Sarzonia Stars
If you RP first, you may/may not do the following:
You may choose my goalscorers/goalscoring events
Everything else (Godmoding/injuries/ejections
Suspensions, violence/pandemics) is a no-go

Style: 0 (balanced between attack-minded and defensive)
Home grounds: Franz Braddock Stadium in Woodstock, capacity 35,000.
Please note: This team is renowned for its fair play. If you attack first, it will retaliate, but it will not initiate a fight.

Manager Jordan Helms, 48
Helms was a compromise choice as Stars manager after the Incorporated Lacrosse Federation couldn't come to terms with any of their prospective choices. Helms agreed to retain former manager Carter Whitlock's coaching staff and roster, saying he wanted to give the team a chance to become "[his] guys."

Defensive Coordinator: Makeeyah Brantley (43 years old)
Brantley is stepping in as defensive coordinator after the Stars fired longtime defensive boss Bill Harbour following his intemperate comments about Cassadaigua's national team. She served as a defensive coordinator at the collegiate and pro levels for eight years.
Offensive Coordinator: Tyler Pawlenty (51 years old)
Pawlenty helped mold offenses in college, in particular Rypien State College during a four-year period when that school won three collegiate national titles. His teams emphasise possession and patience, often including multiple passes before taking the perfect shot.
Assistant Coach: George Tomlin (35 years old)
Tomlin recently retired as a faceoff specialist after a collegiate career that saw him win 78 percent of his faceoffs. During his professional career in Sarzonia, he won 69 percent of his faceoffs. He can coach multiple styles of faceoffs, taking into account multiple fogos.
Assistant Coach: Bradley Morse (55 years old)
Serves as goalie coach. He helped several Sarzonian World Lacrosse Championship winning teams with goalies in an informal capacity. Now, he's coming out of retirement to provide assistance as a paid full-time coach after Whitlock convinced him to do so.

AO Games Day 3: Hockey, basketball record exciting wins

While we've been focused for the first two days on our athletes and archers - and they continued on today as well - we also got the highly anticipated first appearances from the basketball and hockey teams - both current regional and world medal holders.

Fortunately, both the hockey and basketball Phoenixes got underway successfully, with the Ice Phoenixes just skating by newcomers Romsten in a 4-3 overtime thriller, and the hardwood stars taking more comfortable victories, 72-58 over Pluvia and the Saxean Isles and 84-63 over Aji No Moto.

The track runners from Delaclava also got underway with the sprint heats, to a mixed bag of results. Here's the full roundup:

Hockey: Malone wins his international debut with OT strike

Ted Malone converted a breakaway with a deft wrist shot 3:24 into overtime and Delaclava survived a stiff challenge from Romsten to win their AO Hockey Championship opener 4-3.

"I'm really happy and relieved too," Malone said. "I don't think we were expecting such a tough test to start, but we got into it and figured out a way to win like we knew we could."

Romsten led 2-0 after the first period, with both goals coming off the stick of Theo Bimvovig. The Phoenixes appeared confused by the unique Romsten formation and had trouble eventually penetrating the middle of the ice to score goals. Captain Jehiel Abreu got Delaclava on the board in the second, but Romsten quickly responded with a goal from Nete Sundbot to claim a 3-1 lead.

However, the third period was all Phoenixes, with junior star Zoltan Bondra beating Dzschob Klentzsch with a slapshot near the blue line just two minutes into the third period. Malone tied the game halfway through the third period, stealing the puck from Filip Vosch at the red line and blitzing up the ice to deke Klentzsch and slide the puck under his legs. He then got his overtime winner in similar fashion, this time taking a quick pass from Edan Bullard after another turnover; this time, he didn't wait as long, taking the wrist shot that froze Klentzsch and ended the game.

"Once we got going in the third period, we knew the game was ours," Malone said. "Even if we didn't know exactly how or when we'd get it, we were going to get what we needed. And it's really special for me to get those first goals when we needed it the most."

The Phoenixes are not highly regarded as a senior team yet, but have won silver medals at the past two World Junior Hockey Championships, the latter concluding just a few weeks ago. Forwards Peter Požgaj and twins Tomas and Zoltan Bondra, defenseman Bohdan Kirilenko, and goaltender David Hauser were members of both squads; goaltender Bradley Konta was a member of the WJHC16 squad, who earned their runner-up at home, while Danny Ballac was the breakout star of the team who took silver in Quebec. Malone, just 21, was not selected for either of those teams, but regardless is a nascent talent who has put in quality work as a member of the Salem Ice Lasers.

The junior Phoenixes, often called the "Ashlings", in fact opened their WJHC17 run with a flat 2-0 loss to newcomers Pascafia; fortunately, the Phoenixes of today showed more resilience and grit in getting the job done, and look to take what they learned to their remaining group stage games against Valanora, Qasden, and Quebecois Acadiana.

Basketball: Zubić in fine form as Phoenixes move to 2-0

The Phoenixes got a strong start in their search of a third regional basketball medal with a pair of wins over Pluvia and the Saxean Isles (72-58) and Aji No Moto (83-64).

The breakout star of IBC31, Djordje Zubić, talled 16 points and 12 rebounds in the first contest, 23 points and 15 rebounds in the second. He admitted that the team has been struggling with the pressure of increased expectations. "We've all been thinking a lot of what we're trying to accomplish this year. We want it bad, and we just don't want to let anyone down. I think it was really good for us to actually get out and play, remind ourselves why we've achieved what we have.

Indeed, it appeared to be business as usual for the high-flying and sharpshooting Phoenixes, who looked to be in mid-season form. Ball movement was crisp and the Phoenixes had just 13 turnovers across the two games, and built at least 20-point leads after three quarters.

The world's eyes are on the basketball Phoenixes in the coming weeks after Delaclava achieved a stunning silver medal at the International Basketball Championships in their backyard. After wrapping up play in Turori and Tropicorp, the Phoenixes get underway with IBC32 qualifying, in the hopes of making a winning trip to Chromatika. A long season lies ahead - yet they have passed the opening tests with flying colors.

Track and field: Marshall and relays in hunt for the medals, while hurdlers fall flat

A day after helping her mixed 4x400-metres relay team get to the final, Deena Marshall bolstered her medal hopes in her two stronger events, the 200 metres and the 4x100 metres relay.

