Occultism and Magick in YN || (Questionnaire + Survey)

Postby Evergar » Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:28 pm

You may be asking yourself, "What is occultism? What is magick?" Here are a few basic definitions.

Occultism
Merriam-Webster: "belief in or study of the action or influence of supernatural or supernormal powers"
Collins English: "belief in and the study and practice of magic, astrology, etc."

Magick
Cambridge: "the use of special powers to make things happen that would usually be impossible"
Spiritual Nature Magazine: "a set of techniques and approaches which can be used to extend the limits of achievable reality"

In essence, the occult and magick are extensions of spirituality, of religious practice. What cannot simply be accomplished through belief, prayer, meditation, or reading alone, you did with the help of mystical ritual, supernatural enhancement.

Examples of Occultism:
— Witchcraft
— Alchemy
— Astrology
— Performing an Exorcism
— Shamanism

Examples of Magick:
— Necromancy
— Cursing Objects or People
— Fortunetelling
— Vampirism
— Astral Projection

Until very recently, the occult and magick had a global notorious reputation for inviting in wickedness, sinfulness, immorality, even the Devil himself and demonic forces. In the 21st century, though, attitudes have slowly transformed and, once again, they are gaining the true understanding that they are in the world.

So, let's see how your nation relates to the occult and magick, if at all! I would love to see your results.

(Cultural Insight - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Why do your people study and/or practice occultism and magick?
They believe that it can be used for self-defence and healing. The only known method of healing consists of plant "witchcraft". Proto-Yasneism didn't really have anything to do with occultism and magick, so it is speculated that when the Crnarussians adopted the religion, their traditions and plant knowledge stuck.

(Cultural Insight II - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
How does occultism and magick influence and interrelate with the religious beliefs and activities of the communities in your country?
Crnarussian Yasneism has been heavily influenced by the former Crnarussian beliefs. Their former goddess, Qha, has supposedly brought magick to the people to help them heal themselves. The origins of occultism in the religion are unknown.
Generally the former beliefs work quite well with Yasneism. For example, one of the core beliefs of Yasneism is "universal fairness". Those who have been stripped of certain abilities at birth (not ones caused), might have a stronger ability in witchcraft. The belief in universal fairness can cause distress sometimes, as some people seem to reach so much by disadvantaging others, but in the combination of occultism and magick, it starts to make more "sense".

(Cultural Insight III - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Are there any famous or notable events, groups, secret sects, cults, or industries that are known for involvement with the subjects of occultism and magick?
Well there are the earlier mentioned Chertovcy.

(Misc. - Open Response)
1) What does your country's top leader think of occultism and magick?
It is a gift from Qha.
2) What does your country's scientific community think of occultism and magick?
The very early forms of a scientific community see the bonuses in the research of plants. Both practices are leading the nation into an age of medicine.

Useful to save soldiers' lives, the small division of "witches" are mostly used as healers
4) How superstitious are your country's people?
Very.
5) Do your country's people believe in bad luck, omens, or mythical creatures?
Yes, very. Some mythical creatures like the rusalka or the domovoy are well known in the Crnarussian households.
[b]6) Are there any funny national incidents that have happened in your country which involved occultism and magick?

In the early days of the nation, a foreign king visited Crnarus'. On his first day, he often talked how "stupid" the Crnarussians were for practicing magick and even supposedly insulted the tsar. Later that day, he collapsed after dinner. The Tsar made an announcement where he stated that the one who cursed the foreign king, should come to the palace that day. One woman actually arrived at the palace, thinking that she would be imprisoned. The Tsar, however, gave her an emerald, as a "thank you for cursing him unconscious". Eventually the king awoke though and travelled back to his home country. The story sparked some tensions between Crnarus' and that foreign country though.

(Be As Short or Descriptive As You Wish!)
How does your nation view Evergar?

Well Evergar doesn't really fit into our timeline (900 AD) or our world... The supposed Efergaisa though, could in theory be in the lands north of Crnarus. If they are, they would most likely be considered a related people group to the Germano-Statists in the southwest of the Ærellian continent and seen as a slightly underdeveloped tribe, but also religiously closer to the Gallachians to the west of Crnarus.

