Naming Conventions for People in Your Nation

Postby Berhakonia » Wed Jul 28, 2021 5:03 am

What customs, conventions and traditions govern the naming of children in YN?

For example, Berhakonian children are often chrismated with the name of their patron saint, and may choose to take the patronymic of any male ancestor in the family. Berhakonian surnames are often clan-based for the upper class, but become a lot less rigid the further down you travel.

Worms are usually named after their role, which in the majority is also the name for their caste.
Deliveryworms, Warworms, Motherworms, etc.
The high command gets special names, while the normal worms usually just get an ID added to their name with their motherworms ID and their own after it.

As a multicultural nation, Australic naming conventions vary greatly between families and communities based on their ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Generally, hyphenated surnames are very common, especially in families of mixed culture. Outside of this, there is no gender bias regarding which partner in a civil union takes the other's surname - some don't and retain their own. Surnames of Gaelic descent are also commonly rendered in their modern native form, rather than in an anglicised form (i.e. 'O'Caelleigh', rather than 'Kelly', exemplified by the Prime Minister Gene O'Caelleigh). Surnames from other cultures are also generally kept in their native language. For cultures that have gendered surnames, the practice is typically maintained (i.e. Poppy H. Novotná, the C.R. for the Heidelburg Commune).

First-names are quite often hereditary (i.e. children are named after an ancestor, such as a grandparent or great-grand uncle/aunt). The terms 'Jr.' and 'Sr.' are commonly used, but further numbering (i.e. 'John Citizen III') is rare. This practice, along with general naming trends, has kept many names that would today be considered 'old-fashioned' within the common naming lexicon, such as Carlisle, Tristram, Aloysius, Silas, Jeanette, Eleanor, Bridgette, and many other names of Gaelic/Britannic origin.

Middle names tend to be very unique, and many Australics will have more than one - some add or change these in adult life; the changing of first names is uncommon, though many decide to go by their middle name rather than their first name and some of these people do have the order officially switched. Middle names often alliterate with one's first name, and quite often possess the name number of syllables; generally rhyming is avoided.

Name order varies greatly within groups that would natively place the surname first. For example, there is a roughly equal number of Australics from these cultures who retain the practice (i.e. National Football Team Centre-back Chau Si Yuan) and who have adopted the western style (i.e. Senator and former Prime Minister Glen Seung).

Prefixes and suffixes are widely used by Australics. The most common is Cz., which is short for 'Citizen', and is applied to all Australics by default in formal conversation/writing. Professionals will also generally suffix their names with the syndicate to which they belong (i.e. the F.C.S. C.A., the Federal Consolidated Syndicate for Consulic Affairs). Those with doctorates typically use the prefix 'Dr.' over any other, or add it to other prefixes (i.e. 'Ambassador Dr.' or 'Cz. Dr.').

Most signatures are monogramatic in form, and abbreviation is applied liberally to ensure one can reasonably fit what can become unwieldy names (i.e. the full name and titling of General Secretary Doctor Silas Sebastian Koruköyne O'Dubhghaill-Aydınlar, Federal Consolidated Syndicate for Health would be drastically shortened to G.S. Dr. Silas S.K. O'Dubhghaill-Aydınlar, F.C.S.H.).
January 27° - The 2025 Federal Election season has begun! Initial three-party preferred polls put the I.S.P. ahead at 37%, followed by the Country Party at 34%, then Labor at 29%.

Traditional Pirusavian names, at least for the Mustelidic ethnic groups, consists of first name, clan name, and nickname.

For example, a tribal Mervalian man by the name of "Sagardauz Tarvenn e Marveni". 'Sagardauz' is the first name, 'Tarvenn' is the clan name, and 'e Marveni' is the nickname, which translates to "the Giant."

However, since the 18th century, the practice of giving nicknames became less common. Currently, Pirusavians usually have two words for their name which consists of first (given) name and last (clan) name. One of the best example is "Edvard Pergenn", of which "Pergenn" is the clan name.

Sometimes, when someone doesn't belong to any clans (e.g. naturalized immigrant), they could use their paternal name as the last name in the past, or any kind of surnames in the modern times when it's not really that strict.

