Please read the following before posting

The CAFA Cup is Anaia’s Regional Championship for Association Football. It is open to nations in the Anaia Region, provided that they were a member of the region at the time this was posted.

To sign up, please post in this thread with your roster information. Sign-ups without a roster will not be accepted, and posting placeholders (i.e. “reserved for roster information”) are looked at poorly.

Puppet Entries: Users may enter up to two nations, provided they were both in the Anaia region at the time that this post was created. In their signup/roster post, users must indicate that their second nation -- typically called a puppet -- as such. Undeclared puppets who do not comply with this rule may have all nations associated with their user removed from the tournament.

SAVIGLIANE NATIONAL TEAM ROSTER
CAFA CUP I

The Swans seem to be finding another gear under Tlanx-Nulzk Hal, as surprisingly good defending fueled a shock upset over Kelssek that sent Savigliane to the Round of 16. Although the team fell to Starblaydia in a hard-fought 4-3 loss, the knockout berth is a landmark both in the present (it’s the nation’s first-ever knockout appearance in the World Cup) and in the future (it’s likely secured a Pot-1 seeding next cycle in qualifiers). But with key players such as Pietro Giraudo and Amara Vatrican aging, will they be able to build on their success? Tlanx is betting big on a squad with more youth than the WC roster, but only time will tell if it’ll pay off. Some more information about Savigliane can be found in my first-ever WCQ RP or the RP lines in my Factbooks. Essentially, the nation has been teleported to the NS world from an IRL equivalent and is still working through the fallout of that event.

After taking a sabbatical to reexamine their priorities in the wake of Qusmo's collapse, Tlanx-Nulzk has returned — & they like to attack as much as ever. They posted some of the highest-scoring seasons in the history of Pug Qusmyra. Under their stewardship, Qastyr – coming from a nation that had never before advanced beyond the first preliminary round of the Champions' Cup – not only got to the Champions' Cup 72 group stage, but rode the highest-scoring attack in the group stage out of all thirty-two teams in the tournament to win a group featuring Spartangrad, Brinemouth, & Tanrisal, en route to a shock quarterfinals run. As a result, they came from nowhere to be named a surprise selection for KarlingSport Galacticos Manager of the Season. Admittedly, their back line hasn't always been a strong suit, but they are remarkably efficient at getting their midfielders & forwards in sync for ruthless attacks. They were noted at their last post, as Saltstead's national team manager, for a sense of humour, memorably playing along with The Beet's request that they be set on fire. Perhaps that belies their competitive spirit, but make no mistake: they're friendly, jovial, & fun to be around off the pitch; on it, they're nothing short of ruthless. Recently sacked by Parakleion Firebirds after a dismal start to the season, Giuliani vacates the hole left by the departure of Natalia Rossi to Kelssek’s Kirkenes FC. Giuliani is a talented young manager best known for turning EDC Fossano, previously a yo-yo club who played a dour, defensive style, into an attack-minded midtable club within three years. An excellent man-manager and tactician (offensively), Giuliani is now looking to make the next step.

TACTICS

"TlanxBall", a dynamic 4-3-3 setup, promised - and immediately delivered - attractive results. In possession, the focus will be on retaining possession and moving the ball forward vertically, with Auvergne and Toscani aggressively pushing forwards with the ball or using diagonal passes when they can. In build-up, Buvalelli will drop back to form a triangle with the other center-backs, with the fullbacks drifting in and out to serve as wide options to carry the ball up the flanks if necessary.

The aim while in possession will be to rapidly shift the ball forward before using quick interchanges and dynamic movement in the attacking third of the pitch. To aid this, the inside forwards (and occasionally the midfielders, especially Toscani, who will have more of a free role) will go wide and into the half-spaces to stretch the opposition defense before playing back through the center or switching play to the now-exposed opposite flank.

Defensively, Savigliane will play a relatively high line, aiming to compress the opposition's build-up toward the sidelines and pressing immediately after losing the ball. The Swans will rely on the pace and tactical instincts of their back four to cover what is a pretty attack-minded "front six", especially since both fullbacks will both be pushing forward if necessary to maintain dynamism in possession.

Tlanx-Nulzk’s system has taken significant adjustment to work with the Swans - although, with a dominant qualifying record, the results are undeniable. The free-flowing nature of the attack means that the team may struggle to keep their opponents out of goal this cycle. However, they’ll more than make up for it with dynamic, fast-paced, free-flowing attacking play that could make them one of neutrals’ more favored teams in Legalese.

Recently-Quebecois DuCasse is a much stronger and more consistent distributor than the other options here, although his highs aren’t quite as high as WC starter D’Ambrosio, and he’s a relatively weak shot-stopper at this level.Fasano is a strong aerial presence and shot-stopper whose main strength is her agility, although she's not much of a distributor. Finally, Fontaine is more of a sweeper-keeper, although she can play a little too riskily at times.

Lamontagne, who unexpectedly became one of Savigliane’s most-sought-after players in the most recent transfer window, is known for her deceptive athleticism, coolness under pressure, tactical intelligence, and versatility. Blanco, replacing the aging fan favorite Efisio Moreau, will serve as the brawn to Giraudo’s brain - quick, aerially adept, and hard-working, she was one of Lega 2's best-kept secrets until her move abroad. Meanwhile, Garcia is the quickest of the back line, and the one in the highest demand this transfer window before a big-money move to Mozi - while still occasionally prone to mistakes while on the ball, her athleticism and man-marking capabilities make her a valuable, versatile asset to the national team. Finally, Vitale is more explosive than the rest of the fullbacks, and her crossing and shooting ability make her more of a direct threat when attacking. A converted winger, she’s not particularly good tracking back, although her athleticism gets her some of the way there. She's capable of playing in a number of different positions on the right flank, and will be more at home in this newly attack-minded formation.

Garofano is a polished - but overly defensive - fullback with strong positioning and tackling; although he’s not a great fit for Tlanxball, he’s simply been too good (compared to the other fullback options) to leave off. Young LeClerc is sharp, athletic, and versatile (serving as both a center-back and right-back for Trinité), but not polished enough with the ball to earn a starting spot yet. Gianmarco Dutto is a strong but slow-footed center-back whose biggest strength is his ability to distribute from the back - it’s early, for sure, but he’s already being tipped as a potential successor to ball-playing center-back Pietro Giraudo. Sauvageon, somewhat similarly to Giovanna Vitale, is a high-flying, aggressive fullback who needs to work on her defensive discipline in Chromatika - but serves as a useful “break in case of emergency” if Savigliane is trailing.

Auvergne, who’s excelled at Hofvinger this season, is a young talent whose creativity, passing touch, and physicality make him an incredible prospect despite his lack of speed. Buvalelli unexpectedly broke into Alessandro Juliana’s first team in Audioslavia’s National League, and although temperamental, his deep-lying playmaking has made him Pietro Giraudo’s heir apparent at the senior level. Toscani is a technically gifted young midfielder who, despite not being particularly athletic, has already impressed in his short time at Porto Vecchio, earning himself a transfer to Caza in the process. He’s capable of playing as a center-midfielder, an attacking-midfielder, or, thanks to his surprisingly good crossing ability, on the wing.

Chastain is unpolished, often lacks focus, and is prone to fouling, but genuinely one of Savigliane's best when she's on, with the kind of passing vision, defensive positioning, and athleticism that make us reach for the Bianca Fiore comparisons despite an underwhelming start to her La Nueva Avenida career. Castagne’s breakout season was one reason why Stade-Ferre won their first league title in decades, as the hometown hero impressed with his intelligence, physicality, tactical versatility, and leadership ability that belies his young age. Bella, the young player of the year in Savigliane, is known for his creativity and flair with the ball, and surprisingly high workrate (somewhat compensating for his lack of athleticism) without it.

Roux is an incredible dribbler with sometimes inaccurate but sometimes incredible passing ability and a left foot that produces magical free-kicks and long-range shots. She's rapidly growing into one of Savigliane's Next Big Things. Squarciafichi, while still unpolished, is a predatory finisher. Although a solid dribbler, her best runs are off the ball, and her passing is definitely a work in progress. Montevecchi is a surprisingly good playmaker for a winger, and has flirted with an attacking-midfield role. Nevertheless, her biggest asset is her pace and ability to cut inside into dangerous positions, while her weakness is her inability to contribute on the defensive end.

Young Bonaguinta Rossi came out of nowhere with ACAB (replacing Rinaldi, who left for Graintfjall) to score an incredible twenty goals - one for each year of his life - in 29 SavigLega appearances. His best asset is his absolutely lethal pace and skill, although he’s a bit skinny and a legendarily bad teammate. Rinaldi, although injury-prone, broke out with ACAB due to his aerial prowess and consistently confident finishing in the penalty box. Collomb, known for a methodical, deliberate style of play, is a strong passer and finisher most at home setting up teammates.

