Edgeli Adds Name to History Books with Quarter Final Triumph

Chromatik City Field, Chromia, Chromatika :: It was an interesting transition for the Turori National Team from the Round of 16 at The Jungle in Eyrods to the Quarter Final at Chromatik City Field in Chromia. At The Jungle, the Turori National Team were clearly the underdog nation. Nigel's Army were there but only if you squinted. The host nation had their fans in numbers despite the uncertainty of pre-match sales projecting which Round of 16 match-up and venue the host nation might get drawn into. In spite of the lopsided support in the stands, the Turori National Team played one of their best matches of the World Cup Finals. More specifically, the Eels stuck to their core tactic and executed without the need for in-match adjustments. From the opening kickoff to the final whistle, Tarek Edgeli's side executed the Turorian Karela strategy to perfection, shutting down every chance from their opponents to secure a 1-0 victory. After having conceded just 4 goals over a 15 match stretch in World Cup Qualifying with 12 Shutout performances, Turori had to adjust their strategy to escape from Group B after an unlikely draw the result of a single goal conceded against Yuezhou to open the World Cup Finals. It was the middle of a five match stretch where Turori conceded eight goals - double the amount that it had conceded in the fifteen matches that proceeded it. Escape from Group B offered Turori the chance to reset and they got back to basics in the victory over the hosts. Their reward was a Quarter-Final match-up against the last remaining Rushmori nation, Pasarga.

Despite being outmatched in numbers in The Jungle, the Turori National Team found comfort in the climate in Eyrods perhaps allowing them to settle in to the match at a subconscious level. It would be a much different affair in Chromatika's Capital City as the Eels faced Pasarga for the first time since the World Cup 82 Finals. After Turori defeated the host nation in the Round of 16, two factions had grown among the local attendees. Some locals took the position that since Turori eliminated Chromatika, they should root against the Eels and would side with Pasarga in the Quarter Finals. Others took the opposition position, cheering on the Eels as if the Eels could make it through to the Championship then Chromatika's Anomalies could lay claim to the title of "Kind of like Runners-Up". Either way, the neutral support had evened out and Nigel's Army found themselves relevant once more - and relevant en masse with up to 100,000 spectators allowed within the confines of the Chromatik City Field.

Some Turorian fans were thrilled to see the Eels drawn against Pasarga for the Quarter Finals seeing it as an opportunity for Turori to take some precedence from their progression over the Wanderers during the World Cup 82 Round of 16. While it took Penalty Kicks for Turori to survive on that day, the Pasarga match represented an important milestone in competition history for the Football Association of Turori. It was the first time that the Turorian National Team had ever advanced in a knockout round match at the World Cup Finals and then gone on to win two more knockout round matches at the same World Cup. Playing Pasarga in the Quarter Finals of World Cup 88, if the Eels could do the exact same thing this time around, they would become World Champions for the first time in their history.

Turori National Team head coach Tarek Edgeli had no injury concerns heading into the match against the Wanderers, fielding a full strength lineup at every position. The only decision Edgeli had to make was whether to start Cednia Beach AFC's Lulu Pumaziiri or the Tropicorp FC defender Moumouni Verre'elali. Pumaziiri had started each match for Turori in the Group Stage and contributed two goals in that stretch to co-lead all players on the squad. However, it was also the worst three-game defensive stretch for Turori during the entire World Cup 88 Cycle. Against Chromatika in the Round of 16 it was Moumouni Verre'elali partnering Turorian captain Mikki Mayelli in the center of defense for the first time in Chromatika & Cassadaigua and Turori secured their first Clean Sheet performance of the Finals. In the end, Edgeli would opt for the Defensive minded Defender over the one with two goals to their credit leaving Pumaziiri on the bench at kick off.

Pasarga were a team that started off the World Cup Finals hot with victories over HUElavia and Banija before dropping a Group Stage Matchday 3 result to already-eliminated Tikariot in a match that had absolutely no bearing on the final Group D table. The Wanderers had come in confident after a 2-0 Round of 16 victory over Hampton Island at The Island Dome in Myana and brought that momentum with them to the Chromatik City Stadium as the Rushmori side controlled the early possession and chances. While Pasarga were pressuring the Turorian defense, the Eels were at best bending and no where near breaking - keeping to their strategy and forcing Pasarga into low quality opportunities and few threatening opportunities.

After withstanding the Pasargan pressure for over ten minutes at the start of the match, the complexion of the fixture would change completely in the 12th minute when veteran forward Meldi'ita Mungwaii pressured and intercepted from Wanderers defender Tabor Csikós. Attempting to play across the field dangerously, Mungwaii got a foot in to block Csikós' pass attempt and collected the ball at their feet. Before they could make a move toward goal, however, Tabor Csikós had reached out to impede the Arlington City striker. The result was a free kick for the Eels from less than thirty yards out. Kentu Umaka'a stepped up and emboldened their legacy as one of the top Free Kick specialists of the modern Turori National Team - beating Szescõ Mezei to score their second goal of the World Cup 88 Finals.

For a few minutes after the opening goal, Turori maintained possession and kept the ball at arms length from their Pasargan opponents. Sensing the match was getting away from them, Pasarga stepped things into high gear and began pressing up from the back to re-claim possession and control of the match. For a moment it seemed to work, turning the momentum of the match back in the Wanderers favor but once again it was a missed play that unraveled the work they had done. This time it was an early step from Kiidallen Aeroluzzi that saw the change of possession and Aeroluzzi connected with a streaking Lati'ala Giaoka who had slipped past their marker Szalyk Földessy to find open space to run at goal. Giaoka released the shot from their foot just prior to the challenge coming in from Judit Kádár and the crowd held its breath as the ball once again snuck past the outstretched arms of Mezei and found the back of the net behind the Pasargan netminder. While it was against the run of possession over the first twenty minutes of play, the lead for Turori was well earned through the defensive pressure they had applied and the mistakes they forced the Wanderers into early in the match.

Now holding a two-goal advantage for just the second time of the World Cup 88 Finals, head coach Tarek Edgeli signaled for the Eels to slow the game down - urging possession where possible then deep clearances when threatened. It was far from the exciting game that lured fans in off the streets and kept watchers engaged in the land of the digital - but it was an effective strategy the prevented Pasarga from building up too much momentum as the Wanderers searched for a way back into the match.

Image
Despite the strong play in the first half, Edgeli would make two changes to the Turorian squad at half time, swapping out forwards with Kala'a Yuliizala replacing the Veteran Meldi'ita Mungwaii as Edgeli likely was thinking ahead and hoping to preserve Mungwaii for a potential Semi-Final fixture - and introducing Cuoabaza Orani’aoa out of an abundance of caution in place of Kiidallen Aeroluzzi who had picked up a knock late in the first half.

The Wanderers would also come out from the tunnel with two new faces in their lineup with 23 Year Old Ibini FC attacker Elek Salai replacing Spartangrad forward Boriska Nagy in an attempt to freshen up the Pasargan attack. After the lapse in marking concentration that contributed to Turori's second goal, Pasargan midfielder Szalyk Földessy was on the bench when the teams returned for the second half of play having been replaced on the pitch in a tactical swap by the more attacking minded Royal Canterlot HC midfielder Mária Vöröss.

Within minutes of play resuming in the second half, it appeared Pasarga had found a way through with the substitutes combining for a fine play that culminated with the ball being picked out of Wiyauw An'maude's goal. It was a rare mis-step for Moumouni Verre'elali on the day as the Tropicorp FC defender failed to get back on defense after supporting a rare second half Turorian attack. It forced Mikki Mayelli into marking both Salai and Júlia Müller - a near impossible task as the long ball was fed forward by Földessy. Müller collected the ball but skillfully flicked on to Salai who was now free in the penalty area and easily beat a helpless An'maude. However, the young Ibini FC attacker had anticipated the flick on from Müller slightly too well and had strayed offside just before the touch from their teammate. An otherwise textbook goal was called back for an offside that was difficult to notice during live action but clearly confirmed in the replay.

Having the goal nullified by the linesman's flag unsurprisingly provided a jolt for the Turori National Team who would run out the remainder of the match mistake free, holding the line through to the final whislte and securing a 2-0 Victory over Pasarga in front of nearly 100,000 fans at the Chromatik City Field.

With victory over Passarga in the World Cup 88 Quarter Final, Turori National Team Head Coach Tarek Edgeli became just the second Turorian head coach to ever lead Turori to a Quarter Final victory after Klailall Tuirma. It will set up a regional showdown in the Semi-Final between the Eels and Banija, the World Cup 84 Champions, for the right to compete in the World Cup 88 Final in Cassadaigua and Chromatika. The fixture will mark the first time during the World Cup 88 Finals that the Turori National Team will not have to pack their bags and move to a new city after a match with luxury of remaining in Chromatika's Capital City for the Semi Final matchup against Banija which will be played at Anomaly Tower.

