LONELY MULTIVERSE
The Approx Guide to Equestria

Introduction

The Pony Principality of Equestria is a diverse country inhabited by dozens of sapient species, each contributing to the nation's proud culture of tolerance and giving the nation a reputation for compassion and kindness. Tradition and innovation have combined well in this Southwest Atlantian Oceania nation, rapidly bringing it into the modern era after centuries of isolation from the rest of the multiverse. This Lonely Multiverse travel guide is designed to be the ultimate companion for any tourist (regardless of their species) visiting Equestria, and is loaded with every tip and bit of advice one needs to have an safe and enjoyable stay.

History

It is widely believed that Equestria can trace its origins back to at least 2000 years ago, and perhaps even further. However, the early history of Equestria is shrouded in mystery, as precious few written records exist from that time period and those accounts which have survived to the modern day were passed down orally over the course of generations and frequently contradict one another.

Perhaps the most popular story of Equestria's founding is the tale of Hearth's Warming. According to the legend, the three Equestrian races once lived apart in three separate nations which often fought over resources, before being forced to cooperate to survive a particularly brutal winter brought about by magical creatures called windigos that feast on negative feelings. The unification of the tribes is commemorated each year on Hearth's Warming Day, a time spend time with friends and family.

Another popular story from Equestria's ancient past is the Tale of the Two Sisters, which has recently proven to be true. Over a millennium ago, the younger of the Regal Sisters, Luna, became bitter at her older sister and those who shunned the night in favor of the day and was transformed into Nightmare Moon and threatened to bring about eternal night. Forced to respond, Celestia banished her sister to the moon using the Elements of Harmony. It was not until just several decades ago that Nightmare Moon returned from exile and was purified by the Elements' new bearers, led by now-Princess Twilight Sparkle, returning Luna to her sister's side as one of Equestria's co-rulers.

Nearly 200 years ago, Equestria came into contact with the outside world for the first time, ending centuries of isolation brought about primarily by the country's remote location. The most important import for Equestria in the decades that followed was not trade goods, but ideas. Mechanization and industrialization were foreign concepts to the largely agrarian Equestrian society that was used to utilizing magic to produce goods that the rest of the world was using machines for. Equestria quickly set about industrializing itself, bringing the country into the modern age, but knowing of the environmental devastation other developing nations had witnessed at the same time, the Equestrians used their knowledge of the arcane to minimize the impact of pollution.

But knowledge of the outside world came at a cost, and that cost was that the outside world had knowledge of Equestria's existence, location, and magical nature. It was not long before the Equestrians faced threats from outside forces which viewed them as a threat. Some argued the Equestrians were demons inhabiting the bodies of wild horses, others viewed the ponies as a primitive race that could be enslaved and put to work. Equestria responded to these threats by building up a massive navy which was capable of keeping foreign invaders at bay, as well as by modernizing the training and equipment of its defense forces in both the Royal Army and the Royal Guard. Over the last two centuries, the Equestrians have engaged in a number of wars, nearly all of which were fought to defend Equestria's shores, with more recent exceptions in the liberation of South Covello and the Busoga Islands Conflict that were primarily meant to support oppressed groups.

Today, Equestria is an advanced country that has successfully merged tradition, magic, and technology. With an economy dominated by tourism, agriculture, and the mining of precious minerals, the Equestrians have found their niche in the international community. Thanks to its location in Atlantian Oceania, Equestria has become a travel hub for many visiting the region from around the world, and the nation is easily among the more prosperous and safe for foreigners to visit.

Geography & Climate

Equestria is both too large to be safely called an island nation and too small to be considered its own continent. However, most Equestrians live on a large landmass north of Valanora, known to Equestrians as the mainland, due to its size and role as a population and commercial center for the country.

The mainland is dominated by flat grassland and plains, though forests and hilly areas exist and are generally scattered throughout the landmass. Running north to south are the Harmony Mountains, named for Mt. Harmony near the capital city of Canterlot. The mountain range divides the mainland into eastern and western geographic regions, and was once home to dozens of active volcanoes. However, no eruption has occurred in the Harmony Mountains in at least the last 1500 years, and the range is believed to be inactive or extinct. The ancient volcanic activity on the mainland (and on many of Equestria's surrounding islands) resulted in mineral deposits from which Equestrian miners have extracted gold, silver, and other valuable materials for export.

The two most notable exceptions to the mainland's grassy majority are the Everfree Forest and Badlands. The Everfree Forest is more of a jungle than a temperate forest, and is widely considered the most dangerous region in Equestria due to its large numbers of wild carnivorous species, some of which would be considered "mythical" by foreigners. Within the Everfree Forest is the city of Everfree, located along the banks of the Stampede River and home to the largest population of non-equines in the nation. A number of more typical temperate forests surround the Everfree Forest itself. The Badlands, meanwhile, is a mix of marshland and desert near the southwestern coast, largely uncultivated and uninhabited by ponies, but is home to several other species such as changelings and buffalo.

Where things begin to get truly weird for the average tourist is Equestria's weather. Due to the magical nature of many of its inhabitants, the Equestrians are fully capable of creating, manipulating, and otherwise controlling the clouds and weather. This gives them the ability to determine where and when in rains or snows, as well any whatever other conditions they wish to create. The Equestrian government is very actively involved in coordinating the pegasi of the country to generate and control weather patterns favorable to Equestria's inhabitants (and its many earth pony farmers, in particular). As such, the odds of an Equestrian weatherpony giving an incorrect forecast are almost nonexistent, unless you happen to be in the Everfree Forest (the only region of Equestria where the weather is practically impossible to control due to a prevalence of wild magic).

Travel

Travelling to Equestria is generally easy, as most methods of interregional travel are available to visitors from outside Atlantian Oceania. Most international flights to the nation arrive at Canterlot's Harmony International Airport, Manehattan's Royal International, or Stalliongrad's Friendship Heights International. However, it should be noted that pilots flying to and from Equestria internationally must receive additional certification due to the nature of the country and much of the surrounding area. Because of this additional requirement for pilots, some airlines do charge extra to cover the training fees.

Once in Equestria, there are many other options for travel. Rental cars, taxis, and buses are easy to find in the larger cities such as Manehattan, Stalliongrad, and Everfree, though one might notice that most vehicles are electric-powered. But while cars and buses are regularly used in some cities, there are also several in which their use is limited to emergency services (most notably in Ponyville and Canterlot's Old City district) or is totally banned (as is the case in Cloudsdale).

However, the limited use of automobiles is balanced out by the proliferation of trains for travel between and within cities. Some of the more prominent and historical lines (such as the Ponyville-Canterlot Express) still use steam-powered engines or high-speed trains designed to mimic the classical appearance of an Equestrian train. Subways are also a common feature in Equestrian cities, spreading underground to connect many places of interest for foreign tourists. Cloudsdale is the only city where cars, buses, and trains/subways are unavailable.

But in the end, the most common method of travel in Equestria is one's own feet (or whatever body part one has to move oneself with). Few Equestrians drive or use public transportation unless they have to, preferring to take in the clean air on their way from place to place.

Culture & Society

Religion

Any analysis of Equestrian culture and society must begin with its majority religion and guiding philosophy: Harmonism. A dualistic religion, it revolves around the physical sun and moon deities, Celestia and Luna, as well as the six principles known as the Elements of Harmony. The religion's origins are near-impossible to determination, though it is widely believed to begun shortly after ponykind first encountered Celestia and Luna over two millennia ago. Unlike other religions, Harmonism lacks a written scripture or centralized multiversal organization to create such writings, occasionally resulting in disagreements between Harmonists from different regions. For the sake of brevity, we will only be exploring the most common spiritual and secular beliefs held by those from Equestria.

As stated earlier, the central beliefs of Harmonism include the worship of the Regal Sisters (Celestia and Luna) and adherence to the Elements of Harmony. Immortal and, according to spiritual Harmonists, capable of moving celestial bodies through magic, the two Regal Sisters are worshiped (or at least respected) by ponies throughout the multiverse as living goddesses. Some have recently begun to question the actual power of the Sisters, though it is widely accepted among ponykind that they are the two most powerful magical beings in existence.

The six Elements of Harmony are Honesty, Laughter, Kindness, Generosity, Loyalty, and Magic. These Elements exist both as philosophical concepts as well as physical objects capable of great power that contain the purest magical essence of the aforementioned virtues. The philosophical aspects of the Elements are more central to Harmonist faith as a set of morals to guide one throughout life. They are, for the most part, fairly self-explanatory, except for Magic. The sixth element has been connected not only to the ability of equine Harmonists to use magical spells, but also to the drive for new knowledge or understanding. It also has been connected to the power of friendship, and is mentioned in the most common Harmonist saying: "Friendship is Magic".

However, Harmonism has expanded from its spiritual roots (particularly as more non-equines are exposed to harmonist teachings) to become a secular philosophy as well. Secular Harmonists generally try to follow the virtues of Harmonism, though they generally do not believe that the Regal Sisters are physical goddesses. The expansion of Secular Harmonism has also led to the traditional virtues being adopted and woven into other religions as well, such as Christianity. Excluding the overwhelmingly Spiritual Harmonist equine population of Equestria, one can find many of the multiverse's most common faiths among the large immigrant communities, particularly Christianity and Islam, owing to the large Banijan and Busogan communities.

Language

Traditionally, ponies have spoken in their native Equestrian tongue; however, since the emergence of Equestria into the international community, many Equestrians have dedicated themselves to speaking multiple languages. The most common non-Equestrian language is easily English, which is spoken by approximately 70% of the population. It should be noted that some English words have been altered by Equestrians to better fit the equine majority, as the use of "everypony", "anypony", "hoofball", and other such words are modifications of the more standard English words. Mastery of many different languages is especially common among Unicorns, and as they are generally the ones more involved in business, are easy enough to find for foreign visitors. Numerous translating services exist throughout the Equestrian States, and airport bookstores generally contain a plethora of multilingual dictionaries for purchase.

Food

As one might expect from a nation dominated by a species of herbivores, many traditional Equestrian dishes are vegetarian in nature. The proliferation of such food is also furthered by the general lack of agriculture for the purpose of raising up animals for the slaughter. To hurt another living creature is, to many Equestrians, simply unthinkable. However, Equestria is not only inhabited by equines, but also by griffons, dragons, and humans (among others). Restaurants do exist to cater to these non-equine species, and do serve a wide variety of meats imported from outside of the region. That being said, it would be unwise to be seen in public eating a hamburger made from beef or any other meat product as many Equestrians are disgusted by such foods. This can make finding food difficult in smaller cities and in the nicer areas of the larger ones. A general tip would be: if your waiter looks like a herbivore, don't ask them for a cheeseburger or steak. Equestrian cafes are fairly creative with what they can do with non-meat products, and the bread and pastries are oftentimes better than what you might find in other nations.

Drink in Equestria can also differ significantly from other nations around the multiverse, as the most popular alcoholic beverage is hard cider, found at virtually every bar, pub, and restaurant. Ponies generally refrain from drinking too heavily, but other non-human sapients such as griffons are known to consume vast quantities of alcohol in a single sitting. We advise our human readers to graciously decline any drinking challenges offered, as one is unlikely to win, and drunk griffons can be notoriously temperamental. Beer is a distant second to cider, in terms of both popularity and availability, though bars and eateries which cater to human tourists will often keep domestic Equestrian brands in stock.

Inter-Species Relations

As Equestria is home to a wide range of species, it is practically impossible for any visitor to the country to avoid seeing a member of another species, regardless of where they might be. Unicorns could pull this off in certain neighborhoods of Canterlot, and earth ponies could do the same in isolated rural areas, though foreigners will often stumble across other species upon entry into Equestria as customs officials are perhaps the most diverse Equestrian demographic.