I reserve the right to make minor “corrections”/disagreements in my narrative when it comes to my team (like, say, “reports of Xavier Boyle’s death were mildly exaggerated -- he’ll miss the next match”), but otherwise, you do you. The bid to host the Inaugural CAFA Cup Tournament in Legalese

About Legalese: Legalese is a gargantuan, socially progressive nation, known for their massive bureaucracy, high income rates, even higher distribution of income, and occasionally, their footballing prowess. Despite their early start, Legalese tends to be one of the lesser-recognized of the Bekkside nations, aside such greats as ~~West Starblaydia~~ Krytenia and ~~East Krytenia~~ Starblaydia; in terms of footballing, Legalese’s greatest playing achievement is winning the 55th Cup of Harmony, which they had the decency to do in the same cycle as their other hallowed neighbor, Audioslavia, happened to win their first World Cup.

That said, Legalese is known for welcoming the world on occasion for a football tournament or two. They’ve hosted multiple World Cups, AOCAFs, Baptisms of Fire, and Cups of Harmony, and are not afraid to try something a little different where it’s needed.

So, with all of this history and overshadowing, the Federation (with encouragement from Legalese’s Head of Government and State, Director-General Abigail Calvetti, who also happens to have been born in Audioslavia, because sure, why not) has decided that they want to have their own first to politely smile about in private: hosting the first CAFA Cup.

Bid Details

Format and Schedule: The intent is to keep things somewhat standard on this front. A group stage of single-round-robin action, followed by a knockout stage. I have a number of formats in mind depending on the size of the competition, but the priority (in order) is:

All groups will have the same size
If possible, group numbers will be some version of 2ⁿ (that is, 2, 4, or 8 groups -- 16 not impossible, but unlikely given the expected field size)
Everyone will get at least three games in any format

EDIT: Based on current numbers and likely expected additional sign ups, here's what I'm looking at for formats, within these numbers:
- 16 Teams: 4 groups of 4, top 2 per group to quarterfinals, fixed bracket based on group draw.
- 18 Teams: 3 groups of 6, top 4 advance to knockouts; group winners + top 2nd-place by points to quarterfinal, rest to first round.
- 20 Teams: 4 groups of 5, top 2 per group to quarterfinals, fixed bracket based on group draw.
- 21 Teams: 3 groups of 7, top 4 advance to knockouts; group winners + top 2nd-place by points to quarterfinal, rest to first round.
- 22 Teams (Sigh): 2 groups of 11, group winners meet in the final, 2nd place sides in 3PPO.
- 24 Teams: 4 groups of 6, top 3 per group advance to knockouts; group winners to quarterfinal, rest to first round.

Tiebreakers: Teams within their group will be sorted by: Points, Goal Difference, H2H Points, H2H Goal Difference, Coin Flip/Drawing of Lots. In the case of a multi-way tie, H2H Points and H2H GD will be determined first among all participants; if that eliminates one team in the results, the remaining teams will be reconsidered on H2H Points and GD among remaining participants first before proceeding to a Coin Flip/Drawing of Lots. If a multi-way tie proceeds to Coin Flip/Drawing of Lots, the order of all teams left at that point will be decided by the draw.

If seeding is needed for the knockout rounds, teams will be sorted by Group Position (Group winners, then runners ups, then on down), Points, Goal Difference, then a Coin Toss or Drawing of Lots; however, should we have 2/4/8 groups, seeding won’t be used -- slots in the knockouts will be pre-drawn based on group position.

Schedule: The goal is to have all matches take place over a RL two-week period, with a preference towards scorination every two days. If more than seven matchdays are required under the format, there may be some tweaking to the every-two-days if necessary.

Scorination: Using Google Scripts to generate scores in a Google Sheet format. As this is the inaugural tournament, all teams will be unranked.

Here’s a sample version of the scorinator to try out. The actual scorinator will be this script, but in a sheet organized to incorporate the bonuses

RP Bonus: As I mentioned above, RP bonus is given out in form of attacks, but here’s how it’s scored:
Rosters will be scored as up to 1 point, based on information level. There’s technically no roster penalty, other than a team that doesn’t submit a roster before the draw is not accepted into the tournament.
RPs will be scored for every scorination window, with two points per window. This will include two pre-MD1 windows -- a pre-draw and a post-draw window, which will both be 24-48 hours long. To get the full two points, your post(s) for the day should be interesting, informative, and/or entertaining.

In addition, there will be a special bonus: Make it a Breve.
For each scorination window, there will be a brevity bonus:
RPs at or below 300 words earn an additional 0.5 point
RPs between 301 words and 500 can receive up to 0.25 points

Teams are eligible for the brevity bonus if they include no more than one picture. Words on the picture won’t count towards the word count, unless the host believes it’s a blatant attempt to circumvent the word count.

Bonuses are cumulative. The five attacks will be given out to each team as follows for scorination purposes:
Additional attacks = 「5 * (R_Y/(R_Y+R_O)」
(i.e., your total bonus and your opponent's are added up, and yours is divided by that then multiplied by five, removing any fraction)

Other details: All matches will be held in Legalese, with the Final at National Stadium in Legalese City, most recently host to the World Cup 68 Final. Since everyone is unranked, the hosts will not have any bonuses applied to them as well. Should I make the knockout rounds, I will request that a fellow Anaian serve as a neutral scorinator for any matches I’m in from that point forward.

So, Why?

Why are you doing this? OOCly, because it’s been awhile and thought it might be fun; because I want to try out different scorination ideas, and a regional competition makes sense for that.
Why the word count rules? 1) To give a fun challenge with some incentive, while also not being too strict about the consequences; 2) To put a unique spin on the CAFA, rather than it being just another football tournament; 3) Ultimately, the regionals act as the pause between World Cups -- a shorter word count (IMO) can take some of the pressure off.

Marking its first foray into international football, the Kotzellachian Football Association (KFV Kotzellacheriche Fußballverand) has decided to join the first incarnation of the CAFA Cup. While having previously made its intentions known to join the next edition of the AOCAF Cup, geopolitical events have changed those plans slightly and now Kotzellach finds itself in Anaia, with a venerable bunch of footballing nations surrounding it. Hopes and expectations are low — the team are minnows in a field of titans — but there is, as always, a sense of hope in the country who might be more than a bit tired of constantly having to look out for themselves in a sea of trading partners.

Veteran manager Bernard Schöber has been tasked with taking the team as far as possible in this tournament; the wily old fox (befitting the national animal) prefers a solid, defense-first approach, overloading the midfield; fortunately, the crop of players he has been blessed with — an abundance of talent in midfield, and a striker who can make magic happen — might just let something occur. Employing a 4-5-1, the Red Foxes look set to be nimble on the ball, rarely taking more than a couple of touches, always keeping the ball moving when they have it.

Goalkeepers

Long-time custodian and veteran goalkeeper Leonard Kirschner might have felt that he had the n.1 position on lock, what with his safe hands and all, but a lengthy injury layoff and protracted recovery period, plus a less-than-convincing performance between the sticks for Gleikinger has led Schöber to name Sophia Zeidler to the number 1 spot. Acrobatic, good at getting the ball out quick to her team-mates near her and a penchant for parrying the ball, Zeidler is an unknown quantity with the national team but has performed remarkably for Kotzellach City's number two team. Kirschner still tags along, though his influence might be more in the dressing room than on the pitch. Regardless, if he needs to step in, he will perform to his best. A more traditional keeper, Kirschner excels at fingertip saves; though his jumping ability might have slightly waned, Kirschner still is able to pull a shift when needed. A penalty-saving master.

Norman Vogel won the battle to be the third goalkeeper on the squad over Kurt Schilling and Keith Bormann, both Tumbra-based goalkeepers who flew the roost in order to possibly enhance their playing prospects, but is mostly here for the ride. If called upon though, the young goalkeeper certainly is one of the new age of goalkeepers who prefer playing through their feet; though possibly his skills with his hands have suffered in return.

Defenders

On the left flank, there exists vice captain Hannelore Knauer, a leader on and off the pitch, has proven a bit of a bugbear for the government with her tireless advocacy for social justice and various other causes; on field she is just as tireless. Preferring to hang back and tackle, moving into the midfield when necessary, she does have it in her to make runs forth and cross the ball into the box. Her great strength, however, is in her knowledge of the game and in her defensive nous. Fabian Höhn, a promising wonderkid ruined by injuries, makes the team; however Knauer is simply on a different level to him. He is, however, still a hard worker; it is, though, a real pity that his prodigious speed and acceleration have been ruined by constant muscle issues in his left leg. A real case of what could have been for the experienced defender.

On the right, Lara Balzer is the more offensive of the two wingbacks, though that is by no means implying she is inclined at any moment to play an offensive game; she is much more comfortable, too, in the defence. The only difference is that she sometimes breaks the low line the Kotzellachian defence offers and ventures forth a bit more; though with Schöber's more rigid form of defensive football, that is rare. Is particularly good at tracking and screening opponents, forcing them into giving up goal kicks; she is also the designated throw-in player. Vince Ries, a converted midfielder, enjoys playing in his old position; though the solid if unspectacular rightback enjoys a good tackle on the right flank, as well.

