Denonym: Gatchin/Unionian
Nickname: Seven Stars

Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori nations, shortened as the Gatchingerrak Union, is a cultural and political alliance of four countries of the Quebecois Commonwealth located in mid-southern Rushmore (Norrskie Zasousti, Norrehavn, Gatchinovo and Novopetrograd). The three kingdoms and the citystate, while independent nations of own, do have the Gatchingerrak Union as a way to establish their common zone, where their main goals are to advance co-operation in military, cultural, economic and energy matters. It shares land border with Vaugania and Norrhem to the west, while bits of the east touch Phoenigetzusta. Combined population of the union are estimated to be around 81 million.

While its trio of nations have always fought with one another for centuries, Gatchingerrak Union is a culturally diverse nation with growing importance outside to that of the Quebecois Commonwealth. Its population is ethnically diverse, with the eastern, Novopetrogradian half of the realms primarily Slavic, while the Western half is divided to primarily Nordic Norrehavn on north and slavic Norrskie Zasousti on the south. Somewhere in middle of the lake, which faces all of the three nations, stands the island that is nowadays known as the citystate of Gatchinovo, the ancient place known for its significance on trades and diplomacy among the Rushmori realms of the Quebecois Commonwealth. It is where the Accord between the 4 states were signed in year 2030 (around the time of WC78), to promise co-prosperity among the rivalling states whose cooperation is needed more than ever. Its economy is a mix of natural resources and heavy manufacturing for it.

A no stranger to international sport, Gatchingerrak Union does have a past history of international football and hockey, where its western realms were represented as Norrehavn. It has hosted a Copa Rushmori and a World Cup of Hockey, and both sports are extremely popular. Unfortunately, the long years of absence from the international sporting circuit does mean that it is expected to be a long way back to relevance for the seven-stars.

Team: Osarius National Football Team (aka "The Firebirds")
Style modifier: +1.5 (counter-pressing defence; possession-based attack)

Manager: Odell McIntosh
Captain: Belshazzar Qanbari
Vice-captain: Marios Mundi
3rd captain: Aurelio Cesario

My RP Permissions are pretty chill to be honest.
Pretty much anything goes, I only ask that you let me decide the severity of any injuries you decide to RP for me, please.
Send my players off if you must -- if its a player I really didn't wanna lose for the next game, I'll RP an appeal or something.
Oh and at the risk of sounding a bit "RAWR" ... do not kill any of my players or coaching staff (unless I say go ahead via TG).
Killing fans is okay though. Go nuts with that if you like.

Kit Colours:
After a seemingly endless run with Corradini Sportswear, the new Osarius kits are produced by Audioslavian manufacturer Kirola. They are designed in conjunction with high-end fashion designer Giovanni Careva, leading to a Kirola x Careva line labelled Kareva.

Image

Manager: Image Odell McIntosh
Formerly the academy boss at Hastmead Diamante, where he coached several of the best young talents in Osarius, McIntosh applied for the job expecting to just get a foot in the door and potentially land a role at the national academy instead. But the OFA loved his pitch so much they gave him the job. With no experience at senior level before the Osarius job, McIntosh has relied a lot on his studious nature. Watching hours and hours of game tapes, reading reams upon reams of scouting reports, and countless conversations with more experienced friends, like Hastmead boss Filomena Corredera.

McIntosh, like everyone else in Osarius, is too young to remember the golden age, where the Firebirds were contenders at either the World Cup or the AOCAF Cup for almost two decades, but he will have seen the footage. He will have read the reports, the autobiographies, everything. He's still young, too. Only just into his forties at present, still learning. His first proper tournament experience came this past summer at the inaugural CAFA Cup, where he led the Firebirds to the quarter finals, showcasing some exciting attacking football along the way, and he will certainly be aiming to build on that.

He has a reputation for granting his players a lot of freedom, which is almost definitely a continuation of his policy as a youth coach, which he outlines as being "trust based". According to McIntosh, coaches must "equip players with the tools they need to do the job, then trust them to do it", which precludes rigid systems, but he certainly seems to have identified a core of players who he feels he can trust to carry out his gameplan.

The Squad
Note that generally speaking, higher numbers are less likely to feature. 1-11 are generally going to be the "full strength starting XI" unless otherwise stated.
The name in ALLCAPS is typically the surname of the player, but not always. This is what will be on the back of their shirt, however.
Feel free to throw in any additional Osarians occasionally if you want, just grab a name from this list (should have their age, position and current club; some clubs might be out of date)

GOALKEEPERS

## Name Pos Age Rating Club

1 AURELIO Cesario G 30 ★★★★★ Alissar Phoenix (OSR)
12 Shinji TERUZUKI G 27 ★★★★☆ Osarese Marcadia (AUD)
25 Benito BUCATINI G 23 ★★★☆☆ Arcaea County (OSR)

The goalkeepers for Osarius pick themselves these days, with Cesario still the best 'keeper in the Rabastor Premier League, and Teruzuki looking like a strong replacement when the Phoenix man finally hangs his gloves up. Some have questioned why Teruzuki doesn't start, given that he plays in a far stronger league, but Teruzuki still isn't a regular starter at Osarese, which would explain it. Aurelio's position as a leader within the Firebirds squad is probably also a major factor...

Bucatini as the third option was a huge shock at the CAFA Cup, as the young 'keeper still plies his trade at fifth tier Arcaea County, but he featured in the Rabastor Unity Trophy and impressed. This, naturally, led to a flurry of bids for the youngster, who has now openly told the media that he has absolutely no intention of leaving Arcaea County for another Osarian club. The specification of "Osarian club" has allegedly put some overseas teams on alert, but County's valuation is likely to be considered "extortionate".

DEFENDERS

## Name Pos Age Rating Club

2 Dafne CESARIO D RL 24 ★★★★☆ Utica United (OSR)
3 Ophélie PHILIPPE D RL 26 ★★★★☆ Olympique Corriere (OSR)
5 Marios MUNDI D C 30 ★★★★★ Karikinui (OSR)
6 Éric TIGANA D C 30 ★★★★★ Hastmead Diamante (OSR)
15 Didier KAREMBEU D C 25 ★★★★☆ Karikinui (OSR)
16 Ryu MASUYA D C 24 ★★★★☆ Hastmead Diamante (OSR)
17 Ekene UZO D C 24 ★★★★☆ Incanto Evolution (OSR)
21 Hugo MARCEL D RC 27 ★★★☆☆ Junipa Athletic (OSR)

Firebirds boss Odell McIntosh was a defender in his day, and so you'd expect him to have a particular method of selecting this part of the squad. You'd not be wrong. Mundi and Karembeu are actually likely to form the starting centre back pairing, as confusing as that is when you look at squad numbers. McIntosh explains this as being due to their strong partnership at club level. "You want familiarity between your centre backs," he explains. "Because it reduces the risk of miscommunication, things like that." This makes sense looking at his squad selections, as the backup pairing is another duo who are familiar with each other from club level (Tigana and Masuya). The spare centre back is young Ekene Uzo, who actually operates best in a back three... hinting at McIntosh's desire for tactical flexibility in this tournament.

Oddly, he has not selected either of the Karikinui fullbacks, though, despite the club having the best defence in the Rabastor Premier League... instead, he has opted for the more enterprising choices of Cesario and Philippe, both of whom can play on either side. This fits with his love of flexibility, though you'd think after some of the shocking defensive performances the Firebirds had in the CAFA Cup, McIntosh would perhaps want to shore things up at the back...

Notably, Azadeh does not feature in McIntosh's initial squad list for this qualifying campaign; she appears to have been the sacrifice made to create room for... well, you'll see. Marcel's inclusion is still curious, though. Sure, he's capable at centre back, defensive midfield and as a shutdown right back, but there's a feeling that there were more useful options here.

MIDFIELDERS

## Name Pos Age Rating Club

4 Malia NIKO M C 31 ★★★★☆ Hastmead Diamante (OSR)
8 Belshazzar QANBARI M C 30 ★★★★★ Alissar Phoenix (OSR)
10 Celestina FAVELLI AM C 27 ★★★★★ Ancarea FC (TKT)
19 Luther FOX M C 25 ★★★★☆ Incanto Evolution (OSR)
20 Louis PORTALET DM C 27 ★★★★☆ Karikinui (OSR)
22 Miriam BADAWI M RLC 24 ★★★☆☆ Firewood City (OSR)
23 Aristeia VIRIDIANA M RLC 31 ★★★★☆ Hastmead Diamante (OSR)
24 Kyshoen NAGY M C 32 ★★★★★ Langlois Océanic (KSK)

Predictably, the midfield is sculpted around Qanbari. This is how it has been for some time, and despite the Firebirds' continued failure to excel in any competition, it is almost unanimously agreed within Osarius that the team should be built around this man's talent. That he has not moved abroad is remarkable, though if he performs well in this tournament he may well end up in a much more prestigious league.

The return of Kyshoen Nagy will be welcomed by almost everyone (Qanbari notwithstanding perhaps; and Jebel Azadeh, who was ostensibly omitted to make space for the former Southfell and Kyoshiku man). Nagy is arguably the most talented Osarian footballer alive right now, and with the Firebirds staring down a long qualification path for the World Cup, it might be his final chance to make it to one. A double pivot of Nagy-Qanbari is absolutely a possibility, as is an inverted triangular midfield of Portalet anchoring Qanbari and Nagy's progressive runs. Similarly, Niko's passing range and excellent reads will continue to be invaluable as she will be able to pull strings from a deep role when Osarius are pressing -- a key facet of McIntosh's gameplan -- while Viridiana's versatility and dribbling are crucial for multiple gambits the Firebirds employ under McIntosh. Some are concerned at McIntosh's willingness to "break" his commitment to developing younger players, however, by including a trio of over 30s.

Of particular note is that only one of the seven midfielders selected could be characterised as "defensive" now that Niko's role has changed. Predictably, it's the Karikinui man. Portalet will offer very little offensively beyond laying the ball off to one of his more attack-minded teammates, but he certainly has a knack for winning possession, and with Osarius expected to be on the back foot more frequently in world cup qualifying than they were at the CAFA or RUT, Louis might be more important than in previous outings for the Firebirds.

FORWARDS

## Name Pos Age Rating Club

7 Antonio VERGARA F RC 25 ★★★★☆ Utica United (OSR)
9 Danielle JACKSON F C 28 ★★★★★ Brinemouth (NPH)
11 Lucea HYDE F RLC 30 ★★★★☆ Hastmead Diamante (OSR)
14 Naoya ENDO F C 27 ★★★★☆ Kyoshiku Island (OSR)
18 Karima SAGNA F R 26 ★★★☆☆ Newhaven Athletic (OSR)

Of course, Danielle Jackson -- whose popularity in Osarius basically makes her the country's third-largest political party at this point; behind the sitting People's Party and the rapidly growing Tukarist Liberation Front -- will start the majority of games up front for the Firebirds. It's extremely difficult to argue against this, as cruel as it might be for Naoya Endo, who unfortunately possesses a very similar style of play, and is likely to be restricted to somewhere in the range of 20-25% of available minutes at best... barring an unfortunate injury to Jackson of course.

Vergara and Hyde will likely take up the two wide positions, with Vergara attacking the backpost a lot, while Hyde will likely stay wide a lot more, using her height to win mismatches with fullbacks, before crossing for Jackson. Interestingly, if Hyde is unable to play, it looks like this would necessitate a change in system as no other left wingers are named in the squad. Viridiana can cover there, but she's a very different kind of player to Hyde. It will be interesting to see how McIntosh adapts if such a case arises. In theory, he could repurpose the midfield and play someone like Badawi wide left, or line Sagna up there and instruct her to start wide and cut sharply with pace... but neither of these would really offer what Hyde does either. Most likely, McIntosh would shift to a three-back system and use Dafne Cesario and Ophelie Philippe as wingbacks, which would provide an opportunity for Endo to play alongside Jackson. The prospect of two very quick, clinical forwards up top for Osarius is certainly interesting, though it's not something that has been in the national DNA since the days of Benedict Di Corradi (World Cup 49-55 or so, for those who are unaware).

The final spot is taken by Karima Sagna, whose rapid pace makes her also a different prospect on the right to the clever running of Vergara. Detractors of Sagna point to her questionable finishing and often wayward final ball, but it's clear that "traditional winger" is not her role. She's a pure counterattacker, who will beat defenders for pace and repeatedly find herself in one-on-one situations. She has 34 goals over the past three seasons in a frankly mediocre Newhaven side, and she doesn't take penalties... so she's gotta be doing something right.

Projected Starting Lineup:

The Euran Oceania Territories is a parliamentary federal dominion of Eura, formed of the Euran zone of the former Inevitable Syndicate and the Whittorian Islands. It has a population of around forty million people which is quickly rising, making it a beacon of diversity home to Syndicatians, Whittorian refugees, Euran migrants, Apoxians, Audioslavians, Samebans and many others. It has possibly the world's largest artificial crater, which dominates the landscape west of what is now a rebuilt Fligsive, the capital of this new entity. Its home stadium is the the Flynn Arena, where Eura beat Polar Islandstates 4-2 in the famous 66th World Cup final. Few would have predicted that the colours of red, blue and gold would become permanent there but its happened, and the stadium is now back in good condition after an expensive refit to return it to the 96,500 capacity it held previously.

