have a week between matches to add RP posts to increase their RP score, aka chances of winning in their next match. However holidays do make things messy and an extra week will be added in holiday weeks. RP posts don't need to be a lot, but at least a paragraph and tell us something about your team. Obviously, keep everything family friendly in your posts, I have no problem kicking people out if they make my life difficult.

Tournament application:

Aggression/Defensive Score will be used to determine the number of tanks “killed” in a battle and will be more for RP then calculation purposes. More aggressive will be positive, and more defensive will be negative.

School Name: KAGMA
Aggression/Defensive Score (+5 to -5): +2.8 gotta be aggressive since they rely on getting to good terrain and ambushing at closer range (although the can adopt a defense-in-depth, using artillery/spotters to force the enemy battle-line to over-extend itself and show weakness)
300 Ton opening matches team:
10 Su-76
5 Ke-Nu 75 (is a Ke-Nu with an M8 Scott/Stuart 75mm pack howitzer turret)
5 M 11/39
5 Chi-Nu

450 Ton opening matches team:
13 Su-76
8 T-70 (playing "defensively")

8 T-70
10 Ke-Nu 75
10 M 11/39
10 Chi-Nu

School Name: Hurtenberg Historical Scholastic Tankery Society
Aggression/Defensive Score (+5 to -5): -1.2, also "aggressive", but WAY more methodical owing to less initiative of the tankers and everything being an SPG aside from the IS-2s
300 Ton opening matches team:
1x IS-2 *flag-tank
15x 12.2cm FK (r) auf Geschützwagen, Lorrain-Schleppe
10 Verdeja Mk I Light Tanks
10 Verdeja 75mm SPGs

450 Ton opening matches team:
2x IS-2
15x 12.2cm FK (r) auf Geschützwagen, Lorrain-Schleppe
15 Verdeja Mk I Light Tanks
20 Verdeja 75mm SPGs

600 Ton opening matches team:
3x IS-2 Heavy tanks; 46 tons each
15x 12.2cm FK (r) auf Geschützwagen, Lorrain-Schlepper (Soviet M-30 122mm Howitzer on a French artillery-tractor as dreamt-up by a German dude tripping balls in Paris, last seen IRL in 1964) 7.7 tons each
30x Verdeja Light tanks
20x Verdeja Self Propelled Howitzers4

Can and will sometimes spend the entire match with the other team under constant 4 hour artillery bombardment using Verdejas as ammo-carriers.

I choose the second definition of it. This meaning rule by virtue and not owning land to be allowed to vote or hold political office. Instead one is required to serve time in the military (currently 6 years)

The Mokans had originally proposed the international tankery league to give young students a chance to practice with modern tanks. It was a plan to prepare them for military service, but internationally, the classic league, and thus the sporting aspect, had grown faster in popularity than the military aspect. Yet, even the classic league still had their roots in military history, and the students of the Gorbechov Military Cadet Academy studied it well. The T-44 had been the backbone of the Mokan Tank Divisions during the war with Morrdh in the 40s. Using these tanks, their "Guerra-Xolotl '' tactics gave them early victories as they pushed deep into the Morridane countryside. Now, the T-44 was their pride and joy as they prepared for the upcoming matches.

Leading the Tankery team for Gorbechov Military Academy, was 11th year student Paul Quetzal. As the excitement and confusion mixed inside him, he wasn’t sure what to feel at this event. He had been “promoted” to Company Commander for the Classic Team due to his exceptional work in the last two years commanding a LY9 Dire Wolf Heavy Tank in open matches at school, but he still felt that it was a message that he wasn’t good enough to get into the Modern Team. Sure, he had practiced in a T-44 in year nine, as the Tankery team would have it’s new members to get familiar with older armor first. Then again in the last six months as he and dozens of students had been training in the old tanks all over again. Most of his team was year nine and ten, the only year 12 student on his team, was a lazy mechanic from Paradisa, who got demoted to IS-2 maintenance as punishment for breaking her LY10's main gun. Up until this moment, it had all felt like punishment, driving ancient tanks nearly a hundred years old around while his friends got to play radar based hunting games in their LY10 Bloodhounds. Now, with the cameras and students around, cheers and roars of students from around the world, it felt like an honor.

Mokastana
Desert Fortress Training Ground
The Dome

The heat was scorching and the air dry and the wind was not cool. It was more like one just opened an oven. The massive structure that was a sports arena known as the Dome rose above the dessert landscape and dominated it.

The Fortress Military Acadamy Team rolled in with a lot of pomp and circumstance. The Monster, aka the M28 Super Heavy Assault Gun, rolled forward on its wide quad tracks. Grind forward would be more accurate givens its size and weight. Flags flew from its radio masts, the Republic Flag and the Flag of the Fortress Military Academy. Atop it stood the leader of the team.

Eva Kilgore, daughter of the legendary Lt. Colonel Eve "FMB" Killgore, Command officer of the First mobile Infantry. She stood tall and proud with a graceful body packed with lithe muscle and a serious look on her face. The dress uniform was called the classic "Pinks and Green" with a dark green jacket and tarnish with slightly pink hue pants. Under it was a tan shirt and tie. A variety of awards decorated her chest and she held a peaked cap under her arm.

Behind the monster came the 2 Harigolds Heavy tanks and 10 Johnny mediom tanksand then the 6 Bobby light/scout tanks. All with hatches open and crews sticking their heads out smiling and waving as the students excitedly looked around. The Fortress Tankery team was known for its discipline and capable members, often preferring the frontal assault and formation keeping with emphasis on scouting to win the battle.

