Windows 10 to be Retired

Postby Forsher » Tue Jun 15, 2021 7:58 am

Microsoft says it will stop supporting Windows 10 in 2025, as it prepares to unveil a major revamp of its Windows operating system later this month.

When Windows 10 was launched, Microsoft said it was intended to be the final version of the operating system.

But from 14 October 2025, there will be no new updates or security fixes for either the Home or Pro versions.

And Microsoft says its successor will represent one of the "most significant updates" to the OS in the past decade.

Honestly, I'm glad Windows 10 is coming to an end. Oh, not because I have some major problem with it but because it's boring not having a new version of the OS. I have really fond memories of going into places like the Warehouse Stationery (don't worry about it) and seeing all the shiny new Vista computers with the cool things computers designed for Vista could do. And even when things are... unpopular, new versions create talking points. Windows 10 as originally conceived was just such a boring idea.

So, anyway, thoughts, NSG? Should companies continue to manipulate customers into spending big through artificially created product retirement and replacement cycles? Or should they focus on providing continuous and ongoing support through iterative, no cost, change?

Bonus: what I'm pretty sure is the original NSG Windows 10 thread

Did anyone seriously think that Windows 10 was going to be the last version of windows?

A part of me secretly hope that the whole "Windows Subsystem for Linux" thingie is an hint that the next version of Windows will actually be just a compatibility layer/UI/services on top of a GNU/Linux system. A part of me secretly dread that.

It's okay, your computer was built to be replaced in three anyway.

I hope they get to improve their UX/accessibility. If they're saying "significant" then it'll have to include UX upgrades, right?

My main computer is like a Ship of Theseus, it has been replaced by parts since 1997, never fully at once, and many of is components are much older than 3 years. And the OS (Debian GNU/Linux) I reinstalled only once since 2000, to switch from 32-bits to 64-bits (I didn't dare do that without a reinstall).

Same. I just bought a Windows 10 Panasonic a few months ago. I'm digging in my heels and just never updating; most of what I use it for is work-related stuff anyway.

So in keeping in line the saga that is the Windows OS releases, the OS after 10 is going to suck balls and be pure garbage like ME, Vista, Win 8/8.1.

I'm not interested in a new user interface, much less a mobile one like Windows 8 and 8.1 were. I don't think I'd have been interested in Windows 10 X either, nor do I want anything like Windows 10's S Mode that purposely makes the OS more limited in capabilities. This is a bad move if the plan is to bifucate Windows. Every time Microsoft has done this historically speaking, it's turned out for the worse. Windows 10 being Software as a Service was going just fine, unless of course; it wasn't profitable. My guess is that Microsoft wants new money from a successor product?

Am I going to need to get a new laptop or what? I finally switched from Windows 7 in 2019. 6 years of using an OS is too short of a time frame from what I had in mind, but isn't so bad considering that I was able to use Windows 7 for around 8 years.

Does that mean I'm just a few years away from being able to use my laptop without having unwanted updates shoved down my throat? Cool beans.

I've gone from Windows 3.1>95>XP>7>10 I built a new computer a couple years ago and installed Win10 Pro. It's a pretty decent OS after one rips out all of the telemetry/call home bullshit, the bloatware shit like that nosy cunt cortana, etc. Got it running pretty lean and mean.

Pretty much the way I approach it. It's inevitable that work will get the newest OS at some point and from there I'll form my opinion on the new release.

The only thing stopping me from switching to Linux is laziness. I hate Microsoft so, so much. The laptop my wife bought a few months ago wasn't even usable without submitting to a forced Microsoft account. And on top of that and the forced updates, they still are trying to shove Edge down our throats too! You put lipstick on the pig that is Internet Explorer, everyone sees that. No one wants Internet Explorer!

Hehe, one of my many reasons for using it is laziness. No need to bother with antivirus. No need to ever reinstall. No need to install crappy drivers when switching hardware. Just two commands (or a few clicks) to update all the software at once, system and applications.

Not me. There probably will never be a last version of Windows, given how Microsoft jumps at every opportunity for cash.

Microsoft should Extend the life of Windows 10 until 2030, and this Decision that Microsoft has been Made is a Anti-Consumer, because More People have no Option to Upgrade into the New Windows OS, Consumers just gonna Boycott them and Switch to Linux and Mac because Linux and Apple doesn't Retiring their OS, but they sometimes retire their Main OS.

Honestly, I prefer Windows to Mac And Linux, because Mac and Linux are kinda clunky, at least for me.

Then why not make Windows Users a Petition to Extend Windows 10's Life until 2030 and Further? Because Microsoft doesn't want to Waste their Money and time in the Windows 10?

I don't see any compelling need for Windows 10 to be replaced, unless of course- Microsoft needs money from a newer successor product. Only thing Windows 10 couldn't do for me, was run legacy software/games that were meant for Windows 95 or earlier. (It technically could run, but there was an ugly blue title bar I couldn't get rid of)

But in those cases, a working emulator is usually eventually created. Microsoft's peak or pinnacle of software greatness was possibly Windows XP with 7 being a worthy successor, with 10 being slightly worse but not bad in due time.

If I absolutely can't spend anything on newer hardware, it looks like the only choice would be to switch to the best Linux distribution I can find. But this also means not being able to use anything designed for Windows if there isn't a Linux version or if it doesn't work with Wine. Only Apple or going with a Chromebook is worse.

There might be an option to use older hardware with the newer OS that comes out, but I don't exactly trust it to run well in that case. Usually the best experience is with the hardware and the software being in sync in terms of capabilities or when it came out. If the required specs are higher, then the older hardware might not cut it.