Previously a wooden stadium, the current iteration of the Flynn Arena was rebuilt after a great fire destroyed the stadium during a game between Fligsive FC and Magnaeus City. Nowadays, it's a little more robust, having been the subject of many refurbishment projects over the years. The stadium was easily reachable on the Fligsive Metro before the violent overthrow of the Corvidae regime and the associated disaster in Fligsive. It now sports a combination of the old paint job as well as Euran blue and gold while the local club Fligsive FC are still in existence despite drawing lower crowds after the Mertagne exodus. Though they did not play in the hastily cobbled together amateur EOTLeague, they are the dominant side in the new professional EOFL.

Euran Oceania Territories formed a national football team not long after the founding of the political entity, a project conjured up by the Euran government Ministry of Sport to imbue a sense of cohesion among the diverse population of EOT. They played a series of friendlies against other "Eurasphere" sides from Endemia and Rushmore in a lengthy state subsidised tour. Their first games were defeats against Daera, Itor and the Ferguson Islands, before an unexpected 4-3 victory against Helving, despite their Euraleague star Scott Barnes scoring a hat trick.

They then entered the 50th AOCAF full of excitement despite having a mostly amateur team, including serving military personnel, but were promptly demolished in the group stages by several teams. Now, with the citizenship laws relaxed to allow the growth of the Territories, the "Underdogs" as they have come to call themselves were suddenly confident that they might be able to pull off a shock or two. Their first manager was of top class pedigree - Tolgus Tregajorran, a footballing hero in Apox who was well known on the international scene.

Tregajorran managed to persuade some former Apoxian internationals, playing in Eura and with no international allegiance following the temporary dismemberment of Apoxian professional football, to sign the relevant papers and make the surprise switch to EOT, as well as Euran's and other international exiles. After several years of bit part competition EOT competed in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time and in turn the Baptism of Fire, after the Sameban national team withdrew from the Endemian International Sporting Agreement and international football.

EOT performed poorly at the Baptism of Fire, going out at the group stage, but put on a respectable showing in their qualifying group for the 80th World Cup. Tregajorran's unexpected departure and a chaotic period followed with Rhys West as manager, who was soon sacked over an off-the-pitch indiscretion. It ended with the controversial appointment of Euran footballing legend and cult icon Skorji Oslograd halfway through World Cup 81 qualifying. Immediately applying Oslograd's "Skorjiball" approach - best summarised as an extremely aggressive and fluid attacking game interrupted sporadically by the manager doing something inappropriate - the team secured some noteworthy results but remained very much an underdog competitor reliant on an aging core within its squad.

Oslograd's dream of turning the Expats into the living embodiment of "the way of the warrior" and getting them to the World Cup achieved mixed results. He put them on the map and achieved some memorable (some might say historic) victories, beating Audioslavia and Valanora being among the highlights, and during his last two campaigns Oslograd got the Expats playing their best World Cup qualifying football to date. Most importantly Oslograd played a huge role in strengthening the domestic game and creating the first professional league in the territories since the days of Mertagne. But qualification was never quite achieved despite six full attempts, and his scandalous antics frequently landed the EOFF in hot water with other countries and international footballing authorities. Eventually he dramatically departed to take up the Eura job after their bewildering failure to qualify for World Cup 87, leaving chaos behind him but arguably a strong legacy too.

EOFF chiefs were caught off guard by Oslograd's impromptu departure, and were forced to opt for a 52 year old Wolcjeck Gruber as a replacement. Gruber was the most talented and well known player to come out of Austroslovakia, Eura's western neighbour, and enjoyed a successful Gold League career with Whitepill and Brigham. Its been thirteen years since his retirement as a player and in that time Gruber hasn't done much, other than managing in Euran non-league and taking up a head coach position at Oslograd Academy. Rumour has it the old boss put in a word for Gruber, who was then appointed by a unanimous vote of the EOFF board. He requested Expat and close friend Ian Osborne be appointed his assistant, another Oslograd Academy staff member and Euran-born Expat. Expectations are likely to be high for Gruber and Osborne; although the Expats don't have some of the experienced pre-formation veterans Oslograd had when he started, they have much more depth and a number of young prospects. Gruber has a tough act to follow and did not start well with a poor performance at the AOCAF, but his side improved their form in World Cup qualifiers and AOCAF64.

Manager – Image Piarres Erke – Age 45
Astograth did poorly during World Cup 88 qualifying, with accusations flying that manager Louis Vaudrail had finally ‘lost the plot’ and/or that his decision to call up a woman to the national team – a first for Olibondeka – represented the downfall of society. At any rate, Vaudrail resigned from his post following a 4th-place finish and no invitation to the Cup of Harmony. His replacement is Piarres Erke, who arrived fresh from being sacked at Athletic Club Olarria.

Who is Piarres Erke? As a player a virtual nobody, a left-back who plied his trade in the dark years without a national league and then, in his 30s, served as a bench player for Gortz United in the relaunched First Division. As a manager, however, Erke came to be hailed as a young prodigy. Aged 38, he took charge of a Gortz United 4 in crisis and guided them to one of the most impressive turnarounds yet seen in the Astograthian top flight, climbing from rock bottom to a comfortable finish in the mid-table. Next season he’d place them 8th, one of their better campaigns ever. The following year he was hired by Athletic Club Olarria and qualified them their first international competition in three decades. The next few seasons would prove less fruitful, as Olarria slipped down the table, and at 10th-place campaign drew the curtain on Erke’s tenure.

The Futbol Astograthiko Federazioa clearly consider him a talented manager anyway and have given him the task of qualifying for World Cup 89, following an impressive 4th-place finish at Copa Rushmori 38. Though Erke has kept the skeleton of Vaudrail’s squad, which qualified Astograth to World Cup 87, some of his new call-ups have raised eyebrows and more than a few mutterings about favouritism. Erke appears to have a fondness for players outside of the traditional Astograthian Top 5, and especially Athletic Club Olarria. Still, the team continues to draw heavily from foreign leagues, with a record 7 players from Audioslavia, 3 from Farfadillis, and one each from 6 different nations.

Erke aims to play a 4-2-2-2, similar to the one of Vaudrail’s latter stages, with two defensive midfielders, two wingers, and two strikers. This is done partly to take advantage of Astograth’s two prominent forwards and partly because no adequate central attacking midfielder has been found to allow for a successful 4-2-3-1. This formation under Vaudrail proved vulnerable due to the large gaps it leaves in the midfield and how much it demands from the full–backs – Erke has argued the defect was in trying to play defensively with this arrangement, when the focus should always be on getting the ball forward. If necessary, Olibondeka could shift into a conventional 4-4-2 or into a 4–2–3–1, employing Muhaburu or Ishimoda as attacking playmaker.

Assistant Manager – Image Aberri Buruchaga – Age 36
Buruchaga was an old-school starting right-back for Astograth University and Iturributa United before wrapping up his career at Athletic Olarria and becoming Erke’s right-hand man. Not a tactician but certainly a loud and vigorous motivator.

Starting XI:

#1 – GK – Gentza Bedigax – Age 35 – Image FC Felsenkirchen 1879 (Siovanija and Teusland) – 82 caps, 1 goal, 36 clean sheets
Once starter for Urbizania Wanderers, now playing for one of Siovanija and Teusland’s top teams, Bedigax has steadily established himself as one of the best goalkeepers ever to play for the national team. His games-per-goal-conceded ratio is the best among long-time Olibondeka keepers. Bedigax was also the first goalie to score an international goal for Astograth (in a freak accident against Electrum), and with several club honours under his belt is looking to add international glory to his career. Sports distinctive mutton chops, which along with his size have led him to be nicknamed Hartza, The Bear.

#5 – LB – Marko Martel – Age 28 – Image Lajuno (Eura) – 87 caps, 2 goals
Martel is one of Astograth's most exciting players. Bursting onto the scene at just 18 years old, he was part of Sporting Ibarguren's Royal Cup–winning team, beating Urbizania Wanderers in the final despite being a second–tier side. Swiftly transferred to giants Sporting Iturributa, he was part of a league–winning squad but, frustrated at the lack of playing time, forced his move to Athletic Club Olarria, where more strong performances earned him a place on the national team and on the famous Galácticos longlist. Nothing if not ambitious, he further secured a move to the Euraleague and displaced Remondegi as starter for Olibondeka. As an established fixture of the national team, his only craving is international silverware.

#2 – CB – Mogel Doyenard (C) – Age 34 – Image Sporting Iturributa – 125 caps, 7 goals
Doyenard is, by conventional wisdom, the best Astograthian defender currently playing. The key to Sporting Iturributa’s unprecedented First Division threepeat was their impenetrable defense, from which they held an iron grip on Astograthian football. Doyenard has been the core of that defense for a decade, and commands respect throughout the league. Measuring 193 cm, he's also a valuable asset in attacking corners, especially when the opposition proves hard to beat in open play. As Olibondeka’s 19th ‘centurion’ and long–serving vice–captain, he was the obvious choice to succeed Lekea as team captain.

#3 – CB – Alarabi Labeaga – Age 27 – Image Mâ Âlâmëómë (Farfadillis) – 50 caps
An impetuous young talent, Labeaga came through the youth ranks of Urbizania Wanderers, rapidly making his way to the first team at age 18 and featuring in their title–winning run of 680. Vaudrail, then manager of Royal Rumiatzi, arranged their purchase of Labeaga but was unable to control the centre–back's ego and demands for a starting spot. Forcing a move abroad, he was able to land at the renowned Mâ Âlâmëómë of Farfadillis and immediately won a league title. Labeaga considers himself a god of defending, which tends to rub staff and teammates the wrong way, and his unruly friendship with Muhaburu has led to some sordid headlines. Can also act as defensive midfielder – emphasis on defensive – if necessary.

#16 – RB – Ixaka Echeberz – Age 32 – Image AC Izotz Zubia (Audioslavia) – 86 caps, 2 goals
Echeberz is a solid, reliable player who can stay in defence or move forward into a more modern wing–back role. An important player for Urbizania Wanderers, his performances for the national team caught the eye of the powerful Izotz Zubia, securing him an unexpected transfer to the Audioslavian National League. Not the most exciting player, but he has heart, confidence, and experience.

#8 – DM – Baraxil Muhaburu – Age 27 – Image Rülândéá Kôstä (Farfadillis) – 49 caps, 1 goal
A youth product of Garitzeta Racing Club, Muhaburu was set to break into the first team when Racing took a deep dive into the Second DIvision. Setting his sights elsewhere, Muhaburu landed in Farfadillis, signing for Rülândéá Kôstä and later marching to league glory. Despite his reputation for a poor attitude and off–pitch antics, including a fondness for drink, Vaudrail has been eager to take advantage of Muhaburu’s excellent vision, passing technique, and ability to threaten goal or take set pieces. Paired with Bergara, Muhaburu will be the main creative outlet. Although capable at defending, it is far from his specialty – a weakness opponents may exploit.

#15 – DM – Domiku Bergara – Age 31 – Image AC Izotz Zubia (Audioslavia) – 54 caps, 1 goal
Hardworking Bergara was spotted as a sharp talent at a young age, and Urbizania Wanderers shelled out a big wad of cash to sign him from Iturributa United at age 21. With Wanderers, Bergara got his hands on a league title and a Royal Cup before striking out to join Audioslavia's AC Izotz Zubia, where he has enjoyed great success and earned a place on the national team. An elegant, patient player skilled in both defence and with the ball, he’ll have the pressure of being the main ball–winner in a formation that tends to leave the midfield open.

#11 – LM – Eskuin Nekol – Age 25 – Image AC Izotz Zubia (Audioslavia) – 35 caps, 6 goals
Nekol is perhaps one of the most shocking comeback stories in Astograthian football. A product of Royal Association’s academy, he transferred to Sporting Iturributa while still a teenager and quickly found himself in the first team of a club that was a on a roll, winning three league titles in a row. The following season was disastrous for Sporting, dropping down to 7th, but Nekol’s career was on the rise as a clever winger that could shoot from range, catching the eye of international scouts. Then, in the cup final that could save the season, Nekol was subbed on and stupidly punched the opposition captain in extra–time; Sporting would lose on penalties to the lowly Gesterlake. This effectively ended his career at Iturributa, allowing AC Izotz Zubia to swoop in for cheap. The rest is history – a National League title and an incredible, 45–yard goal to his name, in just his first season.

#10 – RM – Ihazintu Malkorra (VC) – Age 33 – Image Aries Chariots (Nephara) – 109 caps, 22 goals
Malkorra, voted three times best right winger in the First Division, was a youth product of Miners FC before signing with Royal Association and eventually cross–town rivals Sporting Iturributa, emerging as one of Astograth's best players – his dribbling is mesmerising, and can flow freely from center midfield to the back to up on attack as the situation requires. In Nephara he has shined for both Vermillion Wanderers and Aries Chariots, making the Galáctico longlist multiple times.

