Hey, thinking of joining. Am intrigued. I thought of doing either a Chinese Soviet Republic or an Authoritarian KMT ROC in Asia.

Given that Russia never went Soviet, I wondered if the would be revolutionaries fled to China so instead of Maoism, I thought of doing Trotskyism or Stalinist China with the five year plans

That could work. And is totally viable. China at the start due to being mentioned as Communist in prior accepted applications will start out as such. It can be flipped to nationalist over time if you want to go that route. But at the start it will be Communist. What kind, Maoism, Troskyism, Stalinist, etc, will be entirely up to you. So feel free to customize that however you wish.

Every nation will have them. They’re not permanent but represent starting issues that a player can address, ignore (with repercussions sooner or later), or exacerbate them to foment a possible long term goal. Like if a Chinese player wants to flip to nationalism they could deliberately RP in a manner to make things worse so a civil conflict breaks out to allow a counter-revolution against the CCP.

Generally I’ll be taking the listed domestic issues as the starting MEs.

I’ll just be using what’s listed in peoples apps as major domestic issues. Try to give a positive one as well so people have a unique good one for their nation. Like all the majors have one good one tied to the character of their nation.

In Manchukuo, Japan operates a secretive asymmetrical force of around 10,000 bandit mercenaries known as Chuchun sabotage units, divided up into companies of 200-300 men under Japanese commanders. History
The greatest years for the Empire was from the 1890s until 1945 with its "defeat" in World War Two. While a more favorable outcome than for other Axis powers, the Japanese economy and military was in tatters by the end of the conflict. As a result, Japan spend the next two decades in the process of rebuilding and recovering, turning its focus from the military towards its economy. While relations with the West never fully recovered, Japan soon resumed trade with the Americas and Europe following the end of the war.

The Korean and Vietnam Wars caused outrage in Japan, that the West was interfering in regional affairs as well as Western forces so close to Japanese shores. With a rising threat from Communist China, as well as with the world powers obtaining nuclear weapons and no security guarantee, Japan became desperate for deterrence. In 1975, Japan obtained the nuclear bomb and conducted a single low-yield test in the South Pacific. Under Emperor Hirohito, Japan's economy continued to expand and do well. However by the time of his death in 1989, the hope of reattaining the empire was never realized.

In the 1990s, the Japanese economy continued to thrive, but the military began to wane. Emperor Akihito, not as commanding as his father was, allowed for his influence to decrease and came to serve as mostly a ceremonial figure.

Jump to 2020, the Emperor Akihito abdicated the throne for his son, now Emperor Naruhito to take control. Influenced by then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the military hawks, the new reign under Naruhito saw Japan moving back into region politics. Now as 2021 emerges, the Japanese tiger, while weakened, is looking to reassert itself an attain past glory.

Major trade partners US, Russia, India, South East Asia, Korean Peninsula, Europe

Total military size 10.3 million
Breakdown of ground forces
Being the most populated country in the world, it's not that surprising that the CSR has the most active-duty and reserve-duty personnel in the world, with nearly 4 million serving in the Chinese Soviet Army. In addition, another 2 million serve in the paramilitary branch in the form of the Chinese Soviet Gendarmerie. However, the CSG is sworn to the UCSP specially the State Council, rather than the country itself. Although conscription is mandatory to all young males and females, the sheer influx of volunteers meant that enforcing conscription was never really needed. Yet all 18-year-olds have to register at their local conscription center.

The traditional army doctrine of the CSA revolves around the concept of "Army in being." A strategy in which China would use its vast manpower pools to force the enemy to overextend their forces, allowing the much larger Chinese army to strike the weakest point or attacking in a vast offensive to overrun the enemy.

6 million active/4 million reserve
Breakdown of naval naval forces
In order to combat the IJN and compete with the US, the Chinese Soviet Republic is currently building its own blue water fleet, laying down a foundation for four fleet carriers, a dozen heavy cruisers, and numerous screens and boats.