Marshall began her day in the heats of the 200, easing to a 22.97 in Heat 3. The only way to ensure she would advance was to win that final heat, and she did just that, attacking the turn and entering the straightaway with a five meter lead. That allowed her to tune down over the final 40, smiling as she crossed the line with a spot in the finals in hand.

A few events later, she used that same strong turn to propel the one-lap relay team. Running third in a quartet of Nefi Pardo, Tara Samman, and anchor Maria Musedi, Marshall took the baton around the same time as the Euran Oceania Territories, Banija, and Tropicorp teams and handed off a slight lead to Musedi, which the 100-metre national champion was able to hold to the end. The Flames won Heat 2 in a time of 43.02, also booking a spot in the final.

"We're really happy with the performance today," Marshall said. "Our handoffs were super smooth, and if we do that every time, our legs can take it from there."

For Pardo, the hurdles specialist, it was redemption for her 100-metres hurdles heat, where she clipped the seventh barrier and never recovered, stumbling to a 13.06 that was not good enough for the top 8. Her male counterpart, Brad Bohanan, suffered a similar fate in the men's 400 hurdles, chopping his stride on several barriers and fading to fifth in his heat with a 49.61. Bohanan will return later in the week in pursuit of a mixed 4x400 relay medal.

Alex Greeley, meanwhile, had the same schedule as Marshall - the mixed relay yesterday, the 200 and 4x100 today - but could not quite reach all three finals as Marshall did. He got a bad start and entered the straightaway last, with his top speed only moving him up to sixth in a time of 20.87. But he recovered to join Marlon Santiago, Danil Bentley, and Roussel Nieves in the 4x100 and finish second in Heat 3, in a season-best time of 38.48, and qualify for the final.

It is Nieves' second final, after he earned a personal best in the long jump to join the medal hunt there. He'll try to make it all three finals tomorrow in the 100 metres, with Musedi set to run the women's heats in the same event. But all eyes will be on the field as the shot put and long jump medals will be decided. The Delaclav jumpers Nieves and Samman, as well as the putters Carson Mason and Michelle Lane, are all in the chase for the gold, and in fine form with personal bests in the heats.

Sarzonia has seen its home region of Atlantian Oceania conduct sporting competitions in events other than football in years past. It became a stalwart in the Atlantian Oceania Lacrosse Classic, an event it previously hosted. It competed in a hockey championship and inaugurated the region's gridball competition, among others.

With the upheaval surrounding the Foxchester Declaration and the loss of several longtime regionmates to the breakaway Anaia region still fresh in mind, most of the would-be Sarzonian delegations to the AOlympic Games were in no mood to compete in sport except for one exception. Sarzonian lacrosse.

Jordan Helms, recently off his country's first World Lacrosse Championship title in 21 cycles, which could be as many as centuries or as little as about a decade depending on how you account for time, was leading his charges to the fifth edition of the AOLC. It would be under different circumstances than usual and it would be a larger collection of competing teams than usual, but the mainstays were there. There was archrival Banija, the team that went to Franz Braddock Stadium in Woodstock and deprived the Stars of the honour of winning the title in front of a rabidly partisan crowd. There was Baker Park, another mainstay of the sport, who watched the Stars win a championship on their home soil.

There would also be new countries competing in the sport. There was Milchama, a country that was returning to international competition after its own great isolation. The Stars greeting them on the lacrosse pitch with an easy 19-5 victory in which the Stars dominated the faceoff X, as they did so often during the run to their sixth world title. There was Valanora, which pushed the Stars to the brink before Sarzonia finally prevailed 12-10.

The Stars would face Baker Park next, and the experienced team challenged the Stars to a point before Sarzonia held the Commonwealth's team to three second half goals en route to a 16-12 victory for Sarzonia. There was still Oontaz left. And there was Pacitalia. The two countries may not have had experience against each other in lacrosse, but the same couldn't be said of other competitions, especially AOCAF. Sarzonia were second fiddle to the Blue Foxes for a couple of their double-digit title runs in AOCAF.

Helms said the lax Stars weren't thinking of the football exploits, and he had to be reminded of That Match.

"No, that's a completely different sport," he said. "We're focusing on one thing when we face Pacitalia, and that's winning the match and doing the things we need to against them."

But That Match?

"What do you mean?" Helms asked. That Match, as Sarzonian media took to calling it, was the one that felt like a dream sequence where the 16th seeded Stars, a team that barely sneaked into the knockout rounds, somehow incredibly shocked Pacitalia, not only defeating a championship-calibre side, but dealing a historic 5-0 beatdown. That was, until Bazalonian officials were caught in scarcely explained "irregularities" that forced a replay of the match, in which a now-wary Blue Foxes defeated the Stars 1-0 to properly eliminate them from the AOCAF knockout rounds.

"I doubt we'll ever get a situation like that one again," Helms said. That was, until he was reminded that TJUN-ia described a group stage match in the Cup of Harmony that saw them defeat the Stars 3-1 but then "irregularities" forced a replay that Sarzonia won 4-3.

"Lightning doesn't strike three times, does it?" Helms asked. "At least I hope not."

AO hosting Regional Games
by Rory Gerlinger
The Guardian

In tandem with AOCAF 64 in Equestria, the region is also putting on a variety of events across several sports in conjunction with the tournament. Called the AOlympic Games, several nations are hosting regional championships in basketball, baseball, football, hockey, track & field, lacrosse, rugby 7's—the Commonwealth is putting on the region's inaugural competition—curling, quidditch, and a racing series which will include a stop at the Drummond Vale Circuit.

A quick rundown of the events that Baker Park are sending competitors to vie for medals among the nations in the “Home of Sports”:

Basketball—a mixed gender squad will participate for the second in the AOBC, being held in Turori. Expectations at Baker Park Basketball are tempered following the showing at the last International Basketball Championships, so an opportunity to reach the medal round eliminations would be considered a success.

Hockey—Siovanija & Teusland are the hosts and a strong team is being offered by the CHF after a 3rd place finish in AOHC 7, the nation's first appearance in the tourney.

Lacrosse—Baker Park hosted the most recent edition of the World Championship, won by Sarzonia, and much of the team that participated then will look to win the regional title away from Banija and the Stars, among others in a strong field being assembled in Banija.

