Life on the Edge
An Adabian tries to make it in the racing world

Chapter 2: First Offer

December 25, 2034 / 14 Shawwal 1456
Adab City

Mustafa al-Taghlibi leaned forward at the computer screen, squinting his eyes through the glasses and putting his neck over the seated Aida Kaykali’s shoulder, her fingers dancing on the keyboard. Behind them Shalmaneser Kalhu stood solemnly, leaning back against the wall.

“Va… sily… Semyon… novich… Gatutin,” Mustafa began slowly, reading the address of the email sender. Aida could see him shaking his head a little. “Are you sure this man isn’t a communist?”

That comment seemed to take Aida aback somewhat. “Why, uh, why would you think he’s a communist?”

“I don’t know,” Mustafa admitted, muttering. “The name just screams communism to me. Maybe I’m just stereotyping.”

At this point Sal quietly launched himself from the wall. “Well, apparently they call themselves the Democratic People’s Republic of the United Socialist States of Pridnestrovia,” he said, getting both Aida and Mustafa to turn their heads around at him. “But, they may not be, you know, really socialist, like 100% socialist. I mean they’ve got a racing team, which is like, a capitalistic thing. I mean this Vasily guy may be a communist – I don’t know about his personal political beliefs, after all – but he may also not be a communist. He may be a socialist for all I know, like his country.”

“Well, they’re running a racing team,” Aida offered rather meekly, turning at Mustafa. “I mean that doesn’t strike me as a communist thing to do. I mean have you never heard of this Pridnestrovia country?”

“I’ve heard of that country,” Mustafa countered. “I just don’t have business dealings there, and there are God knows how many countries in this multiverse. I can’t possibly keep track of them all! I’m just here to make sure Sal gets into a good team, and now apparently we’ve received an offer from some godless commies.”

Socialists, Sir,” Sal corrected. “At least that’s what the country’s name says.”

“I mean it’s not like they’re going to force Sal to give up his religion and turn socialist,” Aida said. “And well, uh, we do have Islamic socialists here, so there are religious socialists. Not sure about religious communists, but even socialist and communist countries are often more tolerant of religion than people think, since banning religion completely can cause the population to revolt, so I think there’s still space for Sal to drive for them and still be a Muslim.”

“Look, if this is what you’re concerned about, Sir, I won’t turn apostate,” Sal said. “I will remain true to my faith, and I’m guessing that they need me just as much as I need them, maybe even more than I need them. Besides, you know, leaving my faith can, uh, negatively affect my following here in this country. And you’re a businessman with political connections. You know even capitalists often deal with socialists and communists through backchannels.”

“He’s right, you know,” Aida told Mustafa. “Don’t worry, Sir, they’ll let Sal be Sal, and we’ll just let them be them. It’s a mutually abu- I mean beneficial relationship as far as I can see. What matters for now is that Sal will test out for this team, because for all we know this might be his only chance at a drive. The most important thing for now is that Sal breaks into WGP2. Then we’ll see how things progress from that point on.”

“Well they better let us be us,” Mustafa muttered. “I don’t want them coming for our precious bodily fluids.”

Kyidawa Sherpa was vaguely aware that it was daylight, but he had not yet worked up the energy to get out of bed. His date from the night before -- a transwoman named Tsamji who was not very far into her transition and did not pass at all -- was snoring gently beside him. Tsamji's shimmery dress and costume jewelry sparkled on the top of the dresser, and her glittery make up had rubbed onto the pillows and Kyidawa's skin. Bottles, candles, and bowls were scattered around the room. The TV still showed the start screen of Khamdo NSSCRA Racing, a video game they had played the night before. Tsamji wasn't very good at it, but they'd had fun anyway. They'd also played Avalanche and Wushu Warrior.

Kyidawa's phone blooped to let him know he had a new email. He only had those alerts set up for his private email that he used for serious business, not the one he used for online shopping and streaming subscriptions. He thought it might be Caravan Oil following up about a possible sponsorship deal. He rolled over to the edge of the bed and looked around to see where he'd left his phone. Behind the ash tray. He picked it up and looked at the email. It wasn't from Caravan Oil, but it was something else just as interesting: an invitation from UrGa. "Oh, awesome!" he said. He sat up and typed out a reply, stopping a couple times to check his English using online resources. The movement was enough to make Tsamji stir, but she just rolled over and went back to sleep.

Kaylan Racing Team HQ
Tushlark, Togonistan

Niko Ausage, head of Kaylan's scouting department, was busy reading through the e-mails that had landed in his inbox. The grey-haired Togoni man in his late 50s was one of the oldest members of Kaylan Racing Team. Having driven in the local Togonistani racing scene and brought home countless of trophies during the early days, Niko had missed out on the motorsports big rise in popularity in the nation. Back in his driving days, racing was nothing but a niche hobby driven by a small group of enthusiasts, with their actions sometimes being left in the legal grey area. By the time the sport had started taking more shape in the nation, with the birth of Togonistan Motorsports Association bringing more regulations and pushing it more to the wider popularity, Niko had already retired from the sport. Still, the passion was very much present in his heart, which is why ten years ago he didn't need to have a second thought when Kaylan made him an offer of becoming a driver coach and mentor figure for young drivers entering the sport through their program. With the company back then still being in it's infancy, it had taken time and a lot of hard work to build the whole Kaylan's racing division, including the Prospect Program, to what it was today.

Niko had been attached to Kaylan right from the start. Over the years, he had brought names such as Serano Matula, Levi Afakasi and Dom Falepeau to the grid in domestic TTRL series. By the time Kaylan started expanding to the international series and fielded a team to WGP2 for their first ever season, Niko had taken charge of the whole youth development program. He had an important role in helping Kaylan's WGP2 team principal Tanielu Felafa sort out the driver line-up and bringing homegrown driver Isaia Fanene on the grid for the second season of WGP2. While the large majority of WGP2 team's core membership got swapped out after Xander Mahakipare took over the Team Principal spot from Tanielu last season, Niko was one of the few still being kept aboard and had been the one suggesting Xander to sign young Ted Pressley, seeing a future talent where other teams didn't.