Race Eelandii Complex, Eelandii, Turori :: At a scheduled press event at the Race Eelandii Complex in Turori's purpose built sportropolis of Eelandii, a new organization was unveiled to oversee Competitive Auto Racing within Atlantian Oceania. Dubbed the "AOCAR" the new organization declared itself to be the first collective organization with the designated intention and authority to sanction and operate competitive region-wide motorsports series across Atlantian Oceania. Information regarding the founding members or operating authorities of the AOCAR were not provided in detail at the press conference which was attended by Turori's Race Eelandii and iROS founder iBen Toralmintii, the event centered around the announcement of AOCAR's first sanctioned region-wide Motorsports Competition, the AOCAR Stock Car Series.

The Atlantian Oceania wide Stock Car Series will run in parallel with the Multiverse-wide Nationstates Stock Car Racing Association's Top Tier and Everlong Contenders Series events. While it may be considered the top tier of regional motorsport within Atlantian Oceania, it may still have to compete talent wise with established national leagues of significant reputation such as HASCAR. While no Full-Time NSSCRA Drivers will be permitted to participate in the AOCAR Stock Car Series, full time National Series drivers are eligible to compete if they can work around the schedule conflicts and finances of entering the new series. AOCAR Stock Car events will take place at a variety of tracks throughout the Atlantian Oceania Region and in some cases will act as support events to major NSSCRA events. One such exemplar already confirmed is AOCAR's signature 400 mile event at the Jalton Superspeedway in Saint Kanye which will take place alongside the NSSCRA's Vilaye Energy Drink Pole Qualifying for the Regular-Season ending Pencurve Electronics 500. It is expected that further NSSCRA-AOCAR joint race weekends will be confirmed once the NSSCRA Season 11 schedule is finalized.

Despite the fact that an individual who most press in the room had never heard of had stood up and delivered all the relevant information regarding the AOCAR Stock Car Series then offered to answer any questions - most of the questions were instead aimed back to the side wall where Turori's iBen Toralmintii remained. At first, the reporters attempted to keep the questions for Toralmintii on topic. First, asking whether Toralmintii supported the AOCAR Series which he most certainly did considering he had offered up his own Motorsports complex for the press conference which he was attending.

Second, the questions focused on whether Toralmintii would be an active participant in the AOCAR Stock Car Series as an owner through Race Eelandii. Toralmintii was non-committal saying that the team at Race Eelandii were "Evaluating the metrics" in respect to whether it made sense for them to field a full time entry in the series. It didn't take a great leap, however, for the questions to further deviate as to whether the all-time winningest driver in World Grand Prix Championship history would be returning for another attempt at a first Driver's Championship during WGPC Season 19. Naturally, Toralmintii responded in a coy manner, indicating that while they would love to win a championship - their record of most consecutive race victories and most total Grand Prix checkered flags was something they were very proud of. When asked if they had considered driving full time in the AOCAR Stock Car Circuit, Toralmintii quipped that 'It would certainly make the travel easier to stay within the Region!' before politely declining any more questions so that attention could be put back towards the representative from AOCAR at the podium.

One surprising bit of information coming from the Question and Answer session was that there would be a full-time dedicated team from Cocoabo Park representing the Cocoabo Enrichment and Enhancement Project. The information quickly sparked discussion about which of Turori's Cocoabo would be be driving full time in the AOCAR Series, which specifically excludes full time NSSCRA drivers from participation.

Image
Image

During NSSCRA Season 10 there were three full-time Cocoabo Drivers in the NSSCRA with Cocoabo #28 and Cocoabo #78 driving for Team Tropicorp in the NSSCRA Top Tier while Cocoabo #37 drove for the team in the Everlong Contenders Series. While both Cocoabo #28 and Cocoabo #78 are former NSSCRA Race Winners, neither Cocoabo was able to win a race during NSSCRA Season 10 and all three Cocoabo failed to advance to the playoff rounds in their respective circuits. While it is not known how many Cocoabo could potentially be close to graduating from the Cocoabo Enrichment and Enhancement Project to become prospect drivers in the future, Only four have thus far been certified to compete on track with other citizen drivers in internationstatal competition. While other prospective Cocoabo Drivers have been going through the training programmes at Cocoabo Park, it is not currently believed that any additional Cocoabo drivers are currently at the level required to receive certification to compete against non-Cocoabo opposition.

With three of the four certified Cocoabo having been full-time NSSCRA Competitors, the announcement of full time Cocoabo in AOCAR quickly fanned the flames of a rumor that had been kicking around for weeks ever since the all-but-confirmed revelation that Stacie Houston would be either sitting out the season or contemplating retirement as she prepares to welcome a child into the world. While rumors surrounding the future of Team Cassadaigua post-Houston had run the gamut of possibilities, one rumor stood out among the rest as being both crazy and practical at the same time. Having struggled to find their competitive edge during NSSCRA Season 10, the twii.tur backed Team Tropicorp outfit was rumored to be in discussions for a merger with Team Cassadaigua.

While the details of the rumored merger were never clear, it was obvious that in the merger Team Tropicorp could acquire the services of a quality driver as a replacement for the inconsistent and career win-less Anavella Ariiki. Most rumors had the driver of choice for Team Tropicorp being the rising star Maddie Alexander and a recently leaked photo on twii.tur has turned the dial on the rumor well passed 10 as speculation runs rampant that Alexander has signed on with Team Tropicorp to either replace or race along side Turori's Star Cocoabo drivers from the Cocoabo Enrichment and Enhancement Project.

Image

Maddie Alexander was a dominant force in the first ever Everlong Contenders Series season for Team Cassadaigua, winning two races during the regular season and advancing through to the Everlong Series Championship Finale where they would finish third behind TJUN-ia's Maddison Riley-Jones and Saint Kanye's Daryl Calhoun. During the core of the regular season, Alexander held the Everlong Contenders Series points lead which allowed the Dagan to test their skills against some of the best drivers in the multiverse including legendary World Grand Prix driver iBen Toralmintii in the Turorian's Race of Stars Series.

It was widely expected that Alexander would move straight up to the NSSCRA's top flight with Team Cassadaigua to replace the struggling Bryan Harrison who could only finish 23rd in the NSSCRA point standings. However, the situation in Cassadaigua seems to have changed with All-Star driver and former NSSCRA Champion Stacey Houston appearing to re-evaluate her duties for the upcoming season and stepping back from the full time drivers role. This decision has left the #27 seat open for Alexander to inherit with backing from Houston's long time sponsor Five Star Mobile.

With Houston shifting over to support Jeremiah Brooke however, Team Cassadaigua were looking for a new technical partner and may have found it in Team Tropicorp. The Tropicoast based operation had been leveraging Turori's Cocoabo as their primary drivers since their formation during NSSCRA Season 7 with varied levels of success and a handful of race victories. During NSSCRA Season 9 they signaled their intention to focus less on research and more on results with Cocoabo #28 representing Team Tropicorp and the entire Island Emirate of Turori in the NSSCRA Playoffs. The team would regress during NSSCRA Season 10 however with neither of the Turorian Cocoabo nor home grown driver Anavella Ariiki contending for a playoff spot. The drop in performance caused Team Tropicorp to go back to the drawing board, releasing Ariiki from her contract to drive for the team and now it seems they have found the perfect partnership, merging with Team Cassadaigua to form a new unified entry for the upcoming 11th NSSCRA Season. The team will supposedly look to shift gears entirely utilizing a mix of new-build Hybrid Dart Chassis and NSSCRA 10 Race-Proven Blaze Racing Machines acquired in the merger with Team Cassadaigua in an attempt to return to the NSSCRA Playoffs and challenge for the Rookie of the Season honors with Alexander in the #27 machine. The new team will continue its partnership with Turori's Cocoabo Preservation Society and the Cocoabo Enrichment and Enhancement Project with Cocoabo #28 being the teams primary driver along side Maddie Alexander and and as-yet not announced driver for the teams third car.

Cocoabo Squad Looking to Make Friends in Cassadaigua

Cocoa-bo Stadium, Starksville, Cassadaigua :: When the full time whistle blew after ninety minutes of action in Starksville, twii.tur and Cocoa-bo couldn't have been happier with the outcome. Not the outcome of the match, per say - though they appreciated the audience that having a five time World Cup Champion playing in their signature match at the Cocoa-bo Stadium - but with the outcome of their joint promotion sending three lucky fans to the World Cup 88 Round of 16 matchup at the Cocoa-bo Stadium in Starksville.
Image

As luck would have it, the First knockout round fixture between Starblaydia and Savigliane would be the third time in four matches at the Cocoa-bo Stadium that a five time World Cup Champion would step onto the field. After hosting Five Time World Cup Winners the Vilita Jungle Cats on the opening matchday of the Group Stage, the Cocoa-bo Stadium would later host back-to-back matches featuring Starblaydia - first to close out the group stage against Tequilo and then the knockout round match against Savigliane that Starblaydia would win in thrilling fashion by a 4-3 scoreline.

Among the lucky winners was a local, Rachel Hutchinson of Cassadaigua who joined a pair of Turorian's who were flown in for the occasion as guests of twii.tur and Cocoa-bo, being adorned with gear, whisked into the Cocoa-bo suites for Food and Drinks and taking home a number of collectibles to commemorate the occasion. Yet just as quickly as it had begun, it was over. The Round of 16 was the end of the line for Starksville and the Cocoa-bo Stadium's participation in the World Cup 88 Finals. Though renovated - the capacity at just 70,000 did not compare to what stadiums closer to the Capital City could offer in size.