The Fortress team took its position in a neat and tidy triangle formation centered on the Monster formation and Eva dismounted ready to meet the competition.

Then came the Morrigan Plains Private Military Institute. First came the roaring of the Republic National Anthem. Then came the roaring of the engines. Then came the Tank Destroyers.

They roared into the dome at full speed, in 2 lines as they circled the perimeter of the field. The 18 M18A1 Hellcats, which traded armor for even more speed and better suspension, led the charge with engines roaring and music blaring from the mounted speakers and they were followed by 8 M36a1 Jacksons, which like the previous model had traded armor for more speed and better suspension for improved off-road capability. Unlike the Fortress Team, this team relied heavily on speed and maneuverability and often emphasized individual initiative to seize opportunities.

The vehicles lapped the field 3 times then broke off the circling action and slammed themselves into the spot next to the Fortress Team.

From the Lead Hellcat lept and tall leggy buxom blonde girl with long hair, Georgy A. Cluster. Wearing the same uniform as Eva. She hit the ground smiling and donned her cap at a particular jaunty angle. Then she saw Eva and a huge smile broke out across her face.

"E!! IT'S SO GLAD TO SEE YOU!!" She squealed and ran at Eva's arms out stretched to envelope her in a big hug.

"Oh no" Eva said as Georgy vigorously embraced her in a very enuthasitic hug.

"I AM SO GLAD MY E IS HERE!!"

The Yuana School Guards entered their tanks with verve and took to their controls with the practice of generations. It had been nearly a century since the Tellan and Spear came into being and every new generation of students at the school. Evey new generation brought forward the knowledge of the previous and they knew their tanks and the best practices of them individually and as a unit through generations of effort. Most tank crews had spent hours upon hours a day inside the tank: Each crew knew their individual tank like the back of their hand and had spent thousands of hours in them. There was comfort and know-how in equal measure and as they moved out, they did so as they did many times before.

Yuana was faster than their opponents, with the Spear even being faster than their light tanks. It would be used to their advantage as they would try to get to the cover of the towns first and hopefully hit their opponent as they tried to move in, with the longer ranges and greater firepower of the TATG-4 giving them notable advantages. It also had armor that would prove difficult for KAMP to penetrate. On the flanks of the Spears, some distance back, would be the AFTR-40 Tellans. They were much faster and could thus respond quickly to a flanking move, while also being able to communicate such movements to the Spears. Each Tellan was operating on the wings alone, while the Spears operated in two groups of four. The flag tank would try to find the best cover from artillery- not that the howitzer in play was all that threatening to the Spear- and would add itself to the damage-dealing group.

If they stood back, then Yuana would be more aggressive, using smoke rounds to mask their movement and speed to close the gap. It would be more dangerous, but the speed of the force and the strength of the Spear all-around would make them better brawlers, while the Tellan would likewise be able to rapidly deal damage at speed. It was more dangerous but they would find and destroy the flag tank quickly if the Faith allowed. In this case, the flag tank would likely hang back in a town to cover the retreat.

---------------------------------------------------

The Fesker School had to deal with a different problem. They needed to get to short-range to hurt the T-44. The map had cover beside the towns, and if the T-44s got into them then it would be hard top flank. So, from the start of the match, the AFTR-40 Tellans of The Chosen charged across the field. They needed to get on the other side of the towns, the river bed, the mesas. Along the way, if they ran into the BT-7- the AFTR-40 did have the speed advantage, but the BT-7 certainly closed the gap- they would engage at their discretion. Once a T-44 was spotted the crews were to take evasive actions and switch to smoke rounds, with only a few tanks sticking to their APDS to deal with BT-7s. Once the distance was closed, it would reverse, with the tanks at distance providing smoke on the T-44s themselves while the tanks in knife range switched to APDS. Once they could put shots into the side, the T-44 would be brought down. In any case, once the flag tank was spotted it would be swarmed. The Fesker flag tank would hang back and try to remain out of sight of the T-44s until they were heavily engaged, at which point it would use evasive movements as it got closer and provide smoke rounds on target of the T-44s.

Leading the team from West Imperial Education Institute was an 11th year student by the name of Ri Shimada. Their collection of tanks were nowhere near as uniform as their counterparts from Gorbechov, but the tournament had begun and they had their first opponents set up. To Ri, the Timocratic Mericans were similar to the Mokans, loud and boisterous. The loudspeakers, multiple laps, and shrieks from team leaders highlighted the point exceptionally well.

While their western Dienstani counterparts showed off, West Imperial took to their tanks diligently. Cleaning the insides and outsides, crews inspected treads and engines, ensuring everything was still running smoothly after being transported all the way to Mokastana. While the westerners would probably do such things wearing swimsuits, throwing beach balls around, the Anuiens wore modest grey coveralls and gloves to keep grease and other dirt off their skin. After all, once the tanks were cleared, they would need to return in their school's ceremonial uniform and present arms.

To emphasize her ability to lead, Ri made sure her tank crew started first, finished first and were ready to present first. Her Panzer 3 was the flag tank, and as such it was her duty to lead the team both in battle, and as example. As her crew filed into the field from the locker room, she waited until everyone was present to begin inspections. First ceremonial uniforms, the crews white pants were crisp, blue jackets pressed, white collars stiff and the school's official Kabuto adorned their heads. The metal plates of the Kabuto interlocked to create a neck guard around the head, with the Imperial Crest of the School on the front. Only Ri carried a pair of ceremonial swords, while other tank commanders carried their much shorter blades to signify rank. With her tank inspected, she bowed to her crew and turned to inspect the rest.