Now, however, he had a task to fill. With Kaylan shifting all their WGP2 assets to their ''new'' WGPC team, another Togonistani team in the form of Domerton Motorsports had been approached to take the spot left open by them on the WGP2 grid. While the everlasting Kaylan-Domerton rivalry in TTRL was one of the fiercest ever seen in Togonistani domestic racing series, the two teams still had maintained a respectful relationship towards each other. Domerton had used Kaylan engines in the Novapax-based WGP3 ENZ Championship as well as given seats to multiple Kaylan junior drivers over the years. Hence, it seemed like a logical step to approach the second most successful Togonistani team for partnership during the upcoming WGP2 season. With Domerton running the team and Kaylan providing them the engine, chassis and technical support, it was agreed that Domerton would act as Kaylan's official junior team for the upcoming WGP2 season, with Kaylan having a final say in forming the driver line-up. That final task, of course, was put on Niko's shoulders. While it had already been agreed on beforehand that their current academy driver Darian Vilau would get one of the seats, the other one was still very much open and would more than likely be secured by a new driver being brought into the academy.

Having spent what felt like an eternity on ticking boxes and deleting various spam messages from his inbox, Niko eventually managed to sort out his e-mails and dig up the ones that were currently important. Apparently, seven drivers with intentions to participate in the upcoming season of WGP2 had approached him in search for a seat. While some e-mails had initially been sent straight to Domerton instead of him, the person handling their communications had kindly forwarded all the messages to Niko's inbox. Some names ringed a bell for him, such as Batu Tüvshinbayar, who had driven for Nykipiflugpuun Noortekoondis in the last season. Others, not so much. Some felt oddly amusing, like a certain Ryden Solow from Beepee, whose only racing experience so far seemed to be driving billy karts and working in food delivery industry. Niko spent a good amount of time reading through all the e-mails and once that was done, he figured that a lot of them seemed promising at the first glance. Thus, a few phone calls later, Niko had booked Hwoarang Racing Circuit for a private test and sent out an invitation to all the drivers who had gotten in contact.

Part 3: A Trial Offer

“You have a letter in your e-mailbox from the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division,” said Priyanca as the junior Findlay walked past her desk alongside Jeremy early on Tuesday morning, “it’s about a trial.”

The duo stopped immediately in their tracks to entertain thoughts about the prospect of a second trial – with the only difference here being the fact that David shall not have to apply to participate in a trial this time.

“Perhaps they’ve heard about my background, no?” David enquired.

Before Jeremy could give him a reasonable answer, Priyanca interjected sharply, looking rather flustered with the amount of work she had on hand. PR is probably not the easiest job to take care of for a prospect driver.

“Can I just say yes?” She asked bluntly.

“Absolutely,” said Jeremy, not giving the young driver a chance to speak before nudging him towards his office room.

“But.. I don’t want them to pick me just because my father is John Henry Findlay! I’m a good racing driver, and I should be picked for that!” David ranted, in a sort of frustration that had every characteristic of a condition that is chronic in every sense. The Findlay surname can be very, very heavy.

“Yes, David. You know that you’re a good racer. I know that you’re a good racer, but the world doesn’t know that, and if we need a bit of help in telling the world about it, why not?” The reassuring tone that emanated from Jeremy’s voice seemed to calm David down for a bit. It is a long road ahead.

The day went on without much to offer, before there were knocks on the door. Priyanca handed in a printout of the official invitation to the Hwoarang Racing circuit for the Kaylan Junior Team in an envelope that also had some other stuff.

“I’ve mailed them that you’ll be there on the 14th. They said they’ll arrange for accommodation, but we’ll also have backups. I’ve got tickets for you and the team in business class. It’s a long flight to Tushlark International Airport from Forsho.”

Priyanca knew they’d say yes. Jeremy and David knew they’d say yes too. A smile was exchanged between the two. On to trials, then!

He shall be available for the test at the time and place of your choosing.

It had been a few days since Ryden had checked his emails.  The previous email had been from his dentist reminding him that it was time for his 6 monthly check up.  Good dental hygiene is important don't you know.

Since then he had decided to become serious about his chosen profession and had polished his helmet every day.  He even phoned his old driving instructor and sought a refresher course in three point turns... that'll be useful if I get spun on the track he decided.

But, now, he thought that enough time had passed to see if he had any sponsors or, heavens to Betsy, a ride.

He clicked open his webmail and scrolled past the multitude of spam which had once again gathered in his inbox.  Scrolling through the diet pills, adults in you area and marital aides, he didn't see anything of note.

'Disappointing' he thought.

Just then another "bing bong. You've got email" notification popped up.  This one seemed a little different.  It was from Beepeean Independent Grocers (BIG).  Ryden thought it must be spam as he normally shops at one of the rival supermarkets.  The email  was entitled "Keen to Sponsor".... it piqued his interest.

Cautiously, and aware the last time he opened an email claiming something good he had to take his laptop to the nerd over in the next town to get the spyware removed, Ryden opened the email.  It seemed genuine enough and BIG were  keen to get in on the WGP2 gravy-train.

The email read:

FAO Ryden Solow,

Dear Mr Solow,

On behalf of Beepeean Independent Grocers, we're interested in sponsoring both you and any team that hires you for the forthcoming WGP2 series.

To this end, we offer you a sponsorship of B$h 2,000,000, and will offer a substantial sponsorship to whichever racing team takes the bait.

For this sponsorship, we will also provide a state of the art racing overalls emblazoned with out logo.  I mean who doesn't want the word BIG emblazoned across their... never mind.

BIG is keen to sponsor up and coming talent and we were very interested in your WhoTube video.  You do need to work on the reversing round the corner  though, as you were a little far out at the end.  But overall you have decent enough skills.

Please call me on 02 6789 0123, to discuss this opportunity further.

Yours,

Maddie Munhey
Community Outreach Officer
Beepeean Independent Grocers.

Then bing bong.... another email landed in his inbox... it was from one of the most prestigious racing teams in all the world, Kaylan Racing...  fumbling over his mouse he read the email with great glee.

Keen to impress, he determined to book a ticket to Togonistan to see if he could get a go in a proper racecar, to help him appeal to the big name teams.

Having booked his flights, Ryden emailed back the Niko Ausage at Kaylan Racing.

