Veganism and vegetarianism in your nation.

Postby Gupta Bharat » Tue Jun 29, 2021 10:14 pm

What percentage of your population would you say is vegan and/or vegetarian? Or pescatarian, for that matter?

50% is vegetarian, 35% is pescatarian, and 10% is vegan. Only about 5% of my population consumes land animals of any kind. Most of these are Muslims who adhere to a strict halal diet, Jews who are predominantly kosher, Parsees, Sikhs, and Christians. Most of our population is Hindu, and even among those who are not, many Buddhists and Jains refuse to consume flesh as well.

Predominantly Hindu nation with several small religious minority sects for diversity's sake. Still united and ruled by the Gupta dynasty.

Despite the multiversal perception, we are omnivorous, though a herbivorous diet is seeing a resurgence in popularity, and it's not like it was totally new, sometimes peasants would graze and forage in lean times, from whatever land they had or in the wilds. Meat was more of a big deal then, but grains and bread were always considered essential for all beings.

The only beings that are not vegetarian or vegan are griffons since they are obligate carnivores, due to their feline bodies. Most Auzkhians say they can eat a little less meat, though we still eat some, it is possible for pony Auzkhians to be either.

It is estimated that about 7% of all people here follow a strictly herbivorous diet, most of them are due to long held traditions, and about 20% are flexible and occasionally eat some meat, but more and more are part of the rising vegetarian movement that brought in new interest in plant based meat called Ersatzfleisch or Pflanzersatzfleisch.

Roughly 24% of Crossoverians are vegetarian, and 12% are vegan. Rates of vegetarianism are higher in rural areas than in urban areas, as it is harder to find meat. Farmers usually feast on rice and bread.

An estimate about 14% are Vegetarian, 7% are Vegans and 5% are Pescatarian. Veganism/Vegetarianism is actually not that common here as the common food consumption is meat as well as it is one of the common cuisines in the Kingdom. Majority of the population is Omnivorous but there are significant people who prefer going green and eat only fish. There is, however, certain days which forbids the consumption of meat. Days like Holy days or important religious holidays are when all meat consumption is ground to a halt.

The Prut Meritocracy is a predominantly Heliandist nation; the traditional diet is two days meat, two days vegetables, two days fish, one day indulging. This varies considerably regionally, but is consistently observed by most folk, religious or not, mostly out of habit. Many don't interpret the dietary requirements too literally, e.g. "meat" can just be a hearty stew with some meat added for flavour (very popular in central Veleslavia, the Serras of Hesperia, and the Ash Alps region of Neo Prutenia), "fish" is often liberally interpreted as seafood in general, e.g. crab dishes in eastern Neo Prutenia, litoral Mag Mell, and Raion no kuni, or mussels and prawns (very popular in Wrangelborg, Raion no kuni, and Mag Mell). Practically speaking most of the population is vegetarian about 25% to 30% of the time.

A reasonable assumption would be that about 12% of the population is permanently vegetarian. Veganism on the other hand would be exceptionally rare, as many animal products are very popular and port of traditional and fusion cuisine, e.g. cheese and other dairy products, honey, certain sweets and desserts with milk and eggs as main Ingrediens, etc.

Pescatarians aren't accounted for, since all regions of the Prut Meritocracy are coastal to some extent, or have large interior rivers and riparian cuisines; about 20% of the population could theoretically be classified as pescatarian, but mostly out of practical reasons rather than any conviction, e.g. it's much easier, cheaper, and more convenient to eat fish in a rural coastal village rather than beef.

On a day-to-day basis, veganism is absolutely mandatory in Bunkaiia. Both civil wars and the first, second, and third wars of independence were all deeply connected to Bunkaiia's long-standing anti-slavery, anti-marriage, and anti-animal cruelty dietary traditions. Therefore, all restaurants and markets are by the mandate of the national constitution required to be vegan.

Thousands of people have died on both sides, because of the Christian and Muslim demand for seafood in a nation that was partially funded by garden-loving proto-socialists and environmentally-conscious Persian Mazdakite refugees.

