The 2020s. A decade set to be nightmarish and a turning point in the history of humanity. Climate Change is the existential threat that must urgently be tackled in this decade, and humanity must learn to cope with the constantly growing population that does not look likely to slow down let alone stop growing anytime soon.

In Asia, the Chinese Dragon is emerging as the regional hegemon, pushing regional nations to choose sides between them and the West while internally the regime battles against resistance in Hong Kong and ethnic tension in the far West, while also pushing claims on Taiwan, stoking regional flames. In India, the nation is dealing with religious unrest and rapid economic growth and modernization as well as increasing tension along the border with Pakistan, particularly in the Kashmir Region. Japan has continued to cause consternation with its neighbors after proudly displaying the Rising Sun flag at the Tokyo Olympics.

In Europe, Euroskepticism is on the rise in many European nations. The successful Brexit referendum led to the charge showing Euroskeptics all across the continent that leaving was possible. In Spain regional tensions threaten to explode between Madrid and Barcelona while Poland and the Visegrad Group continue to openly defy the EU.

In the Middle East, tensions between Israel and Iran are at an all-time high. Adding to this is the emerging regional cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In Yemen, the civil war still burns as a testing ground for this regional cold war.

In Africa, ethnic and religious tensions pose a danger all over the continent. In the Congo, warlords fight over land and resources like coltan offering fortunes on the international market. In the Saraha and Sahel regions, remnants of ISIS and other organizations ravage the land and people. Ethiopia and Egypt are at each other's throats over the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam by Ethiopia. Yet there are lights of hope that still sparkle.

In North America, Canada is dealing with ever-increasing political divides much like the US to the South. Inside the US tensions between Republicans and Democrats have never seemed worse. In Mexico, the Cartels fight hard against the central government in Mexico City their corruption touches most parts of the nation.

In Latin America, the dictator Nicholas Maduro still clings to power even as his position is contested by Juan Guaidó. In Colombia, an unstable peace agreement official holds peace between the government and FARC.

How will the nations of the world tackle these issues? How will their pasts define their future, which nations will come out on top during this decade, and how will future generations remember this critical decade?

In this roleplay, you will take the helm of the nation of your choice. You have the ability to change the history of your nation from 1991 onwards within realism and with a few major event exceptions as well as anything states in the OP or other applications.

It was Roland Wilkerson’s first official day as President of the United States and already he had a lot on his plate. The Forces Cooperation Agreement between the US and the USSR was due for renegotiation and the Soviets were making noises about not renewing it without a demonstration of commitment from the West. The trade war with the Chinese was continuing to hurt US jobs. The peace deal with the Taliban was not making the headway many had hoped it would. And the nearly four months of riots in the summer of 2020 had shone a spotlight on the issues of police use of force in many cities around the United States. And then there was the laundry list of campaign promises that Wilkerson had made. Statehood for several US territories, expanding US energy independence, reforming the criminal justice system, repairing US relations with foreign allies, and strengthening the United States in cooperation with its neighbors.

Wilkerson leaned back in his chair behind the Resolute Desk and rubbed his eyes. It had all sounded so simple as he made the promises on the campaign trail. Even when he’d known that his promises would be difficult to implement, he’d been surprised by how easy they sounded when he spoke them aloud. Statehood for Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands sounded incredibly easy but required broad support in Congress and the cooperation of the territorial governments to reorganize them into proper states. Special elections would need to be held to elect Senators and Representatives from those states and renovations made to the Capitol Building to provide them places to sit during debates and votes and offices from which to work. And yet none of that came to mind when you just voiced the idea of statehood.
Of course, Wilkerson was certain he could get enough support in Congress for Guam and Puerto Rico to become states. There was enough support in both territories for that change to justify it. But that would then also require an actual discussion about statehood for D.C. and he wasn’t sure he could get enough support for that one. Even if he could, it would be a hard won fight that would require enough compromises that he might not be able to get other things passed. And there was everything else he wanted to do.
Criminal Justice Reform was something that was sorely needed, especially in the light of events from the previous administration.

Wilkerson sat up abruptly. That’s it, he thought. Criminal Justice Reform was the one thing that most Americans could agree upon and it was something that he could already start on. The House had passed a Marijuana decriminalization bill back in December but he could get out ahead of this thing and make waves immediately with an executive order. He drafted two orders. One would order all Federal law enforcement officers and Federal judges and attorneys to ignore marijuana possession, sale, distribution, and transportation when seeking to charge offenders. The other would commute the sentences of prisoners who had been convicted of possessing or trafficking marijuana. This wouldn’t free that many people, since it would only really impact federal agencies. But, hopefully, it would get the ball rolling and encourage Congress to make progress on decriminalization legislation. Simultaneously, it would start progress on one of his campaign promises.

He sat back again after having written the orders to consider other needed tasks. The Status of Forces Agreement with the USSR which governed US and USSR force interactions and their cooperation in the War on Terror was due for renegotiation this year and his predecessors had done their damndest to piss the Soviets off in that regard. The Soviet Ambassador had made sure a letter was presented to him on this, his first day on the job, clarifying the Soviet position that the US force drawdowns in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hotspots were violations of the Agreement and indicated a lack of commitment from the United States to ending the threat of global terrorism. Or something roughly to that effect. He thought for a moment. The first step would definitely need to be a propaganda effort. Something to show both the American and Soviet peoples that they were still like minded and friendly nations. A series of meetings with the Soviet president would serve that end nicely and would let Wilkerson get the measure of the man. It had been Wilkerson’s experience that the only way one could ever know if a person was indeed trustworthy was to meet them in person in an informal setting. A relaxed individual was more honest than one who knew that eyes rested upon them.

He leaned forward and typed out a brief letter inviting the Soviet president to Washington for preliminary talks. With any luck, he could salvage the relationship with the Soviets without creating a political situation that was untenable. But, then again, luck wasn’t known for being a reliable ally.

Kabul River
Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan

Approximately two dozen military aged males walked along a dirt path towards the Kabul River. The men wore the typical garb of Afghan tribesmen, distinguished only by their heavy armament. RPGs, AKs, RPKs, and RPDs were slung over their shoulders. Grenades, magazines, and ammunition belts were carried over their shoulders or clipped to harnesses. From ground level, they would be difficult to see in the darkness. But to the thermal imaging camera of the Avenger drone 10,000 meters above them, they were as clear as if they were standing in an open field.

The drone’s pilot tracked the column as they continued walking along the path and determined that the column was likely headed for the Darunta Dam. If they made it, they would probably attempt to damage the dam, cutting power to several villages and cities, including Jalalabad. A request was sent up the chain for clearance to engage. It took nearly half an hour for a decision to be made, with the pilot tracking the column the entire time. They were barely a mile and a half from Darunta when clearance was received.

To the Afghan men walking down the path, nothing was out of the ordinary. The cool, night air was still, without so much as a breeze to ruffle their traditional Perahan tunban dress. Even if they had looked up, they would not have seen the drone as it circled overhead, even now making the final preparations for its attack.

The Avenger’s internal weapons bay swung open and a pair of GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bombs glided silently towards their unsuspecting victims. All twenty four of these men had families. Mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, wives, sons and daughters. The drone pilot understood this but the drone didn’t not and the two bombs wouldn’t have cared even if they could know.

The bombs silently crossed the twenty kilometer horizontal distance between the drone and their target in a matter of moments. The bombs struck home with thunderous explosions that shook the immediate area.

In the air conditioned container that served as the drone’s control center, a soft voice spoke for the first time in over thirty minutes. “Positive impact. Stand-by BDA.” The drone circled back around as the smoke cleared. The same voice, soft and measured, “No heat signatures. All targets eliminated. No collateral.” With a final confirmation from headquarters, Lieutenant Grace Anderson studied the effects of her work from the safety of an air conditioned trailer on the other side of the world.

Warfare in a New Era

The end of the Cold War was supposed to be the end of the Great Power competition. It wasn’t. Instead, there was merely a delay while the Chinese built themselves into a new superpower. While the United States busied itself with counterinsurgency and nation building, allowing its conventional warfighting capabilities to fade, the Chinese did the opposite, developing a variety of new capabilities to counter America’s own conventional war machine. It wouldn’t be until the waning years of the Obama presidency in 2015 and 2016 that peer and near-peer conflict would once again become central to US military thinking.

But what does warfare look like now? How does one prepare to fight a war where the battlefield is everywhere and the frontlines no longer exist? And more importantly, where will the next war begin?

Many have sought to answer the question of what warfare in the future will look like, from theorists to science fiction authors to average working people.

No one really knows the answer to that question. But the common threads involve increasing use of drones, long range precision artillery systems, increased competition in space, the militarization of the web, and a growing reliance on stealth technology for aircraft and other systems.

A Looming Elephant

Years of deficit spending had created a national debt of over $20 trillion dollars and a deficit of nearly $1 trillion. Key programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid were finding themselves short of cash. By most estimates, Social Security would be dry by the 2040s without immediate action. There needed to be significant changes made to the budget in the next few years and that work would need to start soon.

Among the necessities was continued modernization of the Armed Forces, adjustments in spending to other parts of the government to increase efficiency and reduce the deficit, and likely a tax increase in the short term. The problem was that most of the obvious solutions were either unpopular (such as cuts to Social Security, Welfare, and Medicare/Medicaid) or unwise given current global tensions (such as cuts to defense spending).

There would be no easy answer and no perfect solution, not for a long time. But at least work could be started and perhaps, eventually, there would be a solution.

President and General Secretariat Raul Castro took to Havana today to address the nation in front of a crowd of around 1,000 people, while dropping quite surprising, while at the same time, unsurprising news. The full transcription of his speech is below:

“Greetings, people of this great nation. I can think of nothing better to start my day than addressing you all, for what may be the last time.

“I have served Cuba since the tyrant Fulgencio Bautista was overthrown in 1959, and the glorious republic as we know it today was established. I served alongside my late, great brother Fidel, then on my own to forge a way for Cuba to reach true greatness. That vision has not yet been realized, and while I wish I could reach that vision myself, I have grown old, and am slowly becoming unfit to rule.