This is an email communication sent to all WGP2 licensed drivers and members of the Badai Angin Drivers' Academy.
Image
BADAI ANGIN DRIVERS' ACADEMY

The Badai Angin Drivers' Academy (BAAP) is the junior driver program of Badai Angin, with drivers from various disciplines of motor racing participating. The academy has produced national champions in domestic motorsport categories in open-wheel and stock car racing disciplines. The academy also includes some international drivers who participated in WGP2 last season.

List of Current Drivers:
Open wheel
  1. Alvis Kalvin Lacsamana - WGP3 Filindostan Season 2 Champion
  2. Edward Rousseau (Ethane)
  3. Indra Vartak (Pratapgadh)
Stock car
  1. Mercy Binayas
  2. Shania Soraya
  3. Jomyr Trevor Cumti
Notable former academy drivers
  1. Fiona Sunarya (stock car, FISCAR champion, NSSCRA Multiversal Series race winner and Playoff driver)
  2. Barnabas Mate (Gergary) (open wheel/stock car, NSSCRA Everlong Series race winner and Playoff driver)
  3. Rod Gozum (open wheel/stock car, WGP3 Filindostan champion)

This is an open invitation to all drivers who have a WGP2 license to apply for a spot in the drivers' academy. As part of you being in the academy, the organization will actively try to communicate with other WGP2 teams to sign you to a race seat, especially when our academy does not have any WGP2 team this season. We already have a budding partnership with Aji No Moto AutoRacing Alliance (ANMARA) to have both seats fielded by BAAP academy drivers, and we will be talking to other team principals to accommodate the other drivers that cannot make it in ANMARA's seats.

We will have a testing session scheduled at Jakulta International Raceway to assess your capability and suitability in the academy. This is also your chance to meet several fellow WGP2 prospects, and even possible WGPC drivers. Track details will be provided once the invitation is accepted.

See you in the circuit!

The Valentians - Chapter 1 - More Mails.

Angela checked her emails, to which there was little to no surprise. "Hmm, I mean, I did only asked Fireline, and they might have been busy..." she trailed off, with a glass of lychee soda in her one hand. She gently put the glass down as she began typing more emails, sifting through and looking at more teams, "Well, more is definitely nice!"

From: Angela Stella Tan Fang Ling (angela_fang_ling@valentine_z.gov)
To: Nexus Racing Team
Subject: Interest in signing up in your team.

Good day to you, Nexus! And to the others involved,

I am Angela Stella Tan Fang Ling, and I hail from the world of Valentine Z, one where Adriana Ela Kowalski Lillian is also from. I have been reading through about Nexus Racing Team, along with the experience that Adriana has gotten with respect to the types of vehicles that you have, along with the technology that truly fascinates me. The idea of psionic power, along with any other forces that the Valentians have only the slightest of grasp about, is a topic of fascination! On top of that, Adriana has also talked about and praised the wonders and hospitality of Nexus Academy when she went for that session to you all.

As a result of all of this, I would like to cite my interest in driving for your team, or at least going for the tryouts.

Without a doubt, I understand that you will have reservations about me, particularly when it comes to the face that this is my very first season in the world of Grand Prix. I have a bit of experience from my domestic races, along with the vigors of space exploration and traveling, but I am aware that there is a difference between racing and rocket ships. As a result, I would like to sign up for any of the tryouts that you might be conducting in order to prove myself, as well as for you all to evaluate me to the best of abilities.

I do look forward to hearing back from you all, and thank you for taking the time to read this. ^^

Good day to you, Bitten Heroes! And to the others involved,

I am Angela Stella Tan Fang Ling, and I hail from the world of Valentine Z, one where Adriana Ela Kowalski Lillian is also from. I have been reading through about Bitten Heroes itself, along with the joint team that you and Fireline have conducted for WGPC. For Bitten Heroes itself, I have read that you have a lot of young drivers like myself, along with a dedicated team for WGP2. Adriana has also told me that your team, along with Fireline, are a few of her favorites, and I can definitely see as to why! ^^

As a result of all of this, I would like to cite my interest in driving for your team, or at least going for the tryouts.

Sent again! And then what, Angela thought. More teams to look through and to sign up. Time is, however, running out, so she would need to be fast with these emails and what these other teams are like.

Vasily,

I would be honored to take a tour of the UrGa Motorsports Facilities and participate in a test session with a view to a possible driver seat at UrGa this season. As you know, the Mertagne GP team which I raced for last season was held together by duct tape on the best of days and their plans for this season are unclear.

As i prepared rp for few days, and when i updating about current progress of WGP2, i may miss the update of my driver interest. After i post, i just realized it, seem like i use search with a wrong of spelling, so i get 0 result of Syaqirin. So, if anyone notice my first rp, it may have complete different than current. Sorry for miss of my part.

Canggal Circuit
Sharktail.

As the car crossed the finish line, Zahira stand up and waiting in the pit. The Shade Racing car stop in the pit. As the car stop, Syaqirin comes out of the car. She smiles as she sees Syaqirin catch his breath.

"Looking good. This is the fastest lap you record and even better than last time," said Zahira as she approach Syaqirin.

"Thanks, madam. I don't feel too good this time actually. As later will be the next testing, I hope I don't feel nervous anymore," Syaqirin smiled sourly. He admitted he was not really all out.

"Take it easy. You did well. If you not feeling well, how about doing some medical checkups. Maybe you got muscle aches. It may be worse if you do not properly take care of your body. Not even a single team in WGP2 want a driver who is not well," said Zahira a bit worried after Syaqirin mentioned something like that.

"Don't worry, I'm fine. I have done the medical checkup and I'm also doing it every month. I'm in good condition," replies Syaqirin with a smile.

"Hmm, so are there any reasons for your nervousness?"

"Last time I sent an email to all team requesting a spot in their team. Maybe that fear me a bit."

"Hahaha, already chicken out. It has not even started yet and you already sweating. Don't worry, even without a spot, you can pay to drive. I will be your credit card," said Zahira as her word can be questioned if she is serious or joking.

"Hahaha, seems like that may be an option. As for us unknown drivers, we shouldn't expect to get a spot easily. So money is one of the important things," reply Syaqirin.

