"BUY EUCLEAN" WILL NOT DELIVER THE WHITE WORKING CLASS VOTE TO THE LEFT

Late last month, the two Premiers of Caldia and Gaullica, Stiofán Mac Suibhne and Mathéo Turzyna respectively, announced a new Buy Euclean initiative that would see both the Caldish and Gaullican government require that any contracts issued would be required to purchase from domestic steel suppliers. This has been hailed as a return of the "hard left" in Euclean politics, and that there would be tangible benefits for the steel industries across eastern Euclea. Indeed, the initiative looks set to be adopted by the Alslandic, Amathian, Azmaran, Borish, Estmerish, and Hennish governments, introducing mirror legislation into their national legislatures. Werania is the only major Euclean Community state to not have announced an adoption of the initiative or similar policy, and there's been no indication yet as to whether or not the von Hößlin will do so.

This represents a sudden and drastic change of policy from member states, so much so that Euclean President and the Euclean Commission have virtually been isolated overnight with the announcement, and this discord between the transnational institution and its member states might bring about more harm than good. Certainly it won't convince the EC's trading partners that both the Commission and its member states are singing from the same hymn sheet on foreign trade.

But outside of perhaps shaken foreign investor confidence and a "please explain" from the EC's major trading partners, the main motivations behind the initiative are to do with internal politics of individual member states rather than any real return to economic nationalism or protectionism. Rather it is a recognition of the political left in eastern Euclea that it may lose out on the working class vote, especially given the rise of the populist right over the last decade. To some, the initiative looks like a desperate attempt to rekindle the old left, one of strong trade unions and ostensibly for the working class. Given the transformation of the mainstream of the political left from the "hard left" to the "soft left", the social democrats, the centre-leftists, and the "Third Way" politicians, it's no surprise the white working class feels isolated, ignored, and ridiculed.

It's especially no surprise when you venture out into the smaller rural communities and see how little services these communities receive. Across north-eastern Euclea, many small villages lost basic services such as the post office, which often functioned as the local bank, where locals could post savings among other banking services provided. That went, they had to travel further. This cost extra, especially as fuel prices increase, which also resulted in an increase in public transport fares, assuming that those services still remained. More often than not they didn't, as the privatisation of public transport companies often saw unprofitable routes axed. There was also a significant shift in how rural communities were perceived, driven by social democratic parties and urban liberals who found that communities who had seen significant deindustrialisation and depopulation from the disappearance of anchor industries and employers and became resentful at the city politicians who had allowed this to happen, especially if they were manufacturing plants and factories. The outsourcing of labour to the third world created a sense of anger both towards the politicians that sanctioned the outsourcing, and the third world countries themselves for having pitiful wages and marginal workers rights. This was construed as xenophobia and racism by the urban liberals who painted the rural working class communities as out of touch with the new economic and social realities of an globalised world.

Something similar happened to working class urban communities as well. However, one significant factor that played into this was immigration. Former colonial powers such as Estmere, Gaullica, and Werania, saw significant migration to their countries from former colonies, many of whom were escaping the chaos of decolonisation. Many were also looking for economic opportunities that their former masters could provide, and so tens of thousands of Coians, particularly those from Bahia and Rahelia, moved to these countries. There was little in the way of widespread xenophobia or racism by the standards of the time, primarily because the social stratification and economic policies meant that migrants often filled labourial or otherwise unpleasant jobs that the working class white men and women wouldn't consider, and reflected what many in those countries assumed was the correct way a society should be. But this was only to last as long as the good economic times could ever last, and as with all things, it eventually came to an end. With the economic degradation of the 1970's came more conflicts in northern Coius and more waves of migrants, both economic migrants and refugees, searching for stability, safety, and security. These were coming into Euclean countries in numbers far higher numbers than in the previous decades, and found themselves in communities pre-made with existing populations of people from relevant ethnic and racial groups, and thus created a lack of interest in integration with the rest of society. At the same time, as job losses mounted, the white working class now found themselves having to compete with a coloured working class that was willing and eager to work hard for lower wages. A working class that was more eager to tolerate terrible working conditions and long hours. A working class that had very little education and spoke little to no of the mother tongue in the countries they were now living in, which made them far easier to exploit. The end result was that the white working class was now being pushed out of the areas they had lived in for years, and began occupying mixed neighbourhoods on vast public housing estates, many of which were soon placed into the hands of companies or even individual landlords who had little to no regard for the conditions of the buildings they rented.

As job losses mounted in the 1980's, even the migrants were finding it tough to find jobs, and many remained unemployed, either living off government welfare, or resorting to the one option many did in times of desperation: crime. Crime rates spiked, with many in the white working class concerned for their own safety as public housing areas became no go areas for police. Gangs appeared to fill the void left by police who often struggled to maintain law and order. The urban white working class blamed the migrants for the crime rates caused by now endemic poverty in many major urban centres across eastern Euclea. Their old parties abandoned them, influenced by urban liberal elites and a preference for social democracy or Third Way economics. In places like Estmere, the governments that assumed the role of centrist reformers often adopted the same neoliberalism of previous governments, and further entrenched poverty in many economically deprived areas around the country. As the new century dawned, the populists in eastern Euclean politics began to exploit the frustrations, fears, and resentment of those in rural and urban communities gutted by neoliberal economic policies and kept repressed by economic inequalities. Parties like Estmere First, Front National, and the OVFP gained traction as more and more people in the white working class turned to reactionary parties and politicians that promised to restore the old societies that existed before. They bought into a lie peddled by these politicians that the old days were better, and that society would benefit from returning to them.

The success of the Tribune Movement in Etruria further emboldened the right-wing fringe, who in addition to gaining traction in mainstream eastern Euclean politics, also began to associate with violent activist groups of the far right. Neo-functionalists and reactionaries who were not afraid to utilise violence and intimidation in order to not only bring about their ideal conflict between whites and non-whites, but also achieve political aims. These groups, often utilising money supplied to them from sympathisers in Etruria and with political protection from politicians and figures within their respective countries. Even before the Great Recession, far right terrorism was a bourgeoning threat. In December 2003, an attempted assassination of then Azmaran Thingspeaker Eleina Helmutsdohter killed seven people and wounded seven others. In April 2007, a right wing terrorist attempted to assassinate Alslandic premier Jabik Neuwenhuis. After as series of Irfanic terrorist attacks, right-wing terrorists killed 81 people in Spagleann, Caldia, on August 13, 2016, in what could be considered the worst terrorist attack committed in Euclea by the far right. There was little shock or condemnation from the white working class who had seen the destitution of their communities and the criminality bought by migrants and saw the attacks as the comeupence for the politicians who had ignored and ridiculed them for decades.

"Buy Euclean" isn't going to change those attitudes. It's not going to rebuild the bridges that were burned between the white working class and the leftist parties who discarded the white working class vote because it would damage their new image of tolerance and acceptance of all cultures. What it is going to do is convince the more cynical of the white working class that this isn't about them or their communities, but about votes in a struggle between the remerging populist left and the rampant populist right. Because "buy Euclean" doesn't mean support local businesses, or indeed, any businesses outside of the Euclean Community. Because neither Mac Suibhne or Turzyna are going to tell any of the white working class that the Saint-Calais steel mill, one of Euclea's largest, is owned by a company with no less than four different corporations who have a controlling stake in the company that owns it. Among those included is the Shangean National Steel Corporation, Shangea's largest steel manufacturer, which owns a full quarter of the Société sidérurgique de Gaullice, the owner of Saint-Calais. Indeed, you will not find a single steel mill or steel company within the Euclean Community still completely owned by the government.

Despite this, the principal criticisms of the "Buy Euclean" initiative have not come from the white working class or the populists. Indeed, the Front National surprised many by enthusiastically supporting the initiative. The criticisms have come from the centre right and right wing, many of whom see this as a precursor to the return of protectionist policies. This concern is especially prevalent among the free trade neoliberals who have decried the initiative as "economic warfare on the third world". What they happily ignore is the guaranteed billion euclo contracts that will subsequently go straight into the pockets of the shareholders and the board executives of the steel companies and the owners of those companies, and virtually nothing will go down to the ordinary worker toiling away in the foundries themselves.

If the left thinks "Buy Euclean" is going to win them back the white working class vote and deflate the far right and the populists, they're in for a rude awakening.

Von Hösslin - "No plans" to dismiss Furler as Defence Minister
Premier dismisses talk of firing scandal-hit Defence Minister, calls Vogler GmbH affair "a distraction".