1) How does your government define "occultism" and "magick"?
United States federal government has no official classification or description for these things. Neither anything related to it is found in the law, constitution or any government documents.
2) How does your country's people and culture define "occultism" and "magick"?
The United States is a hugely diverse and multicultural people. There are different nationalities, ethnicities and beliefs in this great country. People range from 9th century-old beliefs to modern 21st-century beliefs. So if there is a survey in the US where people are asked these questions everyone's answer will be totally different and coming to a conclusion would be difficult. Most people don't believe in these kinds of things anymore. They're considered past myths. But there is a big minority who still believe in all these things and constantly practise these crafts. If you want the cultural definition of these things you can read our great literary works or you can watch Hollywood movies.
3) On a scale of 1-10, how open or closed is your government toward the topics of "occultism" and "magick"? [1 = Totally Open, 10 = Totally Closed]

6) To what extent in your country are forms of magick permitted/restricted? all actual magic (anything that comes from a pact with a demon) is illegal

(Legality II - Open Response)
1) If occultic practices are illegal in your country to practice, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught practicing them? life in prison to death
2) If forms of magick are illegal in your country to attempt, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught attempting them? same as above

(Legality III - Open Response)

2) Under your country's legal system, is studying magick the same as practicing magick, or is there a difference? no, studying magic purely for academic reasons is allowed

(History & Current Trends - Open Response)
1) Have your country's people had a history with occultism and magick? yes, there have been small cults serving minor demons and ghosts, then there are shamans who were prevalent in the south until the 2030s, and there's Nyi Roro Kidul, a literal ghost queen with magic powers but doesn't interfere much with humanity except marrying every sultan of Yogyakarta.
2) Is occultism and magick gaining interest, losing interest, or at about the same level of interest as it was 20 years ago? Losing interest

(Cultural Insight - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Why do your people study and/or practice occultism and magick? Studying is usually done out of curiosity and for the simple sake of science, while practice is done out of a desire for immorality, wealth, youth, power, or all four.

(Cultural Insight II - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
How does occultism and magick influence and interrelate with the religious beliefs and activities of the communities in your country? Magic is the antithesis of religion, so you can probably tell.

(Cultural Insight III - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Are there any famous or notable events, groups, secret sects, cults, or industries that are known for involvement with the subjects of occultism and magick?

Some pre-unification construction companies are known to use human sacrifices to protect their buildings, while less ethical restaurants employ ghosts and/or demons to help their businesses. Shamans have an entire industry of their own, being middlemen for ghosts who carry out assassinations, assault, theft, robbery, etc, basically irl shaman stuff.

(Social Tolerance - Short Answer & Open Response)
1) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's education system? yes
—(To what extent?) discussions and research on the subject are completely legal, if rather controversial, with universities having entire majors studying the stuff. The problem is when they actually start making deals with ghosts/demons and practicing magic.
2) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's healthcare system? no
—(To what extent?) there is simply no place for the study of magic in healthcare. It's like asking if there are any car mechanics working in hospitals.
3) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's military? yes
—(To what extent?) the study of magic is actually a viable option for R&D, as there might be ways to harness magical energy morally, without any involvement with demons, as weapons
4) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's government? yes
—(To what extent?) in finding ways to cheat/subvert/exploit ghosts and demons to depower them or kill them, plus simply researching for the sake of research and science.
5) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's jails and prisons? no, not really
—(To what extent?)
6) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's workplace? outside of related industries? Probably not
—(To what extent?)

(Misc. - Open Response)
1) What does your country's top leader think of occultism and magick? a dangerous power source that shouldn't be taken lightly, but might have useful applications once we figure out how to get the power without making deals and committing idolatry.
2) What does your country's scientific community think of occultism and magick? a possible source of sustainable energy, or something that could end humanity
3) What does your country's military leadership think of occultism and magick? "the more we know about demons, the better we can kill them"
4) How superstitious are your country's people? it's not superstition if it's true
5) Do your country's people believe in bad luck, omens, or mythical creatures? irl "omens" and "mythical creatures" are studied phenomenon and regular animals respectively in this universe
6) Are there any funny national incidents that have happened in your country which involved occultism and magick? anecdotal stories such as finding a tuyul run away stark naked after being found sneaking into a house to take a bath, shamans being arrested for minor crimes despite having committed much worse, and so on

1) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the types of occultic practices marked above? It has always been legal
2) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the forms of magick marked above? Magic has always been lega
3) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize occultic practices? Some sects tried to purge from their own communities but never a national movement as it would never be seen by unicorn aristocracy.
4) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize forms of magick?Same as above
5) To what extent in your country are occultic practices permitted/restricted? The law allows for the free expression of magic and religious rites and does not criminalize magic itself but only the consequences.
6) To what extent in your country are forms of magick permitted/restricted? Magic is sort of self-regulating, in that orders, covens, temples, etc will all have their own rules on magic and members who flout or break the rules may be expelled or blackballed. The federal government is officially neutral in such matters but the Emperor is a mage, like all of the aristocracy, there are long lines of hereditary witches and wizards, and even priests too.

(Legality II - Open Response)
1) If occultic practices are illegal in your country to practice, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught practicing them? n/a, depends on the group rules, not a legal matter.
2) If forms of magick are illegal in your country to attempt, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught attempting them? N/A, it all depends on the order's rules

(Legality III - Open Response)
1) Under your country's legal system, is studying occultism the same as performing occultism, or is there a difference? No, occult needs knowledge
2) Under your country's legal system, is studying magick the same as practicing magick, or is there a difference? Well, non magic users can learn about how magic works without having the ability to do it, and neither are legally restricted nominally.