“It is my truest belief that Cuba now deserves younger and more valiant leadership, which brings me to my announcement: I, Raul Castro, will be resigning from my posts as President and General Secretariat effective February 5th. My replacement in both positions shall be my young entourage, Miguel Diaz Canel, who has shown a fiery willingness to bring Cuba to a golden age. I have the utmost respect for him, as he does for me, and I believe he is the best way for Cuba moving forward.

“God bless Cuba, and God bless the Revolution.”

Miguel Diaz Canel himself had this to say regarding the announcement:

“I’m very honored to be taking on this new position and opportunities, not just for myself, but for Cuba as a whole. I am flattered by Raul’s trust in me, and promise that I will not let him or Cuba down.”

President Orlov sat in his Kremlin office watching the flat-screen TV as nearly 5 thousand miles away the new US President was being sworn in. Having just been sworn in himself only ten days prior, Orlov now hoped that he would be able to work well with his new American counterpart, but for now, his focus was on a more domestic matter.

Just then one of the phones on his desk started to ring. Answering it, Orlov listened as the voice on the other end informed him that they were ready for him in the Kremlin Situation Management Room. Normally the Soviet President would handle these matters at the National Defense Management Center at the Ministry of Defense but Orlov had felt that traveling there and back would be nothing more than a waste of time.

Sitting on the runway of Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, a dark and winged silhouette sat as a few Soviet Airmen did a final check over the vehicle before giving a thumbs up and walking away and back to the control room. A moment later the engines of the Sokol Altius started up before it slowly crept started down the runway before picking up speed and lifting gently into the dark skies before banking South, a direction it would stay for a little longer than an hour.

Near Lashkargah, Helmand Province, Afghanistan
9:20 PM MST

High up in the sky, the Altius scanned the road below. Back in the USSR, a Soviet pilot sat comfortably as he gently guided the Altius through the air and kept a diligent eye on his screen. Finally, he found what he was looking for, a convoy of three pickup trucks heading away from Lashkargah. HUMINT had pegged this group as several of the higher-ups in the Helmand province’s Taliban that the coalition had been seeking for some time now. A clear priority for elimination.

Checking with the information he had on the target, and feeling certain that it was the target, the pilot turned over his shoulder and asked his CO to confirm. After a few minutes and one last call to higher-ups, the CO gave a thumbs up before the pilot calmly took a breath and pressed the trigger.

Moments later, on the ground in Helmand Province, a single, jarring explosion erupted where three trucks had once been.

President Orlov sat at his desk reading over the after-action reports from the Altius test. So far all tests had come back positive for the UAV and Orlov hoped that it would be fully operational in the armed forces relatively soon. However, the President now turned his attention to a letter that had come in during the night from the new American President, inviting Orlov to a meeting in Washington D.C.

Perhaps this one will be serious about the commitments his nation made. Orlov thought and, truly, hoped for.

Picking up his phone, Orlov to his executive secretary to send back a reply gladly accepting the American's invitation and expressing hope for continuing and growing warm relations between the two nations. Now, with that over with, another pending letter needed the President's approval before sending.

Change in North Korea

It has been nearly several months, since North Korea' leader Kim Jong-un had been seen in public or the Korean Central News Agency had broadcasted or published anything of substantial effort - all that the Global World would hear was the same thing as always. 'Everything is fine' or 'our glorious soldiers are engaging in battlefield exercises in Region X, Y or Z'. Although, despite this explanation there had been several conflicting reports delivered by several different reporters from the KCNA. Some of them reporting on how the Supreme Leader was doing fine, was occupied, touring the nation or overseeing military affairs. All of them switching between them, he or she - leading some outside observers thinking that there might be brewing some civil discontent. Considering that there was signs, sounds and even some pictures taken from space of demolished and destroyed buildings, vehicles and soldiers of the KPA fighting against other units in similar equipment. Some of them...didn't get back up or were removed, after said 'mock' battle was over.

However, on this day in particular, a date which would go down in history - was when KCNA tuned in and looking their 'chipper' attitude as always, before things went directly to the office of the Supreme Leader. Whom wasn't Kim Jong-un, but his sister Kim Yo-jong instead. The months of silence and misdirection had come to an end, as the woman in question would soon begin speaking in the tone and mannerism common in North Korea. In this in particular, she was explaining in quite detail what had happened in the months since the disappearance of Kim Jong-un: how the 'rebel' leadership had poisoned their 'great leader and her brother', on how the man known as Kim Pyong-il was in the heart of the matter. Namely, it went into the usual communist rhetoric - describing how several military officials had agitated up their dislike on her succession, how they had attempted to put a murder as leader of their great nation and how thanks to the 'bravery and sacrifice' of their men whom remained loyal to her and her people, they had emerged victorious and how the rebels would be punished according to the law.

Although - instead of stopping there and continuing the common attitude that was 'accepted' about North Korea, she would continue on. As the woman spoke on how she would be taking over things and planning several 'reforms and changes' in the upcoming months for her people and for her nation. Instead of offering small concessions and minute differences - she started out things with a literal bombshell.

"...our nation has been robbed. It has been sucked dry. It has been betrayed by those...whom had gotten everything and gave us nothing! The policy of Songun...has ruined our way of life, our culture, our economy. The months have proven, that we can not trust completely in them to have our best interests. It's time...we end the policy of Songun. It's time for a new policy...a New Juche, a new way...that will not force us to abandon everything for someone whom will betray us in the end..."

In short detail, Kim was explaining how she planned on reducing the affairs and controls the military had over the state. Reduction in the size of their armed forces and how she planned on reforming the Korean People's Army into an organization meant to protect the people and not serve their own interest. Beyond the rhetoric, which utilized the 'military rebel elite' as the scapegoats for all of the issues, corruption and problems that had plagued North Korea - the biggest point was her promise to reduce military spending and see to it, that new hardware would be developed, bought or built and that the people would see an improvement in the lives that had been 'stolen by the military elite'.

Afterwards, she began to explain HOW such policies would work in practice - words that would completely shatter the belief that had been held about the North Koreans. As her 'New Juche' policy wished for a détente with the West - primarily with South Korea, Japan and especially the United States of America. "...it's time...we end this...conflict. While we...the people of North Korea...shall always seek to be self-reliant, continue social progress and attempt to achieve our dreams...it's better done as friends...rather than enemies with the West. As a gesture of good faith...I hereby declare...that within a week up to three weeks...ALL foreign nationals, soldiers and other members of foreign agencies...are hereby granted amnesty by my word and deed and shall be allowed to return to their homelands. For America themselves...I hereby grant them leave to come and collect their dead and lost that have remained within our care since the end of the Korean War..."

Upon speaking such words, she would continue on - how the speed and extradition would now rely upon the actions of the foreign countries, and how soon they wanted their people back - as she explained her desires to improve trade and exchange with the West while continuing their ideals of self-reliance or New Juche. Meaning that while she was willing to open up trade, tourism and travel - she was doing things in a very 'Chinese' way that ensured that control would rest with the state, but foreign investment and companies would be soon welcome inside North Korea.

All the while - she would speak directly, words that would change the situation in the world completely. As Kim Yo-jong would explain in detail - how in the interest of cooperation and ensuring world peace would seek to end the hostilities that have kept North Korea isolated from the world and thus she would seek a mutual protection and cooperation scheme...in exchange for North Korea surrendering their nuclear program. The first time, since the foundation of the government had North Korea itself offered up an olive branch to the world - instead of demanding one themselves.

Power Struggles Subside in North Korea

Seoul--As the conclusion to a dramatic series of events that began last year, it appears that the succession crisis in North Korea has ended. The crisis, which began following the death of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, focused on his sister, Kim Yo-jong, and his brother, Kim Jong-chul. Details about the crisis are scarce but, based on satellite observations and the reports of the North Korean state news service, it would appear that a faction of senior military leaders attempted to stage a coup that would put Kim Jong-chul in the position of Supreme Leader.

After weeks of apparently heavy fighting, claimed by North Korean state media to be a “military exercise”, Kim Jong-chul was arrested and executed on the orders of Kim Yo-jong, who then proceeded to consolidate her power. This consolidation culminated on the 21st with the announcement that she would be actively pursuing a peace settlement with the Republic of Korea, an action never before seen from the North Korean regime.

Naturally, the North Korean announcement has been met with speculation and skepticism around the world. The Associated Press was unable to reach the North Korean government for comment, however a spokesperson for the South Korean government did say that the Republic of Korea is “cautiously optimistic” about the new Supreme Leader.

Democracy in Cuba?

Santiago--The shocking announcement by Raul Castro, dictator of Cuba after the resignation of Fidel Castro, of his own resignation, has caught many in the world by surprise. The 90-year old Castro had previously given up his seat as President of Cuba to Miguel Diaz-Canel, the same man he recently named as his successor to the position of First Secretary of the Communist Party. It remains to be seen if the Politburo will vote to abide by Castro’s wish or if they will elect a different First Secretary.
In a concerning move, the Foreign Ministry of the United Kingdom released a statement, calling for democratic elections and demanding the dissolution of the sole major political party in Cuba. No one within the Foreign Ministry could be reached for comment.

Airstrikes in Afghanistan signal renewed operations

Kabul--The US and Soviet Air Forces announced yesterday that they had conducted a series of airstrikes against Taliban positions in Afghanistan. These strikes come after years of drawdowns in US force strength in the region, drawdowns that have proven contentious with the Soviet Union.

At least one strike involved a US Avenger drone, which is claimed by the United States to have killed a dozen Taliban fighters in Nangarhar Province. Another strike, attributed to the Soviet Air Force, destroyed three Taliban trucks in Helmand province, with the Soviets claiming to have killed several senior Taliban leaders.

There are unconfirmed reports that the British are redeploying at least one infantry Brigade to Afghanistan, a unit which is allegedly being joined by elements of the 10th Mountain Division and 3rd Infantry Division.

Bucs travel to Green Bay ahead of NFC Championship Game

Green Bay--After a rough first season in Tampa Bay, the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers are set to face off against the Aaron Rodgers-led Packers in tomorrow’s NFC Championship Game. A victory for Green Bay would see the Packers in their sixth Super Bowl as a franchise, with a shot at dethroning the reigning Kansas City Chiefs. A victory for Tampa would see Tom Brady in the running for his 10th Super Bowl appearance and only the second Super Bowl for the Buccaneers.

Analysts are predicting a close win for Tampa Bay, especially since it appears the Bucs have figured out the issues with incorporating Brady’s play style. However, there is plenty of room for weather to have an impact on the game.