Relations between the three major pony races have not always been smooth, and some tensions still exist today despite the educational system's teaching of acceptance and tolerance. However, inter-species violence is very rare within Equestria, as is violent crime in general, with the possible exceptions coming from dragons, griffons, and other more naturally-aggressive species. Angering a dragon is about as dumb as it sounds, and is not advised unless one has a death wish.

Visitors to Equestria are also advised to avoid appearing speciesist to locals, as Equestrian society could be described as having a herd mentality, where an attack against or insult towards one person might be considered an attack on all those around that person. Thus, some words to avoid using in Equestria are: horse, mule, foal, or donkey. Calling a pony any of those terms is likely to result in a backlash towards the offending individual, as they are considered to be offensive unless one is actually speaking to a sapient horse or donkey, which are both easy to tell apart from ponies through their size and general lack of bright-colored fur or manes.

Valanora Times
Times Are Changing

The obvious need not be stated, yet it must be addressed in some form or another, things are not as they were a year ago and for the Vanorian people to continue to flourish and thrive, it is a situation that needs tending to. Just over six months ago, millions of Vanorians as well as countless millions, perhaps billions across all of Atlantian Oceania awoke to the news of the Foxchester Declaration. For many, those words still draw up large amounts of ire and a great depth of sadness, for the declaration and consequences of it were not mere ripples in a pool but a gigantic maelstrom that swept across the entire region and affected parties. One need only look at the list of nations that will not be sending representatives to Equestria to see the significant impact that the Declaration had upon the region and how those who are left in it continue to attempt to thrive in the wake of it.

Political fallout was inevitable with a move such as the Declaration and both the Empress and the Senate moved swiftly, requesting an expulsion of citizens of the newly formed Anaia region, as well imposing a travel ban to those nations outside of the requirement for sport and the complete halt in diplomatic and economic ties to the region and its member states. While this act definitely ruffled some feathers domestically, particular with the sporting clubs that saw a significant part of their rosters pulled away from them with very little warning or time to replace them, it also drew significant ire internationally, even among fellow Atlantian Oceania states. The Empress made her case as to the reasoning behind the action taken by her and the Senate, but even then it seemed to have been poorly received. The Empress left the conference with more questions than she had answers and waiting very concerned houses, politicians, and another notable people within the Empire, who all had their own concerns that they wished to voice.

Months have come and passed with little movement in the issue with Anaia and some were beginning to wonder if this were to be the new normal for the nation, a situation that seemed very uneasy from an outside perspective. However in a surprise press conference, the Empress shocked many by announcing that the travel ban to Anaia had been lifted, as well as the ban of travel of Anaians within the Eternal Empire. The news comes after a few weeks of rumors that the collective might of the Premiership were pressuring the Empress and her government to allow the clubs an exemption to the ban of Anaia citizens within the Empire, with the clubs looking to outfit their rosters for the upcoming season. With a whole region potentially blocked off from pursuing, it looked to threaten the collective good of the league and its pursuit to be among the very best leagues in the sport. In the press conference, the Empress talked about steps towards normalizing diplomatic relations with the region, though did say that trade agreements would be done on a case by case basis rather than as a region, compared to the collective agreement with the rest of Atlantian Oceania.

The news also comes on the eve of the AOCAF starting in Equestria and a week before the heads of the various football associations are set to meet in Raynor City, inside the VFA offices inside the VSC HQ located in Raynor City. Among the items on the agenda of the meeting is the discussion of the new location for the headquarters of the AOCAF, after Krytenia relinquished its control when joining the Anaia nations. While there have been several cities put forward, the Eternal Empire's capital seems to be the favorite to be voted as the location, with a proposed site alongside the VSC HQ, where the building would be the combined headquarters of both the AOCAF and AOCL, both tournaments who are facing new challenges as much of the region is in this new age.

Nikkii Kater arrived in Stelburg having been chosen by the Leazi-Corada to be the voice of the Vilitan Cove as the nations of Atlantian Oceania discuss how to respond to the Foxchester Doctrine and the subsequent events of uncertain explanation that resulted in numerous former Atlantian Oceania nations having disappeared from the region and displaced a non-trivial distance from their source. In their place left a series of mis-shapen landmasses and some unexpected occupants.

While Kater was no political expert she had her pulse on the citizens of Vilita and Turori and the Leazi-Corada clearly trusted that she would be able to represent their interests in Stelburg. Receiving political and intelligence advice from the two VOIA officers who joined her in Stelburg, and getting Technical feedback from the representative from Tropicorp, Kater made a statement following the representative from Siovanija and Teusland encouraging the nations to remain calm and work together to form the best solution to a modern regional council.

As additional representatives arrived in Stelburg - some representing long time regional occupants and others attending their first regional gathering, it soon became time to get to business. While some were excited to get to the business of selecting a new location for the AOCAF Headquarters. As fascinating a prospect as discussing the new home of AOCAF headquarters was for Nikkii Kater who made her fame as a Vilitan National Team super-fan, the briefings she had received from her counterparts at the Vilitan Orbital Intelligence Agency (VOIA) on the trip out to Siovanija and Teusland had impressed on her the importance of a different item of discussion: AORDO.

The Atlantian Oceania Regional Defense Organization was perhaps a relic of a time long past. It was established at a time that the Region needed protection from foes both external and internal. The measurable half life of Decay still found in North Western Atlantian Oceania and the Glassed Dome just to its south are reminders that any Travelers from the West entering the region are greeted. They are a reminder of just why the AORDO existed to begin with. While Atlantian Oceania had gotten quite relaxed in its own self-existant safety, it now seemed those simpler times were coming to an end. The Leadership of AORDO may have become a glorified poker club in recent years, it was still a system with established responsibilities should it have ever been needed.

While some were in favor of establishing a new pact or organization replacing AORDO, at the guidance of the VOIA representatives, Nikkii Kater impressed upon her fellow delegates in attendance the importance of first establishing new representatives to satisfy the responsibilities within the existing Regional Defense Structure then working to establish if any refinements could improve the structure for the future.

Informal discussions throughout the floor at the Conference had indicated some strong candidates could be emerging from new places for the vacant positions within AORDO Leadership. One such candidate, from the nation hosting the conference, was Field Marshal Reinhard Drachmann - Chief of Staff for the Siovanija and Teusland Defence Forces. It was believed that the locals were looking to push Drachmann as the new head in the position of AORDO General. While Kater was not opposed to the Field Marshal's candidacy, she urged for some formality in the procedures.

Kater's recommendation was that the body of delegates prioritize selection for the lead for three key positions: AORDO General, Head of the Air Forces and Head of Naval Forces. After those three positions were filled then the body could choose new representatives for the Space Forces and Special Forces commands.

Of the prior positions that made up the Atlantian Oceania Regional Defense Organization, only the Command of the Ground Forces (Falcania) and Command of the Intelligence Forces (VOIA) remained an active partner represented at the Stelburg Conference.

The Following Vacant positions should be approved via ballot among the members of the Atlantian Oceania Alliance of Nations (AOAN) as established at the Stelburg Conference:

AORDO General: (Formerly Lord-Commander Aerys Fyreskar of Starblaydia)
Air Forces: (Formerly Krytenia)
Naval Forces: (Formerly Lamoni under Admiral Johannes Thorvaldson)
Space Forces: (No Incumbent)
Special Forces: (Formerly Starblaydia)

The following positions within AORDO remain filled and may be affirmed via popular accord at the Stelburg Conference. Should the nation declare they no longer wish to fill this role then it will be open to the remaining nations of Atlantian Oceania.

Ground Forces: Falcania

The Final position within AORDO is fixed per the AORDO Charter under the control of the Founding Nation and does not require popular renewal:

Intelligence Forces: VOIA

If my opponent RP's first, they have permission to do the following:
Style: 1.75
Formation: 4-4-2
Choose My Goalscorers: Y
Godmod Goalscoring Events: Y (stuff like deciding who scores a PK, who passes to whom and how the goal's scored is cool. Weird shit is not.)
Injure Players: N
Godmod Injury Events: N
Red Card Players: Y (no more than one more than you do for your own team)
Yellow Card Players: Y (same rule as red cards)
Godmod Other Events: N
=================================

Interim Manager: Nathan Hanifer
The former manager of Sarzonia's Under 21 national team, Hanifer was the other finalist for the Stars managerial role. He assumed the assistancy at the request of Mentes and was named interim manager after Mentes was fired.
Interim Assistant Manager: Eric Dent
Dent will serve as a de facto defensive coordinator for the Stars, and will work primarily with the defence and the defensive midfielders.

HOME GROUND: Dave Wilson Stadium, Woodstock (105,690 capacity, natural grass field); alternate home ground i Joe Gibbs Stadium in Woodstock (75,900 capacity)

Roster (Starters in bold)

GOALKEEPERS
1 Carlton Sandt, 22, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds (Lakiska SC, Banijan Soccer League)
Sandt is the younger brother of legendary Stars goalkeeper Horace Sandt. He won the starting job for the Wanderers as a true freshman and led a previously downtrodden side to the national semifinals. He has catlike reflexes and is quick off his line. Can get too aggressive.
33 Trent Woodson, 27, 5-foot-11, 170 pounds (Saugerties Snakes)
Woodson becomes the backup while Paolo Gomes is recovering from a torn ACL. He has a decent mix of size and agility.

DEFENDERS
4 Charlie King, 28, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds (Saugerties Snakes)
King plays as a defensive-oriented fullback, often marking the opposing team's top striker. He relies more on positioning and reading his opponent's tendencies and body language to figure out where to run than on speed. He's not exactly a burner.
5 Tommy Benignati, 32, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds (Wilmington FC)
The older brother of Marco Beningnati, Tommy plays a much more rugged style than Marco does. Can play sweeper in a three-back lineup.
7 Matt Taylor, 27, 6-feet, 185 pounds (Burlington Browns)
Taylor's speed lends itself to being a fullback, but he plays halfback for the Browns. He has a tendency to struggle with more physical forwards and offensive midfielders.
6 John Taylor, 22, 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, Portsmouth University
The younger twin brother of Under 21 national team player Carlette Taylor, John plays a similar style to his sister's, although with much more speed.
18 Ben Russell, 33, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Rochester Renegades
In his first season as team captain of the Renegades, he led the team to a Sarzonian Football Confederation championship, resulting in the team's promotion to the Cyanea League. If he's on the pitch in the event Howard gets subbed for, he will don the captain's armband. He is a reserve halfback for the Stars.
22 Carmela Bowen, 30, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds, Woodstock Justice
Brown plays fullback for the Justice, a Sarzonian women's football team, and typically marks whomever the playmaking midfielder is. Her stamina earned her a spot on the national team.
44 Pat Meyers, 24, 5-foot-8, 152 pounds, unaffiliated
Meyers won a lawsuit against the Portland Timbers third division affiliate when the team dismissed them after successfully proving the club released them due to their gender non-conforming status

MIDFIELDERS
8 Ernie Mabree, 28, 5-foot-10, 175 pounds (FC Corcorran)
Mabree has one of the better left-booted shots in the Sarzonian league structure and is one of the fastest players in Sarzonia. He'll play an important role in Sarzonia's offence.
10 Clayton Wilson, 23, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, (Woodstock Wild) Captain
A grandson of legendary Stars forward Brian Wilson and great-grandson of coach Dave Wilson, Clayton is not just a fourth generation star among the Stars, he served as the playmaker for the Under 21 Stars and is a sterling wing player on the Wild.
18 Carlos dos Santos, 27, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Woodstock Wild)
A right wing player, he will sometimes be called upon to take free kicks if Reynolds is unable to for some reason.
23 Jaxon Hennepin, 28, 5-foot-7, 155 pounds (Wilmington FC)
Hennepin earned a starting role as a playmaking midfielder for WIlmington, but also played half a season in defensive midfield when the team was beset with injuries.
30 Erik Swann, 25, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Portland Timbers)
Swann's strength is being a late-match offensive substitute who can score in a pinch.
14 Winnie Taunton, 27, 5-foot-9, 150 pounds
Taunton takes a majority of the penalties on the women's national team and produces blinding speed on the wings.