While the joint twii.tur / Cocoa-bo promotion lined up perfectly with the matches being played at the Cocoa-bo Stadium, the biggest rounds of the World Cup Finals were still to come and Turori's biggest brands had their entire marketing road crews off in an entirely separate location from where Turori were playing and had to figure out how to make the best of the situation on hand. While the Turori National Team may not have been in Cassadaigua, however, Turori's National Cocoabo Squad was. At least... most of it.

Aside from a few Cocoabo who were actually in Chromatika to train with Turori's National Citizen Squad as emergency backup players at the World Cup Finals, the majority of the rest of the Cocoabo Squad travelled to Starksville - funded by Cocoa-bo to do appearances throughout Cassadaigua during the World Cup 88 Finals but most specifically to appear in the Cocoa-bo Fanzone outside the Cocoa-bo Stadium in Starksville to encourage fans from throughout the multiverse to learn more about the origins of the Cocoa-bo, its habitat as well as the details of the Cocoabo Enrichment and Enhancement Project spearheaded by the Cocoabo Preservation Society and Tropicorp at Cocoabo Park.

While the Cocoa-bo Fanzone at Cocoa-bo Stadium would not be completely dismantled following the completion of the Round of 16 - it would largely be torn down with only a large screen and handful of kiosks remaining to allow any fans remaining in the area or locals who wanted to continue to watch World Cup Knockout Round matches on the big screen. Some of the Cocoa-bo paddock displays would remain but Turori's National Cocoabo Squad was scheduled to head back home to Cocoabo Park. That was, until Cocoa-bo stepped in with a new idea. While Turori's National Team was not based in Cassadaigua, another group who were arguably just as responsible for the multiverse-wide success of Cocoa-bo were. The Holy Empire.

Represented at the World Cup 88 Finals by Cuddly Cthulhu and his Playful Pals, The Holy Empire team were making the rounds throughout the Rushmori Nation engaging with their opposition and inviting them to pre-match Tea and Crumpets. Whether the Ritual Tea and Crumpets were allowing Cuddly Cthulhu and his Playful Pals to gain a psychological advantage over their opponents - or perhaps even something physical - The Holy Empire were making quick work of each of their opponents to date. What a great opportunity it would be to get Cuddly Cthulhu and his Playful Pals to enjoy pre-match Tea and Crumpets at a Cocoa-bo location?

Of course, one could not long forget the history between Cocoa-bo and The Holy Empire, the long lasting Independent Cocoa-bo Commission led by Sir Barsanuphius that implicated Inura Extracts as a possible source of performance enhancing properties that catapulted the Vilitan National Team to the pinnacle of the World Rankings following World Cup 81 and 82 - but that ultimately proved largely inconclusive when tested against all species other than Fluffy Bunnies and Cheergirls. Despite what initially seemed to be bad press for Cocoa-bo, sales of the standard Cocoa-bo delectable mixture skyrocketed multiverse wide and the brand became a household name well outside of Atlantian Oceania and its Esportivan and Rushmori hub locations.

Bringing a team of Cuddly Cthulhu and his Playful Pals into a Cocoa-bo location for Tea and Crumpets and offering exclusive coverage of the event on twii.tur would be a seemingly fitting way to put the Sir Barsanuphius firmly into the past and take the next step into the future with Turori's National Cocoabo Squad offering to join the Great Old Ones Friends Initiative (GOOFI). Of course, Cocoa-bo locations didn't necessarily offer "Tea" and "Crumpets" but the Cocoa-bo hoped that the offered substitution of "Chai" and "Pikelets" would suffice to entice.

Image

Dear Cuddly Cthulhu and the Great Old Ones Friends Initiative,

Congratulations on your outstanding performance thus far at the World Cup 88 Finals in Cassadaigua!

We at Cocoa-bo have been enjoying ourselves as well. However, now that the Round of 16 has ended, our squad of Footballing Cocoabo have no one to play with! All the fans have left Starksville and headed to the big cities to watch your continued march toward the World Cup Final!

Before they head back home to Cocoabo Park, our team of Footballing Cocoabo are going to be stopping through Concord Heights and Brattleboro to visit select Cocoa-bo locations! Would you like to meet up with the Cocoabo for some tasty treats?

We understand your affection for Tea and Crumpets. While our most popular drink is the Cocoa-bo Delectable, our physical Cocoa-bo locations have a wide variety of drinks and edibles including Chai and Pikelets. We think you will find our offerings very comparable to your preferred Tea & Crumpets!

What better way to show the multiverse that there are no hard feelings from that little inquisition thingy a few cycles back then to stop on in and make friends with some of the most skilled Cocoabo in the multiverse? Of course, we wouldn't want to interfere with your preparations for your World Cup Knockout round matches but... who knows... maybe some Cocoa-bo would give you a little boost!

Sincerely,

Turori's National Cocoabo Squad
& Cocoa-bo Rushmore Division - Starksville, Cassadaigua

As the highest ranking Banijan official attending, she has emphatically ruled out contributing to AO/Anaia rivalry while she is there, telling reporters that she will look to get along well with whatever Audioslavian government representatives are at the game(if any) and Cassadagan officials. In a welcome change to last week's intentionally muted pre-match festivities against Valanora and the nerves and general b-movie horror of taking on the monsters of The Holy Empire, a relaxed atmosphere surrounded Audioslavia's third-placed playoff against Banija. Pre match rumours of the game being a microcosm of inter-regional tensions looked to be wide of the mark. Audioslavia were not lining up in Anaian purple but instead their all-white second kit against the famous green of Banija. Ricardo Rastelli, preferred to a fatigued David Logan, gave Jinja City team-mate Lama Nyang's shoulder a squeeze as the teams lined up in the tunnel, and the two defenders exchanged a hug. Two of the MacCowan brothers exchanged fist-bumps with former Celtade team-mate Kausu Dione, and as the two sides took to the field, the cameras highlighted Sarauniya Iriama standing next to Audioslavian First Minister Wilbur Hawes, with the two dignitaries clapping the combatants onto the field as their plus-ones chatted animatedly. Another match in Concord Heights for Audioslavia, who had begun to take a liking to the stadium. Blue skies overhead. A good day.

For Banija, there may have been some disappointment. The side, favourites for their semi-final with Turori, had come up short and would be playing in a third 3PPO in as many cycles. For Audioslavia, just being at the sharp end of the World Cup was something most people in the stadium had simply never witnessed before. World Cup 76 was the last semi-final appearance for the Bulls all of 48 years ago. Generations. The Bulls were happy to be here. They'd had their chances in the semis against The Holy Empire, but the Imperials had had more, and the match had gone to form, skill and delivery. All that was left now was to celebrate what could be their new position in the football world. No longer on the fringes of international football, but right back in the mix of the world's top ten. Also on the table was the chance to finally get one over on a Banija side who had never lost to the Bulls in four attempts, including three back-to-back-to-back wins in AOCAF Cup 62. Just competing today would be nice. The extra ranking points might come in handy for future seedings as well.

Leandro Ceron shouted heads at a tumbling coin, which duly came up tails. Kuma Bultum nodded at the referee and announced they'd be kicking off. Leandro decided his team would defend the end of the stadium with the travelling Audioslavia fans, who gave them an almighty roar as they strolled to take their positions. Goran Stroud bashed his gloves together and bellowed some intelligible advice at his defenders and some choice obscenities for anyone who was considering kicking a ball past him over the next four hundred years, and the referee peeped.

Kuma Bultum, 85th minute of Audioslavia v. Banija at Dagan Airways Stadium in Concord Heights

It was 1-0 to Audioslavia here in the third place playoff. It was as many third place playoffs were- full of attacking football, plenty of effort, but not quite the intensity and nerves of either squads previous matchups to get to this stage. Third place playoff matchups were always meant to be fun, and this one was, even if both teams had left their finishing boots at home.

AC Izotz Zubia attacking midfielder Eurico Da Rosa had scored the only goal of the game thus far, in the 35th minute. A sublime dribbling move at the 18 to get Alanso Tibamba spinning on his back heel, and then a powerful shot from that distance towards the bottom corner that made it a truly highlight reel goal for the Audioslavian. A truly skilled player, the #10 for both one of the best club sides and best national teams in the world, it was an attention seeker.

As Banija seeked to equalize, however, the manager had ideas to honor the three members of the Banijan old guard who would be retiring from national team duty after this game, who had all started the World Cup 86 Final just two years prior. In the 60th minute, off came Madu Okparra. One of now three Banijans to have winners medals from both the Champions League and the World Cup. Banijan fans would get to see plenty of him- he will be playing for Herzegovina City when the club season picks back up in August. His curtain call moment out here in Cassadaigua. He got a huge round of applause.