In the middle, Anthony Starke and Moritz Engels are both heavy hitters; a tall duo, both will seek to close down opponents in the air and dominate that part of the pitch, especially on corners. While their approach to defending might seem outdated in the modern era, it works for them. Both aren't shy to use their height and stature to intimidate opponents either. Their weaknesses are probably their creative touch. Don't expect them to begin attacks, rather passing the ball back to Zeidler or to the sides in Knauer or Balzer. This gap in the squad is filled by their understudies Sandra Koller and particularly Lynette Bolz, who has been named the next big thing in Kotzellachian defending and a natural evolution from a physical to a more technical game.

Midfielders

There are many types of defensive midfielders, but skipper Franz Preuß plays as a half-back, and will drop into the defence as necessary. A solid, seemingly unspectacular, yet extremely important and technically gifted player, Preuß serves as the beating heart of both the five-man midfield and of the team as a whole. Captain of 1. FC Kotzellach, Preuß has been given the captain's armband here as well; his decision-making will be key in whether Kotzellach make it out of the group stages at all. Ermengarde Forster and Sebastian Borchert are both more advanced midfielders; both fit into the mold of the deep-lying playmaker. Borchert in particular is particularly talented at free kicks; expect him to take a majority of them. Foster has an eye for goal, and sometimes looks to shoot instead of the pass if she makes it into the box. Otherwise, they will look to shoot long balls, bypassing the opposition midfield in possession. Out of it, the three will press advancing midfielders quite heavily, with Foster and Borchert utilising their underrated pace to get to their opponent quickly.

Of the backups, Christine Eberle is a passable backup for Preuß, but really should spend more time on the bench — Preuß simply offers too much to the team to be dropped, much like Knauer in defence. Tom Brauer would be a starter in this team — he plays for one of Tumbra's big six teams, after all — but his lack of starts for Straton has led to his match fitness being called into question. A more passing-and-running player, Brauer fits more into the Tumbran mold of a pacesetting player, recycling possession and splaying balls out wide and forward if necessary. Young gun Tamara Gerhardt doesn't necessarily fit into Schöber's formation or plans, but the dynamic, unpredictable midfielder can spring surprises out of nowhere.

Wingers

The 4-5-1 Schöber utilises prioritises more defensive wingers; they are more wide midfielders than proper wingers, only pushing forth when really needed. The two wide midfielders, Sabine Krüger and Klara Winter, fit this notion to a tee; this despite Winter playing a more advanced role for her club on the right. The 21 year-old, however, is extremely adaptable and has been employed everywhere on the right flank for Runtenbach; expect her to be making most attacking runs on the flanks, and joining the striker in the box, almost transforming the formation into a 4-4-2. Krüger is a more patient player, playing in the Brauer role on the left; though she has a mean cross and is able to control the ball extremely well.

Backups Philip Heine and Dominic Trautmann are both more traditional wingers; if either of them start, it'll signal a shift in Schöber's priorities to attack more.

Strikers

Sigismund Weller is the only, and some would say, most important man up front; despite being only 24, the striker has battled his way into the starting lineup by virtue of his strong finishing ability; his height also counts for him, in a team which enjoys dominance of the air. His ability to dribble has also earned plaudits, though it does rank as a bit lower than his skills at finishing or heading. An always-potent threat in the six yard box, Weller is equally adept at both of his feet. His first touch, however, is a bit doubtful; his positioning also gets caught out sometimes, with him having had several goals ruled offside over the previous league season.

Alexander Heinemann prefers to play a bit deeper than Weller, and is a bit better at carrying the ball; however, as he grows a bit older, he has lost a bit of his pace. Still electrifying, however, Heinemann can completely change the dynamic of a game if subbed on. Also able to put in a shift on the right, and in the hole behind the striker, Heinemann is a bit of a utility man for the team; that versatility might prove worthwhile to surprising opponents.

Setup

The team plays a 4-5-1, though 4-4-2 and 4-1-4-1 and 4-4-1-1 isn't out of the question either; the only constant is the low line and willingness to soak up attacks, then using long balls to begin quick counters. Out of possession, heavy pressing is utilised; Kotzellachian players tend to enjoy closing down opponents, particularly on the wings. Attacking centrally is the key here; but an overloaded midfield will force teams to skip the midfield and go straight for the defence.

Imagine a classically warm nation with beautiful scenery, olive trees, and most of all, delicious noodle-based foods that have become so engulfed in the country's tradition that every surname in the country is, at the very least, some kind of foodstuff. It's a Cucinan thing. It's a very idyllic place to live, and one that, post-Relocation, found itself with lots of neighbours. When they did find out that said neighbours, too, enjoyed kicking around a few footballs, they decided to send their 23 best players in the hopes that their players might be able to have fun on the pitch and export Grande Cucina as a destination to the world.

That is if they manage to pick up a point at all in the Group Stage. No point being an ad for the world if your national football team just completely flops on the regional stage.

Young, temperamental and maverick manager Antonio Prezzemolo has been given the reins of the team. At just 42, the young manager, who has a penchant for utilising wingbacks as the focal point of attack, is looking to blitz opponents with fast-placed wingplay and verticality on the pitch. Whether the squad's been tested enough against foreign opposition to be able to carry out this plan is another question, though given that the two best players on the pitch just so happen to be the wingbacks, it might. It just might. Don't hold your breath.

The Players

Pappardelle gets the armband by virtue of just being the most experienced player on the pitch; he is certainly a personality. Eccentric and beguiling, but always a pleasure to watch with his curly mane of long hair (seriously, he's 34 and still has managed to keep those locks luscious), Pappardelle will pull shit out of his top locker and get away with it. Nicknamed Il Pazzo for a reason.

The name of the game on the outfield is wing-play. Pass the ball to the wingbacks, they'll make magic happen. Equally adept at both attacking and defending, Farfalline and Ditali are the workhorses of the team, often running the most out of anyone on a given matchday. Cut them off, and the whole team suffers. But they're nimble enough to not get cut off, anyway. The three-man defence sees Struncatura and Stringozzi play slightly ahead of Fiori, who plays largely as a sweeper; adept enough at dealing with low balls, they might have a problem in the air.

In the midfield, Calamarata and Chifferi run the midfield, playing deeper but ocassionally venturing forth to lap up loose balls. The main progression will be through the wingbacks, though both starting midfielders are more than capable of carrying the ball through the middle of the park. To describe Giacomo Linguine as an attacking midfielder might be a misnomer; sure, he starts there, but is often capable of being anywhere on the pitch in the opponents' half, often springing up in the box as a third attacker, or an option to pass to in the middle of the park, or even on the wings, ready to swing in a cross when necessary.

Up top, Tagliatelle is the star man; a veritable poacher, he is blessed with an uncanny ability to dribble past his defender and knock in into the top corner. Gramigne is much the same, but prefers to drop deeper, to deceive opponents and otherwise; she confuses opponents but uses her great pace to her advantage on the break.

Tactical Set-Up

5-3-2, though in reality it's more a 5-2-1-2 than anything. Becomes a 3-2-1-4 in attack, with the wingbacks advancing far up the pitch. It's risky, sure, but Prezzemolo is a 100-or-0 man. Full throttle or no speed. Fourth gear or neutral. You get the idea. It's balls to the wall stuff, an intriguing tactical puzzle for managers to unlock, and should provide a great experience for neutrals.

Home Stadia

While Grande Cucina will most probably never host international matches outside of friendlies (the FCGC, the Federazione Calcio Grande Cucina is utterly and completely skint, and only through government grants was even able to enter the tournament despite the country loving football so much), visiting teams will be hosted in the Stadio della Vale, in the middle of the picturesque port city and capital, Barilla. With a capacity of 41,000, it is not the biggest or most imposing stadium, but supporters will cheer vehemently and loudly for their national team.

Emerging from a bloody civil war that saw Pyazhnaya shake off the shackles of communism, the country is now opening up from its forced isolation, trying to form ties to the international sporting community. For many Pyazhnayans football was the one pastime that united them, despite the corrution scandals that had shaken the league for a long time, with the communist leaders moving players around to their favourite clubs and quenching opposition. Several clubs were dissolved after the war was over and now the Pyzhnayan Football Federation is picking up the pieces and trying to unite everything and everybody. The Xannerian National was the national team's first venture onto the international stage, but the first edition of CAFA coincides with the first official tournament of Pyazhnaya.

Aleksandr Zavrashin - 41
With Rodion Chernomyrdin having to step down from his position after the Xannerian National due to some health-related issues, his assistant coach Zavrashin has stepped up and is ready to show the Anaian stage that the team from the islands is more than just a new kid on the block that will be everybody's whipping person. Compared to the strict and conservative 4-4-2 of Chernomyrdin, Zavrashin puts more emphasis on flexibility and allows the players more freedom to roam depending on the situation in the game.