Rugby 7's—The CRU are hosting 17 other nations over a three day weekend in Middletown, most of whom are relatively new to this version of the sport; the Commonwealth's few forays in international competition and the home field advantage certainly make the Hoops a favorite for Gold.

Track & Field—With two previous Summer Olympic meets under their belt, the ACC is optimistic about the performance of the team they are sending to Banija. A limited program of events provides for the ability to put the best available athletes out to compete. Additionally, archery is also being offered as an adjunct event and the Commonwealth are dispatching their previous male & female Olympians to take part.

Curling—Baker Park was a last minute entry to this competition, and although there is a strong, yet small community for the sport here, there's not too much expectation that the team will be much more than a make weight representative in Vilita.

Motor Racing—The modest success of Scuderia Orange Cow in the WGP2 season was encouraging enough that the team has chosen to support an entry into this spec single make series, which will include races on a wide range of track types and lengths. Jordan Crowe, SOC's test driver, will be joined by Nick Unger, who also did preliminary pre-season testing for the team, and Sammi Carter, a rising star in the CommOil GT Select Series. The 1.57 mile Vale Course at DVRC will host the 6th event of the competition.

"Gah! It turns out the Olympics are overwhelming"

"Yes they are! There is so much happening all the time. We really don't know what to do or who to focus on"

"Like today we played hockey, basketball, track, lacrosse, rugby, and baseball"

"Can you at least give me the breakdown?"

"Sure, we're doing well in everything except basketball"

"Oh wow that's excellent!"

"Yeah we're 2-1 in baseball. Got to quarterfinals in rugby, it's rugby sevens so short tournaments, did ok in lacrosse, are 1-2 in basketball, and were top finishers in two different events in track in the early heats"

"Sheesh that is a lot of action"

"Yeah, it's kinda ridiculous"

"How were we able to enter so many players?"

"So it turns out people want to travel abroad so everybody who can is signing up for sports and just going for it"

"Oh that's cool"

"It really is"

"So let's talk about the two most important sports right now; baseball and curling"

"What about rugby sevens? We finished in first in our group and have a quarterfinal tomorrow. That might be our first medal!"

"Can you name one player on the team?"

"Milly Hemston"

"She plays quidditch. That's my point"

"Fine. Well curling hasn't started yet. Group draw is tomorrow"

"Are we favorites?"

"I honestly have no idea because curling only became popular in Milchama during the Isolation so nobody can really say how well we will internationally. I would say so based on the Sabra. Millardson looks like a strong team. He was hitting 92% across the Sabra which is ridiculous. If they hit shots like that it should be easy"

"What about baseball?"

"2-1. We beat Valanora in 15 innings"

"Wow! Yeah a walk off 3 run homer by Selah Jones"

"And this is only the U21 team. Imagine what will happen when we bring the full team to the WBC."

"The government just decreed it will be the U23 team"

"Why?"

"No idea. Kinda dumb to be honest"

"Ok"

"So it's soccer bad, basketball bad, basically every other sport good"

"Yep"

"That's awesome"

"It really is"

"I hope we can keep it up."

"Me too"

"Come on you Warriors!"

"Let's go Milchama!"

AO Games Day 4: Delaclava lead medal table as first golds awarded

Who would've thought that the Delaclava delegation, a relatively last-minute entry to the AOlympic Games, would be the very first nation to sit atop the medal table? Well, believe it; the first four podiums were decided, and it was Roussel Nieves who scored an upset victory in the men's long jump with a best attempt of 8.16 metres. And not to be left far behind, shot putter Carson Mason smashed Rastislav Ivanov's decades-old national record to win silver, with a throw of 21.37 metres.

In addition to plenty of good track news to go around, the Delaclava hockey team went to 2-0 with a 3-2 win over Qasden. After an unexpectedly tough opener against Romsten, the win over a more reputed squad gives the Phoenixes plenty of confidence moving forward.

Let's recap all the action, shall we?

Track and field: Nieves, Mason lead the way as more records fall

The highlight of the day for the Delaclav delegation was Roussel Nieves' long jump gold medal. Nieves was expected to contend more for the sprint medals, but he inserted himself into the long jump conversation after qualifying in fourth. He put himself immediately in great position to medal - after faulting his first jump, he tied his personal best of 8.11 metres to move into a tie for second place, not far behind Valanora's Maik Durr, with a jump of 8.15 metres.

As the field culled down from 12 to 8 jumpers after three attempts, Nieves remained tied with Squornshelous' Kasper Larsson, while Banija's Oleichi Obote bettered their mark by just a centimeter to take sole second. But Nieves' chances of a victory wore thin as he faulted on jump 4 and registered an 8.02 on the 5th attempt, not improving his standing. Meanwhile, with Durr consistently clearing 8 metres, it seemed only a matter of time before the Vanorian put the competition away.

Then Nieves was really in trouble in the sixth round, as Vilita's jumper improved from 8.08 to 8.14, vaulting into silver himself and pushing Nieves entirely off the podium with one jump left. After watching Baker Park's Leon Hall land harmlessly in the high 7s, Nieves took a few deep breaths, clapped his hand together, then tore down the runway, hit the board, and sailed through the air. Nieves seemed to believe he had improved his standing, and he roared in delight and disbelief as the scoreboard read 8.16, a centimeter better than Durr.

And to cap it all off, Durr took the final jump of the day and got something that was obviously close to reclaiming the top spot. After several moments of suspense and confirmation, Durr's final attempt was announced as 8.14 and a sobbing Nieves collapsed to the ground. It marked his first international victory, a kind of opportunity he wasn't sure he'd get. Durr ended with silver and VIlita the bronze.

And to outdo himself, Nieves came back later to win his 100 metres heat in a time of 10.25. After qualifying for all three of his finals and winning one, he'll hope to recover quickly, as he'll have a real shot at accomplishing more in Istria. His female counterpart, Maria Musedi, won her heat in 11.39, qualifying for her second final along with the 4x100 relay.

Carson Mason's day didn't end in quite the same triumphant matter, but he professed that he was happy with all he managed to accomplish. Improbably, he broke his own national record - that he set in qualifying - with his very first attempt of 21.37 metres. At that point, Mason seemed to know that his only path forward was to keep taking more risks, but all his efforts resulted in fouls or worse throws that he conceded.