And then, Ilman Jawara. Second Banijan to ever hit the century mark in terms of goals scored for the national team. A true legend. 72nd minute subsitution, again timed so he could get his curtain call from the Banijan half of the crowd. The crowd chanted his name- "Ilman! Ilman!" As the longtime #9 jogged off the field. What a career Jawara had. Succeeding another star #9, Assefa Yitebarke, he outstripped his predecessor and then some, becoming a goalscoring machine for both club and country for the entirety of his prime.

And lastly- Kuma Bultum. Probably the most decorated Banijan to ever play this sport. All sorts of domestic accolades in the Elven Premiership. A record-setting purchase for any Banijan player, over $20 million NSDs when he was a young defender for Bunyoro RSC(back in the days when they were in the top flight). Multiple league titles at Raynor City United. Multiple all-pro selections in Valanora's top flight. A two-time member of the Galacticos starting XI. Anchor for the back line of a World Cup winning Banijan squad.

Kuma Bultum was nothing if not consistent. Every day, for all these years. Coming in. Putting in the work. Leaving it on the field. Rinse. Wash. Repeat. Even as a defender defined by a generation of great Banijan attackers, like Gitonga Kahara, Namakula Kawesa, and Ilman Jawara, not to mention guys like Madu Okparra, he still stood out as a shining light. Probably, in terms of raw talent, when you consider his accolades, the greatest Banijan to ever play this game.

And while he loved the decade+ he spent in Valanora, and loved Brenecia now as well, he knew his time was up for the national team. Even wearing the armband. So when, in the 85th minute, he saw his name on the substitute board, tears came to his eyes. Banijan fans wearing green chanted his name. "BUL-TUM! BUL-TUM! BUL-TUM!" Rumbled throughout the stadium.

Tears started to flow down Bultum's face, as the gravity of the situation hit him. He gave the armband to his defensive partner, Alanso Tibamba, and walked off the field. As he walked off, he hugged Marcus Waters, the only international manager he'd ever known. A sad moment, an international retirement. Audioslavia was the better team on the day- they had their moment, took their chance, and ultimately, created more chances than the Banijans. A deserved bronze medal for the Bulls, medaling for the first time in nearly 50 years(by their calendar).

A day, filled with emotion. Something he had always done. Taken for granted, even. But what a career. He was always ready for the moment. And to score the winner to knock out Nephara? What a highlight to end your career. He shook the hands of a number of his Audioslavian counterparts, great respect for each other despite the politics of the AO/Anaia situation. He even got to share a hug with the Sarauniya herself after the match, as the Banijans watched and clapped from the sidelines as the Audioslavians were awarded their bronze medals.

His career still had a few more years left. But the international football part of his life? That chapter of his book was now officially closed.

Dear Tarek Edgeli,

We're so excited to be playing you in the World Cup 88 final. Will your team be our friends? Will you join us for tea and crumpets before the match and become members of GOOFI - the Great Old Ones Friendship Initiative?

GOOFI exists to build links of cuddle-based friendship between ordinary mortals, Great Old Ones, and Elder Gods.

Turori sounds like it's just the the bestest nation ever! You have so many ancient horrors in your land, like the cocoabo bird (and we've already had a letter from your cocoabos offering us friendship! We're so excited that we're going to write them their own letter!), and the mystical ruler of your land - the dread and mighty eel known only as 'Nigel'!

Is it true that Nigel is the true secret ruler of of Turori? Here at GOOFI we admit that we're slightly confused on this point. Opinion varies as to whether:

  • Turori is controlled by a secret cabal of Vilitans who pull your strings from the shadows - which is absolutely A-OK with us! We absolutely adore secret cabals who hide in the background, and pull the strings of their unwitting puppets! Some of our closest friends are members of secret cabals! Also, did you know that Vilita have joined GOOFI? So if you are controlled by a shadowy cabal of Vilitans, this means we absolutely can be friends. Hurrah!
  • Turori is controlled by a secret cabal of shadowy corporations who use the island emirate as a front for the distribution of the beverage known only as 'Cocoa-bo' - which is absolutely A-OK with us! We just tried Cocoa-bo for the first time the other day, and everyone in GOOFI thinks it's yummy! We think Sir Barsanuphius (remember him?) is just silly; brave, but silly. So if you are controlled by a shadowy corporate cabal, this still means we can be friends - especially if you bring Cocoa-bo to the party. Hurrah!
  • Turori is controlled by a giant malevolent electric eel called Nigel; although Cthulhu has suggested it's actually spelled "Nig'el". We have read all sorts of reports from World Cup 68 that suggest Nig'el is real, and that you worship him. We hope this is true, and that you bring Nig'el to the the match, so he can also join us for tea and crumpets and cuddles before the match. So if you are controlled by a shadowy malevolent electric eel, this still means we can be friends - especially if Nig'el also comes to the party. And maybe you can also wear those fetching lime green Nig'el-themed kits from World Cup 68 when you come to our party! Hurrah!

Dagon thinks he met Nig'el once, and has helped us prepare a friendly invitation card! Here's what it looks like!

Image

So you can see that we want Nig'el and all the other eels from Turori to be our friends! Honest we do! And you can still be our friends if you're not ruled by Nig'el, but are instead controlled by a shadowy cabal of Vilitans, or a shadowy corporate cabal! We can always be friends!

Though we really do hope that it turns out you're ruled by Nig'el. We don't get to meet many other eldritch horrors, which makes us all sad.

In truth, our attempts to make friends with other nations just haven't been that successful. This also makes us sad. Vilita joined GOOFI, which was super nice (and even nicer if they're your secret rulers!). And Audioslavia also joined GOOFI, which was super-exciting, especially when they shared scones with jam and clotted cream with us! Scones with jam and clotted cream are just as yummy as crumpets! And they served us a really delicious Audioslavian dish called Polvorice, which turned out to be made out of octopus! Cthulhu was ever so excited to try the Polvorice, and when some of the Audioslavians looked slightly queasy at the way he was stuffing those tentacles into his own tentacled maw, he was able to assure them that Great Old Ones just aren't bound by mortal morality, and that a little bit of pseudo-cannibalism never did an Elder God any harm. Which was super, because it meant that Audioslavia could join GOOFI! It's just a shame that someone had to lose the semifinal, though I think our GOOFI friends in Audioslavia will be very disappointed to have succumbed to a deflected last-minute Koenraad Risjbergen own-goal. I mean, succumbing to the Great Old Ones is something that most mortals do at some point or another, and Audioslavia do have a habit of slightly humiliating self-inflicted losses in high-pressure matches (which has nothing to do with us, promise!) but even so... we hate to see our GOOFI friends look so disappointed.

But other than Vilita and Audioslavia, no one else has joined GOOFI. Why is this? You don't think people are ... scared of us, do you? We're ever so lovely and friendly, honest we are!

So please join GOOFI! We can have ever so much fun together! It'll be ever so jolly! With tea and crumpets and cuddles!

In the meantime, here are 100 plush cuddly Cthulhu toys to show you how much we care.

Thank you ever so much,

Your new friends in GOOFI

PS: Do you think Banija's Kuma Bultum is a mad cultist? With a name like that, he certainly sounds like he is. But we're not sure. Do you know? :?

Dear Turori National Cocoabo Squad,

Thank you ever so much for your friendly letter! We'd love to join your National Cocoabo Squad for some tasty treats! That's super-friendly of you!

We think that the mighty cocoabo bird is just amazing! So amazing that we're using even more exclamation marks than we usually do! Are cocoabo birds used by cultists in your nation as part of strange rituals under the light of a gibbous moon, where mad cultists howl their insane paen to dread secrets unimaginable? We hope not; we're not very fond of mad cultists. They're always misunderstanding the uselessness of their ant-like existence, so we think they're over-compensating for something (if you know what we mean).

We recently tried Cocoa-bo for the first time, and we think it's yummy! And these chai and pikelets sound delectable! We'd love to try them with you!

So yes, let's meet up up before the match for tea and crumpets and chair and pikelets - and Cocoa-bo too!

Thank you ever so much,

Your new friends in GOOFI

PS: We're really sorry about that inquisition thingy. We think Sir Barsanuphius is a silly poopy-head.

OOC: Dated? Yes, because I didn't have better opportunity to talk about these before. But I can't think of a better avenue for me to wrap up another chapter in Poafmersia.

Dear Cuddly Cthulhu and the Great Old Ones Friends Initiative,

By the time this gets to you, Poafmersia would have returned home really long ago, while The Holy Empire will be extending their journey in Chromatika. The finals would probably a strong fight there, and I believe the Red Panjias really enjoyed playing against you. Speaking of Panjias, well I forgot to introduce myself. I am Cehthun, one of the free roaming Panjias here in Poafmersia. Panjias are a bred of animals in Poafmersia. In Poafmer, Panjias loosely translates to horses, but we are definitely not horses. In fact, we are way smaller than horses. I know some other nations have llamas, and god-knows-what other nations have. We are just fast, look like horses, but actually we look more like llamas.

Whenever others come to Poafmersia, and see these free roaming Panjias, they will always look at us with surprise. Then, as though something hit them, they will start to shout and scream and turn around in circles. What is going on? I don't know what these people think of us. Maybe GOOFI can explain to us. But to Poafmers, we are like a national animal. Our spirit is what they Poafmers want to see - we are very protective of nature, and Poafmers understand us. No cars on many major cities, free roaming Panjias all around. They treat us like treating kings - we are really grateful that they name their national football team after us, which is why it is a honour to be the representative of Poafmersia, writing this to you.