GK Maksimilian Chupov - 18 - Shakhter Khilvoysk
Despite his young age, Maksimilian Chupov is the probably best netminder in Pyazhnaya with catlike reflexes and good aerial prowess. His main weakness is the command of his defense, which is due to his inexperience, but exacerbated by the fact that three of the four players ahead of him are 21 and younger as well.
LB Vasily Fanin - 18 - Torpedo Krasnograd
Lightning quick on his feet, Fanin is a left back of the modern school, fast to move forward and back, with a knack for nice crosses into the opponents' box. However he still gets caught out of position too often and then has to scramble back.
CB Ulyona Khomkolova - 20 - FK Vselitamak
From champions FK Vselitamak, Khomkolova is as uncompromising in challenges as they come. Her grace has been likened to a disgruntled rhino before morning caffeine, but does she ever get the job done. Don't expect any technical finesse or beautiful ball distribution, if you find yourself within a few feet with her, either be very quick or ready to get closely acquainted with the grass underneath. She is rumoured to have attracted the interest of Quebecois scouts.
CB Valentin Annenkov - 21 - Mazhny Park Severoyarsk
Where Khomkolova is the brick wall, Annenkov is a hidden playmaker in the back. Pundits have said that when footballing magic was handed out, he stepped in front of Ulyona and got her portion as well. Nimble footed and with a great eye to open up the game from the back he can take on the role of a defensive midfielder, going with Zavrashin's directive of flexibility. He is, however, relatively short for a centre back, which can pose issues for a more kick and rush orientated offense.

For most parts of the game he is almost unnoticeable, but that does not mean that he is not playing well. Immensely efficient in defensive play, he often shies away from venturing too far into the opposing half, but he knows how to shut down oncoming traffic by suddenly being in the right spot at the right time.
LM Gennady Burtsov - 29 - Prizrachnaya Brigada Cherniy Zamok
One of the more experienced players in the squad, Burtsov has been a mainstay for Prizrachnaya Brigada for many years now. Equipped with a horse lung he can run up and down for 90 minutes and barely break a sweat, running the opposition ragged. Not a magician on the field, he is one of the players necessary so that others can work their midfield magic.
CM Andrey Guslyakov - 18 - Golubaya Zvezda Ochuromorsk
One of Pyazhnaya's raw diamonds, Guslyakov is the magician that a player like Burtsov allows to shine. Fleet-footed and graceful he has all the tools to become a bonafide playmaker that can dance around an opponent like it's nothing and also has a great shot. He just needs to bulk up a bit and work on his decision making, which at times can be a little, let's call it, surprising. Even for his own team mates.
CM Timur Krasnopyorov - 29 - Dhun Lagarr FC (TKT)
Another veteran and one of two players plying their trade in Tikariot, Krasnyoporov is the safety net for Guslyakov with his ability to shut down oncoming attacks quickly and turn play around. Where Guslyakov's shots are finessed, his are more of the steamhammer kind. He is lacking some precision, but sometimes brute force is just the right tool to get things done.
RM Inna Parshikova - 21 - Shakhter Khilyovsk
Another player to have eyes on her from different scouting departments is Inna Parshikova, who has been a shooting star during the last season. Literally nobody has had her on their notepads before the season started and now she is considered the next breakout star. Blessed with tactical acumen way beyond her years, she is equally dangerous for scoring and passing, making her a total footballing package as she also is quite capable of withstanding tackles. Watch her make a move abroad very soon!
CF Svetlana Ananyeva - 32 - Admiral Tverinsk
Ananyeva's nickname in the team is "Babushka" (Grandma), not just because she is one of the oldest players in the squad, but also because she will watch over the young ones and offer insight, comfort or stern words when needed. While relatively static in her play upfront, she has a talent to be just at the right place at the right time and use her agility to shoot from almost any position.
FW Larisa Nekrestyanova - 28 - Vilharady Owls FC (TKT)
The second player playing in Tikariot, Nekrestyanova has convinced management in Vilharady so much in her brief stint during the second half of the TPL season to secure her a starting position for the upcoming season. Not so much a born goal scorer, she can weave her way in and out of the penalty box and is great to lay off the ball for oncoming midfielders or put sharp crosses for conversion. She is, however, also adept in scoring, making her an all around offensive threat.

Just like when you see your grandma on your dad's side, it's been a while, and haven't you grown! The last time the FMF was kicking about, 'Anaia' was a funny word we bandied about to describe like minded nations and a tower in each of our countries. The more things change, the more they stay the same, eh? Now that it's a bit more serious and one of the four main sporting regions, Mertagne has emerged once more from the ashes for some international competition.

Our History:

Mertagne is a large and proud nation that sits (rather happily) between Starblaydia and Krytenia. Formed from a mass exodus of members of The Inevitable Syndicate over 80 years ago after a bitter conflict, Mertagne enjoyed a brief boom period as much investment into the nation saw it kick off it's rebuild. However, approximately 50 years ago, tensions rose and the nation broke off into nine provinces, each led by private interest groups that had no wish to work together for the betterment of Mertagne, and the national government collapsed and a period known as The Insulation ensued. However, the government reformed 2 years ago (as of the start of the CAFA Cup 1) due to a combination of outside pressure from other nations, and a growing wish from within the nation to integrate with others in the region. This opening of the government dovetailed nicely with the Foxchester Amendment (give or take a year or so), and as part of a great push to increase international relations, the government of Mertagne has invested heavily in kick-starting Mertagne's once great sporting teams.

Manager: Phil Dornell, 66,

Phil Dornell saw out most of the Insulation from comfortable Audioslavia, where he spent a portion of his domestic career as goalkeeper for Tenth Star Hasiera. Before that, he had a solid run at Utica United in Osarius, and therefore over his long career he's seen the continuation of the game in other nations while the Mertagnian game has crumbled. He was the best logical choice for team manager after the FMF was reborn, and has spent the last six months trying to shape the new generation of Mertagnian football into a force to be reckoned with.

Due to Dornell's prestige and tactics, the squad will be playing with a style modifier of -1.

Assistant Manager: Tyrrel Gulliver, 53,

Grandson of Calanian Union forward Phil Gulliver, Tyrrel Gulliver has seen the beautiful game in his home country die before him, despite his best attempts to keep it alive at a local level during The Insulation. Cashing in his heritage during the talks to revitalise the FMF and the national team, he now stands as assistant manager of the first Mertagnian national team to grace a competition in many years. His hopes are high, and he feels that through hard work and effort (the Mertagnian Way), the team can do their part to rebuild the heritage of this brilliant sport in the nation. Granddad would be proud.

A former Montvertanesque striker, Beaubrun is more a motivator than a tactician. Lots of running up and down waving his clipboard about, but nothing actually written on it.

Squad: This is squad of 23 players. It can generally be assumed the players number 1 – 11 will start, but so long as you’re sensible and unless I’ve RPed otherwise, you can RP my team lineup with some variation.

Only men play in Mont Vert but they are familiar with the concept of coed leagues and won’t treat women differently. However, they consider being referred to as “Chickens” rather than “Cockerels” an insult.
All players are domestic unless otherwise stated. (OOC: And those not are signed to puppets.)
The league is fairly new as a result of restructuring following independence, and does not play to a high standard. Some players are semi-pro.
Soccer is a popular sport but mainly as a leisure pasttime rather than an all-consuming passion. Beach soccer is also pretty popular.
Players are athletic and have some talent. If we lose, don’t have us be woefully incompetent or completely unfamiliar with the sport of football, despite obviously being something of a minnow in Anaian terms.
Not a violent team but not a spotlessly clean one either in terms of diving, combative words to the referee, or the odd tactical elbow.

Mascot: Guillaume, an intersex capon (their ambiguous sex saved them from the slaughterhouse). They will run around pecking corn thrown onto the pitch by the fan army, the Cockerel Crew.
Fans: The Cockerel Crew are fairly boisterous but basically well behaved. Hooliganism is unknown. Blowing conch shells is popular (with the fans, less so with the TV audio producers).

The team switches between 5 and 3 at the back. The back three of Élie, Léon and Éric are fairly classic center backs. Léon is more of an enforcer, Éric and Élie with better skills on the ball. They offer a bit with their heads at set-pieces but not much else offensively (Élie fancies himself a “deep lying playmaker” and occasionally lets rip with a 35 yard banger, which goes in about once every ten years and the rest of the time goes 30 yards over the bar). Robert and Mackendy are wing backs; Robert has lost pace with age but is experienced and offers powerful throw-ins as well. Amadou is the most promising reserve but rather raw.

None of the three are magicians on the ball, relying more on short, quick passing (dribbling skills tend not to be prioritized on pitches built on, or literally out of, sand).

Squad for the 1^st CAFA Cup

The Starblaydia national football team represents Starblaydia in international football competitions such as the World Cup and the Confederation of Anaian Football Associations (CAFA) Cup. It is controlled by the Starblaydi Football Association (SFA), the governing body for football in the nation.

Starblaydia have competed on the world stage for almost three centuries and are among the most successful World Cup nations of all time, having won a joint-record five World Cup titles. They have won a total of sixteen tournament championships at senior level, which also includes seven championships at regional level in the AOCAF Cup, an Olympic gold medal and three other minor tournament wins. Twelve of these are classed as 'major' championships (defined as the three WCC-endorsed tournaments and generally recognised regional competitions), which is more than any other nation in history. Starblaydia are ranked third on the all-time list of footballing nations, as measured by the Spaam Ranking System, and were inducted into the World Cup Nation Hall of Fame after World Cup 27. His excellent footballing brain, aggression levels, tactical nous and all-round Audioslavian/Brenecian level of shithousery made him a uniquely successful striker in a nation more used to smooth flying strikers and hulking target men. These are the qualities he brings to the national team on a much grander scale, giving them a level of needle to their play hitherto unknown for the team in white and purple, proving his style's effectiveness with a win over Audioslavia in the AOCAF Cup Final where they 'out-Bulls'd the Bulls'. This team is developing a character that can dig deep and do the dirty work when required.