The Mazdakites fled 6th century Persia after the Khosrow the Usurper killed his older brother and rightful heir Šahanša Kaïos, who was a dutiful Mazdakite. The Mazdakites fled from Persia and a small group led a Khorram - possibly Mazdak's widow settled on the sparsely-populated tradepost-island of Bunkaiia. There they intermixed with the warrior queen leader of the native Austronesian Safiloavans and the foundation was born. Interestingly, the Safiloavans had their own taboos that easily contributed to the quick adoption of the Mazdakite faith.

Over the centuries, Yemeni and Somali Jews, runaway Swahili slaves, and Tulu-speaking mendicants, and merchant Jains from Southern India all settled and claimed their own portion of the island, more or less. Due to the wide religious differences, a compromise was reached that each group had to abide by certain democratically chosen ground rules that would apply to all four main religious groups.

Judaism's kashrut laws, Jainism's adherence to ahimsa, the early adoption and general acceptance toward fadi/fady (taboos) of the Malagassic Safiloavans meant that the Mazdakites' demand for a fiercely strict and island-wide adoption of a plant-based diet was a relatively easy sell.

However, there are a few festivals where the consumption of certain biological animals is not only permitted but even celebrated, namely: the caterpillar & larvae festival, the locust festival, the cicada festival, the honey festival, the bivalve festival, the crustacean festival, and the sea cucumber festival. It is understood by anthropologists that at least some of these festivals began as a response to an over-abundance of crop pests. Non-vegan tourists and visitors, children under age 12, and pregnant and breast-feeding women are notably not permitted to joining in the festivities.

Controversy: As soon as a child turns 12, they receive a small land for their personal purpose. Normally this is used as either a home or as a small personal farm or garden. However, the Wild Bunkaiian Quail has been known to lay unfertilized eggs in some of these garden-farms. The monk-ruled Supreme Court recently has acknowledged that these eggs are permitted for (and only for) personal consumption (but in private). So the actual number of orthodox "vegans" in the country is currently unknown and differs greatly depending on which mostly unknown variables you include.

We only intentionally inflict vegetarianism on criminals convicted of misdemeanor crimes, and veganism for those rare examples of felony convicts. Otherwise, we record perhaps 10% of the population as voluntarily vegetarian, and only 1% as willingly vegan. It’s kinda viewed as a bit fascist, since we are taught in school that Hitler was also a vegetarian.

The other 89% of our population are varying degrees of omnivore, including pescatarian.

While meat, dairy, and the fishes of the sea have traditionally featured prominently in the Emnian diet, vegetarianism and veganism have experienced rapid growth in recent decades. In 2018, a survey by the Emnian University found that as many as 5.1% of Emnians identified as vegetarians, with another 3.5% identifying as vegans. A further 10% described themselves as some form of "flexitarian", meaning that they still consumed some meat and dairy, but made some conscious effort to minimise either the amount in their diet or the impact of their consumption.

Less than 10% of Australics self-identity as vegetarian, whilst less than 5% self-identity as vegans. Statistically, the A.S.I. also recognises people who only consume non-mammal meat/products (i.e. pescatarians) as a single group comprising less than 2% of the population.

Many common and traditional dishes in Australia are meat-based. The most commonly consumed meats are beef, lamb, kangaroo, and poultry. Traditional indigenous Bush Tucker features native meats such as kangaroo, but also those such as crocodile, emu, and grubs. Meat also features prominently in Australic street/convenience foods, with meat pies, pasties, and sausage rolls - not to mention bbq sausages - a ubiquitous sight at lunchtime and at public events, whilst Turkic kebabs are one of the most popular cultural imports to make an appearance at dinner time.

Federal dietary guidelines encourage the consumption of lean meats and animal products such as milk and eggs as an important part of a balanced diet. The consumption of fish is also encouraged.