This naming convention apply to other Pirusavian Mustelidic ethnic groups, which consists of Mervalians, Samgurtians, Galennians, Puronians, Pecanians, and Mevanians.

Central Amenrian names generally have 2-3 syllables, with the surname at the front and the given name following it. For example, Feng Tianlei is the full name, with Feng being the surname and Tianlei being her given name.

People with mixed central Amenrian ancestry use two names; one international name and one name in their central Amenrian parent's language. For example, a Korean-Indonesian named Kim Junho has Surya Kim as his international name. International names aren't unique to mixed blooded Amenrians and can sometimes be used by pure blooded central Amenrians.

It usually depends on the language the parents and child speak, but most languages work with first name, middle names, and family name, though in Hungarian, you put the family name first, before personal names, a first name is the first name out of the personal names.

Though, usually what happens is a given name, and a middle name plus family name. Middle names are often reflective of abstract traits can some up a person, though, typically for some professions, name changes are common, it estimated that half of all Auzkhians have changed their names after entering adulthood or even adolescence. Sometimes, it might be because the parents were wrong or the child has found a better name, especially among Pony Auzkhians whose full names often reflect cutie marks or some other skill or line of work. Now, some witches are hired to divine names for foals, but predicting the future is a rare gift that only a few oracles have and only the gods know for sure.

Griffon names tend to use the same letters for given and family names, middle names are not common. Typically, Griffons just call each other by name, as there are only so few griffon clans, though some griffons have adopted different surnames especially if they move outside of griffon villages and cities .

Humans tend to be similar to pony names actually, but are more simple, often just with less names, maybe 2 or 3, middle names are not rare but not common.

Dragons don't have family names, but they just say their personal and son/daughter/child of parents' names, usually the one that laid the egg they hatched from, they sometimes say both father and mother names'

Changelings are similar except their last names are the Queen names, sometimes king, in some cases, their societies have different ideas of what a family is.

Aikolandais children are most commonly bestowed with two given names, although having only one or more than two is not unheard of. Given names after the first one are often taken from a child's grandparents or other family members, although they may also be taken from the names of Catholic saints, although this is more common among older Aikolandais. It is possible for the Aikolandais Government to reject any given names that a parent has chosen for their child, but this is only done in instances where the parent(s) are attempting to name their child something vulgar, obscene, or offensive.

It is the parents choice on whether or not a child will take the surname of their father, mother, or a hyphenation of the surnames of both of their parents. Unlike our neighbours to the north in France, there is no limitation on the number of surnames that may be hyphenated, so it is possible for an Aikolandais to have an extremely long surname.

There is no requirement to take a married name and, even if one decides to adopt their spouse's surname, their legally recognised family name remains unchanged unless they apply for a legal name change at a local government office and pay a 20₣ processing fee.

Regardless of the number of given names one has, Aikolandais will only make use of one of them during their everyday lives, with their other names only being used for legal purposes. The same applies to those with long surnames, who will use only one or two parts of their surname in their daily lives.

There's a discrepancy between the title of the inquiry (general naming conventions) and the first question (specifically about children. We'll endeavour to answer both, in that order.

General Naming conventions

Prut naming conventions legally require a citizen to have a personal name, a matronymic, and a family name (usually a matriname, but somewhat frequently also a toponymic, eponymic, or occupational name); There is some regional and dialectal differences, but the standard would be [personal name][matronymic][family name]. Some regions have two personal names (e.g. Hesperia), some use hyphenated double family names (e.g. often in Raion no kuni, frequently in Hesperia, to a lesser extent in Veleslavia).

Examples:

Female — Astrid Lottesdochter Kopleud => "Astrid" is a typical female personal name, "Lottesdochter" is the matronymic, meaning Astrid's mother's name is "Lotte", and "Kopleud" is a family name, specifically an occupational name signifying that the family has a mercantile background or origin, likely from eastern Neo Prutenia.

Male — Alfred Keldesson Osbochter => "Alfred" is a typical male personal name, "Keldesson" is the matronymic, meaning Aflred's mother's name is "Kelde", and "Osbochter" is a family name, specifically a toponymic identifying the family's origin to be somewhere in northwestern Neo Prutenia (where the Ansbucht, dialectally Osbocht, is located).

