Faction Type: Trading Company
Flag (Optional): N/A
Governing Ideology: Profit
Leader(s): Johnathan McBryde
Territorial Claims: Brown
Population: 2,000
Armed Population: Trading Company
Technology Level: Post Collapse

History: Founded fifty years ago around 2170, by Henry McDowell, simply known then as an independent traveling merchant, it was McDowell's idea of utilizing the Mississippi River as a trading route. At first he operated a raft, bringing goods from connections in the north and selling it all along the river, but eventually he had enough money to establish a small trading network and outpost where the current hub of the company is now. By 2190, his operation was branded the Mississippi Trading Company, and Johnathan, Henry's oldest business partner and second in charge, would take over when Henry would perish. Johnathan would establish a formal trading relationship with the neighboring hold, and open up a few ferries across the river, controlling a vital river dedicated river crossing point across the river that was lacking across other areas.

In 2210, Johnathan would open the first riverboat casino, and it became a staple of their services, people from all around coming to strike it rich in the cards. With a new influx of profit, Jonathan was able to buy some leaders in the nearby hold and secure a contract where they were given free passage and protection in the surrounding territory by them. Over the course of 50 years, a trading company went from one boat to a small fleet of trading ships and caravans across the region.

Culture: Profit based, the Mississippi River Trading Co., commonly known as the River Traders, will deal with anyone who isn’t shooting at them and has goods to trade. They deal everything, but their main money makers are food and water rations, and two riverboat casinos. While using a barter system, a lot of values are based on the .38 bullet and what it’s worth related to other goods, and ammunition is often used as a main currency. However, most ammunition is post-collapse reloads and steel case, not high quality.

Armed Population: 1 500, with proportions of about 1 250 brutes as foot soldiers, with assistants playing the role of dean-officers, and majors as generals.
Technology Level: Prior-Collapse as well as some Post-Collapse, as the upper echelons of power are prone to hoarding more advanced technology and selfishly not sharing it with the council.
History:
Recorded in a freehold near the ruins of Ellsworth
"Come near the fireplace, for I have a story to spin on this rainy night. Long has the story of the Harvardians passed into legend and myth, of a place of esteem and science that stood once in Boston before all fell into ruin, a great university, one of the world's most brightest of places, their alumni shining with knowledge passed down from generation to generation of professors. In the wake of the plague though, even that great place could not stand, a group of those that walked its hallowed halls predicted what shall happen next, but they were mocked, and their alma mater rejected their theories and ideas, this group, now known as the Harvardians, had decided then to not wage a fruitless battle and rescue themselves before the ruin would come.

They've stocked up on goods, on the glimmer of their time, on everything a sane person at the time would ask, 'Why are you buying all of that, we have so much for so cheap our shelves are overflowing!', and then they've left the dying city, to make for the wilderness where they'd wait, and even from there they could see the fire raging as the old world crumbled. They've waited for nearly twenty years until the last afterglow of the fire the old power unleashed had faded on the horizon, and from their waiting place where they preserved and hidden what they could, they all took a decision, to return to their former home that rejected them, now proven right.

They've found ruin, and disorganization, they couldn't live with what they had seen, so, they've took lead and they were followed by the lost of Boston that survived the fall, they've begun directing those that were left lost by the crumble, and slowly the lights in the city started turning back on, you may even see from here, if you have a keen eye, the glow that they rekindled.

Huh? What is that? What happened next? Well, no one knows for sure, one day the previously buzzing radio with reports from the Harvardians fell silent, my grandpa once told me a story his grandla told him that they've used to come here often by metal boats with rumbling engines, to talk and trade, well, that stopped as well, the most we know are from sea bandits and those who came close to the Harvardian border.

Their borders are guarded vigilantly, by tall men and women that seem to embody physical condition, armed to the teeth and in uniforms that seem to resemble what the old power's soldiers once wore, it is said that if you come close enough they take you with them, or shoot you if you try to run or resist. They take you to a building right on the border where you're subjected to various esoteric tests, and when you not pass them they stick a syringe into your neck from which you pass out shortly after, and awake far from their border with a note "All knowledge for the Harvard, and yet you offered none."

If you pass? No one knows that, it's unknown if there are even such people, and if there are, none have ever met them. As for the sea bandits, well, when they rarely don't raid, if you somehow appease them, they may tell you that they're from a peninsula near the Harvardian city, and that they raid them often, sometimes they're driven away, sometimes they're able to take some loot of technology, the price for every time they succeed is worth it for every time they failed.

Yes? Yes, yes, recently, they have been here again, a day after the 150th anniversary of the supposed return of the Harvardians, yes, they've supposedly breached close enough to fire a shot at the Harvard itself during the Harvardian celebrations. I fear they've angered the sleeping giant, my old eyes look at the glow from the rekindled lights of Boston, and all my senses tell me.

A terrible murmur has come from Harvard."

Culture: The Harvardians, what descendants of many alumni and professors of the esteemed Academy have a very science-oriented outlook, with many decisions being taken based on scientific theories and debates between the majors, some of the radical elements of this society have even begun to shun emotions, proclaiming that it was what eventually brought the old world down. They zealously protect and hoard technology, so much so it often interferes in the workings and economy of the state, over time science and technology have become nearly mystical, with glimmer tech being the stuff of legend and the buildings of Harvard have become a protected spiritual site, much effort has been put in preserving them, and most are expected to make a pilgrimage to the site at least once a year, delving deeper into their mysticism one might discover that it has also inherited many beliefs from Christianity, recognizing Jesus, but not as a son of God but a prophet, who's medical and philosophical advances were later squandered for manufactured legends, similarly their quasi-religion recognizes something similar to a God, yet in a greatly reduced form, syncretized with quantum physics, this being's only role was the setting off of the big bang.

Society of this state has become intensely stratified, with three distinct castes forming, supported by an unrelenting eugenics program, dim-witted but very strong, the lowest caste, affectionally nicknamed "Brutes" by the two higher castes they come mostly from the people who survived the collapse before the return of the Harvardians, in absence of computers there has also been formed a caste of people with extremely good memory and even better mathematical skills, being in the middle of hierarchy they can sometimes, for great achievements, be lifted to the highest caste, finally, the rulers of this society, Majors, named after an old academic degree, have been selected over 150 years ago, from the first Harvardians returning to Boston, mostly for their intelligence. A paradoxical love culture had been cultivated while encouraging fleeting and quite shallow yet passionate romances for their psychological benefits, childbearing is strictly controlled by the state.

For generations their society has been mainly isolationist, trying to preserve and scrounge up whatever tech they had at hand, with the most outsiders they had to contend with was the occasional bandit raid from a neighboring clan, a new trend has emerged, as last year's raid has done the unthinkable and tried to raid the holy site of Harvard itself, which coincides with nearly all advanced tech being found in their controlled territories there had emerged calls for the extermination or subjugation of the clan, and for research expeditions to be launched further inland, and perhaps even overseas, as these dramatic occurrences rekindled a nearly forgotten sense of curiosity.

one of these days i will make wholesome nations and characters, but today is not that day.

Character Name: Commandant Victor Geyers
Gender: Male
Birthdate/Age: May 25th. Aged 36.
Faction Alleigance: Purified Republic of Amerika
Physical Description/Image:
Geyers stands at an average 5'10 in height, and maintains a body weight of around 182. He is considered quite physically fit, even when compared to other Amerikan fighting men. He is extremely clean cut, and well groomed. With his black hair being slicked back with a semi undercut. Even when compared to other Officers he is extremely maintained in his appearance.

