[SUBMITTED] More Skin Please

Postby Baggieland » Tue May 11, 2021 8:54 pm

My latest offering.

[TITLE] More Skin Please

[DESCRIPTION] A recent fire at a market in @@CAPITAL@@ led to a large number of burn victims. Those with the most serious injuries had to be air-lifted to Brancaland due to a lack of skin banks.

[VALIDITY] not great health spending

[OPTION] "We can't keep air-lifting all our victims to every corner of @@REGION@@," proclaims Dr. @@RANDOMNAME@@, Head of the Dermatology Unit at @@CAPITAL@@ General Hospital. "@@NAME@@ needs modern skin banks built in every major city, as well as info-campaigns to persuade @@DEMONYMPLURAL@@ to donate their skin after their death."

[EFFECT] coffins are lighter than they used to be

[OPTION] "I don't see many citizens lining up to donate their skin," sighs Dr. @@RANDOMNAME@@, as @@HE@@ picks off a bit of dried skin, then keeps it in a matchbox. "There are still many people who believe they should be buried 'whole', plus donated skin can only be stored for a maximum of five years. We need those skin banks, but there simply has to be compulsory skin donation upon death for everyone."

[EFFECT] open-cask coffins are a thing of the past

[OPTION] "Yuk!" exclaims supermodel @@RANDOMNAME@@, as @@HE@@ pats @@HIS@@ porcelain skin with affection. "What if you graft some wrinkly person's skin onto my body? No thanks! It seems to me that prevention is better than cure. Just stick a fire prevention leaflet through every home in @@NAME@@. That should do the trick, then we can all keep our own beautiful skin."

[EFFECT] a fire can be starved of oxygen by dropping a large pile of fire prevention leaflets onto it

Very interesting idea and well executed! One thing though:

No option to grow skin in vats, or the more ethically dubious option for using the skin of clones? I'd imagine nations with high tech, the vats policy or "allows cloning" would have the capability for that :)

I would agree with Daarwyth while also saying that such an option should be viable for nation with high technology levels.

On second thought... Maybe this should be excluded from classroom nations? Like, I don’t think that this is a theme that’ll be acceptable to be viewed by children...

What makes this different from other issues about organ donation?

I guess you could argue that skin isn't technically an organ, but in practice the positions people are likely to suggest are more or less the same.

Option 3 seems like a non-sequitur. Sure, it's always better to prevent injuries rather than fix them (getting injuried is pretty painful and will inconvenience you for a while even if doctors CAN perfectly fix you in the long run), but that's never going to have a 100% success rate (and again, we already have more focused issues on fire prevention). The point here is what to do when prevention has failed.

You don't need to increase the size of your text, or colour it if it isn't necessary. It's more disruptive than helpful :)

Organ donation would be the general subject issue, while this could easily be categorised as a niche on organ donation. We have multiple issues in the issue base that work in a similar manner: there's the general subject, and a niche.

That works when the niche invites specialized responses that are not applicable to the general case. None of the options here are new.

Thanks for your feedback. I contemplated your suggestion about including vat and clone nations into this issue, however, I believe that they don't really fit here. The whole issue evolves around the question of skin banks and skin donation. Vat and clone nations can just produce more skin, making the need for banks and donation a mute proposal.

While donation in general is not an adult topic, I do agree with you that this is a little more gory. Not sure if it should or shouldn't have the adult validity. We'll wait for an editor's opinion on that.

Do we have options from the other donation issues that propose lung banks or heart banks? I think not. I agree with Daarwyrth that this issue is niche enough. Also, skin donation / skin banks is something very few of us know about.

I'm definitely looking to improve option 3. I'll see what I can come up with.

A valid point! Although, it might be worth considering in that case whether not to exclude them in the validity. I could imagine a nation with vats for example or one that chose that one option to grow body parts and organs in vats to be like "Huh? How is this an issue, I can grow this in vats". Although I guess the "not too great health spending" also kinda fits that category, now that I think of it.

Included in validity now.

I've had a go at redoing option 3.

Second draft is up!

But your options don't concern the logistics of building or maintaining skin banks. They're just about where you'll be getting the skin that you put in the banks (voluntary donations, compulsory harvesting). The fact that you're aiming for long-term storage is completely ignored by the narrative.

Umm??? Since when has every minor detail been requisite in getting an issue published? If I write an issue about WMDs must I include where they'll be stored, how they'll be maintained, etc? All WMDs issues just say do you want them? If I write an issue about the need for more police, must I include where the training academy will be built or what facilities it will have? All extra police issues just say do you want more police? I don't recall any previous issues where the options have gone so deep.

A skin bank in every major city? That's fine for small and large populated countries, but until you get somewhere like Australia or Canada, it could hundreds of kilometres before you reach a major city. Even in China, there are major cities in the east whilst the west is almost desolate. I don't think that major cities is a good measure of where skin banks should be

Thanks Aussie, however, small towns in the aussie outback probably don't have the facilities to maintain such places. Outback burn victims could be airlifted to major cities - not as much a hassle as flying them overseas. Remember the validity is for nations with low health spending.

Anyway, I've gone ahead and submitted this.