FORWARDS
11 Cayden Aguirre, 34, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds (Nicksia Knights)
Aguirre is the creative forward on the squad with an ability to pinch hit as a playmaking midfielder in late-match situations in the event of defensive-minded substitutions.
21 Jake Campos, 23 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, (Portland Timbers)
Campos is a straight up target player in the front line. His leaping ability makes him a prime candidate for headers in the box off corner kicks and indirect free kicks. He played on the Junior Stars team that competed in the most recent AOCAF.
19 Holly Cambrio, 28, 5-foot-7, 145 pounds (Woodstock Justice)
Cambrio adds flair and ball movement skill and the ability to serve as a sparkplug off the bench, but would be a starter for a women's national team if that competition got resurrected.
41 Carly Wilcox, 22, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Woodstock Wild reserves)
Wilcox retained her place on the Wild's reserve squad and made eight appearances and six starts after her transition.

The daily briefings at External Affairs that seemed to take a majority of the day even if they literally only consumed 2-4 hours had by now slowed to a trickle.

Anaia were now their own region. Even though Sarzonia still publicly considered the defection from Atlantian Oceania to be an act of treason and still rejected the Foxchester Declaration as illegitimate, the countries were now no longer regional neighbours. Relations between Sarzonia and Starblaydia, always frosty to begin with, would remain in a state of cold war long after task forces Whiskey, Alpha, Tango, and Foxtrot returned from their patrols and Sarzonia reduced its alert status to a lower, but still heightened state of preparedness.

There was another matter, of course, that of relations with Krytenia. They'd elected a new prime minister, Penelope Baker of the Conservative Party, who extended a conditional olive branch to Sarzonia and President Grant Haffner. However, the language of the communicade left a sour taste in the mouths of Gray House and External Affairs officials. Both sides sent a terse message to Emberton that they would not negotiate under the conditions set forth, leaving relations between Krytenia and Woodstock in a tense status quo. Sarzonia's relationship with Quebec and Shingoryeo were fairly unchanged. The two governments didn't really have formalised relations before Foxchester, and there wasn't a swift move toward strengthening ties.

That meant one major market for iron exports was no longer a viable source for income. Sarzonia would not send any munitions or anything that could be used to forge weapons of war to Krytenia. Nor would anything other than the barest diplomatic niceties exist between Woodstock and Emberton for the foreseeable future.

Senior Vice President and External Affairs Officer Bryan Conway reviewed the standard communique sent from Raynor City about the country's rescinding of its travel prohibitions against citizens of Anaian countries from the Eternal Empire or Vanorian subjects traveling to Anaia. He knew if Valanora, one of the hardest of hardline nations softened its prohibitions against travel, pressure would then be applied to Woodstock to do the same. However, negotiations between External Affairs and Gray House officials repeatedly broke down. The status quo postbellum would remain in effect.

Clearly, Woodstock was not going to embrace the more conciliatory approach seemingly favoured by Raynor City, at least not yet. There would be no breaking of bread between Woodstock and Emberton, certainly not at knifepoint. Whether that would have an effect on the fragile new coalition led by Baker was of little concern to Haffner or Conway. After all, both men had far more weighty matters on their plates than the whims of Emberton.

That left the remaining Atlantian Oceania nations. Catherina signaled their intentions to remain in the region along with Stelburg Conference attendees. So, too, did longtime regionmates Pacitalia, and more recent sporting rivals Banija and Baker Park. There would still be some old heads left in the region, so the upheaval didn't feel like quite as much of one as it otherwise might.

From a sporting standpoint, AOCAF was still a thing, along with other sporting competitions. Sarzonia would still send a team to compete in AOCAF, although there were some differences. Notably, the absence of the heart and soul of the team, midfielder Brady Reynolds, who had just retired along with the team's other conscience, reserve striker Mek'hi West. They had their spots on the squad list taken by two players from the women's national team which just completed a pewter medal finish at the Jenna Raven Cup, also trading as the 14th Women's World Cup.

Nathan Hanifer would remain interim manager, as Incorporated Football Federation chairman Zack Wilson had decided at least for the time being to not remove the interim tag from Hanifer's title. There hadn't been any international interest in the position, and the IFF would likely reject any prospective applicants from an Anaian country out of hand. In any event, no Reynolds and no West would definitely make for an interesting AOCAF.

But that was the whole point, wasn't it? May you live in interesting times.

Stupid Soccer Team Spends Millions On Players But They Still Suck

Sports. They are an integral part of our society. Love them or hate them, they have saved humanity on more than one occasion. Sometimes, however, some big bad people who think they are godly beings decide to take it away from us all because a few players did some bad things and somehow it is everyone's fault. Fast forward a couple of months and the big bad people say we can have sports again, but with everything in shambles and being blocked from the outside world for several more months on top of fines and "death penalties". Forward many more months and we are allowed to go to the outside world again, with no direction, no money, and no hope. Not only have star players decided to retire or quit, but nearly every player seems to no longer care.

Allow a governing body to rectify the situation! They will spend millions of taxpayer's dollars to sign anyone who they can convince to join their team. A team that's biggest success internationally was defeating a top 10 team that was having a bad day once and then proceeding to crap the bed the rest of the time. Despite having a team made up of nose-picking mouth breathers and bowlegged hillbillies, the governing body has thrust them into the real world by entering them into a regional competition which they have also been historically bad at. Their incentive? Just participating in the competition nets them a one month supply of chocolate dots and candy necklaces. A whole ONE MONTH SUPPLY. That's like, 30 times the normal supply. So it is no wonder why all these people decided to join. Candy drives the world, in case you weren't aware.

We can expect this story to go like it always has: team expects to be good, fans have hopes and dreams, team ISN'T good and crushes fans' hopes and dreams, and then the team is left wondering what went wrong. Is it possible that they are out of touch and the problems are internal? No! It is the unrelated hockey player who is wrong! Change nothing and repeat the process over and over again. And in the end they get to complain about why they are losing revenue. It is a cycle that we see on a regular basis in the business world, so to the general population this comes as no surprise. Not to mention the lost revenue that accrued during the several months the team was not even allowed to be together in the same virtual call. One of the Torisakia Inquisition's journalist even has a story about two soccer players who got suspended for running a dungeon in World of Warlords together, despite physically being miles apart from each other. But you guys aren't ready for that story yet.

What can we expect this time? More disappointment. Although, to be fair, for us to be disappointed we first had to expect something. So it is more like we expect apathy. The players don't care, the bigwigs don't care, and we certainly don't care. We would have a better time stapling our extremities to the popcorn ceiling in our grandma's living room while a rabid dog nips at our thighs that are covered in cow blood. But given how that one special corner of society sees those who are apathetic to national sports, we will have to pretend to care. At least only for a week or two. Once it is apparent that nothing has changed, everyone will go back to focusing on better things. I hope those chocolate dots and candy necklaces are worth being a laughing stock, because they sure aren't to me.

The Imperium of Squornshelous was a proud and ancient nation, but that time has ended. Roughly a century after anti-government demonstrations spiraled out of control into a civil war which resulted in the country being split in half, the long oppressed people of the Eastern half of what was Squornshelous could finally take no more. They rose in rebellion and overthrew the Imperium, establishing a provisional government preparatory to the first elections in the nations history. An invitation has been extended to the former Imperium's constituent provinces to join the Confederacy of Squornshelan Remnant States, but any decision on that matter is impossible until either governments can be elected and empowered to address the issue, or popular plebiscites on the matter can be held. Squornshelous exists at a cyberpunk tech level, until very recently located in a pocket dimension consisting solely of itself. It was not wholly unlike the Dreamed Realm, except for the part where it is wholly unlike the Dreamed Realm. More of a nightmare, really. That dimension is currently collapsing via mechanisms that are not, at this time, well understood. The island of Squornshelous has thus arrived somewhere in the north of Atlantia Oceania, perhaps drawn out of its isolation by the dimensional instability in the region. It also seems that this has not severed the metaphysical ties between Squornshelous and its former possessions in the Confederacy, as an unstable dimensional rift still remains to the West of Squornshelous.

The team has lost several players, loyalists to the fallen Imperium that have refused to play for a team representing the new government. Others have retired. One of those, however, remains to manage the team, as the prior management team are being held by the provisional government as accessories to crimes against the people. Thus, former goalkeeper Hege Vogdahl will lead this depleted roster to the AOCAF Cup. The other difference to the roster is the inclusion of two players who had formerly been personae no gratae in the Imperium. Midfielder Tyra Volam was kidnapped by the Ministry of Security for an act of protest during the twelfth Independent Associations Championship, two years ago, while striker Lyyti Vang disappeared from the team during Cup of Harmony 76, later surfacing in the Confederacy as a staunch and outspoken critic of the Imperium. Vang has been named captain, in a move that has distinct political undertones.
As administration of the national team was previously undertaken by a branch of the Imperial government, the Ministry of Sport, and that government no longer exists, there is no national football association as of yet for this team to represent. Nevertheless, these players have been granted entry to the tournament as an independent team, and despite what some might view as an alarming lack of depth, can be counted upon to give their very best efforts to represent their newly liberated country.

Dogsmouth is a curious backwater in the Glorious Southwest. A land that knows only overcast and rain, towns sparsely spread among the vast marshflats and forested swamps, and populated by the sort of people that are happy to call it home. The Dogi (pronounced similar to the Venetian title--or, yes, the meme) are easily spotted by their long, rough hair, toothy grins, and wild eyes.

The nation has been even more insular than usual as of late. An extended monsoon season has all the Dogi bunkering up and battening down the hatches as the absolute highest priority. Even the Dogi football league was suspended as the normally damp pitches were left unplayably waterlogged. But the AOCAF is the one solid link these peoples have to the region at large, and no amount of hell or high water will keep them from going 1-0-2 in the group stage.

Manager - Meredyth Shepherd - The most decorated Dogi manager of recent memory while leading Oakport. Known to be a taskmaster.
Style: 4-5-1, -3

Starters longer dashes = debut
GK - Eliot McCauley - Patient, vigilant, confident.
LB — Chandler Lindon — Has a personal enmity with your ankles.
CB - Colwyn Faulkner - Stocky, strong, fearless. Plays in Brenecia.
CB - Amelia Tuff - Tall, careful, clever. Plays in Ko-oren.
RB - Esther Vern - Classy thug.
DM - Emma Tirrell - Omniscient (metaphorically).
LM - Shyla Benn - Strong left boot. Not much else.
CM - Frederick McKenzie - Energetic play, animated personality.
CM - Aureole Rivers - Fancy footwork and solid passing.
RM - Ellie Dyson - Runs more than strictly necessary.
ST - Cynthia Rayne - Mercurial thunderstorm. Plays in Nephara.

Subs
GK - Lauren Wickham
GK - Jazlyn Wakefield
LB — Caiside Rivers
CB - Delia Stanford
CB - Maël Baldwin
RB - Archibald Peak

Milchama Ends Longtime Isolation

After countless years, somewhere between 6 and 400, Milchama has finally returned to international sports.