Breakdown of air forces
Soviet China has reasonable air capabilities but only on a local level. Most of its technology was either homemade or has origins in Germany, Russia, or the US. The fifth-generation stealth fighter is an example of the former.
100k active

Extra Armed Forces details
The Chinese Soviet Gendarmerie is specially used for crowd control, internal armed conflicts, prison security, or safeguarding highly important facilities. In wartime, they are usually assigned for local defense and rear area security. Due to being staffed and led by fanatical nationalists, the CSG has earned the unflattering nickname as the "Red SS."
Ongoing major and minor domestic Issues
The Two Centuries of Humiliation- The overall goal of the UCSP: to undo the humiliation of the Unequal Treaties and regain national prestige once again. China must become powerful, China will become powerful. So told for the last 200 years and now, the Chinese people wonder if China could ever become powerful as Hong Kong still remains in British hands.
Effect: Moderately low public confidence in the government's ability to unite China.

The Big Red- China is the most populated country in the world. While it comes with plenty of boons such as a more taxable population, it comes with high poverty, overpopulation in cities, and increase dependency on foreign imports.

Effect: Chinese population increase 4-6% per year.

The Red Dragon Rises- The Chinese Soviet Republic is the third-largest economy in the world thanks to Deng's reforms. By becoming the world's factory, China can exert its own level of soft power onto its neighbors like a planet with orbiting moons.

Effect: Greater political influence in international politics through economic pressure.

History
Before the Chinese Soviet Republic ever existed, the country that stood the highest chance to unite China was the Republic of China under the Kuomintang. At first, it was a centrist political umbrella movement encompassing both right and left-wing camps allowing it to make ties with the US, Germany, and Russia. Founded by Sun Yet-Sen and succeeded by Chiang Kai-Shek, the KMT sought to reunite China from the feuding warlords. Because the ROC was the largest contender for legitimacy and that the KMT had many socialist and communist elements, it became a hotspot for Russian Bolsheviks who were still unsatisfied by the Tsar’s reforms. One such Bolshevik was Leon Trotsky, a bookworm and experienced military man.

Because of the budding friendship with Trotsky and the patronage of left-leaning literature and art, Chiang Kai-Shek earned himself the nickname “Red Protector” despite being a traditionalist with no patience for communist dogma. While the Sino-German Agreement did produce German equipment and training to the fledgling NRA, it was Leon Trotsky who completely reinvented the KMT army into a truly fearsome force to be reckoned with.

Before the 2nd Sino-Japanese War broke out, the unexpected happened as Chiang Kai-Shek purged the right-wing elements of the KMT in the middle of a Northern Expedition to subjugate Ma Clique. No one could decisively pinpoint the exact reason as Chiang wasn’t a communist devotee himself. Indeed, Western scholars debated that the opposite was supposed to happen while Chinese scholars explained that it was Chiang’s close friendships with Mao and Trotsky against the distant relationship with the Right Wing KMT members that forced the purge to secure Chiang’s own power. Whatever the case, Red Terror descended the streets as communists and socialists targeted Chinese who had fascist sympathies. Estimated 30,000 Chinese were executed for their monarchist or fascist views.

The only person spared from the purge was Dai Lee, much to the horror of Mao Zedong. Mao incidentally warned Chiang that “Dai Li would use our colors to paint fascism red!” and pleaded with him to purge Dai Lee as well. However, Chiang refused as the “Chinese Himmler” proved himself invaluable to the KMT due to his extensive spy network throughout China, going as far as Korea and Taiwan. With the unexpected death of Kang Sheng, it was only a matter of time that Mao’s words be proven true.

