Five Oregon Counties vote to Join Idaho

Postby San Lumen » Wed May 19, 2021 8:34 pm

https://www.opb.org/article/2021/05/19/ ... -of-idaho/

Voters in five rural Oregon counties approved measures on Tuesday to consider joining the state of Idaho, a part of a long-shot grassroots movement to break with a state dominated by liberal voters west of the Cascade Mountains.

Voters in Malheur, Sherman, Grant, Baker and Lake counties all approved measures that would require county officials to take steps to promote moving the Idaho border west to incorporate their populations.

They join two other rural counties — Jefferson and Union — whose voters approved measures promoting a move to Idaho last year.

The local measures are backed by Move Oregon’s Border for a Greater Idaho, a local organization that wants to grow Idaho west and south into some counties in Northern California.

“This election proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon. If Oregon really believes in liberal values such as self-determination, the Legislature won’t hold our counties captive against our will,” said Mike McCarter, a conservative activist who heads the group. “If we’re allowed to vote for which government officials we want, we should be allowed to vote for which government we want as well.”

I hate to break it to Mr. McCarter but this is not how democracy works. Legislative apportionment is by population not land area and statewide elections are decided by who wins the most votes not who wins the most counties.

By the logic given we should break up the United States into several dozen more states because rural counties vote differently than urban ones. That is ridiculous and its unlikely this measure goes anywhere beyond being a protest vote.

My feeling is if you dont like the politics of a state or province move to another that fits in better. These people should move to Idaho instead of trying to change boundaries.

Similar proposals have happened over the decades and none have gone anywhere and I have serious doubt this will lead to any border changes either.

Your thoughts NSG?

As an Oregonian, I love this so much. Portlanders run the state, so the farmers would rather join Idaho. The consent of the governed is one of the basic principles of government, and these farmers would consent to a less pervasive and more conservative Idaho. (Sadly I am just out side of GREATER IDAHO!).
Let the Portlanders rage, but they got trolled hard on this one

Kowani covered partisan segregation, and this is another example.

why dont they just move to Idaho? What does consent of the governed have to do with it? I don't think you understand the meaning of the phrase.

It doesn't mean if my candidates for statewide office lose or my side doesn't get a majority in the legislature you didn't give consent. That's not how the process works.

No one got trolled. This is a protest vote nothing more and is unlikely to go anywhere.

This is stupid.

Yes, give a state 2 exclaves that are hours away from the actual state they're in, that'll work well for utilities and local laws.

Their ultimate goal is to get the all the red counties in the state to vote to join Idaho.

Of course, this has to be about politics.

Only time will tell and I doubt these people are thinking about that.

Quick response,
1 yes they can move to Idaho but that place is like The Garden of Eden, so why spoil it?
2 Portland has not offended me, and I have no issue with the ruckus up there. However our Governor has raised taxes and regulations on logging, which is one of the big three exports of Oregon ( alongside grass seed and Titanium). That’s why many of the farmers are unsupportive of the Regime.
I get that it’s quite silly, but they would prefer to be in Idaho, and voted so.

Then move there. Voting to change boundaries is ridiculous.

Regime is a dumb phrase to use. The Governor and state legislature was voted in by the people of the state. Your not oppressed and stop acting like you are. To use such a phrase is an insult to those who fled dictatorial states.

Why would farmers be against taxes and regulations for lumber?

Seattle and Portland tend to piss off easterners in their respective states because they don’t seem to sincerely believe so many people could possibly want to live there that they should have the power they do in a democratic system to basically set the state’s agenda

From an outsider this seems a bit odd. Are the counties on the border between the two, or would you have weird pockets of different states within each other?