When you're a goalkeeper and have had to come in the wake of Cosmo Leopoldi, and the middle of the peak of Ruby Narvaez, however, the stats aren't all that bad. Standford's time at Shorterville has shown he certainly has the potential to get between the posts and do a decent job if required.

Not always the finest in the tackle, thanks to his short, thick legs, he is however great at intercepting, harrying and pressing the opposition into making mistakes. Often pops up by the side of the opposing penalty area more than his own, Galdarhim is the definition of a shuttle runner, up and down the right flank all game long with excellent speed and stamina. It's all these qualities that saw him earn a spot at one of the most famous club sides in history, but now he's back home at the Chiefs in a new region.

What makes more sense, however, is to note that Galdarhim will most likely be used as an overlapping Centre Back when Starblaydia are on the attack, and the combination of Sindelaar and Sargent on the right hand side means that a stout Dwarf bombing down the outside needs cover, and Sindelaar is the perfect one to provide it.

Consistent without being brilliant, reliable without being the star, and hardworking to a fault.

There's certainly an argument that Maddison is one of the best players in her position in the world, having previously been mentioned on a Galacticos long list of the best 32 midfielders.

Most of Starblaydi punditry is looking forward to see what he can do at this level.

An exceptionally hard worker, who often appears more in the assist and Key Contribution columns than the goalscoring charts, Al Qubaisi has really begun to make himself available in a position that fits within the style that Fëanáro has developing across the entire national team setup, thanks to developing in the Taeshani league system over the last few years. Omar tends to play as a false nine through the middle than an out-and-out striker, but his size and strength also gives him qualities as a target man to bring wingers into play.

History of The Team
The Kalactanian National Team has been around since the 79th version of the World Cup. The team started out from quiet beginnings finishing in the quarter finals in the 66th Baptism Of Fire against Filindostan. The 80th World Cup Team was highlighted by Jared Sednah and Wendell Jakerein, who ended up making the team of the qualifiers. Sednah was the top player on the team for the Next 2 cycled as he paired up with Luke Dillan to bring the team close to qualifying. Despite the valiant efforts by Dillan and Sednah the team couldn’t end up qualifying in the 82nd and 81st cups. The FA decided not to enter the team in for the 83rd qualifiers due to corruption in the association. The team was quickly eliminated in the 84th qualifiers. The current team is highlighted by younger players that hope to bring the team to the World Cup the the following years. In the 85th World Cup campaign the team put up one of their best qualifying performances. However, near the end of qualifying the team was shaken by the surprise retirement of the star goalkeeper Wendell Jakerein.

Jimmy McCarthy was the future of Kalactanian football the second he stepped onto the Project Olimpo campus. He is a natural leader that can lift the spirits of any of his teammates and he brings great talent to the team. He is a bit weak however he makes up for it with his ability to make a move on anyone. Last cycle he was by far the best player on the team, going out and showing his goalscoring ability, and is able to work some magic out there.

Will Sanders

Murwelldobah FC, Age: 32
Will Sanders is a player that has historically played midfield however he made the switch to midfielder a few years ago. One of the best players on the team he is always focused on making his teammates better through passing. He is a very creative player that likes to express his creativity on the pitch. He was responsible for assists on many of the goal.

Owens has been a mainstay if the starting lineup of the NT since the 80th World Cup. He may be entering his last World Cup as he is very prone to injury’s. He plays a very aggressive game and has a fiery temper, things that can get him in trouble on the field. Owens is currently the team record holder for the most Cautions in one tournament, with 7.

Lamar Hall

Bul Khungur Miners, Age: 22
Lamar is on his very first cycle on the National Team, and he is a started already. He had a breakout season and helped the Ballina Red Devils earn theirselves a spot in IFCF play this season. He is the younger brother of established defender Matt Hall, and wants to become a reliable starter on the national team in the coming years. Look for him to pass a lot, he spends very little time with the ball once he gets possession. Now in the Tikariot Premier League, he looks to become one of the best team players on the team.

Tactics

First-choice lineup. Pace and power will be the watchwords, hoping to make up in physicality what they lack in skill, and given their Nepharan origins they will be brutal and uncompromising both in tackling and in gamesmanship. They're going to come flying at teams, especially down the right, with Nasir Majerle a gifted attacking player and natural forward linking up with the playmaker Talay, but may well get brutally exposed on the counterattack, especially given the sluggish pace of their defence.

Younis Pyrite is a brutish destroyer with no delusions of anything more complex. Offering width, Moths backup winger Nasir Majerle is crowbarred into wingback, and provides much of the side's thrust; Maurtua's significantly more defensively-minded, and more limited as a player, though his aura of competence is very welcome. This team is all about containing their opponent, letting them make mistakes, and capitalising on those. Let the other guys get impatient, lose the ball, and immediately go for the counter attack. Yes, it's frustrating to play against, but you have to admit that there's a certain beauty to doing this near-flawlessly every single time. The Dragonflies aren't a very physical team, but can match almost every opponent in stamina (not so much power or speed, though. Typically only the wingers are pacy). Instead, they rely on tactics and patience. The team is also good enough to be in possession a lot and dictate the tempo, though they're not always creative enough to break down the opposing defence - for that, the Dragonflies have learned to be very, very good on counterattacks, set pieces, and a few patterns in open play. Given the experience most of these players have, it's hard to come up with something new they've never seen - and then do that well enough to reliably score. In order to beat us, you'll need to bring two or more of the following: power, speed, caution.

Basically, this team comes prepared, is patient, and keeps a cool head.

On the left is the standard for this team. Five defenders, a defensive midfielder-slash-pivot, two wingers, an attacking midfielder-annex-second striker, and a pure finisher up front. In possession, one of the defenders can push up: this might be one of the fullbacks to provide width, but can also be one of the centrebacks, in which case the defensive midfielder makes way. The wingers will be wider or narrower based on the opposition, and the same determines how far the fullbacks will advance. In defence, the team becomes narrower, with the defensive midfielder playing spoiler to whoever is trying to find space between the Ko-orenite lines, and the wingers falling back to meet opposing fullbacks. The striker and attacking midfielder will almost always look for space to launch a counterattack. On the right is the alternate lineup, which still adheres to a basic 5-4-1. You could call it a 5-5-0, seeing as the striker is sitting back much further. This lineup works the exact same for the defenders, with or without possession. The defensive and central midfielder are pivots, the wingers have far more freedom to find space, and the striker drops back to receive the ball and allow other players to overlap, enabling them to score a goal rather than the striker themselves. In defence, the midfielders can organically shrink and expand their 'pentagram-five' formation much more fluidly.

Culture
The Audioslavian way of playing football includes using a fair amount of gamesmanship and cheap tactics to try to tip the balance in their favour. Audioslavia play a brand of counter-attacking football named Kontrapuntzeka in which they attempt to soak up pressure in order to hit their opponents on the break. As a result they often have problems with breaking down teams that defend solidly. Audioslavian players tend to be on the smaller side, averaging around 5’9 with a few exceptions here and there (Moxey, Rijsbergen and Stroud are above 6’0, but most of the others aren’t, including the back five) but are usually physically fitter than their opponents, as such able to keep playing at the same level deep into games and capitalising as their opponents tire. The trade-off to this is a lack of technique compared to their international rivals. Oh, and there are always quesitons about the team’s mentality. If things start going wrong, mistakes, insecurity and infighting start to creep into the Audioslavians’ game.

Audioslavian football is at a high point, with the side seventh in the KPB rankings and the domestic league the best in the world. Their third place at the World Cup and their AOCAF Cup last cycle is their best performance since the great 63-64 side won everything twice. As a result, the side are overconfident heading into these championships and require being knocked down a peg or two.

One of the main reasons that Hibs made it to the top flight is this young man's predatory instinct. A clinical finisher, give him a sight of goal and he'll more than likely score. AVORAGO NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

CAFA I

OVERVIEW:

Avorago is a “nation” inhabited by roughly 1100 people, all of whom live nomadically and adapt to their environment as it comes. The people are still stuck in the old, old ways, creating homes out of sticks and branches while living purely and entirely off the land. However, it would not suffice to call them nomadic, as they remain in the same place for the entire year. No one knows where they came from, but there are certain similarities the Avoragans have to other nations in Anaia and across the multiverse that makes you think that they must have arrived from somewhere.
Yet, despite barely being classified as a nation, a message in a bottle arrived at the shore of the only beach on the island, inviting the Avoragans to the inaugural CAFA Cup - the regional football tournament for Anaian nations.