His non field duty attire only comprises of his simple olive uniform, a pair of worn rifleman's gloves, and field boots. His uniform, although somewhat crude in makeup much like his comrades, is well maintained compared to others.

During a field inspection.
Occupation: Purification Initiative Administrator/Slave Management
Birthplace: Unknown, believed to hail from Ohio.
Biography:

There are few in the Amerikan lands who are known by name, and those who are are usually regarded with fear and dread. Commandant Victor Geyers not only happens to have both, but is also regarded as the worst of them all. With him having a somewhat humble beginning as a grunt in the Amerikan forces. Up until he got a surprise promotion to the higher ranks. Following the sudden death of his commanding officer involving chlorine gas, and a deep mineshaft. He quickly moved up through the Officer ranks over a short few years, and got himself almost to the very top of the ladder. Being given total control of the most major efforts at achieving "Purity" in Amerika. A position he not only earned, but one he feels right at home in.

Even with such a mundane background. There's so much more to him. With tales of horror coming from slaves, travellers, and bandits alike. Each painting him as a completely demonic figure. An association made worse with the state "religion" in Amerika that utilizes old folklore and other mythological aspects in order to spread fear and compliance. Where superstition is intentionally used to warp and bend the truth as a weapon against the impressionable outsiders.

Luckily for the curious, and not so superstitious, ones out there. There is truth to be found if one digs enough on him. The downright genocidal and depraved system of totalitarian governing, subjugation, and enslavement of most of the West Virginian populace has been spearheaded by him. With his management causing the whole system to ramp up efforts, and be much more effective at achieving "purity quotas". With his methods being described as manipulative, efficient, and cold. Where he would employ unorthodox tactics to ensure slave compliance, and keep slave importation at manageable levels. With a knack for bureaucracy, and field work, he has managed to make this his own twisted life project out of his job.

Oh but the real horror of his management isn't what he does with slaves. It's what he's done to hunt rebels, runaways, mutants, and bandits. With men under his command being reported to use whatever at their disposal in order to achieve acceptable results from their operations. Entire camps have been bombed, gassed, and slaughtered. Slaves would be utilized as suicide bombers, and live bait. The remains of their targets being quickly disposed of, and never seen again. It's brutal, but most importantly for the Amerikans, efficient at keeping their lands clean of trouble.

Regardless, of what is truth or superstition on this monster of a man. He's a very real threat to anyone who enters the lands of West Virginia.

Equipment:
-Refurbished 1970's era Colt AR-15 with sling (Kept in storage unless in a field command position.)
-Refurbished 1911 Pistol
-Pack of Locally Produced cigarettes
-Refurbished foreign gas mask
-Olive uniform, post collapse manufactured.
-Refurbished CBRN gear

Flag (Optional): Here. The flag is a relatively new adaptation of George Walker's successors. Previously, the Walker Coat of Arms was predominantly used. The coat of arms is still used in some capacity, but the flag generally supersedes it now.
Governing Ideology: Absolutist royalism with the trappings and aesthetics of a more feudal realm.
Leader(s): Madam Queen Camila I Mia Walker
Territorial Claims: Here. The dark purple are the crownlands, while the lighter shades of purple represent the sub-kingdoms whose administrations have yet to be integrated.
Population: 10,000 in total across the crownlands and the two sub-kingdoms.
Armed Population: Roughly 1,500 for the crownlands and 750 for each sub-kingdom.
Technology Level: There is some rudimentary industrial production in the crownlands, meaning that some Prior-Collapse technology is still accessible to the higher echelons of society and the military, but most technology employed in everyday life is Post-Collapse.

History: When George Benjamin Walker, along with nearly fifty others, was ejected from his community at the young age of 23, the group despaired for their safety and survival. Many of those who had been exiled had never left the confines of their enclave before. Walker, on the other hand, was, despite his age, a relatively experienced survivalist. Himself and a core of about a dozen others who had survival experience quickly assumed control of the aimless group, and began walking along the San Joaquin river, encountering a few isolated communities as they went. The post-apocalypse along the San Joaquin was a little different than other places. The river retained much of its fertility after the end of society, meaning that many survivors were able to create relatively thriving communities along the river valley. However, many of these communities were wary of Walker and his band of exiles for a number of reasons. Thus, few were willing to accept or offer Walker and his group any sort of salvation or safety.

Thus, Walker and his compatriots struggled to find a place to lay roots, and, over the course of a year of nomadic ranging, the group's numbers began to slowly dwindle. Recognizing that they needed to settle down, Walker was determined to seize some of the San Joaquin's fertile territory for himself - and peacefully, if at all possible. Many small farming communities along the San Joaquin had heard news of some of the most fertile land in the valley being at the confluence of the San Joaquin, the San Pablo drainage basin and the Sacramento tributary. Here, however, the territory was jealously guarded by a mutated beast of vast proportions.

Walker and his survivalists, convinced that the beast was mere myth, set off to find this fabled land. As they approached, one morning Walker set off by himself to do some scouting, when he came across a den, and a mutated bear the size of a truck - the so-called "myth" he had dismissed. The bear attacked Walker, and after an excruciating battle between the two, Walker slayed the gigantic beast, though not after suffering terrible wounds himself. Temporarily immobilized by his wounds, he did what he could for himself, but was trapped in the bear's den.

When a search party of Walker's group located him four days later, he was feverish and delirious, only having survived through eating the mutated bear's meat. He barely managed to explain what had happened but, with the bear dead, the group settled on the land, and quickly brought up a number of structures. The group took care of Walker as best they could, but it seemed that his wounds were too great. One morning, following many of his followers' preparations for Walker's death, he emerged from his new quarters wounded, but reinvigorated. He claimed that he had, while in his feverish delirium, witnessed a vision. He claimed that the bear he killed was the guardian spirit of the river, and when he killed it, he freed the Twin Gods, Manifest & Destiny, from the bear's imprisonment. The Gods made a deal with Walker - in exchange for saving his life and crowning him a king, Manifest-Destiny expected that he would worship them and proliferate his people. According to Walker, they gave him a purpose - and with vigour, Walker began to go about it.

He became King of the new settlement - named Walkerton - and both Walker and his people began expansion with earnest. Over the course of half a decade, Walker's personal philosophy was made clear - the worship of the Twin Gods Manifest-Destiny, and the inherent power that the Gods gave to their followers. Walker integrated a number of beliefs and various neighbouring faiths into his own personal philosophy and created a unique, demi-artificial culture that mixed old school monarchism with his own understanding of American Exceptionalism and the general undercurrents of Californian Valley Culture. With skilled diplomacy and smooth talking, Walker forged a mutual defensive confederacy that comprised of a number of settlements along the San Joaquin. Over time, however, Walkerton became the primary settlement of the Confederacy and Walker's personal power grew over all of the cities, the king subtly undermining the other settlements' authorities until their governments were formally abolished, one by one, as years went by.

As a few decades passed, Walker became less of a warrior and more of a scholar. He became interested in salvaging old world technology and literature, much of which he integrated into his religious doctrine, elaborating on the role of Manifest-Destiny both in the larger sense and in one's own personal life. He created a court culture, ennobled many of his loyal, long-time followers, and created a primitive bureaucracy, the likes of which was generally unknown in the California Valley by his time. By the king's fiftieth birthday, Walkerton had become a bustling city with thousands of inhabitants and the king's authority stretched from Walkerton across the northern half of the Valley.