WESTBRÜCKEN, WERANIA - In defiance of an increasing number of voices calling for the resignation of Defence Minister Ulrich Furler surrounding an insider trading scandal premier Otto von Hösslin has today lashed out at critics stating he has "no plans" to dismiss Furler in the near future.

"Mr Furler has been an excellent defence minister and I see no reason that would warrant his dismissal. This Vogler affair is a distraction based on false information. The government has always been committed to the highest of standards in public life and we reject what are at this moment unsubstantiated allegations against a government minister."

In his statement von Hösslin seems to be repudiating recent comments made by the attorney general Volker Bottenbruch who supported the idea of the Bundestag opening an investigation into Furler due to the accusations against Furler raising "serious questions" regarding insider trading within the Weranian government in general.

The scandal surrounds allegations that the weapons manufacturer Vogler GmbH bribed members of the government to accept lucrative arms contracts totalling €5.7 billion in exchange for bribes as well as promoting the sale of Vogler weapons abroad notably in Tsabara with the government accused of putting pressure on the Tsabaran government to accept contracts from the company in return for arms sales.

The allegation comes from a leak from the Ministry of Defence which has spurred ministers to allege the issue is one of national security with Interior Minister Jörg Bullmann announcing yesterday that the government aimed to fast track legislation which would more harshly punish whistle-blowers as well as make leaks more difficult.

However the allegations have damaged the image of the government which came to power on a promise to end the cornyist practices associated with procurement schemes. The Democratic Alternative party, which has a stronger anti-corruption slant then the NKP, has in particular been split with DA backbencher Mathias Weiz joining opposition politicians calling for the resignation or dismissal of Furler. DA leader and Foreign Minister Käthe Schickdanze and Social Affairs Minister Simas Nekrošius have so far not commented on the allegations although Nekrošius is understood to be advocating behind closed doors for Furler's exit from office.

The scandal has also damaged the image of the NKP in the eyes of the public. Although the party remains the most popular by a wide margin it has in a recent poll slipped below 40% whilst von Hösslin's personal approval ratings have similarly declined to their lowest yet. However Furler remains a key supporter for von Hösslin in the government so it would be difficult to dismiss him without alienating von Hösslin's own support base.

Wrzesiński grants request to hold elections, comments on górale "bill"
Image
President Wrzesiński speaking at Sechia (file photo)

CITY OF ŻOBRODŻ - Today, Minister-President Adrian Rozak headed to Żobrodź Castle to request the dissolution of the National Assembly, which will mark the final time the Minister-President will request the dissolution of the National Assembly for an election. As per tradition, President Sylwester Wrzesiński accepted Adrian Rozak's request, scheduling the parliamentary elections to be held on 3 September, or on the same date as the presidential elections.

At the press conference announcing the beginning of the election campaign at the gardens of the Żobrodź Castle, President Sylwester Wrzesiński received a question about the "bill" by the górale legislature passing second reading to annex the illegally-occupied Południowy corridor, and how the Miersan government will be responding to that.

President Wrzesiński responded that "this decision by the górale is very reckless, it is provocative, and it is dangerous to peace. What the górale have done is to legitimise the occupation of more lands that have been Marolevic since there was such a thing as Marolevs, and we Miersans can never stand for that."

When pressed on whether that will mean Miersa will liberate lands occupied by the górale, President Wrzesiński said that "absolutely. And once these lands have been liberated, we are not going to spoil them like we did from when we gained our independence until they rebelled against us because we put our foot down, and told them no for once. We will show the mountain kozaks, that there will be consequences, and we will integrate them into the Miersan nation like what the Etrurians did to the Piraeans [under the Greater Solarian Republic] by any means possible. If they do not wish to face the consequences [of their actions], they should reject the bill to annex the Południowy corridor, and instead, completely and unconditionally withdraw from the corridor as soon as possible."

With these statements, it is clear that the Miersans are ready to liberate their lands occupied by the górale: after nearly thirty years, Miersans who were displaced by the górale are yearning to return to their homes. May the situation be resolved sooner or later in our favour.

Race for the presidential seat: who will gain the most from the recent political shuffles?
Break-up of Justice and Restoration opens field for left-wing candidates, leaving the citizens in Gapolania unsure of their future

2021 presidential elections witness five female candidates, shifting the direction of male-dominated political scene in Gapolania.

It's exactly a month before the general elections in Gapolania and we now have a full list of confirmed candidates. Thirteen names will now race for the presidential seat - and some say that the elections have never been more important. The general elections in Gapolania take place every 4 years and elect both the President and 155 members of the Senate. The current head of state, Mosè Maggiacomo, finishes his second term, while the ruling party alliance, Justice and Restoration (Giustizia e Restaurazione) has been governing continuously since 2011. Gapolania is a phenomenon on its continent, as most other Asterian nations are ruled by left-wing parties. However, some believe this might also happen now in Hibiscus Land.

A few months ago, the ruling coalition had the next elections in their pockets - however, after several scandals, including the Chistovodian battleship incident, Blue Hibiscus, a major political force and the main centrist party in the nation decided to part ways with the Justice and Restoration, citing Cerbone's inability to compromise and his radical tendencies. In June, Marcelo Segantù, leader of the Blue Hibiscus party announced creation of the Movement for Change coalition, together with several other parties, including Abbastanza!, Democratic Alliance and United Gapolania. The announcement created a new niche in the country's politics, where a broad basket of centrists and right-wing politicians were playing together. Movement for Change, however, challenged Justice and Restoration and crashed their certainty to win another round of elections. Marcelo Segantù was declared the coalition's presidential candidate on 16th June - a familiar face of a fresh new political front that will definitely attract many former GeR voters.

The ruling alliance acted surprisingly quick - and after an inside elections, Clemente Necci won against Augusto Pella by a narrow margin. Necci, only 37 year old, acts as a Minister of Transportation since 2016. Commonly known as Cerbone's pupil, Necci's performance in the government was highly effective. For Justice and Restoration, this is a chance to go for a different perspective - Necci can be the voice of younger generations, eager to be directed either to the right or to the left.

The Civic Union and the New Left both decided to send in women as their candidates. Some commentators believed that the opposition parties might join their forces and start in the elections together, however in the late June Michele Leonardo Sodera, the leader of the New Left announced that they did not reach an agreement and will go separate instead. Battista Bernardi will fly a red flag in the race - a former lawyer focused on supporting rape victims, Bernardi is known as a strong feminist and can make left-wing matter again. The coalition once again refused to invite more radical socialist parties into the group, a careful step given the people's opinion on many left-wing politicians after the San Bernardo crisis. Another strong woman, Elisa Perranazu, the Civic Union's candidate, stormed the polls in 2017, making the liberals the second force in Gapolania - never before have they been so numerous. However, as the momentum faded, the coalition found itself stuck with dwindling support in the major cities and no real way of gaining votes in the rural interior. For many, the liberals are still a reminiscence of the neo-colonialism under the military junta a few decades ago. Perranazu does have a plan though, as stated in her campaign interview - she's the most busy of the candidates, with over 40 places to visit in her schedule.

The four major candidates can expect a long and tiring battle in the upcoming month. They have to work hard not only for themselves but also for the parties they represent - in Gapolania, a charismatic leader can also attract a lot of votes to their coalition. While the candidates for the Senate start their race too, it's the presidential seat that will be in the spotlight for the next four weeks.

LEMOVICIAN GOVERNMENT CONDEMNS THREATS MADE BY LEADER OF THE WESTERN MIERSAN PROVINCES
Defence Minister Haran Uriarteamoŕortu vows to "defend Lemovician sovereignty and Lemovician people"

Hours after the bill to annex the Southern Corridor Security Zone passed second reading and moved on to third reading, the leader of the western provinces of Miersa, Sylwester Wrzesiński, threatened that in the event of the bill's passage, "we are not going to spoil them like we did from when we gained our independence until they rebelled against us because we put our foot down, and told them no for once," but rather, "integrate [the Lemovicians] into the Miersan nation like what the Etrurians did to the Piraeans [during the Solarian War] by any means possible."

In response, Lemovician Defence Minister Haran Uriarteamoŕortu told the Lemovician nation that "the Revolutionary Defence Forces will defend Lemovician sovereignty and Lemovician people from the threat of another genocide in Euclea; from the threat that the north will do to us what the Etrurians did to the Piraeans, or worse, what the Shangeans did to the Senrians."