#7 – CF – Olentzaro Karazatorre – Age 28 – Image KT Moreazerua (Audioslavia) – 66 caps, 25 goals
Karazatorre, one–time winner of the First Division's Young Player award, became known to the Astograthian public at age 20 with aplomb. He banged in 13 goals in a season for the modest Antiguoko FC as they finished in 10th place, then 15 as they climbed to 8th, then 19 goals, before signing with Ituraitz FC, Pyathora Mariners of Tikariot and finally Audioslavia’s Moreazerua. Karazatorre appears to have finally found his stride with Mozi and the national team, shining in the National League and racking up 8 goals in 17 matches during the last qualifiers.

#9 – CF – Aire Epherra – Age 35 – Image Rülândéá Kôstä (Farfadillis) – 78 caps, 38 goals
A regular in the Astograthian First Divisions' top scorer charts, Epherra is a tall, burly, clinical target man skilled at spearheading counter–attacks and holding up the ball to play in his teammate. Despite getting up there in years, he seems the person least concerned. With an impressive record of 38 goals in 78 caps (baby), Epherra is the nation’s 5th top all–time scorer having played far less matches than the players ahead of him. The foul-tempered Epherra doesn’t much like strike partnerships, but has built a begrudging respect for Karazatorre over the years.

Substitutes:

#13 – GK – Echepare Rospide – Age 26 – Image KT Itzalovalle (Audioslavia) – 7 caps, 4 clean sheets
A low–profile product of Garitzeta Racing Club’s academy, Rospide was snapped up at 21 by the eagle–eyed scouts of Audioslavia’s KT Itzalovalle. They evidently saw something that local coaches did not, because Rospide, in a few short years, has taken over as starter and performed admirably in the IFCF’s top–ranked league. Made his international début at the World Cup 87 finals against none other than Nephara, after Bedigax was forced off with an injury.

#23 – GK – Unax Goyenola – Age 21 – Image Dockyard Oaks – Uncapped
Displacing Ayuko Mitsushima – who never got to make his début – is Unax Goyenola from minnow tean Dockyard Oaks, the first player from the club to be selected to the national team. Former captain of the Astograthian U-20s, Goyenola is outspoken and confident beyond his years, a commandeering presence at the back. Erke hopes the call-up will help him develop into an experienced goalkeeper who can take up the national team mantle when necessary.

#19 – LB/LM – Urtzumu Ganzarain – Age 25 – Image Guerrilla Cathair (Audioslavia) – 16 caps
Ganzarain is, not without controversy, the first woman to be called up to the Astograthian national team – which has always been, nominally, unisex. As a left winger who came through Army United’s women’s team, Ganzarain struck off to Audioslavia’s Guerrilla Cathair rather than stay in the segregated Astograthian system. Her promotion to the National League with Guerrilla caught Vaudrail’s eye and he subsequently deployed her as left-back or rarely in midfield during the World Cup 88 qualifiers. Her performance was more than adequate, at times surpassing starter Martel, but the cultural-political implications of her selection to the team continue to stir up Astograthian social media and press. Being voted into the best 11 of Copa Rushmori 38 despite mostly starting from the bench, has prompted another round of controversy.

#19 – CB – Irakusne Hecharri – Age 22 – Image Royal Ibarbe – Uncapped
A year ago, Hecharri was a complete unknown: a young centre-back signed from Sporting Iturributa’s women’s team to play for Royal Ibarbe in the First Division. Ibarbe manager Ilazki Altzibararechuluaga entrusted her with starting in one of the Astograthian league’s strongest defences and she responded immediately, becoming a reassuring and highly-rated fan favourite. Quick, agile, and a very clean tackler, she brings something different to Erke’s options in the national team. The controversy over selecting women to the national team is not over, but Hecharri’s high performance, like Ganzarain’s, speaks for itself.

#4 – CB – Aztore Andia – Age 28 – Image Royal Rumiatzi – 15 caps
Royal Rumiatzi value a very specific type of centre–back: big ones. Tall, wide, impassable and immovable objects, passing skills optional. Andia ticks all of those boxes, including the optional one. His job is to sit in the middle of a deep defense and be impassable, while laying out the ball to those who know how to move it around. If this is all he’s asked to do, he can do it extremely well. Excels at man–marking big centre–forwards, so may be brought on to specifically counter one of those.

#6 – RB – Baiona Menduburu – Age 30 – Image Sporting Iturributa – 13 caps
A product of Sporting Iturributa’s renowned academy, Menduburu spent his early years at the club as understudy to starter Cheru Lizarza, who at that time also started for the national team. Promoted a couple of seasons ago after Lizarza’s acrimonious departure to Ituraitz FC, Menduburu has proven himself capable if unspectacular as a right–back, rough but effective in the tackle. If asked to push further up the pitch, however, Menduburu has been known to pull off some ludicrous feats, including a goal from the halfway line in the Iturributan Derby.

#14 – DM – Potz Gambor – Age 26 – Image Canbix Muses (Zwangzug) – 12 caps
Gambor was discarded by Ituraitz FC after outgrowing their U21 squad. Not one to lose hope, he took his talents abroad and found a home in Zwangzug’s Canbix Muses. There he has steadily earned a place and shone brightly enough to catch the national team’s attention. Can be deployed in defensive midfield or a bit further up as a box–to–box midfielder – whatever makes the most of his endurance, tackling ability, tight passing and knack for long shots.

#17 – DM – Artizar Bailo – Age 28 – Image KT Itzalovalle (AUD) – 5 caps
At the Copa Rushmori, Bailo was the biggest surprise on Erke’s squad. With so many central and defensive midfielders to choose from, Bailo was most people’s fourth or fifth or even sixth option – he did not have high-level international experience, had never played abroad, and was not particularly young. However, his dogged determination and Erke’s personal knowledge of how to get the most from Bailo, made him a standout performer at the Copa and secured him a major transfer from Athletic Club Olarria to Audioslavia’s KT Itzalovalle. Bailo is the first player from the tiny island region of Bakartirla to reach the national team, so there is additionally a great regional pride involved.

#21 – LM – Anchoka Oyhantkabal – Age 26 – Image Real Campo Grande (Valladares) – 10 caps
A lithe winger, fast and incisive. Delighted the Astograthian league as a youngster and made a big move to Royal Rumiatzi at 21, but never really got going there. His chance to be a regular starter was later blocked by the signing of a Nepharan player, and in his frustration Oyhantkabal forced a move to Valladares’ ambitious Real Campo Grande. His call–up responds more to a lack of other options, but he’ll be eager to prove at club and country that he’s up to the task.

#20 – RM – Zilar Galharretborde – Age 27 – Image Langlois Océanic (Kelssek) – 32 caps, 2 goals
Galharretborde came through the youth ranks of Royal Arexa, and thanks to a wily agent and a leap of faith, he managed to land a move to Kelssek's Langlois Océanic. In his first season he impressed, earning the league's Young Player award and catching the eye of the national team in the process. He may not be the fastest or most technical player, but he is very good at stretching the field of play by building up moves from the wing, playing fluid football with his full–back and centre midfield. Galharretborde will be one to watch, partly because his style is markedly different from that of Malkorra and partly because his performances for Océanic have been stellar lately.

#22 – CF/AM – Tomofumi Ishimoda – Age 27 – Image Gortz United – 44 caps
A native of the Hinodejin Empire, Ishimoda was originally signed by Ituraitz FC after graduating from that country’s Asakawa College. Though touted as a highly versatile attacker who could be used as a centre-forward, a false 9, a playmaker, or a winger on either flank, Ishimoda’s first few seasons were troubled by injury, lacklustre performances as a substitute, and the coaching team scratching their heads wondering how he fit into their plans. A loan spell at Bakartirla Buccaneers finally allowed him the time and space to shine, and when transferred to Gortz he completed his revelation of himself as a virtuoso. Guiding Gortz to an incredible, unprecedented title challenge and eventual runner-up finish, Ishimoda combines speed, tremendous dribbling skill, precise passing, and an acute positional awareness, allowing him to drop deep into the midfield yet always be in the box when required.

#18 – CF – Olentzaro Anseotori – Age 31 – Image Athletic Club Olarria – 4 caps
Anseotori is one of Erke’s personal favourites and a player whom fans have been expecting to see in the national team for some time now. Anseotori has been described as a similar kind of striker to Epherra – an imposing target man – though with nowhere near the size. A lethal goalscorer with his feet and his head, his record for Olarria comes out to about 1 goal every 2 matches. Anseotori is also more comfortable than Epherra playing in a frontline of two, having successfully adapted his game to a variety of different partners at Olarria.

Home grounds
The national team will play at different venues depending on the match. The assignments are as follows:
MD3 vs. The Licentian Isles - at Grand Duke's Stadium (90,000), Rumiatzi - the national stadium
MD5 vs. Malta Comino Gozo - at Castle Hill (48,861), Gesterlake - the home of Gesterlake FC
MD7 vs. Darkmania - at Ituraitz Sporting Ground (63,000), Ituraitz - the home of Ituraitz FC and Ituraitz Victory
MD9 vs. Kimi-suomi - at The Willows (45,300), Oyardo - the home of Oyardo FC
MD10 vs. Kelssek - at Grand Duke's Stadium (90,000), Rumiatzi - the national stadium
MD11 vs. Euran Oceania Territories - at Old City Stadium (72,000), Iturributa - the home of Iturributa United and Sporting Iturributa
MD13 vs. Bongo Johnson - at Silanes Park (55,140), Echegoyan - the home of Echegoyan FC

Siovanija & Teusland National Football Team

Facts

Nation Name: United Republics of Siovanija and Teusland
Short Names: Siovanija and Teusland, the United Republics
Demonyms: Siovanijan, Teus
FA: Siovanija and Teusland Football Association (STFA)
Colours: Blue and gold
Anthem: ‘High Mountain Skies’
Capital City: Borograd
Other Major Cities: St. Jakob, Stelburg, Vlaikograd, Chernovets, Felsenkirchen
Highest Domestic Youth League: Republikaliga
Nicknames: The Goldhorns
Style Modifier: +1.5

Manager: Robert Feicke

It’s official: Feicke is the new man in charge. Appointed at the end of a disappointing Cup of Harmony campaign, the former SV Preisfeld man is looking to right the ship for the Goldhorns. The performance at the AOCAF was strong, with a new-look squad: a much more structured shape, a new formation (4-2-3-1) and the beginning of a new era personnel wise as well. Numerous players will have big new roles to play, including perhaps the nation’s newest star: forward Wilhelm Hielscher-Zendagorta, a Teus/Audioslav dual national who helped Cazadores Cathair to the IFCF Champions League title. Feicke now takes on his first World Cup Qualifying campaign. A new era begins.

Goalkeepers

GK -- Ewald Heuser -- Brinemouth (NPH) -- 31y/o -- 99 caps, 20 clean sheets
GK -- Anatoli Sveteikov -- Olympia Borograd -- 37y/o -- 31 caps, 7 clean sheets
GK -- Lino Kaberle -- Sporting Iturributa (ASG) -- 24y/o -- 13 caps, 2 clean sheets
GK -- Dennis Eulenberg -- FC Teussen Stelburg -- 34y/o -- 3 caps, 1 clean sheet

Ewald Heuser has proven himself one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world, the #1 for his club, Brinemouth, and a key part of their march to the Premiership title two seasons ago. A sweeper-keeper, Heuser is is the all-time most capped goalkeeper for the national team, and could hit the 100 cap mark this tournament. Anatoli Sveteikov is ever-reliable, and probably deserved more than his 31 caps to date in his career - but he’s managed to always be the second-best keeper, never the best. Lino Kaberle has done very well in Astograth and is likely the next #1 after Heuser. Strong and agile, Kaberle has the strange distinction of being incredible at penalties - dating back to his time as a forward in the TSV Marzig youth academy. Eulenberg is the solid #1 choice for Teussen, but most likely will not be a major part of the squad with the talent ahead of him.

Left Backs

LB -- Edgar Steimle -- 1912 Stelburg -- 32y/o -- 123 caps, 6 assists
LB -- Lyubomir Dimitrov -- FK Metropola Borograd -- 35y/o -- 71 caps, 4 assists
LB -- Axel Richter -- FC Teussen Stelburg -- 30y/o -- 30 caps
LB -- Bastian Mendel -- SW Stahlberg -- 29y/o -- 6 caps, 1 assist

Edgar Steimle is the main man for the Goldhorns here on the left side, a very quick and dangerous player down the flank. Concerns that he may have been losing some of that pace at the last AOCAF were thrown out after a brilliant season in the league with 1912 Stelburg, and he’s hoping to find his form again at the international level. Lyubomir Dimitrov was once a very similar player, but through injuries and a loss of pace thanks to age, he’s transformed into a very solid defensive fullback, and found a home once again in the national team after being named to the Republikaliga’s Best XI. Axel Richter is a similar player to Steimle, and now that he’s a bit more mature there’s some talk that he might pose a challenge to Steimle for that #3 shirt. Bastian Mendel, meanwhile, is a solid defensive player who is still finding his role in this team, the hope is this tournament might be a bit of a break-out for him.