"It was hard to know exactly what else I could squeeze out of myself today," Mason said. "I knew Lev (Koppel) would be coming for me with something big. I just had to keep searching for some extra." Ultimately, Mason never found it, and Koppel agonizingly took the lead over with his very last throw of 21.43 metres. Regardless, Mason has his head held high: "I came here with no expectations and left with the national record and a continental medal. I'll take it and come back to fight another day!" Max Amsel of Valanora took the bronze.

Delaclava was also in play for the women's shot put and long jump, but fell a bitter fourth in both. Much like Mason, Michelle Lane smashed her own national record - by nearly a meter and a half! - with an opening throw of 20.09, but could not strain for any further improvements, and could only watch helplessly as Vilita's putter, Elif Lundin of Valanora, and Chikelu Chikere of Banija passed her by for gold, silver, and bronze. But Lane also takes an optimistic attitude to her performance: "I needed something I'd never done before just to qualify, and I needed even more than that to make the final eight, or to finish fourth. I got it all. I got beat by women who are better than me and I can't wait to compete against them again!"

Tara Samman, meanwhile, found herself coming from behind in the women's long jump, lagging behind Chinecherem Ugoorji's opening jump of 7.00 that proved to be the golden leap for Banija in the end. Myra Nyman (Valanora) and Birgitte Utkin (Squornshelous) won the silver and bronze. Samman improved on her personal best in the 2nd round with 6.67, equaled that in the 5th round, then surpassed it with her final jump of 6.79 metres. It was the best she had, and yet it wasn't quite enough for the podium. She returns later in the 4x100 relay with her best shot at a medal.

Hockey: Abreu leads the way as Phoenixes take control

Captain Jehiel Abreu's goal and assist in the first 10 minutes of the contest made the difference as Delaclava defeated Qasden 3-2 to move to the top of Group B at the AO Hockey Championships.

Abreu's team put pressure on the opponents early and drew two penalties in the opening stages. The first power play was fruitless, but Abreu converted the second one after timing up a wrist shot, taking the point pass from Antoine Clement. Just 1:42 later, Abreu forced a turnover around center ice and fed Ted Malone, the hero against Romsten, the puck for the easy tap-in.

The two sides split goals in the second period, with Calum Dunn converting a breakaway to put the Phoenixes up 1. Qasden forced Delaclava into a more defensive posture for much of the third period and drew within one goal with seven minutes remaining, but the veteran netminder Tom Sutton held firm to the end, completing a performance with 31 saves on 33 shots.

With Valanora on a bye day, Delaclava takes sole possession of first place with a record of 2 wins, no losses. While they are likely treating this tournament as a warmup for the World Cup of Hockey in Kelssek, they nevertheless would take great pride in a strong performance and potentially a medal in this competition.

HOME WIN, OONTAZ PODIUM GIVE YEEZIES AOMC LEAD

by Kaylyn Husker

After finishing just ninth in the Atlantian Oceania Motorsports Championship opener, the Kanyean delegation, represented by the three drivers of Glorious Free Republic Motorsports, vowed to make some improvements as the tournament went on. After the opening round at the Serizawa Racing Circuit in Aji No Moto, they headed home to the Kardashia Autoring in the Yeezie capital, and then to the Zuma Superspeedway in Oontaz. The results of both rounds were enough to propel St. Kanye to the top of the point standings with 57 points, ahead of Baker Park with 53 and Aji No Moto and Turori tied for third with 32.

First let's look at the event at the Kardashia Autoring. Jeremiah Brooke finished second to River Suzgar in the first heat, but Thea Alvarez DNFed in the second heat, meaning Brooke will be St. Kanye's only representative in the main event. It was here that he would lead 47 of 75 laps, including the last thirteen, as he would hold off Baker Park's Jordan Crowe as well as Suzgar for the victory. "It's nice that we were able to get it done at home," said Brooke. "Hopefully this will be the start of us getting our gold medal campaign back on track."

In Oontaz, Brooke once again got to drive, since it was the slower of each country's two qualifiers to make it to the starting field. Like in Kardashia, he would have a good run, but only manage second place as Ajian Chiemi Hino beat him to the line by 0.053 second. "I'm not even mad," he said. "Chiemi was in her element during the whole race. Hopefully her performance would get people noticing her, and maybe she could make a return to the NSSCRA one day." Third place went to [REDACTED] of Equestria.

The next AOMC event would be taking place in the rally-crazy country of Aboveland; it will be a "reverse grid challenge" at the Fjellutfordring course in Avsidesliggendevuoret city. "I've never been to Aboveland, to be honest," said Alvarez. "I'm excited to be there, maybe Terho [Talvela, Abovian WGPC champion and one-time GFR member] could take us on a trip to see the best of the country? I mean, if he or any of his teammates doesn't mind, of course."

Vilita & Turori Strike Gold in Banija

Olympic City, Istria, Banija :: In a perfect warm up for the up-coming Multiverse Wide Olympic Games in Electrum, the Vilita and Turori Track and Field Team have already claimed their first medals of the AOlympics in Banija striking gold in the Women's Shot Put and backing that up with a Bronze Medal in the Men's Long Jump.

While not traditionally known as a hot bed of Shot Put - with Javelin and Long Jump the more traditional Vilitan Field events, the Mountain Women of the Inland Peaks region have stepped up their game and proven to be best in the region at their discipline. After posting the second best score after the first round to proceed into the final, Vilita & Turori's female shot put star Amasaqii Yetizon laid down a 20.41 on her second to last attempt to overtake the Vanorians and claim gold for her nation.

It was the first day of individual medal action with the Athletes from Squornshelous earning the days first Gold in the Men's Shot Put competition which the Vilita and Turori Track and Field Team did not qualify for the Medal Round.

The other medal event on the day was in the Long Jump competition where Vilita and Turori qualified to compete on the Men's side but not in the Women's event. The home crowd at the Olympic City were thrilled when the Banijan jumper Oleichi Obote jumped 8.12m to seemingly give the home team a medal. Banija's score would remain second best behind the Vanorian opener until each jumpers final attempt when the rest of the field finally stepped up to take down the hosts. Delaclava's Roussel Nieves would narrowly out-jump the Vanorian to steal gold at the last leap while Vilita and Turori would take home a surprise bronze medal with a personal best jump while knocking Banija off the medal podium.