Amazon stock falls amid worker unrest

New York--Amazon’s stock price has fallen six percent amid increasing disquiet from Amazon employees. Complaints about wages, quotas, and the working environment have many on Wall Street concerned that Amazon may face difficulty in meeting their earnings goals, which would in turn impact the returns investors receive.

Amazon is currently one of the largest businesses in the world and the largest online retailer, with an estimated value of over $1 trillion US dollars. However, this success has not come without controversy. Between concerns over its impact on the environment to complaints of hostile working environments, hazardous working conditions, and opposition to labor organization, Amazon is one of the most controversial companies of the last decade.

Currently, Amazon workers in the US are demanding increased pay and benefits, better working conditions, and many are seeking to establish unions for Amazon employees, a move that the company has not taken kindly to. It remains to be seen how this will play out or how this will affect the market during this year.

Bad weather delays SpaceX launch

Cape Canaveral--Amid reports of bad weather this morning (Jan. 23), SpaceX has delayed the launch of a Falcon 9 loaded with a record 143 satellites. The launch was originally scheduled for 9:40 AM Eastern Standard Time but was delayed until 10 AM tomorrow.

Streaming services hit the ground running in 2021

Streaming services have elected to start 2021 off at a run, headed by Disney+ with their new lineup of shows including WandaVision. The continued success of streaming services is coming after yet another year of poor box office performances at movie theaters around the country. A growing portion of the population are appearing to abandon traditional broadcasters and movie theaters in favor of internet streaming, which may impact several blockbusters set to release this year.

Textron announced as winner of NGSW competition

Textron Systems has been announced as the winner of the US Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon competition, with Vortex Optics to produce the companion fire control system. Textron's rifle makes use of Case-Telescoped Ammunition to save on weight while increasing bullet diameter from 5.56mm to 6.8mm, with an accompanying increase in ballistic effectiveness.

4,000 weapons are expected to be manufactured and delivered this year, with as many as 121,000 delivered by 2025.

Marine Corps seeking force reduction in preparation for Pacific Great Power conflict

The Marine Corps is reducing its force by approximately 12,000 Marines by 2030 as it seeks a more efficient structure in preparation for great power conflict in the Pacific. Part of this reduction includes the disbandment of all USMC tank battalions, a regimental headquarters, three infantry battalions, and several other units. Other forces will then be organized into Marine Littoral Regiments, which are currently being tested in Guam to determine their efficacy and what alterations will be needed to ensure combat effectiveness.

Today was the day of Miguel Diaz Canel’s inauguration as President of Cuba, as well as General Secretariat of the Cuban Communist Party. The Politburo of the Cuban Communist Party has voted unanimously in favor of Canel’s ascension to the the General Secretariacy, and while some members were skeptical, they trusted Raul Castro’s judgement. An emergency session of the National Assembly of People’s Power had been scheduled for today as Raul’s last action as President the day prior, and in the chamber, members had gathered in front of a stage, decorated with Cuban flags, and on the wall behind the stage hung two portraits, one of Che Guevara and another of Fidel Castro. Next to the stage, Miguel talked with Raul.

“Well, this is it. The day has finally come,” he said.

“Yes, indeed. I do want to say again that I truly hold you in a quite high regard, and wish you well in your new endeavors,” Raul replied.

“Thank you.” Miguel had his personally written inauguration speech in hand, which Raul noticed.

“You never did let me go over your inauguration speech. Would you mind if i..”

“Oh, of course not, go ahead.”

Miguel handed him the papers, and he looked over them. A rather mixed look came to his face, impressed while at the same time concerned.

“Looks good” was all he ended up saying. He still trusted Miguel and his judgement, and handed back his speech.

“Thank you again. Wish me luck.”

With that, Miguel went onto the stage, and the Cuban national anthem played as the crowd of National Assembly members gave a standing ovation. Miguel went up to the stage and placed his speech down, then began to speak.

“Thank you all. I am very honored to be trusted with such a high position, and promise not to let this great nation down. If I may, I’d like to say a few words.

“This nation has a very storied past. From our liberation from Spain, to our liberation from the oppressive capitalist jaws of Bautista, we have shown that all forms of oppression must be fought against. And that…would include our own. The very reason for our Revolution was to liberate ourselves from oppression, and yet in the past we have been oppressors ourselves. This fact that we call ourselves liberators from western imperialism and oppression, yet be oppressors ourselves, is in itself an embarrassment, and for that, on behalf of this country and of this party, I sincerely apologize, to our people and to the world.

“However, we must not lament on past mistakes, rather turn to the future to right our wrongs. I myself have a plan to implement reform so that we may truly live up to our liberation aspirations, and so we can at last establish what the great thinkers of old such as Marx envisioned: a classless, equal society. This philosophy is frowned upon abroad, and for good reasons, as tyrants like Stalin and Mao brutally punished, oppressed, and murdered their own people for the sake of this philosophy. For the sake of Cuba’s prosperity, and the survival of socialism, we must not and will not repeat their mistakes.

“I, Miguel Diaz Canel, shall not repeat those mistakes of oppressing our own people. I have a set of promises that I plan on fulfilling during my Presidency.

“First, I promise that I will fight tooth and nail to get the American embargo lifted. The embargo, which the Americans justify with silly ideological differences, has served to do nothing but provide unnecessary suffering for the people of Cuba. It must not stand, and I hope the new president cares more about the people of Cuba than the previous administration. Whether it be through talks with America or otherwise, I promise that during my presidency, the American embargo will be fully lifted if I have anything to say about it.

“Second, our policies of oppression against our own people cannot continue, otherwise we potentially doom ourselves to failure. To insure that we can move forward, evolve, serve the people instead of oppress them, then reform is necessary. I shall bring these reforms, and bring back prosperity. Not just among this party, but among the people we are meant to serve. Through these reforms, which I shall name the Iniciativa de Renacimiento, Cuba shall once again shine among the brightest of nations, and be great once again.

“Third, I believe that it is time for Cuba to reconnect with the world. While we will remain self sufficient, we must no longer ignore the rest of the world. While we implement our reforms through my Iniciativa de Renacimiento, we must remain steadfast in our efforts. While simultaneously freeing our people under socialism, as socialism was always meant to do, we will make sure not to bow down to the demands of western imperialists— they know who they are —, instead forge our own way forward. I wish to free my people, not subjugate them to western imperialism. We simply request that while we extend an olive branch to the world that our sovereignty be respected.

“I will remain steadfast in my agenda of ‘liberation under socialism’, and shall bring a newfound prosperity to Cuba. I shall not abuse the trust put in me by this party, by Raul, and by the Cuban people.

“God bless Cuba, and God bless the Revolution!”

The crowd gave another standing ovation, marking the end of the Castro era, and the beginning of the Canel era.

MOSCOW-- Around lunchtime today, officers from the Federal Ministry of the Interior conducted raids and arrests in the Republic capital cities of Baku, Alma-Ata, and Ashkhabad. Among the arrests was the Prime Minister of the Azerbaijan SSR, Ali Asadov, Prime Minister of the Kazakh SSR, Askar Mamin, and Prime Minister of the Turkmen SSR, Kurban Berdyev. In addition, several republic-level bureaucrats in the three republics and high-ranking staff of the three premiers were also taken into custody.

Shortly following the raids and arrests, President Orlov released the following statement to the media.

"My fellow Soviet citizens, today acting on evidence from a long-running investigation by the Interior Ministry, federal police have arrested the Premiers of Azerbaijan, Turkmen, and Kazakh along with various staff members and officials. These arrests are a direct result of the overwhelming evidence collected that points to rampant and unchecked corruption that has been prolific in particularly these three Republics. It is my pledge to every citizen of the Union, in every Repulic that this administration will not allow corruption to go unchecked at any level. Corruption must be completely eliminated. God bless you and may God bless our Union."

Spokespeople from the Supreme Soviets of the three Republics say that the Republics will fully cooperate with Federal investigators in handing over any additional evidence and some sources even say that local authorities might bring their own charges against the Premiers after being emboldened by the Federal authorities actions. In addition, the three Republics Supreme Soviets have announced emergency sessions where it is widely believed that the three PMs will be officially removed from their positions.

Vice-President Rashid Meredow, himself a Turkmen by birth, had been put in charge of the newly created Presidential Anti-Corruption Special Task Force earlier this year. In a brief exchange with reporters outside his office, the Vice-President said that the Task Force had aided the Interior Ministry in the investigation and that the levels of corruption were simply stomach-churning.

Already people in Baku, Alma-Ata, and Ashkabad have taken to the streets celebrating the arrests of their corrupt leaders with many openly hopeful that President Orlov will be able to help usher in a more free and fair future for them at a local level.

President Orlov sat in his office as he flicked through the various pages of reports on the situation in North Korea. Persona satellites had captured several images over the past few weeks which had clearly shown unusual levels of military activity even for the Hermit Kingdom, and now everyone knew why. Looking at the comments from the new North Korean leader, Kim Yo-jong, Orlov hoped that she was sincere in her desire to see a new and reformed North Korea. It would certainly be a country that the USSR would be eager to invest heavily in. Something that should benefit both nations.

His only concern was a flood of people out of the country and to that end, Orlov had ordered the Border services to increase numbers along the border with the DPRK. Of course, legitimate refugees would be taken in for processing but with a high likelihood of instability throughout the DPRK, one couldn't be too careful.

Now, hopefully, Moscow would soon hear from the reclusive nation's new leader, and a new chapter in DPRK-Soviet relations could start.

Investigators still stumped over 2018's assassination attempt against President Joao Ximenes Alkatiri

It took place two and a half years ago, yet still, investigators both public in the National Police of East Timor (PNTL) and private, hired from one a many firm by interested associates have turned out with no additional leads to the case which rocked the country in late 2018. What has been confirmed by investigators suggest that the would-be assassin had political motives to perform the act, the President's old household was burnt to a crisp due to fires spurred on by a thrown Molotov Cocktail, flames that his excellency was close to succumbing to, and that public investigators believe that the assassin had no connections to the second-leading Political Party of Timor-Leste, Fretilin, though private investigators are still skeptical on the matter.
The press tells us that the president, Joao Ximenes Alkatiri has this to comment about the current situation on the matter:

"I find it foolish to attempt to come to any resolution to this event, not whilst still so little evidence has been brought up for any confirmation. It has been two and a half years since the attack. I escaped it, and the assassin(s) have not tried to do something similar since. The Fretilin party has also announced that they had no involvement on the attack and currently would not know of whom the suspect could be. Evidence suggests that the second-leading Political Party are also conducting an investigation, though some suggest this is being done half-heartedly.