"We have been present in Lemovicia since before the proto-Eucleo-Satrians, the ancestors of the Marolevs and most of the other groups in Euclea, arrived," Uriarteamoŕortu said. "The historic record shows that we have been inhabiting the Mendija mountains; the lowlands, since before there was such a thing as the Marolevs. Meanwhile, the western provinces of the Miersan nation, led by their despot, threatens that we, the Lemovician nation, be expelled from our ancestral lands or be assimilated into their nation."

"Thus, I speak on behalf of the entire State of Lemovicia when I say that we condemn these threats made by the leader of the western Miersan provinces," Uriarteamoŕortu said. "We do not want another war, we want to remain in peace, but if the western provinces are going to continue going down this road, if they are determined to destroy the Lemovician people, and the State of Lemovicia which protects the Lemovician people from oppression; from cultural genocide, and from reactionaries, we will fight back, even if, to quote an old proverb, we have no friends but the mountains, because it is a matter of life or death for us."

When asked by an MTIN reporter if he would vote against annexing the Southern Corridor Security Zone, Uriarteamoŕortu smiled and said "No. I will vote to annex the Security Zone, because it will guarantee the security of the Lemovician people, and because the military should not be policing civilians who are not Lemovician citizens. And I'm not going to let the threats by Wrzesiński or the western regime from changing my stance in any way."

Government moves to blanket censor East Miersan and Lemovician sites in first backlash against their violations of the Arciluco Agreement
The government suggests it is the first step in combatting the "separatist agenda" within its own borders.
July 22, 2021 - Samistopol, Soravia

Image
Interior Minister Marta Maksymenka announced the change to
reporters earlier this afternoon.
In Samistopol's first diplomatic retaliation against the Dyńsk prerogative, the government today announced it would begin to blacklist all domains hosted under the .mw (East Miersa) and .lv.mw (Lemovician region) domains, citing their collective violations of the Arciluco Agreement spurred by the annexation of lands that goes against the agreement's terms.

All domains registered under the two blacklisted TLDs will be rendered inaccessible in Soravia beginning on August 1. Some Miersans in Soravia have come out against the movement, saying that it hinders the ability to communicate with relatives in the east. Maksymenka remained adament to her "dedication" in combatting the "beasts of extremism and separatism, which has been allowed to fester in diasporic communities in Soravia through these internet websites."

Samistopol, which has consistently maintained its advocacy for a jointly-administered road between Lemovicia and East Miersa as part of the direct corridor outlined in the agreement, has officially condemned the move, which it says "endangers the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Miersans". Additionally, it added that "a blatant disregard for the complex ethnic makeup of the region" indicated that the two states "simply could not be acting in goodwill", and that "more forceful responses" would need to be considered.

On top of this, foreign minister Illarion Belovol condemned the "infantilism" of the Dyńsk government in attempting to relocate its administration to the eastern wing of Zobrodz, which has remained divided since 1936. "In the current diplomatic outlook", he said, "it can only be a move designed to inflame and aggravate". "The red states are like parasites; seeking to feed and devour on the fall of good nations and good people." Belovol reiterated that West Zobrodz would have Soravia's "unwavering support" in combatting the issue.

Schickdanze - "Werania will not tolerate terrorism" in light of ambassador assassination
Foreign minister calls assassination of ambassador Ludwig Schönfisch a "tragedy and despicable act" .

WESTBRÜCKEN, WERANIA - Foreign Minister Käthe Schickdanze today has called the killing the the ambassador to Zorasan Ludwig Schönfisch a "tragedy and despicable act" designed to end Werania's support for the Tsabaran government.

"This killing was an act of terrorism that seeks to drive a dagger into Werania's status as a free democracy and it's support for Tsabara to follow such a path. I am going to be clear - Werania will not tolerate terrorism. We will not be intimidated. We will not be bullied. This cowardly act will only strengthen our resolve."

The foreign minister confirmed that an emergency cabinet meeting had been called and that the Weranian government would be seeking to increase it's security for its diplomatic staff abroad.

Furthermore the foreign ministry has instructed Weranian citizens in Zorasan to either leave the country or remain in safe places in case of copy-cat murders taking place across the country.

"There is only one response to this crime - to step up the fight against terrorism. The only language the terrorists understand is firm and measured, but decisive in its resolve."

The ambassador in question, Ludwig Schönfisch, had been attending a cultural event at the Ali Sayyad Gharazi Opera House in Bandar-e Sattari celebrating the impact of Weranian operatic compositions in Zorasan when he was shot several times by a former police officer Abdullah al-Yazdi. The gunman shouted several anti-Weranian slogans before being shot by Zorasani security forces.

NKP parliamentarian Anton Raicevich has called for an "immediate investigation into how Zorasani security forces were not able to apprehend a former policeman and prevent him from killing one of our diplomatic staff. And more importantly, did this man work alone or did he have assistance? The Zorasani's have an interest in undermining what they call an imperialist presence in Coius. Something amiss is at play here."

The Zorasani government has declined to comment

PetroLav, the nation's state-owned oil company, announced the 15th in response to the release of the Coian Monitors article, that the Kipchu New Frontier refinery had been shut down as a precaution, since a leak was thought to have occurred in the refinery last monday and its opening was delayed. The statement was short, and vague but has become common practice for PetroLav. Whether the refinery will open again remains to be seen, as PetroLav has not stated why the refinery is still shut down, weeks after a fire on July 10th, silence is the common response from PetroLav to inquiries from both its government and local authorities.

The Oil industry in Lavana, and its development and history is a riveting story, worthy of deep analysis. Oil held little to no importance for much of history in Lavana, although records exist of minor oil deposits close to the surface around the Gezije Range, which served mainly as medicine, or to cover the underside of riverine vessels. With the advent of the industrial revolution, and the industrial applications of oil, interest in finding deposits increased. Gaullican explorer and oil entrepreneur Léo Fresnel discovered the first oil deposit on Lavana in 1899 in the Gezije Range which he called Gezija 1, at the time Fresnel had conducted similar explorations in Dezevau with some success and such discoveries allowed modern Dezevau to kick start their petrochemical industry much earlier. Further exploration throughout the rest of the colonial period under both Gaullica and Estmere found little in the way of oil deposits in the country, and the country was thought to be nearly devoid of the precious resources. With independence the Lavanan Republic found little interest in developing the resource, as it continued exporting the little crude oil it pumped to other nations.

The Lavanan Section of the Workers International successfully established the modern People’s Republic of Lavana in 1960 and ushered in Socialism for the young country. Saravan Khouph, the leader and Premier of Lavana, had lived in Dezevau and other socialist countries in exile since 1931. Saravan had been invited by the North Vinalian government in 1940 to tour the country and its northern neighbor Chistovodia, although Saravan had to make the trip until 1944 following the explosion of conflict in Vinalia. Saravan remarked positively on both Asterian nations which he saw as successfully industrializing and modernizing, the only such example in the Socialist world outside of Kirenia. At the time North Vinalia had begun developing its oil industry, following neglect from the previous Non-Socialist Chistovodian government, Saravan had been fascinated by Oil which he saw as essential for the continued existence of the Socialist world, and as a tool to catapult a nation into modernity. Upon gaining power, Saravan begun working. The Ministry of Energies Department of Oil, which later became PetroLav, began conducting exploration and exploitation of Oil resources and deposits in the country. Scientists from all over the Socialist world begun some of the most ambitious oil exploration projects in history, scientists ranging from Chistovodia to Irvadistan reached the country, Dezevau, and Irvadistan were quick to establish themselves as the main helpers of Lavana in their desires of becoming Oil producers, Irvadistan would aid Lavana with technology, and Dezevau had agreed to provide funding for an Oil Refinery, which materialized in 1971 as the Silalek Oil Refinery, after a year of construction. The only problem with such ambitions was that, Oil could not be found, Lavana was estimated to produce 7,000 oil barrels per day in 1955 at its production peak, a decade of exploration and exploitation later in 1970 it had only doubled that amount to 15 thousand barrels per day. The world's largest producer of Oil, Zorasan can produce that in 2 seconds.

