Democracy? O Ja!(A Norwegian Election Thread)

Yes, it's another one of these, but Norway gets some attention. It's that time of four years again when Norwegians head off to the polls(unlike most other parliamentary states, Norway has clearly fixed terms). Currently, Norway has a minority government led by the Conservatives under Erna Solberg alongside the Liberals and the Christian Democrats. The Progress Party was part of it until early in annus horribilis2020, when they withdrew over Solberg's decision to repatriate a woman and her children back to Norway despite having links to Daesh. SInce then, it's been a precarious minority, but since the Storting can't be dissolved until a term is up, they've managed to get by. There were supposed to be changes to the Storting, but COVID basically derailed all plans for them. So the Storting will be decided on Monday, September 13. Currently, the polls show both Labour and the COnservatives down with the Centre Party, Socialist Left, and even the Red Party making gains.

So, here's how it'll go down. There are 169 seats up for grabs in 19 multi-member constituencies(Norway's counties). The country uses Closed-list Norwegian Sainte-Laguë PR with a 4% threshold. Now to meet the parties:

Labour(Ap) led by Jonas Gahr Støre: Centre-left, Social Democratic

Conservatives(H) led by current PM Erna Solberg: Centre-right, Liberal Conservative, Pro-Europe

Centre Party(Sp) led by Trygve Slagsvold Vedum: Centre, Agrarian, Eurosceptic, Economic Nationalist, Christian Humanist

Progress Party(FrP) led by Sylvi Listhaug: Right Wing, Libertarian, National Conservative, Right Populist

Socialist Left(SV) led by Audun Lysbakken: Left Wing, Democratic Socialist, Republican, Eurosceptic, Eco-Socialist

Red Party(R) led by Bjørnar Moxnes: Left to Far Left, Communist, Marxist, Hard Eurosceptic, Revolutionary Democratic Socialist, Republican

Green Party(MDG) led by Une Aina Bastholm: Centre-left, Green Policy

Christian Democrats(KrF) led by Kjell Ingolf Ropstad: Centre to Centre-right, Christian Democratic, Pro-Monarchy, Social Conservative

Liberals(V) led by Guri Melby: Centre, Social Liberal, Green Liberal, Republican, Pro-Europe

So, NSG, pick your herring and let us know who you support. Speaking personally, I'll go for the SV seeing as how Norway's already out of the EU and therefore won't see damage by remaining out of it(not in the same way as secession would lead to, anyway).

The power cable concern has to do with whether or not Norway should be more integrated with the European Grid, which a lot of Norwegians don't want because it means possibly closing Norway's coal-fired plants, highly energy bills, and another line for the EU to snare them with. Norway's not in the EU and a lot of people want to keep it that way.

Basically, high school students who are absent from over 10% of a class, won't receive a final grade in that class. This rule has been in place for a few years now, and it's lowered absentee-rates. On the other hand, it can become a trap for pupils with mental issues or social challenges, and arguments are made that it should not be a hard rule which cannot take individual reasons and differences into account.

I feel a left-leaning coalition could be beneficial after nearly a decade of right-wing governance. They may try to mitigate Norway's oil dependency, high cost of living, and growing inequality.

With countries like Norway, where so many parties are represented, I tend to just look at it in terms of which ideological partners are moving into the governing coalition.

- whether the center-left coalition will be able to form a majority government, or if they will have to make do with a minority government

- which parties will make up the next governing coalition, in addition to AP (and which will support the next government)

- How many representatives the smaller parties will get, how much influence they will get in the next governing coalition, and which political areas they will demand a say in.

I think that a red-green coalition will happen. It's been done before between Labour, Centre and Socialist Left and they'd probably do it again with the addition of the Greens if need be. The Red Party would be a last ditch effort if a L-C-SL-G coalition somehow doesn't have a majority, but I think they would at least be able to provide support for the government.

Personally, I support the Socialist Left Party and Red Party.

Støre also threatens no confidence in October if Solberg's government refuses to extend COVID-related unemployment benefits before they expire on October 1

We're now only one week away from the election, so here's my take on next week.

I know that most analysts are saying that Solberg's tenure has effectively come to an end, and given the numbers and the new, albeit small scandals about the KrF leader the debate over whether privitasation of elderly care was to blame for COVID deaths, I think we'll see a Labour-led government with the Liberals, Socialist Left, and Greens forming the rest of the coalition.