While Track and Field will take a break on the next matchday there will be much for Vilita and Turori to look forward to in their favored event, the 100m sprint. Though narrowly missing out on the Women's final by just 0.03s, Vilita and Turori will be favored to medal in the Men's 100m having won their qualifying heat with the second fastest overall time.

Millardson Starts out Strong in Curling

The most important event for many in the AOlympics just started with the AOCC or the Atlantian Oceania Curling Championship getting underway today. After a bye in the first draw Team Millardson went undefeated beating unnamed teams from Geisenfried and Euran Oceania Territories. The shot making in both games was excellent by all 4 Milchamians with Millardson in particular doing very well including an incredible cross house double take out in the 3rd end to score 3 against Geisenfried. A little recap from Millardson, "We've been playing well today. The preparation was good, the shots have been good, and the strategy has worked out. We always said we're an offensive team and I think it showed today."

In game 1 the Milchamians started off with the hammer and got into a fantastic position after a miss by the vice on Geisenfried on a half guarded take out in the 6th shot. From there Millardson was easily able to convert for two on hammer for a 2-0 lead. Without hammer they got a force, and then third end was where things really got going for the Milchamians. While Demson missed her first shot to give Geisenfried an opening and it looked like it would be exploited for a steal of at least 1 if not 2 as they had shot and third stone separated across the eight foot. Millardson slammed it shut with an incredible cross ice double take out to take 3 and from there it was smooth sailing. Geisenfried shook after 9 and Milchama was off to a promising start.

The second game against EOT was much tougher for Millardson. An uncharacteristic loss of the hammer in the first end was compounded when a missed draw on the 7th shot gave EOT two points. From there it was comeback mode. While blanking the second and being forced in the third, the Milchamians were able to get two back in the fourth after a great shot by Resmond to split the house forcing the EOT to try an incredible double that nearly came off but didn't. The fifth was another force and it was tied 3-3 going into the 5th end break. From there Milchama turned it on, scoring two with hammer, forcing two blanks, then the force in 8 followed by 2 in the 9th for a 7-4. After that a team known for its hitting was easily able to the Territories out of stones for an easy 7-4 victory.

Of course Millardson's victories were not the only story from Day 1. The other big story from Day 1 at curling was the ice conditions. Both Vilita and Turori are tropical paradises and there were a lot of questions coming into the tournament about whether the ice in both places would be up to the task of hosting an international tournament. While the ice was consistent and relatively swingy it was noticeably slower than typical Sabra Cup ice or even some good club ice up in the Mongol region or even in nearby Geisen rinks across the straight. One thing throughout both Milchamian games as well as other games were a number of missed draws by many teams that people would expect them to make. This was especially notable for Team Yalaz of Busoga where she was light twice in tight situations against Squornshelous in their 9-7 loss in the third draw. Missed draws happen, even in international competitions, but the direction of draws consistently being light points to a possibly deeper problem of the Vilitan being too slow to too inconsistent for the competitors. As Eve Demson said, "Look the ice might not be ideal right now but both teams have to play on the same sheet and it's all about adjustment. No two sheets are going to be the same and that's just curling."

In the icemaker's favor the ice was very consistent. The swing being a little over 6 ft and the speed, while slow, was a consistent 11 seconds hog to hog. That consistency has paid off as all teams seemed to get a little more accurate as the games went on throughout each draw. So that seems good. However, since average club ice is still 14 to 15 seconds hog to hog 11 second ice is unreasonably slow for an international tournament. We will promise to monitor the situation as the AOCC continues.

Of course the weird ice probably suits Millardson because one thing that has been consistently good about Team Millardson this season on the circuit was their ice adjustment practice and you saw it again today as they consistently went for hits where draws would do or possibly even be preferable. Since the draw game was so hard to pull off consistently a few big hits that would cut through the slowness tended to work better for Millardson.

In additional news Milchama also made the quarterfinals in lacrosse but so far so good from curling in the AOlympics.

Squornshelans Impress in Track and Field, Team Sports a Mixed Bag

Athletes from Squornshelous claimed the first gold medal of these games, as well as a bronze later the same day, continuing a strong showing in track and field events. Lev Koppel qualified in first place in the shot put on day one, despite only having one of his efforts counted. In the final, he was out of the medal picture the whole way through, struggling to break through the 21 meter mark. In his final attempt though, he delivered a clutch performance, and reached 21.43 to catapult himself up from seventh place to the top spot, claiming the gold medal in dramatic fashion. In the women's competition, Tanja Litvinoff had qualified with the third best throw of preliminaries, but was unable to keep pace in the final, falling short of 20 meters for a fifth place finish. Respectable, but not what she was hoping for.

From there, it was over to the long jump, where Kasper Larsson was a surprise contender after qualifying in twelfth. His leap of 8.11 had him in medal position with just one attempt to go, but he wasn't able to deliver any improvement on that mark, and in the end fell just two centimeters short of bronze, finishing fifth. On the women's side, Brigitte Utkin, who qualified in second place, managed to take home bronze on the strength of an excellent first leap. She might be left wondering what might have been, as all but one of her subsequent attempts were counted out.

All three archery teams, look to be medal threats as well after qualification. The lone track event of the first day was an uncharacteristically slow series of 4x400 mixed relay heats, with the Squornshelan team finishing just barely well enough to make the final. They won't be expected to feature in the medal picture though. Days two and three saw qualifying heats in some of the short distance events, and the remaining relays. Squornshelous made the finals in both 200m races and hurdle events, but of those athletes only Gustav Norling appears to be a genuine medal threat. The same is not the case for the 100 meter heats. Despite poor performances from both 4x100 meter relay teams, Squornshelan sprinters made the finals in both individual events, with Juni Eld placing sixth, and Jokum Yakovlev leading all qualifiers with a time of 10.22.