I don't know what now - Panjias don't exactly fly planes. We hate planes! Rail is our preferred mode of travel - just like how Poafmers don't really have lots of domestic flights apart from those to that island of Trimidau. The rail is superior to planes, I believe. Some even prefer the coach. Nevertheless, it seems impossible to fly to Chromatika to join the remaining members of GOOFI and enjoy the finals. How then? I shall cheer on all of you from Poafmersia. Surely there will be Poafmers waiting to see whether a new champion will be born, or will The Holy Empire reclaim the title. I just wish both sides all the best, and enjoy this game from Poafmersia - there will definitely be some big screen streaming this match, like always.

Love,
Cehthun the Panjia.

Huge success for the "Suliaha masterplan" as President confirms the conferring of Top Honours to football team head coach
As reported by Poafmer Times
Fiskadaha - Poafmers are still particularly interested in the finals of the World Cup, which will be held live tomorrow afternoon Poafmersian time, to see if The Holy Empire can obtain the title that eluded them 2 years ago, or whether Turori can end their unbeaten cycle on a high and clinch the title that they long to have.

But the attention has partially turned back home, as Poafmers celebrate 10 years of International football, coming from the "Suliaha masterplan" 10 years ago, when Poafmersia first signed up for the World Cup. It was then, where the current head coach of the national football team, Adnan Suliaha, made the proposal back to the Ministry of Arts, Sports and Culture (MASC), to allow Poafmersia to begin opening up to the international world through sports. And the masterplan was for Poafmersia to qualify for the World Cup within 5 cycles, or 10 years in Poafmersian time. It was bold and daring to think about that, but Adnan Suliaha was determined to make it happen.

First, came the first generation of players. Joel Haodao, Sandi Jaliaha, Jabik Henderson, Danzik Hoboson, Shakira Handris. All of them were brilliant players. Came through as 3rd in the BoF, but went against all odds to clinch 3rd in that year's qualifiers, barely missing out against Siovanija and Teusland, Nephara, the top 2 seeds. Then came the really tough group in the 2nd attempt, but Poafmersia managed to get into the knockout stages of the Cup of Harmony that cycle. The 3rd cycle was the heartbreak, where Poafmersia threw away a series of points to give up their advantageous position.

But the youth was slowly coming up. First was Nero Wood, Arnold Shwentin. Then also Matea Idowu, Iulianus Innocenti, Michael Jackson, Jordan Huerta. The 4th cycle, was an absolute breakthrough, as Poafmersia qualified for the playoffs, and defeated Omerica to qualify for the World Cup for the first time, where they lost to The Holy Empire in the quarters. It was a dream come through for Adnan Suliaha, who achieved his dream one entire cycle early. The solid result pushed Poafmersia, for the first time, into the 2nd pot for the qualifiers, and they defeated all odds to clinch their qualification group to secure their 2nd qualification. Though they lost in the Round of 16, again against The Holy Empire, it was a very successful cycle in the eyes of many Poafmers, given how much youth had came through the ranks and replaced the first generation of players. Makana Tuft was now the new captain. The now-famous Tuft-Dufour-Innocenti frontline showed itself in the qualifiers. And Poafmersia became more tactically advanced, adapting between 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 and 3-4-3. The latter 2 was used frequently, and it often confused opponents in the qualifiers.

Poafmersia also has 2 IACs to their name over the past 4 cycles. Though they were eliminated by eventual champions Squidroidia in the quarterfinals last cycle, Poafmersia would definitely be in a position to mount a strong comeback this cycle. There will be some players who will make their retirement goodbyes in the IAC. There will also be new players making debut. But nevertheless, chasing a record hat-trick of titles would be the dream of many Poafmers, especially since it would mark a beautiful end to the era, with all the first generation players, save Joel Haodao and Dargis Walshor, expected to all leave the international team.

Adnan Suliaha will be conferred the Order of Poafmersia (First Class), in acknowledgement of his contributions towards bringing Poafmersia to the international stage. Assistant coach Katiri Hedge will be awarded Order of Poafmersia (Second Class) for his similar contributions to the national team. There has been a petition for some of the first generation players to be awarded an honour award, but that decision will be placed on hold.

Poafmersia Football Association confirms plans to bid for upcoming IAC
As reported by Sporting Daily
Fiskadaha - The Poafmersia Football Association (PFFA) has confirmed plans to bid for the upcoming 13th IAC, marking Poafmersia's very first foray into hosting international football competitions.

The plan was announced at the post-World Cup press conference, given by the PFFA. The press conference will often line out the team's targets in the World Cup, the reflection points, and also targets for the upcoming World Cup. The PFFA pointed out that the hosting will coincide "beautifully" with 10 years of international football in Poafmersia, the 12th anniversary of the formation of the PFFA, and also gives a brilliant opportunity for Poafmers to showcase the Poafmersian spirit. "This is an excellent opportunity for us to take the first step in opening up more of our country, welcoming others to our nation, and also boost Poafmersia's position within the footballing community," said Dean Schzwalger, President of the PFFA Council. Mr. Schzwalger also confirmed that the proposal is well supported by the Ministry of Arts, Sports and Culture, and they are in "final preparations" with regards to the upcoming proposal. "We are reviewing the plans and will push it out at a more suitable time," he said.

During the press conference, Mr Schzwalger also took the opportunity to highlight the progress of the Poafmersian national team thus far. "Believe it or not - we will be entering the qualifiers for the 89th World Cup in the top 15," he shouted, to rounds of applause from the members in the room. "It has been a long journey, but we have reached the step where we are proud to say that our nation is a footballing powerhouse in the multiverse." He points out that the team has faced few difficulties at first, in setting up the national team, formation of the domestic league and all, but points at the number of young talents that have joined the ranks of the 16 teams in the Apex. "Our first 10 years have been relatively successful. We believe that we can go even further in the next decade, to get to even further heights."

Edgeli's Eels Overcome Banija, Prepare for Dream(ed) Final

Anomaly Tower, Chromia, Chromatika :: For the first time at the World Cup 88 finals, the Turori National Team had the opportunity to relax and reflect ahead of their next match. After being the only team in Group B that was forced to change venues for each of their consecutive group stage matches, then once again changing cities and traveling distances to reach their Round of 16 and Quarter Final venues, the Eels were relieved to learn that their Semi-Final matchup would take place right in Chromia - where they had already been for their 2-0 victory over Pasarga in the previous round. Their opponents, Banija, would be traveling from Alnio after a very hard fought Quarter Final fixture against their rivals the Commonwealth of Baker Park at the RCK Field. Coupled with Valanora's defeat in the Cassadaigua half of the World Cup bracket, it would make Turori and Banija the final two regional rivals left in Cassadaigua & Chromatika.

The two Atlantian Oceania based nations had taken very different paths to arrive at the World Cup 88 Semi-Finals. Not specifically during the World Cup 88 cycle itself where in qualifying both Banija and Turori were unbeaten over the 18 match qualifying campaign... even specifically in the finals as both Turori and Banija had to secure 3-2 victories on the final match day of the group stage in order to book their spot in the Knockout Rounds. However - since their debut in internationstatal sport - very different paths have been taken when comparing both Banija and Turori that would lead them on the way to their most important meeting ever - the World Cup 88 Semi-Final. Of course, while the Turori National Team made their internationstatal debut during the 15th World Cup Cycle, it would be a further 58 cycles before Banija's first appearance at the World Cup Qualifying level during the 73rd World Cup cycle.

The two teams would cross paths in a meaningful way for the first time during Qualifying for World Cup 80 where Turori came in as the top Seed in the Group while Banija, as the 83rd ranked nation in the KPB Rankings were the fifth seed in a 10 nation group and experts giving them low odds of advancing through to the widely anticipated 'EqueStar' branded World Cup 80 Finals. With one win, two draws and a defeat in their first four match days, the Qualifying campaign had been going about how it would have been expected to for a mid ranked nation like Banija - but would seemingly get worse from there. Banija would drop 4 of their last five matches of the first half of World Cup 80 Qualifying and placed at the mid-way point as 8th in the table among the 10 teams competing for Group 10's two spots in the World Cup 80 Finals. For their part, Turori weren't looking too great either with four defeats as the groups #1 seed which left them on the outside looking in placed 5th after having played each other team in the group one time.

The second half was a much different story, however. Turori would open the second half with a perfect 4-0-0 record while Banija followed close behind at 3-1-0. After matchday 13 Turori had climbed up to 2nd in the table while Banija had moved up to 6th with the Orange "cut line" for the possibility of automatic qualification to World Cup 80 sneaking up right behind them. Incredibly, 83rd ranked Banija would keep the cut line at bay by winning their next 3 matches before hosting the Turori National Team on Match day 17 - the penultimate match day of World Cup 80 Qualifying. Banija would keep their winning streak alive with the stunning 1-0 upset of the Eels that would lift Banija up to 3rd position in Group 10. A Final match day draw with Ethane broke up Banija's impressive winning streak but their unbeaten second half in World Cup 80 Qualifying had sent The Kadongo Kamu along with the Eels to the World Cup 80 Playoffs. Having finished just 2 points clear of challengers Quakmybush, It was no doubt the penultimate match day victory over Turori that was the difference in Banija's ultimate qualification to the World Cup 80 Finals which they achieved with a 5-3 Aggregate victory over Mercedini in the playoff round.

