Three venues will be used per group, per matchday. Two matches will be played in each venue, and they are listed in order. Thus, on MD1, group A will have matches between 1v12 and 2v11 played in Kirkenes, 3v10 and 4v9 in Neorvins, and 5v8 and 6v7 in Redswyth.

Kelssek: A visitor's guide

Host cities
Lightwood Arena, Arvika (13,200)

Arvika is on the northern shore of the Great Cariboo Lake just a couple hundred kilometres from the northern polar circle and Surono's provincial capital with a population of around 400,000. It's known as a place to go see polar bears (not too near to town, happily) and the aurora borealis at any time of the year, at this latitude, in this part of the country, ~~localized entirely within your kitchen~~. Tourist attractions include the Arctic Museum of Digital Culture focusing particularly on video games, and the Far North Museum which does science and natural history. Visitors also come for the Midnight Sun arts and electronic music festival, held in a large park 60 km outside the city during the summer.

Maritime Road, Breton (18,700)

Breton (Breçan in Frankish) is known for the brightly-painted heritage buildings that line the streets of Fairhill. Its large natural harbour is today used as the largest base of the Kelssek Navy, and the city's naval heritage is a major feature of Shearwater, the district across the harbour from central Breton adjacent to the base. Breton also has a large student population as home to three major universities: Dartmouth University, Saints University, and the University of Haligonia. Attractions include Granville Square, Keefe's Brewery, the Maritime Museum of Kelssek, and the deliciously fresh seafood offloaded at Dartford Market.

Newham Wharf, Burnaby (18,800)

Burnaby is the centre of Kelssek's 3rd-largest metro area with a population over 7 million, nestled between the mountains and the shores of Lake Konoha. The city and its surroundings is a mecca for outdoor sports especially skiing, mountain biking, and climbing. A walk along the Seaforth Park Trail promises spectacular views of the mountains, lake, and the landmark Sanoqua Gate Bridge. Junction Beach was Kelssek's first clothing-optional beach and its adjacent Khatsalano neighbourhood was a focus of the new-age counterculture.

Harbourside Gardens, Kirkenes (19,200)

Kirkenes is the most populous city in Kelssek, a huge and bustling multicultural metropolis. The city's character comes through in neighbourhoods like Little Ariddia, Bathurst Gardens, and Lancaster Hill. Fashionable boutiques and other opportunities for bourgeois consumerism are located in the Rosewood area. The 540-metre Panopti Tower is an iconic landmark, the St. Jude Market is a good stop for fine foods or a quick meal, Melbourne Square and Caron Street are where to go out, and the Museum of Global Civilization is pretty cool to learn about history and cultures and stuff. The Loyalist Fort National Historic Site is where the enemies of the revolution holed themselves up. The city also has a lively microbrewery scene. See also the street map, and the TComm Subway.

Jardins de Carée-Boudoin, Laneux (18,900)

Laneux is the capital of Roites and tourists usually pass through the city on the way to the ski fields and hot springs of the Rempart Mountains. You could get a beer and watch people rowing on the river in Longue-Pointe I guess.

Aréna Olympique, Langlois (20,100)

Langlois is a large city on the coast of Beaulac which enjoys a relatively mild climate. Known as a city of a thousand hills, its scenic setting and colourfully-painted houses of the Côte Rouge feature on postcards, while restaurants offering the city's trademark fish stew crowd the Promenade des Brumes. The lavish architecture of the homes and haunts of the city's rich and powerful early-modern era merchant class are one of the attractions of Vielle-Ville. Langlois remains an important port and centre of Kelssek's shipbuilding industry, as well as for higher education and research, home of the Université nationale beaulacoise. Something else to see is the Gothic towers of the 900-year old Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Langlois, and there are also good wineries in the surrounding rural areas.

Bantam Yards, Latrobe (19,400)

Latrobe is a major city of over 5 million. It has a lively music and arts scene, two top research universities, and is a centre for the software, media, and auto industries. The Museum for Human Rights is a relatively new landmark just off Republic Square, the historic heart of Latrobe where visitors can take their pick from a number of brewpub and restaurant patios to patronize. The small shops, cafés, and galleries of the old city's winding alleys are a diverting way to spend an afternoon. Arts and culture sites include the Centre for the Moving Image, National Gallery of Etnier, the People's Opera House. Nagorno Park along the Yalumbia river is the city's landmark green space and dotted with art sculptures.

Eolienne Dome, Mazinaw (17,900)

Mazinaw is naturally scenic and the best views can be had with a hike through River Ravine Park, at one end of which can be found the ruins of Castle Lions. The city is architecturally unfortunate, due to its growth spurt during the time when concrete modernism was in fashion. Over the years the city has grown and absorbed the town of Perrit Wells whose historic baths have been a wellness destination for centuries. The historic town's centre has brass taps of its famous mineral water which you can fill your bottle from.