The representative of Timor-Leste in the city of Newcastle, Australia responsible for communication between Dili to Port Moresby, Canberra and Honiara madam Olinda Carrascalão has confirmed to the press that active developments in the Economic alliance are moving slowly, if in the right direction. Currently, Canberra and Dili suggest to the Solomon Islands to pursue a policy of cooperation in the Bougainville issue, explaining that to give the island partial self-determination and autonomy from central government would serve to ease the situation and weaken it's intensity. Port Moresby has not commented on the matter whilst Honiara continues to insist that Central Government knows what is best for the island, and that Bougainville would be worse off with autonomy, in regards to economic factors.
In other news, whilst the Oceanic Economic and Prosperity Cooperation Group has been pushing to gain more members in the alliance, there has only been a single country that has shown interest in the proposal, that being the island nation of Kiribati... However, analysts suggest that allowing the island chain entry may be detrimental due to the South Tarawa's weakening situation against climate change, and all four members are taking it into consideration going forward. Australia has continued to push towards an olive branch towards Wellington, New Zealand to perhaps convince the nation into taking membership, however Wellington has not commented on the matter thus far.

"Constant hounding by the press, once again... That news network seems adamant to continue to probe me in my opinion of the dastardly event that occurred two and a half years ago. But I have more important things to deal with than thinking of that day..."

Prime Minister Joao Ximenes Alkatiri had been pondering on a development that had recently come to fruition just that day, and to add onto the fact of the other duties he must fulfill for his country, it brings down much stress. Joao had been in this position for two and a half years now, and most likely it will be longer still once the 2022 elections come, and go. Yet, the brutally stressful aspects of the job continue to surprise him in it's intensity... Granted, mr Alkatiri is prepared for all developments, he knows this. Sometimes however, he wonders if just a day's break would be too much to ask.

But, that is neither here nor there... There is plenty to do despite contemplating the difficulties of the job... For instance, foreign relations.
The Democratic Party has stayed true to it's word... With exception to the ongoing missions that are current, Timor-Leste must focus on itself rather than the outside world, that to branch out would only weaken what progress is, and could be done by not committing resources to such a function... Nevertheless, that does not stop others from reaching out to Dili, and indeed... One did.

Was by all means, a surprise... What the Soviets wanted from such a small place on the most southern end of Asia, one could have many guesses... Prime Minister Alkatiri had been contemplating on the matter for a while now, why reach out an olive branch to Timor-Leste? What of the other candidates, Indonesia? The Philippines or Australia? They wanted something from the Timorese, the only question that needed to be answered is, what would this young and small, yet upcoming nation gain in return?
His excellency had already contacted the Foreign minister on this development. As the dedicated man for such occurrences, Luis da Costa Vieira could figure how best to respond... And perhaps he may already be doing so. Joao Ximenes Alkatiri had his own work to do in the meantime, he would review what his honour Vieira had received when it comes:

Digitization Bill Introduced in Parliament

The Minister of Digital Reform, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, introduced in the Assembly the 'Digital Transformation Act'. This important bill aims to completely transform public administration by eliminating countless of hours of paperwork and red tape while allowing the citizens to access government services online either through their computer or through a single app on their mobile phone.

"Imagine," the Minister stated to the press, "being able to conduct all your dealing with the government on a sofa in your phone without ever needing to visit a government office and wait in line. That is what this bill does. It gives a digital ID to every adult citizen and digitizes the entire structure of public administration. It collects all government websites into a single website, gov.yg, that will allow citizens to access them with ease. It also introduces digital education in schools, thus preparing our children for the challenges of the new digital, globalized economy. It is of vital importance that our children become digitally literate. The overall effect of this bill will be to eliminate much of the bureaucracy keeping off investments, restore the trust of citizens to the government, prevent corruption as interactions with the public sector shall be faceless and substantially bring down the cost of our public administration while bringing up its quality."

§1 - Digital Signatures

Physical ID cards are to be paired with digital signatures (Digital ID). Digital signatures (Digital ID) will be mandatory for every adult citizen of the Confederation of Yugoslavia and Greece.
The digital signature shall:
1. be used to pay taxes, authenticate transactions with the government, do online banking and access health care records
2. be legally equivalent to manual signature
Each person will be provided a client certificate, to make the digital ID compatible with standard X.509 and TLS infrastructure.
The system will be accessed only through a highly encrypted end-to-end, two-factor authorization system, which will be accessible only with a digital ID or ID card. Only people authorized by the person owning the data can access their personal data.

§2 - Digital Administration

A 'gov.yg' website shall be established as a public sector information website to provide a single point of access of all government services. The website will replace the individual websites of hundreds of government departments and public bodies, and the URLs of all government departments shall be redirected to that new website.
All government/public sector departments that do not have a web platform, will be given a timeline of six months to build one. Those web platforms shall have their URLs stored in gov.yg, for easy access by the citizens.
Gov.yg will be using a simple search engine-like interface to tie the government's vast portfolio of websites together and allow easy access to them by the citizens.
The government will be making use of free open source software, such as GNU/Linux.
Civil servants will have to undertake a mandatory one-month digital course to familiarize themselves with digital administration.
All interactions between citizens and the public sector will be available online: all departmental paperwork will be digitized (PDF, Word) and use of digital ID will mean that no physical presence at any department will be required. However, adequate physical offices shall still be maintained and shall serve those who are unable to use online services.
Gov.yg and all its services will be also available on a single mobile phone app: 'YugGr-Gov App'. This will allow easy access to all government services through mobile phones.

§3 - Digital Education

A voucher shall be offered to adult citizens who wish to take up digital education courses. The voucher shall apply only for government-verified instructors.
Every classroom will be required to have at least one computer. Schools that cannot afford to do so, shall receive the necessary government funding.
'Digital Education' will become a lesson in all high-school classes of the Confederation of Yugoslavia and Greece: the lesson will familiarize children with digital skills necessary in the new globalized, digital economy.

Finance Ministers Announces Tax Reform

- Finance Minister Siniša Mali

Finance Minister Siniša Mali announced that his government plans to introduce tax-incentives to promote economic growth in the Confederation. "We aim to reduce the Confederal tax burden," he stated. "The Confederal corporate tax shall be reduced from the current rate of 20% to 18% this year. By the end of our term, we hope to reduce it to 15%, but this depends on how the economy grows and on our fiscal balance. We shall also reduce the Confederal income tax, with emphasis on the relieving the middle class."

"If people have more money in their pockets, they will spend more. This will boost consumption and economic growth. Low corporate tax rates shall attract foreign private investment, which shall create thousands of new, well-paying jobs. Our vision of the Confederation is one of growth powered by the private sector and prosperity brought by the creation of jobs rather than handouts. Preparations for a New War, Domestic
January through March 2021

As part of the modernization efforts started under the previous administration, exercises were being held on a far more regular basis. With tensions in the Far East growing with each passing day, the US military needed to begin planning for a possible conflict in the region. The mobilization of National Guard and Reserve units, the deployment of forces from the United States to a potential warzone, and the integration of coalition forces into a cohesive battleplan were all necessary considerations. The United States military would begin drawing up new contingency plans, this time focused on the primary potential adversaries: the People’s Republic of China and Iran. The recent announcement by Korea indicated a potential change in threat in that region but it was still a potential flashpoint, necessitating a third war plan.

The next requirement would be to expand combat capability to ensure that the United States could fight two major conflicts at once, though with a twist. The US Marine Corps, determined not to be a second US Army, was insistent on developing themselves into an advanced basing and expeditionary warfare force, which could potentially provide the United States with the ability to fight two major wars simultaneously while using the Marines for a holding action in a third conflict.

The next consideration would be a thorough study of American manpower potential. This would include lobbying for the expansion of the Selective Service Act to cover women and the construction of large warehouses to maintain reserve warstocks in climate controlled conditions, thus hopefully keeping them operational for long periods of time.

Unfortunately, this would be a daunting task. For a multitude of reasons, only 20% of Americans within the range of 17 to 24 were even eligible for military service, the rest being disqualified due to lack of education, health problems, or criminal records. In total, 9.7 million of the 33 million Americans in the prime age range would be eligible. Of those, only 5.7 million could be immediately available for service, about 4 million being enrolled in college programs. Of those, only 1.7 million are of the quality that the military would desire. And of those, only a couple hundred thousand would consider joining the military.

For many young Americans, the Armed Forces weren’t a prestigious career opportunity. They were a last resort, the place that those who couldn’t hack it in the real world went. A collection of rejects, psychopaths, and failures. And despite the best efforts of the military to change those views, they remained.

Those views were reinforced by older Americans, by the media, and accepted by these potential recruits who, unlike previous generations, were unwilling to leave their family and friends behind. In short, if a war broke out, the United States would be hard pressed to find bodies.

And it was this problem that would need to be addressed in the coming years. Failing to address that issue would render most contingency planning utterly pointless from the start.

But that wouldn’t be the only consideration. There was also the need to transport troops to the combat zones, equip those troops with arms, uniforms, and armor, and train them. There were 43 battalions in the United States Army set up to conduct training. Each of these battalions can handle around 1,000 soldiers at a time. In the event of mobilization, the Army could push 165,120 additional troops through basic training in a single year. That number is reduced with the consideration of advanced training, but on the whole the Army could increase its overall size with relative ease.

Other branches, like the Air Force, would be more hard pressed to replace losses. The US Air Force relied solely on Lackland Air Force Base for Basic Military Training, limiting its BMT graduates to 11,520 in a year at most, though Lackland itself could train about 85,000 students in a year through all of its units. The Navy, relying on Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, can train 109,200 entrants each year. The Marine Corps, though limited to about 35,000 entrants in a year, is also a smaller branch than the Navy or Air Force, and could potentially still function with a reduced training rate.