Of course, Margaret is always just and fair if enough rubber chickens are sacrificed over a sufficient length of time, where time, number of chickens and definition of 'fair' being varied and unpredictable. Just one cycle later, Turori and Banija would meet in the World Cup 81 Knockout Rounds. Of course, when any Turorian fan thinks of World Cup 81, there is only one defining moment. It was Meldi'ita Mungwaii's famous goal in the 20th minute against Ethane that allowed Turori through to the World Cup Semi-Final for the first time in 65 Cycles after having failed to advance at the Quarter Final Stage on 11 previous occasions. Perhaps a lesser memory, however, is how the Eels first had to overcome a very promising Banija side in the Round of 16 just to get that opportunity to tear down that elusive barrier at the Quarter Final stage that had initially been constructed by such names as Rodolfo Puente and Igor Raskolnikov of Squornshelous during Turori's first Quarter Final Appearance 63 cycles prior in World Cup 18.

ImageImage

Of course, Turori was already aware that Banija was a foe far more menacing then their WCC Ranking had suggested. After being defeated by a Banija side that were ranked just 83rd in the multiverse during World Cup 80 Qualifying, Turori were not likely to be fooled by Banija's ranking of 32 in World Cup 81. After being separated by nearly 70 ranking positions one cycle prior, Banija and Turori were now separated by less than 20 and the gap would close even more at the conclusion of the tournament. The Kadongo Kamu were one of the high flying nations in the World Cup and ultimately their destiny was on a much different trajectory than that of the Eels.

Of course, it is easy for Turorian fans to forget about what happened to them after advancing past the Quarter Final stage for the first time. There was nothing good to remember about that day against their rival Jungle Cats who would score five times in an embarrassing rout that made some Eels fans wonder if Squornshelous had been right all those generations ago in their attempt to prevent Turori from ever reaching the Final Four of the World Cup. Perhaps Turori just were not a team meant to advance beyond the Quarter Finals. Over the next few cycles, fans of the Turori National Team and Nigel's Army would be forced to sit back and watch as the Nations they long battled with for the right just to reach the Quarter Final stage would break through and earn their own World Cup Medals. Farfadillis - whom Turori had exchanged blows with during World Cup 80 and World Cup 82 would go on to win World Cup 84 - the most recent held in Cassadaigua prior to World Cup 88, by defeating Turori's colonial rival the Vilita Jungle Cats in the Final. The very next cycle it would be the Free Republics who would win the World Cup Title in Farfadillis in what was perhaps one of the most difficult for Nigel's Army to swallow. The Turori National Team had squared off against the Free Republics in the Quarter Final of World Cup 85. It was their first Quarter Final appearance since World Cup 82 and the Eels entered the match as clear favorites over the 17th ranked Free Republics. Turori had come into the match with a perfect record at the World Cup Finals. They had knocked out host nation Farfadillis ending their rivals reign as World Cup Champions and looked destined to pick up the crown themselves. Their opponents, led by Rule Theriault, had barely even qualified for the World Cup Finals.

Turori would get early goals from Mbdiai Akarenaa and Nua'oma Aikiki while the Free Republics had been reduced to 10 players after an early red card. The stars were finally aligning for the Eels. Somehow, however, the Free Republics found a way back into the match during the second half and forced extra time. In a goal filled extra session, Turori once again seemed on their way taking a 4-3 lead into the second session of extra time but once again the Free Republics found an unlikely equalizer. Much like Turorian fans do not discuss what happened to them after their famous Quarter-Final victory over Ethane during World Cup 81, Turorian fans do not discuss what happened in the Penalty Shootout against the Free Republics at La Fantás. The so-called Stadium on Fire, home to the Farfadillis National Team - had certainly burned the Eels on this day. In a lopsided session which saw just one Turorian spot kick find the back of the net, The Eels run had come to the end and many feared the Squornshelan Wall had erected itself once more. The Free Republics would go on to defeat Banija in the Semi-Final on their way to their first World Cup Title. After winning the World Cup, the Republican team would immediately withdraw from future sporting competition, going out on Top. It was the fourth time in the previous seven World Cup Finals that Turori had been ousted by the eventual World Cup Champions - showing just how close and yet how agonizingly far they themselves were from that elusive trophy.

For Banija, however, all hope was not yet lost. After having also been casualties of the Free Republics unlikely run to the World Cup 85 Title, Banija came fighting back during World Cup 86 in Drawkland & Newmanistan. After an electric 7-6 Semi-Final victory over Farfadillis, Banija would go on to claim their first World Cup Title. The triumph for Banija was the culmination of a journey that took just six World Cup cycles. A journey that began with an often overlooked but critically important victory by Banija over the Turori National Team on the penultimate match day of World Cup 80 Qualifying. A result that propelled Banija into the World Cup Finals for the very first time and Would result in four semi-final appearances in six cycles and a World Cup title for the team from Southwestern Atlantian Oceania. A magical six cycles that established the nation that debuted in the 70's as one of the World Cup's great nations while Turori, a nation that debuted over 70 cycles prior still clung on to hope that it would one day be their turn to lift the great trophy as their rivals had done.

From their first Quarter Final Defeat in World Cup 18 to their first Quarter Final victory in World Cup 81, Turori's World Cup fate has seemingly centered around a common number - 8. The Turori National Team would get another chance under the guidance of Tarek Edgeli in World Cup 88. After a confident Quarter Final victory over Pasarga, Edgeli' Eels would advance to an All-Atlantian Oceania semi-final fixture at the Anomaly Tower in Chromia. Their opponent would be Banija. The Kadongo Kamu and the Eels whose fates had been loosely intertwined since Banija launched their way from 83rd in the Multiverse at the Start of the 8th Cyclic Decade of World Cup Competition and emerged by the middle of the 80's as World Cup Champion. It would return full circle as Turori looked to cash in their rubber chickens against Banija in the World Cup 88 Semi-Final in what many considered their best opportunity to avoid entering triple digit World Cup territory without a title.

The Kickoff :: Both teams would put strong lineups on the pitch with The Kadongo Kamu reporting no significant injury concerns before the match. As for Turori, Tarek Edgeli once again made the decision to keep veteran star striker Meldi'ita Mungwaii on the bench for the opening kick off though it was almost a certainty that Mungwaii would make their way onto the pitch at some point - perhaps even as early as the first half of play. While Edgeli hasn't revealed their rationale for the pattern of use - it has been rumored that Mungwaii's advancing age could be forcing the Turorians to reduce their time on pitch. Others suggest it could simply be a tactical decision by Edgeli to introduce Turori's best play-maker into the game at a point when the opposition has increased exhaustion levels. Either way, Mungwaii who has been impactful throughout the World Cup Finals as a substitute has still not themselves gotten onto the scoresheet.

Unlike during the Quarter Final victory over Pasarga, Turori's early press against The Kadongo Kamu did not result in any goals and the match settled in around the quarter hour mark after the initial surge had subsided. The Eels had managed 4 shots on goal in the opening 15 minutes in a flurry of activity but every chance was thwarted by François Tantoh in the Banijan goal. As a result of shutting down the Eels during their early offensive, Banija seemed to gain momentum as the first half went on, and it all culminated in the games first goal just before the half hour mark. Momodou Sene had the chance after a shot from Idai Uster was pushed aside by Turorian net-minder Wiyauw An'maude. Instead of shooting quickly from a tight angle, however, Sene side stepped a sliding Biliki Rona'atu'i and lined up a clear angle shot making no mistake and putting Banija into an early 1-0 lead.

When the ball hit the back of the net, Turorian head coach Tarek Edgeli wasted no time in signalling to Arlington City attacker Meldi'ita Mungwaii that it was time to warm up. Within minutes, Mungwaii was into the match having replaced the youngster Naraiza Ruaplal in a playmakers role behind the two forwards. Mungwaii's impact would be near immediate as within three minutes of entering the match, the Zwangzug based Turorian veteran had earned a free kick for the Eels in a fantastic position just outside the area after being taken down by Alanso Tibamba. Turori's two set piece specialists, Daliora Toru'u and Kentu Umaka'a, lined up behind the ball. Toru'u ran at the ball as if they were taking the delivery but merely whiffed at the sphere as Kentu Umaka'a followed just a pace behind. The Banijan wall had taken the bait and moved just enough to allow Umaka'a effort to squeak through as Tantoh was frozen in concrete having never seen the balls approach through the wall until it had already passed his reach. The goal came with just over five minutes left in the first half and served as a reset button for both sides who had struggled to hang on and deal with the swings in momentum that the first half had brought.