Federation Arena, Neorvins (19,100)

Neorvins is the federal capital, a middle-sized city with a metropolitan population of just over two million. It hosts a large number of public institutions and museums catering to a wide range of interests; indeed it’s the more esoteric ones that are probably more worth a visit as the most famous art pieces tend to be in Outineau or Kirkenes. These include: the National Capital Exhibition, a museum of Kelssek’s social and political history, the Royal Palace Museum, which focuses on the former royalty and the Kelssek Revolution, the Parliamentary Art Gallery, the Bank of Kelssek Monetary Experience, which makes central banking as thrilling as possible, the Museum of War and Peace, housed in a decommissioned nuclear bunker, and Polar Institute, which educates visitors on life in the far north and the history of polar exploration. Other sights to see include the Parliament of Kelssek public tours, Queen’s Market and Guilds Hall, Place Paul Langlois, Shawinigan Gate, the Revolutionaries Monument, and pleasant walks can be had in Federation Park, and Kieran Pearson Park.

Aréna St-Jacques, Outineau (20,600)

Outineau is a major city with a huge metropolitan area, it is primarily Frankish-speaking and a centre for education, technology, aerospace, engineering, and commodity futures trading. It’s also the provincial capital of Beaulac. The popular tourist things to do are to check out the historic Ville-Baptiste, the oldest part of the city, the lively and vibrant streets of the Plateau-Mont-Phare and Quartier Faubourg , look at art in the Musée des Beaux Arts and Musée pour l'art d'aujourd'hui, eat poule mouilée or viande fumée, and go to one of the music, beer, coffee, literary, comedy, and art festivals that are always going on.

Salmonwynd, Redswyth (18,400)

Redswyth is a post-industrial city that is still home to a great deal of aerospace and auto manufacturing. Its time as the industrial centre of Kelssek leaves its legacy in the city's impressive Gothic revival architecture. Dorson Quays, the banks of the Northern Canal, and Eastbourne Road are the most interesting neighbourhoods to find nightlife and interesting shops. Other tourist attractions include Redswyth Castle, the oldest portions of which date back over a thousand years, the impeccable landscaping of the University of Redswyth, the Museum of Industry which covers both factories and the labour movement, and the modern art collections of the Great Northern Gallery.

Great Northern Coliseum, Ulyanof (18,900)

Ulyanof is the provincial capital of Lupinissia, a prairie city built on agriculture industries (mostly wheat, cattle, and corn) and the Western Mutual insurance cooperative. Despite being a large city of 4 million, it’s known for a friendly, laid-back, country culture. Microbreweries and bistros are thick around Platt Place and the Lorimier district. The surrounds have got great spots for whitewater rafting. The ultramodern Art Institute of Lupinissia is the city’s newest architectural landmark.

Welcome to the 43rd edition fo the World Cup of Hockey! Atheara, despite participating in the 16th World Junior Hockey Championships, never participated in the 42nd edition of the WCoH. This time Atheara will be fixing that mistake. 17th WJHC and the 43rd WCoH. Atheara is a particularly hockey driven nation, with football and a few other sports toppling it in terms of popularity. There are many questions to be asked with this line up for the three lines. One, why so many youngsters and a whole line dedicated to them? Two, why so many English and Scottish people? Three, why not much female players? Let's start by answering these questions one by one. Because of the fact many are in disbelief and trust me, i am too.

The reason why there is an entire line of youngsters is because they are the next generation of players. Giving them experience against difficult and more experience opponents gives us the chance to see how far they can develop. And of course, this doesn't mean they will not perform. They were some of the better half of players during the two World Junior Hockey Championships, so don't think so lowly of them.

English and Scottish people are more known for their chess and football in Atheara. However, that doesn't mean they don't have hockey talent. Many of the English and Scots here have great hockey talent, and it would be a waste not to use it to the fullest potential just because they do not follow the norm of their societies. Everyone deserves better, you know?

Three, remember, male players are generally more skilled in hockey, despite the lesser amount of popularity that makes it overshadowed by chess, football, and just to name a few. The women we chose were some of the best available in Atheara. They deserve a spot, as their talent cannot be denied by gender. Equality is needed for Atheara to function, keep that in mind.

The Ko-orenite league cracked down on fighting to speed games up. Don't be surprised if the Dragonflies don't respond to a call to arms. Ice hockey is a regional (but not necessarily small) sport in Ko-oren, limited to frigid Aerellen, the temperate (but cold) northeast, and parts of the unwelcoming west coast. Venues are limited, and Aerellen's largest venue hosts multiple games per day while the season is on, so speeding up games and keeping them plannable is key. Languages used by the team are Dutch and Aerellen (Ko-orenite). Aerellen names are easily recognisable, they start with vowels, featuring many Au, Ao, Ai, Ae combinations at the start of each word. Tarrashall is also a culture that you'll run into, famous players from there include Hallady Buck and Yaller Nyan, and they often play for the West Coast Blizzards.