As the king aged, the question of succession began to be asked. George Walker had three sons and a daughter. Walker believed it unnecessary to designate a specific successor, and instead nominated all three of his sons as joint kings following his would-be death. Eventually, his time came - and Walker passed away quietly, in his sleep. In a distortion of his legacy, Walker's Valley was carved up into three separate kingdoms - the eldest son, Elijah, received the Kingdom of Walkerton, while his two brothers Elton and Elliot received the kingdoms of Sutter and Placker respectively, each of their capitals being colonies founded by Walkerton's citizens.

George Walker's daughter, Camila, was left out of the succession, though her close relationship with Elijah precipitated the young noble's stay in Walkerton. Disaster struck in Walkerton where, two years into his reign, the king choked on some wine and died. Despite both Elton and Elliot making moves on Walkerton, the Kingsguard, led by Jamiesson First-Finder, clashed with both brothers and prevented them from taking the city. In their stead, he elected his wife, Camila Walker, daughter of George, as the Queen. Not a year later, both Elton and Elliot had met their end - both brutally massacred in their bedchambers, along with their wives, by assassins. Both having died childless, Camila inherited both of their titles and lands, reuniting the brief split among kingdoms.
Culture: Valleyan culture is much different than others that surround it. It has been described as "insular, but inclusive". Indeed, the Kingdom's culture is, ultimately, an artificial extension of the state religion and governance, which is relatively unique among many others in the San Joaquin Valley and beyond. While they still speak a variant of American, a series of pronunciation shifts have taken place over the years. For example, the San Joaquin River is pronounced "Sanwakin", and California is pronounced as "Californ-eye-aye", as it was said that this was how Walker himself pronounced it.

Other than this, there are some more obvious culturally-unique traits to the kingdom. Both the fledgling nobility and the lower classes are encouraged to adopt a more "Medieval" sense of fashion, both in the court and within the cities. Most clothing shops only sell more "traditional" fashions that most closely resemble what most Valleyan historians think European Medieval clothing resembled. The economy is focused on the bettering of all - and Walker's "Every Man a King" doctrine means that Royal Guilds - founded and supported by the monarchy, have tendrils in all portions of the economy and, with the specific exception of subsistence farmers, trades and artisans are both economically promoted and protected. The monarchy, at least in theory, is responsible for each and every individual citizen, and thus operates a baseline palace economy. Royal Guilds help plan the economy with the monarch's direction, and are in charge of resource production and collection. In turn, the monarchy then redistributes the collected wealth to where it needs to go.

Military service is generally volunteer-only, but the culture celebrates service as a part of one's contribution to their worship of Manifest-Destiny. The Kingsguard is an elite organization that makes up the core of the Royal Army and is comprised of full-time, professional soldiers. In times of war or crisis, the palace can organize the levying of mass-conscript forces, which is undertaken by the Guild of Military Fellowship.

Scholarship is openly promoted by the kingdom through the Royal Charter for the Promotion of Academic Revitalisation & Expansion, which is effectively a guild in all but name - except that it rarely deals in economic specifics. At some point in their lives, all of the nobility are expected to contribute to the ever-expanding compendium of works of the "Trail of Life", Walker's definition of the general principles and studies that should guide one's everyday life in order to live in a way that's compliant to the doctrines and tenets set forward by Manifest-Destiny.

The Walker dynasty, or what is left of it, is viewed as near-divinity, due to the sheer reputation of George Walker and his decades-long reign.

Character Name: Camila I Mia Walker.
Gender: Female.
Birthdate/Age: 19.
Faction Allegiance: Kingdom of the Valley.
Physical Description/Image: Here.
Occupation: Queen of the Kingdom of the Valley.
Birthplace: Walkerton, Kingdom of the Valley
Biography: Born the fourth child and only daughter of King George Walker and his wife, Camila's mother died during her birth, crushing her father's heart greatly. Some court nobles believe that this is potentially why Camila was left out of her father's succession. She had a standard royal education, like her brothers, though while she was taught military strategy, she was kept from the battlefield. During her childhood, she developed a vested interest in history, including the history of The Valley and the history of what came before. She was also increasingly interested in various cultures, and, by her teens, she introduced a number of fashion trends at the court.

When her father died, she remained a member of Elijah Walker's court, staying at the side of her eldest brother while the second and third children fought for scraps in Packer and Sutter. After a month-long courtship at the behest of her brother, she was married to Jamiesson First-Finder, despite the fact that he was twenty years her age and the two barely knew one another at all. For Elijah, this marriage cemented his control over the Kingsguard, an organization that would be the key to besting his brothers, and for Jamiesson, it meant marrying into the royal family. For Camila, however, it was like being imprisoned. Animosity grew between the couple as it became clear to Camila that her new husband was not interested in her, but rather the status and prestige that she brought with her family name. However, Camila was a young woman, inexperienced in the practice of court intrigue. When Elijah died suddenly, and subsequently her two brothers were murdered in their palaces within hours of one another, it propelled Camila to not just the position of Queen of the Valley, but also the last scion of the Walker dynasty.

Despite her suspicions about the deaths of her three brothers, she now finds herself terribly out of her depth, though she is far from an unwilling ruler. Her inexperience is coupled with a surprising resolve, and her popularity among the court is unparalleled. Despite this, however, her husband, the King-Regnant, is a very interventionist spouse despite his mostly-formal title. Claiming her age and inexperience as reasons for why she isn't suited for ruling alone, Jamiesson First-Finder often acts as if he is the monarch, not her. He often "advises" for or against things before Camila has a chance to weigh in on them, and frequently takes care of issues through the Kingsguard without the Queen ever knowing about them. Despite the prosperity and safety of the realm, the internal politics have begun to polarize between the rightful Camila and the experienced Jamiesson.

Character Name: Jamiesson First-Finder
Gender: Male.
Birthdate/Age: 39.
Faction Allegiance: Kingdom of the Valley.
Physical Description/Image: Here.
Occupation: Head of the Kingsguard, Designated Prince-Regent, Husband to the Queen of the Valley.
Birthplace: Walkerton, Kingdom of the Valley.
Biography: Some believe him to be the real power behind the throne, Jamiesson was born the second child of Jamie First-Finder, one of the closest friends of George Walker before the two passed away, Jamie gained his moniker and ennoblement after he found George Walker in the Bear's Den, and was an early supporter of Walker's doctrine. His son Jamiesson, however, was not entitled to any inheritance outside of Jamie's large wealth and title, as his father lacked any real land holdings. Jamiesson, an ambitious individual, quickly worked his way up the ranks of the Kingsguard, ingratiating himself first to the elderly George Walker and then to his eldest son, Elijah. It wasn't long before George's successor in Walkerton appointed Jamiesson as the head of the Kingsguard. Despite his age, he also convinced Elijah to marry off Camila to Jamiesson, pulling the head of the Kingsguard above standard nobility.

Following this, he orchestrated a number of plots to get his now-wife onto the throne of the kingdom despite her general dislike of him. He engineered the posioning of Elijah, and, when it seemed that his plots would risk a civil war between Elijah's two younger brothers, he had both of them killed by hidden agents in their respective capitals. Not only did this ensure that he would assume power through his wife, but it also meant that there were no other legitimate possible claimants to the kingdom. Assuming his wife's good health, he intends to rule indefinitely through her, sometimes employing underhanded methods, brutish intimidations, or otherwise superseding his wife's nominal authority. However, without the security of an heir, the sudden death of Camila would throw a wrench in Jamiesson's plots.

