[ACCEPTED][CONTEST] God Save The Queens

Postby Daarwyrth » Wed Oct 13, 2021 7:26 am

So, this issue draft is inspired by the recent news that the Dutch Prime Minister voiced his support of the Crown Princess marrying someone of the same sex, should she want to. I wrote another draft on this subject in the past, but I think a different approach to the topic like in this draft would work better. Comments and feedback are welcome as always!

CURRENT DRAFT:
[Title] God Save The Queens

[Validity] Has Monarchy, has Marriage Equality

[Description] This week's international media circus saw the crown prince of Skandilund steal the show, after he had been caught sharing an intimate moment with another man in the palace gardens, evoking both ire and praise from the denizens of @@REGION@@. Yet in the midst of the media fever, your nation's tabloids managed to turn all eyes on @@NAME@@'s heir apparent by asking what response would be evoked domestically, if the royal family’s most prized scion married someone of the same sex.

[Option 1] "Are we not a nation where anyone, even a royal, is free to marry who they fancy?" notes openly homosexual TV host @@RANDOMMALENAME@@ on live air, his gaze continuously flickering to the iced coffee left unattended on the studio desk, his hand edging ever closer to it. "Our future sovereign is as much entitled to the law on same sex marriages as any other @@DEMONYMPLURAL@@. And we currently have someone second in line to the throne, do we not? Let them be happy about the order in which they were born for once!"

[Effect 1] younger siblings are among the nation's most fervent LGBTQ supporters these days

[Option 2] "Let's take it a step further," says interviewee @@RANDOMNAME@@ while trying to keep track of @@HIS@@ cabal of adoptees at a pro-LGBT rally. "If we truly want the royals to be seen as any other @@DEMONYM@@, we must allow adopted children into the line of succession! It was a common practice among the cultures of old, like with the Romulan Imperators. I don't see why we couldn't bring it back to give any future monarch options if need be! And as a side bonus, we'll finally get to acquaint the royals with a little genetic diversification..."

[Effect 2] @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ royals love to remind their siblings who was adopted first

[Option 3] "Surely you would not want to risk a Bigtopian orphan sitting on the throne?" enunciates the notoriously traditionalist mayor of @@CAPITAL@@ John Borison to the TV host, his vividly blonde toupée sticking out eccentrically just like his personality. "The foreign fiends have already thieved all of our jobs, and those fruity folks have taken over marriages, now they're reaching for our crown jewels as well? I say enough! We must keep the royal marriages traditional and native: a man and a woman, and a true @@DEMONYM@@ with a true @@DEMONYM@@. Say, I happen to have a fine, wholly @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ sibling available..."

[Effect 3] the royals are keeping it straight for the state

[Option 4] "The fairytale of 'finding true love' is meant for the common folk, not individuals of our stature," huffs a senior member of the royal family. "A royal should marry someone out of duty to family and state, someone with connections to other royal houses or notable families. I propose any matters of matrimony be arranged by our family alone, for the good of the realm. It has reached my ear that Althaniq has a suitable candidate for our prized scion, one whose beauty and grace supposedly caused dozens of suitors to duel to the death. Surely, its veracity is unquestionable!"

[Effect 4] the royal family knows like no other that beauty really is in the eye of the beholder

I wanted to keep it in the same style as the speaker, but the line can be altered to be "the royals are keeping it straight for the state" if need be :)

Just wanted to say that an issue like this is long overdue, and some love for the monarchies (of which Terrabod is not one) is always good.

At the moment, your description is sort of distanced from the issue - the topic comes up because a nameless relation wrote a book that discussed the possibility of a member of the royal family wanting a same-sex relationship some time in the future, correct? I'd rather see a reason for the tabloids to really turn this into a media circus today - perhaps an heir from another nation (one of the existing ones, or one of your own creation) was seen holding hands or making out with a [same sex partner], which has led to much supportive and derisive media coverage in @@NAME@@ - plenty of which is looking inwards at your own system (a "would our leader be chill with that?" question).

Oh, and as a personal preference, I don't like the "feather boa" running joke. I think it would be nice to see some different types of gay people in issues, but obviously that's a matter of personal taste.

Interesting draft, definitely a viable issue in here.