Lavanan Oil was more expensive to pump out, more expensive to transport to the refinery, and more expensive to export. Lavana had insisted on constructing the Silalek Refinery to the south of the country after an oil deposit had been discovered there, and to create economic opportunity. A southern oil deposit was never discovered, and most of Lavanan oil which had been discovered in the Gezije Range had to be transported south to the refinery, or simply transported to Dezevau. The development of Oil in the country had been a great failure, with Saravan unable to accept the fact that Oil could not be created from thin air. Although Lavanas history with Oil was sought to have come to an end, developments in Dezevau quickly changed the panorama. Dezevau had discovered some oil in the Brown Sea, an opportunity Lavana was quick to launch after in 1973, once again the international community provided the manpower but not the resources as had previously been done. By 1975 Oil had been found, and in great quantities the oil deposits of the Lavanan Brown Sea were by far much more productive than those found in Dezevau and Lavana was in a position to establish its dream. Saravan had sought to establish plans for the largest Petrochemical complex on this side of the continent, and international onlookers looked in surprise as the Lavanan dream for Oil became true. Yet as soon as the dreams of vast offshore platforms appeared, it vanished. Lavanan reserves were large, yes but not as large as had been thought, and with the current price of oil, much would be too expensive to make a profit from. Lavanas oil industry outlasted its main supporter, as Saravan Khouph fell out of favor and instead of facing a prolonged leadership battle retired in 1978.

His successor Buachan Inthavongsa wasn't as much a supporter of Oil as Saravan had, but he did see the economic potential in exploiting the resource. Buachan created PetroLav in 1979, and made it possible for the company to operate on the margins they sought fit, Buachan finished plans for the new Petrochemical complex in Lavana in 1986, with a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day, much reduced from the planned 600,000 barrels per day. Lavanan oil production had by 1988 reached 80,000 barrels per day, increased in 2004 to 120,000, and finally reached 150,000 in 2013. Lavana constructed a new refinery in 2004 the Sureli National Refinery with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day, after again another expected oil boom in Lavana was expected only to find little in the way of oil.

PetroLav perhaps best glorifies the misguided and oddly ambitious nature of the Lavanan Oil dreams. When faced with adversity, PetroLav most of the times underestimates costs and damages, and overestimates earnings. An oil leak in Gezija 1 in 2009, went unreported and unacknowledged by PetroLav for months until the Ministry of Energy conducted their own investigation after oil was found on a nearby stream. PetroLav has gained notoriety for fighting with the Ministry of Energy, and other government institutions. After a leak went unreported in the Silalek Refinery for various months, Vice-Premier Loe Vatthana visited the refinery in 2011 only for the visit to be cancelled after PetroLav was seen attempting to fix a months long oil leak in a couple of days before his visit. PetroLav has constantly been under criticism from the Ministry of Justice for its bad work conditions, and constant environmental failures. PetroLav has been subject of Government reviews and bills in the Lavanan Congress which have sought from condemning PetroLav to legally dissolving it. Such inner government fighting is unheard of outside of Liberal Democracies, but such inner fighting between government institutions run by the same group of individuals within the same party as is the case of Lavana is absolutely unthinkable.

The Lavanan Section of the Workers International (LSWI) has never been a stable or coherent institution, Saravan Khouph the face of the movement, was for many years not even part of the organization, and inner fighting between Socialist groups was common even after the revolution. Such an unstable party resulted in Lavana holding a fairly distinct unofficial party system since independence which has only grown since the 1990s, although opposition does not exist in Lavana. Under the surface a complicated game of alliances and politics are played constantly, with opposing players and ideologies. Members of the LSWI can be split among two major groups, those who seek to return Lavana to its pre-reform days under the leadership of Khouph and Inthavongsa, and those who reject such notions. The Second Lavanan Revolution as it was termed by Keo Sitwat Premier of Lavana from 1992 to 2000, were a serious of reforms which sought to change the near universal control of the LSWI in Lavanan institutions and politics. Lavana which was considered authoritarian and generally unfree even by other Socialist countries, found itself in a new era of reform and openness, private property could be owned, foreign investment was opened, foreign companies could sell their products in Lavana, and a general openness in Lavana. Although the LSWI was reduced in power, it remained fiercely anti-reform, and the areas where it has been allowed to maintain influence it has taken the chance to exert it.

These two main groups have carved provinces, institutions, and in some cases government owned companies, PetroLav has fallen into the Pre-Reform group, and the ruling government of the Pro-Reform groups have been unable to root them out since 2004, when Premier Hatsadi Lor established PetroLav leadership under the direct approval of the LSWI. PetroLav operates as other institutions such as Provincial Governors, and Municipal leaders in support or opposition of the people elected bodies which tend to be more Pro-Reform. When a Pro-Reform government takes power, one can expect positions which are approved by the LSWI to support or oppose the government when it's convenient. Premier Laina Keomany herself has sought to close the rift between both sides, as she has taken the only independent power she holds that of naming the Supreme Court and her cabinet (which control the Ministries), to be split between members of her own Pro-Reform group and the opposition. Minister of Energy Liao Flena is a member of the Anti-Reform party, and she was placed there directly by Keomany. The decision to delay information on the Refinery closure and the apparent leak, is as much an act by PetroLav to avoid any blame, and the Central Government to ensure it does not anger the Anti-Reform group, which has been rumoured to enjoy certain benefits from owning PetroLav and offering their services to the institution. Laina holds various initiatives and goals she wants to accomplish, but requires the help from all of the LSWI to achieve them, challenging a popular institution on their ranks could mean war, although silencing PetroLav's various violations of Lavanan Law may be a costly endeavour for her among voters, who might prefer a harder stance in the future.

Transgender and Non-Binary Amendment Act Passes Second Reading

SHAREImageImageImageImage
Klara Levy (@KlaraLevy)
23 July (1:00pm)|PIETERSBURG

The Transgender and Non-Binary Amendment Act has passed its second reading in a close vote in the House of Assembly after a longer than expected public submissions process.

The bill had been subjected to a much more lengthy than usual public submissions and select committee process due to a number of political disputes and organisations willing to give submissions on the content of the bill, which would among other provisions, remove the ban on transgender people from serving in the armed forces and extend legal recognition of non-binary and third gender persons.

The bill passed by a margin of just four votes, with 201 votes in favour and 198 votes against. An additional six MA's abstained. Eleven MA's were not present for the vote. Many of the MA's were in the capital for the upcoming vote to ratify the so-called Keisi Deal, and among the MA's not present were the Chief Minister, Andrew Bohn and Finance Minister Nigel Hancock. Of the 399 sitting members, 182 were from the National People's Party and 182 from the Democratic Action Party, and 16 from the Citizen's Alliance. with all elected MA's from the Nuvanian Agrarian League and the Indigenous People's Party present.

Held as a conscience vote, the second reading of the proposed bill saw changes in the voting patterns of many of the MA's. Of the votes in favour, 176 came from the DAP, 14 came from the Citizen's Alliance, 10 from the NVP, and one from the Indigenous People's Party. During the first reading, four DAP MA's abstained from the vote. Voting records from the second reading showed no DAP MA's abstained, but six voted against the proposed bill. Two Citizen's Alliance MA's, Antonette Bazzoli, MA for Oakhurst, and Candida Lindsey, MA for Mascarenhas West, also voted against the proposed bill. There was no change in cross floor votes from the NVP. Of the votes against, 168 came from the NVP, 22 from the Nuvanian Agrarian League, six from the DAP, and two from the Citizen's Alliance. Outside of the MA's who crossed the floor, the NVP also saw a reduction in abstained votes, from 45 votes at the first reading to six. However, all MA's that abstained from the vote were from the NVP.

Deputy Chief Minister David Verryn, who authored the Transgender and Non-Binary Amendment Act, said that he was somewhat concerned that the vote margin had narrowed significantly, saying that in spite of the significant challenge presented by opponents of the bill, the House voted to be on the "right side of history".
"I am under no illusions that what we're doing is the right thing," he said. "The choices we're making are the right choices, the history we're making is the right history." Verryn said in a speech before the vote that while he respected the concerns of those who opposed the bill, he believed that their concerns did not outweigh the human rights of the LGBT community.
"Denying someone an identity is denying them a right. A right to an identity. A right to be themselves. A right to have the ability to live a life free of persecution, oppression, repression, and discrimination."

Diane Best, the DAP MA for Kelswood, an urban electorate encompassing parts of the eastern suburbs of Avington in central Rand, said that she rejected the moniker of a "rebel MA", stating that she cross the floor to vote against the Transgender and Non-Binary Amendment Act because she believed the submissions processed had not addressed the concerns that the submissions process did not adequately cover the issues raised by feminist and women's groups. She said that she felt as though the government wasn't willing to have a "mature discussion" about the concerns raised by these groups.
"I tried raising the issue with other MA's during the process that part of a democracy is that we all have an equal say," she said. "I do feel that these concerns have not been addressed and that we were stonewalled during the whole process." Best, a former chairperson of the women's rights group Women United, said that the bill would allow men the ability to identify as women, something that she opposed on the basis that it would undermine women's rights.
"Ultimately it's not a case of whether or not we can, it's whether or not we should."