(History & Current Trends - Open Response)
1) Have your country's people had a history with occultism and magick? Yes
2) Is occultism and magick gaining interest, losing interest, or at about the same level of interest as it was 20 years ago? Magic is having a revival of new innovations so it is becoming more passionately popular
3) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the most on average? (By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.) Unicorns, since they have, and any gender can be a proficient magic user, though some types like witches tend to be more female, but male and non-binary witches exist. Wizard is not gender locked, but it is a translation for Zauberer, but sorcerer is also a translation. In German, Hexe means witch. However, Magi is a Latin term that Roman Harmonism uses for nearly all magic users.
4) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the least on average? (By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.) Earth Ponies for equines, some humans ignore it to some degree. Lower class usually.
5) Does your younger population (12-39) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Positively
6) Does your older population (40+) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Positively
7) Is occultism and magick connected to one or more religions (real or fictional) in your society? Yes, all religions in fact.
8) Are there any extremist groups, political, religious, or otherwise, that are known to be associated with occultism and magick? What can be said about them? Some groups might have certain or specific magic uses or policies on it

(Cultural Insight - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Why do your people study and/or practice occultism and magick? To learn more about it, to perfect their skills, and so on. Or even curiosity.

(Cultural Insight II - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
How does occultism and magick influence and interrelate with the religious beliefs and activities of the communities in your country? Our religion is magic. Since magic is one of the core elements of Harmony, often called the Queen Star of Harmony (Magi Regina Stellarum Harmoniae) and all of the clergy uses magic to varying degrees. Every creature has some magic in them.

(Cultural Insight III - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Are there any famous or notable events, groups, secret sects, cults, or industries that are known for involvement with the subjects of occultism and magick? We have many sects, mystery cults, and societies dedicated to magic and the so called occult. In the 16-17th centuries were a time of great change but also strife and disorder. Many sects challenged each other to the point of civil war. Even some wished to purge certain magic users and led to some societies going underground in secret, but many Seers believe we are in an age of world magic revival.

(Social Tolerance - Short Answer & Open Response)
1) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's education system?
—(To what extent?) Magic can be learned in school. In fact, unicorns always take classes on basic magic as yearlings. But not all magic is formally learned, and priestly seminaries are closest we have to witch or wizard schools, in the sense that they teach ritual as right rituals are important for Harmonist priestesses and priests. typically a master-apprentice format is common rather than academic classes. Sarcedotes (a sarcedos) are the clergy.
2) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's healthcare system?
—(To what extent?) Healers were the backbone of our medical practices for centuries and millennia even. Though modern medicine has challenged the primacy of healing magic, but some healer mages have entered medicine and have combined both traditional magic and modern technology to be some of the best doctors in the land. So a lot of doctors are unicorns, but some pegasus, earth horse, and other beings as doctors exist. Though typically we try to keep species the same between doctor and patient, but sometimes ponies have healed humans, elves, griffons, and so on.
3) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's military?
—(To what extent?) Magical weapons have always been a key part of specialist soldiers and officers. Even pegasus air force squadrons are technically magical too.
4) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's government?
—(To what extent?) Very much, but also a lot of the rulers are unicorns and therefore we are ruled by magic users.
5) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's jails and prisons?
—(To what extent?) Prisons and Jails are currently being phased out with alternatives, but historically magic using prisoners would be restricted, and often maximum security facilities were designed to be magic proof, preventing one from teleporting out of the prison. Unicorns may have to wear a magic suppression ring on their horn if placed under maximal lockdown, but prison chaplains allow the use of magic in rituals only and they have to make sure that they do not use any combat or escape magic.
6) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's workplace?
—(To what extent?) Many professions use magic and even so, a unicorn worker uses magic in their routine all the time, even if it is basic stuff like telekinesis to move objects around, or they might write with a pen suspended magic, or type that way too. Unicorns can be found in almost any trade. As their telekinetic magic gives them an edge, but also pegasus workers are just desired too, and of course earth pony workers are also very desired for their strength and shamanistic connection to the Earth and Nature, and zebras fill a gap between the horses and unicorns.

(Misc. - Open Response)
1) What does your country's top leader think of occultism and magick? Very highly since he is literally a sorcerer and trained in the imperial family's way of magic.
2) What does your country's scientific community think of occultism and magick? Very highly since many scientists are also magic users, but not all scientists, unicorn scientists synthesize both, and they have been alchemists and artificers.
3) What does your country's military leadership think of occultism and magick? Very highly especially among unicorn officers, but pegasi magic is just as valued, if not more especially in the Air Force and Navy.
4) How superstitious are your country's people? A fair amount but not too much, depends on many things, rural people are stereotyped as being more superstitious, ironically Earth Horses are that, not unicorns or pegasi.