That would be the sixth one in my collection, yaay :) but the badges shouldn't be why you want to write drafts, the best reason to draft is because you simply like writing, or want to improve that skill. Treat the badges as a nice side bonus ;)

Thank you all for the feedback so far c: I'll work on a new draft later today!

Alright, new draft is up and I worked your commentary into the text! The premise has been changed along the lines that you suggested (considering that Skandilund is meant to be Scandinavia I thought it would be cool to expand the lore of it a bit that by suggesting that they have a monarchy, considering Norway, Denmark and Sweden do too), and I also changed the boa trope to an iced coffee, which hopefully works better! :)

Premise looks really good, though I think it could go down smoother - reading it aloud, some parts sound a bit clunky. I can offer more specific pointers another time (can't right now, sorry) if need be. Skandilund was definitely a smart choice!

Uh, I know I asked for it, but I don't get the iced coffee thing. Is that a well-known "gay thing"? I guess here we have the pumpkin spice latte thing, but that's more about basic white girls. Anyway, my point wasn't specific to feather boas, it was about the hyperfemininity of most gay people represented in issues. There's an issue implying the gay character wants to wear a dress and that goes in the same book for me. I wouldn't really mind if it wasn't that almost every single gay man that's ever appeared in an issue is reduced to that one single character trait. We're in cliché territory now - and that's not considering the wider issue of promoting one overtaxed view of what a gay man can be like... that's no one's fault in particular, but as writers we have the power to show something different.

But as I said before, that kind of thing is a matter of my personal taste and what I'd like to see; what goes into your issue is always up to you. Some people like the boa joke and others don't, it's as simple as that.

Yeah, the premise could definitely be cleaned up a bit more, so I'll attend to that in the next draft, thanks! :)

I totally get where you're coming from. It was the easy way out to simply go for the existing comedic trope about the boa, yet what you say makes a lot of sense. Which is why I went for the iced coffee, as it's been a running meme that gays love iced coffee (guilty as charged) and I don't think I saw it included in the issue base earlier. The trope itself isn't meant to stereotype of course, it's more of a reference to the running joke :)

Of course! But I admit I simply found it a bit lazy about myself that I went for an existing trope rather than try and come up with something new myself, so it was motivational c:

Is there potential for another issue here, one where gay men are complaining that the media stereotypes them? Perhaps with the first speaker being something along the lines of a survival expert who used to be a senior NCO in the special forces?
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

There might indeed be an idea in that, yes absolutely! If you have the inspiration for such an issue draft, I'd say go for it! c:

Personally, I'd love to see the feather boa trope being subverted in this way! You should definitely give it a go!

I'll think further about this, but when I finish my currently-under-work 'Birdman of Pelicanz' issue draft I'd really like to concentrate on the G.A. -- for which I have at least four proposals on my 'To Do' list -- for a while instead... and I'm not sure that I could write an option that opposes this protest without falling even further into stereotypes. So, if either of you two wants to write it instead I certainly won't complain.
Thought: the protesters for whom this ex-(sergeant-major?) is speaking might use the acronym 'GRIM', standing for 'Gays Really Irritated Media-wise', and this might be used in the issue's title... 'GRIM-ly Gay', perhaps?

So, if either of you two wants to write it instead I certainly won't complain.

Kind of you to offer, but like you I have a "to do" list - except mine's for issue-writing.

I've started a new thread for that other idea.

As this thread's starter, Daarwyrth could ask the Mods to move the last four posts out from here... and as that thread's starter I'm fine with the Mods placing them there instead.

Since posts are automatically sorted by posting timestamp, that would make Terrabod the new thread OP. So no. Just report to the new thread.

New draft is up, and hopefully the [Description] reads a little less clunky now! :D

Okay, we get it, you hate Trump, Fox is bad, CNN is good. So original, very creative! He's still living rent free in your head!

This is so bad that it's not even funny. It's worse than "Good Guy With a Gun" and "homophobia is off the menu". NS thrives on hilarity and stereotypes, but I've seen more of this "choosing a rightist option is a BAD opetion" sneaking in. Be it in "Good Guy With a Gun" or removing the neutral duality of choices by promoting one choice as the "absolute good" and the others as evil, this rot needs to be called out.