Centre Backs

CB -- Karl-Heinz Jager -- Raynor City United (VAL) -- 32y/o -- 146 caps, 13 goals, 4 assists
CB -- Taras Maksimov -- Energija Chernovets -- 28y/o -- 40 caps, 2 assists
CB -- Tristan Niedermayer -- AFC Corvistone (NPH) -- 30y/o -- 41 caps, 1 goal
CB -- Paul Steinhausl -- FC Felsenkirchen 1879 -- 23y/o -- 11 caps
CB -- Frantisek Polak -- FK Metropola Borograd -- 23y/o -- Uncapped
CB -- Arno Amstutz -- FC Teussen Stelburg -- 27y/o -- Uncapped

Karl-Heinz Jager, of course, retains his spot as a key member of the squad. The centre back won the Premiership again with the Rockers last season, and is on track to be the most-capped defender in national team history by the end of his career. Good on the ball, and strong on the tackle, Jager is a leader on this team. Taras Maksimov had an incredible season with Chernovets in a title-winning campaign, and has cemented himself as Jager’s main partner and the future leader of this backline.. Tristan Niedermayer will want to impose himself in that conversation too, however, and the Corvistone defender will have every opportunity to do exactly that. Young Paul Steinhausl has a big future and has impressed on 11 caps. Frantisek Polak was a new signing at Metropola last summer and played a major role on the team's league campaign, while Arno Amstutz is a solid veteran who is surprisingly only debuting now - but the Teussen stalwart will be confident coming into the national set-up after a very solid season.

Right Backs

RB -- Darijen Vesele -- Rene Skae (FFD) -- 30y/o -- 73 caps, 2 goals, 9 assists
RB -- Nico Elsberg -- FC St. Jakob -- 22y/o -- 2 caps
RB -- Pierre-Louis Lotbiniere -- 1912 Stelburg -- 30y/o -- 61 caps, 4 assists
RB -- Luka Ambroz -- FK Metropola Borograd -- 28y/o -- 14 caps

Darijen Vesele is arguably the best right back in the world right now and is an incredible piece for this team to have, so fast down the wing and with an excellent cross. It’s made him a standout for his club team, too, where he was one of the best players in the new Shango-Fogoa Premier League. He was a bit of a late bloomer on the international level, though, and now that he’s really in his prime, it’s time for him to dominate. Nico Elsberg is a bit of a surprise pick here, but the young St. Jakob defender is quick on the ball and a strong, confident defender - a real statement of intent from Robert Feicke as to his future. Pierre-Louis Lotbiniere never quite became the star he was expected to be - Vesele arguably becoming the player pundits thought could reach incredible heights 10 years ago - but that doesn't mean he isn't still one of the best right backs in the country, and always gives his 100%. Luka Ambroz was part of Metropola's incredible domestic season and returns to the squad for the first time in 3 years.

Centre Midfield

CM -- Thorsten Kramer -- 1830 Cathair (AUD) -- 35y/o -- 226 caps, 76 goals, 93 assists
CM -- Todor Mihailov -- Revolutionaries (EUR) -- 31y/o -- 115 caps, 8 goals, 17 assists
CM -- Heinrich Bahr -- FC Teussen Stelburg -- 30y/o -- 67 caps, 7 goals, 4 assists
CM -- Jesper Porsche -- FC Felsenkirchen 1879 -- 22y/o -- 12 caps, 2 goals, 1 assist
CM -- Vsevolod Hristov -- Energija Chernovets -- 28y/o -- 5 caps, 1 goal
CM -- Henrik Martin -- Di Maozoxe (FFD) -- 25y/o -- 3 caps

Thorsten Kramer is the greatest player in our nation’s history, and his legend continues to grow as his career carries on at 1830 Cathair - although rumours of an impending homecoming continue to grow. He’s still missing, however, more international success - this may be his final shot at reaching the World Cup. Captain of the national squad, Kramer is undoubtedly the face of football in this country. Todor Mihailov was excellent at his new club, helping Revolutionaries to a Euraleague title, and hopes to continue his excellent career beside Kramer here. Heinrich Bahr has always been reliable as well for the national team, and could perhaps surpass Mihailov with strong play here. Jesper Porsche is a star renowned across the nation, having already been compared with new international teammate Thorsten Kramer, and he has been class on 12 caps so far, very much the future of this national team. Vsevolod Hristov was dominant in Chernovets’ midfield en route to a title win, and gets his first international opportunity here. Henrik Martin had an incredible season in Farfadillis, one of the top players in the new Shango-Fogoa Premier League, and he gets the opportunity to make his name at the highest possible level here.

Left Wing

LW -- Lojze Kokalj -- Olympia Borograd -- 28y/o -- 61 caps, 14 goals
LW -- Andrey Bunev -- FK Metropola Borograd -- 27y/o -- 18 caps, 4 goals
LW -- Linus Segert -- FC Felsenkirchen 1879 -- 30y/o -- 12 caps
LW -- Bastian Boltzmann -- FC Teussen Stelburg -- 24y/o -- Uncapped

The dual between Kokalj and Bunev at the AOCAF was settled as Andrey Bunev clearly made his mark on the team - and Bunev staked his claim even further by recording an astonishing Republikaliga campaign, as the league's Golden Ball recipient. They are similar-style players, both very difficult to mark and explosive with the ball. Linus Segert has matured from his younger days, when squad politics harmed his chances at the first team - he's getting a new chance under the new manager. Bastian Boltzmann has become Teussen's new star down the wing, and with Mario Kogler retiring from national team duties, it's time for a new Teus winger to rise to the top.

Centre Attacking Midfield

CAM -- Leopold Bliznakov -- Oakstone (EUR) -- 29y/o -- 55 caps, 11 goals, 20 assists
CAM -- Zdeno Stajskal -- Vrnovo Mesto -- 21y/o -- 3 caps, 1 goal, 2 assists
CAM -- Kurt Witzel -- FC Teussen Stelburg -- 31y/o -- 29 caps, 5 goals, 8 assists
CAM -- Julian Werner -- Ulsa (EUR) -- 28y/o -- 11 caps, 2 goals, 4 assists

Leopold Bliznakov was the annointed heir of Viktor Dimitrov as talisman on this team - but since then, the team has suffered two poor qualification campaigns, and not made much progress at the AOCAF. So the position is very much open if someone could seize it. Kurt Witzel and Julian Werner will both believe they can do just that - Witzel an incredible success in Stelburg, while Werner is fresh off a big-money move to the Euraleague - competing directly with Bliznakov. But watch out for Young Player of the Year in the Republikaliga Zdeno Stajskal, who had an incredible campaign with Vrnovo Mesto and looked solid at the AOCAF - it might just be his position to grab by the end of qualifiers.

Right Wing

RW -- Lukas Tauscher -- Brinemouth (NPH) -- 30y/o -- 111 caps, 33 goals, 21 assists
RW -- Florian Krukenberg -- FC Felsenkirchen 1879 -- 25y/o -- 22 caps, 9 goals, 12 assists
RW -- Gustaf Liechtenstein -- FC Teussen Stelburg -- 22y/o -- 5 caps
RW -- Jarozlav Jezek -- Energija Chernovets -- 22y/o -- Uncapped

Lukas Tauscher is the dominant player here, and maybe the best attacking player in the team. His move to Brinemouth proved fruitful, the club winning the Nepharim Premiership title in his first season, and Tauscher won the Iron Fist as debutant of the year. He’s a true star, and one the Goldhorns can count on. Florian Krukenberg. has become a force at Felsenkirchen alongside Vanorian superstar Lothas Ludwig as the club continues to compete for titles - and Krukenberg could make an incredible impact here. He’s excelled for the national team so far - and watch out for young Gustaf Liechtenstein too, the Teussen winger looking solid at a young age for his club as well. Jarozlav Jezek, the young Chernovets winger who has been highly touted, will also get a chance to perform here.

Centre Forward

CF -- Wilhelm Hielscher-Zendagorta -- Cazadores Cathair (AUD) -- 21y/o -- 3 caps, 5 goals
CF -- Stanimir Ilev -- CA Paulinthal (PAS) -- 35y/o -- 52 caps, 32 goals, 1 assist
CF -- Michael Ribbeck -- AFC Treason (NPH) -- 34y/o -- 133 caps, 109 goals, 3 assists
CF -- Krasimir Kynev -- Ibini FC (VAL) -- 34y/o -- 105 caps, 53 goals
CF -- Denis Dezelac -- Olympia Borograd -- 25y/o -- 12 caps, 6 goals
CF -- Marian Hovlak -- Soldarian FC (VAL) -- 22y/o -- 3 caps, 1 goal

After an incredible performance at the AOCAF, Wilhelm Hielscher-Zendagorta appears to have won the #9 shirt as Siovanija & Teusland's leading forward. It's a remarkable achievement given the competition - the reigning goalscoring champions of both the Nepharan and Pasargan top divisions. But the incredible AOCAF showing, combined with youthful excitement and skill, has given WHZ the leg up. Behind him, Ilev has been absolutely lethal in the Pasargan league, unplayable on his day, and winning the Golden Boot each year he has been in the league. And in the national shirt too, he has been excellent with 30 goals to his name. Ribbeck, meanwhile, is the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, and its most-capped forward. He led his AFC Treason side to a Zenith title last season, also earning Iron Boot and Iron Fist honours. Krasimir Kynev has announced he will retire from the national team after this tournament, and may get one or two more chances in the national shirt. Denis Dezelac has a key role for the future of the team, despite a difficult year at Olympia Borograd, and he should expect to get more appearances here - Marian Hovlak, too, is a young star of the future who should see more game time.

The Valladar national football team is known for having its traditional 3-2-2-3 (or 3-4-3 for general reference) formation, which for this WC campaign will mutate into a 3-5-2 by pushing back one of the three forwards to act as a playmaker, and can turn into either a very aggressive yet non-conventional 3-2-5 for attacking or a 5-4-1 (a 3-6-1, even) when the team feel the need to enter into a defensive mode. La Nacional will always be looking to attack and retain ball possession for as long as possible, trying to score many goals in the shortest possible time and mounting an insurmountable lead for the second half of the match when players from both teams start showing signs of fatigue. This squad mostly relies on the speed of its wingers both in attack and in defense modes, with another couple of players (nowadays Leandro Martelli and Christian O'Brien) playing the role of defensive midfielders that was well covered by Jonathan Bosetti, Pedro Pedretti, and Bryan Castillo in the past: both should be able to retreat to the defensive line with ease whenever the team lose ball possession in order to form a line of 5 defenders, thus giving rival forwards a very hard time when trying to break through the Valladar defense. Regardless of who the trio (now duo) playing up front is made of, those strikers are well prepared under the premises of the typical Valladar forward: very speedy and talented, with the ability to seemingly harmless crosses into goals, create chances and score goals out of nothing, and kill defenses with speed and lethal counterattacks.

San Ortelio
"The Swordfishes / I Spada"

Image

The Story

San Ortelio, your favorite minnow, stepped onto the international football scene a good three years ago as the San Ortelio Confederazione Calcio Extra-Regionale subscribed itself for the Di Bradini Cup 49. Against all expectations, the Young Swordfishes not only managed to stay afloat, but stunned all their opponents with a successful run. In the final, the formidable Graentfjall was beaten - a Cinderella story as there ever was one and this allowed the board to ignore that the manager they chose attempted to murder two players. Yeah, let’s forget about that part and focus on the silverware.

As such, it was with a bit more confidence that San Ortelio started their World Cup 87 qualifiers. Manager Renato Di Tane saw his selection stunt several times: Turori dominated the group by and far, but behind the mighty Eels, it were the Swordfishes that nicked the second spot. In the closing days of the qualifiers, opponents Juvencus, Qasden and Mercedini inched closer but with a one-point cushion, San Ortelio made it to the play-offs unranked. Baker Park, number nine in the world, easily disposed of I Spada but the first impression was made: San Ortelio was not here to be slaughtered.

It granted the Swordfishes a spot in the Cup of Harmony, where San Ortelio made it out of the group stage, but bowed their heads to a dominant Mriin on their goodbye tour. The Copa Rushmori, a few months later, is better forgotten: Pasarga and Yuezhou were just a class ab- oh, goddamned, now we’re thinking about it again. In the run-up to this World Cup, San Ortelio had their traditional friendlies: a (lost) duel against the regional rival Tikariot and a double-header vis-a-vis their favorite opponent Juvencus for the Coppa Odiol. The qualifiers themselves started off properly, vying for the second spot at the half-way point but a disappointing collapse saw the squad drop back to the fifth place. The hunger to redeem themselves in the Cup of Harmony was big and the performances strong, but despite appearing close to home in Graentfjall, Darmen proved too strong to advance to the second knock-out round. At the Copa Rushmori, the Swordfishes got their revenge against Darmen in the group stage, only to be bested by Hispinas in the next round.