In contrast to track and field, team sports have largely been disappointing thus far. The sevens team was eliminated in the preliminary round, though they were the best team not to advance to the quarterfinals, recording wins against Pacitalia and Merulantis, and a draw with Valanora. The Hockey tournament has been an unmitigated disaster so far, with Squornshelous losing three straight to open the tournament. The latest of these was at least respectable, with the Red and Black pushing group favorites Gyatso-kai into overtime. Unfortunately, these results mean Squornshelous now has no chance at advancement, and will play out a couple meaningless games against opposition who, while not mathematically eliminated, also have very little chance to make the quarters. Their 13 goals against is second-worst in the entire tournament field, and there will have to be some serious soul-searching done before any subsequent tournament entries. Over in the AOCAF Cup, the Red and Black have also been eliminated, but went out with a spirited performance in a 3-1 win over Aji No Moto. The only real bright spot among team competitions has been the curling competition, where Skip Sergey Laxdal and his team have won three straight games. It hasn't been a dominating performance per se. All three victories, over Pacitalia, Misrantis, and the Busoga Islands, have been close ones, decided by two stones or fewer. Still, it's an encouraging start, especially with so many other of our teams going nowhere fast.

Local quartet to rep BP on ice
Sophia Griffith
Star-News Sports Department

Two couples from St Tim's Borough will be heading to Vilita to compete in the Atlantian Oceania Curling Championships representing the Commonwealth of Baker Park in the competition, marking the first time the nation has participated in international curling.

Stephanie Douglas, her husband Michael along with Beth & Peter Holloran will comprise the four member team; they have won 3 St Leon state titles since they began in the sport 11 years ago and 2 of the last 4 Eastern Regional championships.

That idea that curling is a popular pastime in the state may come as a surprise to many, yet there are over 800 registered players in the sport, part of a wider participation across the Commonwealth that numbers around 6,000 according to the Olympic Committee of the Commonwealth (OCC).

For the uninitiated, curling involves attempting to get your 'stone' closest to the center of the bullseye target at the opposite end of a sheet of ice while preventing the opposing team an opportunity to the same. There are four members to a side: the "Skip", who is the captain of the team; the "Vice", whose role sounds like what it is; the "Lead" and the "Second", who take their turns obviously in that order.

Stephanie Douglas is the skip while Peter Holloran is the vice on this team, which keeps thing harmonious in the same way that married couples should never play card games together.

"Yes, that is true!", says Mrs. Douglas, with a laugh in a phone interview. "The fact is, there's a lot of collaboration between everyone on the team in deciding how to play shots and reacting to the changing circumstances as an end proceeds."

The Douglas/Holloran team were a late addition to the tournament, as the OCC waffled on a decision, then another team from Osheana declined the invitation; it's not hindered the group who have won their first two matches in pool play.
"We've not been here long enough to worry about how well we're supposed to be doing, so I suppose we'll just keep playing until they tell us to go home!"

Hamonii eyes AORDO General Support, Closer Ties with EOT

Dr. J. Hamonii was watching the AOlympic Games Broadcast while strategizing with his team regarding the application they had tossed in for the position of AORDO General. Surely it was a wild and lofty goal. Hamonii's background certainly wasn't in defense - but perhaps the head of AORDO didn't need to be a skilled military general. Thats what the Individual Commanders would have in front of them, surely, but at the top - Perhaps someone like Hamonii with vision and demonstrated leadership would be a good alternative to the type of structure that ultimately led to the split in the previous AORDO leadership.

While it sounded good on paper, in practice, Hamonii could feel support slowly trending toward the experienced Military Veteran, Field Marshal Reinhard Drachmann of Siovanija & Teusland. Drachmann certainly had the support of certain nations in the South West and was involved in the Banija-Farfadillis Nuclear crisis - after which the Banijan's came out publicly in support of Drachmann. In order to be successful in the bid to become AORDO General, Hamonii would need to find some Allies of his own.

First, Hamonii decided to review his notes on the candidates he was aware of or suspected of being Nominated for the various positions that were open in the AORDO Cabinet and potentially identify some other Allies within the nominees.
AORDO Headquarters

[BNJ] Busukuma, National Capitol Region, Banija
[AOI] AOIsland, Aoisle, AO Isle, Atlantian Oceania
- Purpose Built Location on Mainland Calania?

AORDO General

[S&T] Field Marshal Reinhard Drachmann
[TRP] Dr. J. Hamonii
- Falcanian Nominee?
- Sarzonian Nominee?

AORDO Air Forces

[SQU] Colonel Per Arlberg
[GKI] Lieutenant General TANG Tor'audhr
-Pacitalia Nominee?

AORDO Naval Forces

[S&T] Grand Admiral Alfred Reinmann
[CBP] Admiral William D. 'Sandy' Sanderson
- Milchaman Nominee?
- Sarzonian Nominee?

AORDO Space Forces

[VIL] Dr. Orca Krenii'i

AORDO Special Forces

[TUR] Nigel the Esteemed Electric Limefish
- Vanorian Nominee?

Clearly Hamonii would have to reach out the two known nominees for Command of the Air Forces, Colonel Per Arlberg of Squornshelous and Lietenant General Tang Tor'audhr of Gyatso-kai to see if an Alliance could be made. There was also the possibility of a fruitful discussion with Admiral Sanderson who himself seemed to be campaigning against a nominee from Siovanija and Teusland and may serve well to distance themselves from support of Drachmann as a result. Without a large number of major nominees with existing alliances, however, Hamonii would have to look elsewhere to gain more support.

Staring at the large map of Atlantian Oceania on the wall, Hamonii knew where he needed to go. Long time trade and technology routes through Krytenia to the Cocoabo Forest had been greatly altered by the fallout from the Foxchester Scenario. To the east, however, Tropicorp's closest neighbor remained still in the midst of an internal debate between citizens of various origin - the Euran Oceania Territories.

Hamonii watched on with great anticipation as the Euran driver Matt Sanders bypassed Aji No Moto's Kyoko Fujisaki to take the Gold Medal in the AOMC's Reverse Grid Challenge at the Fjellutfordring in Aboveland. He h ad been glad there was some excitement in the event as Tropicorp's drivers, Euroli Islander and Yraaga Gilli'i had struggled throughout the AOMC thus far and were unable to drive through the field at the Abovian Grand Prix circuit like some of their rivals had done.

