Hey, uh... unrelated to anything, but, Violet, how do you have an account, but, not a nation?

Very minor whine, but when we revamped the flags last time the default flag's red went from a very bright aggressive red to a much cooler red. Now it seems to me the default flag is very hard on the eyes again. Just curious if we could tone that red down a bit since we all have to see it so much.

It might be possible, but a lot of trickery would be required. The ripple image is also very un-SVG-like and will not convert well.

I think last time the flags got smooshed into the limited RGB colorspace (16-235), mostly by accident, whereas now they're back in full RGB (0-255). National flags have a very particular set of colors, so I do think they should be objectively correct, as opposed to artistically muted. But I believe you can usually configure colorspace in your monitor, operating system, and/or browser, so if in general you find colors too strong, you can change a setting. On my system, for example, default Firefox operates in limited RGB colorspace while Chrome displays full RGB.

Why are the colours of Default.svg not identical to the colours of Default.png? Or is this to do with what [v] said about the colour range desmooshing?

I also confirmed that they're served over the network with gzip / brotli compression, when your browser supports it, so in terms of network bandwidth they arrive at somewhere around 30% of this size. So that's pretty great.

Thank you SO much! <---genuine applause by the way, this is not a sarcastic one at all despite it looking like that for me!
Just made the proper shift to SVG, and my flag is looking so crisp now! I especially like how the segmented circle that has those slanted bits came out, that part used to be from a separate PNG, but I found a way to remake it in the program I used to make this flag.

I'm willing to take a stab at converting the ripple PNG. Is there a place where I can get it?

Nice update. This'll be good for season 3 of cards - nations with default flags won't have blurry and pixelated art anymore. And I'm liking the sharp look of my own flag now that I've reuploaded it in svg.

Hello, restored nations that previously had a custom flag continue to fallback to the original JPEG version.

Source: https://www.nationstates.net/nation=notepad

Also, in the preset flags menu, Swaziland is now called Eswatini.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this (please tell me if its not) but I noticed that in the formatting got distorted in my puppets factbook for Anatoliyanskiyan Colony 33, just around the time of this change. It appears that the 33 is not underlined when you hover over it, and that may be causing this issue, but im not sure. The flag also appears to be smaller than the other flag sizes, but that could be normal. Just thought it could be something related to the switch to SVGs.

So, I'll be frank I've never used svg image before; I mostly stick to .pngs and the occassional .dds image. How long should it take to upload one? I tried converting my current .png to an .svg but it keeps showing a swirling loading icon after I hit the upload button. It shows up fine in the preview though. Is that just because of the way the converter I used edited the code or something? I'm honestly not sure if I should just switch back to the .png or just wait a little longer.

I have a request. Can the ex-nation flag also be changed to a quality SVG image?
It's now this tiny tiny PNG image with blurry text when it's used on a card: https://www.nationstates.net/images/car ... nation.png

Are you referring to the way the underline doesn't pass through descenders, like this? ? Browsers have been generally migrating to this style over the years.

This does seem to be a formatting bug, as the flags are permitted to be very wide if they're not tall.

Nice and excellent stuff! I've kind of waited for this in a while but wasn't sure when, and wish I knew this slightly earlier but it's nice to know!

Since I have the .svg in my overview factbook, I've used that as my flag. It works wonders so far, and many thanks for this.

You may use the flag, since it is a mere vectorisation of an existing NationStates design.

EDIT: I just revised the flag to shave off another kilobyte off the file size. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Since I have begun using an .svg file for my national flag, I have noticed that the search suggestions when logging into the website and on the 'World' page only display my nation's name and no longer my nation's name plus the national flag. Below is an image of what I am mentioning.

raster images can't be converted automatically to proper vector images. automated tools will either just embed the png and fundamentally change nothing or create enormous sets of multiple traces. you need to actually trace or otherwise recreate the raster image in svg format if you want a small file.