San Ortelio itself is a small, coastal country located in the heartland of Rushmore. Consisting of the land stretched around a bay, it is known for its fishermen, coastal tourism and tax evasion. The climate is mediterranean and the atmosphere is always on that intriguing balance between holiday-relaxed and ‘are they talking or fighting in the middle of the street’.

Football has been around for nearly half a century in San Ortelio, with each of the five constituting regions organising tournaments early on. For a decade and a half now, the best clubs are united in the Serie Nazionale, which sends its best clubs (usually the Big Three, Catrallo Calcio, FC Pesari and Virtus Redoccio) to the IFCF since a year or three.

The Selection

Manager Renato Di Tane, despite mixed reception to the Copa Rushmori performances, held on to his position and selected a pool of 35 players for the qualifying series. Di Tane opts for a fairly defensive 5-4-1 which usually sees the numbers 1 to 11 start.

GK 34 Luca Dolci Catrallo Calcio 20 -

No doubts about the starting goalkeeper, Enrico Lanzafame will remain the man there. Despite a fairly uninspired nickname in the Wall, he is undoubtedly a key player in this selection and his performances in the WCQ and CoH stood out, even when the team was struggling. After two stints in the Brenecian A-League, failing twice to keep his team afloat, Lanzafame now appears for the Quebecois side Sherbrooke. If injury would strike - or we end up with a dead rubber - Serafino Evacuo will take his place. Whilst the Virtus goalie is a bit better vocally and in the box, he does not possess the catlike reflexes from Lanzafame. Behind this duo, youngster Moro may show himself on the training pitch and try to confirm his presence for the next campaign. A gentle giant, Moro once showed promise in the DBC but his progress seems to stall. He might be overtaken in due time by top talent Luca Dolci, a bench player for the champions of Catrallo Calcio but a promising, lanky, modern goalie.

A back five is the usually employed tactic and Di Tane tries at least to cover each position – whilst the wingbacks sport young elements, it is hard to find promising central defenders as Gioia and Crilese struggle to break through. On the left, 23-year old Gagliano developed into a starting position as part of the Blades. His speed also makes the line-up a bit less defensive than the numbers make you suspect, as Gagliano makes more infiltrations and crosses than his back-up Curiale. At the other wing, short and stocky Alessio Rota forms an enthused roadrunner who doesn’t ignore his defensive tasks but has been replaced by the more attacking and very energetic Moreschini - more of a right-wing than a back after all. It gives the Swordfishes a bit more punch, but expect the coach to fall back in line when needed.

The heart of the defense is formed by a rotating cast of four players. One that seems to go on without Moscati, still included in the wider selection but as has been shown in the friendly against Juvencus, getting too slow for the top level. We rather expect the very similar Lucarelli: physically strong, powerful header and a no-nonsense attitude. Lucarelli hasn’t got the best pair of feet and similar things can be said about Giuseppe Rocca. The man however lives up to his name and it splendid in the duels, even if his speed could improve. Orlando Castorani picks that up these days. The fresh, young Port Tacassam defender is a bit more modern in style and increasingly consistent. Third man Mazziero is easily overlooked but the most all-round of the defenders and as such the one that can be juggled around positionally in this line-up. The average age of this portion of the pitch is a long-term worry and it is telling that one of the two newcomers, next to Pilati, is the 30-year old Ferrera, previously overlooked by the coaching staff.

The midfield block usually falls into two categories: two holding and two creative midfielders must ensure the balance from the system. Previously, Fabrizio Confalonieri was the face of that first group: he takes no prisoners and will do everything in his might to break your legs stop your progress, while counterpart Di Masi possesses a better infiltration and might pop up in front of goal at times. The Copa Rushmori made clear it is time for a new generation, products of the successful DBC run: Quintarelli already wiggled himself into a starting spot and combines a sharp tackle with great vision. For Cappa, it is only a matter of time as he can direct a team despite his young age. If a goal is needed, Di Tane is inclined to add a less defensive type instead of one of the two starters. Buglia, the energetic Estdal box-to-box makes miles and war, offering an additional card in the deck. The alternatives are untested, but don’t be too surprised if Falco Borghesi leapfrogs them all.

On the other hand, Di Tane hold on to a duo of attacking midfielders and there, the biggest question mark of Ortelian football finally got resolved with the unexpected international retirement of Emilio Salvatori. Quick like water but with great feet, Salvatori indicated he wants to focus on his team Calcio, giving way to a Tikariotian-based duo to take the start. The main name among them is Gianmarco Del Prete, a man who earned himself the nickname La Leggenda already before joining the Rovers. Del Prete is the posterboy of the selection with his free kicks and exceptional vision guiding ditto passes. Additionally, he showed to rise to the occasion when needed. By his side, we will find Giacomo Favaro, an industrious yet elegant player. Being stuck behind this illustrious duo for a starting spot is a nearly impossible task but we expect to see some appearances from either Lorenzo Tosi, who seems slow but has a neat pass, or the capricious Alberto Sgarbi. Youngster Spinesi should steal with his eyes and got rewarded for his dedication at the Olympics.

There is a lot that can be said and written about the starting striker - and trust us, Ortelian newspapers did their bit for that already - but as the statistics confirm, there is no getting around Carmine Garofalo. Il Buffalo does not mind being employed as a sole striker and makes the required space with his strength and speed. What he lacks in refinement, Garofalo easily makes up in power and the last few years, he approaches the ‘one goal per match’ statistic - in the Serie Nazionale, of course. The question remains who will be his back-up if things go awry.

Orazio Canova had the advantage of age but his aspired breakthrough in Brenecia did not materialize - he’s acting in the B-League nowadays. On top of that, he’s a bit better in a system with two strikers whilst his main adversary for the position, Romeo Gozzi, is more of a lonewolf. A peculiar character, known for escapades on and off the field, Gozzi is a real finisher and on his day, can take on the world. But he might also grab a red for insulting the referee, seduce a female fan or refuse to come off the bench cause he don’t want to. After all his stunts, Di Tane decided to leave him at home for the CoH – after which Gozzi vowed that he’ld never play for him again - but under popular pressure, the forward is back. Either way, this opened up an opportunity for Cadili, a nifty winger who offers a chance to play 3-4-3, with Moreschini on the right wing - a rarity, but who knows. Behind these four, a new generation lines up and Di Tane wants to discover whom of those have long-term potential.

San Ortelio, your favorite pseudo-Italian, coastal microstate. Less than half a million inhabitants who stand for a rich culture, are governed
by an delicate yet marvellously balanced system and remain economically viable due to fishing and funky tax laws.
But enough about us. Come vai?

MANAGER: Sam Wahl

TACTICS: Typically play a 4-4-2 diamond that can evolve into a 3-5-2/5-3-2 by dropping the holding midfielder into the back line, something that Pringle - the team captain - is very well suited to. Wahl emphasises a possession game, but pocket rocket Hohepa can flip a switch with his elusiveness every time he gets going; he's particularly good at drawing a foul, and considering the opposition this team will face that's a huge boost as they'll likely need set pieces to score. Tamar tends to win quite a lot of aerial duels, which helps the efficiency of said opportunities, while Porfirio's pace makes him a threat to get behind a defense who sell out with a high line - a gamble these Kytlerians rarely take themselves, preferring to go with a low block and daring opponents to find a way through them.
Style modifier: -2 - they want to slow the game down if they can help it.

HOME STADIUM: Zube Olympic Stadium, Zube. Recently renovated ahead of the end of the latest Kytlerian isolation, this stadium was the centrepiece of the Games of the IX Olympiad, and is a national landmark famous for its pillar-suspended upper deck at either end, affording views of the surrounding city park (archive image here, from prior to its Olympic-sparked expansion). After renovations, it now has 61,093 seats. Deliberate? Of course it's slani deliberate.

TEAM HISTORY
This is the official roster, featuring the Elite Eleven, an independent squad of Drawkians who have played all sports at a professional level for a confusingly long time. The old Kick Corps has been essentially removed, the players let go, and replaced by this squad of ridiculously skilled, annoyingly arrogant, and possibly immortal sportsmen. Nobody knows where they came from, or why DISC decided to replace the Kick Corps with them, but here they are. Just don't ask the baseball fans about them.
Drawkian soccer, and indeed, sporting in general, is mostly offensive-minded. This is reflected in the style indicator and in the formation. Drawkian soccer has not really been exposed to outside influences, and thus may look or feel strange to those used to "normal" football. Nevertheless, the Eleven are still good at what they do, and prize in an enduring game, moving the ball around nearly constantly and keeping energy going, aiming to tire out the opposing team. Of course, Drawkians aren't humans, but you can read about that elsewhere. Despite the fact that usually soccer is a female-only sport in Drawkland, the Elite Eleven have overturned that caveat as the higher-ups deemed them a suitable replacement in the interim as the real Kick Corps hides away for a few cycles and gets their shit back together.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Yes
Yellow Card my Players: Yes
Red Card my Players: Yes
Godmod Other Events: Yes
As far as these go, I'm fair game for anything. You should know what is and isn't drastic RP, and if you think your RP is on the drastic side, TG me first. But I'm still basically up for anything.
I'd like to request that injuries or cards don't do anything outside of the scope of a single game or maybe 2. Don't want anything tournament or cycle-ending. Red cards should be limited to late knockout stages, and I'd probably think that there should be no more than 2 players red carded per tournament.
The Elite Eleven are sorta oddballs. I mean, they're a group of 11 dudebros, but they're supposedly immortal or something. Keep that in mind.

Disclaimers of various sorts:
I don't know very much about soccer. If I RP something weird, it's because I have little to no experience with this sport. But whatever.
If you have any questions about anything involving me, this team, my nation, this competition, life, etc., feel free to telegram me.

Eastfield Lodge Roster for World Cup 89

Image

Demonym: Eastfielder

The Imperial Commonwealth of Eastfield Lodge is a vast conglomerate of nations and states that resides almost entirely in a separate dimension to the reality you all know and love - a bubble universe would be an apt description (the why is a long story, involving the Dreamed Realm and a threat to the existence of the entire universe). The one bit of the country that lies in the regular dimension is a tiny island in the northern seas of the famous sporting region Rushmore, which serves as a transport hub for travel across the region by conventional transport, and for travel to the Imperial Commonwealth via something called a Void Ship (think of it like travelling through a well controlled wormhole).

The history of the country is long and complex, but the key overview is that it is a very socialist Muslim constitutional monarchy, with a noted reputation as being one of the nicest places to visit in the entirety of the known multiverse - the most recent WA census puts the Imperial Commonwealth in the top 100 nations in several measures such as Safety, Compliance/freedom from crime, Tourism, Weather, Compassion, Niceness and Environmental Beauty, amongst several others; most of which are also ranked as the best in the Rushmore region. Because of the initial portal, the nation advanced forwards in leaps and bounds technologically due to intermingling with denizens of another dimension, various alien races from the universe in which the popular RLStates TV show Doctor Who is situated. Whilst these aliens used to take part in life in the Imperial Commonwealth, even forming the Eastfielder National Team for a number of tournaments, they no longer exist in this bubble universe, due to a dimensional shift no longer aligning the two dimensions - for now, Eastfield Lodge only contains those beings that you find elsewhere in the NS multiverse.

Whilst we are a fairly chill nation, we are still fairly socially conservative, and there are plenty of special rules visitors need to be aware of:
  • No Alcohol. At all.
  • No smoking or recreational drugs at all. Visiting team members/fans will be given replacement/cessation therapy if struggling to cope.
  • No public displays of affection. What you get up to in the privacy of your own hotel room is up to you, as long as it stays there.
  • There isn't a legally enforced dress code, but at least dress respectfully, the locals will appreciate you.
  • Cities are by and large car-free zones; make use of the extensive public transport system.
  • Don't worry about a language barrier, there is an inbuilt telepathic translation circuit within the visas that you will be issued - it translates all speech and text into a language you understand instantaneously.
  • No unhealthy junk food will be available, the country is too healthy for that. Also, the food will all be halal, but there is an extensive range of vegetarian/vegan options for those who insist.
  • Ignore all the cameras and the police presence. They're for the safety of everyone.
  • High-level technology pervades every aspect of society and life here, get used to it.

Lodger City Memorial Stadium
Location: New Lodger City
Capacity: 150,000
Description: The home of Eastfielder football, the stadium was built on the ruins of the old capital of Eastfield Lodge, Lodger City, which was flattened in a double disaster (severe floods from dams bursting and an explosion from an unknown source, killing much of the population of the city and rendering the city useless. Administrative functions were transferred over to Lodgertia, the city began to be rebuilt, and it was decided that this stadium would be one of the monuments erected in place. The inside walls contains inscriptions of the names of all the dead – just under 9 million. The stadium used to play host to the two classic giants of EL football – RGS Athletic and VLC FC - until both had their new stadiums finished; it is now only used for internationals and cup matches.