The league has made the move from amateurism/semi-professionalism to fully professional over the last year. To get there, some teams were moved, some merged, others folded while new teams (in different locations) sprang up to fill the void. This has left part of the fanbase bitter and resentful: their team might have moved, a 80+ year old rivalry might have disappeared, etc. The rest of the fanbase has been very welcoming: more of Ko-oren can enjoy the fastest team sport in the multiverse. Still, the league didn't exactly expand beyond its usual borders (Aerellen, the northeast, and the north coast). There's also the matter of Banija's team in Schemerdrecht: while opening up the city to ice hockey, it has taken away expansion opportunities.

Franks is a stand up goalie who plays the puck well and can be a weapon when the Stars are shorthanded. He scored a goal into an empty net during a college game last season.

DEFENCEMEN
First pair
14 Chris Walton, 27, 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. Alternate captain.
Can sometimes play on the fourth line or a penalty killing forward if needed, but he's also an at-home defenceman.
5 Jill Sanders, 25, 5-foot-7, 150 pounds
Certainly not the first woman to play for the Stars, but she's certainly the scrappiest. She willingly goes into the corner to scrum to win pucks.

Second pair
6 Mia Chretién, 34, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds.
Can move the puck in and out of the zone well. Sometimes used on the front line during penalty kills.
7 Erik Weingart, 30, 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. Second alternate captain.
He's there for both hitting and leadership on the ice.

Third pair
19 Gil Sondberg, 24, 6-foot, 185 pounds
Has surprising physicality compared to his size. He's a big hitter and he's a force in the weight room.
52 Kirk Stephens, 25, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.
Stephens is the offensive defenceman on the Stars, and often lines up as a right wing on the penalty kill. He's a threat to score a shorthanded goal.

Seventh defenseman
55 Milt Radner, 22, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds
Has youthful energy but lacks the polish needed for a spot on a main pairing.

FORWARDS
First Line
LW 19 Matt Davies, 25, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds
Lanky and fast, also with good puck movement skills, but can be relatively easy to get physical with.
C 38 Nate Barnes, 27, 5-foot-11, 189 pounds. Captain.
Best faceoff guy on the Stars, winning them at a 62 percent clip last season. Second in the league with 78 assists in 72 games.
7 RW Brett Tanguay, Jr., 20, 6-foot-1, 215 pounds
He has skill and power, and fires a blistering shot from the point. The son of the defence-minded assistant coach is as offence-minded as it gets.

Second Line
LW: 22 Dylan Bannister, 29, 6-foot, 210 pounds
Bannister replaces the now-retired Cameron Granato as the second line left wing. He has acknowledge he has big skates to fill, though perhaps not as big as also retired left wing Sylvan Turcotte's.
C: Alyssa Hannigan, 25, 5-foot-7, 149 pounds.
A great puck distributor, she often features as the first or second line centre on the power play.
RW: Calan Leftwich, 26, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds.
Plays well enough on defence to be on the checking line, but his offence keeps him on the ice in offensive situations. Could double-shift to the fourth line in case of injury.

Third Line
LW: 15 Jeff Tucker, 31, 5-foot-11, 179 pounds.
Has the versatility to play any of the three forward positions offensively, but his defence is suspect.
C: 16 Colin Yarmouth, 23, 5-foot-8, 175 pounds.
Plays a sparkplug style, but is still working on the conditioning and stamina needed to play on the first two lines. May not be able to play long minutes in extended knockout round overtime sessions.
RW:24 Ray Olendorff, 33, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.
Plays harder than most. Is now much improved in conditioning, but meshes so well with the third line that he only plays on the other lines in knockout stage matches.

Fourth Line
LW: 37 Brock Willingham, 24, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds
Takes over the enforcer role from Alan Donald, though he has more skill and a little bit less pure braun. Don't sleep on him in a fight, though.
C: 26 Cliff Sauerchuck, 30, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds
His checking and physical play are what have him playing fourth line centre, but his ability to win faceoffs and distribute the puck are why he plays centre.
RW: 44 Terré Sombulier, 24, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds
They check well, and cleanly. That's why they're fourth line.

Paul Bremerton will be returning as the Sarzonian national ice hockey team manager. So, too, will many of the players on the World Cup of Hockey 42 squad.

However, some of the biggest names from World Cups past won't be coming back.

Yes, that includes arguably Sarzonia's greatest ice hockey player ever, left wing Sylvan Turcotte, who retired after the last World Cup of Hockey. Fellow left wing and arguably the second biggest star on the team Cameron Granato is also hanging up his skates. So, too is left wing and enforcer Alan Donald.

"Those guys gave their hearts and souls to this programme," Bremerton said. "I couldn't ask them for anything more. We're going to miss all three of them for what they brought on the ice and what they brought off it." The Stars will benefit from moving one player from a potential emergency addition to the top line as Brett Tanguay, Jr. immediately earned a spot as the first line right wing. He takes that role over from Matt Davies, who moves to Turcotte's place on the left wing.

Tanguay starred for the Baby Stars Under 20 national team in the 14th World Junior Championships, earning Donnaconnan fan recognition as the top player in the tournament. Bremerton had high praise for the youngster, saying "he's got great hockey IQ and he's fit in very well with the other players on the team."