For the Navy, losses would be hardest to replace in terms of ships. The National Defense Reserve Fleet had been drastically reduced, with only a few dozen support ships in total, while the only warships that could be potentially called upon were in three Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facilities, mostly stricken and set to be disposed of. With no reserve of combat vessels, every ship lost by the US Navy in a war, anywhere in the world, would be a loss not easily replaced.

Equally concerning was the Air Force. Aircraft serviceability was greatly reduced due to a lack of skilled maintenance personnel. In addition, a lack of pilots meant reduced training hours available for new pilots, only exacerbating the issues. The Pentagon had taken steps to band-aid the problem, contract extensions, enlistment bonuses, re-sign bonuses. But it was becoming clear to military leaders that the “All Volunteer Force” was insufficient to meet the demands being placed upon the Armed Forces.

Such would be the topic of a lengthy memorandum being drafted by the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretaries of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force, and other members of the National Security community. The simple fact was that America no longer had a choice. It must either institute some form of conscription or face the very real threat of military impotence in a world increasingly dominated by military strongmen.

Preparations for a New War, International
January to March, 2021

The rising threat of China in the Indo-Pacific Region had created many shifts in the last few years. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, abandoned in 2008 after protests from China and a policy shift in Australia, was reformed in 2017, following increased aggression by China caused by its adoption of Xi Jinping’s “Wolf Warrior Diplomacy”. The growing tensions in the region, largely due to increasing Chinese pressure on Taiwan and concerns over human rights violations within China, had convinced the US that it was high time to expand the Quad. High on the list of additional allies were the USSR, South Korea, Vietnam, The Philippines, New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Other potential additions included the UK, the EU, and Canada. Many in the defense community also began suggesting the formalization of the Quad into a NATO-like organization, with perhaps even a fundamental shift in the NATO Treaty to create a more global organization.

This would also lead to a shift in several military exercises. The USSR was already invited to participate in RIMPAC 2022, something that had been done since 2012. But now there was the proposal to invite the Soviets to participate in Exercise Malabar (alongside the permanent partners of India and Japan), Exercise Balikatan (with Australia and the Philippines), and Exercise Talisman Saber (with Australia). Exercise Balikatan would require the negotiation of a Visiting Forces Agreement with the Philippines, which was something that could most certainly be accomplished, but many of the other exercises could be far more easily conducted. It would also allow for expanded cooperation between the US and the USSR, something actively pursued under the Obama and Trump Administrations since the US-USSR Cooperation of Forces Agreement in 2008.

Wilkerson’s Administration was also going to continue the sale of military equipment to Taiwan, especially in terms of modern US equipment. Under the Trump Administration, some $18.2 billion dollars worth of military equipment had been sold to Taiwan, including 108 new-build M1A2T tanks and 66 F-16C/D Block 70 fighters, complete munitions, spare parts, and training. Wilkerson had the personal goal of exceeding not only Trump’s total in sales but also the practical effect of those sales. Wilkerson’s Administration would also consider proposing increased cooperation between the US military and the Taiwanese Armed Forces.

The USSR’s invitation of the US to, and the subsequent US participation in, Vostok 2018 and Caucasus 2020, demonstrated to the world that the US and USSR were making great strides in abandoning the Cold War mentality of distrust. There was some speculation by national security and foreign policy pundits that this could lead to the inclusion of the USSR in NATO or the very abolition of NATO as an organization, due to the growing friendly relationship between the USSR and the West.

In light of those exercises, another idea being considered by the US was inviting the USSR to participate in Flag Exercises alongside the US Air Force, US Army, and Royal Canadian Air Force, a symbolic gesture of goodwill, since an invitation to participate in the Flag Exercises was only extended to nations considered friendly to the United States and had not been extended under the Obama or Trump Administrations. If this invitation were to be announced, it would signal very publicly that the Wilkerson Administration considered the USSR an important compatriot to the United States.

Preparations for a New War, the Budget

The new defense initiative would require a massive investment. Over $5 trillion dollars over the next five years, about $1 trillion each year. What would this buy?

For the Army, this would be 25 Armored Brigades, 15 Stryker Brigades, 30 Aviation Brigades, 15 Security Force Assistance Brigades, 4 Special Operations Aviation Battalions, additional funding for Rangers and Special Forces groups, 777 Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles, 502 upgraded M1 Block III SEP tanks, 600 heavy tactical trucks, 1,182 medium tactical trucks, 1,478 Ground Mobility Vehicles, 17,848 JLTVs, 1,468 Strykers, 414 M2001A2 Crusader Integrated Management vehicles, 382 AH-64D/E attack helicopters, 62 MH/CH-47F/G, 634 UH-60 Blackhawks, 250 UH-72 Lakotas, 20 MQ-1Cs, 60,900 GMLRS rockets, 12,340 Hellfires, 5,292 JAGMs, 8,500 Javelins, 290,856 NGSWs, 1,836 Precision Strike Missiles, 250 PAC-3 MSE missiles, 250 PAC-3 launchers, as well as increased training and maintenance cycles to increase readiness and accelerations to new programs, such as OMFV, DLP, MPF, Hypersonics, FARA, and FLRAA. All of this would see the Army budget increase to $302 billion by 2025, with a total of more than $1.3 trillion invested in the Army over the next five years.

For the Navy, this would be 5 more Ford Class carriers ordered, 2 Nimitz Class carriers extended, 5 more LHAs ordered, 5 more LPD Flight IIs ordered, 10 Ticonderogas extended, 5 DDG-1000s ordered, 16 DDG-51s ordered, 18 FFG(X)s ordered, the Columbia class accelerated, 10 more Virginia class ordered, 1 EPF ordered, 4 T-AGOs ordered, 16 Fleet Oilers ordered, 2 new Carrier Air Wings established, 30 EA-18Gs, 60 F/A-18E/Fs, 242 F-35Cs, 17 MQ-4Cs, the acceleration of the MQ-25, 24 MQ-9As, 7 CMV-22s, 2,364 AIM-9X missiles, 3,602 GMLRS rockets, 600 Hellfire missiles, 1,271 JAGM, 16,175 JDAMs, 1,120 Rolling Airframe Missiles, 3,476 SDB-IIs, 1,525 AMRAAMs, 420 LRASMs, 775 Tactical Tomahawk Missiles, 1,550 SM-6 missiles, accelerations to the development of Navy Hypersonics, and increased training and maintenance cycles to increase readiness. In total, 17 new warships would be commissioned by 2025. This would see the Navy budget increase to $232.26 billion by 2025, with a total of more than $1.09 trillion invested in the Navy over the next five years.

For the US Marine Corps, there would be a loss of all three tank battalions. This would be alongside the retirement of 105 AV-8s. Acquisitions would include 1,048 Amphibious Combat Vehicles, 124 CH-53E/Ks, 655 H-1s, 19 MV-22s, 174 F-35B/Cs, 21 KC-130Js, 130 Javelins, and 240 Land Based Tomahawks. Other funding would be pushed towards increased training and maintenance cycles to improve readiness and increased funding for Marine Special Operations. The USMC would be the only branch to see a net reduction in active formations over the next five years. This would see the USMCs budget increase to a high of $87.98 billion in 2025, with a total investment of $407.68 billion over the next five years.

For the Air Force, there would be the retirement of 280 A-10 attack planes and 54 B-52 bombers. Acquisitions would include 76 F-15EXs, 480 F-35As, 270 MQ-9As, 16 HC/MC-130Js, 84 KC-46s, 4,482 AMRAAMs, 4,914 JASSMs, 263 LRASMs, 2,538 AIM-9Xs, 11,900 Hellfires, 400 JAGMs, 59,600 JDAMs, 19,340 SDB-Is, and 12,408 SDB-IIs. Other funds are devoted to increased training and maintenance cycles to improve readiness and accelerations to key programs like hypersonic weapons, B-21, NGAD, and GBSD. This would see the Air Force’s budget increase to $275.78 billion in 2021, reducing to about $225.01 billion by 2025, with a total investment of over $1.2 trillion over the next five years.

The Space Force would see significant growth under the new program. This would include the purchase of 4 AEHF satellites, 4 MUOS satellites, 10 WGS satellites, 20 GPS-IIIF satellites, 1 Next Gen OPIR GEO satellite, 2 Next Gen OPIR Polar satellites, and 10 GSSAP satellites. This would see the Space Force budget peak at almost $32 billion in 2023 before it fell to $22.13 billion in 2025, with a total investment of $128.06 billion over the next five years.

Finally, Defense Wide spending changes would see the purchase of 5 new AEGIS Ashore facilities, 31 Ground Based Midcourse Defense sites, and 300 THAAD launchers. Other expansions would include the addition of 25 Cyber Combat Mission Teams, 15 Cyber National Mission Teams, 50 Cyber Protection Teams, and 25 Cyber Support Teams. The DOD would also stop running schools (on-base schools for military families) and commissaries, turning the control of schools over to other agencies. There would also be funding increases for other programs, including $120 billion for RDT&E, $110 billion for Science and Technology, and $24 billion for basing expansions and improvements. This would see Defense Wide spending increase steadily to $191 billion by 2025, with a total investment of $909.36 billion over the next five years.

All told, there would be an increase of 136% in terms of funding compared to previous budget plans. The Army would increase in size to 1.8 million troops, the Navy to about 476,000 personnel, the Marine Corps would remain roughly the same in size, the Air Force would increase to about 516,000 personnel, and the Space Force would increase to 8,700 personnel. In total, the US military would increase to about 3 million troops, a significant increase over present manpower levels. This manpower increase would be helped largely by changes to the standards required to enter the Armed Forces. Notably, misdemeanor crimes, lack of high school diplomas, and tattoos would be largely ignored. Additionally, increased effort would be devoted to recruiting pending immigrants, with military service argued as an easy way to get citizenship for the recruit and their immediate family.

The increasing belligerence of the Chinese Communist Party was creating an air of tension within the United States. Where a decade ago recruits were difficult to come by, now the military was finding it easier to draw in quality recruits. However, the pool of volunteers was likely still too small. As such, the military would be proposing to Congress a limited, peacetime draft, to fill manpower needs. As far as the leaders of the military were concerned, Congress had issued a mission. Current recruitment efforts were insufficient to meet the mission requirements. As such, more drastic measures would need to be taken.