Shortly after the establishment of several trade routes, He pushed west, utilizing rafts to swiftly establish temporary docks and settlements downstream in a constant and brutal battle agianst hostile mutated wildlife and fauna. However, the horror and death would pay off for him, for he now dominates the waterways, and has established contact with the remaining pockets of survivors.

Ten years later, on top of the luxury items Mackwell's company has been exchanging with other minor factions, he introduced a new line of quality roll-up cigarettes, with home grown tobacco. "Charles's special" was a hit amongst the population of the island, bringing a influx of profit for Mackwell, especially popular among those who perform intensive labor. With an iron grip on the island's trade and profit margins off the charts. Mackwell begins unify the enclaves, tribes, and survivors of the islands with promises of a better future than whatever was going for them, his drastic methods might have incited violence between some Faction, but as time flies by, and attrition mounts. The underpowered groups just simply can't resist, reluctantly joining Mackwell's empire.

Over the course of 25 years, Donald C. Mackwell has effectively subjugated the entirety of prince Edward island into submission, stamping out any pockets of resistance with his own private milita of 500. However, this just wasn't enough for mackwell....

Culture: PEIT Co. Has somewhat attained the culture of a banana republic in the 1950s, with all of the occupations and workplaces in the company under strict productivity quotas, with miners and plantation workers getting the worst of it.
Every employee of PEIT Co. Are guaranteed an ample amount of food ration per week, luxury items rationed through stamps that serves as their pay, and a decent roof under their heads. So long as their customers aren't robbing, pickpocketing shooting, and harassing employees, The company is willing to trade with anyone and anything. using cold hard cash as their main currency, with post-collapse ammunition serving as the secondary currency if their customers have no cash.

Nationstates Name: Arktic

Faction Name: New Order Confederation of Tribes and Allies, or NOCTA
Faction Type: Tribal Confederation
Flag (Optional): A cloth or hide banner, any color, with hundreds of red hand prints on it, made in blood.
Governing Ideology: A loose but formal tribal confederation under broad anarchist, animist and primitivist cultural connections and understandings led by a semi-democratic Assembly.

Each Tribe and Clan must send in at least a single representative to the Assembly, or they will face sanctions, hostility, and even war. The Assembly ratifies the existence and membership of new tribes, creates laws and judges inter-tribal and inter-clan disputes by vote, handles relations with technologically advanced outsiders (known as “Burners,” or “Ghosts”), and in times of emergency the Assembly distributes warriors/supplies from places of safety/abundance to places of danger/famine and forms emergency commissions of trusted men and women to conduct affairs.

Individual Tribes and Clans can generally run themselves however they please once recognized, and they tend to be familial, shamanistic, stratocratic, democratic, or some combination. However, Tribes and Clans can also be expelled and punished by the Assembly if they break taboos or threaten their fellow members. Clans, representing smaller social groups or larger extended families, are recognized frequently and easily but are often punished and expelled; larger Tribes (as collections of Clans) have to fight much harder to get themselves recognized, but once recognized they are harder to prosecute and have more power.

Leader(s): The Seven Ones are the seven leading Tribes, and are the most powerful among all of the member units of NOCTA. Their chiefs and leaders, appointed by the Ones to serve on their behalf, are known as the Hands of Power. They generally serve as the leaders of political parties within the Assembly and collectively run foreign affairs. The are:

-Matteo Wolfhead, a controversial, young, and ambitious warrior-prince of the militaristic Blackstorm Tribe.
-Violet Miseisei, the conservative matriarchal high shaman of the theocratic Purpleflower Tribe.
-Sunshine Bells, a wealthy, bubbly, old “third-gender” trader of the commerce and mining-focused Goldsand Tribe.
-Gormon Stonefist, a young but humorless representative of the Brownmount Tribe, a tribe of prolific builders and trailblazers.
-Yumana Blessed-Leaf, the newly-minted chief of the Greentree Tribe, and matrilineal descendent (great-great granddaughter) of the mythical founder of the Red Hand Nation, Dr. Melina Whitsun.
-Listener Kisha, the enigmatic and mysterious religious leader of the equally enigmatic and mysterious Bluemoon Tribe.
-Martial Malik, the representative of the Greyriver Tribe, an upstart trading clan widely considered to be the usurper of the decadent, defunct Orangesky Tribe (led by the disgraced drunk, Cloudchief Jfree) whose place among the Seven Ones they have taken.

Territorial Claims: Marked in yellow.

Population: 8,000 tribespeople.
Armed Population: Typically fielding less than 750 fighters, but with 2,000 men capable of fighting.
Technology Level: An idiosyncratic enforced mix of Post-Collapse, Renaissance, Medieval, and Stone Age: some materials and techniques from Post-Collapse and beyond are generally permitted for clothing, medicine, and structures, but hot metalworking is frowned upon, and firearms exist in a legal grey area and are only wielded by the chiefs and elite warriors of certain clans (and not without some scandal). Most technology easily identifiable as Prior-Collapse or more advanced is actively sought out to be destroyed and/or repurposed, with a particular hatred for industrial chemicals, engines of any kind, and computers as “poison”.

History: In the ancient days immediately preceding the Collapse, an influential professor from the University of California Berkeley moved into a compound in the Ozarks and began to produce a number of radical tracts. Drawing inspiration from and evolving the ideas of works about anti-colonialism, anarchism, radical environmentalism, and systems theory, Dr. Whitsun issued a manifesto: the First Word of NOCTA. The contents of her manifesto and other supporting articles are mostly now lost to time and to mythology (though preserved copies are rumored to exist in the ruins of ancient universities), but the gist of it is broadly known: it stated that the combination of ascendant harmful technology (specifically engines and firearms) and modern bureaucratic authoritarianism were the core causes of the world’s current problems: spiritual, economic, ecological, cultural, and political. The only hope for the future of mankind, according to the manifesto, is a two-fold revolution in human affairs: first and foremost a return to ways of life that were in place before the arrival of polluting and corrupting technology during the industrial revolution, and secondly a political recognition of the familial clan and social tribe as the only honest and valid expression of human politics. In the chaotic, depressing atmosphere of the Collapse, Dr. Whitsun’s manifesto circulated widely, and despite frequent government attempts to suppress the disruptive group, the NOCTA began to collect social outcasts, hardcore environmentalists, desperate refugees, and dissatisfied intellectuals to the forests of the northern continental United States. During this time, Dr. Whitsun laid out the Way of Truth, the “constitution” of the Red Hand Nation that created the Assembly, and the seven starting tribes were founded.

As the Collapse picked up steam, NOCTA began to grow and evolve. The weak and uncommitted began to die out or leave (including, uncomfortably, Dr. Whitsun herself, who disappeared from her yurt one winter day exactly 180 years ago), leaving behind a lean but strong tribal system. Soon, the arrival of a number of American Indians fleeing deteriorating conditions in their nearby reservations gave NOCTA, which previously had been something of a mixed-up band of hippies, a true injection of North American native ethnic identity and tribal culture, fleshing out the Tribe part of their acronym. These arrivals frequently were rapidly placed into positions of high authority within the Nation, and although the chaos of the post-Collapse era kept them scattered across the Tribes and Clans and prevented them from fully preserving and expanding the American Indian nations they originally came from, they left an indelible mark on NOCTAs’ material and metaphysical culture, and to this day their descendants remain powerful and well-respected members of the Confederation. Of course, this is not without controversy, as many Native American nations survived the Collapse and view NOCTA as a culturally appropriating parody of their people and way of life. However, one can hardly blame scared, hungry people fleeing for their lives for not necessarily caring all that much about strictly adhering to their culture, and the migrations and mixing from American Indian populations has largely stopped in the meantime. Beyond this, two hundred years of genuine, real, good-faith peace and cooperation between NOCTA and their remaining American Indian neighbors have smoothed over most bad relations to the point where the surviving American Indian nations simply view the NOCTA as an unusual and weird but largely harmless hold. The combination of these arrivals and the NOCTA ideological program began to give the new alliance a distinct tribal flavor as natural cultural mixing and intentional cultural manipulation did its work. A new mythology, culture, and way of life grew from this unlikely and motley coalition, and within fifty years, everyone who could remember what life was like before was already dead. The group became what Dr. Whitsun envisioned: an eco-friendly alliance of tribes, living in accordance with the ways that preceded the “advanced” civilizations of Earth. This transformation is either a testament to the adaptability of humanity and of Dr. Whitsun’s genius, or an example of the degenerating process of the Collapse, depending on your point of view.