Parliament Stadium
Location: Lodgertia
Capacity: 80,000
Description: Formerly the second largest stadium in Eastfield Lodge (until King Iqbal II and Vorgan Park were completed), behind the Memorial Stadium in New Lodger City, it was built in the centre of Lodgertia, the capital of Eastfield Lodge, and the Imperial Commonwealth. It was named due to the fact that the Parliament is based just a few hundred metres down the road; in fact, the original stadium was actually joined to the Parliament building, as an area where MPs could watch or even engage in sport with the public, as well as being a designated protest site. However, with Lodgertia becoming more built up, it was decided that the stadium needed to be built up as well. It is home to Lodgertia United and Lodgertia City alongside being temporary hosts of RGS Athletic and VLC FC (when Lodger City was being rebuilt), and in the past has hosted several international matches, including the final of SBCC 27 and a group in both stages of Market Cup 4.

Tavernia Stadium
Location: Tavernia
Capacity: 65,921
Description: Currently the largest stadium outside of Eastfield Lodge itself, Tavernia Stadium sits near the heart of the city of Tavernia, in Westmeadow Tavern, the nation bordering Eastfield Lodge. WC85 will see the stadium's debut when it comes to hosting the Eastfield Lodge National Team, but it is no stranger to WC football though - it was the home ground for Westmeadow Tavern when they had their own international football team in the earlier years of the Imperial Commonwealth. It is also home to the two best teams in Westmeadow Tavern, with FC Tavernia and Tavernia City plying their trade here.

Manager: Robert Andrews
Age: 56. The former national team striker, who had over a century of international appearances to his name during his career, was specifically recruited by a former Eastfielder manager, his old friend and ex-teammate Shabeen Ahmad III. Being the national team's assistant manager was his first major job in football since his playing retirement, but his ability to calmly analyse situations even under immense pressure has earned him some plaudits from those in the know, and as such allowed the ICELFA some confidence in appointing him as the interim manager for Cup of Harmony 77 - however, things haven't gone well since, and Robert only remains in the job courtesy of it being a poisoned chalice no sane manager wants to approach. After the disaster of World Cup 87, he rung the changes, almost root-and-stem, and removed much of the ageing squad in time for the most recent Copa Rushmori - the team didn't gel well, but one would hope that, with time, they'll come together and bring some glory to the Imperial Commonwealth.

Formation: 3-3-3-1
Image

It's a new look defensive formation for Eastfield Lodge now, with the team moving to three at the back, but still retaining the rotating attack system - striker and three players in behind moving about to find space. The central defender of the back three has permission to advance forwards on attack, allowing the formation to switch from a 3-3-3-1 to a more balanced 4-2-3-1 or even 4-1-4-1 in attacks, whilst the wingbacks retain the same attacking freedom they had under the previous 4-1-2-3 system. In terms of goal scoring, the ST will get the bulk of the goals, with good contributions from the AM and both WFs as well. The WFs will get most of the assists, followed closely by the AMs, then the ST, DM and the wingbacks.

Give out yellow cards to my players: Y (maximum five, TG me with a reason for more)
Give out red cards to my players: Y (only one more than the number given to your team, maximum of three - i.e. I get two red cards, you must have at least one)
RP injuries to my players: Y (Maximum 3, no career-ending injuries without my explicit permission – I reserve right to how long players are out; you can RP how severe it looks)
Godmod injuries: Y (within some reason)
Godmod scoring events: Y (Have fun.)
Godmod other events: Y (TG me if you're planning on killing anybody though, or anything really extreme.)

If I do RP, I will include the line-up for the next match in my RP post, along with any suspensions/injuries. If there is no line-up, look through my posts and check for current suspensions/injuries, but otherwise it’s fine. Also, if you're RP'ing any part of my match, please use the full name Eastfield Lodge at least once, it helps me find the RP.

NB: As the people of EL are extremely compassionate, and very civilised (despite what you may say about the religion), it would be uncharacteristic for the coaches/players to lose their temper, dive deliberately (jumping out of the way of bad tackles and falling awkwardly doesn't count), to be sent to the stands (if the ref is clearly very biased however...), spit, argue with the ref or fight. Players will also tend to inform the referee about mistakes/clarifications in judgement regarding throw-ins, fouls given but with no contact and goal kicks/corner kicks (plus other bouts of honesty - up to you).

PLAYER INFORMATION

GK: Semir Besak, 22, Mipojoseon [QUE]
20 caps, 0 goals
Besak took over as the starting goalkeeper for the national team during the World Cup qualifying campaign and a title-winning season with Mipojoseon in the Q-League will only have furthered his case as Mytanija's best goalkeeper. He also won the Emerald Rose award for the best under-23 player; and was the starting goalkeeper in the Team of the Year. He's accumulated so many individual awards as well as team trophies and he's only 22. He's an all-rounder as a goalkeeper, a brave shot-stopper and uses his height to good effect when coming out to claim high balls and crosses with confidence. His distribution is constantly improving and he appears to have a very bright future ahead of him.

GK: Pedja Kasun, 33, Ararat Severyan [MYT]
93 caps, 0 goals
Kasun might have felt confident of holding off Besak's challenge for the number one spot as he claimed the Golden Glove award in the Top League as Ararat only conceded 24 goals over the 30 game season, unfortunately for the veteran Lev Repin hasn't given in to sentiment and has picked the younger man for the starting job. The 195cm goalkeeper will not be bitter over this, he's vastly experienced and understands that it is the nature of the sport, but he'll be there if needed. His 195cm frame and athleticism makes him a great goalkeeper capable of making all kinds of saves, he's also a great communicator (as evidenced by his vice-captaincy); and is decent with the ball at his feet.

GK: Lazar Obradovic, 30, Liria Prizren [MYT]
9 caps, 0 goals
A dependable third choice option who hasn't played for the national team regularly over the years but has been a part of squads throughout his career. His last performance against Hapilopper (three goals conceded), might not fill people with confidence but with Kasun and Besak ahead of him in the pecking order the hope will be that it shouldn't ever really come to Obradovic. He's done well domestically over the years and is probably the best of the three goalkeepers with the ball at his feet.

DL: Damir Milcic, 26, Anomalies [CMT]
30 caps, 0 goals
A 4th place finish with Anomalies might not have been what Damir Milcic wanted this season but he's done himself no harm during his time in Chromatika, burnishing his reputation as one of the more consistent full-backs around at the moment. A product of Emir Saric's Tekstil is always going to be defensively sound and Milcic is no different, but he's added attacking output to his game and that means he's now the first-choice left-back/left wing-back in the current system used with the national team.

DC: Grigorij Savicevic, 27, AC Izotz Zubia [AUD]
55 caps, 5 goals
Savicevic is Mytanija's best central defender, a rangy ball-playing centre-half who makes those that play alongside him better. He's had a great career too, coming close to winning the IFCF Champions' League with Zozi and actually winning the Cup Winners' Cup with the club's 6-3 win over Astograthian side Ituraitz Victory. Solid everywhere he's been, it's fitting that he's part of the team for Mytanija's first trip to a World Cup in over twenty editions of the tournament.

DC: Bigger Mbala-Ekakia, 22, Atletik Thessia [MYT]
13 caps, 2 goals
Mbala-Ekakia's upwards trajectory has been incredible, he's started in a Top League winning defence at the age of 18 and then become the first ever black player to play for Mytanija a couple of years later. He's now going to be a starter at the World Cup alongside Grigorij Savicevic and Dino Racic. He came through the ranks as a defensive midfielder which perhaps explains why he's so confident with the ball at his feet and why he likes to dribble out of defence with the ball to provide an extra player in attacks. He could become the most technically gifted Mytanar defender ever if he continues on the path he is currently on and he has excellent physical attributes to combine with this meaning he could become another all-arounder like Savicevic.

DC: Dino Racic, 26, Libertas Bergheim [SVJ]
30 caps, 1 goal
Racic enjoyed a decent season with Libertas Bergheim, finishing 8th and earning a place in the Team of the Season as reward for his assured performances at the back. Racic is not quite as tall as his two starting colleagues in Mytanija's central defensive trio, but he is quite quick and this should mean the back three have complementary skills which help each other's weaknesses. Racic is confident in playing out from the back and has very good anticipation which allows him to position himself well.

DR/L: Patrik Odonelec, 25, CA Paulinthal [PAS]
50 caps, 1 goal
Won the cup but finished second in the league with CA Paulinthal this season, voted into the Team of the Season for his efforts. At a club with such high aspirations second place is always disappointing, the cup triumph did at least mean they didn't go home empty-handed however. Patrik is probably the best full-back in the squad, capable of playing on both sides of the defence to a high level and always trying to improve his game. He's the third member of the famous Odonelec footballing clan (alongside Jasno and Usten), born in Thessia unlike his two Prahecq born cousins. Physically strong and quick but it is his tactical intelligence and positioning which really make him shine.

DL: Ermin Urankar, 26, Ararat Severyan [MYT]
6 caps, 0 goals
An able understudy to Damir Milcic, Urankar enjoyed a fine campaign with Ararat Severyan as they finished 5th in the Top League and only a point off international competitions qualification. He grew up as a left-sided midfielder in Misel Ravnjak's highly defensive system at Ararat Severyan. This should make him pretty well-suited to playing the role of left wing-back in Lev Repin's 3-4-1-2 formation with the national team and it's something Urankar will relish, allowing him to pair his good passing and dribbling abilities with his fantastic positional awareness. He's also a very hard-working player and that's always a quality which can make a player a fan favourite.

DC: Mojmir Anac, 33, Olympic Thessia [MYT]
106 caps, 4 goals
Vastly experienced central defender who might have made this squad as Lev Repin's only nod to sentimentality. Anac's still a decent defender at Mytanar Top League level but he was never the quickest and any pace he had has seemingly disintegrated with age. Anac is most comfortable when competing aerially and this makes him a factor in both boxes when he plays. He was Olympic's inspirational captain during their first ever title-winning season, with his Player of the Season award meaning he was named in the Galacticos long list at the time. He's unlikely to figure much with the others in this squad but he will be vital in the camp as a key motivator.

DC: Kamil Jernejec, 30, Chromatik [CMT]
52 caps, 0 goals
Kamil Jernejec was at the heart of the Chromatik defence which pushed the club into the runners-up position in the Red League behind the all-conquering Wirr Tsi last season. That was enough for him to be selected as a second team all-pro, demonstrating just how highly though of he is in Chromatika. He's not the quickest but he's good in the air and boasts solid mental attributes as well as decent distribution. A back three suits him as others can make-up for his lack of speed and his passing ability is useful against lesser opposition when trying to break down their defensive shape.

DC: Andrija Ugljanin, 26, Veriasod Wolves FC [TKT]
7 caps, 0 goals
He is a defender who thrives in teams that have plenty of the ball because he is very confident at both dribbling out of defence in possession and picking passes to break through the opposition's defensive lines. One criticism of him has been that he dwells on the ball too long, perhaps a little overconfident in his ability, but during his time with Atletik he seemingly eradicated that from his game. Defensively he has improved greatly, no longer guilty of unnecessarily diving into tackles and learning to steer attackers into less dangerous positions wherever possible. Consistent performances with Energija-Nuklearna and most recently Atletik attracted attention from abroad and Ugljanin completed a move to Tikariotian side Veriasod Wolves at the start of the transfer window.

DR: Slobodan Vujovic, 22, Royal Rumiatzi [ASG]
8 caps, 1 goal
The second right-back/right wing-back spot was a real toss-up between Vujovic and Spiridonovic, the two are different players and although Vujovic has less experience (often being second choice with his club side) he has been selected ahead of the Litala '93 captain on the basis of his attacking talent. Vujovic offers something which none of the other wing-backs really provide, a real playmaking ability down the flank. Where the others offer width and precise passing Vujovic is able to drive into the opposition penalty area with the ball and cause problems directly and this makes him a goal threat and means he can pop-up with assists too. His defensive ability could do with some work, but don't be shocked to see him coming on if Mytanija need a goal.

MC: Alen Hrdaljko, 28, CA Paulinthal [PAS]
76 caps, 7 goals
A tough-tackling midfielder who is better on the ball than many give him credit for. Hrdaljko plays alongside Patrik Odonelec for CA Paulinthal at club level and won the cup with them this season along with finishing in the Team of the Season. He's a diminutive figure, standing at only 170cm, but he makes up for that with his all-action playing style and strong leadership characteristics. Those characteristics meant he captained his boyhood club, the national under-21 squad and the senior national side by the age of 22. A terrier of a player on the pitch he is crucial in the team winning the ball back from the opponent quickly and has mastered the art of tactical fouls if it isn't possible to do so fairly. Also an excellent passer of the ball, off both his left and right foot and a confident penalty taker.

MC: Mersudin Smajic, 26, Stahlburg City [NPH]
22 caps, 1 goal
Smajic has ascended into a starting role with the national team due to Lev Repin's desire to stiffen the team up a bit in the centre of the park. He's an imposing physical presence but also has excellent technical ability and has grown into a midfield conductor because of how adept he is at keeping the play ticking over. He was voted Player of the Season as Liria ended their title-drought domestically and earned himself a move to Nephara as a result with Stahlburg City. His passing, timing and the threat he brings when attacking set-pieces are his three strongest attributes.