As she did so, she thought of the coming fight. From what she understood, the Timocratic teams were borderline reckless, while she played more conservatively with her forces. If she could bait them into a trap, perhaps she could bring them right into a kill zone for her 75mm guns. At least those tank destroyers wouldn't require the heavy guns to take out, so she wouldn't be limited in her counters. Still, this was her first match with a non Federal team, and she knew that foreigners did things differently….

mood
KAGMA:
Slowly, each match in round one was announced. First called to the stage was the Hurtian school, Kampfenburg Academy, revealed as KAGMA in the first round of the first match. With the representative from KAGMA on the stage, the judge pulled out an envelope with their first competitor. Opening it slowly, they read it silently, before announcing the present students and staff: "Match one will be between, Kampfenburg Armored Girls Military Academy, and.... Yuana Private Primitive Academy Group II".

Garda's face lit-up upon hearing the team she'd joined -with some Veshayan volunteers to get them introduced to modern methods of warfare- had been called first, followed by crunching some "publicly available" statistics in order to formulate a plan for the Hurti regulars of the school, plus roughly a quartet of Froxian delinquents sent there, of them one name seemed strangely familiar, but she didn't look any taller than the other students... still... she'd read that engineered soldiers were generally better as specialized-infantry than as tankers... As her plan hinged upon their participation, she called out for her attention:

"Private Royce! I have a plan! You'll be sent to make sure the nearest village is clear of enemy armor and dismounts, after that we'll fortify the location and start setting-up hidden ambush-points and recon-areas. If they refuse to enter the town we can still damage their tanks with artillery-fire for points."

She'd left out the part that if Yuana was aggressive enough, the entire match would be over in less than 45 minutes, and all advancing would do is shorten that time to 35, but her other instructions to the Chi-Nu tankers would hopefully prove useful, their task involved placing decoys, essentially motion-activated blank-firing-guns to trick them into deploying into a battle-line and charging in directions other than where they would be, hopefully either exposing their flanks to a longball-shot from their 57mm gun with a HEAT-shell into their flank, or running into an AT-mine placed near the position.

But first was the marching-formation of tanks, with the Chi-Nu and Ke-Nu each leading a formation in-echelon to reduce dust being kicked-up in teh arid environemnts, followed by the Su-76s following the Chi-Nu's tracks in a pair of echelons, and the M 11/39s with their issued turret hurriedly swapped out for the older Ha-Go turrets they had leftover from the Ke-Nu conversions, followed by a set of Stielgranate-41s for each gun, with the Ke-Nu's hull-gunner station being used instead to store extra rounds for the village-defense. This rapid conversion was deemed necessary as the M 11/39's overbore grenades would be the only thing able to penetrate Yuana's Spear tanks frontally. The Chi-Nus and Ke-Nus meanwhile had burlap placed over their turrets as both a form of camo, and as a means to prevent the tankers and riders from burning themselves on the sun-scorched fuel. The tanks also had water-tanks strapped to the rear full of water to further reduce on the amounts of dust kicked-up, and the Chi-Nus specificly had bamboo unditching-logs lashed to the hull-sides with a second set dangling to act as a sideskirt and sandshield with a further set acting as front and rear fenders to reduce the likelyhood of being tracked from shell-splinters. The sandshields applied to the lighter Ke-Nu was more primitive, just simple burlap.

Royce and her team were escorted over to ride on top of the Chi-Nu mediums, since her interior crew-position was being taken-up with decoy-tanks, and was issued a 60mm mortar and a few smoke-grenades, plus one marked "DM". The pintle-mounted AA gun turned out to be an airsoft DPM, however a closer look would reveal the ammunition consisted of paintballs, allowing them to at least blind a tank if they could ambush it.

Garda could hardly contain her enthusiasm as she clambered aboard a Ke-Nu, initially destined for the same location as the main tank-thrust, "I'm so excited, this should be just like Operation Blind Knife, right Royce?" The Veshayans in dire need of training, were brought along as loaders for the team's many Su-76smainly as observers, and would be asked to dismount and assist the other dismounts in their duties of watching the carnage unfold in a MOUT environment.

MOAR MOOD
Hurtenburg Historical:
Hurty-Historical had a different problem. Their IS-2 flag-tank was slow and ponderous, to the point measures should be taken to force team Fortress to pay dearly for trying to flank her. And with the vast majority of their vehicles being self-propelled artillery or assault-guns, it would become a simple matter of seeing how well a 122mm gun could derp-slap a Sherman, with the Verdeja-series vehicles providing flank-protection for the IS-2's flank protection, the assault would progress very straightforwards and with little regard for terrain.

Although Fortress had Harigolds and Bobbies, their lineup at the 300 ton initial deployment did not field these showpiece-units.

The Yuana School was pleased with their victory. Their opponents had been cunning and employed strategies of a unique, possibly illegal, nature, but it was nothing they were not prepared for. You did not combat the Hurties without acknowledging the fact that they would do something unusual at some point. Yuana returned to their field preparation zone victorious. They piled out of their tanks and took to prayer immediately, thanking the Holy Marsh, the Arch-Bishop, and Chieftess-Queen Yuana, dedicating their victory to the former and latter respectively. Afterwards they immediately set to maintaining their tanks. Normally a team would have their own dedicated mechanical detachment but a conflict with the Engineering Shrine and a holiday mwant they were without most of them. That would prove to be less of a problem with Yuana than it would other teams, as part of making these vehicles an extension of the students had been dilling proper care and maintenance. The crew may have lacked the talent and religiously driven devotion to engineering but they had the training and skills.