Two hundred years since the collapse and the vanishing of Dr. Whitsun, and the New Ozark Confederation of Tribes and Allies has become solidified as a truly tribal confederation, becoming a refuge and a place of belonging for those who seek an alternative to both the marauding bands of raiders and the new oppressive nations growing from the ruins like a cancer on the land. They now view themselves as the only true expression of humanity, with everyone else being called “Burners” for their destructive activities, or “Ghosts” left over from an age that is now righteously dead. A broadly insular and isolationist behavior and a self-consciously environmental and tribal image have created a complicated and unique culture among the ruins of the old world. However, the growth of both the NOCTA and the “Ghosts” that surround them is starting to threaten their way of life, and ambitious leaders who have less of an attachment to the Way of Truth than their forebears are highlighting the cracks in Dr. Whitsun’s system…

Culture: The culture of the NOCTA people is, by design, quite diverse and situational. One of Dr. Whitsun’s chief insights was the intentional disconnect between the people and the land, caused chiefly by cultural imperialism from people who developed their culture in one biome but have taken over another (and thus must damage the new biome so that it fits them), and so the project of NOCTA consciously avoids this by working closely to live as best as possible in harmony with whatever natural environment they find themselves. There are Tribes and Clans of nomadic herders and hunter-gatherers, simple settled agriculturalists, and semi-nomadic riparian fishing and boating cultures, each with their own unique traditions and different ways of life suited to their needs. In terms of violence and strictness, these Tribes and Clans run the whole gamut, from Spartan-style militarism and intense religious Puritanism, to fervent pacifism and xenophilic cosmopolitan laxity. Generally, despite this diversity, they live together in peace: disputes over territory and land use are settled by the Assembly when they arise.

However, there are a number of commonalities among these disparate communities. As mentioned above, NOCTA is a self-consciously tribal, spiritual, and ecological culture. There is not a sense of cultural shame or inferiority upon meeting more traditionally “advanced” societies, nor do they see their emphasis on the tribe and clan and family as a problem: on the contrary, such old-world organizational systems are disparaged by the NOCTAs as artificially contrived at best and outright evil at worst. All their cultural artifacts and imaginings are specifically formulated to make themselves as “primitive”-seeming as possible. Nudity, pattern tattoos, bone and semi-precious stone jewelry, hide clothing, frenzied dances, wood bonfires, yelping and chanting, bisexual free love, third-genders, totems, teepees, exotic nature-themed naming, natural drug use, every sort of “primitive”-flavored cultural behavior can be found among the NOCTAs in one form or another, frequently drawing inconsistent but real influences from the nearby American Indian cultures but also totally “artificial” and “foreign” elements from across the globe. A detractor (especially those from said American Indian cultures) might argue that all of this, especially the rejection of gender and sexuality roles, is simply a kind of stereotypical role-playing that is quite disconnected from the “real” tribal cultures of Earth’s history, and that very well may be a valid criticism of Dr. Whitsun’s early project. But the counter-argument is that if you and everyone you know have been “role-playing” a cultural way your entire life, for centuries, and everyone neither recognizes nor participates in any other, how is it not real to you? Are we not all, in a sense, simply “role-playing” our ways of life that were set down by another?

Linked to this self-consciously tribal and “primitive” culture is their religion and mythologies, which are likewise varied but connected by a few things. Confederated Tribal religious activities are uniformly shamanistic and animistic: specially empowered individuals are believed to be capable of communicating with and influencing the non-human forces of the world. Special herbs, mushrooms, natural minerals and animal products are also frequently used in religious ceremonies, ranging from the pipe-smoking of tobacco and arawan in simple every-day social meetings, to the secretive moonlight consumption of imported mixtures by high priests and priestesses to achieve visions (indeed, these sorts of natural drugs and remedies are the NOCTA people’s primary agricultural exports). According to these beliefs, everything from rainbows to radiation possesses its own sort of spirit, with varying degrees of power, relevance, and righteousness. These animistic spirits play important roles in the general understanding that NOCTA people have of the world they live in, and are used to explain everything from why thunder follows lightning in the sky to how poppy milk soothes pain to why the engines of “Burners” belch black smoke into the air.

Speaking of “Burners,” a core part of NOCTA culture is the active rejection of destructive industry and technology. Engines, generators, foundries, motors, chemicals, all of it is hated and despised by NOCTA culture as a self-evident evil, and a threat to not only the NOCTA way of life but to the Earth and life itself. Such technology, when recognized, is either intentionally dismantled or repurposed in a way that destroys its original function (abandoned vans being used as immobile shelters, smartphones being used as armor or jewelry, so on). Metalworking exists in some tribes of NOCTA, but stone working is preferred and anyone involved in hot-working metal, from the miner to the charcoal-burner to the blacksmith, is viewed as a sort of second-class “untouchable” (although cold-working metalsmiths are greatly respected, and smarter and less fanatical tribes pay these “untouchables” quite well for their services, and even sometimes let them attend ceremonies disguised after a ritual purification). There exists a harsh and divisive debate about the role firearms should play in Tribal and Clan affairs as well, with the more naturalist and religious tribes arguing that they should not be used at all, while more militaristic tribes and hunters defend them as a necessary evil, although both are in agreement that their use should be carefully considered and that they should always be kept away from dense communities and religious sites when possible.

Armed Population: (See Government Types before determining armed population.)
2,500 Infantrymen, forming the United States Army. Many of them are part of long lines of Secret Service Agents or members of Special Operations units, and as such, have been trained to extremely high levels by members of their family

200 Special Forces Members, most of them are descended from members of JSOC, and highly trained by family members and instructors

History:

The United States of America.

Or so they say.

After the collapse of civilization, what was left of the government of the United States retreated into the bunkers underneath the ruins of Washington D.C. Their last atomic resort had failed, and nothing was able to save them from the chaos above. Comprised of Senators, Representatives, Special Forces men, Secret Service members, and anyone and everyone who held power in the Federal government. Their population slowly dwindled in those bunkers. First 15,000 then 14,000, 12,000, 10,000. When they finally resurfaced in 2218, they found a new world above them. The descendants of those lucky few had nearly forgotten their heritage. They still held elections, still had congress, and still called themselves America, but they had forgotten about the America of old, the one who triumphed over all it's enemies, with the exception of it's final one.

And then they reached the capitol, tattered flag still waving in the wind.