By the time the 2nd Sino-Japanese War of 1937 came around, the ROC had already gained an international reputation as a “red” state pitted against an ultramilitarist nation of Japan. The Eight Years of Resistance, as taught in Chinese schools, was harsh, brutal, and grueling as tens of millions of Chinese soldiers and civilians died to the Samurai. But at the darkest hour did the KMT shine its brightest as the labor of Dai Lee, Mao Zedong, and Leon Trotsky borne fruit. Even when Japan had superior technology, it did not have the manpower to fully conquer China and so it engaged in an unwinnable war of attrition as the constant harassment of communist guerrillas made sure that Japan bled for every piece of land taken.

When the US and the Allied powers finally brought War to Japan, the ROC finally took the initiative and launched a massive offensive to liberate as much territory as possible. The NRA could have easily rolled up the Japanese army and reclaim Manchuria but Russia threatening intervention forced Chiang into a pre-antebellum status quo. A white peace to be exact yet the island of Hainan remained under Japanese control much to the frustration of the ROC.

Deeply saddened that China still remains a puppet to the Western Powers, Chiang fell into a deep depression over this failure to unify the country and in 1947, died in his family home. A brief power struggle erupted between Mao Zedong, Wang Jingwei, and Dai Li. Much to Mao’s fears, the influence of the Chinese Himmler ran deep in the KMT party and the government as a whole. Before Mao nor Wang could unite in opposition, Dai Li already unleashed his secret Redshirt Society to systematically take down Mao’s and Wang’s powerbase in what is to be known as the Great Purge. Over 700,000 KMT members would be quickly arrested and executed while the infamous “Trial of Twenty One” was broadcasted in China as Wang was forced to confess to false crimes of collaboration with Imperial Japan.

From there, Dai Li reorganized the Republic of China to the Chinese Soviet Republic, a new kind of dragon that would bring fire to the Asian continent. The Five-Year Plans of Dai Li would prove themselves successful in rapidly industrializing China albeit at a massive human cost of 20 million dying of starvation or disease. While his legacy would be the five-year plans that modernize China, Dai Li was secretly infiltrating Japanese occupied territories, funding independence movements in Korea, Manchuria, and Vietnam, and building up communist cells in Tibet, Mongolia, and Sinkiang.

When Dai Li died in 1978 at age 78, his successor Deng Xiaoping began a regime marked by three extremes: the first nuclear test in 1979, the liberalization of the economy in 1981, and the Tiananmen Square Coup. Deng quoted an old proverb to justify turning away from a command control economy “It doesn’t matter whether a cat is black or white. If it catches mice, it is a good cat.” Under Deng, state intervention was reduced, foreign investment returned, and new Special Economic Zones were created with free markets. Ironic that the cities chosen were once forced open to trade by the Europeans during the 19th century. This quite literally caused the Chinese economy to explode past Japan and landed firmly to be the 3rd largest economy in the world.

However, his biggest failure lay in Hong Kong and Macau. The two European nations were adamant that they kept the cities and refused to negotiate with Deng. With very few international sympathies at the time, the Chinese Soviet Republic was forced to back down and stew in anger. Dejected, Deng resumed his economic reform policies completely unaware of the storm he was concocting.

The Nanjing Coup, or the Battle of Nanking in Western Circles, can be summarized as a single clusterf*ck as it was a three-way stand-off between the government, communists, and democratic leaving students. Indeed, while Deng’s reforms were an outstanding boon for China as a whole, they alienated the orthodox Marxists in the military while simultaneously exposing the civilian population to liberal ideas such as republicanism. Long story short, the Government thought the Students were protesting against the Marxist army units marching into the capital while the Students thought the Marxist were marching with them while the Marxists thought a countercoup was already in place with the Students and the Government united against them. It was only when the Loyalist divisions arrived did the blood start flowing in Nanjing. 30,000 people died in the ensuing chaos that thankfully ended rather quickly.

But it did spark a crisis in the UCSP: Are they still communists?