6) Are there any funny national incidents that have happened in your country which involved occultism and magick? Many countless examples especially when adventurous princesses and princes aim to save cities and towns from monsters with their friends, or a witch or wizard has to clean up their apprentices' messes or fight a rival.

Freedom of religion is apart of the constitution. Justosia's founders foresaw the world becoming radically different in the future. A marketing ploy almost. Although law, it would virtually never be enforced in an Occultist's case. If a touring Wiccan was assaulted by a Christian on Imperial soil, local authorities would just look the other way. The empire is overwhelmingly Christian & the national faith is the states' Christian Church.

4) How superstitious are your country's people? Quite superstitious, whereas they take care to not show superstitions to publicily even though "Mild superstitions, like the refusal to follow a road recently crossed by a black cat, are to be tolerated and not prosecuted" according to a Presidential Order.
[b]5) Do your country's people believe in bad luck, omens, or mythical creatures?
Yes, see above.
6) Are there any funny national incidents that have happened in your country which involved occultism and magick? Not really

1) How does your government define "occultism" and "magick"?
From the First Constitution of TurtleShroom:
TurtleShroom wrote:
ARTICLE VI
CONGRESS

[...]

SECTION SIX: CONGRESS SHALL HAVE THE POWER:

33) To criminalize and punish witchcraft and all forms of magick, sorcery, use or command of demons, and summoning of evil or evil beings by unnatural or unclean manners, but no creature may be put to death for this crime.

34) To criminalize Worship and Adoration of Satan or his angels, Beelzebub, Baal, or any god explicitly listed, by an actual name in the Holy Scriptures as false, and list the punishments for the same, but the punishment shall not incur death.

This definition remains more or less in place even after the Second Constitution of TurtleShroom was ratified.

TurtleShroom's definition of sorcery and occultism fall in line with Biblical theology and both Christian and the pre-Christian, pagan traditional demonology sourced from the Tengriists of pre-Christian TurtleShroom. Non-Christian influences are recognized as supplementary to the same.

Included in this prohibition are all "white" uses of sorcery, even healing. TS law does not consider the outcome or action of magic relevant to prosecution.

There are certain exemptions that can be deemed holy: Christian mysticism, shamanism, trances through incense (etc.), visions, faith healing, miracles, and so on are separated for matters of both religious freedom and origin.

Furthermore, the weak telekinetic and psychic abilities of sapient mushrooms- which have no limbs or internal organs -is exempt because it provides for their locomotion and manipulation, something they cannot sustain without it. Exploring those powers, however, and attempting to become stronger or better at them- for instance, to exceed a being with limb's abilities of manipulating objects -is a crime.

2) How does your country's people and culture define "occultism" and "magick"?
See above.

3) On a scale of 1-10, how open or closed is your government toward the topics of "occultism" and "magick"? Ten

4) On a scale of 1-10, how open or closed is your country's people and culture toward the topics of "occultism" and "magick"? [1 = Totally Open, 10 = Totally Closed]

1) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the types of occultic practices marked above?
These prohibitions predate the establishment of TurtleShroom.

2) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the forms of magick marked above?
These prohibitions predate the establishment of TurtleShroom.

3) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize occultic practices? N/A
4) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize forms of magick? N/A
5) To what extent in your country are occultic practices permitted/restricted? See above.
6) To what extent in your country are forms of magick permitted/restricted? See above.

(Legality II - Open Response)
1) If occultic practices are illegal in your country to practice, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught practicing them?
It depends entirely on the crime. Astrologists and horoscope writers are normally just fined. Fortune tellers rarely get more than five years in prison (although they can get up to thirty).

2) If forms of magick are illegal in your country to attempt, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught attempting them?
A TurtleShroomer cannot be executed for mere sorcery; sorcery is punishable by eighty years in prison. Certain types of sorcery, however, are additional crimes that can carry higher penalties.

Necromancy is punishable, fittingly, by summary death on sight. They are an immediate threat that must be removed before they can animate corpses. This is because TS has dealt with actual zombies in the past and, in the first-ever wave, required foreign assistance to drive them out.

Vampires are summarily executed on sight. Due process does not apply to demonic beings.

Successful summoning of a demon, beyond a reasonable doubt, is punishable by death if convicted.

Attempted summoning of a demon, especially if it fails, is punished by a seventy-two hour internment for the purpose of studies and watching for side-effects, followed by a forced exorcism. After this, a trial is held to determine guilt or innocence, but only if the creature is successfully exorcised or avoided possession or demonic influence to begin with.