Mariinsky Theatre Primorsky Stage, Vladivostok, USSR

President Orlov sat just inside the front doors of the theatre looking over some final notes before the North Korean delegation arrived. Outside a military honor guard and band sat ready to give the North Korean leader a truly monumental welcome. This meeting was one with all the stops pulled out, first the delegations would have a group photo, following that they would enjoy a large dinner before attending a show by the Vladivostok Orchestra in the main theatre. Then finally the two leaders would split off by themselves and their translators to iron out details. Hopefully, this would be the start of a truly open relationship.

The recent events in the hermit kingdom presented a clear opportunity for the USSR to invest in the nation, and it was an opportunity that Orlov was quick to seize on, before anyone else could. He just hoped that the warm history between the two nations and the promise of Soviet infrastructure would be enough to help crack open the DPRK. But that all would depend on how today went.

As things were, it didn’t take long before the escort and limo would arrive at that. Carrying a woman that many considered the ‘heir’ to the Hermit Kingdom - though many had once held the same hope for her brother...they had been sadly disappointed when he had been no different than his father. Although it seems that ‘womanly’ touch may hold a much better solution to the situation in North Korea. Either way, the vehicle would soon enough stop and the woman in question would emerge - someone that looked quite meek and calm on the outside, from her eyes alone...it spoke of someone that had delivered her fair share of ‘judgement’ upon her enemies.

President Orlov smiled as he went through the front doors and extended his hand to his North Korean counterpart saying “Premier Kim, it is an honor to host you here in Vladivostok. I pray your train ride here and car ride were both pleasant?”

“Decent...hopeful they continue...more peaceful ways and acts…” she replied, her Russian being broken but enough to convey her intentions as she accepted the handshake as they would march on forward for the ‘show’ until they could get down to the true meat of the subject, that both had arrived to handle.

Vasily smiled and allowed a few photos to be taken of the handshake before leading the group inside and through more sets of doors where a dinner feast had been laid out along a long ornate table. Taking his place at the head, Orlov stood and said a blessing over the food they were about to eat before taking his water glass and saying “I would like to propose a small toast to our guests. May the future of both our nations be bright and may our conversations here today be fruitful.” Following the toast, Orlov sat back down and turned to the North Korean leader beside him, saying for the translator to hear, “I hope that you enjoy the food. I am most eager for our discussion later.”

Following the meal Vasily led his North Korean counterpart out of the dining area and off to a side room bringing only their translators with. Inside the room, a small table with chairs around it sat in the center with a small table with coffee, tea, and water off to the side.

Sitting down at a seat, Vasily waited until Kim did the same before saying “Let me start off by saying how sorry I am to hear about the passing of your brother, however I am glad you were able to quell things and that you are wanting to move your nation forward. It is my hope that the USSR can help you in accomplishing this and so I would like to start our talks by proposing establishing an aid program for your nation, the USSR would send food and medical supplies as well as extend partial-loans to you in order to assist in starting the road to change you are rightfully pursuing.”

“He was my brother...even my family was more...prideful than reasonable…” replied Kim at that, as she tried to carry some sense of pride and dignity with her - even if she had to admit that the meal and greeting that she had received was far more than she expected. The days of old couldn’t keep them afloat forever - though, the actions of the past had demonstrated that old allies were the way towards reform over the Americans.

As Kim took a moment to hear out what her translator spoke before she replied to Vasily in response. “...thank you. It will be nice to restore the relationships that had been established since our creation. Our goals are to reform and restore our nation, infrastructure and economy to a more modern standard…” she replied - as pleasantries were exchanged and then enough the ‘meat’ of the subject arrived. “...I assume you wish to know the details about the...main subject?”

It wasn’t a lie, that...many...were eager to know the truth about the North Korean nuclear program and wondering for years if things would get better or worse at that. So far, things had remained ‘cold’ over the subject. Though, Kim Yo-jong had been the one to talk about ‘denuclearization’ first when she took power - instead of talks of continuing or expansion when her brother had taken over.

Vasily gave a tight smile and nodded saying “Your nuclear program. It is of course something of importance. Although my understanding is that you’ve presented the idea of dismantling your arsenal and program already in your address. What I would like to offer is that the USSR, with our technical expertise and capabilities, be allowed to collect and then dismantle your nuclear stockpile. Once that has been done, investments are sure to flow in from not just us, but the world at large. This is truly the way to bring your nation forward.”

Sitting back in his seat and taking a sip of water, Vasily added “In order to give you peace of mind, the USSR would be willing to agree to defend North Korea should you be the target of an unprovoked war. However, we’d also need your assurance that human rights abuses, such as targeting faithful Christians, will not continue under your leadership.”

“Yes...I understand...though, you must also understand...ideology...is hard to kill,” replied Kim - having seen enough abuse to dislike the practice. In a sense due to the pragmatic waste that was demonstrated - and the potential that could be achieved. “...still, the worst aspects are being taken out. We do not wish to be remnants of the old era…”

Kim knew enough that such offers had been proposed by previous organizations - though it was until recently that they saw how ‘effective’ the Americans were in dealing with delicate situations. It was one reason why she had accepted such an open and quick resolution to this issue. Less the Americans sniff weakness and potential. “Dismantlement will take time, politics are a painful business,” she muttered - the purges had dealt with the old guard, but she wasn’t eager to let her guard down just yet. “Though...we will be willing to offer a branch of trust for now.”

As things were, Kim allowed one of her folk to bring forward a briefcase and from it - she produced something that would’ve earned anyone a charge of high treason...if they weren’t her. In this case, Vasily Orlov wasn’t given the keys to the nuclear missiles itself. Though he did get documentation of the program, silos and a list of ‘material’ utilized at that. It was as close to a promise as possible - giving the Russians a way to start off...and have a list of targets if things went awry or someone else came to power.

“It’s the best I can do for now...from there...we can start the proper process. Assuming no issues come from your side…” she added - hoping to use this to show the ‘independents’ that trusting in their old allies would serve better over holding WMDs in stock.

Vasily took a moment to look over everything. The fact that Kim was willing to hand all of this over to him spoke volumes to the Soviet leader. “Well, this is certainly a show of good faith on your end, and a very appreciated one at that. I believe from here we can start putting together a plan for full denuclearization.”

Setting the North Korean information down beside him, Vasily continued by saying “I believe that the USSR would be willing to send you, within a week, train loads of food, humanitarian supplies, and medicine. In addition, we could start bringing in food aid today by plane as a show of our good will towards you and your people.”

“That would be most kind…” she responded, giving her Russian counterpart a genuine smile at that - as much as one could afford in this game of geopolitics. As they would soon enough head on out to inform the world of their decision.

Smiling, Vasily stood and motioned to the door saying “Well, shall we announce to the world the turning of a new page?”

As time passes, his health has been deteriorating, and he might be on the path of dying from a serious illness. Fortunately, his son, Abraham Afwerki, will take his place if President Isaias were to die, according to him. Abraham is a politician and the first child of President Isaias's three children. He is unmarried and is a proud member of the PFDJ. As of now, President Isaias is still alive but is in an unstable condition.

The insistence on retaining a single party state, which is supported by brutal suppression of political opposition, and the extreme levels of control exerted over the lives of everyday Cubans, controls and suppression that have driven more than a million Cubans to flee for the United States, at great personal risk to themselves, provide the United States in general and this Administration in particular little incentive to adopt a gentler stance.

If you truly wish to see the relationship between the United States and Cuba improve, then instead of demanding unilateral action on the part of the United States, show that you are truly concerned for the lives of your fellow Cubans and allow democracy to return to Cuba. I would be remiss in my duties as a representative of one of the largest republics in the world if I did not lay free and open general elections as a pre-requisite for the normalization of relations between our nations.

It had been a few days since Miguel Diaz Canel rose up to the Cuban Presidency, and reactions among the Cuban people have been rather mixed. Some applaud his promises of reform, while others were skeptical about them. They had doubts that Miguel would walk this talk of his.

And walk his talk he so far has.

On his first day, he signed a series of executive orders releasing political dissidents, granting them amnesty, and providing compensation for any physical and psychological damage done. He also signed an order to provide an official apology to the Cuban people for the suppression of the government of their own people under the Castros. On his second day, he signed orders aimed at the economy, suspending government land redistribution programs through May 30, declaring a State of Emergency over food shortages and high food prices, providing tax cuts towards the agricultural sector, and introducing a temporary food rationing program.

On his third day, he received a message back from President Roland Wilkerson of the United States.

President Wilkerson’s reply was rather disappointing, but Miguel promised he’d get the embargo lifted, no matter what it takes. He figured he’d talk with other members of the Communist Party of Cuba and members of his parliament on how to meet these requests without toppling the current government behind closed doors.

This is what he had done for most of the day; listening to the others debate. One argued that their request shouldn’t matter and that the Iniciativa de Renacimiento should go on, regardless of American interests and requests. Another argued that rejection of America won’t lead to embargo being lifted anytime soon, and that Cuba should find some way to implement democracy. President Canel liked the suggestion, requesting elaboration.

They went on, suggesting that the National Assembly of People’s Power be dissolved and for emergency elections to be called to fill in seats. How the nomination process would work would be that the peers of a nominee, such as their neighbors, family members, and friends, would make an official nomination, and after the nominee gains a certain amount of nominations, then verifies the quota with a local Committee for the Defense of the Revolution branch, they would be put on an official local ballot. No one would necessarily run against anyone else, and be elected based on merit instead of politics. To help fulfill this, the National Assembly of People’s Power would be made a nonpartisan assembly. After elections, and all seats are filled, an amendment to the constitution to do these NAPP elections once every five years starting in 2025 could be proposed and passed by the new, nonpartisan NAPP, and could pass. To simply the process, no one would have to be a registered member of the Cuban Communist Party, or any other party, to earn a nomination.

Canel sat as they explained, listening closely. After they finished, he said “That…just might work.”

Others agreed, and with everyone’s approval, Miguel went through on the agreement. The next day, which happens to be today, he would announce in a statement to the public that the National Assembly of People’s Power would be dissolved, and emergency elections would take place on March 15 of this year. He explained how the elections would work, as well as the nomination process and the new nonpartisanship of the NAPP. He also would encourage people to vote in these elections, and to make their nominations, or if they so chose, run for the NAPP. He concluded with “this marks only one of the first steps towards ‘liberation under socialism’. It is up to us to decide Cuba’s destiny, and if I have anything to say about it, it will be a destiny of prosperity. God bless Cuba, and God bless the revolution!”