Best was joined across the floor by five other DAP MA's, four of whom were women. The only male DAP MA to cross the floor, Jaime Waller, MA for Hattersley, agreed broadly with the concerns raised by his fellow MA's who crossed the floor, saying that not all the concerns had been given due attention in the submissions process.
"Ultimately it's a matter for the Senate to decide," he said. "But it is what it is."

Leader of the Opposition, Philip Ackermann, abstained from the vote for a second time, stating that the government had not met his concerns about the identity documents and what legal rights those would grant their owners. He said that the government was "less than cooperative" on the process in his discussions with the Deputy Chief Minister. Despite this, he said that he supported the bill in theory, but was unable to get a clear picture of the practical elements of the bill's provisions.
"It's not that the bill in of itself has anything inherently wrong with it," he said. "It's that the government has not told anyone what those caveats in the bill in terms of identity mean for everyday Nuvanians. I don't believe that the government has been very transparent with what the practical impacts of this bill actually are." Ackermann also said that he personally was not convinced by the issues raised by some of the in-person submissions from women's and feminist groups.
"I don't think it means that men are going to wander into women's restrooms and start causing trouble, that's ridiculous."

Neither of the Citizen's Alliance MA's were willing to comment on their choice to cross the floor, but a statement released by the office of Oakhurst MA Antonette Bazzoli, called the submission's process "deeply flawed" and believed the government was "stonewalling uncomfortable discussions".

With the passing of the second reading, the Transgender and Non-Binary Amendment Act will now pass to the Senate for it's third and final reading. If the bill passes, the bill will then be passed to the State President to be signed into law. If it fails, the bill will be passed back to the House of Assembly with a list of recommendations from the Senate on amendments and improvements to the bill.

Verryn said that he hopes to see the bill pass the Senate.
"It would be amazing to see that happen for everyone who has been denied a legal right for so long."

TELEWIZJA MIERSKA TO SUBMIT WEST MIERSAN ENTRY FOR 2022 EUCLOVISION
Telewizja Mierska denies the decision is connected with "recent tensions"

In a press release issued today, Telewizja Mierska has announced that the Miersan Sotirian Republic will be submitting its own entry for the 2022 Euclovision song contest in Piraea, with the statement reading that "after having considered the poor performance of the United Miersa entry at Lavelle, and having considered the struggles in selecting a joint entry in both the Kesselbourg and Lavelle editions, it will be in the best interests of the western and eastern voivodeships of the Miersan nation to submit their own entries for the 2022 Euclovision song contest in Piraea."

"This decision was not influenced by the recent tensions caused by the decision by the authorities of the eastern voivodeships to move their seat of government to the eastern neighbourhoods of Żobrodź, nor by the tensions arising by the separatist authorities occupying parts of the Małomiersa and Zanawiwasie deciding to annex the illegally-occupied Południowy corridor," the press release read. "It was instead done by mutual agreement by both Telewizja Mierska and the broadcaster responsible for the eastern voivodeships of the Miersan nation, as it is not in the best interests to submit a joint entry for the 2022 Euclovision song contest in Piraea."

The statement read that "while the two broadcasters will be submitting their own entries for the 2022 Euclovision song contest, we are not ruling out any future joint entries that will take place in future Euclovision song contests, and we hope to some day resume our cooperation."

However, an anonymous source from within Telewizja Mierska has told Codzienny that the decision to submit a separate entry for the 2022 Euclovision song contest was made "as a response to eastern provocations [in Małomiersa and to relocating the seat of government to the eastern neighbourhoods of Żobrodź], and that it was a "unilateral decision by Telewizja Mierska" made in response to the current "geopolitical situation."

ELECTION 2021 • Today, 20:14

Security and immigration become dominant talking points in an explosive start to the campaign

Image
REPORTING:
Nicolaas Geijs • Political correspondent for HNO News

Security concerns, terrorism and immigration have become the early prime talking points as the federal election campaign enters its first weekend.

It follows the assassination of Werania's ambassador to Zorasan, Ludwig Schönfisch, at a cultural exchange event in the city of Badar-e Sattari yesterday. Zorasani state media claim the suspected assailant was a former police offer with grievances over "Weranic imperialism", though Werania's foreign minister Käthe Schickdanze has characterised the attack as an attempt to end the country's support for the Tsabaran government in its ongoing civil war. Numerous Euclean leaders have called for an independent investigation into the murder.

In a chirp late last night, Premier Rupert van Bleiswijk (SAP) condemned the murder, which he described as "horrific". At a press conference earlier this morning, NVP leader Fabian van Aitzema criticized the Premier for not initially calling for an independent investigation as other Euclean governments have done. "When given the opportunity to stand up and be the first to call for justice, Premier van Bleiswijk cowardly chose to be a bystander and wait for other governments to do so first," he said.

The Premier hit back at the allegations at a campaign stop in rural Flamia, where the SAP campaign visited a vehicle manufacturing plant this morning. "I am not a reactionary leader, unlike Mr. van Aitzema," he told reporters. "We lead a government that is committed to both peace and justice in our world. The latter of which, the family of Mr Schönfish and his country deserve nothing less of."

There was also widespread criticism of Pieter Veer, the leader of the new Heart of Hennehouwe party. He claimed the murder was a "sad reminder of the barbarity of radical Irfanic terrorism", and blamed the SAP for wanting to "import" terrorists into the country. Deputy Premier Eva Kaestel, leader of the VDP, said his comments were "racist and an attempt to inflame hatred and division", and that he ought to withdraw the remarks. Veer was also lambasted for his perceived insensitivity, appearing to celebrate his verification on Chirper in the same tweet as his comments on Schönfisch's murder.

Nevertheless, the incident in Zorasan has brought to the forefront of the campaign a focus on domestic security and immigration. The far-right Patriot's March, who could attribute its best-ever showing in the previous federal election to immigration concerns, called for increased funding and powers to apprehend and punish those suspected of plotting terror attacks. The party also renewed its call for a moratorium on immigration from northern Coius.

Elsewhere in the campaign, the Greens unveiled their first major policy platform of the election, calling for a "just transition" towards a net-zero economy by 2040. The Sotirian right-wing VSD focused its third day of campaigning on the topic of crime, pledging to increase Hennehouwe's police force by at least 10% over the next parliamentary period. Elise Dumont Aguas, the new leader of the beleaguered LIVE party, rejected claims that her party was heading towards electoral oblivion after infighting led to the resignation of her predecessor, Sam Tarokh, reducing the caucus to just two deputies.

Multiple parties implicated in attempt to ban Patron League from ballot in specific districts
Today Premier Cerqueira and other LP leaders are outraged after they claim to have recieved information regarding an attempt between judicial leaders, independent election commission, and multiple rival parties to ban the LP from the ballot in important districts.

The Trovão High Court of Justice

Trovão, Luzela: Pro-Patron protests have begun outside the Trovão High Court of Justice and in Precea today. This comes after LP leaders made an announcement today saying that they were given information by an anonymous source stating that the courts and election commission, concerned with the survival of the UC and other parties, was willing to find a way to ban the LP from the election in the 25 districts overseen by the Trovão High Court and election commission, which are mostly in control of the UC, CpL, and SD as of right now, but are currently are polling in favor of the LP. These districts are mostly located around Trovão in northeast Luzela. According to the leak the plan was called off recently, with the source saying they have come as being close the the Trovão government and learned about it days ago

Premier Cerqueira has asked the Court of Auditors to investigate what she says is "attempted collusion between the courts, so-called independent election commissions, and the old parties to destroy our movement". LP General Secretariat Selena Caprichoso stated today at a rally in Chorto "They know we are going take these districts in the snap election, we are polling in great numbers there. They're scared of us, our movement and a possible victory for Paretian democracy!"

UC leader Nobreza says he was unnaware of anything that the LP is implicating, He has begun to meet with party leaders in order to "punish any party members willing to cheat victory, even if it benefits us". The leaders of the CpL and SD also claim that they were unnaware of the scandal.

According to the source, the courts and election commission were working together in attempting to fasten a way to ban the LP from the ballot, the source says they believe that they were looking into ways to implicate the LP in promoting violence as a motive to ban the party. Most of the members of the court were appointed by UC or SD lawmakers, even furthering the controversy with the older parties.