Deng could not answer as he resigned that same year and was succeeded by Jiang Zemin, who mostly continued Deng’s economic reforms and pushed for Chinese unification. After the Nanjing Coup, Jiang would spend his foreign policy mostly building up relationships with the US, Germany, India, and Russia trying to clean up some of the negativity surrounding the CSR. His departure in 2002 will see Xi Jinping be placed in power. From then on, China started to embark on a more aggressive stance concerning Chinese unification over Mongolia, Manchuria, Sinkiang, Tibet, and the port cities of Hong Kong and Macau.

The Sykes-Picot agreement had led to create a Mandate in the Levant led by the French. This was the first itteration of the Lebanese State we know today. By the end of the second world war, Lebanon was declared a functioning state, and was given full independence from France in 1945. Life was stable, though a little unequal between Muslim and Christian, as the institutions of French society had burnt itself into Lebanese life. This inequality would lead to a Civil War in 1982, Christian and Muslim Civilians getting brutally slaughtered in the crossfires, at the end of it, Lebanon was in ruins financially, its people became nihilistic, and its government was in debt to Russia. The government ultimately ceded and gave Muslims their demands, however the damage has been done, and ever since the country has gone declined to today.

Cuba’s relations with Russia have been complicated. Like many other countries, Cuba condemned their illegal annexation of Crimea and don’t like their intervention in Ukraine. However, unlike other countries, they’ve taken little action; they’ve retained Russian diplomats and kept trade with Russia normal.

Effect: Cuba’s relations with Russia are rather cold good lukewarm

Enemies with the PRC
Fidel Castro had highly condemned the PRC’s actions at Tianmen Square, which caused Sino-Cuban relations and trade to crumble and cease to exist. Now, more than thirty years later and under a democratic regime, Cuba has still refused to take back the condemnation made by Castro, a condition the Chinese want met to re-establish diplomatic relations.

Effect: Diplomacy and trade with China is almost completely nonexistent

Hour of Redemption
With Castro long gone, the door to capitalism has been opened in Cuba for the first time in a long time. With the large influx of Western corporations and local Cuban businesses now doing business in Cuba, the economy has largely improved steadily since the collapse of the Castroist regime.

Effect: Cuba’s economy and GDP go brrrr have a steady growth of around 2% a year, allowing Cuba to make more money

Castro is gone(?)
While Castro is long gone, his legacy has not been forgotten nor forgiven by many foreign countries and even some Cubans at home, much to the dismay of the government.

Effect: Cuba’s reputation takes a -5% hit

History
In 1959, Fidel Castro and his militia overthrew the military dictatorship of Bautista, who fled to the Dominican Republic. After Castro is put into power, he and his government took a hard left stance economically, restricting private enterprise in most sectors and redistributing company-owned land back to the people who worked the fields, which contributed to deteriorating relations with the United States, Cuba’s northern neighbor. After the U.S placed a trade embargo on Cuba, they began to be pushed into Russia’s sphere of influence, with trade and diplomacy increasing with them. The Cuban Missile Crisis never happens, as 1)Russo-American relations were still relatively stable and 2) Russia lacked the nuclear arsenal to stow missiles in Cuba. Cuba also began to increase diplomacy and trade with the Maoist People’s Republic of China.

The period between 1963-1988 are basically the same as OTL. In 1989, however, the Tianmen Square Massacre occurred, and Fidel Castro condemned the People’s Republic of China in the strongest terms. China took much offense from this, and Cuban-Sino relations deteriorated; China levied harsh sanctions on Cuba, ejected Cuban ambassadors from their embassy in Beijing, and trade being completely cut off. This devastated the Cuban economy, as China was their largest trade partner. Prices of many ordinary goods skyrocketed, and many fell unemployed and below the poverty line. Castro’s response was rather poor, as he refused to liberalize the economy in an attempt to create jobs, actually further restricting the economy to combat “capitalist interference”, as he put it. The people were quite upset about this, noting how little Castro was doing to fix the economy.