Both examples are Standard Low Prut variants and conventions; dialectal names use different spelling or have unique quirks, e.g. in the Hartwold region the oldest living direct female ancestor is always used for the matronymic, and the realms with a different main language frequently use local language variants, e.g. Veleslavia sometimes uses "[female Genitiv form]-sin" instead of "[female Genitiv form]-son" and "[female Genitiv form]-kćer" instead of "[female Genitiv form]-dochter", e.g. "Svetlana Mirekćer Lončar" instead of "Svetlana Mirasdochter Lončar".

Citizens of foreign descent are required to adopt Prut naming conventions upon becoming citizens, e.g. someone named originally "John Smith" would keep the personal name "John", would have to add his mothers name, for example "Janesson" if her name happened to be "Jane". However, a citizen of foreign descent is in most cases required to change their family name as almost all of them are patronymic (derived from a male ancestor, including the mother's "maiden name", since that would be the grandfather's patronymic name). If such is the case, the new family name is typically a toponymic, or less frequently an eponymic.

Regardless of local customs and habits, language used, ancestry of the person, or other distinctions, the name format is always [personal name][matronymic][family name].

What customs, conventions and traditions govern the naming of children in YN?

Children share the exact same naming conventions as everyone else, especially the format. Customs do vary, sometimes considerably, from region to region; e.g. in central and southern Neo Prutenia and western and central Veleslavia a child is not called by their personal name until their sixth birthday, and are referred to by their matronymic instead (holdover from pre-industrial times, when children were less likely tu survive until their fifth year of life; however, the family is now legally 'forced' to give the child a name even if it's not customarily used—laws supersede superstitions after all). Customs also vary on who gets to name the child, e.g. the oldest living female relative is common, but many regions do it "by lot", that is every family member and in some cases the father writing a name on a piece of paper and throwing it in a pot, and then a name would be drawn at random.

Interesting, most modern cultures tend to favour patronyms over matronyms, so what made you choose the inverse?

Middle names in Anglo-Saxe Coburg are, traditionally, practically non-existent, although this more frequently tends not to be the case with children of younger couples or those from overseas. Last names in areas of predominantly Nordic and Anglo-Saxon influence, making up most of the country, use a patronymic or matronymic reference, so for example a male born to someone called Harald would have the last name of "Haraldson" or a daughter born to someone called Ædgyth may have the name "Ædgythsdohtor". In German majority areas, people tend to have surnames in the more traditional western sense and many people who have immigrated to Anglo-Saxe Coburg tend to have their children retain their family name.
The order of names is usually; First name -> Middle name -> Surname i.e. Isobel Ædgythsdohtor
Although, typically in documentation and the like, names are written as; Surname (capitalised), First name i.e. ÆDGYTHSDOHTOR, Isobel

NAMING CONVENTIONS OF THE SELIANS

The naming conventions of the Selians, though varying to greater or lesser degrees between the constituent tribes and their city-states that make up the Selian race, can be categorised broadly enough to describe general practises. These practises visibly reflect certain social structures in Selia, particularly the emphasis upon family, the nebulous concept of the Selian clan, and the status of women.

The origin of given names in Selia is taken from within the family, as names are frequently recycled. Sons and daughters are both frequently given names from the father's side of the family, and it is common for the firstborn son to receive his grandfather's name, and further sons to be named for their father's brothers and uncles. Daughters likewise are given the names of their father's mother, sisters, and aunts, though with optional consideration to birth-order. It is common in many tribes to still name the firstborn daughter for her paternal grandmother, and just as common in others to pay no mind to this. In some communities, boys are given two names, often to honour twice as many ancestors at once. It also allows for the firstborn son in particular to have as one of his names one that his father wears, to show greater paternal allegiance. This practice is however fairly uncommon, occurring in all Selian tribes but not ubiquitously within any of them.

Maternally sourced names are uncommon also, but not unheard of. Men have been known to name a son after their wife's father, and a daughter after their wife's mother, as a means to introduce new names into the family heritage every generation, but this practice is mostly unheard of amongst Ardaean, Aonean, and Edenian Selians. As the principle of generation is seen to come from the male, not the female, patrilineal, patrilocal, and patriarchal practises are justified by the idea of a supreme male authority, and the names of the members of a family come from the male side in most cases.