Pro-Patron League protests have been continuing in Trovão, where over 1,000 supporters began to crowd around the Trovão High Court and the Trovão Election Commission Office. In Precea similar protests began outside of the Election Committee office. Many believe this will only lead to an increase in support for the LP in the end, and fuel a massive distrust in the government, continuing the growth of populism in the country.

This comes days after the LP has begun to lead in most polls ahead of the SD, this will undoubtedly give the populist right more ammo to use in their message of “us vs them” for the August 4th elections.

Former Chief Minister Robert Marten Arrested On Bribery, Money Laundering Charges

Former Chief Minister Robert Marten has been arrested (file).

Former Chief Minister Robert Marten has been arrested by heavily armed police acting on a warrant obtained from the courts by the Financial Crimes Office on charges of bribery and money laundering.

The dramatic arrest was played out this afternoon at Marten's Governor's Valley residence in the southern Westrand region about 40 kilometres southwest of Pietersburg, as Marten is known as a prolific collector and owner of firearms. Police spokesperson Ferdie Van Houte said that precautions were taken in the knowledge of Marten's extensive firearms collection and that it was standard practice for entering the property of someone who is known to be in possession of firearms.
"These precautions ensure both the safety of the offender that we are conducting an arrest on and the safety of our officers," he said. "This is part of the prodecures that we have for dealing with potentially volatile situations."

Van Houte said that Marten was cooperating with authorities regarding his arrest, and was being held at the central police station in Pietersburg, which had high security holding cells for high value or other significant persons held on remand. He would not comment on the reasons for such high security precautions.

FCO spokesperson David Blythe said that the agency had been tipped off about the dealings of Marten in the aftermath of his failed challenge against his vote of no confidence within the House of Assembly in April last year. He said that the information handed over to the agency included a number of emails sent between Marten's office and several individuals within the construction industry. Blythe refused to comment on what companies and individuals were the subject of the investigation, which Blythe said was about to conclude.
"So far we have one of our primary persons of interest in custody," he said. "We're looking to make further arrests within the next 24 hours."

Blythe said that the charges of bribery and money laundering were related to events dating from before and after the 2013 general election, in which Marten is allegedly involved with significant transfers of money during the election campaign as leader of the National People's Party. Blythe said that the money was disguised in a manner as to not attract attention, and was believed to be used as a way of facilitating future political favours from Marten's government.
"This is the reason why we have bought forwards these charges against Mister Martin," Blythe said. "These represent the kinds of nepotism that the Financial Crimes Office seeks to stamp out."

Marten took to social media during the raid on his residence that lead to his arrest in which he defended himself against the charges brought against him. In a series of chirps, Marten accused the police and the FCO of engaging in a conspiracy against him, and said that the charges were bogus. Marten also appeared to make chirps even after his arrest, although it is unknown if anyone other than himself has access to his Chirper account.

Marten's lawyer, Heino Tjaart, said that Marten would be fighting the charges against him in court. He said that the charges against Marten were clearly "the result of unresolved political rivalries" and he said would be revealed by the trial.
"I believe that there are issues which are out of the public eye that are behind this, absolutely," he said. "This trial will bring those issues into the public eye."

Leader of the opposition Philip Ackerman said that he was unaware of any charges being brought forwards against Marten, who remained a sitting member of the House of Assembly after his removal from office and last year's general election. He said that the charges were a surprise and he denied that the NVP had conducted any form of bribery or money laundering.
"No, the party hasn't committed any crimes of the sort," he said. "I find it ridiculous that anyone would accuse the party of doing so." Ackerman said that he was "uninvolved" with the Marten campaign during the 2013 general election and that whatever happened was ultimately nothing to do with him.
"It would be very unlikely for me to be involved with anything like that given I was running for a second term at that stage. It'd definitely be something I wouldn't even think of doing."

Ackerman had not ruled out a by-election in Marten's seat of Mascarenhas East, an electorate in western Kanaän that incorporates parts of the westernmost suburbs of Pietersburg plus a number of satellite towns along the eastern part of the Mascanrenhas Peninsula, including Governor's Valley and Fort Willem. Ackerman said that any election would be dependent on the outcome of the trial, as the NVP did not want to risk losing a seat, despite Mascarenhas East being somewhat conservative-leaning, having voted to retain Marten in 2020. Marten has been MA for Mascarenhas East since 2001.

Marten is expected to appear before the Pietersburg District Court on July 29.

National Assembly voting in favour of the bill (Chirper)

Today, the bill to amend the Lemovician constitution to make the Southern Corridor Security Zone into the eighth province of Lemovicia, with the name of Ekialdebeŕija Province, has passed third reading in the National Assembly. The bill passed, with ninety-three legislators voting in favour, thirteen legislators voting against, and four legislators who were absent.

Of the thirteen who voted against the amendment, twelve of the thirteen were ethnic Miersans. Only one Miersan legislator, Mariola Wieczorek, voted in favour of the amendment, while Henrike Liciaga was the only non-Miersan to vote against the amendment.

Legislator Török Kristóf from the Corridor Security Zone celebrated its passage, saying in an interview outside the National Assembly building that "today we have made a historic step, of ending military occupation over the Corridor, of ensuring that Lemovicians residing in Ekialdebeŕija are just as equal as those living in Bidegurucean or Egunsentian, whether they are Lemovician citizens or not. Now, we are all equal in the Lemovician nation!"

However, Lucjan Skrzypczak, legislator from Zelaja Province, said that "while I am relieved that the Miersan Federative Council Republic will support us in event of war, the fact is that we have needless provoked the west [Miersan regime]. I am still concerned that this sends a message that we will expand not just beyond the borders in which we declared our independence from, but into our neighbours who have sizable Lemovician minority populations."

Secretary of the Corridor Security Zone Peruco Martiscorena in contrast has expressed his support for the bill's passage, saying that "with the settlement of Lemovicians displaced from the western provinces of our land into the Corridor, it is essential that they be treated as full equals in the Lemovician legal system, whether or not they are citizens or not. I am looking forward to becoming Secretary of the Province of Ekialdebeŕija, and to representing all people in the province."

Per constitutional procedure, the amendment must be approved by a simple majority of all provinces under the control of the State of Lemovicia, before the Presidency makes the final decision as to whether or not the second amendment will pass. Based on preliminary statements from officials in Egunsentian, Lautada, and Zelaja, it is likely that it will pass through this stage.

Final election debate held on RMP
UC, SD, and CpL attempt to defend their parties after news of Trovão scandal, Premier Cerqueira and SPIT's Andrade spar over support for Tsabara, other foreign policy issues.

The far left and far right battle at final debate, Andrade (left) and Cerqueira (right) hurled insults at the heated debate

Mausoleu, Tosutonia: Tonight the final debate in the 2021 snap election was held at Sant Bernabè University in Mausoleu, Tosutonia and broadcasted here on RMP. It was moderated by Tosutonia Today host Carles Enric Rabell. The debate is comes a little over a week before the election will be held, on August 4th. Leaders of the LP, SD, UC, CpL, Alt, Greens, SPIT, LdP and other regionalist parties were present at the debate.

The debate was dominated by two topics, the first being the recent scandal involving the Trovão election commissions and court in an attempt to ban the Patron League from the ballot. The second was foreign policy, mainly on issues such as the EC's Buy Euclean initiative, Tsabara, the tensions in Miersa, and the assassination of Weranian Ambassador Schönfisch.

The first question in the debate was about the leaders' opinions on the recent events in Trovão, in which many parties have been implicated in working with the High Court of Trovão in an attempt to ban the LP from the ballot in the election, some of the parties named by the still anonymous source include the UC, SD, and CpL.

Cerqueira said that they plan on "dealing with the corrupt Trovão court and election commissions accordingly, such an attempt to undermine Euclean democracy will be met with stern punishment by our Ministry of Justice" and that "we will move to clean the entire house of corrupt elitist officials". SD leader Falcão's answer to the question was that she will "expel all party members involved" and that her government will "have an honest approach and make sure to vet our nation's elections and courts are checked and fixed". Other party leaders made similar comments about the scandal.

Cerqueira asked UC leader Nobreza if he had any suspicions of party members working with Trovão's courts to ban the LP, he responded denying any knowledge and that he was "completely devoid of any suspicions" about Trovão. He said that the news a "complete surprise" and was shocked to hear of it, and again stated plans to deal with any party members who knew and were complicit.

The next question was on the Buy Euclean Initiative which has gained support in multiple EC nations. It has received praise from both the populist right and social democrats in various nations, including Paretia. This issue saw the LdP and other moderate parties alone against the more popular LP and SD.

