The Ceylonese Bush War
Ah, Sri Lanka.
A lush land, filled with beautiful forests, flowing rivers, a stunning landscape, and Improvised Explosive Devices.
The coast of the Island contains surfing areas, resorts, and sunny beaches, along with remarkable city skylines, but in the center of the island, a storm is brewing. For years, the island has been locked in a state of instability, conjoined at the waist to the dictatorial National Indian State regime. That was, until recently.
Through a combination of both local and South Americanastan Defense Force (SADF) efforts, the island was liberated recently, with the SADF triumphantly rolling into Colombo. However, once the South Indian Army had been cleared out, there was no one left to fight but each other. Shortly after the fall of Colombo and South Indian withdrawal, the SADF proclaimed the Republic of Ceylon, conglomerating the Democratic militias into the Ceylon Security Forces. Elections would be held a week later.
The flag of the Republic of Ceylon. the Green represents the area's lush landscape, Blue represents stability, the Wreath and Olive Branch represent peace, while the red represents the blood spilled to get it.
It was only 3 days before the elections when it was announced that the right to vote would require property ownership, a political move targeted to prevent a Communist/Nationalist victory. The Democratic Front of Ceylon (DFC) would win 75% of the vote, earning them 30 of the 40 Parliamentary seats and installing Prime Minister Mohamed Akithya to lead the country.
The flag of the National Front. The Yellow represents the will of the people, while the Red represents the blood of the upper class. The Lion is a traditional symbol of Sri Lanka, and the star represents one united state.
Nearly as soon as this was announced, however, the Communists and Nationalists factions began arming themselves in the central provinces of the Republic. An uneasy standoff commenced between SADF/CSF forces and the Communists and Nationalists, who had control of the central areas of Sri Lanka. The Nationalists posed the largest threat, but the Communists were the most aggressive. SADF forces set up outposts around the country in conjunction with the CSF around the country, dividing their organization into 5 Districts.
-Hurricane District, Central Ceylon, SADF Operations
-Green Zone, Colombo, CSF Operations
-Banana District, surrounding Green Zone, SADF/CSF Operations
-Sterling District, Northern Ceylon, CSF Operations
-Epsilon District, Southern Ceylon, SADF/CSF Joint Operation
Tensions came to head when a supply convoy on the Colombo-Kandy Road was ambushed by Communist forces, and after heavy fighting, the Communist forces retreated due to machine gun fire, leaving three SADF soldiers wounded and 2 Communists captured. The next day, the Republic of Ceylon and South Americanastan declared a state of hostilities with the insurgents. With the outbreak of hostilities, a large amount of Democratics left to join the insurgents, or protested in the streets of Colombo. Soon after, most of the Communist forces would be destroyed in the Battle of Highway A26, in which the Communists main base was raided by a fireforce from the 1st Brigade, Light Infantry, and the ensuing Communist ambush on the withdrawing SADF forces cost many Communist lives, and left many members of the 1BLI wounded.
After the Battle of Highway A26, the Communists and National Army merged into the National Front, a united Guerrilla force opposed to the Republic of Ceylon. The deserting Democratics, now known as the Constitutionalists, decided not to join due to ideological differences.
The National Front began carpeting the major highways out of Colombo and Kandy with Improvised Explosive Devices, meant to destroy any convoys that attempted to make it out of either city, and ambushed any surviving vehicles or soldiers. The IEDs, however, ended up destroying civilian vehicles instead of the intended military targets, resulting in the popularity of the National Front plummeting, and a rift forming between the Contitutionalists and the NF. In response, the SADF deployed Mine Clearing Armored Vehicles (MCAV) to clear the IEDs. With the deaths of civilians and outbreak of Total War, the Bush War has now escalated to something much more than the original policing operation.
