[r] ethnic slur in Olympics thread

Postby Dakini » Sun May 09, 2021 2:47 am

It's been a while so I forget the policy regarding slurs in general, but this poster has used one and has been doubling down on the use of it:

No. They aren't japs, that's like calling an American man who can speak Arabic and believe in Islam a Palestinian

Its not though? Jap is short for Japanese? Its not even offensive or derogatory against Japanese peoples?

'Jap' is actually considered an offensive term and has been since WW2. The phrase "Slap a Jap" was common in American propaganda and advertisements about buying war bonds. Most Japanese people today consider it an ethnic slur.

It's generally considered a slur, but not universally. While it's commonly known as a slur in the US, in other countries it's not always so well-known that it is. So, dependent on context, we generally wouldn't warn on first usage (unless clearly meant as a slur)...

...except this is a known returning troll, whose nation has been dealt with accordingly.