SD leader Falcão responded first announcing "complete support for the Buy Euclean initiative, and it will be our first priority to vote on after the elections are finished, we believe it will pass both houses with ease". Cerqueira made a similar statement saying that the first thing after the elections will be to push the Buy Euclean initiative through the Assembleia Nacional, she stated that Shangean and other Coian steel is "dangerous to both our economy and to our infrastructure". LdP leader Barboza says she believes that "economic warfare will hurt maintaining any possible peaceful relationship with Coius". Cerqueira then immediately responded saying that some major Coian powers "don't want or seek a peaceful relationship with Euclea, now do they?".

The next question was on support for Tsabara, which has been dealing with civil war against Pro-Zorasan rebels for over a year. Cerqueira recently met with Tsabaran President Al'Qutayni and made a deal with them by giving them more naval equipment and humanitarian aide.

SPIT leader Andrade responded by stated that the war in Tsabaran is an "imperialist move by Euclean powers to push their interests onto the people of Tsabara, who clearly are not satisfied with their government" and wants Paretia to withdraw all support to the Tsabaran government outside of humanitarian aide to the region. Cerqueira then called Andrade an "anti-democratic fool" who "supports the interests of the terroristic governments of Zorasan and various communist nations before the freedoms of the people of Tsabara". Andrade then said "The government of Tsabara are war criminals, we need to put our nation's interests first, this war is not ours to interpret", Cerqueira then said "Zorasan is the one where Ambassadors are being murdered". The two continued to go back and forth for over a minute. Other party leaders responded to the question showing support for the government of Tsabara.

The final question of the debate was the leaders' opinions on the recent events involving Lemovicia and the Sotirian Republic of Miersa. In which Lemovicia began to to approve making the Southern Corridor a province of the country, which many see as a violation of the Arciluco Agreement.

UC leader answered first by stated that his party wants a deal to be made in order to prevent any conflict in central Euclea. He says that the region "must understand that the Arciluco Agreement was meant for peace, destroying it puts them directly into the path against peace." Premier Cerqueira stated that she is in "agreement with the Sotirian Republic against Lemovicia but wishes that the situation doesn't deteriorate". Andrade was the only one in the debate in support of Lemovicia, stating that it is what the corridor is "rightfully land of the Lemovician people", but wishes for a "peaceful agreement".

After the debate RMP conducted a poll on the debate, the polls shows the Patron League leading ahead of the Social Democrats by around 3 points, and the Alt Party and SPIT beginning to see a downward trend in support. And a continuing fall of all other parties in the election.

OPINION: THE REAL PROBLEM WITH MAŁOMIERSA
Land rights have ultimately contributed to the rise in tensions between Miersa and Lemovicia
SHAREImage Image Image Image
JOSEFA WIŚNIOWSKI (@JosefaWish)
28 July, 2021 04:14 CET | SECHIA, MAŁOMIERSA

Image
View of the front line separating the two Małomiersas (file photo)

As the Miersan Sotirian Republic and the Lemovicians prepare for what might be the first major war since the end of the Lemovician War, I dread what is to come. I was born to Lemovician parents who in the Miersan War, chose to stay in Małomiersa. They have lost touch with their friends, who either viewed my parents as "traitors to the cause" or who either fled to areas under Lemovician control to escape the horrors of war, or were else expelled by ethnic Miersan militias.

In this same war, Miersans who were expelled from their lands in the Lemovician-occupied territories came onto our land. With them came settlers recruited from Radushia to repopulate what the Miersan government calls "empty lands" owned by "absentee landowners." On the other side, the Lemovician authorities have done the same thing: bringing those displaced from their lands in Małomiersa and moving them to lands who were previously owned by Miersans.

When I was growing up, our neighbours were Miersans who came from the powiat of Zelaja. Their most prized possession was a key, which they said was the key to their farm in Zelaja, and that they took this key in 1984 when they fled from the advancing Lemovician forces. They expressed the hope, the desire that one day, they would return to their land.

This has some substantial parallels to Lemovicians living in what they call the "State of Lemovicia." According to their state broadcaster, and their newspaper, many families in Goikoecija Beŕija have keys to their homes in what they call Goikoecija, and what Miersans call Hoikoćija, which was the nearest town to me when I was growing up. Similar stories echo across many new towns and neighbourhoods across Lemovicia.

These similarities get at the heart of the problem: when the Arciluco Agreement was made between the Miersan government and the Lemovician authorities, it froze the conflict without resolving the outstanding issues, such as land rights. And this has meant that both Miersans and Lemovicians, forced from their lands in Małomiersa, and sent to the other side, have title to lands that they own in theory, but in practice cannot get to.

Thus, while the Lemovician authorities used what they call "alienated land" to build cities like Goikoecija Beŕija to house Lemovician refugees, or as state farms to help feed the fledgling statelet, the Miersan government has invited Radushians and Miersans to settle Lemovician land on the basis that they have become "absentee landowners" who would not pay their fair share to the Miersan treasury.

And as it has been nearly three decades since the Lemovician War has been put on pause, and as those who have fled their lands grow older and greyer, should it really be a surprise that there is this push for war? This push to retake some land and ensure that people get back to their lands before they die of old age, having been displaced from the lands that they and their ancestors grew up in?

I think not. While there is some faint hope that both sides will come to an amicable solution, as those who moved to their new homes start new generations, who are in turn starting their own families, it becomes less and less likely that this conflict will ever be peacefully resolved, because for better or for worse, both parties now have an equally valid claim to the land.

Codzienny shut down by Ministry of Justice
Image
Justice Minister Szymon Krynicki speaking (file photo)

CITY OF ŻOBRODŻ - Today, Justice Minister Szymon Krynicki announced that "due to repeated and flagrant violations of Miersan laws concerning false information, libel, and national security, the Ministry of Justice has directed that Codzienny cease operations with immediate effect."

Krynicki told reporters that "since 2016, Codzienny has committed numerous violations of Miersan laws concerning the proliferation of false information, libelous statements, and publishing stories which endanger the national security of the Miersan nation. We have tried to work with Codzienny management as we value a free and fair press, but the recent opinion piece by Aranoak sympathiser Josefa Wiśniowski, which has numerous falsehoods, is libelous against the Miersan nation, and endangers Miersan security, in conjunction with Codzienny's past record means that we can no longer permit it to operate in the Miersan Sotirian Republic."

"Thus, with immediate effect, the Ministry of Justice has ordered all Codzienny 'news bureaus' to be shut down, all Codzienny printing presses to cease production, and for all Miersan server providers to remove Codzienny's website from their domain," Krynicki declared. "In addition, we have issued an arrest warrant to Codzienny's board of directors, on the charges of publishing fake news, libelling numerous government officials and agencies, publishing stories which endanger the national security of Miersa, and espionage for the eastern voivodeships."

"We are not against free press, far from it," Krynicki said. "But what we are against are news that endangers national security, news that insults the Miersan nation, and news that is not even worthy of the name [of news]. And Codzienny has proven itself time and time again that it is abusing their privilege."

In Krada, Codzienny board of directors were arrested, while the locks to their headquarters in Krada were changed and locked, with a notice informing employees of the decision by the Miersan government to shut down Codzienny. In Sechia, Josefa Wiśniowski was arrested at his home, and charged with espionage for Lemovicia and with aiding terrorists.

More as the story develops.

SENIOR FIGURES IN LIBERTY INDICATE SUPPORT FOR CHANGE IN PARTY LEADERSHIP

Image
Áine Nic Gille, one of the top-ranking members of the Tionól, has hinted Liberty needs a new leader.

By RÓNÁN Ó DUBHGHAILL

28 July 2021 at 17:26 p.m. EST

The Liberty Party's embattled leader, Pádraig Mac Piarais, could seen be faced with serious threats to his leadership as one of the party's senior-most members hints she supports a change in leadership. In an interview this morning, Áine Nic Gille indicated she believes Liberty would benefit from a "fresh face".

The party has been dealt a series of defeats since the 2019 snap election, racking up historical losses one after another. Pressure has been mounting against Mac Piarais, the party's far-right leader, since Liberty performed poorly in June's provincial elections. Critics of the controversial leader' have called on him to step aside and allow the party to rebuild without him.

Nic Gille, who serves as the Second Leas-Cheann Comhairle (second deputy speaker) of the Tionól, is the most prominent member of the party to indicate support for new leadership.

"These past few years have been hard for us. We reflect on this and make changes that allow us to win back the trust of the electorate" she said in an interview on TRN Nuacht. When pressed by the program's host, Nic Gille said that she was "of the opinion that the party would do better under a fresh face".