At that his point, tensions within Cuba had come to a boil. All that was needed to spark a revolution was one more slip up from Castro, and that slip up came in 1994 when protesters peacefully demonstrated in Havana against Castro’s handling of the economic collapse. Castro ordered for the protesters to be dispersed at any cost. One thing led to another, and live ammunition was fired into the crowd, leaving 17 dead and 34 injured. This incident, which was called the Havana Massacre, enraged many Cubans, and was considered the last straw by many Cubans. The massacre also drew harsh criticism from abroad, with many issuing sanctions on Cuba. This, of course, did no favors for the already flailing Cuban economy, and as more fell into poverty, many had decided that they had had enough of the Castroist regime. Anti-Castro militias began to pop up, especially on the eastern end of the island. The militias began to clash with the Cuban army, with the first shots being fired near Santiago de Cuba. This would light the spark that would spread into a fire, and the Cuban Civil War, also known as the Third Cuban Revolution, began.

During the early parts of the war, the anti-Castro militia’s ambushed Cuban troops near Santiago, with an intention to capture the city. These skirmishes helped to soften defenses of the city, little by little, with other anti-Castro militias popping up all over the island. The United States, which had been very anti-Castro over the years, along with NATO, began to send supplies to the anti-Castro militias. When this was discovered by the Cuban government, they were outraged, and Castro authorized a declaration of war against the United States, which many historians today view as a suicidal move. American forces in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico began to skirmish with the Cuban navy, with the superior American Navy victorious. With the Cuban navy largely dealt with, the Americans began to make naval landings on the southern coasts of Cuba. Meanwhile, Santiago de Cuba had fallen to the Anti-Castro forces. After the capture of the city, continued with guerrilla warfare to capture many smaller towns on the east side of Cuba

With the fall of Santiago de Cuba, Castro began to be worried that his time as the undisputed leader of Cuba were numbered. Meanwhile, militias continued their guerrilla campaign in east Cuba and capturing many small towns, with some welcoming the militias. The Americans were also beginning to communicate with the militias about storming Havana and ending the war quickly. The militias liked this idea, but needed another major victory to further lower the morale of the Cuban army, which had many members end up deserting. That victory came at Camaguey, where the militias, along with support from American troops, attacked and successfully captured the city. After the battle, the Americans and the militias began to plan the attack on Havana.

Once that day came, Cuban militias and American troops went on American amphibious vehicles to navally invade. First, American air support made strikes near the city to weaken its defenses, making it more susceptible to attack. Then, the Americans and Cuban militias dropped paratroopers into the city, with them battling Cuban troops in the streets. Then, the American ships arrived in the harbor after blowing through Cuban naval defenses. The amphibious vehicles landed on the beaches, fighting with local police to get into the city. The rebels continued on, street by street, into Havana. Fidel Castro knew the city would eventually fall, and that he would be captured, so he committed a Hitler style pro-gamer move suicide in his home. The assault on the city continued until, eventually, the rebels and Americans made it into the capital building, arresting members of the National Assembly of People’s Power. Others made it to Castro’s home, where he was discovered dead. Fidel’s brother, Raul, was also discovered in the house, and was arrested. With Fidel dead, Raul was now the de facto leader, so the Americans offered surrender to Raul and the Castroist regime. Raul accepted, having no other choice. The Cuban Civil War was now over, after 7 bloody months. There were around 400 American casualties, 2,194 Cuba rebel casualties, and 4,284 Cuban army casualties. The total number of civilian casualties is unknown.

With the Castroist regime collapse, a provisional government was created: a seven member executive council, who controlled executive and legislative actions. The former members of the Castroist government were all tried for crimes against the Cuban people, of which 90% were found guilty, including Raul Castro, who was sentenced to death. People celebrated their newfound freedom, as the Cuban Republic was born anew.