Hamonii felt the result would be the perfect Ice Breaker to reach out to Lets Go AO Campaign director Amber Ward to discuss ways to strengthen the relationship between Tropicorp and the Euran Oceania Territories, who each currently occupy opposite Calanian Coastlines along the same geodesic across the heart of central Atlantian Oceania. In the wake of Foxchester and on-again off-again discussions about harboring refugees in the Great Calanian Desert, relocation, land reclamation and Cartographic uncertainty particulary in Northern Calania, there have been calls for Hamonii to use Tropicorp's experience in development of the Cocoabo Forest to step forward again in this new post-foxchester environment.

A small technical entity, however, would have much more of a voice at the table if it were partnered alongside its neighbors in a show of unity among the remaining inhabitants of mainland Calania. Hamonii decided to craft a letter to Ward, offering to meet with members of the Lets Go AO contingent and discuss how the Euran Oceania Territories could benefit from closer ties to Tropicoast. Of course, Hamonii would also mention their rogue candidacy for the role of AORDO General but, as they continued writing the letter, the AORDO conversation had become secondary to the real opportunities for collaboration between the two.

AO Bowl / AOLC Group Stage Wrap Up

Postby Vilita and Turori » Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:13 pm

Turori Survive Difficult AO Bowl Group

Image

Olympic City, Istria, Banija :: Turori's reign as champions of the AO Bowl was given an extension following Matchday 5 of Group Play when the Eels Gridiron Squad claimed a 27-14 victory over Equestria to secure their place in the Quarter-Final round.

Going into the second half of Group Play Turori's advancement was anything but assured. With just one victory in their opening three matchdays it seemed as if Turori would be heading for an early AO Bowl exit and a performance far below that expected for two time former NS Bowl Champion nation and the defending champions of the AO Bowl itself. However, without competing in the World Bowl the Turori Eels Gridiron squad had fewer opportunities to go head to head with quality competition when compared with some of their Group A counterparts. As a result, it took Turori a few games to get settled into the competition and they entered Matchday 4 in a "Must Win" situation against Group leaders Siovanija & Teusland. Turori got the win they needed and did so comfortably by a scoreline of 26-6 but still found themselves outside the Top 4 heading into the final game of group play.

It would all change with the victory over Equestria as Turori for the first time in the competition had a winning record and had jumped up to third place in the Group, more than enough to secure a Knockout Round berth. Turori actually finished Group A competition with the most points scored in the group and second most overall in the competition behind only Group B winner the Busoga Islands. Turori's opponent in the Quarter Finals would be Valanora who were second place in Group B suffering just one defeat from five Group Stage matches. It should be a fairly even matchup between two teams known for their performances in another kind of Football. The winner of the Valanora v. Turori matchup at the Sun Valley Stadium in Busukuma would move on to play the winner of Siovanija & Teusland v. Pacitalia at Mavuto Field in Hoima.

While the Turori Gridiron Squad fought their way into the Knockout Rounds with an impressive string of back-to-back victories, the Vilita & Turori Lacrosse squad took a different path on their quest to the knockout rounds, losing late in the Group to Equestria but still managing to advance despite their losing record and negative goal differential. It is expected that the Eel-Cat Things Lacrosse run will come to a quick end in the Quarter-Final round as they will be forced to face off against regional Lacrosse powerhouse Sarzonia. The Stars, who made the decision to focus solely on the Lacrosse competition in the AOlympics, have finished on the podium in every previous edition of the Atlantian Oceania Regional Lacrosse Championships, having finished 3rd in the first and second editions, winning the third edition and finishing runner-up in the most recently completed Atlantian Oceania Lacrosse Competition. While a victory for Vilita & Turori seems highly unlikely in the Quarter Finals, there is always a chance and the Eel-Cat Things will take a shot at breaking through for the first time in organized Lacrosse.

The phone call came in hours after Chris Entwistle came home from his latest round of press.

The Sarzonian national Quidditch team manager was still making the rounds after his team won its second Quidditch World Cup and its fourth overall medal. He'd been feted as a hero along with Katie Sampson, who was still getting the heroine treatment for her guiding the Sarzonian Aussie Rules Football team to its second World Cup title and third medal in three tries.

"Chris, we've entered a team in the Quidditch competition in the AOlympic games," the person on the other end said. "We want you to gather your team together again and compete."

"But we've all just wrapped up our team activities. We've done our bit for king and country. Now let us relax!"

"You'll have more time to relax when this is done, Chris. We can't have our lacrosse team be our only competitors in these Games. Oh, and we're including a few additional players to add some depth, including Jordan Gordon."

"Who's he?"

"They. They're non-binary."

Entwistle shrugged, more annoyed at the prospect of returning to competition so soon after leading his team to the World Cup trophy than he was at the prospect of having an enby on the team. After all, he remembered Elynn Davis was gender non-conforming. He didn't see why it was something that was worth mentioning.

But the fact that Gordon came through the doors looking for all the world like they were feeling isolated and scared and then saw Davis rush up to embrace them and then Entwistle saw the huge smile on their face, and then it became clear. Davis was no longer alone. Gordon certainly would not walk onto this team alone. They'd have each other to bounce off any frustrations or anger about being treated differently if that treatment came from other, potentially more hostile opponents. They'd have their teammates who'd already long since embraced Davis. And, the Stars would have more depth in the event of injury, which was the one area of concern for the two-time champions.

It wasn't ideal for Entwistle and company, but they would do everything in their power to make it work.

On the lacrosse pitch, the Sarzonian national lacrosse team, coming off their dominant performance leading to their sixth World Lacrosse Championship title ran the table in the group stage yet again, this time punctuating their 5-0 finish with a closer-than-expected 8-3 victory over Pacitalia. Manager Jordan Helms quickly realised the match would be tougher than he thought when both teams jogged to their respective dressing rooms at halftime with Sarzonia clinging to a 4-2 lead. The Stars scored the first two goals of each period, only to have Pacitalia answer back with a single goal each time. Then it was the Blue Foxes' turn to draw first blood to start the second half and cut the gap to one goal. They'd hold Sarzonia off the score sheet for the next eight minutes before attack Colin Grassley finally tickled the twine past the Pacitalian goaltender.

Sarzonia would score the only three goals of the fourth quarter to put the match away and set up the Stars against Vilita and Turori in the quarterfinals of the AOLC. The Cat-Eel Things were 2-3 and had a negative-3 goal differential compared to Sarzonia's plus-37, but Helms warned the team and observers about looking past Vilita and Turori, especially to a potential final against Banija.