More to follow but first the roster:

Coach: Darryl Lamarein - Lamarein was pro in something other than sports, namely an accountant, when he was asked to take over the finances of Mongol FC, then a third division side. After getting the finances in order he also noticed they tended to make more money and play better if they used different tactics with different players. He eventually convinced the GM to let him try that for one game. They won 6-0. They did it the next game, they won 6-2. Lamarein was then made coach of the Mongols where he led them to straight promotions. Then people got angry at him and had him manage the national team assuming that he would get paid for a do nothing job. Then the Isolation ended and now he's doing things. Who knows what's up?

Starting 11:
GK: Miles Inthracam - Surprisingly the only Alexandrian in the squad. Helped Great Alexandria to the most recent title.
D: Dollard Foster - Big man who is known for vicious tackling. Also a decent header of the ball.
D: Ittai Witson - Captain. While only 23 has clear leadership abilities and the ability to love which is more important than any singular footballing skill. Also, incredible defensive instincts which is why he's on the team.
D: George Trois - The third George. Better than the first two Georges
M: Morris Maris - Fast tricky winger. Plays a touch too far forward for the system but is somehow still a starter anyway.
M: Gal Waver - Box to box central midfielder who is known for winning the ball back and recycling it very efficiently.
M: Eloise Johnson - Defensive midfielder. Has played defense for her club team but is moved up because it made sense for this squad.
F: Mattityahu - Mononymed man. Very weird. Great free kick taker.
F: Marc K. Floren - Not related to Marc J. Floren despite the name. Greatest finisher in the modern MIlchamian league.
F: Holden Flomes - Prototypical back to goal center forward.
F: Itamar ben Johansson - Very confusingly named forward. Was not expected until the team was named to be a started. Played as a midfielder for his club.

Subs:
GK: Ishtvan Martin - Second string
GK: LaDonte Crenter - Third string. He also occasionally plays left back.
D: Dallas Hunter - LB
D: Kent Kells - CB
D: Jay Flimt - RB
M: Leetal Fenet - CM
M: Amy Cekarn - CM
M: Kelly Filimitov - LM
M: Colm Interlasskoti - RM
F: Dee Schneider - RF
F: Marvin Gorek - LF
F: Elliot Flok - CF/RF
F: Burt Burner - All forward positions.

Milchama Ends International Isolation!

That's right this is a front page story. Page A1!

And we're back! After an interminable time away that went anywhere between 6 and 400 years depending on how you count time Milchama has decided to rejoin the international community. When Tim Gonneberg decided to end all international contact at some point in the maybe distant past many were upset. However, during the unclear amount of time it happened many warmed up to the idea. Soon Milchamian tourism had leveled out, the borders were closed, even international sporting competitions; the lifeblood of Milchama, had become obsolete as people flocked back to local leagues. It was all a little crazy. Suddenly a proud internationally looking nation had become a proud but inward looking nation.

Soon Milchama itself began to disappear, first from the lips of those who talked about the best baseball teams or soccer teams in the world. Then from those who talked about Atlantian Oceania and the sports dominance thereof. Finally, it was on maps and international affairs. No longer were people talking about Milchama as one of the most progressive economic nations in AO or in the world. No longer were people looking at the large military of Milchama and caring. Also, as beautiful of a country as Milchama is, it started to get boring. Nobody could leave and nobody new was entering. Life was starting to get stagnant and so things started to open up again. Also, it was nice to get a new leader who promised international cooperation. That was great!

First it was little things, those tourists coming back in and going out of the country. Then it was the re-establishment of links to the outside world. Meeting old friends and new in international forums. Then it was looking and seeing that even in the long time we were away that the others had never caught up to us and our rankings in socialist economics, equality, and welfare was where they always were; near the top. Finally, we get back to the real stuff, international sport!

Milchama has re-entered the arena of international sport again! We started dipping our toes back in tennis and that's exciting. I think the doubles team of Stephen Davis and David Stephens could really go places. However, what everybody really wants to see is the baseball. Well actually, the curling then the baseball. But then after that the football. Anyway, this is an AOCAF preview post so we're talking about football here. So instead of going straight into a World Cup, the Milchama Warriors national side is starting through a regional competition in AOCAF and the baseball team gets a try out in the AOlympics. It's very exciting! Go Milchama!

As for how Milcham will play? Who knows? While the Warriors were well ahead of modern football tactics using a nominal 3-3-4 that really played more like a 3-3-2-2 with the outside forwards functioning as something between attacking mids and slightly more traditional wingers brought Milchama a lot of success for a long time. Then other teams caught up and Milchama never really shifted tactics. Of course as people were starting to talk about changing the tactics, the Isolation happened, and the Warriors were never really able to implement those new tactics. More importantly, in isolation, nobody seemed to innovate in the league. Sure the roster post may talk about Darryl Lamarein's "innovation" but that mostly meant he played a traditional 4-4-2 because his team did not really possess four strikers. So by using the best players in their natural positions Mongol FC did quickly rise through the ranks but also, it's a 4-4-2, that's not that innovative internationally. Sure, it's unique locally but it's not that crazy and teams quickly figured out how to defend it.

Anyway, he's already said that he's sticking to a 3-3-4 as head coach of the national team. More importantly, Itamar Ben Johannson is a natural midfielder, Morris Maris should be a striker, and Dollard Foster earned more cards per minutes played than any player in the MFL. This should not be the team that brings Milchama out of its international isolation. These are close to the 23 best Milchamian players right now but playing people out of position, in the wrong formation, and not innovating while we were away are going to lead to some lopsided losses. Many seem to think that the Warriors are primed to get out there and win, I think Milchama will struggle to win any games and will be extremely lucky to get out of the group stage. We shall see. After all since we're out of isolation let's coin a new slogan "Hope for the best but expect the worst!"

Come on you Warriors! Let's Go Milchama!

Home Away

Manager
Didrik Gjedrem
Age: 55
Didrik hit the ground running with the national team, with the Marauders blossoming under his methodical and attack approach to the game, having used his time with United to properly manage the egos as well as the playing time for the squad in order to get the team to play to its best. An Eagles' Cup victory, two straight appearances of at least in the Quarterfinals in the World Cup, and a Quarterfinal showing in the last AOCAF definitely suggests that the players listen to what he has to say and respect what he seems to understand about the game.

Assistant Manager

Age:

Keeper

1 Julius Miljeteig, Cednia Beach AFC Image
Age - 33
Sex - M
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 162 lbs
After finally making his name in Turori, Julius was handed the number one shirt last cycle and proved to be an adequate replacement for Sean Smørdal, despite not possessing the same elite level reflexes as his predecessor. A reliable shot stopped is all that the Marauders were looking for and they got exactly that last cycle, letting the former Raynor City United keeper keep his hold on the position, for now.

Defenders

4 Vårin Løvland, Mar Sara FC
Age - 28
Sex - F
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 148 lbs
As pacy as most Vanorian footballers come, tenacious as well, she is one of those rare defenders who is as comfortable with the ball at her feet as she is in defending her marks. Quick to get stuck in and throw her body at an opponent, she is perhaps a bit more reckless than a normal Vanorian defender, but her play with the Flames as been stellar and has produced the results that have given her the chance to start for the national team.

6 Ralph Winter, Kitara AA Image
Age - 23
Sex - M
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 172 lbs
A strong and versatile defender who can play both as a fullback or as a centerback when called upon as he does for his club side, a club side who just managed to bring home the Champions' League. Winter will be looking to use the competition to go from the reserve pool to be considered for the starting lineup.

2 Ulrike Kluge, SC Rinaldi
Age - 28
Sex - F
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 168 lbs
A quick and pacy defender who can sometimes get caught out by smart opposition but her raw physical skills allow her to overcome any such mistakes with the recovery speed needed to be an elite level defender. Her lack of consistency is why it has taken her so long to get into the first team.

Midfield

8 Pánfilo Veliz, FC Capri
Age: 30
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 156 lbs
The first player born in Sabine and Caddonia to make the national team, Veliz was carefully groomed to be a dynamic attacking winger coming through the Capri youth and reserve teams. That masterful ability to dribble, cross, or if needed even finish moves makes him a wonderful assist for the offensive side of the ball, but does mean he is a bit more lax when it comes to his defensive responsibilities.

7 Heike Schoß, Jinja City FC Image
Age - 23
Sex - F
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 167 lbs
A young attacking midfielder that has learned to play a little further back in order to have a chance to break into the national team rather than trying to dislodge Hawk. She is intelligent on the ball and seems to be on the upwards part of her career after joining Jinja City in the highly competitive S-FPL.

10 Laborious Hawk, Bastion Image
Age - 751
Sex - M
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 213 lbs
Words do not even begin to define his talent, his talent defines words. He was awarded one of the spots that the Vanorians have in the World Cup Hall of Fame, with it being very well deserved, as he has and continues to earn everything he has been given every single day. Hawk simply strives to be the very best footballer, captain, and teammate that there can be, with the hunger for perfection driving him forth on and off the pitch.

5 Gideon Riemann, AS Bezieres Image
Age - 23
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 184 lbs
Gideon emerged as a powerful and reliable center midfielder during the Finals, coming to play a destroyer role alongside Larsen and was able to be a highly influential impact substitute. Strong and pacy, versatile enough to play both in the center of the park as well as on the wing when called upon, he looks to be a long term starter for the Marauders as long as his club career doesn't have him fall out of favor.

3 Indra Söderström, Brinemouth Image
Age - 23
Sex - F
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 142 lbs
Thought to be one of the next great attacking wingers for the Marauders, Indra made the interesting decision to go to one of the struggling sides of the Audioslavia league. She did her best to keep them up for several seasons before they were relegated but she catapulted to one of the best teams in the world in Brinemouth on the basis of her talent showcased both for club as well as country. Still in need of a bit of refinement, she is nonetheless a very lethal player out wide for the Marauders.

Strikers

9 Jutta Palminger, age 23, FC Capri
Age - 23
Sex - F
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 172 lbs
Another product of the masterful attacking academy at Capri, Jutta started her career as just a cunny speed merchant who used her pace to get behind defenses and easily score. A late growth spurt turned her into a more well rounded player with an imposing physical presence that can both move past defenders and through the channels, but also win fights in the air when she has to.

11 Lothas Ludwig, FC Felsenkirchen 1879 Image
Age - 23
Sex - M
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 161 lbs
The meteoric rise of Ludwig has been nothing short of remarkable and now he gets a chance to start for the national team, following that of Thor Møller, and to try and help lead the line alongside Saxstrom. A more unselfish player than his predecessor and a bit more versatility, with the ability to play out on the left wing or even in the middle of the park in a pinch, Ludwig is a well rounded striker who can play provider as well as finish off opportunities. He is not a superstar in the making, he is a star now and has all the skill and highlights to prove his worthiness in the discussion as one of the best players of his generation.

Subs
12 GK Isak Helland, age 28, Aleiusia Capital Image
23 GK Viktor Sandnes, age 19, Oslograd Academy Image
15 CB Claudia Moench, age 25, Raynor City United (F)
13 LB Karoline Wellenbrink, age 23, Raynor City United (F)
17 RB/RW Gudrun Bißmeier, age 23, Crystal Fair HC Image
18 LW Jaimes Ybarra, age 28, FC Capri

SULTANATE OF OONTAZ DERT LI NG
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM

This is the twelfth time that Oontaz Dert Li Ng will be participating in the AOCAF. Oontaz got through undefeated in the group stage of the Baptism of Fire 61 but was knocked out in the round of 16 by Arioslavia. The nation is a mix of Muslims and Catholics, with the Mohammedans concentrated in the northern part of the country and the Christians living mostly in the southern islands. Despite a turbulent early history which saw both religious groups fighting constant wars and rebellions, by the time Abanhfleft came and "occupied" the nation in 1921, a general "peace" had settled between the two groups, and today both are content to consider each other as Oontazniks. Despite being a sultanate, the freedom of religion is valued by the nation, although it would be good advice to say that while the Catholics and Christians might be welcoming, even accommodating, to foreigners of strange new religions, the Muslims might not be so welcoming.