Those successfully possessed and that cannot be exorcised are subject to permanent containment until exorcism can be successfully performed. Once a person is possessed, they are no longer legally just a person, but a vessel with a demon inside. For those who willingly called the demon or sought out possession, he possessed creature is executed if possible and the demon inside is destroyed, thrown back to Hell, or otherwise neutralized as a threat. However, there are several hundred willingly possessed creatures held in chains at TurtleShroomer black sites, because the demons were too powerful to be released back out of the possessed person.

Those possessed due to no fault on their own are forcibly exorcised and released, if possible and as soon as possible. They cannot be charged with crimes.

Anti-sorcery and matters of demonology are handled by the TurtleShroomian Inquisition. The Inquisition's primary goal is to enforce sexual law, such as the crimes of fornication, sodomy, buggery, and so on. However, the Inquisition also has a religious department dealing with this exact matter. TurtleShroom has hired tens of thousands of professional exorcists, both Christian and heathen, and most Christian denominations offer exorcism classes for those who have demonstrated the Spiritual Gift of Casting Out Demons. Many pagans and unbelievers do the same and are encouraged to offer such assistance.

Accidental summoning of a demon is punishable by forced exorcism, community service (usually to a religious body), and fines at most. Many are not fined or prosecuted at all.

If convicted, Satanism is illegal and punished by between twenty years and life in prison or death, depending on the context, actions taken, and propagation.

(Legality III - Open Response)
1) Under your country's legal system, is studying occultism the same as performing occultism, or is there a difference?
Studying occultism can only be done within academic, theological, seminary, or demonology work, and only within the consent of a creature's religious authorities (if any), or any confederal or local government). Studying with intent to learn the practices is equal to practicing.

2) Under your country's legal system, is studying magick the same as practicing magick, or is there a difference? See the previous question.

(History & Current Trends - Open Response)
1) Have your country's people had a history with occultism and magick?
Yes. For instance, vampires that are sighted in TurtleShroom are summarily executed; the country has been considered vampire-free since 1842 AD. TurtleShroomers know and believe that sorcery is real and see it as part of demonology and the forces of Satan.

2) Is occultism and magick gaining interest, losing interest, or at about the same level of interest as it was 20 years ago? Interest is increasing in stopping it.
3) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the most on average?
Criminals.

4) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the least on average?
Everyone else.

5) Does your younger population (12-39) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Neutrality is creeping in, but the vast majority oppose it entirely.
6) Does your older population (40+) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Negatively.
7) Is occultism and magick connected to one or more religions (real or fictional) in your society? Satanism, which is illegal, has some of the largest groups of sorcerers. Oriental religions, like Shintoism, have occasional occultists, but most of them operate within the legal and spiritual restrictions of a shaman. Likewise, paganism is full of legal shamanism, too.
8) Are there any extremist groups, political, religious, or otherwise, that are known to be associated with occultism and magick? Yes. Underground sorcerers and cults exist and are regularly repressed by TurtleShroomian authorities, namely the Inquisition. The worst threats are neutralized by a combination of the military, Inquisitors, and October Death Squadsmen (that is, professional monster hunters, not a death squad in the human sense).

(Cultural Insight - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Why do your people study and/or practice occultism and magick?
Those who study it either want to learn it or, most commonly, want to learn to fight it. Theologians, both professional and lay, are often fascinated by the realms of demonology and SpirituaL Warfare, which has long led people to learn how to oppose the forces of darkness.

On the opposite side, Christianity and Judaism both teach that sorcery is an act of aggression; one seeks it to obtain power over others or over nature. It is seen as a weapon and a danger to all TurtleShroomers.

Others turn to it in desparation: those who live far from a hospital may forsake a shaman or faith healer and seek an isolated witch-doctor to cure their offspring. Or, they may take it up as a means to enhance their self-defense: guns can be aimed better or "upgraded" with sorcery, for example, not to mention that sorcery itself is a deadly weapon.

(Cultural Insight II - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
How does occultism and magick influence and interrelate with the religious beliefs and activities of the communities in your country?
Religious beliefs are the principle reason sorcery is outlawed and has been outlawed for the past four hundred years.

(Cultural Insight III - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Are there any famous or notable events, groups, secret sects, cults, or industries that are known for involvement with the subjects of occultism and magick?

(Social Tolerance - Short Answer & Open Response)
1) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's education system?
Never. Young TurtleShroomers are taught how to resist sorcery, as well as "just saying no", and are shown the often graphic consequences and hazards of being overpowered.

—(To what extent?) Extreme opposition.

2) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's healthcare system?
Prayer, faith healing, miracles, and shamanism are not considered occultism or sorcery, nor are traditional means of medicine and the like.

—(To what extent?)
The healthcare system takes traditional medicine, prayer, faith healing, miracles, and shamanism seriously. With the exception of prayer and the Sacrament of the Anointing With Holy Oil, these techniques are considered back up plans, continuity attempts, and even supplementary to the primary deployment of science-based medicine.