AMC/MC: Jasno Odonelec, 31, Atletik Thessia [MYT]
108 caps, 41 goals
The national team captain and often a scorer of decisive goals, Jasno Odonelec may be getting older now but he's still dangerous for opposition defences. Nicknamed «le fantôme» in Prahecq - where he was born to Mytanar immigrant parents - for his ability to find space and not be noticed by opposition defenders, he's very good at getting on the end of moves. Can also play in a deeper position and that might well be where he is used going forwards, but for now at World Cup 89 he will reprise his number ten position with the national team and Lev Repin will hope he can continue his excellent form in the Hoops.

DMC: Zijad Kurtcehajic, 25, Crossroads [CMT]
12 caps, 0 goals
Kurtcehajic is a deep-lying playmaker who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, he has clearly mastered the dark art of breaking up the opposition's play with chippy fouls and somehow not getting booked for them. Solid performances for Atletik Thessia and at Litala '93 when out on loan drew admirers from afar in Chromatik side Crossroads, he's completed a move to them in the recent transfer window. A veteran of two DBC squads, reaching the quarter finals and co-captaining the under-21s to a bronze medal at the second time of asking.

MC: Tahir Fejzuli, 34, Mâ Âlâmëómë [FFD]
108 caps, 12 goals
Tahir Fejzuli has had an incredible career and he's still scoring important goals, as he did during World Cup qualifying with a majestic free-kick against D.K. South India. He's not first choice anymore, not quite having the legs to keep up with the most energetic matches (something he didn't always do studiously anyway, he was never the most dutiful when out of possession), but he's an extremely useful player to be able to bring off the bench due to his creative ability and willingness to take the ball and try and make something happen whether it be with a pass or a mazy dribble.

MC: Sefir Ajanovic, 27, FK Arsika [MYT]
26 caps, 4 goals
Ajanovic has grown into a really tidy footballer. He's another member of the Mytanar diaspora in Prahecq and his performances with Stade Yvelines caught the eye of FK Arsika and they brought him to the Top League as a result. Those performances were usually as a creative midfielder, laying on chances for his team mates and not having much in the way of defensive responsibility. Since moving to Mytanija he has developed that side of his game and is happy to play his part in his team's pressing system and a fair bit more combative despite his slight build. Finishing 4th and as runners-up in the National Cup represented a near-perfect campaign for FK Arsika.

MC: Dusko Ocokoljic, 24, St. Thomas [TLI]
3 caps, 0 goals
Perhaps the most surprising pick in the squad just due to the number of talented midfielders Mytanija has at the moment. Dusko sometimes suffers from being his brother, but he's really making his own path over in the Licentian Isles and he was part of a St. Thomas side which defended its league title last season. He was recognised for his contributions by being named in the Team of the Season and placing third in the Foreign Player of the Year award. He's an energetic box-to-box midfielder who has shown he is useful in Mytanija's pressing game in his three appearances for the national side.

AMC: Omer Kuhar-Arh, 23, Atletik Thessia [MYT]
6 caps, 4 goals
An incredible start to his national team career has seen him score 4 goals in 6 games and his performances for Ararat Severyan last season impressed Atletik so much that they had a move for the starlet organised within a couple of days of the season ending. He won the Under-23 Player of the Season award and that achievement ensured the giants of Mytanar football were interested, if his performances before hadn't been enough. Kuhar-Arh is a fine passer of the ball and his dribbling skills draw opponents towards him and allow his team mates more space. Has a knack of finding space in between the opposition's defence and midfield and exploiting this ruthlessly.

ST: Jezdimir Ocokoljic, 29, Energija Chernovets [STL]
116 caps, 69 goals
What more is there to say about Jezdimir Ocokoljic? He's scored 53 league goals in two seasons with Energija Chernovets; helped them to a league title and two AO Champions' Leagues; and he's scored 12 goals in 13 games for Mytanija to propel the national team to its first World Cup proper in over twenty editions of the competition. Ocokoljic is probably Mytanija's best ever striker, even if Kristian Haugen had a better strike rate he had a much stronger team alongside him. Ocokoljic has been the key man since Mytanija's return to the international scene and he finally gets the opportunity to play at the highest level in football. An international trophy of some description could push him ahead of Robin Hjik as the best Mytanar footballer ever. A ruthlessly intelligent player who drags the opposition out of shape with his movement, his finishing is clinical and he is happy to embarrass opponents with his dribbling ability even if he's on the receiving end of some rough treatment.

ST: Damien Gannot, 24, Sabrefell Athletic [NPH]
23 caps, 12 goals
Finishing third with Sabrefell Athletic represented a decent campaign for Damien Gannot, even if he wasn't the most consistent player over the course of the season. Many will simply attribute that to growing pains as he remains a solid contributor for the national team, an integral cog in the rotating pair of false nines Lev Repin utilises in this 3-4-1-2 formation. Gannot plays in a similar way to Ocokoljic, he's a striker who loves to drop deep into midfield and get involved in the build-up play, he's someone who has outstanding spatial awareness and his ability to create room for himself makes him a real danger to opposition defences. A confident finisher in the same way his father - Atletik Thessia and Sicoutimont legend - Alex Gannot was.

ST: Dejan Zgela, 27, Damogran FC [SRS]
27 caps, 10 goals
Zgela is creating quite the reputation for himself over in the Squornshelan league, ending up in the Team of the Season and as one of the runners-up in not only the Best Striker award but also the Best Foreign Player award. The Damogran FC faithful seem to have taken him to their hearts and his scoring was a big factor in them finishing 4th and qualifying for the IFCF Challengers' Cup. Zgela is a direct replacement option for both Ocokoljic and Gannot, playing in a very similar fashion and Repin values that as it means the system doesn't have to change too much if one of the two starters get injured.

ST/AMR: Kemal Gajic, 26, Falourr [NPH]
41 caps, 12 goals
Controversially picked ahead of Zlatan Andrijasevic (national team record of 16 goals in 36 games), but Repin has justified the selection as Gajic giving Mytanija a clear threat in-behind opposition defences, something which can be important when you have Ocokoljic, Gannot and Zgela all preferring to drop deep. Gajic started his career as a winger but has played up front for FK Arsika and really thrived there, part of their side which finished 4th in the Top League and runners-up in the National Cup. Gajic wasn't his team's main goal scorer (that was Squornshelan striker Juljana Chmela), but he laid on plenty of assists for his strike partner and that's a useful quality to have. His performances alerted Euran side Falourr to his abilities and they moved for him during the transfer window.

Image

Mytanija will be using the 3-4-1-2 formation to start the campaign. There is a lot of responsibility on the wing-backs in this system as they are required to join attacks and almost form a five-man attacking front with Ocokoljic, Gannot and Jasno Odonelec, along with their defensive responsibilities. Both Ocokoljic and Gannot will look drop deep into midfield areas to drag defenders out of position and Jasno Odonelec will run in behind from his number ten position. The 3-4-3 formation may also be used with Jasno Odonelec and Omer Kuhar-Arh playing as a duo of attacking midfielders slightly behind Jezdimir Ocokoljic in inside forward positions. Ocokoljic once again will be playing as a false nine to move defenders around and create space for Odonelec and Kuhar-Arh to run into. The team may also play a 4-3-3 with a back four occasionally, in which case Dino Racic would drop out and the midfield three would be Mersudin Smajic sitting with Alen Hrdaljko and Tahir Fejzuli in front of him. The front three would be the same as in the 3-4-3 formation.

If you have any questions or queries regarding Mytanija's tactics or in-game substitutions because you want to include information about them in an RP, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will endeavour to respond to clear them up.

Within three World Cup cycles Tikariot has managed to elevate itself into the upper echelons of football. After narrowly missing out for World Cup 86, having been in contention for a playoff spot until the very last day of qualification, where they went into what basically was a playoff in itself against TJUN-ia as a win would have meant Tikariot qualifying for the final playoffs, their World Cup 87 campaign seemed doomed from the beginning, having been drawn into one group with Vilita, Newmanistan, Tequilo and Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom, but they qualified for the playoff stage, only one point behind favourites and group winners Vilita, where they beat Huayramarca to qualify for a World Cup for the first time in their history. Here they managed to remain unbeaten during the group stage, qualifying for the Round of 16 as group winners ahead of ultimate World Cup winners Nephara, where they ultimately lost against Farfadillis, but they definitely left a lasting impression during this run with their very offense minded football! For WCQ88 the pressure was even higher, with them having advanced into pot 2 and in a dramatic finish they managed to reach the playoffs once more, snatching the ticket away from Kohnhead on the last match day, sending them into a two-leg tie with Drawkland where they remained "victorious" with two draws, but the higher number of away goals. The group stage was slightly less glorious, seeing them lose the first two games, but a win in the last game secured them at least three points.

The same the fans of the senior team, the fans of the Owlets also deserve particular mentioning. Not only are they renowned for their chants, but they are also bringing the Thunder Clap (Click here for example) to the stadium, something that the players join in as a pre-game ritual that has left an impression on the opponents and opposing fans more than once (OOC: similar to the Haka of the New Zealand All Blacks). The players will form a triangle near the kick off circle and lift their arms, which the fans do as well. Then a lone drum will start to signal the rhythm and both players and fans alike will move in unison, each clap accompanied with a loud cry, the claps (and cries) speeding up, creating an overwhelming sense of impending doom.

Stuart Ekstrom - 50 Image
Running the traditional 4-3-3 setup, Ekstrom has been known to nominate players based on the current form instead of just historic merit, which has resulted in young, little capped players getting opportunities even in big tournaments, if their form places them over established players. While the 4-3-3 is the established system, Ekstrom also puts big emphasis on flexibility and fluidity, allowing for the full backs to push forward or the wingers to fall back to create a numeric advantage and either quell opponents' advances or overwhelm them in the play forward. Tactically well educated players are very important in his system as he allows his players a certain degree of freedom on the pitch as well, such as the wingers switching sides or the full backs overlapping the wingers in order to remain unpredictable for opponents and create holes other players can dive into and pull apart the opposing defense.

CF Hamish Stainthorpe 21 Dhun Lagarr FC TKT 12 4/3
RW Adrian Grimaud 26 Port Tacassam FC TKT 41 15/8

Merson has truly established himself as the clear number one goalie with outstanding performances for his Banijan club Kitara AA and he has taken over the captain's armband from Rory McNair, leading from the back. In the centre back position Atamai Tameifuma finally seems to have overcome his injury problems and is emerging more and more as a true leader, physically strong, a force in aerial combat and while technically not the most sound player, he still has the capability of opening play with strong long diagonal passes out of defense to initiate counter attacks. On his side Caleb McKinley has also established himself as one of the TPL's strongest defensive options, as an excellent counterpart to Tameifuma's physical presence he is defensively very sound as well, but adds more speed and technical finesse into the Tikariotian defense, which makes them a bit of a yin and yang in central defense.

On the outside of the defensive quartet, Kelvin Rowley has emerged as one of the top left backs of the league, with tremendous speed, a great eye for his team mates and a strong left foot that can both strike deadly crosses from the goalline and long passes while using his speed to cover space and run off attackers. His counterpart Anil Al Hak is the oldest of the starting eleven, together with Merson, and while he cannot match Rowley's speed, his athleticism and positioning more than make up for it. He is known for his excellent timing for tackles and despite his more physical play also composure, which has continuously kept him in the starting position of both Port Tacassam and the national team for years now.

In midfield Celyn Monaghan has been chosen as starter by Stuart Ekstrom and while his offensive numbers have suffered this season so far, he has tremendously grown as grand orchestrator in the midfield of Oriannor, playing in a more defensive role, but now legitimately being seen as the natural successor to McNair with his strong defensive play, using both positioning and tackling to undermine opposing offensive efforts and immediately switching Tikariot into offense mode by re-distributing the ball quickly and efficiently. This will allow Tikariot City FC duo Parris Langley and Dairon Noles to focus more on their offensive roles, with especially Langley enjoying an immensely strong season in the league so far both in league-leading assists and supplemental goals while Noles is growing more and more into an offensive threat that will attempt to go for goal at any given opportunity.

The forward three are among the finest Rushmore has to offer with wunderkind Morris Nighthorse even on the long list of the Testiculos for the first time, fast, technically strong and with a knack to score goals out of nowhere, Hamish Stainthorpe gloriously rebounding after an injury plagued last season for Dhun Lagarr, leading the league with eleven goals in 14 games so far, being absolutely lethal in the box with his strong physique and technique combining into an absolute nightmare for opposing defenders and finally Adrian Grimaud also having found his scoring touch again, but more than just that he also has been able to utilize his speed and agility better now to work as a set-up player that can attract the ball and then lay it off for a better positioned colleague to take advantage and score.