"Are you getting any info about trial or test?"

Syaqirin who gets distracted by his phone quickly opens it but it is not important. He focuses back on Zahira's question. "Yeah, i got invitation from Kaylan Racing Team for their driver trial at Hwoarang Racing Circuit in Togonistan. Together with that, i also got reply from Tropicorp VilBev GP2 that they will not do test session. So they request me to send them a resume that include my career highlights and a few more things. That it is,i got two reply. ."

"Ok, I see. Not too bad the offer. So mean you will fly to Togonistan soon?"

"Yeah, i will attend the driver trial." Said Syaqirin.

"Ok, if you say so, i will book ticket for you. As i said i will cover you, so here i will cover you. As for that, i will book your flight to arrive on 14 October, so can have a bit rest before trial." Miss Zahira smile as he said a good news for Syaqirin.

"Thank you. I will continue improve on my skill and go all out. Should we continue?" Syaqirin asked and stand up as he gets ready to go back to the track.

"Go on. This time, try your best to go all out but please watch your..." as Zahira nearly finishes her word, her secretary comes in.

"Miss Zahira, Miss zahira. I found some news online."

"News? About what?" asked Zahira because the info she received was too short.

"As per your request to search if I may witness any news from the team in WGP2, I think I have found one. It's Gajamina Racing Team from neighboring Pemecutan. As from what I confirmed, their team doesn't have any drivers yet. And from the information I received from Pemecutan, I found out that they are looking to test a local driver to fill the spot but still have no candidate for the other driver spot yet,"

"Hmmm, you also mention them to me. As for now, focus on your current schedule. I know some of the people at Gajamina. So, maybe we can try it if you fail to get spot in another team ?"

"I will focus on current. Gajamina team, i already heard and know them before. I not ruling them out as option, but now i want to focus on Kaylan and Vilbev." said Syaqirin with confidence.

"That the spirit," replied Zahira passionately.

" Thank you madam. So now, should we continue for today's test?" Syaqirin takes his helmet and is ready to move out.

"Oh, let's go." Zahira stands up and makes sets up with all crew.

Greetings!

Ms. Purjianto, I have been waiting for driver interest for the past weeks prior to the academy signing a deal with our team to have your drivers drive this season, and I can say I have received drivers' interest to try out for a spot. Given that one of the spots in ANMARA is already allotted for Lacsamana-san, we would want to have an input to influence your decision on the second seat to be offerred.

I understand we have offered the spot officially to Edward Rousseau already, but I am a little bit skeptical that he would do good this season and I would want to evaluate him further by requiring him to attend the private test you are holding. In addition to him, please consider the following list of drivers who expressed interest on driving for ANMARA this season to be also be part of your driver academy:

David Findlay
Ryden Solow
Shalmaneser Kalhu
Batu Tuvshinbayar
Dan Rae
Aaron Deering

Please copy me in all communications in your decisions in sending the test invites so we can do individual background checks and either reinforce the offer to Rousseau or suggest another driver to pair up with AK.

"Holy Smokes!" To say this bomb from Intoreil Palmsti'i of Race Eelandii! VTGP was a shock to Batu would be an understatement. He didn't apply for a WGPC licence this year and yet, here was the team of Lance fucking Carter asking about a simulator run in fucking Turori! He didn't have any intentions of even attempting to go after a WGPC test role but...no that one might be available, I guess it didn't hurt to try? Orange Cow, UrGa, Kaylan, VTGP. What a combo.

Ryden was excited by the prospect of travelling to Togonistan.  Its such a warm and wonderful place. As he was awaiting his flight to Hwoarang he checked his detailed manifest.  A full day of trial racing in a modified Kaylan T160 WGP2-spec car. It was a dream come true.  He was glad to have practiced his emergency stop procedures before getting to the airport.

Awaiting at the terminal for the long flight, he checked his webmail.

"Oh wow!" He exclaimed...Vasily Semyonovich Gatutin of the the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division had emailed inviting Ryden for both a guided tour and not one, not two, but three test sessions at their facilities in Myrilsk.

He delightedly tapped out a quick email to Gatutin. In which he expressed his excitement at the prospect of three test sessions and said he'd be there soon.

Everything seemed to be going so well.

Across the tannoy came an announcment that the flight to Hwoarang was now boarding.  Ryden closes up his laptop and boarded the plane, ready for the long flight to Togonistan.

"ANMARA just gave an invitation," Jamie started, "they want you to be part of Badai Angin Drivers' Academy."

"Academy?" Aaron was confused about the idea.

"I think they just want to see if you can drive by ANMARA's standards."

"Well, we even got to be here in Togonistan. I am just so excited to be trying out different systems of racing teams. Tomorrow, I'll get to try to test driving Kaylan's WGP2 car. No word from UrGa yet when the tour will happen?"

"Nothing yet," Jamie replied, "let's hope that it won't overlap with our schedules with Viska."

"Tell ANMARA we're doing it as long as we're clear with Viska over scheduling."

"Sure thing."

Now, Aaron is just curious. "Do you think all racing teams talk within themselves so that everyone won't have problems in their schedules?"

The former prime minister of Eraman, Tun Sengalang Petara was accompanied by only his bodyguards during his trip to Pemecutan. He has been out of power for almost a year after decided not to re-contest in the last general election but being the younger brother of the Maharaja and the chairman of Petara Group, the biggest conglomerate in Eraman, he remained the most influential person in the country. The visit to Pemecutan though was not made in the government's capacity, Tun Sengalang Petara has retired completely from active politics and holds no position in the government. The visit to Pemecutan this time was purely business. Tun Sengalang Petara was there as the chairman of Petara Group.

Tun Sengalang Petara went straight to the headquarters of Gajamina Group as soon as he touched down in Pemecutan. There was no official meeting. In fact, even Ngurah Bagus Satwika, the chairman of Gajamina Group was totally not expecting the sudden visit. But nevertheless, he was happy to take some time off from his busy schedule to entertain his old friend. It was just Tun Sengalang Petara and Ngurah Bagus Satwika in the office room of the chairman of Gajamina Group at the top floor of the Gajamina Tower in Ubung. They talk and talk over an hour before Ngurah Bagus Satwika finally asked about the main agenda of the visit.