The State Hospital Service, which is TurtleShroom's mental health system, has exorcists in every hospital, in case a misdiagnosis classified a madman as mentally ill instead of possessed or under demonic influence.

3) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's military?
Never. There exist actual military divisions, as well as Militiamen (a separate, lay body akin to a National Guard), aiding in the destruction of sorcery rings, occultists, and so on that have enough power to resist the normal powers of the justice system. This is one of the only times the military can be deployed without matters of Posse Comatatus absent immediate military threats prohibiting it.

—(To what extent?)
Soldiers are trained to deal with occultist and magical threats, especially in combat abroad, but also in rare cases where they are deployed to stop a domestic witch coven, cult, or phenomena that has become too powerful for civilians to eliminate.

4) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's government? See above.
—(To what extent?) See above.

5) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's jails and prisons?
Sorcery and occultism are reasons for a duly convicted TurtleShroomer to be in prison.

—(To what extent?) See above.

6) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's workplace?
See above. That said, remember that shamanism, faith healing, prayer, miracles, and so on are not seen as sorcery and have been commercialized, for better or worse.

—(To what extent?)

(Misc. - Open Response)
1) What does your country's top leader think of occultism and magick?
[list]
[*]Tsar Tammy Olvia, as a military general, has overseen anti-magic deployments and was instructed on fighting it, as all TurtleShroomian soldiers are. They hate it.
[*]Tsar Maven Outtacountry has faced the most wanted creature in TurtleShroom- a powerful sorcerer from what was Comrade Commissar named Norah -and fears both her and sorcery.
[*]Tsar Grigory Wip practices Tengriism and his religion embraces and requires shamanism, mysticism, and so on. He is attuned to these matters and has an understanding of what is and is not Kosher for his pagan beliefs.

2) What does your country's scientific community think of occultism and magick?
Magic is taken deathly serious by TurtleShrioomian

3) What does your country's military leadership think of occultism and magick?
You have repeated this question several times. See above.

4) How superstitious are your country's people?
Superstitution, habits, and myths exist among both TurtleShroomers and TurtleShroomers of foreign origin. Despite attempts to counter it, Fung Shui is still a big aspect of the Oriental population and has even bled over into TS architecture as demand for it has risen.

5) Do your country's people believe in bad luck, omens, or mythical creatures?
Yes, on all accounts. Bad luck is just bad luck. Omens are signs from God and any prophets He may send. Mythical creatures are believed in because there are confirmed sightings, and even documentation and photographs.

6) Are there any funny national incidents that have happened in your country which involved occultism and magick?
Well, there was this one time when Jonesboro got covered in pink frosting after an ant-farmer tried to summon a demonic shark... which turned out to just be a real shark, and that sucker got lodged into an oil refinery. { OOC: This is a canonical Issue. }

How does your nation view Evergar?
Evergar is seen as an enemy of TurtleShroom due to its Anti-Abrahamic Edict. It considers Christianity, Judaism, and even Islam as illegal and persecutes Believers, Jews, and Muslims alike. Evergar's policies officially prohibit Abrahamic religions and the country refuses to trade with those that endorse them.

Consequently, Evergar has been under full embargo against all TurtleShroomian exports and aid, and has been treated this way since the two countries first encountered each other.

1) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the types of occultic practices marked above? It has always been legal, as it is protected under freedom of religion
2) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the forms of magick marked above? Magic has always been legal, as it is protected under freedom of religion
3) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize occultic practices? Some hardcore christians in the nation have tried to ban it, but those bans were shut down as they were deemed unconstitutional
4) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize forms of magick? Some christians or atheists oppose it but they have always been voted out
5) To what extent in your country are occultic practices permitted/restricted? The only place it is banned is in the teachings of public education, freedom of religion is allowed but religious ideologies cannot be forced onto others, so only secular topics can be taught in schools
6) To what extent in your country are forms of magick permitted/restricted? Occultia is a region that has a very high population of witches/warlocks where both the occult and magick are allowed, it is legal as long as no person is harmed without consent, then charges of assault or whatever crime was done

(Legality II - Open Response)
1) If occultic practices are illegal in your country to practice, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught practicing them? It is all protected under freedom of religion, so it is not punished
2) If forms of magick are illegal in your country to attempt, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught attempting them? Someone can only be punished if unconsensual harm was done to a person or animal. Animal cruelty is typically punished through being left with a dangerous animal without weapons as a sort of "karma" If harm was done to a person without their consent they may be subject to arena battles with humans or being mauled to death, depending on how much harm was done. For instance vampirism would only be legal with consent.

(Legality III - Open Response)
1) Under your country's legal system, is studying occultism the same as performing occultism, or is there a difference? Under the federal government, it is the same, but under Occultia's cults someone who has more experience and practices instead of studying is typically seen as higher up
2) Under your country's legal system, is studying magick the same as practicing magick, or is there a difference? Someone cannot be punished for say reading a book about slitting someone open for religious sacrifices as it is protected under freedom of expression, but actually doing it could land you the death penalty, since it is classed as murder. But most magick is legal as long as it is done with consent, say if someone consented to having their blood let they could do it.