In 1995, the new Cuban constitution was drafted, based on the American constitution, later known as the Constitution of 1998(named as such because it wouldn’t be ratified until 1998). Over the three years where the details were worked out, a bill of rights was made, giving Cubans the right to freely assemble(1st Amendment), the right of free speech(2nd Amendment), the freedom of religion(3rd Amendment), the right to a speedy trial with a jury of your peers(4th Amendment), the right to vote for all Cubans 16 and older(5th Amendment), the right to own property(6th Amendment), and the right to petition the government (7th Amendment). Other sections were added over time, and in 1998, it was ratified by the executive council, and by the people via the first democratic election in Cuba since before Bautista’s coup in 1952. With its ratification, three branches of government were formed; The National Congress, the Presidency, and the Grand Court of Cuba. Elections also began in 1998, where the first president of the Third Republic of Cuba, Victor Fuelenco Gutierrez, was elected, as well as the first members of the National Congress.

While Castro was gone, the Third Republic faced challenges early on. Civil war didn’t do any favors for Cuba’s already flailing economy, and at this point, it was in shambles. Unemployment was still a problem, and people looked to the new government for answers. As Fuelenco Gutierrez’s first order of business, he lifted all restrictions on free enterprise, and sold off 75% of state-owned properties, which put a considerable amount of money in the treasury. This extra money was used to get money or Cubans who needed it, paying off old debts, and improving infrastructure. He also made strides in foreign policy, convincing America to lift the embargo and sanctions and rebuild Cuban-American relations. With this, many American companies began to invest in the Cuban market, opening branches in Cuba. This, along with revived trade with the United States, did wonders for the economy, and by 2000, the GDP grew by 15% from the end of the war.

After 9/11 occurred, Cuba helped in the War on Terror, sending 6,000 troops to Afghanistan to aid with the war effort. In 2002, Victor would win re-election to the presidency, promising to build upon the economic growth that followed the civil war. He made good on his promises, continuing to grow the economy up until 2006, when he decided not to run for a third term. His Vice President, Diego Martinez Cawley, would run for president that year, and win the election.

Under the Martinez Cawley administration, the economic growth began to slow in a precursor to the 2008 recession, and when it came, Cuba was spared from the worst effects, but it still hit the economy rather hard. In an effort to reduce spending, Cuban troops in Afghanistan were withdrawn, financial aid to some countries was cut by 90%, and military funding was slightly reduced. Diego was able to get the economy relatively in the right direction by 2010, when he successfully won re-election

He continued to try and get the economy to recover from the recession , which yielded results, and the economy was back to pre-recession growth percentages by 2013. In 2014, Miguel, like his predecessor, decided not to run for a third term. In the 2014 election, Miguel Diaz-Canel, the first member of the Cuban Social Democratic Party to win the presidency, would win the election. While president, Miguel improved social welfare programs, expanded military funding, and continued to foster the growing economy, however adding more environmentally friendly regulations on businesses. While his policies were rather popular, he was rather corrupt, and also had ties to the Castroist regime. When this because public, his popularity plummeted, and he lost the 2018 election to Julio Chavez Fierra.

Julio worked to continue Cuba’s economic growth, give Cuba a bigger spotlight on the international stage, and help spread prosperity within Cuba’s own mini sphere of influence in the Caribbean and Latin America. In the present day, Cuba still faces a number of issues, but Cuba shall face them with upmost confidence to triumph.

The only thing mentioned for India is that it achieved independence like OTL. Korea is independent as well after 1945.

So far, I wonder if I made the Chinese Soviets too scary. It's a double edge sword that could get Japan to remilitarize.

Its certainly threatening. But Soviet China doesn't have vital resource regions like Manchuria, Outer Mongolia, and the areas west beyond the traditional territories of China. So its not as economically self-reliant as it is OTL, at least at the start of the RP. So a China-Japan rivalry could be a very precarious situation.

Japanese military commanders would probably not be too afraid of China since they will be sure that they can defend the homeland from invasion, but politicians will hype it up and will worry for Japanese territories around China. This will allow Japan to remilitarize.

Japan will already want to be assertive and if China contests the Senkakus then there may be some limited conflict.
