Introduction

This is the official signup thread for the Campionato Esportiva 30, Esportiva's longest running and biggest sports tournament. This football tournament has produced 15 different winners, with Nephara/New Sideburn and Brenecia holding the record for the most Campionato titles with five, and Apox having three titles to their name. The most recent winner of the tournament held in Hannasea was Nova Anglicana (AZE), winning their first Campionato Esportiva trophy after denying defeating Newmanistan after extra time.

Signup Instructions

Nations intending to signup for the tournament should be in Esportiva at the time of the creation of the thread. Nations returning from CTE and have participated in previous editions may enter at the discretion of the elected hosts or the organizers of the tournament. In extraordinary cases, the first requirement may be waived to make up numbers, but it is more of an exception than the norm and should be only invoked as a last resort.

Users are entitled to enter two nations, with one on puppet status which should be declared and confirmed by both nations. Kindly note that puppet signups may be purged from the entry list as per hosts' discretion, and normally the first puppets to be dropped are the ones signed up the latest. Nations entering with a different in-character (IC) name should include this in boldface in their signup to be recognized.

Hosting

Signed-up nations who intend to host the tournament should post their bids in this thread to be considered for voting. There is no prescribed number of users to host, though usually solo or joint host bids from two distinct users have been the norm for these kinds of tournaments. Bids posted should have the following information: How the tournament will be run (format), how the scores will be generated (scorination tool and parameters), and why should participants entrust you to run the tournament (OOC information and experience). The previous successful bid for the tournament is posted in the header for reference.

Bids will be opened by the time signups are open and will remain open within two weeks from opening the signup thread. Once the first bid is posted, other nations are given 5 days to submit competing bids in which 2 days will be allotted thereafter for participants to lodge queries on the bids.

In case no bids are posted within two weeks, the CE committee may put up an emergency bid within the week succeeding the two-week period, which may be withdrawn once a proper bid is posted.

Other Information

This thread may be used in lieu of the regional message board (RMB) for CE30-related discussions, and will serve as the discussion thread upon closure of signups.

The organizers of this tournament reserves the right to make adjustments to the admin side of the tournament in case needed. Should you have any queries, don't hesitate to ask either Filindostan, Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom, South Newlandia, or Sylestone via the usual channels (TG, RMB, and the NS Sports Discord channel).

Oh gods, you again?

Hey, that’s a bit much isn’t it?

I mean, I thought we’d got rid of your really weird way of formatting bids.

What, you mean the bit where I talk to and vaguely demean myself? I’ve got to have a schtick.

Alright, fine. Given it’s been a while, you should probably explain who you are again.

Indeed. If you haven’t come across me before, I’m the Licentian Isles, more commonly known as Licen, TLI, or that annoying Scottish git. I was previously an active part of Esportiva’s development as a region between 2012 and 2014 (including a period as WA delegate), and have recently returned to NSS.

What about the nation?

The Licentian Isles are a small island nation in central Esportiva, made up of six major islands in the Licentian Channel, geographically close to Apox, Damukuni, and Filindostan. They are home to around 13 million Licentians, who are split between four parishes named after their major cities: three on the mainland (Montfort, Abingdon, and Colesham), along with St Bart’s which comprises the outlying islands. The capital of the nation is Montfort, a metropolitan city home to a number of diasporas, and the largest city on the Isles.

The political structure of the Isles is best defined as “bloody confusing”. Each parish elects its own parliament (under various names), which then elect a Councillor to represent that parish on the Federal Council of the Licentian Isles. This Council acts as the decision making body for a number of national issues, but a number of major powers are devolved to the parishes. This developed from the previous duchy system, where each parish had a ruling Duke, from whom a Grand Duke was selected. This was overthrown in a violent revolution that occurred after a fascist takeover of the nation, in line with a number of other nations across the multiverse at the time.

The Isles have recently returned to the regional scene having been isolated for a number of years. I don’t just mean isolated like nobody was speaking to them: this was a metaphysical isolation where if you visited where the Isles were previously, you would just find an endless void. This, and the strange passage of time in the Isles compared to the rest of the multiverse, is yet to be fully explained, but many hope that by hosting international tournaments again, the Isles will once again be recognised as a strong contributor to Esportivan unity.

Licentians can definitely be described as “sports-mad”. This usually manifests itself in terms of football, where the Cyan-and-Gold are perhaps most famous, but rugby and field hockey are also popular. This is in addition to sports such as sailing, canoeing, and mountain biking, which all take advantage of the nation’s natural beauty. Football, being the most popular sport, is surrounded by a large fandom, some of whom are more savoury than others. Many fans will greet the Cyan-and-Gold with flares and banners whether at home or abroad, and this will be even more apparent should the Campionato return to these shores.

What about the behind the scenes stuff? How will you be generating the scores, and what sort of format will this take?

I intend for this to follow a fairly standard format for a regional tournament, with a single round robin group stage, with the top 16 teams advancing to the knock-out stages. I would be aiming for 8 groups of 4, but should this not be workable I’ll tweak the format and accept as many sign-ups as possible. I don’t particularly want to shut out any nations or puppets, but puppets would be dropped first in the case of too many nations for a particular format. I would absolutely aim for a larger format than a smaller one though. Tiebreakers would be GD, H2H, H2H GD, then an IC coin flip (OOC scorinated match).

I will be using the NSFS formula in Xkoranate, making use of the CE rankings and +- 5 additive style modifiers. Cut-off will be every 48 hours, provisionally around 11pm BST (though this is obviously subject to change prior to the tournament). There will be an RP bonus for each cut-off of course, and posting a roster will be incentivised with additional bonus.

There will be RP material posted at each cut-off for those looking for inspiration, largely surrounding the return of the Isles and regional unity, along with more general info that people can utilise through the tournament should they wish. I would also like to borrow the team of the tournament idea used by Hannasea at CE29.

Have you done this before?

Okay, so it’s been a while, but yes. I previously hosted two Baptisms of Fire (with Aguazul and Farfadillis), one Cup of Harmony (with Apox), and the second Campionato with Cyborg Holland. I also hosted a number of smaller tournaments in my original stint on NSS.

So, why are you getting back into hosting now?

From an IC perspective, it makes sense. With the Isles returning from the void they had been transported to, many efforts will be made to re-establish old friendships, and establish new ones, and there’s no better way to do that (at least on this sub-forum) than sports.

From an OOC perspective, I always enjoyed hosting, and I’ve always seen it as a way to give back to a community that has helped me to develop as a writer. I especially count Esportiva in that, and so for me there’s no better way to come back than by hosting this tournament for this community.