He would also announce that he would propose three additions to the Cuban Constitution, which would grant the freedom of press, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly, and would be voted on by the public in a referendum alongside the NAPP elections.

Freedom of Press

Private news outlets, excluding those on a Presidentially determined Exclusion List, will be allowed to freely write stories and document events in Cuba with little to no state interference.

Freedom of Assembly

All citizens and groups of Cuba, excluding groups who hold fascist, national socialist, or other hateful views, will be allowed to freely assemble, be that to protest against the Cuban government, foreign governments, or otherwise, with little to no state interference.

Freedom of Speech

All citizens of Cuba shall be allowed to freely speak their opinions on online platforms, media outlets, and otherwise with little to no state interference, excluding hate speech.

These amendments will be added to the Cuban constitution pending a vote by the public, and already established amendments contradicting these shall be struck null and void in the event of public approval.

The last 20 years had taken a toll on the two Roman Consuls, particularly Fini who had been struggling to fulfill his duties for the last 6 months following a minor heart attack. The decision to step down had been long anticipated by the Roman public, who had given much support to the two men over their consulship. Speculation had been rife that Fini would stand down alone, however Romagnoli stood in solidarity with his friend in order to clear the air for their successors. Now the race was on to decide who would become the next consuls and several names are already in contention, such as the conservative Francesco Storace, the neo-fascist populist Roberto Fiore and the liberal Matteo Renzi. While these three names appeared prominent now, there was much time for things to change and new challengers to enter into the race and that what was just to happen that fateful day in Rome.

Sitting in their joint senatorial office, the Consuls invited their guest in. The sound of boots clicking against the marble grew ever closer, before a knock at the door and a reply from the consuls in unison; "Enter".
Walking in was the Chief of Staff of the Roman Army, Salvatore Farina. The Praetor had been brought in for an audience with the Consuls as to ascertain his thoughts on who should succeed them, with particular regard paid to martial and leadership abilities.

"Hail Rome," declared Praetor Farina as he gestured with a roman salute at the Consuls

"Be seated Praetor," said Consul Fini

"We have asked you here today to see whether you believe any of the primary contenders to replace us have what it takes to lead Rome in the coming years, no matter the circumstances facing her." Stated Consul Romagnoli

"Many around us fear our name Praetor, so do not be fooled for a second by our continued membership in the European Union or NATO; if they saw us moving to disengage from their institutions, we would be under threat of a preemptive strike." Added Fini

"Most honourable consuls," Began Farina, "I had expected a question of this nature when I received your summons and so have been analysing the abilities of the three front runners; Storace, Fiore and Renzi. Storace is a party man and is unable to provide the unique leadership abilities required for the role. Fiore knows only how to be an elephant and so is a greater threat to Rome than any one nation. Renzi, personal feelings aside, while charismatic and sometimes strong, gets the balance wrong in the opposite way of Fiore. He knows how to compromise, but never how to seize."

"That would be a fairly accurate assessment of these three, and we came to similar conclusions Praetor," Said Fini "And so we come to the real reason we called you here Praetor. While you may not have the political skill and experience that we do, you have all the abilities and drive to be a strong and wise consul that leads Rome to further prosperity."

"My consuls, I am beyond honoured, but who would you have be my opposite number" interjected Farina

"Well... you're not gonna like this...." Answered Fini

"It's Renzi," said Romagnoli, finishing his colleague's sentence.

Renzi and the Praetor had a history of run ins over the previous 20 years, whether it was Renzi's accusing Farina of corruption, his attempt to remove him as Chief of Staff of the Army in the Senate or the worst of all in his mind, taking his daughter's hand in marriage without his permission. The son-in-law from hell had a name and it was Matteo Renzi. But no matter their personal history, it was beyond obvious the Renzi complemented Farina's own skillset perfectly and, assuming their differences could be set aside, it may yet work out well for all involved....maybe.

Afghan-Chinese Border
January 26th 2021

The border guard station which sat on the only road from Afghanistan into China was protected by 2 battalions of border guards from the Chinese Ministry of the Interior and 2 more battalions of mechanized infantry from the PLA. They were there to prevent any Taliban members from crossing the border and influencing China's own Muslim population. The soldiers and the border guards knew that their country would more than likely enter Afghanistan if the Americans and Soviets ever pull out and the Taliban start gaining territory. Chinese military intelligence starting back in March of 2017 looking at just who has been supplying the Taliban and after 8 months of intense investigation, it was found that ISI, Pakistan's foreign intelligence service, was found to be supporting both Al Qaeda and the Taliban. This pissed off the Chinese government badly as Pakistan and China were friendly with each other and China had been supporting Pakistan with money and military equipment which was used to supply terrorists. China began investigating just who within ISI that was supporting these terrorists. The investigation finally ended in December 2020 with evidence proving that the entire leadership of ISI was supporting terror groups within Afghanistan. An emergency meeting of the Chinese Politburo was held on December 20th 2020 to discuss this information and decide on whether or not to pass it on to both the Americans and the Soviets. More than a month passed before a decision was finally made to give this information to the Americans and the Soviets so the Chinese Ambassadors to both nations asked urgently to meet with both presidents as soon as possible.

Guangzhou Naval Base

General Wei Fenghe, the head of the Ministry of National Defense, arrives at the Guangzhou Naval Base to inspect the readiness of China's warships including one of China's most prized ships, the Aircraft Carrier Admiral Zhang Lianzhong. The one thing he was against was any future invasion of Taiwan by the PLA. He knew that any such invasion would be bloody especially if the Americans got involved so such plans have been tabled atleast for the moment. His main focus right now is the United States. From the intelligence reports he has read over, the United States looks like it is planning a massive military expansion in the coming years. He has proposed a military budget increase of 15% each year with the main focuses being improving the quality of Chinese troops across the board, R&D and weapons purchases.

Expansion of the Suez

Earlier today, government officials have revealed plans to begin the expansion of the Suez Canal. When asked about the decision, officials pointed to the increase of maritime traffic and the need to keep the canal flowing smoothly in order to better serve both Egypt, and by extension, the world, as the Suez is one of the most traffic heavy areas in the world. Some questioned whether Egypt could afford such a project, but those worries were dismissed as such an expansion has happened before from 2014-2016. No comment has been made from President Al-Sisi, but from what officials have said, he is in complete support of the project. While details of the project have not been given out, it has been confirmed that construction should begin later this year.

Construction of New Capital

The construction of the New Administrative Capital has been ongoing since 2015. The project so far has been proceeding on schedule. There are high hopes within various levels of the government that the new capital will be completed by 2030, just as planned. The New Administrative Capital was planned to be a beautiful city, built halfway between Cairo and the Suez. Considering the overpopulation of Cairo and the expected population boom within the next few decades have many officials worried about the future. The new city, officials said, would hopefully relieve the pressure off of Cairo and help deal with the overpopulation within the city.

War in the Sinai

Ever since the Revolution in 2011, the Sinai has been subject to a decade long insurgency. The initial insurgency wasn't too difficult to contain by security forces, however, with the rise of the Islamic State, the insurgency gained strength and momentum. Over the past decade, the Egyptian military has been able to build up its presence within the Sinai, combating the insurgency and pushing it towards the brink. The military has stated that there are some 12,000 militant forces still in the Sinai, but that further operations were planned to root them out.

Earlier this week, an airstrike led to the deaths of 8 militant members. It was an response to an earlier bombing that led to the death of 2 security members as well as another 3 being injured. The military has come out and assured the public that the militants within the Sinai won't be able to survive for much longer, and that within the coming years, the situation should stabilize. However until it is confirmed that the Sinai is 100% safe, the military has advised citizens to be careful travelling through the region.

President Al-Sisi has sent out congratulations to the leaders of both nations, wishing that relations with both nations continue to improve for the foreseeable future.

Congratulations to Cuba

The government has sent a warm welcome to the new Cuban administration. Many are skeptical that the new leader will be able to effectively reform the island nation, assuming that he was serious about said reforms. For now, many are looking to see how things will turn out for Cuba and its people.

North Korea

The government has made little comment about the change in leadership in North Korea. Despite the lack of official comments, one can infer that there isn't going to be much change in policy. The government will most likely keep the same policies in place as they keep watch on the situation and make changes accordingly. However, for now, there isn't going to be much change.

Inside the grand and impressive Tsaritsyno Palace, Soviet Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu sat across from Prime Minister Artyukhov and with the Finance Minister, Anton Siluanov, and Alexander Voloshin, who currently served as First Deputy Prime Minister, sitting the other two sides of the small ornate wooden table that rested in the center of the spacious office given to the Prime Minister for his use while at Parliament.

The four men had been gathered together in the PM’s office for the past several hours at this point. In only a matter of minutes, the Soviet of the Union would be gaveled into session and the first vote would be held on the 2021-2022 Soviet Budget. Things had been set since last November and the budget was widely expected to pass with 400 plus votes. However, that was before Orlov had been sworn in and, after only a few days in office, submitted several revisions to the budget. Now the budget called for a military spending bill of 300.76 billion (USD) or 4.12 percent of the GDP, up from the previous 3.8 percent. In addition to that, the new budget allocated money into a pilot program aimed at giving incentives and breaks to families that 2 or more kids including a small monthly stipend of 100 (USD), tax breaks until the youngest child turns 18, and partial subsidization of childcare after 2 years old. In addition to the benefits aimed at increasing the fertility rate, the budget also allocated funds to a social security fund specifically for newly married couples that would pay them 30 (USD) a month for the first 24 months of their marriage, and the benefits would be extended for another 12 months if the couple had at least one child and extended another 12 months if the couple had two children. Funds were also set to be allocated to a social welfare campaign, ran through the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection that would be aimed at encouraging young, married couples to have at least 2 children and young non-married individuals to get married while still young.

These last-minute additions had angered some of the more staunch fiscal hawks even within the President’s party, and with the budget needing to 2/3rds majority needed to pass the bill in the lower house, the margin had already been tight, to begin with.

“We can offer Alexander Zhukov support on his amendment to the upcoming infrastructure bill in return for his support for the budget. That should bring his faction into the fold and give us 342, tight margin but it passes.” Voloshin offered to the group and looking at the Prime Minister.