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation: Sultanate of Oontaz Dert Li Ng
Demonym: Oontaznik
Nickname: Lions of Sand and Sea
Team colors: Green and white
Style modifier: -2.0 (Defensive this time around)
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Head coach: Faris Feraoun (54 y/o, Oontaz Dert Li Ng)

STARTERS
GK: Usamah ROBERTS-INGLES 36 y/o, Botafogo de Maranao Image
Finally, after many long years of waiting, Usamah is finally the starting goalkeeper for the Lions of Sand and Sea. And just in time too, as it appears that he has finally reached the age of maturity where goalkeepers actually become a great force between the sticks and a guiding light to the rest of the team.

RB: Burhaan SIAHAYA 30 y/o, Vay Deg Eels A.F.C. Image (Copper Cuprum)

RCB: Halim GUEROUABI 30 y/o, Atletico Bed Deg Image (Copper Cuprum)
Guerouabi's main role is simply to sit in front of the goalkeeper and stop balls from getting through. Long legs and a large body help him achieve this objective easily enough for a defensive-minded team like Atletico Bed Deg and the Sultanate national football team. He can also head balls away in defense or score headers from corner kicks in offense. Also has a history of handballs, so that is one thing an opponent can use to their advantage.

LCB: Ghazi SALEM 30 y/o, General Santos FC Image

LB: Martin OPULENCIA 37 y/o, Real Mikkaleth Image (Abanhfleft)
Another new face from Ador Macaspac's new look Oontaznik team. Martin is a resolute left back who doesn't shrink away from making any challenges, even against players normally acknowledged as "untouchable" by other teams' defenses. He is content to remain at the back, defending his goal when needed, but sometimes he might be commanded to come up for an attack, and he doesn't shrink away from scoring a goal or two per season either.

DM: Burhan BOUTEFLIKA 33 y/o, Hapoel Nineveh Image
Marauder best describes Bouteflika's role in the midfield, both for NIneveh and the Sultanate. He roams around the middle of the pitch, watching and waiting for the ball to arrive anywhere near him so he can steal it off of the opposing player or at the very least allow a fellow defender to cut out the chance before it becomes dangerous. But it's easy to counter this by just playing the ball at the part of the midfield where Bouteflika is farthest away. This could open up gaps in the Sultanate's defenses.

CM: Seif DAHER 32 y/o, Gryphons Nubalochi Image
From the middle of the park, Daher can ping a pass to a flea sitting on a blade of grass somewhere inside the opposition's third. Unfortunately he has the turning radius of an oil tanker and the acceleration of a fully loaded freight train. His best use is sitting in the middle of the field, receiving the ball there and moving it on quickly. Any attempt to use him in a defensive capacity will only result in tears, cards, and penalties.

RW: Abram TUMANGGOR 31 y/o, Botafogo de Maranao Image

CAM: Mubarak ZIDANE 28 y/o, Rotor Dnistrosh Image (Pridnestrovia)

LW: WEYVERLEY Lopes da Costa 33 y/o, Tarbayog Aguilas Image
Weyverley was supposed to be one of the Sultanate's biggest footballing stars by now. Everyone's eyes were on him when he started tearing up the Fleftic Unang Liga and Premier League with Antslinngs Islands. Weyverley was too good to be playing in the second tier of Abanhfleft, and CSKA Tiraspol swiftly scooped him up in their bid to return to relevance in Pridnestrovia. Unfortunately, this was where Weyverley's attitude problems started to surface, and after getting into fights with both his teammates and the bouncers of the clubs he frequented in Tiraspol, Weyverley was soon shown the door. He's been trying to recover some of the form that he showed in Antslinngs back home in the Sultanate only to end up bouncing around from club to club.

FW: Arthur SUPRATNO 32 y/o, Malabon SC Image (Abanhfleft) (vice-captain)
Supratno has had a rollercoaster of a season. He scored the goal that won Malabon SC the Globe Cup against Schottia's Port Sebastian, but the season immediately after that he was unable to help the Ravens retain their FPL status. Despite his relegation though, Supratno has remained loyal to Malabon, and with his status as a 20-goal-per-season striker now cemented, it's only a matter of when and not if Malabon will be promoted back to the Fleftic top flight.

New Look AOCAF to be centerpiece of massive 'AOlympics' Event

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- The AOCAFs are a-changing. That much, of course, is obvious to anybody who's been paying any sort of attention to anything over the last year. With Anaia breaking off, integral AOCAF nations, like Starblaydia, Audioslavia, and a whole host of other ancients, have left to form their own tournament. The move was driven by political considerations, of course, but that means there are sporting effects. And in these sports crazed nations, that meant that these regional championships would be heavily effected.

Of course, the first effect would be that the Anaia Region would have their own tournament. Titled the CAFA Cup, they've already launched, holding their inaugaural tournament in Legalese. And what remains of Atlantian Oceania- still formidable, but no longer the unquestionably dominant force in this sport- our regional tournament will continue this Summer as well. The 64th edition- but the first in eons without a number of nations. But yet- our region is eager to show that we can take these bumps and survive this.

The World Cup was brought back to Atlantian Oceania, with Turori defeating The Holy Empire in the World Cup Final to bring the World Cup to the Vilitan Cove for the sixth time, although the first time it came to Turori. They beat us, 3-2, in the semifinals of World Cup 88, ending a wondrous run that almost saw us reach our second World Cup Final in three tournaments. But plenty of nations hungry for silverware, and eager to show that this tournament has not lost its luster despite losing some of our biggest names, are ready to head to Equestria.

They were unanimously elected as hosts of the tournament, and as frequent hosts and former back-to-back champions, the eyes of AO will be on Equestria this Summer. For a nation like Banija that has never won this tournament, the goal for this year is clear- claim that trophy. "Winning the region still matters, even if our region is now smaller." Marcus Waters said. "We've always considered this a major tournament, and that does not change because of the political situation. We've got all sorts of elite nations still in this region- nations like Valanora, Vilita & Turori, S&T, Baker Park, Sarzonia, Equestria, etc... And we still want to claim this trophy that we have not yet claimed- the ability to call ourselves champions of Atlantian Oceania."

All sorts of political reforms and rejuvenations are happening because of the Anaia split. Look at the reforms to AORDO, for instance. But we're not a political magazine- that's above our paygrade. We're focusing on sports here. Soccer, while the main sport, is not the only sport this region competes in. And so a lot of Atlantian Oceania's sporting heads, driven by the best minds in Vilita & Turori, got together and churned out a plan. A plan to this year, alongside the AOCAFs, run a celebration of Atlantian Oceania. The multiverse's longest standing sporting region. These forever bonds.

A lot of suits have made statements. The Olympic Committee of Banija had the following to say. "We are glad that everyone has agreed to run this celebration of Atlantian Oceania. Everyone can get caught up in the outside noise, but we must know this- the show must go on. Banija is an enthusiastic participant in the AOlympics, and we will bid to bring both the track & field events, as well as the lacrosse events, to Banijan shores. Banijan athletes are excited and ready, and are prepared to collect medals and trophies on behalf of their country in these regional competitions."

With 10 events plus the AOCAFs, the excitement in Banija is through the roof. The broadcasting corporation with the rights to the AOlympics events in Banija said that the whole theme meant that ratings in the country would go up for all of these events. "There is great regional pride in Banija, and we love seeing the regional sporting events." Said their spokeswoman. "When that is combined with the number of events where we have strong teams- baseball, gridiron, basketball, etc... you can expect Banija to be shooting for the stars here."

The Istria Olympic Stadium are the favorites to host the track & field events, while the Olympic Committee confirmed that if the AO Lacrosse CLassic is brought back to the country for the first time since its inaugural edition as the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational, that venues across the country would be used to host the event. The OCB said that they would focus on bringing those two events to Banija, as they quashed rumors about bidding for any other events, like the AOBS, AOBCs, and the AO Bowl, all of which would also be popular right here at home.

Can Banija finally win the AOCAFs? Can Banija establish themselves as AO's pre-eminent sporting force by taking home the most trophies at the AOlympics? We'll find out soon enough. Just know this- it's about to one hell of a Summer if you like watching these national teams.

AOCAF Cup 64 Part 1

Postby Squornshelous » Fri Jul 09, 2021 2:21 pm

Technical Sergeant Pavel Barkov was nervous.

Seated in the reconnaissance technician's seat, separated from his pilot by a bank of screens and instruments, he knew that his pilot, 1st Lieutenant Petra Glasov couldn't see his fidgeting hands or the sweat on his face that made his headset keep slipping down, but he was sure his voice was betraying him to her.

"Still no contacts on any frequency."

"Copy, keep scanning."

Major Rita Haivort, the squadron CO, had briefed them the same way she would for any mission, but there was definitely an uncomfortable feeling about this one. It didn't help matters that the political situation was still so unsettled. Colonel Arlberg remained in command of the military, as he had been since the day of the uprising. He had declined attempts by the provisional government to grant him any sort of promotion, though Barkov wasn't sure why. Holding elections as soon as possible was the goal, obviously, but in the short term, it seemed to him that it would be best for the Colonel just to take charge, and accept a greater rank. That would save all the time wasted with bickering in the provisional government, and stop the constant questioning of Arlberg's authority based on his rank. Pretty much all the top brass were in custody anyway, and those few officers in the Provisional Military Command had already said they'd defer to his command.

That was another thing that bugged Barkov though. That stupid name. They were still the Squornshelan Military, just not Imperial anymore, but people insisted on tacking "provisional" onto the front of everything these days. It was an obsession. After all, there was nothing provisional about their forces, only the government that issued them orders. The elected government was bound to be most of the same people anyway, so they ought to just drop the pretense of being caretakers, he felt. He had to admit though, that Colonel Arlberg probably knew better than he did about this kind of thing, and Arlberg was one of the main proponents who insisted that the provisional government was just that. It existed, the Colonel had explained, to organize elections as soon as was at all possible, and the keep order while performing its first task. Nothing more.

That notion seemed about to be put to the test though.

In the wee hours of that morning, they'd been awoken by the barracks shaking. Everyone's first thought was some kind of attack by the Imperial holdouts. As the shaking continued though, it became clear that this was no tremor from an explosion. It was an earthquake. News reports and videos had quickly surfaced all over the country showing the effects of the quake. It seemed to have hit everywhere, though it wasn't really all that severe. There were some dramatic videos showing bottles falling off shelves or wildly swinging light fixtures. Most structures had relatively little damage though. Barkov thought it was very strange that the quake was spread out all over the country. He knew he wasn't any kind of expert, but he was pretty sure they were supposed to be relatively isolated. The scientists interviewed in news segments also seemed confused and strangely excited. They talked about the quake having "no discernable epicenter" and a bunch of other stuff he couldn't really follow about disrupted tides and sea currents and dimensional barriers. Barkov only knew that when they took off and headed south over the sea, the Edge hadn't been there.

Every pilot and mariner in Squornshelous knew about the Edge. It was, quite simply, as far as you could go. The sea slid smoothly, waves and all, under the foot of a vast barrier that defined the edge of the Squornshelan pocket dimension, as the scientists called it. Some people talked about how beautiful it was. Barkov had always found it unsettling. There was something about the way it shifted in the corner of your eye, how you could never quite focus on it. He'd heard a lot of people try to describe it in their own way, but the closest he could come was calling it a soap bubble full of clouds. Or maybe they were inside the bubble, and everything beyond was indistinct gray mistiness.