"By the way, to what do I owe this visit?" asked Ngurah Bagus Satwika finally getting the conversations on track after an hour of catching up, small talks, and laughter.

"Actually, I would like to bring your attention to one of your ventures, the Gajamina Racing Team. I have received an official letter, I believe from one of your subordinates regarding sponsorships. We have had a long relationship, you know I am crazy on huge crazy projects like this and will put my money on it. But we must create a win-win situation," said Tun Sengalang Petara.

"Yes, I agree with you completely. A win-win situation is a must in all business dealings," replied Ngurah Bagus Satwika.

"But I don't see a win-win situation right now," said Tun Sengalang Petara.

"What do you mean?" asked Ngurah Bagus Satwika back who don't quite get what Tun Sengalang Petara wants to say.

"Any sponsorship from Petara Group that involves a huge amount of money like this has to be under our flagship, the Petara Oil. But Gajamina Racing Team has signed a deal with MG Oil before the letter to Petara Group was even sent out. You have to choose between Petara Oil or MG Oil, it can't be both,"

"Alright. I'm not directly involved with Gajamina Racing Team. Irfan Rayadi is responsible for that. We have put him in charge of the racing team. But to be honest, I was the one who instruct Irfan to reach out to you because who else comes to mind when talking about as you said "huge crazy project" like this. And when I instructed Irfan to do that, it was Petara Air or Petara Hotels & Resorts that came to mind, not Petara Oil,"

"But they are not as big as Petara Oil. You need to do something about the MG Oil deal,"

"Unfortunately, the contract with MG Oil has been signed. There is nothing we can do on that front now. We received a huge amount of sponsorship from them with the backing of the government of Pemecutan. It's a deal we can't afford to reject,"

"It's very hard for us to seal this deal with Petara Oil not in the picture. This is a huge sum of money we are talking about. I don't think my people at Petara Air or Petara Hotels & Resorts would agree to this. The coverage of WGP2 is not that huge back home,"

"I'm sure the coverage that it gets in Pemecutan is lucrative enough. After all, both Petara Air and Petara Hotels & Resorts have operations in Pemecutan,"

"Petara Air is a low-budget airline. People who watch WGP2 don't travel with low-budget airlines. As for Petara Hotels & Resorts, we have 1 resort in Pemecutan. The return will not be enough,"

"I think it would be great if we can have Irfan here with us to talk about this. He is more well-versed on this. Why don't we schedule an official meeting soon?"

"You know what? I have an idea. I know how we can solve the coverage problem in Eraman. An Eramanian driving for Gajamina in the WGP2. What do you think?"

"Interesting. I'll talk to Irfan about this. Do you have anyone in mind?"

"Vinod's son."

"Vinod's son? Can he race?"

"Can he race you asked? He is the champion of Eraman Championship for 4 years in a row,"

"Champion of Eraman Championship? Wow, how can Vinod raise a kid like that? Does he even have time for the poor boy," said Ngurah Bagus Satwika as the two burst into laughter.

The conversation then turns to about Vinod, their old friend, the chairman of Pillai Group, and the 4th richest person in Eraman before they talk and talk again for hours about other things.

The opportunities were arriving for Dan Rae.

He had put his name out there, telling anyone that would listen that he wanted to drive in WGP2. Maybe the backing from Barton helped, but it seemed there were already teams interested in his ability. All were established in WGP2: UrGa and Kaylan had raced last season, and while ANMARA were a new name, they were backed by Badai Angin, another well-established name in the sport. He would get in touch with them all. At least then, he would be on his way towards a drive.

Kaylan Prospect Program Driver Trials
Hwoarang Racing Circuit
Hwoarang, Togonistan

With the midday sun high up in the sky and birds singing in the background, Hwoarang Racing Circuit seemed completely empty at the first glance. Just a little less than a week ago, the upcoming season's WGPC teams had run their cars around that very circuit during their first official pre-season test. The lively atmosphere with grandstands full of people, cars speeding around the track and air full of gasoline fumes back then was a huge contrast to the idyllic morning atmosphere surrounding the place now. However, little did the birds and people walking past the closed gates know about the fact that in just a few hours, the circuit would come to life once again.

As the clock hit twelve, the gates opened and two trailers, accompanied by a number of support cars, entered the paddock area. Group of mechanics dressed in Kaylan's signature green and orange coloured teamwear started unloading their equipment and preparing the cars for afternoon laying ahead of them. Roughly half an hour later, another car entered the paddock and parked in front of an empty pit garage. Having opened the door, Niko Ausage stepped out along with Timoteo Lemaota, Domerton Motorsports team principal. The two men greeted the group of mechanics and inspected the preparations that were being undertaken.

With another hour passing, more people started flowing into the paddock. One of the team members had taken in a position at the gates to greet the arriving drivers and the people accompanying them, mark down their names and guide them to take their seats in the VIP lounge situated right above the row of pit garages. With a large glass wall on one side, drivers had a good view at the circuit as they were sitting in the lounge, waiting for what was about to happen next. After another hour of waiting, all the drivers who had promised to show had made their way to the lounge. ''Niko, they're all here!'' a team member said as he walked into the pit garage. Having given a quick nod in response, Niko changed the last few words with the mechanics before moving on to make his way upstairs and step into the lounge that, by now, had been filled by the invited drivers, their agents, some of Kaylan's or Domerton's own staff and all the other people that had any business to be present during the trials for one reason or another. Niko took a moment to scan the room with his eyes. Some people were chatting with each other, while others were sitting on their own and quietly ate the snacks that had been put on the table. Niko coughed his throat clear, put his hands up in the air and stated with a loud and clear, almost military-like voice: ''Ladies, gentlemen... may I have your attention, please?'' Suddenly, the room went quiet and all eyes went on him.