Beyond that, new crews and tanks would be added to the second round, giving them a beefier recon force. Team Leader Chitra Sagar reviewed footage from the game between the Morrigan Plains and West Imperial. Morrigan had come out on top- once the range was closed, they were able to tear into their opponents with a good flanking move. Very skilled. Highly aggressive, very fast. And unlike their last opponents, Morrigan Plains had only a slight numerical advantage but had more dangerous aspects when it came to firepower and speed. She would have to formulate a new plan.

******************************************

Fesker limped back, in the case of two tanks more literally than not. It had been a devil of a fight and the light tanks had acquitted themselves well in open combat against the T-44 but it had come at a high cost. The attack had nearly fallen into disaster twice as the Team Leader had been taken out- and then his replacement less than fifteen seconds later. Luckily, their well-established protocols enabled the final Team Leader to take charge and turn it into a knife fight that the flag tank had won. Two Tellans had suffered some minor track damage. The crews reported that they would be able to participate in the final round, but not the second round. Team Leader Gurvir Seras had been properly chagrined for his role and swore to not allow a similar performance. As his tankers dismounted and they undertook their prayers and maintenance, he knew he had work to do.

Fortress had managed to defeat a very large number of tanks, and did so with some good luck on their side. Three tanks left was that critical point where your quality couldn't help you from being flanked by a numerically larger force. The 'Easy Eight' was the most mobile of a very mobile tank and had better armor than the base, but it still wasn't that tough to kill. The Fortress must have had excellent tankers to pull that off. He would have to-
-He was quickly spun around by his secondary team leader, Rajbir Telescara, who looked him up and down with calm fury. "This is another time when you lead us to near defeat, Gurvir. We cannot afford to be treated to such incompetency. I, Rajbir Telescara of the Scararishka, challenge you to fight for team lead."

The other team members did not pay too much attention. Leadership challenges were not uncommon in Fesker. Might makes right, but might not used right was the worst form of illness and would be corrected. "Rajbir, I accept your challenge. Let us tend to tanks first, then we shall settle, yes?" Gurvir responded, his mind half still on the enemy team. Rajbir nodded, and slowly worked his way back into the crowd of tankers.

Kylian Marett

Ashley Cressiarte

Amongst the spectators were some of AIKA's avant clique, consisting of a coach, escort, two civic militia veterans , a prodigy, trailed by a tag along guest. All dawned sporty sky blue, white, and gold polyester uniforms representing their team. They managed to get by as just part of the crowd, aside from an odd look here and there. It was all understandable, as AIKA nor their participants were of Dienstani origin and their foreign-ness was palpable. Pamphlets and seminars couldn't prepare them for it. The air itself seemed hostile, barely being driven back by the massive air conditioning system the stadium offered, somehow making the flat whiteness of the desert Kylian and Calle grew up in seem luxurious.

Kylian and Calle mumbled between each other, debating the legalities of the Hurtian assets.

"Indirect fire assets? Genetic modification? What is this shit?"
"They still lost. They treated this tournament as a game and became game themselves."
"Lets stay wise. It could be different for Modern"
"Yes, but the footage would make for a funny montage, no?"

Beside them, Narcis stood by his pupil, taking a passive interest in her enthusiasm. The other students weren't invited for this outing, but the extra kilometer Ashley took to be present for something she didn't have to be was worth interviewing. "Glad to come with?" Narcis asked Ashley, giving her peripheral attention.

"Yes!"

"Good initiative. You're making Brice work extra hard, but its no trouble otherwise. So, what would you say the value is to watch Classic matches, despite us participating in Modern?

Ashley sunk in her seat, digging for an answer between the mandarin collar. "Umm, we get to see what our enemies do with less"

"Competition, but yes. Their esprit is presented without the luxury of modern peripherals. Essential tactics are presented in plain sight. Very good." Catching an ear of tactics, Darian couldnt help but to add his input, stretching his neck out towards Ashley and Narcis.

"On the contrary, we see how they work around written limitations, such as genetically modified personnel." Interjected Darian.

Narcis was only slightly annoyed, but he entertained Darian's thought. "So it seems. If we had known earlier, we could've made things more interesting. He took a breath to reflect on how vicious some of the novel systems were and the losses it had taken to develop such things. "No matter, we have bullshit of our own."

"They'll know our names. They'll know Andrenade!" Spurted Ashley with a pep.

"Yes they will."

Gorbechov Military Academy

Team Captain Paul Quetzal of Gorbechov Military Academy replayed those final moments in his head. The final duel between flag tanks. They had been outnumbered 11 to 16, yet they managed to weed down the Marshites to the final tank. That small town proved great at concealing the two from each other. If only he had a BT crew to scout for him in those final moments. Still, the final trap had been good, he had to respect that. The Marshites were good allies, and great soldiers. He'd heard about their exploits in the Fascist War, and the Occupation of Ralkovia. He only wished he could have gone toe to toe in his old Dire Wolf. Still, he had a team to manage.

"Listen up everyone, we'll have plenty of time to mull over the details of what happened out there later. Right now we need all these T-44s ready for the next battle. You thought we were outnumbered in this match? Wait until we go against Hurtenberg Historical, they had 36 tanks last time and will probably be closer to 50 in the next match. We will only have 16, so I need these tracks cleaned up and repaired, damage buffed out, and gears greased up. Expect that they will have the numbers to hit us at every weakness we show, so make sure we have none!"

As much as it pained Quetzal, it was possible the IS-2s wouldn't even get a chance to show off in this tournament. Still yet, he needed to make sure their crews were working to help everyone else.