Now, Avoragans had been playing their own version of football for decades before the CAFA was even thought of. Whenever branches fell off the broadleaf trees that covered the entirety of the island, the locals would set them up at roughly two metres off the ground between two specific trees in the island’s only clearing. It is known as pigball, as it uses a wild pig’s hide for the ball. Due to a slice of miracle, it is fundamentally the same as football, although throw-ins exist as kick-ins, while goalkeepers may not leave their box, which is a fair bit smaller than in typical football.

There may only be roughly 4000 people in Avorago, but it is certainly still enough to have their own football league as well as an organising body, known as the Federation of Avorago Football (FAP). Eight eight-a-side teams, or “sub-tribes”, play four games against each other once every week. The eight teams are named after Avorago’s eight most prominent animals; the eagle, bear, black snake, salmon, red crab, pig, caribou and squirrel. Each family belongs to one of these “sub-tribes”, but both genders are viewed equally and those that do not have the skill to participate in the games are diehard fans watching from either on the ground or from the houses and viewpoints within the trees. Games usually only last for sixty minutes - all of which is played straight. As a result, the players are not quite as tired at the end of the games, something that they will need to adapt to in the inaugural CAFA.

Each “club” side has 17 players; three goalkeepers and a reserve for each position on the field. They also have a coach, who runs the side through their routines and trains the side, but is also one who controls the management of the squad. In order to select the most appropriate side from the players, the eight coaches have selected the team of 23 to travel to the host nation, which has apparently yet to be decided. It was a tough job, but in the end, the side that played was certainly a formidable one. In pigball, at least. In football?

So, with the unanimous consent of the FAP, they set out for mainland Anaia on their self-forged rowboats to the nearest Anaian settlement. It took many nights and days, but the sturdy rowboats held. The 24 people on them - the 23 players and the coach - below the technical aspects of the side.

TACTICS:

If you insist on giving the Primates a formation, they are most likely to play a 3-4-3. However, when attacking, almost all players are up, attempting to pressurise the opposition defence. Meanwhile, when defending, the specialist forwards are often not bothered to try and come back, leaving the designated defenders to defend for themselves. They don’t really play positions and are more likely to just man-mark, but are always looking to get on the attack. It is why, in sixty minutes of football, the results they record are often far more bewildering than the nations that play 90 minutes, despite having an extra half hour.

Another focus of hers is supreme accuracy in passing and shooting, as well as going on the attack as much as possible. It’s worked for the Eagles, will it work for the Primates?

None of these selections in the side were really surprises, after all. Muljohn, Eermias and Mehari are, by a fair way, the three best goalkeepers on the island of Avorago. They are all extremely athletic players, but Muljohn simply has the height and reach, standing at 197cm. It alone could well be considered the reason why he has been selected as the starting keeper, although Ermias and Mehari are certainly on his tail. It will be interesting to see how he fares on the international stage, where shots will undoubtedly come much faster than those in Avorago, and on a much, much safer patch of grass to dive on. However, that being said, if he performs badly, Ermias and Mehari could certainly get at least one game. But we really cannot know, can we?

Defence is certainly not any Avoragan club sides’ strong suit, and it is portrayed exactly in that manner here. No defender in Avorago is as suited for their task as the midfielders or strikers are, although there are certainly a fair few capable ones. Petros Daniel, the captain, is by far the best defender on the island; only the very best forwards or wingers can break past him. Him and Coobine Muljohn form quite a formidable defensive line for the Eagles - one of the reasons why they are one of the Avorago Premier League’s strongest clubs. Selam Medhane and Bisirat Idris, the other two starting defenders, don’t quite have the same capability to read play that Daniel does, although they both have sublime pace and can outrun most forwards. However, the most surprising addition to this side is young Kisanet Amanuel, at just 15 years of age. She has shown a lot of promise for the Pigs and this will certainly be a monumental learning curve for her as she will almost certainly get a fair bit of playing time. Rounding out the side are Ogbonnaya Kennena and Igwebuike Chinomso, two defenders who really had to push to have their names listed here. They are probably the weak links of the defensive line, although they can move most any forward on their day.

Avorago’s midfielders are certainly their strength; the four of them patrol the region with pride and determination. When you’re going 3-4-3, your midfield must be strong, but fortunately for Avorago, that is exactly what they’ve got. Chinwuebo Chinama is arguably Avorago’s best-ever player and was nearly given the captaincy, although in the end Chieloka favoured the experience of Petros Daniel over the 22-year-old. Okwaduigbo Chiemela and Nduru Chukwunenye play in the centre midfield and have proven quite good at controlling it in the sides’ practice matches together, while Chinelo Chimaijem basically plays as the Primates’ fourth forward. At only 19 years of age, he is one of the most prominent players on the island when it comes to ball skills, which have come at the expense of passing accuracy. Yet, he is still worthy of the starting position over Nwabugwu Achebe despite being the worst passer of the two. Chinomso Nkemdirim, the reserve defensive midfielder, can feel hard done by for not getting into the starting XI; if not for Chinama, she’d be a shoo-in. Chiwetalu Okwuoma, Chialuka Ginikanwa and Achebe are all expert passers of the ball, but lack the ball skill the starters have. Yet, they are still certainly very useful backups and will not be much easier to break past.

The Primates’ forwards are a relatively strong group, although not as strong as the midfielders and not as weak as the Avoragan defence. The two starting wingers - Elechi Ibeamaka and Chifo Chiazagomekpele - could not be more different. Ibeamaka, at only 18 years of age, is tall and incredibly fast and is one of the most accurate passers in the team, if not the most accurate. Chiazagomekpele, on the other hand, is a super controller of the ball and is one of the best in the side when it comes to skills, but lacks the ability to put the ball in the back of the net or make regular long-range passes. Eberegbulam Onwuamaeze in centre-forward, though, is a mix of the two of them. He isn’t quite as good at the specialist skills the wingers are, but is a great finisher and is also quite useful when it comes to setting up goals, too. Undoubtedly the best forward in Avorago and the Black Snakes are honoured to have him. Kenenna Odinakachukwu, Nnenna Ogbonnaya and Chinemeremma Ijendu are the three reserve attackers and are all expected to get some game time at some point, with Ogbonnaya probably the most likely to start out of the three of them, replacing Chiazagomekpele on the right-wing, but it’s really hard to tell.

Avorago certainly have a very strong side when it comes to pigball, but whether they’ll be able to translate it into football against some of the multiverse’s largest giants remains to be seen. The likely answer is no, but it ain’t impossible. Well, as far as we know, at least. It could be. I mean, any footballing (or pigballing) body with the trigram FAP has got to be pretty shit, right?

Introduction

Flavovespia, a nation formerly of Atlantian Oceania, that signed the Declaration of Foxchester to join the region of Anaia. The days of the AOCAF are now over for Flavovespia, and the CAFA Cup is their new calling. Flavovespians aren’t entirely new to international football now, but they’ve never quite had a landmark success yet, with no World Cup Qualification, and a quarter final appearance in the Cup of Harmony 78 their best so far. However the CAFA Cup is a new beginning for all nations involved, and Flavovespia will go into it hoping to make a good first impression.

Flavovespia has a population a bit over 20’000’000, and is an island nation. Football is the biggest sport by far, with the Super League growing in terms of IFCF ranking, and international prominence with more international transfer activity. Nevertheless, much like the national team, there’s plenty of growth needed to move to a higher level of prestige.

Home-Away-Third

Flavovespia have unveiled 3 new kits for the CAFA Cup 1,that are quite a different look to their previous kits. The home kit may have a yellow shirt, black shorts and black socks, and the away a reversal, but the similarities end there. The traditional “double V” on the shirt, sleeves and shorts, is created of elements of fading black shapes, in a bold artistic effect, a break from tradition. The away kit features the same design, but a palette reversal. The third kit is designed as a celebration of Anaia. The purple shirt, white shorts and green socks come from the colours of the flag of Anaia. The patterned top of the shirt, is based on the varying flag of Anaian nations. The kit has grabbed a lot of attention in Flavovespia, with a variety of reviews and opinions about the idea and execution.

Marcus McCormick Age: 56

Marcus McCormick’s performances so far as Flavovespia manager seem to be middling. After a shaky AOCAF 63, he got Flavovespia to 3rd in the World Cup Qualifiers. The Cup of Harmony 80 saw Flavovespia knocked out in the Round of 32, but to eventual champions Græntfjall. Certainly getting out of the group stages, and winning the group earned McCormick some plaudits. Critics however are pointing out that he’s continuing on a trend of largely beating most lower ranked nations, but rarely getting anything from games against higher ranked nations.

Whilst at club level he’s managed with a 5-2-1-2, at international level the 4-2-3-1 is the most common formation used now. Another change is his attitude, once seen as serious and strict, he’s become a more lively and enthusiastic figure in the national side, and seems to have grown into the role. Nevertheless, he knows he needs to get the best out of the squad and get the results to keep his job, the FFA can be rather “trigger happy” when it comes to firing managers.