Dylan Bannister assumes Granato's place as the second line left wing, but Bannister readily admits he can't "replace" Granato.

"There's no way," Bannister said. "He brought a lot of intangibles that come from experience. I couldn't do that, at least not internationally."

One longtime Stars stalwart who is remaining is third line left wing Jeff Tucker, whom Bremerton was able to talk into staying despite his originally intended plans to retire. He said he was offered the captain's "C" but declined it.

"I prefer to work more behind the scenes," he said. "I don't see myself as a verbal, in-your-face leader."

That would be left wing and new Stars enforcer Brock Willingham. He takes over the role of the designated fight guy from Donald, although he features a deft touch with the puck and an ability to read opposing players.

"I feel confident I can win a fight, but that's not my only reason for being here," he said.

The relative youth movement makes this Sarzonia squad noticeably younger than the previous edition, though there are still plenty of players who have experience.

"We just canceled our orders of Geritol except for Ray Olendorff," said fourth line centre Cliff Sauerchuck of the oldest player on the Sarzonia squad.

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], In fact, the men's national team - nicknamed the Ice-a-phants as of 2021 - were one of the best teams in the multiverse, having made the World Cup of Hockey finals four times in four consecutive competitions; winning two (29th edition against Gregoryisgodistan and 31st edition against Valanora) and losing two (30th and 32nd, both times against disliked rivals Valanora), as well as two bronze medal games; although the B-team won a gold medal in the men's ice hockey at the 12th Winter Olympics, they're considered a different team and as a result their achievement is not counted alongside the three WCoH wins. They were also been one of the best teams in the tournament, very nearly making it out of the group stage in their inaugural tournament, making it to the quarter-finals in their second, winning the bronze in their third and staying in the top ten in rankings since the 29th edition (and top 3 since the 30th WCoH), even nabbing a third trophy in the 35th edition. However a disappointing and controversial run in the 38th tournament saw them withdraw from the competition in anger for a few editions (with former WCoH vice president Ed Peak even stepping down from his role and retiring from the public eye until his death in 2020) and, ever since their return for the 41st edition, they've been facing an uphill battle trying to return to their former glory.

Roster for World Cup of Hockey XLIII

If we've learned anything, it's that you can't kill hockey's popularity in Eshialand. Believe you me, the king tried to replace it with soccer, but the soccer team's shockingly early exit in IAC XIII happening at the same time as the Junior Owls winning the title at WJHC XVII only served to cement hockey's position at the top of the Eshian sporting hierarchy, back where it belonged the whole time.

When the Eshian Hockey League opened up to both genders for the 2019-20 season, Jessica was one of the first young female stars on the scene, winning the William Davis Trophy for highest-scoring defender in each of her first two seasons, and currently the front-runner to win a third time. Expect her to play extremely offensively in this tournament, scoring more goals than many forwards.

The captain of Eshialand's WJHC-winning U-20 team, Jonas will be leading the 6-player U-20 contingent on this team. Whether his WJHC performance will translate well to the WCoH remains to be seen, but Coach Maran has high hopes for the hard-shooting left winger.

The older brother of WJHC defenseman Vincent, Daniel is quite the player in his own right, known for being one of the better stickhandlers in the country. Despite the fact that he's in the fourth line, expect him to make good use of his playing time.

Let's Cool it Down...

That night in Iqaluit was a dream come true... but we all have to wake up at some point.

For Alexander Maran, that point was a little under a month later, when he was looking over the Eshian Youth Hockey Association's finances. They were in the red again. All of these outreach programs were costing money which the government simply wouldn't give to them. Trophies were nice and all, but they didn't pay the bills. A few rich investors were helping keep their operation afloat, but he'd need something ridiculous to keep the lights on long-term.

Luckily, an opportunity would arise just in the nick of time.

RING! RING!

"Hello?"
"Mr. Maran? It's me, the king!"

King William didn't seem anything at all like the king who was hesitant to fund the WJHC. He seemed genuinely happy to talk to him in a way that he just wasn't before.

"Oh, hello then. Why are you calling?"
"Believe it or not, people seem to want Eshialand to go to the World Cup of Hockey, and I, unlike what some people might think, want whatever the nation wants!"
"So? Don't talk to me, talk to the Eshialand Hockey Federation!"
"I did, and they told me that they wanted you to coach the team! They said that anybody who could do what you did in Quebec and Shingoryeo is the perfect choice!"
"Wait, really?"
"Absolutely! So what do you say, do you want to go to Kelssek?"

He thought for a second before replying. "Is it okay if I ask a question before accepting?"
"Sure you can!"
"Well, the EYHA isn't doing the best financially, and--"
"Yes!"
"Wait, just like--"
"I'd be happy to fund the EYHA after your tournament!"
"Oh, well... thanks! I guess everything's settled then."
"Have fun at the World Cup of Hockey!"

And just like that, the EYHA was saved. Now all he had to do was coach the Eshian National Team at the World Cup of Hockey. That couldn't be too hard, right?