"Where is Alani?"

AIKA

Alani Kama was wandering the stands when she spotted a group of foreign students who looked like a team, with matching jackets and the like. They seemed like a good group of people to meet. She approached the group, her long dark hair tied up in a bun revealing a round freckled face with monolid green eyes. She wore grease stained, khaki coveralls, with the Jaguar and Saber Logo of Gorbachov Academy on the back and right breast pocket. It was unzipped about halfway down, revealing a plain white shirt and tight necklace made from sea shells. Approaching the team she waved: "Aloha! Comsta? You enjoying da show?"

West Imperial

Captain Ri Shimada maintained the illusion of stoic leadership expected of an Anuien officer, but inside she was a whirlwind of emotions: anger, disappointment, determination. In her first Federation match with Gorbechov, she had lost, and now she lost her first match in the tournament. Not only that, but she led her entire team to a complete destruction against those pompous Timocratic Mericans. They had the numbers. They even laid a trap for them. They got good kills. Still, nothing the Mericans did made any sense on the field, at least not until the final moments. Who mounted speakers to their tanks? It was humiliating. No doubt her leadership would be questioned after this tournament.

Still, she and her tank commanders dressed up in their ceremonial uniforms as their crews and mechanics started the clean up. They approached the team from Morrigan Plains to meet with the team captain. Their uniforms were once again spotless, crisp white pants, pressed blue jackets, stiff white collars, topped with a metal Kabuto, the crown and ruler Crest of West Imperial on the front. Upon finding the team captain, Ri would introduce herself. Her own black hair tied up under the helmet, thin brown eyes and warm pale skin was a clear indicator of her Anuien Heritage. Even more so her mannerisms, with a neutral: "It was an honor to compete with you." Followed by a short bow from her and her tank commanders.

They would need to return and change soon to get the tanks back into operational condition for the next match. In Ri's opinion, the Hurtians had played similarly to the Mericans, ridiculously, and it seemed like the Marshites' reckless valor took the day. Would Anuien rigid tank tactics work against the Hurtians, or would they be out of the tournament soon?

FESKER

The two Marshites squared off in the center of the tanks. As per ritual, the two eldest non-participants were chosen as retainers and were given the honor of preparing the field. They cleared it of debris and other factors that could make the duel unfair. Most of the crews watched from their tanks and worked on their tasks as the preparations were finished. Gurvir was attended to by Sevak Brosilia, who fetched his arms and armor. It took little to disrobe from the tankers attire and into the proper arms and armor for his fight. He was then handed his spear and shield and prayed. Across from him, Rajbir was handed his two-handed great axe by Hiana Jauscilia. Hiana and Sevak were from the same Clan if not Tribe and could be counted to be fair. Their roles were to look out for any signs of cheating, to ensure they kept within the bounds, and call the fight if at all possible. The rules for such an engagement, however, were very open. This was a fight to the 'death'- hopefully not, as they had prepared one of their Medical Machines in the interior facility. One could submit the opponent or knock them out, and the retainers were allowed to call the fight in favor of the opponent, forfeiting to save a life. Of course, most fights in the past would end in death. Now, they rarely did.

Both boys said their prayers and were joined by their brothers and sisters in arms. As they finished, they both stared at one another briefly before rising, armed.

YUANA

The Yuana School was having nothing as exciting as a duel. Instead, they were analyzing the patterns of their enemy and discussing their strategy for the next match. Morrigan Plains was perhaps the most aggressive team in the tournament, and the Mericans were well known for their loud and boisterous ways. That should not be taken to mean that they were fools. It would be easy to imagine them using these so-called loudspeakers and other means to trick and fool the Marshites, so Chitra made sure to remind them to assume nothing. They would be unlikely to be able to take the towns before they were well garrisoned. While the Tellans could arrive them around the time that the Hellcats would, there were certainly more Hellcats running around and Chitra did not wish to risk it for the town. There were other areas to be used for cover on the map, and they would do well to use them. It would also allow them to be flanked easier. They needed to keep the Mericans within their front as much as possible. The Spear could probably survive a shot from a Hellcat, more so at range, but when you factored in flanking and range it started to get dicey. And the Jacksons would have little issue.

It was decided to adopt a reverse V attack angle. Lead groups on the ends would be made up of two Tellans and two Spears each. Middle groups would consist of two spears and one Tellan each, while the end of the reverse V would be two Spears. Normal combat procedure would call on them to try and create a more even front to engage and leave reserves, but that would be unlikely to work here as well. Assuming the Mericans would also try to flank, they needed to meet them strength on strength. Meeting them as close as possible to congestion points would also hopefully prevent them from swarming one flank or the other too quickly. If they did that, then the Marshites would swing the V around and try to capture the whole force. The Mericans could also try to go mid. That would present challenges and advantages. The Mericans could summon a lot of mass and speed and break apart the V and turn into a chaotic engagement, where any lucky shot from anyone could kill a flag tank at random. They could also go mid and then swing to hit one side of the V or other and cause considerable casualties. Of course, moving en masse in mid would allow the Yuana school to engage a large grouping of targets inside what amounted to a perfect kill zone.

That was the hope, anyway. The crews feverishly followed and as she finished that plan, she looked at the clock- and realized she had time for more!

The Morrigan Plains Private Military Institute

",,,in short thing went more or less according to plan with our classic triangle divided formation," Georgy says now all business after the first match. Her figure cutting a serve and serious look in front of the projector screen. While she did have a boastful loud personality, she did not get to lead the team by being stupid or incompetent.

