Floods in more and more countries

Postby The Alma Mater » Fri Jul 16, 2021 8:58 am

Surprised I could not find a topic about this already; but I do think it warrants one:

The past few days the southern Netherlands, Belgium and western Germany were hit with massive amounts of rain. This has caused several rivers to overflow and dikes to fail - resulting in massive floods in large areas, destroying houses and killing at least 120 people with hundreds still missing. As I type, several towns and cities are being partially evacuated by the military. Several remote villages in Germany can not be reached anymore due to the roads being destroyed and the phonenetwork being down. Belgium has declared coming tuesday to be a day of mourning.

EDIT: title edited to reflect the floods in India, China etc.

I posted about it over in the what is now more or less general climate change thread but yeah this news is awful. I've seen some simply shocking videos of whole towns being devastated by water that's high enough to sweep cars away.

Basically, the rivers that receive their water from precipitation have all swollen a lot because of the unseasonal heavy rains.
The big rivers can handle all that extra water, thanks to overflow areas and strong dikes. But the tributary rivers have no such measures in place, and they are overflowing.
Additionally, any extra precipitation can no longer flow away to these smaller waters, and as such stays in place, sogging the ground and building up to a foot of watery plain.
Climate change is giving all the Rhinelands, and the Meuse lands, a wallop.

Germany has 103 known deaths, with 43 in NRW and 60 in Rheinland-Pfalz. The numbers are expected to rise when more of the missing are discovered.

I'll be passing through the southeast Germany, Luxembourg and southeast Belgium tomorrow. This isn't the adventure I was talking about when I said I wanted to go on a roadtrip.

Its fucking grim.

Ive seen some videos and photos of how utterly devastated some towns and villages are, and i expect the death toll to rise a good bit more as time goes on.

Unfortunate but this stuff will get worse and worse. The 'Moon Wobbles' will cause even worse flooding in the next 10 years. Its something that we will have to live with.

I don't live in a flood zone but the rainfall here has been absolutely insane. Worst July ever, and in the same year as the worst May ever. Normally the rainfall in my part of NRW is pretty evenly distributed throughout the year and if anything heavier in winter.

We better at least get a fucking Indian summer out of this stupid year.

Worth remembering that we could have stopped or mitigated most of these extreme weather events if we'd started dealing with climate change in the 70s when we first discovered it.

Ah, but happy news: according to Willem Engel, supreme corona denier of the Netherlands, the floods are a hoax to divert attention away from the anti-corona measures.

So nothing to see here. Nope. Nossir.

Damn.

While evacuees from the Netherlands and Belgium are slowly allowd to go back to (the remnants of) their houses, the floods in Germany continue and have now reached the Bavaria region - where people are being evacuated.

Climate change is global,
In China, you can clearly see that the rain line is moving north. Many cities in northern China have experienced rare heavy rains. At the same time, the rainfall in the south has indeed decreased a lot. This is probably why the rumors of the collapse of the Three Gorges Dam have been lower than last year.
Corresponding news about waterlogging in northern cities has increased a lot.

In another twenty years, it will be amazing to see what kind of world we will face .

This is depressing, but also unsurprising. Every part of the world is/will feel the effects of climate change, and this is another devastating example. The worst part is that no matter how high the death toll rises, the one’s profiting off of what is causing this devastation won’t care.