"If we don't take care of business against Vilita and Turori, there won't be a rematch with Banija," he said.

Team Aboveland | Rosters

After a number of missed calls, the Abovian Olympic Commitee finally replied to the government's urgent request for signs of life in the wake of the Abovian delegation's AOlympic debut. Despite the tardiness of the reveal of the rosters, and after days of competition wherein no Abovian athletes, save for the AOMC competitors, had their names displayed on any screens, the AOC hopes that the delegation's fortunes will improve between now and the end of the event. They extend their sincere apologies to rival delegations for having sent various teams' worth of nameless athletes.

Driver 1 | Terho Talvela (Brukkifordet, Aboveland)

Born in Tyttebærsby and raised in Brukkifordet, 31-year-old Terho Talvela spearheads Team Aboveland's AOMC entry, fresh out of retirement from the World Grand Prix Championships with three drivers' titles to his name. Initially hesitant to take the plunge considering his lack of luck in motorsport competition beyond the WGPC—floundering in the Hodori Rally Championship and never quite getting up to speed in iBen's Race of Stars series—the Abovian eventually accepted the chance to renew his fighting spirit on the racetrack, and to once again duel with his long-standing teammate iBen Toralmintii.

Driver 2 | Per-Gunnar Kristiansen (Ayarii, Aboveland)

Harkening from the plundered ex-capital of Ayarii, Per-Gunnar Kristiansen gets his first outing in international motorsport in the AOMC, after plans to contest the latest season of the Hodori Rally Championship fell through owing to a lack of funding. The experienced 27-year-old rose to prominence on the folkrace events of southern Aboveland, predominantly held on asphalt courses as opposed to the traditional dirt formats, yet never managed to scrape enough cash to funnel into a proper campaign abroad. He's renowned for his meticulous, clinical driving style, though despite the relative ease he shows behind the wheel, he's been known to be mentally fragile.

Reserve | Taavi Kiirejäävõisteja (Timantirkas, Nykipiflugpuu)

Youngest on the team by almost a decade, the young grassroots racer known affectionately as Kiiri in his native Nykipiflugpuu serves as Aboveland's AOMC backup driver. Despite a negative outing in the Nexus Racing Driver Academy run parallel to the 18th season of the WGPC, the Nykipish government, his primary backers, trust his pace and technical expertise to be better suited to the racing format of the AOMC as opposed to the demands of open-wheel competition.

Regional Games
Summarizing Aji No Moto's delegation so far in AOlympics
motorsport delegation performing well but other sports disappoints

Joshuyo - The delegation of Aji No Moto entered the AOlympics for five other sports, aside from their AOCAF Cup entry, and as the AOlympics is nearing halfway to its completion, it is time to look into the current results the delegation had for the past six days.

Vroom-vroom!: AOMC delegates bring in the medals

The AOMC representatives have performed the best among the delegates, bringing three AOMC medals so far, with one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal collected within the past six days. The first round at Aji No Moto's Serizawa Racing Circuit did not gave them any medals as expected, as the duo of Kyoko Fujisaki and Chiemi Hino struggled with the car they were driving at the time, finishing 11th and out of the points. They were left at the bottom of the standings after the race in Kardashia in Saint Kanye after another finish just short of the top 10.

Things started to turn around for the Ajians in Zama Superspeedway in Oontaz as Chiemi Hino nipped current NSSCRA champion Jeremiah Brooke on the finish line to get their first gold medal despite Kyoko Fujisaki not finishing the race after a DNF in lap 34. When the AOMC went to Fjellutfordring in Aboveland, Hino posted the 5th quickest time, and Fujisaki the 19th fastest time, but with the reverse grid rules, the latter would start 2nd and the former 16th. Fujisaki managed to keep her place to add a silver medal to the delegation's haul, although Hino finished outside of the points.

Another challenge was to the appointed #1 drivers to race the oval at Ruwani Motor Speedway, a discipline Kyoko Fujisaki is just starting to learn, and with a victory already gained in the Sankyoku Triangle Tyrone Tabuso in the AOCAR, it would help her finish in the podium, this time for the bronze medal, despite starting in a lowly ninth place. With three medals obtained and currently third in the AOMC points standings, Chiemi Hino with her experience in WGP2 and WGP3 Filindostan will hope that she would continue the nation's dazzling form at the Drummond Vale Circuit in Baker Park.

We went down swinging: Baseball delegation eliminated but not after winning a game in 25 innings

The baseball delegation got to a mediocre start in the AOBS, losing to Geisenfried but shutting out Merulantis in the first two games, then lost to Banija to fall down to a 1-2 record, but in their next game against Equestria, with the Golden Hawks down 4-6 in the bottom of the ninth, star player Mitsuhiko Murkami was able to hit a two-run homer to extend the game beyond nine innings, and after a long exchange of no-runs for the next 14 innings, a run each in the 24th extended the game by another inning. With Equestria scoring a run in the top of the 25th inning, Murkami was again the man on the moment as he hit another two-run homer to give the Ajians a shot in the playoffs if they win against Behetij...

...but it did not happen. A 7-6 loss by allowing three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning consigned them to elimination from medal contention in the AOBS after a 2-3 record in Group B.

We are puck'd: Ice Hockey delegates hopeless

The Ice hockey delegation only won one game and went out of the group stages at 1-3 before the last set of matches are played. They lost on overtime against Siovanija and Teusland, although they won their last group stage game against Aboveland.

Hanging on a basketball thread... and out: Basketball delegates eliminated after results did not go their way

The AOBC basketball delegation failed to advance from the group stages, after Pluvia and the Saxean Isles managed to beat Sultanate of Oontaz to deny a chance for the Ajians to progress to the next round of the competition. Aji No Moto had a 2-2 record but a loss to both PSI and Delaclava actually ensured the elimination even before the last set of games were played.

Punted out: Rugby Sevens delegates eliminated from medal contention

With two wins, one draw, and two losses to their name, the rugby sevens delegation came out of the AORC empty handed as they failed to get out of the group stages, only placing fourth in Group B.

With the football team's elimination from the AOCAF Cup as well, the only chance for additional medals for the Ajian delegation is from the AOMC, with five events remaining in the competition.