Georgy clicked a remote and the slide changed from a mao showing the previous battle.

"We took expected losses but were able to capitalize as per usual on our superior speed and maneuverability. We seized the initiative and controlled the flow of the battle. Remember that is one of our biggest strengths."

Georgy then clicked the remote again showing the Yauna School tanks and the map for the next battle.

"We start with out normal spread out formation with each unit separate but in supporting distance.
For the next battle, we will follow a similar pattern only hold the Jacksons in reserve. They are to play in the skirmisher role instead of attack. Their 90mms will be excellent for picking off enemies from 1000 plus yards. As for the Hellcats, remember to avoid extended engagements and being pinned down. We avoid the town period. We enter and we sacrifice our speed and maneuverability. Our two greatest assets. We meet Yuana on the open field. If they whole up in the town we surround it. Then we do hit and run around the edges and try to take out as many as possible while shelling it. As for their tanks, we can take them with our guns but do not get into a slugging match You. Will. Lose. Remember, speed, and maneuverability. Those are our biggest assets."

I choose the second definition of it. This meaning rule by virtue and not owning land to be allowed to vote or hold political office. Instead one is required to serve time in the military (currently 6 years)

The Fortress Military Academy Debrief/Planning Meeting

Eve stood in front of a large projector screen. She was wearing the standard coverall uniform for tankers but hers was press neat and clean with crisp lines and folds. She currently had a map on screen and with a controller/laser pointer she was pointing and lecturing. In the conference room was the whole Fortress Tankery Team.

"IN conclusion, Oddball you made some good moves but you got lucky."

"I know, Eve, sometimes you just got to go with the flow." This came from a rather sloppy-looking person. He was a boy verging on man, with his scrawny frame and patchy stubbly facial hair. His hair was longer than regulation and his coverall uniform was sloppy with stains and creases. He wore the old-style soft leather tanker helmet liner.

He was lounging in a chair at the head of the table closest to the screen. He was clearly very relaxed as he sprawled in his seat.

His name was Donald Suther. But everyone called him Oddball. He was odd but a competent and capable tanker and tank commander. He was the second in command of the team and had led the team in the first-round fight without Eve being there to command.

"Yes whatever" Eve said annoyed, like always, at his hippy speak. If only he was not so good.

"You will be leading the next fight as well. Oddball, you ready for that."

"I m always ready with my positive waves, b-Eve." He had learned the hard way Eve does not like being called baby.

"You know what to do?" Eve asks still annoyed with him. Which was the standard for her when dealing with him. Annoyed.

"Yeah, Eve. I let the hotshot Bobby scouts boys take off and do their thing. They like poking around and looking for stuff. While I hang back with the Johnnies. We stay spread out by like a 100 yeard or so in double teams." He finishes with a shrug.

"Yes and what else?" Eve asks, now sounding annoyed.

"They find them and fall back while we split up in two forces and hit them from two different directions." He says scratching his stubble.

"And avioding?"

"The town. We aviod the town as much as we can. Because we lack the heavies. But I make no promises. Things can get crazy with all the negative waves flying around. Folks taking this too seriously. We might have to dash through it."

Eve Sighed. It was the best she could do. Oddball took things like doctrines and orders more like suggestions. Still, he managed to pull it off, in the end.... most of the time. At least this match would be entertaining.

Kampfenburg Armored Girls Military Academy

Kampfenburg's antics had caught the attention of the judges, who were now trying to decide if they broke any rules. Apparently, they had thought that since decoys, paintball guns, and infantry mortars weren't explicitly banned, it was free game. The decoys could be argued as a reasonable tactic, as fake gun positions were a common way to get the enemy to attack a place away from your forces.

The paintball guns were essentially useless in the match, but the argument was that it was to blind other tanks. Still, crews were not informed of a paintball weapon in play, and it could injure dismounted players. However, those were far from the most grave issues. The biggest concern was the infantry mortar, and the round labeled "DM" which was suspected of being a chemical agent. The fact that this weapon was brought on the field in the last match was a concern, as it clearly meant the pre match inspections needed to be more strict.

However, that was tomorrow's concern, for now. The lead judges met to decide how to proceed. The Mokan judge brought up the issue, but chose to abstain from decisions, as it was a Federal Team going against KAGMA next and didn't want to seem biased. Leaving the Marshite and Timocratic judges to decide the outcome. The discussion was quite short, KAGMA was to be kicked from the tournament. In addition, their antics would need to result in additional rules for the league, as while some of what KAGMA did wasn't explicitly banned, it probably needed to be. Soon a pair of lower judges were sent to the KAGMA team's chaperone to deliver the letter:

Due to numerous violations of Rule Three [All ammunition used will be SACT approved paint rounds, hits will be scored based on point of impact, caliber of firing weapon, and armor rating of the impacted tank, using 'Score Tracking' equipment.], including what has been identified as a chemical weapon [diphenylaminechlorarsine], The Kampfenburg Armored Girls Military Academy(KAGMA) has been formally expelled from the 1st Annual SACT Opening Classic Flag Tournament. KAGMA shall be allowed to remain in the league, and participate in future events, provided these violations never occur again.

A full list of violations may be found below:

  • One count of possession of a chemical weapon, violation of rule 3
  • XX counts of use of an unauthorized infantry weapon system, one violation per unauthorized round, violation of rule 3
  • XX counts of an unauthorized paint weapon, violation of rule 3
  • XX counts of using of an unauthorized ammunition in a match, "paintballs" and "mortar rounds-smoke" violation of rule 3

Thank you for participating in the Scholastic Association of Competitive Tankery.