The Capitol Building reminded them of what they once were, and what they could be. It reminded them of who their ancestors were, and why their family had been one of the chosen few ushered into the bunkers that fateful day. In the ruins of the governmental buildings they held governmental meetings, and they centered their defense around Andrews Joint AFB. By 2221, they had taken back Washington. Political parties began to from, with the Survivalists and Reclamationists becoming the two main parties. However, in 2222, a controversial election led to a civil war, decreasing their population from 11,567 to 9,891. They fended off attacks from raiders, mutants, and other hostiles, all while waving the tattered American flag. Their superior technology allowed them to defeat raider group after raider group, and they began to expand out of the D.C area. By late 2222, even with the setback of the Civil War, and a storm that destroyed all their aircraft, they managed to conquer the surrounding areas. In 2223, with multiple civilizations rising, they realize that if they wait, they may never be able to restore order to the American lands. Controversies about how to deal with mutants and raiders persist, but nearly all factions agree that they should focus on restoring America. Most of their food, water, and industry comes from the facilities in the bunker, which was made to be self-sustaining, for obvious reasons.

Culture:
The culture of the United States is inherently nostalgic, as many of them long for the days of stability. Some long for times as close as when they still had Aircraft, but you will not find a single American who does not long for a past time. Whether that be the bunker, pre-collapse America, or just yesterday, before they ate that pre-collapse burrito. The citizens are patriotic to a fault, all of them committed to restoring the American government to it's rightful place as controller of the American lands and a world power. Many of them idolize soldiers, especially the people with heritage tracing back to a member of the military.

If you want.

Just make sure you're not stepping on any toes with it.

Faction Name: Dallas Warband
Faction Type: Bandit Clan
Flag (Optional): Image
Governing Ideology: Warlordism with Anarcho-Capitalist Characteristics
Leader(s): Warlord Ethan Williams
Territorial Claims: Image
Population: 1.000
Armed Population: 500
Technology Level: Mixed (Post Apocalypse Tech with Metal Age Tech)

History: The Dallas Warband is founded in the city namesake, the Heart of Texas who was a unique State. Unfortunately, all of this will be erased by the Great Catastrophe that was the Apocalypse where millions of Texans died of disease, radiation, and other disasters. Right now, Texas was nothing more than a shadow of its former self, and its population either died in the following years or was forced to stay underground with the remaining supplies. Over a while, the people emerged from bunkers to begin the rebirth of mankind and rebuild Texas.

As soon as the base was established, the Second Republic of Texas was created by President Samantha Garcia who promised prosperity, but corruption and opportunism quickly flourished and soon she was overpowered by the established Oligarchy. Protests will soon erupt after Anthony Jackson was elected as President known for his corruption and his "Empire" within the Government. A period of Authoritarianism and Populism would plague the Young Republic, the common man would suffer from poverty and poorness, while the boys of Anthony prospered and flooded by wealth. Slowly the people couldn't handle it anymore and started to organize an uprising against the regime into the 'Lone Star Front'. Despite the regime's best attempts to stop them, the Front grew big enough to trigger the Texan Civil War.

The Texan Civil War briefly raged on in the city of Dallas and Fort Worth between Lone Star forces and the Republicans under Anthony. After a bloody fight, the Lone Star Front took Dallas. A stalemate soon followed between the sides. Ethan Williams, a friend of Anthony, and Boss of his own private army assassinated the President and quickly taking reign of the Forth Worth proclaiming his own Warband. The Lone Star Front wanted to form a truce with the new participant, but Ethan refused and continued the Civil War. A few weeks later, a breakthrough was made and Dallas would fall later. With no one to contest him, Ethan Williams proclaimed himself as Warlord and created the Dallas Warband.

The Dallas Warband is a Bandit Clan formed by Ethan's private "army" who are hired raiders. The Band rules over Dallas and Fort Worth with an iron fist, terrorizing anyone who opposes the rule. Ethan Williams is also an advocate of a limited Anarcho-Capitalistic society where everything is private and individual by the right of the owner in the form of loot, slaves, power, etc. It promotes a selfish hierarchy where the strong have anything and the weak have nothing. The territory is decentralized between local lords who hold certain sectors of the cities giving tribute to the central power. The Central Power is a night watch state who leaves the local lord rule as they wish, as long as tribute is paid and orders are executed, and will only intervene once rules are not respected.

Culture: The Culture of the Dallas Warband is a mix of Hispanic (Mexican) and American, but in reality, there isn't really a culture as the Warband only raids, pillages, and steals. At the end of every month, the raiders will hold a kind of festival/feast full of food, slaves, and even human hunting.

15 Small Naval Vessels
Technology Level: (Stone Age, Middle Ages, Post-Collapse, Pre-Collapse, Mixed.) Prior-Collapse, with a mix of Pre-Collapse and Post-Collapse tech.

Faction Name: Kampata
Faction Type: Survivor Enclave
Flag (Optional):

Governing Ideology: Totalitarian military junta with ultranationalist elements and state capitalism
Leader(s): The Kamkonta is the leading military oligarchy of Kampata. Comprised of Kampata's top ten brightest and wisest veterans, the Kamkonta are the judge, jury, executioner, planning committee, state, and government wrapped into one group. To assist in their duties and affairs, each veteran has a staff of four advisors. While each veteran has their specific area of administration, the advisors share and discuss information regardless of their veteran overlords, keeping everybody informed and in harmony.
Territorial Claims:

Population: 1,000
Armed Population: 100
  • Despite the Kampata's tribal roots, they had a surprisingly academic mindset with regard to their military's creation and development. Although they were obsessed with producing a tiny but extremely capable warriors, they also knew that it was not enough to create soldiers that were physically, mentally, and spiritually capable. Accordingly, the life of a Kampata warrior, better known as Tampallakama (lit. "Water Ice Bow Man"), began when he/she is five years old. Prior to this, the selection process was meticulous and the criteria was prohibitively strict. Every child is scrupulously analyzed for every sign of talent, especially those identified with high intellectual aptitude, such as, computation, reasoning, planning, and etc. It was not unusual that every five years, out of 500 children, between 15 to 50 would pass selection, screening, and criteria necessary to become a Tampallakama.

    Field instructions included long marching, calisthenics, physical conditioning, maneuvers, tactics, night fighting, survival, and especially stealth. Ceaseless drills were matter of daily routine for warriors-in-training, so as to make them react instinctively and quickly and thereby become more efficient combatants. Rigorous and challenging physical training went hand-in-hand with mental training - the aim of which was to create and strengthen a state of mind of maximum concentration and mental clarity essential for successful situational awareness. Warriors-in-training would be subjected to live nighttime exercises in utter silence and loneliness with no navigational equipment (except the constellations), honing their skills in stealthily tracking and eluding their adversaries. They also endured long periods of meditation and silence with priestesses during which they were instructed to focus their attention in their chest, to clear their minds and mellow their breathing, thereby allowing he/she to move and sense their surroundings without conscious thought.

    Since perfect vision was essential for hunting, the warriors-in-training were subjected to a battery of vision-enhancing exercises to improve their eyesight. One exercise involved identifying objects and symbols flashed before their eyes for a fraction of a second. In another exercise, they learned to recognize and describe objects in the outermost corners of their peripheral vision. Perhaps most infamously of all was the foliage-spotting exercise, where warriors-in-training would spot camouflaged objects from variable distances, especially at long ranges in pitched black darkness.

    Physical and field training was complemented by classroom and hands-on instruction in a wide range of academic fields, such as, forensics, logic, physics, mathematics, chemistry, geography, and astronomy. This was so that Tampallakamas can read maps and constellations, calculate trajectories (plus temperature and humidity), conduct criminal/detective investigations, detect and disarm traps, treat and heal wounds, etc. Among a warrior-in-training's studies is culture, specifically that of any civilization the Kampata discovers. This area of expertise allows a Tampallakama to comprehend and utilize a foreign culture's traditions, laws, customs, beliefs, mannerisms, and personalities to their advantage. Culture especially goes hand-in-hand with psychology and forensics - understanding and exploring the behavior and creativity of a culture/people allows a Tampallakama to predict and adapt to their adversaries.