About a week later...

In LaSette Park in Eshialand City, two seventy-something men are playing chess and discussing the news of the day when the topic of the World Cup of Hockey comes up.

"Did you hear about that group draw Jerry?" the Black player asked.
"I sure did, Marty!" Jerry, the White player, responded. "It seems rather large, doesn't it?"
"Eleven games is almost an entire World Juniors and a half! I hope they can hold out without getting tired... check!"
"Pah, you're always going for those quick checks, they never work in the long run... what about those teams though? Any opinions on them?"
"I don't like Abanhfleft and Delaclava right at the start..."
"The junior team put 5 goals past each of them though!"
"Junior schmunior, this is the big time! And then there's that... Shoes are Falling and West Rental Cone-land?"

Equestria is a dead straight loss, even though as what it may seem. Teams in tricky rank numbers and positions are never always good, so coming from experience, i expect a loss. Quebec and Shingoryeo, we went there for the 17th World Junior Hockey Championships yet we never faced them. But just from rank i can tell they are very good. Another draw seems plausible, but the loss expectancy is higher. Poafmersia and Gergary seems either like a win and a draw, a win and a loss, or just straight up two losses.

That's all i have to say.

And here we are at another World Cup of Hockey...where now, finally, TJUN-ia will be fully in on their Ice Jagaurs. You all remember what happened last time out in Graintfjall when Ølson Rasmussen saved his job in the most spectacular way possible, coming back from losing one particular game 14-2 to win 4 of the final 5, including a final showdown with then #4 Savojarna, in order to secure playoff hockey for the very first time. While Valanora did spare no mercy in our first playoff game, Rasmussen had done enough to save himself from the wrath of the IHT - for now, anyway - and so, he's still the man in change entering the 43rd WCoH in Kelssek. Everyone is still here but this 12-team group stage will really test them as some of the best hockey nations in the world will face off with our Jags - including Cassadaigua, the team who beat us by 12 goals in the "Hagejoki Massacre" last time out. With revenge potentially on the cards and the Top 4 once again making the knockouts, the pressure is on Rasmussen and his Ice Jags to repeat the magic of 2 years ago...

NEU ENGOLLON NATIONAL HOCKEY TEAM:

The Ibex and hockey in Neu Engollon

There is one professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, the NEHL, with an associated minor league known as B League. There is also a strong collegiate tradition in the sport, the NECHL is run by NECA (Neu Engollian Collegiate Association) and the NEHL pull their players from graduates of these top schools along with some B League players. The Ibex are all pulled from the NEHL, or Neu Engollian nationals playing in equivalent foreign leagues. Andre Manon and Ernst Volkzein, both retired players from the National Ibex and the NEHL, and are in the management helm of the Ibex. The Ibex have brought home the Cup two years in a row, bookended by getting 3rd place the year previous and following that 2-year streak, after so many previous heartbreaking runs for the WC over the years. Like many Neu Engollian teams, they have been absent from international sport for a spell now, but are ready to try again.

Ice Hockey - Second Division Plans

Mere years after setting up a professional, national league, the national ice hockey assocation is already thinking of setting up a developmental league to catch the talent coming in from the north coast that now feeds into gridiron and soccer instead. That's a lot of change for a sport that was frozen (get it) in time for decades - about a half century, actually. Just a few years ago, teams merged, moved, and folded, which means that decades-old rivalries disappeared overnight, and a lot of fans were (rightfully?) angry. At the same time, the sport found hundreds of thousands of new fans in the areas that the old teams moved to. There was no right way to go about it: either you keep ice hockey stuck in an amateur era with a handful of healthy clubs, or you professionalise it, losing some of the features that makes it so beloved, but finding a lot of new fans and players.

Anyway, the new league was an immediate success. And that leaves the business side of sports with one question: how do we squeeze more Koronas out of this market?

Apart from the 'is there enough money in ice hockey right now to make this work' question (which, admittedly, is the most important one for the bean counters), there are two things to consider. 1) Where are these teams going to be and 2) who is going to pay for them?

The current ice hockey market is dominated by the northeastern islands, which still hold seven out of twelve teams. That's a small population, small area, supporting over 50% of the league, and the only way that's in any way sustainable is that if even one more team would have been driven away from those islands, they'd shut down this entire operation before it got under way. You do NOT touch some of these teams. That leaves five teams for the entire rest of Ko-oren, and even then they're concentrated in the sparsely populated parts: Launott, Lysager, Dartha, Straudum, and then the one surprising team, on the west coast, the Blizzards. That team brings in more money than any other, but to be fair, they spend all excess income on transport costs to get to the other 11 teams. Also, Lysager? A town with barely twenty thousand souls?

Well, yes. Ice hockey remains the most conservative, local sport out there and nothing was ever going to change that. A second division can be set up out of nothing: there's no history, so you can put these teams anywhere without pissing anyone off. Then again, knowing the culture behind this sport? Someone's going to be angry anyway. That said: every fan will agree that more people tuning into the sport is a good thing, and so the search for 12 host towns is on. Now it's just a matter of finding places where ice hockey talent could grow up.