Of all the positions to choose, goalkeeper seems the easiest for McCormick. Aarif Muhammad has rarely put a foot wrong all through the World Cup Qualifiers and the Cup of Harmony 80. At 25, and already playing in the Brenecian A-League, above the standard of the Flavovespia Gold League, it seems unlikely he’ll be out of the #1 jersey for a while. The ever eccentric Lucky Diamond remains as second choice, and Robert Jones a dependable third choice, minutes for either of them seem a bit unlikely.

Marcus McCormick has given his defensive options a bit of a shake-up for CAFA Cup 1, although several players from the previous tournaments still remain. The centre back selection from the Cup of Harmony 80 remain unchanged. Tony Gardner is an experienced head, playing in one of the top leagues, the Nepharan Zenith now. He’s certainly one of the first names on the teamsheet. Alexander May and Daniel Lansdell seem to trade starting and bench spots in the side. May brings experience, and a bit more strength to his game, although is fairly short-tempered. Lansdell is good at dealing with aerial threats and seems to be growing in international confidence, but does struggle against pace. Stuart Cookson is a rising talent, and many will hope soon he can take a more decisive step up to make an impact at this level.

Out wide, McCormick seems keen for a full back/wing back split. On the left, David Lyons for both Langmere Green Rovers and Flavovespia is proving to be a key player. His defensive skills are some of the best in Flavovespia now, and he has a real eye for the pass when getting the ball out. Kishan Rees gets a first call up. A former player at club level for Marcus McCormick, Rees is a pacey wing back who can provide some dangerous crosses and passes. His defensive work is also decent, if not yet tested at this level. Also able to play as a left midfielder, he adds some utility to the side. Whilst David Blythe is a wing back officially, at international level he’s a capable full back. Whilst he’d prefer more options to go forward, he can still be a hassle for the opposition to better on his side of the pitch. Andrew Dance is another debutant. The 21 year old came to Loxthorpe Rovers with a lot of promise, and despite the odd tough moment, has shown flashes of great skill and defensive awareness. Nevertheless, it’s a call-up some consider a bit controversial.

Marcus McCormick is looking for more options in midfield, and has taken that fairly literally in some respects, with 9 instead of the traditional 8 called up. The key name will still be the #11 and captain, Steven Hall. He may be 32, but his skill in dribbling, passing and shooting still seems unrivalled by practically any other Flavovespian. The rest of the attacking midfield poses interesting questions. Hall’s club teamamtes, Robert Totten and William Somers are both now in the squad. Robert Totten has shown himself to be a surprise success at club level, and started plenty of international games recently. But questions remain as to if he’s creative or clinical enough for his role. At 33, Somers call-up has raised eyebrows. However he still seems a great crosser of the ball, and a creative threat out wide. Other options to play out wide include Jonathan Feld, who’s been in most Flavovespian squads. A versatile midfielder who rarely has a noticeably bad game, but one who in recent years hasn’t ever really been one of the best in the squad. Christopher Ace has spent a lot of his international career coming off the bench late on, but with supreme pace, and Hall in the side, there’s some inevitability to that.

In the central defensive midfield there’s a handful of options. David Clark is the one most likely to start. He can play both a ball-winning an a ball-playing role, although he’s probably not a star at either of those. He does have an eye for long-range shots and rebound goals, 13 goals in 60 caps decent for a player of his position. Kieron Player holds on to the #7 jersey. Playing his football for Sleepy Hollow in Taeshan, the hopes are he has the potential to go far. However internationally so far, he’s not quite got up to speed with the international game, although the hope is the breakthrough is soon. Alexander Clarkson is a very determined defensive midfielder, who’ll give everything in every game. The question is if the ceiling of his abilities is high enough for this level. Murad Ahmed has played a variety of midfield positons over the years, he’s another player with many good skills, but few great skills.

Attacking roles seemed like a foregone conclusion for a while, but recently the dynamic is changing. With a one striker formation, there now is a debate between Coleman and Cole for that role. Coleman is hugely experienced at international level, and is a first team player for Aries Chariots, who are often towards the right end of the Nepharan Zenith. With 96 goals at international level, he really has an eye for getting in the right spot and finishing, and hitting a century of goals is the goal. However in some international tournaments, he’s gone off form, and that’s caused some frustration. Michael Cole is now the alternative. The Flavovespian domestic transfer record was broken for him by Langmere Green Rovers, and he’s quickly showing why. In front of goal, he’s as clinical as ever, and fast developing the skills to get in exactly the right spot. Even outside obvious goal scoring chances, he’s a threat, with a spectacular volleyed goal in the Cup of Harmony 80. He may end up playing in the attacking midfield 3, a gamble McCormick may have to take to get the two key strikers in the squad. A few eyebrows are raised by the 3rd striker chosen, Victor Cooke. He was in the last squad, but uncapped in the end. An old-school striker who’s not one for creative football, but will use strength and speed to hustle defenders for the right spot to get a goal. He can be brash and disruptive to defenders, which doesn’t play well with everyone. Certainly an interesting call-up, but there is a question being asked, is he really Flavovespia’s 3rd best striker?

Despite early rumours that Saltstead’s Federal Government would reject the Foxchester Declaration outright, the Federal Diet defied attempted political, economic and military coercion by proposing a constitutional amendment that would effectively mark Saltsteadish approval of the Declaration. In the ensuing referendum, the Saltsteadish electorate stunned pollsters with a “shy Anaian effect” by proudly and overwhelmingly becoming one of the first (if not the first) nations to explicitly endorse Foxchester via popular vote. As the popular refrain went: “if being among our friends and neighbours is treason, we are happy to be traitors.”

But the political turmoil over Foxchester cast a large shadow over Saltstead’s World Cup qualifying campaign. The Stallions’ erstwhile-head coach departed Ashwell after guiding the national team to their worst ever qualifying performance, finishing in the bottom half of the table for only the second time and a humiliating thirteen points adrift of second place. Yet with the turmoil put behind the Confederation and the woman who (as interim head coach) last got Saltstead past the quarterfinals at a major tournament taking the reigns of the Stallions as a temporary head coach, the Stallions managed to win a tricky Cup of Harmony group, ease through the last 32 and take the eventual runners-up to extra time. With the first CAFA about to begin, time will tell if the changeover in leadership and confederation will do the Stallions any good.

Coming into the role with the aim of resuscitating a stagnant Saltsteadish national team, Van Åupħen’s appointment is a long-overdue recongition of her formative role in the Stallions’ history and the Halsinger has used her newfound creative freedom to adopt a greater focus on the neglected counterattack that won the Confederation plaudits in years gone by. Van Åupħen has retained one of her predecessor’s co-assistants, with fitness coach and former Stallions midfielder Clement Kolen promoted to be Aleksänder van den Bergen’s partner on staff.

The default Saltsteadish strategy can be summed up in one phrase: “the best offence is a good defence”. The Stallions play a highly opportunistic attack, lying in wait for an opportunity rather than charging head-on, with possession mostly confined to the midfield. Saltstead prefer to play a passing game in possession, while attempting to pry the ball away from the opposition when not, either by intercepting a pass or tackling players. The Stallions will attempt to frustrate and infuriate the opposition and are unashamed of playing for draws and advancing via penalty shoot-outs.

Juxon Fillar is the unquestioned #1 on the team after the last AOCAF and the following World Cup; the fact that he is only twenty-five and still eligible for this tournament is just a boon to the Chromatik team in general. Very good at set pieces and one-on-one scenarios, he's become better in transition and also become a leader in the locker room, earning the Captain's armband for this tournament. As the oldest of three Fillars on the roster, he 'll be on the lookout to make his last U-25 tournament a memorable one as the Chromatiks look to go one step further than they did last time in the regional levels.

Cathryn Nio's legend is just beginning. The former Southern Chromatik University keeper, now with Unama'kik-Inverness 1877 of Quebec, is a fundamentally sound keeper who struggles with maintaining confidence in her play. Back together with Juxon after sitting out the last AOCAF due to Kathie Begley's emergence, Nio will gain a lot by being in the same locker room as Fillar as she continues to fix what nobody else can fix for her - her mentality in approaching the game. Should the unthinkable happen and Juxon be injured, Cathryn can be counted upon to not make a disastrous mistake but can struggle at times in big-game situations.

Van Enax is an interesting study: Having absconded the CCFA altogether, he's headed to Eura to play his craft; he's a prodigy of sorts when it comes to instinctive goalkeeping and having a finger on the flow of things. He still favors to his right side and is weak heading to his left, but he's been working on that. With another year's eligibility on the U-21 team as well, Enax continues to develop to someone that the Anomalies may rely on in the future.

Grayson Fillar is the long-term answer at Right Back for Chromatika: Second oldest by age but third in order of appearance to the national spotlight amongst the Fillar household, Grayson Fillar is a bullheaded, stubborn, physical right back will will outright impose his will on his opponents. Overshadowed by his younger sister, the electric Baillaire, Grayson was the one who actually chose to finish high school in Chromatika before making the move to Cazadores Cathair. Though he says that he's proud of his sister (and he probably is), there is a deeply competitive streak in him that demands that he also make a name for himself atop Chromatika's slew of Fillars. On the pitch, he knows how to use his size to its utmost advantage, almost appearing larger than he is at times. He also understands the importance of momentum and tone, leading to his not being shy to commit a foul if one is needed. He won't have to lead here but will be a key stalwart.