    By the time a warrior-in-training is 20 years old, the marriage between spiritual and physical training with mathematical and scientific education produced a tiny number of hunters/huntresses who were extremely talented, intelligent, and resourceful in sniper warfare, reconnaissance, and special operations. Among the 15 to 50 children who started training, only five to fifteen of those children would survive and graduate. Because of the extremely lengthy and challenging training, however, numerical superiority will be a critical weakness in any war conducted by the Kampata.
  • Image
    (Camouflage and concealment is one of many important aspects of a Tampallakama's training. The clip above depicts a female Tampallakama dressed in colors matching her surroundings as much as possible, in which in this case, snow and taiga. Though the tall 'cat ear' flaps on the peaked cap may appear silly at first, the flaps are connected with an anterior flap, both of whom are made of stiff composite layers of felt and hide. Notice the poncho as well, bearing a winterized 'platanenmuster' camouflage pattern. Normally, Tampallakama would wear ski masks, hiding everything except their eyes, and stuff snow in their mouth to hide their breath in cold temperatures.)

    Despite the extensive and rich education of the Tampallakama, the Kampata are handicapped by their technology. Relatively in gradual transition and moderation, Kampata technology is somewhat schizophrenic but innovative nonetheless. Perfecting and establishing the craftsmanship of flintlock mechanisms and rifling (plus early telescopic sights), it was uncompromisingly important that the Kampata would arm its tiny military with the best technology available. This meant that all flintlock firearms required the following features: 1-in-20-inch twist rifling, ladder aperture sights, a double trigger, and a 12mm bore. Quality was important over everything else, emphasizing accuracy and range to create the perfect sniper rifle in the constraints of current technology.
Technology Level: Metal Age (Primarily) beginning transition to Post-Collapse (Secondarily)

History: Once a vast multiethnic and multilingual stone age tribe, what remains of it are survivors of a civil war, one fought by warring warrior clans in primitive, mobile, and total warfare. While some would meet their end via enslavement, complete annihilation, assimilation, or forgotten exile, a fortunate few would settle down in a cold, empty land in what was an area of pre-collapse Quebec. These survivors are what now became the Kampata civilization.

Although the war is largely a distant memory, the ways of a bygone era remain somewhat fresh in these survivors. Hoping to not repeat history, the Kampata open their minds and hearts to outside knowledge, preparing for future conflicts not with manpower and aggression, but technology and caution. Combined with cultural and linguistic homogeny, the Kampata seek to rebuild their former glory in a new image; however, it has much to prove in the North America wastelands, especially war, once again...
Culture:
  • Despite its tattered and fallen past, the Kampata remain a martial culture at its core. Having once been spiritualist and expansionist like any other stone age tribe, the Kampata retains much of its tribal ancestry; however, the introduction of mathematical and scientific theories and ideas thrusted the Kampata into an unprecedented age of enlightenment and modernization. For example, cuisine and cooking, when mixed with science and chemistry, gifted the Kampata with vast and comprehensive expertise in the health benefits and risks of whatever food/ingredients it handles, serves, and consumes.

    Though handicapped with simple scientific equipment, the vast collection of knowledge gained from collecting textbooks or conducting extensive studies - both upon its own people and outsiders alike - otherwise fuels the Kampata's own research and development base. Therefore, education is both mandatory and a right among all Kampatans - it is the key to ensuring its survival and second chance at life. This emphasis on education influences all aspects of the Kampata civilization, especially its military.

    It's this academic outlook that allows the Kampata to transition from a late stone age civilization to a metal age power, although the Kampata are destined to begin transitioning over to post-collapse technology. With newfound enlightenment and innovation comes responsibility and moderation, however, as the Kampata's own taste of power and collapse taught it the horrors of excess, ruin, and destruction. It is this prudence and tidiness that motivate the Kampata into cleaning and restoring whatever mess, decay, and rubble the world had left behind, even though the Kampata are rebuilding the world in their own image and ideals.
  • The Kampata categorize people as followed:
    - (Ka): The highest and most powerful social class, these are the Kampata's warriors. Comprising ten percent of the population, the Ka are the crème de la crème; they are the 'bows', blades, and battlemasters of the Kampata. Having undergone training and academic education as five year old boys and girls, these are the brightest, strongest, and most capable denizens, responsible for overseeing and ensuring the security, safety, and sovereignty of the entire Kampata civilization.
    - (Tokka): The scholars, students, and scientists of the Kampata, this class includes the warriors-in-training, priests, advisors, artisans, artists, and architects. As the Kampata's most populated social class, this is the Kampata's intelligentsia, think tank, youth group, and faith wrapped into one organization - essentially the '[paint]brushes'. Comprised of more than 65 to 75 percent of the population. As the youngest and second most policed social class (after the Tana), the Tokka are easily malleable and swayed, kept in line through indirect methods (i.e. peer pressure, gaslighting, censorship, etc.), as Kampata culture opposes direct methods of punishment and abuse with a passion.
    - (Tana): The Tana, or the 'Cups' are the landowners and 'state capitalist' of the Kampata. Responsible for the farms, mines, infrastructure, and workshops throughout Kampata, they are the second most rigorous educated and brightest people, second only to the Ka. As the least populated social class (comprising fifteen percent of the population), only the most creative, abstract-thinking, and analytical minds could become a Tana. Even then, the Tana are the lowest social ranking due to their mercantile/merchant affiliation and, most importantly, are the most policed class because of it.
    - (Fjana): People outside the Kampata that retain likeminded morality, ideology, and discipline, and are, most importantly, friendly/respectful. This is the highest social ranking the Kampata give to outsiders when the diplomatic, cultural, economic, and political criteria are met - only the most refined and developed earn this rank. Although the Kampata are a passively xenophobic civilization, they acknowledge and respect any outsider who adheres, honors, and protects the trust between each other.
    - (Pollo): People outside the Kampata that lack the Kampata's morality, ideology, and discipline, but deemed safe or harmless. Associating this class as headless chickens, the Kampata deem this class of outsiders as too unrefined, unintelligent, or culturally weak for diplomacy. Therefore, pollos are open to colonization and assimilation.
    - (Tarro): People outside the Kampata that lack the Kampata's morality, ideology, and discipline, and deemed too dangerous or hostile - akin to stubborn or angry bulls. Essentially the mark of death, the Kampata view anyone being equally or more powerful than the Kampata as the greatest threat to their existence.
  • Kampatan (endonym: Kamjalla) is the sole language spoken by the Kampata. A language isolate that survived the aforementioned ex-tribe's tumultuous past, its ultimate derivation and relation to other languages is unclear. Little is known of the language's prehistory, or when it first appeared, as the Kampata lacked a standard writing system until they adapted the Latin script somewhere in the 2160s.

    Kampatan is typologically fusional and exclusively uses suffixal affixation. Nouns, adjectives, pronouns, numerals, and verbs are inflected depending on their role in the sentence. Although there are three noun cases (nominative, genitive, and instrumental), the extreme use of inflection and compounding (agglutinative and abbreviated) allows for a free word order.