Whatever the edge had really been, it was gone now, except to the West. Instead, they found bands of rapidly shifting cloud and turbulent shifting winds. Interference from electrical discharges within the squalls played havoc with Barkov's equipment, and he worked constantly to suppress a fear that they navigational instruments would somehow fail. That they were literally off the edge of the map with no way of returning. The empty static that he received in response to his repeated wideband broadcasts did not help him in this effort. He started up another round to distract himself.

"To anyone receiving me, this is Searchlight one-five. We are a reconnaissance flight, Squornshelan Provisional Military Command. Does anyone read me?"

Silence again. A crackle. Barkov had long ceased getting his hopes up at the random noises produced by the storm's interference.

A buzz, a murmuring hum. Barkov frowned and adjusted his instruments. Built for SIGINT in addition to visual reconnaissance, the aircraft's instrument suite had a staggering capacity to absorb transmissions, but required constant recalibration in flight as vibration from the engines interfered with their delicate settings. There. He hadn't been able to make anything out, but it was definitely a voice.

"This is Searchlight one-five, say again please we do not read you."

The ensuing silence seemed to stretch on forever.

"Searchlight one-five, the is VOIA observation post sigma three. We're reading you. Do you require assistance? You're a long way from home aren't you?"

"VOIA sigma three, Searchlight one-five, negative. We are currently two hours flight time south of our base of operations, less than 500 miles."

There was a longer pause this time, the response seemed more measured, even through the radio's distortion.

"Apologies Searchlight, we weren't aware of any Squornshelan bases in Atlantian Oceania."

"Neither am I, VOIA. We fly out of Vidar air base on the coast south of Poghrill. Do you have us on your scopes? Can you give us our current location?"

Another pause.

"Searchlight one-five, you mean to say that you are currently less than 500 miles south of Squornshelous itself?"

"Affirmative, VOIA, but we are uncertain of our location apart from that."

"Searchlight one-five, you'll have a lot of questions I'm sure, but all I can really say right now is welcome. Welcome to Atlantian Oceania."

Instead of staying local, Derizi opted to take their talents to Eura joining Revolutionaries as they look to take their career to the next level overseas. Amatopa’s first internationstatal tournament came with the Vilitan Union at the XIV Olympic Games and the youngster would earn a Gold Medal despite not appearing in any of the matches. It was a different situation during the 50th Di Bradini Cup when Amatopa started in three of Vilita & Turori’s 7 matches in route to the championship. Amatopa would also start the majority of matches for the Turori National Team during Eagle’s Cup X where Turori earned the Bronze Medal. On a Domestic level, Amatopa took over as starting goalkeeper for Revolutionaries at the age of 18 and earned Goalkeeper of the Season Honors during EuraLeague 45 after leading Revolutionaries to the Euraleague Title.

Alabonni’s flexibility would also limit their opportunities as a regular started at the top level but would still get the opportunity to enjoy success both on a regional and international level. Kit: Blue with combination livery of Euran gold and Syndicatian white. Alternative kit is the same but Syndicatian or "Revolutionaries" green colours.
Stadium: Flynn Arena, Fligsive, 96,500
Style Mod: +3

Coaching Staff

Wolcjeck Gruber - 53 - Manager - Austroslovakia
Ian Osborne - 47 - Assistant Manager - Euran Oceania Territories

The Euran Oceania Territories is a parliamentary federal dominion of Eura, formed of the Euran zone of the former Inevitable Syndicate and the Whittorian Islands. It has a population of around forty million people which is quickly rising, making it a beacon of diversity home to Syndicatians, Whittorian refugees, Euran migrants, Apoxians, Audioslavians, Samebans and many others. It has possibly the world's largest artificial crater, which dominates the landscape west of what is now a rebuilt Fligsive, the capital of this new entity. Its home stadium is the the Flynn Arena, where Eura beat Polar Islandstates 4-2 in the famous 66th World Cup final. Few would have predicted that the colours of red, blue and gold would become permanent there but its happened, and the stadium is now back in good condition after an expensive refit to return it to the 96,500 capacity it held previously.

Previously a wooden stadium, the current iteration of the Flynn Arena was rebuilt after a great fire destroyed the stadium during a game between Fligsive FC and Magnaeus City. Nowadays, it's a little more robust, having been the subject of many refurbishment projects over the years. The stadium was easily reachable on the Fligsive Metro before the violent overthrow of the Corvidae regime and the associated disaster in Fligsive. It now sports a combination of the old paint job as well as Euran blue and gold while the local club Fligsive FC are still in existence despite drawing lower crowds after the Mertagne exodus. Though they did not play in the hastily cobbled together amateur EOTLeague, they are the dominant side in the new professional EOFL.

Euran Oceania Territories formed a national football team not long after the founding of the political entity, a project conjured up by the Euran government Ministry of Sport to imbue a sense of cohesion among the diverse population of EOT. They played a series of friendlies against other "Eurasphere" sides from Endemia and Rushmore in a lengthy state subsidised tour. Their first games were defeats against Daera, Itor and the Ferguson Islands, before an unexpected 4-3 victory against Helving, despite their Euraleague star Scott Barnes scoring a hat trick.

They then entered the 50th AOCAF full of excitement despite having a mostly amateur team, including serving military personnel, but were promptly demolished in the group stages by several teams. Now, with the citizenship laws relaxed to allow the growth of the Territories, the "Underdogs" as they have come to call themselves were suddenly confident that they might be able to pull off a shock or two. Their first manager was of top class pedigree - Tolgus Tregajorran, a footballing hero in Apox who was well known on the international scene.

Tregajorran managed to persuade some former Apoxian internationals, playing in Eura and with no international allegiance following the temporary dismemberment of Apoxian professional football, to sign the relevant papers and make the surprise switch to EOT, as well as Euran's and other international exiles. After several years of bit part competition EOT competed in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time and in turn the Baptism of Fire, after the Sameban national team withdrew from the Endemian International Sporting Agreement and international football.

EOT performed poorly at the Baptism of Fire, going out at the group stage, but put on a respectable showing in their qualifying group for the 80th World Cup. Tregajorran's unexpected departure and a chaotic period followed with Rhys West as manager, who was soon sacked over an off-the-pitch indiscretion. It ended with the controversial appointment of Euran footballing legend and cult icon Skorji Oslograd halfway through World Cup 81 qualifying. Immediately applying Oslograd's "Skorjiball" approach - best summarised as an extremely aggressive and fluid attacking game interrupted sporadically by the manager doing something inappropriate - the team secured some noteworthy results but remained very much an underdog competitor reliant on an aging core within its squad.

Oslograd's dream of turning the Expats into the living embodiment of "the way of the warrior" and getting them to the World Cup achieved mixed results. He put them on the map and achieved some memorable (some might say historic) victories, beating Audioslavia and Valanora being among the highlights, and during his last two campaigns Oslograd got the Expats playing their best World Cup qualifying football to date. Most importantly Oslograd played a huge role in strengthening the domestic game and creating the first professional league in the territories since the days of Mertagne. But qualification was never quite achieved despite six full attempts, and his scandalous antics frequently landed the EOFF in hot water with other countries and international footballing authorities. Eventually he dramatically departed to take up the Eura job after their bewildering failure to qualify for World Cup 87, leaving chaos behind him but arguably a strong legacy too.

EOFF chiefs were caught off guard by Oslograd's impromptu departure, and were forced to opt for a 52 year old Wolcjeck Gruber as a replacement. Gruber was the most talented and well known player to come out of Austroslovakia, Eura's western neighbour, and enjoyed a successful Gold League career with Whitepill and Brigham. Its been thirteen years since his retirement as a player and in that time Gruber hasn't done much, other than managing in Euran non-league and taking up a head coach position at Oslograd Academy. Rumour has it the old boss put in a word for Gruber, who was then appointed by a unanimous vote of the EOFF board. He requested Expat and close friend Ian Osborne be appointed his assistant, another Oslograd Academy staff member and Euran-born Expat. Expectations are likely to be high for Gruber and Osborne; although the Expats don't have some of the experienced pre-formation veterans Oslograd had when he started, they have much more depth and a number of young prospects. Gruber has a tough act to follow and did not start well with a poor performance at the AOCAF, but his side improved their form in World Cup qualifiers.

June 15, Timiocato.

It was one of those typical, oppressively warm, midsummer late evenings in the Pacitalian capital, where the humidity was almost visibly suspended in the air, and no breeze was coming off the warm seas to the west of the city. No amount of ventilation from open windows and balcony doors could help with circulating the punishing, tepid mass weighing down the city.

The only redeeming qualities of the night were the massive yellow moon hanging low in a deep-purple southern sky, the monotonic white noise of Meccona crickets, and the low whir of road noise from cars driving up and down the street nearby.

Narciso Pennachetti sat on a cushy, upholstered sofa in his living room, looking out over the Capitoline hills of Timiocato. Condensation slowly dripped down the highball glass in his right hand, filled with two large ice cubes and a generous "three-finger" pour of Benatar bourbon. The faint tick-tock coming from the clock over the fireplace mantle threatened to put him into a trance, but moments later, he was yanked out of his pre-hypnotic state by the aggressive vibration of his mobile on the table next to him. Startled, he nearly dropped the slippery glass on the carpet, but recovered and set it down gently on the glass insert next to the lamp.

He wiped his brow reflexively and squinted at the smartphone's bright screen — numero n'identificare fà. Unknown number. He glanced up at the clock on the mantle. Approaching ten-thirty.

His brow furrowed. Who is calling at this hour?

He clicked the side button on the foxPhone and chucked it aside, going back to nursing his glass of Fire and Ice.

The screen dimmed, and then almost instantly lit up again, the buzzing resuming.

Irritated, he swiped across the screen to answer. "What? Who is this?"

"Ciso?"

His eyes widened, recognizing the voice on the other end immediately. "Ambrosino..." He straightened himself up like he’d been zapped by an electric socket.

It was the voice of former Blue Foxes star striker and all-time leading scorer Ambrosino Giurimano, retired from professional football for over a decade, and now, a member of Pacitalia's parliament for the governing Pacitalian Social Democratic Congress. In the previous term, Giurimano had been a high-profile member of Prime Minister Damián Moya's cabinet as MInister for Sport, but found himself sacked and now on the back benches.

However, Giurimano still held some influence and was now the chair of the parliamentary committee for Sport, Athletics and Healthy Communities. And there would be a good reason for him to call the former head coach of the national team this late in the evening.

Pennachetti knew that politicians had been debating whether or not to restore funding to Pacitalia's national football team programs. The Blue Foxes once struck fear into the hearts of their opponents, dominating regional competition for years. But they'd been out of international competition since the spring of 2013. After winning their tenth title in AOCAF Cup 40 — a record that still stands — the former government unexpectedly eliminated nearly all funding for international sport competitions as part of budget cuts, and that would be the last time the Foxes would compete for glory.

Pacitalian football, at a time looked upon with great respect for its accomplishments and its development of talented players, would be immediately hamstrung, limited to occasional participation in friendly matches, a diminishment so severe it had players threatening to switch flags simply for the ability to play for nations who still took competitive football seriously.

"I thought you might want to know ahead of time. I just got out of an in camera session on the sport committee. We've reached a deal to fund competitive sport again, including the Foxes. They'll be back in AOCAF again."

Pennachetti jumped off the couch, once again nearly spilling his drink all over the floor. "Holy shit."

"Yeah. I can't believe it either, when you think about how long this took and how much work was involved on this. But... I don't want to jinx it. The good news is there was pretty widespread consensus that restoring national team sport programs was a way to provide everyone with a sense of normalcy after the pandemic ends."

The pandemic, Pennachetti thought to himself, instantly transported back in time six months, lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to a ventilator at the height of a third wave of cases a few weeks before Christmas. Many people in his situation weren't so lucky. Those who got as sick from COVID-19 as Pennachetti had... most of them didn't make it. Over a hundred thousand dead.