She denied that she herself was interested in the party, but continued to express concerns about the direction of her party.

Nic Gille is the senior-most figure in the party to apply pressure to Mac Piarais. Most of his critics are back-benchers or former officials aligned with ex-taoiseachs Walker and O'Reilly.

Mac Piarais is the fifth leader of the Liberty Party since 2017, when Alexis Walker stood down. The party has struggled to find a new leader to provide direction since Jimmy O'Reilly resigned in the aftermath of his scandals.

Official party sources declined to comment on Nic Gille's interview. However, sources close to Mac Piarais indicate he is upset with her public dissent. He has frequently blamed his detractors for Liberty's poor showing, arguing that infighting has undermined his leadership.

Under Mac Piarais, Liberty has shifted significantly to the right on many economic and social issues in order to win back support from voters who went to the National Party. His efforts have seen little success, with Liberty just barely leading the National Party in most national polls.

Nadir Mousavi giving an interview in 2020

NEWS| Gulbistani Anti-Government leader arrested
Gulbistani Irfanist and Anti-Sherzai activist arrested in Buzday by government agents and local Police
2021-07-29T 9:58:10Z
Buzday, Gulbistan- The Coian Monitor reports that the Gulbistani Irfanic Union member and anti-government activist Nadir Mousavi was arrested this evening outside of his home in the city of Buzday. Initial reports conclude that Mousavi was leaving his house when Local and Federal Police as well as NSP Agents promptly arrested Mousavi. Buzday police chief Rashid Jailili held a press conference at around 1:00pm this evening stating that "Mousavi is currently under arrest for charges of sedition and sending anti-government threats. Mousavi is currently being transported to a location that I also can not disclose due to the nature of this arrest and the possibility of that location being targeted by radical supporters of his."

Mousavi has been a long standing opponent to the current Sherzai leadership of Gulbistan, having been politically active since 2018. Mousavi has recently made headlines across Gulbistan after he and other Irfanist and tribal rights activists burned fake paper statues of President Sherzai and his cabinet members while chanting slogans such as "The Puppet Will Fall" and "Irfan will win". These events in June caused quite a controversy across the country. The charges he recieved are currently believed to be related to these actions, although Chief Jailili has stated this arrest has nothing to do with the paper statue burning. When asked about the involvement of National Security Protocol Agents, Chief Jalili stated that "the NSP Agents were only there because they already were investigating Mousavi for his crimes" but went no further into discussing the NSP.

Only a few hours after this arrest, Irfanist supporters of Mousavi began a firestorm of Gulbistani social media calling the arrest "unlawful" and "tyrannical", with support by many other Irfanic leaders worldwide showing their support for Mousavi. According to social media, a protest is planned in Buzday tomorrow by Irfanist supporters of Mousavi and Irfanic Union members. Gulbistani Irfanic Union party leader Faisal Tabrikwal has recently posted his displeasure with the arrest along with many other GIU and even TIC elected officials. So far the government official has not released any statement beyond the Buzday Police. Prominent fellow GIU member Babrak Ramay recently posted on his social media claiming that the incident shows "Sherzai and his crony's lust for power". However, not everybody in Gulbistan sees it that way. Jaghund mayor Kashmala Qalat praised the Buzday Police's actions and stated that the arrest will help stop "actions that would have been inspired by Mousavi".

It is unknown when we will see Mousavi again as police have not stated his current location for security purposes, but it is likely a that a trial for the sedition charges will start soon. The Coian Monitor plans on bringing updates on the case and the reactions as new information surfaces.

Former Chief Minister Pleads Not Guilty To Bribery, Money Laundering Charges

SHAREImageImageImageImage
Alison van Molynecke (@AVMolynecke)
29 July (4:30pm)|PIETERSBURG

Former Chief Minister Robert Marten has plead not guilty to charges of bribery and money laundering in his first appearance inside the District Court in central Pietersburg today.

Marten is facing fifteen charges of bribery and the same number of charges of money laundering of a total sum of NS250 million (€17.8 million), with these crimes allegedly committed during the election campaign in the lead up to, and after, the 2013 general election, details which were made known in court today.

State prosecutor Garrick Spooner laid out the premise for the case against the former Chief Minister brought forwards by the government, with Spooner stating that the Chief Minister engaged in "substantial misconduct not befitting of an office of such power and prestige."
"What has occurred under the auspices of the defendant has forever tarnished the office of Chief Minister," he said. "It is an act that calls into disrepute the very office that many in this country aspire to, and one that we put significant faith and trust in." Spooner said that the former Chieft Minister knowingly received payments totalling NS250 million (€17.8 million) from former VDC Incorporated executives Carl Opperman and Dirk Pansegrouw in return for more than NS500 billion (€3.57 billion) in contracts from the government between January 2014 and June 2016. These contracts were mostly for government-sanctioned residential construction, of which at least NS165 million (€11.7 million) was made available for the executive board of VDC Incorporated as a "bonus". The money was then split between the board members and stashed away in foreign bank accounts. It is then alleged the money paid off to the VDC Incorporated executives was reinvested through these accounts into residential properties around Nuvania and the West Arucian region, where VDC Incorporated operated. From there, these investments were used to increased sales prices for various residential and commercial construction projects, before these investments were sold off for tax-free capital gains in many jurisdictions.
"The result is an intricate network of offshore bank accounts and shell companies that were able to be funded with taxpayer money through the defendant," Spooner said. "The role that the defendant has played is one in which that he was able to be elected and faciltiate this kind of corruption and illicit financial activities."

In addition, Spooner said that Marten received this money through donations to an overseas slush fund which could then issue donations through legitimate channels, especially private funds established by individuals. Spooner said that this was a tried and tested method used in the past for wealthy individuals and corporations to influence politicians and the democratic process.
"It should come as no surprised to anyone that the use of slush funds to hide donations or other financial transactions has become prevalent, even endemic, within our political system," he said. "As such, we should not be surprised that the use of one or more slush funds made possible these payments to the defendant so that he himself, or his political campaign, could benefit from their existence."

Defence lawyer Heino Tjaart said that the charges brought against Marten were "complete fabrications" and came from Marten's political enemies.
"There are those even within his own party who are threatened by his very presence and feel as though he needs to be removed," he said. "What better way to do that then fabricate charges of corruption? After all, it's something the public could believe. It's something that undoubtedly much of the public will believe. But it's all fake. It's politics. Nothing more, nothing less."

In a signed affadavit presented to the court, Marten had acknowledged that there had been donations to the National People's Party during the 2013 general election campaign and that they had been declared by the party under electoral law, which requires all donations above NS252,000 (€18,000) to be declared to the National Election Authority, and that no other donations were made. Furthermore, these donations had come from the executives themselves as well as a single donation from VDC Incorporated. Marten also said he did not receive any personal gifts of money nor did any of his trusts. Included within the affadavit were financial statements that are believed to demonstrate the lack of any received payments from the executives of VDC Incorporated or the company itself. He also said that there was "no evidence" of any kind of the existence of secret trusts or private slush funds that provided funding for Marten's 2013 campaign.

Tjaart argued that Marten was not a flight risk and therefore bail should be granted until the beginning of his trial. He said that placing him in remand would "place him under undue risk" from other prisoners if he was to remain incarcerated until his trial. Chief Justice Inka Elwin agreed but said that in this particular instance bail was not appropriate and confined him to house arrest until the date of his trial. Tjaart argued that because Marten was a sitting Member of Parliament that he be allowed to attend sittings, but this was refused by Chief Justice Elwin, who set his trial for the third week of August.
"I do not believe that anyone facing a trial of this magnitude should be continued to be directly involved in the political process."

Whether or not Marten will be allowed to remain as a Member of the House of Assembly is unclear, as members of both the House of Assembly and the Senate are entitled to three weeks of paid leave, after which any extended absences would be unpaid. In addition, Marten could also be forced to resign his seat under orders from the Office of the Speaker. Political analyst Samuel Hofmeyr said that while he was technically not required to resign until after the trial had concluded, he said that it would put Marten and the NVP in a difficult situation.
"He and the NVP have two options," he said. "The first one is that he resigns now and focuses on the trial, but that leaves him outside of Parliament potentially permanently. The second one is that he risks being pushed out with the potential for being found innocent. In any case, neither looks particularly good for the NVP from a public standpoint, but politically a by-election in Mascarenhas East would not be bad for the party."

The defence and prosecution have three weeks to prepare their cases.