    Nouns and adjectives have no grammatical number, but they inflect for gender. There are no articles or pronouns. Verbs are conjugated, primarily for tense (past, present, and conditional), aspect (simple, perfect, and progressive), gender (masculine and feminine), and mood (indicative, imperative, and subjective). With thirteen consonants (J, F, Fj, K, L, Lj, M, N, Nj, P, R, S, and T) and two phonetically distinct vowels (A and O), Kampatan has lexically significant pitch-accent and mora-timing isochrony to differentiate words from one another.

    A = ɐ (Near-open central vowel)
    J = j (Voiced palatal approximant)
    F = v (Voiced labiodental fricative)
    Fj = f (Voiceless labiodental fricative)
    K = k (Voiceless velar plosive)
    L = l (Voiced alveolar lateral approximant)
    Lj = ʎ (Voiced palatal lateral approximant)
    M = m (Voiced bilabial nasal)
    N = n (Voiced alveolar nasal)
    Nj = ɲ (Voiced palatal nasal)
    O = o̞ (Mid back rounded vowel)
    P = p (Voiceless bilabial plosive)
    R = r (Voiced alveolar trill)
    S = s (Voiceless alveolar fricative)
    T = t (Voiceless alveolar plosive)

Nationstates Name: Olthenia

Faction Name: Monument
Faction Type: Kingdom
Flag (Optional):
Governing Ideology: Faith-inspired, feudal-flavored cult of personality.
Leader(s): Ma Stallion
Territorial Claims: Two counties somewhere in south-western Kansas.
Population: Six thousand, more or less.
Armed Population: Eight hundred.
Technology Level: Metal Age.

History: Nothing comes from nothing.

When the world falls down around you and all you know is lost – what’s the one thing you’ve actually got left? If Monument is anything to go by, the most likely answer to that particular question is faith. In its own way, Pre-Collapse society had faith in a whole host of different things, conscious or otherwise, wrong or right. These faiths peopled the airwaves and chatrooms of that old, Glimmer-tech magic that was the Internet with gospel-shows and message boards. Echo chambers where word-tribes and thought-communes of every stripe and color came together to worship every creed imaginable from personal liberty to the almighty dollar, from Flat Earth to Christian family values to anonymous outrage or even guns and white power. Everything, by everyone, and to hell with the mainstream bullshit. It might be hard to tell what Monument’s got to do with all of that – but keep cool, yeah? And just remember: nothing comes from nothing. So with all the noise and fury of the Glimmer-teched, glorious Internet in mind – Monument, then, is simply this: an Internet echo chamber, sans the ‘net.

You can’t tell a story without starting it right. And the right way to start the Monument’s story is with the Word of John.

To a casual, basic-bitch newbie, Monument might look a lot like a post-Collapse Kingdom. It’s got borders and laws, after all – and a single badass bitch in charge of it. Soon as the dust from the Great Collapse began to settle and never-ending streams of refugees got tired of running, a whole slew of little kingdoms like it sprang up across the US of A. Monument, God bless it, is definitely one such – a post-Collapse polity of a couple thousand souls, moving more or less in synch to the fading guitar-twang memory of one man: John. Looking back to what was and wasn’t in the mad-bad fury-days of Post-Collapse America, it’s honestly hard to tell who John was. What’s certain is he was a leader; a dude with the gumption and righteous say-so to get shit done – and to get it done his way. He didn’t have God or Angels on his side, but then John apparently didn’t have to. The man had his guitar, chunky glasses, seventeen wives, two husbands - and yeah. You get the idea. To a basic-bitch observer, what folks today call the Monument is probably just this: the remnants of a cult of personality centered around a cynical, post-Collapse rock star, law man and cult leading conspiracy theorist: John – and his holy Word.

Now, with all this in mind, the tale of Monument is also a tale of refuge.

In the post-Collapse chaos that was the former state of Kansas, John had scraped together a community of fellow survivors. Welded it with his own personal brand of crazy, fed it from the know-how to coax crops from close-to-barren soil and guarded it with the guns, spears and chopper-blades forged from lamp posts and trailer-hitches in a dozen crude forges. Most of all though, with his own personal brand of showmanship and rot-gut meth. One moment in particular that stands out like a faded photograph is the tale of John’s radio and how he used it; a hand-held walkie-talkie of the type cops would hang from their belt. John apparently talked to it – and it, like it or not, talked to him. And not in secrecy or on the down-low neither. Nuh-uh. When John talked, he talked on stage before his huddled believers – put on a goddamn show for all to see. It was how he doled out law and justice, say-so and advice. It was divine guidance delivered with a Glimmer-tech prop. And apparently, it worked well enough for John. So much so, in fact, that some of his followers began to claim the gift of prophecy too. Earlier on, we called John a ‘post-Collapse rock star’ – and that’s a fairly precise description. For all intents and purposes, John was pretty much a one-man show. When his commune grew and took on followers though, and those followers turned around and took on other followers, some of the folks around him took on more of John’s spiel. In a way, the were back-up singers and guitarists to John’s lead, coloring John’s Word with their own distinct brands of crazy, furious faith. Some of their names have come with us down the years too; names like Deal Silvers, Little Soul Powah and Ma Stallion. Then John died. And this is where the ‘refuge’ part of Monument’s tale comes in.

Because shit went down.

Earlier here, we described Monument as an Internet community sans the Internet. For folks who knows what certain Internet message boards and chat-groups can be like, sure – as long as you agree with the main themes and narratives? Fine. You’re one of the pack. The moment you don’t, though – you can find yourself under pretty heinous attack pretty darn quick. Now transport that level of heinous, furious faith-fuckery out of the Internet and onto the bombed-out streets of a post-Collapse survivor community, maybe you can imagine what the aftermath of John’s death was like. Because notice, we haven’t said anything about how John died. He just did, yeah? Maybe the dude fell down some stairs. Maybe his heart gave out, or he drank himself to death in in the middle of his fucked-up warlord’s mansion. Maybe his walkie-talkie radio, the one that let him hold his real-time talks with God or the Cosmos or whatever, came alive and ate him. Whatever. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that his congregation up and split. The details of the split is pretty murky too. The way tales tell it though, the prophet folks call ‘Deal Silvers’ immediately marshalled a post-Collapse militia that hung a dozen of his personal ‘haters’ and their kids from the lamp-posts. Little Soul, this other figure with a name wide enough and wild enough to stand out in the chaos of John’s ministry, apparently tried to arrest Deal Silvers, failed and instead wound up fighting a straight up pitched battle with his blood-culty prayer gangs. Both sides, in the aftermath, is said to have eaten their enemy dead. All in all, in their death-throes, they watched the stars of John’s fading night disappear behind smoke black with human fat. And others, like Ma Stallion, took to the road and fled.

Ma Stallion, if you’ve followed us this far, is another of those names that stand out from John’s ministry. She was a faith-healer, a blues-shaman and all-around ‘influencer’ – and the tale of how she and the hundreds who followed her into western Kansas survived that journey is one worthy of at least a couple paragraphs. Suffice to say, it’s a tale that eventually ends in a small, burnt-out town called ‘Garden City’. There, from a fortified compound in the old Garden City Zoo, Ma rules – and has rules – for neigh on a decade. And despite fever-sickness and conspiracy-feuds, despite burnt flesh and the stink of sorcery, Ma and her little congregation has survived. Built up. Even flourished, in their own little way, into lands beyond Garden City proper. Because Ma Stallion might not have a radio of her own, the way John once had – but her makeshift pulpit’s still one folks turn to for justice, truth and know-how. It’s righteous, yeah? So righteous. And you can call that whatever you like. A word-tribe. A cult. A Kingdom-come.

To Ma Stallion and her followers – it’s just their Monument.
