French Mosque Set on Fire as Soldiers Threaten Coup

Postby Insaanistan » Wed May 05, 2021 6:54 am

A French mosque was hit in an arson attack Tuesday in Albertville, France. Surveillance cameras recorded a man pouring gasoline all around it before setting it on fire. This comes a week after a mosque in Rennes was defaced with graffiti reading “No Islamization!”, “Wake up, France!” and “We warned you, immigration kills!”, the last one most clearly in reference to the killing of a police woman by a Tunisian immigrant.

Emmanuel Macron’s poll numbers have dipped and it’s perceived part of his strategy is to appeal to the Islamophobia of the nation’s citizens, especially with the far right. Recently, a letter signed by 20 retired general, a hundred senior officers, and 1000 soldiers called Muslims and Muslim immigrants a “horde” rather than “legitimate citizens”, and warned that if the government didn’t take more actions against Islam, the military would launch a coup d’état.

France has seen a sharp rise in anti-Muslim sentiment and policies, such as a new separatism bill banning anyone under 18 from wearing the hijab, mothers who wear hijab from accompanying their children on school trips, and Algerian flags from being flown in official government buildings.

But the Muslims are the real terrorists allegedly. Not the guys burning mosques down or the potential right wing coup that's about to happen.

I wonder if the French people feel safer now, knowing that they could be living under a military dictatorship soon. Oh well, at least the immigrants are gonna suffer so losing your freedom and your democratic system of governance is gonna be so worth it to stop the Maghrebis from...taking away your freedom and your democratic system of governance

I've yet to realize that France, and some (goodness forbid) Western European countries aren't so "immigrant friendly" i mean, those guys from the middle east fled their own war torn homeland in order to find new life on European soil, only to be greeted with a barrage of unacceptance and discrimination?

Their lives are almost hopeless, and, being a Muslim myself, the actions that the man who burned said mosque
are appalling, indeed, and i saw that some other European countries' governments do accept Muslim people to settle on their lands, but their people aren't happy with their government's decision, like Norway's 2011 terrorist attack on an island (i can't remember that incident's name).

So, are the guys that burned down the mosque to blame, or is it the Muslims to blame?

A military coup is highly unlikely; it's misleading to suggest the bulk of the military is actively planning to depose the president. What is more worrying, however, is the possibility of an openly racist president being elected within a short timeframe; Le Pen is likely to exacerbate all of France's current ethno-religious strife significantly.

Yeah, I saw a Guardian article saying the same thing.
However, that doesn’t chance the fact 100 senior officers and 1000 current signed a letter threatening that.

These poor people. They should be able to practise any religion they want, without fear of being killed.

Oh wait, our former President banned muslims. I'm surprised this didn't happen in the states.

To be fair, Trump technically banned immigration from certain countries, most of which were predominately Muslim. In all reality it was a "Muslim ban" in the sense that his fans could say "yeah damn Syrians won't be moving to my town now and spreading the Muslim," but it banned basically anyone from those countries from coming here regardless of religion. At day's end Islamophobia is heavily racialized anyhow so nobody stops to think about the Syrian Christians because to them, an Arab is a Muslim is an Arab.

A far right coup? In FRANCE,!?! That's like the most left wing country in Europe! Suppose you can only go one way for so long before something makes you snap back in the opposite direction. I'm going to be really intrested to see what happens if those guys take power. I wonder if they will use the Vichy regime flag?

France actually has a strong right-wing. Le Pen only lost by a narrow margin.

Doubt a coup in france will ever happen and from what ive heard some of the soldiers who signed that letter are already facing a military court over it.

And most of which were also zones of unrest and conflict. The majority of the Muslim world was not, in fact, banned. In fact, the majority of the Muslim world isn't even Arab. You know what the largest (most populously Muslim) Muslim country in the world actually is? Indonesia. Notice how this country is not actually on the list.

Indonesians aren’t and weren’t exactly flocking to the US. Syrians were. Even when he banned non-Muslim majority countries, sometimes it would affect the Muslims mostly: Myanmar is Buddhist majority, but guess which religious group is trying to escape genocide there?

Do they now? I suppose that makes since, a exchange student from there told me that there right wing was small but largely composed of the wealthy, and that was before the charlie Hebdo attack. Figures that they would have grown in popularity among all classes after something like that.

And wasn’t it originally a list drawn up by the Obama Administration? Funny how there’s no blame for him in all this.

As for former President Trump, he’s going to get blamed by a segment of the population for everything from sun spots to hair loss until the heat death of the universe.

The armed forces chief of staff, Gen François Lecointre, said each soldier would go before a senior military council and could be “de-listed” or “put into immediate retirement”. Hervé Grandjean, the defence ministry spokesman, said on Thursday that by “openly criticising the government or appealing to comrades to take up arms on national territory”, the signatories had clearly broken military rules.
