Olympics Thread (Doping Scandal!?)

Postby Forsher » Fri Jul 23, 2021 5:01 am

https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/58072039

Australian athletes damaged beds in their Olympic village hotel rooms and put a hole in a wall before leaving, the country's Olympic committee says.

Some athletes also showed "unacceptable behaviour" on their flight home, officials added.

But Australia team boss Ian Chesterman said no disciplinary action would be taken as the athletes had apologised.

He added that the damage was "minor" and that it was "not the hardest thing to break the cardboard bed".

On the bright side, nothing more seems to have come of the other major story about Australia at the Tokyo Games:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/58008218

Members of the Australian athletics team are isolating at the Tokyo Olympics after close contact with American pole vaulter Sam Kendricks, who has tested positive for Covid-19.

Kendricks, the reigning world champion, has been ruled out of the Games.

The Australian Olympic Committee said in a statement that athletes are isolating in their rooms as a "precautionary measure" and are undergoing testing procedures.

Surely, the American Athletics team are also close contacts of Kendricks???? Obviously, it's preferable that they're not but the mix of nationalities is odd.

Um... I was expecting one of these to exist. The Opening Ceremony is happening right now. This second. But not for me. I have ads. Apparently Ukraine were wearing shorts!

Also, they definitely should've given the dual flag bearers two flags, i.e. one each.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/live/olympics/50973969

In other news, there have been several competitive results in softball, rowing and soccer. Wikipedia's probably the best way of seeing the details.

Ah, the coverage is now delayed because here's Ukraine. Perhaps I haven't missed anything after all... Ukraine's shorts are... everyone seems sunburnt. Maybe the TV isn't coloured right.

Also, Brisbane are going to host the 2032 Olympics.

The opening ceremony was... I liked the fireworks, otherwise you might call it artsy.

EDIT: Winter Olympics don't count. Be gone with your heresies!

And South Korean television apparently thought an aerial shot of the Chernobyl power plant was a good symbol of Ukraine.

Having been raised in a half-Korean household, I can safely say that South Korean TV is a lot more wild than people give it credit for.

As for the Olympics themselves, I find myself almost reluctant to watch the opening ceremony to begin with, which is definitely a first for me.

I watch the Olympics every time it happens and thought by now the pandemic would be beginning to be in the rear view mirror and it could bring hope instead the opening ceremony made me depressed to see an empty stadium and everyone wearing a mask.

I get why it was done but I may skip watching entirely this year if everyone is going to masked at all times and having to look at empty stands.

Another year, another Olympics where football is quite irrelevant. Only Spain seems to give a fuck (by calling up a bunch of players that were in the Euros and doing their best to turn Pedri into the Spanish Jack Wilshire), the others have U23 players we never heard of. Even France doesn't give any fucks and throws in two Mexican Liga players as their O23 ones.

I'm excited to see all the new sports, along with swimming because that is always the best. (2024 may bring a close second though...)

For some reason, synchronized diving is always fascinating to watch. I look forward to sitting on my couch and judging these insanely athletic divers for minuscule mistakes, knowing full well I would never be able to do something like that.

Maybe it's just me but watching other people watch sports doesn't sound like the most entertaining television.

Anyway, I missed the live broadcast of the Opening Ceremony this morning because I was at work so I'll be watching when NBC rebroadcasts it at primetime in *checks watch* oh my, ten minutes!

I really can't believe cities are still willing to sink this kind of money into hosting the Olympics.

Made it to the parade of nations on the primetime broadcast, surely if they were gonna have two flag bearers they could have bore two flags? It looks awkward seeing them trying to hold the flag at the same time lol.

So far looks like Greece had the right idea where they took turns and UAE had one flag bearer?

I mean come on the Argentine guy looks like he's throwing the woman around while she's trying to hold onto the flag.

I feel quite sad about it to a degree - Japan has had its arm twisted to go ahead by the IOC, it's all rather muted and an even bigger loss than normal given the investment that went into it.

Yet on the other side it's the culmination of a lifetime's dedication by individuals to reach the peak of their chosen activity, it's a dream for so many.

I hope we can celebrate the achievement of individuals while questioning the power the IOC has to literally cause deaths.

In all reality, football hasn't mattered since the 1928 edition, at least the men's tournament. The women's tournament is a different reality with it seen as a junior version of the WWC.

The fact that Japan is able and willing to host the Olympics shows how dedicated they are to its ideals.

Even in the midst of a pandemic where lives are risked… sports matter, ads matter, brands matter, Olympic glory matters, medals matter. It really shows the priorities of the leaders.

You also have to remember Tokyo was set to be host of the 1940 Olympics but then it was moved to Helsinki and then World War II happened… you get the idea. So I think it’s understandable why they fought hard for the Olympics they don’t want to lose the chance.

They held them in 1964.

A few years ago I was in an airport bus from my hotel to the airport in San Francisco, early morning.. terribly hungover. I got into a conversation with an old couple behind me, he was American and she was Japanese and they'd met as volunteers at the Tokyo Olympics, fell in love and, at the time, were going for something like a 50th wedding anniversary back to Japan. It was super sweet.

Hey why does the United States get six different spots in the Olympics when countries like Italy only get one?