Morrigan Plains Private Military Institute Team Depot

Georgy and her crew were crawling all over their tanks making sure they were ready for the next match. She looked over the outside of her personal tank destroyer Mutt. Even checking the side art on the turret, which showed a dog driving a very styled Hellcat with flames shooting out the oversized rear of the vehicle as the animal held a steering wheel in one hand and stick shift with an 8 ball top in the other.

Over the image was the name Mutt and below it was the name Flash Gitz which was the unofficial team name for the Morrigan Plains Tankery Team.

Georgy smiled at the art. It was a Cluster original.

She went around to the back of the Hellcat. The back deck was opened up completely and the mechanics and crew were deep in the guts checking everything out.

Georgy walked up to the chief mechanic of the team, Paula Francis. A short rather cute girl, holding a clip board and dressed in some greased stained overalls. She did not actually crew a tank but led the Repair and Maintenance side of the team. She was much smarter than she looked, currently working on her Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (with various specialties) at the school.

"How are my speedy babies?" Georgy asks in her usual bouncy energetic manner.

"Everything seems to be checking out with the new transmissions."

" I knew it would. Your genius was involved!!" Georgy said smiling broadly.

"I know. But things were still just restored experimental machines. I am aware of the advantages they offer. I mean we can go just as fast forward as backward and they can supposedly handle the R975 Cyclone engine at emergency power. Unlike the stock transmissions."

"Well we did modify the engines with all the possible historical upgrades. What? The supercharges, emergency cooling?" And she leans in a little now and whispers "And the governor deactivator. we are pushing what? 625?"

"Close to it at least. And these can handle that at least just long enough for the engines to self-destruct when we run them that hard."

"Yeah but still," Georgy says speaking normally now "If it's good enough for you it's good enough for me."

Paula just shrugs.

Georgy spins around and cups her hands to make an improvised mega phone.
"HEY EVERYONE!!! YOU ARE WORKING GREAT!!! LET'S KNOCK OFF EARLY. GO AHEAD AND CLEAN UP!!""

The teammate's cheer and Georgy smile as she heads out herself hoping to grab a bite to eat before the dinner rush so she could get back and study the maps of the terrain more.

Fortress Military Academy Team Depo

Oddball was laid out in a lawn chair under an umbrella watching the crew's work while he munched on some cheese and drank some grape juice. Under his chair was a worn old brown woven picnic basket. He watches the mechanic dive into the guts of a Johnny. It was his own one, Good Vibes, it was named. It had developed some engine trouble last game, but it was to be expected as it was run hard.

He looked over at the Bobbies as they were getting a new bit of secret gear. It was a radio detection and direction finder. Perfect for the scouts to use and locate the enemy. It did cost some room and a few rounds of ammo but it was worth it for the scouts to be able to quickly home in on the enemy and report back. as far as he knew it was not cheating but he never asked the judges.

As far as he was concerned it was pretty much fair because he was not actively intercepting the enemy's radio communication.

He looked back over to another Johnny and smiled. They were installing the new-ish retro speakers for when they decided to play music in battle. Eve could put down some negative waves on it at times, but hey when you are driving a tank, it's not a stealthy thing period. Might as well take advantage of everything.

He looked over and saw The Monster as he called it. Its real name was Big Chungus painted in grey letters across the back. It was squat-looking with it long high-velocity 105mm gun sticking out the front. The crew and mechanics were crawling over the back checking the engine and ... getting its war horn worked on. The war horns were regulation-issued material for the vehicles, even the Harigolds and Johnnies could get one attached. But the one on the monster was a beast of a horn that spewed out a noise that could be used to guide ships into a safe harbor.

Oddball thought a minute then decided it was time to be somewhere else before they started testing it. He folded the map of the battle area and put it in the picnic basket along with the bottle of grape juice and cheese closed the lid and headed out.

I choose the second definition of it. This meaning rule by virtue and not owning land to be allowed to vote or hold political office. Instead one is required to serve time in the military (currently 6 years)

Gorbechov Military Academy

Team Captain Paul Quetzal of Gorbechov Military Academy had left his crews to handle tank maintenance, while he hunted down Alani Kama. She was a brilliant mechanic, but often got sidetracked. The team had taken a beating in the last match, and he needed every hand on deck. He started by looking at the other teams, starting with Fesker. He figured there was a high chance she had gotten curious about the tanks they just faced, and wanted to learn more. However when he got there, he saw two students in old fashioned armor, one wielding a spear, the other a great axe. They were circling each other, looking for weakness.

Quetzal looked around for a marshite chaperone, an adult to verify this was permitted, but couldn't see one from where he stood. A faux strike to get a reaction was met with a block and counter, but the attacker pulled back as intended. Without missing a beat, he ran up to the fight to watch before it was all over.

Moka you are a land of pimps, prostitutes, drug lords, and corruption.
We love you for it.

FESKER

Like most real fights it had been decisive, and one of them had been led away trailing blood. Led away quickly- the spear had punctured clear through Rajbir upper chest and through his back. A killing blow to be sure- luckily, it would take just a minute for Rajbir to be inserted into the medical system through a machine in their prep area. He would survive. Indeed, he would even likely be able to fight that very day. However, protocol indicated that as a failed challenger, both Rajbir and his crew would sit out this next match. Such was the punishment for a failed challenger. Gurvir cleaned off his spear and robed himself back up in tanker's firmament, going over both the fight and the battle upcoming. Certainly they had entertained someone- a duel with axe and spear off to the side? Marvelous. But he was not here to entertain. He was here to win. Rajbir was stronger and bolder. Good qualities. Fatal when your opponent knew your tendencies. As he washed Rajbir's blood off of his hands, he considered the lessons of the last match, as well as the next opponent.