The Second Half :: The half time interval would see two changes when the teams came out of the tunnel and both were on the Banijan side. The veteran defender Tibamba who had earned a yellow card for their foul on Mungwaii at the end of the first half was removed in favor of Chiokie Uchie - likely out of an abundance of caution to protect against Banija falling down to ten men due to a second Tibamba offense. Uchie's familiarity with the opposition due to having played for Marine Coast United in the Vilitan League may also have been a favor in the move. The other change saw Kausu Dione replaced by the experienced Ilman Jawara with Banija looking to keep their attackers fresh without removing Idai Uster, the teams best Penalty taker, in the event the match needed more than 120 minutes to be settled.

If the Banijan substitutes had any say in the matter, however, the match would be done in the 90. Less than five minutes after being introduced, Uster latched on to a long ball delivery from Uchie that bounced fortuitously for the AFC Treason attacker. With An'maude committed to cutting down the angle for a shot from Uster, the Banijan forward smartly slotted the ball across to the unmarked Jawara who converted into the wide open net to restore the Banija's one-goal advantage. The Fresh-legged Kadongo Kamu controlled the play for the opening fifteen minutes of the first half until the momentum of the match changed completely on the hour mark after a corner kick delivery from Madu Okparra. As the delivery came in there was a clash between players of opposing teams in the penalty area and a mess of bodies landed atop of Turorian net-minder Wiyauw An'maude. Amidst the chaos, the ball had continued harmlessly out of play for a throw in to the opposite side but all attention was turned to the Turorian net minder. While not in any visible pain, it was clear that the Cedniavella Turori net minder had picked up a knock of some sort as the Turorian staff continued to liberally spray magical eel spray on the veteran keeper. After 3 minutes of spraying, the referees had had enough and indicated to the Turorian coaching staff that it was time to either let the keeper continue un-aided or make a change. After some deliberation, Edgeli decided to make a change.

This was exactly the moment that the Turorian Coaching staff had planned for when they decided to start Derizi Amatopa in all but two of the Turori National Citizen Squad's matches in the second half of World Cup Qualifying. They knew that they could not have a single point of failure in net. While Amatopa hadn't appeared for the Eels since the opening match of the World Cup 88 Group Stage - the Draw being Turori's only blemish thus far in the finals, The staff were confident they had done everything they could to ensure that the Di Bradini Cup champion was ready to put on the gloves in the World Cup Semi-Finals.

And they were right. While Banija's momentum was truly squelched during the downtime dealing with An'maude's injury, Amatopa was quickly called into action when play restarted and dealt comfortably with a mid-range shot by Mzukisi Nzo. Amatopa wasted no time in re-distributing the ball and Turori quickly progressed up field on a counter-attack catching some of the Banijan players out of position. The ball was on the feet of Mungwaii who then delivered perfectly to the run of long-time Jungle Strike FC teammate and known Turorian speedster Nua'oma Aikiki. The first touch was balanced perfectly to split the Banijan defense and the second touch put the ball into the back of the net levelling the scores at two goals a piece.

Image
It was truly Game On at that point as after having played long stretches in the shadows of their opponents, Edgeli's Eels had sprung to life and were applying pressure to the Banijan defense for the first time in the second half of play. Sensing an opportunity to capitalize on the momentum swing, Edgeli made a risk substitution to withdraw one of the Eels known set piece specialists in order to introduce more attacking presence in Yeaddin Owls forward Turakia Diijelhma. Whether Edgeli and Diijelhma had collectively made a large rubber chicken deposit before the match is unknown but Diijelhma's first touch of the ball came from a corner kick in the 73rd minute. The delivery from Toru'u was met cleanly by the head of Diijelhma and directed perfectly between the diving Tantoh and Samba Ogunsola who had been marking the far post and tried in vein to get an outstretched leg on the ball.

With Turori in front for the first time in the match but having sacrificed some of their defensive presence to get there, it was a nervy final fifteen minutes for Tarek Edgeli and the Turorian sideline. They had plenty of quivers in their satchel but no authority to use them. Having gone through each of their substitutions there was nothing they could do but sit back and watch. Turori attempted to keep up the pressure and defend through possession and attacking pressure but it was not enough to keep Banija from getting quality chances down the stretch. The final saving grace for the Eels was Amatopa. The 21 year-old goalkeeper starlet from Revolutionaries in Eura was able to deny two odds-on chances from The Kadongo Kamu in the closing minutes including a highlight-reel save on a stoppage time header from Babaja Mboob off a corner kick that seemed destined to send the match into extra time.

When the Full Time whistle blew, the exhausted Turorian players celebrated in relief. It had come full circle for Turori as they had defeated the team they had opened the door for in World Cup 80 and in doing so, opened a door for themselves. The chance to redeem their lopsided catastrophic defeat in the World Cup 82 final had finally arrived and Nigel's Army, having already filled up numerous hotels in downtown Chromia, were ready in numbers to support their Eels in their quest to finally level up and achieve the ultimate prize in sports.

After escaping with a victory over Banija at the Anomaly Tower in Chromia, Tarek Edgeli will become just the second Turori National Team coach in history to lead the Turori National Team out onto the pitch for the World Cup Final and will certainly be looking to do one better than their predecessor in terms of on-field success in the biggest match the multiverse has to offer. As was the case for the Semi-Finals, Edgeli's Eel's won't have far to go when it comes to travel for the Championship match as they will, for the third straight game, be playing in Chromia - Capital City of Chromatika. Despite the very welcome fact that the Eels don't have to relocate their living quarters, there will be very little in terms of similarities between the venue the Eels played their Semi-Final match at - Anomaly Tower, and the venue for the World Cup 88 Final, the Capitalizt Dome.
Image

As the name may suggest, the pitch at Anamoly Tower was built into the tenth floor of a large restaurant complex serving up a very unique atmosphere. Some might even consider it an Anomaly among footballing venues - even in Chromatika. The World Cup 88 Final, however, will be contested at one of the most traditional - and largest venues in all of Chromatika, the Capitlizt Dome. One of the few stadium that is dedicated solely for the purpose of Footballing, it is the home of the Chromatika National Team and hosts other major Football matches throughout the season. The Capitalizt Dome has been standing by in the shadows awaiting its moment as the Crowning Jewel of World Cup 88 with the organizers having opted to forgoe hosting any Group or Knockout Stage matches at the venue as the prepared it for the pomp and circumstance that is sure to accompany the greatest match in the multiverse.

The Turori National Team's opponent for the World Cup 88 Final will be The Holy Empire. The team from the Dreamed Realm will be making their 10th appearance in the World Cup Final and will be looking to further solidify their claim as the best Team in the modern era of the World Cup - a title which the arguably hold already before stepping foot into the Capitalizt Dome for the World Cup 88 Final.

Despite having competed in the very First World Cup in Ariddia - and even having welcome the Footballing Nations of the Multiverse to The Holy Empire to contest World Cup #2 - the history of Football in the Dreamed Realm can very easily be divided Nicely in 2 Equal Halves. There are the 44 Cups that took place between World Cup 1 through World Cup 44, and the forty-four editions since from World Cup 45 through World Cup 88.

This is because it was in World Cup 45 that The Holy Empire made their very first appearance in the World Cup Final. While they may have lost to Candelaria and Marquez in that Cup they would get their revenge just three cycles later defeating Candelaria and Marquez to win World Cup 48. In the second half of Current World Cup History, No team has won more World Cup Titles (4) Than have the team from the Dreamed Realm. In Fact, the Holy Empire have been such a formidable power on the World Stage since their first appearance in the World Cup 45 Final, when they grace the field at the Capitalizt Dome they will be setting an all-time Record for most World Cup Final appearances despite having utilized just half of all available World Cup cycles to accomplish the feat.

Having finished Third place in World Cup 87, the team from the Dreamed Realm are already assured at least one better this cycle as they continue to chip away at the honor of the World Cup's Greatest Team in History. With their performance in World Cup 88, The Holy Empire are already assured to be within just two hypothetical cycles reach of the World Cup's current All-Time Leader in the SRS Ranking System, Valanora. In fact, The Holy Empire are the only nation within the Top 10 of the All-Time SRS rankings to have been inducted into the World Cup Hall of Fame in the second half of current World Cup History (Post-World Cup 44) further spotlighting the magnitude of their accomplishments since World Cup 45. All that to say it will not be an easy day for Tarek Edgeli and the Turori National Team at the Capitalizt Dome, but if their current all-time best streak of results says anything about the Turori National Team, it certainly shows that they will give it their all as they look to put aside Generations of living in the Shadow of their Colonial Neighbors to the South West.

While The Holy Empire may be favored on paper, their uncertain travel path from Rushmore to Chromatika may give the Eels a slight edge in mental preparedness at kickoff time. Turori will look to erase the memory of previous World Cup Finals meetings with the Holy Empire, such as the lopsided 4-1 World Cup 80 Quarter Final defeat. Of course, Turori did have one slightly positive historical result against The Holy Empire, earning a consolation victory in the 5th Eagles Cup Competition - Bronze Medal Game, surviving through a hotly contested penalty shootout to claim the first in a string of Bronze Medals at the Eagle's Club facility in Eelandii, Turori. Of course, for Turori, none of those matches were against a Cuddly Cthulhu and his Playful Pals - so perhaps there is no meaningful comparison to draw between the two sides. Only one thing is known and that is that neither side have yet lost a match in Chromatika or Cassadaigua during World Cup 88 but only one can emerge Victorious in the Final.