Sitting back in his chair, Artyukhov turned to the Defense Minister and said “Speak with Zhukov and remind him that this budget also funds some of the military projects he himself championed. Voloshin, offer him our support on the amendments as well. Let’s get this thing passes gentlemen.”

With their orders given, the group dispersed to ensure the passage of the budget.

SNS Admiral Kuznetsov Aircraft Carrier, Barents Sea, 70 Miles off the Soviet Coast

Soviet Vice-Admiral Serhiy Hayduk stood on the bridge of the flagship of the Russian navy, the SNS Admiral Kuznetsov Aircraft Carrier. Down below on the flight deck sat on the somewhat rectangular object. The Su-57C had been in development for a few years at this point but this test would be its most important hurdle, if everything went successfully then the Su-57C could be expected to enter into service by year-end, serving first on the Kuznetsov herself. With a brief chatter over the radio, the jet catapulted down the flight deck and up into the sky climbing and starting into ariel maneuvers. After some time, the jet circled back and lined up before performing a successful landing.

- Since the signing of a tentative deal between the USSR and DPRK that is said to pave the road to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Soviet planes have made nearly a dozen flights into Pyongyang bringing in medical, food, and other humanitarian supplies. - The SNS Admiral Lazarev has reportedly finished system tests after being the first of the Kirov Class ships to be equipped with the 3S14 universal VLS cells allowing it to use the Kalibr and other missile systems. The Lazarev is expected to rejoin the Black Sea Fleet within the next few weeks.

Sinai Peninsula

Deep within the Sinai, a small compound was full of activity. It seemed like the people inside were unaware that they were being watched from just outside, as El'Sa'ka Commandos waited outside, waiting for the all clear to begin their operation. The leader of the unit looked through his scope once more, confirming that nobody has left the compound, before radioing in for permission. He, along with many of the commandos around him, would've preferred if the place was bombed from above, but command wanted them to raid the compound in hopes of collecting information on other hideouts.

The sky was clear, with the moon shining bright. Command got back to the sergeant, giving him the go ahead to begin the assault. He had already placed his men in a circle, surrounding the compound on all sides, ensuring that nobody would be able to escape, if they attempted to. He radioed in his subordinates, giving them the all clear, and moments later, shots rang out. The guards around the compound dropped dead in rapid succession as the militants inside the few buildings shot out in all directions from the windows. Despite having fought against the government for a decade, the militants seemed to have gotten sloppy. Then again, maybe they were fighting inexperienced men who joined recently.

Those thoughts briefly went through the sergeant's head, but he quickly dismissed them, knowing that underestimating your enemy could get your men killed. He looked at the fireteam that was with him and signaled for them to move up with him. They approached the compound; getting close enough to one of the buildings before throwing a frag through one of the windows. An explosion was heard and he nodded to one of his men to breach the door. The door was forced open and they entered.

The fighting lasted for less than 30 minutes. There was sadly nothing of worth to be gathered in the compound, other than boxes full of weapons and ammo. The commandos began to collect the bodies, of both combatants and noncombatants. The survivors who surrendered would most likely not have a good fate awaiting them, the men, would most likely be executed under law. The women and children would probably be watched over closely and rehabilitated, only a small mistake away from being thrown in prison. The sergeant looked at the survivors and saw the hatred in their eyes. He made the radioed in, requesting to be picked up.

Cairo

Deep in the ,magnificent, Heliopolis Palace, President el-Sisi sat at his desk, reading over reports coming in from the various ministries. The conflict in the Sinai was still dragging on, and the militants are trying their best to avoid open conflict with the military. He honestly wished they would go into open battle so the military would end them, but until then, he had no choice but to rely on special forces and air strikes to slowly grind down their numbers and morale. However, that was the least of his worries.

The dam Ethiopia had built was still as sore spot in his eyes. The Nile had always been the lifeline of Egypt, and the dam threatened to cut that lifeline. He had seen old maps of Ancient Egypt, the kingdom controlling almost the entire Nile, and it made sense. Why wouldn't they try and control the entire river? When its the only thing keeping you alive, why not control all of it? Sadly, this wasn't the ancient times. In the modern era, there were rules that had to be followed. He sighed and leaned back in his chair, pondering what to do. He didn't wish to attack Ethiopia, but the military made it clear that they were willing to do it if he gave the go ahead. He wanted to save that option for last, but past negotiations haven't done anything for his nation.

He continued looking through his reports, until he saw a letter from the Soviets. Reading it, he smiled, happy that the Soviets shared his wish for closer ties.

The tall, dark shape of the oil tanker loomed over the horizon. Usaym Khuzaymah Ganim looked around the small boat at his brothers and silently praised Allah for this good fortune. The sun was already falling below the horizon, allowing the three small boats, provided to Usaym and his compatriots by their Iranian compatriot, to approach the Zionist vessel undetected. “Praise Allah, for He is truly mighty,” Usaym said, quietly, as the motor growled with acceleration. A quiet murmur of voices answered. “Praise Allah,” they said, “He shall grant us victory.”

Aboard the tanker ship ZIM Galilee, few were awake. Most of the crew had retired for the night, with only a skeleton crew at stations. None of those men noticed the approach of three small vessels from the direction of Iran.

The small boats pulled up alongside the merchantman, slowing to match speed with it. The noise of the outboard motors were drowned by the whine of machinery and the churning of the ocean. “Quickly,” Usaym said, “Get the ropes secured.” Long, knotted ropes with grappling hooks attached were thrown up the side of the vessel, catching on the railings. Usaym slung his weapon over his shoulder, an Iranian made KL-7.62 assault rifle, before saying, “Onward, my brothers. To victory or Paradise. Glory to Allah.”

Slowly, one by one, the hijackers climbed aboard. Months of planning, training, and preparation had gone into this raid. Usaym knew this, just as he knew that the Zionists and their American lapdogs would take action once he made this attack known. Usaym was reminded of a verse from the Noble Quran. And when those who disbelieve were plotting against thee, O Muhammad, to make thee prisoner, or to kill thee or drive thee forth; they plotted well, but Allah plotted also; and Allah is the best of plotters. And it was this knowledge, the knowledge that Allah was truly on his side, that steadied Usaym’s nerves as he set himself to his task.

It took them mere moments to ridge the bridge. The radioman and the helmsman were both unarmed and surrendered quickly. Usaym sent some of the men to the engine room, to secure it, and others were sent to crew quarters, ensuring that all crew members were accounted for.

From boarding to when the ship was fully secured took a bare twenty minutes. Usaym saw to it that the vessel was maintained on its original heading, all the better to avoid detection until they were ready.

The following morning, a video feed appeared online, streaming across several different sites. Usaym stood behind the crewmembers, his face covered, rifle in hand. BREAKING NEWS, AFGHANISTAN - Stunning and very disturbing news out of Afghanistan as the world awakes this morning. Taliban fighters have launched a full assault in the regional capital of Qala e Naw, in the northwest of the country. Unconfirmed reports are coming in that executions of Government forces in the city are ongoing. Overnight, a flood of gunfire and explosions ripped through the city, with residents waking up to a complete hellscape - pictures show armored vehicles parading through the streets, with

Taliban fighters carrying the heads of slain soldiers of the Afghan government atop them. The Taliban has made these moves as part of a series of attacks and operations against Coalition forces in the region over the past few weeks.. This comes as polls in both the US and USSR show that popular opinion has turned against the nearly 20-year long war. We had the opportunity to have an exclusive, but brief video interview with an Afghani woman living in Qala e Naw, shortly before the Taliban captured the city.

Interviewer: Were you at all surprised when the Taliban began moving closer to your city?

Afghani Woman: Not at all, they have been ignored but the Americans and Russians while they have been, up! In the mountains, hiding in the caves.. Us Afghans, we know the landscape. They are getting the boys from the families and making them into fighters!

Interviewer: Do you think that the US or the USSR is doing enough to combat the Taliban?

Afghani Woman: You have to come and get the...the people, and make them know how the Taliban is! We Afghanis know how they are with the girls and our schools and the Sharia, they are not...not know what they do! You need to tell the Americans and the Russians to help us!

Several days ago in the Soviet city of Vladivostok, Soviet President Vasily Orlov and North Korean leader Kim Yo-Jong announced to the world a surprising turn of events. North Korea committed to denuclearization to be facilitated by the USSR. In addition, commitments on ending religious and political oppression were made by the new North Korean leader. In return for these steps, the Kremlin initiated a large-scale humanitarian effort which has seen several large planeloads of humanitarian aid enter the DPRK.

North Korea watchers in South Korea, the US, and the USSR have all generally seemed to take a stance of skeptical optimism with this development. When asked for comment, a spokesperson for the White House called the denuclearization agreement, “an historic achievement towards peace on the Korean Peninsula.” In an official statement from Soviet President Orlov, the President said “It is with great hope and anticipation that, Lord willing, what has transpired in Vladivokstok will herald a new age for the Korean Peninsula, the region, and the world.”

In similar statements, a spokesman for the Blue House was quoted as saying “We greatly look forward to these developments and are ready and willing to engage in talks and actions to bring peace to our peninsula.” United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres released a short statement in which he likewise said “The recent developments on the Korean Peninsula are cause for great optimism. We would like to congratulate all sides involved for pursuing peace and denuclearization.”

In recent days several major changes have been announced by the new Cuban president, Miguel Diaz Canal. Notably, the freedom of the press, assembly, and speech have added to a national referendum and are all widely expected to pass by a very large margin.

This major development has left policymakers around the world paying close attention to the island nation, and some speculating that the US might shift its stance on Cuba if these reforms actually materialize. In a comment made at a press conference, President Wilkerson called the reforms, “a step in the right direction,” but followed that up with, “The ability of the President to exclude writers and other media from publishing their works is a deeply concerning retention of many of the repressive practices of the previous regime. I can only hope that this remains a temporary measure and is abandoned.”

The UN Secretary-General gave a short statement on the matter saying “The changes occurring in Cuba are indeed something to celebrate. It is my hope that they are fully implemented and we can see the island fully join the community of nations.” Luis Almagro, the Organization of American States Secretary-General, released a very similar sentiment when he said “The OAS optimistically looks toward the changes occurring in Cuba. Hopefully, we will see these plans fully materialize.”