''Welcome to Hwoarang Racing Circuit. For those of you who might not know me yet, allow me to give you a quick introduction. My name is Niko Ausage, i'm the Head of Kaylan Prospect Program and the organizer of this trial day here today,'' he made a brief pause and looked around before continuing, ''First of all, let's make a few rules clear. Access to the garage area underneath us will only be granted to drivers participating in the trials and the Kaylan or Domerton team staff. Everyone else can keep track of the test either from here or, if you would like to get a closer look at the cars going around the circuit, you are free to inspect from the grandstands outside. The TV screen on the wall here will also provide live timing information for each of the test runs. On my right hand side, you can see the bar area that serves both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as various snacks on the house. However, any drivers seen consuming alcohol before their turn to drive will be removed from the trials. Smoking in here is allowed, as long as you properly use the ashtrays. If you have any questions, feel free to approach any of our team staff in here and i'm sure they can help you.''

Niko made another pause. ''Now, I will introduce you the format we will be running today. All drivers will get two hours with a Kaylan T160 WGP2 car. These very cars have participated in the third season of World Grand Prix 2 and were driven by Barnabas Mate and Isaia Fanene. While the cars themselves are a few seasons old, they have been modified to run Kaylan's newest Kaieke 3 WGP2 engine, meaning that the experience you get behind the wheel will be very close to a modern WGP2 machine. Two cars will be driving on the circuit at the same time, meaning that two drivers will be having their 2-hour stint simultaneously. During their two-hour stint, we will evaluate the driver's abilities when it comes to communicating with the team, managing their tyres, giving feedback on the car's settings, adapting to the car and, of course, the lap times they drive. In short, two cars and two drivers at a time, show us what you can do!'' Niko took a clipboard from another team member and started assigning cars to the drivers: ''First driver to head out will be...'' Niko looked around and his eyes landed on Batu Tüvshinbayar. Of course, Batu had also attended the trials Kaylan had run during their last WGP2 season. While the trials back then were run by Xander instead of himself, Niko had still been present and inspecting. The Mongol's face was hard to forget and Niko had immediately recognized him as soon as he had entered the room. ''Ah, perfect! A driver with prior WGP2 experience already. Batu, why don't you head out first and show the rookies how it's done?'' Niko gave Batu a friendly smile (even though it was arguably one that could've also been wrongly interpreted as mocking) and pat him on the shoulder, ''and, Darian, you too. Just so that everyone can get an idea of how a WGP2 car goes around the track in the hands of already experienced drivers.'' With the first driver pairing of Batu and Darian (even though the latter was already very much a Kaylan driver and was there just to tag along rather than compete with others) being sent out of the room to head down to the garage and start preparing themselves, Niko carried on: ''second drivers to head out on the track will be Ahmad Syaqirin Rahman in car 1 and David Findlay in car 2, your stint is scheduled to start at 4 pm. They will be followed by Daniel Rae in car 1 and Shalmaneser Kalhu in car 2 at 6 pm. The final pairing, hitting the track at 8 pm, will be Aaron Deering in car 1 and Ryden Solow in car 2.'' Niko wrote down all the pairings and the time their test runs start. ''So, drivers, the clock is on the wall. Remember the time when your turn comes and once it arrives, head down to the garage. In the meantime, enjoy yourselves. And as I said, anything you need, you are free to ask any of the team staff.''

Hours passed, drivers had their time in the car. The overall scenario for each driver was quite straightforward. First, getting themselves seated into the car. Then, a crash course about T160's handling and control systems, followed by a small number of laps to get the first taste of the car before moving on to work on car setups. Eventually, after a number of laps, it was time for the fast lap attempts, something what Hwoarang was the perfect track for. After a grand total of 8 hours, the last driver pairing of Aaron Deering and Ryden Solow had finished their stint and the fastest lap of each driver was displayed on the timing screens.

1 Batu Tüvshinbayar 1:20.552
2 Ahmad Syaqirin Rahman 1:20.714
3 Daniel Rae 1:21.026
4 Darian Vilau 1:21.118
5 David Findlay 1:21.365
6 Shalmaneser Kalhu 1:21.405
7 Aaron Deering 1:21.468
8 Ryden Solow 1:21.860

By the time the trials ended, the sun had already set and trackside lights had been turned on. With all the drivers gathered to the lounge for one last time, engineers made a quick overview of the day after which, Niko thanked all the drivers that had participated. ''With that, we wrap up for tonight. We have managed to gather a fair amount of information about your driving style, your strengths, your weaknesses. The overall picture, however, was fairly positive for all of you. Some of you might need more time to adapt to WGP2-level cars, but you all have the potential to make it far with some work involved. With that in mind, I wish you all a good evening and we will get in touch with you about our decision in the upcoming days.''

Topic: Kaylan Prospect Program Offer

Greetings

First of all, we would like to thank Mr. David Findlay for participating in our trials. Having analysed Mr. Findlay's skillset as a driver based on his performance during the trials, we believe that he would make a good addition to our program. While David didn't drive the fastest lap times during the session, he showed great potential with his conserved driving style and with some time, he is definitely able to adapt to the WGP2 machinery. Therefore, we would like to formally offer David Findlay a spot in Kaylan Prospect Program as well as a race seat in Kaylan Junior Team by Domerton for the upcoming season of WGP2. Attached to this message is a draft of our proposed contract. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Niko Ausage
Kaylan Racing Team Scouting Department

Niko rubbed his hands together after hitting the send button. Sure, he could've sent an offer to Ahmad Rahman, Daniel Rae or even the experienced Batu Tüvshinbayar, all of whom had been the top three drivers in trials. However, there was something about Findlay that had lit the lightbulb inside Niko's head. Maybe it was just his instinct, but after having analysed the data they got from testing, it just felt like at this moment in time, David would be the most stable choice to go with. The circuit at Hwoarang was always favouring aggressive drivers and while aggression was by no means a bad thing, for now he believed to be better off betting on a driver with more conserved driving style. Of course, should David deny their offer, the negotiations would be back on table.

This event/conversation happen in October 15

Irfan Rayadi is seating leisurely in his office. He scan the email that fill the inbox. He is searching for potential driver. While on the television hanging in the wall in front of him, a news coverage on UTV channel which is airing about the signing of Pande Putu Raka Ganesha as one of Gajamina driver for WGP2. Irfan smile lightly hearing about the news. He is very confident in signing Raka Ganesha. The fact that he is already part of the team from IOWCC competition is making Irfan give the trust to him.