Eelandii Multi-Purpose Arena, Eelandii, Turori :: It has been revealed that the Eelandii Multiple-Purpose Arena is among the finalists being considered as the host of the upcoming Atlantian Oceania Championships of Curling to be contested at the upcoming AOlympic Games: Team Challenge competition. The Multi-Purpose Arena is one of the newest venues in the Sportropolis of Eelandii and was a by-product of the discussions surrounding the construction of the Eelandii IcePlex and whether or not that facility would gain enough use year-round to justify its construction. One of the alternative proposals to the dedicated Ice Hockey arena was a multi-purpose arena that had an adjustable configuration of which one of the configurations would be the Ice Hockey configuration required for Eelandii to host a Vilitan Hockey League franchise. In the end, Eelandii planners decided there was enough justification for the stand-alone IcePlex but enjoyed the idea of the Multi-Purpose venue so much they eventually built that too. The "Empa" as it is affectionately called was designed to be used for a wide variety of purposes by adjusting the two movable stands on either rounded side of the arena to create a seating configurations optimized for the size and shape of the activity required. In its most flexible configuration, the EMPA can hold over 12,000 fans surrounding two full size sheets of ice which will be perfect for configuring a series of Curling Sheets for the completiong of a full Curling Competition under a single roof. While the Eelandii Multiple-Purpose Arena has never previously held an internationstatal Curling competition, it was used as the hub for the Bandy Demonstration Events during the 14th Winter Olympic Games.

If Eelandii is to be the host site of the fourth Atlantian Oceania Championships of Curling, however, it may face stiff competition from the Republic of Pacitalia. Pacitalia - a nation perhaps best known for its long time dominance of the AOCAF competition as its all-time winningest participant, has hosted all three previous editions of Atlantian Oceania's premier curling event.

The Atlantian Oceania Championships of Curling will be just one of an estimated ten events to be held as part of the AOlympic Games: Team Challenge. Each event will stand alone as the next iteration of a variety of popular regional secondary competition while also awarding Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in the official AOlympic Table. Confirmed events to be held as part of the AOlympic Team Challenge are: Auto Racing (AOMC), Baseball (AOBS), Basketball (AOBC), Curling (AOCC), Gridiron (AOBowl), Ice Hockey (AOHC) and Lacrosse (AOLC) as well as debut events in Rugby (AORC) and Track & Field. The 10th core event along with host nations for each competition have yet to be announced.

Dear GOOFI,

Firstly, to address your most important concern regarding Banija's Kuma Bultum - I am unfortunately unable to discern whether or not they are a cultist. Your suspicion may be accurate as one would expect you could not gain the title of "Captain of the Kadongo Kamu" without being a cultist. That said, my interactions with the player during the recent World Cup Semi-Final match between Turori and Banija were limited to a distance. I could ask some of my players who were on the pitch if they have any further insight, or, perhaps your new friend Coothulhu can do some reconnaissance for you during Banija's Third Place Playoff match in Cassadaigua.

Secondly, regarding your offer of friendship - of course, I would love to be friends and meet with you and formally join with your Great Old Ones Friends Initiative (GOOFI). Just reach out to me when you arrive in Chromia and we can identify a suitable location to partake in the sustinence. If you and your friends arrive early enough perhaps we can meet up before the match at the Capitalizt Dome. Otherwise, I'm sure we could find some time afterwards. I have heard you recently had an enjoyable outing with our Cocoabo Squad. They are quite the bunch though I may offer a word of advice - I am not as cuddly as the Cocoabo are nor are any of my Citizen Squad players. I am not sure which of my players will be up for tea and crumpets prior to the match but I will extend the offer to them as well.

Thirdly, regarding your questions on Nigel and other inquiries regarding the forces that control the Island Emirate of Turori, I suspect you will agree that these will make for some quite lively discussions while indulging in Tea and Crumpets so I dare not spoil any of the answers via this rudimentary communication. Of course, one thing need not be spoiled and we can clearly agree that Turori is just the bestest nation ever! Maybe not in anything in particular but we certainly try and that has got to count for something right?

Fourthly, regarding your invitation to Nig'el. I will say, there are no guarantees in this ordinary world. I can neither confirm nor deny whether or not there is a means by which the entity portrayed in the invitation could either receive or accept such an invitation. However, as I have said previously, if there is one thing us Turorians now how to do, we know how to try and try I shall. As a backup plan I may inquire within Nigel's Army if there are any particularly well outfitted supporters of the Turori National Team that would like to join. You may have already seen some of them in the stands out our matches - Nigel Green from Head to Toe. Some refer to them as Furries although I'm not sure how Furry an Eel could be. Here in Turori, we love them all the same, they are our fans and they are the reason we are here today. It would not be fitting to leave them out of such an occasion.

Fifthly, regarding your question on why more folks have not joined up to GOOFI I will say, just give it some time. Here in the ordinary world, some folks are more outgoing and some like to keep to themselves. Some seek out friendships and others like to avoid new things. I suspect our friends at Cocoa-bo and twii.tur could help in presenting the GOOFI in a positive light to their large multiverse-wide base of users and product consumers. The recent interaction between GOOFI and Turori's National Cocoabo Squad may be the perfect exemplar of this. In fact I have seen already some mock up designs that Cocoa-bo would like to use in an upcoming campaign "Friends of Cocoa-bo" campaign where they wish to portray their brick-and-mortar Cocoa-bo locations as the "Place where Friendships are made". I would suggest permitting the use of imagery from your exchange with the Cocoabo Squad in this campaign would quickly encourage many others to join up with the Great Old Ones Friends Initiative.

Image

Sixthly, I must say I will have some questions of my own when we are able to meet up! I am a former player on the Turori National Team and have suffered through some many heartaches in my time such as losing out to the Cocoabo Squad during World Cup 80 Qualifying and then having to watch from home as the team from the Dreamed Realm knocked those Cocoabo out of the World Cup at the Quarter Final Stage in what was quite an ugly defeat. Those silly fluffy bunnies made quick work of our Cocoabo scoring four goals and would make it all the way to the World Cup Final. Perhaps there are some similarities between that team and the team you now have. While your National Team has had many players represent it over the years, one thing remains constant and that is the presence of World Cup Hall of Fame Legend Juan Tzimisces as the team coach. As a comparatively inexperienced National Team Coach, I would love to meet Mr. Tzimisces in whatever form possible outside of the Touchline at the Capitalizt Dome. Four World Cup Titles. 17 Medals earned for finishing on the World Cup Podium. Win, Lose or Draw I am certain there is much I could learn from such an experienced World Cup Legend and it would be such an honor if they could attend our friendship gathering as well.

Finally, my apologies if this letter was longer than expected. It has been a long hard road for my team in getting to this point. I suppose I could have just replied with "Yes, see you in Chromia" but if we are to be friends, we may as well get started now. It has been tough for our players this extended trip in an uncertain and unknown land and your gift of 100 plush cuddly Cthulhu toys has brought them great joy. Those with children back home in Turori can not wait to share the cuddles with them.

See you soon-

Tarek Edgeli
Turori National Team Head Coach

p.s. I look forward to our meeting in Chromia - but if it does not happen until after the match, then best of luck in the game as well.

Dear Tarek Edgeli

Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow! We're ever so excited about your letter! Yes! Let's be friends! Let's meet up in Chromia before the match and show the whole multiverse that World Cup finalists can be friends instead of rivals!

We're just so excited! We might even get to meet Nig'el, the Dread Eel Lord! We hope he can make it! But at the very least we'll meet members of Nigel's Army! Just so long as they're not mad cultists, mind. We're a bit suspicious of mad cultists, what with their attempts to rouse us from our slumber and everything.

We're also ever so happy to join the "Place where Friendships are made" campaign! The cocoabo birds were super-fluffy and friendly, and if you think it will lead to more people joining GOOFI, that's so super! You know what ordinary mortals like better than we do, so let's give it a try!

Also, Mr Tzimisces will come to the party too! He was a bit reluctant at first, but he's even agreed to bring a detailed tactical outline of how the Holy Empire are going to play in the final! He said it was "more than a little idiotic to give Turori such a significant tactical advantage", but we told him it was the friendly thing to do to help you, what with you being 'a comparatively inexperienced National Team Coach', and everything! He said "alright then; your funeral", but we don't know what he meant by that; Great Old Ones and Elder Gods don't have funerals.

So yes, let's meet up in Chromia!

Hurrah!

Your new friends in GOOFI

Dear World Cup Committee,

Have you noticed that four of the last 12 World Cups have been won by nations where Cocoa-bo is either produced or represent a nation with close political links to the producers? Or that even entities that profess friendship with Turori have speculated that the new World Cup champions are 'controlled by a secret cabal of shadowy corporations who use the island emirate as a front for the distribution of the beverage known ... as 'Cocoa-bo"'.

I'm just asking questions, that's all.

Yours,

Sir Barsanuphius the Bold