LW Daelin McGlinchey 25 Xanark City TKT 0 0/0
CF Gary Conway 21 Miruan City TKT 7 0/0
RW Antti Perkkanen 23 Kingsbury United TMB 4 1/3

In goal, Colt Skirving has been one of the main reasons why the Blades have been able to confirm their top-third position in the league, outperforming the likes of Vincent Litman or Malachai Morgenstern to establish himself as number two keeper at least for the time being, while uncapped Daniel Bangoura is a big reason why Xanark City have been overperforming as a newly promoted side and while he is unlikely to see any playing time, he can gather some important experience with the national team. In defense some have been surprised to see Jean-Aniel Sirois only as back-up, but with Rowley's extremely strong season so far, the TCFC leftback is "only" backup, but in reality this just means that Ekstrom has an extremely strong player to fall back on in case something goes on with Rowley, while young Duke Waltham, Rowley's teammate at Oriannor, also is part of why the Mountaineers have not conceded a single goal at home in eight games so far. For centre backs, Stian Farnsrud or McKinley was almost a toss-up as both are similar player types and both have been in form for both team and country, so they can be interchanged without any drop-off in quality, with McKinley having a bit of an edge for stronger offensive play. Eric Ongaro is another of the revelations of the season for Oriannor so far, while technically only backup to the established duo of Arceneaux and Esnáider, he is considered the future of Tikariotian centre backs, being groomed as successor to Esnáider, physically strong, a propensity to (fair) monster tackles and also a very strong aerial presence.

The only reason why Nicholas van Haar from league leaders Miruan City is only considered backup on paper is that Parris Langley so far has had an even stronger season, which gives Ekstrom the luxury problem of having to choose from two strong players in outstanding form. Callum Usher after his move to Oberour Ar Moro is seen as strongest backup to Monaghan, still very physical and at times abrasive, his only real downside is the constant risk of getting carded, but his efficiency cannot be doubted for one moment, similar to Finbar McLoughlin out right, whose recent transfer to Nepharan Belgrave shows the talent he undeniably possesses together with a strong pull towards goal.

Offensively, Ekstrom still has the problem of an overabundance of strong players, which is a nice problem to have, and Gary Conway's transfer to Miruan has definitely revived his offensive power and if it was not for Hamish Stainthorpe exploding as centre forward, he would have been the surefire number one central strikers, but Stainthorpe's stronger record in the national team also has relegated Conway to the bench for now, but experts are sure that Conway will also get his playing time during the World Cup. On the wings, Antti Perkkanen's performances in Tumbra and the Copa Rushmori have landed him the number one backup position on the wings over names like Sheffield, Fredriksson or Segura, performing very well as both starter and off the bench, while his counterpart Daelin McGlinchey from Xanark City is one of the offensive revelations of the season so far, showing a remarkable balance between pull towards goal and great tactical acumen to spot a better positioned player, making him one of the league leaders in assists in the season so far.

South Newlandian Roster
Image

World Cup 89

Unbelievably, South Newlandia is hosting the World Cup.
After successful qualifications in the two cycles before, the Elephants are taking the other road to the finals in this cycle, with the team of Robert Wolverine having home advantage this time. Together with Tikariot, the nation they’ve previously successfully hosted baseball things with, the South Newlandian team will also receive a shortcut to the first pot, despite being ranked “only” 24th. Robert Wolverine, in his fifth cycle of coaching this team, has selected 23 players for the Finals.

Coaching team:
Head Coach: Robert Wolverine (52)
Assistant Coach: Todd Ingolffson (68)
Goalkeeper Coach: Matthias Boyle (48)
Athletic Coach: Josef Salazar (33)

The coaching team is a familiar squad; Wolverine is still going strong since BoF72, and Ingolffson has been with the group for six years as well. They’ll continue running the 4-4-2 diamond we all know of the Elephants, slightly on the defensive side, you know how it is.

Expected starting eleven:

GK: Mikhail Trischuk (34) Libertas Bergheim (Savojarna) CAPTAIN
Previous tournaments (bold for starter): BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Mikhail Trischuk is the captain of the team, and he is one of the most important reasons the team is where they are today. His numerous saves have helped the team countless times, and his abilities as a captain are also in high regard. At 30, his career might already be past its peak, but there is no reason why he shouldn’t be playing for a few more years at least. On good days, he can frustrate entire offenses, on bad ones; he might take a few goals. He moved to Libertas Bergheim in one of the best leagues of the multiverse some years ago, and after a few good seasons, age seems to only slowly catch up to him, with him recently making an appearance on the Testículos longlist. Trischuk remains one of the stars and the leader of this team, and it’s hard to imagine a time post-Trischuk.

LB: Dhruv Roy (32) Crossroads (Chromatika)
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Roy is another star player and Testículos longlisted player on this squad, and the left side of the defense tends to be stronger mostly thanks to him. He’s also not an infrequent threat up front, and can often be dangerous especially after corners. He’s positioned himself well with Crossroads, and is considered the leader of this defense.

CB: Tommy Anderson (29) Couziers-Olympiques (Ko-oren)
Image

Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Anderson has locked up the starting role in the defense in recent years, and the pure defender is likely the best tackler on this team. It’s going to be hard to get past him for scoring opportunities, although he’s one of the more frequently carded players, which, as a whole, South Newlandians rarely are. His recently strong seasons earned him a spot on the Testículos longlist.

CB: Philip Gurero (30) Kohnhead City FC (Kohnhead)
Previous tournaments: WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Gurero, despite the late start to his career, has established himself as a great defender in Kohnhead, and has been a mainstay of the Elephants since. He’s gained lots of experience, but with age, his offensive abilities are slowly in decline.

RB/CB: Filip Barker (31) Cranequin Wanderers (Nephara)
Previous tournaments: WC87, WC88
Barker is another player who only had his career take off late, but after solid play in Tikariot, he managed to land a spot in Nephara, so he definitely can’t be bad. Despite the occasional red card, he managed to largely patch up a once weak right defensive side.

DM: Kevin Mohamed (28) Bikarish (Poafmersia)
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
The long-time player on the Nagelti Rovers (Jeckland) has moved on to Poafmersia, and despite not really impressing there either, he’s going to be back on the squad for South Newlandia. This position is typically a weak-spot for the Elephants, and there doesn’t seem to be any help on the way soon – for now, Mohamed will do a decent enough job.

LM: Corban Green (27) Rockridge Phoenix (Brenecia) CORNERS
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Green is the youngest of the best South Newlandian players, at age 27. Despite this, he’s very experienced, and that has earned him a sizable contract in Brenecia. His biggest weakness is being very prone to injury, to the point where his knee is broken more often that not, which may have been one of the factors keeping him out of a permanent starting spot with the Phoenix. When he’s healthy, he’s elite, but that’s far too rarely the case. Even now, his knee doesn’t appear to be 100% operational, but it should be close enough.

RM: Marcus Young (26) Avenida Leal (Farfadillis)
Previous tournaments: WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
After sitting on the bench behind McMora for long, Young has finally ascended to the starting role in the team. He’s been really solid for one of the best teams in the Shango-Fogoa Premier League, including multiple Challengers Cup trips, and he can really play. Unbelievably, he’s the second youngest player on this team.

AM: Bentley Levy (25) Porter City (Kohnhead)
Previous tournaments: none
The only real surprise on this team was elevating Levy to the starting role. The youngest player on the Elephants 23-man roster has been tearing it up with Porter City recently, and he’s earned a start in the team, but with very limited international experience, it’s hard to know what to make of him.

ST: Brandon Irving (29) Urbizania Wanderers (Astograth) FREE KICKS
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Only two players have ever scored in a World Cup Finals match for South Newlandia, and Irving is responsible for 2 of 3 such goals. Despite some inconsistencies for his club teams, mediocrity with Barnley before moving on to Astograth for a (tied) South Newlandian record 6 million, his highs are as high as few other players, much less South Newlandian ones – getting there is the problem.

ST: Simon McCabe (37) Real Dawson (Kohnhead) PENALTIES
Previous tournaments: WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
They called him too old, washed up, with no real future for this team. McCabe has proved the doubters wrong after a long time of club mediocrity, having risen from the ashes by winning the golden boot in Kohnhead with Real. Wolverine had no chance but to bring him back, but different to some other players, McCabe is not only questionable when it comes to his return to the big stage. He’s openly announced that he intends to retire from international play after this World Cup, preferably after fulfilling his dream of finally scoring a goal in the Finals.

Bench:

GK: Rufus Rigby (28) Barnley FC (Kohnhead)
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Some joke that Rigby will still back up Trischuk when he’s 40, and that might be closer to the truth than you think. When Trischuk sustained an injury during WCQ88, Rigby stepped in, performing well but not as well as Trischuk, who was promptly back ahead of him for the Finals.

GK: Olly Evans (28) Korsbach (Graintfjall)
Previous tournaments: WC88
Evans is back as the third-string goalkeeper following a phenomenal season in Graintfjall. He’ll be a solid option in absolute emergencies, but is not expected to see the field. He did twice in WCQ88, which went okay-ish.

LB: Jet McBride (27) Urrheddiao (Chromatika)
Previous tournaments: none
A lot of players have backed up Roy over the years, but McBride might get the closest to eventually getting the job full-time. He’s been awesome in Chromatika, and he’s five years younger than Roy, so he’ll probably see the field a couple of times in this World Cup. He’s on the roster the first time, having had trouble breaking into the only available spot behind Roy on a competitive position.

CB: Mike Sloah (30) Ituraitz FC (Astograth)
Previous tournaments: WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Sloah has been a backup on this position for a while, amassing a couple of appearances, but he was never quite able to break into the starting 11. He doesn’t seem to be doing too well in Astograth, but he has a great eye for the game, able to spot things practically before they happen.

CB: Jeffrey Scott (28) Meriador FC (Tikariot)
Previous tournaments: none
Scott is another player not seen before on these rosters, but he’s earned a spot by playing really well in Tikariot. When you’re the fourth or fifth option at CB, you’re likely not expecting much playing time, but he might see the field once or twice if he’s lucky.

RB: Hunter Burnser (28) Conton FC (Sylestone)
Previous tournaments: none
Burnser has broken into this team, and no one really knows why. He’s been okay with Conton, but come on. Anyway, that’s why Barker is playing at Right Back again. No one else in South Newlandia can play that position well.

LM: Rex Casey (27) Suttonville (Eura)
Previous tournaments: none
We’re not sure where he’s been hiding, but he’s been phenomenal in Eura and hardly anyone has taken notice yet. Don’t be surprised if Casey makes an appearance, this guy is really good, and we’ll probably figure out why soon.

RM: Patrick McMora (30) Branvon CD (Ko-oren)
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
McMora used to be one of the stars of this squad, appearing nearly every match, but age seems to be catching up to him fast. He’s gone from star on the Walstreim Lions to fighting (and failing) to get a starting spot on a Ko-orenite relegation contender. It’s not been pretty.

RM: Kaylem Knight (29) Stanmorn FC (Flavovespia)
Previous tournaments: none
This is who Wolverine chose to bring along instead of a second defensive midfielder. He’s been on the international team of the year in Flavovespia, and that’s sufficient qualification to be better than any defensive midfielder except maybe Tom Burton.

AM: Finnley Wallis (32) Cyrene Bay (Oberour Ar Moro)
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Wallis used to be a star as well, but his recent years haven’t been great, and a move to Oberour Ar Moro for a (tied) South Newlandian record sum of 6 million hasn’t working out too well either. However, depending on how Levy works out, Wallis might be right back in the fray in the second game.

ST: Bjorn Cohen (27) Marque (Brenecia)
Previous tournaments: BoF72, WCQ85, CoH77, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Cohen, injury prone as he may be, is the most likely player to succeed McCabe after the tournament. Even when he’s not starting for the Brenecian top team, he’s a very solid player, and especially dangerous when coming on in a substitution.

ST: Michael Glossman (32) Kristina Galaxy (Poafmersia)
Previous tournaments: CoH77, WCQ86, CoH78, WC87, WC88
Glossman used to have a reputation for sinking whatever club he is on. Galaxy seems to be fine for now, but they shouldn’t stop being worried too soon. He’s a good player, but not good enough to return to the starting eleven at this point anymore.

Reserves (not part of 23-man roster):

GK: Kenneth Harris (27) Port Tacassam FC (Tikariot)
LB: Archer Nguyen (26) Ancarea FC (Tikariot)
CB: Jay-Jay Driscoll (25) Buffalo Niagara FC (Eshialand)
CB: Richard Hermann (28) Trimidau Naksa (Poafmersia)
DM: Tom Burton (25) Folte (Graintfjall)
LM: Donald Lancaster (28) Armada Sovran (Pyazhnaya)
RM: Mo Moss (27) La Querida (Farfadillis)
AM: Abdurahman Bishop (29) Porto Nowi OR (Zeta Reka and Hügeltaldom)
AM: Alexander Lyon (23) Bradwell Saints (Krytenia)
AM: Dean Holcomb (24) Siasari (Eraman)
ST: Reid Gomez (22) St. John's Arsenal (Quebec and Shingoryeo)

Schedule:
Game 1: (opening match of WC89) South Newlandia – Brenecia (Elephant Valley)
Game 2: South Newlandia – Ethane (Ratzupalfu)
Game 3: South Newlandia – Squidroidia (New Colk)