As he scan the inbox, he stumble on several emails. One from Aaron Deering and one from Ahmad Syaqirin Rahman. He is glad that other drivers have an interest to join Gajamina as they are a new competitor in the competition.

"Hope I'm not late to reply these messages. I should've pay more attention to the email," murmur Irfan Rayadi.

For the past days, he was focusing on the engineering team. Signing a deal with The Duke for their engine and extend their contract for tyre with Gajamina Tyre. Although the official still haven't release any detail of the engine and tyre. But both suppliers have agreed to make their product match the standard of WGP2 officials. He click the reply button and start typing for both interested drivers. All in his mind is just that he is not too late to reply because he is also not update yet with the drivers sign up.

"And send. One more email. Oh wait, there's another email. Hhmm. Let me see," whisper Irfan. He check the emails. These are from Ryden Sollow and Shalmaneser Kalhu.
"Silly me to not paying any attention about these," Irfan is mad to himself.

"And send. Huft. Hope there's no more left behind," murmur Irfan.

Suddenly a phone ringing makes him alert. It is his secretary. She inform that Ngurah Bagus Satwika, Gajamina Group's Chairman is on the line. He think for a while. What's the occasion? It is a rare things for Satwika to contact him. But in the end, he agree to receive the call.

"Good morning, Sir," greet Irfan politely.
"Yes, morning too Mr. Rayadi. How are you today? Hope I'm not bothering you this early morning," greet Satwika on the other line.
"Oh. No Sir. Not at all. Is there anything that you need, Sir?" ask Irfan boldly.
"Hahaha. You are very smart," praise Satwika. "I've seen the news about the driver signing. Raka Ganesha?"
"Yes, Sir. We have sign him for the upcoming WGP2 series. He have been with us previously as a test driver. And it is a good move I think to give him a chance this time," explain Irfan.
"I see. But what about the other driver? Have you make your selection?" ask Satwika.
"Not yet, Sir. But I just send invitation email to several drivers that have interest in joining our team. I hope one of them agree for a test that I will held tomorrow," answer Irfan.
"Hhmm. I see," comment Satwika with a disappoint tone.
"Is there anything you have in mind, Sir?" ask Irfan carefully.
"You are indeed smart Irfan," comment Satwika. Irfan stay silent. "As I realize that we have a deal with Petara Group for sponsoring the racing team which is from Petara Air and Petara Hotel & Resorts."
"Yes, that's true, Sir. We are already sign sponsor contracts with several companies. MG Oil, Tabuh Mas, Petara Air, Petara Hotel & Resorts and Campuhan Cruise," explain Irfan. He is still not understand where this conversation heading.
"That's good. But there's one issue there," reveal Satwika.
"Issue?" Irfan seems confused.
"Tun Sengalang Petara, the head of Petara Group is coming to me and ask to change the sponsoring to Petara Oil. But we have to cut the contract with MG Oil."
"But we can't do that, Sir. That would make our relation with MG Oil worsen," cut Irfan.
"I know. I know. That's not the real issue," reply Satwika. Irfan get more confused. "I'm also rejecting his proposal about the sponsor change. But he want something else in return. He wants one of Eramanian race driver to be Gajamina's driver," add Satwika.
Irfan stun by the revelation. He can't believe what's the chairman say. "But Sir, I already invite the drivers who have interest with us. It would be very unprofessional for us to cancel the test drive suddenly," Irfan give an excuse.
"Hhmm. I understand. Can you just squish the Eramanian driver in the test drive? And no matter the result, in the end he will be the chosen one. The Eramanian driver," ask Satwika.
Sir, I....," Irfan can't continue his words.
"I know it would be hard on you. Tun is also my friend and I know how ambitious he is. I just hope you can cooperate so nothing wrong happen in the future," advice Satwika.
I understand, Sir," reply Irfan.
"Thank you, Mr. Rayadi. I'm very appreciate you for everything," praise Satwika.
"It's no need, Sir. But who is this Eramanian driver name?" ask Irfan.
"Nikhil Pillai," answer Satwika.
"Alright, Sir. I'll arrange everything," say Irfan.
"Thank you, Mr. Rayadi."

Irfan exhale deeply after the long conversation with Ngurah Bagus Satwika. His head spinning around. He can't believe that one day he will be in this situation. He inhale once again before dialing the phone.

"Mr. Katamso? Hello. I already cc you the email for driver test race in Bongkasa for tomorrow. Can you arrange that? And add one spot for Nikhil Pillai. He is a new addition. Direct order from Mr. Satwika. Thank you."

Irfan put the phone down. He lean back on his chair and take another deep breathe. He can only hope that his choice is getting a good result for the team.

Ryden was delighted as he arrived at the Hwoarang Racing Circuit.  Anticipation filled the air, that and the smell of petrol slowly evaporating on wet tarmac.

He was a little apprehensive, but was greeted by a nice assistant who lead him to a well appointed lounge.  The velour sofas looked nice.  The lounge was filled with a variety of people some looked like drivers, other seemed to be doing all sorts paperwork, making important phone calls.  There was even someone peeling grapes for someone who Ryden assumed was an important driver. Ryden felt a bit silly being on his own, instead of having an entourage.  He suddenly realised he was under-prepared.  Still he settled into a chair beside some cheese and crackers and he began to make himself a small snack.  As he was about to take his first bite, he looked up to see one of others staring at him.  Feeling a bit self-conscious, he placed the cracker down on a plate and sheepishly pushed it way.  As he did, Niko Ausage walked into the room, he was a man of distinction with enough personality to fill two of these lounges.

Mr Ausage provided details of what was going to happen.  He was very matter of fact. 'A seasoned professional', Ryden thought to himself.  When Mr Ausage said that Ryden would get to trial in the car and would be the last one out, a large smile spreads across Ryden's face, which he couldn't hide.

Ryden watched each of the other racers fly round the track.  He listened attentively to the mechanics go through the key components of the T160 racing car.

Finally, after what felt like both an eternity and only a few moments, he was called forward.  He was about to do his fast flying lap.  This would determine his ranking against the other seven racers, including Aaron Deerling who'd also be out on the lap.

He settled himself as he headed down the start-finishh straight.  He gulped as he crossed the line to start his flying lap, and didn't breathe again until he flung himself into the left hander of turn 1.

