Despite strong opposition from People's Front as well as the conservative faction of the ruling National Party, Parliament has passed a resolution to allow up to 5,000 at-risk Afghanistani refugees to resettle in Drongonia over the next five years in an unprecedented shakeup of the nation's refugee quota.

Presently, just 250 refugees are accepted into Drongonia per year. This number was previously as high as 5000, but was drastically reduced when Prime Minister English and the National Party came to power in 2017. Additionally, the Ministry of Immigration recently reported that just 12% of all refugees allowed entry into Drongonia since 2018 are from the "Middle East and North Africa" geographic area, with the vast majority being White South African farmers. Additionally, the intake of refugees has been halted by the Government, citing COVID-related concerns.

This, however, is set to change under the new Labour-proposed plan which passed its third reading in Parliament today. The radical plan would raise the refugee quota to 1,500 per year for the next five years, with 1,000 of those refugees being from Afghanistan. The plan also includes rules designed to specifically cater to those most at risk of oppression from the Taliban. Particular at-risk groups mentioned in the new plan are "outspoken women", "anti-Taliban activists", "any individuals who assisted Western nations during the Afghanistan campaign" and "LGBTQ+ individuals". The plan, officially titled as the Refugee Resettlement Bill 2021, passed its third Parliamentary reading 64-56, with its passage owing to several National MPs "going rogue" to vote in favour of the Bill.

Labour leader Sarah Ellice appeared elated as she talked to media outside Parliament today, proclaiming that the passage of this legislation "is a massive win for human rights in both Afghanistan and Drongonia, particularly for vulnerable women and LGBTQ+ people who are being denied the basic right to be who they are." Prime Minister Bill English, who voted against the plan, said in a statement that he was "...shocked and disappointment that my colleagues in the House would vote for legislation designed to completely unwind integral parts of our immigration and security reforms."

Critics of the plan have been quick to highlight that there are no specific provisions pertaining to how the Drongonian Government will receive refugees from Afghanistan, as it is unlikely that the governing Taliban will allow the potential refugees to peacefully leave the country of their own accord, even to board diplomatic flights. Additionally, the shared South Pacific Embassy, where Drongonia's diplomats were located, was evacuated shortly after the US began its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan a fortnight ago.

The shared South Pacific Embassy housed diplomats from Drongonia, Cancolastan, Norcott, New Zealand, Australia and Aushweizland but has been abandoned. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not responded to an Official Information Act request from TVDG regarding the potential financial and security costs of equipment and intelligence information left behind during the evacuation. Additionally, the Ministry did not respond to a request for comment regarding the possibility of further emergency evacuations in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Bill English, flanked by Minister of Health Leah Driver, Deputy Prime Minister Simon Baker and members of the Ministry of Health's epidemiology team, announced that "radical changes" to the way Drongonia rolls out its COVID-19 vaccinations are on the way.

The most notable change is centred around reducing the amount of online, print, physical, radio and television advertising encouraging Drongonians to be vaccinated. Figures released by the Ministry of Health last week estimate that the "Get Drongonia Vaccinated" advertising campaign has cost almost $250,000,000 since it began earlier in the year. Additionally, no further reminders will be sent to those who have yet to book their vaccination. Since the rollout, every Drongonian who has an address registered with either the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Social Services has received at least one letter urging them to get vaccinated. Those with a mobile phone number have also been sent an SMS message at least once.

As of September 28 2021, Drongonia has vaccinated just 18.7% of its population against COVID-19, with a further 9.2% of the population either being booked in via the Ministry of Health or a GP to be vaccinated or having had their initial vaccination deferred for medical reasons. This means that the majority of Drongonians will likely remain unvaccinated against COVID-19 and its variants for the foreseeable future, unless the Government changes its vaccination plans to include a wider scope of mandatory vaccination roles.

Initially, the Government had aimed to have 75% of the adult population vaccinated by Christmas, with the ultimate 85% target aimed to be reached near St. Patrick's Day 2022. As of today, the Government has abandoned the targets and is instead urging individuals who believe themselves to be at risk of COVID, or who would simply like to be vaccinated, to come forward and book an appointment at their a vaccination centre or their local General Practitioner.

Drongonia's vaccine rollout has been labelled by opposition parties as "a complete failure", with Labour's Sarah Ellice saying that the rollout was "a complete joke." Ellice went on to tell host of NRD's morning show, Michael Wilson, that "...it [the vaccine] should have been mandatory from the start. Less than 30% vaccination against a deadly virus, where we're using a thoroughly tested vaccine, is simply unacceptable and I implore the Government to change its stance and pull anti-vaxxers into line." It is understood that Ellice has not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The single-dose Drongonia-developed nCOV-UCR vaccine has a refrigerated shelf life of up to six months, meaning that the Government will soon be forced to make a decision regarding what to do with the excess doses that GPs and vaccination centres are currently holding on to. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Samantha Trapp said in a statement released today that "it seems likely that the unused vaccines will make their way into the Pacific Islands, where they'll almost certain to be used before they expire."

THE GOVERNMENT CELEBRATES THE VICTORY OF STATE ATHEISM
Fewer and fewer ponies believe in the deification of the Alicorn Princesses. The government declares: "An excellent goal for the complete liberation of the country".

An old Anti-Princess Mural

Great celebrations took place in the halls of the Supreme Soviet today. In fact, the National Census Office has confirmed that a large part of the population of Stalliongrad has stopped believing in the deification of the former rulers of Severnaya: Princess Celestia and Princess Luna.

Although the ponies of Stalliongrad no longer regarded the two princesses as their rulers after the Revolution, many continued to view them in a form of strange deification that still seems to plague the lands of Equestria.
For many years, in fact, this has been a problem that has been debated many times in the leadership of the Stalliongradian Communist Party and several proposals have been considered to eradicate these old superstitions. From using the iron fist, proposed by Comrade Sinister Serov, to the increase in funds for school education and the intensive teaching of state atheism, wanted by Comrade Altidiya Revoltsova. The latter seems to have prevailed thanks to the activity of Comrade Altidiya Revoltsova within the Supreme Soviet. Activity that has doubled since she was appointed General Secretary of the Party.

Reached by the reporters, Comrade General Secretary said: "I am happy that many more of our comrades have finally been able to open their eyes and abandon the old Equestrian stories. But I am even happier to show that patience pays off and extreme positions have not been used to show the Truth of Socialism.
With 98% of the Stalliongradian population we have achieved another goal left to us by Caramel Marks. The atheization of the proletarian state, in fact, is necessary if we want to stop depending, even if only mentally, on old millenary legends. Because only in this way can each of us make their own egalitarian contribution to build Socialism and help in the World Revolution".