Northeastern Islands
It'd be odd to put a developmental team in the one place where the sport is already insanely strong, but at the same time, they can show everyone the rest of the country how it's done. Aerellen, Altiora, and Azuren are three mid-sized towns that don't already have a team at the highest level - but they're still small towns with massive fanbases for the existing teams.

Northeastern peninsula
This area is huge - and not always given enough credit for its size. It's cold, it's mountainous, but there aren't too many people and the top league redistribution put some extra teams here - they're saturated. Even then, places like Lamau and Almina don't have teams nearby. Those are options.

Intermare
Now we're talking. The province of Intermare has the largest population out of all subdivisions since the reorganisation (3,043,524. Only Surbourneshire (3,008,566) comes close), at 10.5% of the total population. Intermare currently has 32 registered pro teams, out of a national total of 548, which comes down to under 6%, and Intermare certainly isn't poorer (or richer) than other places. Intermare is just that underrepresented in Ko-orenite domestic sports. If we look beyond the usual suspects (the metropolises of Schemerdrecht and Sterrenwolde) and look for towns in the colder, mountainous climates, there are amazing prospects for Turnaarde, Vleugelberg, Mushout, Genehof, and Angelwoud.

West Coast
They currently have one team, the aforementioned Blizzards, and there's room for more... maybe. The truth is that the West Coast is quite far away from the rest and its team would need compensation for their travel costs, partially to be paid by the entire league. They could maybe get a team in Myaranowra, which is a town just beyond the Blizzards' HQ.

Elsewhere
And hey, why can't we look for decent spots in other places?
- Alara: a large-ish city close to Dartha (which already has a huge following). The downside: it's on a separate island, and plays baseball as it considers itself a summer destiation. It's not, really.
- The Capitals (Mayara, Gehrenna, Senoren, Maethoru): they have the money and the population. They are easy to travel to. They are near mountains. They tick all the boxes... but also represent 'the government' which is something not all ice hockey fans from the northeast necessarily want in their league.
- Towns near the Capitals: they tick all the above boxes without the 'government' problem, but sacrifice the 'easy to travel to' rule to an extent. Tathsoren and Monradhau... are options, I guess.

And then for the second question: who will pay for it? Will each current top division team adopt one team as its developmental team and pay for its expenses? Or will the entire top division contribute to a single, central pot of gold that the developmental league runs on? The latter would reduce risk... so we'll probably end up with the former.

Off the puck, the team employs a high pressure defense designed to deny time to the puck carrier. Expect to see two, or even three forwards in on the forecheck, and checks finished hard to wear down the defense. Since this often leaves one forward behind the play, also expect to see the defense and even the goalkeeper attempting a lot of quick stretch passes off turnovers to start odd man rushes. In the offensive zone, they like to screen the keeper, and take shots from the point looking for deflections and rebounds down low. The team isn't exactly loaded with top end offensive talent, but hopes to make up for it with strong puck retrieval down low and along the boards.

Dave, you didn't really think this through. There aren't any ice rinks in Placely Placington, you've sent a whole bunch of Test Subjects to play
a sport where everyone hitting into each other is a regular occurence (although on the upside it would make a hypothetical match against Gregoryisgodistan a really fun thought experiment) and, due to there being three coaches, your head coach now has to keep changing his look every time the cameras are on him. So why send a team to the World Cup of Hockey? On the upside, your boys might not do too badly here so hope for the best.

Tactics
The Nepharim don't have many technical players in their ranks, but they are an intimidating physical prospect to face, bonded by an indomitable team spirit that transcends club and state rivalries the moment they pull on the green jersey. Style:
The Krauts play well disciplined defense and rely on a pair of veterans in Joel Weidman and Augustin Kahn (whom has many all stars under his belt) to be a reliable presence on the offense, while Frederick Vrabel speeds around and goes for the shot on goal more aggressively. That said, if old timer Richart Matthens is in the game, he'll only be there for a short spell due to his age. He's still effective in short bursts and is a future hall of famer, but odds are he's just in there to knock some youngster who thinks he's tough down a few pegs.

Vrabel and Kahn are also, coincidentally, enthusiastic fighters. Expect these boys to get into quite a few tussles.

After underperforming in quite a few seasons, the Krauts have decided to aggressively pursue both new coaching hires and some young blood on the ice. Head coach Alram Isenbrand saw a ton of success as an assistant coach and will be working exclusively for the Krauts, unlike our last coach, who saw this as more of a side gig. Trace Woodard, his assistant, has worked with Isenbrand for a long time and should be able to take a good deal of delegated work.

Long time starter took a back seat a season ago, and is now played sparingly in terms of minutes, but a bit more liberally if a throwdown needs to happen. His age was certainly a hinderance, and his running mate Augustin Khan is slowing down as well. The second time participant, Frederick Vrabel, is now the focal point of the offense. At 25 years old, he's a four time all star, two time all-pro now. Probably the best player on the ice for Ranoria.