"Anyway," Giurimano said. "This is an opportunity for you to get back to normal too."

"What do you mean?" Pennachetti replied, though he already suspected where this conversation was headed.

"I think you should speak to the FGCP about the manager position." Giurimano paused deliberately, knowing those words needed a few extra seconds to sink in. "Look, Ciso. This team is going to be extremely green and they're going to need some leadership, from someone who's been there, who's won titles. Don't be stubborn. Think about it if you need to, but I'm serious. Put your name in. And do it before the Federation starts the selection process. The next AOCAF Cup is just a month or so away."

He hung up before Pennachetti could get a word in.

June 16, Timiocato.

Pennachetti fumbled with his tie, and his somewhat crumpled, but well-fitting, Franconian silk suit. His laptop computer was perched on the kitchen table, videoconferencing software open and ready to go, awaiting a call with the newly installed president of the Federazione Giocare di Calcio Pacitaliana, or FGCP, the government's newly formed successor governing body for association football in the country. Desiring a fresh start, national lawmakers had disbanded the old FdFP as part of the all-party agreement to restore funding, and reconstituted the body with a new name and new leadership.

Federico Murio Serra was a short, wiry man, with longish, grey, slicked-back hair that was going white around the temples. His diminutive frame was more than compensated for by his intimidating glances from behind round, tortoise-shell glasses. Every finger had a thick metal ring of some sort on it, complemented by chunky cuff links and a shiny pewter piece on the lapel of his suit jacket. A textbook upper-class man in his fifties and a stark contrast to the rather disheveled football manager he was about to see on the other end of the video chat.

Murio Serra, his name revealing his aristocratic heritage, was a businessman and industrialist in his own right, and the former owner of UCF Pantheon Capitale, one of Pacitalia's top-flight league football clubs. He had been tasked with leading the new body and fielding a new Blue Foxes side for the first time in twenty-four competitive cycles. One of the first things on the list would be the search for a manager, who could then themselves lead the search for talent to compile a starting eleven.

Not only that, they were running on borrowed time — any team would need to be fully vaccinated and cleared to travel on an exception basis in the event that Pacitalian borders weren't yet reopened. As of now Timiocato was hinting a return to normal might be just four weeks out.

Murio Serra thought about who might be on the new starting XI. Many of the legendary names of tournaments past were now retired or too long in the tooth to be a serious choice — Mascagnano, Vunghiasso, Demi, Semih Mansur, Berardi, da Scupeta — so a revamped Foxes squad was going to look somewhat foreign to its own fans. It was going to be a tough task and he knew any chance of success, no matter how low the expectations were to be set, would come from having experience patrolling the manager's box.

So it was an understatement to say Murio Serra felt relief at the sight of an email literally dropping in his lap, the night before a scheduled meeting at which the Federation was to start searching for potential managers for the national team. Narciso Pennachetti sending an email to him at nearly midnight, requesting a meeting the next morning to discuss a posting that wasn't even publicly announced yet? The ink not even dry on the funding agreement? He smirked at the timing, immediately aware that the coach was a little too obviously tipped off by a certain former player now serving as a lawmaker in parliament.

But he wasn't going to be one to complain. If this were to be a relatively painless search for a manager, gifts like these were going to be needed.

Murio Serra pressed the dial button on the videoconferencing app, and, after a few seconds, the call connected. Not ten minutes later, the call came to an end.

He reached over and tapped the preset on the phone to dial through to his secretary. "Claudia, cancel the search meeting at eleven. Tell them we've got our man."

That was easy.

On the other end, Pennachetti poured himself another three fingers of bourbon and flopped onto the couch. Twenty-four hours ago he was just an unemployed football manager with no job prospects and a borderline drinking problem. Okay, that last part is probably still true, he mused ruefully.

Despite his subconscious efforts to self-sabotage the interview, he ended up with his old job back... and a purpose. Rebuild the Foxes. But part of him was still trapped in a state of utter bewilderment.

"I must be going crazy," he said out loud. He knocked back the bourbon in one gulp and rather unsteadily got to his feet. It was time to make some calls.

The Blue Foxes return to international football competition for the first time in over twenty-four cycles — an eight-year hiatus. The national team, despite its long absence, continues to hold the all-time record number of titles won at 10, a level of achievement that remains unmatched in the AOCAF Cup and in any other senior international association football competition. Though the recently returned Foxes squad will need to work hard to prove it is anywhere near the calibre and class of its predecessors, it may find success easier to reach, with the pressure and expectations of a title, in their first tournament back, firmly off its shoulders. Pacitalia enters AOCAF Cup 64 ranked thirty-fourth in Atlantian Oceania, a far cry from the "golden age" when the Blue Foxes were comfortably ensconced within the top three for many years. Depending on how Sunday's group draw turns out, this iteration of the national team will most likely be pleased with any result better than simply exiting at the end of the group stage.

Most likely starting eleven

Names displayed are as shown on back of player shirts

Default formations: 4-2-3-1 (primary), 5-2-2-1 (secondary)
Style modifier: -1 defensive
Opponent permissions: Make substitutions, choose scorers, delegate yellow and red cards, assign injuries within reason

Manager: Narciso Pennachetti
Pennachetti returns to the same role he held in the later years of Pacitalia's period of dominance. The Federation is hopeful that Pennachetti, and his returning assistants, Tiberio Dovolani and Paolmarco Sanvezzo, can work their magic on this young Foxes side eager to stamp its name in the history books. Pennachetti's other managing experience over his 25-plus-year career was with Pacitalian clubs FC Nero Sapuntoli, FC Cavalieri Saronni, and FC Segadors Bergamo, Scandonian powerhouse Voyageurs Korendam, and the Pacitalian under-21 men's national side. His previous stint as Blue Foxes manager was in AOCAF Cups 35 through 38, leading them to two back-to-back titles in Cups 36 and 37. Pennachetti will be returning to a slightly defensive approach, eschewing his unconventional 2-3-2-3 in favour of the more traditional 4-2-3-1 deployment that Pacitalians are accustomed to seeing.

The squad

** Denotes likeliest starter per position
C Denotes team captain
† Denotes reserve player or recent national call-up not officially named to the 23-man squad
(NB: only notable reserves and call-ups will have a short bio)

Forwards

** 11 Gianmarco Zolà (age 25), 27 caps, 11 goals
Zolà is not the first member of his family to play for his country at an international competition. Avid international football fans will recall Gianmarco's uncle Abro as the long-time starting keeper for the Blue Foxes, backstopping the Pacitalian side to its first championships. Zolà is a ballhawk whose speed and knack for getting space from defenders may frustrate opponents on the counterattack.

15 Damone Rosso (age 25), 24 caps, 7 goals
Previously the most common starting forward in the Blue Foxes' 4-2-3-1 formations, Rosso has found himself somewhat usurped by the more talented Zolà in the last couple of years. Known for trademark brilliant strikes from outside the penalty area at the club level that have made him a fan favourite, Rosso has struggled to translate that form to the international arena.

12 Vincenzo Corvidasso (age 21), 11 caps, 3 goals
A relatively recent addition to the national side for Pacitalia, Corvidasso has shown quite a lot of promise as a versatile, two-way striker who can create chances in front of goal. All three of his international goals to date have been off headers. If Pacitalia struggles early, manager Pennachetti may lean on Corvidasso as a frequent substitute.

21 Xabi Ferrán (age 30), 88 caps, 24 goals
Xabi has been a hit-or-miss choice for several years with questions about his fitness as early as 2012. His most noticeable decline in form came after the Foxes' last title in AOCAF Cup 40. He had the good fortune of studying under all-time leading Pacitalian scorer Ambrosino Giurimano, but has been eclipsed by younger upstarts like Zolà and Rosso. He was officially demoted off the 23-man squad in 2019 and has only appeared since on occasional call-ups.

Attacking midfielders

** 9 Guillermo (Memo) Sánchez (age 23), 51 caps, 14 goals
Memo's placement up the left side for the Blue Foxes will be designed to take advantage of the young Marquerian's arcing left-footed crosses into the box. Sánchez is also the team's most proficient corner taker from both sides of goal and should be able to reliably provide accurate deliveries near goal. Football experts have often remarked on the similarities in chemistry between Mau and Memo to the partnership between former national stars Michelangelo Mascagnano and Andolfabio Vunghiasso.

** 10 Mau Camp i Armengol (age 22), 35 caps, 24 goals
Unquestionably the keystone of the Pacitalian side, Mau has already cemented his place as the next standard-bearer of the Blue Foxes. Despite only being 22, he has led Il Premerato in scoring for three straight seasons, coming second in his first season. The Empordian is fresh off a league title with his club 1865 Fontevella. He is the quarterback of the national team, able to cover wide swathes of the mid-pitch and coordinate both the attacking and defending strategy.

** 8 Dario Formetti (age 26), 47 caps, 11 goals
The most senior of the three most likely starting front midfielders, Formetti is very much a physical presence, tall and very muscular. Somewhat of the national side's playboy, Formetti has gotten as much attention during matches for his rough tackling as he has off the pitch with his social media, full of shirtless photos and workout tips, alongside videos of him partying and womanizing. There is, however, no doubt, that he's undeniably talented and works extremely hard to keep his place in the starting XI.

16 Cristián Piqué (age 32), 88 caps, 30 goals
One of the holdovers from the starting XI from AOCAF Cup 40, Piqué has spent equal time in the starting eleven and on the bench as a substitute in recent years as he ages. He still retains much of the speed and fitness of his younger years, and manager Pennachetti is still a big fan of Piqué's intelligent, patient passing and dribbling skills. He will be looking to Piqué to provide mentorship and calm as the younger stars dip a first toe in the figurative waters of the tournament.

20 Benjamín Madero (age 28), 58 caps, 9 goals
Madero had a brief spell in the starting eleven through the mid-2010s, though the entirety of that time was in meaningless matches at the beginning of the "Dark Ages", when the Pacitalian government eliminated funding for international competitive sport programs. As a result, Madero is largely seen as untested at the international level and could see more playing time than expected, especially if hopes for progression out of the group stage fade early.

26 Marcangelo Bettero (age 27), 31 caps, 7 goals
Bettero is a chippy midfielder who has a similar boundary-pushing style to Formetti. His "mind game" style of play, annoying opponents with messy tackling and vulgarities, often earns him cautions or yellows from the referee, and this undisciplined style does not mesh well with his manager's overall strategy.

28 Damiano Arzurossi (age 20), 18 caps, 10 goals
Another promising midfield talent with high potential, football watchers are generally in agreement that a more permanent place in the starting XI is an inevitability. Damiano has been an offensive factory for the Blue Foxes in his 18 appearances, with a goals-per-match ratio almost on par with superstar teammate Mau. Like Madero, though for different reasons, Pennachetti may give him above-average minutes and an opportunity to shine.

25 Robel Bordeianu (age 21), 10 caps, 1 goal

Defensive midfielders

** 6 Nikolaos Armaou (age 24), 52 caps, 16 goals
As the only member of the Greco-Pacitalian community in the starting eleven, Armaou is a source of immense pride among the estimated 35 million Pacitalians of Greek descent. Armaou is often the unsung workhorse of the Pacitalian side, but with a commendable level of goal-scoring in his own right. He has an innate ability to get under balls delivered into the box off corners and free kicks and this sixth sense should be of great use to the Blue Foxes.

** 7 Aber Garza (age 29), 74 caps, 21 goals
Anchoring the back-right midfield, Garza is equally as resolute as his left-side counterpart Armaou, often chided as a "stick in the mud" for his ability to stay on his feet and pull off gravity-defying loops around opposing players. Garza relies on a combination of below-average height and a stocky build to centre himself during high-intensity play, providing a first line of defence for the Blue Foxes up the right flank.