Animal farming in Australia is strictly regulated to ensure the well-being of livestock. Factory farming and other capitalistic/torturous forms of farming are not practiced, with most farms operated like other national industries - collectively, ethically, and sustainably. Most animals used for meat are farmed either free-range or hunted wild (as to balance native populations) whilst those used to produce by-products (i.e. milk, eggs, honey) are typically free-range or sourced from urban farming (many families may keep their own chickens, or help manage a communal apiary, for example). All meat products sold must attain a halal certification (if applicable) and be sourced through accredited butchers/fishmongers - this and other regulations regarding animal farming and fishing are overseen by specialist committees within the state-level natural resource syndicates. Australia does not participate in the live export of animals intended for meat production.

The farming of pigs has decreased greatly in past decades to the point that pork has become disfavoured as a meat - similarly to horse meat. Coupled with the restriction of the use of hormones and other drugs on farm animals, pigs are more common as pets. Cattle farming has also decreased in favour of native animals - just as native crops have gained ground against introduced crops - but still remains the most common meat, as well as the nation's primary source of animal milk (followed by goat).

There is a vocal minority of citizens who oppose the use of animals as or for the production of food, but without the influence of capitalism to incentivise unethical farming practices and with the transparent and peer-regulated operation of animal farming, instances of malpractice constituting genuine animal cruelty are rare.

Whilst vegans and vegetarians are statistically uncommon, up to 15% of Australics self-identity as rarely eating meat. Of the combined ~1/4 of Australics who have a limited to null consumption of meat/animal products, most cite health (inc. dietary and allergy restrictions) or religion as their main factor in their lessening or lack of such consumption. The third most common reason is simply a distaste for meat.

Vegan/vegetarian meat immitation/substitute products are rare in Australia, as those who wish to avoid eating meat or animal products have many wholly vegetarian/vegan foods that are nutritious and palatable in there own rights, especially since many common substitutes aren't well suited for sustainable domestic farming.

Chiloshia's vegan/vegetarian numbers have always been on the low end for countries. The Ancestors of the Chiloshian People were Nomadic Pastoralists up until the medieval era. Despite this, there are religious seasons where they might abstain from eating meat for periods ranging from a day or two up to about a month.

Approximately 10% of the Angelan population are vegetarian, with most doing so because of adherence to a particular schools of thought within Catrionan folk-shamanism which negatively view the consumption of flesh. Many among this number are members of the priestesshood. Vegetarian dining establishments and options are common throughout the country.

In contrast, there is very little data on veganism in Angelus and it is estimated that less than 1% of the population practices it.

In the Holy Folkish Order of Evergar, veganism in particular has never become anywhere close to mainstream and is seen by most of the native citizens as too extreme and malnutritious as a dietary practice. Not much statistical data exists on who all eats vegan, but a government study from 2009 placed the prevalence of veganism amongst the national population at approximately 0.8%. On the other hand, various forms of vegetarianism enjoys marginal acceptance: at any given time, the state rates the median percentage of the native citizenry who adopt a vegetarian-based diet as between 9%-31%. The vast majority of Evergarians and their forefathers consume meat, encompassing everything from lean poultry to fattening steaks. Their regular, traditional consumption of meat stems from many factors, one of them being that butchery and religious animal sacrifice, which ends with the processing of carcasses of deer, goats, horses, swine, chickens, and other animals, both are legal and customary under the rule of law. This isn't to say most Evergarians are unopen to the idea of eating less meat and more vegetables, but given the historic significance of their ancestors doing the same thing they do today, vegetarianism continues to be a rather unmainstream discipline in their everyday lives.

The Statistics Subcommittee has not been studying this long, but based on government-run polls and cross-referencing tracked purchases approximately 20% is vegetarian, 20% is pescatarian, and 10% is vegan.

There is significant variation within the country as locally-sourced food consumption is considered important, so Imphicians on the coast are more likely to be pescatarian. The vegan number would likely be higher, but entomophagy is common among vegetarians, pescatarians, and omnivores.