However! Alram's emphasis has always been a defensive one, and he did manage to reel in a few high-performing, fast young players last go round. Ezekiel Huber is key here, a three time all star at just 26 years old. He's a big upgrade over the former starter - a remarkably average Arnold Stahl. At goalie, Dareus Burnett is one of the better men at that position in Ranorian hockey, significantly better than his backup Andreas Annalena. Last time out, despite a good bit of excitement over Alram Isenbrand's taking over the team and the signing of Frederick Vrabel, our Krauts on Ice didn't do to well - we're hoping that gets turned around in this edition.

The last team in a group of 12 faces the most unique schedule of them all.

Hello, it's me, Josh Seametzle, and welcome back to Stats Corner.

The World Cup of Hockey is going to be an interesting tournament in the grand scheme of things. To know why, one need look only at the mathematics.

When a tournament has an odd number of participants, here's the typical formula used to determine who plays whom on each matchday. Don't worry if you don't understand the mathematics behind it, I'll explain it as easily as I can.

1-x+d ≡ y (mod n)

So what does this mean? Well, n is the number of teams involved in the group d is the matchday number, x is your team number in the group listing, and y is the team you'll play on matchday d. That ≡ symbol means that 1-x+d and y leave the same remainder when divided by n. If x and y turn out to be the same number, some special things happen.

In groups with an odd number of teams, team x will get a bye when x=y. Simple enough. With n=5, this is how it worked for Eshialand's Baptism of Fire. With an even number of teams though, something else entirely happens. If n is an even number, you replace n in the formula with n-1, and ignore team n for now. If x=y for some x and some d, team x will play team n instead of getting a bye. It's an n-1 team group with an n^th team thrown in at the last second.

Let me give you an example, in case the mathematics went over your head. I'll use Eshialand's group in the first half of World Cup 88 Qualifying to demonstrate what this formula and the rules surrounding it mean, using the schedules for #6 Eshialand, #4 Squornshelan Remnant States, and #10 Lisander. n=10 here, so Lisander's the special case to which the normal rules don't apply.

#6 Eshialand

Eshialand and the Squornshelan Remnant States are examples of normal schedules. They almost invariably play team 8 after team 7, team 3 after team 2, et cetera. In that sense, you can imagine that Devonta had the advantage of playing mostly teams who had been tired out by Vilita, and Hebitaka had the advantage of playing teams tired out by Savojarna. As for Lisander though, they follow none of these typical rules, instead interweaving matches against the first half of the group listing and the second half.

Seeing why isn't too hard if you try untangling the mathematics. Lisander would play team x in the following scenario:

1-x+d ≡ x (mod 9)

2x-1 ≡ d (mod 9)

The left-hand side is always going to be an odd number, but since we only want numbers for d that range from 1 to 9, teams 6 through 9 will have 9 subtracted from their value for 2x-1, yielding the missing even numbers in between the odd numbers that teams 1 through 5 give. This is why the schedule interlaces teams from the first half of the list and the second half.

How does this apply here though? Well, this is a 12-team group, and Eshialand is the 12^th team. We are the exception, who do not play Delaclava right after we play Cassadaigua, but rather 9 games before.

Another weird exception involves how many arenas the Owls end up playing in. Below is each team in group B listed by how many different arenas they'll play in.

Most teams play in 7 different arenas, but some will play in as few as 5 or as many as 8... except for Eshialand.

Because of the slapdash way that the 12^th team is added to the schedule, they're always the first listed matchup each night, and because of the way that the organizers have decided which arena teams play in, this leads to Eshialand only playing in three different arenas: the first four matches are in les Jardins de Carée-Boudoin in Laneux, the next three are in Newham Wharf in Burnaby, and the last four will be in la Aréna Olympique in Langlois. That's it. That could serve to their advantage, having a familiarity with the arenas and the fans there, perhaps even being a miniature home ice advantage, but only time will tell if it truly works that way. Once again, team 12 is the exception to every rule in the book.

Mercedinian Hockey Federation presents...

Mercedini have returned to Hockey's premier tournament to contest for a first title, and looking for redemption following their early exit last season. Last time round, Mercedini begun their return to form as they recorded another knockout round berth, only to be knocked out by Quebec & Shingoryeo in the Round of 16. Selignsky's team had the momentum following a terrific group run, but it was cut short as the pressure got to the Kingfishers under the lights in Graentfjall. However, with more experience there is hope that the Kingfishers can put together another solid run (like Mercedinian teams of the past) to put themselves in the mix for the trophy. Many expected Dini to peak following their runner-up medal, but their consistency had kept them as a force in world hockey which sees them at the tournament's sixth seed this time around. Now going into the tournament as a more respected side, the Kingfishers have a platform from which to propel themselves to even greater heights.