(History & Current Trends - Open Response)
1) Have your country's people had a history with occultism and magick? Yes
2) Is occultism and magick gaining interest, losing interest, or at about the same level of interest as it was 20 years ago? It has become increasingly popular among certain groups, but the government has always been secular.
3) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the most on average? (By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.) Typically teens and young adults, but it isn't uncommon for older people to participate. Although occultism/magick isn't taught in schools schools also teach you to have an open mind so most people find these groups online.
4) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the least on average? (By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.) Scientists or anyone who wants to play a role in government, as many are atheist
5) Does your younger population (12-39) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Positively, but some find it cringey.
6) Does your older population (40+) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Mostly negatively, but there are some exceptions.
7) Is occultism and magick connected to one or more religions (real or fictional) in your society? Yes, but not all.
8) Are there any extremist groups, political, religious, or otherwise, that are known to be associated with occultism and magick? What can be said about them? Some groups might have certain or specific magic uses or policies on it
The whole region of Occultia was founded as a more religious base separate from the more secular Vulcania and Atlantia regions, which typically house engineers and scientists. Many cults can be seen rivaling with each other, and the government had to step in to give different cults different plots of land to avoid conflict. Almost everyone can be seen practicing magick/occultism in the area, and witch shops are very common. This gives the area a unique culture separate from the rest of the nation.

(Answer Only If Applicable.)
How does occultism and magick influence and interrelate with the religious beliefs and activities of the communities in your country? It has caused the whole community of Occultia to form. Most people are either atheist or highly spiritual, and the ones that are spiritual mainly live on Occultia's forests, due to the large amounts of wildlife and being far less industrialized.

(Cultural Insight III - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Are there any famous or notable events, groups, secret sects, cults, or industries that are known for involvement with the subjects of occultism and magick? Nearly all of Occultia is filled with rivalries between various cults, so much so that they all had to be given a distinct plot of land to avoid fighting. But even then there is still many fighting between the cults.

(Social Tolerance - Short Answer & Open Response)
1) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's education system?

2) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's healthcare system?
—(To what extent?) Any procedure without a scientific backing is not allowed in hospitals
3) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's military?
—(To what extent?) The military only uses secular technology and doesn't allow these methods to be used in combat, but if you are using tarot cards in your cabin you won't be punished.
4) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's government?
—(To what extent?) Government can only be about secular topics, but you won't be punished for having a religious belief as it falls under freedom of religion.
5) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's jails and prisons?
—(To what extent?) The state has banned jails and prisons as they are deemed unethical.
6) Is occultism and magick tolerated in your country's workplace?

1) What does your country's top leader think of occultism and magick? Believes in spirits and summoning, but is skeptical of the extremists.
2) What does your country's scientific community think of occultism and magick? It is typically seen as phony and many scientists try to disprove the afterlife or spirits, but some may actually use scientific theories to explain their own beliefs.
3) What does your country's military leadership think of occultism and magick? Spiritualism has no use in war, but some soldiers see it as a coping mechanism to make them less fearful of death, and soldiers carrying around religious objects are tolerated, as long as they still follow orders.
4) How superstitious are your country's people? Not very much, but Occultia and the northern Boralia is far more superstitious than other regions.
5) Do your country's people believe in bad luck, omens, or mythical creatures? Scientists have been able to recreate some mythical creatures like dragons and pegasi from DNA, so they have become real. Most superstitious people also believe in bad luck, but only heavily religious people believe in omens.

It was legalized implicitly when the nation was founded in 1924 without any sort of legal system.

2) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the forms of magick marked above?
See above.

3) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize occultic practices?
No one in Corporoat takes calls to outlaw things seriously.

4) Has there been or is there currently a movement in your country to criminalize/decriminalize forms of magick?
See above.

5) To what extent in your country are occultic practices permitted/restricted?
If you can do it and all parties consent, you're allowed. If one or more parties don't consent, though, they have to sort that out themselves.

6) To what extent in your country are forms of magick permitted/restricted?
See above.

(Legality II - Open Response)
1) If occultic practices are illegal in your country to practice, what are the possible charges and/or punishments that may be given to those who are caught practicing them?

No, but certain supernatural (non-magical/occult) occurrences do happen from time to time.

2) Is occultism and magick gaining interest, losing interest, or at about the same level of interest as it was 20 years ago?
Occultism/magick had a boost in popularity after a wizard was discovered, but interest quickly waned after economists pointed out that the wizard's ability to create infinite food threatened to destabilize the agriculture industry.

3) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the most on average? (By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.)
Mostly people who have free time on their hands and weren't exposed to it from a young age. (This type of stuff is a lot more alluring to people who didn't grow up with it)

4) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the least on average? (By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.)
Wealthy businesspeople and economists (See the wizard story)

5) Does your younger population (12-39) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively?
Everyone is still pretty neutral on the topic of occult practices, except when they have to be subjected to them.

6) Does your older population (40+) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively?
Older people are a little more accepting since they've spent a longer time not knowing magick might be real.

7) Is occultism and magick connected to one or more religions (real or fictional) in your society?
Not any religion that the average citizen practices

8) Are there any extremist groups, political, religious, or otherwise, that are known to be associated with occultism and magick? What can be said about them?
That one wizard does have a small following, but they're harmless. (The wizard refuses to teach them anything)

(Cultural Insight - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
Why do your people study and/or practice occultism and magick?
Certain people want to make big changes, but don't have the influence or resources. Since anything that could be even remotely construed as communism is deeply shunned by society, they often turn to ways to make themselves more powerful.

(Cultural Insight II - Open Response)
(Answer Only If Applicable.)
How does occultism and magick influence and interrelate with the religious beliefs and activities of the communities in your country?
N/A

Are there any famous or notable events, groups, secret sects, cults, or industries that are known for involvement with the subjects of occultism and magick?
There are loads of scammers who try to get people to join "secret cults" with "real magical abilities", but only that one wizard has any actual powers.

1) What does your country's top leader think of occultism and magick?
Anna from Reception doesn't want anything to do with the occult movement. In fact, if she had it her way, she wouldn't have anything to do with leading the nation, either.

2) What does your country's scientific community think of occultism and magick?
The scientific community is still drooling over the prospect of generating infinite food using sorcery, but industry tycoons refuse to let them research it.

3) What does your country's military leadership think of occultism and magick?
Corporoat has no military.

4) How superstitious are your country's people?
The average citizen doesn't believe much of what they can't see, but since supernatural events have been documented, they can be a little superstitious.

5) Do your country's people believe in bad luck, omens, or mythical creatures?
Not very much beyond when they need an excuse for why something went wrong.

6) Are there any funny national incidents that have happened in your country which involved occultism and magick?
The wizard that caught everyone's attention seems to only have the power to manipulate sugar and sweet foods. Nonetheless, every food industry lobbyist went ballistic, trying to convince the leadership to arrest the wizard, despite the fact that Corporoat has no police or penal system.

1) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the types of occultic practices marked above? There has been no legislation specifically legalizing nor outlawing these practices, but many are assumed to be legal due to the association with religion. There have been a few court cases that have add more legitimacy to such practices, the most notable one being in 1922 when the United Realms Appellate Court for the Southern Realms overturned the conviction of a shaman for the death of a 10-year-old boy during an exorcism.
2) When did your government officially legalize/outlaw the forms of magick marked above? Again, there has been no legislation specifically legalizing nor outlawing these practices, but many are assumed to be legal.

(History & Current Trends - Open Response)
1) Have your country's people had a history with occultism and magick? Yes, occultism and magick is intertwined with the country's history. Machis, the religious leaders and healers of the Mapuche faith, were a different section of society during the imperial era, technically not nobles but possessing special privileges that commoners do not possess. Traditionally held by women, they often served as advisors and oracles to their community and to the rulers within the empire. Since they were the intermediaries between the physical world and the spiritual world, machis were highly respected; harming them was seen as an attack on the gods and spirits themselves, thus resulting in severe punishment.
2) Is occultism and magick gaining interest, losing interest, or at about the same level of interest as it was 20 years ago? It is about the same is it was 20 years ago.
[b]3) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the most on average?
(By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.) Typically, those who are the most interested in practicing occultism and magick are older (60+) Mapuche (indigenous) women, while younger (16-26) Mapuche women are the most interested in studying occultism and magick.
4) What kind of person in your nation tends to be interested in or active in studying or practicing occultism and magick the least on average? (By Age, Class, Sex, Race, Industry, Etc.) Typically, men are the least interested in studying or practicing occultism and magick, especially those of mestizo or European background.
5) Does your younger population (12-39) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Overall, neutrally.
6) Does your older population (40+) overall view occultism and magick positively, neutrally, or negatively? Overall, positively.
7) Is occultism and magick connected to one or more religions (real or fictional) in your society? Yes, the traditional practices and activities of occultism and magick lay the foundation of religion in the United Realms. The practices and activities can be found in Mapuche folk religion, the indigenous religion, and the Church of Oronia, the state religion that organizes Mapuche practices within a system like that of the Roman Catholic Church.
8) Are there any extremist groups, political, religious, or otherwise, that are known to be associated with occultism and magick? What can be said about them? Officially, no. But again, it is rumored that there are threats that are associated with occultism and magick (i.e., spirits, monsters, powered individuals).