If this character was supposed to Jewish, he would straight up be the Happy Merchant. It's that bad of a caricature. You would not tolerate a streotype that crude for almost any other demographic, but as usual, the American right is the punching bag.

Describing the source as wearing a specific political hat on a specific political program ("ha ha CNN Truth Faux News") and, of course, using Bigtopia (as if East Lebuckistan, Gallia, or Canuckiland aren't things) as a stand in for casual racism is not even stereotyping. It shows your disgust for almost half of an entire country and your bias. Okay, we get it, you hate Trump supporters and think they're some sort of demon. How original.

I propose an alternative:
"Foreign savages, are you KIDDING?" snarls @@RANDOMNAME@@, a minor noble whose family tree is tattooed on his back. "The entire point of royals marrying IS TO PRODUCE A HEIR. Are we forgetting that? Heirs? Anyone? It's bad enough that the fruits have corrupted the lower classes and less noble noblemen, now you want to rot the Crown! No, and no to foreign adoption! Our royals should be marrying REAL @@PLURALDEMONYM@@ and produce NATURAL heirs of @@ADJECTIVE@@ stock, like my lovely child who, by the way, is single! Any HEIR that one day waves our scepter should be a @@DEMONYM@@ conceived as nature intended, not some queer foreigner, and they should marry my beautiful, unmarried child. Who's single.

Terrabod wrote:Anyway, my point wasn't specific to feather boas, it was about the hyperfemininity of most gay people represented in issues. There's an issue implying the gay character wants to wear a dress and that goes in the same book for me. I wouldn't really mind if it wasn't that almost every single gay man that's ever appeared in an issue is reduced to that one single character trait. We're in cliché territory now.

Cliche? Yet the "all Trump supporters are inbred racist cavemen filled with hate" in Option Three isn't? Why is anyone not talking about that?

Your feedback and commentary is appreciated but I disagree with it. NS is about satire, and satire has the tendency to create caricatures from things seen in real life. This is one such example, where an occurrence from real life is being blown up as a caricature. Caricatures and satire can be confrontational, and will not always make everyone laugh or have them see the humour in it. Yet NS issues are filled with caricatures and stereotypes, from LGBTQ people to right-wing people. There is no reason why the latter should be exempt from being turned into a satirical caricature, and NS is about political satire. Considering you have been on NS for a while from what I see, you should know that.

And please do not make assumptions about me or my political views, I'm not even American. I have written issue drafts featuring various characters from different backgrounds and I did not shy away from turning them into caricatures regardless on what they were based upon. Caricatures of LGBTQ, of left wing people, right wing people and so on. There's no reason why the right-wing should be exempt from being subjected to satire and caricatures, especially based upon things that are recognisable from society.

As a centre right conservative myself (most of the regulars in GI and the editing team already know this), I find nothing offensive about this draft.

Yes, the speaker in option 3 is a Trump supporting red neck, but NS issues have always utilised stereotypes. There are a couple of issues where a gay man wouldn't be seen dead without his pink feather boa. Another stereotype.

If this issue gets edited and added to the game, I will happily choose option 3.

I just don't understand why it would be offensive to some. Sure it portrays a stereotype, but there are stereotypes of all sorts of people like hippies, social justice activists, mad scientists, and even those with gay people.

As I said, the problem with the stereotype isn't that it's stereotyping rightists, but how laser-pointed it is to demonizing a very, very specific type of person.
It is such a tactless way that it looks like spite. Like, did you have to mention the MAGA hat AND Fox News AND Bigtopians on top of the usual "illiterate casual racist country caveman" trope?

Depicting the guy as a skinhead, a snobbish clergyman, or an inopportune person trying to marry into the royal family (as I did) are different. Heck, as much as I hate it, the isssue could easily be revised to depict country bumpkins with none of the ORANGE MAN BAD. You wouldn't even have to change the dialog! Heck, if your nation has serfdom, a serf in the middle of Baron Nowhere's fief could could say this without even changing the dialog.

I was just highlighting how there's a trend in newer issues where satire is not neutral and the ususal "objective right with caricature speak"/"objective left with caricature speaker"/"insane third option" system is being subverted by "homophobia is off the menu" and "Good Guy With a Gun".