14 Ando Figarache (age 22), 17 caps, 2 goals

24 Marco Scarruffo (age 21), 10 caps

Fullbacks

** C 2 Hermès Adiarche (age 33), 106 caps, 5 goals
One of the greatest fullbacks in Pacitalian history, Adiarche has captained the Blue Foxes since 2017. He is arguably the heart and soul of the side, the second-most capped player behind his goalkeeper and a steady presence on the back line. Pennachetti will lean heavily on Adiarche's leadership and direction in the Pacitalian half of the pitch.

** 4 Kiko Rodríguez (age 22), 29 caps, 2 goals
The most promising defensive talent of the next generation in Pacitalia, Kiko may very well be the heir to the back-line throne. Praised for his game maturity and his calm, level approach, Kiko almost never shows panic or concern even during bad stretches of play, earning himself the nickname "the serious one" from his teammates at the club level. He is regarded as a generational centre back and will likely see a career-defining moment or two at AOCAF Cup 64.

** 3 Mauro Girometta (age 27), 49 caps, 3 goals
Girometta was a standout performer both in university football and for the national under-21 squad but had a rough transition to senior international competition, often at odds with managers and goalkeepers during defensive breakdowns. His continued place in the starting eleven was seen to be at risk toward the late 2010s but he has seen a resurrection of sorts in the past 18 months and is now a reliable fixture of the first team.

** 5 Aurelio Seriesta (age 35), 96 caps, 6 goals
Opposite Adiarche at right-back is the other "anchor" of the defensive back four and a man just as legendary a name in football lore. Seriesta has been part of seven of the ten championship winning teams Pacitalia has fielded, dating back to AOCAF Cup 30. He has been just as much a fixture in league competition with a long, storied career at Astograthian club Echegoyan FC before returning to Foringana to captain the Scandonian club Ravens Poortendam.

18 Angelos Gavridis (age 24), 28 caps, 2 goals
Injury-prone Gavridis has battled numerous calf and hamstring problems and may have otherwise seen more playing time in the tournament in place of the aging Seriesta or the unpredictable Girometta. But Pennachetti may not be willing to chance it for Gavridis' sake, especially as the FC Nero Sapuntoli centre back has enjoyed a relatively fit stretch of his career in recent months.

17 Drağan Mihaiescu (age 25), 32 caps, 1 goal
Often as unpredictable as Girometta and as temperamental as Bettero, Mihaiescu's playing time will likely be limited as Pennachetti makes the back four the anchor of his team and installs players with experience and upon whom he's confident he can rely. In a pinch, Mihaiescu's brilliantly clean tackling skills may come in handy.

29 Josep Mora (age 29), 50 caps, 6 goals
The lanky, agile Empordian is the substitute fullback most likely to see playing time — or even start for the Blue Foxes at some point. Mora has been biding his time largely on the bench as he usually slots in most effectively on the left wing, a position consistently occupied by his captain. He has not been as effective down the middle, or the opposite side of the pitch, so if Adiarche remains healthy, the only other plausible option for Mora to slot into would be in place of Armaou in midfield.

19 Donatello Ferragni (age 19), 2 caps

23 Taddeo Marzonero (age 20), 5 caps, 1 goal

30 Balo Braga de Souza (age 21), 11 caps, 1 goal

31 Ilyas Albayrak (age 21), 6 caps

32 Agustín Lardizábal (age 20), 8 caps, 1 goal

Goalkeepers

** 2 Ander Bera (age 31), 121 caps
The most-capped player in Pacitalian history, Bera will make his 122nd career appearance in the starting XI in the first group-stage match at AOCAF Cup 64. That is more caps than famed striker Ambrosino Giurimano, more than Giurimano's predecessor Veranace d'Amantano — simply put, more than anyone who has ever donned Blue Fox blue. A ruthless penalty killer with phenomenal goal IQ, Bera serves as alternate captain to Adiarche. He could be the difference-maker in tight matches, as the Foxes rely on his record 102 league and 54 international career clean sheets.

22 Emin Demirtas (age 33), 37 caps
The other half of Pacitalia's reliable pair of keepers has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his counterpart Bera for the better part of the last decade. While Bera has earned more caps and is the unquestionable starter, Demirtas' time in net for his country is nothing to laugh at. The passionate Demirtas is a fan favourite who is already tapped for increased playing time, as Pennachetti has already named him to start in the Foxes' final pre-tournament tune-up, a friendly against Baker Park.

27 Paolo Corasetto (age 22), 5 caps

Location: Board Room, FAC Headquarters, 333 State Street, downtown Belle Haven
Participants: Cheryl Livingston, FAC Chairwoman; Chris Ralston, Vice-Chair & President; Allison LaFleur, General Secretary & Executive VP; David Carlson, Executive Director & VP: Trevor Richmond, Sporting Director & VP; Jennifer Prescott, NT Manager & Director of Technical Development; Liam Sullivan, Under 21 Manager & Director of Player Development.

State Street has been the address for the Football Association of the Commonwealth since 1911, although it was originally 3 blocks south of the current premises; 92 State Street has been erased from history as the Museum of Contemporary Art takes up the entire block today, but it's still widely recognized as referencing the FAC hierarchy in general use. The entire 19th floor is leased, and building's design means that there are spectacular views in nearly every direction.

The minutes of the meeting would show that this was the first time in 17 months that a majority of the Executive Board were present for a meeting (Bob Vernon, Team Doctor; David Hulme, Chief Physio; and Sasha Henderson, PR/Media were the other three directors part of the EB, but they almost never appeared unless a specific issue was on hand) and none of the other 17 members of the Association Board were present, as they generally only gathered quarterly.

On this Wednesday mid morning, there were no shortage of topics to discuss among the National Team brain trust.
It's been referenced often in the past, Ally LeFleur is the mastermind of how the FAC operates in the NS/mixed-gender Era; both in the business and governing aspects of the body, she is widely hailed across all constituencies as the architect of the FAC's current stature.

Livingston and Ralston made a few brief remarks, then turned things over to Ally.
"Topic one. Equestria operational sites? Jen?

"We've only ever gone there and gotten our brains bashed in. New Cloudsdale? would they let us stay there?" (laughter)
"I'll mark that as Manehattan." (more laughter) Who's gonna be in charge?"

"I really didn't want to do it, but Liam had the women at JRC, so maybe we can see if the men will respond to a feminine touch." (more laughter)

"Anddd...Dave, that's your cue." (laughter continues)

"Contracts. Kristen (Sawyer)?" The others express agreement. "Jen, where is Don at in his thinking?"
Don Alverrez was a 20+ year coach for the national team setup, currently working as Prescott's #2 in the Technical Department; he was the last of the 'old guard' from before Carlson's tenure, well respected & liked by everyone.
"I'm fairly sure that he wants to wait until Hailey (Reinhart-Zavaros) comes back (from maternity leave that began after the end of WC88 qualifying) before deciding on retiring; she and Ryan (her husband) are Don's protege's basically, I think he'd like to see one or the either succeed him."

"Chris (LaRue, assistant manager for the U18/21 squads)?" Again, everyone made positive noises about retaining him. The last name came up. "Matt (Villareal)? Have we had any feedback from CASE about their evaluation of him?"
"I don't think there's been any sense of dissatisfaction, but I think we'd need to talk to Stephanie (Sweeney, the former Cassadaiguan NT Manager who was now President of the governing body) and Brittany (Byers, the current Dagan boss) for some more insight." Trevor Richmond was Villareal's biggest supporter, and he wanted his former captain to make progress in the NT program, but he also believed that 3-5 years in club coaching might be better than a higher profile role in the youth development scheme.

"I'm in favor of a new contract, but I think he still needs a bit more...seasoning." Prescott had taken Villareal as a staff coach for AOCAF 62, and had a high opinion of his potential, but she still felt he needed to improve his ability to teach & communicate with players who were not at the same ability level that the former Learfield midfielder had achieved.

The topic list would push the meeting into the early lunchtime window (usually the 30 minutes either side of noon in Baker Park) but everything that needed attention ahead of the AOCAF was covered and concluded; as the only nation post-Foxchester that would be returning among the semi-finalists from the 63rd edition, and counting their victory in the tournament previous to that, they were the "reigning" AO 'holders', for what that was worth.
The decision to permanently incorporate the orange & blue star representing the AOCAF 62 win onto the official NT badge, as worn on the kit at the Jenna Raven Cup will be put to a vote of the full council at the General Conference in Fairport next month.

SIXTY-FOURTH AOCAF CHAMPIONSHIP

Gold medalists, Games of the V Olympiad.
Six-time WC qualifiers (51-56). QF at WC51.
Champions of 2nd Wonder Cup, Moon Bracket.
Hosts of WC55, CoH 44 and 46, BoF 72, AOCAF 31.
Current world ranking: Please don't ask
All time peak world ranking: 11th (post WC-53 qualifying).
AO 4 LIFE, not just until there's a secret cabal to join.

Trigram: DEL | Nickname: Phoenixes | Style Modifier: +5

RP permissions: Yes, but be respectful and TG/DM if you're not sure or have ideas.

We're here, ready to soar from the depths of mediocrity, maybe even all the way to a knockout stage. Or who knows? All the semifinal and final chokers gave AO the double bird; plenty of room for a deep run.

Team Overview: Tactically, the Phoenixes are heavily offensive-minded, utilising a 3-5-2 and relying on individual skill in the middle and up front. Goalkeepers and defenders are perfectly capable, but they're going to have to be ready to make plays and bail out failed attacks. There is a bias towards action and chance instead of possession, and an inclination towards taking defensive risks to generate counterattack opportunities. Additionally, it is expected that the midfielders will be fully active on both ends of the field, employing manpower to have advantages in both the offensive and defense zones rather than relying on positioning. Manager Johannes Detmer will frequently make substitutions at midfield, even as early as the start of the second half, to give both the starters and substitutes an opportunity to work at a higher rate for a shorter period of time.

Mentally, the new philosophy of this team is "talk shit, play hard, shake hands". This team will engage in the psychological warfare of the game; they will not play dirty or recklessly, but they will make the game chippy, say things to get in their opponents' heads. But it's just for the contest itself; after the game - win, lose, or draw - all of that is done, and the Phoenixes will show respect at the final whistle. Despite their experience, this team will suffer from the lack of continuity in international play. There is a tendency for the players to start stronger than they finish, often looking to simply hold on at the end of games.

Full Roster

Manager: Johannes Detmer, 79, Catherina FC
Assistant Manager: Tyler Tracy, 52
Technical Director: Joe Jamin, 47
Strength & Conditioning Coach: Michalela Mikkel, 29
Goalkeeper Coach: George Ross, 28 - The former UFL champion with Catherina FC, current star at Algolia AC in the Squornshelan Remnant States, and national team mainstay will serve as a non-playing goalkeeper coach for this regional tournament. The less experienced keepers will get a chance to see more game action while benefiting from Ross' wealth of experience.

Notes:
  • As stated above, Detmer will frequently expect midfielders to work their hardest for 45 minutes, then be substituted for someone else. Romeijn and Martin are more likely to go for the full 90 minutes, and Detmer will always hold on to one or two substitutions if another replacement is needed elsewhere.
  • Ingram is most likely to take corner kicks, although it doesn't really matter since this team is not particularly tall and represents less of an aerial threat than years past. If Delaclava trails and needs goals in the later stages, Meñica will take corners instead.
  • Lindblad will be the one to take free kicks if there is a direct scoring opportunity; Meñica for longer range and placement; Meñica or Ingram if looking for a volley/header in the box.
  • For penalties, use the first player on this list who is still in the game: Ingram, Meyer, Lindblad, Romeijn.