Surnames are absent in Selia, and patronymics are instead used. The form these take can vary based on regional dialect, and include suffixes like '-idas', '-ides', '-adas', and others, which all translate to "son of", and are affixed to the end of the father's name, which is then used by the man to complete his identity. A more literally spoken "[SON], son of [FATHER]" may also be used in more formal instances and introductions, with the patronymic being employed thereafter to show familiarity with the individual's descent.

Clan names are also present in Selia, though these can become confusing in the lower classes. Whilst the various aristocracies and patriciate classes of the city-states retain an enduring clan identity, the clan being named for and centred on a founding ancestor, the lower classes can often possess overlapping and hierarchical sense of clan identities. These include more and more families the further back the cited ancestor is on the family tree, and so two clans which define themselves separately can be united into a single body by tracing back merely one ancestor back, if the founders of the two clans were brothers. The name of the clan is often styled as the "House of [ANCESTOR]", although a plural patronymic such as the "[ANCESTOR]-idai" can be used to refer to all descendants of the named ancestor, not just sons.

Women of Selia also possess patronymics, typically in the form of '-one', '-ione', and '-ine'. Where women differ from their male kin however, is that whilst they do bear personal names inherited from the family, these are never spoken to those outside of the family, especially unrelated men. Like everything else about women, their names are guarded fiercely, and for any man to know and speak the name of a woman from another family suggests an intolerable level of familiarity. Indeed, where possible, men of a family avoid talking about their wives, sisters, and daughters whenever possible, to avoid knowledge of them tempting male intrusion into the home. Whenever a woman must be introduced to others, it is always through the patronymic, identifying her only as the daughter of a man. This applies if the woman is also married, where she will also be stated as being the wife of her husband. Amongst sisters, this also produces a level of anonymity. When combined with their traditional practice of seclusion within the home, and veiling when outdoors, the use of an identical patronymic as the totality of their public expression acts as a further shield for their modesty and fidelity to the family. To ask the personal name of an unrelated woman is considered tantamount to a sexual advance, shaming her deeply, and if done in the company of her relatives could provoke a violent encounter. Even the male relatives of women (many of whom are legally able to marry her) who know their names prefer to address them in the style of their relation, such as their younger or older sister, daughter, or wife.

Personal names are thus considered a very intimate thing for women, as often the very first time they will hear their name spoken aloud by an unrelated male is on their wedding day. This custom of shielding female names from knowledge outside the family has been considered one of the strangest in Selia.

To summarise; personal names are inherited primarily through the paternal line; patronymics are employed in lieu of surnames; clan identities unite related families under an awareness of shared heritage; women are known publicly, if at all, only by their patronymics, and never by their personal names.

This nation does not use NS-stats.
The Panselian League is a federation of traditionalist, austere, militaristic, and patriarchal city-states bound by common customs, language, blood, and religion.

Is this an OOC or IC question? Assuming OOC, it made the most sense to me after refining and developing my IC content over the years. It's more appropriate for the Prut as I envisioned them, and it suggest an older, continual culture and identity that's quite distinct from the 'norm'. Also, got annoyed by people assuming I'm another NS Germany-clone; kinda makes me cross that English speakers get a pass when they use the English language but don't base their nation on a major Anglo-nation, e.g. USA, UK, etc, but German speakers are not given the same courtesy. So the matronymic and general female-tending elements are a good indicator that the PM is not "the FatherlandTM" version 31682 or so.

Archbasilica appoints 'A' appellations across all aspects atop Archbasilican abbreviations, achievements, adjectives, advancements, adverbs, areas, associations, and attainments. Appropriately artistic as adheringly ascetic, all appellations arising as an 'A' across all argots and accents are acceptable. Any anti-A appellations are acrimoniously abstained, as any aforementioned appelations affiliate(s) abhorrence, abnegation, abomination, agnosticism, anarchy, anathema, animosity, apostasy, and aspersion.

It is considered bad luck (not to mention confusing) to name a child after a living relative. Instead, it is common to honor a relative by giving a child a name with the same first letter. For example, a child might be named Yael to honor her grandfather Yusuf.