Fesker had a distinct numerical advantage, and would be capable of sweeping aside the Bobby. What they could not afford was sit at range and duel with the Johnny Eights. While their gun was capable of defeating the Merican tanks, they would need to close the distance to do so reliably. Would the Mericans choose to use the town? Gurvir thought it unlikely. That tactic did not seem to fit the bold, movement based actions that seemed to breed themselves inside the hearts of the Merican. The town would likely be flanked. To meet them there would be dangerous, but it would have to do.
"We shall adopt the Sparky Claw. Five, five, two-zero-two, one," he said as he finished cleaning. His crews nodded. They would operate in five teams of five, with two 'claws' on each flank and none in the middle. There would be one reserve. "One will hold- flow to flank that we hold," he continued. Chances are that with ten Tellans on either flank they would be able to breach one, if not both, and truly have command of movement. The reserve team would move into action when this happened.
"Aggression. Close. Johnny Eights are good tanks, mobile. Work with claw to identify and remove threats. Standard casualty procedure. If flag tank identified, that claw is authorized to sacrifice itself to destroy flag tank. Tank losses matter less than victory," he said as he looked up at the clock.
"We break for feasting. Return to victory. Praise be the Holy Marsh!" He said, with the answer of "Marsh save the Queen!"
With that, Fesker broke for dinner.

YUANA

Yuana Team Leader Chitra Sagar released her crews for dinner not long after she was finished wrapping up their plan. She had made a few small adjustments based on feedback. One was the decision to put a tanker permanently on the mounted machine gun. This would be the commander. The tank destroyers they engaged were open topped. That made the crew far more likely to be raked by machine gun fire. Even if 'hits' weren't being scored, the crew would have to take actions to keep them safe. Any action you had to take to keep yourself safe would harm operation of a tank, even in minor ways. With hat and other small additions, Chitra finished the work and released her team for dinner.

She stayed behind for a few minutes, anointing each one of the tanks that would be involved with the holy sigils of their work. When she was done, she opened up a small covered plate and moved into the stands, where she found a seat (not far from AIKA's clique) and started to eat.

Fortress Military Academy Team

Oddball stopped to watch the duel and shook his head.
"Man all these negative waves and hostility. Ain't none of it good for having a good time." He said more to himself than anyone. He even felt a twinge of sadness as he saw one of the Marshite carried away bleeding very badly. It seemed kinda pointless honestly to Oddball

He walked on to see the Yuana Team Leader Chitra Sagar drawing symbols and making prayers over the tanks.
"Finally some positive waves around here."

Now curious Oddball walked over to actually see what she was doing and observe the prayers and symbols. He then followed her to where she was eating and took a seat next to her and opened his picnic basket.

"I gotta say, that was some nice waves you were putting out over there on your tanks and all. Much better than the negative waves the other Marshy were putting out. Sorry name's Donald but everyone calls me Oddball. I think you are-"He looks at her for a second with his classic slightly slack-jawed vacant expression that seems to say his mind is a million miles away. Then his face scrunches up for a minute as he rummages through his memory. "Chitra Sagar." He says butchering the pronunciation in the process.
"its a pleasure to meet you"

YUANA

She was opening up her meal for the day when she was approached. A nutrient bar wrapped with the Iuski leaf of her home clan and some water to dunk it in, plus a cut of mutton, would be enough for her. Then a larger boy approached. She was happy, then a Merican approached. When she allowed herself to board the aeroplane en route to this destination, she was briefed on the nationalities of the other competitors. The Mericans were bold and loud and confident in a way that could appear arrogant. They were good to have around. She was happy to facing them. Happier still to return home- the fewer cellular phones she saw the better- but nonetheless good. Once she graduated to the Yuana Guard and received her training and duties to the Dynasty she would be unlikely to leave again, so she would take the indulgences as she could.

She had to think about what she said. It was easy to speak her native tongue, but the common tongue shared by outsiders did not come as naturally. She had to turn over a few of his words. "It is nice to be seeing you, Downald Oddball," she said, ignoring his mispronunciation. It was an effort. "I am giving the position vibe for my tanks through holy work. It is good, proper. Fesker fight was needed, good. Dominance, important among their tribes. Strong lead," she smiled. "Makes easy for Yuana Guard beat them. Unity for Dynasty, precedes the victory. You, Fortress, you won well last game. Numbers matter little when determination prevail."

FESKER

Rajbir was dragged through the back. He trailed blood the whole way. Indeed, he was barely clinging to life. The blood loss alone would have been enough to take down a weaker man, let alone the gaping hole in his upper chest. His breathing came in haggard. He was choking on his own blood, drowning while bleeding out. Yet as he was dragged, his teammates did not try to save him. They were forbidden. He had made the challenge and had fallen short. He would need to survive long enough to make it to the machine to be even worthy of it. A minor punishment, to be sure, but it kept him conscious despite every aching nerve demanding he fall unconscious. In time- minutes at most, might as well have been hours or weeks for him- they made it to the secured locker room, where the local Shrine had donated a few medical machines. Rajbor was dragged and tossed into one, his body naturally falling into position. The on-site doctor pressed a few buttons and the machine closed, fogging up as it went to work. As he was worked on, his crew washed their hands. By the time they were done, the machine opened and a disgruntled loser rose from his position.
"...Fuck..."