Mercedinian-style hockey is much more irregular than its regulation counterparts from other nations, with players often staying on the ice for large periods of time, rarely changing only for injuries and drastic tactical changes. Changes are typically made during the inter-period intervals, game pauses/delays, or during special events such as power plays or short-handed periods, where management and coaches then assess tactics and change the line-ups from there. Changes are often made man for man at a specific position on the ice rather than a whole line change all at once, meaning there can be hundreds of different combination of players available to the coaching staff throughout the tournament, all depending on the opponents they are playing. This means Mercedinian hockey players are extremely fit and have tremendous stamina to last vast swathes of the period. However, as a trade-off, tactical adaptability does become a challenge, with players excelling in some areas while lacking in others, with those qualities dependant on their preferred play styles in the game. With tournaments getting longer and longer through the editions, fatigue has been a major factor in stifling Mercedinian runs for the crown.

Icers' Malinsky gets the nod as first choice goaltender for the tournament as he earns his position as the nation's number one with his club, the Zol City Icers, retaining the most recent MSL season. The Icers have been a force in domestic and international hockey, so it is hoped he will translate that into the national team. However, it's likely that the second and third choice for Mercedini will almost certainly get a run out during games versus middling teams or in potential dead rubbers, if they work their way to a position where they can afford to take their foot off the gas for a couple of matches. Marin Aalan will be in accompaniment once again he will be joined by Blue Strike's latest edition to their roster, Matsuk Zershevic (thanks to his top performances which saw his team secure HCL hockey for the first time). The three goaltenders each having different positives and negatives which can be used to the teams advantage depending on the opponent. Defensive technique will need to be assessed after the team conceded leaky goals last edition which cost them a spot in the knockout rounds, but talent is certainly in abundance from he three goaltenders listed, they simply need to perform.

No changes in the defensive roster which was completely overhauled a couple of editions ago, with the new management confirming every player will retain their spot in the national team, which was controversial to some. For all three lines called up for the World Cup of Hockey, this will be their third tournament following their maiden appearance in Quebec. It is completely domestically based, giving the defensive line more of the essence of Mercedinian hockey, something with previous rosters (featuring players from Novaya Zemlya and Neu Engollon) lacked. As a trade-off, the lack of international exposure and experience may come back to bite the team, since the rigid nature of MSL tactics has failed to yield dividends for domestic clubs in the HCL currently. Whether this group of MSL players can gel enough to form a cohesive unit in short space of time remains to be seen. Although their individual performances in the previous season of the MSL has clearly impressed national team coaches enough to warrant a run-out in the famed blue and black. While thier Round of 16 exit might mean some fans are sceptical at a championship run this time around, a good run and some fortunate bracket openings is what the team needs to get towards the business end of the tournament. They certainly impressed a lot last edition, but development and second chances are part of the Mercedinian course, this defensive roster must grab that chance and improve this time around.

When it comes to attacking prowess, Mercedini are one of the world leaders in the sport of football, but hockey is largely an untouched market when it comes to internationally recognised players in many reaches of the multiverse. Still, Mercedini have got a series of marquee names on their rosters with a series of league titles sprinkled around the names present for the national team. The days of foreign leagues being represented are now gone thanks to the rise of the MSL and Mercedini's strong footing within the hockey community. There's plenty of support in the second and third lines of the attacking roster with Mercedinian league clubs up and down the country represented well by the number of players in this roster. Last time around, the attacking roster was one of the big bright spots of a good campaign for the Mercedinians, but they simply couldn't net enough goals to make up for their leaky performances at the back, which results in them capitulating under the slightest of pressure. There's plenty to be excitement if you are a fan of the Mercedinian National Team, especially with a second division player keeping their place in the roster, a first for the nation. We all wait with baited breath for the first match of the tournament to see whether all this practice and investment has finally paid off.

Burnett is back,

Team Cassadaigua will once again have Courtney Burnett in the lineup. For those who only follow our international team, you probably think that she has been around forever. Well, you are partly right, since she did turn professional when she was only 18 and will very soon be entering her 20th year of playing in the Cassadagan Hockey League. At 37, you would think that Burnett would be slowing down, but it may just be that she is getting better with time. Courtney has never relied on her speed though her skating has always been more than adequate. Her vision for the game is impeccable, and it has allowed the defensemen to have a long career. She will score goals and can quarterback a powerplay, and that experience only serves her stronger now.

"You have to pinch me sometimes to remind me about how long I have been at," Burnett said in her first interview since arriving in Kelssek, "there are alot of sacrifices that get made to play this long, but I have never really though about hanging up the skates yet. The only thought that I had on that topic is that I will have no problem retiring once I feel that I can no longer help a hockey team. Right now, I don't think I am anywhere near that. So, I keep going out there, keep lacing up these skates and competing against the best players within Cassadaigua, and then throughout the world when we play in a tournament like this. I have been fortunate to win this competition, I guess that shows that I am getting older, but that really is just a number to me." Burnett credits her commitment to her workout routine throughout her career for keeping her able to play at a high level. This is a roster that sees a lot of returnees, as many of the core players are still in their upper 20's or lower 30's. Perhaps, time might be running out for them, but that time is not here right now. As for Burnett? "Right now, I think I can play until I am 50." Well, we will let her get to 40 first.