Most people have four names. The first two are called christian names, and are given at the child's baptism. If the child is not baptised, they are called forenames. The third (or second) name is the confirmation name, given at the child's confirmation. The last name is the surname, which is inherited from the father. Christian names must be chosen from the Rolls of names, and must be unique in the parish amongst those living. Thus, two names are common, to help disambiguate. The confirmation name is usually the name of a saint, such as the name of the saint on which day the child was born, or baptised, or another saint of local or family tradition or choice.

(Of course it's an OOC question lol)

I get why you'd wanna distance yourself from NS Germany, but with the amount of "simpy" anime/waifu-esque NS-aesthetic nations on the site, the matronym part could've still had me fooled.

We go by the Eastern naming convention, in which the Proletariat's personal names go by: [Honorific] (If talking to strangers or formal settings) + [Last Name] + [First Name]. Middle names do not exist among the ethnic Koriyans but they do exist for other ethnicities within the Union such as the Eurabic people. Names can either be sourced from the mother or father, it's really up to the parent's deliberation. Sometimes these sorts of issues are taken to court where it is settled by a game of paper-scissors-rock (Yes, that is unironic).

People are named as Given name-middle name-Last name. Having a middle name being based on that of an older relative is pretty common in Anabese people. Ex. Gwen James Laurus, and a descendent would be named Beck James Laurus.

Professional people have the initials of an organization or association followed by an (optional) occupation title as prefix to the name Ex. A.M.F. Dr. Blake Thomas Winters, but the middle family-given name is optional.

For most of the Pulsrothi population, children have a given name, one or two middle names, and finally the family name.

Among the white and mixed race communities, it is tradition to give a child a name beginning with the same letter as the previous patriarch or matriarch of the family.

For the Mahêalani population (and occasionally mixed race as well), a child's middle name would be the name of the clanmother or clanfather of their Óohê or clan.

Oh boy. Would you like examples?

Valentijn “De Sierlijke en Vrij Valkyrie General ov Valentine Z” Samantha Maxwell Delta Weston Stijn Angelus Tracey Mitchell Tristian Marnix Basilisk Lewis Hyatt X. Constantine Sein Lin Zaw Naing. First, your Christian/English name, Valentians typically have a couple of them. Most of them became unisex as decades marched on. They also have nicknames - some long, some short, short phrases, or just callsigns. Then their actual name from their nationality - Valentijn up there is Dutch-Burmese, so the Burmese parts are at the end, Dutch parts on front and middle.

Zastępca Strażnika Adriana Krystal Desiree “Cudowny Manipulacja Światłem” Venus Kowalski Faith Stanisława Engelse I. Cherise Krystyna Zaborowska Sztormowska Pamela Alina Re. T. Lillian. Polish nationality/country of origin.

Assistant Secretary Mandy Juliet Voorzicht “Le Diplomate Indiscutable Mais Maladroit” Willow Stephanie Madison Rose Hélène Deborah Colette Diva Lydia Koh Raphaëlle Lucie V. Trs. Bertillon. French.

1st Cpt. Angela Stella Trista Josephine Natalie Rv. E. Tps. “The Eternal Explorer” Bethany Alyssa Valeska Payton. Mikayla Gosling Josie Rowan Serenity Chelsea Mikayla Hannah Tan Fang Ling. Canadian.

Anastasia “De Sierlijke en Vrij High Valkyrie ov Valentine Z” Freya Valentina Ada. Jolin Annelijn Caitlin Trijntje Crystal Clarice Constance Judy Voi. D. Nexitros Annile Teresa Thida Myat Yadana Aye. Even those who came from another world, got their names extended as they became naturalized Valentians. Used to be just Anastasia Jolin Thida Myat Yadana Aye, which... is a little long, admittedly, and she is Burmese-Dutch (More Dutch than Burmese).

And there are a lot more. Meta/OOCly, I have created 60-65 characters with these long names.

-----

And there are other non-Sixty Valentians, which is not to say they are lower on the social hierarchy - Some just prefer shorter names. Relatively shorter. This is, for example, the names of the Valentians in the 32nd International Basketball Championships.
