MYTANAR UNIVERSITIES FOOTBALL 28/29 SEASON REVIEW
The twenty-eight tertiary education institutions in Mytanija are not generally funded for sports in the same manner many universities and colleges are in other nations around the multiverse. Their main focus is education and students may join a sports club at their institution to compete in their spare time, most of Mytanija's best athletes in team sports are already picked up by professional teams at an early age given the significant reach of the academy systems and youth recruitment of many of these teams. For example, most talented young footballers will be in a professional team's academy by the age of around 12 or 13 and as they get to around the age of 16-18 their main focus will be on honing their craft for the professional team they play for and breaking into the first team rather than trying to impress recruiters and attain a scholarship as might happen in other countries. This does mean that the standard of sports at many institutions will not be comparable to that of other nations' student athletes, most of the competitors are playing for fun and there are very few scholarships available for sporting purposes.
There are of course a few exceptions, notably at the Mytanski Institut za Sport which is essentially a state-run sporting programme designed to support Mytanija's best athletes in non-football team sports, individual and winter sports. Top athletes will be given scholarships to complete their studies whilst being given access to some of the best coaching, facilities, medical care, nutrition and recovery available to sportspeople in Mytanija; those who have completed their studies may be given government grants in order to support their competitive pursuits despite no longer being under the auspices of the Institut. Many students do go to the Mytanski Institut za Sport just to study, but it is usually to study something tangentially related to sports performance like physiotherapy, psychology or sports science - these students get to work with top sportspeople whilst completing their studies, the aim being to keep them involved in the development of Mytanija's next great cyclists, handball teams, skiers, swimmers and volleyball stars. One of Mytanija's Winter Olympics medal hopefuls Slava Preobrazhensky is highly involved with the Mytanski Institut za Sport, demonstrating their reach and influence.
Outside of that, some foreign readers may be familiar with the University of Alzburg-Dyka, two-time NSCF champions in college gridiron. UAD are a member of the Rose League, a group of seven of Mytanija's oldest and most prestigious education institutions and they are historically the most successful of those seven when it comes to sport. They no longer offer scholarships for gridiron as they used to, nor do they operate such an enormous foreign recruitment drive as they did in that sport. Nowadays gridiron is unfavourably linked with the long deposed monarchy given its historic popularity among high society during the Kombarov era and as a result is often seen as outdated. There are occasionally murmurings that UAD may return to the NSCF, but nothing has come to fruition on that front as of yet and it may never do so. In terms of other institutions which enjoy sporting success, it is usually those with the larger student bodies which do well given the in-built advantage they have in being able to draw talent from a larger group of people. This means that the likes of the University of Thessia, Alex Util Politehnička; MIZT, National University, Decraa College; and the University of Arsika and TS-Prizren traditionally do well in their various leagues. Usually the Mytanski Institut za Sport win, though, meaning thankless seasons for generations of Mytanar students who try to compete against the omnipotent Institut.
Let's take a look at how the results of the latest football season went:
## Rose League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
01 University of Alzburg-Dyka 12 12 0 0 33 8 +25 36 Q, IUCC
02 Vedran University 12 6 4 2 19 18 +1 22
03 Kavka University 12 5 1 6 14 16 −2 16
04 Trojstva College 12 4 2 6 9 16 −7 14
05 Centralni Univerzitet 12 4 1 7 15 17 −2 13
06 Stratenberg University 12 3 3 6 13 19 −6 12
07 Dorotea Fazlic 12 2 1 9 18 27 −9 7
The University of Alzburg-Dyka win the Rose League with an unbelievably dominating season, winning all twelve of their games and scoring 33 goals at an average of 2.75 per game and only conceding 8 all season. A perfect year for them and back-to-back Rose League titles too, UAD remains the Rose League school with the best sporting reputation. Vedran University from Decraa actually had a decent season, losing only two games over the course of the campaign, but they just couldn't keep up with UAD. That represented a huge improvement for Vedran University from last season, when they finished bottom of the Rose League, but it just demonstrates the volatility of university football in Mytanija where the universities don't have the same enormous resources available to put towards scholarships for student-athletes as those that exist in other countries. UAD remain at the top of the Rose League because their history with sports attracts students with better sporting backgrounds to the university, those students want a chance to compete at a high level in sports (but were not quite good enough to sign for a professional team or attend the Mytanski Institut za Sport), whilst attending a university with a top academic background - something all Rose League schools can boast. It's difficult to see where a challenger for UAD will come from, but all it takes is one down year and we could see their hegemony at the top of Rose League football broken. For now, they'll have another chance at the finals group of the Mytanar universities championship and they will play in the IUCC once again.