This was the first time he'd really put his pedal to the metal and he was gripping the steering wheel hard.  Holding on for dear life.  The hairpins of turns 5 and 6, threw him from side to side, as he tried to hold on.

He got a little sideways coming out of the tight left hander at turn eight, and thought he may spin off, so lifted off the accelerator slightly. The forgiving T160 straightened up, and once again squeezed the pedal.  He tried to focus hard, the momentary lapse had thrown him slightly.

Along the long straight between turns 9 and 10, Ryden tried to catch up following his earlier error.  The engine growled behind him.  He was exhilarated, this was nothing like the billy carts. He finished with the two right handers and then squeezed the accelerator again down the home straight and over the line.

The lap had taken only an instant,  but Ryden let out a yelp of excitement.

Ryden returned to the pits, where he saw the other racers, they all seemed confident that they had performed well.  Ryden was just hoping his mistake at turn eight didn't cost him too much time and wouldn't be so far behind the others.  The timing screen flicked up the times.  Batu Tüvshinbayar smiled as they saw their name at the top.  It wasn't unexpected that Rydens name propped up the table, but the beamed as he saw the time. He was only 0.4 of a second behind Aaron Deering.  Ryden grinned from ear to ear,it was much closer to the group than he expected.

After the race, Ryden all the other racers gathered together in the same business lounge, Mr Ausage thanked all the drivers and said very kind words.  Ryden was thankful for the opportunity although he didn't expect an offer he'd take the great experience  he gained and try even harder at the next trials.

Packing his back preparing to leave Togonistan and to prepare for the next trial, he checked his email and noticed an email from the Pemecutan Gajamina racing team, inviting Ryden to a trial at the track in Bongkasa.  Ryden quickly typed up an acceptance email and booked his ticket to Pemecutan, excited about his next adventure.

Jamie heads outside as her phone is ringing, with a call coming from Logan.

"How is everything?" Logan asked.

"It just started here," Jamie replied. "Two WGP2 regulars are driving now. Aaron will be driving by 8 PM."

"Oh," Logan thought loud, "so you'd probably finish late. But be back at the airport by 11 PM, you're flying to Bongkasa. Gajamina sent an invitation, and I told them Aaron's going to their test drive. The hook is that it's going to be tomorrow. I just forgot to tell you earlier because I had a meeting. You better tell Aaron."

"Sure thing, boss," Jamie said. That's the only reply Logan was waiting for coming from Jamie before he hung up.

"I thought we were going to concentrate on experienced drivers for this season?"

Jill Franklin sat across the desk from Mike Lambert in his office at the PRL, as they discussed the state of driver negotiations.
"We are, but at the moment I'd like to see some people behind a wheel."

They'd only heard back from Batu Tuvshinbayar in regards to a test day, while Parveen Kulkani had already signed for EHF; they'd also received a few unsolicited introductory feelers from drivers looking to get in on the ground floor, and Lambert didn't think there was any harm in having a couple of them in, if only to have a run on the 'Peril' track.

Lambert looked through his inbox and picked out the inquiries he was most impressed with.

Dealing with success

Sullivan Joyner was expected to be Bollonich’s next big racing star. He had clearly shown immense talent in winning the Bollonischian Championship and was rightfully receiving attention. He however knew that this attention doesn’t last, racing will move on from him to the next big talent if he cannot make it big. And he had to make it big, that was his dream. Being out of contract was difficult, Joyner’s future was uncertain. He had no clue what to do, after all it was his dad who got him that Sylvestre Racing Junior seat. Maybe his dad would do it again.

“Sully, it looks like we have quite a few options on our hands. Nexus, Orange Cow, Fireline and Villsorma are all brilliant teams from well established nations in the world of motorsports. They can provide you with competitive cars.”

“Kaylan’s seat looks interesting, they just won the WGP2 last season. And going into their junior team and putting up some good performances could land we a WGPC seat next season.”

“Yes. I think it’s also important we consider making some moves right now as the window of opportunity is closing.”

Sullivan replied to his father and then put on his jacket as he was heading out to his favourite pub to watch the Bollonischian national team in World Cup Qualifying. He had always loved football and despite his main focus and his career being built around racing he also kept updated with the happenings in the football world. As soon as he got out of his parents’ house he was suddenly approached by a journalist.
Sullivan was slightly taken aback but he liked this new found attention he was receiving. Attention that had made him a national celebrity due to him winning the Bollonischian Grand Prix Championship. The journalist immediately went forward to ask his questions.

“Sullivan, which team are you looking to go to? Your prospects look pretty good. Do you think you’ll be able to secure a seat for next season?”

“I am very confident I’ll be able to secure a seat in Tier 2 of WGPC.”

Sullivan walked off as he continued to head towards the pub. Looking at his phone, he checked whether the game had started. This is when a news article caught his attention, the article read, "Findlay signs for Kaylan". Joyner quickly realised the ramifications of this as he understood that the Kaylan seats were now all taken up. He would have to look elsewhere. This came as a mighty shock for him, with the market already in motion he started wondering whether he was too late. As his mind was on racing, he reached the pub where he was greeted by three friends all of whom went in together and started chatting like long lost friends. The thoughts about his racing seat however didn’t escape his mind and no amount of alcohol helped.

Subject: Query regarding a Racing Seat at your team

Greetings! This is Joey Bort, the agent of Sullivan Joyner. My client would like to express his interest in signing and racing for your team. My client is aware that he may need to prove his worth on the racetrack in tests, and is ready to do so.

My client is among some of the most successful drivers in Bollonich, having won the Bollonischian WGP3 Championship in his rookie season. Aged 21, he is a fabulous young driver. My client despite being gifted on the race track also carries a number of sponsorships with him. Having done a very rare thing for any Bollonischian driver, the hype around my client is real. Azzura, one of the biggest car manufacturers and among the engine suppliers in the Bollonischian Championship recently signed my client on for a ludicrous sponsorship deal. Such other deals makes my client a better investment compared to others on the grid as someone who can bring a good amount of money to any team and is also gifted on the track.

We hope to hear from you soon, and my client looks forward to racing for your team.

Sincerely,
Joey Bort (Agent of Sullivan Joyner)
