I spent the better part of a decade selling people their music, let me let you allllll in on some secrets:
Everyone's music tastes are 'eclectic.' Everyone has that example that they think is an impossibly juxtaposition that means they listen to 'anything'. Everyone. Eeeeeeeveryone. And man, did I get tired of people telling me about theirs. It's probably a hard thing to conceive of now, and you can take it as an indictment of previous generations, but there was a time in which certain people felt it was important to impress the person ringing them up with their music tastes. We 100% never cared, they 100% told us anyway.

But the take away here is, even people who would say "I only listen to x type music" had at least on thing in their collection that would get highlighted during a round of 'one of these things does not belong.'

Listening to more than one genre of music or liking a song out of a genre that you normally don't like doesn't make you stand out. It makes you a person with ears.

The second one might seem like it runs contrary to the first, your tastes are not as eclectic as you think they are. While music genres are ultimately vaguely defined and arbitrary in some cases, they are grouped on a sort of common demoninator, the recognition of a confluence of similarities that you can then identify as a genre. But all music is built of the same building blocks or rhythm and melody (yes, even rap imaginary person who needs to come to terms with their racism. Rap is music) and those blocks are built on a common set of influences. The only to completely pure foundations of music are rhythm (the beat of your mother's heart is the first thing you hear, and it's something that is going on in the background until you are dead...if you isolate yourself, you hear your heart which means you're hearing your heart in the background the entire time) and the pentatonic scale that just so happens to be the overtone structure of the human voice.

Everything that is built out from there is both arbitrary and subject to a shared commonality. This is why music from a culture you're not familiar with sounds strange and dissonant to you but normal to the people of that culture, because they grew up with it, their ears have become familiar with harmony as they've defined it.

Because you 'learn' what music is by repetition, and then you individually start to discover what parts of that you like the best.

The idea that those would entirely fall under the arbitrary lines drawn by genre would then seem ridiculous. And since this is by and large an arbitrary reaction you're having and not a decision you make, unless you have a really deep understanding of music including the way it affects people you're not going to always identify it or be able to articulate it, so there's something you've been hearing in the things you think you normally like that you then respond to in something you think you normally don't like and WHAMO! you have an eclectic music collection that has an invisible connective thread you may not be able to put your finger on.

So you don't have to fall all over yourself to qualify your answer with "I listen to what I like and isn't this mash up of two genres just the greatest proof of how wide my tastes are" because that makes you pretty much everybody and also it means that you haven't identified the shared thread yet and you don't have to. The point of music is to enjoy it, not to wear it as a merit badge.

No one is even going to read that and if they do the usual response is "No, but see, I'm special because..."

Which is why we always just said, "That's crazy, man." and handed people their bag. I ain't got time to validate you, I'm just marking time before lunch when I can go over to the artist's room and get high.


Anyway, to answer the question, primarily jazz with a preference for 'avante garde' and free jazz. It's also how I correct people who say they listen to 'everything'. About thirty seconds into Lacrosse by John Zorn (link not actually John Zorn) or just Free Jazz by Ornette Coleman and people start passing out asterisks to their 'I listen to everything.'

I also like contemporary experimental composition. If I called it 'classical' some pendant would flip their shit, but colloquially...look, it'd be in the 'classical' section of a music store. Again, a rough ride for the 'I listen to everything' crowd most of the time. Not always, but most. This comes from studying music for a really long time and being exposed to that kind of music at the right time. Even then I eventually had to make a pathway back to it before it was more than just a novelty.

Music I can play with the uninitiated, Pink Floyd, I like just over half the ska I hear but when I don't like it for some reason it's just awful, bands with a penchant for ironic or surrealist lyrics like They Might Be Giants or Soul Coughing, soul music via Funkadelic and Parliament and I know people usually say Parliament/Funkadelic but I wanted to emphasize which I like the mostest.

Also a sucker for anything with a horn section. Personal bias as a horn player. Geeked out in another thread about one of my favorite bands that sound like a band, Cherry Poppin' Daddies of which I'll only say that Zoot Suit Riot is not a representative sample of that band. But I have come to accept that they are the punchline to the 15 minutes that swing was popular in the 90s.

Music that incorporates the spoken word (there are forms of rap I like but that's not what I'm talking about, this is more spoken word with music behind it) I'm a sucker for as well. That can take the form of things like Ken Nordine's "word jazz" or compositions Sing Sing: J Edgar Hoover by Micheal Daugherty performed by the Kronos Quartet, one of my favorite groups.

What we use to call 'hippy rap' or joke about being the rap that white kids could listen to before the big market push towards so-called 'gangsta rap' because the other kind was uncomfortably socially conscious (if you're conspiracy minded, but I was there, the labels actively did promote one form over the other, insert your own theory why)...stuff like Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development, De La Soul, Dispossable Heroes of HIphopracy, I liked that stuff more or less. I realize it never went away and now people like Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino have brought it forward again. We Don't Do the Same Drugs Anymore is a song that almost makes me cry every time I hear it because the sentiment, that moment of realizing that the person you've been sharing a path with has been walking on another path and it's not a fault but just sometimes paths diverge is huge to me and that song so perfectly nails that feeling.

And some other shit with connective tissue that maybe I haven't identified yet.

I'll spoil that pile of self congratulatory pretension for the sake of the thread.

This is such a cool and informed statement about music taste and it actually makes me feel less pressure to try to define what I listen to in a way that will be respectable to others, thank you for sharing your experience, cannot think of a name.

I think I have once come close to discovering something like your "invisible connective thread," which was when a friend of my roommate's asked what kind of music I listen to and my roommate (who is a driven and talented musician) immediately responded that everything I listen to "has a little bit of the blues in it." I think that it was quite apt. Currently, I've been listening almost exclusively to Gaucho (Steely Dan 1980) because I canceled my Spotify Premium and it's the only album I like on my phone. Also, cannot think of a name, I was a teenager in Chicago when Chance was blowing up and Same Drugs makes me cry almost every time, too.