## Northern League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
01 University of Thessia 12 11 1 0 33 10 +23 34 Q, IUCC
02 Alex Util Politehnička 12 9 1 2 26 10 +16 28
03 University of Zavolja-Sigurno 12 4 3 5 13 17 −4 15
04 Ebor Geološka Škola 12 3 4 5 9 16 −7 13
05 University of Rauchnya 12 3 3 6 12 19 −7 12
06 TI-Snezhnaya 12 3 2 7 13 20 −7 11
07 TU-Ibon 12 0 4 8 17 31 −14 4
There is always a great rivalry between the University of Thessia and Alex Util Politehnička and that especially manifests itself on the football pitch given the popularity of the sport in Thessia and across Mytanija more generally. The University of Thessia has Mytanija's largest student body and it gives them a broad range of potential players to draw from and that was demonstrated in their excellent run in the Northern League this season. They dropped points in only one game, the away game at Alex Util Politehnička where they drew, but other than that their record was flawless and it meant that they could win the Northern League this season ahead of their great rivals. Alex Util Politehnička won it last year, but this time they couldn't get close despite only finishing a point worse off compared to last season. TU-Ibon had a particularly bad year as they dropped from 3rd all the way down to bottom, not winning a game all season and that perhaps shows what a few top players graduating can do to your chances of doing well in university football. It is also rather telling that the University of Zavolja-Sigurno finished up in 3rd by only gaining two more points than they did all last season, with the Northern League being a tale of the big two and then the other five as the University of Thessia and Alex Util Politehnička fight for the title and the rest just fight for third place.
## Central League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
01 Mytanski Institut za Sport 12 7 4 1 25 8 +17 25 Q, IUCC
02 National University 12 7 2 3 26 16 +10 23
03 MIZT 12 5 5 2 31 23 +8 20
04 Decraa College 12 5 3 4 23 21 +2 18
05 IO-Esca 12 4 3 5 12 15 −3 15
06 PSEPN 12 2 2 8 7 18 −11 8
07 PJSMB 12 1 3 8 9 32 −23 6
It would be deeply embarrassing for the Mytanski Institut za Sport to finish anywhere other than top of the Central League given their in-built advantages as basically a government-funded sports programme for most of the non-football team sports Mytanija competes in, with students studying degrees which tend to be tangentially related to sport in some way. You will often find future handball and volleyball stars or summer and winter Olympians studying at the Institut whilst receiving government grants to support their sporting development alongside their studies. Those that choose to play football for the Institut have access to all of those same facilities those top athletes have access to, as well as often being future physiotherapists and sports scientists, giving them a greater understanding of the sport they compete in. That makes seasons it all the more impressive when other schools run them close for the Central League title as the National University did this season, finishing only two points behind the Institut at the end of the campaign. The Institut was pretty dominant defensively, but they ended up drawing a few games instead of winning them, which made the final standings a little tighter than they would have hoped. Still, they progress safely through to the finals group and few would bet against them making it two championships in two seasons.
## Southern League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
01 University of Arsika 12 11 1 0 26 9 +17 34 Q, IUCC
02 TS-Prizren 12 6 3 3 24 13 +11 21
03 Ostrova Tech 12 4 2 6 16 19 −3 14
04 Avnalia Agricultural College 12 4 2 6 23 31 −8 14
05 Prizren School of Art 12 3 4 5 21 24 −3 13
06 Tsrvena College 12 3 2 7 17 23 −6 11
07 Trunca Nautički Institut 12 1 6 5 19 27 −8 9
The University of Arsika goes back-to-back with an identical record, winning 11 games and drawing 1, they very nearly even have the same goal difference with the +17 from this year comparing favourably to their +16 of last season. They were similarly stifling defensively, conceding only 9 goals all season but they were better going forwards. TS-Prizren gave it a good go in trying to keep up with the Arsika school, but it was a futile task. The consistency of TS-Prizren is promising for them, they repeated their second place from last year but the rise of Ostrova Tech is perhaps the most impressive thing as they moved up from 6th to 3rd in the Southern League. It could be a difficult task for the other Southern League teams to try and overhaul the University of Arsika but the consistency of TS-Prizren the ability to improve of the other schools is promising and the organisers of football at university level will be hoping that it means we will see a different team qualifying out of the Southern League in the next couple of years. Nobody wants to see a Rose League scenario where one school is levels above the rest when it comes to sport.
## Mytanar Universities Final Group Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
01 Mytanski Institut za Sport 6 4 2 0 11 7 +4 14 C
02 University of Thessia 6 3 0 3 12 8 +4 9
03 University of Arsika 6 2 1 3 7 8 −1 7
04 University of Alzburg-Dyka 6 1 1 4 8 15 −7 4
Well, whilst the Mytanski Institut za Sport may have had an under-par Central League campaign, they showed their quality in the finals group. They were nowhere near as dominant as they were last time (20 goals scored to only 6 conceded), but they actually went undefeated this time around where they dropped a game last year. It's difficult to know whether the end result of accruing more points and not losing a game means it is less competitive or whether the Institut being less free-scoring and defensively smothering makes it more competitive. The games were better anyway and that's only a good thing. The University of Thessia finish in second, splitting their record perfectly with three wins and three losses; whilst the University of Arsika end up two points further back - they can be proud of managing a draw against the Institut though. The University of Alzburg-Dyka also managed a draw against the Institut and were much improved in the finals group compared to last year, managing to get some points on the board this time around. It is another championship for the Mytanski Institut za Sport though and it will be hard for anyone to stop them making it three-in-a-row next season.