Keira Anbient, no relation to Keira Andisori, is described as a pure willpower player first and foremost. She is neither the biggest player on the pitch, the fastest, nor the quickest to the ball; instead, she is just always around where the action is. Having joined Kitara Athletic Association and garnering valuable experience there, Anbient has only become better and better as she gets more used to different situations. Experience will be her best teacher, and as she continues to gain the opportunities in front of her, she'll only get better.

Cylie Nodis had a very disappointing season the last time around in the CCFA, but still deserves this call-up. A U-18 alumni, she is perhaps the most offensive center back in Chromatik history. With a nose for the ball on every set piece, some deep crosses and the ability to thread the needle using either foot, it's been stated that she should change to a Defensive Midfielder at times. She's set in her ways, though, and insists she should play at fullback. (Un)fortunately, she's proficient enough that nobody can really force her to do anything else otherwise.

Ha'nei Ighv is really a midfielder moonlighting at left back with her shooting skills, but insists at playing so far back just to make things challenging. A bit of an insufferable know-it all with a good heart, she likes to pair with Cylie Nodis and create a high-pressing defensive line with the help of the central midfield. She's quite good at scoring a handful of goals every year, and can surprise everyone by the creativity in her play.

Annemarie Killirion is a two-time DBC player whose calling card is being very well rounded. She can be a bit caught up in her head at times but is always ready to step in. With the rock that Grayson Fillar is, she won't be counted on to show up often. Off the pitch, she's spoken against the concept of a Chromatik royal family in the Fillars, saying that it puts a focus on the siblings that makes it much harder for other players to get noticed. Her relationship with Grayson is professional at best; this off-field drama may be the bigger reason to keep an eye on how she is doing.

Klavida Régine is one of the few players that will make their debut at the international stage on any level. A bit of a shorter fullback who prefers to play with pace, Régine's calling card is clearing with her head. Unfortunately, she's not as good at heading them in on set pieces, which is a facet of her game that she is working on. Mostly here to gain experience and to garner some name recognition.

Carthy Yila is a burly center back who prefers to outmuscle the opposition. He is the type to make a clean (or sometimes not so much) tackle and let that act do the talking. Thankfully, he's good at avoiding cards, but can contribute to the opposition getting a few free kicks every match. Mostly on the roster to add some size if needed, he is the yang to Nodis's speedy Yin.

Ipati Aimée's stock continues to go up after her previous appearance at the U-21 ranks. Ipati is more of a traditional type who's quite good at clearing away headers, playing man-to-man, you name it. The issue with her is that she's almost too bland. She went unnoticed for so long before a local writer wrote a piece on her playing style about how she didn't lack much but also wasn't quite good at anything. Now that she's in the system, she'll be hoping that her upward trajectory continues.

Barrion Winge fits the mold of the new Chromatik squad quite well - as he is a crosser first and a shooter second, preferring to be the one that leads up to the goal than taking the shots himself. When he needs to score, he prefers his right foot, and tends to go for balls that curve into the side netting. He is far better in his element when he's eating up space, creating pace, and contributing to the creativity of an attack. As Chromatika plays toward having a more of a shooter on the left wing, having someone like Winge is invaluable.

Kaia Larriet-Cortes is third in a line of very capable defensive midfielders behind Enigma Armageddon and Kateryna Zuniga. She grabs the attention due to her last name. Niece to the late Franscesca Larriet-Cortes, Chromatika's first Manager and martyr in the Rainbow Revolution, Kaia is an even-keeled Defensive Midfielder who is best described as a younger, female Enigma Armageddon. Both of them are imposing, both of them lead on the pitch, and both of them know how to contribute offensively when needed. Where Enigma commands attention by physical presence, hers is more subtle, being in all the right places at right times. She is often the visionary on the pitch.

Mare Si is easily the best complete center midfielder in CCFA history. She started off as a holding midfielder and then developed her shooting game to incorporate set pieces as well. The complete package, she'll play the defensive midfielder who has the capability to shoot if the opposition is caught napping. On the squad, she is known as the team's patient assassin, as her playmaking ability increases the longer the game goes.

Baillaire Fillar is the flashiest of the Fillars. She subscribes to the Hermaeus Mora/Haley Hauser school of Attacking Midfielders, marrying both styles by shooting first and asking questions later while making deep runs into opposing territory. With a creative and dramatic flair that doesn't really exist in other Chromatiks from the past, Baillaire is a playmaker through and through. She's the reason why Chromatika is trying a new formation to field the combination of Kuznetsov, Hauser, and Baillaire Fillar in the next World Cup Qualifiers.

Vasiliy Marten Kuznetsov, or VMK, is a star in the making who can do it all - drop back and defend, counter, cross, and shoot from range. The sky is the limit for him, and the fact that he is only twenty-five spells great things for Chromatika's future. As the Vice-Captain of the squad, he's been unleashed by the new formation regardless of what combination of center midfielders that Chromatika will be fielding. Always dangerous with his left foot and deceptive quickness, he'll need to compensate for the lack of one Haley Hauser on the pitch; thankfully, he might have the right people to do just that.

Mikael Lin started his athletic career as a sprinter on the tracks, specializing in the 100, 200, and 100 hurdles. In a dead sprint, nobody can beat him - not even the likes of Baillaire Fillar and VMK. Having suffered a disastrous season with Eyrods City FC, he will try to wash away the foul taste in his mouth by providing a positive contribution to the CAFA for Chromatika. When Chromatika needs a change in pace and energy, Lin will come in and provide a boost that cannot be ignored.

Amélie Ju is a stereotypical holding midfielder who's here to help substitute in when Kaia or Mare needs a breather. She's rather adapt at catching would-be-speedsters and corralling them away from goal. In very rare situations, she can come in to form a triangle of Defensive Midfielders with Kaia playing the more offensive spot; that would be the most defensive formation that the Chromatiks have to offer.

Tyoma Laurette is a well-rounded Attacking Midfielder whose favorite thing to do is spin around people and leave them in the dust. The issue is that if they aren't fooled, he's probably done. Learning about patience has been the hardest thing for him. Best used in short spurts when the team needs that one chance to make all the difference.

Alissar Phoen's stock rose like a rocket with Chromia Central College University's latest run to their championship. An ambidextrous shooter who actually prefers range to up close, his creativity and dramatic scoring ability was what led the Comets to their fourth title in five seasons. Many are wondering if this can be replicated in the international scene; his first chance to prove himself begins here.

Miranda Andersen is an ambidextrous winger who has all the skills to be a great player but struggles with motivation and the killer instinct to properly take advantage. Her years in Tikariot have helped her a bit, but she's rather happy with deploying deep crosses and being an assist-focused player first.

Paskal Toussaint is a short-ranged one-on-one specialist who's mostly on this roster to be a supporting striker with the new philosophy. He'll spend most of the game trying to slip by unnoticed and be an outlet for the Attacking Midfielders or Wingers should they need it. This style of play fits him best, as he is on the smallish side and doesn't do the best when it comes to directly confronting the defense.

Kara Oveni may be just nineteen, but she is a beast in stature and in playstyle. Possessing more of a big-play flair and the tendency to create chances on her own, she'll likely come in when the team uses two Defensive Midfielders and the team needs a striker who can handle themselves. Still developing that instinct at Colonial Sile, Oveni's career is just beginning.

STRATEGY

Gone are the days of having two strikers on top that would score most of the goals on the squad. With the retirement of Keira Andisori, Kaytlyn Victoriane, and Beaunia Andisori, and the fact that Olimpia Vidal and Rowena Sierra's days as a starter on the national team are also coming to an end, Richard Valens and Tim Landers have committed to what has become the next thing for Chromatika's national team: midfielders.

With the new formation - a 4-3-2-1 that can easily adapt to a 4-4-1-1 - the Anomalies' best playmakers on the pitch, the Attacking Midfielders and the Left Winger, will be allowed to contribute as much to the attack as the strikers.

It all starts with the back four, with the left side on this tournament's roster being players who can play a bit further up the pitch. This does mean uneven lines around the back. In front of them, the Right Wing will play more of a supportive style while the Left Wing will play a bit further up the pitch; if the team is fielding a single Defensive Midfielder and two Attacking Midfielders, the Left Winger will play a little further back and allow the Attacking Midfielders and the lone Striker to look for scoring opportunities while being in the periphery.

If the team needs a defensive boost, one of the Attacking Midfielders can be removed for a second Defensive Midfielder (likely Mare Si in this case). In this scenario, the Left Winger will play a bit further up to assist the single Attacking Midfielder while the two Defensive Midfielders help out the defense.

In the rarest of cases, Kaia Larriet-Cortes can play the Attacking Midfielder position to field three Defensive Midfielders at once.

It is Chromatika's hope that his new formation will allow the greatest amount of playmakers on their side to have a chance at impacting the game on both ends of the pitch. There will be more chances to concede in transition, but provided that the team can learn to figure out the spacing, this new formation may be what they needed.
